My wife is going back to work off maternity leave on Monday, and today’s a Friday. She asked me to do a couple of things, which are to do the early morning wake-up since I’m up early anyway. I wake my son and do the early morning feeding with my son and also get home a little bit earlier to do homework with my daughter. She’s been home to do that stuff for the last couple of months, which was actually great, but we’re going to both be away.
My initial reaction to the early morning wake up wasn’t a positive. I love spending time with my son and I love doing the feedings, but it’s like my primary time to do work. I had this initial knee-jerk reaction, a very negative reaction to that, and I was like, what’s up with that? It’s kind of strange, kind of weird, but I knew where it was coming from because I finally got something in place where I really like my morning routine. Whenever I have a negative reaction to something off the back, it shouldn’t be negative. I love spending time with my son. It shouldn’t be a negative. I look for the opportunity in there. I’ve been getting up at 5 o’clock in the morning and spending the first hour of the day before I head off do to my walks to work taking a shower. I coudln’t take a shower at night. That’s not that big of a deal. I take a shower before I go to sleep and I can get some of that time back and spend more time with my son, and I can get up a half-hour earlier. So I did that this morning. She did the feeding this morning. I got up at 4:30 this morning as opposed to 5 o’clock this morning and I got so much stuff done in that extra hour and a half, which was just extra get ready, take care of myself time. Now I’m taking an extra half hour by taking a shower at night, which takes 10, 15 minutes. Now I’ve got an extra half-hour in the morning, get to spend some time with my son, and get some more work done in the morning before heading out. It only costs an hour’s sleep and plus, getting up that early drives me to actually want to go to bed earlier at night.
I go to bed at the same time as my daughter. I was thinking about it because I’m a person who doesn’t like to waste too much time sleeping, but I’m a person who likes to get the rest that goer along with it. I was like, if I’m getting up at 4:30 in the morning, I can go to bed at 10 o’clock and still have a pretty full day. I don’t know what psychologically triggered it because I wasn’t excited about that. I realized those things that should be good things that start off where our kneejerk reactions are negative, those are really the things we want to delve into and explore opportunities around.
