Pushing Past

I was working on a new strategy yesterday for writing videos and I got to a place where I just wasn’t feeling like I was making enough progress and running out of time. In the past what I would have done is I would have stopped and moved onto something else and realized, hey, this is not the thing that I should be doing right now and I did something else that allowed me to get immediate satisfaction. I think that’s the thing that stops the success, where we need to get that immediate satisfaction, we need to get that immediate high.
When I realized at the end of the working session because I was running out of time, I might not get exactly where I want to get to, I might not produce the exact results I actually want to produce, but everything I do in moving in the right direction is progress. If I take that progress and I’m further along now than I was when I started the project and pick it up again, and I make progress again and keep on moving the ball forward, then eventually I’m going to get to a place where I get to the “goal posts.” What I learned from this session is we don’t know what we don’t know. We’re moving forward in a direction and if we have expectations on how far we’re going to get in each session or each day or each week, and will consider failure if we don’t meet those expectations, we’re pretty much setting ourselves up for definite failure. If the goal is progress and just moving forward and knowing that we’re going to pick it again because that’s the key; when we make some progress we move forward, we know we’re going to pick it up again, that’s when magic can start happening over a period of time.
