PERFORMANCE HOUSE
Charleston Cultural Center
BRIEF:
Experience the city of Charleston and translate the character defining details of the city into an architectural concept. Develop a public performance center depicting these observations and show how the focal elements define the atmosphere.

DEFORMATION
Lush organic life defines and deforms Charleston as it twists through the built environment, splitting through the mortar of colonial development with the inevitable dominance of the natural earth. Weathered moss-covered stones, broken edges and uneven bricks roll imperfectly along the ground, all revealing an identity specific to the city.
The structure of the performance center is inspired by the dominating influence of organic life that permeates through Charleston. The roots of trees and vines writhe through tilted gravestones and cobblestone roads creating curvilinear structures out of once rectilinear forms. The plans for the structure and flow of spaces within take cues from the mutated spaces and forms, underscoring the push and pull of organizing elements. +

MYCOLOGY RESEARCH FACILITY
Laboratory + Residence + Exhibition Space
BRIEF:
Through the development of two disparate characters, create a narrative in which they meet. Use the details of their lives and interaction to extract a concept and a process for an architectural program.
DESCRIPTION:
The Mycology Research Facility represents a unique hub of scientific inquiry and exploration, where researchers converge to delve into the mysteries of the fungal kingdom. The laboratories, exhibition galleries, and living spaces lend to the advancement in the study of fungi; providing a space for experimentation and display, showcasing the potential for the benefit of humanity and the environment.

ELUCIDATION
This project’s origin parallels with the exponential qualities innate to the mycelial networks of fungi. Conceptual primitives were developed through a series of methodically folded planes documented through section drawings. The cubic masses represent a programmatic paradigm. The folded planar models were introduced to these cubic masses and allowed to dissect and subtract spatial voids amongst them in a rhythmic promenade from public exhibition to laboratory function.

RED HOOK LIBRARY
An educational space in Brooklyn
BRIEF:
Poche holds an important place in architectural design. It is a dialogue between object and void, and reveals spatial sequences and form.
Using investigations of contemporary and historical poche, develop a formal language to generate a concept for a public library in Red Hook.
ELUCIDATION:
By incorporating geometric mutation the sequence is generated through rotation, translation, and scaling to produce a dynamic spatial composition.

RED HOOK MIDDLE
Poche holds an important place in architectural design, not only in conveying the balance between positive and negative space, but poche actually contributes to the visual weight of a structure as well.
Using investigations of contemporary and historical poche, a formal language was developed to generate a spatial concept for a middle school in Red Hook.
The resulting form lends itself to a structural steel system. Various cantilevers and morphing geometries are rationalized through a series of wide flange brackets that work as a skeleton to which the aluminum facade is welded to. The cross sectional brackets follow a rhythmic segmentation of the overall structure and connect larger floor girders together, transferring the loads to columns that follow a grid created by this flow.
Concrete + metal decking spans between the bracketed system, and vertical mullions tie the wall systems together. The roof is a lightweight metal deck with skylights at classrooms and circulation spaces.
