Yap 1 Justin Yap English 91x Mr. King 10/27/07 Who is more qualified for the Administrative Assistant? I am looking for a person who is willing to work for my new internet startup company. I currently have a position opening for an Administrative Assistant. This person needs to be a full time employee and is able to run my office. This person must be independent , hard working, and reliable. I have two applicants who really stand out of all the other applicants who are named Thomas and Margaret. Both of the candidates are equally qualified with the technical skills that are required for this job. Thomas has worked for a company called Fitch, Wilson Co. and attended to Farrell University. Margaret in the other hand, has worked for Metro Corp. and Jos. Farnsworth & Co. I believe Thomas should be working for the Administrative Assistant as he has 2 years of work experience and has a University background. Thomas‘ first best qualification is his work experience as he has been working with Fitch, Wilson Co. for two years. He has worked with Fitch, Wilson Company for as long as two years and has withheld a position that is a combination of a secretary and a assistant. As an employer, they know that the person who has more work experience has a better chance of succeeding for the job and will have better quality of work. He also has a university of background which increases the work quality as most university graduates tends to work harder (depending from what college) than state or community colleges. As
Yap 2 for Margaret, she only had a secretarial experience. She doesn’t have any experience as a assistant compared to Thomas. She worked for 18 months as a secretary in the Metro Company and the company had to let her go as they said “We had to let her go” (77). They did not say exactly why they had to let her go but by saying they were overstaffed. So you can infer that she wasn’t a good worker to have not including personality in a company. The company would be better off of having someone who has a good work quality. Thomas’ second best qualification for the Administrative Assistant is the organization quality of his work for he has shown good organizational skills through his past work experience and schooling. As I look on Thomas’ third letter coming from Professor Roosevelt Whitson at Farrell University, it is said that “he was always prepared and participated rather modestly in class discussions; his papers were well written and carefully researched” (76). That has definitely impressed me, especially coming from a University professor, that he is very well organized. You cannot have well written papers that is carefully researched without any organizational skills. Organizational skills are very important to me when it comes to hiring as when I ask for something right away, I expect it coming to me fast or within a certain time limit. It is also said that he has given an “…oral presentation on our problems with North Korea and did a thorough job, missing nothing important…” (76) As for Margaret, she has trouble on finishing a project. I can infer that if she can’t finish her project on time, then she is not a good organized person as if she was, she would have managed her time wisely and has gotten her work completed. It is said on the telephone call from Ms. Tang that she was “having
Yap 3 trouble getting her to finish a project, and then after she completed it, I found out that someone else had done it for her.” If someone was to assign me a project and I asked one of my coworkers to do it for me, my boss would not be happy with me as I gave the work to someone else. The boss has a specific reason on who to assign the project to. If I am in need of assigning a project to her and finding out that is someone else’s work, I would not be very please as it is called plagiarism. As plagiarism is illegal, I do not accept plagiarized work from other people. Thomas‘ third best qualification for this opening job is his commitment towards his work. Thomas always turns his work in and on time without complaining about his workload. This shows that Thomas is more focused on his work and will do anything to turn his work on time. His coworkers and his supervisors were always “…more than satisfied…” (76). which gives you a good perspective of Thomas. He also never complains about his workload or deadlines that were assigned to him. A company needs that type of a person as things are constantly coming toward him and he has a certain amount of time to get it finished. Thomas happens to be that type of a person who can get it done on time with a good work quality. There aren’t much people who are like that in which is natural for them Thomas happens to be the one. However, Margaret is the type of person who will put things off when it comes to work that is not within her routine. If she was a well committed person, she would not put things off. A company does not need a person who tends to put things off and have other people do it for her as they constantly give Margaret work. There will always be things out of routine for everybody and those things may be important or may not, but it is always best to get it done on time and by
Yap 4 having it as a good quality. Since the company had to let her go, I can infer that she is a person who is not completely committed to her work. Thomas’ least qualified capability is his ability to work under pressure. Even though it may seem like the ability to work under pressure should be in a higher position of the most qualified job experience, it is the last one out of the four as I believe the work experience, organizational skills, & commitment is more important than the ability to work under pressure. As Jonathan Chu from Fitch, Wilson company stated “…and he always managed to get everything done on time” (76). It clearly states that he can be the person who can get the last minute job done on time. Having someone to do work under great pressure is thumbs up for any job as some jobs are always in constant pressure in some way. As for Margaret in the other hand, she is not reliable to work under pressure as she needs supervision. James Hodges states that “…though she does not seem to work well as some others when under great pressure” (77). Having an employee who doesn’t seem to work well under great pressure is not a very good trait to have. In order to succeed in almost any job, you need to work well under pressure as things are constantly thrown at you. To conclude this, Thomas should be hired for the Administrative Assistant as he has very good traits than the other candidate, Margaret. He is more qualified as he works under great pressure, has the work experience as a assistant & secretary, organized, and committed to his work. Overall, I believe he will be the person who best suit’s the position as an Administrative Assistant. He fit’s the whole criteria of what we are looking for.
