July 2015
Chamber Welcomes New Local Business Leadership The Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor & Convention Bureau Board of Directors recently confirmed the election of three local business leaders to serve as members of the Board. Era Polly of Era Polly Real Estate, Janet Silveria, Chief Executive Officer of Community Bank of Santa Maria, and Chris Slaughter, Executive Director of the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum will serve as voting members of the board effective July 1. Era Polly is a California Central Coast native and has been in the Real Glenn Morris Estate Industry in the Santa Maria Valley Chamber Chief for approximately 25 years and as an Executive Officer independent Real Estate Broker for 17 of those 25 years. Voted Orcutt’s Most Favorite REALTOR and selected REALTOR of the year, Era is no stranger to hard work, dedication and commitment and has served the Real Estate industry well in various different leadership capacities including President of the Santa Maria Association of REALTORS, President of the Women’s Council of REALTORS and is current Regional Chair for the California Association of REALTORS and current Board Member for the Santa Maria Association of REALTORS Board of Directors. A long time supporter of the Santa Maria Special Olympics and the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, Era loves her community, the people of Santa Maria and would be honored to serve as an active and enthusiastic Board Member. Janet Silveria is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Community Bank of Santa Maria, and also serves on the bank’s Board of Directors. Although she has realized most of her success in banking through experiential learning, she earned her graduate degree in banking from Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington, Seattle. Janet has called Santa Maria home since 1983. She is a current member and
past Distinguished President of Kiwanis Club of Santa Maria-Noontime and currently serves as Treasurer of Santa Maria Kiwanis for Kids, Inc. She is on the board at VTC Enterprises and is a CASA volunteer. Janet is honored to have this opportunity to serve the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. Chris Slaughter is the Executive Director of the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum and past Director of the Santa Maria Valley Wine County Association. She was also Public Relations Director for CafeFX in Santa Maria. Chris is currently a Trustee of the Santa Barbara Foundation and has been involved in numerous nonprofits over the last 20 years including the Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation, where she was a founding board member and fiveyear president, and the Discovery Museum, where she was a long-time board member. A graduate of UCLA, Chris first worked in television production for Entertainment Tonight and Personalities and has been a marketing and public relations consultant for a wide variety of businesses in Los Angeles, Chicago and Santa Maria. Chris and her husband, Dr. Joe Slaughter, came to Santa Maria 19 years ago to open an oral surgery practice. They feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to plant their roots in this community and raise their two daughters here. The Chamber’s Board serves as our connection to the broader business community. It’s important that we have individuals serving on the board who can help ensure we’re meeting our mission of creating an environment in which business can thrive in our community. We are fortunate to have a very engaged group of local business leaders guiding our organization and these new additions to our board will further strengthen that leadership. Members of the Chamber Board serve as volunteers and provide policy guidance, fiscal oversight, and general leadership to the Chamber of Commerce staff. The Chamber Board currently has 21 voting members.

The VCB is responsible for producing visitor brochures and guides as needed for the marketing and promotion of the Santa Maria Valley, which highlight all Chamber members who are involved in the tourism industry. This includes hotels, attractions, restaurants and event facilities. The VCB introduced new versions of its winetasting and barbecue guides, reformatted from booklets to brochures, earlier this year. We are delighted to report that the quantity didn’t last very long, as we moved through 10,000 brochures within less than six months’ time. Therefore, we updated the information for both and are proud to unveil our new expanded Santa Maria Valley Wine and Beer Tasting Guide and updated Santa Maria style Barbecue brochure! These pieces are available to visitors who come

#SantaMaria Fave 5s In our quest to promote what there is to see and do in the Santa Maria Valley (and beyond), the VCB has changed its Frontline Staff Calendar format and releases a weekly calendar update of #SantaMaria Fave 5s, which includes 5 special events that are held over Friday, Saturday and Sunday in and around Santa Maria. Each listing includes 5 lines of text and a direct link - and is meant as a resource for the frontline staff and sales departments at local businesses to share with guests and visitors to our area. Our goal is to provide a quick reference to encourage visits to our local attractions, restaurants and event facilities, growing event attendance, and keeping the tourism industry in-the-know about what’s happening. These events are pulled from SantaMaria.com – if you host events and haven’t been posting your events on our calendar, please do! If you need information on how, email Gina@santamaria.com.

Our Modern World Needs Jurassic Resources Oil and gas production has been a part of Santa Barbara County for over a century. During that time, the petroleum industry has contributed to amazing advances in technology and industry. It has improved our quality of life on a grand scale. These companies are Dave Cross in business because Director, we need them. Our Economic Development modern world still needs Jurassic resources. The methods used to extract oil have also been improved by technology, but the industry is not perfect. The recent Plains All American Pipeline oil spill shows that there are infrastructure concerns and operational issues that need to be addressed. The media flooded the airways with a tsunami of information regarding the spill, having us believe that the accident was epic in scope and size. But is the sensationalism necessary, and is the spill a reason to vilify the oil industry in Santa Barbara County? Let’s add perspective and see what 100,000 gallons of spilled oil looks like by using some different visual comparisons. Try to picture how far up the Empire State Building the oil would go, based upon the amount of oil that spilled. You might be surprised to learn that it would not even reach the 6 inch level of the 1,250 ft. building. If you gathered up all the barrels of oil from the spill and lined them up inside of a football field, how many fields would they take up? Well, they wouldn’t even reach the 20 yard line on the first field. Imagine a river of oil 3 feet deep and 20 feet wide created by the spill. How far would it travel? It would stop after only going 200 feet, or a third of a city block. Let’s use a local example. How many backyard swimming pools could be filled by the amount of oil that was spilled? Fortunately, the answer is only about 5 or 6 at the most. The Plains All American Pipeline oil spill was 100,000 gallons, or 2,381 barrels. That’s only 2.7% of what is released naturally for one year in the Santa Barbara Channel. Every year, approximately 86,000 barrels of oil are naturally seeping into the ocean along the Santa Barbara coast, according to research. The natural seepage of oil and gas in the Santa Barbara channel has been occurring 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for hundreds of thousands of years. Consequently, the environment off of Santa Barbara has been breaking down the effect of oil since long before the Chumash, or anyone, inhabited the coast.
As a result of the Plains All American Pipeline spill, the aggressive political backlash to end oil production has already started. But, that is not the view of the majority of people who live in Santa Barbara County. Last November, Measure P, which was an attempt to shut down the oil industry, was soundly defeated at the polls. Using this accident as a reason to do it anyway would circumvent the will of the people. Most people hear only one side of the story. When they are given all the facts, they understand the benefits and necessity of oil and gas production. Oil helped build Santa Barbara County. Oil provides jobs, supports businesses, and helps non-profits. Oil contributes to public safety. Oil helps fund our schools. In fact, without the taxes levied on oil, the County Supervisors would have had a difficult time balancing the county budget. According to a study of the onshore oil industry by the UCSB Economic Forecast and commissioned by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce, every barrel of oil produced generates $142 in local economic impact. On a broader scale, nearly 90% of the parts that make up our cars require petroleum somewhere in the process. Plastic is manufactured with petroleum. Thousands of other beneficial products like medical devices, household items, and manufactured goods are made possible because of oil. Even the staunchest environmentalists rely on oil, whether they know it or not. Smart phones would not be possible without components derived from petroleum. In fact, being “connected” relies on oil for both energy and products. While great minds are working on energy alternatives, we aren’t anywhere near to making these alternatives viable on the scale that we need them to be. We are going to be using oil for a long time. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t conserve energy. We should and we have to. Our Energy Watch Partnership embraces and promotes energy efficiency and sustainability. It makes complete business and personal sense, whether you are doing it to save money, or because you feel it is the right thing to do. For oil companies in Santa Barbara County, it has become a matter of survival. They continue to be pushed ever closer toward extinction. It’s time they embraced their Jurassic mojo. Oil companies need to assert themselves and get their story out. They should proclaim with a loud, emphatic roar that they are here to stay in Santa Barbara County.

In the recent Santa Maria Business Confidence Survey, half of all business responders have performed some sort of energy efficiency upgrades. That is good news! The bad news is that half are lagging behind! I urge all businesses interested in an energy audit and energy efficiency to contact the Chamber of Commerce. On average, businesses that participate in the program save about $1,600 per year on their energy bills. It is easy to do. All you have to do is call the Chamber and ask for your business to be included. Talk to Dave Cross at edc@santamaria.com or call (805) 925-2403 ext 817.
Santa Barbara County Fire fighters and Sheriff’s Department brief those who attended the New Cuyama Outreach Event earlier this year. This contest is open to any person, business, agency or organization to create a design that can be placed on any product from the Santa Maria region. The contest ends July 31!
