What’s On Autumn/Winter 2021
Dear Friends, Can I let you in on a little secret? I’ve missed you. Your smiling face and warm “Hello!” as you walk through the door. The sound of your applause as you enjoy another fantastic show. Your patient queueing as you wait to get your book signed by that brilliant author. Your laughter ringing through our corridors. The way you’d do your homework (that you forgot from last week) over a coffee in the café before your language class. Your “Thanks everyone. See you next week” as you chat to the Box Office team on your way out. It’s just not been the same without you. So when I say we are all absolutely thrilled to be presenting you with our latest What’s On guide for our Autumn/Winter 2021 season, I cannot overemphasise how much I mean that. And what a season our fantastic Programming Team have curated just for you. Packed full of fascinating talks and classes, music to lift your spirits and move your soul, awardwinning authors and comedians, inspiring live performances, fantastic films, best-in-class language courses, innovative Jewish festival celebrations, the UK’s leading Krav Maga school, incredible Families & Youth activities
to suit all ages, lots of opportunities to get involved with Social Action projects and volunteering, and even dedicated events for specific groups, including the 20s & 30s, the LGBTQ+ community, Russian-speaking Jews and so much more. If anyone would have said to me back in September 2019 that we were starting our last full season of live, in-person programming at JW3 for two years, I would have sent them for an Olympic-style drugs test. I could never have imagined that halfway through the next programming season we would be shutting our building to the public for 18 months, moving all events online and engaging thousands of people every week with the best of Jewish culture and learning directly into their homes through their computer screens. Let alone creating a food bank that has since delivered over 180,000 meals worth of food to families across Camden and turning our building into a rapid Covid-testing site, a pop-up vaccine clinic and a regular NHS Blood donation centre. And yet, here we are, two years later, the living embodiment of the Yiddish phrase, “Man plans, and God laughs”. It’s been a tough 18 months for everyone, so we’ve put extra care and love into creating this new season of programmes just for you. So please, pour yourself a drink, cut yourself a large slice of honeycake, have a flick through these pages, and pick out a few events that you know will lift your spirits, stimulate your mind, or just make you smile. You’ll notice that many of our programmes will be available to enjoy live online if you are not able to come back to our gorgeous venue in person, so you can engage with our programme in more ways than ever. However you are able to join us, we can’t wait to have you with us again.
Raymond Simonson CEO, JW3
DO WE HAVE A
FRI3ND
IN YOU?
Did you know that in addition to moving many of our classes and events online, we’ve launched our on-demand service JW3-TV and one-stop shop for communal events JewishOnline? We’ve also set up a food bank, distributing over 180,000 meals to local residents in need; supported NHS blood drives and operated a phone service to engage with lonely members of the community. Although we’ve achieved a great deal, we can’t continue to do this amazing work without Friends like you. That’s why we’ve recently launched our new membership scheme, JW3 Friends. As a thank you for your Friendship, you’ll get 10% off most of our events, special discounts from partners, and advanced booking where possible. Because after all, that’s what Friends are for.

Girls In Trouble with Alicia Jo Rabins Be transported by Alicia Jo Rabins’ beautiful song cycle about the inner lives of Biblical women - and how their complicated experiences resonate with our own. Drawing inspiration from rabbinic midrash, bluegrass, feminist Torah commentary, indie rock and mysticism, Rabins’ classical violin training and background as a poet combine with her years of Jewish text study to offer an intimate window into the surprisingly relevant lives of these ancient women.

Nature & Nurture
with Paula Kitching
with Angela Gluck
Hear Paula brilliantly dissect the news of the week and join the conversation. Topics are generated by you and the issues of the week.
‘Nature and nurture’ may conjure up an old mental picture but the power of this image continues to resonate beyond the tension between genetic inheritance and patterns of human development. This autumn Angela will look at ‘nature’ itself— our environment—and how Jewish tradition views it.

The last year has been the most challenging of JW3’s existence. Despite everything we held true to our charitable mission: ■ We engaged thousands of people every week in high quality online programmes. ■ We welcomed hundreds of children into our Centre for safe, fun, educational and recreational school holiday camps. ■ We hosted vaccination clinics, a Covid test centre and regular NHS Blood Donation days. ■ We set up a Food Bank that has so far delivered over 180,000 meals worth of food to families in need.
