Autumn/Winter 2022

What’s On

Dear Friends, I can’t tell you quite how much I’ve enjoyed seeing so many of you this year so far. Whether it’s been for classes and courses, to start learning Hebrew, for one of our many arts and culture events, to visit our cinema or to bring your kids along to one of our family events, being able to see you back in our wonderful building and bringing it to life after so long is too wonderful to put into words. And so, in true JW3 style, we’re not slowing down. In fact, when this lands on your doorsteps, we’ll have the Hampstead Beach @ JW3 up and running for a taste of Tel Aviv in North West London, and our summer programme of children’s holiday camps, Hebrew Ulpan and more will be in full swing. And of course, we’ve got plenty of fabulous events to take you through to the end of the year.

We’re bringing laughter back with some favourites – long-time JW3 friend Ashley Blaker returns with the latest in his sell-out in-conversation series, this time with David Schneider (p3). Sol Bernstein (p4) returns to our stage to bring back some of that old cabaret Catskills magic, and we’ve got our very own Chutzpah! (p10) night to invite you to take to the stage as well. Our music programme is bursting with life. We’ll be paying tribute to the late great Steven Sondheim (p8) on his yarzheit (the anniversary of his passing), and welcoming back the multi-talented Erran Baron Cohen to perform his seminal album Songs in the Key of Hanukkah (p9) live (if you made it to last year’s show, you’ll know quite how magical this is).

Theatre makes a welcome return (p11-14) with a variety of new and emerging works from Jewish artists exploring aspects of their history and heritage in a variety of mediums. I encourage you to come and support them and discover your new favourite talent. Our Young JW3 (p19-24) programme is brimming with brilliant events for those in their 20s and 30s, from our famous Friday Night Dinners to parties, quiz nights and a wonderful Chanukah party. As always, our Adult Education programme has some of the best educators out there, with a huge array of classes on History and World Affairs (p27), including a history of Jews all over the world from Bournemouth to Cape Town (p37-38), and the most sought-after language classes (p49-50) around.

Our boutique cinema (p17) also welcomes back the UK Jewish Film Festival (p18) this winter, with a strong line-up of Jewish and Israeli films to keep you entertained. Whether you’re flicking through this brochure for Chanukah parties, live performances, intellectual stimulation, volunteering opportunities, or just for something that puts a smile on your face, I am sure you will find what you need this season. And I can’t wait to see you here soon.

Ballad of Mauthausen with Niki Jacobs JW3 presents international Yiddish folk singer Niki Jacobs’ beautiful and haunting version of The Ballad of Mauthausen, originally a collaboration between poet Lakovos Kambanellis, a survivor of Kamp Mauthausen and composer Mikis Theodorakis, banned for activism against social injustice. An Evening to Mark the Departure and Expulsion of Jews from the Arab Countries and Iran: The Last Jews of Iraq November 30 is the official memorial in Israel to mark the departure and expulsion of more than 850,000 Jews from Arab countries and Iran in the 20th century. JW3 is hosting the official commemoration in partnership with Harif, the UK Association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa, and Sephardi Voices UK. This year our theme will be The Last Jews of Iraq. By 1970, just 3,000 Jews remained in Iraq from a community of 150,000; today there are only three. We will hear testimonies from those who became hostages to a regime of terror under Saddam Hussein and witnessed the Baghdad hangings of nine innocent Jews in January 1969. But we will also hear stories of hope and adventure: how 2,000 Jews escaped from Iraq in a daring smuggling operation - until it became possible to leave the country legally in 1972. The Gordon Riots with Jill Stern The Gordon Riots of 1780 were the most devastating outbreak of urban violence in British history. For almost a week, large parts of central London were ablaze, prisons were destroyed and the Bank of England attacked. Hundreds of rioters were shot dead by troops and for many observers it seemed that England was on the verge of a revolution. The instigator of the riots was one Lord George Gordon who subsequently converted to Judaism. Come along and find out about this intriguing episode in our history.

Gavin Morris, the director of the South African Jewish Museum, will give a brief history of Jewish life in Cape Town and provide some insight into contemporary Jewish life in South Africa. Jews have made Cape Town their home and left an indelible mark on the city in doing so. Despite their relatively small number, they have played an important and disproportionate role in shaping the city and region, whether it be in business, the arts, academia, medicine, law, politics and sport. Truus’ Children: A Forgotten War Hero with Margaret Jacobi, Richard Jacobi, Pamela Sturhoofd and Jessica van Tijn The award-winning film Truus’ Children tells the story of the little-known Dutch resistance heroine Truus Wijsmuller, who saved at least 10,000 children. Pamela Sturhoofd and Jessica van Tijn dedicated over three years to research the complete story of this Dutch Oskar Schindler, a woman so dedicated, stubborn and convinced of her mission that she went to Vienna in December of 1938 to negotiate a deal with Adolf Eichmann to let around 10,000 mostly Jewish children flee to England, some staying behind in Holland too. The film will be followed by questions and answers with the film’s directors and an opportunity to hear about the Truus Wijsmuller archives. Wednesday 14 September 7pm - 9pm £10 per person

Hannah Arendt and the Controversy of ‘Eichmann in Jerusalem’

Photo Credit: Münchner Stadtmuseum, Sammlung Fotografie

with Dr Daniel M. Herskowitz

43 43

In the early 1960s, Hannah Arendt was sent to Israel by The New Yorker to report on the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the German Nazi SS leader, who was accused of crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Her report, Eichmann in Jerusalem, immediately became one of the most controversial texts of the twentieth century. Both condemned for ‘victim blaming’ and praised for breaking new ground in our understanding of the Holocaust, this work continues to provoke intense emotional and intellectual reactions till this day. This lecture is dedicated to Arendt’s criticism of the trial, her understanding of the Holocaust, totalitarianism, and ‘the banality of evil’, and tries to understand why this book remains so controversial almost six decades after its publication. In partnership with the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. Monday 19 September 7.30pm - 8.30pm In the Building: Online: £15 per person

Get The Children Out: Unsung Heroes of the Kindertransport with Mike Levy How did the Kindertransport happen? Who organised the rescue of more than 10,000 Jewish children from Germany and Austria? Who cared for the unaccompanied children once they got to Britain? What lessons might there be for today’s refugee crisis? The answer is an army of forgotten names: the fearless Dutch lady, the generous grocer, the tireless Quaker, the Berlin chaperone and the maverick rabbi, among many others. Assisted by actors portraying some of the forgotten heroes, Mike Levy uncovers the gripping stories that lie behind the unprecedented act of mass rescue in 1938-39. The evening will conclude with a panel discussion looking back at the Kindertransport to how we deal with refugees today. FRI3ND

IN YOU?

Want to be the first to know about all our new events and special offers? Never want to miss an Alan Howard Speaker Series event or a JW3 In Conversation With evening? It might just be time for you to become a JW3 Friend.

In addition to our undying love (and helping us to make a greater impact with our programme), as a thank you for your Friendship, you’ll get 10% off most of our events, special discounts from partners, and advanced booking where possible. Because after all, that’s what Friends are for.
