Shooting Bokehs With Your Lomo LC-A+

Christmas is a good opportunity to take some bokehs, since there are plenty of lights to take pictures of. Here is a simple way to generate gorgeous light bokehs, using your Lomo LC-A+.

It’s that time of that time of the year again when our houses and streets are adorned with colourful Christmas lights to add cheer to the season! One of the things that you probably want to try, or do again, is to capture beautiful bokeh shots of decorative lights. However, if you are using your Lomo LC-A+ you are likely to get out of focused light shots such as the one above? Not pretty enough, right? So how do we achieve bokehs like those that come out of SLRs with 1.8 prime lens, when what we only have is our trusty LC-A+, or other compact cameras? All you need to do is to buy or find a cheap magnifying glass. Set your focusing at 0.8 meter, place the magnifying glass right in front of your LC-A+, point towards the lights, at about 0.5 to 2 meters, and shoot. If all goes well, you should be able to get gorgeous light bokehs! Go ahead and try it!

Double Your Pleasure:

Multiple Exposures with Color and Shadow

A lot of people like multiples but are never satisfied with the output enough to shoot them more consistently. I want to talk about how double exposures work and what you can look for.

I could give you a load of reasons why I love multiple exposures: - It’s not that organized. -It’s like a gambling addiction. It’s like X-mas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa. It’s like a blind date. - You know what your heart is asking for. You know what your eye wants to see. You know what you want those spinning fruits should look - like after you pull the metal arm using your last quarter. - You don’t know till you see it from the film lab. There is a surprise in - Multiple Exposures that no other photography gives you. More importantly: I want to shoot what isn’t there. What’s in our minds. Melding images together the way our memories come to us. Not clear, sharp, individual pictures, but thoughts and emotions bleeding into each other tangentially. When you remember a party, you don’t remember a single picture of everyone dancing in the living room. You remember the soft but dirty couch you sat on, the ugly chandelier that lit the room, a tree you stared at while sharing a cigarette outside, that one really funny guy you met while waiting in line at the keg, the hallway to the bathroom you walked down too many times, a cleaver door mat and that tattoo on that girl’s back you couldn’t stop staring at all night. It all melds together into one impression. That’s what Multiple Exposures can do that singles can’t. Capture life the way you remember it and not the way it happened.

WALL LOMO WALL

A Lomo Wall is created from a flood of authentic, colourful and awe-inspiring analogue snapshots, also known as Lomographs. Part exhibition, part experience, a Lomo Wall is the sum total of thousands of Lomographs taken by Lomographers from every corner of the globe. So far we’ve built LomoWalls in many a far-flung place, for example, the Photokina in Cologne; Trafalgar Square, London; Beijing, MOMA in New York.

Natalie Zwilinger shoots with the Lomo LC-A+ Old-school Lomographers know her as the queen of multiple-exposure Lomography. World Champion at the Vienna World Congress in 2001, Natalie Zwilinger was the trailblazer that inspired a generation of Lomographers to push their boundaries. Never satisfied with the safe approach, Natalie created a body of work that is to this day still beyond compare.

And then came the burnout. Natalie seemed to vanish. Her cameras likely buried under a pile of clothes in her apartment/silk-screen studio in New York City. This renaissance woman had moved on to other creative endeavors, pursuing her degree in Textiles at FIT. I gave Natalie a roll of film to double in November of 2006, and didn’t see that film returned until February of 2008. It was in her camera the whole time. But now, the prodigal queen has returned. It took the LC-A+ and the new self-portrait kit to reignite this truly brilliant Lomographer’s passion, and the result was this fantastic new gallery of Lomographs. We proudly present to you the third of our self-portrait amigas – the great Natalie Zwillinger. She is the reason I first picked up a Lomo LC-A in 2004, and I am proud to call her one of my best amigos. Enjoy!
