PORTRAIT of an ARTIST
New Trier senior NIKI URBAN shares her artistic passion with Sheridan Road.
“It is truly wonderful to see your child nd her passion,” shares Kim Urban, mother of 17-yearold Nicole, known as Niki. e passion this proud mother refers to is her daughter’s new portrait business, bold black and white paintings of top recording artists rendered out of their own music lyrics —“it has ourished and so has she.” rough her art, Niki has created a booming business that has allowed her to put aside money for her future and help impact the lives of so many others by donating a considerable portion of her proceeds to Lurie Children’s Hospital.
How did you develop an interest in art?
At New Trier, there is an art requirement. I decided to satisfy it my freshman year and fell in love with art. e idea of doing portrait art didn’t come until my junior year. I built a great foundation of skills freshman and sophomore year, but junior year we started applying them.
Tell us about your process and how the business was born.
I think the process came to me through listening to music. Once my family and friends started to notice my artwork, I would get requests for di erent artists. It all started with Bruce Springsteen, my rst big piece. My mom’s friend o ered to pay me for a portrait—I thought the idea was a bit crazy, but I happily obliged. After selling my rst piece, I knew I could turn this passion into a business. Now, I take requests of artists and the customer’s top 10 favorite songs.
What inspires your art?
I am inspired by the way that di erent shapes and words come together. As I am sketching out the piece, it usually looks like random forms and shapes scattered, but the end result looks like a painted portrait from far away, which I love.
How long does it take to create each piece?
I love detailed pieces, so the longer a piece takes, the more I love it. I nd a picture, or get one from the customer, and split it up into black and white tones. I sketch the outline on
paper and designate which areas the lyrics will ll and start writing. Depending on the detail of the piece, it can take anywhere from a day to a week for me to nish.
Tell us about a favorite portrait you’ve created.
My most moving piece of work was for a friend of my sister’s whose mother had passed away from cancer. I was asked to do a portrait of her mother using the daughter’s eulogy and the ‘Footprints’ prayer as the lyrics. is piece meant a lot to me and my family, knowing the family and the impact that I hope it made on all.
How did you come to team up with Lurie?
My mom has been a big in uence because she has been very involved with Lurie. She has served on the Founders Board I believe since 1997. I think giving back to my community and to Lurie Children’s is so important, and the fact that I can give back through something I love to do is a win-win!

THE INTERVIEW
Jody Michael Associates has been helping clients achieve personal and professional goals since 1997. We sat down with MICHAEL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN BRIGGS
What led you to a career in coaching?
Interestingly enough, I started my professional career as one of the rst female traders on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. I spent 15 years in the nance industry, working at rms like Goldman Sachs and Chicago Research & Trading (CRT).
Early in my career, I was promoted to leadership roles and I quickly realized that my true passion was people, not numbers. I learned that I loved developing leaders and coaching far more than I ever loved trading. So it was easy for me to switch gears and switch careers. Everyone around me thought I was crazy— so much so that the guys on the trading oor were taking over/under bets on when I would return. I laughed and said “I’m not coming back to see you … in fact, you will be coming to see me.” at prediction came true.
I went back to school and got a post-graduate degree from the University of Chicago, where I learned not just what worked, but also why it worked. I was, and still am, fascinated by how psychology and neuroscience impact one’s biology and behavior.
What I love about coaching is that it allows me to facilitate transformational change—real change—in individuals, teams, and organizations; I can’t imagine anything more rewarding than that!
Is there anyone who stood out as a mentor or coach to you? Who was your rst coach?
Early in my trading career, I met Dr. Fernando Flores—who is considered one of the pioneers of coaching and a Nobel Prize nominee. He is the individual I credit most for my own transformation, both personal and professional.
I spent three years in an immersive, threeyear coaching program with Fernando, who was not only my professor, but also my professional coach and mentor. It was through this experience I learned the power of systemic, ontological coaching and its ability to facilitate measurable and sustainable change.
How you de ne “coaching?”
At its very core, coaching is a catalyst for change. In some ways, working with a coach is like working with a personal trainer. In order to achieve results, the client needs to do the work, but the trainer brings the expertise to assess, direct, correct, motivate, and support the client along the way.
At Jody Michael Associates, we bring a similar type of expertise, revealing the client’s blind spots, challenging their perceptions, posing powerful questions, and directing experiential practices designed to e ect the change they are seeking in their lives or careers.
We o er a variety of coaching services— executive, career, trading, and wellness—that all share a common goal: to facilitate growth. We help clients achieve greater self-awareness, clarity, observational capacity, and con dence; as a result, they nd themselves nally able to get that coveted promotion, attract more income, cultivate emotional intelligence and executive presence, and lead (their own lives and others) with greater impact and in uence.
What do you look for when building your team of coaches?
We maintain a very high level of discernment in our hiring practices; it’s not unusual for us to sift through hundreds of coaches’ CVs to identify those we even choose to interview. We have very high standards when it comes to credentials, education, experience, business acumen, and personal self-development. Last, but not least, we need to see that spark and energy that is evident when there is authentic passion and love for coaching.
While anyone can hang a sign on their door and call themselves a coach, all of our coaches are certi ed and experienced. Our coaching team has advanced training in human behavior, neuroscience, psychology, and coaching as well as extensive corporate, entre-

preneurial, and trading experience that allows us to quickly absorb and deeply understand our clients’ complex business challenges.
What is the most inspiring (or transformational) client outcome you’ve had so far?
e most shocking client outcome followed what I consider to be my most unusual client request. Most individuals seek coaching to feel better equipped to handle a challenge, close a skill gap, or address some other type of de cit. is particular client came to me because she had overperformed. After having the top-grossing year in her career (doubling her sales from $5 million to $10 million), she was worried that she wouldn’t be able to replicate—let alone exceed—that level of sales in the upcoming year.
Because her company’s policy was to re anyone who sold less in any year than they did in the prior year, she was worried that this performance—which she considered an anomaly—would result in her losing her job.
I convinced her that not only could she sell more than $10 million, but that we would work together to remove any psychological limits on what she could sell. Next year, or in any year. And that is what we did. rough coaching, I was able to help this client completely reframe her belief systems, particularly the ones limiting her potential and her performance.
She proceeded to sell over $100 million the year we worked together.
At the end of the year, when wrapping up our engagement, I asked her: “So, are you leaving your job?”
She laughed, and said, “Oh no … I’m sell-
ing even more than that next year.” And she did.
How does the client help shape the coaching experience?
e individuals I work with are usually successful, ambitious and well-educated. But often when they come to me, they have overplayed their strengths, staying in their comfort zone and neglecting to build the range that they need to be a truly great leader.
A successful engagement requires that the client enter the experience with an open mindset, willing to venture beyond their comfort zone so that they can learn to build that range. It’s also critical that clients make a commitment to focus on, work toward, and embrace change.
How do you continue to transform your own life, personally and professionally?
Every morning, I set an intention for the day. As I tell my clients, it’s a small e ort with a big payback. When you go through life on auto-pilot, letting things “happen to you,” you become reactive. By contrast, setting a daily intention increases your awareness so that you can respond to situations in a very deliberate manner. is increased awareness is the rst step toward making any change, however incremental.
I also have an unwavering commitment to maintaining a growth mindset; I love to learn. From the time I was young, I’ve always been a voracious reader—from memoirs to books about the latest ndings in neuroscience, psychology, spirituality, and arti cial intelligence. I rmly believe that books can help us live far
richer, more robust lives by enhancing our ability to see the world through new perspectives.
If you could be anything besides a coach, what would you do for a living?
Oh, that’s easy. I would be an interior designer. I love transforming spaces almost as much as I enjoy coaching people to achieve personal and professional transformation. I am inspired by beautiful environments and I have a deep appreciation for art. I think my passion for aesthetics is expressed in everything that surrounds me, from the design elements on our website to every piece of décor in my home and o ce. Each is thoughtful, deliberate, and re ective of me and our company’s brand.
You’ve conducted over 40,000 one-on-one sessions thus far in your career. What is one piece of insight you could share with our readers?
Most people su er a lot of unnecessary pain in their lives. ey take things personally, ruminate, fail to see things from multiple perspectives, and have blind spots. ey often fail to make the distinction between the things you can and can’t change.
People tend to forget that life isn’t always fair, things don’t always go according to plan, change is constant, and everything eventually ends. Pain is simply part of the human experience. How well we can deal with the pain lies in our capacity to develop “mental tness”— doing the individual psychological work and spiritual practice necessary to deal with whatever the world throws at you. at’s what allows people to live peaceful, powerful lives.

ERIKA’S LIGHTHOUSE: GETTING DEPRESSION OUT OF THE DARK
What began as a parent’s response to a daughter’s tragic battle with depression has blossomed into Erika’s Lighthouse, a Winnetka-based organization armed with a passion to empower young people and those around them with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and cope with depression.
Since 2004, Erika’s Lighthouse sta and its committed, multi-generational volunteer corps, have worked countless hours to ensure that as many young people as possible hear its message: Although depression is common and may be serious, it is treatable—you are not alone. In 2017 alone, they have touched the lives of over 80,000 individuals in 114 communities and 176 schools across the country.
Its annual gala, on Saturday, May 12, is what helps make it all possible: “ e 2018 Hope Grows gala will be an event during which we hope to cultivate our existing donors and engage new supporters, both of which are so important to the growth of our organization,” shares Kristina Kins, Erika’s Lighthouse Director of Outreach & Development. “‘It takes many hands to tend a garden, and without the support of community members, Erika’s Lighthouse would not be where it is today.”
is year’s event, sponsored by Compass Health Center and Forever Om Yoga, will start o with cocktails and a wine ra e. A seated dinner follows, complete with a live
auction, paddle raise, and dancing to the music of Gritman & Moran.
In addition to planning its spring fundraiser, Erika’s Lighthouse has been working with school partners to prepare the nal version of its newest high school depression education program, which will be o cially rolled out in August, along with its new website, promising a seamless experience for middle school and high school partners seeking information on its school-based programs. As the organization continues to grow into more schools and communities, the Erika’s Lighthouse team will be striving to expand its hopeful and helpful messaging to achieve the greatest possible impact on the community.
2018 also marks the fth year that Erika’s Lighthouse has participated as an o cial charity team in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. “Our rst team came together in 2014 with 7 runners crossing the nish line. In 2015 the number of team members doubled and one year later, 34 brave souls joined the team, including Executive Director Heather Freed, who not only managed the team but also joined fellow fundraisers on the streets of Chicago to run the 26.2 miles,” Kins explains. “In this 5th year of our charity team, we have 46 runners con rmed, and are already putting the word out there, making strides to end stigma!”

THE NORTH SHORE’S MOST CREATIVE PURSUITS
MegMade refurnished bu et
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
AIMEE MAZZENGA
After buying our rst home, my husband and I needed to get creative to accommodate for our tiny but charming bedroom. Calling it “master” would be an exaggeration of epic proportions, ‘epic proportions’ better describing our existing dresser that would need to be jettisoned in favor of something a little less bulky (and certainly more stylish).
By fate, or by Google, we stumbled on MegMade, that same day racing to her sunny shop in the Ra-
PURPOSEFULLY REPURPOSED

venswood neighborhood of Chicago to bring home a chest of drawers more suited to our new space. It was like touring a gallery, Yves Klein blue and bright vermillion popping against the blank canvas of the shop’s crisp white walls.
We quickly honed in on a Midcentury Modern design, accented in soothing gray, that became the focal point of our bedroom. is special piece caught the eye of our neighbors, themselves making the pilgrimage to MegMade that very weekend and coming home with a work of art all their own.
My story echoes the experience of everyone who discovers Meg Piercy’s designs, from rst-time home buyers
to experienced designers: Purchasing a MegMade piece is not unlike curating and collecting the art that goes on your walls, except this art is not only high design, but highly practical.
“As an interior designer, I love working with Meg to nd original, one of a kind pieces for my clients. She has such an amazing eye and is so great with details—the sky is really the limit when you create a piece with Meg!” shares Alex Kaehler of Alexandra Kaehler Design.
Born in Kansas City, Piercy moved with her family to London in high school, crediting the historic city with introducing to her to art, architecture, and design. “Without realizing it, it made an impact,” she

reveals. ough she landed in public relations after college, she admits she always had a passion to do something with her hands.
is passion was realized while pregnant with her rst child: “I couldn’t nd a changing table I liked, so I decided to make one myself,” Piercy shares. Friends rst took notice of what she was doing—transforming vintage furniture nds into unique designs—and from there a business was born.
“Meg knows exactly what paint, wax, technique, etc. is needed to achieve the look I’m after for my client. She is one of my favorite people to collaborate with, and I use her pieces in almost every single project!”
says Claire Staszak, owner of Centered by Design.
From her rst little storefront on Montrose Avenue, Piercy and her husband have grown what was an “artistic hobby” into a successful business, her designs are sold across the country, out of her 8,000-square-foot showroom, via her website, and on Instagram.
Jeannie Balsam, Principal, Winnetka’s Jeannie Balsam Interiors, shares, “One of our favorite selections was a gorgeous dresser we repurposed as a powder room vanity in a distressed black with the original antique brass hardware. It is wonderful that these previously owned pieces are nding new life with a
new generation that wouldn’t speci cally have the vision or talent that Meg brings to the market.”
Piercy credits fashion, architecture, and her favorite design magazines as inspiration. But most of all, she turns to nature when she is running dry creatively, particularly a trip to the ocean or mountains where she can think clearly.
Looking for pieces to repurpose, she seeks out clean lines and character, often Baker or Midcentury furniture, though her latest project includes designing and producing original designs. Piercy was ready to answer the call to further ex her creative muscle, and the result is spectacular: twelve styles thus far rendered in solid mahogany, teak, walnut, and burlwood, with a variety of nishes and hardware, stained or painted in “any color under the rainbow.”
e production process begins with sanding and stripping down to original woodgrain (“I like being able to see the grain through and within the paint”), priming, sanded again, and ends with four coats of lacquer. It takes 72 hours to dry and cure before a piece can be delivered to its new owner.
“We’re combining quality with creative outlet; it’s a real collaborative artistic process,” describes Piercy of her work. “Every piece becomes a story.”

SHIFTING THE PARADIGM A TOAST TO LIFE SPOTLIGHT
Honoring the life of Julie Scha ner, husband Tom and his team of friends and family invite you to raise a glass—and raise funds—at their spring fundraiser, WineHopsScotch!, to join in the ght against ovarian cancer.
THEATER
Beloved Chicago actress, director, and educator, Sandra Marquez is one of the hardest working—and most sought after—forces in Chicago theater. With two back-to-back turns on the Steppenwolf stage, 2018 puts the spotlight rmly on the artist and advocate.
“We’re small but mighty,” reveals omas Scha ner, founder of the Julie W. Scha ner Ovarian Cancer Fund, dedicated to ovarian cancer research, awareness, and early detection, named after his late wife, who passed away New Year’s Eve 2010 after being diagnosed with stage III ovarian cancer only 18 months prior.
In that short time, Julie and Tom discussed doing something to help in the ght against this treacherous form of cancer, what would become her legacy. A product of those talks—and the hard work, collaboration, and creativity of Tom, their son and two daughters, and others who had known Julie from their Wilmette neighborhood—the JWS Fund was created six years ago to honor Julie’s life, her work as COO of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and the other women and families a ected by ovarian cancer.
is loving legacy has helped raise awareness surrounding risk factors for the disease through educational programming and invested in the work of UIC at Chicago researcher Dr. Joanna Burdett, who is looking into the origin of ovarian tumors. e majority of funds, however, are earmarked for Lutheran General and its Cancer Survivorship Center, the rst of its kind in Illinois, which Julie was instrumental in getting started.
eir biggest and boldest fundraising event to help support such generous giving is this month’s WineHopsScotch!, their annual spring event. Guests are invited to “sip and savor,” as the cleverly word-
ed name suggests, South American wines from the Wilmette Wine Cellar, craft beer, and single malt scotch and ne bourbon courtesy of 1792 Small Batch, E. H. Taylor Small Batch, and Stagg Jr. New this year, by popular demand, WineHopsScotch! will also o er a specialty tequila tasting, featuring selections from Corazon, Siete Leguas, and Casa San Matias Tahona.
While they sample the nest wines and strongest stouts, attendees can mingle to live jazz, provided by Shim’s Trio, taste the gourmet o erings of e Entertaining Company, and enjoy interactive exhibitions by local artists, courtesy of the Evanston Art Center, hosts of the event since 2017. “We feel so fortunate to have such a great relationship with the EAC and are looking forward to having the event there again this year!” says Tom.
Joining other friends and family sel essly stepping up for the cause is Wilmette resident Tina Carlson, owner of event design rm Ivan Carlson & Associates, who is providing the décor for the evening and managing “the logistics that make a regular fundraising event look, feel, and operate like a ‘fantastic” event,’” says Tom.
As you engage all ve senses, be sure to treat yourself with a ra e ticket or two—past prizes have included tickets to Hamilton, a wine tasting for 10 at the Wilmette Wine Cellar, Cubs and Bears tickets, wine and liquor baskets featuring topshelf products, and much more.
A true celebration of life and community, the work of the JWS Fund and its signature event are uplifting spirits and truly making a di erence. “We’re proud of what we’ve done,” says Tom. And Julie certainly would be, too.
For more information, to make a donation, or to purchase tickets, visit jwsfund.org. Individual tickets are $150 ($125 with early bird pricing, available until April 16).
It’s a busy year for Chicago actress, director, and educator, Sandra Marquez. Fresh o work shopping a new piece by Marvin Quijada for Teatro Vista, Marquez takes the stage for e Doppelgänger (an international farce), opening this month at Steppenwolf. e world premiere production, also starring Rainn Wilson, of NBC’s e O ce fame, provides an all-access pass to the “backroom deals that shape our world,” complete with untimely accidents and intercontinental disaster.
“It’s an amazing, incredibly intelligent farce about geopolitical issues. You wouldn’t think about putting those things together, but Matthew[-Lee Erlbach, the playwright] is brilliant in how he’s constructed it. It’s very funny,” shares Marquez.
Up next is the Phylicia Rashad-directed Chicago premiere of e Roommate, also at Steppenwolf. Marquez describes the play—a “comical mismatch” between worldly Robyn and sheltered Sharon, wonderfully written by Jen Silverman—as “surprising, lovely, and thought-provoking; it presents di erent perspectives worth talking about.”
In very di erent ways, both productions touch on negotiation and bridging their own unique divides, a priority for Marquez in her own life and work. e rst self-identi ed Latinx inducted into the storied theater’s ensemble two years ago, the California-born Marquez rst began working with Steppenwolf in the late 1990s, around the same time she became a part of the Northwestern University teaching sta , where she has worked since 1995.
“I feel a responsibility to speak to issues that otherwise might not get articulated in a room,” says Marquez, who joined the groundbreaking Teatro Vista in 1997, a company dedicated to sharing and celebrating Latino voices with Chicago audiences. “Before Teatro Vista, I was usually the only ‘brown person,’” she reveals. “I hadn’t realized how lonely that was.”
She continues, “ e founders of Teatro Vista had to create the company in order to get roles, particularly ones that represented their experiences. e numbers are still so low for people of color in leading roles or main stage productions; it’s a systemic issue.”
“It’s a scary time in our country,” she continues, “but it’s also a time of potential and possibility, if people nd the courage to speak their truth and to hold uncomfortable conversations.”
Marquez explains further, noting the role Steppenwolf is playing in moving the proverbial needle: “When you think Steppenwolf, you think internationally-renowned theater. And Anna Shapiro’s tenure marks some big changes—there’s real thought being given to building a theater company that looks like the world. I’m excited to be a part of that.” Marquez shares her experience in preparation for her role in Doppelgänger: “It’s controversial, challenging material. But Matthew and I had a great dialogue about it. By speaking up and voicing my concerns, together we found our way through tricky ground. We really bonded through such open, honest conversation. He’s a delightful human and I appreciated his willingness to listen. I’m so excited to work with everyone involved in this production.”
She smiles, adding, “ e community feeling created here in Chicago really is worth enduring the weather.”

If you’ve taken a solemn vow—as I did when I was a knee-high bambino—to eat as much Italian food as your piggy bank can muster, you know that savvy restaurateurs can shoehorn Italian restaurants into some truly funky spaces. Find yourself a semi-operable gas burner, a fridge to keep the Parmesan fresh, and a larder stocked with enough olive oil to
coat a couple of sauté pans and you have yourself the foundation of a neighborhood trattoria. Mansions. Pantries. Monasteries. Basements. I thought I’d seen it all, until we pulled up to the corner of Merrill Street and Green Bay Road in Winnetka and laid our eyes on a true rst: an Italian restaurant (and a classy one at that) nestled cozily inside the shell of a former auto-body repair shop.
WORDS BY PETER AND KATE MICHAEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
I’m told by my friends in the design world that an appropriate term for a rehab of this kind is an “adaptive reuse project” or “restaurant conversion.” But after slipping into our white leather booth and letting the space wash over us—snow-white walls, dark stained woods, huge nature-inspired murals by local artist Alice Hargrave—the only thing that kept running through my mind was that old cartoon of Cinderella’s fairy godmother turning a giant pumpkin into a glittering carriage.
In this case the fairy godmother in question is Audrey Fosse who spent the last 18 months with her husband, Eric, and business partner, Glen Deutsch, dealing with more drywall and concrete issues than a month’s worth of is Old House reruns.
Somehow they’ve preserved the historic charm of the place—concrete oors, exposed industrial-chic ductwork and giant sliding doors that welcome in summer’s best breezes—while creating the feel a modern-day trattoria.
Chef John Korycki’s menu aims straight for that cozy, grassy-green fairway in the middle of the Italian table. No slithery organ meats. No fermented sh sauces from the age of Caesar. And no postmodern pasta-wrapped meatballs wading in a romano-cheese brodo.
is is simple down-the-middle fare that benets from smart ri s on storied staples. It’s rare, for instance, to nd a fritto misto platter that’s equally

light and KFC-crispy. e secret? Gluten-free cornstarch and sparkling water, which produces a delicate second skin around the calamari and shrimp that doesn’t parka the seafood in those doughy coatings that so often doom dishes like this.
It’s a fun starter, as is the kitchen’s take on burrata, which is drizzled with a verdant gloss of pesto and nested with sweet peppers. e result is so buttery it’s impossible not to smear it on the accompanying toast points and pretend you’re a viscount for the day.
If anything the menu shines brightest with the lighter fare, like the house crudo, which changes daily. Our selection included glistening slices of kampachi—think premium amberjack—that’s marinated in an aperol-esque blood orange jus with sweet fennel, a tapenade, and thin cuts of serrano peppers. It’s Sicily on a plate. Korycki’s menu will please budget-conscious guests as well as those interested in splurging a bit. One could easily make a nice meal, for instance, out of a glass of wine and bowl of pasta, the best of which is a tagliatelle Bolognese teeming with prosciutto, pancetta, and beef. Or perhaps a beer and one of the house’s generously sized thin-crust pizzas, which are also available for takeout.
is exibility has proven magnetic to a wide swath of diners. You’re as likely to see Bob Berger, the former owner of Hubbard Woods Motors that once stood on this site for decades, congregating with his old mechanics as romantic partners savoring seafood and sipping cocktails, the latter of which includes the Li-mona, a refreshing mix of vodka, elder ower liquor, and homemade limoncello.
e entrée list plays things safe, but note the attention to details. A large plank of salmon with a red wine reduction is classic, but the kitchen takes its time with the spinach, blanching away any potentially earthy notes and spritzing them with just the right amount of lemon.
Ditto for the house’s sirloin: tender, a ordable, and cooked perfectly on the house’s wood-burning grill. e accompanying avors have the balance of an Olympic gure skater. Citrus-drenched arugula meets sweet caramelized onions. It hits all the right notes, as does an absolutely dynamite olive oil cake, which is as moist as any nancier in old Paris.
Add some excellent service and you have all the proof you need that 985 Green Bay Road remains a darn ne place to park your car.

Giddy Up in Glencoe
INTERIOR DESIGNER AIMEE WERTEPNY ADDS AN EQUESTRIAN FLAIR TO A GLENCOE PROJECT.
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER BRADLEY, BRADLEY PHOTO
When Suzanne Pappas decided to update her urban suburban Glencoe home, she knew that, more than anything else, she wanted her family’s personalities re ected in the décor. Pappas is a passionate equestrian, which is evident in the design created by interior designer Aimee Wertepny of PROjECT. Partly in honor of what Wertepny calls “horsing around,” the undertaking was aptly nicknamed Giddy Up. “Horses have been such a huge part of my entire life,” says Pappas. “A lot of the elements are inspired by my most recent competition horse C’est Moi, C’est Moi with whom I had a very special connection.”
ose elements include chic, wink-and-nod references to equestrianism, like a saddle poised in the foyer to add a little funk to a spiral staircase, black and white photography of C’est Moi, C’est Moi throughout the home, a set of stools with horse legs in the kitchen, and a special four-piece plexiglass framed set of C’est Moi, C’est Moi’s last horse shoes. “ at was Aimee’s idea, and I could not think of a better way to display them,” explains Pappas. “Simply gorgeous!” In essence, Wertepny explains, the entire home was really an homage to C’est Moi, C’est Moi while also honoring both the family and the way they live their lives.
Wertepny’s favorite pieces are those that embrace what PROjECT has become known for, an organic glam mash-up. “I love the series of six-to-eight foot long black fringe chandeliers cascading down from the second oor,” says Wertepny. “It’s a really fun, whimsical moment with an element of surprise. e wacky element in the library is an ottoman we had custom upholstered in a gray metallic, animal-print, snakeskin-type fabric. It’s shiny but also velvet and is really cool paired up against the zebra-hide and the traditional dark molding.”

HOME TOUR
Wertepny and her team at PROjECT are known for showcasing homes that are unexpected yet still sophisticated and with Giddy Up, the overall aim was to help Pappas pull the home together with some existing pieces while trying to add a bit of pizzazz at the same time. e project scope included interior furnishings and some new lighting, paint, wallcoverings, accessories, and rugs throughout the home. “I like clean lines with a little bit of edge,” says Pappas. “I love the touches of metal, fur, feathers, and tonal texture throughout our home. It just gives me a bit of coziness and comfort.”
So rather than go the predictable route and play o the formal architecture details and rich mahogany bones, Wertepny satis ed Pappas’ love of edgy materials with a black lacquered Demilune, graphic art, Philip Je ries grass cloth on the ceiling, Maya Romano wallcoverings, lots of fur, modern zebra-hide rugs, and petri ed wood. Wertepny also notes Pappas has a love for purple but instead of adding pops of color, Wertepny incorporated the shade with a silky rug in the living room and through art.
“We revved up the excitement with our custom designs and added the sexy surprises, like leather fringe seating o the kitchen,” says Wertepny. “We love that tension of rebellious and polite. I don’t know what our secret sauce is, but it’s just naturally how we play with the elements of design: something light, something dark, something gritty, something smooth. So, across the breakfast area, one sees a very handsome and well-behaved transitional white kitchen.”
To nd those standout pieces, Pappas likes to shop at a few places on the North Shore for interiors, including Material Possessions, Neiman Marcus, and Valentina.
“ ere’s also a lot of online shopping that took place, along with visiting the Merchandise Mart, CB2, and West Elm,” explains Pappas. “And when we travel, we like to nd unique pieces that we can add to our collection so there are great memories tied to each item.”
Pappas was introduced to Wertepny through a family friend. “I was sold the moment I looked through their photos,” says Pappas. “Everything that Aimee does is amazing. Her ideas are pure gold.” Wertepny is equally smitten with Pappas, touting her great eye and calling her a “cool, funky chick.”
Up next, Pappas and her family are considering a move to the Nashville area and would, of course, love to use Wertepny and her team again for the next home. “We’re really happy we were able to give Suzanne a home that re ected her and the way she wanted to feel in it,” says Wertepny. “Design can be a quiet a air or a heart-racing experience. at’s the kind of work we like to see—the show-stopping interiors that inspire us to think and to see di erently.” at said, if they head south, then giddy up!

Afew feet from the entrance to Airoom’s newly renovated 30,000 square foot design showroom in Lincolnwood, fresh micro-greens and herbs are growing inside an illuminated appliance called a hydroponic cultivator. is machine is part of a sleek, state-of-the-art “smart” kitchen, where home cooks can do more than just prepare delicious gourmet meals. ey can also farm their own vegetables...indoors.
e display is one of several inside Airoom’s new Live Center, featuring interactive hands-on demonstrations of the newest, most technologically advanced kitchen and home appliances on the market.
“Food and cooking are a central part of consumer lifestyles today,” says Airoom CEO Michael Klein. “Our Live Center gives homeowners a chance to try out new products without traveling the universe to nd them.”
Built to commemorate the company’s 60th anniversary, Airoom’s reimagined showroom encapsulates the highly successful Chicagoland designer-builder’s enduring motto: “We handle everything so you don’t have to.”
Over the course of six decades, Airoom has completed more than 16,000 home building and remodeling projects in hundreds of communities throughout Greater Chicago. rough its unique “Design-Build” service, Airoom takes ownership of every detail of a project, minimizing customer hassle and expense. Airoom even helps customers obtain nancing for their home improvement projects through its sister company, Lamb Financial, a licensed mortgage broker.
Using its exclusive S.T.A.R.T. process, short for the System to Assure Resources and Timing, Airoom integrates design, construction, timing, budget, logistics, and accountability to successfully deliver a completed project.
“We don’t just put a product in a box and say ‘good luck,’ says Klein. “Airoom is the only place in Chicago where a homeowner can go from design to permitting, to seeing and touching every product and nish, to nancing...all the way to construction, within one company and location.”
In 2017 alone, Airoom completed over 300 Design & Build remodeling projects and custom homes. is high volume, says Klein, enables Airoom to employ and control the majority of its tradespeople, including plumbers, carpenters and electricians, on an exclusive basis.
“Our goal is to take the 10-15 di erent trades required for each home project and thread them together so the customer experiences an integrated approach through only one point of responsibility” says Klein. “We have enough experience, sta , and projects to do this without compromise and at the best prices and I guarantee it in writing.”
Vetting and managing high quality craftsmen, says Klein, enables Airoom to support every project with a service department and warranty system. e industry standard on home building and remodeling warranties is one year or less, but Airoom o ers its customers an unparalleled fteen-year structural warranty and 10-year installation warranty on all completed projects and this year, in honor of our 60 years, a lifetime warranty.
“Based on our years of experience, we know most signi cant and expensive problems surface 4-10 years after a project is completed,” says Klein. ‘ e rst year is usually just tweaking minor details.”
e company publishes a book of glowing recommendation letters and Google reviews written by thousands of satis ed customers throughout Chicagoland.
“We’re very proud of these testimonials,” says Klein. “It doesn’t matter if we’re installing a $150 faucet or a $2,000 faucet, everyone’s expectations are the same.”
Airoom considers itself a warrior for its customers. Having faced just about every possible challenge in nearly every Greater Chicago community, Airoom is uniquely skilled at renovating historic North Shore homes. Before an Airoom Project Development Manager even arrives for an initial consultation, he or she will have researched a neighborhood and studied the appropriate zoning regulations.
“Older homes can be redesigned for modern living,” notes Klein. “You may like where you live, but maybe you don’t love it. When there’s more right than wrong with a house, it makes sense to remodel.”
And whether homeowners want to cultivate their micro-greens, or simply update a tired kitchen, Klein and his crew aim to give every client the house of their dreams.

Rockefeller Center Stage
Sheridan Road highlights the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller at Christie’s— the largest charity auction of all time.
WORDS BY LAURA LAYFER TREITMAN
Provenance, quality, and rarity may be common auction speak, yet the caliber of connoisseurship presented in e Peggy and David Rockefeller Collection, to be sold in May at Christie’s New York, located in none other than Rockefeller Plaza, requires a conversation on its own. e assemblage of masterpieces spans from Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works of art, American ne and decorative arts, and English and European furniture, to Asian works of art, European ceramics and Chinese export porcelain, silver, among other categories. Equally enchanting is the story of Peggy and David’s relationship, both as a couple pursuing their passion for the arts, and as individuals contributing to a life surrounded by beautiful objects and to creating philanthropic communities. e University of Chicago—of which David, who later became Chairman and Chief Executive of Chase Manhattan Bank, was
an alum, and that his grandfather, John D. Rockefeller (founder of Standard Oil) funded in 1890, and where his father, John D. Rockefeller Jr., built the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in memory of his mother—remains a part of the special tie between the family and Chicago.
Cathy Busch, Managing Director, Christie’s Midwest, o ered a special preview of the upcoming auction and art- lled history of Peggy and David Rockefeller, with additional input from Rockefeller family historian Peter J. Johnson and Amy Wexler, Christie’s Deputy Chief Marketing O cer.
When did Peggy and David begin seriously collecting?
Cathy Busch: eir collection started modestly with a few English portraits and prints by Currier and Ives. With the encouragement of Alfred Barr, the founding Director of the Museum of Modern Art, the collection grew to encompass major works of French Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Modern Art— together with a large and important group of American Modern paintings. Many others had an in uence on their taste and choices of things they acquired over the years, however David’s mother, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and aunt, Lucy Truman Aldrich, had the most lasting and profound impacts. In David’s own words: “ ey opened our eyes to the fact that beauty is to be found in the artistic expressions of many diverse civilizations and cultures. ey also taught us that objects created in very di erent times and by artists of very di erent cultures can still go well together and even complement one another so long as they possess one important element in common—quality.”

How did the University of Chicago play a part in David’s formative years?
Peter J. Johnson: In 1929, when David was 14, he took a threemonth trip to Egypt, Syria, and the surrounding region with his parents. James G. Breasted of the University of Chicago Oriental Institute, a research organization and museum devoted to the study of the ancient Near East, guided the group on a trip down the Nile where they visited the major sites including the Valley of the Kings and the various Oriental Institute sites around Luxor. By the early 1920s, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. was the major supporter of the Oriental Institute, having provided funds to build the Institute’s building on the Chicago campus as well as generous funds for endowment, teaching, collections, and additional archaeological work throughout the Middle East. e trip had a powerful e ect on young David, who recalled it with great pleasure for the rest of his life.
One of the Christie’s promotional tag lines of for the auction is ‘Live Like a Rockefeller’... and in their homes from Manhattan to Maine, and beyond, it is said that Peggy and David really did interact with these treasures on a daily basis—is that correct?
Cathy Busch: David Rockefeller credits his wife, Peggy, for the warmth, beauty and decoration in their homes. Peggy Rockefeller obtained a decorator’s license early on in their marriage and furnished all their homes with exquisite good taste and restraint. ey lived with the objects and used them to entertain friends and family—not o -limits or stored in a vault somewhere. Guests have spoken about the experience of visiting—from spectacular seasonal owers from the greenhouse on every tabletop to the most exquisite porcelain dinner services— it was a rari ed and truly memorable gift of hospitality.
Share a little insight on Peggy and David’s connection to Christie’s and the evolution leading up to entrusting the auction house with this iconic sale…
Peter J. Johnson: e Rockefellers both bought and sold objects through Christie’s and got to know not only specialists in speci c areas—but also the senior people in the organization, some of whom convinced David in the early 1990s to digitize the entire collection to make collection management easier and more professional. ey were certainly correct. When the Rockefellers decided that most of the collection would be sold in order to help ful ll testamentary bequests to twelve named philanthropic organizations, the long history of engagement and a careful analysis of the company’s global talents and resources, showed that Christie’s was simply the most quali ed in all areas.
While it is tough to choose, can you give a glimpse of just a few of the MANY top highlights?
Cathy Busch: e three works that will undoubtedly make international headlines are sure to be: a Rose Period Picasso masterpiece, ‘Fillette à la corbeille eurie,’ selected by Peggy and David from Gertrude Stein’s collection with anticipated bidding in the range of $90-120 million; Claude Monet’s

‘Nympheas en eur,’ painted circa 1914-1917 with anticipated bidding in the range of $50-70 million and perhaps the most important work by Henri Matisse to be o ered in a generation, ‘Odalisque couchee aux magnolias,’ painted in Nice in 1923, and having previously belonged to renowned Chicago collectors Mary and Leigh Block. e last work has long been counted among the greatest of Matisse’s paintings in private hands and Christie’s anticipates bidding in the range of $70-90 million. In addition, there is a group of American paintings featuring O’Kee e, Avery, Sargent, Hopper, Homer, Benton, Prendergast, and many others, not to mention Asian works of art, American folk art, and furniture, and an impressive collection of duck decoys and shorebirds by the nest makers. e list is endless!
What has the excitement been like leading up to this spring auction?
Amy Wexler: Perhaps most thrilling is the chance to celebrate e Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller at Christie’s galleries in the heart of Rockefeller Center, which was built by David’s father during the height of the Depression (employing 40,000 people) and today remains one of New York City’s most beloved Art Deco landmarks. We also wanted to be able to share the broader family legacy including the Rockefellers’ endowment of such notable American institutions as Colonial Williamsburg; the Museum of Modern Art; Rockefeller University; the University of Chicago; and more than 20 national parks. If a client is unable to visit Christie’s in person, our website provides access to virtual tours of the works as they are exhibited internationally.
Cathy Busch: e Chicago collecting community will be focused on the Rockefeller property because of its unequaled quality and, of course, the Rockefeller provenance is the gold standard. David had a spectacular and lasting impact in the arts, in education, conservation, business, medicine, and international diplomacy, and
that energy for public service was woven into the very fabric of his life and it’s a story to celebrate—a model for all of us to emulate.
Christie’s is pleased to con rm public preview exhibitions of the Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller the week of April 28 through May 7, leading up to the auctions at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in New York beginning on May 8. e exhibitions, which are open to the public, are sponsored in partnership with private aviation company, VistaJet. KEEPING KIDS TOGETHER
SOS Children’s Villages Illinois’ sibling foster care model makes a di erence.
WORDS BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
SHERIDAN ROAD 89
Children enjoying the All Village Graduation Celebration. SOS Chicago has a 100 percent high school graduation rate, compared to a national average of 48 percent for children in foster care.
There are currently more than 600,000 children in the United States foster care system. Of those children, more than three quarters have been separated from their siblings, to be reunited only sporadically throughout their childhoods, if at all. But what if that separation didn’t have to happen? What if brothers and sisters could stay together, foster parented in one home and one community until ready to transition to adoption or independence in the outside world?
“What if, indeed?” asks Tim McCormick, CEO of SOS Children’s Villages Illinois (“SOS Illinois”). “Studies show that when siblings stay together, they heal, thrive, and ourish,” says McCormick. “Keeping siblings together in an individual home in the care of a full-time, professional foster parent, supported by a community of other caring individuals is the core of what we do at SOS Illinois.”
Now in its 26th year, SOS Illinois was the rst self-funded SOS organization in the United States, operating as its own 501(c)(3) since 1993, and is still setting precedents.
“We have a 100 percent high school graduation rate, compared with a 48 percent graduation rate in the traditional foster care system,” says McCormick.
SOS Illinois was founded as one of the rst two U.S. outposts of—and in an a liation agreement with—SOS Kinderdorf International, established in Austria in 1945 to aid WWII orphans. Since its inception with one village in Lockport, Illinois, SOS Illinois has grown to include four sites with more than 50 homes today. ere are now three Villages in three communities: one with 18 homes in Lockport, Illinois; one with 19 homes in the
Auburn Gresham/Englewood neighborhood of Chicago; and one with 14 homes in the Roosevelt Square Community of Chicago. Plus? Casa Tepeyac, a facility o ering family-strengthening services to Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. is year, more than 500 children will receive care and nurturing from this network, either as foster children living in one of the homes or through the Village’s in-home family services.
To provide all of this care and service, SOS Illinois operates within a $10 million budget. 80 percent of that funding comes from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (“DCFS”). e balance comes from corporate and private donors—donors such as Winnetka’s Bill Forsyth, CEO of Northbrook-based Frontier Partners, and a founder of the New Frontiers Foundation, which was launched in 1996 to provide educational support to disadvantaged Chicago youth.
“I rst found out about SOS Illinois in 2004,” says Forsyth. “ eir objectives and goals were so closely aligned with what we wanted to do with New Frontiers, we quickly became supporters.”
In the years since, Forsyth says seeing the SOS Illinois sta ’s dedication to changing the lives of the foster children in their care, has added perspective to his life.
“I’ve experienced the infectious optimism and outlook the SOS Illinois sta has for these families, the children’s education and their future. [ ese workers] are truly in the trenches. It’s humbling to play a small role by supporting them. e children they care for have the opportunity to live with their siblings in a loving but structured environment. I’ve seen how the stability the children experience here increases the odds of their success.”
Sibling groups at SOS Illinois usually include ve brothers and/or sisters, but each home is licensed to care for up to six children. Children are referred to SOS Illinois by DCFS. e length of time each child stays in a Village is highly individu-

alized. is is partially predicated upon age, and on whether children are to be reconnected with biological family members, or, adopted. On average, children live at SOS Illinois for 2 ½ to 3 years. About 1/3 are either adopted or reunited with family. Another 1/3 stay until old enough to establish independence.
“We have taken in children as young as 2-days-old, on up to 21-years-old,” explains McCormick.
To support the growth and healing of its children, each Village o ers comprehensive services including individual and group counseling and mentoring. SOS Illinois has a sta of 147 full- and part-time workers. is includes foster parents (one for each home), caseworkers, clinical therapists, and direct-care support sta . Foster parents are carefully vetted, says McCormick, to ensure the best
possible outcomes, adding that it normally takes about 200 interactions to nd the right person.
In addition to providing a stable home environment, SOS Illinois seeks to enhance the lives of its children with eld trips, cultural, and social events. ese often happen through the generous support of donors.
“SOS Illinois is fortunate to have a group we call Dream Makers, motivated individuals who work to nd the appropriate resources to enrich these children’s lives,” explains McCormick. “ ings like laptops upon graduation, special celebrations, and college prep exam support.” roughout all, the crucial focus remains on education.
“Education is the key to these children’s futures,” says Forsyth. “ e vast majority of these young people are
every bit as talented and determined as my own children. e only di erence is that my children grew up with more opportunities. In the past 25 years, I’ve been encouraged with the progress I’ve seen—incremental changes that have led to more signi cant advances.”
One new e ort here: SOS Illinois is in the middle of a campaign to build a large community center at 13th and Blue Island as part of the Roosevelt Square Village.
“From the start, every one of our Villages has been designed to become part of the community it serves,” says McCormick. “ e new center will focus on tutoring, educational support, and training for children and families both in the Village and in Roosevelt Square,” McCormick notes. “We are also building a culinary kitchen there that will o er vocational training opportunities. “
e bene ts to both kids and community are myriad.
“People need to understand the ripple e ect SOS has on Chicago,” sums Forsyth. “SOS isn’t just feeding and clothing people. ey’re educating people and instilling con dence. ey’re transforming lives.”
McCormick stresses that supporting the continued operation and growth of SOS Illinois is truly customizable.
“Mentoring, tutoring, hosting a special event for the kids, becoming a Dream Maker…it’s really limitless,” says McCormick. “Not everyone has the ability to be a foster parent, but there are countless opportunities to help.”

Community. Engagement. Education. And, of course, music. ese are the tenets of the Music Institute of Chicago (MIC), which has been leading its community toward a lifelong engagement with music through instruction and world-class performances at its renowned Nichols Concert Hall since opening its doors nearly ninety years ago.
From its original school in Winnetka, the institute has expanded over the years to include additional campuses in Lake Forest, Chicago, Downers Grove, Lincolnshire, and Evanston (two locations). “We have four and ve generations of families studying music here on the North Shore— so many people here invest in their children, and themselves, when it comes to the arts. ere’s a sense of dedication,” explains MIC President and CEO Mark George, a proud Wilmette resident.
He continues, “Some come to us to hone their talent on a particular instrument, some want to connect to that piece of music they have always loved and learn how to play it, and others come here to learn how to take pleasure in listening to music. We reach students as young as six months old and others through their golden years. All in all, we’re a couple of thousand students strong.”
In addition to its Community Music School, which serves all ages, disciplines, and class sizes—from private lessons to group instruction—is the MIC Academy, a nationally recognized program that nurtures and inspires musical growth in talented young adults who hope to pursue music as a professional career.
“ e MIC is a community music school with emphasis on ‘community,’” says George. And this sense of community extends beyond the walls of its many campuses up and down the lake. eir mission also emphasizes community at large, through hospital performances and a longstanding relationship with Chicago Public Schools. As part of their CPS program, MIC faculty visits classrooms to instill the joy of music and integrate and relate music instruction to existing classroom curriculum.
“ is is a population that needs all of the art and nurturing it can get, and the funds raised at our annual gala de nitely help that,” George explains. “It is also an opportunity for us every year to celebrate our students, teachers, and honored guests.”
e MIC’s primary fundraiser, which
typically raises between $800,000 and $1 million (earmarked for music scholarships, nancial aid, and school outreach), showcases the good work that the institute is doing and honors those making a di erence in the eld.
“To host a gala like this, it’s an all-in e ort,” explains MIC Board Chair Scott Verschoor of Lake Forest, himself a student of the institute in piano. Verschoor, who works for professional services rm KPMG, joined the MIC Board about ve years ago, seeking to align his volunteer commitments to his personal passions. “Among many things, what I love about the MIC is that it makes music accessible to anybody and everybody.”
e gala kicks o with cocktails and mingling for the nearly 400 guests, followed by dinner, a paddle raise, and a series of performances by students from the Community Music School, the Academy, and Chicago Public Schools. “Our students, some as young as ve or six, play with such maturity and grace, even if their feet can’t touch the oor from the piano bench,” says Verschoor.
e evening culminates in the presentation of awards to esteemed musicians, teachers, and supporters of the arts. e 2018 Anniversary Gala, taking place this year on Monday, May 21, will honor Frederick H. Waddell, Chairman of Northern Trust, with its Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago.
Waddell shares, “I am honored to be the recipient of the Music Institute’s Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago. e Music Institute has been an invaluable resource in the greater Chicago area for generations. We are fortunate to have such a high quality community music school available to everyone, from beginners to seasoned musicians.”
is year’s Dushkin Award, named for the Institute’s visionary founders, will be presented to legendary violist, conductor, and educator Pinchas Zukerman, who will perform as part of the Zukerman Trio at MIC’s historic Nichols Concert Hall in downtown Evanston on May 20. Zukerman will also conduct a master class on May 21 with Academy and Community Music School students, a free public event and a rare glimpse of a master musician in an intimate setting.
“We pick these awardees not just on the basis of how they play as superstar musicians; they have to have a serious passion for education. Zukerman wants to nurture the next generation of young musicians to keep this art form in good hands,” George relates. “He exempli es the words of David Dushkin, words we live by: ‘Music is not a calling to be pursued in solitude...It is basic to life, like bread and fresh air.’”

“Ilove a good challenge,” confesses Kim Kelley of @ properties, whose passion for real estate was ignited nearly 20 years ago when she was seeking her rst home. rough this rather “bumpy” experience, Kim had an eye-opening moment: She saw not only how important a well-rounded and reliable realtor was to this sensitive process, she realized that she could translate her love of working with people into the real estate world.
Winner of the prestigious Road to Rolex award, presented to @properties sales associates achieving $10 million or more in annual sales, she credits her success to the unparalleled level of customer service and care she provides for her clients: “I pride myself on taking all calls and answering emails and texts without delay; helping buyers and sellers in that moment alleviates so much worry and anxiety. People are always surprised that I respond as quickly as I do!”
Kim has loved working at @properties, where she has been in the top one percent in sales for the past seven years: “Nobody else o ers what @properties does for their agents, or clients, to help them succeed. eir excellent marketing initiative allows me to best help my clients generate buyers for their homes in the most innovative ways with the best technology available in the industry.”
Along with strong communication skills, Kim has a keen eye for pricing her listings.
As a long-time resident of the North Shore, now living in Highland Park with her 15-year-old daughter, Tyler, Kim is an expert on the area and its market conditions. is means that the properties she handles sell quickly, and on average, within 98 percent of asking price.
Meticulous and detail-oriented, she has become known among clients for her adeptness in readying properties for her sellers to maximize their potential. She has a strong team in place, cultivated over her many years working on the North Shore, from stagers, decorators, and her go-to handyman to favorite attorneys and her trusted lender.
For buyers, she brings that same depth of knowledge and dedication to the relationship, always going above and beyond to nd them the place of their dreams while keeping budget in mind. “It’s already been a busy year—lots of people are selling, lots of people are buying,” she says. “I think it will surpass last year, which was my best ever.”
Looking at her listings, among the best across the North Shore, this seems well within reach. ere is 2480 Sheridan
Road, a 1890s Victorian that seamlessly blends history and cutting-edge technology. Located within walking distance of downtown Highland Park, the 11,210-square-foot property situated on 1.4 acres is pure luxury, featuring over $5 million in upgrades: a spectacular master suite and bath to rival any Ritz Carlton, stunning de Giulio kitchen, and a state-of-the-art wine cellar, gym, theater, and audio/video smart system. With high ceilings, a wrap-around porch, and top of the line nishes, the property is listed at a little over $3 million.
In contrast to the over a century-old Victorian is 26 Prairie Court, a contemporary home conveniently located between Deer eld and Highland Park (and in close proximity to great shopping and dining). e modern concrete and glass exterior holds 4,400 square feet of space, boasts a gourmet kitchen, custom closets, its own elevator, a rooftop deck o the master suite with a replace, 2nd- oor laundry, and hardwood throughout, all for a very reasonable $819,000.
“One of my favorite things about the North Shore is its diversity in the style of homes—there can be a Tudor next to a split level, next to a bungalow, next to new construction. at’s what keeps things interesting. Whether they own a $250,000 townhouse or a $6 million lakefront estate, everyone is equally important—everyone gets their text, email, or phone call back in minutes.”

Plastic Surgery Update: Vaser 4-D Hi Definition Liposculpture Plus BodyTite
Liposuction has been around for close to thirty years. It continues to be re ned and improved. Two years ago I discussed hi de nition liposculpture. Since that time I’ve performed hundreds of procedures. Results have been excellent with signi cant improvement over past procedures. It has become a true art form where the underlying anatomy is contoured, sculpted and enhanced. Like every procedure over time one realizes that there are some limitations. e single biggest limitation in achieving the desired result is the status of the overlying skin. More speci cally how elastic the skin is. In the younger patient where the skin tone is better results are more predictable and consistent. In the older patient if there is signi cant laxity of skin the procedure may be combined with skin reduction or excision. It’s that middle group that presents the most challenge. Obviously most patients want the best results with the least invasive procedure. For this group I’m now combining Vaser Hi De nition Liposcultpture to contour and sculpt the body with a minimally invasive treatment called BodyTite.
BodyTite involves temperature controlled radiofrequency energy to heat up the collagen and promote skin tightening and elasticity. It is introduced under the skin following Vaser liposuction to promote skin tightening and contracture. It is safer and more consistent than any other energy source that I am aware of. It allows me to achieve results that before would have required a much bigger invasive procedure.

ECLECTIC COLLECTOR
Vintage cars, a mummy mask, coal from the Titanic … Robert Ritholz owns them all.
WORDS BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The human skeleton Robert Ritholz had purchased at an antique auction in Chicago did not quite t in the back seat of his 1977 Rolls-Royce. ere was only one recourse for the Highland Park native on that day in 2001.
“I placed it in the passenger seat and strapped it in with the seat belt,” recalls the 68-year-old, his bushy handlebar mustache hiding his lips under his perpetually twinkling eyes. “I didn’t want it opping around the car while on my way home. It took me a while to realize that people in other cars on the road might think it to be odd, a man driving alongside a skeleton.
“I received a lot of strange looks, and I’m sure many of the people who saw me driving that day started an interesting conversation at the dinner table later that night.”
e 1968 Highland Park High School graduate owns four other collectible cars, including a 1951 Bentley Mark VI. His other Rolls—a 1953 Silver Dawn Drophead Coupe, one of only ve in the world—has amassed 303,000 miles, and he has raced his 1953 Morgan in vintage races at Road America near Elkhart, Wisconsin.
“Old guys racing old cars,” cracks Ritholz, on the board of directors of the Wroxton, England-based Bentley Drivers Club. “It’s the most exciting thing I do. It requires an enormous amount of sustained concentration, and you have to be constantly aware at all times. I love it.”
Ritholz recently added a 1967 Trabant, produced in East Germany, to his collection.
His father, the late Donald Ritholz, was driven—as an inventor. In the 1940s he designed one of the rst talking dolls ever, one that had a slightly better vocabulary than a newborn’s. It bleated “Mama” at the pull of a string.
Robert’s father later invented one of the earliest forms of contact lenses.
Donald Ritholz eventually sold the patents to both products.
Donald and his wife, the late Vera, liked to ride horses in Lincoln Park, back when Chicago featured bridle paths.
“I was never interested in horses,” says the couple’s only child. “I liked horsepower and anything else that had to with cars.”
Ritholz has been a serial collector of a vast array of items for decades, beginning with his a nity for toy cars as a tot. Dinky Toys— die-cast miniature vehicles produced in a factory in Liverpool, England—were a big deal to him.
Up in his current guest bedroom, which could easily pass for the most eclectic mini museum in North America, an Asian elephant leg abutting the bed could double as a stool or an end table. Other items in the room include zebra hoof curios, countless military medals and helmets, and the human skeleton that once rode shotgun next to Ritholz.
“I like unusual things,” says Ritholz, whose o ce/library on the second oor of his house is home to a wooden mummy mask from the 26th Dynasty of Egypt (600 B.C.), a piece of coal from the Titanic, and Spanish galleon musket balls.
Four degrees of Ritholz
Ritholz graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in history and education and earned a pair of master’s degrees in American history and education policy studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a Ph.D. in history of higher education. “I guess I was trained to be a college professor,” says Ritholz, who has never taught a college class but could tell you anything you ever wanted to know about the Republican Party in 1976, when Ritholz served as a 26-year-old volunteer during Ronald Reagan’s campaign for the party’s presidential nomination.
Too short
Robert and his wife, Michelle, got married in the back yard of his parents’ house (now his house) in Highland Park. Sadly, they were husband and wife for only three months and nine days; Michelle died from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1994. “A lot of things attracted me to her, but the one that is probably foremost is that she and I shared a somewhat unorthodox sense of humor.”
Strange garagefellows
Ritholz, on the ’67 Trabant he bought recently: “Probably the worst car made since World War II. However, it is rather cute in an ugly ducking sort of way. Nevertheless, I have been warned not to park it in the same garage as a Rolls or a Bentley because class warfare might break out.”
Sophie’s choice gig
One of Ritholz’s late aunts, Sophie, worked with a neurologist in Austria and later in London. e neurologist died in 1939; Sigmund Freud was 83.
