AskConnie

Do

brokers only care

about transactions and numbers?

No, not all brokers. For example, I am a “relationship” based broker- not a “transactional based” broker. My goal is for each of my clients to know how important their satisfaction is to me, as I truly care about them. I have found it to be true that people like to work with those they “know, like and trust”. I have never worried about how many houses I sell, that is not important to me. My client’s satifaction is more important to me.

Are there advantages to buying in the winter months before the spring market hits?

While statistically there are fewer homes to choose from in the winter there is also less competition when it comes to other buyers. Buyers are more likely to have higher negotiating power in the “off season” rather than the “traditional” buying season. However, the most important thing is to find the right home for your needs- irrespective of the time of year.

What is the best day of

the year to list my home?

Please note, I am a marketing rebel. I don’t follow the traditional rules for marketing properties. There isn’t a “best day”, instead, the day you make the decision to sell your home is the best day for you. When you make that crucial decision, my team and I will come in and assist you throughout the process. This includes the complimentary pre-listing inspection, staging consultation, and interactive floor plans to start. We make sure to do as much as we can to make this process of helping you net top dollar as painlessly as possible, as expeditiously as possible.

What is the best way to contact you?

Email? Phone Number?

There are multiple ways to reach me, email, phone whether it’s a phone call, voicemail or text. I am here for any and all questions you may have. I pride myself on being available for my clients and I also have a wonderful team in place that responds to emails/calls if I am unavailable.

EDITOR’S NOTE

I’ve always loved winter. For my family and me, it’s a time to embrace togetherness, to slow down, and to practice the art of hygge— an overused word? Perhaps. But one that perfectly sums up our outlook on the cold winter months.

If slowing down isn’t for you, this issue highlights an incredible travel experience at the experiential travel company Eleven’s two Colorado properties. With the mission to ensure that each guest experiences their “best day ever,” each day tops the one before it. For me, day one of the trip included hiking to some of the most impressive mountain vistas I’ve seen anywhere in the world and finding gourmet dining prepared for me at the Movie Cabin—a mid-mountain luxury outpost.

Should you find yourself in Vail, look for Mark Zito from One Last Thing and he’ll share with you advice on the best spots to navigate powder slopes or groomers. And before hitting the slopes this winter, you can channel your inner Olympian by reading about Olympic ski jumper Patrick Gasienica in our story Taking Flight

Staying home? Find the chicest styles for warm weather style in Fashion and warm up by the fire with Rhine Hall Distillery’s delicious European-style brandies, crafted from 100 percent fruit. In our feature story, A Spirited Collaboration, Barrington native Jennifer Solberg Katzman tells the story of co-founding Chicago-based Rhine Hall Distillery with her father, Charlie Solberg.

Wherever this winter finds you, I wish you a wonderful time.

What actress would play you in a movie? A young Catherine Zeta-Jones. She is classy, adventurous, ambitious, and loyal to her family. We also have a similar appearance, back in college people frequently told me I looked like her—I couldn’t think of a better compliment!

Who from history would you want to travel with? It would be incredible to travel with the painter and sculptor Michelangelo. I have a passion for art, especially from the Italian Renaissance, and I have been lucky enough to visit some of the best museums in the world including the Louvre, Uffizi, Prado, and Vatican. Imagine walking the streets of Florence and Rome with the master himself telling stories about the Roman Catholic church and painting the Sistine Chapel. He was friends with some of the most iconic artists of all time, including two of my favorites Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. Seeing Europe through his artistic perspective would be sublime. Where do you look for inspiration? I look to God and to my family for inspiration. These two things matter most in my life and inspire me to be the best version of myself. There are so many distractions in our lives, especially with cell phones and social media, it is easy to get caught up in things that don’t matter. Spending time with God and my family helps me to center myself, stay motivated, and prioritize what is important.

Favorite book? I can honestly say I don’t have a favorite book of all time. My literary interests evolve and change over time. My favorite book I read this year was The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. Most beloved cookbook? The Best Recipe Cookbook is a beast at almost 1,000 pages and was written by a team of top chefs with an obsession to find the absolute best version of classic recipes. The recipes include everything from beef burgundy to chocolate chip cookies. It emphasizes the science behind cooking and describes precisely how to prepare ingredients and meats. Both my husband and I cook, but he is definitely the chef in the family. Everything he has made from this book has been exceptional, and many of the explanations provided in the text have furthered his culinary skills. Some of our favorite recipes include spaghetti alla carbonara and butternut squash soup.

Best dinner party hack? Start the party with a specialty cocktail that is prepared ahead of time. You can have a lot of fun preparing a specialty drink, especially for holidays or parties with a theme— and in my experience, people enjoy trying something new. You can also offer an assortment of garnishes, which allow guests to tailor the cocktail to their taste. A special mocktail can also be made for the kids; they love being offered something different than juice boxes or water.

What’s in your bag right now? My bag is pretty small, which is intentional so I don’t have to send out a search party to locate my car keys. Currently, there’s my wallet, Ray-Ban polarized sunglasses (I’m completely blind without them), Bath & Body Works scented hand sanitizer, Burt’s Bees rose-tinted lip balm, oil absorbing sheets, my favorite blue pen—the Pilot G2, and my keys.

In the 1950s, McGee is believed to have been the first African American to run an apparel showroom’s design studio on Seventh Avenue, the garment district of Manhattan. He initially worked in the atelier of American couturier Charles James. That important connection led Hindman’s Couture & Luxury Accessories Director and Senior Specialist Timothy Long to feel an immediate bond with McGee. “When I was at the Chicago History Museum, I curated the exhibition Charles James: Genius Deconstructed, in 2011, so to know McGee’s link to James made the opportunity for research and scholarship here even more exciting,” shares Long. “For those of us in the fashion and costume history field, McGee is one of those names that is widely known yet not discussed or documented nearly enough—until now.”

Even while he was employed at other firms, McGee always maintained clothing creations that he sold independently. In the manner of high-end salons like that of his former boss Charles James, McGee soon courted a roster of celebrities and entertainers such as Sybil Burton and Cicely Tyson. In the 1960s, McGee opened his first store in New York City’s St. Mark’s Place, and a second followed in Miami, Florida. When he was honored by The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, displaying many of his sophisticated silhouettes, they aptly referred to McGee as the “Dean of African-American Fashion Designers.”

The Collection of Fashion Designer

Arthur McGee, to be auctioned at Hindman on March 14, 2023, brings a selection of 45 ensembles and documents, direct from private hands to a public audience. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1933, McGee learned the art of dressmaking from his mother. Those skills were passed down to her son, who at 18 years old won a design competition and scholarship to attend the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City. He would also pursue studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology before starting his career and establishing a namesake label. Then and now, McGee was not only celebrated for his talents but recognized as a trailblazer in the industry. The net proceeds of the sale of this 45-piece collection will benefit a scholarship for emerging fashion designers from Arthur McGee Legacy, LLC.

McGee passed in 2019, and it has been two of his longtime clients turned close friends who took on the roles of overseeing his estate. They are Maxine Gordon, an author, archivist, jazz historian, and currently a Radcliffe Fellow at The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, and Johnetta Shearer, a realtor at Beachfront Realty in Hallandale Beach, Florida, and a Certified Mastectomy Fitter with MARJ Medical in Boca Raton. Together, they have spent the last few years organizing sketches, photographs, and clothing into a testament of McGee’s legacy.

“At Hindman, we have had experience with archival materials,” notes Long, “having sold that of Geoffrey Beene, for example, giving us a knowledge and understanding of what can be worn and what pieces might fill voids for museums and other institutions or private collectors seeking to acquire.” The total of 15 lots comprise multiple pieces within each grouping, including some separates, and are primarily divided by decades spanning from the 1960s-1980s. “It’s

fascinating to consider the glimpse we can now see at McGee’s practice such as origami, just like the type kids play with, that he used for exploring folds and pleats as a type of pattern,” remarks Long. Below, an interview with Gordon and Shearer provides additional insight into their interactions with McGee, and his contributions, past, present, and future.

Can you talk about how you both initially came to know McGee?

MG: I first met McGee when he had a boutique in New York City. It was a very lively period in the East Village in the late ‘60s. He began to make clothes for me and we became friends for the rest of his life.

JS: I met McGee in Miami, Florida in 1974 when I was the guest of my late friend, singer Phyllis Hyman, who was performing at a fashion show. Arthur McGee’s clothing was featured at the show. I saw his assistant wearing a dress that I learned later was called “The Shower Curtain Dress” and just by seeing that dress, I had to know more about him and the clothes. I became a client that year, 1974.

What was it like working with him? Do each of you have a favorite memory to share?

MG: McGee wanted his clients to wear beautiful garments made from the best fabrics and he wanted them to be comfortable and affordable. When there was a special occasion, we shopped for fabric together and all the people in the fabric showrooms knew him and loved spending time with him. He never seemed to be in a hurry. He made all my maternity clothes in 1978, and before that, in 1975, had begun to make garments for my late husband Dexter Gordon. In 1987, Arthur made all the outfits for Dexter and me for the Oscar ceremony (Dexter was nominated as lead actor in the film Round Midnight) and for the events for a week in Hollywood. McGee also attended the Oscars with us!

JS: It was wonderful to work with McGee—a pleasure to be in his company. He was funny, brutally honest, and just simply cool. His knowledge of fashion that he imparted not only to me but to all his clients is priceless. He really and truly cared about how his clients looked in his clothes. He taught us how to wear them, how to accessorize and how to care for them. We are still wearing pieces he made for us after all these years.

When did the idea to catalog McGee’s archives come to fruition?

MG: Before McGee’s death, he appointed Johnetta and me as his Executors and talked about how he hoped his work would not be forgotten. We began to talk about collecting

his designs and establishing a scholarship in his name for emerging young designers. We formed the Arthur McGee Legacy LLC and will continue searching for more of his classic designs.

JS: I had previously participated in Hindman auctions and purchased items. I mentioned this to Maxine, we talked about it, decided to pursue it and do the necessary work. I contacted Hindman and met with Timothy Long, and the rest is history. We are delighted to be working with Hindman on the auction and are making plans to use profits from the sale to establish a scholarship fund in Arthur McGee’s name that will support emerging young designers.

What is your great hope in seeing McGee’s name and work carry on?

MG: We would like to remind the public that McGee was the first Black designer on Seventh Avenue and was an inspiration to many Black designers who followed after him. He traveled widely and was inspired by clothing he saw in Asia and Africa and his legacy is surely an international inspiration to many.

JS: My desire with this auction is to help educate people about McGee and have them learn what an extraordinarily talented African American designer he was and to keep his legacy alive in museums around the world for the world to see and know his work. His clothes are practical, affordable, timeless designs in fabrics that were classic as well. I feel that he deserves the recognition this auction can give him and that museums will acknowledge his importance as well.

A favorite piece in the sale?

MG: I would say for me it is Lot 5. It has pieces made for me from African fabric he kept rolled up in the studio. He kept adding pieces over a long period and was very pleased with the outfits and the way they could easily be folded to pack for travel.

JS: Mine is the rhinestone black cashmere coat, Lot 9. This coat is a piece that McGee did for the Coty Awards. I always wanted to get that coat to Prince because he would have been the person to wear that coat, but I never got the opportunity. The rhinestones on it are set by hand which makes it even more special.

Bidding for the March 14 auction will begin at 10 a.m. and will be available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room. Registration for the auction is available at hindmanauctions.com/auctions/1156-spring-fashion-accessories. For more information, visit hindmanauctions.com.

CHILD SUPPORT

Child support is an obligation of both parents to support their child until the child is 18 years old or has completed high school—whichever comes second. Typically, one parent will pay the other a set amount of money each month to help with living expenses for the child. This support cannot be waived by the parent receiving the money as the money isn’t intended to be used for themselves, but for their child’s well-being.

Discussions around child support begin once the custody agreement has been reached. The visitation schedule is a large driving factor in the amount of money one spouse will pay so it must be determined first. Once a custody agreement is made, the parties then move on to a martial settlement agreement. This agreement determines how the assets will be divided, whether and how much spousal support (also known as maintenance) will be paid each month, and the amount of child support the parties will be responsible for.

Many people believe the dollar amount of child support is negotiable, however, this is not the case. Child support is not calculated based on wrongdoing or perceived faults during the marriage or divorce—it’s not determined by the judge’s evaluation of which party is the best parent. Child support is calculated using a complicated math equation that is created by the legislature. This complicated equation takes approximately 30 variables into account. While some are obvious, such as the number of overnights and each parent’s income, others, like who pays health insurance, are not.

The first step in determining child support is knowing who will be receiving it. As mentioned above, the visitation schedule is the key factor in this determination. If one parent has over 60 percent of the overnights, the other parent will owe them child support—even if the parent with more visitation has a higher income.

Parents who have less than 40 percent of the overnight visits will pay significantly more child support, even if the difference is only a few days. For example, Parent A and Parent B split visitation evenly. Parent A has a higher income, and

the equation determines that they owe $500 a month for each child. If Parent A reduces visitation to 41 percent a month, the child support will likely remain the same. However, if their visitation drops below 40 percent, the amount they are paying will double.

Who has greater visitation is also significant as this parent will likely get the tax benefit from each child. Tax benefits might seem like an insignificant consideration, but they can have a large effect on the parent’s net income—and net income, not gross income, is what child support is based on. Therefore, as state and government taxes reduce each parent’s gross income, the tax filing status of each parent is considered in the child support equation.

Spousal support payments can also affect the amount of child support. Although they are calculated separately, maintenance is considered income for the parent receiving it and reduces the paying parent’s income by the same amount, which will reduce the income gap between each parent and affect the child support calculation.

For example, if one parent makes a net income of $3,000 a month, but their spousal support is $4,000 a month, their income would be $7,000 a month. If their spouse makes $13,000 a month and pays $4000 in maintenance and spousal support, their income would be $9000 a month. The gap between their monthly income is now $2,000 rather than $10,000 for purposes of calculating child support.

In situations where the higher-earning parent has over 60 percent visitation, child support payments may offset the amount of spousal support they owe their spouse. Consider this example: Parent A has 65 percent of the parenting time, meaning Parent B has to pay child support, which has been determined at $1,000 each month. However, Parent B makes significantly less money than Parent A. Thus, Parent A owes $3,000 in spousal support each month. Rather than exchanging checks, the child support is deducted from the spousal support, meaning Parent A now pays $2,000 in spousal support, rather than the full $3,000 per month.

While the concept of child support is straightforward, the statutory equation is complex. Therefore, uninformed decision-making can easily and negatively impact your outcome. Contacting a qualified attorney will increase the chances of securing the best results for your children and yourself.

A Spirited Collaboration

Barrington native Jennifer Solberg Katzman tells the story of co-founding Chicago-based Rhine Hall Distillery with her father, Charlie Solberg.

Between the ages of 10 and 18, former Barrington High School soccer star Jenny Solberg often climbed trees in her neighbors’ yards in the fall months and shook, shook, shook the limbs.

The center midfielder—now 34-year-old Jenny Solberg Katzman mother of a precious hat trick (Sienna, 4; Wade, 2; and Eva, six months)—had placed a sheet of tarp atop a stretch of lawn to serve as a gathering material for falling apples.

Or plummeting pears.

“You could say I was cross-training in the trees,” the she says with a laugh. “But I never told my high school soccer coach about it; he probably would have considered it unsafe.”

Katzman’s father, Charlie Solberg, had sanctioned the lofty activity. Back then, the patriarch of the family needed the fruit as step one in the five-step process of producing a fruit brandy. The other four steps: chop fruit (via a bicycle-powered chopper); press fruit; ferment fruit; distill fruit.

“It was my family’s hobby and passion,” says Katzman. Her father had learned to distill in the abundant fruit-growing region of Austria, where he’d played professional hockey as a forward.

Years later, when Katzman was living in San Francisco and working for the international tech company Meltwater, her husband, Taylor, encouraged her to morph the passion project into a

business.

Katzman then ran the idea by Solberg.

“My father told me he’d start a business with me, but only if I moved back to Chicago,” Katzman recalls.

Head east, young woman. And that’s what she did.

The father-daughter entrepreneurs launched Rhine Hall Distillery in 2012. Katzman runs the day-to-day operations of Rhine Hall, a distillery with 14 products that focuses on European-style fruit brandies. These delicious brandies, crafted from 100 percent fruit, are described as eau de vie (water of life).

“Or,” Katzman elaborates, “the purest expression of fruit.” Solberg, 69, also owns Solberg Manufacturing, an industrial equipment supplier based in Itasca.

The production space at Rhine Hall—located in Chicago’s Kinzie Industrial Corridor and named after the Austrian ice rink Rheinhalle, where Solberg once skated and slapped shots for a salary —is open to the public for tours, tastings, cocktails, events, and more.

“My father is innovative, always has been, and he’s someone who doesn’t like doing things conventionally,” says Katzman, who after Barrington High School earned an NCAA Division I soccer scholarship at the University of Vermont.

“He’s also a sounding board for me, as well as a mentor,” continues Katzman, the youngest of Solberg’s five children. “What I love about what I do is building relationships with growers and makers, along with learning all about the fun ways other cultures make products. My husband and I went to Normandy, where I learned how the

French make apple brandies.”

Katzman majored in European Studies and minored in marketing at Vermont.

How prescient.

She took an entrepreneurship course in college and—eerily—had to come up with a marketing plan for picking and selling apples (yes, apples) at a farmers market. The professor was impressed and praised Katzman for creating a cogent, sumptuous presentation.

“What my professor said to me that day motivated me to pursue a business career,” Katzman recalls. “I remember it so well; I can see her now. I’ve been goal-driven all my life. I like having a goal in mind and putting the pieces of the puzzle together to get there.”

Rhine Hall Distillery has been a great success thanks to the potent

blend of a committed father-daughter combo.

“A fruit brandy is a difficult product to make, and it’s challenging at times to source fruit (apples, pears, cherries, apricots, and plums, among others),” Katzman says. “But we’ve figured out how to be successful at it. We’ve done that by staying loyal to fruit-based products—our core.”

But the best part of her career to date has nothing to do with Rhine Hall Distillery’s bottom line and everything to do with her business partner.

“I’m the luckiest girl in the world to work with my dad,” Katzman says.

Taking Flight

A Q & A with Olympic Ski Jumper Patrick Gasienica.

For Olympian Patrick Gasienica, ski jumping has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. Coming from a long line of ski jumpers, it was only natural he learned to mount skis before he could lace up his own boots.. Gasienica was born on the South Side of Chicago, but when he was 2, his parents moved the family to Utah where the snow is fresh and the slopes are steep. It was there that he homed in on his true love for the sport. Fast forward to when he was 14, his family moved back to Illinois where his father made sure they were near a ski jump hill—the Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove near Barrington. In 2022, after countless competitions, Gasienica found himself in Beijing competing at the 24th edition of the Winter Olympic Games. We sit down with the Olympian and get an inside look into his ski jumping world.

Q: How long have you been ski jumping?

A: I have been ski jumping ever since I could remember how to walk. If I had to guess, I was 4 years old when I first went down a ski jump and found it to be the thrill of a lifetime. Still do!

Q: What got you interested in ski jumping?

A: In Europe, ski jumping is a huge sport, and with my parents both being from Poland, ski jumping runs in my family. My dad is the one who introduced me to the sport. However, it was my granddad who taught my dad, who then taught my sister, and then finally me. I have other family members, like cousins and uncles, who have also ski jumped.

Q: What goes through your mind as you’re jumping?

A: Not a lot goes through your mind while you’re going down the hill. At takeoff, however, I tend to get hyper-focused, and all other thoughts go out the window besides what I need to do. I get into the flow state on

top of muscle memory, so it’s difficult to try to think of anything else other than what you need to do at that takeoff.

Q: Who is your inspiration in the sport?

A: I have always looked up to the Polish legend and former ski jumper Adam Malysz. I remember always wanting to imitate what he did on the hill and trying to be just like him. I actually got the chance to meet him, and it felt like a kid meeting his favorite superhero!

Q: When did you start competing?

A: I started competing as soon as I could go down a ski jump. However, serious competitions started happening when I was around 16 years old, which is when I qualified for the Junior World Championship in Romania.

Q: How did you find yourself at the Olympics?

A: I was able to qualify for the USA Olympic Ski Jumping Team after scoring in an FSI Ski Jumping Continental Cup competition and earning the points to get on the team. I scored points in China, too, a couple of months before we went there for the Olympics.

Q: Tell us about your time in the Olympic Winter Games, Beijing 2022.

A: The Olympics were a crazy time. It was also in the middle of the pandemic. It was tough because while my life dreams were being fulfilled, it was also at the back of my mind that it could all get taken away so quickly.

Q: What about that experience are you most grateful for?

A: I worked very hard and made countless sacrifices to get to the Olympics. It was an honor to represent my country at the highest level and something I will forever cherish and remember. I will forever be grateful to the sport and everyone who helped me get to the point.

Sweet Heart of a Tart:

Vegan Fresh Fruit and Custard Tart (Gluten, Dairy, and Egg Free)

Whenever I hear the words, “Valentine’s Day,” this rhyme always comes to mind:

The Queen of Hearts, She made some tarts, All on a summer’s day; The Knave of Hearts, He stole those tarts, And took them clean away.

These lines, written in the 1700s by an anonymous poet, were part of a poem inspired by a deck of playing cards with each suit represented by rather scandalous stanzas. From spades to diamonds to clubs, there’s drubbing, clubbing, seduction, shenanigans, and a knave in each verse. Set to music in 1785, I can’t help but wonder if the song was popular at rowdier pubs of the era. All that aside, this beautiful tart shares none of the poem’s wickedness. It is both worthy of a queen and healthy for your heart. Featuring a gluten and dairy-free crust, it’s filled with a delicate coconut almond-milk custard (dairy and egg free) and topped with fresh strawberries and raspberries. You can glaze the tart with a little melted jelly if you like, but it’s freshly sweet without it.

SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CRUST

• 2 cups almond flour

• 1 cup gluten-f ree flour

• 1 stick (1/2 cup) cold vegan butter (use solid sticks, not whipped), plus more to coat tart pan

• 2 tablespoons sugar

• Finely grated zest of one lemon

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 2 tablespoons very cold almond milk

FOR THE CUSTARD

• 1, 13.5 fl. oz. can coconut milk

• 2/3 cup almond milk

• 1/4 cup pure cane sugar

• 1/4 cup corn starch

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla paste or 1/8 teaspoon seeds scraped from a vanilla bean (optional)

FOR FRESH FRUIT TOPPING

• 1 cup f resh raspberries

• 1 pound container fresh strawberries, hulled and cut into thin slices to make heart shapes

METHOD

MAKE CRUST

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously coat the sides and bottom of a removable-bottom 11-inch tart pan with vegan butter. Set aside. In a wide, shallow bowl, stir dry crust ingredients together with a fork. Cut vegan butter in small pieces over the dry ingredients. Using a fork or fingertips, break butter into small pieces and work into the flour until mixture resembles wet sand. Add 2 tablespoons almond milk and work into the dough. Gather dough into a ball. Spread work surface with two overlapping pieces of plastic wrap to make a 13-inch x 13-inch square. Flatten dough into a disc in the center of the wrap. Cover with two more overlapping pieces of plastic wrap to make a 13-inch x 13-inch square over the top. Roll dough out to a 12-inch circle. Remove and discard top sheets of plastic wrap. Lift and flip dough circle over into prepared tart pan. Press dough into pan, using the trim to patch any cracks. Prick bottom with tines of a fork. Cut parchment paper to fit bottom of tart; place into crust-lined tart pan. Fill with dry beans or pie weights. Bake for 15 minutes at 350. Remove parchment and beans; bake for 15 more minutes until crust is golden. Remove tart crust from oven. Cool on a rack.

MAKE CUSTARD

Combine all ingredients in a heavy-bottomed saucepot, over medium heat. Break up the coconut solids. Whisk just until mixture begins to boil. Reduce heat to low and continue whisking until thickened. Remove from heat. Scoop custard into a wide bowl to cool to room temperature.

ASSEMBLE TART

Once custard has cooled to room temperature, smooth custard into cooled tart crust. Push up on the removable tart pan bottom to carefully press tart out of tart pan; place on serving platter. Place tart in refrigerator for 30 minutes or a bit more until custard has set. Remove from refrigerator. Decoratively arrange raspberries and spiral fresh strawberry slices on top of the custard. Serve immediately.

DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW EQUITY PARTNER

WILL MY DIVORCE BE IN THE PUBLIC RECORD?

Typically, any documents filed with the court are part of the public record. Judges are reluctant to seal divorce files even in high-profile cases. As a result, filings will likely be accessible to the public, which may contain personal details, as well as allegations made by one spouse against the other, even if not ultimately proven true.

Many counties have websites on which all the filings are now accessible online allowing easy access to anyone who may want to view them. Further, Covid has forced most divorce proceedings onto Zoom and many courtrooms are also streaming live on YouTube allowing anyone to watch divorce court in the comfort of their own homes.

To address these issues, litigants may enter a protective order which limits what documents and information may be

filed with the Court. Also, the final divorce agreement may be incorporated “by reference only.” This means that the file will contain the Judgment for Dissolution of Marriage, but the specific details of the settlement will not be filed with the Court. Finally, confidentiality issues have made processes like collaborative divorce and mediation more popular in the past decade. Both focus on reaching an agreement outside of Court.

Best Day Ever

Eleven’s Colorado Properties Shine as Brightly as the Rocky Mountain Stars.

Ever wonder what the perfect outdoor vacation would feel like? One in which neither your skill level nor an unexpected turn in the weather could dampen the day’s greatness? Wonder no more. Adventure collective Eleven boasts a remarkable portfolio of intimate properties in remote corners of the world—each offering incredible lodging and delicious, seasonal food combined with private guided outdoor adventures for guests of all ages and skill levels. Eleven has perfected the art of curating finely tuned vacations tailored to each guest’s unique preferences at that moment in time.

After a short flight to Gunnison, Colorado, I was welcomed at Eleven Scarp Ridge Lodge in the charming town of Crested Butte with a genuine warmth and excitement that contributes to making Eleven, well, an eleven (not a ten out of ten, but an eleven out of ten). Each property’s thoughtfully designed interiors are by No. 12 Interiors, and not a detail is missed as evidenced by each room’s “oxygen” button—should guests wish, they can select to pump oxygen into the room to offset the effects of altitude. Guests are greeted in the family room where an impressive brick fireplace radiates warmth next to dedicated guest lockers in which bulky ski jackets, boots, and other items can be stored for the duration of your stay. Shiplap walls and wood beams throughout have updated this original Croatian Assembly Hall into an outdoor adventurer’s launch pad—also the perfect spot for multi-generational family trips due to the myriad of activities offered.

Waking the next morning to a chef-prepared breakfast of local eggs and vegetables, I was fueled for the five-mile hike ahead of me. Starting at 10,000 feet in elevation, we hiked the Scarp Ridge trail—gaining 2,500 feet in elevation to witness awe-inspiring views of the Colorado Rockies above the tree line. At the end of our hike, we were treated to lunch at their mountainside Movie Cabin, built in 1975 as the set for a film called The Adventures of the Wilderness Family. Beside a roaring fire, we enjoyed a lunch of the most delicious pork pozole I have ever tasted—to this day I’m trying to track down the recipe—paired with a fresh salad of julienned vegetables and a cilantro lime vinaigrette that sang with flavor.

In winter, this area becomes accessible only by snowcat—perfect for Eleven’s winter cat skiing experience. Looking over the side of the impressive mountains, I had trouble imagining the courage needed to ski down, but that is why many of the Scarp Ridge Lodge guests come to Eleven—the elite and private experience of cat skiing a terrain where you are the only one on the mountain carving fresh tracks. How exhilarating it must be to be picked up in front of Scarp Ridge Lodge by a giant, customized snowcat (outfitted with leather benches and a TV) and then driven up the mountain to begin a day of unforgettable winter adventure.

Eleven’s staff members readily imbue your trip with local knowledge, and our guide was no exception. Explaining that we were in town during peak foliage season, a slight detour was made to an overlook of a valley awash in astonishing yellow leaves from miles

of aspen trees. Returning from a full day of outdoor beauty and adventure, and after enjoying a quick après in the rooftop hot tub, we toured the town of Crested Butte. Its charming, brightly colored Victorian-era buildings house independent shops ranging from apothecaries to art galleries. The thriving restaurant scene includes Public House, Eleven’s in-town restaurant. This modern-day saloon features a spectacular menu, including a goat cheese and pickled blueberry salad, and a pan-roasted whole trout paired with a red wine farro risotto. The top floor of Public House has three loft suites for lodging as well as a basement music venue that hosts public and private concerts alike.

True to Eleven’s mission, day two was also an eleven. Exiting my luxurious suite, I was greeted outside with a dual-suspension mountain bike. Biking alongside a river underneath a brilliant blue sky with the dreamiest of white puffy clouds, our novice selves were pushed slightly past our comfort zones, allowing us to feel the exhilaration of mountain biking the largest single-track biking system in the country.

That afternoon, we were transported 30 minutes to Almont to experience Eleven’s other Colorado property, Taylor River Lodge— home to eight log cabins including a single-family home that’s ideal for larger families. Here I was given my own log cabin, perched on the banks above the roaring Taylor River. When not in the perfectly outfitted cabin, stocked with Aesop bath products and cozy Pendleton blankets, I explored all the property has to offer. After trying my hand at archery and ax throwing, I enjoyed a beer tasting from Irwin Brewing Company (Eleven’s Colorado-based brewing company). The Amber’s Lager and Mexican Lager were my favorites. The

bonfires and hammocks scattered across the property were ideal spots from which to savor both a beer and the gorgeous mountain views.

I began the next morning with yoga and then moved on to fly fishing—one of the most meditative and calming activities I have ever experienced. Under the expert tutelage of my guide, I caught my first of two fish by 11 a.m. Standing knee-deep in full gear provided by Eleven, I had an overwhelming sense of calm while I methodically and repeatedly cast the fishing line; a scene made even more magical when it started to snow.

After my active morning, I was treated to an Ashiatsu massage. An expert in her field, the massage therapist’s unique treatment alleviates any stressors in your life. Holding on to ceiling bars, she walks on your back using her feet to massage. Sounds different but trust me when I say it is a must experience and one that I hope to have again. After the rejuvenating massage, I headed to the Bath House, an exquisite stone building set next to the river beside an enormous rocky cliff with a gigantic floor-to-ceiling glass door that opens upwards to the sky for a true indoor/outdoor experience as you alternate soaking in the hot tub, dipping into the saltwater pool, and enjoying the steam and sauna. Launching this winter, Taylor River Lodge will be hosting annual wellness retreats. Think snow bathing, meditating in a winter wonderland, yoga, and healing foods. Its primary ethos is to connect you to the natural world, teaching guests to take learned tools—like simple breathwork—home.

Each night guests can select a different dining experience by choosing from the seasonal menu, creating a custom dish, or cooking alongside the in-house chef. On our last night, we indulged in a fireside dessert of s’mores under a canopy of brilliant, sparkling stars. Waking up the next morning to fresh coffee and a breakfast sandwich for the drive to the airport had me thinking how long it would be until my next Eleven experience.

Available by room or for full property private use buyouts, Eleven lodges are ideal venues to focus on outdoor adventure pursuits and escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. For more information, and to book your Eleven experience, visit elevenexperience.com.

3 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS MONTH IN 60010

A N EW YEAR AND A NE WLY ENER G IZ ED MARKET

After a two-year roller coaster ride, the 60010 market has largely stabilized over the past several months. But with local inventory still at its lowest point in the last 10 years (only 85 single family homes were on the market in the entire Zip code as of Jan. 13, lowest ever) and demand remaining strong – not to mention the fact that mortgage rates are down from the highs we saw in October – I’m anticipating another highly competitive market this spring.

F IRST-T IME HOMEBUYERS ARE LOOKING TO 60010

Interestingly, one major new demand driver here is the ongoing normalization of hybrid work models for many Chicagoland professionals. For years, the prospect of a 50-minute, 5-day-aweek commute from Barrington to The Loop has taken Barrington off the list for many young homebuyers. But with many companies now only asking employees to come downtown once or twice a week, I’ve been talking to more and more young professionals who are looking to put down roots here.

A PART NER YOU CAN RE LY ON

Are you looking for more space? Or are you ready to right-size into a property that has less maintenance than your current home? Do you have family member looking to buy their first home? Simply waiting for the right home to appear on Zillow won’t cut it. You need a Realtor who goes above and beyond to get the job done. Social media, door knocking, working off-market properties, and great relationships with other brokers are all tools that I can leverage on your behalf. Let me help!

’81 SKI-DUDE

Mark Zito—a 1981 Barrington High School graduate—has worked in the ski industry for more than half his life. We caught up with the mogul of the moguls.

Barrington native Mark Zito spent each summer in high school on a boat in Wisconsin. He vacationed and worked in the Badger State, with the boat doubling as his seasonal home.

His late father, Jack Zito, had bought a Door County marina in 1968.

“I’d return to Barrington, in time for the start of school each fall, and I can’t tell you how many people came up to me and said, ‘Hey, I thought you had moved,’ ” recalls a chuckling Zito, a 1981 Barrington High School graduate. The 60-year-old now resides way above sea level—some 8,200 feet—in Avon, Colorado, the state he has called home since 1984.

“Boating and yachting interested me until I was 19 or 20,” Zito says. “I even got my captain’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard. But the mountains called me.”

And enthralled him, especially the ones wrapped in snow. Buhbye, sailing. Hello, schussing.

“You’ve heard the saying, ‘Go West, young man,’” says Zito, a regular at Wisconsin’s Wilmot Mountain Ski Resort back in his geometry/study hall days. “Well, that’s what I did.”

Zito enrolled at—where else? —the University of Colorado Boulder, befriended members of the school’s hyper-competitive NCAA ski team, and heard from a buddy that Spyder, a manufacturer of high-end ski gear, was looking for warehouse help.

Zito landed the job.

“Got up the next day at 4:45 a.m., and went to work, packing boxes,” Zito says. “The year was 1984.”

This year?

Zito is the store manager of Vail Sports at the base of Vail’s Gondola One in Colorado. Vail Sports is owned by Vail Resorts Inc.,

which happens to own Wilmot Mountain Ski Resort. Zito’s shop provides custom rental solutions, a huge selection of equipment and apparel, and the Valley’s most professional staff.

“Skiing can be complex,” says Zito, who, for 25 years, served as a sales rep for a number of companies and worked for the Nike of ski products, Rossignol, for 10 years. “For example, ski boot fitting might not seem like something major in our industry, but to me it is. It’s an art, and I treat it as such. Skiers need to be in the right ski boots.”

“It’s no fun,” he adds, “if your feet hurt while you’re trying to enjoy a ski trip.”

Looking for advice on the best spots to navigate powder slopes or groomers? Ski guru Zito is your man in that realm, too.

“The entire ski industry still exhilarates me, but not just from a business standpoint,” Zito says. “I love the outdoors, the fresh air, the rush of skiing downhill, and the social aspect of it.”

Zito returned to the Barrington area during the winter of 20122013. The youngest of Jack and the late Noni’s six children, he lived with brother Kevin in Island Lake to be near his elderly parents.

During that time, Zito became a fixture at Viking Ski Shop in Barrington. “I now see Viking customers at my store in Colorado; I get phone calls from them as well,” says Zito, whose wife of four years, Tina, owns Remix, a consignment store in Edwards, Colorado that features a wide array of luxury items.

Zito’s memories of Barrington range from frequenting Dunkin’ Donuts and 7-Eleven to blasting pitches at the ball field behind his family’s house in Fox Point.

“I kept a low profile when I was young,” admits Zito, a cancer survivor. “Barrington is a great little town. My parents provided a stable childhood for me. I’m proud of where I grew up.”
