N

estled in a suburb outside Chicago, Buckley Fine Law provides big-firm experience with boutique service, strategically coupling corporate law with estate planning to help clients create lasting legacies. When handling corporate transactional matters, estate planning attorneys are called upon to ensure estate tax planning and wealth restructuring are coordinated, especially if there is a sale of the family business or other changes in family dynamics. “Our firm provides superior estate planning and administration for clients that coordinates with our in-house corporate group to evaluate and assist clients with both personal and professional legal matters,” says Linda Fine, managing partner. This approach is made possible by the firm’s attorneys, seasoned professionals who work collaboratively for each client and value building long-lasting relationships to assist throughout the generations. “We are familiar with our clients and their families, many of whom have been with us for 15 to 20 years,” says David Buckley, Jr., managing partner.

BC_1123_Master_Ads.indd 5

“Although we do transactional work, the client relationship is never based on a single transaction; it is long-term and based on their needs,” he continues. “We help people from the beginning to establish their business and handle anything from routine employment contracts to mergers and acquisitions. It is rewarding to see a client’s successes as the company grows, requiring advice on the purchase or sale of other businesses and succession planning.” Fine adds the same is true for estate planning services. “We may become involved when a client first starts planning for their future. Then, throughout their lives, we address our clients’ changing needs, helping them protect their wealth as they plan for it to pass to the next generation,” she explains.

“We keep communications friendly and simple, presenting information clearly so clients feel comfortable,” adds Fine. Transparency and integrity mean clients openly share details of their lives knowing their attorneys are there to proactively plan for their future and ensure the best possible outcome for their family. “It is never too soon to put an estate plan in place,” advises Fine. “We can help families prevent potential disputes so there is nothing to argue about later.” “We start discussions with clients early,” says Buckley. “We raise options and opportunities to help them start the decision-making process to achieve the best results for the future.”

Approachable Advocates The attorneys at Buckley Fine are highly engaged and strive to make clients feel comfortable when seeking legal advice. “People think talking to an attorney is scary,” explains Buckley. “Our consultations are conversational and are used to learn the client’s needs, identify their concerns, and explain the process.”

Connie Antoniou answers all of your real estate questions, please email me at questionsforconnie@gmail.com

What do you suggest I do to prepare my home for the winter?

Here are some key suggestions I have for my clients who wish to prepare their home for the winter months. Feel free to contact your real estate professional for advice on their preferred vendors or contact me for assistance.

Clean Gutters: Remove debris from gutters to prevent ice dams and damage. Check for sagging gutters and tighten or replace as necessary. Ensure downspouts extend at least five feet away from the house. Inspect the Roof: Check for damaged or missing shingles. Look for rust spots on flashing and other warning signs. Pay attention to moss, lichen, and other indicators of potential decay.

Detach Garden Hoses: Disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent freezing and potential damage. Turn off shutoff valves on water supply lines leading to exterior faucets. Drain and store garden hoses.

Ensure Proper Drainage: Soil should slope away from the foundation to prevent water accumulation. Ensure soil isn’t touching the siding. Check the Furnace: Schedule a heating system checkup. Replace furnace filters and built-in humidifier filters if applicable.

Drain Sprinkler System: Shut off the water and automatic controller. Drain the system and shake out above-ground sprinkler heads. If no drain valves, consider hiring a pro to blow out the system.

Prune Plants: Keep branches at least three feet from the house. Seek regional advice for specific plants.

Seal Air Leaks: Use exterior caulk to seal cracks around the house. Focus on areas between trim and siding, window and door frames, and where pipes/wires enter the house.

Inspect the Fireplace: Ensure the damper operates correctly and the flue is obstruction-free. Check the firebox for any damages.

If you would like to discuss your unique real estate needs confidentially, you may call or text me at +1 847.508.7775 or email connie.antoniou@sothebysrealty.com.

elcome to the November issue. I hope you are as inspired as I am by the story on Kate Marker and her husband’s newest endeavor of restoring historic homes in Barrington. The glimpse inside her masterful renovation of her Barrington Hills home is truly breathtaking—and as it’s newly on the market, it could be your new home. Inspiration continues in the story of Kai Glowacki’s walking 621 miles across Spain following the famed trail of The Camino De Santiago. The gorgeous photos and his journey are truly remarkable. Our Beauty, Fashion, and Home Style sections provide a delightful array of new goods to liven up your routine. And our recipe of a mouthwatering pheasant dish might just tempt you enough so that you serve it this holiday season in lieu (or alongside of ) more traditional Thanksgiving fare. Speaking of Thanksgiving, I always feel that November is the month when I start to look around and feel so fortunate to have this community; I’m sure you agree. The guest didn’t want us to have to worry about a making ourselves a meal the next morning, and it was the most thoughtful (and useful) thing ever. Gift to give: A nice serving dish. COUNTRY L OVES| UP FRONT Swarbrick standing tall in Lela Rose red dress, nemainmarcus.com.

What actress would play you in a movie? Although I know we look nothing alike, I’d choose Reese Witherspoon. She strikes me as someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously and really tries to enjoy life. Being a good mom and a good friend are things she prides herself on, and I share those same values Who from history would you want to travel with? Jimmy Buffet. My dad bought me a Margaritaville Margarita Maker when I was in college and told me that was how I was going to make friends … and indeed I did! So, with margaritas being a favorite pastime and never meeting a beach I didn’t love, I think Jimmy and I would get along great! Where do you look for inspiration? My family and friends are my ultimate source of inspiration. I’m so thankful to be surrounded by beautiful souls every day. But sometimes when I lose myself in trying “to do it all,” I often turn to @ alifefromscratch’s Instagram page. She reminds me that simply caring for your family and home is always more than enough. Favorite book? Is it cheesy to say Tuesdays with Morrie? I haven’t

found a better one. Most beloved cookbook? These are lesser known books, but it’s a toss up between One and Planned by Lillie Biesinger. I came across her simple, healthy eating Instagram page a few years ago and have been cooking from these ever since. My husband AND kids love every single thing I’ve made from them, which is an extra bonus! Best dinner party hack? While I love cooking for my family of 4 each night, cooking for a large group of people intimidates me. I guess my best hack is to cater it … and to hire a bartender. I enjoy hosting so much more when I’m relaxed and actually have time to mingle with my guests. Leave the heavy lifting up to others so you can spend your energy making sure your family and friends are having a terrific evening. What’s in your bag right now? 99 percent of the time I only carry a lululemon belt bag. So not much! A card case with credit cards, cell phone, keys, my hospital ID badges, a couple BandAids and apparently a mini Harry Potter LEGO figurine at the moment. That’s what you get for having a kindergarten boy! JWC | COUNTRY 23

WHY GUMS

MATTER With the connections between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease, knowledge is power. WORDS BY DR. JAMES T. GAVRILOS

A

lzheimer’s disease has touched the lives of so many. Researchers have not been able to clearly define a cause and effect for it. Despite the billions that have been spent on research, thousands of people are diagnosed with the disease each year and are given little hope for

a cure. A recent study has given researchers new hope in getting to bottom of this complex disease. Bacteria that cause gum disease have been isolated in the area of the brain that is believed to be causing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

A complex plaque of bacteria builds up in the brain in this region and the “gum disease” bacteria are among the findings. It is thought that the bacteria act to destroy that area of the brain in the way they destroy gums and bone around teeth. We have known for years that gum disease increases your risk of cardio vascular disease. The same “gum disease” bacteria flow through the blood stream and attach themselves to the arteries and valves in and around your heart. With time, the plaque builds and closes off the arteries and gives rise to the threat of cardio-vascular disease. Past research has shown a link of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. Researchers knew that the two were correlated but did not have answers as to why. With the new information being brought to light, the studies are following the possibility of gum disease being the causative factor for both. In other words, the cardio vascular disease does not cause Alzheimer’s but rather gum disease is the contributing factor to both cardio-vascular disease and Alzheimer’s. There is a lot left to do in this area of research. If future findings can show causation instead of correlation of gum disease and Alzheimer’s, then research will begin on methods to help stop or cure this horrible disease. In the meantime, you can help protect yourself by flossing every day and having your gums checked for gum disease by your dentist. Any sign of bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth is usually an indication of the presence of gum disease. Dr. James T. Gavrilos is located at 129 Park Avenue in Barrington. Gina Scola

was born in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago and grew up in Hoffman Estates. The past nine years, Scola has lived in South Barrington with her husband and two rescue pit bulls. Scola’s interest in philanthropy started when her children attended various private schools, and she became more involved when she joined The South Barrington Garden Club in 2019. Meeting people within the community, forming relationships, and giving back is extremely rewarding for her, and her work with The Garden Club has been very fulfilling. When time allows, Scola looks to place “furry friends” in their forever homes as she also volunteers with several rescues.

t age 65, Kai Glowacki, a Barrington local, knew he wanted a challenge that was not so much of a goal as it was a must-do journey. “It simply was a matter of time,” Glowacki says. “And finally, in 2023, it was that time, and I am very happy I accomplished it. It is said that you walk the Camino after a loss of a loved one, or when you’re in a crossroads in life. For me, it was a long time longing, and with the loss of my mom in November 2022, the Camino was calling, and I had to go.” The Camino de Santiago, or The Way of St. James, is a well-loved excursion, an on-foot pilgrimage that dates back to medieval origins, leading walkers to the northwest of Spain to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Much like the pilgrims who would have begun their trek from their front doors, there are no precise starting points. Depending on individual inclinations, trekkers can begin at one of the many different trail networks in Spain, France, Italy, or Portugal. While many ramblers from around the world are on a personal pilgrimage, traveling to Santiago since the 10th century to see the tomb of St. James, buried in Santiago’s cathedral, others are interested JWC | COUNTRY 39

in doing a thru-hike to marvel at historic sites and monuments, get outside in diverse landscapes, meet other walkers, or learn about multiple cultures along way. While he had done some hiking before, including a pilgrimage in Poland (twice) when he was in college, the Camino Frances plus the Camino Finisterre would prove to be an entirely different experience for Glowacki, requiring training beforehand to prepare his body for the long walk ahead. And, besides gear like wool socks, sturdy hiking shoes, The Benedictine Monestary of San and hiking poles, Glowacki says that Zoilo, Carrion de Los Condes, Spain mental and psychological preparation was vital as well. “It was an enormous pleasure to finally follow my dream to walk Camino de Frances,” Glowacki says. “I passed many villages and towns, full of amazing cathedrals and architecture, while in the outdoors and in nature.” The Camino Frances, also recognized as The French Way, is one of the most popular routes of all the Camino de Santiago routes. Other routes, for example, include Camino Portuguese (ideal for social hikers), Via Francigena (best for foodies), Camino Del Norte (most difficult route), and Camino Finisterre (best for photographers). Featured in a number of well-known books and movies, including The Way with Martin Sheen, Camino Frances typically begins near the gateway town of Saint Jean Pied de Port and culminates in the holy town of Santiago de Compostela. Trekkers will travel on foot through striking towns and regions, full of cultural

n October 26, the interior design talents of Barrington Hill’s Kate Marker was revealed to the public again—this time for a House Beautiful Whole Home renovation, just south in Hinsdale. As one of 15 women professionals renovating the historic David Adler house, Marker custom designed a space previously used as the front porch into a library lounge. “It’s a really cool space,” Marker says. “I wanted to be part of this project because it’s a historical house in an area that reminds me of Barrington. It spoke to me.” Since 2007, Kate Marker Interiors has been the Barrington-based flagship company for Marker, who as owner and principal designer, sets the pace and tone for the full-service residential design studio. new homes and full remodels, Marker admits to having a passion for renovating heritage homes, which is why her interest in the Whole Home project goes even deeper. “That house reminded me of our house,” she says, referring to her family home in Barrington Hills. “The similar plumbing, the plaster walls, unique millwork, curved staircase—there were a lot of elements that remind me of Buckley.” Since 2020, Marker, her husband Ken, and their two children have lived in this Italianate home in Barrington Hills, which Marker affectionately refers to as “Buckley.” It was built in 1926 by Charles Buckley and sits on 10 acres at 160 North Buckley Road (named after Charles Buckley). The estate had only three previous owners before the Markers. “The people we bought it from had it for about 50 years,” Marker recalls. “When we walked in the door, there was a feeling that this was the house and next project for our family. As a designer, I felt the responsibility to do my work thoughtfully, with the mindset of leaving a home for the next family. I intended to restore it, update it for modern tastes, but always celebrate the beauty that was already there.” As the Marker family home for these past three years, it’s undergone extensive renovation and welcomed additions to both the home and the grounds. Marker recently listed the 9,210-squarefoot Buckley in September for just under $5 million. It stands now as a modern showpiece of Marker’s skills with heritage houses. Buckley features six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and two half-baths as well as a guest house with a full kitchen, living space, and en-suite bedroom and bathroom. The main house kitchen includes a built-in coffee station, a walk-in pantry, marble and soapstone countertops, dual Sub-Zero refrigerators, and an ILVE Italian range. There are high ceilings throughout. A mudroom, like no other, comes with built-in lockers. An old ballroom was converted into an entertainment room with a full bar leading out to the heated saltwater pool and hot tub pergola. Marker kept the entryway’s original bluestone floors, which were far too shiny (think new car showroom floor). Knowing it wasn’t

the right look, she hired a stone specialist to return the floors to their original finish, with more of a raw, matte appearance. The nearly 100-year-old floors appear new again. “There are so many tone variations to pay attention to in materials like that,” Marker explains. “And texture is also a huge part of my design taste. I don’t use a lot of color, but I love to enhance space with the full textures of natural, organic elements,” she adds. Marker updated Buckley’s interiors, brightening them and opening the walls where she The spacious dining room boasts could; always plaster walls, Italianate crown highlighting molding, and reclaimed wood original areas cased openings melding old-world that show off charm with modern grandeur. character while being beautiful design elements themselves. From the beginning she noted the fine Italianate craftsmanship that’s survived since the house’s early 20th century construction. “I have grown to appreciate my role, not as the owner of a heritage home, but a steward of the space celebrating the past, present, and future. It is my job as an interior designer to help others see that.” Marker adds. “The plasterwork on the walls, and the moldings are pretty ornate. While that’s not necessarily my style as a designer, I appreciate the history of the Italian artisans who came over 100 years ago and did all that work by hand. There wasn’t even a thought in my mind that I would rip that out. An old home reflects years of love and life within the walls and in this case the molding was on the walls and too special to not adore.” Marker says. While retaining its classic quality, Buckley also appears fresh and timeless, a signature of Marker’s work. She says the project pushed her further than any previous renovation because it required balance between history and the desire to make it a nurturing environment for her family—while actively maintaining the mindset of leaving a modern home for the next family. In addition to running Kate Marker Interiors, Marker opened Kate Marker Home in Barrington in 2019. The same year, Marker and her husband launched Kate Marker Vacation to feature rental properties she designed—two in Michigan and one in Florida. But her heart is with Barrington. JWC | COUNTRY 45

“We’ve now renovated four homes in the Barrington area. It’s full of history and stories and there are a significant number of older homes that, with some love, attention, and design expertise, can truly be turned magnificent,” Marker says. “My ultimate desire is to keep renovating and restoring homes here and is a big passion of mine with my husband moving forward. Not enough value is put on what an old home has to offer. They give us unique space

to live and grow. Since Barrington is a town full of history, I think people that live here appreciate the value of older homes, but there are a lot of people scared to go down the renovation path. I hope to shift that.” For more information on Kate Marker Interiors, visit katemarkerinteriors.com.

Pheasant Ballotine with Sausage, Herb & Pistachio Stuffing RECIPE, WORDS, AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

J

WC Media publisher John Conatser still remembers early teen travels to South Dakota where his older brother owned a spread of land perfect for hunting game birds. “In the fall, I’d travel there with my father for the opening of pheasant hunting season,” he recalls. Now with five sons of his own, Conatser keeps up the tradition in the Midwest. “The boys all show interest in participating,” he says. “It is quite a thrill to bring home several pheasants after a hunt, dress them, and make a meal for your wife and kids to enjoy. In fact, we only eat wild game I’ve hunted for our Thanksgiving and other special holiday meals.” As a sport, pheasant hunting goes back to 16th-century England. Royalty there became obsessed, capturing huge numbers of birds at one go before restrictions were put in place. (A team of seven led by King George V of England, for example, bagged

3,937 pheasant in one six-day period in 1913.) But while the royals were in it for the sport, here in the Midwest, preparing delicious recipes with the birds is the better half of the deal. This beautiful pheasant ballotine is a great example. Because pheasants are small, I’ve used three, two and ½ pound birds—enough to feed a family. And while most of us don’t have access to pheasant caught in the wild, farm-raised birds work just fine. The word ballotine is from the French balle or “package,” referencing versions of the dish where birds are completely deboned, the meat chopped and combined with herbs and other ingredients to be shaped, wrapped, and cooked like sausages. For this ballotine, however, while the breast, back, rib and wing bones are removed, the legs and thighs are left intact. The deboned portion of the meat is laid open to be filled with a sausage, herb, pistachio, onion,

and brandied prune filling. Everything is then tucked back in place to be stitched up, wrapped with bacon, and trussed for roasting. To ensure a very moist result, I brine the pheasant with herbs, onion, and peppercorns overnight. I then debone the bird, fill it with the stuffing, and allow it to air dry a bit for a crisper skin when roasted. Because the legs and thighs take a little longer to roast than the stuffed ballotine, I slice and plate the ballotine portions after roasting, returning the leg and thigh halves of the birds to the oven for an extra 10 minutes. Tucking small red, gold and purple potatoes, and perhaps some carrot and parsnip around the pheasants makes this a one-dish meal. And for the gravy, simmering the wings and bones you trimmed away will provide you with rich broth to extend the pan juices.

Pheasant Ballotine with Sausage Herb Pistachio Stuffing

METHOD MAKE BRINE

In a large stock pot over medium heat, bring 2 quarts of water to a boil. Add salt, sugar, and syrup and stir to dissolve. Cool to room temperature. Add herbs, peppercorns and onion. Add remaining 2 quarts of water. Pour all into a large lidded container. Rinse pheasants and place in brine. Cover container. Refrigerate overnight.

MAKE STUFFING

In a skillet over low heat, slowly cook onion in olive oil until onions are soft and translucent. Cool. Place pitted prunes in small microwaveable bowl with brandy and heat for 40 seconds to plump prunes. Cool. Dice prunes and add with brandy to a medium sized bowl. Add cooled onions, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, sage, thyme, lemon zest, ground pistachios, and pepper. Mix well.

DEBONE PHEASANTS

Remove pheasants from brine and pat dry. Working one bird at a time, on clean worksurface, flip pheasant onto its breast. Do not remove the neck skin. Using a boning knife, sharp kitchen shears and great care, remove wings. Slice through skin to the backbone cutting down along the length of the bird, to open cavity. Remove rib bones, breast bones and cartilage and leave meat and skin in place. Remove wishbone doing the same. Carefully slicing against the grain, partially cut a thin flap of the breast meat on both sides of the bird, leaving each partially attached. Flip each over on either side of the bird.

Generously pepper the pheasant. Place 1/3 of the stuffing down the center of the cavity. Lift both flaps of breast meat and skin back up and around the stuffing to reform the bird. Fold the neck skin up and over to cover center gap. Using a trussing needle and cotton thread, stich the skin together. Working one strip of bacon at a time, starting just below the legs, wrap the slices of bacon from under the bird all the way around to the top, leaving the ends of the bacon on top. Flip bird over (now breast-side up). There may be a large gap without skin over it near the neck. Stretch the surrounding skin to cover gap a bit and stich closed with cotton thread. Once you have tied the legs together, any remaining gap won’t show much. Using kitchen twine, truss the bird around its width from the underside up over the bacon at regular intervals, knotting the twine to hold the stuffing and bacon in place. Truss two more times lengthwise.

Finally, tie the legs together. Place trussed pheasant on a platter uncovered in refrigerator while you repeat with the two other birds.

ROAST PHEASANTS

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place pheasants in roasting pan. Surround with small potatoes (and carrot and parsnip if using) Drizzle a scant bit of olive oil over all. Sprinkle with thyme leaves and several more grinds of black pepper. Roast pheasants for 1 hour until deeply golden and internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Remove from oven. Lightly cover with foil and allow to rest for 15 to minutes before slicing and plating the stuffed portions of the ballotine with the roasted vegetables. Return the leg and thigh halves of the birds to the oven for 10 more minutes to ensure doneness. I like to tuck fresh sprigs of thyme and sage around the bird for a pretty presentation.

n the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula, where the Persian Gulf meets the Arabian Sea, is found the earthly paradise of Oman. In ancient times, Oman was renowned for its frankincense, fishing, and metalworking. Now, its spectacular landscapes, rich culture, and heartfelt hospitality have made the country a must for discerning travelers. The late and much beloved Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al-Said led the modernization of the country and paved the way for the creation of Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. The resort’s location—perched on the rocky shoulders of the Sayq Plateau and blending seamlessly into the fabled Green Mountain—gives it the distinction of being the highest five-star resort in the Middle East and amongst the highest in the world. The resort’s name is a homage to the Green Mountain, which derives its distinct green hue due to its rich content of iron and chromium. In the rainy winter months, this appearance is enhanced by the verdant shrubs that pop out of the mountain’s craggy surface. On Turkish Airlines we flew from Chicago to Muscat via Istanbul. Disembarking from the aircraft, we immediately admired the all-white traditional dress of the Omani men who don simple white gowns (dishdashas) with their heads crowned by embroidered caps (kummahs). Our driver met us for the two-hour drive into the mountains. Once difficult to reach, the area is now accessible via a superhighway that leads directly from Oman’s capital into the heart of the mountains. Note, if you are driving on your own you will reach a checkpoint where guards will not let you pass without

a four-wheel vehicle. Apparently, many unwitting tourists had to be rescued after venturing into the mountains without the proper automotive power. Upon arrival at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, our villa host guided us through a labyrinthian lantern-lit pathway to our two-bedroom, three-bathroom private villa. A heavy wooden door opened to reveal a foyer that led to an expansive living/dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private pool enclosed by three ochre walls that boasted explosions of magenta bougainvillea. The large bedrooms, both en-suite, flanked either end of the open floor plan. The master bath was an area unto itself, housing a huge circular shower with a 12-foot ceiling from which hung the largest rain shower head I have ever seen. Beyond the shower was a deep soaking tub encircled by tub-to-ceiling windows that overlooked a private walled garden. For changing, carved sliding wood doors concealed his and her dressing rooms. Throughout the villa, an array of elaborate metal chandeliers, sconces, and carved cedar doors provided a visual celebration of Omani artisanship. The next morning, we saluted the sunrise from “Diana’s Point,” an outlook named in honor of Princess Diana who visited the location before the hotel was built and fell in love with the view. After several photos of the sunrise’s vivid pink and orange hues, it was off to breakfast where the bountiful buffet offered a variety of local cuisine—spicy curries, omelets, pastries, porridges, and an assortment of salads and cheese accompanied by pressed juices, teas, and delicious coffees. A bit of something for every taste, and the perfect fuel for a day of activities. After breakfast, my husband and daughter tackled rock climbing

aka a perilous adventure where one hangs off the side of a cliff and engages in a delicate dance between nooks and crannies appearing on the face of the steep rock. This trek is one of the highest climbing routes in the Middle East and provides intrepid travelers with a unique way to experience Green Mountain. My daughter loved the experience so much that she signed up the next day for the “extreme” version that included a jaunt across the Middle East’s highest suspension “bridge” (a tightrope really). when she and her guide (a former member of Omani special forces) emerged from the side of the cliff. Smiling ear to ear, Redding exclaimed, “Mom, you do know that the best view comes after the hardest climb.” While I am sure that statement is true, I chose not to test its veracity. On another morning, we explored three archaeological sites and traditional villages. Following in the footsteps of our skilled guide, we scaled up, up, and up the side of a mountain for a glorious view of two crumbling ancient villages. Nestled into the rocky contours of the cliff, near a source of water, and built of mud and clay, these villages had housed generations of mountain inhabitants before they moved to the “greener pastures” funded by the country’s oil-driven economic boom. On the trek, our guide pointed out several fossils formed when these mountains were once the sea’s floor. This area has become a source for geo-tourism as the region’s universe of fossils is easily viewed against the dark rock. In one village, we walked along the ancient falaj water irrigation system bringing fresh spring water to cliff-hanging terrace farms. Treading carefully along the semi-treacherous path, we passed fig and pomegranate trees, bushels of jasmine and lavender, and blanJWC | COUNTRY 57

kets of pink roses. This olfactory extravaganza was enhanced by the canyon views of lush fruit orchards cascading down terraced slopes and descending into the deep valleys. The path meandered through villages and valleys ending at an ancient staircase so steep it seemed to lead to the heavens. We chose not to ascend but watched in awe as an elderly farmer toting a bushel of leafy greens swiftly scaled the steps. Our April visit coincided with the bloom of the rare Damask rose. This rose blooms just a few months of the year and is used to create the region’s world-famous rose water. We were lucky to visit the home of a rose water proprietor who invited us in for dates and tea. He shared the traditional technique of distilling rosewater using a mud oven called “Al-duhjan,” a vessel called “Al-burmah,” and a copper bowl to capture the treasured liquid. This ancient technique is still being used by farmers today. After we returned to the resort, I headed to the Anantara spa. As the spa menu is wide and varied, my decision might have been difficult but our day’s adventures influenced my choice of the 90minute “Rose Rescue Ritual.” In a tranquil setting befitting Anantara’s elevated standard of spas, I felt renewed after experiencing the soothing, balancing, and hydrating qualities of the rose petals and luxuriant oil. It was a relaxing lesson in this country’s centuries-long love affair with the fragrant flora. We began most of our evenings by watching the spectacular sunset wash the canyon in pigment. Nature’s extraordinary show was followed by a feast at Al Maisan or Bella Vista. Perched high above the canyon, Al Maisan specializes in Southeast Asian, Indian, and Arab specialties. This eatery serves delicious global cuisine with ingredients that are freshly harvested from the Arabian Sea and local farms. We chose Bella Vista when we craved traditional Italian fare with a contemporary flair. At either venue, we savored delicious dishes while transfixed by the incredible views. As our trip continued, we descended from the mountain’s heights and journeyed to the southern coastal city of Salalah. The city is set in an environment of white beaches, coconut palms, gardens of lush vegetation, and camels, camels, and more camels. During our April visit, the landscape appeared a bit “desert-like.” However, our

Anantara’s Al Baleed Resort Salalah

guide explained that during the monsoon season ( June to August) waterfalls appear on mountainsides, the terrain is carpeted in emerald green, and large lakes emerge in meadows attracting a variety of brightly colored migratory birds. We all agreed that we would return one day to see this terrestrial transformation. Anantara’s Al Baleed Resort Salalah is a quick drive from the airport and is nestled between an expansive white sand beach and a freshwater lagoon. In true Anantara fashion, the accommodations were stunning. A private gate opened to the crown jewel of our two-bedroom villa—a courtyard with a pool, two “day beds,” our own private beach, lounge chairs, and a seating area—all with views of the lagoon and Al Baleed Archeological Park. My husband celebrated a birthday on this trip, and one day we arrived to find that the villa had been festively decorated in his honor—just one example of Anantara’s attention to detail. The resort boasts an endless array of daily physical activities— think beach yoga, Thai boxing, tennis, and intense workouts with a trainer. Experiences ranging from mobile camping in the Empty Quarter to an encounter with the Omani dolphin to traditional cooking lessons with the resort’s chef will satisfy those who seek an appreciation of Oman’s beauty whether it be on land, sea, or in the kitchen. Kids would love the pools, beaches, kids club, and camel rides along the pristine beach. For those who crave a calmer itinerary, lounging by the pool or visiting the spectacular spa are your tickets to paradise—I highly recommend the divine frankincense massage. Excited to learn more about the country’s history—both natural and archaeological—we opted for a guided tour of Salalah. What

an experience! In one short day, we visited soaring cliffs overlooking cerulean waters, walked the paths of long-ago trade routes (think 300 B.C.), traversed century-old ruins, and learned all about frankincense. The Wadi Darbat (the Darbat Valley) was a tour highlight. This valley area was teeming with camels, donkeys, and cows (the latter two are darling miniature versions of their U.S. brethren), and we often ran into “camel jams.” When these long legged fellows chose to cross the road, we had no option but to enjoy the view. The camels were equally fun to view from a distance; the sight of hundreds of camels walking nose to tail against the backdrop of the colorful and rugged mountains was truly breathtaking. While the camels were so entertaining, the Wadi Darbat’s natural landscape, with its shimmering emerald pools (the color is derived from the mountain’s mineral content and appears almost effervescent) and expansive views of the coastline, was the real star of our tour. We ended our day at the stunning ruins at the Al Baleed Archaeological Site dating back to 850 A.D. (and built on ruins dating back to the Iron Age) and a tour of the Museum of the Land of Frankincense. I have always been fascinated by frankincense’s long role in human history from the Christian tale of the three kings’ gifts for baby Jesus to the current-day essential oil trend touting its

healing powers. And here I was on Omani soil learning about this ancient trade in a port city dating back to 300 B.C. Truly a one-ofa-kind experience. For those travelers who wish to travel well but also wish to follow paths less taken, Anantara’s dual properties are the ideal destinations. From mountain top to sandy beach, Anantara’s curated experiences immerse you in Omani culture while its resorts envelop you in breathtaking luxury. A Passion for Fostering Community Lake Barrington welcomes Sharon Peterson as the new village administrator.

E

WORDS BY JANIS MVK / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

arlier this year, Lake Barrington welcomed Sharon Peterson as the new village administrator, and the future of the village continues to shine bright with her at the helm. Since May, Peterson graciously stepped into the role previously held by Karen Daulton Lange, who for the last six years made an influential and indelible mark on the community. As Lange went on to retire, Peterson effortlessly took on the position to begin a new chapter for the village bringing a fresh perspective and a passion for fostering community. With 25 years of municipal experience, Peterson is adamant about making a difference. For her, it all starts with providing customer-centric excellence. “I plan on translating first-class customer service into my role with my interactions with the residents of Lake Barrington and the business community,” she says. “My customer-service approach not only applies to the residents and the business owners of the village, but it’s important to me that the elected officials and village staff are treated with respect and gratitude as well.” To provide such a high level of customer service, Peterson dove straight into processes and procedures by assisting in updating the building permit software. “Once the new system is put into place, the entire process should be simplified,” she says. “I’m excited about this because the project was in its early stages when I came on board and it will be exciting to see how it is once it is finished, making this a much more seamless experience.”

Next up on her agenda is bringing in more businesses to Lake Barrington to bolster innovation and growth for the community. “I enjoy receiving the phone call from a developer who is interested in a particular property and wants to meet in person to discuss what type of business they are looking to bring to the community,” she says. “These local and small businesses are what makes up the community, making each community unique and we need to recognize and support them.” Leading by example, she is an advocate for shopping and dining locally. “The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce has done a great job in promoting and advertising our local businesses and their events,” she says. “The more I settle into this role and the community, residents can find me attending more of these events so I can get to know the residents and business owners better and develop a personal relationship with them.” In addition, she plans on supporting Lake Barrington’s local and small businesses by not only shopping and dining at them herself but also recommending them to friends and family members, too. “I look forward to getting to know the residents and businesses better, and I’m certainly looking forward to enjoying all of what Lake Barrington’s restaurants, shops, and people here have to offer,” she says. “It’s such a beautiful community and I’m really proud to say I work here.” Village of Lake Barrington is located at 23860 N. Old Barrington Road in Lake Barrington, 847-381-6010, lakebarrington.org
