Selling your home in the fall season

One of the key benefits of selling your home during non-peak seasons, like fall and winter, is the lower competition. For years, the housing market has faced record-low inventory, with the national supply estimated to take about three months to sell, half the usual pace. In many local markets, the timeline is even shorter. However, inventory is slowly increasing, and many experts predict that spring 2024 will bring a significant boost in housing supply. Listing your home before this surge allows you to tap into strong demand while competing against fewer properties.

Buyers looking during off-peak seasons are typically more motivated. Their purchasing decisions are often driven by pressing factors such as job relocations, family changes, or lease expirations— factors that can’t wait until spring. These buyers are often prepared to act quickly and make competitive offers, making fall and winter ideal times for faster sales and easier negotiations.

Many potential sellers assume that waiting for lower mortgage rates will result in higher home prices, making it a more favorable time to sell. However, markets don’t always behave as expected. In 2023, when many predicted rates would fall

to around 5%, they instead increased—yet home prices still rose. Currently, sellers benefit from a market where demand exceeds supply, with prices near all-time highs. Given the market’s unpredictability, waiting may not necessarily lead to better conditions. If you’ve been thinking about selling, now could be the perfect time.

Historically, selling a home in fall or winter presented challenges due to bad weather, holidays, and vacations. However, advances in technology have reduced these barriers. With online listings, virtual tours, social media, and digital transactions, buyers can now view and purchase homes year-round. Well-presented homes, featuring strong photography and staging, are selling consistently, regardless of the season.

While spring has traditionally been considered the best time to sell, the fall should not be overlooked. With less competition, more motivated buyers, an unpredictable market, and the decreasing importance of seasonality, fall presents a great opportunity to list your home. Take advantage of the current conditions rather than waiting for spring—now could be the ideal time to sell.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Welcome to our inaugural Power Women issue! I could not be prouder of the collaborative effort of our team to put together such an impactful and powerful special section. It has been such a joy to see this vision become a reality and such a success. It was incredible to work with all of the nominated women from the initial contact to inside the studio for photography portraits. As you flip through the section, I am sure you will be inspired by these powerhouse women who are leading the way in their respective fields. I am honored to celebrate these women and all of their accomplishments.

Dynamic duo Shelby and Nathan Slager are receiving much acclaim for their short movie, Chasing June. Read about the couple’s journey from the suburbs of Illinois in Hollywood Dreams. Lauren Cole, a successful photographer in her own right, shares with us her favorite about town spots in Country vs. Town. And embarking on her second act, Liz Sincox is the proprietor of—and sole artist featured—at the Happy Painting Shop. Her career trajectory from real estate phenomenon to inspiring artist is traced in Works of Art. And developer Joe Elias delivers again with his latest development Sundance South Barrington. Read all about it in The Lay of the Land.

STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

What actress would play you in a movie? Reese Witherspoon. Although we look nothing alike, I love her fun, light-hearted side, and dig a little deeper and she is a business woman, bibliophile, and I love her as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. And while she seems easy to be around like me, don’t be fooled there’s “Whiskey in (her) Teacup,” or in my case tequila. Who from history would you want to travel with? John Lennon, to bring the music, Anthony Bourdain for his food and travel knowledge, and Marilyn Monroe for my gal pal on this epic trip. Where do you look for inspiration? My kids, they all inspire me in so many different ways. The warrior, the giver, and the athlete. They are all so different, their paths, personalities, mindsets, but they all make me want to be better, do more, see differently, and think differently. Favorite book? Atlas Shrugged. I read this in my 20s and was sucked into this dystopian science fiction world (so out of the norm for me). In fact, sharing this is inspiring me to reread this classic with new eyes as my view of the world as a 20 something is so different from today’s view. Most beloved cookbook? I have so many, yet the one on my shelf that is the most stained, dog-eared, and loved is The Silver Palate—one of my first cook books when I was dreaming of living in New York. It is written by two women who ran a takeout shop in NYC filled with all of these amazing delicious recipes. I devoured these recipes as I was learning to cook and still use some of them today especially “Our Favorite Vinaigrette.” Best dinner party hack? Marry a man who loves to cook and make fantastic party-themed signature cocktails!! This leaves me free time to do all the other things, and the team effort is fun. I also love cooking with my husband. What’s in your bag right now? Five different lip gloss options, two sunglass options, and ginger mints.

JILL LOVES

Gadget: My AirPods. They are life changing; I’ve never enjoyed folding laundry and cleaning more. Podcasts and audiobooks now make the mundane my “me time.” Scent: Le Labo Santal 33 Barrington spot: Nekter Juice Bar, I feel better just walking through the doors. I love the PB & J bowl with gluten free granola (especially when it is made by my daughter, Sienna, who works there). The owner, Loren, is always hosting something exciting and fun to create a community spirit. I love the whole healthy community vibe and seeing my daughter’s sweet face. Hostess gift to receive: Gluten free homemade desserts, a lot of thought and love goes into that. Gift to give: 21 Seeds Tequila—cucumber and jalapeno infused—a good friend turned me onto this and I am spreading the love.

Elevate Your Beauty Routine

Discover a Curated Selection of Premier Facials and Masks.

Our skin is truly remarkable, always protecting us from the elements and pollutants. Indulge in some much-deserved pampering for your skin with a luxurious at-home mask and a rejuvenating facial. Facials can repair past damage and strengthen your skin, ensuring it stays vibrant and healthy for longer. Not all facials are the same, so finding the right aesthetician who can customize your treatment to meet your skin’s unique needs is crucial. Top facials for skincare are:

HYDRAFACIAL

Picture your skin feeling incredibly smooth, radiant, and totally refreshed. The HydraFacial is hands down a go-to treatment for achieving this. It harnesses advanced technology to thoroughly clean, exfoliate, extract impurities, and infuse your skin with enriching serums, resulting in visibly brighter, smoother skin. And the best part? You’ll see immediate results, with your skin feeling clean, glowing, and totally revitalized. It’s a game changer.

CRYOFACIAL

The treatment involves applying super cold temperatures to the skin to help reduce inflammation, cytokine production, and boosts collagen production. It promises firmer, healthier, and more radiant skin. I had to experience it for myself, and post-treatment, my skin was practically beaming; I felt like a whole new person—completely revitalized and invigorated.

DIAMOND GLOW

I’ve been hearing great reviews from so many of my friends about the Diamond Glow facial. So, I made an appointment with my dermatologist to experience it. She described it as a magical skin resurfacing procedure that can truly rejuvenate and revitalize the skin, leaving it looking and feeling younger, smoother, and softer. I couldn’t wait to give it a try. The treatment involved using a diamond-tipped wand to exfoliate dead skin cells, deeply cleanse pores and nourish the skin with custom serums. And you know what? It was painless and easy. After the treatment, my skin felt incredibly clean and hydrated. It was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to plump their skin and combat dryness.

Life can get busy, so if you don’t have the time to visit your dermatologist or aesthetician to try the above treatments, consider these at-home products that might help achieve similar results.

Why

accreditation matters when choosing a cosmetic dentist.

Accreditation serves to set the standard for excellence in cosmetic dentistry. Achieving accredited status from the AACD requires dedication to continuing education, careful adherence to the protocol, and a resolve to produce exceptional dentistry. Over the past 35 years, thousands of dentists have attempted to complete the process but only 400 have been able to meet the standard. Of these 400, only 200 in the world still practice dentistry today.

The process begins with a written examination. If the candidate passes the written part, they can then start the clinical portion. This involves completing five different reconstructive procedures that are pre-determined by the association. Each case is photographed under high magnification and also requires a written report. Once the documentation is complete, the case is submitted for evaluation.

After the clinical portions are passed, a final oral examination is conducted along with a review of all the clinical photography and reporting. Only after passing all of these steps does the dentist receive his accredited status.

When you are ready to look for a new dentist, let AACD help and select the “Find a Dentist” tab. You will be asked to enter your location and you will be given a list of the dentists in your area. Keep in mind that less than 1 percent of the world’s dentists are accredited so you may have to travel to get to one. This first step will be a lot more reliable in getting the quality work that you need than asking a neighbor, going through online reviews or responding to a coupon.

Dr. James T. Gavrilos is accredited with AACD. His office is located at 129 Park Avenue in Barrington. For more information, call 847-3814040 or visit barringtondentist.com.

All in the Family

The physicians at Doctor Daughters provide a bridge to gap the lack of reliable communication in modern health care.

Today’s health care system certainly is not what it used to be. As physicians who have been in practice for nearly two decades, we have seen how much the medical system has changed just since we entered medical school. We have the privilege of receiving and delivering care in a nation robust with technological and innovative advances, research institutions, and access to renowned specialists. With that, however, comes many drawbacks that have altered the landscape of today’s health care system such as higher costs, administrative complexity, and uniform access to care.

Patients' standards have evolved too. Modern patients are more informed and have higher expectations from their health care experience. Despite improving digital literacy, they desire more personalized care just like the good old days when their doctor was able to spend time necessary to explain test results, describe next steps, and answer questions. This is the number one thing we hear from patients we meet in the hospital—that they just don’t have enough time with their doctors anymore. Unavoidable constraints felt by today’s physicians to meet administrative regulations and metrics just to keep their doors open, takes time away from patient interactions. This leads to miscommunication, frustration, distrust, and an overall fragmentation in a patient’s care.

Naturally, as physicians we became keenly familiar with these issues in our clinical work. Yet, as daughters, mothers, sisters, neighbors, and friends we would often find ourselves playing the role of the doctor in the family by helping our own to navigate through these same complexities. Even at home and away from the bedside we were personally witnessing the gaps in today’s health care system. We began to ask ourselves what we could do to change it for everyone, not just our own family. That is where Doctor Daughters was born.

We provide a unique and elevated physician consultation experience to people of all ages from the simplest to the most medically complex. We have helped clients organize all their medical history into a customized MedFolio™️, streamlining pertinent data into one easy-to-find place. This empowers clients with the ability to see, understand, and make sense of their medical care. It also allows a client to present all of their data to a new physician or specialist circumventing the insufficiency, redundancy, and unreliability of electronic health records. We offer personalized education regarding medications, medical conditions, and new diagnoses. We assist clients in preparation for doctor’s appointments so they know what questions to ask their doctor and help interpret the answers

they receive. Doctor Daughters is aware that physicians and specialists may not communicate effectively amongst each other during a hospitalization. We are available to collaborate with these physicians and translate their care plans back to you for better understanding of what is occurring. We do not replace your physician, but instead, are their ally and collaborator. Additionally, we offer the same services to college-aged clients and their families who are learning how to be smart health care consumers while away from home for the first time.

The physicians at Doctor Daughters believe an informed patient appreciates more satisfying outcomes. We understand the obstacles your physician faces that limit the amount of time they can spend with you. We are ever present to bridge the gaps that are inevitable in our modern health care system. We are not run-of-the-mill advocates or navigators. HOLLYWOOD DREAMS

With their first short film in the can, a suburban couple are chasing the Hollywood dream

Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. The entertainment industry is studded with couples who get creative together. Chicagoland’s Shelby and Nathan Slager aren’t dodging paparazzi just yet, but like these marquee names, they’re a team as they pursue success in show business. At the Beverly Hills Film Festival in May 2024, Shelby received the award for Best Actress for her performance in their short movie, Chasing June.

At fifteen minutes in length, Chasing June is what is known as a proof of concept project, a sample of what could, with investment, become a fully-fledged film. Tinged with magical realism, the piece looks at two friends who reunite three years after a tragedy. It’s a story sprung from experience; the death of Nathan’s brother and illness in Shelby’s family. “This may sound pretentious,” observes Nathan, “but I think that art should always reveal something about your inner life that makes the audience feel more human. The two experiences that brought Shelby and me to write Chasing June, the tragic loss of my brother at a young age and Shelby’s family member’s cancer journey, felt personal and also universal.”

Raised in the western suburbs—Nathan is originally from St. Charles, Shelby was raised in Elgin—the two attended North Central College in Naperville. He studied English literature and she studied theater. After graduating, they lived in Chicago for a few years before relocating to Los Angeles in 2023. Like many young people, they held a variety of jobs in the city as they tried to get their footing in the grown-up world. She had her sights set on an acting career; Nathan was less certain about what he wanted to do. “I thought about going to law school, medical school, I enrolled in an alternative licensure program to be a high school English teacher,” he shares. “In the back of my mind, though, I always dreamed of being a writer, a novelist. But Shelby always pushed me to go into film. She’s an incredibly intuitive and empathetic person and I think she just had a feeling that that would be what I am happiest doing.”

Nathan and Shelby wrote the script for Chasing June, and she co-directed the movie with Alana Areyzaga, a filmmaker and makeup pro from Wheaton who studied cinema at Columbia College. In drawing from their own lives for their first film effort, Nathan and Shelby didn’t make things easy for themselves. “As a writer, it was a

mixture of the incredibly difficult and the cathartic,” relates Nathan, who was 6 when he witnessed the accident that took his brother’s life. “It forced me to closely examine my feelings about a very hard time in my life and put it on paper—and then on camera—for everyone to see. I felt vulnerable and that wasn’t easy.” As for portraying the title character in the film, Shelby remarks, “There were certainly moments that hit harder than others. My family member whose cancer we used as the inspiration for June was on set. In fact, I wore one of her headscarves throughout the film, and every single time I put it on I was overwhelmed with the emotion of it all. The fact that she was willing to be there and help us shape the story in an authentic and truthful way was one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

The learning curve for these newbie filmmakers was steep. “This project was definitely a baptism by fire,” admits Shelby. “We were very lucky that I had made some good connections through the projects I’d acted in, and we reached out to a lot of those contacts, as well as other friends we have that are involved in the industry, for feedback and guidance throughout the process.” That process continues. The couple are currently looking for investors to bring the film to feature length, which will allow them, says Nathan, “to delve deeper and explore themes of repressed grief, the relationship between young adults and their parents, and hereditary cancer.” They are also at work on another short film, becalming, about a young couple, Wes and Cleo, looking to expand their family when Cleo receives an unexpected diagnosis. “It’s meant to raise awareness around inflammatory breast cancer and show that cancer is not all about hospitals and doctors’ appointments, but about the love that surrounds you,” says Nathan.

In the meanwhile, the couple aren’t giving up their day jobs. Nathan works as a server in a high-end steakhouse. Shelby, who snagged a role in short film entitled Spin the Bottle, babysits and dog walks. Says Nathan, “We are constantly juggling the many tasks that come with being filmmakers, alongside our day-to-day responsibilities, but we love the film industry and wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Serendipity

With all of the stars in perfect alignment, pastry chef Jennifer Duke is making Lake Zurich a little bit sweeter with Après Pastry & Bakery.

“How this whole thing came about is pretty serendipitous,” says Jennifer Duke, owner and head pastry chef of French-inspired Après Pastry & Bakery. “It’s really like this was all meant to be.”

This might seem like a bold statement coming from Duke, but when you hear her tell the story of all the things that fell into place for her to open its doors, you’re going to believe her.

Duke and her husband, Jeff, were high school sweethearts and had talked for years about one day opening their own business. Would it be a gym? A coffee shop? Maybe something with cars? The couple wasn’t sure. But they knew that when the timing was right, the answer would be clear.

In 2018, the couple took a life-changing trip to Japan. “This was really special for me because I’m a quarter Japanese,” she says. “One day, we went into this pastry shop that was literally the size of a closet, but they had the most beautiful pastries. The feeling I got when we went in there was that this is something I could do. I could make pastries. This was such an aha moment for me. That sounds cheesy, but it really was.”

When Duke returned from Japan, she started googling pastry programs in Chicago. “I decided that the shortest program was going to be the best program for me. I found this school called The French Pastry School in

Après Pastry & Bakery, designed by Siren Betty Design

Chicago and it had a program that was just a few months long. As my luck would have it, this is one of the best pastry schools in the country.”

With her husband’s blessing, after 10 years in the corporate world, Duke enrolled at the Pastry School. “It was a very intense full-time program, but I loved it. I was like ‘this is it.’ When I finished the program, I interned at the school. The internship really helped me solidify that I was on the right path.”

Duke left the Pastry School knowing she wanted to own her own bakery. She just needed to figure out what the best way was for her to get the experience to do this. When she asked the chefs from school, they told her she needed to go to France.

“Of course that’s what they told me to do,” she says with a laugh. “But they were certain it would help me refine my technique, better understand what it’s like to work in a large kitchen, and more. The chefs from school kindly introduced me to their colleagues in France. So, I booked my ticket for Paris.”

That was January 2020. Duke was able to get a few months in before the pandemic forced her to return home. When the world began to open up, Duke found herself gaining baking experience wherever she could. She worked at Boka in Chicago, then at Hewn with a new baby in tow, and finally at Ambrosia Euro-American Patisserie in Barrington—a beloved community establishment for more than 30 years.

“One day, I went to Lake Zurich Florist to buy some edible flowers for some pastries I was making for a girls’ weekend,” Duke says. “While I was there, I met the woman who owned the building. She knew that I made pastries and asked me what I was doing. She then said that she and her husband were looking for someone to open a

“It’s so much fun to see people enjoying what we’re sharing.”

bakery in the space next door to the florist. When I went home and told my husband that I thought the universe was telling us it was time to open our bakery, he couldn’t believe it. But then when he thought about how every step in me pursuing this dream of being a pastry chef had worked out just this way, he was immediately on board.”

Within just a few months of this fateful conversation, Après Pastry & Bakery opened its doors, an inviting, light-filled café. “I love

this space so much,” Duke says. “It’s calm and lovely. Siren Betty Design helped bring our vision to life. I didn’t want our bakery to be overly French. Siren Betty got it just right and hit it out of the park. This is such a unique space.”

Developing the menu was a little trickier. “I knew that I wanted to do some breakfast things like croissants and scones. But I also wanted to highlight some French desserts people aren’t as familiar with, like dacquoise cakes that are nut and meringue-based. We had someone in the store last week who was telling her friend how she had to have one! It’s so much fun to see people enjoying what we’re sharing.”

Duke is also planning to introduce more Japanese items, since her trip to Japan was so instrumental in her opening the bakery. “Right now, we offer a yuzu cream tart,” she says. “I would like to do some matcha things, some black sesame things, some red bean things. I also want to do a shokupan, which is a milk bread loaf that is great for toasts and sandwiches. But again, we need to gradually introduce these things.”

Après Pastry & Bakery is proud to be partnering with Heady Cup Coffee Roasters from McHenry. She is thrilled with their product and the training they provided to Duke’s staff on making espresso drinks.

Duke still has a hard time believing that her dream of owning her own bakery has come true. She hopes that in the near future, she’ll be making wedding cakes and catering sweet tables. She would also like to rent out her retail space for parties and showers in their off hours.

When asked where the name for the bakery came from, Duke recalls it as another one of those aha moments.

“I knew I wanted a French word. I was driving home from work one day and the word ‘après’ came to mind. It has so many meanings. For me personally, I’m opening this bakery ‘after’ I had a whole other career. And then from a more customer-based focus: after you wake up in the morning, come and get a pastry. Or after a meal, come for something sweet.”

The Layof the Land

Developer Joe Elias partners with Mother Nature to create homes that sit sensibly in the landscape.

WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUNVIJAY PAUL / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

Suburbs come in all stripes. Some began as wide open weekend getaways and became denser as commuter railways were extended out from the city. Others grew up around tiny towns or farming communities. The modern suburb, with its acres of often nearly identical homes, emerged in the post-war years, driven by a lack of housing and the arrival of the interstate highway system. While massive developments with houses sitting cheek-by-jowl on small, treeless lots remain the norm, Barrington-based Vintage Luxury Homes specializes in a more tailored concept in which the landscape is as much an amenity as state-of-the-art kitchens and integrated technology.

Owner Joe Elias grew up in South Barrington and it is here that Vintage Luxury Homes has made its mark with high-end developments—Hidden Lakes, Enclave, and most recently, Sundance. Drawing from historic styles, Elias offers homes that combine a sense of architectural substance with great livability.

“We start from scratch with each home we design.”

“What really separates us from typical builders is that we don’t have a set portfolio of available homes to select from with limited customization,” says Elias. “We start from scratch with each home we design. We never reproduce a home. We combine custom floor plans and living areas with exterior elevations that complement our client’s lifestyle and the surrounding landscape. Vintage homes are designed for the homesite on which they’re built. We thoughtfully consider the natural topography and how to take advantage of views

and sunrises and sunsets.”

Elias has long had an entrepreneurial spirit. He launched a sealcoating business while still a student at Barrington High School and began designing homes in 1991. Along the way, he also created custom furniture, produced sculpture, and developed a line of women’s handbags and men’s briefcases. “Design and art are truly my passions,” he says. “I love to create and build exquisite things in all realms.”

Set on a former equestrian property, Sundance comprises 75 acres of gently undulating terrain graced with mature trees. “The natural beauty of the land is so incredible that I didn’t want to disturb or alter it,” shares Elias. “I simply wanted to complement it. I designed the roadway to go around the trees, and I positioned lot lines to follow the natural topography. We preserved the rolling hills, with over 37 feet of elevation changes across the property, and we added a dozen small ponds and water features.” In addition to its natural appeal, Sundance offers homeowners resort-style living with a host of features, including a clubhouse, fitness center, yoga studio, kid’s pool, relaxation pool with cabanas, croquet lawn, and pickleball and bocce courts.

Lots at Sundance range from two-thirds to three-quarter acre,

and home prices start at $2.5 million. After selecting a homesite, buyers fill out a questionnaire that allows the Vintage team to understand their programmatic needs and stylistic preferences, from which Elias and his team produce drawings and sketches for the client’s review. Sourcing the finest materials and finishes, Vintage Luxury Homes is equipped to create any space, from wine cellars and butler pantries, to golf simulator rooms and indoor basketball courts. Quality and convenience are central to life at Sundance. Indoors, smart home systems from Creston and Lutron streamline everyday living. Sundance offers maintenance-free living which includes lawn maintenance, shrub trimming, weed control, turf fertilizer applications, and snow removal.

No matter how extensive or elaborate a home buyer’s wish list may be, Elias approaches every project with a deep, fundamental appreciation for what four walls and a roof are really all about. “I design all Vintage homes with a family first approach. Thoughtfully considering the way a family interacts and spends time together is a meaningful way to create homes that are easily filled with love, lifetime milestones, and lasting family memories.”

WORKS OF ART

Happy Painting Shop owner basks in creativity from her Barrington studio.

The artist

Liz Sincox loved selling real estate.

“I did it for more than 26 years,” Sincox says. “I worked on the No. 1 team in Barrington. It was a lot of pressure and a lot of work. You don’t get a day off with real estate. But it was also fulfilling and so much fun.”

But in 2019, she decided to step away from the fast-paced industry.

“My husband was a fire captain in Glenview, and he decided to retire,” she remembers. “And then he asked me if I wanted to retire too. And I did it.”

Not surprisingly though, Sincox soon found herself craving something that would ultimately fill her time during retirement. And soon, memories of her past began to remind her of her love for painting.

“My mom used to sit at the kitchen table and paint to escape the chaos of all of us kids, but she never sold anything,” remembers Sincox, who was one of eleven children growing up in Oak Park/River Forest. “She would give her paintings away as housewarming gifts or hang them in our house. Just thinking about those times made me want to try painting.”

At first, Sincox says she assumed she would not be able to begin to put brush to paper before getting properly trained. “I felt like I had to take art classes and painting classes and I would really have to study it,” she remembers. “But then, my husband said to me, ‘I’m going to go to Michaels Arts & Crafts right now, and I’m going to buy you all the stuff and you’re going to start painting today.’ Isn’t that crazy?”

That crazy idea has now evolved into Sincox sharing and selling her original pieces of art on various social media channels under her company name, Happy Painting Shop.

“Painting literally poured out of me once I started,” Sincox says. “I love doing it, and it makes me so happy, hence the name Happy Painting Shop.”

Today, the works of Sincox are featured in shops such as The English Daisy and Amazing Gracie’s in Barrington, Inner Haven in Grayslake, Fontana Home in Fontana, Wisconsin and her own storefronts on both Etsy and TikTok Shop. Since the company’s inception in 2019, Sincox has sold over 500 pieces of work for an adoring fanbase.

“My goal was to be accepted in the art community,” she remembers. “I not only want to be known as an artist, I also feel people should have original art in their house. I don’t do prints. Everything anyone buys is an original piece of art that I painted.”

However, while Sincox admits that she may have always had an innate talent for painting, she has had to put much time into to perfecting it. And even so, it’s still a work in progress.

“It takes practice, practice, practice,” she says. “You start learning different techniques and you start picking up different techniques.”

Sincox says painting has also done wonders for her mental game.

“It is so freeing and peaceful,” says Sincox, who relies on thrift shops for many of the frames she uses for her works of art. “I only use acrylic paints, and I love them because if I make a mistake, which I do often, I look for it to dry and I paint over it and the mistake is gone and I move on.”

The love for the Happy Painting Shop has recently driven Sincox to teach her techniques to a wide range of hopeful artists who too would like to find a creative release via the art of painting.

“I call them painting parties,” she says of the two-hour creative get-togethers. “Everyone paints something different. I teach them my technique, and everyone leaves the party with a matted and framed masterpiece that they created.”

And most of her attendees have never even picked up a paintbrush.

“It is helping other people find their creative juices,” Sincox says of the classes. “Everyone leaves the party rather emotional, saying, ‘I cannot believe I painted this.’ That’s been really fun.”

And while the sheer popularity of the Happy Painting Shop could have Sincox dreaming of expanding, she says she is quite content with all that she has. “My husband always says we should stop working for a living and start working on living, and I am doing just that,” she says. “The second it stops being fun, I will shut it down. I want this to be relaxing.”

In front of her works of art, Sincox wearing AS by DF pink dress, neimanmarcus.com.

She also wants to make sure that this time around, her job gives her ample time to spend with family.

“Once my granddaughter walks in the door, I close the studio up and walk into the family room, and I just play with her,” Sincox reflects. “Life is short. If you want to paint, paint. Do you want to write, act, sing? Just do it. Don’t ever be afraid of making a mistake.”

JOYFUL CREATOR

ALI LEE is all about turning lawns into celebrations with Card My Yard of Barrington. With her keen eye for detail and background in art and interior design, she transforms ordinary lawns into extraordinary ones with personalized, joy-filled greetings that celebrate life’s special moments. As a mom of four, Lee knows how important it is to spread a little happiness, and she’s committed to making every yard as unique and memorable as the occasion itself.

Most rewarding part of what you do? I get to bring joy and happiness to others by helping them celebrate their special days in a big way. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or any occasion, being part of their celebration and seeing the smiles on their faces is the most rewarding part of what I do. There’s nothing better than adding a little extra joy to someone’s day.

How do you inspire others? Social media is such a game-changer, and I love using it to send encouragement to other women—especially when they least expect it. Letting someone know they’re rocking it and that their hard work isn’t going unnoticed makes me feel good. As a business owner, I’ve learned to value those moments when other women cheer me on. I’m all about being a cheerleader to others. Use your good energy and build each other up! There’s enough room on top for us all.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting off? I like to believe we are the authors of our own stories. Anything new can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. You never know what amazing things could happen if you are not willing to step out of your comfort zone. Write something extraordinary, not ordinary. Take risks, listen to your heart, and go with it. If it’s meant to be, it will be.

Definition of success? Success is achieving or surpassing your goals—personal and professional—while staying true to your values. It’s about reaching new heights without sacrificing integrity, aligning every victory with your ambitions and character.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The greatest risk I’ve taken professionally was leaving a comfortable salary job with my family to launch my bridal store. Despite having no prior experience in the bridal industry, I ventured into the unknown with a passion for fashion and some business experience. The rest was all hope and faith.

Traits you think great leaders possess? Great leaders embody understanding, empathy, and integrity. My father taught me to treat employees with respect and as equals, a principle that has shaped my leadership approach. These traits build genuine connections and inspire trust, creating an environment where everyone thrives.

Powerful woman you admire the most? A powerful woman I admire is Lisa Vanderpump. She’s a powerhouse—excelling as a successful business owner, exceptional leader, devoted wife, and amazing mother, all while looking incredible. Her ability to thrive in every facet of her life is truly inspiring.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? Daily prayer, walks, or doing something active, preferably outdoors, is crucial. Self-care is incredibly important for success to avoid burnout.

MEDIA MARVEL K

ATHRYN JANICEK is a powerhouse in media, communications, and executive presence. With three Emmy Awards and a decade of steering Janicek Performance Group, Janicek revolutionizes the training of Fortune 500 leaders, medical associations, biotech firms, politicians, and more. Her firm’s holistic approach fosters exceptional personal and professional growth, turning clients into confident leaders. Recently relocating to Barrington, her journey comes full circle as she roots her family in the community her mother once called home.

Most rewarding part of what you do? The single most rewarding thing we do is help people succeed at levels they never thought they would. They have dreams and goals, and we help them reach those. Everyone who comes to us is smart, but there are blind spots we help find and then tweak. Our training, coaching, and “tweaking” help them build the confidence to stop holding themselves back. We help them reach their goals and get success a lot faster. There is nothing in the world I would rather do than help people succeed in life professionally and personally.

Definition of success? My definition of success evolves daily. Fifteen years ago, it was being a TV news director. Later, it was reaching $100,000 for our company, then $1 million. Now, it’s striving for $5 million. The goalpost keeps moving. During my IVF journey, success was a healthy baby, which we achieved after five rounds. At 48, success now means working fewer hours, having our coaches handle more client work, and spending more time with my family while scaling the company. Creating jobs and family time is my success today.

Traits you think great leaders possess? Great leaders possess tenacity, honesty, integrity, and the ability to admit when they need help.

TRAILBLAZING TRIO

What happens when three women come together with one vision to revolutionize health care? Meet the dream team behind Doctor Daughters, an innovative medical consulting business co-founded by DR. KRISTEN MAGUIRE, DR. MELISSA DRAKE, and DR. ANN MARIE HOUSER. “Despite all the joys and rewards bedside medicine brings, we identified fractures and holes in how patients navigate the health care system,” says Dr. Maguire, who earned her M.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed ER training at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Patients are often lost, have trouble understanding what to do next or why medications or treatments are even prescribed. The days where your doctor has time to sit down and explain to you what is going on seem to be gone as a result of the modern American health care system. We wanted to provide a service where we bring that personal attention back to the patients, empowering them.” Dr. Drake, whose passion lies in diagnosing and treating complex diseases in times of stress while educating patients and their family members, says Doctor Daughters was founded on a vision for a team approach to health care. “It’s very rewarding to witness the empowerment of a patient when they are educated on their health, their medical conditions, and how it results in a healthier, better quality of life,” explains Dr. Drake, who earned her D.O. from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed an ER residency through Michigan State University. Dr. Houser, who earned a D.O. from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, says she and her fellow founders share a creative, collective mission. “We can and will improve people's experience with health care,” she explains. “People need to feel heard and desire true understanding of their situations and we are skilled at meeting this need.”

Most rewarding part of what you do?

Dr. Drake: Seeing relief in a patient during a stressful diagnosis—relief that they understand what is going on, there is a plan and that they are not alone.

Dr. Houser: That look of relief is unmistakable. The eyes glisten, the jaw softens, the shoulders relax, the breath comes easier. It's the same look with students, patients, and families—the look that reminds me we made a difference. Dr. Maguire: I love helping all people at all stages of their lives. I help any age from two minutes old to 107 years old. I help people from all backgrounds and socioeconomic backgrounds. I don’t want to meet you in the ER but if I do, it’s hopefully because I have helped you or your family on what could be the worst day of your lives.

How should women support other women?

Dr. Drake: Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, “Women should be in every room decisions are made.” I couldn't agree more! Women have the unique perspective of innate caregiving and the gift of women’s intuition. It’s real and I see it in our practice daily.

Dr. Houser: Women and their journeys are more alike than not. Topics and timelines might be different, but the themes are often the same. Sharing the lessons we've learned from experiences, especially the painful ones, makes another's journey easier.

Dr. Maguire: I believe there is room for everyone at the top. We all experience the same obstacles getting there. Why not help one another achieve our goals? We’re much better together anyway.

CREATIVE DYNAMO

MICHELLE GILBERT has launched an exciting venture with Pure Living Vacation Homes, crafting unforgettable experiences for vacationers through short-term rentals. Beyond this, she serves as a village trustee for Trout Valley, creates impactful Super Bowl commercials as a creative director at an advertising agency, and contributes actively to her children’s school board. Her enthusiasm and drive make her a force in hospitality, community service, and family life, bringing vibrant energy to all she does.

Most rewarding part of what you do? Taking a tiny zygote of an idea from my brain, working for months to develop it, and then seeing it come to life—like a Super Bowl commercial, a massive social media campaign, or transforming a home into a magical experience—has been a highlight and brought me creative satisfaction that is truly incomparable.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? For anyone starting out, remember you don’t need a home run on your first try—just get started. Educate yourself, find a mentor even if you need to pay for one, and learn from others’ mistakes. Trust your instincts and take action. You’ll have some trips and slips, as everyone does, but you’ll learn, grow stronger, and improve with each experience.

Traits you think great leaders possess? Discipline is key to life—it’s about pushing forward even when motivation fades. My husband and I constantly work on our self-discipline, motivating each other to keep learning and growing.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? With all my commitments, it felt like drinking from a firehose every day—my to-do list was two pages long! Following Mel Robbins’ advice, I restructured my day into five focused “zones” for quiet time, kids, work, family, and evening wind-downs. SMILE SAVANT

Born in Krakow, Poland, AGNIESZKA IWASZCZYSZYN, DMD, moved to the United States at the young age of eight, bringing her rich heritage with her. Fluent in Polish, she earned her doctorate in dentistry from the University of Illinois. In 2018, she launched Hart Dental, quickly expanding from two to seven operatories by 2023. Her expertise includes Bioclear, dental implants, surgery, orthodontics, sleep apnea treatment, and Botox/Xeomin. Next up? Myofunctional therapy for young patients.

How do you inspire others? People are inspired by my honesty. Whether at work or at home, I’m clear about my expectations and the path I envision. I’ve also been a source of inspiration through my courage, which is strengthened by incredible support. My amazing mother—who works with me as a dentist—my supportive husband, and my friends, all give me the push I need. My staff and associates are equally amazing. I couldn’t do what I do without them.

Traits you think great leaders possess? Good leaders do what others are too afraid to do. They are not afraid of their ideas being unpopular and they have a passion that people are able to easily follow. Great leaders involve others in their ideas and bounce ideas off each other to create that greatness.

Powerful woman you admire the most? The most powerful woman I admire is my mom. At the same age I was when I opened my practice, she moved to the United States with my dad and me, temporarily giving up her dental career. She sacrificed a lot, and it took years for her to feel comfortable and find her way here. I can’t imagine making such a transition at her age. Watching her transform from timid to powerful has been incredibly inspiring.

LUXURY REAL ESTATE EXPERT

CONNIE ANTONIOU was born to Greek-American parents with deep roots in the motion picture business. As a result, she was exposed to unique work and life experiences, including dining with such Hollywood icons as Sylvester Stallone and Donald O’Connor. Antoniou took her first job at age 11, popping popcorn for 50 cents an hour in her family’s movie theaters, a role that fostered a hard work ethic and a commitment to exceptional customer service. Today, this global real estate advisor and former broker-owner of two Sotheby’s International Realty offices has established herself as a trusted authority in luxury real estate—serving buyers and sellers throughout the suburban Chicago area and southeast Wisconsin. She got her start in the highly competitive Hinsdale market before achieving impressive milestones as the senior vice president of sales in Barrington with Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty. Her proven understanding of what high-profile buyers are looking for in luxury properties has allowed her to foster meaningful, long-term relationships with an elite clientele. She has represented Chicago Blackhawks players and coaches, and renowned entrepreneurs and executives, among many others throughout her impressive career.

Most rewarding part of what you do? By taking the time to understand my clients’ individual needs and preferences, I can tailor my approach to help them find the luxury home of their dreams. Whether it’s a sprawling estate nestled on the lush fairways of Wynstone, or an elegant residence overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Zurich, I navigate the exclusive communities of Barrington and beyond. I find that all very rewarding.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? Always do the right thing for the client—not what is right for your pocket—and the rest will come. I’ve always believed that, and it has served me well.

CHARTING NEW HORIZONS

MICHELLE STREIT, an OWL recipient for Barrington Commerce, is revolutionizing water recreation. As co-founder of Barrington Boat Club, she makes luxury boating joyfully accessible on Fox River and nearby lakes, offering brand-new boat rentals with bespoke services. Expanding her vision, Streit now provides retro boat rentals, watersports equipment, and a beach bar in McHenry and her latest projects include entertainment at Fox River Grove marina and a 1920s-themed wine and whiskey bar in Cary, blending vintage charm with modern fun.

Most rewarding part of what you do? Knowing that we offer our members an amazing summer on the water so close to home that also benefits their social and emotional well-being is by far the most rewarding part of this business. They can unplug and reconnect with family and friends while immersed in Mother Nature. Psychologists say being on the water can make us feel calmer, increase well-being, and boost creativity—it’s called “The Blue State of Mind.”

How should women support other women? Women should be each other’s biggest fans. Supporting each other creates a network of empowerment where women can share experiences, insights, and advice. This solidarity helps build confidence and resilience in navigating challenges unique to women in business. We are always better together, regardless of our industry, and we have so much to learn from one another. I am incredibly grateful for the various groups of women in my life and their continued support.

Definition of success? To me, the definition of success is the combination of personal fulfillment, financial achievements, impact on others, and the ability to balance work and life effectively. I am proud to have built a business that pursues my passion while supporting my family and bringing joy to so many local residents through boating and entertainment.

TAX TRAILBLAZER

ALIYAH KIZILBASH, CEO and founder of TaxBack, has been redefining the property tax landscape since 2018. Balancing the joys of raising three children, she revolutionizes tax appeals through TaxBack’s cutting-edge solutions. Her B2B product empowers property owners and businesses to navigate the complex world of tax appeals with ease, saving valuable time and money. Kizilbash is not just advancing the property tax field; she’s reshaping it with each strategic move.

How should women support other women? Knowing that there are people you can be vulnerable with is crucial. People can’t help you if you don’t share what’s wrong. Even the most successful women I know, still experience imposter syndrome. We live in a society that often portrays perfect lives, leading us to believe we need to be perfect too. When we realize we don’t have to be perfect, we can grow authentically and support each other in the ways we truly need.

How do you inspire others? By sharing my own story, I aim to inspire others to believe that it’s never too late to pursue their dreams. Starting my company at 37, after years as a stay-at-home mom, I broke into the corporate world, demonstrating that age and experience shouldn’t limit anyone. Whether your path is conventional or not, I strive to empower others by reminding them that they can still achieve their dreams if they believe in themselves.

Traits you think great leaders possess? A great leader works for the people who work for them. It’s their responsibility to provide their team with what they need and cultivate a work environment where everyone can thrive.

QUEEN BEE

ALINA SUTTON moved to the United States at 20, spending 17 years in skin care before discovering her passion for flowers and herbs. What began as a small garden in her Chicago home inspired her family’s move to Barrington in 2021 to start Luna Bee Lavender Farm—turning a dream of lavender fields into reality, deepening their connection to nature. By 2022, Sutton added six beehives, transitioning her from business development manager to gardener and beekeeper.

Most rewarding part of what you do? There’s something empowering about being able to wear a business suit during the week and then a beekeeper suit and gardening gloves on the weekends. As the Midwest regional manager for a cosmeceutical line, I have the opportunity to teach, inspire, and support thousands of licensed estheticians to follow their dreams and become successful business owners in their industry, Then, on weekends, I immerse myself in tending to my lavender garden and beehives, finding connection with nature. For me, it’s the perfect balance.

How should women support other women? Women should uplift one another, recognizing that by helping someone else succeed, they ultimately elevate themselves.

Definition of success? Success means different things to different people, but it’s not the key to happiness. Rather, happiness is the key to success. When you love what you’re doing, success will naturally follow.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? Don’t give up when things get tough. When things get tough, it means you’re getting closer to something big. Embrace the challenges—they’re part of the journey to your goals. Every hurdle is a step closer to something amazing.

What did you dream of doing when you were younger? I’ve always admired my grandfather’s gardening in Romania. Moving to the city in the United States felt worlds apart, but now I’m following in his footsteps and living my dream.

DYNAMIC DYNAMO

MALLORY VASQUEZ is a dynamic force in Barrington, balancing her roles as a wife, mother, publicist, coach, and youth-centered philanthropist. Working in corporate public relations, she leverages her expertise to drive community impact while nurturing a vibrant family life. An alumna of the University of Iowa, Vasquez volunteers with Make-A-Wish Illinois and participates in the Walk For Wishes. In 2023, she co-chaired Safety Town with the Barrington Junior Women’s Club.

How do you inspire others? I create an environment in which others are comfortable being themselves. Being honest, open, and imperfect allows others to be the same. I only know how to be authentically myself, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Definition of success? Success is having happy, healthy, successful kids. That’s the product of a strong relationship with one’s partner, faith, community, and oneself. Parenting can be the ultimate challenge, but such a blessing and privilege.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? Establishing boundaries is crucial for me. Early in my career, I worked long hours for demanding clients but realized I could be more valuable by focusing on my family and other passions. Although I am busy with plans, coaching my daughter’s cheer teams, and volunteering, these activities help me set clear boundaries and ensure I maintain a healthy worklife balance.

Powerful woman you admire the most? All the moms in my life but mostly my own. I love this quote by Neha Ruch who said, “Anyone who just managed a morning routine to get kids to school or elsewhere, your time management, organization, negotiation, prioritization, communication and empathy are expanding in real-time—don’t let anyone say motherhood is anything besides the ultimate leadership training ground.” Also, any mom who’s started a business, you’re the real MVP!

LIVING LUXE

JUDY GIBBONS, of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty leverages her deep Barrington roots and 20 years of real estate expertise to help others find their dream homes. After a successful 13-year stint launching a fashion company in New York, she armed herself with real estate licenses in Illinois, Michigan, and Florida to help clients achieve their real estate goals. Gibbons is honored to have recently been selected as a host of Emmy-nominated show, American Dream TV.

How should women support other women? I surround myself with strong, smart, and savvy women business owners because I believe in the power of community and collaboration. I love the idea of straightening each other’s crowns and cheering each other on as we celebrate our successes and support each other through challenges. Through this, we create a network of empowerment and inspiration, pushing each other to reach new heights. That kind of support is invaluable.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? Starting my career in real estate was a significant leap outside my comfort zone. It was a challenging time, made even more daunting when the market crashed shortly after I began. Despite the uncertainty and obstacles, I persevered, driven by a passion for the industry and a determination to succeed. Looking back, I’m incredibly thankful I stayed the course, as those early struggles ultimately shaped me into the resilient and experienced professional I am today. Helping people achieve their real estate goals is my passion.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? It won’t be easy but it’s going to be worth it! Challenges and obstacles are inevitable, but they pave the way for growth and success. Embracing the difficulties makes achievements more rewarding, turning every struggle into a steppingstone toward success.

FAMILY CENTERED APPROACH S

HANA VITEK is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in the country. For more than 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law—handling a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile, and high-net-worth clients. Her ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a few attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. “Every family is different, so each case that I handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “All initial consultations include information about the alternatives to litigation and keeping the divorce process out of court.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney who serves as Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community,” she says. “Given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters.”

Most rewarding part of what you do? Helping people through a very difficult time and watching them get to a more positive place in their lives.

How should women support other women? By forming relationships with each other, both at the peer level and through mentorship. Women have unique career challenges, so it is extremely valuable to connect with other women in similar professional and personal situations.

THE PROTECTOR

MARY ANNE EHLERT, founder of Protected Tomorrows, is a passionate advocate for families with disabilities and the elderly, specializing in future planning and financial strategies. Recently, she partnered with a major financial distribution company taking Protected Tomorrows to the global stage. With a rich history of board roles, including at Special Olympics Illinois and the National Disability Institute, Ehlert actively contributes to educational and charitable initiatives, making a significant impact on the lives she touches.

Most rewarding part of what you do? For most parents of children with disabilities, their time and resources are spent on the here and now and they don’t know where to turn to for their unique financial planning requirements. The most rewarding part of what I do is when a family finds peace of mind knowing their family member with a disability is and will be happy and safe.

Definition of success? Success means different things to different people. For some, it’s about financial gain, but for me, it’s about expanding our reach to help more families, regardless of their financial situation. It’s also about building a team of passionate professionals whose dedication is reflected in our high-quality work. We are a true family, dedicated to helping other families, and that is what defines our success.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The greatest risk I took was leaving the corporate world to pursue what I felt was my life’s purpose. Inspired by my parents’ experience caring for my sister with cerebral palsy, I felt a strong mission to assist others in similar situations. It was daunting at times, but each time we helped a family, it reinforced our belief that we were on the right path and that we would succeed.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? It’s funny how life works. What once seemed like risks are now just everyday parts of our work. Her deep knowledge of gift and estate tax laws allows her to create customized estate plans and protective trusts that shield inheritances from threats. Committed to securing families’ futures, Lenore provides comprehensive strategies that ensure lasting protection and peace of mind for clients, including those with minor children and special needs.

How should women support other women? Women should support other women by sharing knowledge, information, and experiences to help each other succeed in their pursuits. Be a resource for other women by practicing nonjudgmental, proactive listening, offering ideas and suggestions, and actively helping them make meaningful connections.

How do you inspire others? I hope to inspire others by demonstrating we can have very difficult conversations about complicated and often uncomfortable issues with respect and work together to develop proactive solutions and strategies.

Powerful woman you admire the most? I admire any woman who uses her position to help others achieve their goals. One inspiring figure I truly admire is Allison Robinson, who founded The Mom Project. Her mission to help women remain active in the workforce and support women at every stage of their career journey is truly commendable.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? I focus on the positive aspects of my life, staying mindful and grateful for my family’s health and happiness. As a mother of two, an attorney, and a business owner, I apply the E + R = O (Event + Reaction = Outcome) mindset daily. I believe that while we can’t control events, we can control our reactions, which in turn shape the outcomes. Whether positive or negative, the result is determined by how we respond, not just by the event itself.

CHAMPION OF

CHANGE

According to personal coach and LCPC JENNY STEVENS, change is her middle name. “Having personally gone through my own share of difficult life changes— including attending nine schools in 12 years while having (just a few) learning disabilities, changing careers in my 20s, divorce, the loss of a parent at a young age, and surviving cancer—I have gained tremendous insight into how change affects your life and how to keep moving forward,” she says. “My calling is to help people fully realize and design a life they love, despite life’s many challenges.” Her solution is to stop what you’re doing (or not doing) and take what isn’t working out of the bag. “Repack it and get on the road towards the life you want,” adds Stevens. As a professional clinical counselor, and now personal and professional coach, she brings an honest, approachable, “no BS style” to her interactions with clients. “I care deeply about helping others and supporting my clients to make change or to adapt to change when they don’t feel they have the road map to make it happen,” she says.

Most rewarding part of what you do? Supporting people going through a major change, helping them face the fear within the change, and then creating a plan and providing the support they need to make that change positively.

How should women support other women?

There is enough room at the table for all of us. Be supportive of other successful women and surround yourself with them.

IN THE ZONE

As an attorney with Quarles & Brady LLP, KATE DUNCAN brings 21 years of in-depth experience in zoning and land use issues to help clients obtain approvals on everything from planned developments and zoning amendments to special uses and variations. Five years ago, Duncan was elected as a Village of Barrington Trustee, where in addition to this expertise, she also taps into her trusted working relationships with government officials and staff to make a difference in her community. “I have been a volunteer all of my life and I feel like my professional life and my personal life collided and this has allowed me to give my best in both of my roles,” adds Duncan.

Most rewarding part of what you do? I love being a zoning and land use lawyer. In development, zoning is step number one. Without proper zoning, development cannot proceed. I love representing my clients and trying to determine the path forward for a municipality or a county to support and approve their projects. I also love being a Village Trustee as I am able to use my professional knowledge of the development process as a volunteer for my community.

How should women support other women?

Too often, I am still the only woman in a room full of men and every time this happens, I am still surprised. I am on the executive board of an organization called CREW Chicago, which is focused on Commercial Real Estate Women supporting each other and helping each other advance. I think it is paramount to bring other women up with me as I advance. This is not meant to be to the detriment of men, but rather, just to help make sure that I don’t continue to end up the only woman in the room.

PREMIER PERFECTION M

ELANIE PARSONS seamlessly blends the realms of creativity and real estate, a synergy she discovered in 2005. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a fulfilling career as an account executive for Estée Lauder and regional makeup artist for Chanel, Parsons harnessed her creative talents and business acumen to embark on a thriving real estate career with Keller Williams Success Realty. Renowned for her commitment to excellence, she provides unparalleled white-glove service infused with a touch of luxury. A top 2 percent producer for 15 years with $200 million in sales, Parsons has been awarded the Midwest Highest Producing individual Agent by Keller Williams.

Definition of success? My definition of success has changed over the years. While it used to involve a relentless drive for excellence in my business and financial reward for my family, my priorities have changed. While this is still very important, today’s success is having a work-life balance that allows me to deliver great results to my clients while enjoying other important priorities, like spending invaluable time with my family and grandkids.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? When my husband’s company closed during the 2009 recession, I faced a choice—get a “real job” or dive into real estate. With much prayer, I chose real estate, and it has been an immeasurable blessing for our family ever since.

Powerful woman you admire the most? I deeply admire my mother. When my dad was wheelchair-bound with Multiple Sclerosis for over 20 years, she supported our family as a legal secretary and ensured all three of her kids graduated college debt-free. Despite caring for my dad full-time, she remained positive and instilled strong Christian values in us. Her resilience and cheerfulness have always been an inspiration.

BIG-HEARTED BROKER K

ATE FANSELOW, founder of Kate Fanselow Group, is a driving force in Barrington’s real estate market. With deep roots in Barrington, she stands as one of the area’s most dynamic brokers, recognized for her relentless work ethic, passion, and unwavering commitment to her clients. Fanselow has expanded her talents in the luxury sector, her team, and her network, providing personalized, concierge-level service that consistently exceeds expectations and brings joy to the homebuying and home-selling process.

Most rewarding part of what you do? I’ve been passionate about helping people my whole life, and now I have a career where I can take my strengths and use them for good. It’s so special to get to know a family and their dreams and goals. I take the responsibility of bringing those dreams to life very seriously, and it’s incredibly gratifying every time I can help make that happen.

How should women support other women? Women! Show up! My mom taught me this when I was a little girl, and it’s a Brené Brown lesson, too. Surround yourself with people who won’t blow out your candle. If your light is bright, it doesn’t mean you have to blow out others’ candles.

Definition of success? Doing what you love and being passionate. I think passion drives success and you have to have a deep love and fight in you to be successful. Sacrifices are mandatory.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? It’s incredibly risky to be in a business where, for you to make a living, people have to choose you. I put myself out there and give 100 percent, and every day that is a risk.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? Say yes, work hard, and it’s ok to cry. It’s not easy—it’s not supposed to be—but keep going. I promise it will pay off.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION

DARBY HILLS is a powerful force in community impact and personal achievement. With a distinguished legal career as an arbitrator, mediator, and assistant state’s attorney focused on child welfare, Hills co-founded Barrington Children’s Charities in 2010. Under her leadership, BCC has addressed child hunger and expanded to provide essential services to local children. As a Barrington Hills village trustee, beauty pageant titleholder, and committed volunteer, Hills’ dedication shines in every aspect of her work.

Most rewarding part of what you do? The most rewarding part is seeing the direct impact Barrington Children’s Charities has in our community. It’s rewarding to me when I meet the children and families we serve and hear how the food we provide and the services we offer allow the children to be successful learners and leaders. I am truly humbled. It’s also rewarding to hear how much it means to the volunteers and how they look forward to being there every week.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? View others as your teachers. When starting a business, or in my case, a nonprofit, the best advice I can give is to view others not just as a colleague, co-workers, employees, or volunteers, but as a person in a position to teach you. You will always have the opportunity to gain knowledge and better your chances of success.

Powerful woman you admire the most? My mom is the most powerful woman I admire most. As a single mom raising my brother and me, my mom sacrificed so much to provide for us. She consistently worked overtime to make ends meet and took on the bulk of parental duties, all while never missing one of my softball or basketball games. She is the most selfless and bravest person I know.

BOSS LADY D

R. LAUREN MATTEINI, founder of Boss Lady Docs, leads a thriving network of more than 200 female physicians in the Chicago area. As a fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon practicing locally at Fox Valley Orthopedics, she is celebrated for her expertise in motion-preserving techniques ensuring swift recovery and minimal discomfort. A Georgetown University School of Medicine alumna, she is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

Most rewarding part of what you do? Hearing from patients that I’ve changed their life or given them their life back is incredibly rewarding. So many of us take our health and mobility for granted, but nothing humbles us more quickly than pain. When I’m able to free a patient from discomfort and physical limitations, it’s one of the most satisfying things I can imagine.

Definition of success? That’s a multi-faceted question! A successful day for me typically means I spend most of my time in surgery, then seeing post-op patients to check in on their recovery, and ideally perhaps an appointment with a patient I know I can help. For a successful life, it’s utilizing every bit of my knowledge and experience to make someone’s life better, being healthy both physically and mentally, leaving no puzzle unsolved, and being good to the people I love and receiving that in return.

Traits great leaders possess? I would say humility, the ability to be fully present and accountable even in tough situations, being able to listen to what’s being said and what isn’t, and the ability to inspire others authentically and genuinely.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change in your daily routine? Yoga has brought a positive transformation to my life, enhancing both my physical and mental well-being.

ONE LIFE WONDER

LAUREN BRYNJELSEN, owner of One Life Kitchen in Barrington, lives by the mantra that life’s best memories are made around a table. Splitting her time between Barrington and Sarasota, Florida, she offers clients unforgettable cooking and dining experiences. A social media influencer and blogger, Brynjelsen is also deeply involved in philanthropy, contributing to the Service Club of Chicago and GSH Development Council. When she’s not creating culinary memories, she enjoys family time, playing the piano, and writing.

Most rewarding part of what you do? The most rewarding part of my job is bringing people together over food and wine. It warms my heart to see our guests making time to connect with others. I named my kitchen “One Life” because I truly believe these are the moments we will cherish.

How should women support other women? In business, I support other women by uplifting and celebrating their successes. A genuine compliment, sharing their achievements on social media, or a handwritten note are great ways to celebrate other women.

How do you inspire others? I inspire others not so much in words but more by my actions. I want to inspire and encourage others through kindness, compassion, and integrity.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? Know thyself! Understanding yourself will guide your decisions and help you remain authentic. Self-awareness has enabled me to seek assistance in areas I don’t excel and be able to concentrate on my strengths. With self-awareness, I can also better connect with clients, without pretending to be someone I’m not.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? I enjoy challenging myself with self-imposed boundaries. For example, I set limits on when I use my cell phone and when I eat, practicing intermittent fasting. These boundaries have strengthened my discipline, helping me stay focused on my daily goals and develop good habits.

BROWN HOPE REVITALIZER

DR. KARA LONDERGAN, founder of Hohm Psychotherapy (Healing Our Hearts and Minds), is dedicated to helping women transform trauma into triumph. Specializing in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), she empowers clients to turn adversity into opportunity. Beyond her practice, Londergan serves as a supervisor at Northwestern University, guiding new clinicians through complex cases and shaping the future of psychotherapy. Her work is a beacon of hope for those seeking healing and growth.

How do you inspire others? As a therapist, I support women who have endured complex trauma. Together, we redefine narratives, forging paths toward healing, empowerment, and transformative shifts. I am passionate about systemic change that dismantles antiquated and oppressive structures amplifying unheard voices. I show up with curiosity and compassion, being my authentic and sometimes messy self as we cultivate a connection that truly honors their unique story.

Definition of success? True success lies in our legacy and our profound impact on our children and the world. By prioritizing our own healing and service to others, we sow seeds of change that break intergenerational cycles, fostering more compassion, equity, inclusion, and hope.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The greatest risk was coming “hohm” to myself through my own therapy. I started over as a single mom while raising three children, went back to school for my master’s and Ph.D. in psychology, started my own practice, and now supervise other clinicians. Having my own practice now affords me the flexibility I need as a fiercely devoted mom.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had significant positive change on your daily routine? Heavy strength training combined with limiting sugar and alcohol has significantly improved my routine. The workouts boost my fitness and mental clarity while cutting out sugar and alcohol enhances my energy and focus. This balance keeps me recharged and better equipped to support my clients.

ROOTED IN SUCCESS M

AGGIE GROTHE, DMD, a family and cosmetic dentist, is the visionary founder of Root Dental, a private practice dental office with a holistic focus. She graduated from the University of Iowa with degrees in French language and chemistry, followed by a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Midwestern University. While establishing her practice from the ground up, Dr. Grothe is raising two young children, showcasing her dedication, expertise, and passion for both her profession and family.

Definition of success? Success means making a positive impact on others. In my practice, I create a compassionate, professional, and fun environment where my team feels valued. I also equip patients with the knowledge to improve their health through oral care. Personally, success is raising my daughters to be independent, wanting me in their lives but not needing me, and growing in my marriage with my incredible husband.

What did you dream of doing when you were younger? A country music singer! Until my senior year of high school, I sang at Barrington High School (BHS) talent shows and musicals, retirement homes, and school sporting events, even trying out for X Factor. That all changed when I took a human physiology course at BHS and fell in love with the complexities of the human body and how to improve its functioning.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? After I get home from work, I leave my phone in my bag, give my kids my undivided attention for at least an hour and a half, and take time to connect with my husband. It provides perspective, reminds me of my priorities, and is simply fun to play with my two sweet little girls without distractions. Being a mom of two under two is exhausting and so fulfilling at the same time.

ESSENCE OF ESTROGEN

ELIZABETH STERR, a certified integrative women’s health coach and expert in functional nutrition and lifestyle, brings a powerful edge to women’s health. After a decade in medical device sales collaborating with top specialists, her personal battle with infertility revealed a glaring gap in support and accurate information. Driven by this revelation, she founded ESTERRGEN to empower women through their reproductive and fertility journeys, offering a vital blend of support and healing.

Most rewarding part of what you do? My clients often face significant fear during periods of uncertainty—whether they’re anxious about when they’ll become pregnant, concerned about a potential return of endometriosis, or hopeful that their IVF treatment will succeed. I have the privilege of guiding women through these unknowns, helping them move from fear and sadness to hope and resilience. Supporting these transformations is incredibly rewarding and beyond words. We all need hope.

How do you empower others? I empower women by guiding them through a self-discovery journey of healing and growth. It is a process rooted in the belief that each individual knows her body best. By holding space for my client and listening to her story, I am able to provide the appropriate supporting tools. When the tools for change feel authentic, she has the power to optimize and take back control of her health and, ultimately, her life.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? I was so intimidated by meditation for the longest time. I never felt like I was doing it right. It wasn’t until I started my formal training in coaching that I understood all the various ways to meditate and the significant, proven health benefits. Meditation allows peace and positivity to be a part of my every day.

A beacon of innovation in school reform, she champions inclusive learning environments and tailored solutions for district improvement. Her expertise spans co-teaching, equitable discipline, and special education, positioning her as a catalyst for change. Her commitment empowers parents and advocates for children with disabilities. Through Liberté, she embodies her Haitian heritage’s spirit, driving educational liberation and lasting impact.

Most rewarding part of what you do? The most rewarding part of my work is empowering teachers and parents with the tools they need to help children develop into their best selves. This impact can last a lifetime, creating ripples of positive change. Witnessing the joy and relief on my clients’ faces fills my heart with warmth and inspiration.

How should women support other women? Women can support each other by ensuring each has a seat at the table where they can be fully, unapologetically themselves. It is only through honoring each other’s strengths, we can cultivate a safe environment where women can truly prosper and help create a better world.

How do you inspire others? Years ago, a former supervisor once said, “Let your work speak for itself.” With that in mind, I vowed to dedicate my efforts to living out the values my Haitian heritage has instilled in me—showing integrity and a strong work ethic. I make sure to share my vision clearly and listen deeply, understanding the emotions and perspectives of those around me. With whomever I work with, I foster a positive and respectful environment and share personal stories highlighting successes and failures. I’m human, mistakes can happen! By embodying these principles, I create a culture where motivation, growth, and mutual respect flourish.

With a passion for helping clients achieve their personal best through natural, non-invasive methods, Dr. Wendy finds joy in partnering with others on their journey to wellness. Her dedication to self-care inspires others to pursue holistic well-being with purpose and enthusiasm.

Most rewarding part of what you do? It’s a true honor to help our patients and clients achieve their personal best whether it is pain relief, aesthetics, body wellness, or weight loss with non-invasive, all-natural treatments and technologies. We celebrate our clients’ successes. It is beautiful to partner in another human being’s personal growth.

Traits you think great leaders possess? Great leaders know it’s not about themselves, rather it’s about serving people. I love my team and I fully admire that there’s something special in each one of them. They are an amazing team. We support, love, and respect each other, as well as the people we serve. If you have a team that is cohesive enough to pull that off even most days, it’s powerful. I lead, but most days I partner with some incredible people that I am blessed to share Barrington Back & Body.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? My best advice for starting out is to stay focused on your vision and ensure your staff and systems are organized. Take full responsibility for outcomes and surround yourself with people who balance your strengths and weaknesses. Encourage and celebrate your team, and communicate clearly. CULINARY QUEEN

SALLIE SCIMECA LOBUE, a first-generation Italian-American from suburban Chicago, weaves her vibrant heritage into her family and businesses. After her first child, she launched ZaZa’s Tavola Italiana in Barrington, blending her passion for Italian cuisine and family. As her family grew, so did her business with her second restaurant, 750 Cucina Rustica, in Cary. LoBue, a breast cancer survivor, celebrates her life and roots by merging her passion for food with her love of family.

Most rewarding part of what you do? What I like most about the restaurant business is that I have the privilege of providing a space for people to celebrate their accomplishments, unwind after work, and gather with friends. But the most rewarding part is providing an intimate space for their special occasions like weddings, showers, and gatherings for celebrations of life. I feel proud when I hear how much people enjoy our place or a particular menu item they love. Our restaurants have the best customers, and the most rewarding part is seeing them return over and over, and share our restaurant with their friends.

Powerful woman you admire the most? The women I admire most are all around me. They stay positive, show their vulnerabilities, and remain grounded no matter what. I admire moms who manage multiple schedules, run households, and multitask all day, especially those who also lead businesses and impact their communities. I value women who see themselves as less than perfect and aren’t afraid to show it. They’re “real” and true to themselves, unafraid to show their weaknesses and talk about their struggles, turning it all into fuel for their success. These women, who overcome challenges and balance it all, inspire me the most.

SERVING SMILES

AMANDA DYER, DDS, FAGD, is a force in the dental world. From her start at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry to seven years of service in the United States Navy, including a stint on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, she’s been redefining limits. After earning her fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, Dyer founded Studio Smiles, where she merges advanced dental techniques with a personal touch, transforming the patient experience with care.

How do you inspire others? Giving back to the community is a top priority for me. Our office organizes fundraising and charity drives for toys during the holidays and school supplies for struggling families for back-to-school. Additionally, we provide free dental care for children through service projects and participate in Illinois’ Mission of Mercy. I’m proud to mentor aspiring dental professionals, and our office partners with a local community college to offer an externship program for dental assistant students.

Best piece of advice for anyone starting out? The best advice I could give to anyone starting would be to learn as much as you can. It’s also important to find a mentor, shadow other professionals, ask all the questions, try new things, and take risks.

Traits you think great leaders possess? Great leaders lead by example and integrity, demonstrating compassion, patience, and understanding. They don’t just direct others on what to do, they teach, inspire, and show humility along the way.

Habit you’ve adopted that has had a significant positive change on your daily routine? The habit I’ve adopted that has made a significant impact on me is practicing gratitude. Protecting your inner peace is crucial. When life presents challenges, I find that reminding myself of what I’ve overcome and accomplished helps keep me grounded.

NATURAL BEAUTY

JOANNA WORTHINGTON, founder of SABI Studio, blends her art background with a passion for beauty. As a licensed aesthetician, certified microblader, and self-taught makeup artist, she applies her expertise in precision, subtle definition, and color theory to enhance each client’s unique features. With a decade of experience as an advertising art director and armed with degrees in fine arts and visual communications, Worthington excels at celebrating natural beauty through exceptional artistry.

Most rewarding part of what you do? At SABI, everyone who walks through our doors shares a single goal—to feel beautiful. That’s the most rewarding part of my job—helping people discover their own beauty. Whether they’re addressing changes from medical conditions like cancer, alopecia, trichotillomania, or thyroid issues, or simply seeking self-improvement, our clients leave feeling like their best selves. I believe that external beauty enhances internal radiance, leading to greater happiness, vitality, and confidence. Being part of their journey to renewed self-esteem is incredibly fulfilling.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? The crossover from advertising to the beauty industry was not a gradual one, it was like I was shot out of a cannon! My whole life I was an artist and after college I became an art director at an advertising agency. After spending 10 years doing that, I took two years off to be a stay-at-home mom. My incredibly supportive husband urged me to follow my passion which was doing something in the beauty industry. I enrolled in an aesthetics program and learned microblading. Six days after I completed my course, I took my first client and never looked back. Now, I have an amazing team of expert women that specialize in a variety of beauty services such as facials, lashes, brow maintenance and makeup artistry to whom I owe so much of my continued success.

BOARD CHAMPION

R

OSANNA PRATT, the visionary behind Chewcuterie Grazing Boards, has turned her love for food and entertainment into a thriving business. What began nearly four years ago as a personal endeavor has blossomed into a sought-after service, offering everything from individual jarcuterie to grand grazing tables for parties and events. Featured on Fox Chicago News and WGN Spotlight Chicago, Pratt showcases her expertise and inspires others to elevate their gatherings with beautifully crafted charcuterie boards.

Greatest risk you’ve taken as a professional? It was leaving my full-time marketing and public relations position I was at for nearly 12 years and making Chewcuterie my full-time gig. Was it scary? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the full support of my amazing husband who has been my cheerleader since day one. Being risky in business is worth it especially if you have an unstoppable support system to back you!

How should women support other women? The best way for women to support women is to simply speak highly of one another—uplifting each other and encouraging one another. In business, the biggest support I receive is getting referrals from female clients. It’s the best compliment I get!

Powerful woman you admire the most? The most powerful women I admire are those in my circle. My mother came to this country at 12, spoke no English, then earned a degree in architecture and ran a successful business for more than 30 years. I also respect my motherin-law, who balanced raising her children with a thriving career as a young single mom. Additionally, I admire fellow working moms who excel in their careers while being dedicated parents and spouses. These women are truly the ones who inspire me most.

PETAL POWER

HILARY ATAMIAN, founder of Grace Gardens, transforms events with over 30 varieties of cut flowers grown on her Barrington property. Her vintage Ford flower truck doubles as a mobile flower bar, perfect for festivals, farmers markets, and private events. From her beginnings as an elementary educator to a personal trainer for music industry elites, Atamian’s diverse background drives her flourishing flower business. Her motto? Embrace the leap—start where you stand and let your passion bloom.

Most rewarding part of what you do? I am incredibly inspired by the way flowers impact our lives—the way they conjure up emotion and memory and how they have such powerful meanings throughout life’s events. I find it incredibly rewarding and feel so lucky to be able to bring beauty and joy into people’s lives through flowers and I love that our flower bars allow clients to tap into their creative side for their special life events.

How do you inspire others? I hope I can inspire women to pursue their dreams or goals. I want women to know that they don’t have to be stuck in some sort of societal standard and they can fulfill their dreams and be powerful in whatever way is authentic to them.

Definition of success? In order to define success, I think it’s best to define what it is not. Success shouldn’t be judged by the size of our bank accounts, what kind of car we drive, or even our awards or accolades. Success should be judged by our relationships, the impact we have on others, and the way we take on challenges and reach our goals.

WORDS BY

PHOTOS BY

At ZaZa’s Tavola Italiana in Lake Barrington, Sallie and Massimo LoBue have poured their heart, soul, and plenty of secret family recipes into an Italian American restaurant that does the Old World—and their own ancestors—proud.

Grigliata di Pesce
Fire-grilled shrimp, scallops, calamari, octopus, & fresh fennel in a lemon vinaigrette

I’ve only met Sallie and Massimo LoBue, owners of the ZaZa’s Tavola Italiana in Lake Barrington, once in my life. But after a recent Saturday spent slurping Massimo’s homemade pappardelle and swapping stories with Sallie about three of life’s greatest pleasure—Italian food, family, and affordable vacation spots in Puglia—I feel like we’re blood related. Maybe a long-lost cousin on my Sicilian-born Uncle Pete’s side or, perhaps, siblings in some alternate timeline.

Then again, I’ve been told that the LoBues have that effect on a lot of people. Not just Sallie and Massimo, but the whole LoBue family. A few nights every week, Massimo’s 73-year-old father, Filippo, stands guard next to ZaZa’s host stand, chewing the fat and shaking hands with guests the way maître d’s used to during the golden age of red sauce Italian American joints.

In some ways, Filippo is one of ZaZa’s marque attractions. He stands guard over the dining room, monitoring every table like he’s a Vegas pit boss. If anyone—regulars or newcomers—run into an issue, Filippo will take care of it for them. Which might explain why he’s developed a fan base that hovers somewhere between Caleb Williams and Taylor Swift.

I can’t quite pinpoint what it is exactly about ZaZa’s that resonates so deeply with me. Maybe it’s the restaurant’s soundtrack, which cycles through the same Rat Pack classics my Neapolitan grandmother played on an endless loop on her record player. Or maybe it’s the sheer generosity of ZaZa’s food offerings. The LoBues serve crispy ragufilled arancini that are the size of bocce balls. They offer guests the holy quartet of Italian American antipasti—crusty bread, olive oil, grated Parmesan, and olives—free of charge. And then there’s ZaZa’s killer grilled seafood platters, which contains so many pieces of lemon-kissed calamari, shrimp, scallops, and octopus that half of the Adriatic must have

been trawled just to prepare for one night’s dinner service.

There are plenty of other Italian kitchens that will ply you with so much food you’ll want to cry, “Basta, basta.” The magic of ZaZa’s is that the LoBues have poured their lives—heart, soul, and imported Italian ingredients—into this restaurant. Every picture frame, light fixture, and bowl of pasta seems to have its own charming backstory.

Yes, it’s a business, but it’s also a 250-seat, 4,000-square-foot pop-up storybook that pays homage to not just Sallie and Massimo but every branch of their respective family trees. Massimo was born 30 minutes outside of Palermo, Sicily—his mother was originally from the Puglia region—before he emigrated to the United States at 2 years old.

In a twist of fate, Sallie is a first-generation Italian American whose family lived just 15 minutes away from Massimo’s birthplace. She says that her family was intent on assimilating into American culture, which might explain why ZaZa’s voluminous menu combines 1950s-era Italian American classics (backed clams, sausage and peppers, eggplant parmigiana) with recipes that taste like they were directly imported from the Old Country, including a giant Sicilian-style fried artichoke stuffed with breadcrumbs that taste like ground-up garlic bread.

Cocktails

ZaZa’s cocktail list is delightfully old-school. Tell your server what you like, and the bar will shake it up for you. But the LoBues also offer a short list of signature cocktails that are worth a twirl.

Raspberry Cosmo:

It’s the perfect color: like blushing cherubs in a Baroque painting. Tastes just as heavenly thanks to a base of Smirnoff Raspberry vodka, some cranberry juice and a hint of Cointreau.

Cucumber Gin:

It’s not easy to find a cocktail that pairs well with Italian grilled seafood appetizers, but this one fits the bill, given all of its lush botanicals, including some spa-like flavors from its cucumbers and a splash of StGermain elderflower liquor.

Pappardelle Pork Ragu

If you order Massimo’s pasta and polpette platter you can take comfort in the fact that the meatball have been passed down through the generations on his mother’s side. And if you see Massimo’s pork shoulder ragu on the daily special list, just order it. You can thank us later. It’s a Mount Etna-sized mountain of pasta topped with tender tufts of pork shoulder snowed over by a thick cap of fresh ricotta. It’s one of Massimo’s all-time favorites, which he often whips up for his family back at home.

Sallie says that ZaZa’s Tavola is a love letter to Italian food and their family. But it’s also a living testament to Massimo and Sallie’s own relationship, which is a love story worthy of its own Dean Martin ballad. They grew up in Des Plaines, just a few blocks from each other. They attended the same schools. Started dating as teens and were married in 1998. “I think our skills and traits are complementary,” says Sallie. “But more importantly, I think we have similar values—similar belief systems.”

In recalling their courtship Sallie talks a great deal about the first dish her father made for Massimo in their home. It was a simple dish, what would be considered cucina povera, or Italian peasant food. It was a bowl of pasta ricotta. Mini rigatoni. Ricotta. Pepper. Olive oil. Simple, fresh and delicious, which is exactly the essence of ZaZa’s own menu.

“We have a lot of shared memories together about food,” says Sallie. And that love—for each other and the shared experiences of enjoying simple but incredibly flavorful meal—can be felt in the dining room and the dishes.

For years, Massimo worked with his brother in the food distribution business, running D&L Produce, where he learned how to pick produce like he was born on a farm. “People who say that the owning a restaurant is the hardest business have never run a produce business,” says Massimo.

But all that hard work paid dividends and may explain why ZaZa’s has been humming along since it opened in 2005. Turns out, Massimo has a “guy” for everything. He only buys wild-caught calamari, he says, from Boston, USA. The calamari is lightly dusted— not breaded, Sallie stresses— and then gently fried.

I’ve enjoyed my share of ZaZa’s signature dishes before. Consider ordering the scallops dressed in a cream sauce with fennel. It’s a briny sauce with an undercurrent of anise, which tastes like you’re sipping oysters and chasing it with shot of sambuca.

You can’t go wrong with any of the above, but we were impressed by a few new discoveries as well, including a giant gently battered filet of white fish that could have masqueraded as a whole Dover sole. It’s dressed with a balsamic and caper sauce so dark you could serve it as an Italian-style gravy for Thanksgiving. And then there’s dessert, which includes what is now one of my all-time favorite suburban tiramisus. The mascarpone is whipped like a French cream and the dish is served—I exaggerate not—in a square glass casserole dish large enough to fit a Midwestern church congregation.

We obviously aren’t the only ones completely dazzled by the size and quality of our tiramisu. During dessert, our waiter leaned over our table and whispered a secret: “Yeah, we couldn’t believe they actually made our tiramisu bigger, but no one’s complaining, including me.”

There was a moment, after our meal, when I felt at complete peace. Great food and great conversation. What more could you ask for? Plus, Dean Martin was singing love songs to me again. Which is when Sallie stopped by to see how we were doing. She seems to know everyone, right down to the particular times when some regulars are going to visit. There’s the local golf club members. The widows and widowers. And plenty of former athletes

and sportscasters. “It means something to us,” she says, “to feel like we’ve become a part of this community, which I love.”

She pauses for a moment and then says, “I’d like to show you something.” There are black-and white photos on almost every wall in the restaurant. Some are photos of Italy. Some are snapshots of 1950s-era Hollywood stars and starlets. There are boxers and baseball players and football stars. But Sallie walks over to a section of photos filled with people no one but she and her family would recognize. She points to one photo in particular: It’s an old snapshot of a small group of people huddled around a table. They’ve all turned their chairs to face the camera.

"This is my father, when he came to the United States on a boat," she says, swallowing hard as if a sudden lump has developed in her throat. “All these people came here because they were hungry for something better,” she says. “They’re at dinner; they have their best clothes on, which a lot of other people wouldn’t considered ‘nice’ clothes. Except,” she says, pointing at a man in the photo, “Look at my father. He was just as poor as anybody, but he wanted to dress for success and look his best when he sat down to eat.”

She pauses for a moment. She twirls around, almost in a 360-degree pirouette, to survey the restaurant that she and Massimo have built. It feels like she’s looking for something, but what she’s really searching for is the right words to express how much she loves this place. She finds the sentiment she’s been searching for all night. “The history of my family is in this place—everywhere.”

To which I can honestly say, “Me, too, Sallie. Me, too.”

DIVORCE WITHOUT COURT: MEDIATION

Mediation is a process frequently utilized in divorce proceedings to resolve both child-related and financial matters. Mediated divorces are typically less expensive and are resolved quicker than litigated divorces. In mediation, spouses and their attorneys agree upon a mediator who is usually a seasoned divorce attorney or a retired domestic relations judge. In some instances, the court will select the mediator for the parties. The parties can attend mediation with or without their attorneys but, either way, should have their own attorneys to consult with before signing off on any mediated agreements. Mediation is not a binding process; the mediator will not take sides and will not make any final decisions for the family. The mediator will guide discussions, as one of the primary advantages of mediation in divorce cases is its focus on preserving relationships. Traditional litigation tends to fuel adversarial dynamics between spouses, further escalating tensions. Mediation, on the other hand, encourages open communication, empathy, and cooperation. By working together to find mutually agreeable solutions, couples are more likely to maintain amicable post-divorce relationships, which is especially crucial when children are involved. In a mediated divorce, couples have greater control over the outcome compared to a court-imposed decision. This empowerment allows individuals to shape their own agreements tailored to their unique circumstances which can lead to more satisfactory and durable agreements, reducing the likelihood of postdivorce disputes.

Amangiri, Desert View of Suite

A DIAMOND IN THE DESERT

The luxurious Amangiri resort offers glorious accommodations and the perfect location to explore Utah’s breathtaking landscape.
WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

Ioften share tales of faraway destinations, but I recently discovered the most spectacular gem just a short flight from Chicago. Utah luxury resort Amangiri is one of the world’s most renowned retreats and has been showered with well-deserved accolades including Robb Report’s recent declaration that Amangiri is one of “The 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth.”

Set in a vast desert landscape, Amangiri (meaning “peaceful mountain” in Sanskrit) is a contemporary masterpiece in the heart of the greatest concentration of national parks in North America. Surrounded by dramatic ancient rock formations and marbled canyons on the majestic Colorado Plateau, Amangiri provides front-row

access to more than 900 acres of untouched wilderness enabling a world of adventure and exploration.

We flew into Page, Arizona—a tiny airport peppered with private planes—where we were welcomed by an Amangiri representative who drove us the short 20-minute jaunt to the resort in Canyon Point, Utah. Driving through Page, we admired the striking red and orange sandstone rising against a clear blue sky in forms ranging from slender columns of rock called hoodoos to flat-topped buttes and sheer-faced cliffs. As we crossed the Utah border and approached Amangiri, the topography altered from red sandstone to white limestone with towering white cliffs hugging the road as we drove deep into the canyon. During childhood road trips to visit

family in Iowa, I loved to find “faces” in the stone bluffs flanking the Mississippi River. On this journey with childlike excitement, I discovered a “monkey” and a “lion” peering out of the rock, both welcoming us to a great adventure.

At the end of a tree-lined drive and perched on the canyon floor, Amangiri’s main building and 34 modernist suites welcome guests to one of the world’s most dramatic natural settings. Created more than 100 million years ago when the oceans rose and petrified what was once the world’s largest desert, the landscape resembles huge sand dunes frozen in place.

The resort’s angular, minimalist architecture honors and respects the magic and mystery of this remarkable terrain by seamlessly blending into its surroundings. Our Desert Wing suite, for example, was accessed via a narrow-walled lane designed as a tribute to the area’s famed slot canyons. The suite’s view stole our breath—the entire end of the room bore floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rolling mesa and our desert lounge with a built-in firepit. Even the bathroom’s shower/bathing area boasted an incredible desert view while a sliding barn door provided privacy for the green-tiled lavatory. The room’s neutral palette, heavy on white, allowed the terrain’s ever-changing colors to be the real focus. As the day’s light waxed and waned, the limestone’s hues shifted from a delicate cream to a deep orange.

If glamping is more your preference, Amangiri offers tented pavilions nestled into the cliff’s base a short 5-minute drive from the resort. Each of Camp Sarika’s 10 pavilions provides the utmost luxury including a firepit and private plunge pool.

The main Pavilion, the heart of the property, contains the living

room, dining room, gallery, and boutique. One of our favorite Amangiri locations was the stunning pool situated just outside the Pavilion. We spent hours on the poolside day beds mesmerized as the sun’s reflection on the water created a light show that danced across the 160-million-year-old rock formation at the pool’s edge. While the temptation to remain poolside was strong, a myriad of activities encouraged us to explore our surroundings.

ADVENTURES

Located on the Navajo reservation, the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park remains undeveloped seeming much the same as it was a millennium ago. The park is home to several slot canyons—extremely narrow canyons that can measure as narrow as 3 feet in width and be as deep as 300 feet. Created by rain erosion over millions of years, the walls of these rare sandstone formations resemble

billowing capes and contain a kaleidoscope of colors that shift with the golden light. Social media images of these slot canyons have captivated viewers from all over the world and have increased tourism dramatically. Fortunately, a peaceful “in the middle of nowhere” feeling still prevails.

Our Amangiri Navajo guide, Ammon, took us to three slot canyons—Upper Antelope Canyon (a site made famous by Instagrammers and an Apple wallpaper option), the curvy Rattle Snake Canyon, and Owl Canyon—named for its great horned inhabitants. After awe-inspiring hours, we left the slot canyons to hike another geological marvel—Horseshoe Bend. The rocky canyon descends

1,000 feet to the Colorado River, giving us a renewed appreciation for nature’s artistry.

Hiking was also a favorite activity on the Amangiri grounds. The resort offers complimentary daily hikes that give guests individualized introductions to the ecology, geology, and human history of the area. I highly recommend the West Coyote Trail, with its lacey purple lichen and pops of scrub oak, and the Broken Arrow Cave Trail, which ends in a cavern used by the land’s indigenous people for more than 8,000 years.

The resort also offers rock-climbing experiences for every adventurer—some catering to the curious novice while others exist for the most daring of enthusiasts. Our decision to try via ferrata rock climbing put us in the latter camp. A via ferrata (Italian for “iron way) is a climbing route on a steep, exposed mountain that uses metal rails, ladders, or rungs that climbers clip into on their ascent. Our day began when we were picked up for our destination—a giant hoodoo. After our skilled guide walked us through the initial training course, it was off to “clip, clip, climb, (don’t look down), clip, clip, climb.” The first leg was a vertical ascent on metal rungs affixed to the face of the rock. Other ascents included ladders while some sported bridges. The first bridge was an 18-inch-wide suspension

Via Ferrata

bridge spanning a 600-foot-deep gorge. The second bridge was much skinnier (a 6-inch bridge) and I tripped but the safety cables prevented my untimely demise. Once we reached the summit, we were rewarded by the stunning panoramic views. After a little exploration, rehydration, and a few photos, it was time to descend; a bit of a nail-biter as it wasn’t always easy to see where your foot was landing. Despite my initial hesitation and some harrowing moments, I was so proud to complete the route—creating a lifelong memory of a magnificent adventure alongside my daughter.

In addition to hiking and climbing, Amangiri offers activities ranging from hot air balloon rides and horseback riding with Amangiri’s wranglers to cultural encounters immersing guests in the Native American culture. The resort’s location gives guests access to an array of natural attractions from national parks (Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon are just two) to the gloriousness of Lake Powell (the second largest man-made lake). We could have been entertained for weeks.

SPA

After a thrilling day outside, be sure to visit the Aman Spa for a little tender loving care. As I sat by the fireplace and sipped warm pear ginger tea while the sounds of a Navajo flute floated through the air and water elements echoed in the distance, I thought I had never been so relaxed before a treatment. I highly recommend the spa’s signature Utah Salt & Clay Wrap, a delightful way to experience two key components of the 45th state.

CUISINE

The main restaurant’s view pays tribute to the resort’s extraordinary setting while the menu pays tribute to Native American cuisine. Sage (the savory smell is noticeable throughout the property) is a flavorful element of many dishes. My favorite meal was enjoyed fireside as the sun sank behind the mesa and started with a carrot, sage, and ginger soup followed by a miso salmon with truffle potatoes and cauliflower in a fig glaze. The grand finale was a grenache in a hazelnut crust.

Amangiri, through architecture, adventure, and cuisine, offers a chic antidote to the pressures of our bustling, industrial, and ever-changing world. This earthly paradise, a haven for billionaires and celebrities, provides its guests with tranquility wrapped in luxury. Book now—beauty, peace, astonishment, and the via ferrata await.

The Rising Star: A Barrington Teen’s Journey to the National Stage

Ayanna Sidi’s powerful voice has propelled her from local stage productions to performing in national sports arenas in front of thousands of fans.

At just 14, Ayanna Sidi’s voice has already reverberated through some of the largest venues in the Midwest. Whether the occasion is an exciting Milwaukee Bucks game or a solemn memorial event, Sidi is steadily cultivating her singing career and earning recognition.

Sidi’s journey began early. As a curious 3-yearold, she asked her parents for singing lessons. Unable to find suitable classes for such a young child, they sought advice from a voice coach who suggested starting with piano lessons. Thus, Sidi’s musical education began. The lessons were soon complemented by music theater class, and she participated in numerous plays and joined the Barrington Children’s Choir, a crucial step in her artistic development.

A few years later, when she was ready for a bigger stage, local theater company Move Productions offered her the role of Glenda in their production of Wicked. This was a pivotal moment; when asked if she could sing, Ayanna responded confidently, “Of course, I can.”

Having never heard her sing in a lead role, her parents were astonished. “That’s when we realized just how talented she is!” recalls her mother, Nicole Sidi.

Her undeniable talent led her to Brandy Braxton, the owner of Victory Voice in Cary, Illinois. Under Braxton’s guidance, Sidi honed her craft through voice lessons. Braxton then suggested Sidi start singing the national anthem at various events—a practice she

believed would further refine Sidi’s skills.

Sidi’s first national anthem performances were at local baseball and youth football games. She gradually progressed to larger events, including a notable performance for Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove, Illinois in front of a crowd of 2,000 people. Then, just as her career appeared to be taking off, Sidi faced a significant setback—a serious hip injury that required three surgeries and a lengthy recovery period. Despite this, Sidi stayed determined. She submitted a video audition to sing the national anthem at a Milwaukee Bucks game, and her talent shone through. In March 2024, she performed before 18,000 fans, and by July, she was captivating an audience of 35,000 at a Milwaukee Brewers game. These accomplishments were remarkable for any singer, let alone one so young.

Sidi’s exceptional performances are not limited to sports venues. She has also lent her voice to charitable causes, including the Folds of Honor Barrington 9/11 Memorial event. When asked if she ever gets nervous singing she replies, “Not at all.”

Currently a freshman at Barrington High, Sidi aims to highlight her musical achievements in her college applications to, hopefully, secure a scholarship. Braxton believes Sidi’s experiences and talent will make her a strong candidate for collegiate programs.

As she continues to evolve as a singer, entertaining and inspiring those within ear’s reach, Sidi’s bright future seems all but assured. “Singing is something that I always liked to do since I was 3, and I feel singing will always be part of my life in some way,” she observes.
