HAPPENINGS
The summer vacations are winding down, and many children have started school already. September brings a fresh start and a cool down after a hot summer, and this Fall brings a cool down for the hot housing market as well. Though it is still a seller’s market, buyers may begin to have more negotiating power as the market temporarily quiets down.
The Barrington housing market shows that prices are up 17.8% from July 2020, and inventory dropped 46.4% from July 2020. Offers are not coming in as abundantly as they were several months ago. If you’re a buyer, don’t let high home prices deter you. You want to work with an agent who understands how to negotiate for YOU and YOUR needs.

The Fall market can often mean less competition amongst buyers, however with the ever-changing market, it is difficult to predict. Variables such as like eviction rules, interest rates, and government backed business closures further make the future uncertain, so have your ducks in a row and a plan so you can take advantage of the opportunities that arise.
Things are different now. The real estate world has had to adapt as so many others did amidst the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic changed how we market and sell real estate, and these methods aren’t going away anytime soon. More often you are seeing sales that are happening sight-unseen and more

showings/open houses are still happening virtually. As I always say, the first showing nowadays is not happening in person, it happens online. If the house is not presenting well online, buyers will take a pass and move on to the next property.
Selling or buying a home is stressful, and this is something I understand completely as a real estate broker. It is an emotional process involving one of the biggest purchases or sales in your life. Finding a real estate broker who understands your needs and the immense pressure that comes with buying and selling real estate is imperative, as they can help to make the process much smoother for you.
Warm regards, Connie

SHANA VITEK
DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW PARTNER BEERMANN LLP
Shana Vitek has practiced divorce and family law exclusively since 2003. “Every family is different,” says Ms. Vitek. “Some cases call for an aggressive approach and litigation. Others can be settled entirely outside of court.” A realist, she knows there are also plenty of positives. “Just getting the basic information and understanding of the court system can be empowering. It’s hard for people to envision at the beginning, but I continuously see both men and women come out happier on the other side,” she says.

THE WELL-LOVED HOUSE
This fall, Elle Décor A-List designer Ashley Whittaker releases her first book in which she shares the secrets of her colorful, pattern-filled, classic rooms. In A Well-Loved House, she shares a selection of dwellings, from gracious Connecticut estates to chic Manhattan pieds-a-terre to water front beach houses on the Florida coast and a never-before seen look at the designer’s own home in the country. A native of Hoffman Estates, Abra Engler attended Fremd High School and graduated from Roosevelt University with Honors. In 1974, Engler’s Grandfather started Engler Heating & Air Conditioning Co., which to this day remains her family’s business. Currently her father serves as the President, with Engler acting as business manager since 2012. On the side, Engler is a realtor with Zerillo Realty and in the past has volunteered to teach Faith Formation at St. Annes and Holy Family. She joined the Barrington Junior Women’s Club in 2015 and served as treasurer for the past year. Calling a condo in the village home, Engler lives with her rescue cat, Hunter, and when not working spends most of her time with family and friends. She enjoys trying new restaurants and can’t wait to get back to traveling to Europe!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I was born in Arlington Heights to parents who emigrated from Hong Kong in the late 1960s to attend graduate school and college in America. My husband, Charley, and I met at Northwestern University, where we both went to college, more than two decades ago, and we’ve been living in South Barrington for the last 10 years. Charley works as a doctor, and I’m a freelance journalist. Our son, Chandler, 12, is a rising 7th grader at Station Middle School, and our daughter, Callie, 8, is a rising 3rd grader at Country-
side Elementary. Both are in the Chinese Immersion program, and Chandler also spent three years in the Extended Self-Contained program at Hough Street School. We’re so appreciative of all the opportunities District 220 has given them.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD?
I ran for the Barrington 220 School Board because I love our community. I’m so grateful for how the teachers, staff, and fellow families who have cared for our kiddos, and I wanted to give back by serving. I hope to do everything I can to bring kindness, humility, and respect to the way our community engages in dialogue with one another.
I also want to ensure voices that have felt marginalized in District 220 are listened to and amplified in decision-making processes.
I initially was asked to run for the school board by several parents and community members in our District 220 community, and I’m grateful, honored and humbled by
the trust they and thousands of other voters in our district have put in me.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE BIGGEST ISSUES FACING THE SCHOOL BOARD?
The biggest priority is to ensure our students stay in school after a tumultuous year and a half in which education everywhere was drastically altered by the Covid-19 pandemic. Pediatricians and educators all over the country have agreed that in-person learning is the most effective and best option for the vast majority of kids, and we need to create an optimal environment for our District 220 students to learn in dynamic ways. We also need to ensure students who have struggled through the pandemic receive the social, emotional, and mental supports they need in order to thrive.
We also have a $147 million referendum approved by District 220’s voters that we’re in the process of implementing, and I’m excited to see all the improvements to our

facilities and buildings that will result from it. Through partnering with our new superintendent, Robert Hunt, who started in July, we also have the chance to invite our community into shaping a new strategic plan that will influence education in our district for the next decade. Finally, the Board has prioritized racial equity in our district. We are well-poised to partner with community organizations to bring equity to every part of our district and ensure each student has the resources and tools they need for an amazing, inclusive, and expansive education. As a district with about 40 percent students of color, we also have a tremendous opportunity to reflect our community’s demographics in how we hire and with whom we partner, not only when it comes to race but also in our diversity of age, experience, orientation, class, thought, and geography.
WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH YOUR POSITION?
I’ve been a member of District 220’s Board of Education for only a few months, and I have already learned so much. Veteran board members have told me it takes one or two years just to settle into the position, so I anticipate spending this first year continuing to learn how to be a cooperative, effective school board member for our community. One cool thing I’ve already been able to do as a board member is to hand out diplomas to Barrington High School’s 2021 graduates. It was the first high school graduation I attended since my own 22 years ago, and the students inspired me so much. It made me want to go back to high school and experience the fun and learning all over again, so as long as I don’t have to retake trigonometry and go through finals, I’m in!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?
I’m most looking forward to collaborating with a team of six other people on the Board, all of us with different backgrounds,
personalities, and experiences, to ensure the best learning environment and education for more than 8,000 students across our school district. I’m also eager to engage with and listen to every part of our District 220 community.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT READERS MAY BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I love to run, and so far, I’ve done 26 marathons and four ultramarathons. The farthest race I’ve run has been 50 miles, but I turned 40 years old this summer, and in a full-blown mid-life crisis moment, I signed up for my first 100-mile race! The cutoff time is 30 hours, and I can’t even stay up for 30 hours straight, so I think I’ll need some divine intervention to finish it. My kids and I also practice taekwondo together. We’re all black belts in the martial art, which might be the best stress reliever ever. We’re all learning how to play the cello together, as well, though they’re already much better than me.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I was born and raised in Barrington and am so thankful to be raising my three children in this wonderful community that helped raise me. I graduated from Barrington High School (BHS)—Class of ‘95! I attended Miami University where I met my husband, Chris. We moved back to Barrington about eight years ago and settled into an historic schoolhouse I have admired since I was a child. This is going to be a busy year for us, as we will have children across all levels of our district, a 5th grader at Roslyn, a 7th

I come from a family who believes in service and giving back to your community. For me, there is nothing more important than our children and our schools. I have served on the Roslyn Road PTO for years, my time there has shown me how important volunteers are to our schools and what it takes to make D220 a successful district. I believe
our schools are the heart of our community and, as a school board member, I now have the privilege of serving our entire district.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE BIGGEST ISSUES FACING THE SCHOOL BOARD?
In the short term, I feel our biggest issue is recovering from the impact of the pandemic. Our children must come first. We also need to work as a Board to heal the division this has caused within our community and earn back their trust. Beyond that, I look forward to implementing Build 220 and the exciting
changes we have coming to our schools thanks to our $147 million referendum that was passed in 2020.
WHAT WILL YOU DO IN YOUR POSITION?
We have such amazing families, parents, and children in Barrington and I look forward to promoting their interests to the best of my ability. I want to work on better communication and transparency between
the district and the community. I hope to provide more opportunities for our families to engage with the district and add their own unique abilities and perspectives.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FOR WARD TO?
I am most looking forward to getting to know all aspects of our wonderful district, connecting with community members, working for our children, and making a pos
itive impact on the community I am proud to call home.
What is something that readers may be surprised to know about you?
When I say my family is big on volunteering, I mean this in all sincerity. My dad serves on the Barrington Hills Board of Health, my sister is a trustee in Barrington Hills, and my husband is the Cuba Township Supervisor. We truly love this community and are proud to give back every way we can.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I grew up in Connecticut and attended the University of Notre Dame. After graduating with a degree in Corporate Finance and Business Economics, I started my career in investment banking in Chicago. Shortly before the birth of our daughter, who is now nearly eight-years-old, I moved to Barrington. Currently, my daughter is a rising second grader in the Chinese Immersion Program at Countryside Elementary (Go Wildcats!). To serve my community, I decided to run for a position on the Barrington 220 Board of Education.
In addition to serving on the Barrington 220 Board of Education, I am also involved in a variety of District related committees and other volunteer endeavors. I serve on the Board of Education’s Finance Committee and District’s Health Insurance, Labor Management, and Resource Allocation Committees. Elsewhere, I am the co-leader of Brownie Girl Scout Troop 310, a room parent at Countryside Elementary School, and a member of the board of directors for the Notre Dame Club of Lake County.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD?
I decided to run for the Barrington 220 Board of Education because I believe I have a vocation to serve my community. Among the many reasons that make Barrington a wonderful place to live is the incredible school district. I felt it was the right time to run last winter and was blessed to be elected to serve my neighbors.
WHAT DID YOU FEEL ARE THE BIGGEST ISSUES FACING THE SCHOOL BOARD?
The biggest issue facing the school board today is the division in our community on a variety of matters ranging from the pandemic response to curriculum. My goal is to work with all stakeholders in the community and ensure equitable decisions are made that will reflect the needs of the entire community: students, parents, and taxpayers.
WHAT WILL YOU DO IN YOUR POSITION?
I look to serve in the exact same manner in which I conduct any work I do, with honor, integrity, and hard work. I commit to serving tirelessly and represent all Barrington resi-
dents. Furthermore, I want to make sure that I always do what is best for the community at large.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?
I am most looking forward to connecting with my neighbors, identifying their needs, and facilitating the actions needed to best serve our community. Barrington is a special place and it would be the highlight of a lifetime to know that my service yielded a positive outcome for a place that I am proud to call home and privileged to be a part.
WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT READERS MAY BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Readers may be surprised to know that I was two classes short of graduating with a second degree in the Spanish language. While in college, I lived in Toledo, Spain for a semester and had the opportunity to learn Spanish to the point where I would consider myself conversational (well at least I was 15 years ago…). Otherwise, Mandarin was my first language, and of course, I speak English as well.

SON OF A BUTCHER MAN
The only thing more impressive than Jovanny Diaz’s masa tacos at Tacos Guanajuato in Kildeer may be his signature mole.

It takes Diaz two days to make his velvety mole. It’s his own creation, not a mole inspired by a specific region of Mexico. Five different grilled peppers are bathed in a broth made from the chicken hocks, then spiked with a cornucopia of flavors—tomatillos, raisins, cinnamon, bread, plantains, and chocolate to name a few. The result is so sumptuously aromatic— the scent reminded me of driving by the old Blommer’s Chocolate Factory—that sweet smoke becomes its dominant flavor. The mole is laded over three hefty Chihuahua cheese-stuffed tortillas filled with your choice of chicken, steak, ground beef, or cheese.
Iascribe to only one inviolable rule when it comes to ordering tacos. Never, ever judge a taco by its price tag. I’ve had “one-buck-chuck” tacos so tasty they made my heart burst like a split piñata. And I’ve sampled ridiculously pricy tacos so nuanced I would’ve opened a second mortgage to obtain their recipe. So generally speaking, I order first and worry about the tab later. Our first round at Tacos Guanajuato in Kildeer went as planned. We ordered like a pair of hungry chefs stuck on a five-hour layover in Mexico City. Classic carnitas: Note the restraint in using only red onion, cilantro, and a touch of guacamole so the carnitas take center stage. Spanish octopus tacos: Tiny grilled morsels marinated in orange juice, lime, and thyme topped with a guajillo mayonnaise and thin crispy potato sticks. As well as a truly avant-garde option, chef Jovanny Diaz’s tongue-in-cheek
That undercurrent of semi-sweet agave is due to the tequila Diaz uses in his marinade. Served in a giant blistering-hot mulcajete, the gurgling fajita sauce is the perfect texture, hovering between a broth and a bisque. Its weightiness is a product of adding Chihuahua cheese and a salsa verde to the mulcajete so that the quick-seared steak, chicken, and shrimp soaks up extra flavor as they crackle and roast at your table.
“Nashville Hot” tacos: Tiny fried chicken flamethrowers—dressed in a sauce made from chile de arbol and guajillo peppers—so spicy my gringo eyes wept from the aromas alone.
Truth is, chef Diaz’s tacos are a find, each served on wonderfully spongy masa tortillas that are grilled to order. Midway into our feast, I couldn’t help but break my own commandment and check the prices. Four to five bucks each? For tacos made from quality rib-eye, Norwegian salmon, and homemade chorizo? How, I wondered, does this place turn a profit?
Answer: Diaz is the son of a butcher, whose family made its own cheeses and Mexican cremas. When owner Margarita Challenger was running a previous restaurant, she gave Diaz a test run and immediately recognized his talent. “All I want,” Challenger told him, “is someone with an open mind because an open mind can continually be filled with new ideas.” Turns out, Diaz has ideas to burn. He keeps his prices low by butchering his own meats and making just about everything else—mole, salsas, sauces tres leches cakes—from scratch.
The only problem that we found was that his main dishes are every bit as memorable as his tacos. So do as we did: Graze on some tacos—no HELOC required—while saving room for the his enmoladas and fajita: two dishes so mouthwateringly tender only a butcher’s son could produce them.
Tacos Guanajuato is located at 20771 N. Rand Road in Kildeer. For more information, visit tacosgtogo.com or call 847-847-1056.
According to Diaz, if you want to make more-authentic Mexican dishes you need to study your Mexican peppers. Start easy with a few salsas. Here’s a quick crib sheet:

SALSA VERDE
10 tomatillos
2 whole jalapeños
1 medium garlic clove Avocado (optional)
Boil all ingredients together for 5 minutes of a hard boil or until soft to the touch. (Careful when you touch them, as they will be hot!) Let them cool for at least 15 minutes before blending all together with about ¼ teaspoon salt to taste. Adjust if needed. Add 10 chopped cilantro springs to the salsa—or cubed fresh avocado for extra flavor and texture.
SPICY RED SMOKY SALSA
10 whole tomatillos
4 whole guajillo peppers
2 whole Chile de árbol
1 whole garlic clove, roasted ¼ teaspoon of salt or to taste 1 cup of boiling water
In a hot frying pan, roast the various chiles, garlic, and the tomatillos on all sides. Place peppers in a bowl and pour water over them to hydrate. Place tomatillos, roasted garlic cloves, and hydrated peppers in blender. Add salt and blend until smooth, adding more salt if needed. Pair with tacos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, or chips.

It is a rarity to find the name William Avery Rockefeller coupled with The Grateful Dead. Yet, The Grateful Dead’s lyric “too much of everything is just enough” is an apt description of The Point—the former Great Camp of William Avery Rockefeller II and now a Relais & Chateaux property located in New York’s Adirondack Mountains.
Do you wish to have every whim answered? Do you wish to have every need met? Fortunately for you, The Point awaits. The 11 guest rooms spread across four beautifully secluded log buildings are furbished with elegant fabrics and classic furnishings that epitomize rustic elegance. Views of glittering Upper Saranac Lake and the rugged Adirondack Mountains can be enjoyed from the guestrooms’ expansive private terraces.
Romantics will rejoice to hear The Boathouse suite is winterized, allowing it to be booked year round. A 1,200-square-foot suite that hovers over the lake and features a wraparound porch, The Boathouse has been recognized as one of “The Top 100 Suites” by Elite Traveler. It is no wonder The Boathouse is the property’s most coveted room.
Guests experience the Point’s exceptional level of service before even setting foot on the 75-acre property. Solicitous emails sent before arrival to establish food and activity preferences end with the phrase “we are always here for you.” As the food and activity options are nearly limitless, it is wise to give some thought to these preferences. Summertime is the time for water lovers to visit The Point. Boating adventures can be as intimate as a picnic for two on a private island reached either by kayak or electric Budsin boat. Guests can enjoy the bounty of these seasonal ingredients in enticing dishes served at the Great Hall or in a variety of outdoor locations on property like a lakeside gourmet picnic.
While some may regard hiking as a questionable vacation pursuit, The Point transforms this rugged activity into a sublime adventure. The trail starts at a warming hut stocked with hiking boots in all sizes, veers through a forest trail thoughtfully dotted with water bottles and ends at a wooden cabin dubbed “Camp David.” On a cool day, a roaring fire in the cabin’s stone fireplace greets hikers as they sit down to a casual lunch featuring regional delicacies like Maine lobster rolls and pea shoot salad. A bottle of Hudson Baby Bourbon, a cult favorite among whiskey drinkers, sits as the center of the self-serve bar. Discovering the property’s other self-serve bars could be described as an activity in its own right. With bars tucked away in locations ranging from the antique-filled Reindeer Room to the cozy billiard room in The Pub to the luxurious lean-to outfitted with overstuffed kilim pillows and oriental rugs at the bonfire site, cocktail hour can easily morph into cocktail hours.
The options for dining are as equally varied as the options for imbibing. While breakfast and lunch are delightful and may be enjoyed anytime and anywhere, The Point’s dinners are unparal-

SENIORS AND CHRONIC PAIN
WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221203150725-edcde248a4d63551865811c34df8efb7/v1/c4a642c80a1e827f74482e2a07604b8e.jpeg)
Chronic pain is considered a serious medical problem. In seniors it can debilitate a patient and create other medical problems, complicating the situation and creating worsening prognosis and outcomes. The condition often leads to complications beyond your physical symptoms, such as new or worsened depression, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221203150725-edcde248a4d63551865811c34df8efb7/v1/0ab913aeac799730eb97b8b59feb8627.jpeg)
According to the CDC, almost 40 million Americans over the age of 65 are affected by some version of chronic pain. Females are affected more than males. It’s the most common reason someone seeks out medical attention. Mobility, depression, and insomnia are three common problems that occur in chronic pain patients.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221203150725-edcde248a4d63551865811c34df8efb7/v1/6debd4bd3bcde2503f51e3991fd1d8fa.jpeg)
Often in seniors we care for, chronic pain causes a lack of mobility creating issues such as high fall risk and muscle weakness from disuse. For these problems physical therapy and occupational therapy are important to implement early on, to prevent issues like hip fractures and irreversible weakness.
Depression is another frequent issue that occurs with chronic pain. When there is no hope for improvement and a reduction in someone’s independent abilities, it frequently causes a depressed mood. Fortunately, there are many anti-depressant medications and sometimes these medications can also help with masking the pain. Side effects can include drowsiness, small amount of weight gain, and reduced libido.
Insomnia is a frequent problem in patients with chronic pain. Low back pain like spinal stenosis is a frequent cause of insomnia, as positioning causes acute intense pain, waking the person up from a deep sleep. It’s often very difficult to get in a position even to fall asleep. There are various sleep remedies that can help but usually reducing the pain level is the main focus on improving sleep.
There are various medications that help with chronic pain. Over-the-counter medications include acetaminophen and ibupro fen. This can be very helpful with mild to moderate pain. There are potential side effects based on where these medications are metabolized in the body. Otherwise, both are very well tolerated.
Cox-2 inhibitors, anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, and opioids are other options for medication management.
The surgical options depend on what the exact etiology is causing the pain. Seniors with high-risk medical problems could prohibit them from having a needed procedure. Other less invasive procedures include joint injections, epidural injections, and radiofrequency procedures.
No two chronic pain patients are alike and require compassion, care, and a proper treatment plan based on their physician’s and specialist’s recommendations.

WHY GUMS MATTER
A complex plaque of bacteria builds up in the brain in this region and the “gum disease” bacteria are among the findings. It is thought that the bacteria act to destroy that area of the brain in the way they destroy gums and bone around teeth.
We have known for years that gum disease increases your risk of cardio vascular disease. The same “gum disease” bacteria flow through the blood stream and attach themselves to the arteries and valves in and around your heart. With time, the plaque builds and closes off the arteries and gives rise to the threat of cardio-vascular disease.
WORDS BYAlzheimer’s disease has touched the lives of so many. Researchers have not been able to clearly define a cause and effect for it. Despite the billions that have been spent on research, thousands of people are diag nosed with the disease each year and are given little hope for a cure.
A recent study has given researchers new hope in getting to bottom of this complex disease. Bacteria that cause gum disease have been isolated in the area of the brain that is believed to be causing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221203150725-edcde248a4d63551865811c34df8efb7/v1/4d0dc8d4dcaf058e94a11690abbd003b.jpeg)
Past research has shown a link of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s. Researchers knew that the two were correlated but did not have answers as to why. With the new information being brought to light, the studies are following the possibility of gum disease being the causative factor for both. In other words, the cardio vascular disease does not cause Alzheimer’s but rather gum disease is the contributing factor to both cardio-vascular disease and Alzheimer’s.
There is a lot left to do in this area of research. If future find ings can show causation instead of correlation of gum disease and Alzheimer’s, then research will begin on methods to help stop or cure this horrible disease. In the meantime, you can help protect yourself by flossing every day and having your gums checked for gum disease by your dentist. Any sign of bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth is usually an indication of the presence of gum disease.

Form Follows Function at Luxury Men’s Clothier Phillips Men’s Wear
75 years of dressing the community.
WORDS BY MEGAN WEISBERG ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKOmenswear, the Phillips brothers launched what would now be considered a pop-up as they began to bring fabric swatches from Chicago’s Hart Schaffner & Marx to their offices—leaving out swatches for colleagues to stop by, select, and write down their measurements for. The brothers would then take that to the city, have the suits made, and return them to their colleagues at Jewel. Soon they had such a booming demand, that Jewel asked them to find a new location—which they did starting Phillips Men’s Wear in downtown Barrington 75 years ago. In 1974, Yankala purchased the men’s wear store and continues to dress the community in the elegant tradition of men’s stores in London and Paris.
“Historically, we’ve been a business store where we dress this demographic appropriately for the events in their life. Whether that be a gala, social gathering, traveling, or doing business internationally,” says Yankala. “What we do follows what our demographic does, reconfiguring to fit the lifestyle that our customer leads.”
“We are seeing new classifications that are now mainstays, like athleisure wear and fabrics that are wash and dry, easy to put on and wear in the home office, and to run an errand in downtown Barrington,” says Yankala. “And there’s been an entire change in shoe wardrobes.” Clients who previously only had dress shoes for suits and loafers for sport coats, now need a brand-new classification of shoe to wear with the athleisure wear. “We now carry 19 different styles of shoes including a new classification—the soft sole shoe which is based on a running platform. It’s called a ‘cross court’ as the shoe can be worn across town or across the basketball court and is needed for a blue jean or athleisure wear bottom.”
“A lot of our customers used to travel to Europe for their leisure time, now they’re staying put and have more time to play golf—an area of classification that increased for us incredibly.”
“I
’ve always had an interest in architecture,” shares Peter Yankala, owner of Phillips Men’s Wear in Barrington. “The phrase of American architect, Louis Sullivan, ‘form follows function’ applies to our day-to-day business model.” Which, like everything else, was thrown a curve ball this past year. So, what now?

Founded in 1946 by the Phillips brothers who were born and raised in Barrington, Phillips Men’s Wear is a specialty retailer consisting of clothiers, tailors, and stylists. The Phillips brothers originally were accountants for Jewel—who in 1910 had opened a headquarters in Barrington in order to more effectively broker with the neighboring farms to place their produce in Jewel’s stores. Noting the difficulty in traveling to downtown Chicago for new
As custom garment makers, Phillips has seen an absolute explosion in the wedding market, with their tailors completing as many custom tuxedos in a month as they typically do in a year. “The event itself has become so much more elevated as its an opportunity to get dressed up and go way over the top.” There’s a proprietary nature to how one dresses and uses style to stand out. “In 2017-2018, the trend was to wear business suits to a wedding, now it’s a tuxedo as there may not be another event to get dressed up for in the near future.”
One thing’s for sure, as their customer’s lifestyle evolves, Phillips Men’s Wear is there to meet their lifestyle needs. “As we see changes in the market,” says Yankala “we adapt.”
Phillips Men’s Wear is located at 123 East Station Street in Barrington. For more information, or to make an appointment call 847-381-1282.
