wo important rules I advise buyers to follow are: 1. Sellers want to sell to someone who likes their home. Don’t blow it by cutting down features of a house in an attempt to negotiate a better deal. Trust me. Sellers know what the pros and cons are of their house, they don’t want to hear about it! 2. Please refrain from writing a love letter to the sellers telling them why they should sell to you/your family. Most brokerages are not allowing these letters to be seen by the sellers, as there are legal ramifications involved when presenting the letters.

he summer of 2021 has been a hot one for both the weather and the housing market! In June of 2020, the Barrington Area had 77 closed sales for single family homes. In June 2021 alone, the Barrington Area had a 90.9% increase month-over-month in closed sales for single family homes with 147 home closings.

S

ellers, now is the time to make sure your home is priced right. Though the market is still active, you may start to see offers come in slower and offer prices lowering as well. Make sure your agent is doing the proper research to price your home correctly. One way to do this is to complete a Comparative Market Analysis, or a CMA. This analysis compares similar properties in the area that have recently sold, allowing you to better gauge what your home may sell for. Your agent can create this analysis, and then you can work together to decide on a price. Most importantly, your broker needs to know as much as possible about what pending properties are under contract for, especially to share with appraisers.

A

ppraisals can go one of two ways. You want your home to appraise out, and if you’re working with a good agent, your home should appraise out. Make sure you are working with an agent who is armed to the teeth with solid,

he languid summer days and nights are slowly coming to a close, however, I for one plan to soak up every last drop of the season’s warmth and laid-back vibe. As the weeks of August slowly tick by, I’ll be doing my best to embrace the mantra of Country vs. Town’s Sarah Kutka: “Live life in the moment because everything else is uncertain.” The meaningful work of Barrington Giving Day’s Back to School event is a story sure to inspire you as they tirelessly work to ensure all children in our community are ready to return to school this year. And take a look at the launch party of Lyon’s Way, a new initiative from the Lyon Family Foundation in our Living & Giving section. Moving to our feature stories, in Ace of Art, Barrington’s Matt Gabler dives into the abstract art he creates and his deployment of unique mediums—including fire—to convey emotions through his works. The art

is stunning in its beauty and serves as an escape for people of all ages. Lake Barrington’s Therese Van Ryne used the extra time during the COVID-19 lockdown to pen her first book. The head of global public relations, thought leadership, and advocacy for Zebra Technologies wrote children’s story, Zippy’s Special Gift—read all about it in her story. In these pages find the fashion-forward must-have items for rounding out summer looks and savoring every last moment of warmth, including the perfect picnic recipe to take with you on the boat, to the sand, or right outside your door. Begin to plan a trip to the storied shores of Nantucket Island, off Massachusett’s coast, with our travel feature by Lilly Wehman. And I hope you enjoy this month’s Luxury Offerings with beautiful properties in Miami, Palm Beach, and right here in Barrington.

UP FRONT CULTURE, MURMURS & STYLE

Barrington Giving Day Back to School Event For more than 60 years, nonprofit organization, Barrington Giving Day has benefited the more than 900 families (including over 1,700 children) in the Barrington area who either qualify for the Free and Reduced Meal Program through Barrington Community Unit District 220 or have been hit by unexpected hardships, including homelessness. Under the leadership of Executive Director, Dori Squires-Hough, Barrington Giving Day is composed 100 percent of volunteers who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of those in need. Barrington Giving Day is hosting its annual BACK TO SCHOOL event August 13 and 14 which is hosted by St. Matthew Lutheran Church. At this event families can select gym shoes, clothing, backpacks, school supplies, headphones, and other much needed items for their children in order to have a successful start to their school year. The COVID-19 pandemic forced Barrington Giving Day to reevaluate how they could serve their guests while complying with health and safety guidelines. A new online event registration and scheduling process was implemented, offering shopping times for families to limit event capacity and allow for social distancing. For

BC_0821_Main_SoftProof.indd 21

the Back to School event, families will be given the opportunity to attend the event and select items for their family or complete a questionnaire and have a personal shopper select the items for them. As a way to help families and businesses that were impacted by the pandemic, Barrington Giving Day also created a home delivery program. Funded by sponsors and a grant from Barrington Area Community Foundation, Barrington Giving Day provided 12 weeks of home deliveries to 420 families including family meals prepared by local restaurants, essential relief kits, and non-perishable pantry goods. Barrington Giving Day is also available throughout the year to provide support to families and children experiencing homelessness or other dire needs. Working together, Barrington Giving Day and District 220 are able to help these individuals on short notice and reduce the burden they are experiencing. HISTORIC FRIDA KAHLO EXHIBITION AT THE COLLEGE OF DUPAGE The Cleve Carney Museum of Art and the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage will host one of the largest private collections of original artwork by Frida Kahlo in a multifaceted exhibition entitled Frida Kahlo: Timeless. The exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation of Kahlo’s work displayed in the Chicago area in over 40 years. The 26-piece collection, on loan from the Museo Dolores Olmedo, features an array of oil paintings and works on paper spanning the life of Kahlo, a Mexican artist foundational to the 20th century art historical canon. “Frida was very much a person of the people and this intimate, educational showcase brings works never before seen in the Chicago area to DuPage County,” said exhibit Executive Director and McAninch Arts Center Director Diana Martinez. “This exhibition is one of a kind and is not traveling elsewhere. In addition to the 26 original artworks that will be on view, we have developed a historical timeline, display of over 100 photographic images from the artist’s life, a poetry garden and children’s area which enrich the viewing experience.” The exhibition runs until September 6. BOBBI BROWN STARTS JONES ROAD BEAUTY Jones Road was founded by makeup artist Bobbi Brown on the philosophy that the world doesn’t need more beauty products. It needs better beauty products. Clean, strategic, high-grade formulations that work on every skin type and tone—and that are as simple to use as they are to master. Jones Road is a lifetime of beauty knowledge, distilled. “All of my endeavors start from my attempt to bridge the gap between what Is and what could be,” says Brown. “I’m a person who is constantly taking mental notes, following the threads of my curiosity, asking questions. Four years ago, after I left Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, one of those questions was: Why can’t I find makeup products that are both clean and high-performance—that don’t sacrifice one for the other?” Jones Road was born from a search for something that didn’t yet exist. “Because it didn’t exist, I had to create it,” says Brown. “What I wanted was the makeup equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife: easy, cool, multi-purpose products that could be used to nail any look, whether it be no-makeup makeup or something with more drama.” For more information, visit jonesroadbeauty.com. Books! I am constantly looking for inspiration as well as finding great training material for our team. They always wonder how I fit reading into an already busy schedule of family, work, and the two horses I compete as an amateur. I vision cast for our marketing team and right now am reading Unleash Impossible by Samantha Stone. I also recently had a great consultation with business coach Martin Holland who turned me on to his book The Profit Problem—They Say I Make Money So Why Don’t I Have Any. No matter how much success we may be blessed with, I never stop looking for new ideas to teach and grow.

Right now, I am completing a 16week online audio/visual program called Dressage Rider Training. It is an exercise program that I have come to love that includes tai chi, strength training, and yoga. I am actually a hunter/jumper rider, but dressage training is foundational to all great competitive riding as the workout is focused on building core strength and balance. I find that when I am healthy and competing, my drive in our business is just as intense and I am more ready to take on my day when I am feeling good and not constantly reminding myself of my advancing age.

As the head of marketing for Advance Design, I am on social media all the time. I love following leaders in our industry, especially when it comes to design trends. We post our work on both Instagram and Facebook, which is the best place to really get to know us because we feature current design trends and project photos, sometimes during construction which is fun. If I am not chasing design trends, I am posting pictures of my horses, my daughter riding, or my son and his dad who race high speed karts all around the country. Our family is very busy— when we are not working hard, we are definitely playing hard!

A true Southern belle, Sarah Kutka grew up in Murray, Kentucky before finding her way to Barrington. After graduating from Murray State University, Kutka moved to Chicago and is now a working mother living with her husband and three children (Bella, Jack, and Hollis), along with the family’s Maltese, Sugar. Kutka’s children are very involved in dance, tumbling, baseball, football, and soccer—which keeps her on the move. An active member of the Barrington Junior Women’s Club, Kutka enjoys running outside to stay fit during the warmer months of the year. Mantra? Live life in the moment because everything else is uncertain B e s t g room in g tip? Always moisturize and take care of your skin. My grandmother had a skin care routine every morning and night and she always looked beautiful Guilty pleasure? Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream Favorite foods? There are so many different foods that I love. Being from the South I enjoy a lot of Southern comfort food such as Southern style green beans or collard green dishes. Every time I go back to my home state of Kentucky or somewhere in the South, I am blown away by how fantastic the food is Music you love? I honestly have a variety of music I like; I grew up with music always being around me. My dad loved to play guitar and sing. My mom always had a radio, MTV, VH1, or CMT on when I was growing up. I love everything from classic

rock, alternative, 80s and 90s country, gospel to classical piano. My husband thinks it’s funny how I will immediately know a song, artist, and year of release Best advice ever given to you? Always stay motivated and focus on the goals you set Best advice you’ve given? Make sure to be yourself and don’t always try to please others Earliest memory? My grandparents taking me fishing on Kentucky Lake when I was 3 years old. I remember my grandmother packing a lunch for us and riding in my grandfather’s little boat. They let me bait the hook and help me catch a baby fish. When you wake up, you? Look at my calendar to see what the agenda is for the day Before bed, you? Do my nightly skin care routine and maybe watch some mindless TV to wind down What’s on your bookshelf? Wonderful Tonight by Pattie Boyd, Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon. I love reading autobiographies You can’t live without? My family of course, and mascara Love to escape to? Charleston, South Carolina. I fell in love with the atmosphere of this charming city Advice you would give to your younger self? Don’t worry so much about the future. God will lead you to exactly to where you need to be

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? I love wearing bright colors and pretty prints. I have never been afraid of wearing something bold. If I am running my kids to their activities, I am usually wearing something comfortable, normally workout clothes. If I am having a night out with my husband or friends, it is usually a cute top, maybe with a blazer, and a pair of skinny, or wide, leg jeans Can’t leave the house without? The color of the day lipstick Transportation? SUV or Sedan Driving music? Always Sirus XM. The Spectrum, Dave Matthews Radio, Prime Country, The Blend, and The Bridge Place to eat? Shakou, Francesca’s, ZaZa’s, and Mago Shop? G&G Boutique, Luxe Warehouse, and Tattered Tiques Best thing about the country? The family-friendly community we live in Worst thing about the country? Others can be settled entirely outside of court.” A realist, she knows there are also plenty of positives. “Just getting the basic information and understanding of the court system can be empowering. “Bernie’s Book Bank has been a strategic charitable partner of Zebra Technologies long before this book came to life,” she says. “Through the advocacy side of my role at Zebra, I lead our global philanthropy and volunteer program through which we contribute time, treasure, and talent in our local communities. I had the great fortune of participating in a book distribution at a local elementary school with Bernie’s Book Bank prior to the pandemic, and I can honestly say it was one of the best days of my life. To see the excitement in the children’s faces when they opened their bright green bags and looked at their new books is something I’ll never forget.” A leading provider of quality books to under-served children in the Chicago area, Bernie’s Book Bank sources, processes, and distributes quality new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership. “Before the pandemic, we had meetings on site in the organization’s Lake Bluff facility,” Van Ryne explains. “We even hosted a global town hall that many of our employees based in our Lincolnshire headquarters attended in person while our other 8,000 employees located around the world enjoyed it virtually.” As part of Zebra’s support of Bernie’s Book Bank, the company has donated its latest scanning technology to help increase the efficiency of its book sorting and distribution. This operational improvement is the same impact Zebra is making with its customers globally. “Watching how we work with Bernie’s Book Bank made me really think about the word ‘partner,’ and the relationships we build through our outreach,” she says. “What can happen as a result is so powerful.” And so is selling more than 2,000 books, which at press time is exactly what Van Ryne has done. Zebra agreed to match this number as a donation to Bernie’s Book Bank, in addition to the proceeds raised. Van Ryne was also a guest author at the Storybook Festival Bernie’s hosted in May where she read her book aloud. “This whole process has been so amazing—from working with the editors and illustrator and Mascot Publishing to doing a 28-stop virtual book tour,” she adds. “And I’m so grateful to the leadership of Zebra Technologies for encouraging me to express my creativity and showcase our company’s culture in this way. It’s not unique for us to be this creative. The values that Zippy espouses in this book are the very same values we live every day when we engage with our customers and partners and serve our communities.” With the success of Zippy’s Special Gift, there is an audible clamor for a sequel. “There has been so much support for this project—both from Zebra and my family,” Van Ryne says. “Zippy has so many great stories to share. It’s a definite possibility.” Zippy’s Special Gift can be purchased on Amazon and through other online retailers.

A

ll it took for Barrington artist Matt Gabler to return to painting was the itch one day to alter one of his old pieces, the one he created at age 17. The best way to describe the hand painting? “A green blob,” Gabler, now 23, says. Gabler had taken a break from art, in part because he was too hard on himself and thought his work was south of substandard. The green blob stared at him. Gabler colored in spots using blue and yellow hues and surrounded the painting with red paint. He then stepped back and assessed the multicolored creation. “It looked like a woman consoling a man,” recalls Gabler, who attended Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox and Lockport Township High School before taking business and accounting classes at Harper College in Palatine. “It made me cry. That’s when I realized, ‘Okay, I can do this.’ So I kept painting.” Gabler’s decision to hibernate his easel and art tools for more than a winter puzzled his mother, Sheila, other loved ones, and friends. “We all wondered why,” says Sheila, whose late father, funeral home owner Matt Lamb (of Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn), also owned eight art studios worldwide and was a gifted painter himself. “I love my son’s work. It resembles, in many ways,

my father’s paintings. Many of my son’s paintings feature hidden faces—faces you notice only after turning the painting upside down. My favorite painting is the one that started as a boat; Matt turned that into a group of people at a table.” “Whatever he puts on canvas,” she adds, “is meaningful. It still surprises me what goes from his head to what appears on canvas. I’m thrilled that he’s doing what he loves, and that he came back in full force as an artist.” Gabler’s art genre is abstract expressionism. Sadness, happiness, grief, hope … pick an emotion, any emotion. Gabler has likely depicted it on a canvas. And he doesn’t limit forming each emotion to a paintbrush. Gabler has used a knife to splatter paint. He has set more than one piece of artwork on fire. Yes, fire. But the flames didn’t destroy the pieces. They enlivened them. “I attack my paintings, and, like my grandfather, I want people to touch them and feel their layers,” says Gabler, who was inspired by one of Grandpa’s floral abstracts, in which the flower in the painting appears to be melting. “Sometimes stabbing a canvas is better than painting one. I’ve used water as well, to create puddles, to show a dreamlike quality.” JWC | COUNTRY 39

For Those That Are Shy

Sheila fully understands her son’s unique style. Think of a runaway train. Matt Gabler, the artist, has a similar unstoppable energy. “Matt beats up his paintings, because life sometimes beats all of us up, right?” Sheila says. “People gravitate to parts of Matt’s paintings and pull out what they need. Matt has a gift for reaching people through ways other than words. His art is healing.” His art also doubles as an escape for people of all ages in a pandemic-weary world. Notes a private collector on Gabler’s website, (gabler.work), “The paintings add a sort of youthful feel to our collection in a world that is so rigid and uptight.” In late spring Gabler planned to submit his artwork for consideration at summer and fall exhibitions and in competitions. But not before relying on his trusty panel of local “judges,” namely family

members, friends, and his girlfriend of nearly two years, Olivia. “They’re all great because they’re completely honest with me whenever I ask them what they think of my paintings,” says Gabler, whose stepfather, Michael, owns Michael Miller & Co., a jeweler in Barrington. “I’m close with my stepdad. He’s always backed me, and he continues to tell me, ‘Never sell

yourself short. Keep pushing.’” “My paintings astonish him. There used to be paintings of landscapes all around the house. Now there are about 25-30 of mine, abstracts, with colors exploding in most of them.” The artist is a philanthropist, too, having donated art proceeds to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s Gateway for Cancer Research Foundation. Matt’s father, Joe, died of brain cancer five years ago. “My son is a self-starter,” Sheila says. “You never have to tell him to do anything. He sets high standards for himself and meets them. He’s made mission statements for himself. Matt knows where he wants to be five years from now and 10 years from now.” For more information, visit galber.work.

CHICKPEA SALAD SANDWICHES RECIPE BY JEANINE DONOFRIO

S

kip the chicken salad and make chickpea salad instead! This picnic-perfect creamy sandwich filling contrasts perfectly with crisp veggies and soft baguette. Prep the chickpea mixture up to 3 days in advance and keep it on hand for lunches all week.

CHICKPEA SALAD

• • • • • • • •

1½ cups cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 tablespoons tahini 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ½ garlic clove 1 teaspoon capers 1 green onion, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

FOR THE SANDWICHES

Serves: 3-4 • handful of thin green beans, trimmed • 1 soft baguette, sliced in half • 8 to 10 Kalamata olives, pitted and sliced in half • thinly sliced red onion, rinsed and dried • vegan mayo (or regular mayo), for spreading • ¼ English cucumber, thinly sliced • 1 radish, thinly sliced • 6 to 8 fresh basil leaves • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

MAKE THE CHICKPEA SALAD: In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini, Dijon mustard, garlic, capers, green onions, cilantro, lemon juice, and pinches of salt and pepper. Pulse until combined, but do not puree. Season to taste. Blanch the green beans. Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil and place a bowl of ice water nearby. Drop the green beans into the boiling water for 1½ minutes, then scoop into the ice water to stop the cooking process. Once cool, drain, pat dry, and chop into 1-inch pieces.

ASSEMBLE THE SANDWICHES: Spread the chickpea salad on one side of the baguette. Press the chopped green beans into the chickpea salad and top with the olives and red onion slices. Spread of layer of mayo on the other half of the baguette and top with the sliced cucumbers, radishes, and basil. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Press together, slice, and enjoy! Jeanine Donofrio is the creator of Love & Lemons (loveandlemons.com) and author of two bestselling cookbooks, The Love & Lemons Cookbook and Love & Lemons Every Day. Her veggie-centric recipes celebrate how nourishing, fun, and delicious cooking with seasonal, plant-based ingredients can be. JWC | COUNTRY 46

ooking to live on island time while staying in the States? Head out East and visit Nantucket, a tiny island located off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The island is 14 miles in length and three and a half miles wide. It is not easy to get to, but the overwhelming amount of generations of summer visitors speaks for itself. The charming family oriented island is worth the travel time. Travel by plane into Nantucket Memorial Airport (arguably the cutest airport) via a quick layover in New York, New Jersey, or Boston. Do not forget to pick up quite possibly the trendiest airport code bumper sticker sporting the ACK acronym. Keep an eye out for a direct flight from ORD to ACK offered every so often by United Airlines. As another option, you can enjoy a quick passenger ferry ride from a number of different ports along the East Coast. The island is home to several breathtaking and convenient bike paths making bike rental essential. Blend in with the locals and rent a Jeep Wrangler to help you successfully navigate around the island. A highlight of your trip will include picking up a beach permit, packing a cooler, deflating your tires, and heading out onto Great Point for a stunning sunset or lighthouse excursion. To elevate your experience, rent a Boston Whaler from Nantucket Boat Basin to explore the sea and check out the local oyster farms. Once a thriving whaling capital of the world, Nantucket is now a designated National Historic Landmark keeping the town and homes uniquely manicured. The cobblestoned streets and unpainted cedar shingled buildings are what give Nantucket its irresistible charm. As for lodging on the island, many visitors choose to rent one of the hundreds of homes offered by Airbnb or Vrbo. Other options include

The Wauwinet Hotel, which is also home to one of the nation’s most acclaimed restaurants, TOPPER’S. Famous for their oysters harvested just 300 yards away, TOPPER’S is a must regardless of where you choose to stay. For a stay closer to town, The White Elephant, is a luxurious resort located alongside the historical harbor. You can also escape to Sconset and stay in a private cottage at The Summer House. One of the most romantic dinner destinations on the island, The Chanticleer, located in Sconset is perfect for an intimate night out. For a bigger party, book one of their personal dining rooms for an unforgettable night with family and friends. The show stopping menu will leave A private entrance to the sea, Nantucket.

WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS Activities of daily living (ADLs) is a term used by healthcare professionals to refer to the basic self-care tasks an individual does on a day-to-day basis. These activities are fundamental in caring for oneself and maintaining independence. As a physician, I assess the individual’s ability or inability to perform ADLs as a way of measuring their functional status, especially that of older adults or those with disabilities. Common ADLs include: functional mobility, such as the ability to walk and transfer in and out of a chair or bed; personal hygiene, oral care and grooming, including skin and hair care; showering and/or bathing; toileting, which includes getting on/off the toilet and cleaning oneself; dressing, which includes selecting appropriate attire and putting it on; and self-feeding. Often the seniors my group helps take care of, have certain limitations with their ADLs, forcing the family to move them to a senior living community. This can cause stress and/or anxiety to the senior but also the families involved, as the senior feels their independence is being taken away. More advanced ADLs include: housekeeping, laundry and other home care chores; driving; money management; meal preparation; moving/ changing residences; shopping for groceries and other necessities; medication management; and using the telephone or computer. SENIORS AND ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING, OR ADLS

ation, there are 12 recognized ADLs necessary to live in co-occupation with others: home establishment and maintenance; meal preparation, including clean-up; care of others, including being able to select and supervise caregivers; communication management, includes telephone and computer usage; financial management; management and maintenance of health and health-related issues; shopping; maintaining and observing religious practices; child rearing; community mobility; pet care; and safety procedures and emergency responses. Physicians, geriatric social workers, rehabilitation specialists and others in senior care often evaluate a person’s ability to perform ADLs as part of a functional assessment. Difficulties performing these tasks may signal cognitive decline. Occasionally seniors are able to remain in their homes with the assistance of caregivers or home health services. We advise all families to address any foreseeable decline, to prevent health related issues. These decisions are always tailored for the individual and their families, based on the unique circumstances. Reach out to your trusted health care professional early and have the conversation to create the best outcome for your loved ones.

SMILE Why accreditation matters when choosing a cosmetic dentist. WORDS BY JAMES T. GAVRILOS

Think about the ways we select a dentist. Some will ask a friend or neighbor. Others will go online and check reviews. Some will even respond to advertising that comes in the mail. But even with all of these methods, we cannot be sure how good their work is. This is where accreditation comes in. Imagine that your dentist’s work could be evaluated by the top dentists in the world. They would have to submit their work for evaluation and it would have to pass the highest of quality standards. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has a program that performs this exact type of screening. For 35 years, the AACD has offered this credentialing program.

Accreditation serves to set the standard for excellence in cosmetic dentistry. Achieving accredited status from the AACD requires dedication to continuing education, careful adherence to the protocol, and a resolve to produce exceptional dentistry. Over the past 35 years, thousands of dentists have attempted to complete the process but only 400 have been able to meet the standard. Of these 400, only 200 in the world still practice dentistry today. The process begins with a written examination. If the candidate passes the written part, they can then start the clinical portion. This involves completing five different reconstructive procedures that are pre-determined by the association. Each case is photographed under high magnification and also requires a written report. Once the documentation is complete, the case is submitted for evaluation. After the clinical portions are passed, a final oral examination is conducted along with a review of all the clinical photography and reporting. Only after passing all of these steps does the dentist receive his accredited status. When you are ready to look for a new dentist, let AACD help you. Go to aacd.com and select the “Find a Dentist” tab. You will be asked to enter your location and you will be given a list of the dentists in your area. Keep in mind that less than 1 percent of the world’s dentists are accredited so you may have to travel to get to one. This first step will be a lot more reliable in getting the quality work that you need than asking a neighbor, going through online reviews or responding to a coupon. Dr. James T. Gavrilos is accredited with AACD. His office is located at 129 Park Avenue in Barrington. For more information, call 847-3814040 or visit barringtondentist.com.

ALECIA FIGHTS TWO BATTLES Changing the Illinois Health Code

A

WORDS BY LILLY WEHMAN ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

fter completing her youngest daughter’s junior year college move-in last summer, 53-year old Hawthorn Woods resident Alecia Mandal was hit with a wave of fatigue that felt nearly impossible to rebound from. Mandal, a wife to oncologist Rob Mandal and mother of three (Sophie, 25, Nick, 24 and Lauren, 21) decided to go in for some blood work just to be safe. On August 27, 2020 Alecia was diagnosed with colon cancer. “I was in complete shock because I had zero symptoms,” says Mandal, an oncology nurse 25 years ago. She places a huge emphasis on being a self-advocate, acting with perseverance and listening to one’s body when it came to her diagnosis. Soon after, Mandal connected with her doctor Sheetal M. Kircher from Northwestern Medicine to create a treatment plan. “I must first attribute my faith. I got the right doctor and incredible people working in my corner,” said Mandal. Mandal also attributes immunotherapy to saving her life. Due to the aggressive degree of her cancer and her PPO Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, she qualified for biomarker testing. This type of genetic testing is crucial when creating a personalized treatment plan and unfortunately is only offered to certain people who qualify with insurance. The biomarker testing opened the door to immunotherapy, which has allowed for Mandal to live a higher quality of life. Immunotherapy is different from chemotherapy as it works within your immune system to fight off the cancer, is less time consuming

and has fewer debilitating side effects. “Looking at me, you would never know I have cancer,” says Mandal, who can be found playing tennis, riding the Peloton, and going for walks. Mandal believes it is her God-given vocation to have a voice for those who do not. While she was fortunate enough to qualify for biomarker testing, she realized how many people in her shoes may not be afforded the same type of care because of their insurance plans. In the spring of 2021, Mandal and her doctor were approached by government affiliate Shana Crews, asking if they would like to testify on the basis of the Illinois insurance code. On March 25, Mandal told her story via Zoom and the Illinois House Bill 1779 unanimously passed the house and later the Senate. The law, which is still waiting to be passed by Governor Pritzker, essentially says that health insurance amended, delivered, issued, or renewed on or after January 1, 2022 should include coverage for biomarker testing. “That’s one fantastic thing that has come out of me getting diagnosed with cancer,” Mandal said, “That I’m hopefully helping out somebody.” Biomarker testing should be used as a first line in treatment for cancers, and in order for that to successfully happen, everyone needs to be offered equal opportunity. No matter one’s insurance status, if there is a better fitting treatment plan out there it should be available. “I think it is my passion to have a voice for those who don’t.”
