Isit a good time to buy, or a good time to sell? Perhaps it is both, depending on where you are coming from or going to. According to The Fannie Mae National Housing Survey published on September 7, 2021, 77% of respondents on the sell-side said it’s a good time to sell, while only 64% said it is a good time to buy. However, the answer may not be so black and white. Now is the time to contact your broker to determine what is happening in your market. autumn leaves of red and gold/autumn leaves start to fall”

“Given the potential to turn a huge profit on one’s home, owners certainly have many reasons to sell at this time, but there’s a catch. Unless you’re moving to a market that isn’t currently suffering from shortages or you’re planning to downsize (e.g., to sell a large suburban home to move into an urban condo), finding a new home may prove difficult and costly. So, is it a good time to sell? Yes, but likely only if you’re committed to radically changing your own living situation. Selling your current home with the hopes of landing a great deal on a similar or larger home in the same community may backfire.”

In real estate, as you work your way up the “food chain” in price, you’ll often find that people have a wide range of motivating reasons to sell their homes. Many of the sellers I work with don’t necessarily need

to sell, but perhaps want to take advantage of the market conditions and get top dollar for their homes. This is often the case in the higher price ranges. In these cases, the seller may not need to resize. Your real estate agent should be aware of the current market conditions and what that may mean for you as a seller.

As I write this article in late September, I believe October will prove to be a good time to sell. Kids are back in school, and there is still time before the holiday season; it would come as no surprise to me if we start to see more sellers emerge as we head further into the Fall season.

I’m thrilled to share with you in our October issue a fanciful fashion spread, Horse & Glory, in which fall fashion looks are paired with beautiful equestrian mounts. Delightful and beautiful, it’s sure to get you excited about the changing season. In this issue, we also sit down with Jacey Silverberg, founder of Lake Barrington’s newest boutique, The Sélectionner, and learn how the store came about and how she curates the gorgeous finds in her store. In light of comedian Jim Gaffigan’s return to Barrington this past month, he shares with us a reflection on his childhood in Barrington in One Last Thing.

It truly is the end of an era with the pass ing of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch who was widely beloved. Her devotion to service was exemplary. And while many of us are familiar with the Bar rington Junior Women’s Club, in Seasons of Giving we take an in-depth look at the per petual and countless philanthropic efforts in our community that are always underway with this outstanding organization.

Look behind the doors of a stunning custom property in Barrington Hills, currently listed with the Kim Alden Team of Compass, Barrington, in Timeless Estate And I hope you are enjoying, as much as I

am, our newest column Country Loves which this month features Juliann Brown. Not sure about you, but I’m going to be copying Brown’s tip of keeping a running guest list in my Notes app on my iPhone to make dinner party invites a breeze.

What actress would play you in a movie? Meghan Markle. She carries herself with such elegance and grace. She is a role model to so many women by encouraging them to stand up for themselves and not letting society mold you into a version of yourself you’re not comfortable with. I love her and Harry as a power couple, too.

Who from history would you want to travel with? Princess Diana. She traveled all over the world and had such a likeability about her that I can only imagine she made for a fantastic travel partner. She wasn’t afraid to take risks as was seen in 1997 when she walked through an active landmine field in Angola to call for an international ban on landmines.

Where do you look for inspiration? There’s a quote by Coco Chanel that I embody, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” You never know where inspiration will strike.

Favorite book? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I read it in high school, and it changed my life. It’s the most American of stories, the tale of self-made success dripping in the peak of the Roaring ’20s, what’s not to love?

Most beloved cookbook? I get a lot of my recipes from Pinterest. I have a whole board dedicated to the ones I want to make and ones I have made. It’s a great way to keep all my recipes in one place. I have an air fryer and let me tell you, Pinterest has been a game changer for my meal planning.

Best dinner party hack? I keep a running guest list in my Notes app on my iPhone. I add friends, acquaintances, or anyone I meet who I’d like to attend a dinner party, this way I’m not scrambling to decide who I should invite.

What’s in your bag right now? Wallet, keys (the necessities to leave the house), a sample perfume of Baccarat Rouge 540 (to spritz on the go), YSL Nude Lavalliere (44) lipstick (the perfect hydrating lipstick), AirPod Pros, and a small notebook filled with random to-do lists, ideas that I had while driving, list of wardrobe items in need of replacing (and some that I just want)!

JULIANN LOVES

Gadget My AirPod Pros. I’m always listening to music, a podcast, or an audiobook. Scent Baccarat Rouge 540 Barrington spot Angelina’s is my favorite store to shop. I always walk away with something. Then of course Neoteca for a glass of wine, it’s a great spot to meet with friends or for a date night. Hostess gift to receive You can never go wrong with a bottle of wine. If it’s your personal favorite, even better. I love when you get something, and it’s like “I like you enough to share this with you.” Gift to give Anything that has sentimental value to that person. I sent a friend peonies for her birthday after she casually mentioned in conversation that they were her favorite.

Life would be boring if we were all the same (said to my kids just about every day) Earliest memory? BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS

the dentist has all of the information, the patient’s teeth are scanned and emailed to the laboratory for the next step. Dental technicians had to use impressions of teeth when making the blueprint for a new smile. They used wax that they added to the models of the teeth and then carved the wax into the shape of what the new teeth should look like. This was called a “wax-up.” Today we use a digital scan of the teeth and the blueprint is created digitally. The technician can merge the new design into photographs of the patient so that we can see if our cosmetic goals are being met. Once the dentist approves the digital blueprint, the technician digitally prints models and guides for the dentist to use while he is preparing the teeth for their new cosmetic restorations.

Cosmetic and restorative dentistry is like many other fields. It requires planning and execution with a talented team that can perform their individual responsibilities. One of the members of this team is the laboratory technician that helps create the blueprint for a new smile. When creating a new smile for a patient, the dentist listens to the patient’s concerns and reviews expectations with them. They will sit together and look at close-up photographs of the “before” smile and list all the changes that need to be made. This includes length, width, color, shape, translucency, position, and gum relationships. The patient is encouraged to bring photographs of smiles they like so we can use it as a communication tool. Once

This process is such an advantage for the patient. When they visit for their preparation appointment, they leave with temporary restorations that look exactly like the blueprint. They get an entire week to smile with them, eat with them and speak with them. At their one week follow up visit, we ask if there are any changes they would like to make. In most cases, the answer is no but if they wish to make a change in length or shape, we can make those changes in the temporary restorations. Once the patient approves, we scan the temporary restorations and send it to the lab so that they know exactly how to make the final porcelain restorations. This way there are no surprises and the patient ends up with the smile of their dreams.

Judging The Qualifications Of Judges

If you have been involved in a lawsuit or legal proceeding, you know how stressful it is to worry about the outcome. However, it is beneficial to understand that the legal system is set up with checks and balances. For example, if you are involved in a divorce proceeding and the court makes a ruling that you feel is inconsistent with the statutory guidelines or case law, you may appeal that decision to the appellate court. If the appellate court does not change the ruling to your liking, you may ask the Illinois Supreme Court to review the lower court’s ruling. The Illinois Supreme Court is the state’s highest court, which also supervises and administers the state’s judicial system. As part of its duties, the supreme court supervises more than 1,000 circuit court judges and more than 50 appellate court judges to ensure decisions are consistent with Illinois statutes and case law.

Judges at all three levels, the circuit court, the appellate court, and the supreme court, are appointed or elected in partisan elections.

With respect to the Illinois Supreme Court, the court consists of seven justices who are chosen by popular vote in partisan elections and serve a ten-year term. After the initial ten-year term, they are on the ballot in an uncontested, nonpartisan election to continue serving. The Illinois Supreme Court justices are elected from five

different judicial districts. Three of the Supreme Court justices are elected from the 1st District (Cook County), and one Supreme Court justice is elected from each of the other four districts.

The 2nd Judicial District includes Lake County, McHenry County, DeKalb County, Kane County, and Kendall County. On November 8, the voters of the 2nd District will be asked to elect a new supreme court justice because of the retirement of former Justice Robert R. Thomas. The two candidates for the 2nd District vacancy are Elizabeth M. Rochford (D) and Mark Curran (R).

Nobody wants to be involved in the legal process; however, if you are, you will realize how important it is to have qualified and competent individuals serving as judges. Many people, even practicing attorneys, are not fully informed about the candidates running for judge. As the 2022 election approaches, it is vital that voters know as much as possible about each candidate’s qualifications and competency, especially for the Supreme Court as it is the court of last resort for issues regarding Illinois state law.

Elizabeth Rochford is a Lake County associate judge who has been “highly recommended” by the Illinois Bar Association for the 2nd District Supreme Court vacancy.

Strategic Divorce attorney Nicholas A. Riewer and the Honorable Elizabeth Rochford explain the importance of understanding the qualifications of candidates for Illinois courts

Lake Barrington just got a whole lot chicer with its newest women’s shopping experience, The Sélectionner Boutique. Located at 22000 North Pepper Road, the boutique opened its doors this past March and specializes in contemporary brands, styles, and fits, all with a modern, yet vintage flair.

Owner Jacey Silverberg, alongside her husband, Charlie, who has an extensive wholesale and retail-distribution background, handpicks clothing designers, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces, unique jewelry, scarves, handbags, and gifts. Unlike big-box retailers, The Sélectionner Boutique’s curated collection avoids fast fashion and mass quantities, ensuring the shopper will be delighted with items that flatter their unique individuality and style.

“We look for brands and designers who are innovative and contemporary and slightly cutting-edge without being overpoweringly trendy and temporary,” explains Silverberg. Focusing on an easier silhouette, the lines carried in-store and online offer modern, yet classic, comfortable fits for everyone. Whether the woman is age 30 or 80, size extra small or extra large—and anyone and any size in between—The Sélectionner has something for

everyone.“TheSélectionner

Boutique’s customer is the woman looking for that elusive dress, a great-fitting pair of jeans, and a girl’s-night-out outfit or a date-night blouse that inspires confidence, comfort, and, most importantly, self-love, with affordable luxury and quality in mind,” Silverberg observes. With the boutique’s vintage pieces, Silverberg takes those unique prints, colors, and patterns into consideration when selecting the entire collection, curating a variety of items for the woman who prides herself on being edgy and different.

Silverberg looks for unique brands that have a story like handmade, smaller batches, women-owned, or independent. “I might find a brand or designer while on vacation or hear from one of my customers about a brand they love,” she says. “That’s the beauty of our assortments and the way we curate our collections.” Some of the more well-known brands carried at the store include Karen Kane and Liverpool sourced from Chicago-based showrooms, but some designers may be well known in another way. “We carry Calvin Tran, The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection’s breakout-star designer, for example,” she says.

Choosing Barrington for the boutique’s location was an easy decision for the Silverbergs. “We love where we live and our surrounding Barrington community,” she says. “We wanted to open quickly, and I saw this as an opportunity to collaborate locally,” recalls Silverberg. The couple turned to locally owned businesses they knew

and trusted like Cashmere & Chrome and Big Sky Custom Woodwork for design and build out of the store, imPRessions for public relations, graphic designer Lynn Kupczyk, and local clothing and jewelry designers.

The boutique’s name is derived from the French version of “curate.” “When I choose what goes in my store, I spend a lot of time thinking about the women in my life and what would make them happy and confident and showcase their personal style,” says Silverberg. “Therefore, I curate my collections with my customers’ bodies and spirits in mind.” The vibrant gold snake in the boutique’s logo alongside the store’s name symbolizes creativity, femininity, transformation, and renewal, with the slight edginess of a viper. “Because there is just a little viper in all of us,” she shares.

The feel of the store is girl’s-night in. “Lounge in our living room, browse all the pretty things, laugh with your friends, and take a confident strut around the store when you find that fantastic outfit,” says Silverberg. “We have an incredible collection of clothing and accessories, but our personalized styling service ensures a singular experience.”Shoppers can expect to be greeted by Silverberg herself and photos of Silverberg’s grandmother, Lil, who serves as the main inspiration behind the boutique’s designs and styles. “I remember being in awe of my Nana’s clothes, always mixing prints and loud colors paired with a bright red lipstick,” says Silverberg.

Her own exceptional style, which blends vintage fashion with current pieces, is what Silverberg is known for. “I’ve always been obsessed with fashion, especially vintage pieces, creatively mixing those elements with my everyday wardrobe,” she says. Often being asked where she got her own clothing, she began helping friends ease the anxiety that frequently comes with shopping.

“The Sélectionner Boutique is just starting, and we are having a blast doing it,” says Silverberg. “I’m always up for a fun collaboration, especially if it’s in support of another small or women-owned business or charity.” Silverberg and Kupczyk are launching their own line of vintage and classic tees that will be carried in-store. The label’s name, Despicable Brand Tees, was inspired by hilarious conversations with friends. Additionally, there will be a limited edition of vintage couture upcycled pieces by Kym Kainz. Looks like The Sélectionner Boutique may be Lake Barrington’s ultimate destination for taste, luxury, and humor.

Seasons of Giving

Barrington Junior Women’s Club continues its mission of taking care of the community.

As a child, Maureen Wright would drive around the Barrington area with her mom, dropping off Meals on Wheels to those who needed it. And when the well-known financial adviser moved to the Barrington area two years ago, Wright found herself craving the chance to relive those fond childhood memories all over again.

“I was looking for a way to have a ‘circle of life’ moment happen, where I was able to give back to the programs that really left an impression on me growing up,” explains Wright. “That’s why becoming a member of the Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC) seemed like a perfect fit.”Indeed, it has been a perfect fit for Wright and the thousands of women who have become members of the illustrious organization over the past 85 years, as they have come together to enhance the lives of women, children, and seniors in the Barrington area.

“I have driven so many Meals on Wheels routes with my kids,” explains Jennifer Miller, who joined BJWC over five years ago after she and her family moved to the Barrington area. “Especially pre-COVID, I would have a meal in one hand and a car seat in the other. I love that it’s something that my children can participate in. They can join me and see firsthand how we can help in the neighborhood and the community.”

Of course, BJWC’s involvement with Meals on Wheels is just one of the countless philanthropic efforts that the organization finds itself part of. In fact, their efforts have benefitted everyone from students in Sunny Hill Elementary School’s tutoring program to those living in developing counties as part of the Feed My

Starving Children organization.

“I feel so proud to be part of that group that is inspiring other people,” explains Miller, who currently serves as president of BJWC. “It’s about so much more than just the service hours. There are hours and hours of effort spent on the back end that no one even realizes to ensure that this organization continues to provide all that we can to the community.”

And come November 12, that mission will continue at BJWC’s 2022 Fall Fashion Show, which will shine the light not only on the works of high-end fashion designers but also on local boutiques such as G&G Women’s Boutique, Tru Bleu Boutique, and LUXE Wearhouse.“Wewant to bring visibility to shopping local,” adds Wright of the fashion show that will follow a “Vineyard Harvest” theme.

Past grant recipients from the annual Fall Fashion Show include Barrington Giving Day, Barrington Area Council on Aging, Lake County Haven, GiGi’s Playhouse, and Barrington Youth and Family ManyServices.ofthe organizations benefitting from the financial support of the BJWC certainly experienced their share of tough times during the pandemic, but so did the businesses that had donated to BJWC.“These businesses were suffering too,” remembers Miller. “We really had to balance the needs of what the community needed and what we wanted to do. We had to find ways to support the local businesses that had always been so supportive of us.”

Despite these somewhat tumultuous times, BJWC continued providing financial support to the community, giving out almost $10,000 in scholarships and more than $72,000 in grants just last year. In fact, BJWC made the decision to award grants throughout the year as “Especiallyneeded.during COVID, certain organizations needed something and needed something now,” explains Miller. “So, we started what we call our Community Fund that we have now reserved for any specific, urgent needs that come up.”

This exact situation happened recently; a local school came to BJWC in the hopes that the organization could help purchase headphones for students to use during their studies. When a beloved community member lost her husband suddenly, leaving her with countless expenses and a one-year-old child, the Community Fund swung into action.

“We were able to contribute to help her with some very basic needs,” says Wright. “It was amazing to be able to make a difference immediately.”Andyes, seeing the faces of those they are helping is something that makes the efforts of BJWC that much more special.

“At each of our monthly meetings, we invite a representative from an organization that we’ve given a grant to or have helped out in the past to come and speak to the group about what their mission is, what they do in the community, and how else we can help beside contributing financially,” says Miller.

Perhaps one of the most gratifying pieces of the BJWC mission is

the service-based scholarships traditionally awarded to high school seniors, including the coveted Janice Clark Presidential Scholarship that not only highlights the student’s good works but also helps BJWC ensure the club’s philanthropic spirit will persist for years to come.“Icouldn’t imagine anything better than having these young students, after they graduate from college, come back to the community and become a part of our organization,” concludes Miller. “Our doors will be wide open for them to bring in all their new ideas.”

Sour HandCherryPies

Hand pies are nostalgic. They recall childhood memories of biking with friends after school to a corner grocery store to find a rack of pies—waxpaper-sleeved, sugar-slicked, skimpy on the filling, but easy to grip in one hand as you wheeled leisurely down the street.

Homemade hand pies build on that nostalgia with better flavor and fresher fruit. This recipe yields hand pies full of fresh-picked

sour cherries, in a tender, flaky, oven-baked crust with an optional sugar glaze. A bit of almond flour in the dough and red wine vinegar in the filling adds nice texture and flavor. These pies are large enough to share, although you may want to eat one all by yourself as you linger over your weekend reading.

Choose fresh sour cherries from a farmers market or use thawed frozen sour cherries when fresh ones aren’t available. One tip: to pit fresh sour cherries, a counter-mounted cherry-pitter is very helpful.

FOOD ^ TRAVEL |RECIPE Hand-Pie ingredients

INGREDIENTS

FOR PIE CRUST

• 2 cups flour

• ½ cup almond flour

• 1 ½ sticks ice cold butter

• 1 large egg

• 1 ½ teaspoon red wine vinegar

• 1 to 2 tablespoons water

• 1 tablespoon sugar

• ½ teaspoon salt

FOR SOUR CHERRY FILLING

• 1 ½ pounds sour cherries, rinsed well, stems, leaves, and pits removed to make 3 cups

• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, squeezed from ½ fresh lemon

• Zest from ½ fresh lemon

• 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

• 3 tablespoons pure cane sugar

• 2 tablespoons cornstarch

• 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• ⅛ teaspoon salt

FOR EGG WASH AND FINISH

• 1 large egg and 1 tablespoon water, whisked together

FOR SUGAR GLAZE

• 2 cups powdered sugar (Note: If you use organic, it may give the glaze a slightly golden color)

• 2 tablespoons softened butter

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 3 to 4 tablespoons milk/or light cream

METHOD MAKE PIE CRUSTS

In a large, wide, shallow bowl, sift flour, almond flour, sugar, and salt together. Cut butter into the flour. Whisk egg with water and pour into center of the mixture. Sprinkle vinegar over. Using a fork stir together until dough comes together with a few crumbly bits still in the bowl. Spread work surface with two overlapping sheets of plastic wrap to make a square. Scoop dough and crumbly bits onto plastic. Lift the corners of the plastic up to make a bundle; squeeze and knead dough through plastic wrap until it all gathers into a ball of dough. (If still too crumbly, place back in bowl and add another teaspoon of water.)

Spread plastic back out. Pat dough into a lumpy disk. Cover with two more sheets of plastic making a square over the dough. Roll dough out just a bit through plastic into a flat circular mound. Remove top plastic and cut disk into four parts. Spread work surface with two pieces of overlapping plastic wrap to make another square. Place one of the four dough pieces on the wrap. Shape into a circle. Cover again with two squares of plastic and roll out into a 7-inch circle. Place dough circle—still with plastic wrap squares on both sides—on round baking sheet. Repeat for remaining three pieces of dough. Place stack of dough circles on baking sheet in refrigerator while you make the filling.

MAKE FILLING

Place pitted cherries in a strainer. Lightly press to release some juice into a bowl. Place pitted cherries, sugars, salt, lemon zest, and vanilla in a heavy-bottomed pot. Set aside. To the bowl of cherry juice, add vinegar, and lemon juice; whisk in cornstarch to make a slurry. Heat pot of cherries over medium-low heat. Stir in slurry. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly until mixture thickens, glaze clears, and cherries are softened. Remove from heat to cool.

ASSEMBLE PIES

Remove one disk of dough from the fridge. Leaving plastic square on both sides, gently roll out dough circle to a level ⅛-inch thickness. Using a 6-inch bowl, trace a 6-inch circle onto the plastic wrap-covered dough circle with a sharpie. Using kitchen shears, trim off the edge of the dough. Repeat process until all dough circles are trimmed. Cover a rimmed baking sheet with parchment. With oven rack set to center position, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place one trimmed dough circle on work surface. Remove top sheet of plastic. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons of the cherry filling on one half of the circle. Fold other half of dough up and over the filling, using the bottom plastic to help you lift and fold. Using the tines of a fork, press down and around the now-double-thickness edge of the pie through the remaining plastic to seal the pie. Lift finished hand pie toward parchment-lined baking sheet, flip to place; discard plastic. Repeat for remaining three pies. Brush pies liberally with egg wash. Cut slits in top of each pie to vent steam. Place sheet pan full of pies in refrigerator for 1 hour, or in freezer for ½ hour.

BAKE PIES

Place parchment-lined baking sheet full of chilled hand pies in oven. Bake in preheated 375-degree oven for 30 minutes, until pies are golden brown. Remove to a cooling rack.

GLAZE AND SERVE

Whisk powdered sugar with softened butter. Whisk in milk or cream and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over hand pies. Serve warm or at room temperature. cherriessour

TASTE OF PARADISE

A visit to the Thompson Zihuatanejo offers a luxurious immersion in culture and a delicious exploration of locally sourced Mexican cuisine with a global flair.

Framed by jungled cliffs and a magical ocean, Mexico’s Zihuatanejo offers beautiful beaches, spectacular sunsets, a vibrant central market, picturesque streets, and friendly residents. The area has long drawn celebrity visitors like Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger, and the Oscar-nominated film The Shawshank Redemption introduced many to this once sleepy fishing village. Fortunately, Zihuatanejo retains much of its original character. Its charming, narrow cobblestone streets are home to authentic restaurants, boutiques, and artisan studios, where one might find “Amate” paintings—vibrant scenes painted by native artisans on canvas fashioned from tree bark.

son Zihuatanejo. This luxury boutique hotel sits along the sands of the famous Playa La Ropa located in a bay of the Pacific Ocean. The 56-suite property thoughtfully blends the award-winning brand’s signature mid-century modern aesthetic with traditional Mexican architecture and handcrafted touches by local artisans. From its open-air restaurants featuring ingredients sourced from the surrounding region and rich culinary programming on-site to a series of turquoise pools and an intimate spa, the Thompson Zihuatanejo is a hidden gem where cultural sophistication blends beautifully with beachfront relaxation.

Each suite has a private entrance under a palapa-topped adobe structure. My suite’s open floor plan consisted of a living room/ work area that flowed into a large bedroom outfitted with gorgeous modern oversized furnishings. Two sets of French doors opened onto a palm-shaded enclave boasting several seating areas and a sapphire-tiled plunge pool. This area would be a favorite during my stay. Reclining on my chaise, I listened to the ocean and birdsong while watching the palm fronds dance in the breeze. Whenever I felt a touch overheated, I stepped into the pool’s cool water slightly disturbing the bougainvillea petals floating on its surface.

Guided by the Thompson Zihuatanejo’s Chef Javier Garcia Cerrillo (“Chef”), we did a deep dive into the region’s rich culinary history. Chef’s love for food and respect for its origin, along with his world view comes through in every bite—his passion is palpable. Before settling in Zihuatanejo, Chef lived all over the world and spent five years at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Spain. Through his travels, he learned that fire is a universal element; it flavors food and feeds souls in every corner of the planet. Thus, he incorporates

open fire cooking as much as possible. As his profession is one of the few to nourish customers’ bodies, Chef focuses intently on an ingredient’s quality and provenance. All ingredients in his kitchen are sourced regionally and much is grown in the hotel’s garden.

Our culinary deep dive began with a trip to Zihuatanejo’s fish market. With Chef as our guide, we visited the lively morning market full of an amazing array of fish glistening in the sunlight with well-fed feline fans lounging about on discarded nets. We chose a 45-pound tuna after Chef instructed us how to determine the freshness of the fish—clear eyes, firm to the touch, and retaining a scent of the sea. Our selection received top scores in each category. Back on the property, we ventured to the beach where the staff had erected a beautiful outdoor kitchen. Chef demonstrated his carving skills as he taught us how to properly slice the tuna—sharing that the belly (otoro and chutoro) offers the highest quality sushi. Our station also had an open fire grill where Chef prepared a snapper stuffed with sprigs of rosemary and slices of orange and wrapped in a palm frond. A spiny lobster grilled with a squeeze of lemon completed the seafood trifecta. A local variety that is mostly black

with bright red long spines, this lobster was unlike any I had ever seen. With toes in the sand and sun on our shoulders, we dined on our pescatarian meal—the embodiment of “fresh food.” The meal culminated in a sweet treat dubbed an “obscene and kinky chocolate cake.” Topped with M&M’s and pretzels, it was an exquisite combination of sweet and salty.

Our next culinary adventure—a special “HUMO” family-style experience—required the staff to construct an elaborate six-foot structure on the beach where Chef hung a variety of meats and vegetables to roast over an open fire for five or more hours. This long, slow roasting process materialized in a delectably juicy meal served alongside herb-infused tequila cocktails. The feast included pork ribs with chimichurri, short ribs with bone marrow and dark rub crust and dark beer au jus, Picanha (a cut of beef first made popular in Brazil) with a roast garlic crust, and Hang Chicken with pasilla pepper and pineapple sauce. We savored each fire-kissed bite against the backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountains, a tangerine sunset, and a nocturnal concert compliments of the ocean’s waves.

My absolute favorite culinary escapade was “La Parota, Dinner in the Wild.” Guided away from the ocean to the edge of the property, we entered a jungle landscape through a torch-lit pathway. Emerging from the walkway we discovered an elaborate outdoor kitchen, the “Wild Bar” serving a variety of tequila concoctions, and a beautifully set table beneath an arbor crowned with branches, palms, and flowers. A lush setting for the remarkable five-course meal that followed. The first course contained white fish and tangerines in a base derived from an ancient Mayan recipe. Argentinian street food inspired the second course—an empanada served alongside an iron skillet containing Choripan (Argentine sausage), Provoleta cheese, and something that resembled an American hotdog but tasted out of this world.

The third course highlighted Tikin Xik, a white fish that was coated with mixed ashes and fire-roasted. The fourth course introduced a dry-aged ribeye accompanied by a bone marrow esquite with roasted cauliflower puree and an ash mole with demi-glace and blue cheese. The fifth and final course consisted of beautifully potted chocolate “trees” imaginatively presented in the hollow of a large branch. I felt almost ashamed to eat such a delicate creation but after the first bite, I recovered from my hesitation and consumed every last bit. Divine—both in design and taste.

As we were in Mexico, an agave journey was a must. One evening, we tasted several tequilas while our mixologist described the varying colors, origins, and flavors of each. The tasting took place next to an immense Oscar Torres mural the hotel commissioned as part of its “Culture Lives Here” campaign, which supports local artists and educates guests about provincial customs.

Looking for an intoxicating getaway brimming with culture and cuisine? This Pacific Coast destination is the perfect escape for the traveler who seeks the experience of extraordinary meals in extraordinary settings. Beyond the sun, sand, and surf, awaits a foodie’s dream vacation. Buen provencho!

Timeless Estate

This stunning, one-of-a-kind custom Barrington Hills estate is being sold by the original owner-builders for the first time since it was built 32 years ago.

What makes a house a home? It’s tempting to think that selecting the finest materials, from custom cabinetry and woodwork to bespoke fixtures, countertops, and hardware, will fulfill this goal. Yet, a home is defined by the people who envision and inhabit it just as much as by the bricks and mortar surrounding it.

Such is the case of the Robert Parker Coffin-designed home and estate on Ridge Avenue in Barrington, now on the market for the first time since the home was built in 1990. While the current homeowner will be very sad to leave, she says, “I hope a family buys it and that there will be many children running through the rooms of our Therehome.”isatimelessness about this very special home and property. It seems at once old and new; artfully blending classic English and French country architectural elements with the features people want in a newer home—an achievement of modern elegance at its finest, without being ostentatious.

When the homeowners decided to build in Barrington, they selected the property and spent two years designing the house with Coffin and exactingly placed the house to take advantage of the sun

throughout the day. The estate is defined as much by the carefully planned and landscaped property as it is by the elegant home itself. Landscape architects with the well-regarded Brickman Group were commissioned to design multiple English-inspired gardens and a tree plan for the property, which once was wide-open horse country with very few trees. Now, the grounds dazzle from spring’s crocus to fall’s foliage when the towering canopy of mature trees (an investment of $500,000 three decades ago) explodes in color.

Two years went into the actual building of the home, and its stunning interiors are a testament to craftsmanship and attention to detail. A grand two-story entry foyer opens to the living room, which is reminiscent of an ultra-sophisticated Parisian salon, with a fireplace and French doors that open to a Juliet balcony overlooking the back gardens and lawn. Loads of windows and natural light create a natural flow throughout the main floor, achieving an open floor plan sensibility while maintaining defined living spaces, each with a purpose and character of its own.

As you walk from room to room, you can’t help but admire the gracefully arched doorways surrounded by handsome custom millwork and moldings throughout. Signature “Coffin Doors” leading to and from main rooms seamlessly disappear into the adjoining walls and blend into the woodwork. Several etched-glass custom windows

add another layer of design ingenuity to the home’s overall aesthetic.

The gourmet kitchen with butler’s pantry is ideal for family dinners or for entertaining a crowd. An expansive bluestone balcony patio spans the length of the house and looks out across the gardens and the 20-acre private back property. Buyers may choose to purchase 10, 15, or 20 acres along with the house.

A highlight of the house is the library or gentleman’s study, which was custom crafted from solid cherry wood. The room—suitable for reading, working, or sipping a glass of brandy while playing backgammon—may convince you that you have been transported to Downton

suite features its own fireplace (one of five in the home) along with a spacious spa-like master bath. Beyond the family bedrooms, there is a fully equipped multi-generational apartment suitable for a nanny, live-in help, or in-laws. A second set of stairs at this end of the home leads discreetly to the mudroom and kitchen downstairs.

The walkout lower level defies expectations and provides a large

portion of the home’s living space. Designed by Linda Grubb a few years after the home was initially built, it is the ultimate party and entertaining space, with a fully equipped gourmet kitchen, media room, family room with fireplace, wine cellar, and additional guestroom with full bath.

The media room itself was designed to the owner’s exact specifications. With a wool rug for sound absorption, the room is ideal for listening to opera or classical music or taking in a screening of a film that demands theater-quality viewing.

Despite its more than 11,000 square feet of living space, this house still manages to feel like a home in the best sense; perfectly harmonizing the needs of everyday life with the luxuries sought for gracious living and entertaining.

361 Ridge Avenue in Barrington Hills is currently offered at $3.4 million by the Kim Alden Team of Compass, Barrington. For more information, call 847-254-5757 or visit compass.com.

NEXT-LEVELLUXURY

Michael Bennett Luxury Projects takes luxury design and build to a whole new level of obsessive perfection.

Modernist architects, like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the early 20th Century, pioneered the notion that form should follow function; in the case of a home, the shape should primarily relate to the intended function or purpose on the inside—not the other way around.

Fast-forward more than 100 years to Michael Klein’s vision for the luxury niche he established five years ago. Michael Bennett Luxury (MBL), a division of Airoom Architects, Builders & Re modelers, focuses on unique, one-of-a-kind projects nationwide that require highly advanced design disciplines.

“After being in the design-build business for 35 years, I felt very underwhelmed by most of the luxury homes being built at high price points across the country,” says Klein, CEO of Airoom and MBL. “I felt that we could focus and carve out this piece of the market to deliver a much better turnkey luxury home without leading clients into so many overpriced poor decisions I’ve seen over the years.”

More and bigger is not necessarily better, especially when cou pled with faux architecture that often feels more like the home is yelling. “They can be over the top, and they are not necessarily thought out in terms of what’s best for the client—ergonomi cally, functionally, or emotionally. I knew that the market was

underserved, and I wanted to take luxury to the next level—in the purestWhilesense.”thefinished product is the ultimate goal, Klein says that the most important steps occur well before a home breaks ground—in the stages of site planning, conceptualization, design, and a focus on ergonomics and space. Using a select team with a concentration on personalization, fine details, materials transi Homes,

tions, and most importantly, elimination of tight spaces, an MBL project evolves over time through a process with more than 100 iterations on average to get it right.

“It’s a constant weekly refinement process as the team discovers the possibilities while eliminating the design flaws that are hiding in each unique design,” says Klein. “I start every day in search of perfection by asking, ‘Ok, what’s wrong with this picture?’”

“People rely on our ability to know more than they do, under stand where the pitfalls are, where the hang-ups can be, when to say ‘yes,’ when to say ‘no,’ and when to insist that certain things have to happen. It’s our job at this level to point out the things clients don’t know, do the hard work for them, and bring them along. It’s a complete immersion process by visualizing myself inside each Accordingspace.”toKlein, a home should be designed from the inside out, and he can always tell when it wasn’t done that way.

“Designing from the outside in almost always leads to mis takes,” he explains. “People often focus on what their house is go ing to look like from the outside, ‘its curb appeal,’ way too early.” Instead, the MBL team always starts by planning the inside and locating the direction of the sun.

“In the end, a real luxury outcome is all about the transitions of spaces and planes and sight lines from every angle,” Klein ex

plains. “We must always be conscious of what one will see when they look left or right from dif ferent vantage points in each room. Is the space ergonomically and func tionally correct for the potential people load?”

These are the questions that matter and should come first. An MBL home will introduce sight lines that have a subtle impact at every turn and include some understated drama, with all-day sun and ambient light throughout that create a mood and is ideal for displaying artwork.

“Our homes are built for entertainment lifestyles, where both the indoors and outdoors are important,” he explains. “We get much more footage by borrowing space from the outdoors.” An MBL home never wastes space by oversizing sleeping quarters while almost always oversizing doorways and hallways.

Spend some time with Michael Klein and you realize he is exceptionally astute and talented at what he does. “That’s because I’m an obsessive perfectionist who inherited and developed a re ally good eye,” he laughs. “But it can be a curse for my team when we’re on our 100th revision,” says Klein.

“True luxury living is for the select few. And while we respect the budget, the budget is not the primary driver of a Michael Bennett Luxury Project.”

Michael Bennett Luxury Projects is located at 6825 Lincoln Avenue in Lincolnwood. For more information, call 847-416-8698 or visit MBLuxe22.com.

It’s about you.

3 things you should know this month in 60010

The Barrington Area luxury market is thriving. While market velocity overall has certainly slowed recently, luxury homes in the $1 million+ price range remain in high demand. Buyers at this price point are less impacted by interest rates – many are all-cash buyers – and there has been renewed demand post-pandemic for the types of luxury homes that our area is known for: classic, spacious estates with abundant amenities, especially pools! (I’ve also been talking with a lot more buyers looking to relocate here from the city.) If you own a luxury home and are considering selling, let me help you capitalize on these favorable market conditions.

Property taxes matter … take the time to appeal! No matter the price point, property taxes are an important part of buyers’ decision-making process. I’ve seen several otherwise enthusiastic buyers get cold feet recently when confronted with what they considered to be excessive property taxes. If you’re looking to sell – and even if you’re not – take the time to appeal your assessment. A qualified tax appeal attorney can do the work for you, and for a nominal fee.

Find an agent who’s focused on you, not their transaction volume. Finding the right Realtor can be challenging. With more than 500 licensed brokers in 60010, where do you even begin? Some brokers would have you believe that their transaction volume is the most important factor. While that information is worth considering (experience is important, after all), don’t let it distract you from what really matters. You deserve a broker who’s focused on your specific needs and goals. I’m very proud of the significant number of clients who I’ve been fortunate enough to assist so far in my career. But I’m prouder yet of consistently taking the time to go the extra mile to help buyers find their true dream home and to help sellers extract every dollar of value from their sale.

Did you hear? Jim Gaffigan—THE Jim Gaffigan—plans to grace Barrington again with his hilariousness in late September. Country heard the chatter early last month. Maybe, we thought, Gaffigan wanted to return to good ol’ Barrington to perform before a private audience and raise gobs of money for another heartwarming cause.

You see, Gaffigan has the philanthropy gene. In 2012 he dropped his comedy album “Mr. Universe”—for which he received a Grammy nomination—offered it for $5 on his website and donated $1 for every sale to the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The BWF is a nonprofit that supports post 9/11 service members, veterans, and their families after they return home.

Woodruff, an American television journalist, was seriously injured by an IED explosion during an ABC News reporting trip to Iraq in 2006.Intrue Hollywood style, our people got in touch with Gaffigan’s people to confirm his returning to Barrington and asked if Gaffigan would share with us some memories of his childhood here.

We received this response a few days later:

“All of my earliest memories were of growing up in Barrington until the fifth grade,” Gaffigan states. “It’s literally the reference point of my entire life. No pressure.”

Gaffigan, now 56-years old and a father of five, grew up in Barrington’s Jewel Park neighborhood until he was 10 or so, in an old farmhouse, built circa 1867. Before Gaffigan’s parents bought their family home in Jewel Park, the Jewel Tea Company owned it, using it as an inn for its sales reps.

Gaffigan must have made an appearance in Barrington, somewhere. We’re guessing—no, assuming—he brought the house (not a certain Jewel Park dwelling) down and shook more than a few other structures in the 60010.

Gaffigan’s brand of comedy has been described as clean, observational. He published the book Food: A Love Story in 2014. It’ll make you hungry. It’ll make you laugh. Hard.

“What are my qualifications to write this book?” writes Gaffigan, who was born in Elgin and is the youngest of his parents’ six

children. “None really. Here’s why: I’m a little fat. If a thin guy were to write about a love of food and eating, I’d highly recommend that you do not read his book.”

If you didn’t catch Gaffigan’s event in Barrington this past month, you can book a ticket to the six-time Grammy nominated comedian’s current show, The Fun Tour, at a location around the world. Or tune in to his humor from the comfort of your couch and watch his current special Comedy Monster on Netflix. And you never know, if Barrington is—as he says—the “reference point for (his) entire life” there may just be a tour based on our hometown in the works.

For more information on Gaffigan’s The Fun Tour, visit jimgaffigan.com.

A rumor standup comedian and former Barrington resident Jim Gaffigan planned to return to his hometown last month, proves true.
