NATIONAL JEWELER: HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
National Jeweler, the leading New York-based news source for jewelry industry insiders, has chosen the latest group of inductees for its prestigious Retailer Hall of Fame. Stan and Ingrid Razny, second-generation owners of Razny Jewelers, are receiving the 2023 honor as forward-thinking multi-store independent jewelers.*
WATCHPRO FEATURES
TALKING TIMEPIECES:
Editor and founder of WatchPro, Rob Corder, sat with Stan Razny to talk timepieces, discuss the ever-changing landscape of the luxury watch market, and breakdown how family-owned independents provide the value that direct-to-consumer brands struggle to match.
Deemed “The Big Interview,” it also showed how seriously Razny Jewelers takes its position as the only authorized dealer for Patek Philippe in a territory that stretches across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin, surpassing 220,000 square miles.*
RAZNY JEWELERS NAMED TOP 100:
Razny Jewelers is honored to have made this year’s Hot 100 list in the Retail Power Players categoary. Published by WatchPro magazine, the premier publication for news on timepieces and jewelry for collectors around the globe, this designation is reserved for elite American jewelers who display exceptional growth and success.*
AS SEEN IN VOGUE
Over 75 years ago, the Razny family immigrated to America with the vision of building a legacy they could pass on to their children. Today, they are proud to have developed their dream into something far grander than they could have imagined. Ingrid Razny and Christine Razny-Porter share their family’s story in this September’s issue of Vogue Magazine.*

I am thinking about purchasing a luxury home, which features should I be looking for?
Today, it’s evident that most homebuyers are seeking move-in ready properties. In the realm of luxury homes, certain features are particularly enticing to potential buyers:
Smart-home technology: Buyers expect features like integrated lighting control, climate control, and audio-visual systems that can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet.
Amenities: Luxury homes frequently come with a range of amenities, such as swimming pools, saunas, hot tubs, home theaters, wine cellars, gyms, and spa-like bathrooms. Outdoor living spaces, including kitchens and fire pits, are also popular.
Gourmet kitchen: Once considered the “heart of the home,” the kitchen is still a focal point in many luxury homes. Gourmet kitchens with top-of-the-line appliances, spacious islands, and high-quality cabinetry are expected.
A grand primary bedroom: The primary suite should serve as a sanctuary. Desired features include a
fireplace, access to the outdoors—whether it be a private garden, hot tub, or pool deck—an inviting reading area with comfortable seating, and or even a wet or coffee bar. A scenic view is a must.
Walk-In closets: Believe the old adage, that you can never have too many closets. Walk-in closets in every bedroom with custom shelving and storage.
Home office: The pandemic has shifted our work dynamics, highlighting the convenience, cost savings, and efficiency of working from home. Today, it’s imperative to have a home office.
Dedicated guest quarters: There is nothing appealing about a sleeper-sofa, so a luxury home will always have a dedicated guest room. Nothing more needs to be said!
Outdoor Spaces: Beautifully landscaped gardens, courtyards, and outdoor entertaining areas greatly enhance the appeal of a luxury home.
Security: Luxury homeowners prioritize security. This may include gated entry, surveillance systems, alarm systems, and secure storage for valuable items.
Concierge Services: Properties in prestigious neighborhoods, waterfront locations, gated communities, or areas with exceptional views are desired. They may offer concierge services or access to amenities like private clubs or golf courses.

EDITOR’S NOTE
There’s just something about October that is so full of excitement.
The air is starting to turn cool, a cornucopia of color is presenting itself as the leaves change color and fall to the ground to crunch underfoot, and just around the corner is the full press of the holiday season.
In this issue, we return to Barrington native, Margaret Palmer (nee Rajic), as she shares with us a Home Tour of her lovingly renovated Barrington property with her husband, Matt. Their story is truly what bucolic dreams are made of. In Living & Giving, Gina Kaiser takes us inside a charity event to raise money for orphans in Zimbabwe highlighting the work our community does abroad, as well.
In Features, Kymberly Wiedenkeller Kainz shows that it’s never too late to learn a new talent, as she shares with us her bold move into a new space as a bronze casting artist.

What actress would play you in a movie? Kristin Bell. She’s a fellow blonde, Michigander, and like her, my life ranges from Disney-like to House of Lies and Bad Moms Who from history would you want to travel with? Eleanor Roosevelt. As the longest-serving First Lady (for 12 years!), she re-defined the role. Instead of selecting a tea set for the White House, she was constantly on the move, traveling across the country to meet with all different kinds of people, listening to their concerns, and offering help. What an amazing experience it would be to join her as she blazed her own path, looking around to see what needed to be done and how we could contribute. Where do you look for inspiration? I find inspiration from two sources. When I’m able to be out in nature and moving— running, kayaking—that’s when I do my best thinking and solve all the problems. I also get inspired by talking with other women. I love meeting women from all different backgrounds and learning about their journeys and experiences. Connecting with them sparks energy for me. Favorite book? I was an English major and my first job out of college was in book publishing, so I love to read. I always have multiple books going at once. I’m currently listening to the last book
in Alka Joshi’s trilogy, The Perfumist of Paris, as well as Malcolm Gladwell’s Talking to Strangers. On my nightstand, almost finished, is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Most beloved cookbook? When I got married, my grandmother gifted me a handwritten cookbook with all her recipes. While I don’t quite cook with as much oleo or Jell-O these days, it’s so special to have family recipes written in her handwriting to make dishes that I grew up with for my own family. I continue to add recipes that my kids like to the now tattered and well-loved cookbook. Best dinner party hack? Our current lifestyle might be described best as organized chaos. My husband and I often high-five each other on our way in and out the door traveling for work, and our boys are in all the sports. Yet, we both love to socialize and spend time with friends. Because of these two things, our party hack is that we always have a stocked bar and the full Trader Joe’s frozen section at the ready for impromptu gatherings. What’s in your bag right now? Way too many things. More lip balm than one person needs to carry with them (mostly BITCHSTIX and Aquaphor), and always an assortment of GoMacro bars and peppermint gum. And my keys, somewhere in there. Hopefully.

Why accreditation matters when choosing a cosmetic dentist.
WORDS BY JAMES T. GAVRILOS
ink about the ways we select a dentist. Some will ask a friend or neighbor. Others will go online and check reviews. Some will even respond to advertising that comes in the mail. But even with all of these methods, we cannot be sure how good their work is. is is where accreditation comes in.
Imagine that your dentist’s work could be evaluated by the top dentists in the world. ey would have to submit their work for evaluation and it would have to pass the highest of quality standards. e American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has a program that performs this exact type of screening.
For 35 years, the AACD has offered this credentialing program.
Accreditation serves to set the standard for excellence in cosmetic dentistry. Achieving accredited status from the AACD requires dedication to continuing education, careful adherence to the protocol, and a resolve to produce exceptional dentistry. Over the past 35 years, thousands of dentists have attempted to complete the process but only 400 have been able to meet the standard. Of these 400, only 200 in the world still practice dentistry today.
e process begins with a written examination. If the candidate passes the written part, they can then start the clinical portion. is involves completing five different reconstructive procedures that are pre-determined by the association. Each case is photographed under high magnification and also requires a written report. Once the documentation is complete, the case is submitted for evaluation.
After the clinical portions are passed, a final oral examination is conducted along with a review of all the clinical photography and reporting. Only after passing all of these steps does the dentist receive his accredited status.
When you are ready to look for a new dentist, let AACD help you. Go to aacd.com and select the “Find a Dentist” tab. You will be asked to enter your location and you will be given a list of the dentists in your area. Keep in mind that less than 1 percent of the world’s dentists are accredited so you may have to travel to get to one. is first step will be a lot more reliable in getting the quality work that you need than asking a neighbor, going through online reviews or responding to a coupon.
Dr. James T. Gavrilos is accredited with AACD. His o ce is located at 129 Park Avenue in Barrington. For more information, call 847-3814040 or visit barringtondentist.com.

HEART OF GOLD
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASKO OMEROVIC
It Gym partnered with MATTER, the NGO, to host the Heart of Gold Fundraiser benefiting the Boxing Academy of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and its orphanage. Proceeds from the event went towards building and opening a brand new boxing academy whose business will financially sustain the on-site orphanage. The fundraiser raised $50,000—double the goal—of which 100 percent of the proceeds will help provide a home for orphaned children who, otherwise, would not have access to shelter, education, and other essential resources.

EQUITY PARTNER BEERMANN LLP
Shana Vitek is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in Illinois. For the past 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law exclusively. She handles a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile and high-net-worth clients. Vitek’s ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a handful of attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and serves on the Board of Governors for the Illinois Chapter. “Every family is different, so each case that we handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “I enjoy going to court and arguing my client’s position, but that typically isn’t a client’s first choice.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney. If a case can be handled using a cooperative approach, that is her preferred process as it allows the parties to decide what is best for their family and maintain confidentiality, keeping personal matters out of the public record. Vitek believes it is important to give back to the community. She is Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. In partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, this first of its kind family law clinic provides pro bono legal services to individuals going through domestic relations proceedings who could not otherwise afford legal representation. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community, and given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters,” says Vitek. Lauren Hansen transforms her Lake Barrington home and becomes a social media star in the process.

Incorporating black furniture grounds the space, compliments the design elements, and exudes sophistication and warmth.
What’s that saying—do what you love and you won’t work a day in your life?
That’s exactly how Lake Barrington’s Lauren Hansen lives her life, turning a creative outlet into a profitable interior design business.
In March of 2020, just before the world shut down, Lauren and Trevor Hansen sold their Chicago condo on a whim.
“We had been looking for a house in the suburbs for a while,” Hansen explains. “I had seen this Barrington house on the market for a while and couldn’t figure out why no one was buying it.”
Once Hansen was able to convince her husband to finally list their city dwelling, they priced it high—in no real hurry to move. But the stars aligned for the Hansens to make the big move to Barrington and their condo sold in a week.
“I still can’t believe how it all came together,” she says. “We sold quickly and were able to close right before everything stopped because of COVID.”
Hansen went right to work making their new house feel like them.
“It was a little bit of a struggle in the beginning trying to pull the house together because nothing was open,” Hansen remembers.
“With our condo being relatively small, we didn’t have much furniture to bring to this house. We needed a dining room table and a sectional for the living room. I found myself just buying things to fill the space and making do with it until I could make it better.”
One of the first rooms Hansen finished was the primary bedroom. It turned out so pretty that she decided to photograph it.
“It was actually my husband who encouraged me to start an Instagram account,” she says. “He thought the bedroom was so beautiful that I should share it. I was so against this because I’m not a showy person, but I thought it might help someone who is looking for inspiration for their own home.”
From there, @laurenashleyhansen was born. As Hansen completed projects around her home, she shared photos of those spaces on her account. She posted consistently and began to gain some momentum.

In the great room, the neutral chenille sofa contrasts with the wood ceiling to keep the room bright and inviting.
“I really didn’t know what I was doing at all, but it was fun, and I was making progress, and the people who followed me seemed to enjoy my content,” she says. “I decided to see what happened if I reached out to a brand about collaborating. My thought was if I could get brands I liked to share product with me, I could use them to furnish my house and write about them in return.”
Ruggable, a washable rug company, was the first company to take Hansen up on her offer.
“Ruggable sent me some rugs that I used in a few of my rooms,” Hansen explains. “They then used the pictures I took in some of their ad campaigns and that’s when my account really took off. It put me in front of a lot more people interested in the kind of content I was sharing.” Today @laurenashleyhansen has more than 164,000 followers on Instagram.
What some of Hansen’s followers may not realize is that in addition to being a digital content creator, she’s also a married mother of two, a Barrington Junior Women’s Club board member, and a part-time nurse in the transplant unit of a Chicago area hospital.
“My coworkers keep asking me when I’m going to quit my job as a nurse,” she says. “But I’ve worked with some of these people for almost 10 years. We’re a tight knit group—they’re like family. I’m not ready to leave them quite yet.”
But Hansen is learning that there are only so many hours in a day, and the demands for her time and talents are growing.
“A number of my followers have asked if I would help them design their homes,” she says. “They’re willing to pay me to help them do this.”
So just a little over a year ago, Lauren Hansen Home officially became an LLC.
“My followers have shared with me that when they tried to work with a traditional designer, they would be turned away because the project was too small, or the budget wasn’t big enough,” she says. “I’ve tried to make my in-person and e-design services more customizable where a client can pick and choose which rooms they need my help with and how they want to work with me. I can be involved as a little or as much as they need me.”
Hansen is able to offer in-person or e-design depending on the client’s needs. Using measurements and photos of the space, she then creates a floor plan that helps put everything to scale, so that she can accurately comment on furniture placement, sizing, etc. Hansen then fully sources the pieces that will bring the space to life through design boards.
“I try to do whatever works best for the client,” she adds. “It’s a
work in progress for sure, and I’m learning something new every day. Some people ask me to source things only from retailers like Restoration Hardware, where others ask if I can find everything at Crate & Barrel [a Hansen favorite] or Target. It’s so much fun because no two projects are the same.”
In addition to growing as a designer, Hansen is evolving as a content creator.
“What I share on Instagram is authentic to the work that is happening at my house—often as it’s happening in my house,” she says with a laugh. “There are so many times when I’m half way through a project before I realize I’ve forgotten to film it.”
Hansen’s love for muted hues and neutral décor is often showcased in her beautifully lit photos.
“My photography skills have probably grown the most,” she says. “I now know how the sunlight will hit certain rooms at different times in the day. But one cloudy day can totally throw off my content-creating plans. And that’s when I remember I can try again tomorrow when the sun is shining again.”

AN ARTISTIC BEGINNING
Kymberly Kainz Discovers a New Chapter as a Bronze Casting Artist.
WORDS BY WENDY ALTSCHULER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIA PONCE BERRE STYLED BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR AND MAKEUP BY FRANCES TSALAS
The truth is, there’s no timeline, no age requirement, and no barricade preventing you from lobbing yourself into a new creative endeavor. Do you want to take up pottery, but you’ve never used a wheel before? Go for it. Have you dreamed about becoming a painter, sculptor, make-up artist, or designer but you’re not sure you’d be any good at it? Try it anyway.
Barrington local and mother of three boys, Kymberly Wiedenkeller Kainz (Kym), grew up in New York and Kansas, double majored at the University of Kansas, received a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine, and then later moved to the great state of Illinois. She lives in a historic farmhouse from 1929, which has brought out a fair amount of her handywoman skills.
“I appreciate the open space and small town feel of Barrington,” says Kainz. “I am fortunate to have been
welcomed into an amazing family in Barrington and I have made beautiful friendships that mean the world to me. My youngest son has a crew that is reminiscent of the tight-knit neighborhood besties I grew up with, so it’s been a pleasure watching them grow up together.”
At first glance, most folks might not readily deduce that Kainz is a promising bronze casting artist. “I’ve always found pleasure in creating things and experimenting with different mediums,” Kainz says. “Along with being a seamstress, I enjoy drawing, painting, mosaic art, and refurbishing antiques.”
When Kainz’s friend saw her work, she told Kainz that she should join a bronze class with her at Harper College. “Prior to her suggestion, I hadn’t really given metalwork any thought,” Kainz says.
Now in her fourth bronze casting session, Kainz, of course, has learned many skills along the way. She’s honed

in on her workflow and medium preferences. There have been challenges and triumphs but for the most part, the art and new friendships keep bringing her back.
“I went into this class knowing nothing about bronze casting, so the entire process has been a learning experience,” Kainz says. “There are a few ways to create what becomes the final metal piece and I’m finding that my preference is to first create my piece with clay. Others prefer to begin their piece by shaping wax into the desired shape, but I find it challenging to start with wax because it’s not as malleable or forgiving as clay. Starting with clay adds a few extra steps, however, as you need to make a plaster or silicone mold of your piece in order to turn it into a wax prototype.”
One of the first works of art Kainz created—a small old man who sits on a shelf—remains one of her favorite pieces. “He’s pretty rough, but I’m rather fond of him,” Kainz says. She goes on to say, “I’m pretty excited about the piece I’m working on now. It’s textured to emulate movement, like waves or flames. I restored the upper panel of an old piano, which will work as its frame. It’s definitely a challenging piece because I’ll have to make it in separate pieces, then weld them together, which I haven’t attempted before.”
Learning and growing with her art is always a part of the process. She continues to learn through trial and error, eschewing shortcuts when bronze casting. There’s frequently a big satisfying payoff, however, because after a laborious process and, often, months of work and toil, the outcome can be something quite beautiful.
Of course, a setback can result as well. “You really have to put in the work and remain flexible during the process,” says Kainz. “I made a piece using a silicon mold during the last course session and it was a nightmare because the hot wax kept oozing out of the mold and it took hours of constant monitoring, stanching leaks, and adding additional wax. I was pleased with the final outcome, but it was definitely a labor of love.”
For any budding artist in the Barrington community, who is looking to try something newfangled, Kainz has some sage advice and inspiration: “There are so many opportunities to try new things. Think of something you’ve never considered doing and do it. You never know the people you will meet and the skills you’ll discover. I recently learned that the father of a Barrington local, who is a personal friend, was instrumental in developing the bronze casting program at Harper many years ago.”
And, as far as selling or showcasing her work goes, Kainz imagines that bronze casting will be something she enjoys for a long time into the future. “I have a very romantic notion of creating something that someone would want to put in their home,” Kainz says. “I guess time will tell. I don’t know where this journey will take me, but I’m enjoying the ride and the people I’m meeting along the way!”
Kainz recommends perusing your local community college course catalog that is available as well as looking into your community centers or libraries for trying something new.
Let your passion take you somewhere you didn’t think you could go, perhaps where new friendships are waiting.

Harissa Roasted Carrots and Beets with Crispy Spiced Chickpeas and Lemon-Zested Yogurt
RECIPE, WORDS, AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
There is nothing like oven-roasting to bring out deep flavors in beets and carrots; flavors rich enough to match their vibrant hues. This dish takes these flavors to another level with the addition of warm spices for pungent depth, lemon-zested yogurt for cool creaminess, a smear of Tunisian harissa paste for heat, and crisp chickpeas for crunchy textural contrast.
Harissa, the bright red hot chili pepper paste that UNESCO lists as part of Tunisia’s intangible cultural heritage, is made with roasted peppers, spices, herbs, garlic, and olive oil.
Because the three main herbs used in harissa paste are caraway, coriander, and cumin seed, we created a spice blend with those three seeds for the roast carrots.
A dollop of dairy—Greek yogurt we’ve mixed with lemon zest, salt, pepper, and lemon thyme—is tangy and cool next to the bright swipe of hot harissa. Or, if you have access to labneh—the creamy Middle Eastern yogurt traditionally made with goat’s milk—that works well in place of the Greek yogurt and has a similarly thick consistency.
Crowning the dish, the crispy chickpeas are very easy to make. Rinsed and dried well, canned chickpeas transform into crunchy golden nuggets when mixed with a little oil and seasoning and oven roasted. Make extra of these if you like—they are great for snacking.

METHOD PREP CHICKPEAS
Pour can of chickpeas into a colander. Rinse well. Place rinsed chickpeas on clean, thick cotton cloth and gently roll them around a bit. Blot tops of chickpeas to dry them more with paper towel. Don’t worry if some of the skins separate. Set aside.
SEASON YOGURT
In a small bowl, whisk Greek yogurt or labneh with the zest of one fresh lemon. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper and 2 teaspoons fresh lemon thyme leaves. Cover and refrigerate.
MAKE SPICE BLEND
In a spice mill or coffee grinder, pulse caraway and coriander to a fine powder. Place in a bowl and stir in 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika and 1/2 teaspoon of cumin.
ROAST CARROTS AND BEETS
Preheat oven to 400. Cut tops off beets; leave skins on. Rinse and scrub very well. Make a shallow little boat out of aluminum foil and place on large rimmed baking sheet. Place beets in foil boat, drizzle generously with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover the sheet pan with the beet boat with more foil and roast for 20 minutes. Wash and scrub carrots well, leaving skins on. Trim tops leaving 1 ½ inches intact. Cut carrots in half lengthwise. After beets have roasted for 20 minutes, pull sheet pan from oven,
lift foil, and spread carrots on half of the rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle carrots with remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil then sprinkle with the ground spice blend. Flip and roll carrots in the oil and seasoning to ensure they are well coated. Add several grinds of black pepper and salt. Completely cover sheet pan with the foil again.
ROAST CHICKPEAS AND FINISH ROASTING CARROTS AND BEETS
Toss airdried chickpeas with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, a teaspoon of salt, and a teaspoon of fresh cracked pepper. Pour chickpeas onto a second sheet pan and place on second rack of oven. Place the foil-covered sheet pan of beets and carrots on the top rack of the oven. Roast beets, carrots, and chickpeas for another 20 to 25 minutes, until beets and carrots are tender and chickpeas are crispy. Remove from oven.
ASSEMBLE DISH
Lift carrots from sheet pan and arrange on serving dish, reserving the oil and spices from roasting pan. Slip peels off beets; slice beets into chunks, and arrange over the carrots. In a small bowl, whisk the reserved spices and oil from the carrots with 1 teaspoon honey. Dot some of this mixture over the beets and carrots. Add a few more grinds of black pepper and salt. Add a dollop of the seasoned Greek yogurt on top of the vegetables. Smear a tablespoon of harissa onto the yogurt. Sprinkle handfuls of crispy chickpeas all over. Add a few more lemon thyme leaves. Serve immediately.

AutoCamp Yosemite
Airstream Vista Suite
WORDS BY MEGAN WEISBERG
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY AARON LEITZ
Tucked away at the base of the mountain on the road into Yosemite Valley near Mariposa County is the newest in low-key, luxe travel—AutoCamp Yosemite. If your wish is to connect with nature in a design-centric setting, then consider AutoCamp your magic lantern.
Hoping to create one more magical summer memory, our family decided to return to a family favorite— Yosemite National Park. As this was the height of the busy season, we opted to stay at AutoCamp— just far enough from Yosemite to escape the crowds while still close enough for day trips. Pulling into the gates, the sight of rows of pristine Airstreams caused ooohs and ahhhs to echo through the car. AutoCamp’s accommodations include modern Airstream Suites with private patios and firepits, spacious luxury canvas tents, and private wooden cabins, all offering upscale design with a dash of rustic glamping vibes.
As we checked in at the mid-century-style Clubhouse, our children were thrilled to find the hot chocolate that waits for guests each afternoon. Fully staffed around the clock, the Clubhouse is the main hub of AutoCamp. With a petite gourmet grocery store dubbed the General Store, it’s the perfect place to assemble an impromptu charcuterie board, grab a bottle of local California wine or some decadent ice cream bars to take to your home away from home.
Opening the door to our Airstream Suite we were delighted with the modern, well-planned décor that awaited us inside. The primary bedroom was full of secret doors that opened to reveal small cupboards—perfect for storing away our items. Well-lit with bedside nightlights, it was an ideal spot to cozy up and read after a long day’s adventure. Although the Airstream was equipped with a television, we
opted instead to unwind at night by building a fire outside, roasting s’mores, and looking for shooting stars.
The fully equipped kitchen made it a breeze to prepare fresh morning coffee, using the coffee beans provided by a local roaster, and whip up a quick breakfast using local ingredients purchased from the General Store. The well-sized washroom stocked with Ursa Major amenities and soft towels certainly elevated the rustic experience.
As the property is easily accessed off the main road into Yosemite Village, we found it quite convenient to drive to the Valley floor and explore. Our first stop was the majestic beau-
ty of Tunnel View. After driving through a long, dimly lit tunnel, we exited to a burst of sunshine illuminating the brilliantly colored mountains. From there, we made our way to Mirror Lake for a hike on the excellent trail that circumnavigates the lake. A post-hike swim is the best way to appreciate the aptly named lake; floating on the water you soak up the

views of the mountains towering above you while these same views are reflected on the lake’s surface around you. When we arrived back at AutoCamp late that afternoon, the aquatic activities continued as our children played in a beautiful pool under towering redwoods while my husband and I relaxed and thanked our lucky stars.
Guests who wish to stay on the property will find a plethora of unique activities from yoga to dried floral arranging to geocaching to a nature therapy experience, and more. AutoCamp also offers curated experiences like a tour and tasting at the family-owned Sierra Cider Orchards or a tour of a private flower farm that grows boutique, pesticide-free flowers in an idyllic setting. The charming small town of Mariposa is also nearby for wine tasting, dining, and local shopping.
AutoCamp’s relaxed atmosphere is perfect for families seeking to unwind and reconnect. The amenities from the freshwater pool to the hammock grove to complimentary mountain bikes provide hours of entertainment. Vacation mealtimes can sometimes be fraught affairs. Not so at AutoCamp. We loved how easy it was to pop to the General Store to pick up a Grill Kit to cook over our campfire or opt out of cooking altogether and enjoy a delicious meal courtesy of The Kitchen.
Our family was excited to discover that AutoCamp has six more locations across the country. Ranging from Cape Cod to the Catskills to Joshua Tree, we can’t wait to experience our country’s most beautiful natural areas via AutoCamp. Turn your own vacation wishes into reality by booking now.

The Art of Home
Sara Story’s debut book, The Art of Home, co-written with Judy Nasatir, presents Story’s remarkable design career and distinctive approach to interiors. Within its pages, Story recognizes the universal truth that there is truly no place like home as our homes are the personal and individualistic representation of our favorite places, people, and objects. By showcasing three of Story’s own homes, each with a distinct design, the book invites readers to delve deeply into Story’s creative process. From her contemporary Texas ranch to her Gramercy Park townhouse to a historic home on the Hudson River, Story’s designs display diversity while incorporating layers, collections, and a touch of whimsy. rizzoli.com

The Farm Life in Barrington Hills
Matt and Margaret Palmer Bring a Dream to Life.

In December 2020, Country profiled Margaret Rajic Palmer, a professional photographer specializing in interior photography. After three years living and working in Chicago, Rajic Palmer and her husband, Matt Palmer, a data engineer, had just finalized plans to renovate a 5-acre Barrington Hills property. Today, “Palmer Farm,” as the young couple call their home, includes a bright and contemporary farmhouse and a lively family of animals.
“We have a whole crew here,” says Rajic Palmer, speaking over the frequent chatter of their three goats. “We got them in the spring and they’re very needy. Any time they see us they holler out for attention. They just want to be cuddled. And treats—they want those too.”
The city-to-country move was something of a homecoming for Rajic Palmer, who grew up in nearby Barrington, although it was a bit more of an eye-opener for her husband, originally from Pelham, New York, about ten miles north of Midtown Manhattan. The two met in 2014 as students at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and then lived in New York City until 2017. After moving to Chicago, they settled into a townhome in the Lakeview neighborhood.
In early 2020, when the couple decided to make another change, things happened quickly. “Our townhome was under contract in
one day,” says Rajic Palmer. “It was so sudden that we still hadn’t found a new house. We lived with my mom [in Barrington] while we looked for a place.”
In fact, Rajic Palmer’s mother, Dragana Seizovic, discovered the five-acre property in Barrington Hills that ultimately became Palmer Farm. Along with a 1,600-square-foot Cape-Cod style farmhouse, it included a carriage house and a three-stall barn with a hayloft. At one time in its distant past, the property was a working dairy operation. More recently, it had been a horse farm.
“We first saw it on a miserable rainy day. The property looked overgrown and outdated, but we knew right away that we wanted it,” Rajic Palmer recalls.
For the 19th century farmhouse, the Palmer’s renovation proved ambitious and wide-ranging, transforming it into a contemporary

space that felt larger and brighter. For example, a tiny upstairs bedroom was converted into a full bathroom to accompany the master bedroom. They enhanced the kitchen’s existing layout through extensive cosmetic updates, including new cabinetry, faucets, and tile. They also refinished the floors.
“In the mornings, the sun shines in to the breakfast nook,” Rajic Palmer says. “I always appreciate the dappled light filtering through the trees.”
Improving the outside infrastructure was a definite priority because the couple intended to add to the cat and two dogs they already owned. They set up a coop for a new flock of chickens; before the goats arrived, they dug post holes and poured concrete to install the fencing.
The most significant project was remodeling the stone and timber barn. “The stalls in the barn were dilapidated and Matt took the lead on researching and buying the equipment to build new stalls, which he also did,” says Rajic Palmer, who adds with a laugh, “I dragged him to the Midwest from the East Coast, but we discovered he’s really a Midwesterner at heart. He really loves riding his tractor and working on all his farm projects.”
The pastoral character of Barrington Hills initially attracted Rajic Palmer because, while still living in Chicago, she’d taken up horseback riding. After installing a water line and running electricity out to their pasture, the Palmers moved in two horses:
Buckley, a Paint Quarter Horse, and Tenzeran an Oldenburg who was trained in dressage and turned 30 this year.
“We do a lot of trail riding,” says Rajic Palmer. “We have a really strong equestrian community in Barrington Hills. There is an amazing and unique bridle path trail system that goes through the whole town that is maintained and stewarded by the Riding Club of Barrington Hills.”
The Palmers regularly attend equestrian events, like the annual LeCompte/Kalaway Trailowners Cup, a polo match held every September at nearby Oakwood Farms, and the horseback trickor-treat ride for kids each Halloween, which is hosted by the Fox River Valley Pony Club.
Now that autumn has arrived, Palmer Farm is running smoothly. Matt Palmer still works in the tech field, remotely, and enjoys being able to finish his workday and immediately be outside in the country. Rajic Palmer maintains her weekly schedule of photographing interiors throughout Chicagoland while also being on the Board of the Riding Club of Barrington Hills. With the crisp weather comes plenty of trail riding, as well as bonfires in the back yard.
“I love this cozy time of year. When the days are shorter I feel like I savor my time outdoors even more,” says Rajic Palmer. “Outside our front door we see our three little goats running around. Out the back, we can peek at the horses grazing in the pasture. This place is so special to us.”

The Pink Balloon Company Making Your Events Pop!
WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
Every day is cause for a celebration and no one knows this more than Sherrie Urbaszewski, founder and owner of The Pink Balloon in Barrington.
The Pink Balloon will take your event to that next level, providing custom balloon décor and installations. “We do everything from balloon arches and tablescape décor all the way to grand scale balloon garland installations for all of life’s celebrations. Every time I do an event, I learn something new, and that knowledge helps me push my business to the next level,” says Urbaszewski, who had her fourth child last summer.
After following various balloon and décor companies on Instagram, she realized “Hey, I can totally do this!”
“I’m a former teacher so I have a creative edge. Plus, I’ve always been a party planner, and I grew up with my mom, who is a huge entertainer.”
Fortuitously, just as Urbaszewski was opening her business, her friends were opening Kiddiewinks, the beautiful event space in downtown Barrington. It felt like kismet. Urbaszewski reached out to them and suggested they collaborate. “We’ve grown together since then and it’s been spilling out into the community as well.”
One thing is for certain, while balloon art can be light and fun Urbaszewski takes her business very seriously. She is constantly studying and taking continuing education classes to improve her craft. She gets to know each client and makes sure to personalize the décor accordingly, often going to the event space and creating custom mock-ups. Everything is personalized, whether to match the
client’s favorite colors or celebrate a special birthday.
Urbaszewski credits her passion for this business to how she was raised. “My parents always planned big parties that were over the top in terms of detail. I was raised helping my mom at these events and learned how to set a beautiful table-scape and add special touches to the event décor.”
There is not much that can illustrate both Urbaszewski and her family’s fundamental belief in the power of celebration more than the following story.
Celebrating all events, big or small, was basically her family’s mantra while she was growing up. This principle was thrown into high gear when the family received devastating news: Urbaszewski, just 27 years old at the time, was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Even when Urbaszewski was having a stem cell transplant, flowers, balloons and celebration were around to lighten the mood and lift her spirits. And she credits this positivity, along with the constant support of family and friends, as well as outstanding medical care, with her full recovery.
Although The Pink Balloon has really taken off, Urbaszewski is not one to rest on her laurels. She is always researching and coming up with new ways to grow her business. Stay tuned for her upcoming venture of online order processing and parties in a box, yet another way to ensure that the celebrations will never, ever stop.
