“We had the privilege of working with Cory for selling our property and brokering our deal on our new property. Right from the start he was very professional and extremely prepared. It was apparent he did his prework regarding the comps in our neighborhood. We went in with an asking price higher then I thought was possible and had offers within 24 hours. He was very approachable and extremely helpful during our whole process. He did everything from working the offer to coordinating various inspections. When done, he gave us a bottle of Champagne and a bottle of sparkling lemonade to celebrate our new house with the kids. Use Cory, you will not be disappointed.” -K.B.

The Seasoned Plate is a collection of delicious and healthy real food recipes sorted by season. Chef and author NICOLE PUTZEL loves to create seasonal, vegetablecentric recipes once a week, and during the summer months, the produce for the recipes is harvested from her backyard—truly organicgarden-to-plate dining. She started sharing the dishes with photographer Claudia Chocano who then styled the food in its true edible form—no tricks—and once they were satisfied with the visual appeal, Chocano photographed the dishes in natural, seasonal light. Once the photos had been taken, the two friends sat at the kitchen table and consumed the fruits of their labors. This cookbook is the result of a beautiful recipe: one of food, friendship, and wellness. Eat up! For more information, visit putzelkitchen.com.

IMPECCABLE TASTE
On a recent trip to Rome, I so enjoyed a “Blind Wine Tasting” led by the Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese’s expert sommelier CHIARA GIANNOTTI, who has received the recognition of Dame Chevalier de Champagne. She recently penned The Perfect Wine Cellar—The Ultimate Guide for Great Wine Collectors, which imagines an ideal wine cellar featuring a collection of the most expensive and prestigious wines from around the world. Every label having a great impact on the history of wine is included and examined. The volume analyzes the world of collectibles, significant trends, and major auction houses. It also contains beautiful photography of prominent collectors’ cellars and information about one-of-a-kind bottles that will help aspiring collectors navigate a world that has become increasingly exclusive. This is the perfect guide for avid wine collectors—many of whom reside on the North Shore. For more information visit, rizzoliusa.com.

SERVING WITH SONG
New Trier High School Senior LAUREN GOTTSHALL discovers how music can soothe the soul and change the world, one note at a time.
WORDS BY ALEXA BURNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARGlencoe’s Lauren Gottshall believes a song is only as good as the story it tells, which is why this young singer/songwriter is seeing to it that her music heals whenever it is heard.
Gottshall, a senior at New Trier High School, discovered a deep connection to music and in particular, songwriting while struggling with the emotions that come with life’s ups and downs.
“For as long as I can remember, music always resonated with me. But when my parents divorced, I discovered how music can heal,” Gottshall says. “I found it was easier to put my emotions into a song, rather than just talking about what was troubling me.”
As the dark days grew further and fewer between, Gottshall vowed to use her music as a way to help others. She began performing at charity functions such as the Park Ridge Vine Street BBQ where proceeds benefit multiple charities. Gottshall also became a regular performer at the historic Glencoe Grand Prix—a long-time fundraiser for the school district. By turning her music-making into a philanthropic endeavor, Gottshall discovered a new purpose in life.
“I have grown more and more interested in performing at events that are about giving to others. Music is so universal; you never know how lyrics can impact someone who is struggling. To know I can use my love for songwriting to support worthy causes designed to improve someone else’s life, is very rewarding,” Gottshall shares.
No sooner was Gottshall bitten by the benevolent bug than she learned the heartbreaking news that her grandmother had been diagnosed with lymphoma. Gottshall immediately sprang into action, joining Find a Cure—an organization comprised of Loyola and New Trier students who commit themselves to fighting cancer, particularly Leukemia and Lymphoma.
After organizing one philanthropic event after another on behalf of Find a Cure, Gottshall earned the title of Vice President during her Junior year. She made it her mission to combine her passion for songwriting with her commitment to service.
With her grandmother at the forefront of her mind, she spearheaded an annual Leukemia and Lymphoma fundraiser at the Writers Theatre in Glencoe. This past September was the second annual event, where guests enjoyed performances by a variety of Glencoe Academy of Music students and Gottshall herself. This year, Gottshall excitedly debuted her most recent song, “Better Luck,” an emotional and relatable ballad about being in the right
situation, but at the wrong time.
As it pertains to Gottshall’s music career, there is no doubt that the young artist is exactly in the place where she is meant to be at this point. She has overcome emotional hardship, soothed by the solace that notes can provide while discovering new meaning in her young life.
“What I’ve learned from creating these fundraisers is that one person can have a real impact. Getting involved in organizations and causes outside of myself has been truly rewarding,” Gottshall explains. “I realize the importance for all young people to find a cause and commit to it. Knowing I can make a difference for the better is incredibly fulfilling, giving me the same sense of joy that comes from putting a smile on someone’s face with my music.”

Two More Reasons To Call Lake Forest Home
Two things define Lake Forest. Our record as one of the safest communities around and the spirit of individuality running through our schools. They are the cornerstones of our community. It’s what happens in a city that looks out for each other, and in a community that creates a welcoming place to call home.

WORDS BY ALEXA BURNELL ART PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMIE BUZILfter pouring her heart into raising two children, Jamie Buzil decided to switch the lens in which she viewed herself, rediscovering a long, lost passion nestled into the right side of her brain.
“I was raised with a lot of creativity. My dad adored photography and we even had a darkroom in the house. I’ll never forget those first moments of watching an image come to life on a sheet of paper,” Buzil recalls. “My mom too was creative and resourceful. She sewed and needlepointed; she even made some of our clothes. From a very young age, I realized I too could be a creator, however, like many of my generation I scoffed at the idea that the arts could lead to a sustainable way of life. Instead, I chose a more traditional career

It wasn’t until Buzil’s children started lives of their own that she pursued Photoshop classes, followed by photography lessons in Evanston, Highland Park, the Chicago Botanic Garden, and Workshops from Filter Photo. Eventually, she earned a certificate in fine art photography, along with a new passion.
“I quickly fell in love with my new path. Photography nurtured my soul, giving me a sense of purpose,” Buzil explains. “I’ll be honest, watching my kids move on was depressing, but photography was cathartic and healing. The more classes I took, the more I felt fulfilled. I also received positive feedback from fellow students and instructors, motivating me to ask myself, ‘where is this going?’ ‘Can this be a self-sustaining way of life?’”
Along with sharpening her photography skills, Buzil remained open to another passion—nature, particularly flowers and the great outdoors. Through her artistry, she discovered ways to enhance the beauty that Mother Nature already provided.
“I have a deep love for flowers, so I began wandering gardens, taking hundreds of shots. At the same time, I learned a Photoshop technique called ‘dodge and burn,’ allowing me to accentuate the finest parts of a flower. I describe it as putting on the flower’s makeup. I highlight, I contour, I play with shadows. Essentially, I enhance what is already there,” Buzil shares.
With continued admiration from others, Buzil got down to the brass tacks of working on the business side of photography. She recently created a rudimentary studio in her garage, where she often photographs floral arrangements and other works of nature for various clients. She has learned her own handmade printing technique and even mastered a new skill called alternative transfer, allowing her to take a digital image and transfer it onto any object.
While she still prefers to be out in the field shooting nature in its most real state, she sees her studio space as an additional way
ART & ARTIST
to grow her business. Buzil has also taken a leap of faith, participating in her first art fair this past summer in Libertyville. Above all, she hopes her work provides value to her clients.
As for her photography journey, Buzil believes that seeing herself through a new lens, taught her more than she could have ever imagined.
“I realize that I am stronger than I ever knew I was. I’ve learned so much about myself and rediscovered a part of me that was al ways there,” Buzil notes. “My advice to anyone wondering what their next steps are is to focus on your true passion and run with it.”

“Reading is one of my passions and I enjoy a variety of genres. I loved e Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s sequel to e Handmaid’s Tale. e novel shows how Gilead was formed and ultimately dissolved using a character who was the primary antagonist in the series but reveals herself as a protagonist in the sequel. I also recently nished e Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates. e book tells inspiring stories showing how women who empower other women can change the world … even in extremely dire circumstances. I am currently reading Malcolm Gladwell’s new book Talking to Strangers, which is a fascinating read about miscommunication historically and today. As with his other books, Gladwell is a tremendous storyteller and reminds us how misreading others historically has shaped some of our world’s most signi cant events.”

“My husband and I share a passion for music. In fact, all three of our children have musical middle names re ecting songs or artists we love. For long runs, I listen to classic rock and my husband, Sean, created a great California mix for our annual run in Big Sur up the Paci c Coast Highway to Carmel. My favorite current contemporary artists are Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5 (love their new song “Memories”).”

I also follow our children’s colleges (University of Michigan and University of Southern California), and high school (Lake Forest Academy). e schools are really good at utilizing social media to publicize events on campus and I often know what is happening on campus before our children do. I enjoy reading the Wall Street Journal online and follow CNN for daily news. I also follow too many fashion, home, and interior design sites to mention. e pictures are like eye candy in my feed.”

FOOD & TRAVEL

ONWARD
A Sheridan Road outpost in Chicago moves beyond seasonal fare clichés.
WORDS BY PETER AND KATE MICHAEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARWhenever chef Patrick Russ surveyed the local dining scene on the far North Side of Chicago, he saw plenty of new restaurants but a noticeable dearth of ambitious ones. So when owner Michael Olszewski approached him about launching a new restaurant called Onward on Sheridan Road by Loyola University last year, he knew exactly what to do with it.
“I didn’t want to be esoteric,” says Russ, who’s best known for his roles as executive chef at Seven Lions and The Dawson in the city. “I wanted food that was approachable and familiar but would surprise people when it came to their table.”
Pleasant surprises abound at Onward, from stellar homemade
LOLA ROSA SALAD
Behold, the Greek salad reborn: a colorful tower of frilly greens that sprouts with all sorts of interesting acidic treats: turmeric cauliflower, Kalamata olives, dry feta, pickled shallots plus crispy chickpeas so good they deserve space in your local grocer’s snack aisle. In other hands, this would be a one-note brine-on-brine affair, but each bowl is frosted with a creamy hummus-romesco blend. It’s a scene-stealer—every bit as rich as a bowl of Southern Grits— which provides the perfect counterbalance of peppery sweetness and cool cream.
pastas, creative desserts from North Shore native Kevin McCormick (try the spumoni-inspired gelato cake) and a suave and sophisticated bar program from GM and beverage director Vicente Romero, who’s currently shaking up a liquid apple pie sipper made with rum, apple syrup, and Cocchi Americano that’s as comforting as a crisp winter afternoon but never cloying.
Together they’ve managed to stay true to their promise: making the familiar delightfully fresh and at times, welcomingly unpredictable.
AUTUMN CARAMELLE
Onward’s shape-shifting pasta program reinvents itself anew every season, transforming from summary green chitarra (made from tomato leaves) to a hearty saffron-duck pappardelle. This fall’s marque offering is inspired by—of all things—the contents of a holiday candy bowl. Note the bright colors of Russ’s caramelle: stuffed pastas shaped to look like foil-wrapped candies. Those beautiful hues—crimson, gold, and copper—are the product of folding harissa, turmeric, and pumpkin into the kitchen’s handmade dough. The pasta bundles are packed with a creamy bullseye of charred eggplant and black garlic, then tangled in slices of fairytale eggplant (a particularly subtle varietal) topped with homemade ricotta salata, puffy quinoa, and preserved lemons. The results? A deconstructed eggplant lasagna with extra oomph.
BAVETTE STEAK
You’d think a riff on a classic Chicago favorite—good old steak and potatoes— would have to be as heavy as an anchor. Not so here. The white soubise-looking sauce is made from potatoes that have been sheared with cream and turned into a foam via an ISI whip cream canister. The result is a ghostly form of garlic mashed potatoes with all the flavor but half the guilt. Add two nutty elements (brown buttered mushrooms and a hazelnut gremolata) and you have a rich classic that will have you floating on air.

PORCINI, PERCY, PEARLS, and a PRINCESS
Embark upon a Roman Holiday curated by Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese.
WORDS BY MORGAN HOGERTY“Go thou to Rome,—at once the Paradise.” Enchanted by Rome’s unique blend of antiquity and modernity, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley proclaimed the Eternal City to be an earthly paradise. Guests of the Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese are sure to be similarly enchanted by a complete redesign that pays tribute to the hotel’s storied past as a Roman palazzo while satisfying every modern need. Light-drenched rooms feature hand-painted ceilings that speak to the building’s 19th century roots while spacious marble bathrooms are decidedly 21st century. Suites featuring expansive living rooms, dual balconies, half baths, and twin wet bars might tempt a guest to stay in. Fortunately, a guest of the Sof-
itel Rome Villa Borghese doesn’t have to stray far. The hotel’s location on a quiet city street belies its proximity to some of Rome’s favorite attractions—the Trevi Fountain, Villa Medici, Borghese Gardens, Spanish Steps, and even the home of a princess.
Rome is a city visited by many but only truly experienced by a few. For travelers seeking an intimate Roman experience, the Sofitel’s well-connected concierge staff can craft an itinerary providing opportunities like no other. Such experiences are destined to become the ultimate souvenir—cherished memories.
For gourmands wishing to savor Italy’s rich culinary history, the hotel concierge is adept at both recommending dining options and securing reservations. A wonderful start, however, is the Sofitel’s own rooftop lounge and restaurant—Settimo. The only
risk to beginning a dining journey at Settimo is one may choose to never venture further such are the allures of the menu’s contemporary take on traditional Roman dishes like rich oxtail broth ravioli, stuffed zucchini blossoms, and lightly fried anchovies. Settimo’s elegant outdoor terrace is the place to experience a Roman sunset. The sun’s descent over St. Peter’s Basilica turns the sky the brilliant red of a Cardinal’s cloak. Toasting this miracle with a cocktail as potent as it is pretty is the quintessential Roman moment.
Cooks hoping to connect with Italian culture through a handson culinary experience will delight in a day spent with the chefs of Trustever Tastes. After selecting fresh produce from one of Rome’s oldest fresh-air markets and browsing at cheese, meat, and bread shops, guests are guided to a 15th century building
overlooking a square often described as Rome’s most beautiful. Behind the building’s picturesque facade, a state-of-the art kitchen becomes home for the next few hours as dishes like fresh porcini ravioli and raspberry-studded fennel salad are prepared alongside the friendly Trustever Tastes’ chefs. Lunch follows in a sunny dining room where the clinking of wine glasses and the sounds of laughter seem to synchronize with the chiming church bells of the square’s Basilica di Santa Maria, one of Rome’s oldest churches.
Bibliophiles will delight in an exclusive walking tour designed by Imago Artis that takes advantage of the Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese’s close proximity to the historic Keats-Shelley House. Located a mere eight-minute walk from the hotel, the Keats-Shelley House is perched at the base of the Spanish Steps. While the Spanish Steps bustle with excited tourists taking selfies and weary tourists trying to evade policemen enforcing the new regulation against sitting on the fabled steps, the Keats-Shelley House’s atmosphere is quiet, dark, and somber. Yet, this atmosphere is quickly enlivened by the skilled narrative of an Imago Artis guide. Using the museum’s collection of manuscripts, letters, and paintings—the world’s most extensive—the guide illuminates the lives of the Romantic poets and Rome devotees John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley.
History buffs will be particularly interested in two outings planned by the hotel’s concierge staff; one within and one outside the city’s famed Aurelian Walls. The first outing highlights Bulgari: The History, The Dream exhibit at Castel Sant’Angelo located a short distance from Vatican City on the right bank of the Tiber. Showcasing the most exquisite pieces from the Italian jeweler’s 100-year history, the blockbuster exhibit draws long lines of impatient visitors. Sofitel guests, however, are whisked past the
crowds to find themselves within Castel Sant’Angelo, a looming building first constructed in 123 AD to serve as the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum. Converted into a papal castle and fortress during the 14th century, the elaborately painted walls of papal apartments and state rooms provide the backdrop to an array of glittering Bulgari treasures—an intriguing juxtaposition of religious and secular beauty. Outside the city’s walls the Appian Way, built in 312 BC as Europe’s first super highway, is still in use. A stroll down the Appian Way’s wide, black basalt pavers as a witty, knowledgeable private guide explains the ancient Roman ruins and Christian catacombs dotting the surrounding landscape is time travel of the most pleasant sort.
Connoisseurs of both art and charm will be enchanted by a private visit to the acclaimed Villa Aurora hosted by Her Serene Highness Rita Boncompagni Ludovisi, Principessa di Piombino; another rare opportunity deftly secured by the hotel concierge. Located just footsteps from Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese’s entrance, Villa Aurora’s grounds are accessed through an imposing iron gate normally shuttered to all but invited guests. At the top of a winding staircase carved into a rocky grotto, Villa Aurora awaits upon a grassy terrace dotted with ancient busts and priceless sculptures including a satyr by Michelangelo.
Many of the vast rooms’ ceilings are exquisitely painted but Villa Aurora’s rarest treasure is found on the ceiling of one of its smaller rooms. An anteroom on the villa’s second floor is home to Jupiter, Pluto, and Neptune, the only ceiling ever painted by the Baroque master Caravaggio. The 1597 painting is intensely personal as Caravaggio used his own 23-year-old likeness as a model for all three of the bearded, muscular, naked gods.
While Villa Aurora is incomparable—its grounds and interiors have been described as a living timeline of Western art—Princess Rita’s warmth, intellect, and dedication are equally incomparable. Built in 1570, Villa Aurora is a short walk from the Trevi Fountain. The location is fitting as over 50 years ago the princess—then Rita Carpenter of Austin, Texas—made a wish at the fountain to “marry an Italian and return to Italy to live forever.” Her wish came true when she met Prince Nicolò Boncompagni Ludovisi in 2003. Prince Nicolò, a descendent of two popes, died in 2018 but Princess Rita’s devotion to Villa Aurora and her husband remains fervent. Whether recounting the story of a quintet of quibbling Baroque artists who simultaneously painted the sitting room’s ceiling fresco or recalling her handsome husband while straightening a family photo, Princess Rita radiates appreciation and love. Rome is full of masterpieces but to see masterpieces in a setting so intimate with a princess as one’s guide is a memory to be forever cherished and the souvenir of a lifetime.

Holiday Wine & Cheese Pairings
Caputo Cheese President Natale Caputo curates the perfect pairings for holiday entertaining.
WORDS BY NATALE CAPUTO DEER PATH INN IN LAKE FOREST COURTESY OF CAPUTO CHEESETERLATO VINEYARDS PINOT GRIGIO FRIULI & CAPUTO HANDDIPPED RICOTTA
Only the finest estate-grown Pinot Grigio grapes from northeast Italy’s premium growing region make it into the bottle. At first sip, this wine is surprisingly full-bodied with the aromas of ripe white peaches and spring flowers. The flavors of melon, pear, and crisp apple support this wine’s slate finish, making it a beautiful match for the Caputo fresh Ricotta. Caputo fresh Ricotta is ladled by hand into individual baskets, the cheese’s delicate curds remain soft and moist. With the flavor and aroma of fresh milk, this spoonable cheese is magnificent on its own with fresh fruit, honey, or used for decadent cannoli.
FROG’S LEAP SAUVIGNON BLANC & CYPRESS GROVE HUMBOLDT FOG
This wine is crafted from 100 percent organic grapes primarily from the Rutherford region of Napa Valley. A wine that is genuinely fun to drink with a crisp flavor, slightly acidic on the tongue, and modest alcohol content makes it ideal for enjoying with food. This Sauvignon Blanc’s stone fruit aromas and crisp sweet/tart apple flavors balance with its minerality to pair perfectly with Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog.
California’s Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog is a true American original. Inspired by northern California’s rocky, mist-shrouded coast, this cheese starts as a layer cake of fresh chevre, then transforms over time into a decadent brie-style cheese. When fresh, bright almost citrus-like acidity and a firm crumbly/creamy center are a delight
SAY CHEESE
with prosciutto and pears. As the cream line beneath the rind ripens, softens, and intensifies, the cheese becomes lusher and more robust with grass notes and a fudgy texture, perfect for figs and roasted vegetables.
MEROTTO LA PRIMAVERA DI BARBARA PROSECCO DOCG & DELICE DE BOURGOGNE
On the northern edge of Italy where it begins to climb the Alps, crafted from a blend of Glera and Perera grapes, a wonderfully elegant Prosecco starts with an aroma of apricots and pears perfumed with summery rose. The flavor balances crisp, sweet apple with a lively soft bubble texture reminiscent of caviar making this wine an indulgent match for the decadent Delice De Bourgogne.
From the home of Pinot Noir and Champagne comes the Delice de Bourgogne, a rich triple crème brie. The fresh milk is boosted first with cream, and then with cultured Crème Fraiche to produce the distinctly tangy, but velvety texture and flavor. Lovely all year round, Delice is especially welcome when summer is a memory and friends and family gather to celebrate.
ROMBAUER VINEYARDS ZINFANDEL &WIDMER’S 4-YEAR CHEDDAR
From gnarly old vines around Napa Valley, California, this bold Zinfandel inspires big, full glasses, loud conversation, and abundant snacking. Warm baking spices mixed with blackberry and dark raspberry perfume this wine while the concentrated flavors of roasted plums, blackberries, white pepper, and vanilla land on the tongue. A full round tannic structure needs a match like the Widmer’s 4-year aged cheddar.
Wisconsin’s Widmer’s cheddars capture the Dairy State’s classic flavor. Described by Joseph Harding in 1864 as “close and firm in texture, yet mellow in character or quality; it is rich with a tendency to melt in the mouth, the flavor full and fine, approaching to that of a hazelnut,” cheddar is such a part of our palette that to explain it is more fuss than to just enjoy it. Widmer’s 4-year aged cheddar is particularly sharp with scattered crystals, yet creamy on the tongue, making it a favorite with grilled meats, hearty vegetables, and sweet fruits.
MASTROJANNI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG & SARTORI BALSAMIC BELLAVITANO
This is a classic Sangiovese wine from the heart of its traditional growing region in Tuscany. Aged for 36 months in oak barrels and conditioned for another 6 in the bottle, the deep red hued wine reveals its Brunello nature with a forthright structure beneath the flavors of wild berries, plum, and tobacco, with notes of violet, vanilla, and dark cherry in the aroma. A long, silky finish and modest acidity help compliment hearty winter meals.
A classic wine with hidden depths pairs well with a classic cheese given modern complexity: the Sartori Balsamic BellaVitano.
Wisconsin’s Sartori cheese company produced traditional Italian favorites throughout most of the 20th century before imagining something almost entirely new for the 21st. The BellaVitano cheeses start as a Parmesan-style cheese with a Wisconsin cheddar personality before getting rubbed down with sweet and tart balsamic vinegar that perfumes every bite. Nutty, moderately sharp, and sweet, Balsamic BellaVitano is well suited for grating, but perfect for any cheeseboard alongside summer tomatoes, winter figs, and speck smoked ham.
MUSELLA AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA & BEEMSTER XO GOUDA
Using estate-grown Corvina and Rondinella grapes from the classic Valpolicella growing region of Verona, Italy, this Amarone invites you to pause and savor the moment. No part of its crafting or aging is rushed—the grapes are nearly raisins when crushed and aged for three years before arriving in your glass. Aromas of blueberry compote, fudge, and leather perfume the rich cassis, black plum, and baking spice flavored wine. Its velvety, rich mouthfeel is a hallmark of its impeccable structure. The sweetness and depth of flavor, still savory, pair magnificently with the deep butterscotch and hazelnut character of the Beemster XO Gouda.
Holland’s Beemster cheeses bring a little celebration every day. While many of their offerings began as recipes for festivals, harvests, and holidays, the crown jewel remains their 26-month aged Gouda. Its deep amber hue studded with twinkling crystals smells of baked flan and barrel-aged whiskey. The dense cheese flakes under a sharp knife then melts in the mouth with a fudge-like richness with notes of butterscotch, burnt sugar, and cooked cream. Delicious on its own or with roasted meats, crisp apples, and sweet ripe pears.
Caputo Cheese Market is located at 231 E. Wisconsin Avenue, Lake Forest, 847-482-0100, caputocheesemarket.com.
CUSTOMMADE COMFORT
HOME TOUR
Kerry and Sarah Wood, along with renowned designer, Julia Buckingham, hit a home run when they created an elegant home reflective of what matters most—family.
WORDS BY ALEXA BURNELL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY VHT STUDIOSIf walls could talk, then Winnetka’s 884 Higginson Road would tell the tale of a family whose commitment to quality is as equally important as creating a livable, lovable place to call home.
While current owners Kerry and Sarah Wood may be best known for his successful career in major league baseball, their home embraces the real values that this influential couple holds dear. Their strong commitment to philanthropy and their deep devotion to raising their three children is reflected in the thoughtful and personalized details of this Heritage Builders Luxury Home.
“I absolutely loved working on this home because the family was committed to ensuring each and every detail fit their individual needs,” designer Julia Buckingham explains. “Kerry and Sarah love to entertain and they cherish family. They wanted their home to be a place to relax, enjoy family and friends, and build long-lasting memories.”
For Buckingham, transforming the Wood home presented an
interesting juxtaposition between the home’s stoic exterior and the wish to make the home a place to play.
To make for a subtle transition from outdoor to indoor, Buckingham suggested a blue-gray exterior sash box window, giving visitors the first clue that something intriguing and joyful awaits them inside.
Upon entering, continued snippets of grays and blues, particularly in the window dressings, rugs, and throw pillows, provide a natural flow. Around the bend, a sizable kitchen with an impressive 13-foot kitchen island reflects Sarah’s love for cooking and entertaining. Upon closer look, the island is capped with an elegant, high-quality quartz countertop, infused with the same speckles of grays, blues, and silvers seen elsewhere in the home. Adding a completely unique flair to the kitchen is a cozy custom-designed eating nook, where the family gathers for those relaxed, everyday meals. The nook is bordered by sizable windows, allowing natural light to warm the room. Eye-catching window dressings enhance the space, blending tradition with a whimsical feel that Buckingham says defines the entire home.
When the weather cooperates, the indoor eating and entertaining space naturally flows outdoors. An impressive garden added by the Wood family, offers homegrown fresh produce and easy access to the kitchen. In summer, dinners are often under the pergola where a nearby grill, smoker, and coal-fire pizza oven offer plenty of opportunities to cook outdoors. An al fresco sitting area infuses the same blue and gray color scheme seen within the home and the nearby fireplace extends cozy evenings into the fall.
Of particular interest to Realtor Jena Radnay of @Properties is the lower level. She explains how the downstairs quarters are beyond compare. “While a signature of the Heritage homes is lower-level living, Kerry and Sarah took that concept and hit a grand slam, making their home unlike any other. One room contains all of Kerry’s memorabilia, while next door a comfortable, cozy theater room provides an escape for the whole family. Essentially,
the lower-level is a complete destination with fitness room, sauna, and indoor basketball court. Each and every detail is exquisite, reflective of the family’s wish for their home to be their haven,” Radnay says.
Perhaps the most unique feature of the space down below is a colorful and lively craft room, where Sarah and the children love to create and play. “Sarah was highly involved in the craft room, seeing it as a wonderful place for her children to get lost in imagination. There is a place for every pencil, every crayon, every piece of tape. The room is colorful and provides a surprise to all who visit the Wood’s home,” Buckingham explains. “In addition, Sarah is one who takes time and care to select and wrap presents for others. The full-functioning wrapping-paper station means her goal to wrap each gift with love is possible.”
Tying it all together are the impressively high ceilings that Kerry requested, allowing for ample light to flood the home. It is this feature, along with so many others that led Radnay to define 884 Higginson as “the happiest home on the block.”

WORDS BY SHERRY THOMASThe year was 1922 and the venerable Chicago Tribune was about to celebrate its 75th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the publisher announced an international competition for what would be its dazzling new headquarters at 435 N. Michigan Avenue.
News of the competition quickly spread around the globe. Tribune corporation magnates sought not only the most beautiful building in Chicago, but one that rival some of the most famous structures in the world. $100,000 in prize money was offered, eliciting more than 260 entries from 23 countries.
The winner was a Gothic revival design by New York architects John Mead Howells and Raymond M. Hood, utilizing Indiana limestone, Art Deco details, and embedding stones from historic monuments and battlefields—including Bunker Hill, Omaha Beach, Westminster Abbey, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Kremlin. Even the building’s iconic “crown” paid homage to the 13th century Rouen Cathedral in France.
Today, as the storied media enterprise has relocated elsewhere in the city, property owners and co-developers CIM Group and Golub & Company are reimagining a bright new (and very luxurious) future for this Magnificent Mile landmark.
A diverse array of distinctive, one-of-a-kind, luxury condominiums in this historic building are now available for purchase.
A nearly centuryold building with the most storied history in Chicago is getting a new life as one of the most luxurious, opulent condominium enclaves in the nation. Residences in this 34-floor, Gothic revival landmark (and former home of the Chicago Tribune) are now available for sale.
Priced from the $900,000s to more than $7 million, buyers can enjoy lavish amenities in the city’s most premier location while still honoring the heritage of the historic building.
“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in a one-of-akind building with an amazing historic pedigree,” says Lee Golub, principal, executive vice president of Golub & Company. “This will never come about again.”
The reinvigorated Tribune Tower will include 162 residences with 56 meticulously designed one to four-plus bedroom floor plans. A sales gallery on the 28th floor brings the unique floor plans to life, sparing no opulent detail.
Residents of Tribune Tower will have access to four levels of unrivaled amenities, including a luxury suite of spa amenities, state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool, driving range simulator, co-working lounge, meeting rooms, entertainment areas, and event spaces complete with a bar and prep kitchen. A private courtyard will offer access to the residential outdoor oasis—a rare luxury in the city. A terrace with outdoor grilling stations, as well as a sun deck provide additional spaces for residents to entertain and soak up Chicago’s warm summer months.
To top it all off (literally and figuratively), a 25th floor Crown Lodge suite and terrace will offer intimate seating and dining areas framed by the stunning flying buttresses and provides 360° views of the city. Wow.
Located at the intersection of the Magnificent Mile and Chicago River, Tribune Tower is at the heart of Chicago within walking distance to the city’s arts, culture, retail, and dining destinations,
making it the ideal residence for the cultural connoisseur, avid shopper, gourmet, or downtown professional.
One glimpse at the renderings shown here is enough to confirm that the sources are spot-on. This could very well be the opportunity of the century.
Colonel McCormick would be proud.
The Tribune Tower sales gallery is located on the 28th floor of the building at 401 N. Michigan Avenue in Chicago. For an appointment, call 312-967-3700 or visit tribunetower.com.
SPIRITED DUO
Husband and wife duo Chris Barbin and Lori Csaszar’s love affair with premium sipping tequila began after spending the better half of the last decade traveling throughout Mexico for both business and pleasure. “We fell in love with the people, the culture, and the spirit of Mexico,” says Csaszar.
“Both Lori and I have a combined 50-plus years in the tech industry,” says Barbin. “However, a few years ago while we dined at one of our favorite local tequila bar and restaurants, Wilmette’s Depot Nuevo Restaurant, we discussed ‘what’s next’ for us after we sold my tech business. It was a funny light bulb moment as we sipped our tequila and jointly made the decision to venture into the world of the premium spirit.”
The couple can now safely say all of the tequilas they sipped along their journey were in the name of research. In January 2018, the serial entrepreneurs along with their team set out to redefine the tequila experience with the launch of SipTequila.com, a direct-to-consumer platform focused on bringing hand-curated, super-premium, and boutique tequilas to market in the U.S., as well as Compoveda Tequila, their private label, a luxury extra añejo tequila made to be both sipped and shared. Their primary vision is to educate the U.S. market on a very misunderstood spirit and to introduce a premium sipping tequila that will open the minds of skeptical spirit and wine consumers.
Their U.S. operation is headquartered in Stuart, Florida, where Compoveda Tequila is distributed across the U.S. They partnered with a boutique distillery in El Arenal, Jalisco, Mexico, owned by the Partida family. The family has been producing tequila for two decades and were agave farmers for three decades prior.
Winnetka’s CHRIS BARBIN and LORI CSASZAR redefine the tequila experience.
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORGE ARANAIt was a strategic choice, as ‘family’ is one of the core values for both SipTequila.com and Compoveda. The Partidas help the local SipTequila.com team, as well as the team in the U.S. find limited-batch, family-centric craft tequilas to bring to market while also producing Compoveda.
“We source small boutique brands that would have a hard time coming to market otherwise, and we generally offer about 25 rotating tequilas at any given time,” says Barbin. “Part of the process is taste testing, and I like to say I’m the Chairman and CTO. That is, Chief Tasting Officer.”
With Compoveda, the goal was to create a tequila that’s as flavorful and sophisticated to drink as a high-end wine, whiskey, or bourbon. Both Barbin and Csaszar believe tequila to be a misunderstood flavor profile and that there are countless parallels to the wine industry.
“The wine industry went through a significant education phase 20-30 years ago,” explains Barbin. “Now most people know the difference between a pinot and a merlot but can’t tell the difference between a reposado and an extra añejo tequila. We feel like we’re skating ahead of the puck of a significant industry trend and want to be a primary education platform.”
Compoveda rests for upwards of five years in red wine barrels from California before sitting in new heavy charred oak barrels for up to another year. The result? A super-smooth, layered tequila with hints of vanilla, maple, brown spice, and oak. The perfect balance and flavor profile for those who love brown spirits and premium wines.
“Another reason I personally fell in love with the spirit, and one of the reasons tequila is currently the fastest-growing spirit on the market, representing 10 percent of the overall spirits market, is because of the many health benefits,” says Csaszar. “It’s the only spirit that is 100 percent gluten-free, aids in digestion, is both a probiotic and prebiotic, and actually speeds up your metabolism— in moderation, of course. It also has been studied for its positive effect on diseases like type 2 diabetes, dementia, and osteoporosis.”
Not only is tequila good for you, but they also believe it should be good for the community. One of the most pressing needs across both rural and developed Mexico is access to clean water. Their business donates proceeds from every 750ml Compoveda Tequila bottle sale to the purchase and installation of residential and school-sized rainwater harvesting systems through Isla Urbana, a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to bringing rainwater harvesting systems to needy communities in Mexico, which then provides a sustainable, clean source of water. They want to ensure their donation is going back to the communities and families that produce and support the spirit.
“Chris and I have similar passions but different interests,” says Csaszar. “As the head of corporate giving for our brand, I focus on the giving back aspect and core values of the business. And as one of the co-founders of the business, I promote our brand and sell to corporate clients organizing private events and tastings or arranging corporate gifting opportunities. We’re learning for the first time how to work with each other and had to quickly define our roles. We have to be very clear with each other whether we’re wearing our ‘work hat’ or our ‘husband or wife hat.’ There was a learning curve and not something we did from the outset. But at least now, he knows I’m always right!” She laughs.
Barbin concurs (with a grin). “We have complementary skill sets,” he says. “Lori, I often joke, is the best lead generator in the world. She’ll meet someone new on an airplane and sell them a case of tequila by the end of the flight. I get on an airplane and immediately put in my headphones. I’m much more of an introvert, and she’s an extrovert, I’m an operator, she’s sales and marketing—in many ways it’s all very complementary.”
One responsibility they share, though, is that of raising their three kids in Winnetka. Two are in college, one at Butler University and one at the University of Illinois in Champaign, with the youngest being a junior at New Trier High School in Winnetka. They also recently built and opened a 140 seat lakeside restaurant, ThunderBoss Bar & Grill, in Green Lake, Wisconsin in the summer of 2018. “We started that at the same time we launched the tequila business, which was a relatively large undertaking,” says Barbin. “In hindsight, not something we’d do again.”
The family loves water sports, including wake surfing, international travel, and meeting new people, preferably over a glass of tequila. “When we offer friends and family who are unfamiliar with premium sipping tequilas to try our Compoveda Tequila, they sometimes cringe,” says Csaszar. “They immediately think of the tequila shots they were forced to do in college. But what we are offering, is not the stuff you shoot back with salt and lime or stir in sugar or mixers to cover up the taste. Our tequila is one to be sipped, savored, and shared. It has surprised and delighted our friends, family, and now, our loyal consumers.”

ALL RISE FOR RACHEL CANNON
Winnetka’s RACHEL CANNON provides a glimpse into the high stakes field of law.
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMESRachel Cannon, a partner at Dentons, which calls Willis Tower home in Chicago, comes from a long line of lawyers and judges, so one could say the law is in her DNA. And while she’s also had a University of Chicago Law School education, Cannon still picked up a few tricks for her law career in an unexpected place.
“I finished college a year early, which was kind of a surprise and not intentional,” says Cannon. “I ended up working several waitressing jobs where I honed my people-reading skills. I could tell within five minutes of talking to someone at a table whether or not they’d be a good tipper. It’s helped me with juries. When you pick a jury, you literally only have a few minutes of seeing someone talk before you decide whether they’ll be helpful to your case or harmful.”
For Cannon, every second counts. She works in Dentons’ high-stakes Litigation and Dispute Resolution and White Collar and Government Investigations practices, where she focuses on trial work, investigations, complex civil litigation, and white collar criminal defense. She was one of the lead attorneys who successfully prevented the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission from enjoining a Chicago trader in a recent high-profile ‘spoofing’ and market manipulation case (CFTC v. Igor B. Oystacher and 3Red Trading, LLC); has investigated matters ranging from sexual misconduct to financial fraud and bribery; and also advises entrepreneurs about regulatory issues surrounding initial coin offerings, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain technology.
Before joining Dentons four years ago, Cannon served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Chicago, where she supervised the bankruptcy fraud program and worked in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Section. She’s tried 19 jury trials, dozens of bench trials, and has briefed and argued numerous cases in the U.S. Court of Appeals.
“Internal investigations and trial work are my bread and butter,” says Cannon. “I love to read, so I enjoy the ‘detective novel’ aspect of internal investigations and following the thread to figure out who’s being truthful and who isn’t. It’s very conspiratorial. And I enjoy being people’s advocate in court and the theater and drama of the courtroom. It’s all about portraying your story in the most interesting and compelling way possible.”
Recently, Cannon concluded an internal investigation for a Chicago professional sports team that had a coach on staff who was accused of sexual impropriety. “When organizations discover they have a problem, they want to figure out how it happened, who’s responsible, who did or didn’t know, and who kept it secret,” explains Cannon. “I report to the organization what happened, and they decide what to do with that information. The goal is to figure out the problem and then fix it.”
Cannon has always been a problem-solver, and one current issue she’s hoping to tackle is the lack of equal representation of women in law. Cannon remembers, when interviewing with law firms, sharing a business plan of her contacts with the managing partner of what she describes as a “major Chicago law firm.”
The managing partner’s response? “Oh, are these all of your husband’s friends?”
Cannon says that kind of thing happens all the time. “I asked someone at another firm if they had a need for more women partners, and he said, ‘Oh, no, we’re good on that score,’” recalls Cannon. “I said, ‘Oh, you have 50 percent?’ and he looked at me like I had six heads and replied, ‘No, we’re like everyone else, we have 20 percent.’ I mean, are we not speaking the same language?”
While Cannon believes there’s progress being made—she’s a partner, after all—she feels responsible for mentoring younger women within the office and in the broader legal community more generally, describing mentorship as “integral to any woman’s success.”
“I think, historically, men have done a much better job of mentoring other men and networking,” says Cannon. “It’s ingrained in them. They’re trained to do that, and do it naturally. Women dig in and work hard, but that’s not how a lot of big decisions, hires, and promotions are made. It often happens at the networking level.”
That said, Cannon is an active member of the Chicago philanthropic community and serves on the Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Women’s Board of the Joffrey Ballet, on the board of directors for the Chicago Bar Foundation, which funds pro bono legal services for some of Chicago’s poorest and most vulnerable residents, and is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago.
“I’ve always loved the arts,” says Cannon. “I studied art history in Florence in college and took ballet growing up. Chicago has such a vibrant arts culture, and it’s nice to be involved in organizations that are different than your day-to-day job. I like having a mix of legal and non-legal charitable work.”
With what little free time she has, Cannon loves to meditate, exercise, and read for pleasure, ideally all in one rare perfect day. She even has a small meditation and exercise room in the basement of her Winnetka home. While exercising, she’ll watch the OWN Network’s SuperSoul Sunday, a show that features Oprah Winfrey interviewing athletes, business and political leaders, and others about their lives, to start her day right.
“I deal with very stressful situations at work and often see people at their worst moments,” says Cannon. “I might have to tell someone they’re going to prison or their company is about to be sued in a massive lawsuit. It’s important I don’t get sucked into their stress and am able to give dispassionate advice. Meditation helps me keep a distance from those emotions.”
Despite the stress, she still enjoys being in private practice and being able to advise and partner with her clients in what she calls a ‘consigliere’ role. “Not to get too Godfather-ish,” Cannon jokes.
“But it’s funny how, over the course of your career, things end up mattering in a way you never expected,” says Cannon. “I had a project a few years ago where I went to Ukraine to train prosecutors and their FBI equivalent in how to do corruption investigations, and now that’s at the center of the current impeachment inquiry. It’s amazing where things will take you in ways you never imagined at the time.”

THE STORIED HANDBAGS OF ANGELA ALVAREZ
If handbags could talk, what tales would they tell? That, of course, depends on provenance. A tote from Ferragamo speaks of Italy. A purse from Balenciaga, of Spain. But lightly clutch one of the beautiful bags of Lake Forest-based designer Angela Alvarez, and you hear whispers of a story that spans generations and connects the Americas.
When Alvarez was a little girl in Leon, Nicaragua, family gatherings were vibrant affairs full of art, literature, poetry, and politics. Alvarez’s mother Evangelina Sacasa, was well-known in the city for her stories imbued with the myth and shadow of magical realism. Her grandparents were poets, aunts and uncles were painters and sculptors, and her great uncle was none other than Salomon de la Selva, world-renowned for his Pan American poetry, and his long-lasting love affair with Edna St. Vincent Millay.
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES“Those nights always ended with poetry,” says Alvarez. “I thought the recitations boring when I was very little,” she laughs, “but as I grew, I grew to love them.”
The deep artistic impressions made then became buried memories for Alvarez, torn from her homeland with her family when they fled to America during Nicaragua’s political upheaval in 1979. It would be two decades before it was safe for her to return.
“It was soul-moving,” she recalls, “to go back to this place that had been kept alive in memory only, for twenty years. I went back, and everywhere I turned, there was confirmation that all I had been carrying in my head, was actually real.”
For Alvarez, who had spent the intervening decades focused on the practicalities of a career as a teacher, plus raising a family, the soul-stirring return to Nicaragua, brought much to the surface. Not the least of which was her appreciation and love for the work of the artisans there, and, a desire, much like her famous great uncle’s long-ago passion, to advocate for beneficial exchange between the Americas.
“In my mother’s time, Nicaragua was almost fairytale-like in its approach to fine craftsmanship,” says Alvarez. “It wasn’t a wealthy country, but they did something very well: Different groups of artisans were gathered together in specific towns. There were vil-

lages full of master shoemakers, where the head artisan trained in Italy. There were towns of dressmakers, trained in Spain and lace makers trained in France. And there were the handbag makers. The work ethic, discipline, and fine-craftsmanship of these artisans were beautiful to behold. That didn’t change.”
So it was that on one of Alvarez’s subsequent trips, she stumbled upon an artisan who was the son of a master-artisan-trained handbag-maker.
“I saw his work and it was wonderful,” she recalls. “His designs were not very current but were exquisitely crafted. I knew that Nicaragua had access to beautiful crocodile skins, and right there, on the spot, I thought: “Let’s marry these two together and add a little flair. Clean up the line in the design, and let the craftsmanship and fine materials be the focus.”
Alvarez sketched some simple designs, and asked the artisan if he would try making them for her to market in the U.S. The artisan said, “Yes!” and so was born Angela Alvarez, Ltd., maker of fine custom handbags she sells by appointment through studios in her two homes, one in Lake Forest, and one in Chicago.
From the start, “I knew this would not just be about the bags, or me,” says Alvarez. “It had to be about the people. It was about the impact that I could have in these artisans’ lives, these people doing great work but with no way to expose it. I wanted to share their art.”
Toward that end, Alvarez now employs 36 artisans, split between two shops, 16 in Nicaragua, and another 20 in Bogota, Colombia.
“I developed a sense for finding these artisans,” says Alvarez. “Starting with one person who had three people in his shop in Nicaragua. Then I visited Colombia, where they have perfected the art of making exotic skin handbags.”
The workshop in Colombia, says Alvarez, employs mostly women. “Women who are heads of households. There, I met a community of Wayuu Indians, who create a gorgeous fabric handwoven from a single thread. I love to take their work and present it in a format not seen before. I mix it with crocodile skin and other mediums to make handbags that showcase and complement their handiwork.”
Designing her bags, Alvarez says she takes a lot of inspiration from historic fashions, keeping designs classic and clean. “I love vintage Balenciaga, for example, and I take a lot of inspiration from the historic bags I might see during visits to London’s Portobello Market or the Marche Aux Puces in Paris or El Rastro in Madrid. Artists I get inspiration from are names that are not recognizable necessarily.” And while she doesn’t have design training, Alvarez says she is, naturally inclined to drawing and has a pretty clear idea of what she likes to see.
Currently, Alvarez’s line includes 20 styles of handbags, 15 day clutches, 10 evening clutches, plus totes, belt bags, and crossbody bags. She adds different pieces or creates iterations of existing bags, seasonally. “For example, I have a Roma tote that is classic with linen and crocodile for the summer and in crocodile or pebble leather and cashmere for the fall and winter. Next summer we will have it in coconut palm.”
Beyond crocodile, exotic materials she likes to work with include lizard, ostrich, and python. Non-exotics include hairon-hide animal prints including new Italian cheetah and zebra patterns. There is also Saffiano leather, buttery soft Napa leather, and lambskin.
Hardware for the bags is sourced in Italy. Leather, often in Spain. “Each place I visit, I see materials that would be beautiful here. Things we don’t see in the U.S., perhaps. I love incorporating those unique elements into the line. It’s like finding treasures. And sometimes, they truly are: I don’t mass produce anything.”
The unique stories Alvarez’s bags tell will continue to evolve with the seasons and the needs of her clientele. “I think that handbags are the cherry on top. I love that we can wear something neutral, noncommittal, and minimalist and then with that handbag, show a flash of our personality. It’s a place where we can be playful and personal. A joyful expression.”

PRESERVING AN ANCIENT CRAFT
WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARIn an era when the jewelry business has been overtaken by big companies with cookie-cutter stores in shopping malls and big-budget advertising campaigns on television, Eve Alfillé is a throwback.
This visitor to her downtown Evanston gallery was treated to a viewing of the tools of her trade, which wouldn’t be found anywhere near today’s lines of mass-produced bling.
“All these tools which used to be ubiquitous, mostly made way back by hand from French and Italian companies, you can’t get these anymore.” Alfillé says. “I used to work in archeology so I really appreciate the link. There are some old Egyption murals that show a goldsmith workshop. It’s fascinating.”
Alfillé’s designs reflect a highly creative, deliberative process that produces unique pieces intended to speak to the souls of her customers. She describes the connection to a piece of jewelry as a “spiritual” one.
“I have friends who are painters and they work very rapidly. They ask me, ‘How can you stand it working so slow?’” she says. “It is painstaking, but to me that’s part of the process. As I work I’m changing the design or going where the design takes me. It’s both physical and intellectual.”
Her path to the fine jewelry business wasn’t as direct as perhaps others in the field. She spent time as a stock broker and also taught Advanced Placement for high school. But all of those experiences provide inspiration.
In addition to doing custom work for clients, including engagement and wedding bands, Alfillé releases two new series each year that draw upon specific themes. In the past these have included an “Undercurrent” series with aquatic touches, a “Pompeii” series based on the ancient Roman architectural site, and a collection inspired by the Medieval Era. Over the years she’s created more than 50 of these special series.
“There’s a lot of experimentation because everything I do is pretty much one-of-a-kind and I challenge myself with each series not just with an idea that I want to convey,” says Alfillé. “I use different techniques and different metals, each of which brings a different challenge.”
Alfillé was born in France and spent her childhood there, which included spells hiding from German soldiers during World War II. These experiences, and her experience as an immigrant, also fuel the inspiration for her designs. She spent time with family this summer in a small town back in France and was taken with
the ornate doors on houses that were built centuries ago.
“When you live abroad you learn a different way of looking at things and when you return you’re no longer the same person,” she says. “You see things you wouldn’t have seen otherwise. I took thousands of pictures of these doors. No two of them were alike. We say the French have lots of cheeses but they have even more doors.”
Another feature of Alfillé’s jewelry designs is that they are highly functional. They’re meant to be worn, not to sit in a box. One of her more clever talents is making pieces that can be worn in different ways. A necklace can come apart and its pieces be worn as earrings or a bracelet. She demonstrates with a necklace she’s currently wearing, and it works like an elegant puzzle.
A lot of her custom work involves taking a piece that may have been handed down from a relative and repurposing it based on the new owner’s particular tastes. She offers a new way to wear an old ring or necklace.
One small piece of advice, though, for customers who see something elsewhere, say at Tiffany’s, and want her to reproduce it.
“First of all, somebody else has already designed that,” she says. “I tell them I can make them something else that’s unique to them.”

PUBLISHER’S PROFILE
THE CBD FACTOR
WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEODEver since Chicago Bears legend Jim McMahon hung up his NFL jersey for the final time, he has been plagued with a long list of aches and pains leftover from his grueling football career.
But thanks to CBD, he feels better.
“CBD has helped me sleep better and eat better and just made my whole body feel better,” says the now 60-year-old.
McMahon’s interest in CBD also recently led to a budding friendship with Wilmette internist Dr. Chirag Patel, who met McMahon a few months ago at a charity function.
“CBD provided a different option for him, and yes, it’s an option that is working for him,” explains Dr. Patel, who is the senior managing partner at Hansa Medical Groupe. “And there is a chance it can work for others.”
In fact, from treating chronic pain to dealing with anxiety to handling memory issues, CBD has helped a number of Dr. Patel’s patients.
“The ideal patient would be that person who has tried multiple, conventional medications
that they still haven’t had success with,” he says.
Dr. Patel’s senior demographic of patients is particularly interested in the benefits of CBD.
“They are hoping CBD will help treat their chronic ailments that they are dealing with, from arthritis to fibromyalgia,” he says. “They are tired of taking narcotics and other habit-forming medications to treat these ailments.”
However, Dr. Patel stresses that one must be extremely careful when it comes to adding CBD to their everyday health regimen.
“There are two possible negatives of CBD,” he says. “One is that it just simply won’t work for a patient. More importantly, the other is that CBD could interact with a medication they are already taking. As physicians, we have to use our expertise, learn more about CBD, and inform our patients about appropriate treatment plans.”
Hansa Medical Groupe has offices at 5250 Old Orchard Road, Suite 300, in Skokie, and in Chicago, 847-920-0902, hansamedicalgroupe.com.

Dr. Patel and Jim McMahonWhen John Glennon and Steve Malin, longtime Lake Forest residents and longstanding community friends, reconnected two years ago at a memorial fundraiser, they did not foresee the business partnership that would be forged after “catching up” at Lake Forest’s Malin Baseball Field that brisk fall day in 2017.
Divine intervention? Perhaps. A field of dreams? More like a field of possibilities waiting to happen as Malin asked Glennon, a regarded attorney and banker long specializing in the finance industry and projects involving energy efficiency and environmental awareness components, to “take a look” at a business opportunity he’d recently been presented.
A thorough review detailed how LED lighting improvements, funded by groups of investors providing the upfront capital, would offer small and large businesses alike the chance for green energy improvements at virtually no cost. Through a unique equipment lease-back model combined with utility provider rebates and long-term energy savings, this financially advantageous and environmentally conscious idea was, in Glennon’s mind, a clear winwin for both the funding partners as well as today’s business owner who needs to upgrade to LED lighting but may not be able to afford it. A welcome phone call from Glennon to Malin included two powerful words, “I’m in.” Glennon wanted to partner with Malin on this cutting-edge approach to energy improvement, and Cap4Energy LLC was born.
Malin, a 25 year veteran of the commodities industry and 15 year merchant processing broker, loved the idea of joining forces with Glennon. “John and I have always gotten along great and align when it comes to the importance of relationships,” explains Malin. Indeed, some of the first businesses that utilized their nocost LED lighting improvement were friends and colleagues who they’d known for years.
“The LED funding model works well for countless types of businesses, and we’ve been working with everyone from country clubs, schools, apartment buildings, manufacturing plants, warehouses, and office buildings,” adds Glennon.
The steps to converting to LED with Cap4Energy are simple but far-reaching, making it high-impact for a company’s bottom line, but low-to-no impact as far as business disruption. A nocost on-site walkthrough at the location inspects current systems and assesses energy improvement needs. After completing a brief financial questionnaire, a complementary energy audit is created, specifically tailored to the needs of that organization and prioritizing specific updates that will generate maximum savings. A formal proposal, including terms from the funding partners, utility company incentives, and specifics regarding the equipment, is then presented with a 30-day window to opt-in.
LET THERE BE LED
WORDS BY JOSS LAKE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARAnd the savings from switching to LED are substantial. Cap4Energy has seen lighting costs go down anywhere from 40 to 70 percent. On the flip side, the cost of waiting can top $40,000 a year. “There have been truly enlightening moments when we illustrate the cost of waiting to implement the LED,” says Malin. “It’s often more impactful than detailing the savings.”
“We’ve gotten great testimonials from business owners who couldn’t believe how seamless the process was to install the new lighting,” adds Glennon. “We’re armed with a team of professionals from the audit and funding through the LED implementation and follow-up so that no-cost lighting improvement with Cap4Energy is simply a win on all fronts.”

WORDS BY STEVEN BLOCH, M.D.ExoFlo for Wrinkles and Facial Rejuvenation
As part of my relentless quest to stop or reverse the signs of aging, I am happy to introduce ExoFlo to the mix of treatments we offer to clients.
I don’t think exosomes will replace other treatments such as thermage, microneedling, radio frequency, photofacial, lasers, fillers, or Botox but I do think that when used it may help to speed the healing, slow aging, decrease inflammation, and restore revascularization.
Exosomes are micro-vesicles (30-150nm) that are involved in cell communication. This is a new frontier in regenerative medicine. The ExoFlo exosomes are isolated from donated human stem cells and purified using proprietary processing. The unique benefit of these exosomes is that they contain a wide array of growth factors to stimulate and modulate many processes within the healing cascade. So, in essence, you are getting all of the growth factors from stem cells without the hassle of trying to deliver live stem cells.
ExoFlo consists solely of the proteins that give stem cells and PRP their regenerative powers. Within those cells, tiny vesicles called exosomes are filled with over 1,000 protein growth factors that stimulate new tissue growth. ExoFlo collects those vesicles in a small liquid vial. Just one-fifth of a teaspoon of ExoFlo contains at least 10 billion exosomes.
The result is an unprecedented ability to grow new tissue to correct wrinkles, and decrease facial volume or sagging.
Other advantages are that it stimulates your body to create new tissue. There is little or no downtime since there is no redness or inflammation. Also, there is no foreign material being injected. A disadvantage is that since it is relying on your body to produce the new collagen and elastin it takes longer to see the results but once achieved should last longer.
Patients should realize this technology is new but FDA approved. Results may vary. Procedure protocols and delivery may change over time.

COOKING WITH CAMARADERIE
WORDS BY ALICE YORK / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKOThe members of the Kenilworth Cookbook Club know that adding a dash of fun and a dollop of friendship are sure- re ways to add avor to just about any recipe, making this newly created Club, one that leaves women all over the North Shore craving more.
Founded in 2018 by Allison McEntee—a media and marketing executive with expertise in the food industry—the Club started as a way for moms around town to share a recipe or two while building a bond to last longer than the average dinner party.
“I was new to Kenilworth and certainly appreciated the kindergarten and parent parties, but quickly realized that once the busyness of the school year settled in, the chances to socialize regularly became few and far between,” McEntee says. “I was already meeting amazing women, wanting to get to know them more. I hoped that a consistent reason to gather could make that possible.”
She rst thought of joining a book club, but when she considered her work and family commitments, McEntee knew it would be a rare instance for her to stay awake long enough to read a few pages, let alone an entire book. Determined to come up with a solution, McEntee turned to food. After all, a meal provides comfort and socialization, while sharing recipes means the dreaded meal rut could become a thing of the past. So when her idea for a cookbook club was well-received by a few close friends, McEntee forged ahead.
During the rst meeting held at McEntee’s home, guests arrived with various dishes prepared from the rst cookbook selected, e Barefoot Contessa, by Ina Garten. Each woman introduced herself, talked about the dish they prepared, and shared the challenges and joys experienced while tackling the recipe.
roughout the evening, the women ate, laughed, and bonded. By evening’s end, the next meeting date was set and a tagline was developed— e host selects the cookbook, the guests create the dish, we gather, we feast.
e next morning the word about the evening spent sampling sweet and savory goods was the talk of the town. Women started to inquire about the next meeting and before McEntee knew it, her idea exploded into a group of 93 members, a mix of women from Kenilworth and other North Shore villages.
“I was amazed at how quickly the idea caught on. I was further amazed by how the club attracted women from all walks of life. From the new mom who literally delivered a child a few weeks before a meeting to the almost-empty nester. People are united over the comfort and joy that food can bring,” McEntee says.
“What struck me were the conversations and friendships that emerged. I found lawyers and CEO’s bonding with stay-at-home moms over the joys and challenges that come with child-rearing. Women who wouldn’t ordinarily fall into the same groups, became friends, adding a new depth to relationships around town.”
Needless to say, with 93 members and growing, the Club’s schedule is now booked until June 2021. A Google doc tracks who is hosting, the cookbook being read and which member is making what dish. Each month, the anticipation of the meetings stirs great excitement. Members like Sarah Gallas of Kenilworth explained how she looks forward to a night of feeding her body while nourishing her soul. “ e Club provides me the sense of community that I was looking for when choosing to move to Kenilworth. e group is inclusive and welcoming and it’s a nice way to meet other women in a fun and casual setting. I have formed friendships with some wonderful ladies, as we have the common interest of raising a family in our neighborhood. I always have the best time and feel like I’ve made a new friend. e Club makes me thankful I chose to live where I do,” Gallas notes.
With membership and interest at an all-time high, a club subcommittee was formed to create and publish a community cookbook, Kenilworth Cooks, just in time for the holiday season.
