GOLDEN TIMES PAST AND PRESENT

M

AY IS A month where we celebrate the mothers in our midst, flowers in bloom, and all the things we love about Spring. On a personal note, it also represents a season of beginnings. It was two years ago this month that I started my permanent role as Senior Fashion Editor with JWC Media and then, honored to step into the role of Editor in Chief of Forest & Bluff. I am thrilled to share this milestone serving the communities I love with the 50th anniversary of the incredible Lake Forest-Lake Bluff History Museum. As THE DISH one of our feature stories this month, we take you on a trip to the past and bring you into the present with many interesting stops along the journey. The newest generation of young people is changing the way we think about shopping and trends. Turn to another one of our features this month to learn how Lake Forest native and influencer, model, and blogger Lexi Oberheide—known as Lexi Mars—is the architect of her own success. It’s also that time of the year when we

54

stop and take a moment to appreciate those women who do so much for us—our mothers, grandmothers, and teachers. In our cover feature, The Art of Giving, Lake Forest’s Darci Pinello shares her belief that there’s nothing more special than a personalized gift (and the story of how she came to create her own). Looking for a gift fit for the queen in your life? Check out our Stylist’s Choice gift guide. Go ahead and splurge, she’s worth it! This Mother’s Day, I’ll be heading to the beach with my family to make memories. Be sure to share your Mother’s Day celebrations with us on Instagram— @forestandbluffmag Warmest wishes,

ICASSO AND EINSTEIN walk into a Parisian bar, both believing they are the greatest gift to mankind. The events that ensue from there in “Picasso At the Lapin Agile,” can only be created in the “Wild and Crazy” mind of comedian Steve Martin in a comedy that plays fast and loose with fact, fame, and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects. Lake Forest’s Citadel Theatre is resurrecting this classic (which it staged nearly 20 years ago) in a production running through May 22. Directed by Artistic Director Scott Phelps, “Picasso at The Lapin Agile” is the reminder we all needed to get out and start enjoying our community once again. SUNFLOWERS FOR UKRAINE

RT POP’S “Artists for Ukraine” sunflower community art project features artists from all over Lake County who join in effort to help the people of Ukraine during this difficult time. New sunflower artwork is being donated daily with proceeds donated to a variety of charities for Ukraine relief efforts as part of Artists On The Bluff ’s new “What’s Up With That?” exhibit. “It’s so fulfilling to be part of ART POP and to help build collections for art lovers while also supporting the country of Ukraine!” says Beth McKenna, an Artists on The Bluff member, and co-curator of “What’s Up with That?” Ukrainian pastel artist, Tatiana Jacenkiw kicked off the exhibit March 31 with a demonstration of her talent and a Q&A about Ukraine. “She has a lot of historic knowledge and insight into the terrible situation,” adds Sandie Bacon, Artists On The Bluff President and leader of ART POP. In addition, Tatiana has donated a painting symbolic of her home country for sale at ART POP. Artwork by Susan MacFarlin

ART POP is located at 724 Western Avenue in Lake Bluff. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. For more information, visit artistsonthebluff.org.

HEN CASSIE CARVER, Caroline Eimerman, and Kristin Lambropoulos were students at Lake Forest’s Everett Elementary School, they could never have dreamed that one day the three of them would come together to raise money for this very same school district that their children would someday attend. But as fortunes would have it, on Thursday, May 19 at Exmoor Country Club, this dynamic trio is chairing the Spirit of 67 Foundation’s “In the Spirit of Style”—a ladies’ night out and fashion show to raise money to enhance the educational and cultural experiences for Lake Forest School District 67 students. “I love supporting the schools that I went to that my children now do,” says Lambropoulos, who founded Total Spectrum, an ABA Therapy company for children on the autism spectrum with her brothers, Brian and Andrew Lacy. “I feel it’s important to invest in our schools to make them a place that alumni want to return to with their families.” The idea of a fashion show came from a brainstorming session the three co-chairs had to create a fun evening event. “Fashion shows don’t just happen,” says Carver, who is the managing member of Ferrari Lake Forest, her family’s dealership. “You need the right people to produce them.” The chairs secured fan favorite Zzazz Productions, well-known in the area for its beautifully curated shows, to direct the fashion show that will feature looks from Lillie Alexander Ltd., Ewamay, and Neiman Marcus to name just a few. Guests will be treated to heavy appetiz-

ers, a cash bar, raffle, and auction items. “It’s wonderful to know that the money we raise will make our incredible schools even better,” says Eimerman, owner of Belvedere Events & Catering. Eimerman also designs invitations, event signage, and personalized party products for her online event décor business, Posh Papetiere. Guests will see her signature flair throughout the event. “In the Spirt of Style” is one of two major fundraising events that will be hosted this year by The Spirit of 67. Its mission—to raise funds and acquire resources to provide enriching educational and cultural experiences for the students, parents, faculty, and staff of Lake Forest School District 67 that might not otherwise be provided—has made it possible for nearly $6 million (more than 700 individual grants) in grant awards to be provided over the last 36 years. Grants are awarded every April. While money raised at In the Spirit of Style is for schools in District 67, all ladies are welcome at this event. Tickets are available at spiritof67foundation.org. HAT DETERMINES the measure of a man? Those who knew Norman Olsen describe him as a gentleman with a kind and generous soul and a loving spirit. He treated everyone equally and with respect, possessing his own unique zest for life and infectious optimism. “He never met a stranger,” says daughter Freya Olsen. “He was a man of action whose daily goal was to help change the lives of others for the better.” Norman Oscar Olsen, devoted father, lifelong sailor and ambassador of the sport— with more than 100,000 miles of ocean racing experience—passed away peacefully on February 15 in Belleair, Florida at the age of 91. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, on March 25, 1930, to Oscar E. and Viola (nee Pace) Olsen, Norman grew up in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania and Annapolis, Maryland. During his life, he lived in a number of other

areas of the country, including Oyster Bay, New York, Chicago, Florida, Northern Michigan, and Lake Forest from 1998 to 2015. It was during his 17 years in Lake Forest that Olsen made his mark on the community and particularly on the Junior Sailing Program at Lake Forest Parks & Recreation (LFPR). The fledgling program was run down with little participation, so Olsen jumped right in, making a pitch to LFPR to revitalize the program. In five months, Olsen took action, reaching out to members of the community to secure donations of sailboats and all the gear necessary to run successful “learn to sail” classes. The program flourished. “Norman was a very supportive mentor to me,” says Joe Harris, Director of Lake Forest Sailing from 2005 to 2009. “He always had a bigger vision, to change the culture of the program to be inclusive and have a team spirit. It’s a testament to his legacy.” “Norman had a lifelong passion for getting people involved in sailing at a young age, no matter their background,” says Hunter Ratliff, an accomplished sailboat racer and instructor who served as Director of Lake For-

est Sailing for nearly 10 years. “He established scholarships to encourage those who could not afford to participate get involved and stay in the sport.” By 2002, U.S. Sailing Association awarded Lake Forest Sailing the “Outstanding Year-Round Sailing Program” and “Outstanding Illinois Park District Program of the Year.” A perpetual trophy in his name, the “Norman Olsen Sailor of the Year,” is awarded to sailors demonstrating sportsmanship, dedication, and enthusiasm for the sport of sailing. Ensuring the success of Lake Forest’s sailing program was about much more than sailing for Olsen. He was a tireless advocate for the character development of young people. In a 2010 article in Forest & Bluff, Olsen said, “The activity of sailing teaches independent thinking, development of team spirit and cooperation, promotion of healthy competitive attitudes, and the ability to make quick decisions in the face of challenging conditions. It is through the adoption of these positive cultural values that sailing helps young Americans to become individual thinkers capable of becoming responsible, resourceful, and solid citizens who can and will contribute positively to their future and the future of the United States of America.” Olsen’s dedication to youth stemmed from his role as father to his own seven children. “Anyone who knew my dad knew that his greatest source of pride and joy was his kids, and he loved nothing more than being a father,” says Freya Olsen. “He was a constant source of love, support, and encouragement.” Even in the face of devastating loss, OlNorman Olsen sen chose to go on. In 1957, he experienced the profound loss of his 4-year-old son (with then wife, Joan), Norman Jr. “Bubby,” in a tragic accident. Amidst a level of grief beyond comprehension, Ol-

sen pushed onward, working to adopt the mindset of “gratitude over grief ” that he was called upon to use over the course of his life. In 1987, he lost his second wife of 13 years and “the love of his life” Dottie, mother to their daughters Kirstin and Freya, to breast cancer. And, in 1996, he was devastated by the loss of his second oldest daughter, Andrea “Andy” Olsen, to melanoma at the age of 38. Prior to his success at Lake Forest Sailing, Olsen founded and helped to fund the Clearwater Community Sailing Center in Florida, producing three Silver Medal winners in the Summer Olympics of 1992 and 2008, and the Paralympics in 2016. Over the course of his career, Olsen worked for The Skipper magazine early on, and Center Press in Chicago years later. In the interim, he spent 15 years as a vice president of marketing and sales in product development and promotion. Then, as a mergers and acquisitions specialist on Wall Street, Olsen found his calling and laid the foundation for establishing his own consulting firm, Management Meeting Consultants, Inc. in 1976, serving as president until his passing. Last year, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of publishing a book, Ronny Come Home! about his childhood dog and best friend. Olsen is survived by his loving children and biggest fans, Karin Olsen Campia (Ken), Roderick Pace Olsen (Debbie), Michelle “Mimi” Olsen Baden, Kirstin Rode Olsen, Freya Alexandra Olsen, and his four cherished grandchildren Victoria Madison Campia, Sigourney Tegan Campia, Charlotte Emily Baden, and Bryson Oscar Baden. Norman Olsen lived a full life indeed— one devoted to family, friends, youth, community, and his unwavering love for the sport of sailing. He will be missed.

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

LONG AND WINDING ROAD Signs mark new era for Lillian Dell’s Drive in Lake Bluff. words by Adrienne Fawcett

T

HERE’S A 16-FOOT-WIDE path in a Lake Bluff ravine that’s been called Lillian Dell’s Drive for a long time. But just who was Lillian? This important detail was forgotten until recently, when Lake Bluff History Museum pieced the story together. Today Lillian Dell’s Drive has colorful new signs courtesy of the Village of Lake Bluff. The ravine also has a rocky history. It played a pivotal role in the lives of Native Americans, pioneers, summer guests and year-round villagers, and it even wound up on the Illinois Supreme Court docket. The ravine also has been a surreptitious toboggan run for generations. Long ago, Native Americans traveled to the ravine to harvest flint, according to oral history preserved by the Museum. In 1836, the area’s first European settlers, immigrants John and Catherine Cloes, laid claim to 100 acres of land, including the ravine. Methodist businessman Solomon Thatcher was charmed by ravines when he founded the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association in 1875. The summer resort transformed the ravine into a drive for horse-drawn carriages. By night, summering couples strolled the secluded path to the lake, earning the drive the moniker, “Lover’s Lane.” But who was Lillian? Lillian Dell Friestedt’s family summered in Lake Bluff in the late 19th century. She and twin brother George were born in 1885 to Luther Peter and Dorothea Heuer Friestedt. Sadly, Lillian died in 1887, according to Lynn Friestedt Steffen, a longtime Lake Bluff resident whose great-grandparents were Luther and Dora. In 1901, Luther purchased land straddling the ravine. In 1909 he subdivided it and donated the ravine path in memory of his daughter Lillian Dell “as a public driveway to be kept in repair by the Village of Lake Bluff and to be used and maintained for a pleasure driveway only.” Drama around Lillian Dell’s Drive started in 1916, when the Village became embroiled in a lawsuit with new owner John Crosby, who built a fence across the ravine and posted signs claiming ownership. Another lawsuit, in 1950, placed Lillian Dell’s Drive before the Illinois Supreme Court when homeowners challenged the Village’s maintenance and questioned whether the drive should allow

ABOVE: Lillian Dell’s Drive 2022 RIGHT: Lillan Dell’s Drive circa 1908

automobiles. The court sided with the Village, saying no to cars. What would Dora and Luther have thought of the tug of war over their daughter’s memorial drive? With their deaths in 1913 and 1917, respectively, the family’s connection to Lake Bluff was lost, but not forever. In the 1950s, the couple’s grandson Frederick Friestedt moved to Lake Forest with his wife, Blanche, a real estate broker. No one mentioned that an earlier generation had summered in Lake Bluff, according to Lynn Steffen, their daughter. But one day in 1970, Blanche’s co-worker sold a house in the “Friestedt plat.” Blanche investigated and learned of the family’s long-ago ties to Lake Bluff. Lynn raised her children, Mark and Erik Steffen, in the Village, and she now lives in Green Oaks with sister, Christine; brother, Bradford, lives in Lake Bluff. They are thrilled with the new signs at Lillian Dell’s Drive, a path named for their ancestor, a little girl whose connection to Lake Bluff was forgotten for decades. And is now remembered.

BETWEEN THE BLUFFS

PORTAL TO HELL: HOUSE V. HOMEOWNER words by Tom Batchell illustration by T-Ann Pierce

I

F YOU LIKE TO BE reminded of your spouse’s each and every shortcoming, if you enjoy overwhelming served with a side of worry, exhaustion, and self-loathing, then listing your house and moving might be for you. We sold our home this spring. We’ve moved a lot. I have blessed and released enough homes to know that a house is like a petulant child. As soon as it realizes you are leaving, it throws a tantrum. Many years ago, our well went dry the day before inspection. Once, a basement flooded. This time, the day before inspection, a Portal To Hell appeared in our yard. I’m no shrinking violet. I am a strong contender in the House v. Homeowner arena. We have had groundhogs living between the walls of our bedroom. We have survived turf wars against bands of brazen and resourceful raccoons. We had a colony of displaced rats move into our cellar during a garbage strike when our city’s Victorian sewer system was being replaced. The rats were drunk with power that summer, climbing walls, terrorizing people, and taunting dogs. We’ve had nesting seagulls so vicious they made grown men cry. We’ve had frogs in the basement. We watched rainwater cascade elegantly down our two-hundred-fifty-year-old staircase like a majestic waterfall. We’ve sorted out ice damming, water on wood floors, mold, and sewage in the basement (twice). But we have never experienced a Portal To Hell. In a crisis, the first thing I like to do is misdirect my anger, fear, and panic onto my poor, helpless family. Then I cry. Then I binge sugar. Sugar gets me all hopped up and hyper-focused; I adore a false feeling of control. The real benefit of the sugar high comes hours later when my blood sugar crashes. Shaking and feeling weak

while also being consumed with self-loathing, helps to distract me from the pain of emergency repair costs. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you we had no idea who to call for help with the Portal To Hell. A plumber? A priest? In the end, heroes appeared in a snowstorm like apparitions. Equipped with an uber-specialized, Ghost Busters- looking truck, ice picks, and a McDonald’s cup, they closed the Portal To Hell. I invited them to Thanksgiving. They are like sons to me now. When we moved to The Bubble, we were told people often end up buying three houses in this community: a starter home, a family home, and an empty nester home. We are now on our third home here. The thing about living between the bluffs is that once you’ve lived here, where do you move? We are supremely spoiled by the lake, our beaches, great schools, tight-knit neighborhoods, shopping, and restaurants. If an invasive beetle hitches a ride in a banana crate and decimates trees, our towns are prepared to plant hardy new trees to replace the old. If a storm swallows up part of the beach, our towns rally. Where else do you find people courteous enough to pick up after their dogs, yet preposterous enough to scatter the bags along the sidewalk? We are still not in our forever home. I was cursed with both a gypsy soul and a penchant for fixer-uppers so I’ve probably got a few more moves in me. My forever home will likely be a plastic takeaway container on a shelf of the offspring unlucky enough to draw the short straw. In the meantime, we will live happily ever after here in The Bubble. There is no place I’d rather be than between the bluffs when spring gives way to summer. T-Ann Pierce is a regular F&B contributor and confidence coach. We would love hearing from you. FAMILY LAW

PET CUSTODY Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer discusses Illinois law as it applies to pet custody in divorce. words by Michone J. Riewer and Megan E. Falsafi photography by James Gustin of Fig Media styling by Theresa DeMaria hair & makeup by Leanna Ernest

I

N ILLINOIS, courts previously viewed animals as property. Pet custody did not appear in divorce case law until 2015. In that case, the husband sought visitation with the parties’ two dogs, who had been in the wife’s possession during separation. The court viewed this as a property issue and looked to the Animal Control Act to define “owner.” Using the Act’s definition of owner, the court awarded custody to the wife without any visitation to the husband. The courts believed that awarding pet visitation served as an invitation for endless post-divorce litigation. Under this case law, if two parties separated, the party who obtained possession and control of the pet prior to the divorce was awarded pet custody. Illinois law has since adapted to the way families view and treat their pets. One study found that more than 95 percent of pet owners described their dog as a family member. Owners form strong emotional bonds with their pets, buying presents, grooming products, and even hosting pet parties. In 2018, the Illinois legislature enacted laws that address companion animals. The term “companion animal” includes essentially any pet not considered a service animal. The new statute, effective January 1, 2018, allows parties to enter into an agreement that addresses the ownership, responsibility, and visitation of a companion animal. Pursuant to the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act, the ownership of and responsibility for companion animals found to be marital assets will be allocated to one party or to the parties jointly. The animal will be considered a marital asset if it was acquired during the marriage and was not an inheritance or gift to one spouse. The statute does not address what happens if the animal was a gift to the children. When devising a pet schedule, the parties must each consider the best way to transport the pet between homes, who will pay for the pets’ expenses (including food and veterinary care), who will be responsible for grooming, and what items are needed in each home to keep the pet happy and healthy. If the parties cannot agree, then either party may ask the court for the temporary allocation of, sole or joint possession of, and responsibility for, a companion animal jointly owned by the parties. When awarding possession, responsibility, and visitation, the court will consider the pet’s well-being. Some of the factors considered include if there are children, where the children will be living, whether

Michone J. Riewer

one spouse was more instrumental in purchasing the pet, and who was most responsible for the pet’s care during the marriage, including daily feedings, walks, and veterinary appointments. Strategic Divorce can help navigate pet custody and every other aspect of divorce. If you have questions about how a pet may be treated in your divorce, or other questions related to divorce, contact Strategic Divorce for a consultation. Michone J. WEALTH MANAGEMENT

BOUTIQUE APPROACH

When it comes to wealth management, Steven Esposito of Morgan Stanley brings more than three decades of experience and a track record for curating custom portfolios for his clients. words by Sherry Thomas

I

F STEVEN ESPOSITO has learned anything in his more than 37 years of managing high net worth portfolios, it’s to never panic. Esposito started in the wealth management business in 1983 and has experienced five market crashes and now, a pandemic. “It’s never boring,” he says. The one piece of advice he shares with his clients is that wealth management is not about finding the next hot stock. Rather, it’s about risk management. “An investor can never eliminate risk; they can only mitigate it,” explains Esposito, Executive Director, Senior Portfolio Management Director, and Wealth Advisor for Morgan Stanley. “If your family wealth is properly allocated, market turbulence is an opportunity and not a crisis.” The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley brings a boutique approach to wealth management—one that assists long-time customers with everything from estate planning strategies and portfolio management to retirement planning, trusts, and philanthropy. Esposito knows from experience that portfolios continually evolve as the years progress. “I remember a long time ago, a very wealthy client said to me: ‘I’m already rich; don’t make me poor’,” he says. “I never forgot that comment and it’s a cornerstone of what we do at the Lake Forest Group. We have had two severe stock market crashes in the last 11 years, and if investors haven’t learned how to properly balance their assets in that time, they never will.” Esposito and his team pride themselves on a very personal, boutique approach. “We don’t do cookie cutter portfolios, or create portfolios via a software program,” he says. “Every portfolio is managed independently and uniquely, along with some good old fashioned wealth management—all while benefiting from the global financial resources of Morgan Stanley. It’s the best of both worlds.” Esposito’s advice has been sought out by major media organizations, including WGN TV and radio; WBBM’s “Noon Business Hour”; WIND radio; Fox News; ABC-7 News; CBS News; NBC News; the Chicago Tribune; Chicago Sun-Times; and Crain’s Chicago Business. The Lake Forest Group has approximately 175 households under their management as of April 15, 2021, the vast majority who have worked with Esposito for 12 years or more—including some who’ve

been with him for more than 30 years. It’s no wonder then that he has made Forbes magazine’s “Best in State” wealth manager’s award every year he entered. “It’s a very personal operation here in downtown Lake Forest. We emphasize personal attention, number one. I’m like the family CFO in addition to the asset management, we discuss the trusts, wills, etcetera. You have to review everything,” says Esposito. “Morgan Stanley is one of the premier global managers on the planet right now and the resources of this firm are incredible.” Navigating financial markets has become more complex than ever and last year’s pandemic threw in a wild card that no one could have seen coming. “That’s when you need a seasoned veteran on your side. I’ve learned from nearly four decades of experience—not from a textbook or TV— when to deploy capital. Deploying capital at the scariest moments and liquidating during market euphoria is the most difficult thing to get people to do,” he explains. “My responsibility as a wealth manager is to protect your family’s wealth first. We do our best to calculate our client’s risk tolerance—along with their needs, desires, and investment goals for their families and future generations.” Esposito’s minimum account size is $1.5 million. The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley is located at 207 E. Westminster Avenue, Suite 300, in Lake Forest. For more information, call 847-604- 7321 or email steven.esposito@morganstanley.com. RANSPORT MOM to the Amalfi Coast this Mother’s Day with an Italicus Spritz. It stars Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto—a fresh, lightly floral, and delicately bitter Italian liqueur made from Bergamot, a citrus fruit native to southern Italy. This sparkling cocktail is irresistibly bright, with a touch of gin echoing the Bergamot fruit’s herbal qualities, and Meyer lemon juice adding a soft sweetness and complexity not present in traditional lemons. If Meyer lemons are not readily available, a 50/50 mix of traditional lemon juice and tangerine juice may be substituted. Serves 1 INGREDIENTS • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed Meyer lemon juice (see above for substitution option) • 1/2 ounce gin • 1 1/2 ounces Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto • 3 ounces prosecco or sparkling wine • Meyer lemon peel spiral, for garnish INSTRUCTIONS • Add Meyer lemon juice, gin, and Italicus to a cocktail shaker. • Fill shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. • Double strain into a well-chilled coupe glass and top with prosecco. • Garnish with a Meyer lemon peel spiral. Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto is available at Binny’s Beverage Depot. Vintage etched coupe glasses, marble tray, and hand-embroidered cocktail napkins available at fletcherandfork.com.

F YOU ARE A thoughtful seafood lover, you know it’s better to eat fish that are caught or farmed in ways that support species sustainability and the health of the oceans they swim in. This delicious dish supports you in that. The recipe works well with any number of flaky white fish. But among them, black cod (sablefish) is considered one of the most sustainable. Black cod’s creamy white flesh is loaded with Omega-3s earning it the name “butterfish” for its silky richness. Simply sauteed and paired with a flavorful sauce of just three ingredients: fresh dill, capers, and coconut milk, this light and lovely preparation is Spring at it finest. We like to serve it with steamed snow peas which, with their bright green hue and delicate texture, go very well with the coconut milk sauce.

1 cup finely minced fresh dill, all stems removed 2 Tbsp capers, drained 13.5 to 14 oz coconut milk 2 tsp coconut oil 3 small fillets black cod (sable fish) Garnish with dill sprigs and a sprinkling of capers

Method Remove all stems from dill. Mince dill leaves. Combine dill and capers with coconut milk in a blender or use immersion blender to puree mixture. Pour liquid into sauté pan. Simmer over medium heat until bubbling; reduce heat to low and simmer until reduced by two thirds to a creamy sauce. Remove from heat. In a clean sauté pan, heat coconut oil. Gently sauté cod fillets until firm, turning once. Plate fish with sauce, snow peas, and a sprinkling of dill sprigs and capers.

THE ART OF GIVING

Lake Forest’s Darci Pinello believes there’s nothing more special than a personalized gift, so she’s taking matters into her own crafty hands and creates her own. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Robin Subar

D

ARCI PINELLO is no stranger to hard work. When she was 16 years old, after one too many fender benders with her car, her Dad put her to work at the family’s Chicago restaurant—Tufano’s. “I think he was trying to teach me a lesson by making me a get a job,” Pinello says with a laugh. “Little did he know how much I would love working at the restaurant.” Pinello waited tables at Tufano’s—a Chicago institution since the 1930s that was started by Pinello’s paternal grandmother—all through high school and college. “After I graduated from Depaul [University], I became the manager at the restaurant with my twin sister. I loved it, she did not,” she says. “My sister went on to law school, but I started taking on more and more things for Tufano’s like ordering, catering, and party planning. I was the first one to really type up our order forms—until then, everything had just been written by hand. I loved it and thrived on being busy.” One night in 2010, Pinello happened to be working the dinner shift and the restaurant was buzzing with customers grabbing a bite before the Blackhawks first playoff game for the Stanley Cup. Her future husband happened to be among them. “Phil told me that he had an extra ticket to the game

“It was OK at first, being at home with the girls and doing things we didn’t have time for before when I was working.”

and asked if I wanted to go with him,” she recalls. “I told him that I could get my own ticket and didn’t need his.” But thankfully, he wasn’t deterred by her brush off, returning the next week and asking for her number. “I gave it to him,” she says with a smile. “It all worked out.” The Pinellos have been married for seven years. Even though the newlyweds bought a home in Lake Forest, Pinello continued to make the daily trip to Tufano’s until she had her first daughter Sophia. “I had to cut back my hours,” she says. “I couldn’t work the way I did before, so I went to just managing. My Dad is so good and allowed me the freedom to do that.” Pinello settled into a nice routine with her first daughter and then her second, Francesca, working at the restaurant two days a week. All was well until the pandemic hit. “Everything just shut down,” Pinello remembers. “It was OK at first, being at home with the girls and doing things we didn’t have time for before when I was working.” But when the opportunity to become a room mom

in Sophia’s class presented itself, Pinello jumped at it. “I was ready to be busy again and the class Christmas party was the first real thing I got to help with,” she says. “I made a gift for each child and personalized bags with their names on them.” By Valentine’s Day, Pinello’s skills with vinyl transfers were refined to the point that each child received multiple items at the class party with their names on them and other parents were starting to take notice. “They asked me where I bought them and I said I made them,” she says. “Then the teacher asked if I might be able to help her with a project and it ended up being my first big order. I made her 24 personalized buckets.” Soon after this bucket project, Tufano’s was able to reopen for indoor dining and Pinello was asked to plan a large corporate party for a long-time customer. “She really wanted to celebrate that she was able to gather people again and she asked if we could give guests a party favor with Tufano’s name on it to remember the evening,” Pinello says. “I told her that I wouldn’t only help her plan the party from start to finish, but I could also make the favor. I’d been making shirts and quarter zips with our logo on it for our restaurant team, so making a Tufano’s favor was no problem.” It was then that Pinello realized she could turn this creative outlet into a business and Tutti Tufano was born. “Tutti means ‘all things or everything’ in Italian, so

“I’m not a person who says she can do it all... but whatever I do, I will give it my all.”

Tutti Tufano means ‘all things Tufano, and then some’,” Pinello says. “I wanted to incorporate Tufano’s because my idea was that this could be a sister company to the restaurant. Tufano’s is where my true heart and soul are.” Word spread quickly the Tutti Tufano was open for business. A perfectionist, Pinello does all of the personalization herself. “It’s so nice to work with clients to help them come up with an idea for a party favor or customize something they bring to me,” she says. “One of the most fun projects was personalizing tank tops for my babysitter’s tennis team. I understand the need for a quick turnaround. I think that’s why people like working with me.” As life continues to return to a more post-pandemic normal, Pinello juggles her home life with the restaurant and a steadily growing Tutti Tufano—because she truly believes that there’s nothing more special than receiving a gift with your name on it. “I’m not a person who says she can do it all,” Pinello says. “But whatever I do, I will give it my all.” To learn more about Tutti Tufano or to place an order, visit Pinello’s Instagram page @tuttitufano.

Positive Influencer

Social media star and Lake Forest native Lexi Mars makes her dreams a reality. words by Kelli Doremus

I

NFLUENCER, model, and blogger, Lexi Oberheide—known as Lexi Mars—is the architect of her own success. Known for her inspirational sense of fashion and relatable lifestyle content, Mars has gained fame for her @leximars Instagram account. Growing up in Lake Forest, however, she might have seemed destined for a more traditional path. Mars attended Lake Forest High School and excelled as a member of the dance team before going on to attend Texas Christian University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. “I had two job offers in the advertising industry, and my parents were really hoping for me to take one of them—like most parents in Lake Forest, they wanted me to go down the ‘right path,’” she says, explaining that her family really wanted her to go the corporate route. “But I couldn’t get my heart to be excited about it, and just kept asking myself: ‘Do I want to spend the rest of my life working to build someone else’s dreams, or do I want to build my own?’” Mars chose the latter. Despite facing disapproval from her family, she turned down both jobs, found a roommate on Craigslist, and moved to L.A to pursue acting and modeling. “I had 10 different jobs keeping me afloat, not glamorous at all—from cleaning bathrooms at a dance studio for half minimum wage, to dog walking, to substitute teaching at a charter school,” she says. Then one day, Mars’ life took an interesting turn when a manager for standup comedians overheard her sharing a story about her family and how they felt about her choices with moving to LA. “They thought it was hilarious and before I knew it, I was thrown into the comedy world,” she says. She spent every day writing and was performing almost every night, and that got her to the point where she was in the

main room at The Comedy Store—a legendary comedy club in L.A. But it was her Lake Forest roots that helped her land that role. “My family was the reason I got into standup comedy—by telling ridiculous stories about them,” Mars laughs. “They’re very Italian and outspoken with endless amounts to say and telling stories about them is what got me on those stages.” Standup quickly became Mars’ outlet of choice. “Comedy made me feel like I could be my authentic self and be loved for it,” she shares. “It gave me the confidence to say what’s on my mind, speak from my heart, and just do me.” And that clearly shines through in the inspiring content she creates today. After pursuing comedy for a year and half, Mars got burnt out and decided to take a break, switching gears to Instagram—just having fun, shooting with her friends during the day, and putting all her efforts into that. She started with travel-focused content before transitioning into fashion. “I started getting emails from fashion brands offering me money to market their clothes. Some of these clothing brands were more sexualized and I knew lots of people who were making good money promoting those clothes,” Mars says, explaining that not only did she not want that to be her brand, but that her very Catholic, Italian grandma followed her on Instagram and (definitely) would not approve. “I really wanted to give this a shot and earn money with it, and hopefully one day make it a full-time career. So, I had to be creative about how to incorporate those clothes, because I couldn’t pass up that opportunity. That’s when I started getting into all the various ways different pieces could be styled and worn. I started getting millions of views on my videos,

and my Instagram started taking off.” Through it all, Mars says the hardest part was how alienated she felt at times from her family and friends in Lake Forest. However, she credits her best friend Jami Alix (who she met at the famous M Salon in the North Shore!) for not letting her quit in the beginning when she felt the pressure to. Mars currently lives in Los Angeles with her high school sweetheart, Alex Plonsker but during the pandemic lockdowns, she spent most of the time home in Lake Forest with her family. “It was great to come back and spend so much time in the place that shaped me. I got to reconnect with my roots and reconnect with some of my best friends from high school,” she adds. “It was a time period that I didn’t even know I needed but loved every second of it.” Today, Mars’ family keeps her grounded, and they each have their own unique, funny ways to be in involved. Between paying her little brother, Frankie, $10 per outfit to take her photos on family vacations, to her grandma emailing her TikTok videos to make sure she’s keeping up with the trends, their support is endless. In addition to creating Instagram content, TikTok videos, and blog posts about her lifestyle and favorite fashion and beauty brands, Mars also records entertaining vlogs on her YouTube channel. (We recommend checking out “MY FAMILY RATES MY PRETTY LITTLE THING OUTFITS,” where her aunts and grandma roast her outfits.) “Don’t worry, it only de-

stroyed my self-confidence a little,” she quips. Mars has obtained an audience of over 250,000 people/followers on social media. She’s been featured in numerous national campaigns and has worked with top fashion and beauty brands, including Revolve, Loreal, Salvatore Ferragamo, Mark Fisher, Clean and Clear, Frame Denim, Skims, Steve Madden, Waldorf Astoria, and The Ritz Carlton. Between coming up with the creative concepts, location scouting and editing, to being your own stylist and manager, this lifestyle doesn’t come without hard work. “As long as I’m continuously staying inspired, then I love it—but I can definitely fall into that hamster wheel of overworking myself,” Mars says. “I just want to exude happiness and positivity. I want people to feel like they can relate to me, that they can reach out to me, that I can be there for them and hopefully inspire them to chase their dreams too.” That’s why she’s creating an online course that will be a step-by-step, in-depth guide on how to grow your social media following and work with fashion and beauty brands (which can be found at leximars.com). She’s hoping to have that out sometime this year to give other young women the confidence and guidance they need to carve their own path—to help them see that they, too, have the potential to follow their dreams. GOLDEN TIMES—

PAST AND PRESENT

The History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff plans to tell stories—oodles of them, and in a variety of compelling ways—through partnerships with Lake Forest College, Ragdale Foundation, and Craig Bergmann Landscape Design during its 50th anniversary celebration. words by Bill McLean photography by Robin Subar hair & makeup by Cathleen Healy

T

HE HISTORY CENTER is turning 50 and several golden opportunities to share local history are underway. Landscape designers working in Lake Forest in the 1920s were more than artists plying their creativity atop soil and lawns. “They were the rock stars of their day,” History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff President Katie Hale claims, alluding to the North Shore city’s lush gardens of national historic significance, including those that adorned the various McCormick family estates, as well as the Ryerson, Armour, and Schweppe family estates. Too few people know that the oldest African American church in Lake County—the First Baptist Church—stands in Lake Forest. It first welcomed parishioners in 1902. Not enough people are aware that Lake Forest benefited economically and socially from the small, strong community of African American residents, who were a consistent part of the community beginning in the late 1800s. The History Center, also known simply as the Museum of a city (Lake Forest) and a village (Lake Bluff ), wants to change that. They have worked hard to build strong partnerships that help bring history outside the doors of the museum and into the community. Currently the team is working with Craig Bergmann Landscape Design and local garden clubs to create a new outdoor exhibit (five gardens, ringing the Center) that will tell the history of garden design in Lake Forest. That project will likely break ground in 2024. And this summer, the mu-

seum will collaborate with Ragdale Foundation and the First Baptist Church to tell many stories of African Americans in Lake Forest, through performances at Ragdale, lectures at the museum, and a self-guided walking tour. The kickoff event will be at the Chicago History Museum on June 25th. “Lake Forest’s history has such a rich diversity, filled with stories that need to be shared,” says Summerfield, a Highland Park resident who, since the start of her tenure as the Center’s ED in October 2018, has broadened the focus of the programs, exhibits, and education to include a more diverse narrative, showcasing how local stories are emblematic of national themes. “How many people in our community realize Lake Forest’s schools have been integrated since the 1870s? “Our garden initiative,” she continues, “will tell stories, too, including the evolution of the designed landscape, from historical Native cultivation of the land with plants as wayfinding and boundary markers, through modernist gardens that created a balance between natural and cultivated grounds.” Each garden segment will consist of accessible walking paths, sculptures, ironwork, interpretive signage, and benches. But the long seats planted among the artistry of landscape design won’t just serve as resting spots; they’ll also allow frequenters to look around, to marvel, to appreciate history. The History Center expects the gardens to be a permanent and perennial draw for local and regional visitors. Its full roster of summer and fall programs, walking tours, and exhibitions will be a reintroduction for the public to the museum, after a long closure through the pandemic. But the staff and board kept the momentum going, through planning FO REST & BLUFF 75

for a 50th anniversary celebration. More than a dozen Lake Forest College students, under the steady, imaginative guidance of History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Executive Director Carol Summerfield and Deputy Director Laurie Stein, have worked diligently on a History Center exhibit, 50 in Focus, that looks back on 50 years of history of the two communities. The History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff can’t wait to share these stories with Lake Foresters and Lake Bluffians and anyone, for that matter, with a shred of curiosity, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary with a kickoff event at the museum on June 17th. “Local history is a part of our culture, and our goal is to inspire people—to help develop their sense of self and place,” says Hale, who was asked to join the board of the History Center 16 years ago and created the Center’s annual signature event, Local Legends (now in its 12th year). “You can’t live in these communities and not be reminded of the past—the stories, architecture, gardens, city planning, and the people who shaped, and continue to shape our towns. “Every aspect of our local culture,” the Lake Bluff resident adds, “is inspiration for interesting programs and exhibits.” Established in 1972 as the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society, the History Center offers a free museum and the 25,000+ items in the archive as a resource, helping to connect people to the community’s history and to each other. Annually, the museum offers 40 programs, four new exhibits and several educational initiatives to provide audiences with a deeper understanding of how our communities develop, change, and grow. The innovative museum boasts interactive exhibits—to capture the minds and imaginations of visitors of all ages— a storytelling booth, and a permanent exhibit gallery that can

be turned into a 100-seat theater space for events. The Center’s rotating exhibit space, The Katherine Bell Hale Gallery, was named in 2019 for the former History Center Programming Committee member and current President. “The History Center is unique because we actively share, collect, and preserve,” says Hale, an Indiana native who majored in Art History at Ripon College in Wisconsin and is a Florence-trained artist. “We are easily available to the public. The interactive permanent exhibit boards and on-line collections feature a constantly growing library of diverse stories and information. The exhibit boards are especially fun to play with—History at your fingertips!” Summerfield grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and majored in Creative Writing at Northwestern University. Probably nobody knows more about Chicago History than she does. One of her jobs as Managing Editor of the Newberry Library, after all, was that of editing the entire Encyclopedia of Chicago History. “Some call Carol our ‘dreamer,’” Hale, months before the 50th anniversary kickoff, says. “She’s a dynamic director. With her, our creative staff, and our focused board and volunteers, we’re ready to roar in 2022 with a variety of crowd-pleasing events. “The organization has seen so much growth, especially in the last 10 years, and the changes have been exciting,” adds Hale. “Back in 2006, we put together one or two shows. Now we’re planning out five years just to fit everything in!” The Historical Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff is located at 509 East Deerpath Road in Lake Forest. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 847-234-5253 or visit lflbhistory.org.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE BESPOKE FACELIFT words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

F

inally a laser without significant downtime. Cool Peel treats facial photo-aged skin, reduces fine lines, sun damage, and pore size while improving skin texture with no real downtime. CO2 laser treatments just became a lot cooler. The Cool Peel leverages the exclusive H-Pulse a high-peakpower short pulse that delivers a fully-ablative treatment without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Without thermal damage, downtime is drastically minimized. At the same time, the system delivers impressive superficial, skin resurfacing results. Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration needed to tailor and optimize treatments. The Cool Peel allows the versatility of four pulse modes depending on where and what you want to treat. The procedure is quick and virtually pain-free. Topical numbing agents are usually not needed, so large areas of the body can quickly and effectively be treated at one time. Post-op there is minimal if any discomfort. The skin feels a little dry and begins peeling or flaking in days leaving you with smooth, radiant skin.

Treasures Are My Specialty... Historic houses are one of my professional specialties and personal passions. As a former journalist, I love researching and then telling the unique story of each historic home in print and narrated videos.

If I can help you in your search for a historic treasure, like the Gatehouse at Havenwood below...or if you would like my help in attracting qualified buyer-stewards for the sale of your own history-rich home... I would be honored to hear from you. - Julie

Over the years Howard Van Doren Shaw experts have described his Gatehouse at Havenwood as an architectural treasure, so worthy of its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Perhaps no modern-day architect knows the home better or describes it better than architect Michael Breseman, well known for his extensive restoration work on Shaw’s famed House of Four Winds in Lake Forest. “I fell in love with the Gatehouse at Havenwood the very first time I walked thru its signature arched dog trot - a portal to the early 1900s which serves as a greeting from one of the great architects of the era, Howard Van Doren Shaw. The home is truly a unique ”hidden” gem in Lake Forest, and the last remaining building from the Ryerson estate. While documenting, reviewing its history, and creating design opportunities, I have come to discover the versatility of the structure and the abundant possibilities just waiting to be tailored to a specific family’s needs.” - Michael Breseman MEB Architects, Ltd., Lake Forest

To tour the Gatehouse at Havenwood, privately listed at $1,350,000, please contact Julie Morse. A narrated history-specific video on the home is also available upon request.

OMS—WHAT WOULD WE DO without them? While the mothers in our lives might come in many forms (aunts, grandmothers, and friends), they all go above and beyond to make sure we feel loved. Mother’s Day is certainly not the only day we should celebrate these incredible people but it is a good excuse to shower them with gifts. And jewelry is the perfect way to make someone feel special on Mother’s Day—and each day they wear it after that.
