HE SEPTEMBER issue in the maga zine world is the equivalent of a new year. The month marks the end of sum mer and brings a sense of change into the air. As the leaves change, the mood changes to a mindset of a fresh start in many ways—a new school year, new ways to entertain and celebrate, and of course the start of a new fashion season featuring Fall/Winter trends that will impact the wholeFashionyear.has never been immune to the realities of life. Although we sometimes prefer to lean in to fantasy on the runway rather than face all that exists outside of it, reality does still sink in. I of fer you a little visual escape in this issue’s fashion feature, Horse & SeptemberGlory. celebrates the start of a new academic year and here in Lake Forest, Spirit of 67 Foundation contin ues its legacy of over 30 years of giv ing to this district with the Home and Garden Tour. Our beloved Open Lands marks the coming of fall with a Scottish flair with the annual Bagpipes & Bonfire. An estimated 1,800 people will gather at Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve to eat, drink, and listen to bagpipes all while enjoying the igniting of the biggest bonfire I’ve ever seen.

Regardless of whether or not fall, winter, sum mer, or spring is your favorite season, I offer you this fall quote in hope of having you excited about the upcoming festivities—“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” F. Scott Fitzgerald, who famously spent a summer in Lake Forest before writing his iconic novel, The Great Gatsby, said those words that inspire me and hopefully will inspire you, too.

The History Center of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff celebrates Ed Wehmer as this year’s Local Legend. I had the pleasure of meeting Ed dur ing his photo shoot for his feature, “Community Banking Legend.” I would have never known of his remarkable accomplishments as he was as humble and approachable as the Dalai Lama. It was truly an honor to spend time getting to know him and his beautiful wife, Dorothy. Antiques & Treasures in the Field, hosted by the Lake Forest Chapter of Infant Welfare Society, is one of those beloved, must-attend September fun draisers that has become synonymous with the kickoff of fall. It promises to wow even the most particular shop pers at its 54th annual showing. Learn more about this beautiful event in “Treasure Trove.”

BETWEEN THE BLUFFS CULTURE & COMMUNITY 30 FOREST & BLUFF

OOK CLUBS are the invisible plaster holding our community together. Book clubs keep many of us sane, yet book clubs have adopted an unspoken “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The unwritten rule is you mustn’t tell a soul you’re in one, lest someone asks to join yours. Size matters, Sweet heart. You don’t want one that’s too big. Asking to join a book club is a faux pas, too, like sneezing on the queen or hugging your kids too long in the carpool line. You cannot socially recover.

B

IT’S BACK TO BOOK CLUB SEASON

A good book club has a certain je ne sais quois that’s not effortlessly attained. Overachievers ruin book clubs with their incessant need to actually read every book.

words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Batchell

Years ago, my book club read Gifts Of The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Anne was a wife, mother, writer, and pioneer aviator. On a whim, she buggered off to write a book at her family’s house by the sea. Must be nice, right? Morrow’s book is a classic, but reading it hollowed. me. out. I had a husband who traveled, three kids in college, and a middle schooler who unrelentingly pounded and peppered me with impossible demands. Even prisoners get paroled; I hadn’t experienced true freedom since Summerfest 1988. Collecting seashells in solitude sounded as likely as my kids thanking me for wiping down disgusting crud on our ketchup bottles. Fast forward to a pandemic, uninspiring twists of fate, and a world in fear. I was one minor inconvenience away from imploding. A book club friend picked up on the fact I was one step away from running away and never coming back, probably because I told her I was one step away from running away and never coming back. She gifted me her parents’ house by the sea so I could write the darn book already. I’d mention her by name, but I’m pretty sure we have ordinances that make it illegal for desperate, privacy-deprived, zombie-like women from congregating and clamoring about in front yards beg ging for beach houses. I learned a lot from my month at the beach. First, I am no elegant Anne Marrow; I delete a lot of swear words and forget to shower. Second, I am not a nature per son. I’m not fond of nature judging me from bushes or lunging at me from under laundry baskets. I do not like nature skittering across my feet when I write. This is the most important thing, though: everyone needs an escape. Do you know one person who is truly OK? You don’t. Even the people you think are perfect, who are all smiles, and who look great in Lululemon? They’re barely hanging on. The ones with the perfect social me dia feed? They’re suffering. Our souls are stretched. We needLet’sconnection.burnthe Book Club Rule Book: start a book club, ask to join one, or invite others to join yours. Support each other. Share ideas. Laugh. Escape your wor ries one book at a time. Is it possible book clubs could save the world? I say we find out. T-Ann Pierce is a F&B contributor and confidence coach. Be in touch! She won’t ask about your book club, she prom ises. Drop her a line at betweenthebluffs@jwcmedia.com.

Instagram influencer types, obsessed with creating ex quisite book-themed snacks, should be allowed in spar ingly. Keep in mind that women with perfect kids can feel alienated if they can’t passionately participate in the obligatory vent-about-our-ungrateful-children portion of book club. Bonafide historians are a risk with their zeal for accuracy. It seems obvious but also avoid people who favor only bleak Nordic crime novels set in gloomy locations with morose detectives; life is too short. When you find a good book club, protect it like your teenager protects an alibi.

The time draws nigh for Bagpipes & Bonfire, a highly moving, fun-filled family and community event that reminds residents of the Lake Forest Open Lands Association’s vital mission.

F

The first official Bagpipes & Bonfire was held in 1988, behind the efforts of an inspired John Dick. Dick grew up in a house next to Shaw Prairie and was 4 or 5 years old when he witnessed Scottish neighbors Shaws and McCutcheons host friends for a bonfire in the Fall. You don’t forget a fiery fest like that.

Dick had encouraged Pruett years ago to try his hand in the exercise that rewards technique as much as it does strength. A track and field athlete (shot put, hurdles) and football player (fullback/punter) in his early days , Pruett has won a Bagpipes and Bonfire medal in the caber toss and earned a national ranking in the discipline. “It’s not that great,” the humble Pruett says of the ranking. “I’m near the bottom of the stack, but it’s an honor to compete”

The Pruetts have three children: son Shelby, daughter Grayson, and son Reding. Grayson, a student at Vil lanova University, participated in LFOLA’s Center for Conservation Leadership program when she was 14. “It was life-changing for her,” her mother says.

Visit lfola.org/2022 for more information about Bagpipes & Bonfire. Email events@lfola or call 847-234-3880, ex tension 17, for sponsorship opportunities. Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve is located at 1401 Middlefork Drive in Lake Forest.

Lake Bluff resident and Lake Forest High School New Media teacher/soccer coach Steve Douglass has attended more than a dozen Bagpipes and Bonfire gatherings, with his wife, Amy, and their sons, Jack and Peter, joining him at many of them. “It’s such a unique benefit,” Douglass says. “Bagpipes and Bonfire has beauty, pageantry, and history. Shelby and Elizabeth Pruett have never failed to feel such a rush of excitement during that resounding mo ment at Bagpipes & Bonfire—Lake Forest Open Lands Association’s (LFOLA) annual and multigenerational fundraiser held at Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve in Lake“PiperForest.music reaches deep down and touches my soul, every time I hear it,” says Shelby Pruett, a Lake Forest resident for 20 years and a serial Bagpipes & Bonfire attendee with his family. “It’s such a distinctive sound.” But there’s much more to the beloved tradition than the music that conjures up kilts, sturdy castles, haggis, iconic golf courses, forever-gray skies, and memorable scenes from the movie Braveheart. There’s also Scot tish dancing, along with field games, children’s crafts, and other activities for kids, adults competing in Highland Games events, live music, the ever-popular apple launcher station (to be underwritten by Price Insurance), and the presence of animals—with human guides—from the Wildlife Discovery Center. “There’s the dramatic procession of the 100-plus pip ers as well, culminating with a piper on the pyre and the lighting of the bonfire,” Shelby Pruett adds. “It’s a unique occasion for a unique association, and it’s staged for a special community.” It’s part carnival, part picnic, part concert, part Olym pics-ish Games, part outdoor museum, part celebration, partTherevue.sum of all parts: spectacular. Shelby and his wife, Elizabeth—daughter of the late Rhett Butler, Lake Forest’s mayor from 1993-1996— will serve as co-chairs for this fall’s edition of Bagpipes & Bonfire, set for Sunday, September 25, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine (tartans optional). The annual fete that announces Autumn is estimated to bring between 1,500 to 1,700 residents and guests.

Shelby Pruett’s present passion, athletics-wise, this time of year is the caber toss, one of several Bagpipes & Bonfire Highland Games events. Each entrant balances a long, heavy tapered wooden pole—picture a thin tele phone pole—vertically on one end. The caber is usually made from a larch tree. The main objective is to toss the caber end over end, falling directly away from the thrower in the 12:00 position.

Northern Trust is its Presenting Sponsor. Bagpipes & Bonfire began as a small neighborhood event. In 1928 Evelyn Shaw McCutcheon welcomed local gardeners to bring brush and cuttings of sum mer to her property behind Shaw Prairie—located in LFOLA’s Skokie River Nature Preserve—for an annual bonfire and family picnic.

When Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFO LA) emerged as an independently funded conservation and educational organization in Lake County decades later, Dick’s brainchild for an extraordinary funder to support a critical cause won approval. Since 1967 Lake Forest Open Lands has acquired, preserved, restored and maintained nearly 900 acres of highly diverse native landscapes. LFOLA’s mission is to connect all to nature through outreach and land stewardship. “Lake Forest Open Lands Association exists for the benefit of our entire community,” Elizabeth Pruett says. “The organization’s founders had the foresight to think, ‘We must protect land and ensure that it is set aside for future generations.’ Such a commitment continues. It’s wonderful to see children at each Bagpipes and Bonfire running around, interacting with others in-person, and having fun—outside, away from their devices. “There’s nothing like it,” she adds. “The event ac knowledges the importance of stewardship, enjoying the present and looking to the future.”

All proceeds from Antiques & Treasures benefit IWS Family Health, once called the Angel Harvey Family Health Center, funded by the Lake Forest Chapter of Infant Welfare Society. The Logan Square-based health center in Chicago provides heathcare services and edu cation to medically underserved and vulnerable families in the Chicagoland area. At IWS Family Health, their goal is to build a community of children and families with healthy bodies and minds. One of the first stops shoppers often make is to the Treasures Tent that features donations from local fami lies and estates, as well as from Anna Schuster, owner of Anna’s Mostly Mahogany store in Highwood. “Anna is long-time honorary member of the Lake Forest Chapter of Infant Welfare Society,” says co-chair Shannon Shader, who along with Courtney Maglio chetti, is overseeing this fundraiser. “What most people don’t know is that Anna has donated 100% of her pro ceeds to Infant Welfare every year that she has been a part of it. It only seems right that she is recognized for her incredibly generous contributions.”

ANTIQUES & TREASURES in the Field, hosted by the Lake Forest Chap ter of Infant Welfare Society, is one of those beloved, must-attend September fundraisers that has become synony mous with the kickoff of fall. This year, it will be held on Sunday, September 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the fields behind Deer Path Middle School in Lake “We’reForest.always surprised that even in years where it seems to rain all day, we somehow make more money than we did the year before,” says Chrissy Davis, presi dent of the Lake Forest chapter.

The nearly 30+ vendors for this year’s event have been carefully curated under the watchful eye of board member Eva Rice. Besides the Showhouse & Gardens event that the Lake Forest chapter hosts every other year, Antiques & Treasures in the Field is the biggest fundraiser for IWS Family Health. “The antique sale is one of the best events we have,” adds Davis, who says that the chapter has recently begun introducing smaller fundraising events, including a recent book signing at the beautiful home of a board member. “It brings the community together, builds our board, and significantly supports the efforts of Infant Welfare.”

In addition to the Treasures Tent, Antiques & Trea sures raises money with an entrance fee, vendor booth fee, food trucks, and bake sale. This year, donations will also be collected specifically for an IWS Family Health’s wish list item—an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine to do heart screenings.

“In 2021, we turned our Junior Board of grade school high school students loose collecting donations,” Da vis says. “They raised more than $1,800 for a machine the clinic asked for that detects lead paint in a patient’s bloodstream. I have a hunch these students will be even more successful this year.”

“We have a lot of experts on our team, which is unique for a com pany of this size,” says Thornton. “It’s been fun to be creative again. I have a renewed appreciation for the industry and for what we do on a daily basis; that is, make people’s dreams come true and create memories that last a lifetime.”

According to Thornton, Western Europe such as France, Spain, Italy, England, and Ireland, is extremely popular right now, along with South Africa, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Greece, French Polynesia, the Maldives, and Dubai.

T

For clients concerned about traveling safely due to COVID or global unrest, Thornton recommends a private yacht charter in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, or an African Safari. Royal Travel has seen an increase in clients renting Richard Branson’s islands in the British Virgin Islands for a private experience.

Regardless of destination, some travelers are looking for authen ticity and are hoping for a full immersion in the cultures of their destination. Others are embracing wellness, hoping to relax and unplug after a tumultuous few years. And some are leaning into gluttony, opting for food- and wine-appreciation trips.

Thornton herself is on the advisory board of Travel + Leisure magazine, and two of Royal Travel advisors – Brittney Magner and Melissa Lee – are on the magazine’s A-list. Two others – Stacey Cohen and Tara Koehler – have been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler as best in the industry. Ashley Gallo of Lake Bluff is a rec ognized expert on travel to the Middle East and recently appeared in Travel + Leisure magazine as the face of Dubai tourism.

To celebrate, Thornton has a variety of special moments planned throughout the year. She will be taking Royal Travel’s top sellers to Hawaii this month for a wellness-inspired retreat at the new Four Seasons Sensei Lanai. The team will also host a company party this fall and head to Vegas for their industry conference in November. They’ll plan a small client event in Dekalb, Illinois—where Thorn ton’s parents first launched the company—to honor this impressive milestone.“Theteam has worked so hard,” explains Thornton. “Besides event and wedding planners, our industry was one of the hardest hit by COVID. We had to reschedule or rebook the same trip upward of four or five times, and at the same time handled thousands of trip cancellations. We’ve kept our spirits high, stayed ahead of COVID protocols globally, and still always put the client first.” Business, she says, has been booming as people return to travel.

“We are seeing a lot of multi-generational trips, too,” says Thorn ton. “People have missed out on a lot of birthdays and holidays, so they’re making up for lost time.”

HIS YEAR, family-owned travel agency Royal Travel & Tours will celebrate 50 years of business. Founded in 1972 by Larry and Kay Berke, the agency is now owned and run by their daughter Kendra Thornton, who took the reins in 2016 and relocated the business to “It’sWinnetka.pretty rare to still be family-owned and operated at the size we are,” says Thornton. “We have 14 advisors on our team and have continued to be one of the top-selling leisure agencies in northern Illinois for decades. Our team has traveled collectively to nearly 150 countries and we bring that knowledge and experience back to our clients”With half a century of experience, the Royal Travel team has un paralleled knowledge of—and access to—the finest travel experi ences in the world. “Coming out of COVID makes the 50-year milestone even sweeter,” says Thornton. “We survived in an industry hard hit by the pandemic and are starting to thrive again. Being part of the North Shore community and western suburbs has been the biggest reason we’re still here. It’s an incredible community that not only values supporting local businesses but that also puts travel, experiences, and time with family and friends above so many other things.”

She recommends beginning to plan a major trip about a year in ad vance to ensure you are able to book the accommodations, travel, and activities you are most looking forward to enjoying while traveling.

And the industry has evolved to become more tech-forward, with touchless check-in to minimize human-to-human contacts, QR codes at restaurants for menu access, and more. As such, the Royal Travel team has seen an influx of both last-minute travel as well as bucket list trip planning.

TRAVEL GURU

Thornton and her team travel extensively to stay abreast of the latest trends. Thornton has already visited Cuba, Hawaii, Mexico, London, and South Africa this year and she will head to Turkey, Greece, and Spain this summer. Her team has been busy traveling as well, spending time in Saudi Arabia, England, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Dubai, and more, in what Thornton calls a “can vas of the continents” that’s an effort to “practice what we preach.”

The team creates fully customized itineraries for their clients in a process Thornton likens to that of a personal shopper. Some clients like to be fully booked with every minute planned, while others prefer to lock in the hotel and flights with more time to wing it. The Royal Travel team keeps that in mind, planning a trip 100 percent unique to the traveler.

Often there is no need to make decisions immedi ately. Other times there is a benefit to moving quick ly. It is best to know as much about the situation as possible before you have to make decisions. It is also important to have an understanding of the divorce process and a checklist that allows you to make sure everything remains status quo while you explore your next steps. In addition to calling a divorce lawyer, it is a good idea to obtain a counselor or therapist to help you traverse the emotional aspects of this dis covery. Relying on family, friends, coworkers, or even worse your spouse or attorney to help you navigate the emotional turmoil is ineffective and often detri mental. If you do not feel relief and confidence after you meet with the first therapist, meet with another. Quality professional relationships are essential.

What to do when you catch your spouse cheating?

A majority of divorces are sparked by a sudden awareness that one party or the other has found someone else. That is almost never the root problem. Few people choose to cheat on their spouse when they are happily married. The underlying (often long-term) acrimony makes the divorce process very difficult, so obtaining good counsel and a therapist will help. Charting a path of least resistance with little drama and bitterness is ideal. If you are able to envision what your life will look like six months or a year out, it makes the journey less painful and scary.

While the chops marinate, make the sauce. Combine all sauce ingredients in a small pot over medium heat. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat to simmer and crush ber ries with a potato masher. Simmer for 10 minutes. Pour contents of pot into a fine mesh strainer, capturing the liquid in a bowl. Discard solids from mesh strainer. Place liquid back into pot and simmer until reduced into sauce consistency (about 8 minutes.) Taste to adjust seasoning for desired sweetness. Add a bit more agave nectar if needed.

MAKE MARINADE Combine olive oil, crushed currants, minced garlic, chopped rosemary leaves, salt and pepper.

Rinse and pat dry chops. Place in a Ziplock bag or shal low glass bowl and add marinade, massage marinade into the chops. Place in refrigerator to marinate for 1 hour, turning chops over half way through chilling time.

• 1 cup red and 1 cup white currants OR 2 cups red • 1/8 tsp fresh garlic, very finely minced

• Leaves from 1 spring of rosemary, chopped • 1 small shallot, peeled and finely chopped OR 2 Tbsp finely minced sweet onion

Heat grill to medium high. Remove chops from mari nade pat off excess liquid and place on grill. Sear 3 min utes on one side; flip and sear another three minutes on other side. Continue grilling until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. Remove chops from grill and allow to rest for ten minutes. SERVE Plate each chop, drizzle with currant sauce. Garnish with rosemary sprig and a few fresh currant berries. I like to serve this with quick-sauteed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes.

F RESH CURRANT BERRIES are the cu linary pearls of the fruit family. A member of the gooseberry family native to Europe, currants also grow here. White or red, each tiny fruit pops with a burst of tart sweetness, with flavor a bit like cranberry, but brighter. Thinking those flavors would be very nice with meat sent me to the kitchen to work up both a sauce, and marinade to prepare for nice, fat grilled bone-in pork chops. To make it, you’ll use most of the same ingredients in the mari nade and the sauce. The sauce also has some port, fresh lemon, shallot, and agave nectar in it.

The Spirit of 67 Foundation’s annual home tour on September 29 takes guests inside and outside some of Lake Forest’s most exquisite properties. Frequently noted as the “best of the best” on the North Shore, the fundraising event is open to the public.

“We hope everyone feels welcome to attend—wheth er you have students in our district or not. It is not un usual for grandparents, neighbors, alumni, or friends to join in on this special fundraising event,” concludes Korczak. “It easily becomes the talk of the town. Let’s just say the Spirit of 67 home tour will be the place to be on September 29.”

The change was inspired by the success of last year’s tour, which was reinvented to accommodate COV ID-19 restrictions. “It was held almost entirely outdoors, mirroring the entertainment trends during the pandemic. Guests were able to enjoy the homes’ beautiful gardens, outdoor entertainment spaces, terraces, and pool houses,” adds Anna Theodore, VP of Communications. “The event was so successful and beautiful that we have decided to highlight outdoor spaces again while returning to fea turing some interiors as well—giving our guests the best of both Guestsworlds.”whoamble through the homes and gardens on this year’s tour will once again be able to enjoy small bites and beverages offered at each of the properties. The committee plans to highlight “tastes of the town” with samples from some of Lake Forest’s most coveted res taurants and caterers.

As always, local designers and shops will set tanta lizing tables that will be available to win or purchase. Fabulous florals displayed at each home will also be in cluded among the raffle options.

“The committee organizing the home tour works tirelessly to consider every detail which is what makes it enormously enjoyable for our guests,” Spirit of 67 Presi dent Nicole Korczak says, adding that the tour will also showcase some of the grants that are awarded to Dis trict 67 schools. “Many grant awards will be displayed and even demonstrated for guests to see first-hand how their support positively impacts our children’s educa tion. Additionally, student musicians and singers will provide beautiful entertainment at each of the houses, highlighting the enhancements made to our arts and music programs in District 67.”

The first Spirit of 67 Home Tour was held in 2003 and has evolved throughout the years, cultivating a faithful following among District 67 families and North Shore home tour enthusiasts alike.

“At times it was held annually; other times it was held every other year,” Korczak explains. “Since many people are currently still enjoying time with friends in the fresh air, we are excited to take advantage of our beautiful Septembers and host the tour again in the fall this year. It is nice to have the gardens still flourishing and outdoor spaces on the cusp of changing from sum mer to autumnal entertainment spaces.”

“Unlike most home tours, the Spirit of 67 Foundation’s signature event provides guests with the opportunity to experience multiple homes in one day, most within bik ing or walking distance. It entices every sense—visually stimulating décor; aromatic and colorful gardens; tasty small bites and beverages; and cheerful chatter with friends encountered along the way.”

It takes a village indeed, Turner is quick to add, thanking everyone involved for making this signature fundraiser a reality. She says guests often cherish the program book they receive with admission and report feeling inspired to make enhancements to their own homes after the tour.

Since its founding, the Spirit has contributed almost $6 million in grants to support excellence in District 67 schools—providing curricular enhancements, resources, and tools that enrich the educational experiences of all students. This lasting legacy is due to a team of dedi cated volunteers, the generosity of district families, and the commitment of local businesses to support the mis sion of the “ThroughoutSpirit.their education in the district, our children benefit from grants in language arts, fine arts, wellness, math, technology, emotional wellness, science, social studies, and world language,” she says. “Each year, grant requests can be submitted by any of our stake holders—teachers, principals, parents, or students who identify an opportunity to add enrichment to the cur riculum—who write and submit a request for a grant.”

FOREST & BLUFF 57 HOME TOUR HOUSE & GARDEN F OR NEARLY 20 YEARS, the Spirit of 67 Foundation has been raising money for programs to enhance the education of District 67 students with a home tour like no other. While participants never know exactly which grand houses or estates are included until the day of the event, what they do know is that they will all be phenomenal.

“The Spirit of 67 Home Tour always represents the beauty and elegance of Lake Forest, the generosity of its patrons and sponsors, the camaraderie of friends that tour the homes together, and a unanimous interest in supporting the students in our town,” explains Courtney Turner, Vice President of Events for the Spirit of 67.

This year’s “Home and Garden Tour,” held on Thurs day, September 29, features four Lake Forest homes— including two located on Lake Michigan with breath taking views of the water and beach. For the first time in the event’s history, the 2022 tour will feature both picturesque interiors and resort-like exteriors, all im peccably decorated to represent the finest in North Shore“Thereliving.are expansive backyards and gorgeous gardens in all, as well as cozy and intimate spaces,” Turner says. “The variety of homes and spaces that will be on tour perfectly characterize the allure of Lake Forest. We can not wait for our guests to see them.”

One of the most useful drawers for the home chef is under the stove top. This space is often under-utilized and can house every day cooking tools. If you like an organized kitchen, add drawers!

Today’s drawers aren’t just for utensils; they’re for plates, pans, kitchen appliances, even coffee implements.

DESIGN YOUR NEW KITCHEN FOR OPTIMUM ORGANIZATION

Kashian Bros is located in downtown Lake Forest and Wilmette. For more information, call 847-251-1200 or visit kashianbros.com.

One of our favorite places to add a drawer is under the sink. This allows you to con veniently access a space which is typically chaotic or under-utilized.

Lake Forest’s KASHIAN BROS suggests adding specialized drawers to increase organizational capabilities.

ABINET DRAWERS are recreating today’s kitchen by of fering dedicated spaces for items that were often tossed together in an ad-hoc way. The idea of a kitchen drawer isn’t radical, but the array of cabinet drawers available to homeowners has dra matically increased in recent years.

C

Many of us have retro-fitted cabinet or ganizers to optimize space and accessibility. The solutions are often good, but building the organization into your kitchen allows you to create and maintain a consistent style throughout your kitchen. In other words, the insides of the cabinets can now look as sleek and polished as the outside.

An innovative way to use a small drawer is as a charging station. Instead of leaving cords and phones out where they create clutter, you can tuck them safely into small drawer as they recharge.

words by Mitch Hurst | photography by Ian McLeod

“We still provide that good, high-touch, high-tech service. Better products, better delivery systems, kill them with service,” Wehmer says. “You’ve got to think small. As soon as you think big you lose that common touch.” Wintrust remains committed to the communities in which it operates. Of the 15 banks that make up the company, 14 have out standing Community Reinvestment Act ratings, a designation only three percent of banks in the U.S. achieve. It has won the JD Power Award for customer service multiple times, as well as the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethics.

“It was right when Illinois changed its laws and bank mergers started happening in mass,” Wehmer says. “I had a mentor who said, ‘Ed, go figure out how to merge banks’ and I said, ‘Well, OK’. I ended up running the acquisition area at Ernst for two years.” After working for several banks as CFO and helping them acquire other banks, Wehmer decided to strike out on his own in 1991, and what would eventually become Wintrust was born.

“All the great community banks were bought by the big banks, and people were really upset with the fact that they were getting commoditized, and the banks weren’t providing the services they once did,” he says. “So, we used a model based on the community banks of the past.” Wintrust now comprises 15 chartered banks with 180 locations that span from Milwaukee to Northwest Indiana, all branded by the names of the towns in which they are located. It’s a $52 billion organization with around $40 billion in assets under management.

Wehmer’s is a classic North Shore story. He grew up in Ke nilworth and attended Faith, Hope, and Charity School in Win netka and Loyola Academy in Wilmette before heading off to Georgetown University in Washington, DC to study accounting.

While at Georgetown, he decided to study finance in addition to accounting and that decision would ultimately lead to his now 30year career in banking and steering the ship that is now Wintrust.

This year’s honoree, Ed Wehmer, built Wintrust Bank with a mix of luck, moxie, and a commitment to community banking. His legacy will be celebrated October 21 at the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff. OR THE MAN who built the Wintrust Bank em pire, Ed Wehmer is remarkably unassuming. For sure, the former rugby player knows how to compete in the dog-eat-dog world of banking, but he doesn’t wear it on his sleeve. The Lake Forest resident would much rather talk about his North Shore roots and his family than the fact that Wintrust is the second largest bank headquartered in Illinois.

“A friend of mine, we were in my room one day, and he figured out how we could get two degrees for the price of one,” Wehmer says.

“I was downtown working all the time and never got to see the kids, working 12-hour days and Saturdays and I said, ‘Well that stinks’,” he says. “I could see the kids more, and sure enough, the banker in town got to coach the kids in basketball, football, you nameWehmerit.” also says Lake Forest was the perfect place to raise a family.“It’s a great place to raise our kids. When we got married, we had a condo in Old Town then we moved to Northfield for seven years and then in 1980 we built a house in the Ponds of Lake Forest and love it up here,” Wehmer says. “It’s just such a great community and has a great Midwestern feel. I pinch myself every day, how lucky we are.”

FOREST & BLUFF 77

“I figured out how to start a bank and took a big cut in pay and rented an old building in Lake Forest, showed up for work and didn’t have anywhere to sit or a phone,” he says. “I got one of those mobile phones that was as big as a boot and sat in Market Square to make calls and get going.” He acquired Lake Forest Bank and Trust the day after Labor Day in 1991 and by December had 11 employees. He reopened its door in Lake Forest two days after Christmas and has never looked back. In subsequent years he would go on to open banks in Hinsdale, Wilmette, and Libertyville. “In ’96, I ran out of friends and neighbors and family to raise money from. We were growing so fast I was always out raising capi tal,” Wehmer says. “I gained like forty pounds—two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners. It was wild.” Eventually, the banks were put into a holding company and con solidated under the Wintrust name, although the individual banks retain their community identities. Wehmer says the rapid growth of the company is due to its focus on serving communities, something that was lost during the frenzy of bank mergers that have occurred the past three decades.

“It’s the shareholders, the customers, the communities we serve, and our employees; those are our four pillars,” he says. “The idea was as we built out the company with our employees to keep decisions as close to the customer as possible, and people have to be involved in the town where they live and work.”

Words like “lucky” and “fortunate” are sprinkled in the language he uses to describe his banking career.

The Center cites Wehmer’s commitment to the community by serving on many nonprofit boards, and that his involvement in the community ensures that children and adults alike are healthy, both physically and financially.

“I thought, ‘That’s a good idea’. So, I took five more classes and one Summer School class and got a degree in accounting and in finance. I got two diplomas; pretty cool.” After Georgetown, Wehmer got his CPA and ended up at Ernst & Ernst (Ernst & Young today) and worked with manufacturing, distribution, and insurance clients, but he gravited toward banking, spending time with tax staff and auditors.

Wehmer has six children raging in ages now from 42 to 28. They were a major reason he decided to start the company in Lake Forest. He wanted to spend more time with his kids.

The problem with hair removal in the past is that it HURTS and requires multiple treatments. Motus AZ+ is the latest and best device on the market for painfree hair removal. This is an Alexandrite laser that can be used to treat hair removal for both light and dark skin types. The ability to treat more skin types comfortably is the result of Motus’ exclusive energy delivery technology, moveo (Italian for “move”).

Well, I guess I can’t solve all of our dilemmas but we are happy to introduce Motus AZ+ to our patients at Skin Deep Medical Spa. We are confident that this new technology will make at least one dilemma a thing of the past.

The Motus Devices are the only aesthetic systems to employ moveo technology, an in-motion delivery that uses simple, continu ous movements over a small area to gradually deliver a desired dos age of energy without damaging the surrounding skin. Moveo made it possible for the Motus systems to break the traditional trade-off

Other uses for the Motus AZ+ include pigmented lesion reduc tion, skin revitalization, and vascular lesion reduction.

T FIRST, the celebrity connection may not be obvious. Sure, the SelvaRey Rum brand has a retro swagger and an air of luxury, but once you learn that one of the co-owners (and a fervent supporter) is none other than Grammy Awardwinner Bruno Mars, it all begins to make sense. Its simplicity (aged, single estate rums from Panama) is timeless; its flavor (choose from white, chocolate, or coconut) is next level delicious. So, we were beyond thrilled to be among a select group of guests invited to taste the rum at an intimate event at the Fairmont Chicago hotel with Mars himself. With a mission to promote a new collab between the Fairmont and SelvaRey, we were offered a choice of three custom-designed cocktails made with three flavors of the rum—all paired with charcuterie boards that exceeded culi nary expectations. Our Editor’s Choice was the blue cocktail, which was reminiscent of a sandy beach in the Dominican Republic. As for Bruno, he brought his signature energy in a vintage 1980s en semble, finished with a Prada bucket hat, joining the brand’s three founders for a lively Q&A. We left feeling inspired by the recipes (with more than a few fabulous ideas for which tropical locale we’d next like to savor them). Taste for yourself at the Fairmont Chicago bar or visit selvarey.com for a list of local restaurants and stores that carry Bruno’s iconic brand.
