HE FEBRUARY issue explores this amorphous force of nature we call love and the many ways it is expressed. Two of our feature stories celebrate couples who met at Lake Forest High School and went on to marry—one, a pair of ebullient newlyweds still living in the city, the other, a seasoned duo who returned decades ago to raise a family. Both couples are deeply rooted in our community. With my Valentine and Our third feature, “Fulfilling a Community’s Critihusband of 23 years, Tim. cal Needs,” shares a different kind of love story—the tender work done by Annie McEveeney and her team at Fill a Heart 4 Kids. The Lake Forest based nonprofit helps fulfill the needs of children living in group homes, including the Lydia Home for Boys and Girls. McEveeney and her volunteers bring much needed warmth, educational support, experiences, and necessities to Chicago area homeless and foster children, restoring their dignity in the process. Love for children and community also pour into the work of Melanie Upfold, director of the Episcopal Preschool in Lake Forest. Along with her diligent team members, Upfold has made it her mission to maintain a sense of normalcy for the school’s children and families during COVID-19. Preparing a meal pour ton amour is a classic expression of love. Inspired by 17th century Dutch still life painting—an example of which can be seen in the THE DISH Table of Contents—this month’s Entertaining brings a visually stunning Valentine’s Day feast to life. Easily translated to the home table for two, it requires little

The Lifestyle List offers ideas for Valentine’s Day dressing and gifting, whether the celebration is a cozy night of streaming and champagne (and perhaps a Peanut Butter-Chocolate Mousse Parfait from The Dish?) or a sumptuous feast by the fire. Chilean poet and Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda once wrote, “To feel the love of people whom we love is a fire that feeds our life.” The stories held on these February pages are surely a demonstration of his sentiment.

A 70-YEAR COMMUNITY TRADITION REIMAGINED
I
N A NORMAL YEAR, the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest’s Rummage Sale relies on thousands of shoppers converging on the church for a one-day event for its success, grossing $200,000 annually. Visitors from far and wide gather under giant tents and inside rooms where nearly every inch of space is covered with tens of thousands of items. Every piece is dutifully sorted, priced, and displayed in sale departments by hundreds of volunteers. Traditionally, 95 percent of items sell for under twenty dollars, and the vast majority sell for even less than five dollars. The big question Rummage Sale organizers faced in the era of COVID-19 was, “How can we pivot and do this online?” The team did not immediately know what to do, but knew it needed to quickly find a solution. The church’s mission partners—including Mother’s Trust, Veteran’s RR, PADS (Providing Advocacy, Dignity and Shelter), Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center, Beacon Place, Wings, and Waukegan and North Chicago Bible Society Prison Outreach —could not wait. 100 percent of proceeds go right back out the door, and these partners were relying on help more than ever.
The organiz ers decided to highlight individual sale departments, which have a devoted following—and items that sell at a higher price point. They learned early on that most people do not want to shop on-line and drive across town to pick up a two-dollar flowerpot, even with curbside pick-up as an option. Now, the more valuable toys, clothing, jewelry, sporting goods, china, and beautiful antiques from its famous Treasures department can be browsed, bid on, and bought online. A sale begins every two weeks and February will focus on china. A new feature for 2021 will be the addition of a preview time where shoppers can see the individual items and descriptions prior to the start of the sale. The Episcopal Preschool Director Melanie Upfold puts her focus on the positive as pandemic continues. words by Tricia Despres photography by Victoria Hansen
E
VERY DAY, she sees them, young students with enthusiastic minds and caring hearts confidently walking through the doors of The Episcopal Preschool (EPS) of Lake Forest, eager to begin a new day. And Melanie Upfold cannot help but smile. “Even with their masks on, you can still see glimpses of their joy,” gushes the EPS Director, who officially took the helm of the much-loved school in July 2020. “You can see it in their eyes. They come to school happy. And during times where they can take their masks off, we once again see their smiles, and that’s why we are here. For a moment, it can feel as if nothing has changed.” But indeed, everything has changed. An ongoing pandemic has altered the day to day workings of EPS, a fixture within the Lake Forest community with a long legacy of inspiring the littlest of hearts via a mix of creativity, academics, and signature play-based learning. These days, students and staff undergo temperature and symptom checks, wear face coverings, and utilize individual supplies for the safety of each other. “It’s amazing how fast children can adapt,” explains Upfold, who took on the role of director upon the retirement of Melissa Cunniff, who had devoted 22 years to the preschool. “Children are so flexible. They just continue on their way with a

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD mask on their face and hand sanitizer on their hands. It has not phased them. They still enjoy story time and their music and movement time, and they love being able to interact with their friends. It has been amazing to see them lead us as well. They have shown us that it’s going to be OK and we are going to get through this together. We are all going to be stronger because of this.” That is not to say that the past year has not held its share of challenges. At this time last year, Upfold found herself considering a move to the director position at the school, an outreach ministry of The Church of the Holy Spirit (CHS), just as humanity headed into what would soon become the catastrophic, pandemic-stained year of 2020. “I had worked here for so many years with former Director Melissa Cunniff, so I felt like I had a pretty good grasp of what I was dealing with,” remembers Upfold, who holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of Newcastle, Australia. Indeed, Upfold knew firsthand the spirit of its staff and students, and even knew the school from the viewpoint of a parent, as she had sent her own children to the school. “And then March turned up,” she remembers. “And seemingly overnight, it was a whole different picture. It was nerve-racking.” Suddenly, Upfold found herself as one of the countless educators having to deal with the relentless pressures of a COVID-19 pandemic and the roller coaster of restrictions that would soon face her and her staff every day. “When we closed our doors on March 13, we thought it would just be for a couple of weeks,” recalls Upfold, whose school educates children from 2 to 5 years old. “By Monday, we were already reaching out with our favorite Play Doh recipe. It was so sudden and there was so much that was unknown. We really wanted to maintain our connection with our children. So, we did that via a wide range of video content and Facetime calls with the children. We wanted to maintain a sense of normalcy for them and a routine for everyone.” However, they soon realized—along with the rest of the world—that the pandemic was not going away anytime soon. Virtual learning continued through the remainder of the Preschool student Luke 2019-2020 school year and busy at work. despite the unusual circumstances, EPS students continued to thrive. “Obviously, my 2-year-old daughter Adriana did not understand the situation, but once we started Facetiming with her teacher, she started opening up more,” explains EPS parent Alexandra Priola. “She looked forward to those one-on-one conversations in an intimate setting. She had homework to do and stories to read and songs to sing, and she thrived.” Even more impressive was

the communication between the school and exasperated parents looking for answers. “As a parent, one of the best things EPS did was maintain open and honest communication the whole way through,” explains Priola. “They were checking all the boxes and maintaining best practices through it all. They would even host conference calls for the parents, where we all could listen and react and learn. Everyone’s voices were being heard. A number of the parents are doctors and lawyers, and they were providing their perspectives as well. We were working as a true community.” And by last fall, Upfold and her entire team were able to offer students in-person learning, while taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safest of environments. “Since being back, it really has been pretty seamless,” remarks Priola. “As a parent, you not only have this fear of children falling back academically, but you also want them to be able to maintain social interactions in a safe way. And that’s exactly what EPS was able to do. My daughter still lights up when I ask her about her day. It’s such a comfort as a parent.” And while much of the future remains unknown, Upfold is strong in her position that she wants to continue offering an in-person education for all EPS students. “That’s always been our intention,” Upfold says. “As a DCFS facility, there are certain guidelines we need to adhere to, such as having smaller class sizes and having a heightened cleaning procedure. We are following procedures and implementing our own, and we continue to thrive. We are building community in and out of the classroom.” And it is this community that Upfold looks forward to being a part of for years to come. “From day one, we have all wanted the same thing, and that is to maintain the health and safety of our children,” she concludes. “And that’s exactly what we have done. Our children are happy and healthy, and we are all getting through this … together.”

O
NE YEAR AGO, my nightstand was essentially a simple shelving unit with one tiny drawer and open shelves—open shelves which drove my husband crazy with the menagerie of books, rotating found items, lotions, and potions, and dust. Since the “stuff ” was not going to change, we bought a pair with two drawers and an opening at the bottom. Voila! I was going to be organized and streamlined. Well … that did not happen. I have more “stuff ” in the drawers, the same number of books, and the nighttime necessities seem to have grown. What I display changes quite frequently as I am a hopeless rummage enthusiast. Pair this obsession with an Eldership at First Presbyterian Church Lake Forest (FPCLF) overseeing the Bi-Annual Rummage sale (requiring daily donation and sorting operations) and you create a reduce/reuse/recycle monster. It has been a passion and labor of love to work with our team of dedicated Rummage volunteers for the past three years. There are some involved who have been there for as many as 50 years since start of this mission 70 years ago! Mission is a major focus at FPCLF, and over 30 partners are supported through church fund donations and the proceeds from Rummage sales. Over 2 million dollars have been distributed to charity throughout seven decades of sales. One of the most brilliant relationships is with Beacon Place in Waukegan. During the sale week set-up, members of the Beacon Place community aid in set-up and then shop the sale. The organization then receives proceeds in the form of grants. A true full circle. Nothing goes to waste. When donations are dropped at

the church, they are sorted, then sale worthy items are packed and stored off-site until sale week. Damaged or broken items are sorted for textile recycling, local artisans for use in their creations, and special collections for area charities who are collecting specific items throughout the year. One of our biggest partners is WINGS Chicago, which takes our sales-worthy overflow to its shops to raise money for domestic abuse relief programs. Rummage aside, my nightstand collects books from the Lake Forest. Presently I am reading three of the Monks of New Skete tutorials on how to raise a puppy. Yes, we adopted a COVID-19 puppy and I need refresh on the basics. How quickly we forget how much work they are and what joy and love you receive in return! Also in the queue are The Happy, Healthy Non Profit and Ken Follett’s The Evening and the Morning, which I will read when I finally get some sleep. Although the top shelf books come and go, the bottom shelf is the permanent home of my heirloom bible gifted by a dear friend and the beautiful trinket box my son handmade for me. Finally, my most recent found item is a sweet frame from the rummage in which I placed a favorite picture of my dad the year before he died. We were all dressed up for church and I don’t even recall who snapped the pic. It was a happy time before he was taken from us by suicide. Seeing him before I turn off the light makes my heart happy and reminds me that everyone has a story, everyone is going through something, and to never forget to reach out to your people with messages of love as often as you can.

Call Burhops. Order a pre-steamed two-pound lobster that easily serves two (it will set you back a pretty guilder, but nothing kills the mood faster than crustacean murder), and a dozen oysters. Next, stop at the market to pick up good champagne, a fresh baguette, and nibbles—including his or her favorite cheeses and chocolates. STEP TWO. Pop into a local jeweler for pearls or cufflinks. It can’t hurt. STEP THREE. Chill the champagne. STEP FOUR. Pour yourself drink and set a beautiful table while listening to the playlist you’ve curated for the evening. STEP THREE. Cut a lemon into small wedges for the oyster platter. Shuck the oysters no more than two hours before serving. Place with their shells rounded-side down on a platter filled with crushed ice, preventing them from spilling their delicious briny liquor. Cover and chill until ready to eat.
S
UMPTUOUS displays of earthly delights were the subject of Dutch still life paintings in the second half of the 17th century. Oysters—considered to hold aphrodisiacal properties—were often depicted, as were half-peeled lemons, which connoted social status and allowed the artists to show off painting prowess. The presence of silk and precious seasonings like salt and pepper represented far-flung luxuries flowing into Dutch ports, and the placement of cheese showed pride in Dutch agriculture. Jewels, silver, and venetian glass vessels holding wine were quintessential symbols of luxury as were lush fruits and lobster, which could not be fished off the Dutch coast. Many of the objects displayed in 17th century still life paintings—and in the photograph above—hold the same connotations in today’s world. Sumptuous, silky, and aphrodisiacal … what more could one want out of Valentine’s Day?
STEP FOUR. Lay out the non-perishable elements of your Dutch still-life inspired side table, if desired. A stunning, pre-ordered floral arrangement for the dining table (no last-minute grocery store flowers allowed) is a suitable replacement. STEP FIVE. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Wrap the pre-steamed lobster in foil with four pats of salted butter and place on a baking sheet. Set aside while you slip upstairs and put on something fabulous. STEP SIX. Pop lobster into the pre-heated oven until heated through—about 20 to 30 minutes. Pour melted butter from the foil into a bowl for dipping. Keep warm. STEP SEVEN. Plate the nibbles. Pour the champagne. Set out the oysters. Restart the playlist while your significant other tears apart the lobster for the two of you to enjoy … it is time to relax and enjoy the (17th century-inspired) fruits of your labor. Chocolate-Peanut Butter Mousse Parfaits Serves 4 Make and assemble these parfaits in the morning and chill in refrig- Add melted chocolate and fold gently with a whisk until almost incorporated. ENEATH THE BARK of knobby tree branches reaching toward February’s grey sky, spring is beginning to swell. Many flowering trees and shrubs set buds during the previous growing season, and a close look will reveal rounded, plump flower buds and small, pointy leaf buds bulging from their barren branches. It is time to pull on the winter woolens and walk the yard with sharp, clean pruners in hand. Forcing branches into bloom is a simple and forgiving process, where they are coaxed into early flowering by emulating spring’s environment indoors. Trees and shrubs require a proper stretch of cold temperatures—six to eight weeks—for buds to experience a requisite dormancy that allows them to open. Lake Forest and Lake Bluff are situated in growing zone 5B, where cold temperatures have safely settled in by the time February rolls around. Following these easy steps will bring spirit-lifting blooms to your favorite room within a few days to a few weeks—long before outdoor specimens blossom.

A Monthly Guide for Seasoned and Aspiring Green Thumbs. • Choose a mild, above-freezing day so branches and buds are more pliable and less shocked by the transition indoors. • Look for younger branches approximately 1/2-inch in diameter and 12 to 18 inches long, with plenty of fat, round buds. Select non-essential branches that will not mar the shape of your tree or shrub. Branches with beautiful curves will make a more dynamic arrangement. • Prune from the widened base of the stem you plan to cut where it joins the larger branch or trunk, making a clean cut. • After removing desired number of branches, carefully cut two slits in a cross pattern into the pruned end of branches or tap gently with a hammer to facilitate water intake (smashing too hard will have the opposite effect). Immediately place in a bucket or sturdy vessel filled with warm water and some floral preservative. Alternatively, completely submerge and soak whole branches in water overnight in bathtub to speed the breaking of dormancy. • Arrange in a sturdy, water-filled vessel with floral preservative that will not topple from the weight of the branches. For shorter arrangements, cut branches to desired length, choosing sections with plenty of buds. • Place arrangement in a cool spot with bright, indirect light away from heat sources to prevent drying. Mist with water daily to keep buds from falling off, and change water every two to three days (sooner if water appears dirty) to keep bacteria at bay.
The following are some suggested trees and shrubs for forcing. Specimens that are cut closer to their natural blooming time will have a shorter forcing time. Forsythia and pear, for example, bloom early, making late January and early February a great time to prune. Lilac and dogwood bloom later in spring, so late February and early March are safer bets for forcing success. • • • • • • • • • • • •

N MID-DECEMBER, with his final prep swimming season on pause and his “commute” to school roughly the distance between his bed and a nearby computer screen, Lake Forest High School senior Andrew Clemmensen had not let the pandemic discourage him in the least. Thoughts of a brave water boy from another generation—his late grandfather Richard Clemmensen, Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy and a World War II veteran—fueled Andrew’s positive approach in and out of the pool during uncertain times. Richard died in Oak Brook in 2015, at age 87. “They rushed my grandfather to graduate from high school early, about halfway through his senior year, before he headed overseas to fight,” the 17-year-old Clemmensen says, adding Grandpa Dick commanded instant respect and radiated kindness. “Imagine the toughness he and other kids had to have when they were fighting for our country at such a young age. Their generation … it went through the Great Depression, disease, war. People made a lot of sacrifices and persevered. I’m kind of missing my senior year, as are my classmates, all while dealing with an entirely different kind of challenge. “We, too, can get though this with perseverance.” With words like those, ones capable of galvanizing any kind of squad, no wonder Clemmensen was named one of five captains for the Scouts’ boys swimming and diving team under coach Cindy Dell in the 2020-2021 season. Exhibit B: Clemmensen oversaw the construction of two tables—each built for able-bodied people and people with disabilities— and donated them to Bernie’s Book Bank in Lake Bluff for his Eagle Scout service project in the fall of 2019, even though he hadn’t had a sliver of carpentry experience before starting the task. Who wouldn’t want to follow an articulate, fearless leader like Clemmensen? “Andrew,” Dell says, “does such a good job of keeping our athletes connected. He has enthusiasm for uniting the team. He’s an upbeat guy, super personable and inclusive, and incredibly hardworking. Andrew has matured so much in the last couple of years. I’ve noticed even more dedication from him, as a swimmer and as a leader, with COVID-19 putting our season on hold.” Leading workouts via Google meetings has not always been smooth sailing for Clemmensen and his fellow captains, but Clemmensen owns the patience and resilience to make those virtual gatherings productive ones. And, under the direction of Clemmensen and several of his teammates, the Scouts designed a workout regimen to help generate funds on December 17 for the annual Hour of Power Relay event, which honors the late Ted Mullin and raises funds and awareness for rare pediatric cancers: Mullin, a Winnetkan, died from sarcoma in 2006 while attending Carleton College in Minnesota. “Technology can be a little spotty when our team works out,” says Clemmensen, a National Honor Society member, who is thinking of pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering in college. “It’s definitely challenging at times. We’re figuring things out, though, doing all we can to make sure we’re ready whenever we’re allowed to compete again.”
THE SPORTING LIFE At the North Suburban Conference boys swimming and diving meet in his junior season, Clemmensen, a breaststroker and freestyler, collaborated with a trio of teammates to earn a top-six medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The unit placed better than its seed time had projected, with Clemmensen clocking a personal-best split as the relay’s third leg. It marked the pinnacle of Clemmensen’s athletic career, to date. “High fives all around,” recalls the 5-foot-11, 150-pound Clemmensen, who also competes in water polo and scored a goal in the Scouts’ lone varsity game—a victory—last spring, before concerns about the pandemic scrubbed the rest of the season. “The hard work, it all paid off for us on the day of the conference meet. So much of that success had to do with our coach. Cindy pushed us, encouraged us, supported us. She’s a ‘Yes, you can’ coach, plus a coach who sees the best in all of her athletes every season.” Clemmensen saw 400 nailheads and hammered them all for his Eagle Scout project, sometimes toiling away with up to five others in his family’s garage until 10 p.m., and developing preparation, leadership, and woodworking skills along the way.

“You had to have an idea of what you wanted to do each day and then strive to complete it,” says Clemmensen, whose father, Chris, swam at Downers Grove North High School, and whose mother, Beth, competed in track and field at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn. “My dad helped me, along with my Eagle Scout coach, Jim Mordini. My older brother, Connor (a business major at the University of Michigan), has also been an influence in my life. He was a Boy Scout and a swimmer and a water polo player. I followed in his positive footsteps.” Clemmensen first set foot in a Lake Forest Recreation Center karate class at age 4 and earned his black belt in 2019. S WITH OTHER SPECIALTIES within the medical field, consolidation has had a profound impact on vascular and vein treatment. Practices are gobbled up by health care conglomerates, often leading to depersonalized service and a focus on profits over patients. New patients who visit Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists will find it more like a visit to the family doctor, especially if the family doctor is a top specialist in her field. “We are a specialty practice that has been around for years, and we take a very personalized approach. I evaluate and treat every single patient,” says Dr. Susanne Woloson, who formed Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists. “I call every single patient with their ultrasound results on the day of their test.” A focus on customized care is one reason Northwest Vascular is the top vein care practice in Illinois. Ninety percent of Northwest’s procedures are deemed medically necessary and covered by insurance. “All of our treatments are minimally invasive and performed in an office setting,” Dr. Woloson says. “We treat the patient’s symptoms and also provide a good visual result. There is no down time and patients come in for their followup already feeling better.”

OMETIMES A little push is all you need. Chris Fisher moved to Lake Forest when he was in the eighth grade. And in those early teenage years, he was lucky enough to cross paths with Lesley Gimbel a few times. But it wasn’t until a month before his junior prom at Lake Forest High School that his close friend Chris Jasper gave him the nudge to ask Lesley out. “Our first date was dinner at Rocky Rococo’s. We then went to see the movie Rain Man and Ben & Jerry’s for dessert,” Chris recalls. And as the story goes, Chris’ charm and well-planned evening sealed the deal for prom. After a courtship that spanned the rest of high school and their college years, with hours spent driving around town visiting each other at work at either Knollwood or The Lake Forest Club, or living large buying snacks at the “Mini Mart,” Chris and Lesley each knew they had found “the one.” Then one summer, after both Chris and Lesley had graduated from college and found jobs and roommates in Chicago—they traveled to Vermont. “Chris’s family, originally from Vermont, returned there each summer for the annual Fisher Family Reunion. It was important to his parents that their chil-
dren spend time together in that part of the country,” Lesley says. “I started joining in on that fun when I was 16.” That is why Chris decided Vermont would be the perfect place to propose. “Our families were in on the plan,” says Chris. “I took Lesley out for a bike ride on Stowe’s mountain path, asked her to marry me, and she said ‘yes.’ Then back at the Mountain Road Resort, my parents had arranged a party for us.” But the biggest surprise was yet come. “When my parents walked in the door,” says Lesley, “I was totally surprised. I just couldn’t believe it. Chris had planned ahead of time for them to be there to celebrate with us. Their presence made the moment complete.” Chris and Lesley were married on July 26, 1997, at The Standard Club in Chicago. “It was all we had hoped our wedding would be, surrounded by our families and closest friends.” After spending their newlywed years in Lincoln Park, the Fishers felt they “had done the Chicago thing” and were looking forward to a little quieter place to start their family. “To be honest, Lake Forest wasn’t even on our radar when we were looking to buy a house in the suburbs,” says Chris. “We loved it, but in some way, it didn’t seem possible that we could actually raise our family there.” But Chris and Lesley found their perfect first home in the then-new Conway Farms development FO REST & BLUFF 57

in Lake Forest, where their twin boys Jake and Danny were born. “We were hooked,” says Chris. “Once we were here, there was nowhere else we wanted to be. I had moved around a bit when I was a kid and I really wanted our children to have just one place to call home. I love that it’s Lake Forest.” In 2002, the young family moved to the Everett school neighborhood, where Molly was born. After enjoying a decade there, the Fishers moved to their current home, to be closer to town and Lake Forest High School. Although Lake Forest has all the comfortable and familiar feels to the Fishers, there is still so much that is fresh and new to them. “It’s not at all like we’re reliving our childhoods with our kids,” says Lesley. “Even though my life was very full when I was growing up here, there’s just so much more available to them than we had. The programming is incredible—NVA, the Lake Forest Recreation Center, LFBA Baseball—so much! And our
family has really found a special place at the Community Church.” While Chris and Lesley have devoted countless volunteer hours on the APT, District 67 School Board, Allendale, LFBA, Beacon Place, and Reading Power—the Boosters Club at Lake Forest High School was the first board the two joined together. “Working with Chris on the Boosters board was such a fun experience for us,” says Lesley, noting that a number of their high school friends are on the board with them (including Liz Jasper, wife of the famous Chris Jasper who gave Chris the all-important nudge to ask Lesley out). “There is just so much talent that people give freely. I’m often in awe of the sheer amount of time people are willing to offer so selflessly and with such focus to help others.” While it remains to be seen whether the Fishers’ story will continue on with their children someday setting down roots of their own in Lake Forest, Lesley and Chris are enjoying witnessing their individual journeys take shape as they each attend college in the Midwest. “Lake Forest is a very special place to raise a family,” Chris adds. “We have so appreciated seeing Danny, Jake, and Molly embrace everything Lake Forest has to offer. Their connection with the community has been more than we could have hoped for. It’s exciting to walk around town and see the next generation of young families who have moved to Lake Forest. They have so much to look forward to.”

LTHOUGH THEY currently reside in the city, it is clear that Missy and Johnny Poth’s hearts are firmly rooted in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. That is, after all, where their romance began. And also where Missy’s business, M on the Square, is based. But more on that in a moment. Missy and Johnny met second semester, senior year at Lake Forest High School, just making it under the wire for them to officially qualify as high school sweethearts. Missy grew up in Lake Bluff starting at age 6 and Johnny moved to Lake Forest in kindergarten. It is actually surprising that they had not met prior to a mutual friend introducing them in study hall. They quickly realized they had many mutual friends and, “we were instantly enamored with each other,” Johnny says. “The rest is history.” “We went to senior prom together,” Missy adds. But they did head off in different directions for college, Missy to Auburn University in Alabama and Johnny to Miami of Ohio. During their four years of college, the couple was able to achieve what many have failed to accomplish—they actually made their long-distance romance work. Miss and Johnny both knew they had found someone special. “In addition to lots of texting, calling, and Facetiming, “it was a little bit of planes, trains, and automobiles,” Missy laughs. Missy is quick to acknowledge that the success of the business would not be possible without the support and help from her family, especially her husband Johnny and her parents, Lisa and Jack Crowe. Although Johnny has his own career in private equity, he often helps out at the store, especially during those busy times, like Christmas. “It’s a family affair,” Missy says. “I want it to be a place that my kids come to after school, to work, take out the garbage and wash buckets. “We love the community. T
HERE IS A SINCERITY and a tenderness in the voice of Annie McAveeney, as if you can feel her giving heart within the sound of each of her thoughtful words. But when she speaks of the children that have been helped, thanks to the work of her family’s Fill a Heart 4 Kids foundation, that sincere and tender voice cannot help but fill any room with an abundance of love. Take, for example, the story she tells of a little boy. Despite his young age, his life story had already been filled with far too much pain and abuse. But there he was, sitting in his room in a group home with more kids with similar stories to his, just trying to find a way to keep going amidst a world of uncertainty. “Every single child that we help receives a sweet handmade card from our wonderful volunteers, so for some of the kids
in our program, their bedrooms are lined with our cards, resembling wallpaper in a way,” remembers McAveeney, who serves as co-founder for the nonprofit. “I was at foster group home doing an assessment to see what updates we could help make, and I walked by his room, and I saw the first card my daughter and I made, taped to his wall. I gasped and said, ‘that’s our card.’” McAveeney struggles to keep her composure over the mere recollection. “He said to me, ‘every morning I wake up, it’s the first thing I see, and I know there is a mom out there who loves me.” It is a moment that she will not forget, and a moment made possible through the loving actions of volunteers and donors who come together throughout the year to help fulfill the needs of over 1,300 children including the children living at Lydia Home in Chicago. “Fill a Heart 4 Kids is such a blessing to the children and staff at Lydia Home,” explains Lydia Home’s Director of Programs Jon Ebersole. “They create activities like painting benches and birdhouses, and they recently organized an elf parade complete with s’mores and a hot chocolate bar. They provide clothes, coats, and gifts but most importantly, they provide love. Led by Annie (McAveeney) and her tireless example, she and her volunteers show kindness and respect consistently, which is a healing balm to the children at Lydia Home who have been mistreated.” It is enough to make McAveeney blush. “I don’t view Fill a Heart 4 Kids as my family’s foundation, but as all of our foundation,” she says quietly. “This is our community’s charity. The Lake Forest and Lake Bluff community are treasures to us. We have built this together and we all should be immensely proud.” Granted, the ongoing pandemic has had a direct effect on the inner workings of the longtime foundation, as the needs within the community continue to grow as COVID-19 rages on. “We never tapped the brakes,” explains McAveeney, who began the foundation from her living room table back in

2008. “In fact, over the past year, we accelerated. Our doors have been open seven days a week. We continue to provide thousands of meals to homeless children some living in basements and garages and motels without kitchens. We partner with social workers and schools to give children educational resources, winter gear, Survival BacPacs™, PPE, necessities and dignity. We could not do our important work without our dedicated Board and our wonderful community.” Indeed, Fill a Heart 4 Kids made the recent holidays far happier for many, with the charitable organization creating a Santa’s Workshop within a donated pop-up space in Lake Forest’s Market Square shopping center in which families could come and fill stockings for the less fortunate. “None of this would have been possible without the caring owners of Market Square. Their heartfelt support made it possible for over 2,000 children to experience the joy of giving and or receiving. “We were booked seven days a week,” remembers McAveeney. “We had a waiting list of over 500 families that wanted to be a part of Project Elf. Families throughout the Chicagoland area, signed up for a 30 minute Elf experience and left knowing they helped children.” Of course, in year’s past, the Christmas lists of the children were filled with toys and gadgets. Yet, last year’s lists seemed to indicate that the situation for so many was far more dire.

“2020 was so different,” remembers McAveeney. “Our children asked for items such as food and food gift cards, toiletries and winter coats, and everyone seemed to be asking for blankets to keep them warm. You can’t put into words the needs of these children. It was heartbreaking.” While Market Square originally donated the space for the holidays, they have now extended a wonderful opportunity to Fill a Heart 4 Kids to operate at 270 Market Square through May of 2021, and in turn, the community can continue to turn out to help. “One of the greatest gifts that we can give Market Square and our community is to show how appreciative we are,” FO REST & BLUFF 65

McAveeney explains. “We want to help all of our children get through this difficult time, so we try to create as much happiness and magic and joy—not only for children who are in crisis that need us desperately, but for all of our children. It’s our way of saying thank you. When times are difficult, you still can do something beautiful, so life becomes joyful again.” In the coming months, Fill a Heart 4 Kids will continue to spread that joy not only during their well-known Project Valentine but also via endeavors such as “Project Hop,” in which Fill a Heart 4 Kids has a goal to fill over 3,000 Easter baskets for foster children living in group homes and for chil-
dren struggling with extreme poverty, and Project Awesome, where each child will be recognized for the effort her or she made during the recent school year. And yes, the need has never been greater. “Our board is laser focused on how we spend our resources,” says McAveeney. “We constantly have social workers and teachers walking into our Market Square location, informing us of more children who need our help. We hand deliver 85 percent of our weekly donations, which is a lot of work for our dedicated Board and volunteer Charlie Wilson, but we want to make absolutely sure all eyes are on our donations, and that they are going directly to the children.” But McAveeney admits that she cannot do it alone. And luckily, she never has. “Our Board, caring volunteers and donors come in from everywhere, from Libertyville, Oak Brook to Chicago to Wilmette to help, along with the amazing people in our own community,” says McAveeney. “They come here and comment on how charming, vibrant, and beautiful our town is. One person recently said that they felt like they were ‘wrapped in love’ every time they came here and I couldn’t agree more. I feel the exact same way … and I know our kids do too.”

by rhinoplasty are a hump on the bridge, a bulbous tip, and a nose that is too large when compared to other facial features. Regardless of the flaws fixed, the goal is to achieve a natural-looking outcome. The surgery itself is usually done on an outpatient basis under IV sedation. The techniques vary but consist of filing down excess bone, reducing excess cartilage, and adding additional cartilage or bone when needed. Each case is unique and millimeters count. Most patients have a splint in place for one week, and there is some bruising and swelling, but it is usually minimal. Most noses look good at the end of one week, yet it can take nine months to one year for every last bit of swelling to subside, as well as for the skin to shrink to the smaller structure. To balance out the profile, often some modification of the jawline or chin is done. If the chin is too small, a mini incision is made under the chin or through the mouth. A pocket is created over the chin and an implant is inserted. The implant is made out of solid silicone and feels like the underlying bone. If the chin is too prominent, then the chin can be filed down from inside the mouth. If the neck is poorly defined, then liposuction can be done at the same time to give greater definition. Rhinoplasty is probably one of the most challenging procedures plastic surgeons perform, both technically and aesthetically. It is also one of the most gratifying. It has the potential to significantly enhance one’s appearance and give the self-confidence to better enjoy his or her life.

AOLO VENINI, a Milanese lawyer and an immensely talented designer and visionary, founded his glassware company on the island of Murano in 1921 with Giacomo Cappellin, a Venetian antique dealer. The partnership split, but Venini set up shop on his own in 1925, and her one of the few Italian manufacturers of applied art invited to exhibit at the landmark 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. Venini & Co—which still exists today—is credited with reviving Italy’s highend glass industry, most notably during the 1930s. Paolo Venini brought modernist, forward thinking designers to his workshops in Murano where he paired them with the island’s skilled artisans, revolutionizing glass design. Iconic and enduring designs were created that continue to be collected today, including the Fazzoletto (handkerchief ) vase seen above. Designed in partnership with the company’s artistic director Fulvio Bianconi in 1948, the Fazzoletto brings to mind a floating, falling handkerchief. Known as one of Venini & Co’s most popular designs, it has been made in a wide range of colors using various techniques. This small pink and white Fazoletto vase is made in zanfirico glass, an Italian style of cane decoration referred to as filigrana (filigree). The piece, manufactured between1949 and 1950, is signed “Venini Murano Italia” and has an original full paper label.
