At Rush Concierge Medicine, we take your health care personally.
We understand that your health and well-being affect every aspect of your life. We will work with you to prioritize your health by focusing on your wellness goals. Whether you want to stay active, better manage a chronic condition, or seek a more personalized health care experience, we are by your side. Rush Concierge Medicine is a membership-based primary care practice that focuses on highly personalized, accessible care. Our clinic is conveniently located in downtown Hinsdale.
As a member, you’ll have a personal physician and nurse navigator as your partners in every aspect of your health. Your team is always a simple call, email or text away — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With same- or next-day appointments available, they’ll prioritize your concerns quickly.
“With concierge medicine, you have access to your doctor and nurse any time, and we really serve as your quarterback in care,” says Luan Elezi, MD, family medicine physician with Rush Concierge Medicine. “Our goal is to help you open up and discuss your health concerns so we can establish an open relationship and true partnership.”
Better Access, More Time
To build this partnership, Rush Concierge Medicine is tackling two of the biggest challenges in health care: difficulty accessing care and not having enough time with your doctor.
“Our patients are in the office for 90 minutes to two hours for their comprehensive physical,” says Marie Runyan, RN, BSN, concierge nurse navigator. “Many concerns come out when you have more time together, so that helps us really get to know you.”
The goal of breaking down these time and access barriers is to foster a strong partnership between you and your care team — which can ultimately help improve your overall health and wellness.
“Concierge medicine is more personalized and convenient,” Runyan says. “For example, if you wake up not feeling well, we’ll get you in right away. You’ll see your physician who knows you, your health history, your medications and your background.
Concierge medicine also makes it easier to manage the complexities of health care. “We will help you navigate everything from annual wellness exams to chronic illnesses and beyond,” Runyan says. “Knowing we’re there as your partner takes the pressure off of you to juggle it all.”
Investing In Your Health
A lot of people find their way to concierge medicine when they are ready and able to invest in their health. “Our goal is to optimize your health and focus on prevention so we can help you be more proactive with your health rather than reactive,” says Elezi.
To do this, Rush Concierge Medicine provides recommended screening and prevention testing specific to your needs. Your care team will work with you to determine if a deeper dive into different aspects of your health would be helpful based on your history and risk factors.
“Many of our patients are prioritizing their health, and they come to us looking for ways to prolong their life through prevention,” Elezi says. “By offering much more comprehensive testing, we can do more proactive disease prevention because we have more data to guide it.”
Concierge medicine can also be a game changer if you’re managing chronic conditions. Your concierge medicine team will help you coordinate appointments with your specialists and navigate the system, ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks.
“When you’re seeing five different specialists, there’s so much information, and there can be so much disconnect between providers,” Elezi says. “We know exactly who you see, all your medications, all your concerns, and all your appointments. That allows us to collaborate with your specialists, advocate for you and make sure everyone is on the same page.”

If you’re interested in becoming a member of Rush Concierge Medicine, you can schedule a complimentary meet-and-greet with the concierge medicine team to get a feel for the practice and providers.

MOLLY PAINTER LUCHT
grew up in central Indiana, where her dad was an attorney, and her mom was a businesswoman. Molly’s dad instilled her competitive spirit, refined in sports, with basketball, tennis, and volleyball always in focus. Her mom taught her to strive to be the best version of herself. While Molly’s parents divorced when she was five, they modeled how to put their kids first despite challenges.
She set off to undergrad at Miami of Ohio, where she led various campus organizations, including the group responsible for planning campus activities on the beautiful, thriving campus, and was very involved with the alumni association.
After MU, she joined Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, then quickly moved to Chicago to follow her true passion in healthcare by working for Johnson & Johnson. During a nearly decade-long career at J&J, Molly thrived through a period of increasing responsibility while earning her MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business. She found her calling in products that help diagnose rare diseases and has launched more than 12 products globally. Alongside building her career, she married and had two children, Izzy and Gabe.
Molly’s next chapter is a lesson in what she calls, “It’s not what happens to us, but how we handle it.” After 10 years of marriage and moving from Chicago to Glen Ellyn, she divorced and moved back to Lincoln Park with her two kids. She loved this time, and it’s when she met her now-husband, Nate, on a first date at Topo Gigio in Chicago. Fast forward two years: Nate asked, “Would you move to Hinsdale?” She initially gave him a side-eye as they were de-boarding a plane, but that quickly turned into a resounding "YES!" While she didn’t know much about Hinsdale, she knew she was in love and that they’d make a great team blending their families. Nate proposed in their kitchen, and they married at home in 2022.
They have five kids between them, aged 17, 15, 15, 13, and 12 and work hard to be the best parents. “Our family is strong, and, despite the challenges, we’ve grown closer and stronger,” she says.
“What I’m most proud of are my relationships. I draw strength from my family—my husband, kids, and step kids—and from my friends, old and new. I’m truly honored to be part of the Hinsdale community and thankful for all the women here. They have welcomed me with open arms, and I feel it!”

COUNTRY VS. TOWN
Do you have a mantra? Purpose, Passion, Heart: Your core purpose is where your talents and values intersect. I’m fortunate to have found this in my life. I strive to live every day around my core purpose—helping others grow and advocating for those in need, while creating value. That’s where my passion comes in. I love advocating and achieving results, and I have a strong desire to win. To me, it's not about winning, but the will to win. My heart is huge, and sometimes it gets in the way. I love deeply, and when my stepdad, Clif, was passing away, he told me never to lose my “heart power.” There are days I wish I could, but it’s impossible. It’s just who I am. On your reading stack? The New Yorker, The Boundary Boss and I re-read Leadership from the Inside Out by Kevin Cashman almost every year. The Anxious Generation is a must-read for parents, as it explores how devices are shaping our kids' lives. Podcast? I'm a Mel Robbins podcast addict and just listened to The Let Them Theory What organizations do you support? I’m on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chicago, a cause close to my heart since I mentored Gabby for over 10 years. I also serve on the board of the Infant Welfare Society of Hinsdale, which raises funds for the Angel Harvey Center in Logan Square. This organization, founded over 100 years ago, has evolved into a comprehensive healthcare provider serving over 5,000 children. I’ve been involved with Autism Speaks, the Joffrey Women’s Board, and the Junior League of Chicago. I’m also thrilled to support my friends’ causes, such as Together at Peace, HJWC, and Chicago Lighthouse. Additionally, I host fundraising parties for the Hinsdale Historical Society’s Kitchen Walk with my friend Natalie. Currently, I’m leading the HMS PTO, which has been a rewarding experience seeing how the school operates and how well the community functions together. What’s your signature entertaining style? I think about how I want my guests to feel based on the occasion. 1) Formal Sit-Down Dinner: I love
creating a space for strong conversations, ending the evening with a dance party. The tablescapes are beautiful thanks to Gathered Table, and Chef Beau creates the perfect menu, with Nate selecting the wine, 2) A Party with Something to Do: For my daughter’s 14th birthday, I organized a scavenger hunt around Hinsdale, which kept the kids engaged. We’ve also had gingerbread-making contests full of laughter 3) A Family Affair: We love hosting homecoming parties with activities for all ages. And we enjoy having a one-man band, like Jacob Sweet from Underwater People, who adds a special touch. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? Making my bed every day is something my mom taught me—and it’s amazing how a simple act can set the tone for the day. Even if I accomplish nothing else, at least my bed is made with crisp sheets! Music you love? Nate’s college mix is a favorite, and I’m also known for belting out Baby Got Back at karaoke. My car is the “Taylor Car,” as I know every song in her Eras setlist by heart. Favorite travel spots? Capri (best honeymoon spot), the Swiss Alps, Santa Barbara, I also love the sunrise on Lake Wawsee in Indiana.
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
What’s your go-to outfit? My favorite outfit is a T-shirt from Anthropologie with Rag & Bone jeggings and my 10-year-old Golden Goose sneakers (price per wear 10 cents!). Sometimes I throw on a jean jacket. My two favorite necklaces are a retro Lana Luck necklace, and one Nate gave me with letters for each child’s name (LEIGA) made by Imperfect Grace from a Sweet William trunk show. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? I never take off my wedding ring or my mom’s ring—a stone my grandfather obtained during WW2 and had made for her when he was a physician in India. It reminds me of her strength and guidance. I also can’t leave without my Whistle App to track our dog Kelly, who’s always on the move! Where do they know you by name? The Hinsdale Middle School front desk, Vistro Prime, where we kicked off our wedding weekend, Zazu, and CorePower, where I love sculpting classes with Gina and Jackie, and Hot Power Fusion classes with Craig and Polly. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for Hinsdale, what would you say? "Come for the schools, stay for the amazing neighbors!" Will you share your favorite life hacks? Snappr Photo App for vacation photos; Walmart Plus for easy shopping;
Last Chance for perfect stocking stuffers; Fiverr App for affordable admin and creative work; A Book and a Chai for virtual book clubs; Rachel J Styling to refresh your wardrobe without buying new clothes; Minted for managing my address book and personal CRM What’s in your bag? Noise Canceling earbuds for my son, NARS Star Woman Lip color, sunglasses, Le Labo LYS 41, Super Goop Glow Stick, and a black Sharpie. Best quick bite or hidden gem?

Why Revising Your Estate Plan During Divorce is Crucial
WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP
STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
As a divorce attorney, I’ve seen firsthand how critical estate planning is during and after the divorce process. The truth is, no one wants to think about their own mortality, especially during the emotional upheaval of a divorce. But failing to update or create an estate plan can lead to devastating consequences for your loved ones, especially children.
Recently, one of our clients passed away unexpectedly in the middle of their divorce. Unfortunately, she hadn’t updated her will or powers of attorney. Her estranged spouse, still legally married, inherited everything—money, assets, even control over medical and legal decisions before her death. This wasn’t the outcome she wanted, and her surviving family was left with no legal recourse. Even the assets that went to the children were controlled by the estranged spouse.
This heartbreaking situation serves as a stark reminder: your estate plan is just as important as dividing assets and creating parenting plans. In Illinois, revising your will, and creating or updating powers of attorney for health care and property, is not only wise but essential to protect your wishes.
WHY ACT NOW?
In Illinois, if you pass away without a will while your divorce is pending, your estranged spouse will inherit a significant portion of your estate under the state’s intestacy laws. Even after your divorce is finalized, certain trust provisions may remain in effect if not proactively addressed.
• A Will Protects Your Intentions: While Illinois law (755 ILCS 5/2-8) allows an ex-spouse to be removed as a beneficiary automatically after a divorce is finalized, the same protections don’t apply during the divorce process. Without an updated will, your spouse will inherit under default laws.
• Powers of Attorney Safeguard Your Decisions: Powers of attorney for both health care and property allow you to designate someone you trust to make decisions for you if you’re unable to do so. If these documents haven’t been updated, your estranged spouse could still have the authority to make medical and financial decisions on your behalf.
J. Riewer
CAN A SPOUSE CHALLENGE A WILL?
Under Illinois law, a spouse has the right to challenge a will by renouncing it and claiming their elective share, which is typically one-third of the estate if there are children, or one-half if there are none. While this might seem like a complication, having a will still provides clarity and limits the spouse's ability to claim more than the statutory share. Without a will, the entire estate could pass to the spouse under intestacy laws, leaving all of your assets to the spouse you are trying to divorce, instead of your children or other family members.
WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE?
If you’re going through a divorce, here’s what you need to do to protect your estate and ensure your wishes are honored:
1. Draf t or Revise Your Will: Work with an attorney to ensure your assets go to the right people, even during the divorce process.
2. Update Powers of Attorney: Name someone you trust to handle medical and financial decisions for you.
3. Review Beneficiary Designations: These are separate from your will and govern who inherits retirement accounts, life insurance, and other payable-on-death accounts.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Revising or creating an estate plan during a divorce isn’t just about money—it’s about ensuring that the people you care about are taken care of according to your wishes. Without a plan, the law will decide for you, and those decisions might not align with what you would have wanted.
As painful as it might feel to think about, taking these steps is a way to protect the future of your loved ones. Don’t leave your estate to chance. Consult with an experienced family law or estate planning attorney to make sure everything is in order.
Strategic Divorce is here to guide you through every aspect of your divorce, including ensuring your estate plan reflects your new reality and protects your family. Contact us to protect your rights and your legacy.

Tablescapes: Bellissima! Set to Transport Guests to the Enchanting Landscapes of Italy
WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
PRODUCED BY THERESA DEMARIA / STYLING BY KRISTEN LOPEZ
Longtime Hinsdale resident Lauren Ferrara Houder has always loved Italy.
“My family came here from Italy in 1908 and started a bakery,” Houder tells Hinsdale Living of the old Italian bakery that is still thriving on Taylor Street in downtown Chicago. “Continuing Italian traditions in our lives is important to us. Our family still has Sunday dinner every week as a family and remember those who are not with us.”
So, when the Tablescapes Event Chair of the Hinsdale Chapter of IWS Family Health (the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago) began to brainstorm ideas for the theme that would ultimately drive this year’s event, it’s no surprise that her thought turned to her Italian heritage.
“Italy is a melting pot of many different cultures and sceneries,” says Houder, who has played a crucial part in the success of the Hinsdale Infant Welfare since 2022. “Each town is different in their own way, which makes it so unique. The beauty of the coast is one of our many highlights, but the small towns and regions are what make Italy so beautiful and never to be forgotten.”
Certainly, it is this beauty that will be displayed on the tables of the highly anticipated annual fundraising event Tablescapes: Bellissima! on Sunday, March 23 at the Marriott Southwest Burr Ridge.
“We are thrilled to bring a taste of Italy to this year’s Bellissima event,” shares Laura Preusser, Tablescapes Benefit Chair. “Attendees can look forward to exciting live and silent auctions, stunning tablescape designs that embody our namesake theme, live music, and an expanded selection of boutique vendors. It’s going to be an unforgettable day filled with Italian-inspired charm and community.”
“Tablescapes is a celebration of our community coming together to support a vital cause,” adds Candace Mueller, President of the Hinsdale Chapter of Infant Welfare Society. “The dollars we raise directly benefit the Angel Harvey Family Health Center, ensuring that underserved families across Chicago have access to the critical healthcare they need. It’s an inspiring reminder of the impact we can make when we work together.”
This impact has the chance to become even greater than ever this year, as the longstanding event is set to feature a number
of new events, including the chance for VIP attendees to take advantage of the new Early Access Sip & Shop presented by The Julie Sutton Group that will allow for a ‘first look’ at nearly two dozen local, premiere boutiques, while enjoying champagne and lite bites, along with vitamin B boosts compliments of Initium IV Therapy and shopping bag valet. General admission will follow at noon, where guests will partake in the traditional bidding on creatively curated tablescapes and vignettes such as “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “To Rome with Love,” each paired with unique experiences such as wine tastings, Italian chef dinners and cellar tours.
“Our tablescapes this year are truly special, as they include both experiences and artistic vignettes inspired by iconic Italian movies. Our Junior Board played a crucial role in designing the La Dolce Vita tablescape and will also be on hand working with us on a multitude of tasks, including selling raffle tickets and even serving gelato. But I’m particularly excited about our new after party, with music and festive cocktails,” adds Lindsay Oosterbaan, Tablescape Design Committee Chair.
Certainly, Tablescapes continues to be an event possible due to the hard work of so many. “We are so blessed and lucky and I'm grateful for this team of 77 women strong that make up HIWS,” concludes Mueller. “We have about 39 new members this year, and so I think people really enjoy the activities that we do all throughout the year. I think that's what brings us together as a community.”
But it’s the community of families served by the Angel Harvey Family Health Center that will forever remain in the hearts of each and every member of HIWS.
“We all care deeply about families and recognize the gap in funding for the resources they need. Knowing that we're helping to close that gap is a feeling that can’t be described,” concludes Mueller. “When you go to the center and you visit it, you get to see all of the quality healthcare that people now have access to that they didn't before.”

Longtime Hinsdale resident Natalie Saegesser adores the place her and her husband, three children and two dogs get to call home.
“We love this house,” Saegesser tells Hinsdale Living of her sprawling 8,500 square foot home located in the heart of Hinsdale. “It has incredible character, and we love the location.”
But when the Saegesser family bought the 1894 house in 2020, they quickly realized that some changes had to be made.
“We knew we wanted to continue to raise our kids in this house,” remembers Saegesser, who serves as Director of Sales at PepsiCo.
“But we knew in order to do that for the next 20 years, there were some updates we needed to make overall.”
And that’s when the massive renovations began.
“I think we really made an effort to honor the historic nature of the house while adding some modern details to the space,” explains Saegesser of the renovations that ultimately included a partial dig and renovation of the basement, full gut renovation of our kitchen, addition of a 2nd floor bedroom and bathroom, and the renovation of a screened-in porch to a sunroom.
“The project became bigger in scope with every passing day,” explains Saegesser of the 16-month renovation completed at the end of 2024. “We started to dream a little bigger.”
It’s the result of those dreams and many others that will be on display during the 25th annual Hinsdale Historical Society Kitchen Walk taking place on May 9 at the Hinsdale Golf Club. “There's always so much joy in participating in the kitchen walk,” reflects Saegesser, whose home will be one of the six beautiful homes featured as part of the event. “I feel strongly that people need to see the beauty and what can be done in an old house. You find beauty in the imperfections of an old house. That's what gives it its charm and its character.”
inspiration for things that you might do in your own home or potentially in an older house.”
The Hinsdale Historical Society Luncheon, being held March 12th at the Hinsdale Golf Club, acts as the kickoff to the annual Kitchen Walk.
“The goal of the luncheon over the past few years, in my view, has been to highlight designers and styles that promote preservation,” explains Hope Lloyd Brown, a longtime Hinsdale Historical Society trustee who is chairing this year’s event alongside fellow Hinsdale Historical Society members Alicia O’Brien, Courtney Casey, Diane Crites and Katie Isadore. “It's basically a day where people that enjoy design and preservation can get together and get dressed up. It’s one of the first events of spring coming out of the winter, so it’s nice to get dressed up.”
“There's nothing better than getting together with girlfriends and going to see beautiful houses......”
Infusing the event with even more excitement is the event’s Palm Royale theme. “Everything is going to follow that 1960’s sort of style and design sensibility of fashions and interiors and fabrics and entertaining,” explains Brown. “We want to bring back that sense of entertaining in the home.”
And for Saegesser, entertaining in this particular home has been a longstanding tradition. “Every so often, people that realize that we live in this house share with us that they used to play cards and have drinks on the porch of this house years and years ago,” she remarks. “They have experiences of this house that they share with me. Being able to share in some of those experiences? There is just nothing like it.”
But perhaps more importantly is the fact that the traditionally sold-out Kitchen Walk Luncheon helps raise money for a multitude of preservation efforts throughout the year for the Hinsdale Historical Society.
It's these little pieces of charm and character that has long attracted sold out crowds to the Kitchen Walk, undoubtedly one of the most anticipated events on Hinsdale’s already impressive social calendar.
“There's nothing better than getting together with girlfriends and going to see beautiful houses in the community that we drive past every day, but don't really know what they look like in the inside,” says Saegesser. “You really get to take with you a lot of
“Funds raised from our annual Kitchen Walk luncheon and Kitchen Walk event enable the Historical Society to maintain its three buildings - the Hinsdale History Museum, Immanuel Hall and the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio at KLM - as well as to ensure the society continues to offer its many public programs and archival services,” explains Hinsdale Historical Society President Walker Rediehs. “A pivotal fundraising priority continues to focus on restoring the aging Zook Home and Studio to ensure that future generations not only enjoy this historic building but that it serves as a community gathering place for all.”

The Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club radiates as it celebrates its 75th anniversary. This March, HJWC invites guests to celebrate its diamond year by stepping back in time and reveling in the allure of Old Hollywood glamour with the dazzling theme: Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.
Each year, the HJWC Benefit is a celebration to support the club’s mission of championing local charities and scholarships. With over $5.1 million raised to date, the club’s efforts uplift women and children across Chicagoland, empower organizations, create vital educational opportunities, and reinforce the club’s commitment to community advocacy and meaningful impact.
This past 2023-2024 club year has been a shining testament to the club’s commitment to community impact. HJWC awarded $15,000 in scholarships to four exceptional local students pursuing higher education—investing in their futures and the next generation of leaders and innovators. Members also hosted two essential drives, collecting diapers and feminine hygiene products for families in need. The club's fall fashion show, “Leather and Lace,” raised funds to support scholarships for local young women and grants for area charities. Additionally, HJWC members brought holiday cheer by purchasing and wrapping 288 gifts for 84 families. This year also saw HJWC raise over $301,000, making a lasting difference in countless lives and showcasing the club's dedication to local communities.
In total, members dedicated 550 volunteer hours to 17 nonprofit organizations, supporting food banks, shelters, and local events. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of our executive board, committee chairs, members, and generous sponsors, we’ve made an incredible mark that will be felt for years to come,” says Caitlin Jecklin, managing chair. HJWC is excited to keep traditions alive and make an even bigger impact in the coming year.
To toast its success and the club’s diamond year, HJWC promises the benefit gala will be as sparkling as its theme.
Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend will be held at The Dalcy in the West Loop and will have a red carpet entrance to set the tone for a night of Old Hollywood luster. It will also feature a VIP Walk of Fame complete with photo ops, a silent auction with luxurious prizes, a paddle-raise live auction, delectable appetizers, live entertainment, and a DJ to dance the night away.
This year’s planning process was a natural extension of the committee’s shared vision. “It’s been a seamless, rewarding experience blending creative expression with a cause we deeply believe in,” says Liz Ewing, sponsorship chair. “This milestone deserves nothing short of a show-stopping celebration, and we’ve brought together our diverse talents and networks to make it sparkle.”
Jecklin, an influencer with Once Upon a Dollhouse and a seasoned social media consultant, brings a creative edge,
while Christina Angelos, an intuitive abstract artist and digital educator at Christina Angelos Studios, adds artistic flair and expertise. Ewing, leading sponsorship efforts, has successfully secured new partnerships that have been invaluable to the event's success. Together, their unique perspectives have played a key role in shaping the benefit gala.
“We’re particularly thrilled about this year’s first live auction, where guests can raise their paddles for once-in-alifetime vacations and exquisite diamond jewelry donated by our generous sponsors,” says Ewing.
“Your winning bid isn’t just about scoring something spectacular,” says Angelos. “Not only are you directly impacting the lives of so many deserving individuals, but the cherry on top is it's also a tax write-off and the perfect way to indulge while supporting a great cause. We can’t wait to see the energy and excitement this new addition brings to the night!”
Tiffany Adams and Kristen Ori are this year’s auction chairs who continue to connect with local businesses and touch base with members for must-have items to help raise money for HJWC’s cause. “They are solely in charge of putting together our amazing silent auction and facilitating our live paddle raise at the benefit gala,” says Ewing. “They are both the perfect candidates for this position, and they have a kind and caring attitude toward all our members.”
Christine Gebauer, club secretary, plays a dual role as the benefit’s PR chair. “She has honed the club’s tone of voice on social media to represent an inclusive environment that puts plenty of fun in fundraising,” says Jecklin. “With so much social media expertise on our team, we’re creating top-tier content that connects with our desired demographic making it a win-win for everyone involved.”
This generosity has created a ripple effect that will continue to shape lives for many years. “We are so incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and so grateful for each and every person who played a part in this journey,” says Jecklin. “Lauren Markham is an exceptional president. She’s fully trusted our talented committee and offers sage advice stepping in when needed.”
For attire inspiration for the benefit, look no further than the timeless glamour of Old Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sammy Davis Jr.—this style perfectly embodies the opulence and allure of the event. "We can’t wait to see everyone’s interpretations!" says Angelos.
For 75 years, the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club has been dedicated to enriching the lives of its members, their families, and local communities. Its mission is to provide a network of resources and opportunities while serving as a leader in volunteerism and philanthropy.

The ultimate day of fashion and compassion helps families in need find the bridge to a better future

In 1988, the idea to provide housing and intensive life-skills mentoring to families facing homelessness was met with a degree of skepticism.
Many doubted that two businessmen could change how the community responded to and served families experiencing homelessness.
But Mark Milligan and Bob Wahlgren created a visionary model, by not only renting an apartment for a family in need but also joining each family with a volunteer mentor and professional case manager. This powerful strategy launched Bridge Communities, which has changed the lives of thousands.
Bridge has grown and expanded its services during the past three decades, but the commitment to creating change in the lives of families experiencing homelessness has never wavered.
Ann wears a dress by Lulu Studio from Neiman Marcus in a friend's lovingly restored mid-century Hinsdale home.
Bridge Communities has become a regional and national leader in transitional housing, as well as the surrounding issues that lead to homelessness, such as lack of affordable housing and well-paid labor jobs. Bridge Communities has counseled many organizations on establishing a transitional housing program based on this innovative model.
Prior to Ann Pitcher’s term on the Board of Directors, she and her husband served as mentors to two different Bridge Communities families. She calls the experience, “The best, hardest thing we’ve ever done.” The weekly meetings included going over expenses, making a budget, and coaching these working mothers on earning more money through promotions or finding a new job.
“That’s really the core difference with Bridge Communities. Lots of organizations can raise money by throwing big events but the relationship between the mentors and the clients is every week and that accountability is what makes the clients successful,” she says.
As big events go, though, this one is a winner.
“What’s not to like about an afternoon of day drinking, being with your friends, lunch, and a fashion show?” Ann asks.
Entertainment will include two talented young women singing duets from Wicked and the awarding of prizes for best shoes, boots, and other fabulous footwear. The winners will walk the runway so everyone can admire their good taste.
A graduate of Bridge Communities will speak, sharing her experience from the heart.
The room is full of women and moms listening to a fellow mother much like them who has lost her home, often to domestic violence. Ann says, “These women are employed and have at least one child. They never expected to find themselves in this situation, but now they must find their way through it. Their kids are in school, they’re packing lunches in the morning and trying to make
a better life.”
She reflects, “Family homelessness like this, people don’t even know it exists. Couch to couch family member to family member. It’s women who look very much like us and you can hear a pin drop when the speaker shares her story.”
Wine, Women & Shoes is in its fifth year. This dynamic day creates wonderful memories for those who attend and lasting impact for the families of Bridge Communities. Tickets sell out quickly as many want to be a part of this lively day.
“Invite your friends, get dressed up, and join the fun,” Ann says.
Wine, Women & Shoes is Saturday, March 8 from 11 a.m. – 4 pm at Oak Brook Hills Resort. Tickets are available at bridgecommunities.org

EDUCATION:
Dr. Bakshi: M.D., Windsor University School of Medicine; family medicine residency, Ascension Genesys Hospital.
Dr. Fernandes: D.O., NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine; internal medicine residency, Advocate Christ Medical Center
Dr. Nerissa Fernandes and Dr. Kunal Bakshi can tell you precisely why they chose to become primary care doctors.
Dr. Fernandes, an internal medicine specialist at Rush Hinsdale, was inspired by her father’s experience as a patient. “I felt drawn to specialize in internal medicine because of the profound impact that my dad’s internists had on his care plan during a time he was seriously ill,” says Dr. Fernandes, who sees adults 18 and older. “I was moved by their commitment to his health and wanted to do the same for my patients.”
Dr. Bakshi, a family medicine doctor at Rush Hinsdale who treats children and grown-ups, had such a passion for mental health that he originally wanted to be a psychologist. “But I found the way that probably has the most impact on people’s lives—as far as mental health and just general health—was being a family medicine doctor.”
Both physicians stress the importance of listening to their patients and tailoring their care accordingly.
“Two patients can have the same medical diagnosis,” Dr. Fernandes says, “but my approach and care plan for each one is different based on what matters to them and how the diagnosis and treatment will impact their life.”
As for Dr. Bakshi: ”I consistently prioritize shared decisionmaking in addressing a patient’s healthcare needs. Whether determining the need for tests or prescribing medications, I ensure that decisions are aligned with the patient’s individual goals and overall well-being.”

MEREL FAMILY LAW
Compassionate Advocacy for Navigating Life’s Toughest Moments
WORDS BY JANIS MVK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN / HAIR, MAKEUP, AND STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
Since the firm’s inception nearly 16 years ago, Merel Family Law has grown to become one of the elite family law firms in Chicago. Headquartered in the Loop, with suburban offices in Highland Park and Hinsdale, the firm, with more than 20 hardworking attorneys builds exceptional client relationships with high-net-worth individuals navigating complex family law issues.
Specializing in all facets of family law, from divorce to child custody, property division, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, orders of protection, and everything in between, the firm is dedicated to understanding each client’s unique needs and exceeding their expectations. “We treat each client as an individual, not just another case,” says Jonathan Merel, founder and managing principal. “We take what clients want and formulate an individualized plan of attack for each case.”
“Our philosophy is to take a holistic approach to our cases. We get to know our clients well, making an effort to understand them and what motivates them, as well as understanding what seems to motivate their spouse,” says Melissa Caballero Dunn, managing partner. “It helps us develop a strategy that is tailored and unique to that particular case and that particular client—helping us deliver the most specific results you possibly can that are in line with their goals.”
Trailblazers in the industry, Merel Family Law takes a modern, clientfocused approach to family law. Their state-of-the-art headquarters reflects this commitment, featuring fully equipped Zoom courtrooms for virtual proceedings, a dedicated children’s room for cases involving minors, and even a meditation room to provide a calming space during challenging moments. Every detail is purposefully designed to support client success and enhance the overall experience. “We know this can be a stressful process, and our goal is to go the extra mile to make sure our clients are the most prepared they can be, mentally and emotionally,” says Merel.
recently hired Chicago’s first in-house divorce coach, Kristina Lindsay. “We brought her on to bridge the communication gaps that appear between clients and attorneys during these types of cases,” says Merel. “She is able to help emotionally prepare clients and empower them to take control in this process.”
Moreover, the firm uses podcasts and social media to educate and engage both industry leaders and potential clients. “On podcasts, I discuss being a thought leader in family law, sharing ideas to advance the profession and provide colleagues across the country with access to my experiences and insights to support them in their careers,” says Merel. “Alongside that, I think it goes a long way with assisting our clients and giving them the knowledge that they may need as they embark on a divorce.”
Active in various charities and organizations through bar associations, Merel Family Law is committed to making a positive impact in the communities they serve. Additionally, all of the firm’s attorneys are encouraged to participate in pro bono cases. “This allows us to give back to our community, providing representation to those who might not otherwise have access due to financial constraints,” says Dunn. Many attorneys at the firm have embraced this goal, staying active in the community, and offering resources to those who need them most.
By offering clear communication, constant support, and a compassionate approach, Merel Family Law helps clients navigate the complexities of family law and transition into the next phase of their lives with confidence.
“People turn to us when they’re not in a great place, and we have the privilege of helping them move forward and making things better,” says Dunn.
Supporting clients through emotional challenges is a key focus at Merel Family Law. To address these challenges, the firm

BAKER’S MAN
The striking new Labriola Ristorante in Oak Brook does more than serve up an all-star selection of South Side Italian American classics, it’s a love letter to the baking passions and pizza pursuits of its owner and legendary namesake: Rich Labriola.
WORDS BY PETER MICHAEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
If you’re curious how Rich Labriola has kept his Labriola food empire in Oak Brook purring along since 2008, order his eponymous cheeseburger, the Richie Burger. You’ll get a juicy 7-ounce Black Angus patty. Slices of white cheddar. Some lettuce and tomato. All impressive, but will you look at that bun? All those quality fixings are sandwiched in the firm grip of Rich’s signature pretzel, which is impressive enough to make a Pennsylvania Dutch baker blush with envy. It took Rich a lot of time and early-morning baking sessions to get that bun where he wanted it. He leaned on the expertise of old German baker/pretzel master, known
Simple Chicago thin crust pizza
Mama's Meatballs
DINNER DATE
simply as Hanz, to teach him to prepare the base recipe.
Notice that lilt of sauerbraten sweetness on the back end when you bite into it?
That was Rich’s idea. He added a pinch of sugar to Hanz’s original recipe for ballast and balance. The bun won’t cottonmouth you like the oversalted twists you’d see in your local snack aisle. It’s more Bavarian. A Christkindlmarket pretzel roll. Firm, chewy and dense enough to absorb all those clear juice that run from the burger when you squeeze it toward your mouth.
When Rich Labriola announced, last summer, that he’d be combining his two Oak Brook eateries—Labriola Bakery & Café and La Barra—into a new Labriola Restaurant in the la Barra space, some regulars panicked. Would Richie’s pretzel rolls return? What about his famous pizzas, which he’s had a hand in baking since he was a kid, when he helped out at his father’s pizza parlor in Calumet Park.
Never fear: They’re all here. The best of both restaurant menus remain—including a full menu of Italian American pastas, salads and subs—all served in a sprawling dining room, which includes a spiffy all-season patio.
If you’re curious what differentiates Labriola from the dozens of other Italian trattorias around town, the answer is simple: This is a kitchen that still—God bless its dough-smattered soul— believes in the importance of baking its own: the alchemy derived from mixing flour, water, and salt in
the right ratios.
At some point or another, you might have heard the Legend of Richie Labriola, aka the Chief Dough Boy. To make a long story short, he fell in love with artisanal breads when he was in his 20s, then spent the next few decades baking every possible roll, pizza and doughnut you can imagine.
His thin-crust pizzas (expect a 20-minute wait) remind me of the South Side pies— Vince’s was a personal favorite—that my family used to drive from the North Side and pick up for special occasions. I order my Labriola thin-crust pizzas straight up,
with just sausage. It’s the sort of unfussy pie that gave tavern-tyle pizza a good name. Labriola’s crust is much thicker than your ultra-thin saltine cracker variety—there’s no sloppy flopping here—and I personally appreciate a pizza doesn’t fingerprint you with flour dust whenever you pick up a piece. For those, who enjoy a heartier experience,
Cocktails
Limoncello Martini: On the sweetness scale, this sips more like a Lemon Drop than ’50-era martini, but the blend of citrus vodka, limoncello and mint lemonade makes it a crisp refresher that pairs well with calamari.
Prickly Pear Margarita: There’s nothing particularly Italian about it, but smooth is smooth. Ask your server to make it with mezcal instead of tequila, as the extra smoke dances particularly well with the sweet prickly pear syrup.

there are also deep dish and Neapolitan pizzas.
But if the prospect of polishing off a whole pie sounds daunting, I recommend downsizing to Labriola’s stracciatella and pizza bread app. No one is going to blame you for reaching for the pesto, but the stracciatella—the silky custard like strands of mozzarella stuffed inside a burrata pouch—comes from the Mozzarella Guys, who have become mozzarella miracles workers in Peotone, Illinois.
Sourcing locally is one of the ways, says Chief Operating Officer Chris Favero, that Labriola has evolved in recent years. Not too long ago, if you wanted to run a good Italian restaurant, you’d have to import your ingredients from Italy and upcharge your diners for that luxury. Not anymore. Part of the advantages of being in the restaurant game as long as Rich has is the friendships you make, whether it’s Labriola’s stracciatella connection or its seafood purveyors, who are responsible for the first-class whitefish on its menu.
If I could find a way to adhere to a Blue Zone diet, I’d eat Labriola’s whitefish three days a week. But the dishes that turn me on the most are the old Sinatra stuff. I am in love—and will always be in love—with Labriola’s meatballs. Slice one in half and they’re as soft as a loaf of brioche, incredibly moist and riven with air pockets.
I am also a sucker for Labriola’s polenta, which tastes like a soft parmesan pudding, as well as Richie’s Lemon chicken, which, for my money, is a sophisticated riff on a chicken Vesuvio, served with potatoes and a wine jus with some serious body. Quick tip: When in doubt, order anything on the menu that has Rich’s name attached to it.)
Close your meal with Labriola’s olive oil sponge cake, which is topped with a head-turning triple play: peach-thyme compote, whipped honey mascarpone and toasted almonds. It’s shaped, appropriately enough, like a mini loaf and tastes, like so much at Labriola, like a baker’s dream.

DISCOVER PARADISE AT THREE WATERS RESORT & MARINA JOURNEYS
A welcomed, luxe alternative within the Keys Island chain.
As I arrived at Three Waters Resort & Marina, the newest addition to the Islamorada Resort Collection, I was immediately swept into the laid-back luxury of the Florida Keys. Located in the heart of Islamorada—the Sport Fishing Capital of the World—this upscale resort offers an incredible mix of engaging programming, dynamic culinary destinations, and captivating design. From its chic guest rooms to waterside adventures, Three Waters is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience to savor.
Stepping into the resort’s modern lobby, I was struck by its design—coral stone, lush greenery, and an open layout that reflected the natural beauty of the surrounding mangroves. The Rum Library, a collaboration with Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, immediately caught my attention. Sampling locally made spirits as I checked in felt the perfect way to ease into vacation mode.
The resort features 214 island-inspired guest rooms, blending warm sandy tones with vibrant blues and corals reminiscent of the surrounding waters and sunsets. My room felt elegant and cozy, with thoughtful touches celebrating the Keys’ unique charm. For those seeking extra privacy, The Cove—a resort-within-a-resort, recently opened in 2024—offers king rooms, suites, and access to a private beach lagoon and pool.
One of the highlights of my stay was the incredible dining.
With nine unique concepts, Three Waters has something for every palate. Here are just a few that stood out to me:
After checking in and settling into our room at the Three Waters Resort, we started our stay with a quick, light, and healthful bite at The Cove’s Hideaway. The casual yet inviting atmosphere made it the perfect spot to unwind after our journey.
On our first night, we had the privilege of dining at Kindler Restaurant. Though its official opening isn’t until early 2025, I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek—and a taste. The experience was nothing short of spectacular, with the highlight being their live-fire cooking. The wood-grilled seafood tower and Portuguese Piri Piri chicken were absolutely unforgettable. To top it off, the chef prepared freshly caught fish fresh caught from an afternoon fishing trip, making the meal truly personal and memorable.
The next morning, after a restful night, we headed to Mercado Morada for breakfast. The combination of fresh tropical fruit, creamy Greek yogurt, and homemade granola was exactly what I needed to kickstart the day.
For lunch and afternoon cocktails, we found ourselves at the iconic Tiki Bar. Famous as the birthplace of the original Rum Runner cocktail, the bar has been reimagined with mid-century flair while maintaining its rich history. It’s a must-visit for anyone who appreciates local charm and culture.
On our second evening, we were in the mood for something lighter and discovered Little Limón, perched just above Mercado Morada. With breathtaking 270-degree ocean views, this raw bar was an absolute delight. The menu, featuring fresh ceviche, crudos, and oysters, was a perfect complement to the stunning surroundings.
The next morning, after sleeping in, we were ready for an early lunch with a roaring appetite. I couldn’t resist the Islander pizza—a unique and delicious blend of white sauce, Scotch Bonnet heat, and fresh conch. It was the perfect prelude to a sunny afternoon by the beachside pool.
We spent the afternoon soaking up the sunshine at the resort’s scenic beachside pool and Kokomo Bar. Relaxing in the water with one of their signature cocktails from the Keys’ only swim-up bar was a true highlight of the trip. It felt like the epitome of a perfect, relaxing vacation.
On our final day, just before heading to the airport, we couldn’t leave without one last indulgence—a stop at Lucky Twist, the
Three Waters Resort room
JOURNEYS
beachside ice cream shoppe. A sweet treat by the water was the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable stay.
Whether I sought relaxation or adventure, the resort delivered on every front. As someone passionate about being on the water, I found the marina to be nothing short of a paradise. With the deepest channel in the Upper Keys, it boasts 72 slips, fishing charters led by seasoned captains, and even a convenient boat valet service.
Another highlight of my visit was participating in the "Fish Like a Local" class, an immersive experience that taught everything from fly casting to lobstering. This hands-on activity deepened my appreciation for Islamorada’s vibrant fishing heritage. Later, I challenged myself with paddle cast-and-catch lessons, which combined the thrill of fishing with the balance and focus of stand-up paddleboarding—an unforgettable and rewarding experience.
While exploring the resort, I discovered the BOTE House at La Siesta Resort & Villas, a sister property within the Islamorada Resort Collection. This watersports hub is a testament to the BOTE brand story, which began with founders Corey and Magda Cooper’s passion for water and their vision for a better paddleboard. Inspired by the laid-back, water-centric lifestyle in Destin, Florida, they set out to create a board that was stable enough for fishing, stylish, and easy to use. With just $7,000 from their cashed-in 401K, the Coopers left their successful careers behind to launch BOTE, which has since become synonymous with innovation in premium paddleboards, kayaks, and water accessories.
The BOTE House at La Siesta Resort is one of a handful of exclusive locations worldwide where guests can fully embrace the BOTE lifestyle. Destinations like Destin, where the brand
originated, offer similar hubs for water enthusiasts. At the BOTE House, I paddled out into the calm waters, experiencing firsthand the exceptional quality and fun that define the brand. These unique locations combine state-of-the-art equipment with stunning natural surroundings, creating unforgettable adventures for anyone who loves life on the water.
Throughout the property, I noticed the attention to detail in the thoughtful design. From coral stone and mangrove-inspired vegetation to the palette of sandy neutrals and ocean blues, every element felt like an homage to the Keys. The resort’s three pools offered something for everyone—family-friendly fun, peaceful seclusion, and a swim-up bar for ultimate indulgence.
At night, I enjoyed seasonal events like live music and themed culinary experiences. Families and couples alike will find programming tailored to their needs, whether it’s a kids’ activity or a romantic sunset cruise.
Three Waters Resort & Marina offers more than just a Florida Keys getaway—it provides a rare and unforgettable opportunity to immerse yourself in the spirit of Islamorada. From luxurious accommodations and diverse dining options to curated adventures like the exclusive BOTE House experience, every aspect of this resort reflects the unique charm and vibrancy of the region. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, exploration, or a mix of both, Three Waters Resort stands out as a true gem in the heart of the Keys.

REDEFINING FAMILY
Morgan Stogsdill of Beermann LLP shares how post holidays many families are redefined.
WORDS BY JANIS MVK
Ushering in the new year often comes with personal change. For many, the new year symbolizes fresh starts and bold decisions. For others, it’s the moment they’ve been quietly anticipating yet dreading—confronting the cracks in a marriage widening for months if not years.
Morgan Stogsdill, Head of Family Law at Beermann LLP, an award-winning family law firm with offices in Chicago and on the North Shore, says this time of year often brings an influx of clients struggling with their relationships. “We see a rise in divorces happening early in the year because many people just hold on until the holidays are over,” she says. The reality is that there is never a perfect time to move forward. “There will always be another holiday or another event, and it really comes down to whether couples can continue to live in an unhappy relationship.”
With her extensive experience, she not only guides clients through complex legal matters but also helps them recognize when it might be time to reevaluate their personal relationships. She notes that the end of a relationship often becomes evident in everyday moments—from avoiding the stress of going home to dodging family events that require putting on a facade. “You are not alone. Ask yourself how you feel when your spouse calls you or whether you want to spend time alone with them. The answer to these questions may show something underlying should be evaluated,” she says.
For many, hesitation stems from concern for their children. As a mother, Stogsdill understands the importance of family integrity but also prioritizes well-being. “Children know when
their parents are miserable, even if they don’t say it outright,” she says. “Showing them what a happy and healthy parent looks like—whether married or not—is the greatest gift you can give.”
As one of Illinois’ premier family law attorneys at the largest family law firm in Illinois, Stogsdill brings high standards and expertise to managing complex cases with clients ranging from CEOs to business owners and celebrities. “I keep the pressure down and redefine the family in a confidential way,” she says. “The best thing I can do as an attorney is allow the family to move forward with dignity.”
Her passion for supporting clients doesn’t stop at the negotiation table—it extends to the airwaves. With her hit podcast, How Not to Suck at Divorce, she blends empathy and valuable divorce information to make the complexities of divorce approachable for listeners around the globe. “Divorce is a tough journey,” she says, “but you don’t have to face it alone.” Her fresh, relatable approach keeps audiences coming back for advice, reassurance, and a few laughs along the way.
Beermann has been managing complex, high-asset cases since 1958. With a focus on discretion and care, Stogsdill ensures each client receives personalized attention and tailored strategies, guiding families through transitions with dignity and respect. “Our goal is to help families move forward amicably with the best interest of their family at the forefront,” she says.

THE LAST WORD
NEEDLE OF HOPE
Marshall Field V reflects on his work with Veterinary Initiative for Endangered Wildlife and why his new role on the Board of Directors may be one of the most meaningful jobs he’s
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS ILLUSTRATION BY TOM BACHTELL
Aever had.
few generations ago, a young retailer named Marshall Field famously quipped a six-word business motto that would define his eponymous department store—“Give the lady what she wants.” Fast forward more than a century and one might say his namesake great-grandson (several times over) is repurposing that mantra, albeit for a more altruistic cause—a valiant mission led by one “lady” in particular. Marshall Field V, a retired businessman, publisher, and philanthropist, is doing the thing he values most at this stage of his life—donating his time and business acumen for the good of humanity. “When I ran a big company, it didn’t really move the needle as far as the world is concerned,” says Field, who recently joined the board of directors for Veterinary Initiative for Endangered Wildlife (VIEW). Continuing his family’s generational commitment to civic life, Field has served in multiple roles for national nonprofits with a special interest in conservation and the environment. Fortunately for the planet at large, about 10 years ago he was introduced to Dr. Deborah McCauley, a wildlife veterinarian who co-founded VIEW in 2012. The catalyst for the cause came when McCauley—who was working for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks—received a call from Yellowstone National Park. Bighorn sheep were mysteriously dying and she was summoned to find out why. What McCauley discovered was that healthy domestic sheep passed pneumonia on to the bighorn sheep, killing 90 percent of that herd. “The thing that’s unique about VIEW is that it’s saving wild animals from dying from diseases usually caught from a domestic animal,” says Field. “When she started, nobody did this. Now the whole world wants her.” After her success at Yellowstone, McCauley was called to Nepal to figure out what was killing its tigers. She found the source of the illness and then trained two local veterinarians to help prevent it. The government of India also requested her assistance to find out why hundreds of Indian elephants are dying. “India’s tigers are also getting a disease that most likely comes from the cattle herds or dogs of their villagers,” says Field, explaining that the VIEW CEO is also a married mother of two who will often fly the family close to where she is working. “She’s going to go and find out what the diseases are, and what they can do to inoculate or cure that disease.” While Field enjoys spending time with family, helping to raise funds to support McCauley’s important work is perhaps one of the most fulfilling jobs of his career. “When you lay down at night, the pay’s not very good but you’re very satisfied,” he adds. “She’s making a huge difference and anyone who wants to help, we’d be more than happy to take their money.” McCauley has been so busy, in fact, that she’s barely had time to build the organization. However, with a new development director on board and Field leading the charge, chances are this “lady” will ultimately get what she wants—to save endangered wildlife around the globe for generations to come.
