Editor’s Note

Clark Bundy and Lowey Sichol

Infant Welfare Society Family Health Center, Chicago

hen I assumed the role of Editor-In-Chief of Forest & Bluff a few months ago, multiple people reached out to suggest we do a story on Chrissy Davis. I couldn’t wait to meet this beloved woman whose reputation for philanthropic excellence preceded her. I was delighted when I bumped into Davis by chance at the Lake Forest Shop (she sold me a belt and we started chatting). Kind and self-effacing, Davis had no interest in doing a feature about herself. But when talk turned to the Infant Welfare Society (IWS), Davis’ passion for the cause put a smile on both of our faces. Happily, she relented and agreed to talk about her favorite charity. In this month’s cover story, we recap the successes of the Lake Forest Chapter of Infant Welfare Society, which, under Davis’ leadership, raised over $800,000 for the IWS Family Health Center. Moving on to our other features, in Globe Trotter we introduce Lake Forest resident Jim Staples, founder of Orbridge, an educational travel company that partners with universities to provide rich travel experiences for alumni. Staples’ infectious love of travel started early and continues unabated today. We also celebrate the 10th anniversary of Jen Bobay’s cosmetic line, Jar Bar Makeup, in Cheers to 10 Years. A teacher by profession, Bobay launched her business to educate woman in the fine art of makeup application. A decade later, Bobay’s commitment to empowering women through the meditative powers of a good beauty regimen remains intact. Continuing our focus on passionate people, we speak with Champion Way’s co-owner Lowey Sichol in Ways and Greens. Sichol and her brother, Clark Bundy, foster low handicaps and the love of golf at their family-run indoor training facility, Champion Ways—truly a Lake County hidden gem. We’re thrilled to feature Brooke Tagliaferro,

a member of Forest & Bluff’s Advisory Council, in The Portrait. The consummate “connector,” Brooke is quick to open her Rolodex and recommend the perfect person to embroider a towel, make a custom hat, or bake the tasti-

est cookie in town. She’s a generous soul who finds the best in people and shares her insider knowledge without hesitation. In The Last Word, writer Sherry Thomas muses on the prolific career of Arthur H. Miller—author, architectural historian, and preservation expert. This year Miller will help judge the Preservation Awards (detailed in Preservation Matters), now in its 33rd year of honoring community members’ worthy efforts to uphold Lake Forest’s architectural legacy. I hope you enjoy the February issue and I wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Beach, mountain, or city for vacation? Mountains! Any time of year. Hiking or skiing. I love it all!

rooke Tagliaferro of Lake Forest truly understands the art of living in the moment. It’s a life skill she learned from her late grandmother, Shirley Leifer, who continues to inspire her as a wife, mother, and volunteer. “When I was about 10 years old, my grandmother picked me up to take me for tea,” explains Tagliaferro. “I did not like the dress my mom put me in so my grandmother Favorite place in the world, decided we had to stop at Saks first.” They spent the so far? IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Preservation Matters

I

The Lake Forest Preservation Foundation is accepting nominations for its annual awards from now through March 31.

f there was any doubt about Lake Forest’s commitment to preserving its architecture, the 2023 City of Lake Forest Community-Wide Survey erased it. Ninety-two percent of respondents cited the historic character of Lake Forest as “important” or “somewhat important” when choosing to live here. At the forefront of promoting and safeguarding the town’s exceptional architectural integrity is the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation (LFPF). Each spring LFPF gives out awards for outstanding stewardship of local buildings, landscapes, and harmonious contributions to neighborhoods. Any structure or landscape built over fifty years ago is eligible for nomination. LFPF invites everyone to participate in the process. Nominations may come from any interested party—a property owner, a neighbor, a friend, or even an admiring passerby. Handsome bronze plaques are presented to award winners at LFPF’s annual meeting in May and a reception follows at a historic Lake Forest property exemplifying LFPF’s efforts to preserve the town’s historic character. There are five award categories, the first four based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, with an additional category for new construction or infill. Judging is based on the ten standards from the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. • •

Preservation - Maintaining the historical integrity and character of a structure or landscape through conservation, maintenance and repair. Rehabilitation - Continuing the use of a historic structure through repair, alterations and additions while protecting its historical, cultural and architectural character. Includes adaptive reuse. Restoration - Recovering, revealing or representing the state of a historic structure or landscape as it appeared at a particular time in history.

• •

Reconstruction - Recreating the form, features and details of a historic structure or landscape through new construction. New Construction or Infill - Building new construction that demonstrates exemplary contextual compatibility in an established neighborhood.

Gorton Center will host an information session on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. to give more background on criteria for successful award nominations. To learn more about the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation’s annual spring awards or to make a nomination, please visit lfpf.org/preservationawards.

CHOOSE WISELY

Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer shares tips for finding the right divorce attorney to represent you and your family. words by Michone J. Riewer photography by Katrina Wittkamp styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Leanna Ernest

I

n the same way that no one wants to have an illness, no one wants to get divorced. But like finding the right doctor, finding the right divorce attorney is critical to a successful outcome. To get the right fit, there are many things to consider. Do you want a firm or do you want a person who works alone? Do you want someone who specializes in issues involving children? Do you want someone who’s familiar with small businesses? Do you want someone who understands executive compensation and restricted stock units? Do you want someone who is familiar with each of the judges in the county and can advise you regarding what to expect? Do you want someone who’s able to listen and can help you create a strategy for your family? Do you want someone who can quickly review and understand financial information? Do you want someone who understands retirement assets? Do you want someone who patiently answers your questions? Do you want someone who can write and effectively communicate? Do you want someone who is going to be a fierce and effective advocate in court? Do you want someone who can sit down at a conference table, find a creative solution, and bring people to the middle? In my experience, every one of these qualities is important and in fact, you deserve to have nothing less than an attorney who has it all. One of the common misconceptions is that if you want your divorce to be amicable, you should choose an attorney who does not specialize in trial or litigation. As a result, because you don’t want to go to trial and you don’t want to be involved in litiga-

Michone J. Riewer

tion, you choose someone with no trial experience. This could end up putting you at a disadvantage. I have found that having an attorney who has the strength and experience to go to trial, when needed, is actually a deterrent to both litigation and trials. Strength changes everything. It’s much more effective to walk into a room to negotiate a settlement and create an amicable resolution if your attorney has the strength and experience to go to trial. You are much less likely to be bullied into a settlement that does not make sense. Similarly, if you’re focused on child and custody issues, you may choose an attorney who only specializes in those issues and is not as experienced in the financial and property area of divorce. However, once the child issues are resolved, you’ll quickly learn that you need an attorney who has the knowledge and expertise in the financial area to make sure that you and your children are financially set up for success. Both areas are important to the successful resolution of your divorce. Again, just like when you find a new doctor, when choosing your divorce attorney, interview more than one. Ask questions, not only about the one issue that is most important to you but about each of the areas of divorce. Ask them about their strategy and notice whether they have listened to and responded to your questions and concerns. Find someone who will be pleasant to deal with, and who you feel is worthy of your trust. The divorce process is much easier when you choose the right divorce attorney to guide you through the process. Michone J. Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

Partnerships Under Pressure How to support athletes during times of stress words by Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo photography by Katrina Wittkamp styling by Theresa DeMaria

n sports, the stakes are high, competition is fierce, and stress is an ever-present companion. While it has the potential to strain relationships, stress can also serve as a powerful force that can test and fortify bonds within the athletic community and the relationships that bind it together—athletes and coaches, coaches and staff, parents and players. Understanding how stress manifests in challenging interactions is crucial to building the resilient skills—and partnerships—that support the unique pressures of athletic life. Focusing on the positive: Overcoming mindset challenges I see athletes fall into the comparison trap every day—and their performance suffers for it. failure in a future event. As you can imagine, this negative forecasting becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, as athletes may unconsciously align their decisions and actions with the impending loss. To overwrite fortune-telling, successful athletes use positive visualization techniques to change their future—at least in their minds! Visualizing success can harness emotions and even the senses to enhance preparation and performance. When an athlete says: “My coach won’t start me again because I messed up.” Help them rephrase: “I know what I did wrong, and I can see and feel myself doing it right the next time I go in.”

Internalizing feedback: Navigating emotional responses It’s common for athletes to perceive a coach’s critique as a measure of their skills or their value as a person rather than an opportunity for improvement. When we can look at critiques as an investment in our peak performance—instead of as a withdrawal from our self-esteem—we are more likely to accept them with gratitude, grit, and growth. When an athlete says, “I can’t do anything right,” help them foStop: Striving for perfection. In the face of challenges, it’s natural to fixate on the negative. Southern Mac & Cheese Bake with Spiced Tomato words, photography, and recipe by Monica Kass Rogers

W

hen I was a young cook, getting the right sauce consistency for baked macaroni and cheese was hit or miss. I’d make the roux, stir in the milk, cheese and noodles, pop it in the oven and hope for the best. Discovering an old Southern recipe in a community cookbook that told me I could skip the roux and simply thicken the sauce by whisking egg into the milk was a great revelation. This method became my standard for baked mac & cheese: Never too thick but always cheesy-oozy the way my kids liked it. Somewhere along the line, I started mixing spiced tomatoes into the

METHOD MAKE MACARONI Heat large pot of water to boiling with 2 tsp of salt stirred in. Add macaroni and cook, stirring occasionally to prevent clumping, until macaroni is cooked but not mushy. Strain macaroni in a large colander. Rinse with cold water. Set aside.

casserole, heightening the flavor, and never looked back. With both sharp cheddar and Colby layered in the mix, this bake is super cheesy. I like to use an aged white cheddar, but you can substitute your favorite good quality sharp cheddar. Stick with Colby for the middle layer. I usually make this with regular elbow macaroni, but whole wheat or gluten-free options work well, too. For the tomato mix-in, I prefer to use Campari unless it’s summer and there are farmers market or home-grown beauties available. Crowning all, panko-crumb topping adds a nice crunch.

ASSEMBLE AND BAKE Place oven rack in upper 1/3 of oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spoon half of the macaroni mixture into a casserole dish and stir in half of the spiced tomatoes. Cover the noodles with the 2 cups of grated Colby cheese. Top with remaining noodles. Spoon remaining spiced tomatoes in dollops over the noodles, dotting evenly to cover the MAKED SPICED TOMATOES Rinse tomatoes, quarter and add to a pot whole expanse. Cover casserole with foil with 1 Tbsp. olive oil over low heat. Smash and bake in 350 degree oven for 35 mintomatoes with a potato masher. Stir in chili utes. Remove casserole from oven. Discard powder, paprika and salt. Simmer for about foil and top casserole with remaining 2 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until raw cups of grated cheddar. Mix panko bread tomato flavors mellow. Remove from heat crumbs with melted butter and a pinch of salt. Spread crumbs evenly over the cheese. and set aside. Increase oven heat to broil setting. Place casserole back in oven for a scant minute MAKE CHEESE SAUCE In a large pot or bowl, whisk milk with eggs or two until crumbs are golden brown and and mascarpone cheese until smooth. Stir in cheese is melty and bubbly. (Watch careful2 cups of the grated cheddar cheese, pepper, ly—the topping can go from golden brown to burned in an instant!) Remove from oven salt and cooked/drained macaroni. and allow to setup for 15 minutes. Serve.

SERVES 10 INGREDIENTS 2 tsp Kosher salt • • 1 lb elbow macaroni • 1 lb (8 medium-sized) Campari tomatoes, quartered to make 2 cups • 1 Tbsp olive oil • ½ tsp Kashmiri chili powder OR ¼ tsp cayenne pepper • 2 tsp smoked paprika • ¼ tsp kosher salt • 2 cups whole milk • 3 large eggs • ½ cup mascarpone cheese • 12 oz block of sharp cheddar cheese, grated with the large holes of the grater to make 4 cups (I use aged white cheddar) • Several grinds of fresh cracked black pepper and 1 tsp kosher salt • • 8 oz block of Colby cheese, grated with the large holes of the grater to make 2 cups • ½ cup panko bread crumbs • 1 ½ Tbsp melted butter • Pinch of salt

The new pediatric vital stations at Chicago’s IWS Family Health Center are being dedicated in honor of Lake Forest’s Chrissy Davis, who led the Lake Forest Chapter of Infant Welfare Society in raising a record amount of money through its 2023 Showhouse. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Maria Ponce styling by Theresa DeMaria makeup by Margareta Komlenac

A

T THE FIRST MEETING following one of the most successful showhouses in its chapter’s history, board members of the Lake Forest Chapter of Infant Welfare Society (IWS) had a surprise for their president Chrissy Davis. “It was so kind,” says Davis, overcome with tears as she tells the story. “I was wrapping up a chapter meeting at my house. My living room was full of our amazing volunteers. Then Jennifer Mower and Sara Georgi, two past chapter presidents, along with our current vice president Wendy Franzen said, ‘We have a surprise for you. Our chapter would like to dedicate the new pediatric vital stations in your honor.’ I started to cry. I was so surprised and moved that they wanted to do this for me. This chapter is family and the record amount of money we raised would not have occurred without the help of each and every member.” Founded in 1911 with a mission to provide fresh milk in response to high infant mortality rates, the IWS Family Health Center now provides an array of comprehensive medical services to Chicago’s underserved men, women, and children through its Logan Square clinic. The Lake Forest Chapter of IWS is part of the Auxiliary of IWS Family Health, which raises money for the IWS Family Health. The Auxiliary is a nonprofit organization comprised of seven chapters located throughout the Chicago area. Since its inception, the Auxiliary has donated more than $142 million to IWS and is its largest donor year after year. Biannually, the Lake Forest Chapter of IWS hosts a designer showhouse as its primary fundraiser. In 2023, under Davis’ direction, the Lake Forest Chapter debuted a stunning home designed by William Frazier in 1969—set on nine acres of beautifully landscaped property, including a five-acre conservation area. A total of 34 interior designers and eight landscape

“...I think everyone involved agrees that it is well worth the effort.”

designers lent their creative expertise to transform these spaces into captivating works of art that resonated with visitors from across the Chicago area and nationally. The fundraiser kicked off with an amazing opening night Preview Party, generously catered by the jdR family of companies, and saw a remarkable turnout of over 650 guests. Then over the course of four weeks, a staggering 8,000 guests visited the property, raising more than $800,000. “Our chapter was so excited to learn that the 2023 Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens raised the most money in our 40-year history of running showhouses,” Davis says. “Over the years, we’ve questioned whether managing a showhouse is the most effective way to fundraise for the clinic. Our 85 board members make the commitment to work on this event for an entire year. We always come back to the fact that the showhouse is much more than a fundraiser. It brings together so many elements—the board, our local community, corporate sponsors, talented designers, landscapers, and contractors. As we’re working together, we’re raising much needed money for IWS, we’re giving exposure to emerging as well as established designers, and we’re highlighting the important services that IWS Family Health provides. It’s a lot of work, but in the end, I think everyone involved agrees that it is well worth the effort.”

The clinic provides health care services and education to medically underserved and vulnerable families. The mission of IWS Family Health Center is to provide a continuum of integrated, quality, and preventative health services to children and their families, enabling them to lead healthy and productive lives. “At the end of the showhouse, we delighted in sending a large donation to IWS,” Davis says. “The clinic leadership decides where the money can be best used and meet the most immediate needs. I don’t think I’ve ever worked with more passionate and hardworking people than Jerry Isikoff (CEO of IWS Family Health) and Michelle Di Benedetto (Chief Strategy Officer). They care so deeply about the clinic families and are such wonderful stewards of the Auxiliary’s donations.” The 2023 Showhouse & Gardens was the19th to be held by the Lake Forest Chapter. Additionally, this same chapter hosted its 55th annual Antiques & Treasures event in September. These tried-and-true events raise critical funding and support efforts like the Angel Baby Diaper Bag program. This program gives new

mothers diaper bags complete with the necessities they need to care for their infant. Recently, the Lake Forest Chapter also received a donation from the family of past board president Janie Cooper. This money was used to open “Janie’s Kitchen,” a beautiful new food pantry inside the IWS Family Health Center that offers pantry staples, bread, dairy products, and fresh produce to patients through a partnership with the Chicago Food Depository. The new pediatric vital stations dedicated in Davis’ honor will open this spring. Because these stations are

often the first point of entry for a patient, the clinic wants this space to be especially warm, happy, and comforting for the young children who are often scared when they come in for care. It makes perfect sense that this newly renovated space carries the name of the woman who worked so hard to make it possible. “Chrissy is not only an extraordinary leader, but she is also one of the hardest working and kindest humans I’ve ever worked with—a rare combination in this world,” says Franzen. “Above all, she is a tireless champion of IWS Family Health. It gives our chapter tremendous pride and joy to make this donation in her name.” To make a donation or learn more about IWS Family Health, visit iwsfamilyhealth.org.

Globe Trotter Lake Forest resident Jim Staples turned a lifetime love of travel and adventure into a thriving educational travel company. words by Mitch Hurst photography by Katrina Wittkamp styling by Theresa DeMaria

J

IM STAPLES GOT THE TRAVEL BUG at young age. His father was an attorney, and often would travel to the firm’s offices scattered around the globe, taking the family with him. Staples was all too happy to tag along. A fouryear rugby player at the University of Michigan, Jim spent a summer in Australia playing the sport and his passion to visit other countries and continents grew. “When I was an early teen, I remember thinking as I walked along one of the stunning beaches of Rio de Janeiro with my dad how lucky I was to go on these trips every other year and see these sites and cultures I otherwise never would,” Staples says. “I would replay the tour in mind for weeks after returning.” Staples also possessed a keen interest in business and started a lawn-moving service during his high school years. A few years later, while attending business school at Northwestern University, he took a job as a sales rep for an educational travel company owned by one of his lawn-service customers. After a decade moving up in the company, he struck out on his own. Today, his passion for travel and business is evident in the company he founded in 2008 and continues to run, Orbridge. The company, which celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2023, partners with colleges and universities around the country to provide rich educational

travel experiences for alumni. “In a nutshell, the educational travel market solicits and markets to college and university alumni associations throughout the country. We work with 140 different alumni associations, including several in Illinois like the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, as well as the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University,” Staples says. “We also work with many Ivy League schools, PAC-12 schools, SEC, Big 12 and ACC schools along with dozens of small liberal arts colleges, which happen to have wonderful travel programs.” Orbridge’s economic model depends somewhat on how tight the connection is between the associations and the schools’ alumni. Staples mentions Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, which has a close-knit group of alumni who maintain an affinity for their college experience. Staples says those shared, formative years make for a collegial group of like-minded travelers eager to learn and immerse themselves in a local culture. “Then you have Principia College in downstate Illinois, a Christian Science college and they love traveling together and do exceedingly well on our programs,” says Staples. “It might surprise you. It’s not just the big schools that travel well.”

“Our goal is to always exceed expectations and doing that can be difficult.” One key to Orbridge’s success is that the company often brings along professors from the respective universities on their trips, so the trips become highly educational because the professors give insightful commentary throughout the program, as well as several lecturers. Orbridge also employs top tier local guides, travel directors, and expedition leaders. Although a niche market, the educational travel space is crowded and competitive. Orbridge is one of five major companies that offer tours around the world. It can put together a small ship for a tour to Alaska or the Galapagos Islands or a deluxe tour around the world by private jet. Wine and cuisine focused tours, in particular, are growing in popularity. “We’ve developed connections over the years in these travel markets so whether it’s a food and wine tour or an African safari we have an advantage when it comes to buying power, knowing the top guides in the region, and knowing the behind-the-scenes authentic excursions,” Staples says. “That’s some of our secret sauce.” Staples says the key to creating an authentic tour experience is having relationships with people on the ground, whether it be vineyard owners, a deluxe sailing ship company Jim Staples kayaking in Churchill, Manitoba with beluga whales

in Egypt, or a supplier in Africa that can provide high-end safari vehicles with open-air roofs and access to the best private properties. “Our goal is always to exceed expectations and doing that can be difficult,” Staples says “In most cases, our guests are well-traveled, and the bar is high. By providing experiences that are immersive and meaningful, we’ve been fortunate that they keep coming back to us.” For its higher-end programs, Orbridge only books 4- and 5-star hotels, five-star ships, and deluxe villas, particularly across Europe. The company maintains a large guest services team of 11, and its university partners often rely on that team to handle the needs of guests. Team members are in regular communication with guests to answer questions about everything from the weather to travel itineraries. “We often say there are three parts of a travel program. There’s the pre-tour, the tour itself, and post-tour, and hearing from guests over the years we are hard pressed to discern which is most important,” Staples says. “The obvious choice would be the tour itself, but you’ve got to get all three right if you want your guests to have a memorable travel experience.” Though his mom passed away a few years ago, Staples says she was on one the first Alaska tours Orbridge planned. They saw humpback whales roaming the waves and bears roaming the coastline. They went out on the water in kayaks and skiffs. He says the trip was “magical,” and she spoke about the experience at every major family gathering. “We had a joke about wondering when she might bring it up,” he says. “It was lovely because it was so meaningful to her. She so loved wildlife and she showed the impact we can have first-hand in our business, and we take that charge very seriously.” For more information about Orbridge, visit orbridge.com, and its sister company Sports and Entertainment Travel.

CHEERS TO 10 YEARS Jen Bobay celebrates 10 years as the founder of Jar Bar Makeup by teaching women and girls the power of a good beauty regimen. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Emil Sinanagic styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Theresa DeMaria

M

ILESTONES ARE OFTEN a time of reflection. And Jen Bobay’s 10-yearanniversary of founding Jar Bar Makeup is no exception. Jar Bar Makeup is a mineral makeup line that is free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and talc. “When I first launched my company in 2014, I thought my business would be more education about makeup application—teaching my friends and their daughters how to use makeup and what was in their products,” she explains. “It was kind

of an accident that we ended up marketing the makeup itself.” Bobay believes today that her calling is bigger than selling makeup. So, she’s tapping into her science teacher toolbox to teach women of all ages the meditative powers of a good beauty regimen. While her glosses will continue to be available at The Lake Forest Shop and her Gloss and Glow Pop Ups also will be offered at her favorite boutiques, educating clients on how to be their own makeup artist will be Bobay’s focus going forward. “I love being a teacher,” says Bobay, who in addition to running her beauty brand also teaches science at St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette. She has

also taught junior high at the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest. “There is something about building up others through what you teach them that is so rewarding. I see it every day with my classroom of students and the teachers I work alongside. Now I want to be able to create this same type of change and empower women through what I know about makeup and beauty.” Bobay credits much of her success to the collaborative network of people in her corner. “Ellen Stirling was an incredible role model to me,” she says of

the late owner of The Lake Forest Shop. “And throughout my life, my mother, husband, son, and several friends have stepped in and helped me with many things. Working with others has been my favorite part of creating Jar Bar. My grandmother used to listen to women share their problems when she would be doing their hair as a stylist. And when they would ask for advice, she lifted them up with the art of beauty.” To learn more about Bobay and her brand Jar Bar Makeup, visit jarbarmakeup.com.

10 Lessons Jen Bobay Has Learned in 10 Years of Business 1. Surround yourself with creative, positive people. 2. Stick to the core of why you started. 3. Relationships build businesses. 4. True relationships in business are fostered through personal touches. 5. If you have a good product, it will sell despite everything. 6. Build a beautiful line that has products that are universally flattering. 7. Less competition, more collaboration. 8. Recognize talent and recruit them to your inner circle. 9. Listen to people you trust. 10. Wear a great lipstick.

Lake Bluff-based Champion Ways draws golfers of many levels who aim to hone all parts of their game and melt their handicaps at the unique indoor training facility. words by Bill McLean photography by Maria Ponce styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Margareta Komlenac

I

T’S 9 P.M. on a weekday, say a Thursday, and North Shore native Chip Green (a fictitious name) wants to work on his golf game ahead of an annual outing to South Carolina with his buddies Max “Mini” Driver and Sandy Von Trapp. Were he a member of Champion Ways, a unique indoor training facility for junior and adult golfers, he’d be able to do so at the drop of a visor. Champion Ways is based in Lake Bluff and open 356 days a year, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Its mission is to create champion golfers through access to a premium, 5,000-square-foot facility, exclusive practice memberships, and private lessons. Champion Ways features multiple hitting bays with Foresight Sport technology; 1,500 square feet of real-feel chipping and putting greens; projection screens and world-renowned golf courses to play; the availability of PGA instructors for private lessons; and fairly priced practice memberships that include a key fob to the complex on Herky Drive, located dozens of prodigious tee shots from Lake Bluff Golf Club. “It’s like a gym for golfers,” says co-owner, CEO, and Winnetka resident Lowey Sichol, who also writes children’s books when she’s not working on lowering her impressive 2.3 golf handicap. “It opened (in 2016) as a place for mostly junior golfers. Now many of our members are adults in their 30s, 40s, and early 50s who finally have some time to work on their golf game and improve. Champion Ways has everything golfers of all levels need to improve from simulators to an incredible short game area. And it’s rarely crowded. Members come in on their own time, turn on the music, and well, it’s just a cool place to be in the winter, especially when it’s snowing or single digit temps outside. “We often hear people say, ‘This is a hidden gem,’ or, ‘This is the best-kept secret in Lake County,’” she adds. “When our members finish up after an hour or two, they’re pumped, whether they’ve worked on their short game, driver, approach shots, or just played a course for fun. You can do it all here.” Champion Ways’ original owner, PGA Kiel Alderink, informed Sichol in 2021 that he was planning to move out of state and shut the facility down. Sichol’s golfing children— twin daughters Carter and Peyton and son Tucker—had been avid Champion Ways regulars. Sichol’s immediate response to Alderink’s intentions: “Hold on.”

She then called her brother, Clark Bundy, who, like Sichol, golfed often and also earned an MBA degree at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. “I asked him, ‘Want to buy a golf facility with me?’” the sister recalls. They bought it. Bundy serves as Champion Ways co-owner and VP of operations. Alderink’s new title, from afar, is director of golf. Donnie Moline is one of Champion Ways’ four professional instructors, along with Mason Tomlinson, Taylor Lambertson, and Drew Barnes. Moline, in his third winter at Champion Ways, also teaches at Deerfield Golf Club & Learning Center in Riverwoods. “Champion Ways is a one of a kind facility in this area,” says Moline, who grew up in southeast Iowa. “We emphasize practice and training to improve one’s game—not one of those food, drink, and entertainment venues. The niche aspect of this facility is to show up and improve your skill set, to be equipped to take your game to the next level. The feedback from our technology takes the guesswork out, providing the data you need to stay on task and speed up progress. It’s a clean, relaxed environment where you can book your time well in advance and come and go as you please.” Champion Ways must be doing something right. Clark Bundy trained and practiced there for one winter and triggered a free fall—his handicap. Bundy’s golf number reached single digits for the first time. Meanwhile, Sichol’s daughters are both All-American, nationally ranked collegiate golfers. Carter, who plays number one for the Carleton College women’s golf team in Minnesota, recently won the 2023 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in October and placed 10th at the NCAA championship in May. Her twin sister Peyton leads the Hamilton College Continentals in New York and became the first women’s golfer in Hamilton College’s history to earn All-American status and play at the NCAA championship. Lowey’s sophomore son, Tucker, plays varsity golf at North Shore Country Day and helped the Raiders win regional and sectional titles. “Golf … it’s what we do,” Lowey Sichol says. Champion Ways is located at 28915 North Herky Drive, Unit 105, in Lake Bluff. Visit championways.com for more information. FO REST & BLUFF 57

Legacy of Hope The late Chuck Walsh, a Lake Forest businessman and partner in the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox sports teams, grew up in three orphanages, including Maryville Academy. On December 18, Maryville opened a new school named in his honor. words by Mitch Hurst

D

ESPITE SPENDING 11 of his first 17 years in three different orphanages, the late Charles H. Walsh (also known as Chuck) described his childhood as a happy one. The Lake Forest resident went on to great success as a businessman, eventually joining Jerry Reinsdorf as a partner in the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox sports teams, but never forgot the people who helped raised him. His support of the last orphanage where he resided, Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, continued throughout his life. And on December 18, Maryville unveiled a new school named in his honor. Aimed to help children with special learning needs, the Charles H. Walsh Sr. Academy & Career Tech High School (Walsh Academy) is a testament to Walsh and his widow Janie’s commitment to giving back to those who helped him during his youth. “Chuck was a friend and mentor to many and was known by all for his gentle modesty. His childhood days at Maryville never left him, and he continued to support Maryville until the end,” Janie says. “He never forgot who he was and how he grew up. Very few people were like him. He was a true gem, kind to everybody at every level of life, regardless of where you were in life.” His was a great American success story. After earning a bachelor’s degree at Northwestern University on the G.I. Bill (serving both in the National Guard and in the Army during the Korean War), Chuck went on to became founder and chairman of the Title Company of America; managing partner of Walsh Partners, a real estate development firm; principal of Walsh & Gahlberg Real Estate Group Inc.; and a principal of Walsh & Reynolds Financial Group, a financial planning firm. He was also a former chair-

man of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, former chairman of Elmhurst Savings The Walsh family and Loan, and chairman of Maryville Academy. Walsh Academy will build on Maryville’s former Jen School’s founding vision as an alternative pathway for special education students who are unable to succeed in their home schools. It follows a student-directed pace in a safe and nurturing environment with a classroom setting of no more than 10 students. Located at 6935 West Touhy in Niles, the school offers students ages 14 to 22 a curriculum that combines academic courses and emotional learning with enhanced career technical education (CTE) programs. It features 56,000 square feet of learning space, with 12 academic classrooms and eight for vocational learning. Walsh Academy’s current vocational classes focus on carpentry, small engines, bicycle repairs, screen printing, health careers, video podcasting, computer technologies, and culinary arts. The school also plans to add classes for welding, plumbing, HVAC, electric, and agriculture in the future. “We are incredibly honored to be a part of this amazing academic program that will give teens with learning differences a vision and a vocational skill to make them successful working adults,” says Janie Walsh. “I know that my husband would be thrilled that we are giving back to the institution that served him so well and gave him confidence, encouragement, and a vocational skill to go on and lead a successful life.”

ew Year. Younger face. What could be better than turning back the clock? We at Skin Deep Medical Center and Body by Bloch are excited to introduce EMFACE. This is the first and only hands-free solution for treating facial skin and muscles in just 20 minutes. No needles, no pain, no downtime. Emface simultaneously emits both synchronized radio frequency and HIFES-brand energies. The homogenous radio frequency heats collagen and elastin fibers while the HIFES stimulation emits thousands of pulses per session to contract delicate facial muscles. The recommended treatment course for the Emface therapy calls for four 20-minute sessions with each session completed 2 to 14 days apart. Clinical studies concluded that participants who completed the recommended treatment course achieved a 37 percent reduction in wrinkles, 30 percent increase in facial muscle tone, and 23 percent lifting effect—with optimal results seen 6 to 12 weeks after the final treatment. HIFES restores and elevates support of facial tissues by selectively contracting muscles and increasing density and quality of muscle structure. Synchronized RF remodels and smoothes skin by heating the dermis and increasing the level of collagen and elastin fibers. You begin to feel tangible results right after the treatments. Positive results are usually reported in 4 to 6 weeks after the last session and continue to improve up to 12 weeks. To see if you are a candidate for this exciting technology schedule a consultation at Skin Deep Medical Spa in Highland Park. Ask about our guarantee.

The Last Word

A Well-Built Life Lake Forest author and architectural historian Arthur H. Miller retraces the long and storied path that led him to the work he does today. words by Sherry Thomas illustration by Tom Bachtell

magine white lines on blue paper—a structural rendering of a life to be influenced by its uncanny, yet serendipitous, exposure to work by some of the world’s greatest architects. Thus was the blueprint that renowned local historic preservation expert and author Arthur H. Miller was destined to follow from childhood in Kalamazoo, Michigan—growing up in a French Provincial home where Frank Lloyd Wright himself had once slept. “My parents bought it from a family that had commissioned Wright to build a new Usonian-type house on a fine bluff top site near town,” says Miller, emeritus Archivist and Librarian for Special Collections at Lake Forest College (LFC) and two-time president of the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation. “Wright had stayed with them during the planning process for the new home.” Miller recalls admiring the distinct housing styles in that area from an early age, even taking jobs working on estate gardens in and near his hometown. “I wrote a senior high school paper on Mr. Wright,” he says, adding that he continued to be intrigued by fine architecture wherever he went—from Kalamazoo to his junior year study abroad program in France and ultimately, Chicago. “At the University of Chicago, though I did not study architecture formally in graduate school, I worked at the Newberry Library—a striking Henry Ives Cobb building—and lived in a Pond & Pond apartment building and at Miesian 900 North Lake Shore Drive.” When he and wife, Janet, moved to Lake Forest in 1972 (both working at LFC) the couple settled into a quaint, Chicago-style bungalow on Wildwood Road, just off campus. He brought his passion for architecture with him. “I visited essentially all the great houses, when books were donated,” says Miller, explaining how he became inspired to begin sharing stories about Lake Forest landmarks while serving as board president for the Ragdale Foundation, the former summer home of architect Howard Van Doren Shaw. “My humanities PhD work of analysis for literature allowed me to look critically at these great houses and their histories and assess their significance.” In researching architectural provenance, Miller began writing about some of the city’s most prominent properties—with publications that include the Classic Country Estates of Lake Forest coffee table tome and the more recent Architectural Lake Forest: A Guide to National Register Historic Districts and Properties in Lake Forest, Illinois. It’s been a decades-long labor of love, one that has helped position Lake Forest’s architectural pedigree on a global scale. “Our architecture by Shaw, Adler, Frost & Granger, Lindeberg, Edwin Hill Clark, Wright, and many others is world class. Outsiders know this well,” says Miller, noting that the Traditional Building Conference’s decision to hold its Spring 2023 national event at the Tudor Revival Deer Path Inn was a “watershed moment” for the city. Today, his mission is to protect that architectural legacy through education, especially as new families move into the community. Whether it’s giving a local history presentation, his work as a Lake Forest Preservation Foundation director, or the articles he writes for its Preservation magazine, Miller is now the unofficial keeper of a different sort of blueprint—one that Shaw himself set forth more than a century ago. 70 FOREST & BLUF F
