APPY NEW YEAR and welcome to the first issue of 2022. I don’t know about you, but I am excited to start a new year. I am always hopeful at this time of the year and look forward to new beginnings and new goals. One of those happen to be to purge and refresh my wardrobe. To help with that, I invite you to turn to My Personal Best, Stylist Choice and Beauty sections to check out a little inspiration from the Spring 2022 runway trends. Another common yet equally important focus of mine is health and staying in physical shape. One of our features, Beauty 101 is about Lake Forest resident Jen Bobay stepping out from behind her makeup brand to teach women the secrets to true beauty. Global Attitude, the second feature of the issue tells the story of Lake Forest resident Molly Melin’s newly published book and how it examines the corporate role in the peace process. Also in this issue is a truly inspirational story about 18-year-old Lelia Purky and how she not only overcame bullying, but has made the decision to use her experience to help others and stand up for herself. In our House & Garden sec-

tion, we get a taste of Paris with the exotic cocktail, French 75, and the mouthwatering 40 cloves of garlic chicken. The perfect combination for a cozy winter night dinner. Finally, this January’s mini fashion spread exudes the celebratory spirit of the New Year with “Let’s Party like it’s 2022” with a ’70s flare. I’d like to thank all of you for the incredibly warm welcome to my role as your editor in chief of Forest & Bluff. I will continue to listen to the community and bring you stories that will inspire and celebrate all that Lake Forest and Lake Bluff represents. Happy New Year and here’s to a fabulous 2022!

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

I

N 1997, the blockbuster movie Titanic brought to life the story of the supposedly unsinkable ship that, alas, sunk. Since 1985, when American oceanographer Robert Bollard sent an unmanned submersible more than two miles below the surface and located the wreckage of the Titanic, the remains of the ship have been a subject of much fascination among scientists, oceanographers, and Titanic enthusiasts. The first expedition to the Titanic in 14 years took place in June and July 2021 and was conducted by OceanGate Expeditions. For the first time, an expedition utilized a submersible—named “Titan”—that transported five people below the surface to capture 4D images of the Titanic. On November 20, the submersible Titan was the center of a one-day experiential exhibition, “Titanic Experience Tour,” at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. Spearheaded by Titan Mission Specialist and Lake Forest Resident David Waud, visitors were able to get up close and personal with the Titan, which sat just outside the Center’s south entrance. “David has been a strong supporter for years and years, been on our board, and been involved as a donor,” says Gorton Center Director of Special Events Ann Wildman. “He had tried to do an expedition for ten years or so and it fell through, he finally was able to go on the expedition this past summer.” Part of OceanGate’s mission is to share the research discovered during its expeditions as well as the adventurous aspect of its work through various exhibits across the country, which led to Waud being able to bring the “Titanic Experience Tour” to Gorton Community Center. During the exhibit visitors were able to meet the crew of the Titan, which included content experts, marine biologists, veteran Titanic divers, and Waud himself. They also viewed never-before-seen footage from the OceanGate Expeditions dives on the Titanic wreck site. They were able to briefly sit in the Titan in groups of five. Veteran diver and Titanic expert PH Nargeolet, and Submersible Pilot and CEO Stockton Rush shared

“We do lots of live entertainment, classes, and films, but never have we brought a real submersible that has literally dove on mission to the Titanic and that’s an amazing thing to be part of.” their experiences descending over 12,800 feet beneath the ocean’s surface with expedition teams, surveying the current state of the wreck and debris field and capturing discoveries with photos, 4k videos, and sonar technology. Gorton Community Center’s mission is to be the gathering place in the heart of the community where people connect, converse, learn, listen, play, and perform, so the Titan exhibit was right in its wheelhouse. “It made a lot of sense for us to do it and it was another medium in which to explore science as well,” Wildman says. “Expeditions alone are interesting, but if someone was looking to curate a trip it kind of creates awareness around that.” Wildman says attendance was exceptional and the exhibit was nearly sold out. “I would say that this is one of our more successful events,” she says. “The good thing is that it’s different than anything we’ve ever done. We do lots of live entertainment, classes, and films, but never have we brought a real submersible that has literally dove on mission to the Titanic and that’s an amazing thing to be part of.” For more information about Gorton Community Center visit gortoncenter.org. VISIBLE Lake Forest’s Lelia Purky won’t let others define her narrative. In fact, she’s writing it and performing it herself.

words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Robin Subar

HEN LELIA PURKY was 18 months old, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP), a condition that often makes introductions for her before she ever says a word. “I know I move differently than others, but I don’t want people to just see that,” says the 23-year-old art and history enthusiast. “I want people to see me before they see my disability.” CP is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. When Lelia failed to hit certain milestones as an infant, her mother Anne pushed doctors to determine why. “Once we knew it was CP, we had a diagnosis we could work with,” Anne says. “And my husband and I were fortunate to have the resources to help find the interventions Lelia needed to make her stronger.” But it often wasn’t the physical challenges that Lelia faced that were the hardest, it was the social and emotional ones she encountered when she got to school that were tough. “I remember being in second or third grade and having a boy bully me,” she remembers. “I was called names. I was shoved into a fence. The school did what they had to to protect me, but you never forget those things.” When it came time for Lelia to go to middle school, she transferred to The Cove School in Northbrook. There she was able to form the genuine friendships she

longed for. “Cove was a very special place for me,” she says. “I feel like the people there could see beyond how I walked.” Lelia was a regular fixture in the school’s theater program—often grabbing a leading role in their annual performances. During her ninth-grade year at Cove, Lelia’s parents encouraged her to try a class at Lake Forest High School. “I was so scared, a little like being thrown into the frying pan,” she says. “I took a ceramics class, made all of these lovely pieces, and the teacher liked me. “One day I met this nice girl, but I realized she was kind of talking to me like a puppy. I didn’t think much of it at first. I just wanted to try and give her a chance. But when I saw her talking with her other friends, she had a totally different voice. “I went home that day and cried and told my mom that I didn’t want to go back. Of course, she told me that I could drop the class, but something inside of me snapped and I was like no. I’m not going to let someone else take my joy. If I drop out, she wins. So, I went back and just did my thing. I did end up making some friends. This was my triumph to be visible to the regular world.” It was this very triumph that Lelia wrote about and then went on to perform in two different venues in Chicago. It was called “Invisible.” FO REST & BLUFF 31

“I think people really saw this situation through my eyes,” she says. “What it’s like to be invisible and then to one day decide you’re not going to live that way any more. It was a performance that shocked everyone and brought them to tears and a standing ovation.” Even Lelia’s mother was moved by her spirit. “Lelia has always found the person that was the least understood, or the most abandoned, and try to draw them out,” Anne explains. Before Covid, Lelia was taking classes at John A. Logan College in Carbondale. As part of her studies, she had an internship at a specialized adult rehabilitation center. “The center was supposed to be a place where adults with special needs could come and read books or play games,” Lelia says. “The center didn’t have many things for its clients so I would bring some things from home.” There was one young woman that Lelia would read to every week. She was non-verbal and didn’t give Lelia any clues that she was getting much from their interactions. When Lelia’s internship was over and she was making her way through the center saying goodbyes, including the one woman she had faithfully been reading to, she was taken by surprise.

“This woman who had never shown me any kind of emotion or response stood up out of her chair and gave me the biggest hug,” Lelia says. “I’m smiling so much remembering it.” The center gave Lelia an award for her work for clearly reaching their clients in the most impactful way. Lelia’s heart is much bigger than her immediate surroundings, as exemplified in a family she met from the Philippines over Facebook. “There was this young mother who was desperate to find a special formula for her baby,” she says. “It was the only kind her baby could tolerate.” Lelia ended up selling several paintings she had made in order to raise money to purchase the baby’s formula. “Just when I was starting to lose hope that the formula would get to them in time, I woke up to pictures from this family with the formula near the baby,” she says. Lelia hopes to one day meet this family in person. She also dreams that someday having a disability like CP will no longer be a factor in how people see her. “My hope is that one day, maybe in 2040, people will see kindness before they see anything else,” Lelia says. With Lelia leading the charge and setting the example, that someday may come sooner than she thinks.

LIFE’S GREATEST IRONY AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Bachtell

L

IFE’S GREATEST IRONY is that when we are young, arrogant, and know everything, we don’t bother asking hoary, existential questions. This is probably because we are preoccupied with chasing dreams, gulping our way through bottomless mimosa brunches, and falling in love with the wrong people. By the time we actually get to an age where we know a thing or two, we realize we don’t know much at all. We’re still the same shrimp-shaped girl we’ve always been. Only now we have no idea where we put our glasses. At our age, we’ve been through it. We’ve mended broken hearts. We’ve grieved losses. We’ve been blindsided by fate and amassed enough parking tickets to know nothing about life makes much sense. If it hasn’t already swallowed us whole, cynicism is quite possibly nipping at our ankles. Our Dewy Ideals Of Youth were tossed out years ago to make room for air fryers and smoothie makers. Perhaps you are one of the lucky few who arrived at the doorstep of 2022 unscathed by life and circumstances. If this is the case, you should most certainly light a fire, pour yourself an adult beverage, and bask in the glow of your brilliance. Leave the rest of us to hatch a plan for the new year. I’m not a fan of resolutions; too many people hit the skids by February. I much prefer adopting a loose philosophy on life. The Buddhists know a thing or two about life. So does Plato. Bob Dylan works for me. Keep in mind you can read all the books, do all the yoga, think all the right thoughts and, even if you are very clever, you still may find you haven’t a clue about life. That’s okay. We are all fumbling through. What little I know about life is this: vulnerability, fragility, and fear are human conditions, not flaws. Feel free to admit you suffer from being human. No one will think less of you, no one will shriek in terror. In fact, most people will sigh with relief. Why waste life pretending to be perfect and impenetrable?

Life isn’t a competition, though it feels like that somehow, especially in our bubble. I’ve been coaching young people and adults for well over a decade. People honor me with sneak peeks into their souls. Trust me when I say the whole lot of us, even the picture perfect types, are exhausted from competing and trying to keep up. Life isn’t about outdoing other people or competing for imaginary titles like ‘Skinniest’, or ‘Most Social Media Worthy Lifestyle’. The happiest among us compete only with themselves. Honor the small things. You may not have won the Nobel Peace Prize, ended world hunger, or discovered a self-sealing cereal bag, but you can go for a walk with a friend who is approaching rock bottom at break neck speed. You can respond with kindness even when every fiber of your being wants to rage. You can listen. Don’t dismiss these simple powers. It is no small thing to make another human feel heard, valued, and supported. You won’t please everyone. For the serial pleasers among us, those who depend on feedback for proof of their worthiness, it is hard to fathom the feeling of freedom that comes from detaching from criticism and praise. Unhook from criticism and praise and you’ll find it much easier to be comfortable in your own skin. Lastly, to quote Bob Dylan, ‘Be groovy or leave.’ Personal boundaries are wildly healthy. Stop tolerating so darn much. Tolerating is a soul suck. Wishing you a happy, healthy 2022! To be in touch, check out T-Ann’s websites: t-annpierce.com and theconfidencetriangle.com. WEALTH MANAGEMENT

BOUTIQUE APPROACH

When it comes to wealth management, Steven Esposito of Morgan Stanley brings more than three decades of experience and a track record for curating custom portfolios for his clients. words by Sherry Thomas

I

F STEVEN ESPOSITO has learned anything in his more than 37 years of managing high net worth portfolios, it’s to never panic. Esposito started in the wealth management business in 1983 and has experienced five market crashes and now, a pandemic. “It’s never boring,” he says. The one piece of advice he shares with his clients is that wealth management is not about finding the next hot stock. Rather, it’s about risk management. “An investor can never eliminate risk; they can only mitigate it,” explains Esposito, Executive Director, Senior Portfolio Management Director, and Wealth Advisor for Morgan Stanley. “If your family wealth is properly allocated, market turbulence is an opportunity and not a crisis.” The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley brings a boutique approach to wealth management—one that assists long-time customers with everything from estate planning strategies and portfolio management to retirement planning, trusts, and philanthropy. Esposito knows from experience that portfolios continually evolve as the years progress. “I remember a long time ago, a very wealthy client said to me: ‘I’m already rich; don’t make me poor’,” he says. “I never forgot that comment and it’s a cornerstone of what we do at the Lake Forest Group. We have had two severe stock market crashes in the last 11 years, and if investors haven’t learned how to properly balance their assets in that time, they never will.” Esposito and his team pride themselves on a very personal, boutique approach. “We don’t do cookie cutter portfolios, or create portfolios via a software program,” he says. “Every portfolio is managed independently and uniquely, along with some good old fashioned wealth management—all while benefiting from the global financial resources of Morgan Stanley. It’s the best of both worlds.” Esposito’s advice has been sought out by major media organizations, including WGN TV and radio; WBBM’s “Noon Business Hour”; WIND radio; Fox News; ABC-7 News; CBS News; NBC News; the Chicago Tribune; Chicago Sun-Times; and Crain’s Chicago Business. The Lake Forest Group has approximately 175 households under their management as of April 15, 2021, the vast majority who have worked with Esposito for 12 years or more—including some who’ve

38 36

been with him for more than 30 years. It’s no wonder then that he has made Forbes magazine’s “Best in State” wealth manager’s award every year he entered. “It’s a very personal operation here in downtown Lake Forest. We emphasize personal attention, number one. I’m like the family CFO in addition to the asset management, we discuss the trusts, wills, etcetera. You have to review everything,” says Esposito. “Morgan Stanley is one of the premier global managers on the planet right now and the resources of this firm are incredible.” Navigating financial markets has become more complex than ever and last year’s pandemic threw in a wild card that no one could have seen coming. “That’s when you need a seasoned veteran on your side. I’ve learned from nearly four decades of experience—not from a textbook or TV— when to deploy capital. Deploying capital at the scariest moments and liquidating during market euphoria is the most difficult thing to get people to do,” he explains. “My responsibility as a wealth manager is to protect your family’s wealth first. We do our best to calculate our client’s risk tolerance—along with their needs, desires, and investment goals for their families and future generations.” Esposito’s minimum account size is $1.5 million. The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley is located at 207 E. Westminster Avenue, Suite 300, in Lake Forest. For more information, call 847-604- 7321 or email steven.esposito@morganstanley.com. HEN JAMES BEARD first whipped this up for Julia Child, he included matchstick-sliced carrot and slivered onion in the dish as we’ve done here. What we took out was half of the olive oil and all of the chicken skin. You won’t miss it! We’ve also browned the chicken to add color before the long oven roast. The result is wonderfully rich and deeply flavorful. Serve the finished dish straight out of the Dutch oven, or, spoon all onto a platter. To save guests the trouble of plucking out the roast garlic cloves to squeeze and spread on crusty bread, we pull out about half of the cloves after baking, remove the skins and put the soft little dollops in a little crock to serve alongside the bread and chicken. Ingredients • 1/3 cup olive oil • 8 chicken drumsticks, skin removed • 6 chicken thighs, skin removed • 4 celery ribs, sliced into thin strips, and then cut into matchsticks • 1 large carrot, peeled and cut into matchsticks • 1 large yellow onion, peeled, cored and cut into slivers • 40 cloves of garlic, unpeeled (about three full heads) • 2 tsp. each fresh tarragon leaves and thyme leaves OR 1 tsp each, dried • 2 tsp. salt • 1 tsp freshly cracked pepper • A few gratings of a whole nutmeg OR ¼ tsp. ground • ½ cup extra dry vermouth • 2 Tbsp brandy Method Place oven rack at center position. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Toss skinless chicken pieces in ½ of the oil in a 6-quart Dutch oven. Brown chicken over medium heat on your stove top. Remove from heat. Stir in onion, carrot and celery matchsticks. Sprinkle with tarragon, thyme, salt and pepper. Tuck garlic cloves throughout the pan. Drizzle with remaining olive oil, vermouth and brandy. Cover Dutch oven and bake for 90 minutes. Serve piping hot with crusty bread to soak up the pan juices. Is there a recipe you’re dying to have? E-mail us at thedish@jwcmedia.com and we’ll start digging.

BEAUTY 101 Jen Bobay steps out from behind her makeup brand to teach women of all ages the secrets to true beauty in the new year. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Robin Subar

T

HE NORTH SHORE’S Jen Bobay has always had a connection to the beauty world, first through her grandmother who was a hairdresser in the city and then as a teacher who applied her love of science to ingredient combinations that she learned helped her skin. “I fell in love with makeup and skincare and was trained by a line that I loved and believed in,” Bobay remembers. “But nearly every product I tried irritated my skin.” It wasn’t until after Bobay gave birth to her son Nicholas and was looking for an opportunity where she could work and still make him a priority that she decided to create her own mindful line of makeup. Bobay founded Jar Bar Makeup, a complete mineral makeup line that is free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and talc. “When I first decided to launch my company, I thought my business would be more education about makeup application—teaching my friends and their daughters how to use makeup and what was in their products,” she explains. “It was somewhat of an accident that we ended up marketing the makeup itself.” Like any new business owner, Bobay found “shiny pennies” everywhere she looked, opportunities that sounded good on paper but maybe didn’t make sense for where she was at the moment. “Many friends and clients wanted Jar Bar to offer more products and initially I wanted to please and would try and be everything to everyone,” she says. “Around year two, I knew that I needed to refocus. It was time

“The hardest days won’t be cured by a great lipstick, but they sure can be made better.”

to take a step back and get some advice.” Bobay’s cousin encouraged her to join an entrepreneurial club and she came across a newly formed one at The Lake Forest Shop. “The day I went to my first meeting was a moment in time,” she says. “When I met Ellen Stirling, I found a wonderful mentor that taught me the art of balance between running a business and maintaining your priorities for your clients and your family.” Bobay began by introducing her products through a series of trunk shows and learned that a glow palette she carried was a hit. “We don’t carry my entire line at The Lake Forest Shop. We’ve customized what we offer to clients of The Lake Forest Shop,” says Bobay. Bobay credits much of her success to the collaborative network of women in her corner. “Ellen Stirling has been an incredible role model to me,” she adds. “And along the way, my mother, husband, son, and several friends have stepped in and helped me with many things from campaigns to photographs for my website. Working with others has been my favorite part of creating Jar Bar. My grandmother used to listen to women share their problems when she would be styling them. And when they would ask for advice, she lifted people up with the art of beauty. There is something therapeutic beneath the surface of the beauty industry. The hardest days won’t be cured by a great lipstick, but they sure can be made better.”

Bobay believes today that her calling is bigger than selling makeup. So, she’s tapping into her science teacher toolbox to teach women of all ages the meditative powers of a good beauty regimen. Jar Bar will always be a part of Bobay, but educating clients on how to be their own makeup artist now will be the focus of her one-onone sessions at the Lake Forest Shop. “I’ve really gone back to where I started with Jar Bar and it’s been in the last 18 months of dealing with Covid and its repercussions that have helped me get there,” she says. Bobay, who is an educator by nature, has been teaching since 1995 and most recently had the joy of teaching at both the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest and St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette. “I love being a teacher,” she says. “There is something about building up others through what you teach them that is so rewarding. I see it every day with my classroom of students and the teachers I work alongside with. Now I want to be able to create this same type of change and empower women through what I know about makeup and beauty.” Bobay believes that makeup and skincare—regardless of the brand you use—can be a meditative ritual. To this end, she shares 10 ideas for you to add to your beauty routine in 2022. 1. Use a gentle non-foaming cleanser as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed at night. This will change your skin over time for the better. 2. When you cleanse your skin at night, use a clean washcloth to help exfoliate your skin. Always use a fresh washcloth. (Expert tip: The cheap washcloths that aren’t super plush are the best for this.) 3. If you are concerned about blocking pores, the best

foundation is a loose mineral powder. If you apply it with a plush kabuki brush, it goes on flawlessly. Jar Bar’s loose powders offer buildable coverage that let the skin breathe. 4. Always use a little under-eye concealer with your foundation. 5. If you look tired, use an eye primer all over your lid to instantly brighten any shadows, darkness, or veins. Many women who feel their eyes look tired are amazed at what an eye primer can do. 6. Use a powder blush and a cream blush for staying power and glow. Jar Bar’s Cheek and Lip Tints were inspired by Bobay’s grandmother who always wore a cream blush. 7. The eyes require a few brushes to finish properly—an all over shadow brush, a tiny plush brush to soften any liner, and a brow brush. 8. Fill your brows with a natural brow gel. Brows frame the face. 9. The perfect lip shade is always two colors mixed together that create your natural lip color just two shades darker. 10. Finish your look with a touch of lip gloss in the center of your bottom lip. “Beauty routines are important as long as they support you in being the best version of yourself,” Bobay says. “Little changes can lead to big rewards. I especially love starting habits like these at the beginning of a new year.” To learn more about Bobay and her brand Jar Bar Makeup, visit jarbarmakeup.com. GLOBAL ATTITUDE Professor Molly Melin’s newly published book examines the corporate role in the peace process. words by Rochelle Newman Rubinoff photography by Monica Kass Rogers hair & makeup by Cathleen Healy of Distinct Artists style direction Theresa De Maria

W

HILE MOLLY MELIN did not grow up in Lake Forest, she is definitely making her adopted home town proud. With the release of her first book, The Building and Breaking of Peace: Corporate Activities in Civil War Prevention and Resolution, Melin has accomplished a bucket list goal that many strive for, but few achieve. Melin teaches political science and international relations at Loyola University Chicago and was able to find ways to incorporate working on the book into her teaching. “I ran study abroad programs in the places where I was doing field work. It has been a way to bring together my teaching and research,” Melin says. This field work covered case studies in Colombia, Northern Ireland, and Tunisia. “It was pretty awesome,” Melin says. “We traveled to Colombia as a family several times, so I was somewhat familiar with the background. But Tunisia and Northern Ireland I had to learn about from scratch.” She is quick to say that she truly would not be able

to do any of this without the extreme support of her husband, Phillipe, and her children, Charlie and Maizy, who are in 8th and 5th grades at Deerpath Middle School. In fact, she was in Tunisia, doing field work and enjoying gorgeous 75 degree days, when her family was home during the polar vortex. That took an extraordinary amount of understanding on their part! Melin jokes that while many of their kids’ friends would go to places like the Caribbean for spring break, she’d come home and say, “Guess what, we’re going to Belfast.” “Each country has an interesting history of corporate involvement in different ways. In Tunisia, they have a really strong union structure. And it was really the unions that prevented the Jasmine Revolution from becoming violent,” Melin says. “They have really powerful unions and societal leaders that made sure that the Arab spring in Tunisia was peaceful.” “Ireland is not really a case where domestically headquartered companies were proactive in preventing bombings. Most of the companies there are Royalists and seen as British Colonialists and they weren’t that interested in the peace process. It was actually the U.S.

who became involved, passing legislation requiring any American companies operating in Ireland to engage in fair hiring practices.” “In Colombia, the puzzle that got me thinking of this project, they have a really active private sector that was engaged in the peace process in a really overt way.” Melin says that even the cosmetic companies had things they were marketing to promote peace, including colors like peaceful pastels. Or beer caps that said, “I believe in peace.” “They had a strong group of 100 companies that came together and had a peace marketing campaign.” Melin’s dissertation researched countries’ roles in international conflict management. She then became interested in how it’s in the interest of the private sector to promote peace and stability. “Broadly, people don’t talk about how the private sector acts as political actors; I felt there was a missing piece in the academic political science world. They weren’t thinking about corporate responsibility. I tried to make the book accessible to people not just in the academic world.” The book, from Oxford University Press, is available through The Lake Forest Book Store and Amazon. According to the Lake Forest Book Store’s web site, the book examines how “private corporations are rarely discussed as playing a role in efforts to curb civil violence, even though they often have strong interests in maintaining stability. In The Building and Breaking of Peace, Molly M. Melin develops a theory of the conflicting roles corporations play in both building and preventing peace.” She is originally from Georgia and

Phillipe is from California. Melin says they love being a part of the Lake Forest community. “Lake Forest reminds me of the town I grew up in; it feels so familiar,” she says, “other than the winters!” “It was so easy for us to get a great group of friends here and we have a real neighborly neighborhood. Everybody is friendly and we have block parties and book clubs.” One of the side benefits of the book coming out is that Melin’s friends now “kind of know what I do. I’ve been doing research all of my career. The assumption is if I’m not physically in a class, I’m not working. And the reality of my job is 40% teaching. I feel like I now have a greater understanding of what my job entails amongst my friends.” Melin says, “I love teaching as well: I get to see the outcomes from my teaching in such an important way: I’m actually having an effect on the students and can see it more immediately than research allows. In research, I can work for 5 years on an article and not know if it really changes the academic conversations around that topic. In teaching, I see students fall in love with political science and understand the complexities of global politics in just a few short months!” And while she has found the process of publishing her first book very fulfilling, Melin also says, “Writing is a strange process (and I’d imagine this is true for any author) in that you can work all day on something and have very little “product” to show for it. There are some days, in which it clicks, and you figure out a piece of the puzzle you’re working on. With the book, the puzzle was so big it sometimes felt overwhelming to try and tackle. Other days, I would read something or see the data in a new way and things would fall into place. It was really gratifying to do the hard part and see the pieces come together.”

BREATHTAKING DEBUT

Luxury seating in lobby

Tribune Tower Residences, an iconic luxury condo development in the famous former headquarters of the Chicago Tribune, welcomed its first residents last year to rave reviews. With more than 50 percent sold by late November, the Gothic Revival landmark has been reinvented for a living experience unlike any other. words by Sherry Thomas

M

ORE THAN A CENTURY ago, architect Daniel Burnham was famously quoted saying that Chicago should “make no little plans.” However, the second part of that oft-cited speech might be said again today after walking through the newly completed renovation and restoration of a Gothic Revival landmark built almost a century ago as headquarters for the Chicago Tribune. “Make big plans,” Burnham said when revealing his 1909 Plan of Chicago. “Aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing.” Like many of the grand buildings from the gilded age of the daily newspaper, the next iteration of this icon was yet to be real-

ized when Chicago Tribune offices moved to a smaller location in the city. Designed as part of a 1922 architecture competition to rival the most famous buildings in the world, a Chicago icon that could have been forever lost has been reborn as the Tribune Tower Residences. Anyone who’s been fortunate enough to tour this stunning luxury lifestyle condo community would agree that the result is beyond anyone’s expectations—even those who were on site throughout the process. “Every time I step onto the Crown Terrace, it takes my breath away with its soaring flying buttresses and spectacular views of the city. There is simply nothing like it!” says Sales Director Jeanne Martini of the outdoor terrace within the building’s iconic

“crown,” an homage to the 13th century Butter Tower of Notre Dame Cathedral in Rouen, France. “From the Illinois lobby, walking through the commissioned art-filled corridor to the Michigan Avenue lobby to the fitness and spa floor to the 7th floor awesome pool and its sun deck, I am constantly amazed at the beauty and luxury around every corner. It’s great to see the reaction when we walk people from the Illinois lobby to the historic Michigan Avenue lobby, they are just wowed.” The historic Michigan Avenue lobby preserves the essence of the original building, with quotes etched on the walls when the landmark was erected almost 100 years ago. “All of the quotes have lighting on them that really accentuates the beauty, and the lobby is decorated with a beautiful seating area,” she adds. “The spa and fitness area are also beautiful and the pool with the sundeck where the Chicago Tribune sign is located is truly spectacular.” Located at the intersection of the Magnificent Mile and Chicago River, Tribune Tower Residences offer 162 luxury condominiums with over 56 distinctive one to four-plus bedroom floor plans priced from the $900,000s to more than $7 million. The first residents closed on their units and moved in last summer and by late November, the building was more than 50 percent sold. Martini said sales have been good since the beginning, but once prospective buyers could walk through and see the models and amenities in person, the response has been overwhelming. “Now that they can fully experience our offering and see decorated models, as well as being in arguably the best location in the city, we expect to continue having great sales success,” she adds. “Who wouldn’t want to own a place in iconic Chicago history? It truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity!” More than 50,000 square feet of lifestyle amenities are now open to residents, including a luxury spa with steam rooms, saunas, private treatment room, state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool, driving range simulator, co-working lounge, meeting rooms, entertainment areas, and event spaces complete with a bar and catering kitchen. A third-floor courtyard opens to a sprawling private outdoor oasis—a rare luxury in the city. The pool terrace with outdoor grilling stations and sun deck is a stunning way to spend an afternoon and evening. Far above it all, residents take in panoramic views and beautifully

framed sunrises and sunsets from the incomparable Crown Terrace and Lounge Amenity. With indoor chef ’s kitchen, outdoor grilling and fresh herb garden, the 25th floor Crown terrace offers an intimate setting surrounded by the stunning flying buttresses and elegant tracery iconic to Chicago’s skyline. In addition to a 24-hour door staff and personnel, the building offers residents concierge personal coordination services such as travel assistance, on-site car wash, dry cleaning pickup and delivery, and even grocery delivery to your front door. “Life at Tribune Tower Residences is like living in a Five-Star hotel,” says Martini. “We have already held a couple of SubZero Wolf events with one of their corporate chefs demonstrating the residents’ high-end appliances along with serving gourmet hors d’oeuvres and dinner.” Reflecting on how far the project has come and the outpouring of praise from everyone from architects to agents to buyers, Martini says it is so gratifying to see the exceptionally beautiful end result. “Feedback is that the transformation is above and beyond what anyone imagined. All the details, finishes, amenities, and residences have lived up to the stunning architecture and prominence that is the iconic Tribune Tower,” she says. “It is wonderful to know that the transformation of Tribune Tower is befitting of this magnificent icon. The expectations were already high. To think that these were not only accomplished but exceeded says a lot.” The Tribune Tower Residences Sales Gallery is located on the 28th floor of at 401 N. Michigan Avenue in Chicago. For an appointment, call 312-967-3700 or visit tribunetower.com. FO REST & BLUFF 75

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE VASER 4-D HI DEFINITION LIPOSCULPTURE PLUS RENUVION words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

iposuction has been in existence for close to 30 years. It continues to be refined and improved. Two years ago I discussed HiDefinition Liposculpture. Since that time I’ve performed hundreds of procedures. Results have been excellent with significant improvement over past procedures. It has become a true art form where the underlying anatomy is contoured, sculpted, and enhanced. Like every procedure, over time one realizes that there are some limitations. The single biggest limitation in achieving the desired result is the status of the overlying skin. More specifically the level of the skin’s elasticity. In the younger patient where the skin tone is better, results are more predictable and consistent. In the older patient, if there is significant laxity of skin, the procedure may be combined with skin reduction or excision. It is that middle group of patients who present the most challenge. Obviously, most patients want the best results with the least invasive method. For this group, I’m now combining Vaser Hi-Definition Liposculpture to contour and sculpt the body with a minimally invasive treatment called Renuvion. Renuvion is a cosmetic technology combining the unique properties of the helium plasma with a proprietary form of radiofrequency energy. The trick is always to sufficiently heat up the deeper tissues to promote collagen tightening and elasticity without burning the overlying skin. Renuvion has a very shallow depth of penetration. It has a dual thermal effect where it provides unique heating with nearinstantaneous tissue cooling. The delivery of energy beneath the skin and thru the helium plasma allows 360-degree energy application to all desired tissues in the subdermal space. The fibroseptal network beneath the skin can be effectively heated to promote contraction and tightening of the overlying skin. The full effect of this treatment can take up to six months to see. So basically, tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated and Vaser ultrasound is introduced to emulsify the fat. Liposuction is performed if need be and the Renuvion is introduced to promote skin tightening. To see if you are a candidate for this procedure a consultation and an exam are required. As with any surgical procedure risks and possible complications will be discussed.

DIGITAL DIVE INTO LAKE BLUFF HISTORY 210 East Center in Lake Bluff

AKE BLUFF History Museum has created a digital tour, “Lake Bluff Then & Now,” that documents the village’s residential heritage. If you’ve ever wanted to see what the village of Lake Bluff and its neighborhoods looked like as it was being established, it’s now possible to see how the streetscape has changed over time. The Lake Bluff Walking Tours app, available for free in app stores, features 11 different walking tours, the latest of which is “Lake Bluff Then & Now.” Much of what is now east Lake Bluff was envisioned in 1875 by the founders of the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association. Methodist ministers and Chicago businessmen established this religious meeting site and summer resort on 100 acres of land purchased from early settlers. Summer cottages and country homes were gradually built on Association property and nearby land during the 25 years that the Camp Meeting Association was active and into the early part of the 20th century. Many of the structures were later turned into year-round dwellings, and many of those homes are still standing

today, while quite a few have been demolished or significantly remodeled. “Lake Bluff Then and Now” includes photos of more than 200 homes that have been lost to time. The tour documents changes street by street, enabling users to “walk” the streets of old Lake Bluff and “view” homes that date from 1875 to roughly 1925. The app was created by Lake Bluff History Museum volunteers and sponsored by Abbott in honor of the Village’s 125th anniversary in 2020. For more information, visit lakebluffhistory.org.
