ESCAPE PLAN

ELCOME to your July issue! Summer is in full swing, and hopefully you are soaking up each of these sunny warm days. My family and I are excitedly planning our seasonal vacations to our island up in Canada for some fishing and then out to the East Coast visiting old friends in Nantucket. July has always been my very favorite month of the year. There are so many fun outdoor activities, the garden is starting to produce some beautiful vegetables, and we can enjoy our beautiful Lake Michigan beachfront. This month’s issue celebrates family, travel, and philanthropy through teamwork. In the past, luxury travel to Costa Rica was a bit of an oxymoron. The lush, natural, untouched beauty of its natural rain and cloud forests has been preserved not only for our enjoyment, but for the health of our planet as well. I was fortunate to join writer and colleague Kemmie Ryan for four delightful days at Auberge’s Hacienda AltaGracia luxury resort last month where we hiked and explored the country’s natural beauty by horseback in the mountain range cloud forest. The property is also host to world reMini Astraea Leather Tote by Cult Gaia, nowned spa, The Well, which takes a holisGradient Round Sunglasses by Chloé, tic approach in every service and offers exnordstrom.com periences such as yoga sound baths, a coffee scrub river bath, and a variety of luxury services. Continuing to other features, did you know that Lake Bluff puts on an incredible wiffle ball tournament each summer to raise funds for a variety of nonprofit organizations? Teams from around the Chicago area have a blast playing this timeless game all while doing something

incredible to better the lives of those with less. I am tempted to sign up and play some ball. Our third feature tells the story of a native Lake Forest couple, their love for classic cars, and how they balance work and busy social schedules to stay close as a family watching their three boys grow up and get ready to leave for college. Heading to the polo matches this summer? Check out my two-page “What to Wear” style feature for the best of summer trends for the polo field and much more. Summer is the best time to entertain in my opinion. Take it outdoors for a warm weather picnic and try the new cocktail creation by Fletcher & Fork (Wendy Franzen, my predecessor’s, new entity)—the Tequila Daisy—while nibbling on Arugula Asian Pear Spiced Nut Salad. Don’t forget to check out Between the Bluffs for some paralyzing laughter. Lake Bluff ’s T-Ann Pierce along with Tom Batchell our famed illustrator, (known for his marvelous contributions to New York magazine) do it again with this month’s satire—to the Grand Canyon and back sgain. Finally, as we approach our country’s anniversary of independence, I hope we can all reflect on how far our land has come in as well as the importance of continuing to work together to make America the safest, most secure country in the world. Wishing you and yours the happiest Fourth of July! All my best,

THE LAKE HOUSE

From now through September, Fairmont Chicago presents a “summer experience” that brings a taste of the great American resort culture to the big city.

“The Lake House” at Fairmont Chicago Photography courtesy of Daniel Kelleghan

A

NYONE WHO GREW UP in the North Shore area knows there is nothing quite like a weekend at the proverbial “lake house.” Whether it’s a stream of endless days spent out on the boat or those barefoot nights at the beachfront bar, these are the things that memories are made of. The event masterminds at Fairmont Chicago (located between Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile) have tapped into that aesthetic with a new “summer experience” meant to capture the magic of lake living. From now through September 9, the hotel will transform its lobby area to emulate the spirit of Chicago summer on the lake. A recent visit to Fairmont’s version of “The Lake House” affirms the project’s mission to be a “thrilling getaway for those who want to experience the adventure of a lake house in the middle of the city.” In other words, it’s all pretty cool. The decked-out “boat house” bar (with delicious culinary offerings, leaning heavily toward seafood, naturally) mixes an urban cocktail lounge vibe with beach shack chic for an outing that’s just pure fun. Expect a creative menu of cocktails and spirit-infused concoctions served in low light with a tropical glow. After enjoying signature bites by William Schultz (who’s dishing up everything from pork ribs

and beef brisket to an easy peel shrimp boil and platter of lobster, mussels, and clams) do not pass “go” (or go home) without advancing to the Fairmont Arcade. P.S. – You’re welcome. After all, when was the last time you got to 1. Play darts 2. Shoot Skee-Ball 3. Defeat your coworker in ping pong 4. Hit putt-putt or 5. Turn a pile of building blocks into a fierce match of Jenga? All in one evening. That and more awaits you at The Lake House this summer. For more information and information about special events, visit fairmontchicago.com/the-lake-house/.

BETWEEN THE BLUFFS

THE BIG BLUE BEAST words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Batchell

U

NLIKE MY FRIENDS who went to dude ranches or cottages every summer, my family cut through large swaths of the United States in our big blue beast of a Dodge conversion van. The mission of our summer vacations was not to relax. The mission was to see all. the. things. We’d squeal up to all points of interest with the kind of urgency you’d expect from a game show contestant frantically grabbing $100 bills blowing in the air. My parents would drive day and night to get to whatever part of the country we were exploring. We’d find a hotel. My parents would sleep while my brother and I ran around the hotel like feral children, pumping quarters into arcade games, swimming without supervision, and breaking into ballrooms. Later, we’d climb back in the van, and drive someplace with a view, like, say, the Grand Canyon. We’d stand in awed silence at its edge, contemplating its impossible vastness and beauty for about ten seconds before my dad barked, “OK everybody. Back in the van.” This went on for weeks. Health and safety were important to my parents so upon the purchase of any car, they immediately tucked those bulky and dangerous seatbelts in between the seats so we didn’t get burned by the scorching-hot metal clips. Without those pesky seatbelts, we could recline fully on the van’s bench seats. I slept through 85 percent of our family vacations, only lifting my head when my parents shouted, “Look! There’s the Rocky Mountains!” or “Wake up! We’re at the L.L. Bean outlet!” I saw most of the United States from the back of the big blue beastly van barring Washington D.C. (“too many crooks,” my dad said) and Florida (“too many tourists”). During the Carter administration, my parents had a

second gas tank installed on the big blue beast so we could drive a zillion miles without stopping for gas. This meant one bathroom break every zillion miles. No chance my dad was about to stop for a bathroom break after he just overtook all those trucks on the highway. Instead, I was encouraged to use my very own empty glass peanut butter jar. I am not making this up. I bet today if I was in the backseat of a car flying 80 mph down a dusty highway, with a Willie Nelson 8-track tape playing at full volume, I could still maintain 100 percent accuracy using a peanut butter jar. Add this to the long list of skills I have that do not produce income. I’ve heard it said that flying is the second greatest thrill known to man; landing is the first. Family vacations are similar. Vacations are wonderful, but coming home is like a religious experience. Our sunrises are breathtaking. Our trees are leafy. Our own beds are the best. In the daily chaos of life, we forget how the ordinary act of coming home imprints on our souls and our kids’ souls. With each vacation that comes to an end, with each unloaded car, with each fridge that needs re-filling, and with every mega load of laundry that must be tackled, we reinforce just how safe it feels to come home. This “coming home” feeling is born of blessings and full hearts. Time marches on. In a blink, our kids go off to college and find jobs in other states. Those same kids will have their own families. Our days of exhausting, active parenting will fade. We will have done our job. And, with any luck, our kids will know wherever they are, wherever they go, they can always come back home. STRATEGIC DIVORCE

COLLEGE CONTRIBUTION IN ILLINOIS

As summer approaches and we prepare send our children off to college, there are some considerations to keep in mind.

I

words by Michone J. Riewer and Ann Leone photography by James Gustin

N ILLINOIS, divorcing parents are not usually responsible for the financial support of a child after the child turns 18 or graduates from high school, whichever occurs last. However, there are two major exceptions to this rule: First, parents may be ordered to pay child support for a non-minor child who is disabled (750 ILCS 5/513.5. Second, Parents may be ordered to pay a non-minor child’s Educational Expenses (750 ILCS 5/513). Generally, a parent’s obligation to provide child support ends when the obligation to provide Educational Expenses begins. “Educational Expenses” are defined as including tuition, room and board, book fees, registration, application fees, and other university costs. The definition has also been expanded to include contribution to the non-minor child’s living expenses while at school, their transportation costs, health costs, including insurance premiums for medical, dental, and vision, as well as any other expense the Court finds to be reasonable, within its discretion. The Court has discretion in determining the extent and allocation of financial contribution of the parent to the non-minor child’s college costs. The Court must find the costs to be “fair and reasonable” after considering the following factors: The financial resources of both parents. The standard of living the child would’ve enjoyed had the parents NOT divorced. The financial resources of the child. The child’s academic performance. Any other factor the Court deems relevant. The statute does provide certain limitations on a parent’s obligation to contribute to Educational Expenses for the non-minor child. The 2016 amendment to the statute limited the cost to instate tuition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nonetheless, the Court can deviate from the cost limitation if it finds that a parent has shown a “good cause.” Limitations include terminating a parent’s obligation in the event the non-minor child is no longer enrolled as a full-time student, or is not in good standing with the school. This happens when the non-minor child’s G.P.A. falls below a C average, The parent should be given access to the non-minor child’s academic records. This is a unique aspect of Illinois divorce law as it imposes a financial obligation on divorcing parents that does not exist on parents who do not get divorced. While the constitutionality of

Michone J. Riewar

this differentiation has been challenged on numerous fronts, the Court has consistently held that the obligation is consistent with the expanded role of the Court in the lives of divorced families to enforce the obligations that parents in an “intact” family would likely perform jointly. Remember that if you are considering divorce, are in the process of becoming divorced, or you have already obtained a divorce, you might be entitled to obtain financial support for your collegebound children. THE JOY OF SUMMER

Patio season is back and Sofitel Chicago is ready. We checked out the French hotelier’s Le Terrace and other luxe offerings just in time for all your summertime urban escapades. words by Sherry Thomas photography provided by Sofitel Chicago

Epicurean delights await

flowing curtains that immerses you right in the heart of the Gold Coast action. We were recently invited to experience Le Terrace and the hotel’s recent avant garde renovations. The result was magnifique.

HEN PARIS-BASED Sofitel unveiled its first luxury hotel on Chicago’s Gold Coast in May 2002, it was hailed for its distinctive architecture and uniquely European amenities. Two decades later, Sofitel Chicago continues to set itself apart from its Magnificent Mile neighbors—especially in summertime. While the quintessentially French hotel is noted for its Cafe des Architectes (now shortened to CDA) restaurant and sultry Le Bar cocktail lounge, the place to be this summer is Le Terrace—a swanky patio with

EAT If you’re a fan of the Emily in Paris series on Netflix, you will appreciate the way the Sofitel Chicago marketing team describes its cuisine: “Driven by the inherent romance that comes with our storied French heritage, Chef Taus brings to Sofitel Chicago a gastronomic interpretation of modern sensuality.” That description is so spot on we can’t do better ourselves. Let’s start with Le Terrace, which shares its menu with Le Bar (under Executive Chef Cliff Crawford and Chef de Cuisine Daniel Höfler). When they say it serves “outstanding French contemporary cuisine,” they aren’t kidding. (Never mind the cocktails and mocktails, which are equally Paris-sexy). Among a robust (and inventive) offering of appetizers are the Foie Gras Mousse (with mulled wine, pine nut streusel, and challah bread); the Smoked Salmon Beignets (with dill crema, pickled red onion, and petit herbs); and Braided Escargot (with parsley and garlic butter, and artisan bread). Mains include the Chicken Paillard (with lemon caper buerre noisette, arugula salad, roasted peppers, and olives); a classic Steak Frites (with

house made steak sauce); and Braised Lamb Shank (with brown butternut squash puree, fried sage gremolata, and crispy shallots). For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the macarons—which are so French and so authentic. At the CDA, the flavors are more rustic with influences from throughout the Mediterranean. We enjoyed a leisurely brunch there with gorgeous views of Le Terrace and the bustle of the city. Menu options range from a Comte and Mushroom Quiche (with pear and frisee salad, fresh herbs, and a walnut vinaigrette) to a Bacon, Brie, and Mushroom Omelette (with crimini, maitqake and honshemiji mushrooms, Nueske’s applewood smoked bacon, whipped brie and truffle salt, and herb roasted potatoes). There is also the classic New York steak and eggs on the menu, along with yummy brunch cocktails. STAY While Sofitel Chicago was noted for its chic French style when it opened, all good things must evolve with the times. In addition to the latest offerings at Le Terrace, Sofitel Chicago recently unveiled a Paris glam makeover, courtesy of interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. With warm Beechwood walls, neutral color palettes, and custom-made furniture, even the hotel’s “classic rooms” (located on the 6th through 10th floors, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the bustle on the streets below) are the essence of urban sanctuary. At the other end of the decadence spectrum is the uber luxurious, five-room Presidential Suite. Located on the 32nd floor, this spectacular “penthouse” features a Sofitel Chicago

Le Bar cocktail lounge

bolder color palette, floor-to-ceiling windows, a kingsized feather bed, and Hermès luxury bath products. And if you have a beloved pooch, you’ll be pleased to know that Sofitel Chicago is pet-friendly throughout the property. LOUNGE The Sofitel Chicago lobby is the place where your adventure begins and ends, setting the stage with its rich burgundy fabrics, gorgeous florals, black granite floor, polished African wood, and twin 42-foot mirrors. And if it’s too chilly outside for Le Terrace and you want to recreate the vibe of a trendy Paris lounge, the only place to go from there is Le Bar, located just off the lobby (open 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.). Inspired by the hotel’s iconic architecture, crafted by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier, Le Bar lounge’s design and floor plan features modern lines and bold shapes. Luxurious leather textures and unexpected faux fur throw pillows pair with sleek lines and metal accents for an evening to remember. In addition to a long list of champagne, sparklers, and wines of all varieties, the cocktail list includes such creative concoctions as To The Moon (Patron Silver, Aperol, grapefruit juice, and lime juice); the Banana Old Fashioned (with aged Bacardi, Giffard Banana, Demerara Syrup, and Angostura Cocoa Bitters) and the Cucumber Cooler (The Botanist Gin, St. Germain, lemon juice, simple syrup, and cucumber wheels). There’s even a Seedlip Garden May nonalcoholic offering on the menu with the option for more off-the-menu mocktails. One more detail of note, particularly for those Emily in Paris fans, is the Sofitel Chicago’s attention to all five senses, particularly the nose. From the minute you enter, you’ll notice the subtle fragrance of scented candles. Every luxury hotel needs its signature scent, oui? Sofitel Chicago is located at 20 East Chestnut Street in Chicago, just off the Magnificent Mile. I

F YOU’VE DREAMED OF paradise, you’ve probably dreamed of Costa Rica—Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. Recently we ventured to this Central American destination and stayed at the ultra-luxurious Hacienda AltaGracia, deep in the region’s natural rainforest. After our flight out of O’Hare and landing at the airport in San José, we took a short private charter to the resort’s airstrip and headed for our casita. Once inside, we marveled the immaculate living space designed by New York-based designer Nina Gotlieb. The casita was designed with a neutral color palette and rich textures of wood, stone, and organic fibers, bringing the area’s natural wonders indoors. The property offers 50 spacious one- and two-bedroom casitas on its 180 acres

of property. Each offers stunning views overlooking the lush landscape and rolling hills of the San Isidro Valley. After taking in our accommodations, we headed for one of the two pools. Laying poolside, we once again had a panoramic view of the valley and mountains while sipping cocktails custom made with locally sourced ingredients. Along with the drinks we tried the freshmade guacamole and plantain chips—something we would have the opportunity to make with the chef later in the day. The resort is in the region’s cloud forest, rich with plants, trees, and flowers growing wildly, yet beautifully. It also happens to be located next to one of the world’s “Blue Zones”—an area where locals tend to live much longer than average—something locals are very proud of. The next morning, we took advantage of the team’s expertise, hiking the mountains with our expert guide, Johan. The morning hike took us to the most picturesque waterfall locations where we snapped photos and tested the crystal-clear water—something we would be fully immersed in the next day. Johan was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate

about the landscape—especially the nearly 300 species of birds that crossed our path as we walked the property. We left appreciating nature even more after spending a few hours with him. From there, we continued to the property owner’s outdoor home where we sat down for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast—rice, beans, onions, baked cheese, and caramelized plantains—before heading back. After returning to the resort, we once again took advantage of the infinity pool while snacking on fish tacos and salads, made from the resort’s lush garden. Every morsel of food devoured at the holistic paradise was delicious. Later that evening, we headed for one of the on-site restaurants, Grano, where we indulged in evening festivities with fellow guests and the bartender’s specialty cocktail of the day. Dinner at Grano was something worth raving about. The menu, which changes daily, featured unique delicacies with familiar ingredients. It was easy to like everything. The next day was all about leisure and excitement— something the resort prides itself on. Part of the Hacienda AltaGracia experience is helping guests discover the undiscovered and push themselves just outside of their comfort zone to break new boundaries and encounter both peace and exhilaration. We accomplished just that during our stay. That afternoon, we were escorted to El Rio for a healing river bath. This immersive experience began with a cleansing of the aura, followed by a natural detoxifying coffee scrub before we were fully submerged in the cold, pure river water. We then headed for the natural river bath—a large bath basin filled with river water and heated for five hours in the morning by a large wood-burning fire. The experience was one-of-a-kind and helped us connect with nature—something that is magical in the rainforest. Our dinner that evening was a bit different. Our Compa—a dedicated guest liaison and experience de-

Mercado dining lounge

signer—took us to the Picadero for an immersive dinner and traditional stable show. The meal consisted of the best of land and sea—cooked in overdried coconut leaves on an open-fire and paired perfectly with the Tempranillo suggested by our server. Between courses, we enjoyed the lively Costa Rican horse show and got up close with the horses before retreating to our casita. We continued our adventure with the horses the next morning on a trail ride called Paso de Los Vaqueros through the nearby hills. During the two-hour ride, we found ourselves surrounded by majestic mountains and rode both on-trail and off-trail, thanks to our trusty wrangler. We had the unique opportunity to see Capuchin monkeys in the treetops along the ride (and apparently it was the first time the trailhands saw them on the property as well). Before we began our descent, we could see the full valley with cloud covered mountains up high and lower lying areas where our casita was below. Our guide made sure to point out the property’s coffee farm—which boasts more than 7,000 plants—and Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) trees—the trees that give Chanel No. 5 its signature scent. If you’re looking to learn more about the region’s famous coffee, you’ll

want to ask your Compa for the Sustainable Coffee Production experience. This tour takes you through local coffee plantation, Los Jilgueros, where you’ll see the start-to-finish journey of a deliciously brewed cup of sustainable coffee. The tour is followed by an immersive lesson in various roasts and a tasting, accompanied by a collection of local sweet and savory treats. Upon opening in November 2021, Hacienda AltaGracia joined forces with New York-based brand, THE WELL, to elevate the spa experience for guests while connecting them with Pachamama—Mother Earth. Before we began our treatments, we immersed ourselves in Casa de Aqua—a glass-walled oasis dedicated to purification and relaxation rituals. Each of THE WELL’s time-proven local healing traditions and cutting-edge science offerings include East-meets-West healing therapies, transformative treatments, expert-led health coaching and workshops, and more. We opted for the Advanced Bodywork massage and The Skin Ritual facial treatment. Both treatments left us feeling relaxed and rejuvenated and ready for our next spa experience. We happened to be visiting while one of THE WELL’s Visiting Masters, Darren Austin Hall, a Sound

Healer, Sacred Musician, Spiritual Teacher, and Sage from Toronto, Canada was there. Hall led us through a meditative journey of deep relaxation states through song and use of special instruments. It was the perfect end to our journey at Hacienda AltaGracia, leaving us ready to take on the morning flight home. Our journey home came too soon, as I could have stayed in Costa Rica forever. The local way of life and the culture and traditions that our guides and Compa were able to teach us about were fascinating and nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of home. It’s no wonder many of the experts at Hacienda AltaGracia have lived in the area their entire life and are passionate about it. There is a saying you’ll hear immediately upon landing in Costa Rica and throughout your trip that embodies the way of life—Pura Vida. It translates into “Pure Life,” which perfectly captures the spirit of both Hacienda AltaGracia and the region—something you’ll miss once you leave. WEALTH MANAGEMENT

BOUTIQUE APPROACH

When it comes to wealth management, Steven Esposito of Morgan Stanley brings more than three decades of experience and a track record for curating custom portfolios for his clients. words by Sherry Thomas

I

F STEVEN ESPOSITO has learned anything in his more than 39 years of managing high net worth portfolios, it’s to never panic. Esposito started in the wealth management business in 1983 and has experienced six market crashes and now, a pandemic. That experience has never been more important in the last two years. “It’s never boring,” he says. The one piece of advice he shares with his clients is that wealth management is not about finding the next hot stock. Rather, it’s about risk management. “An investor can never eliminate risk; they can only mitigate it,” explains Esposito, Executive Director, Senior Portfolio Management Director, and Wealth Advisor for Morgan Stanley. “If your family wealth is properly allocated, market turbulence is an opportunity and not a crisis.” Steven brings a boutique approach to wealth management—one that assists long-time customers with everything from estate planning strategies and portfolio management to retirement planning, trusts, and philanthropy. Esposito knows from experience that portfolios continually evolve as the years progress and you have to sometimes think outside the box. “I remember a long time ago, a very wealthy client said to me: ‘I’m already rich; don’t make me poor’,” he says. “I never forgot that comment and it’s a cornerstone of what we do at the Lake Forest Group. We have had three severe stock market crashes in the last 13 years, and if investors haven’t learned how to properly balance their assets in that time, they never will.” Esposito and his team pride themselves on a very personal, boutique approach. “We don’t do cookie cutter portfolios, or create portfolios via a software program,” he says. “Every portfolio is managed independently and uniquely, along with some good old fashioned wealth management. It’s the best of both worlds.” Esposito’s advice has been sought out by major media organizations, including WGN TV and radio; WBBM’s “Noon Business Hour”; WIND radio; Fox News; ABC-7 News; CBS News; NBC News; the Chicago Tribune; Chicago Sun-Times; and Crain’s Chicago Business. The Lake Forest Group has approximately 200 households under their management as of June 01, 2022, the vast majority who have worked with Esposito for 15 years or more—including some who’ve

been with him for more than 30 years. It’s no wonder then that he has made Forbes magazine’s “Best in State” wealth manager’s award every year he entered. “It’s a very personal operation here in downtown Lake Forest. We emphasize personal attention, number one. I’m like the family CFO in addition to the asset management, we discuss the trusts, wills, etcetera. You have to review everything,” says Esposito. Navigating financial markets has become more complex than ever and last year’s pandemic threw in a wild card that no one could have seen coming. “That’s when you need a seasoned veteran on your side. I’ve learned from nearly four decades of experience—not from a textbook or TV—when to deploy capital. Deploying capital at the scariest moments in the market and liquidating during market euphoria is the opposite of what most investors do,” he explains. “My responsibility as a wealth manager is to protect your family’s wealth first. We do our best to calculate our client’s risk tolerance—along with their needs, desires, and investment goals for their families and future generations.” Esposito’s minimum account size is $1 million. The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley is located at 207 E. Westminster Avenue, Suite 300, in Lake Forest. For more information, call 847-604- 7321 or email steven.esposito@morganstanley.com. ET US START BY SAYING that this is a loose recipe (the best kind—yes?). Next of note is that the Spanish word for “daisy” is “margarita.” The classic margarita that you know and love likely evolved from a Tequila Daisy, mixed up for the first time during the mid-1800s. Daisies are a type of cocktail containing a spirit (most often tequila, though the first one recorded contained brandy), citrus juice, a liqueur and/or sweetener, and bubbles. The varieties on record are endless, so feel free to choose what tickles your fancy. I’m itching to try a grapefruit variation, but here I’ve chosen a classic. The only guideline is sticking to the proportions, though I personally advocate for extra bubbles…who wants to melt in the sun? TEQUILA DAISY Serves one • • • • • 1. 2. 3. 4.

1/2 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed 1/2 ounce simple syrup 2 ounces of your favorite reposado tequila (I favor Casamigos) 1/2 ounce dry curaçao, Grand Marnier, or your favorite orange liqueur (I’m crazy over Pierre Ferrand) 1-2 ounces club soda or sparkling water (I make my own with an Aarke) Pour lemon juice, simple syrup, tequila, and orange liqueur into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake for 30 seconds or until your hands are frozen, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass or a lowball glass filled with ice. Top with aforementioned bubbles. Drop in citrus wheels of your choosing and a sprig of mint or basil, if desired.

O SIMPLE TO MAKE, and yet so deeply flavored, this salad is a summer favorite. It’s a toss of baby arugula leaves with juicy Asian pear, the tang of balsamic vinaigrette, creaminess of blue cheese crumbles, and crunch of spiced nuts. Add a fresh baked baguette and you have a beautiful lunch. 2 entrée portions FOR THE SPICED NUTS: • 1/2 cup toasted pecan halves • 2 Tbsp pepitas • 2 Tbsp slivered blanched almonds • 1 tsp brown sugar • 1 tsp butter • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper • 1/2 tsp salt FOR THE BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE: • 1 Tbsp Aceto Balsamico di Modena (aged balsamic vinegar) • 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 Tbsp water • 1 tsp Dijon mustard FOR THE SALAD: • 4 cups baby arugula leaves • 1 Asian pear, peeled, cored, quartered, and sliced into wedges • 2 ounces good quality blue cheese crumbles • Spiced nuts from recipe above Method: MAKE THE SPICED NUTS: In a sauté pan over medium high heat, toast nuts for 1 minute, stirring frequently. Add sugar and butter and continue stirring until melted and nuts are coated. Sprinkle on pepper and salt; keep stirring until sugar darkens. Scoop nuts onto a sheet of parchment paper and cool. MAKE VINAIGRETTE: Combine all ingredients in a lidded jar. Shake well to blend and combine. Set aside. MAKE SALAD: In two entrée-sized serving bowls, divide arugula. Divide the pear slices, tucking half among the arugula in each bowl. Crumble the blue cheese over the salads. Drizzle with balsamic vinaigrette. Break the spiced nuts up and sprinkle over the salads. Serve. Is there a recipe you’re dying to have? E-mail us at thedish@jwcmedia.com and we’ll start digging.

INSPIRED DESIGN From our Kitchen and Bath Experts at KASHIAN BROS

Floors are an underappreciated part of your kitchen style.

L

IKE A lush green lawn, the exquisite beauty of a simple hardwood floor can be breathtaking. The grain, texture, and luster make each floor its own unique masterpiece. Did you know most wood floors can be updated to a whole new style? In fact, a shiny dark wood floor can be transformed into a light-colored one with a matte finish. Imagine the possibilities! Your beautiful, yet slightly dated, wood floors can get a complete make-over. And the good news is it’s an eco friendly process, using products to make children’s toys in Europe, so your children and pets are completely safe. For people who need or want to replace their well-loved floors, there are magnificent options. Start by picking the species of your wood, perhaps a dramatic white oak, a

rustic hickory, or a creamy maple. Then choose from an array of plank cuts, lengths, and widths. The options to infuse your personal style are endless. Those with an artistic flair might personalize their floors with an interesting pattern, like herringbone or parquet. then finish them with a stain that matches a stylish fixture or favorite art piece. There are abundant floor options to make your kitchen shine, including tile, stone, and vinyl. We love them all, but will always have a soft spot for the natural beauty of elegant hardwood. The 10th annual Lake Bluff Charity Wiffle Ball Classic once again promises to showcase more than just carnival-esque pitches and clutch hitting. words by Bill McLean photography by James Gustin

IFFLE BALL PITCHES have defied physics, confounded and tantalized and frozen batters, and often elicited bouts of laughter from all but the bewildered one wielding a plastic bat at the time. “Pitchers are key in Wiffle ball,” Lake Bluff resident Leslie Leonardi says. “Success in Wiffle ball usually comes down to pitching,” says Kauri McKendry, another Lake Bluff denizen. They should know. Leonardi is the wife of Jacopo Leonardi, co-founder (with former Lake Bluff resident and current Bostonian Brandon Monk) of the annual Lake Bluff Charity Wiffle Ball Classic, and the ultracompetitive McKendry—the girls’ frosh-soph tennis coach at Lake Forest High School—has ditched her racket to take whacks at baffling Wiffle pitches in at least seven Classics at Artesian Park. But there are three other components of the Lake Bluff Charity Wiffle Ball Classic that supersede the significance of unleashing perplexing pitches: philanthropy, community, and camaraderie. All three will again be integral facets at the 10th Annual Classic on September 10. The top two teams in each of the men’s and women’s divisions last year split $24,000 and donated the portion (winners gave $8,000, runners-up $4,000) to the charity of their choice. “The Wiffle Ball Classic embodies everything that is

Lake Bluff—a grassroots event that grows year by year because folks keep talking about how fun and wonderful it is,” says Lake Bluff Village Administrator Drew Irvin, a regular participant of a happening that drew five teams in Year 1 and 29 teams and nearly 200 competitors last summer. A total of 71 games were played in 2021. “Lake Bluff people are remarkable,” adds Irvin, village administrator since 2008. “They love having an excuse to get together for something that will support and build our community. They put their heart into events, especially one that shines a light on great causes like this one does, and it shows.” Recipients of Classic funds last year were House of Peace Shelter, Travis Roy Foundation, Feed My Starving Children, and Operation Support Our Troops, Inc. McKendry and her Bluffers teammates topped Pitches Be Crazy in the Women’s Division final last year and then relayed $8,000 to House of Peace, which provides a secure, temporary residence for Latina women and children suffering from domestic violence. “House of Peace was the only shelter of its kind to stay open during the pandemic,” says McKendry, who first heard about the Lake County shelter from LFHS Varsity Girls’ Tennis Coach Denise Murphy, whose netters often serve as volunteers there. “I called the shelter right after we won the championship game and told the woman who answered how much money they’d receive. 6/14/22 8:45 PM

We’re a small town, with a Village Board that finds a way to get behind any event that’s fun and strengthens our community at the same time. “She cried.” Another moving moment in the Classic’s history occurred because of a glitch in a sound system on September 11, 2021, the 20th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. The national anthem was supposed to blare before the Classic’s first pitch. But players and spectators heard … nothing. Until an alert, fearless Tim Moore started to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” a cappella. A few others joined in, followed by many others. Goosebumps surfaced. Goosebumps expanded to goose boulders. “Such a heartwarming, amazing moment,” Leslie Leonardi recalls. “And so Lake Bluff. Anybody who experienced that would tell you, ‘That’s what Lake Bluff is all about.’ I loved how quickly everybody rallied and came together. People who live in Lake Bluff like to have fun and promote community.” Jacopo Leonardi, who was born in Florence, Italy, grew up in Queens, New York, and had a blast each time he played Wiffle ball with friends. Reaching adulthood failed to abate his love for the variation of baseball featuring a perforated, plastic ball and a yellow, plastic bat. Mr. Leonardi and co-founder Monk won the first three Lake Bluff Charity Wiffle Ball Classic men’s titles as members of the team 3 Paisans and a Monk. Boys (sixth-grade and older) later formed teams and became tourney darlings, none more so than the Texas Y’Alls, a squad comprised of Lake Bluff Youth Baseball Association players that made its Classic debut in 2019 and paved the way for more boys teams by stealing the hearts of the crowd. The Texas Y’Alls made it all the way to the men’s final last summer, shortly after returning from their trip to Cooperstown. Names of other teams in the first nine years included Village Idiots, Taters (2021 men’s division champions), Unicorns, and Lady Bombers. Other charities that have been recipients of the combined $160,000 generated since the start of the Classic included Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Orphans of the Storm, Project Beisbol, Fill a Heart 4 Kids, GiGi’s Playhouse, CASA (Court Approved Special Advocates), GLASA (Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association), and Imerman Angels. “Usually at least one player on a team has a connection, in one way or another, to the organization that the team had designated as the charity it would assist with a top-two finish,” says Leslie Leonardi, who no longer competes in the tournament but plays a vital role in organizing the Classic each year. The fee for each team (five to eight players) this summer is $550, with registration opening on August 10 and ending on September 8. A free lunch—catered

by Puck’s Pub—and T-shirt will be provided for each player. All teams will play at least four games. Teams consisting of players from other towns are allowed to register; Lake Forest residents have battled in Classics, as has a team (Dirtbags) from Libertyville that fielded four brothers who double as nephews of Leslie and Jacopo. “We see other communities taking what we’ve done and producing their own charitable tournament,” says Leslie, who grew up in Barrington and attended Knox College in Galesburg. “I’d love to help facilitate that if anyone is interested. We are happy to pass on whatever knowledge and assistance we can to get that started. “Organizing this can be challenging, a bit like wrangling cats, but I love putting it together,” she adds. “There’s no way I could do this alone.” Among her indispensable teammates: Dana Hansen and Anna Thor; Jill Irvin (Drew’s wife), an ace graphic designer; Mike Arvia (back-stop builder); Noah Mach (in charge of setting up the Classic’s nine fields), and countless volunteers who help make the day run smoothly. Drew Irvin, Leonardi notes, happily completes countless pre-Classic tasks to promote the busy—and highly altruistic—event. “Drew,” Leonardi says, “is phenomenal.” So is the Lake Bluff Charity Wiffle Ball Classic. “There’s nothing like the vibe of that day at Artesian Park,” says McKendry, who graduated from Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein and played a slew of sports while growing up in Waukegan. “After I first played Wiffle ball there, I recruited many of my softball teammates to join me. They loved it right away and loved it even more when they realized success would result in a donation to our chosen charity. “I remember thinking, as I looked around during a game one year, ‘This is so Lake Bluffy.’ It ranks right up there with Lake Bluff ’s other fun happenings, like our block parties and parades.” Adds Drew Irvin: “Hats off to Jac and Leslie for what they do to make this the special event it is each year. People, every year, walk by the park, discover all these Wiffle games being played simultaneously and ask, ‘What’s going on here?’ Then they say, ‘This is awesome!’ and sign up to play the next year. “We’re a small town, with a Village Board that finds a way to get behind any event that’s fun and strengthens our community at the same time. There’s no question that our annual Charity Wiffle Ball Classic is a shining example of such an event.” More information about the 10th Annual Lake Bluff Charity Wiffle Classic can be found on Facebook and on Instagram:@lbwiffleball.

ROURKE ALL REVVED UP— ON LIFE

Consummate family man and diehard car buff Rob Rourke—a Lake Forest resident since 2006 and a longtime business consultant—thrives as an everpositive, full-speed-ahead man. words by Bill McLean photography by James Gustin

R

OB ROURKE would spray perfume and deliver immediate compliments to his suddenly aromatic customers as a fragrance counter salesman in his college summer days along the East Coast. Rourke—now 54 years old, a Lake Forest resident since 2006, a father of three sons, and in his 26th year with L.E.K. Consulting—got paid to flash a blinding smile above his resplendent threads and make shoppers feel, and smell, like a million bucks. Rourke, these days, regularly finds himself on the receiving end of compliments, thanks in part to his immaculate, head-yanking, bright-blue car, a 1967 Firebird/Royal Bobcat, a vehicle he’d bought for $2,600 at the age of … 13. It has been restored twice, the second time professionally, and it has rolled for 79,000-plus miles. “I was returning to my car after shopping at Heinen’s Grocery Store in Lake Bluff one day, when I noticed a note on my Firebird’s windshield,” Rourke recalls. “It said, ‘This is the nicest old car I’ve ever seen. I would like to buy it. Please call me at this phone number when you are ready to sell it.’ ” Rourke hasn’t called the scribbler yet. Will never call the scribbler. You don’t part ways with a 55-year-old asset that brings you joy, daily. Simple as that. “Cars have always fascinated me, especially the design element of them,” Rourke says, adding his father, Lake Bluff resident and 80-year-old Norm, was a “car

guy” in Rob’s youth and loaned his son $1,300 to help pay for the Firebird (Rob paid his father back in two years, with a smidge of interest). “The look of a car, in the year it was introduced,” he continues, “often reflects the era. You can look at a car and get a pretty good feel for what was going on in society at the time. I love that connection, that history aspect. Cars change so much, don’t they? My Firebird was made right in the middle of the muscle car wars (1960s-early 1970s). It has a bigger engine than the one the manufacturer put in most of its cars in the ’60s. Its engine is tricked-up; it’s a drag racer, essentially.” Rourke, a year away from competing as a long jumper and 440-yard sprinter for Chelmsford (Massachusetts) High School’s track and field team, and his father were driving to visit Norm’s sister when they spotted a car for sale on the side of a road in New Hampshire. They stopped, got out, and checked out every inch of the ’67 Firebird. “It needed work,” says Rourke, who owns three other classic cars and has displayed his Firebird at “Then & Now” auto shows staged by the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce. “But, right away, I thought it looked cool. “I still think it looks cool.” But Rourke’s love of vintage cars takes a back seat— make that, a trunk seat—to his love for his family. He met this future wife, Christina, on a blind date and proposed to her in a cave in Napa, California, after having arranged for an array of candles to soup-up the moment FO REST & BLUFF 63

and for their guide to halt guiding and disappear for a while. They have three boys: Michael, 21; William, 19; and Andrew, 15. William attends Syracuse University, where Rob earned a degree in business and, during summers, “minored” in spritzing. “I absolutely love spending time with my family,” Rourke says. “My wife keeps me on my toes and has been incredibly supportive of the demands of my career, and what excites me most about our kids is the variety of their interests.” Michael achieved Eagle Scout status four years ago. He built a 60-foot bridge for walkers in Middlefork Farms in Lake Forest for his Eagle Scout project, because walking paths would get flooded every spring. Michael consulted contractors and other professionals before tackling the endeavor. Michael’s proudest, loudest cheerleader in Lake County? Rob Rourke, by a few country miles. William focuses on athletics, has an interest in hunting, and, like his father back in the day, is entrepreneurial. (Rob, while growing up outside Boston, was a paperboy, an employee in a regional distribution office of The Boston Globe, a pizza man, and a floral delivery boy, before getting deployed behind that perfume counter). Andrew is into academics and fitness. He also had a lot to do with triggering a family holiday tradition 10 years ago. Rob, an avid cook, made a bouillabaisse for the Rourkes on Christmas Eve in 2011. A five-year-old Andrew couldn’t consume enough of it and probably considered leaving a small bowl of it for Santa before changing his mind seconds later. Since then, usually around the day after Thanks-

giving, Andrew starts to look forward to inhaling the hearty stew on Christmas Eve. Rob Rourke kicked off his consulting career with a position at Andersen Consulting in Hartford, Connecticut; he also worked for Andersen at its Boston office, before leaving the firm to complete the one-year program at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management in 1996. L.E.K. Consulting—an international consulting firm, which was founded in London in 1983 and opened its Chicago office in 1993, focuses primarily on growth strategy and mergers and acquisitions—hired Rourke as a consultant in 1996. He served as an L.E.K. manager in Chicago from 1998-2001, and has been a Partner since 2002. He is currently Vice Chairman of the firm’s Global Industrials Practice an previously served as the President of L.E.K.’s Americas Region. “I get to work with unbelievably smart and talented people,” says a grateful Rourke, who, for 15 years, was a board member of the world-renowned social service organization Chicago Lighthouse. “Our firm’s culture is such a positive one, filled with highly capable, highenergy, down-to-earth people. My colleagues are never, ever satisfied, because they’re trying to do better, always. We’re devoted to better—that’s our mission. Our fantastic team wants to advance things. “It’s rewarding to me, helping companies grow and compete. And it’s an honor to help companies achieve their ideal outcomes.” Owning a ’67 Firebird is an honor, too. Honk your car horn, smile, and wave if you’re at a stoplight and you happen to see Rob Rourke behind the wheel of his beloved set of wheels. He’d certainly appreciate the compliment.

ITADEL THEATRE has been a pillar of the performing arts for North Shore residents for two decades. Producing four mainstage productions a season with each show running for five weeks at a time, Citadel has entertained and captivated the hearts of sophisticated theatergoers and artsminded audience members alike. The productions range from comedies to dramas to musicals—all performed in the intimate 144-seat auditorium. However, Citadel is not just known for professional quality performances. Over the last decade, the nonprofit theater company has also built a reputation for hosting one of Lake Forest’s most coveted events of the social season—the iconic Citadel summer gala. This year’s gala, “A Night at the Moulin Rouge,” will be held July 16 at a renowned David Adler estate in Lake Forest that has

been purchased and is being restored by local residents Adrian and Nancy Smith. “Over the years, our gala has evolved to being touted as the party of the year in Lake Forest,” says Ellen Phelps, co-founder of Citadel Theatre with her husband, Scott Phelps. But exactly how does Citadel keep upping the ante every year? Just as it requires a village to create each of the theater’s productions, the summer gala is orchestrated by a dedicated committee of 44 local residents who believe in the theater and gala’s fundraising mission. “We’ve been blessed with a following of creative and arts-minded individuals who have created long-standing friendships in the process,” says Jennifer McGregor, a long-standing Citadel committee member who has been responsible for establishing the strategic brand and art direction for the galas. “What is truly unique are our

layered and diverse personalities and the multi-generational composition of our committee.” “We truly have our gala committee to thank and the Smiths, who are at the heart of our annual fundraising efforts,” adds Phelps. McGregor says this year’s gala will be a dramatic complement to Citadel’s glitzy and elevated Gatsby and royal themes of the past. “It’s clearly edgy and provocative and we are up to the challenge to thrill and delight our guests,” she explains. The gala’s committee has an event lineup to immerse partygoers into an experience like no other. With the iconic estate as the backdrop and with the help of the talented decor team led by Lori Lennon, 400 guests will be transported to the Moulin Rouge, titillating guests in all five senses. Along with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, silent and live auctions, a tour of the property, and dancing, guests will also enjoy exciting entertainment. “Because we are a performing arts company, we felt strongly that we provide live entertainment like dancers, singers, aerialists, and acrobats,” says Phelps. “Our entertainment is layered with musical artists, dancers, divers, and actors, providing elements of surprise along the way,” says McGregor. “We can’t wait to see how everyone embraces the theme.” The dinner menu consists of a mesclun salad with poached pear, Roquefort cheese, and walnut followed by sliced breast duck a l’orange, garnished with saffron couscous, French green beans, carrots, and oven-baked cherry tomato. A vegetarian option of rotolo with ricotta cheese and plum tomato sauce will also be available and to top off the dining experience is a dark chocolate and berries mousse cake for dessert. “An Evening at the Moulin Rouge” starts at 4 p.m. While considered a “formal” event, you can expect to see just about anything from long gowns and tuxedos to themed costumes and fun dresses. “As long as it can end up in the pool, even better!” says McGregor. “Trust me when I say this, our gala is not your traditional Lake Forest fundraiser.” “Due to the success of our galas, we are able to grow our mainstage productions, our children’s education classes, and our outreach

programming,” says Phelps. “We are so thankful for all the talented people that help us not only throw a great party but also bring great theater to our community.” Funds raised from “An Evening at the Moulin Rouge,” benefit the theater and children’s educational programs and performances. “Citadel Cares provides scholarships for our education classes and summer camps and allows us to provide complimentary tickets to our mainstage productions for military families and nonprofit organizations from underserved communities that wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience live theater,” says Phelps. This summer, Citadel Theatre is also producing “Winnie the Pooh” outdoors at Lake Forest Open Lands and during the winter holiday months, “Junior Clause” will be in production for some holiday fun. “We also produce TYA, Theatre for Young Audiences, performed by professional actors for children,” says Phelps. “This season’s productions consist of a musical in the fall, ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ a comedic British farce; ‘It Runs in the Family,” that will make you laugh through the holidays; ‘The Christians,’ my husband and I saw this produced at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and fell in love with this Obie-award winning play; and finally, ‘Airness,’ a hilarious look inside air guitar competitions.” McGregor says the arts and cultural awareness that Citadel Theatre has brought to the Lake Forest community is now competitive with the Chicago theater scene, pulling city theatergoers north. And it all started with Scott and Ellen. The couple met at the Actors Theatre of Louisville and then went on to New York City to work in professional theater. However, after setting roots in Lake Forest, the couple wanted to bring live theater along with them. “Because we lived in Lake Forest raising our four children, we didn’t want to travel into the city to see or perform theater,” says Phelps. “Scott and I felt the community would benefit from a cultural entity we could all be proud of. Since then, we have partnered with restaurants and retailers making the whole community stronger.” For more information about Citadel Theatre or to get tickets for “A Night at the Moulin Rouge,” visit citadeltheatre.org.
