Editor’s Note

And here we are again, summertime in the North Shore and there’s nothing like it.

With so many outdoor activities such as lakeside picnics, water sports, or just sunbathing, the sandy lakefront beaches are not to be missed. In this month’s issue we highlight our very own shore and the great history behind it in our feature story, “The Beach and Back.” Lake Bluff History Museum unveils its newest exhibit— ”The Lake”—a detailed exploration of the village’s most valuable natural resource. If you need any more inspiration to visit our beaches this month, this exhibit will surely do the trick.

Are you ready to party? The annual gala for the Citadel Theatre, “Denim & Diamonds,” hosted by Adrian and Nancy Smith, is the party of the year in Lake Forest. Our fabulous cover story, “Splashy Soireé,” sets the stage (literally) for the not-to-bemissed, jump in the pool with your tux on event of the summer (maybe even the year). The best part is that while you’re enjoying this epic evening, you’re also doing a great community service by supporting the arts our very own Citadel Theater. Speaking of dancing, here’s another huge Lake Forest “feather in the cap” moment! The Lake Forest High School Dance Team captured the program’s first Illinois High School Association state title in January and followed up with a pair of top-eight finishes at Nationals. Check out the feature story, “All Jazzed Up,” and join us in celebrating these young women’s accomplishment!

This month’s The Portrait focuses on Jessica Margot, a Lake Forest interior designer and mother of two. Her story is one that will inspire you to embrace new beginnings as she reflects on her journey and celebrates

all she has accomplished.

Summer is finally here, which means we have the best of summer 2023 fashion trends on the horizon. And, because summertime has a funny way of passing by so quickly, we need to enjoy it to the fullest! There are sheer fashion looks perfect for humid, 100-degree forecasts as well as luxe pieces to combat the flowing A/C, plus a few other eye-catching ones in between. This month’s The Fix will be your guide for all things fashion for the season.

Finally, for a taste of the bitter and the sweet, turn to “The Last Word’ column. Beloved Lake

Forest resident, flower designer extraordinaire, mental health awareness champion, and bestfriend-to-all Katie Ford and her family says farewell to the community they have nurtured and that has nurtured them, planting new roots in Bluffton, South Carolina. “I will always remember the remarkable people,” she reflects. “Tom, our children, and I felt embraced from day one.”

There truly is no place like home. And with that, we wish you a happy June and a happiest Father’s Day to all those amazing, hardworking dads out there.

Cheers!

PAYTONPALOOZA Lake Forest’s Jill Mickey finds peace in the volunteer work that brought her daughter Payton so much joy. Every year, nearly 2,000 babies are born with a limb difference. Payton Mickey, a Lake Forest High School alum, was passionate about making the lives of these children better. Having completed her doctorate in physical therapy in 2021, Payton was a loyal volunteer at Camp No Limits, a camp specially designed for children with limb loss and limb differences. In July 2021, Payton died unexpectedly in a tragic accident. The Mickey family found that one of the best ways to process their grief was to live like Payton did—in service of others. “Payton loved Camp No Limits,” Jill says. “We created a scholarship in Payton’s name to benefit this camp. Camp No Limits began in 2004 with just four families and today has grown to more than 400 families at 11 locations across the country—its newest in Lake Forest. “Last year, we approached Lake Forest Academy about holding Camp No Limits on their campus for three days over the summer,” Jill explains. “They were so wonderful to work with—so welcoming—and it was so successful that it will be held there again this summer.” Part of Camp No Limits’ mission is to make camp accessible to all families. To this end, Jill—and a tireless team of her closest family and friends—will be hosting a fundraiser, “PaytonPalooza,” at The Toadstool Pub in Highwood on Saturday, June 17. “We have four bands lined up to play late into the night, food trucks, and a silent auction with some amazing getaways to Lake Geneva, Jackson Hole, and Scottsdale that guests can bid on,” Jill says. “This is such a beautiful way for us to honor Payton and to give back in a way that would mean so much to her.” To buy tickets to PaytonPalooza, visit app.donorview.com/YZVgp.

FOREVER CLASSICS

F&B Loves

COUCHER DE SOLE

Since its origins, Vhernier has researched and expressed an essential marriage with art and culture. Each jewel contains worlds of inspiration, ranging from architecture to art, passing through design. Coucher de Sole translates to sunset. This exquisitely designed pink, gold, and brown, bronze cuff bracelet is layered with 18-karat pink gold and brown bronze with split opening was designed after the sunsets on the French Riviera. Vhernier was born from the audacity of a unique vision—to create a totally new jewel, not seen. It’s contemporary, different from everything, with an exceptional fit. And this stems from the desire to free women from the restrictions of dated and conventional elegance, giving them the opportunity to stand out with a new and relevant style. Every Vhernier jewel contains a world of inspiration. This piece is priced at $31,400 and available at bergdorfgoodman.com.

There’s something about a vintage Range Rover that evokes quintessential British sophistication and grace. Produced as a sub-brand of the Jaguar Land Rover marque, the early Range Rover captured the world’s attention, earning it a spot in an exhibition at the Louvre Museum in the early 1970s where it was noted as an “exemplary work of industrial design.” Times, however, have changed, and so has technology. And now, thanks to the vision of UK-based Inverted, the Range Rover of the 20th century is getting a new life as a Tesla-like, “restomod” electric car. Inverted works directly with its clients to update the Range Rover’s interiors with custom materials and a bespoke design that preserves its English provenance. According to the Inverted website, the process is sensitive to the classic style of the car, but modern in approach by reducing the vehicle’s impact on the environment. “Our cars are not only beautifully restored but deliver high performance, with a desire to create an enhanced driving experience remaining core to everything we do,” it says. “Beautiful, reliable, and sustainable classic cars, ready for a long and exciting future.”

The Portrait

Jessica Margot, a Lake Forest interior designer

beginnings and reflects back on her journey.

When North Shore native Jessica Margot chose to move to Lake Forest with her young family about a decade ago, she was charmed by the community and all it had to offer. What she could not have known then was that a few major life changes were going to launch her to the place where she is today—better, stronger, and more successful than she ever thought possible. Perhaps this is because with every challenge that came her way (including a divorce and surviving a Melanoma scare in the midst of a pandemic) this eternal optimist was able to find a silver lining. “I really fell in love with Lake Forest for many reasons,” she says. “I loved the larger plots of land, the schools are wonderful, and the community as a whole is kind, supportive, and family oriented.” Margot, who launched her high end residential design business in 2004 (known as Jessica Margot Design) says it was a fortuitous moment during a vacation with friends that helped put all this change in motion. “I was diagnosed with Melanoma two weeks before shelter in place and that turned out to be the catalyst for my decision to want a divorce,” explains Margot, whose sons (Dante Jr. and Luca) are now 13 and 11. “One of my best friends on a girls’ trip nudged me to go to the dermatologist, which ended up saving my life. I had not been since I was 15 so there was no baseline. So, ladies, take your girls’ trips and keep up with your derm!” With those friends and the community by her side, Margot was able to not only find her inner power but get to the other side. “I could have broken from that, or I could keep pressing forward,” she explains. “I knew my business and income was going to be vital for my ability to go through a divorce and support my two boys, so I chose to keep pressing forward. I had no choice. I became really dialed in to growing my business during that time and I’m proud to say I did just that.” Today, Jessica Margot Design is thriving and now she wants to pay it forward by supporting other mothers and businesswomen. “As a community member, I am all about supporting women in business, as well as small business owners. I have had a tremendous amount of support and loyalty on that front. It’s amazing what women can do when they come together and support each other.”

Early experience or memory that inspired you to become an interior designer? I was always rearranging furniture and loved observing beautiful spaces and places as a child, especially my study abroad trip in college where I spent a month in Milan, Italy.

What motivates you personally? I am my own biggest critic, which also keeps me disciplined. My 10-plus years as a ballerina stuck with me and helps keep me driven and focused on healthy living and staying fit at 48!

Favorite vacation, so far? Costa Rica. My boys and I love going there and plan on returning. Pure Vida!

Favorite television series or film for eye candy interiors?

The White Lotus had a lot of neat and architectural design elements, plus travel is always inspiring to me.

Early experience or memory that inspired you to become an interior designer? I was always rearranging furniture and loved observing beautiful spaces and places as a child, especially my study abroad trip in college where I spent a month in Milan, Italy. Ways your business and your work influences interiors for your own home? Coming out of a large marital home, I found a cozy, happy casita that has become not only mine but many others’ happy space. I transformed the home to give off a Malibu chic vibe with neutral earthy tones that are relaxed and inviting. What is your favorite thing about what you do? My amazing clientele. I love my job and career and feel very fortunate to have owned my own firm since 2004. What motivates you, both professionally and personally? Professionally, my motto is: “You are only as good as your last project” which keeps me on my toes. Personally, I am my own biggest critic, which also keeps me disciplined. My 10-plus years as a ballerina stuck with me and helps keep me driven and focused on healthy living and staying fit at 48! Favorite vacation, so far? Costa Rica. My boys and I love going there and plan on returning. Pure Vida! Favorite thing to do in Lake Forest? Walks along the beach and now visiting all the new and exciting restaurants. Favorite television series or film for eye candy interiors? White Lotus had a lot of neat and architectural design elements, plus travel is always inspiring to me. Favorite interior design icon? Mies Van Der Rohe. A true Icon. Favorite music to listen to while driving? Tropical house and European lounge music. What time of day are you most productive? Early morning or after lunch! Best advice you’ve given or received? “Just Do It!” As for advice I have given, I would say “you are the only person that can truly make yourself happy.” Pets? An adorable 5-year-old red fawn French Bulldog named Keria, who also goes by Kiki. Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to work with as an interior designer? Reese Witherspoon. She is a great mother, talented actress, and super successful. Next item to check off your bucket list? Barcelona and Paris!

MENTAL VICTORY

With summer upon us, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, author of Get Out of the Red Zone, helps those

about to hit the links on the golf course stay on their game. Get Out of the Red Zone

We are our biggest enemies in any sport, but with golf, even more so. With team sports or individual sports such as tennis, we have a clearly defined opponent, who we hope to defeat through skill or strength or a little bit of luck.

With golf, though, we can’t do much to alter our opponents’ fate. But there’s a lot we can do—good and bad—to alter our own. Noted sports psychologist, Lake Forest resident, and founder of EleVive, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo works with student athletes, including golfers, and also with recreational golfers to help them train their minds for a more successful game.

While golf is a game of fun (especially if we’re playing well!) the golf course is also a place where business deals get done. Avoiding embarrassment with customers and clients is always preferrable, and that means making sure you’re listening to the right voices in your head.

“When you’re not playing so well on the golf course that impacts how you interact with your clients and customers,” Lombardo says.

She says a lot of times what happens is when people make a bad shot it gets in their head, and then they start thinking, “I can’t make another bad shot.”

“If you say, ‘Don’t think about a pink elephant, then all you think about is a pink elephant,” Lombardo says. “So, if you tell yourself, ‘Don’t mess up’, you are actually more likely to make another mistake.”

It’s hard to get rid of a thought when you’re beating yourself up for a past mistake and telling yourself not to do it again, Lombardo says, because then a lot of people aren’t putting all of their worth on their next shot. They’re putting a lot of their worth on how they’re playing and a lot of pressure on themselves that the shot needs to be good so that this customer will be impressed by them, or they’ll look good in front of their boss.

“I worked with a man who, throughout the entire year, plays two to three times a week. Not a professional golfer by any means but golf is his love in life,” she says. “He came to me after having the yips. He could not putt. We did one hypnosis session together and that one session was all he needed. I didn’t hear from him for a

while, and he texted me maybe three or four weeks later. He said everything’s back to normal.”

Lombardo first learned about hypnotherapy when she was in psychology school more than 20 years ago and has continued to do extensive training in the practice. Although she was initially skeptical about it, she has found it to be profoundly helpful for her clients.

“It’s very, very powerful because everything that we do is on a subconscious level. So, if your subconscious is working against you instead for you, you do not get to operate at peak performance,” Lombardo says. “If I’m working with a basketball player, for example, they can make 99 out of 100 free throws during practice, but when people are watching them and they are in the psychological Red Zone (high stress), even though it’s the same shot, they just can’t get out of their own way.”

Lombardo usually works with athletes for eight sessions, giving them some skills for how they can make sure their minds are working for and not against them. It requires practice, but there’s a positive payoff.

“Usually, we’ll do one or two unconscious therapy sessions, if you will. I do a lot of guided visualizations to help people start to rewire their brains,” Lombardo says. “So, instead of predicting that it’s going to be a failure, they actually feel and experience the victory.”

THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™

Divorce is complicated. It can be messy. And when you’re first starting out, it’s incredibly overwhelming. It’s hard to know what to expect or even where to start. The attorneys at Strategic Divorce strive to educate our clients on all relevant matters to ease an often-difficult process. It was this goal of education that inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™, which will be released later this summer.

I am pleased to share the following excerpt with Forest & Bluff readers. The Divorce Process –Initial Steps and Strategies

When a client first visits a Strategic Divorce office, an intake session takes place where the client meets with two attorneys. While most firms assign one lawyer per client, we believe it’s important to have two attorneys who are wellversed in the case. This way, if a question arises and one attorney is in court or speaking with another client, the other attorney can address the issue.

During the intake session, we listen to the client’s story—we learn who they are, who their spouse is, if they have kids—if so, how many, what their financial status is, what the home life is like, etc.

Next, and possibly most importantly, we figure out what has to happen for the client to feel like the divorce was successful. We want to know how they picture their life in a year. What assets did they keep? What kind of child decision-making or visitation do they have?

Where do they live? What is their job? This helps us understand what matters most to them and to determine if their goals are attainable. We want to understand a client’s expectations early so we can explain any limitations that exist under the divorce law.

Once the client is ready, we move forward with the divorce or dissolution of marriage. Every divorce starts with one party filing a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage and how this is handled sets the tone for the entire divorce proceeding. Typically, the non-filing spouse is served with the petition. Often, they have no idea it is coming and are surprised when a sheriff shows up at their house or place of work.

Doesn’t sound very amicable, does it?

When Strategic Divorce files a Petition for Dissolution, we avoid papers being served. Instead, we send the petition via email, directly to the other party. This notifies them that we’ve been hired to represent their spouse, requests that they forward the petition to their lawyer, and asks that they contact us within seven days so that we don’t have to serve them.

We encourage clients to have a conversation with their spouse the day before the paperwork is filed. While most couples on the edge of divorce know it’s coming, it still can come as a huge surprise when proceedings actually begin. By warning the spouse the day before the petition is filed, it helps to remove the initial shock.

That being said, we highly recommend that this conversation happens the day before the papers are filed and not a month before. As the original petition is often written in a way that favors the filing party, we want to make sure our clients file first.

After the petition has been sent, the spouse will either hire an attorney or opt to represent themselves (we recommend that you do not represent yourself. You want somebody on your side who fully understands the nuances of divorce law).

I hope you have found this explanation of the beginning of the divorce process illuminating. In my book, I break divorce down into five steps. Next month’s excerpt will address Step 1: Decisions for the Children: How will these be made, which decisions can be made separately, and which ones must be made together? I will explain what to expect when navigating this thorny issue.

The Cubano (Pressed Grilled Ham, Swiss & Pickle Sandwich)

words, photography, and recipe by Monica

Cuban immigrants to Tampa and Key West who came to work in the cigar industry are credited with the creation of this perfect grilled ham and cheese, although exact provenance is a little hazy. There are records of it being a worker’s lunch in Cuba first, where it would have been made with Cuban bread and pressed in a plancha, before it came to Florida. Without a plancha you can finish the sandwich in a panini press, or just pan griddle it in

a little butter with a heavy skillet plunked on top of the bun as I’ve done. I like it with yellow mustard on the top half of the bun and mayo on the bottom, but you can sub in a little butter for the mayo if you like. And if you can’t find Cuban bread, soft fresh bakery sub rolls work really well (you don’t want the bread to be too crusty). Depending on your appetite, you can make the sandwiches stacked with more, or less, meat and cheese, but these measurements will give you ample supply.

42 FOREST & BLUFF

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE CUBANO SANDWICH

• 6 sof t fresh sub rolls

• 2 lb thinly sliced ham

• 2 lb pork tenderloin, marinated, roasted, and thinly sliced (recipe below)

• 1 ½ lb thinly shaved Swiss cheese

• ¼ cup mayonnaise

• ¼ cup yellow mustard

• 2 cups cornichons (tiny pickles, sliced in half lengthwise)

• ½ cup butter (1 stick), divided into pats

FOR THE MARINATED PORK TENDERLOIN

• 2 lb pork tenderloin

• 3 tsp f resh cracked pepper

• 2 tsp salt

• 2 tsp dried oregano

• ½ cup f reshly squeezed orange juice

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 2 Tbsp (3 or 4 limes) fresh squeezed lime juice

• 4 c loves garlic, minced

• 2 Tbsp freshly ground cumin seed

METHOD

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil—pulling the foil up a bit at the edges to make a basket for the pork. Rub tenderloin all over with pepper, salt, and oregano. In a bowl, whisk together orange and lime juice, olive oil, minced garlic, and ground cumin seed. Pour over the tenderloin and roast in oven for 40 minutes or until internal temperature of pork is 145 degrees. While tenderloin roasts, prep sandwich ingredients. On your work surface, slice sub rolls in half lengthwise. Spread inside of the top buns with mustard and inside surface of the bottom bun with mayo. Set aside. Thinly slice ham and Swiss cheese. Once tenderloin is roasted, remove from oven. (Note: I serve the hot marinade/ roasting juices in a dipping cup with the sandwiches for dunking, French Dip style.) Thinly slice the pork. Layer bottom of each bun with thinly shaved Swiss cheese, then ham, then pork (I fold the thin slices in half), then more cheese, and top with the other half of the bun. From the sides, shove cornichons into the middle of the sandwich all the way around, leaving the ends poking out a bit. Melt a few pats of the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Place two sandwiches in the pan and plunk a heavy skillet on top. Sizzle sandwiches for about 2 minutes; lift off weight, flip sandwiches, add weight, and fry again. Remove sandwiches from pan, cut each in half, and keep warm. Repeat with the rest of the sandwiches. Serve hot with a pile of plantain chips, using the reserved roasting pan juices in a cup for dipping if you like, and more pickles.

Luxury on the Lake

/ photography provided by The Residences at The St. Regis Chicago

There’s no place like home—especially when it’s one of Chicago’s most coveted addresses.

Rising 101-stories, The Residences at The St. Regis Chicago is an architectural wonder, expertly shaped by Studio Gang. Located in the heart of Chicago’s Lakeshore East neighborhood, these one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes offer spacious layouts with 360-degree views of Chicago and Lake Michigan—the perfect setting for an unmatched lifestyle of comfort and ease.

The St. Regis Chicago—that houses The Residences at the St. Regis—is a visionary concept by Magellan Development Group, designed by Jeanne Gang. Its crystalline form is inspired by nature, unlike anything on the Chicago skyline. Composed of three interconnected towers of increasing heights and exterior glass walls that move in and out from floor to floor, it is the third tallest building in Chicago—forever changing the city’s landscape.

The Residences at The St. Regis Chicago have exquisitely designed interiors by Hirsch Bedner Associates. The residences combine elegant spaces, exceptional finishes, and breathtaking views to create an ultra-luxury living experience. Each of the residential spaces is expertly crafted with the finest hardwoods, natural stone, and wallcoverings—complementing modern conveniences from luxury brands like Snaidero, Gaggenau, Thermador, and Kallista. Rich in detail, the Residences offer endless style.

“Our residences truly offer the best of everything,” says Rob Pontarelli, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Magellan Development Group. “Gracious, private living space with all of the amenities of a five-star hotel and none of the worries that typically come with home ownership.”

Nearly every amenity imaginable is located on the 47th floor of the St. Regis Chicago, overlooking the crystal blue waters of Lake Michigan.

“We’ve tried to think of everything,” Pontarelli says. “Our residents have access to a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa, golf simulator, cinema, indoor and outdoor pools, children’s club, indoor dog park, large party rooms—you name it. The 47th floor also is staffed with two full-time ‘butlers’ who assist with many of the residents’ needs. The St. Regis is quite impressive in the level of service it delivers, the importance it places on knowing the residents, and its ability to offer unmatched hospitality.”

One additional amenity that mustn’t go unspoken is the option for on-demand Tesla Model Y and Model S vehicles located onsite. Residents can instantly reserve for minutes, hours, or days.

While residents share a building with the St. Regis Hotel, their space will always feel like home.

“Privacy, comfort, and security are top of mind for our residents,” Pontarelli says. “This is what the St. Regis is known for. It’s what it does best.”

BRING A CHANGE OF CLOTHES.

That’s the best advice offered to revelers attending the annual soireé thrown by Adrian and Nancy Smith at their property on Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. The gala benefits the Citadel Theatre, but over the years it’s turned into something more than just a fundraiser. It’s more like a mash up of Downton Abbey and Fast Times at Ridgemont High

This year’s installment, “Denim & Diamonds,” takes

place on Saturday, July 15, and if the last few years are any indication, many of the partygoers will end up wet. It’s a budding tradition for guests, in full tuxedos and gowns, to dive into the pool on the grounds.

This is not your typical gala in a hotel ballroom downtown.

It all got started a few years ago, Smith says, when one reveler, Janet Austin, asked Smith’s wife, Nancy, if she could hop into the pool toward the end of the party. With Nancy’s endorsement, Austin arrived prepared, wearing her swimsuit under a dress, which she promptly dispensed with around 10 p.m. and took a dive into the pool.

Smith’s cousin followed suit, stripping down to his shorts. He was number two in the pool, and that’s when Smith, and others, couldn’t resist.

“I said, ‘Hey, I’ll go get my bathing suit’ because I had it in the house and I swim there a lot for exercise. I kept my swimming suit and towels there. I went up and got my swimming suit on, but I left my tuxedo shirt on and buttons on and all that,” Smith recalls. “I came back down and by that time there were in the neighborhood of six to 10 people in the water already

and others were starting to surround the pool and see what’s going on.”

One of the highlights, Smith says, was an officer from Naval Station Great Lakes, who performed his entry into the pool off of the diving board in his full-dress whites— ribbons and all. Smith credits the start of the tradition to creative whimsy. Austin is an artist and Young a sculptor and, of course, Smith is one of the most well-known architects in the world—having designed notable skyscrapers in Chicago and elsewhere, including the current world’s tallest building in Dubai.

The pool diving is not a bug, it’s now a feature of the gala every year.

But it was a project closer to home, at 830 North Green Bay Road, that led Smith to continue to host the Citadel gala. The Smiths originally hosted the gala at their home in unincorporated Lake County—what his wife Nancy refers to as “the cottage”—a decade ago. It was a slimmer affair back then; more like a picnic, Smith says, that raised about $40,000 for the theatre. In 2018, the Smiths bought the property on Green Bay Road and began a significant restoration that is ongoing.

“It was a total wreck. There were, for example, 75 pipe leak bursts in the walls because the previous owners just left

the water in them,” Smith says. “And no heat because the electricity bills weren’t paid. All the water ended up draining into the basement and sitting there for years.”

He estimates that the property was pretty much derelict for 15 years, but it was designated as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places in the early ‘90s. Smith

I’ll go get

bathing suit’...”

adds that he read somewhere that it was under threat to be destroyed so he was motivated to restore it.

“David Adler was the original architect, and all of the original drawings were stored at the Art Institute of Chicago,” Smith says. “We were able to get them when we started restoring the property and stay faithful to the drawings.”

The property went through a significant renovation by W. Clement Stone in 1972 but he was really focused on taking it back to the original, including restoring the entryway. There’s still more work to do to make the house livable. It doesn’t have a full kitchen and there’s no master bathroom,

50 FOREST & BLUFF
“I said ‘Hey,
my
Entertainers from Moulin Rouge gala

but the house is still being put to good use.

“Nancy has a studio there for her painting. She’s an artist,” he says. “I have an office there for my work. Even though I have a downtown office, I work at Green Bay Road quite often because now the traffic’s terrible with construction on the roads. A third section of the house is rented to the chef at the Deer Path Inn.”

There’s also an art school of sorts, Smith says, where an art teacher that used to teach in France (and taught Nancy French painting techniques) where eight to 12 budding artists take lesson during six-week sessions.

Historic estate restoration isn’t cheap, and Smith says the art school brings in a little income to defray the costs. He’s a “pay-as-yougo” preservationist.

But back to the party. Past themes for the gala have included The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, and “The Royal Ball,” which would have perhaps been appropriate for this year as well for reasons across the pond, but this year’s “Denim & Diamonds” is a Western-tinted affair (cue the denim). All hats, no cattle, you could say. Entertainment features live country tunes from the Nashvillebased Tyson Hanes Band and the menu includes Texas style BBQ beef brisket and Texas cake for dessert.

While the early days of the Citadel Theatre gala only raised around $50,000, the popularity of the gala—driven by the energy of the Smiths and the gala committee—has driven that number up to the $200,000 range. Smith says his interest in the theater started when Nancy went to see one its plays.

The committee is run by Scott and Ellen Phelps and

meets at Green Bay Road property about once a month to get organized and ready for upcoming year’s event. They ask for suggestions and the process takes a couple of months to home in on a theme. Support for small, local theater is a bit like keeping an old property alive.

“Live theater in a small, intimate venue is very special and Citadel puts on great Jeff-recommended plays that are enjoyable, fun to be a part of and sometimes hilarious,” Smith says. “Sometimes they evoke strong emotions. Just like the fundraising gala that is now in its ninth year. It is the fuel that makes the theater run.”

Early bird single tickets for Citadel Theatre’s “Denim and Diamonds” are $350, and tables of 10 cost $3,500. VIP tickets (no early bird pricing), which include a one-hour, private pre-reception with cocktails and a tour of the entire estate, are $400. Tickets can be purchased at citadeltheatre.org.

Lake Bluff History Museum

JULY 15 CAN’T COME SOON ENOUGH for the curators at the Lake Bluff History Museum. Its newest exhibit—”The Lake”—has been years in the making.

Covering the role Lake Michigan and its beach have played in the lives of those who have

not only religious activities but also social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs.

Summer visitors were attracted to Lake Bluff to enjoy the beach and ravines and participate in the Camp Meeting activities. By the mid-1880s, there were more than 30 hotels and boarding houses—in varying degrees of luxury—plus a large tabernacle with seating for more than 2,000 people in what today is East Lake Bluff.

“There was an emerging middle class with leisure time on their hands because of the advances of the industrial revolution,” Russell says. “People had time to be away from the city during the summer months and these camps were the perfect destination. They appealed to all income levels.”

As the Methodist Camp Days came to an end, Lake Bluff incorporated and soon after, formed a Park District.

resided in Lake Bluff since 1875, Exhibit Director Pam Russell hopes that museum visitors will take away a new appreciation for one of the community’s greatest assets.

“It has taken us some time to pull this exhibit together because there is such a big story to tell,” Russell says of the small but mighty crew of museum volunteers who have been conducting the research. “How the beach was enjoyed in the Camp Meeting days, what it was like once Lake Bluff was incorporated, and how erosion may impact its future—there’s a lot to be said.”

The Lake Bluff History Museum, which shares a space with the Lake Bluff Library, provides a glimpse at local history and highlights topics deserving a more detailed look. These exhibits trace Lake Bluff’s evolution from a rural farm community to a summer resort, to the suburban community it is today, and link it to the bigger picture of what’s happening in our country as a whole.

As the story goes, it was in the late 1800s that a group of Methodist ministers purchased 100 acres of local lakefront property. The Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association was formed and the little settlement was renamed “Lake Bluff.” The Association provided

“Much like today, the Park District issued annual beach passes and they hired their first lifeguard,” Russell says with a laugh. “The only hired one and we have pretty detailed records of the breaks that one lifeguard on duty was given.”

Among the treasures available to be seen at The Lake exhibit are the beach tags residents had to affix to their

swimsuits when they visited the beach. The metals used for the tags varied largely based on what was available during the years the United States was at war. There are also a number of suits on display to show what swimwear was in style throughout the decades.

Lake Michigan and its beach played a significant role in the social lives of Lake Bluff’s residents. In the 1950s, Lake Bluff’s volunteer firemen would catch smelt, freeze them, and then host a Smelt Soiree (serving fried smelt and coleslaw to the community). A social group called “Tab & Tennis” was formed that organized beach parties, carnivals, bonfires, and even prettiest baby contests. And in 1961, the Lake Bluff Yacht Club was founded, formalizing the community’s love for water sports that is still going strong today.

“One of the things that I found most interesting in working on this exhibit is that the same things we com-

plain about today—too many people parking at the beach, too many outsiders using the beach are the same things residents were complaining about 150 years ago,” Russell says. “Except instead of cars being the problem, it was the horses and buggies.”

While the recreational activities of Lake Bluff lakefront may be what draws people to the History Museum’s newest exhibit, it’s the information beachfront’s erosion that might leave the greatest impression.

“I think the environmental piece will be really surprising to people,” Russell says. “The impact the erosion and invasive species have had on the beach over the years are hard to ignore. I hope people who visit our exhibit take away a greater appreciation for the lake and how important it is that we take care of it.”

“The Lake” will open to visitors at the Lake Bluff History Museum on Saturday, July 15. To learn more, visit lakebluffhistory.org.

EVER UNDERESTIMATE the power of storytelling in dance.

Lake Forest High School’s Dance Team in 20222023 certainly did not, as its 18 members accentuated their collective athleticism with a moving narrative at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Finals and at the National Dance Team Championships (NDTC) in January.

“We were encouraged to show our emotions on stage through our dance movements,” senior co-captain and University of Illinois-bound Bentley Frost says. “Dance is an art form as much as it is a sport.”

Head coach Angela McNicholas’ performers excelled in both— topping the Class 2A field to win the program’s first IHSA state title in Bloomington on January 28, and then finishing in fourth

place (Large Varsity Pom) and in eighth place (Large Varsity Jazz) in early February at the NDTC in Orlando, Florida. Ashley Nash served as the Scouts’ assistant coach.

Known for its success in the Pom category—LFHS squads won national championships in Pom in 2013 and 2014—the program tapped former Ohio State University Dance Team Choreographer Ricky Ruiz to serve in the same capacity and enliven its Jazz routine.

The team performed to the alternative/indie song If I Had a Boat by James Vincent McMorrow. It’s a tune about transformation and change and resilience, ending with the passage “Now I’m pointed north, hoping for the shore.”

Lake Forest High School’s Scouts started practicing the routine under the guidance of McNicholas (LFHS Class of 2005), Nash

FOREST & BLUFF 59

(LFHS Class of 2001), and Ruiz in early November.

“Working with Ricky Ruiz was a huge deal for us,” senior cocaptain and Tulane University-bound Elsa Dahlgren says. “The song tells a powerful story. We needed strong choreography to express it. The song is divided into three parts. First, a boat starts to sink. Then, we come together for each other to save our lives. At the end of our routine, at the top right of the stage, we all hug and form a cluster, determined to reach safety together.”

“Ricky,” Frost recalls, “pushed us all out of our comfort zones, and we pushed ourselves every day until we got it right for competitions. It was tough, physically, but it was all worth it because we were doing what we love to do.”

Their January was packed with tests on five consecutive weekends, beginning with a Universal Dance Association regional competition (first place) and continuing with the North Suburban Conference competition, where LFHS took second to Class 3A Stevenson High School. LFHS then secured the Warren Sectional championship in Gurnee, edged Geneva High School 92.72-92.48 for the 2A IHSA state title at the Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington and capped the grueling stretch with two top-eight showings at Nationals.

The dance team’s state championship was the 23rd in LFHS history across all IHSA-recognized sports.

“The hectic month of competition, along with the travel and the preparation, kept them all on their toes and benefited them,” says McNicholas, who also served as the team’s head dance coach during the football season in the fall. “We saw tremendous growth throughout the month as they continued to climb, week after week. They finished their routine beautifully on the second day of the state competition. They hugged, waved to the crowd, and walked off the stage. This group’s priorities began with trust and being solid teammates. They also showed respect and kindness.

“I remember thinking, as soon as they exited the stage at the state competition, ‘It doesn’t matter where we finish.’ I thought that because what I had just enjoyed was our school’s dance team embodying perseverance to come out stronger on the other side—the main message of If I Had a Boat.”

But the squad’s members couldn’t rest on their laurels for a second. They had to practice the next day for Nationals, which commenced in The Sunshine State five days later.

They did, however, find the time to celebrate at Puck’s Pub & Grill in Lake Bluff after their return trip from Bloomington.

“Our team’s dads were so into it,” Dahlgren says. “I think one of them rented out all of Puck’s just for us that night. Another dad saw to it that a recording of our final routine at state ran on the TV at Puck’s. We all got to watch it again. I’ll never forget how I felt while performing near the end of our routine in the state finals. When you’re feeling that everyone is putting their all into it and everything is going well at the same time, you become energized like never before.”

Other members of the 2022-2023 LFHS Dance Team included seniors Mia D’Alessandro, Brynn Waligora, Lily Pedian, Rachel Brown, and Viola Swartout; juniors Alana Tennett, Rachel Silvers, Maddie VanNuys, Ellery Newman, and Bianca Storino; sophomores Reese Harper, Blakely Rice, Lyla Carney, Amelia Hansen, and Kate Westerman; and freshman Mia Konkel.

Each upperclassman achieved All-Academic status in both eligible semesters.

“Pretty amazing,” McNicholas notes. “This group worked hard and paid attention to details. It was a coach’s dream. The IHSA recognition the girls earned elevated them in the eyes of the community.”

McNicholas was an assistant coach under the program’s previous two head coaches. She had worked for five years as a choreographer and assistant dance coach at Loyola Academy in Wilmette.

“(McNicholas) was always there for us inside and outside the studio,” Dahlgren says. “She asked a lot of us, but all of us knew she did that out of love for us.”

The Dance Team state championship placard now hangs in Lake Forest High School’s main gym among all those tennis, swimming and diving, and golf state championship placards.

Dance isn’t a club. Dance isn’t an activity.

It’s a sport, featuring creative game plans (show-stopping routines) and elite athletes.

“That’s so cool,” Dahlgren says. “Our banner will be up in the gym forever.

“Our team left a mark,” Frost adds. “Our team this year had a bond I’d never experienced as a dancer. We clicked instantly and stayed close.

“I loved every minute of the season.”

ROCK THE SPIRIT

Dancing and dollars came together when the Spirit of 67 Foundation hosted “Rock the Spirit” at Ferrari Lake Forest on April 29. With entertainment by District 67’s own student musicians and the popular party band, Hello Weekend, nearly 400 guests dined, danced, and donated within the stunning Ferrari showroom. In keeping with the Foundation’s mission to raise funds to provide enriching, educational and cultural experiences for the students, a raffle as well as silent and live auctions were held. Diamond earrings, vacation packages, and dozens of auction items—including priceless student experiences—ensured the event would be a success. MAKING CONNECTIONS

Montessori School of Lake Forest’s annual spring benefit, “We Are All Connected,” was held April 22 at the renowned David Adler Estate in Lake Forest.

Hosted by owners Adrian and Nancy Smith with a goal to connect and to celebrate our beloved school, the event raised more than $50,000. That money will be used to help fund the remodel of the school’s kitchen classroom—supporting a cooking program that provides hands-on experience for students as well as a garden-to-table experience connecting their cooking work with the organic gardening they learn on campus as well.

Retail Renovation— Meet the New Old Orchard

Westfield Old Orchard, a fixture on the North Shore for decades and one of the busiest and most successful malls in America, is constantly evolving. Conveniently located off the Edens Expressway, it has become the perfect meeting spot for Chicagoans and suburbanites alike. Whether meeting with friends, relaxing in a beautiful park setting, letting your kids explore the mall’s state-of-the-art playground, or eating at some of the best restaurants in the Chicagoland area—and oh yes, shopping—Westfield Old Orchard has it all and then some.

In fact, with a bevy of first-class retailers and more on the way, the shopping is hard to beat. A host of upscale retailers including Louis Vuitton, the re-imagined Bloomie’s, Alo Yoga, Tory Burch, Psycho Bunny, and more have joined Westfield Old Orchard’s flagship stores of Nordstrom and Macy’s.

Always attuned to the needs of its customers, Westfield Old Orchard kicked off an extensive redevelopment plan this year, promising to combine the best in luxury retail, upscale dining, entertainment, health and wellness options, and luxury amenities—all nestled in their beautiful open green space and outdoor lounges.

Some of the highlights underway, according to Serge Khalimsky, the general manager of Westfield Old Orchard, include the redevelopment of the old Lord & Taylor building, which will be divided into four new concepts offering new luxury home furnishings, top fashion, and entertainment options and the addition of more highend retailers and eateries. The goal is to make Old Orchard a community gathering place for locals and visitors alike offering everything from outdoor concerts to farmers markets to festivals.

Business is booming and customers and retailers alike could not be happier. Khalimsky shares, “We have an incredible team that has relationships with some of the best tenants and some of the best retailers in the world. We continue to bring that to the North Shore of Chicago.”

These strong relationships have led to a veritable explosion in dining options. Some of the newer restaurants include city favorites like Capital Grille, Siena Tavern, Hampton Social, Shake Shack, and Molly’s Cupcakes, to name a few.

Big changes have been made to Westfield Old Orchard’s outdoor spaces as well. Inspired by the nearby, world-renowned Chicago Botanic Garden, Westfield Old Orchard has focused on improving and enhancing its outdoor spaces, investing in landscaping to make everything as beautiful and inviting as possible. “It’s like walking through a park on a sunny day,” Khalimsky observes.

“I think a part of our success is due to our location between Chicago and the North Shore,” Khalimsky says. “On top of that, I think there’s a big trend, especially after COVID, of people being drawn to outdoor spaces. Living in Chicago, all of us really celebrate, especially when it’s nice out, being outdoors. That’s why we have so many festivals and so many things to do outside during the spring, summer, and fall months of the year. We really want to capitalize on that.”

Khalimsky encourages visitors to not only come to the mall to eat and shop but to “come and read a book next to some of our flower installations or even conduct a meeting outside. Or spend an afternoon working on your laptops when it’s really nice out and just enjoy the fresh air, and grab a cup of coffee. And really, just enjoy the nature of it.”

“We have a gem on the north side of the city.” With summer’s warm days and soft nights ahead, what better time to take advantage of all that Westfield Old Orchard has to offer?

TETRA CO2 LASER TREATMENT

Tetra’s Cool Peel was honored with the Best CO2 Laser treatment in the 13th Annual New Beauty Awards. Out of 10,000 submissions Tetra CO2 laser was voted the No. 1 CO2 laser treatment. Our experience at Skin Deep Medical Spa corroborates this honor.

The Tetra CO2 Cool Peel laser treatment is cutting-edge technology that uses extremely short pulses of light to enhance the skin’s texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, minimize pores, and tighten skin. It’s a non-invasive aesthetic technology that can dramatically improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and clear up the skin’s complexion.

One of the main benefits of Tetra Cool Peel treatment is that it can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration needed to tailor and optimize treatments.

The Cool Peel leverages the exclusive H-Pulse a high-peak power short pulse that delivers a fully ablative treatment without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Without thermal damage, downtime is drastically minimized. Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration to tailor and optimize treatments.

The procedure is quick and virtually painless depending on the area and depth of the treatment. One can often treat large areas of the body quickly and without numbing agents. Post-op there is minimal if any discomfort. The skin feels a little dry and begins peeling or flaking in days leaving you with smooth, radiant skin.

This treatment is presently available at both Highland Park and Glenview locations.

LOVE, KATIE

Beloved Lake Forest resident, flower designer extraordinaire, mental health awareness champion, and best-friend-to-all Katie Ford says farewell to the community.

She sees life in flowers. Each stem is a story. Each new bloom is an opportunity So, you might say that when Katie Ford and husband, Tom, moved to Lake Bluff in 2001, they were nothing more than a seed packet—a pair of hopeful perennials, destined to take roots in the community and grow. And that’s exactly what they did, eventually moving to Lake Forest where they raised four children and embedded themselves into daily life in our community. Like any flower, or living thing, the passing years and decades brought a chorus of joy and loss, laughter and struggle. Before the pandemic, when mental health became a crisis throughout the nation, Katie bravely stepped into the local spotlight via social media to share her own personal struggles with OCD. Her mission was to let others know they were not alone. She wanted them to know there was help available. Then a miracle happened. It worked. Her message quickly resonated and the door to healing was opened. “All of us have mental health and people should not fear it or be in denial, because if they do, it is really hard to get better,” explains Katie, who found her own comfort through the quiet art of arranging flowers, which quickly became a local business via flowersbykatieford. com. “I think our community has come a long way in this area over the past several years and if I contributed at all, I would certainly feel good about that.” As spring fades into summer and gardens come back to life, Katie and Tom will be saying farewell to the community they have nurtured and that has nurtured them, planting new roots in Bluffton, South Carolina. As with all good-byes, it is both bitter and sweet. “I will always remember the remarkable people,” she reflects. “Tom, our children, and I felt embraced from day one. During the good times and tough times, people always rallied to support one

another. Through the loss of a brother and struggles with mental illness, the support was unwavering.” Her final words resonate like a big bouquet of forget-me-nots. “I love you, Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities, Thank you for being so wonderful to the Ford family.” To which, we’d like to say, thank you, Katie Ford, for bringing our community hope, which is forever in bloom.
