This month is my birth month and as such, I will be escaping to Mexico and will return with hopefully a little more color and a fabulous new travel story to warm your souls during the inevi table winter blues.
HHHH, October! Hello again ... I feel like we were just here yesterday.Because yes, it’s that time of the year when a distinct autumnal chill is in the air and the haphazard rush of summer gives way to fall’s introspection. With that in mind, this issue takes a look at some changes in the world of mental health in our own community.Inourcover story, “Change Maker,” Melissa Pas Blake of Lake Forest speaks about building an inspiring mental health practice that helps cli ents heal through hypnotherapy and realigning the way they see themselves, and the world. An other incredibly heartwarming feature, “Positiv ity Personified,” tells the story of tetraplegic and Lake Forest resident Chris Brennan, who started Brennan Rehabilitation Foundation (BRN) to spread hope to others. One of this year’s three BRN Socrates Award grantees is 8-year-old Cooper Roberts, a victim in the July 4 shooting in Highland Park. It gives me chills to watch the efforts of our locals reach into other suburbs with giving love and empathy. It’s the true meaning of community.Continuing the mental health theme, Lauren Schifferdecker, MA, LCPC, brings a team of counselors equipped to address today’s most pressing issues to a beautiful new center in downtown Lake Forest. “To Inspire” makes its presence known by helping to keep us living in the present. To make sure each guest receives the most excellent experi ence, Schifferdecker is committed to making sure each thera pist loves their job. She invests in the staff with an abundance of support, beautiful space, connection, generous compensa tion, and fun. These things have allowed her to create a team of the highest caliber of counselors for the community.
AUREN SCHIFFERDECKER has always loved Lake Forest. And she’s still having a hard time believing that she has founded a counseling center right in the heart of its downtown.“Wehad so many clients coming to us from Lake Forest,” Schifferdecker says. “I fi nally said, ‘we should be going to them.’”
you are a guest at Inspire, Schifferdecker wants you to feel safe, cared for, and valued—from your first call to your last appointment. From the spa-like music and decor to the warmth and excellent care from each therapist—t is all de signed to create a healing place to thrive.

Her belief in what Inspire is doing was validated when she decided to open her Kenilworth office during the height of the pandemic. “We decided to take a risk and open a new space when others mostly chose to provide services online,” she says. “We opened Kenilworth in June 2020. We were

Lauren Schifferdecker, MA, LCPC, brings a team of counselors equipped to address today’s most pressing mental health issues to a beautiful new center in downtown Lake Forest.
Last spring, Schifferdecker—a married mother of two and a former public relations executive—opened the third In spire Counseling Center, her newest offering after successful launches in Northfield and Kenilworth. Schifferdecker, who knows the power of therapy, wanted to bring its benefits to others.“We’re
Inspire office
When asked if she can see opening another office in the future, Schifferdecker knows better than to say never. But for now, her plate feels full and she’s committed to delivering the highest quality services through her current locations. But she does have one dream she’d like to see come true later this year.
Schifferdecker chose the name for her counseling center intentionally. “I still have the list of names I was considering on my phone,” she says. “But there is something positive and hopeful about the word ‘inspire’ and that’s exactly how I want our clients to feel.”
There is more to come from Inspire Counseling Centers for sure.
In addition to overseeing Inspire, Schifferdecker is a pro fessional speaker, including giving a TEDx talk. She has been invited to several businesses, leadership, networking, moms’ groups, and churches to share clinical tools and research and inspire change in the communities she loves.
TO INSPIRE
“I see Inspire as a nest,” she says. “Whatever bird flies in first is often the first one we take care of. But that bird rarely comes alone—it might have a mama or grandma, or a sib ling with them. Inspire is prepared to take care of whomever comes to our nest, whenever they’re ready. You can stay as long as you want and return for visits even after you fly away.”

“Making dreams come true is at the very heart of Moth ers Trust Foundation,” Riedel explains, who is co-chairing the event with Libertyville’s Lori Dann. “We see every day how the money we raise makes a difference in the lives of the fami lies we serve. I want to help others see this mission and want to be a part of making this happen for our MTF families.”

Since its inception, Mothers Trust Foundation has assisted more than 43,000 children with nearly $4.4 million in grants.
“We would love for more people to join our meetings—it’s just one hour each week and Zoom has made it very easy for people to come in and out of those calls as they have time. At its core, Mothers Trust Foundation fills in financial gaps for children from birth to age 21, in turn providing hope, building confidence, and making a positive difference in young people’s lives. “We are very good stewards of the money we receive,” says Turelli. “We take the trust people have in us veryToseriously.”thisend, each Wednesday morning at 9:30, a group of Mothers Trust Foundation volunteers and staff gather on a Zoom call and in person in their office at Gorton Commu nity Center to review grant requests and vote on whether or not a grant should be made. Grant requests are submitted to MTF by social workers and school counselors throughout Lake County on behalf of the children they’re representing. “It’s very important for Mothers Trust Foundation to stick to our guidelines when evaluating grant requests,” Turelli says.

“Our Fairytale Ball idea grew out of the joy we saw during our Pop-Up Prom Shoppe dress giveaway. It was a fairytale ending to see everyone’s smiles in their beautiful dresses,” Turelli says. “We hope to see many new faces and friends at this fun event for a wonderful cause.”

Monsor was once asked why she decided to call the orga nization she founded “Mothers Trust.” “There is a notion of mothering at the heart of what Mothers Trust tries to accom plish,” she once said, herself a mother of six and grandmother to eight. “The name sends a message of affection, responsibil ity, and accountability. A big part of this in my mind is that you’re always accountable to your mother.”
Lake Forest’s Mothers Trust Foundation will be one step closer to helping children realize their dreams after its Fairytale Ball on October 29.

This first-time gala will be a fitting tribute to the founda tion’s beloved founder Barbara Monsor who died earlier this year at the age of 99. Monsor founded MTF in 1998 after witnessing firsthand how a seemingly small amount of help can change a child’s life. Her idea was simple—to connect people in desperate situations with those who want to provide assistance where it will truly make a difference.

Knaack’s ghost story is just one of several tales in cluded in the Lake Bluff History Museum’s upcoming Ghost Walk, which will take place on October 21 and 22. The walk is returning after a few years off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is the brainchild of Cath erine McKechney, a scary story enthusiast who started the tradition in 1997.

GHOST STORIES
N THE EVENING of October 30, 1928, Elf rieda Knaack was found severely burned in the fur nace of Lake Bluff Village Hall. She would die in the hospital three days later. The rest of the story is a
mystery. Knaack, a local schoolteacher, refused to tell authorities how she might have ended up in the furnace, and who might have put her there.
After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the Lake Bluff History Museum makes a triumphant return this month.

COUTURE CHRONICLES
W
Fashion choices are, therefore, of paramount importance. People with an interest in fashion span all sections of society, from muse ums seeking items of historical significance to collectors passionate about designers and styles to the wearers who like to be draped in beautiful and functional garments. Savvy buyers know that the auc tion market is a place to find unique finds. In recent years, investors are also placing their bets on the secondary market for fashion, with Forbes contributor Lela London reporting that “Designer Hand bags Are Now A Better Investment Than Art.” Forbes quotes the annual review by Art Market Research, which “has been measuring price movements in the fine art market since 1976,” stating that luxury handbags “now outperform art, classic cars, and rare whis kies in terms of investment potential. Some bags, from the likes of Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton, have even experienced a valu ation spike of an average of 83 percent in the last ten years. To put that into context, coins have increased by 21 percent, first-edition books by 42 percent, and watches—the assumed king of fashionable investments—by just 72 percent.”
In addition, buying clothes with a history behind them is a choice that helps the planet by avoiding “fast fashion.” In an article by contributor Catherine Erdly, Forbes reported that the “secondhand clothing market is growing 11 times faster than traditional retail and is estimated to be worth more than double that of fast fashion, at $84 billion by 2030 (while fast fashion is projected to be worth around $40 billion at the same time).” And who doesn’t have a fa vorite piece of clothing they would like to wear forever? Perhaps you can find another one at auction.
As Hindman Auctions’ Director and Senior Specialist of Cou ture and Luxury Accessories, I have been able to dive into the past and learn more about a range of individuals’ experiences with fash ion. Having worked in the field of fashion for decades, I have no shortage of intriguing anecdotes and have also seen how the market for luxury goods has rapidly developed. From contemporary fashion to vintage and antique articles of clothing, there is always some thing new to discover.
Fashion is not just a utilitarian commodity. Fashion is an art—a “soft sculpture”—designed to please the eye and perform a function, making it one of the most complex artistic forms. Design, engi neering, science, and artistry are all required to make a garment or accessory. In addition, fashion responds to and influences societal changes, making it a powerful transversal tool to study history and the diversity of people who wear it.
The Couture & Luxury Accessories Department will present an online auction on September 16 with bidding beginning at 10 a.m., hindmanauctions.com/auctions/1076-fall-fashion- accessories. Bidding is available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room, bid.hindmanauctions.com or the Hindman app. The couture and accessories will be available for preview from September 13 to 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Timothy Long at 312-280-1212 or timothylong@ hindmanauctions.com.
At Hindman, we carefully select fashion items from all over the United States and present them in four annual auctions. For each item, we perform careful research to ensure authenticity, quality, and condition. This process is why our clients include first-class muse ums, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In a world that ap pears to encourage an eternal revival of forms and styles—think how styles come in and out of fashion over the years—garments and accessories sold at Hindman are historically significant, expanding the notion of fashionable from something ephemeral to something eternally wearable.

F YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED in a lawsuit or legal pro ceeding, you know how stressful it is to worry about the out come. However, it is beneficial to understand that the legal system is set up with checks and balances. For example, if you are involved in a divorce proceeding and the court makes a ruling that you feel is inconsistent with the statutory guide lines or case law, you may appeal that decision to the appel late court. If the appellate court does not change the ruling to your liking, you may ask the Illinois Supreme Court to review the lower court’s ruling. The Illinois Supreme Court is the state’s highest court, which also supervises and administers the state’s judicial sys tem. As part of its duties, the supreme court supervises more than 1,000 circuit court judges and more than 50 appellate court judges to ensure decisions are consistent with Illinois statutes and case law.

Strategic Divorce attorney Nicholas A. Riewer and the Honorable Elizabeth Rochford explain the importance of understanding the qualifications of candidates for Illinois courts.
With respect to the Illinois Supreme Court, the court consists of seven justices who are chosen by popular vote in partisan elections and serve a ten-year term. After the initial ten-year term, they are on the ballot in an uncontested, nonpartisan election to continue serv ing. The Illinois Supreme Court justices are elected from five differ ent judicial districts. Three of the Supreme Court justices are elected from the 1st District (Cook County), and one Supreme Court jus tice is elected from each of the other four districts.

Judges at all three levels, the circuit court, the appellate court, and the supreme court, are appointed or elected in partisan elections.
Nobody wants to be involved in the legal process; however, if you are, you will realize how important it is to have qualified and com petent individuals serving as judges. Many people, even practicing attorneys, are not fully informed about the candidates running for judge. As the 2022 election approaches, it is vital that voters know as much as possible about each candidate’s qualifications and com

• Strip of lemon or orange peel, for garnish
• ¾ ounce f reshly squeezed lemon juice
REATED OVER A century ago, the Sidecar is perhaps the world’s most popular cognac cocktail—and un derstandably so. Elegant cognac is shaken with freshly squeezed lemon juice and orange liqueur, resulting in cozy, tart-sweet-dry perfection. The sugared rim is op tional but strongly recommended as it lends a touch of balanced sweetness to each sip.
• 1 ounce best-quality orange liqueur (such as Coin treau or Pierre Ferrand dry curaçao)

INGREDIENTS
1. Thoroughly chill a coupe glass.
C
• 2 ounces cognac
INSTRUCTIONS
4. Garnish with a twist of lemon or orange.
2. Sugar the rim: Add sugar to a saucer or small plate, then lightly run a lemon wedge around the rim of glass. Turn glass upside down and dip rim directly into sugar—no twisting necessary.

You’ll also be able to reuse these ideas year after year since they’re more grounded and subtle than the usual knick-knacks. there a recipe you’re dying to have?
HEN I WAS 5, my best friend’s mom—a prima ballerina from Australia, took it upon herself to teach the girls in our class ballet. We may have been her biggest challenge yet! But I loved leaping across the dark wooden floorboards in my pink leotard, my tights forever bagging at the knee and ankle, doing my utmost to transform into a swan. Af terward, Yvonne’s mom would make us peanut butter and banana sandwiches on toast. Those flavors together still bring me back. Here, they are combined in a deli cious muffin recipe adapted from baker Jessica Gross man’s original, with swirls of peanut butter cream cheese frosting on top.
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 large eggs

• ½ tsp salt
For the frosting:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Tuck paper muffin lin ers into two 12-cup muffin tins. In the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment, beat eggs with the white and brown sugars at medium speed until smooth and fluffy. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl with spatula as needed. Add oil in a slow steady stream. Beat in va nilla, mashed bananas, and peanut butter. In a medium bowl, sift flour, salt, and baking powder together. Alter nating with drizzles of the milk, add flour to batter in three parts. Mix only until no flour streaks show. Do not overmix. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full of batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes until tops of muffins spring back when touched. Muffins will have crackled tops. Set on a cooling rack while you make frosting.

From celebrity athletes to hometown hopefuls, renowned Lake Forest psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo helps her clients elevate their mindset and rewire their brains to thrive.
“My coaches and I provide the life skills training needed to over come those obstacles and develop habits that enhance emotional intelligence and optimize performance,” says Dr. E, explaining how her patented Neuro-Regenerative Training™ (NRT) uses cutting edge neuroscientific principles to rewire the brain and enhance suc cess. “Today I’m a professional speaker and do a lot of media, but there was a time when I was scared to death to talk to more than three people. When my first book was published, getting the mes sage out there meant being on stages and being on TV. I did a lot of internal work to change my fear-based thinking and get out of my own way.”
The only difference now is, she’s taking that training to a popula tion that needs it most—teens and their parents.

WELLNESS PERSONAL BEST
Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo
“Most athletes spend a lot of time focusing on their bodies and yet, it’s our minds that allow our bodies to perform optimally,” she says. “Optimizing mindset and what we are saying to ourselves in side is pivotal to any kind of peak performance, especially in sports. It’s what I would call a secret advantage.”
ful to protect the identity of the student athlete. “So, we did a really cool technique and cre ated a memory of his success in winning the ultimate game at the entire competition ... it was extremely powerful, rewiring his brain.”Asa result, the young man performed better than he ever thought possible. Another one of her clients was a young high school golfer who was having is sues with his putting. He and his parents received Dr. E’s training to overcome a fear of failure on the golf course when all of a sudden, a light bulb went off.
SECRET TO THEIR SUCCESS
Young people suffering from anxiety or depression often share one common denominator— their thoughts and internal dialogue are almost always negative self-talk, reinforcing messages about what’s “wrong” with them instead of reimagining all that could be “right.”

“I started EleVive right before the pandemic because I began to see a real need to bring adolescents and their parents the same life skills I’d been teaching executives and professional athletes for years,” says Lombardo, who is often referred to in the media as “Dr. E.” “Stress and mental health issues were skyrocketing in our young people. They were getting the medication but not the skills and training necessary to rewire their brain.”
With her third book, Get Out of the Red Zone: Transform Your Stress and Optimize True Success, already garnering rave reviews, Dr. E says she will continue to spread her “secret ingredient” to all who need it. And among her Elevive clients, that includes parents.
“These are not skills we’re teaching in schools but when you look at what predicts success, it’s emotional intelligence, stress manage ment, and grit. We provide our teams with these skills and I work with parents to help them help their children,” she adds. “This is a different generation and there are different approaches for us to be better parents for our children. Once they have these skills and resilience, they’ll have them for life.”

“The mind is powerful and a person’s mindset is criti cal to creating change,” explains Blake, a clinical hyp notherapist and life coach who utilizes hypnotherapy for her Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) and Hearthealing®. “The only thing we have control over are our thoughts. Our thoughts control our feelings, our feelings control our actions, and our actions control our behavior.”
words by Sherry Thomas photography by Katrina Wittkamp hair and makeup by Frances Tsalas
As a mother of three who has endured her own trau ma and loss, the journey to finding a career in positive healing was a personal one.
Melissa Pas Blake of Lake Forest calls this the “lemon test” and it’s often the first step she takes when helping clients at Pasitive Solutions LLC. This exercise usually elicits a physical response and the purpose is to demonstrate that the pictures we make in our heads and the words that we say to ourselves become real. Blakes’s techniques help people overcome issues including anxi ety, self-sabotage, loss, addiction, trauma, as well as va riety of other issues that prevent them from reaching their true potential.
She says the difference between traditional psychol ogy and what she does with hypnotherapy is—rather than telling someone what’s “wrong” with them, she is able to help the client go deep in their subconscious to uncover the source of their anxiety, self-sabotage, pain, or addiction and find self-love again.
With those principles in mind, she uses hypnother apy techniques to help clients understand the root of whatever may be causing them pain, holding them back, or preventing them from realizing their full potential.

LOSE YOUR EYES. Imagine you have a wedge of a fresh, juicy, lemon in your hand. Now taste it. The flavor is tart, or maybe slight ly bitter. Then let the juices flow into your imagination.
Melissa Pas Blake of Lake Forest is building an inspiring mental health practice that helps clients heal through hypnotherapy and realigning the way they see themselves, and the world.
CHANGE MAKER
“When I discovered hypnotherapy, it helped me so quickly compared to sitting in a psychologist’s office for years. It’s really brilliant and powerful,” explains Blake, who wrote about her experiences and the power of heart healing in the best-selling book, When Women Heal: An Anthology Of The Magical Ripple Effect Of Success When Women Heal And Lead Themselves. “The fact that I over came my fear and pushed ‘send’ on my little chapter, that I went outside my comfort zone ... was life changing for me. I’m not a writer but I had the courage to do it, and that’s really when I healed the most.”
It almost feels real, right? As real as any negative thought, fear, or bad memory might feel when it creeps into your mind and causes you to sabotage your own success, happiness, or mental health.
“Everything is a choice,” says Blake, who works with clients as young as 16 to transform their emotional and mental health. “We can let go of anger, we can let go of shame, and we can let go of resentment.”
“My belief is that if I was able to heal, then healing is possible for everyone,” she says. “I help both men and women let go of negative feelings that have held them back from being their best selves. It often goes back to that hurt child who needs to feel safe and connected. Because when we don’t feel safe and connected, we don’t make good choices and it can turn into an unhealthy behavior pattern.”
Looking ahead to her fifth year in business, the hope is to create more pathways and packages to serve those in need on the North Shore and beyond.
“With heart healing, we can be the change makers in our family,” says Blake, explaining that trauma can be passed down, generation after generation. “When we heal ourselves, there’s a ripple effect to our family, our friends, and everyone we care about.”

For example, Blake believes that addiction, regardless of what form it takes, can often be the result of an inner wound that someone has been carrying with them for too“Whateverlong.
The results are often transformational.
“Do I love my job? I do,” she says. “I know I can’t change the world, but if I can change the world for one person, or 100 people, that’s a beautiful thing.”
the issue is, the underlying reason people come see me is most often some version of—they don’t feel ‘enough’ or they don’t feel like they fit in or they don’t feel connected. This causes people to go back to old habits and go back to what is familiar,” she adds.
Blake began her formal training in California with RTT pioneer Marissa Peer. Combining hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychothera py, RTT is used to tap into the subconscious mind to identify the root cause of limiting beliefs. The goal is then to transform, reprogram, and dispel the limiting beliefs. She also studied the HeartHealing® Technique with creator Natasha Leigh Bray. Weaving processes from hypnotherapy, shamanism, social work, and energy healing to deliver a holistic healing experience for the body, mind, and soul, HeartHealing® offers an integra tive approach to mental health.
When she launched Pasitive Solutions LLC in Lake Forest in 2018, many of her first clients came to her through referrals or even on Facebook. Today, she helps people from all over the world—from Israel to London to Australia—both in person and on Zoom.

Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce’s unique “Then & Now” auto showcase returns, bringing with it vintage sportscar collectors like Edmond and Tena Russ.

Take the 1953 MG TD/C that the Lake Forest couple brought to this month’s Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce “Then & Now” auto showcase. That limited-edition model came straight from the original family that bought it nearly 70 years ago.
inception. “The frame is ash, still intact, and it’s really in excellent condition. The only major modification is the addition of a roll bar and sway bar and a little tweaking to the engine. That’s why it’s such a special car.”
Ed says he found the vintage gem online in 2017, and quickly learned it was more than just another MG. This particular automobile was one of only 50 specialty cars that had been tweaked for friends of British Mo torcars on the assembly line. Twenty-five of them stayed in England; the other 25 were imported to Norfolk, Virginia.“Allof them were painted Silver Streak Grey, all of them had red wheels, and all of them had a red radia tor and red interior,” says Ed, an auto show committee member who has been participating every year since its
MERICANS have been ob sessed with automobiles for over a century now, each decade ush ering in one nifty innovation af ter another. And while there are always those people (you know who you are) who view vehicles as merely a utilitarian mode of transport, most of us have a romanticized tale (or three) about the cars of our lives and what they mean to us.
Edmond “Ed” Russ and his wife, Tena, have enough of those stories to fill a best-selling novel.

But that was just one of many magnificent automo biles on display at the October 2 “Then & Now” show case, held at West Lake Forest Train Station.

HOT WHEELS
Organized by the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce, the City of Lake Forest, and an advi sory committee of auto enthusiasts representing a wide range of cars from exotic and classic to pre- and postwar, vintage European, Rolls Royce/Bentley, and mod ern luxury speedsters, this year’s “Then & Now” show rolled though for a display of what Ed calls a century’s worth of “driveable art.”
He served as co-chair of that committee, along with fellow co-chair John Maxson. Committee members in cluded Jim Opsitnik, Shaun Carter, Steve Stitle, Dan Sobczyk, Bruce Grabenkort, Robert Ritholz, David Taylor, Michelle Bries Nichols, Joan Lynch, Max Lynch, and Mike Kalodimos. Signature sponsors included Big Door, Imperial Motors Jaguar, and Northern Trust and participating sponsors and dealerships included Hill & Stone Insurance, Audi/Porsche Exchange, Ferrari Lake Forest, Glenview Luxury Imports, Knauz Auto motive Group, Steve Foley Rolls Royce and Bentley, and Northshore Sportscars, each showcasing signature models.

Interestingly enough, the friend who convinced him and Tena to move to Lake Forest many years ago is the same fellow car enthusiast who got them involved in the showcase— Jim Opsitnik, past president of the Lake Forest Preservation Society.
Tena, who hasn’t driven an automatic in decades (she “got religion” when she met Ed and went back to driv ing stick), says she loves Road America as much as her husband.“Inever saw as many race cars or Porsches as I saw at Road America. My first trip up there, I came back with a whole lot of photographs, but they weren’t of him or his cars. They were of Mini Coopers,” she laughs. “So, as a result, I’m on my third Mini Cooper now and you can’t pry that out of my hands.”
It didn’t take long before Opsitnik, Maxson, and Ed began rallying people to get involved and the inaugural “Then & Now” showcase was unveiled in 2019.

“The auto show is a ‘then and now’ showcase so I brought an almost new Porsche as the new one and the MG as the old one,” says Ed, explaining that the whole reason he bought the 1953 MG TD/C was to replace a Porsche 356 he used to race at Road America in Elkhart Lake. “I have been instructing there since the 1970s. The cars are just so magnificent. You see a million-dollar car on the racetrack and it’s like ‘wow’.”
“That’s like the Queen Mary,” Tena chimes in.

“Joanna Rolek from the Chamber contacted Elaine and Jim and said ‘we’d like to have an event in West Lake Forest and we were thinking about a different type of car show,” Ed recalls.
To which, Tena had five words for him: “No room at the inn.”
Ed, on the other hand, has no favorites. He just loves them
“There’s no way this show could happen without Joanna,” Ed continues, giving props to Rolek and the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce com mittee. “I like to drive Porsches, race the MG, but so many cars are just fun to look at. Wish I could fit them all in the garage.”
“Although, all. there are some unusual cars I like a lot,” he says, noting Bill Knauz’s World War II Jeep and a 1941 Packard, four-door convertible they once owned.

Brennan added to his skyscraper-high pile of victories in 2018 when he launched the Brennan Rehabilitation Foundation, a 501c3, Lake Forest-based charitable organization committed to helping individuals, who have suffered cervical spinal injuries causing physi cal and cognitive disabilities, and their families and communities, by providing financial resources to help ensure a continuum of re habilitation resources and provide opportunities for individuals to ultimately reach optimal health and independence.
Chris Brennan, also a prostate cancer survivor, has received his Last Rites seven times since turning 57. Seven times. But please re frain from mentioning a cat’s nine lives in his presence.
“I was lucky,” says Brennan, who served as chairman/CEO of TGI Systems, a global visual branding company for stadiums and arenas, from 2012-2017, following an array of impressive posts mostly in the broadcast industry, including founder of One-OnOne Sports, Inc., and Premiere Global Sports President/CEO/ Board Member. “After my accident, I found out I had disability insurance. I had no idea I had signed up for it. My transition from hospital to home was softer, easier, compared to many others with my condition because of my insurance and resources.
Months later, while attending a conference in New York, he awoke at 5 a.m. with sepsis. Brennan had suffered a perforated in testine. He underwent abdominal surgery after writing a moving note to his wife, Diane, six children, and two stepchildren because he had been given a 10 percent chance of survival.
Brennan did more than survive his tumble atop boulders in The Grand Canyon State eight years ago. He threw himself into physi cal therapy from the get-go. Pain was his workout partner, daily. But he dealt with it, probably set a record for winces squeezed in a three-hour segment one day, and persevered, persevered, persevered. It also helped immensely to have been paired with a Rehabilita tion Institute of Chicago (now Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) physical trainer named Jennifer Traines—the very same Jennifer who, de cades ago, happened to be a second grade AYSO soccer teammate

Victory? Bigger than that. You could make an airtight case that Brennan has won the equivalent of a few Boston Marathons, a handful of Olympic gold medals, two Heis man Trophies, and an Ironman Triathlon since a 25-foot, freak fall off a patio during a brunch in Arizona damaged his C4 through C7 vertebrae and left him a tetraplegic (one with partial or total loss of movement in all limbs and in the torso) in 2014.

you’d have to settle for viewing a hard-fought stalemate.
Oh, and the severed spinal cord he’d incurred during neurosur gery, which kept him in an ICU unit for 34 days? Surgical error. The cut left the 1976 Loyola Academy graduate—who grew up “on the mean streets of Kenilworth” and earned Loyola Academy Athletics Hall of Fame enshrinement after rushing for 1,000 yards and averaging 10 yards per tote as a senior tailback and clocking crazy-fast times of 10.2, 22.3, and 38-flat in the 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash, and 330 low-hurdles, respectively, for the Ramblers’ track and field team—paralyzed from the neck down.

“My wife was always there to push me, to encourage me, after my accident,” Brennan says. “She’ll always be there for me. She’s been such a great partner and supporter. Special. How fortunate am I that she’s in my life?
“The daily pursuit of a healthy mind and healthy body, in the face of ad versity, is the true testament to one’s character,” Brennan says. “Such a quest is made easier by providing the economic resources to cover a victim’s therapy, equipment, prescriptions, and in-home care.”
“I offered to help her with the dishwasher the other night, but she told me, ‘No, you broke three dishes the last time you helped.’ I sometimes drop things.”
Brennan’s good fortune and strong desire to buoy the hopes of other spinal cord survivors—locally and nationally—led to the establishment of the Brennan Rehabilitation Foundation’s annual Socrates Award lifetime grants. Recipients (usually three per year) receive $1,000 every year for the rest of their lives for having dem onstrated the efforts in working to achieve personal success while pursuing the daily grind of physical rehabilitation.

Chris Ramaekers, Lake Forest Civic Orchestra’s music director, says involving student soloists dovetails with the orchestra’s mission of providing quality, com munity-based music for residents of the North Shore.

IDAN WATTS, a rising junior at Lake Forest High School, already has 14 years under his belt playing the violin. Now 17, the math is pretty easy; he started playing the violin when he was 3. While Watts is cur rently a member of his high school’s symphony orchestra, he’s looking forward to his next Wattsgig.and a number of other area high school stu dents have been selected to play as soloists for the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra’s (LFCO) upcoming 2022-2023 season, its 34th, which kicks off on October 9 at the Gorton Center’s John and Nancy Hughes Theater.
On a more personal note, Watts says one of his pri vate teachers, Charlie Pikler, wrote an addition to the first concerto the orchestra will perform on October 9. Watts says Pichler first wrote the piece for him and he initially played it on piano but this will be the first time the piece will be played with a full orchestra.
“I can definitely relate to the piece. On his gravestone, Bruch had carved, ‘Music is the language of God,’ and I think that’s just such a wonderful phrase,” says Watts. “Music is very powerful and no matter what language you speak, everyone can come and connect through mu sic and that’s something I think is very special.”
78 FOREST & BLUFF
Watts will be a featured soloist at the October 9 con cert and will be playing “Vin Concerto No. 1, Mvt. 1,” by the German Romantic Composer Max Bruch, his most well-known work.
“We’re a community orchestra from the community of Lake Forest and for the community of Lake Forest,” he explains. “The members of the orchestra are from here and the surrounding areas and they really value the orchestra both for the music-making and for camarade rie and community fellowship.”
“I feel very honored to be offered the chance. It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with an orchestra and it’s an incredible experi ence,” Watts says. “These programs really benefit young musicians by giving them more ways to share their tal ent and passion for music with the community.”
The reason the orchestra began involving student so loists in its performances was to boost community in volvement. Having local students and up-and-coming

“We look forward every year to providing rising mu sicians in the community the opportunity to play with us,” Martino says. “We Initially brought four of them in for one concert and I just remember not really being able to see my music because my eyes were tearing up seeing that they were finally able to feel that experience.”
“The first thing for me it’s a really great group of people and it’s great how everybody is really commit ted to this mission of representing and serving the Lake Forest community,” he adds. “Orchestras run the risk of becoming stale and easily falling into set patterns. What I really enjoy about working with LFCO is they’re will ing to go with newer ideas.”
These newer ideas include performing pieces by liv ing composers and premiering pieces by local compos ers, some of whom are not so well known.
“I think it comes back to community and the need to give back to the community. Music in Lake Forest has done a lot for me and so it just made sense for me to come back,” Martino says. “Then, at some point we

Howard Martino grew up in Lake Forest and played a few concerts with orchestra in its early days but took an extended hiatus before joining up again about 12 years ago. He’s now President of the organization’s Board of Directors. Like others involved in the organi zation, it’s the community aspect of the orchestra that motivates him.
“People join it for the love of making music and we are truly unique in the sense that we have received so much support from the community and from our mem bers who play for the love of it,” she says. “Over the years we’ve created a space for people in this hectic world, whether you’re an orchestra member or an audience member, to come and find a space where you can escape for a little while into something deeper and beautiful.

needed a change in direction with a music director and I kind of stepped up to the plate and started working on the Whileboard.”volunteers now pay a fee to participate in the orchestra, there’s a payoff—being able to learn from the professionals hired by the orchestra and enhance their musical skills.
On the spring 2023 calendar is a performance of “D’un matin de Printemps” by Lili Boulanger, a French composer who died quite young in the early 20th Cen tury. Ramaekers says her music isn’t played nearly as of ten as it should be, and alongside side it the orchestra is playing works from more well-known composers such as Tchaikovsky and Mozart.

“For example, the first concert we have this year we’re performing a piece by Stacy Garrop called ‘Becoming Medusa’,” Ramaekers says. “Garrop lives in Evanston and for a long time was a professor in Roosevelt Uni versity’s Music Department.”
“We look forward every year to providing rising musicians in the community the opportunity to play with us.”
“We hire section leaders who are pros to come in and help teach and drive the sections, at least the string sec tions,” he says. “The volunteer players get some benefit because they have the opportunity to become better even though they are talented already.”
“It’s a lovely thing and it’s not easy to make a com munity orchestra work, and these days we couldn’t do it without the community.”
soloists, Ramaekers says, is the best and most effective way to continue to represent the Lake Forest community.
Martino says he gets special satisfaction from the orchestra’s program to bring in guest high school solo ists like Watts. The program is offering opportunities to students who were impacted by the shutdown during the pandemic and weren’t able to play with their high school orchestras.
While most of the players in the orchestra are vol unteers (section leaders and some administrative staff are paid employees), it’s the music it produces and plays reflects its players’ collective passion for the works it undertakes, some audiences might not be familiar with.
