Luxury design studio Serena & Lily sets anchor in Winnetka.

edited by Janis MVK

B

RINGING ITS COASTAL aesthetic from the California shore to the North Shore, design-driven luxury home brand, Serena & Lily, set anchor in their newest location—right in the heart of Winnetka. Located on Gage Street, this is Serena & Lily’s 16th design shop and the second location in Illinois—the first being in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood. The design shop is charming both on the exterior and interior. The vibe is bright, airy, and coastal with beachy natural elements set in an array of coastal blues and cool tones. Showcasing furniture for the entire home, along with bedding and decor and outdoor design solutions, Serena & Lily’s details can’t be missed with signature wallpapers and upholstery greeting customers with a mix of textures and textiles—creating a luxurious, yet cozy and coastal feel, all within a 4,500-square-foot design haven. The showroom is set with model kitchens, living rooms, dining areas, bedrooms, and outdoor spaces that are thoughtfully curated to bring coastal inspiration right into homes. The displays are decorated with Serena & Lily’s signature bedding and rug collections and also highlight an assortment of lighting and accessories. There are even custom furniture options and an extensive swatch display featuring more than 300 original textile and wallpaper designs—all in that California

coastal vibe, of course. In addition, the design shop features an ever-evolving art gallery of original paintings from local artists. It has works of art featuring Chicago artists Jack Flynn, Vicky McGrath, and Megan Hinds, all of which complement the shop’s aesthetic and curated displays to give customers the full look and feel. Their expert in-house advisors offer complimentary design services. Customers can work one-on-one with the advisors either through in-person or virtual consultations and even work with advisors with in-home appointments to really bring decorating visions to life. In addition, the design shop features a creative workspace for interior designers where client meetings, private appointments, and presentations can be held during and outside of regular business hours. Serena & Lily was founded in 2003 and is known for its casual yet sophisticated look with a polished coastal aesthetic. “We’re very excited to have found a home in Winnetka’s Hubbard Woods design community,” says Lori Greeley, Chief Executive Officer of Serena & Lily. “With unmatched lakefront views and diverse architectural styles, the North Shore is a design enthusiast’s haven, and we look forward to sharing inspiration for enticing spaces with our neighbors.” For more information, visit serenaandlily.com.

BETWEEN THE BLUFFS

ODE TO THE INEVITABLE EMPTY NEST, AND NEW BEGINNINGS words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Batchell

I

T WASN’T LONELINESS. It wasn’t heartbreak. It wasn’t regret. It wasn’t sadness or melancholy. It wasn’t despair. It wasn’t wistfulness. It wasn’t loss or grief. It wasn’t nostalgia. It wasn’t longing. It wasn’t disappointment, but it sure wasn’t delight. I couldn’t put my finger on it. It felt like I had mastered a skill, but I had never before felt this emotion. Then, in an empty house, it hit me. My life’s most joyful moments, my happiest years, the most fulfilled I have ever felt, were the years I spent raising my young children. And those days were numbered. How could I be blindsided by the inevitable? How could I have truly known one day, my life’s work would, quite literally, graduate and happily walk out the door? I worked myself out of the toughest and most wonderful, blessed job I will ever know. Turns out those years of toiling with little sleep, little money, little help, little emotional reserves, and lots of little feet were the most joyful years of my life. In a blink, my kids are grown. In the thick of it, there was madness: dinners, diapers, day care, and discipline. There was crippling self-doubt, the certainty I was doing it all wrong. There was debilitating back pain. There were hideous flashes of anger, despair, and hopelessness. There was free-falling in love so deep, so powerful and so boundless it was terrifyingly vulnerable. There were parts of me, parts of my soul, I did not know existed until I had children; some parts were tender and sweet. Other parts were so dark and shadowy that I was filled with shame. Still, other parts of me winced from the wounds of my childhood not yet healed. Motherhood exposed this expanse. There were victories over shoelaces and toilet bowls and phonics that left me with a disproportionate sense of triumph and pride. There were years spent reading

the same banal books each night. There were hours laying in the grass, watching the clouds roll by. How many skinned knees have been kissed? How many baths have been drawn? How many WTFs have echoed through my head? How much needless worry kept me from being present? How much precious time was wasted trying to appear perfect? Many days, I’d pray for the strength to endure the mind-numbing monotony of daily life. And, in the next instant, my breath would be sucked from my lungs and I’d pray time would freeze so I could savor the sweetness forever. There were moments so moving they’ve imprinted on my soul. I am humbled and forever changed. My youngest leaves for college this month. The exhausting, joyful, meaningful, boring, maddening, and challenging days of raising my kids are behind me. It doesn’t make me feel washed up. It doesn’t make me feel empty. It doesn’t make me feel like the best parts of me have atrophied and, hear this loud and clear, it sure doesn’t make me want to have another baby. That is a young girl’s game. I am certain my next chapter is going to include meaningful accomplishments and experiences; the wonder of living is alive and well. I am breathlessly grateful to finally have time to focus on myself. And yet, somehow I know that anything else I accomplish in my hopefully long and healthy life, will not matter quite as much as having had the privilege of raising four funny, smart, and imperfect children. Being their mother is my greatest honor. Like an artist who must part with her best works, I am ready for my nest to empty. T-Ann Pierce is an F&B contributor and confidence coach. DATE NIGHT

GET SOCIAL

It’s rosé all day at The Hampton Social, a North Shore brunch hotspot with an evolving menu. words by Janis MVK

W

ITH ITS SIGNATURE coastal flair, The Hampton Social has quickly become the go-to hot spot for brunches and rosé for North Shore residents with an appetite for maritime-inspired food and summer-spurred cocktails. Bringing that solstice vibe and “Rosé All Day” attitude all year round, The Hampton Social offers the perfect place to soak up the rays and hold onto those long summer days where all that’s wanted and needed is to imbibe and enjoy. Whether it’s date night or a girls’ night out, The Hampton Social offers an Instagram-friendly aesthetic with its signature “Rosé All Day” lounge. Draped with a green-foliage backdrop adorned with a neon sign encouraging the rosé lifestyle, the lounge’s breezy atmosphere is completed with the main dining area, private dining space, an outdoor seating area, and a lively bar that’s usually accompanied by live music. With the perfect summer-social spirit, the coastal-inspired restaurant has a playful, yet modern-nautical feel. To fully immerse yourself in The Hampton Social lifestyle, begin with a glass or bottle of the rotating Rosé of the Day, or try the AIX, a popular rosé from France. Popular summer cocktails include the Ocean Eyes, made with Sneaky Fox vodka, coconut, lavender, butterfly pea, and lemon; or try The Honey Cove, a mixture of tea-infused bourbon, Giffard apricot, lemon, and honey. The Honey Cove is presented appropriately with a honey dipper, garnishes, and a straw adorned with a bumble bee so picture-worthy, you’ll want to tag The Hampton Social on your Instagram. The food menu is nothing short of bliss. Want to share and socialize? Set sail by treating your palettes with the Colossal Crab Cake decorated with a delicious herb salad and grilled lemon, all set atop the green goddess dressing. The hand-breaded Bang Bang Chicken is a must-have, presented with a Fresh seafood salad, slaw, oysters from the house bar-b-que, east coast and the bang-bang chili sauce so good you might want to order another as an entreé. Other light bites include the Sparkling Seafood Tower (prepare to be

impressed by this dazzling offering), Tuna Tartare, and oysters from the cold bar, or enjoy the selection of pizza, salads, and soups. Need something heavier? The Hampton Social has handhelds like the Lobster Roll served Manhattan or Maine style; or try the Smash Burger, a double patty dressed with cheddar, pickles, and mustard aioli served on an egg bun. However, it’s the summer specials that will have your mouth watering, too. If you’re a meat lover, the Mediterranean Lamb Chops, suggested to be made medium, is a must-have served with smoked tomato salad, mint yogurt, and pistachio chimichurri. Craving a summer pasta? The Summer Pesto Radiatori with roasted tomato, charred corn, pistachio, and pesto will tickle your tastebuds. Make sure to side up with the creamed sweet corn or the roasted Brussel sprouts. If you have room, finish off your experience with the Blondie Brownie with amaretto caramel, topped with toasted almond, whipped cream, and vanilla gelato. The Hampton Social is family-friendly, too, offering a kid’s menu with a burger option, chicken tenders plate, and parmesan pasta. And while fall is just around the corner, you can sip and savor summer all year long by joining the club on The Hampton Social’s website for news about exclusive events, secret menus, special offers and discounts, and receive loyalty rewards and more. Cheers!

LAKESIDE RETREAT

A new resort property in Michigan’s Harbor Country is the next best thing to having your own beach house. words by Sherry Thomas

Common area kitchen

S

OME CALL NEW BUFFALO and other lakeside towns in Harbor Country, Michigan the North Shore, west. Those with beach houses and cottages there can attest to the likelihood of running into Lake Forest or Lake Bluff neighbors while grabbing a burger at Redamak’s or another hotspot around town. And yet, not all of us have a beach house (or at least not in that locale). Enter a unique new property designed to fill that void for those who want the convenience of a private abode and its amenities without the commitment. Located on a wooded property five minutes from downtown New Buffalo, The Neighborhood Hotel Grand Beach features 14 large, rustic-luxe suites (including two, 2-bedroom/2-bath cottage homes) with all the amenities of a lakefront retreat. Stocked kitchens and a thoughtful collection of art and accessories reflect the property’s hip, modern aesthetic (think campy

chic) while paying homage to its history as a 1914 resort known as The Pinewood Lodge. Set on the site of the historic retreat—which famously hosted such heavyweight boxers as Cinderella Man and James Braddock in the early 20th century— The Neighborhood Grand Beach offers four acres of indoor and outdoor amenities including three fire pits, a pool, and The Living Room—stocked with games, a communal bar, and a vending machine filled with local favorites. In addition to in-suite kitchenettes and kitchens to prepare meals at your own pace, there is the Cowboy Cauldron, billed as “the world’s finest fire pit and grill.” The star of the “cauldron” is the Grillworks Asador, which is used by professional chefs as part of the property’s Pop-Up series (also perfect to boil soups, grill burgers, or warm your feet). If you’d rather not deal with the hassle of bringing groceries from home, pre-order from Froelich’s, a local fave. One phone call and everything you need for your stay will be delivered to your suite upon arrival, from

breakfast staples to full dinners, fresh baked pies, wine, beer, bloody Mary, and mimosa kits. And if you happen to be visiting over the weekend, throw in an order of bagels, which are reputed to some of the best of the Midwest (including Chicago). Suites range in size from a large studio to a spacious 3-bedroom/2-bath mini-apartment, making the property ideal for a multi-party celebration, girls’ weekend, or even a family reunion. The decor is classic cottage but the finishes are pure luxury, offering the beach escape you crave without sacrificing the comforts of home. Imagine waking up to the soothing sounds of nature, then grabbing coffee by the campfire surrounded by trees and fresh seaside air. From there, you can opt to relax by the pool, enjoy yoga in the woods, or venture further to explore Grand Beach (a five-minute walk away) or nearby harbor towns (hint: Greenbush Brewing Co. is just a few miles away in Sawyer). Your day might end with a barbecue on that “cauldron” grill with fresh herbs from the garden, followed by s’mores under the stars. The creators of The Neighborhood Grand Beach say the property was designed to honor the legacy of a “summer colony” that has welcomed visitors through its iconic entry gate (still there) for more than a century. In addition to the original Pinewood Lodge, Grand Beach was also home to a larger hotel and golf club. There was even a nightclub that put the resort on the map in the roaring ‘20s. It does all of those things, and more. Whether you’re looking for a last weekend escape before school starts or planning a beach sojourn during cooler fall months, The Neighborhood Grand Beach is a fantastic new option. Unless, of course, you want to buy a beach house of your own. The Neighborhood Grand Beach is located at 19400 Ravine Drive in New Buffalo, Michigan. FAMILY LAW

AMICABLE—TO BE OR NOT TO BE Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer explains why an amicable resolution to divorce is best for everyone. words by Michone J. Riewer photography by James Gustin/styling by Theresa DeMaria/hair & makeup by Leanna Ernest

D

IVORCE IS extremely expensive. The “expense” extends well beyond the cost of attorney fees. It is expensive emotionally, robs the parties of time and energy, and usually affects each member of the family. Approaching a divorce with the intention of resolving it amicably is best for everyone involved. Some lawyers claim that by fighting, the client will receive a better result. It is just not the case. The outcome of a hugely contested divorce versus a divorce resolved by agreement rarely deviates more than 5 percent. The biggest difference is the amount of fees. A medium-size divorce resolved by agreement costs 10 times less than a medium-sized divorce that goes to trial. In addition, an amicable divorce takes substantially less time, creates less stress, and allows the parties to move forward with less bitterness and resentment. This is always good but especially important when children are involved. Given these facts, the question remains: why doesn’t everyone choose an amicable divorce? Some people are so angry that they don’t make good choices. Other people have attorneys suggesting that litigation will provide them with a much better outcome. The client may have someone advising him/her who elevates the drama, distrust, and chaos rather than reducing it. Still, others want an amicable divorce but their soon-to-be ex-spouse refuses to be cordial. It’s important to find an attorney who can help you choose the right path. Select someone who will give you good counsel and keep things in perspective instead of heightening the conflict. Some attorneys handle only uncontested divorces. Other attorneys are aggressive, skilled trial attorneys. It is rare to find an attorney who will proceed amicably but has the necessary litigation skills in case it goes to trial. The search is worth it: proceeding amicably is much easier when the other side knows that if required, your attorney will go to court and achieve a fair outcome. A powerful attorney actually assists in an agreeable divorce by knowing the law, knowing what a reasonable outcome would be if they had to go to trial, and being able to negotiate a similar outcome without the expense of litigation. Divorce doesn’t have to be adversarial; you can make decisions to help avoid unnecessary drama, acrimony, and attorney fees. When interviewing a potential attorney, it’s important to ask questions

Michone J. Riewer

that help you to determine if the attorney is both a skilled litigator and is willing to help you achieve an amicable resolution. Michone J. Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234- 4445, strategicdivorce.com.

S THE MERCURY climbs its way to summer’s pinnacle, a zingy and refreshing beverage is in order. Perfect for family picnics, an evening at Ravinia, or simply puttering around in the sun, this alcoholfree drink is a true crowd pleaser. For those craving an adults-only version, add a splash of tequila, white rum, or vodka—they all make delightful pairings. WATERMELON LIMEADE Serves 6 to 8 • • • • •

12 cups cubed, seedless watermelon 1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lime juice 6-8 tablespoons honey pinch of sea salt lime wheels, for garnish

1.

Place a fine mesh sieve over a large bowl and set aside. Working in batches, add cubed watermelon to a blender and purée until smooth. This will produce about 6-7 cups of watermelon juice. Strain through the sieve to remove pulp and foam. Add lime juice, 6 tablespoons honey, and sea salt to the bowl, whisking until thoroughly combined. Taste for sweetness (this can vary greatly depending on the watermelon), adding more honey if needed. Pour into a pitcher and chill until ready to serve. ONE-LAYER LOVE of a cake, this beauty stands tall on the plate with the most tender crumb. I’ve adapted the recipe from The New York Times to include strawberries roasted with thyme and port in the cake, plus a slather of Italian buttercream and drizzle of roast strawberry sauce on top. The savory notes from the thyme and olive oil are delicious! If you like, you can serve the cake plain, with the sauce and roasted strawberries on the side.

tract. Pour mixture over strawberries in pie dish. Cover with aluminum foil. Roast for 15 minutes. Remove foil. Pour collected strawberry juice into a small jar. Set aside. Continue roasting strawberries 10 more minutes. Remove from oven and cool.

MAKE CAKE: Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan with 1 tsp of olive oil, line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper, and grease again. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda into a bowl. Set aside In the bowl of a stand mixer at high speed, beat the Ingredients sugar, eggs and lemon zest for 5 minutes until thick and fluffy. With the mixer still running, slowly drizzle in the FOR THE ROASTED STRAWBERRIES: • 8 medium strawberries, leaves and stems discarded, oil and beat until incorporated, another 2 minutes. Resliced to fill a large pie plate in one layer (Note: You duce speed to low and add milk and lemon juice. Gradwill need another 1/2 cup of strawberries to dice ually add the flour mixture and beat until just combined. Transfer two thirds of the batter to the prepared pan fresh for the top of the cake) and place the reserved roasted strawberry slices over 2 Tbsp tawny port • batter. Smooth more batter over the strawberries to fill • 1 Tbsp maple syrup just below the rim of the pan—NOTE: if you have a bit • 1 tsp vanilla or vanilla paste too much batter for your pan, discard the extra batter. • 4 thyme sprigs Bake the cake 40 to 45 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove cake from FOR THE OLIVE OIL CAKE: oven and cool (still in pan) on rack for 20 minutes. Run • 1 1/2 cups pure cane sugar a knife around the edges to release the sides of the cake • 3 large eggs at room temperature from the pan. CCORDING to Kashian Bros, you may need just a few strategic upgrades to create a more contemporary look in your traditional white kitchen. “A fun way to elevate your look is to start with the hardware,” suggests Jean Stein, co-owner of Kashian Bros. “Our designers have access to a beautiful, hand-selected array of pulls and knobs in a variety of finishes and styles. It’s almost like shopping for hand-crafted jewelry. Once piece is more breathtaking than the next.” For instance, add matte black or oilrubbed bronze pulls and knobs to your classic kitchen and you will automatically create a new aesthetic. Once you find hardware you love,

then add a new countertop and hood to create the wow! factor in your beloved kitchen. Textured or mixed-metal hardware is a surefire way to create architectural elegance in a dated space. Other lovely options include brass t-bars, crystal-embedded pulls, and themed knobs. Call Kashian Bros if you want a beautiful new kitchen or bath without the stress and anxiety of a typical home project. We take care of the entire project from start to finish, including design and all installation, even plumbing, lighting, wallpaper, and paint.

ANCIENT SYMBOL OF PROTECTION edited by Razzaq Lodhia

N STRESSFUL TIMES, should we all be wearing evil eye pendants? The evil eye is a stare that is believed to have magic powers to protect against negative spirits. This belief dates back to the 6th century B.C. Aside from the ancient meaning, the eye often represents strength and power. Barbara Parker Designs takes the traditional symbol to the next level in fine jewelry. The atelier’s 18kt evil eye pendant sets shown in briar wood and white agate set with diamonds. Not only is this a statement piece that will draw in conversation, but it will always be keeping a watchful eye over you, tirelessly offering protection and warding off negativity.

LAKE FOREST READS

Celebrating its 10th year, Lake Forest Reads—a program presented by Lake Forest Library and community partners—will read about Rosalind Franklin in the novel Her Hidden Genius , the namesake of nearby Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography provided by Lake Forest Library and Robin Subar

N

EARLY 10 YEARS AGO, Lake Forest Library—with the support of community partners including Friends of Lake Forest Library—launched Lake Forest Reads, a month-long, citywide reading program where the community reads one book. Based on the “One City One Book” program that takes place in more than 70 communities nationwide, its primary mission is to foster literacy, a culture of reading, and a sense of community. This October, Lake Forest Reads will feature Her Hidden Genius by Marie Benedict, the story of Rosalind Franklin, the scientist whose work contributed to a better understanding DNA, RNA, viruses, and more. “Every year we strive to choose a title for Lake Forest Reads that resonates with our community, that is well written, and offers an opportunity to partner with other local organizations,” says Kate Buckardt, Head of Adult Services at Lake Forest Library. “Women in science, especially a scientist studying DNA, is vitally important right now. Children searching for birth parents, law enforcement looking to convict or exonerate criminals, and families wondering how big their puppies will grow all owe their answers to Rosalind Franklin. To be able to learn about Dr. Franklin through a compelling novel is such a gift. And to have a medical center named for her, just down the road, seemed like an opportunity to learn more about her and her role in the scientific community.” The Hidden Genius, by Marie Benedict, shines a light on a woman who sacrificed her life to discover the nature of our very DNA, a woman whose world-changing contributions were often hidden by the men around her, but whose relentless drive advanced our understanding of humankind. “Marie’s book brings our aunt to life in a way that is so relatable and shows more of her kind and generous personality in addition to her intellect and commitment to scientific pursuits,” says Rosalind Franklin, niece and namesake of the subject of this year’s selected book. “The library’s choice invites a broader audience to learn about her life and one of the most important scientific discoveries of all time—the secret of life. It’s also won-

derful that the library has chosen to highlight a woman scientist that is connected deeper in this community by Rosalind Franklin University, which serves local residents and educates exceptional future healthcare professionals throughout the United States. It’s great to have partnerships like this to bring people together.” As part of Lake Forest Reads, Lake Forest Library will host three separate events with Benedict, offering three different opportunities for the community to connect, ask questions, and get an understanding of the author, her writing process, and the novel. All programs and related events are free and open to the public. “Lake Forest Reads provides us the chance to bring together a community of both avid readers and readers who may not always have time to finish a title but can still enjoy the related events,” Buckardt adds. “Each year, we partner with others in the community to host discussions and events—everything from cooking classes, art projects, discussions, historical lectures, writing contests, and movies that relate to a theme in this work or novel.” The success of a program like this is largely based on its partnerships with local organizations. Lake Forest Library has worked with Ragdale, Lake Forest Book Store, Gorton Community Center, Dickinson Hall, and the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff in past years to name just a few. Lake Forest College also part of this esteemed group is proud to continue its collaboration with Lake Forest Library in rolling out this annual community program. “The partnership between Lake Forest College and Lake Forest Library is a wonderful opportunity to share the pleasures of a community read,” says Davis Schneiderman, Krebs Provost and Dean of Faculty at Lake Forest College. “What’s better than a good book? It’s when cultural organizations sponsor activities of this kind, demonstrating by their programming not only the value of a great read, but the way in which the activities that surround a great read can animate important conversations.” To learn more about Lake Forest Reads or to register for an event this October, visit lakeforestlibrary.org. LIVE SAVER

As fentanyl overdose deaths skyrocket, Ellen Cook Humphrey explains the drug’s dangers and urges community members to learn what they can do to be proactive and save lives. words by Kelli Doremus photography provided by Humphrey family photo of Ellen Humphrey by Robin Subar

I

N JUNE 2021, Lake Forest’s Nick Humphrey died at the age of 22 from accidental fentanyl poisoning in the form of counterfeit pills. Since his death, his mom, Ellen Cook Humphrey, has been raising awareness about the grave consequences of the opioid’s spread in the hopes of preventing more unnecessary deaths. Nick’s death is part of a substantial increase in overdose deaths from nonprescription fentanyl. Between April 2021 and April 2022, more than 100,000 Americans—a record number—died from overdoses, according to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of these deaths were linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl, a legal prescription pain medication that is now found in many street drugs. Cheap and 50 to 100 times more powerful than heroine, it’s also lethal. “When this happened a year ago, you never heard anything about fentanyl, and if you did you usually heard it in conjunction with pain control for patients in the medical community,” Humphrey says. “Now, not a day goes by that it’s not mentioned in multiple news outlets, and the Drug Enforcement Administration has been desperately trying to get the word out. However, government warnings appear to be falling on deaf ears.”

The game has changed. People who use street drugs often aren’t aware that they’re taking fentanyl—people like Nick. “There is a huge difference between dying from fentanyl and fentanyl poisoning,” Humphrey adds. “My son was poisoned.” Nick’s death occurred a few weeks after his college graduation, when he returned home for a weekend. After going to a local bar to watch a basketball game with friends, he appeared to have fallen asleep on the living room couch while watching TV. The next morning, Humphrey and her other son, Davis, found him in the same position, and when he suddenly stopped snoring that’s when they realized something wasn’t right—he had stopped breathing. Humphrey called 911 and immediately started giving Nick CPR. He was in cardiac arrest. “It felt like it was forever until the ambulance came,” Humphrey recalls. “I think they administered five to seven Narcan doses. There were IV lines hanging from lights. It was traumatic beyond belief for my younger son and me to be watching this.” While reflecting on a loved one’s overdose, it’s easy to wonder what you could have done to prevent it.

“We didn’t know what we didn’t know,” Humphrey says. “There was no reason to believe Nick was struggling or that he relapsed. He would have known that taking half an oxy would be like a glass of wine, it was not some suicidal event. The fact that it took so long to stop breathing shows there was little fentanyl in there.” Even the smallest amount of fentanyl can be deadly—as little as two to three milligrams. Following Nick’s death, Humphrey worked closely with detectives from the Lake Forest Police Department. After several weeks of waiting, she learned that a small box that she saw under the couch while on her knees performing CPR on Nick contained one and a half pills. These pills were stamped with markings indicating they were oxycodone. However, further analysis revealed these pills to be laced with fentanyl—his official cause of death. “With our young people headed back to school next month, as well as the terrifying rise of fentanyl now being cut into everything—including marijuana bought from your trusted dealer—it’s more important than ever to get this information out,” Humphrey says. Substance abuse is, unfortunately, common among teenagers and college students. Freshman year at University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) was tough for Nick, who was studying agriculture—he wanted to sustainably feed the world. “During that first year there was a lot of anxiety and stress, he was ashamed of his disability,” Humphrey recalls, explaining that Nick had been diagnosed with a learning disability in 10th grade. “I took him to a specialist for his major addiction problem. We decided that a wilderness outdoor retreat was the best fit. He

went back to school to finish the semester and maintain his status as Sigma Alpha Epsilon—Wisconsin Alpha (SAE) member, and then he left for the retreat. And when he came home 37 days later, he was one hundred percent a different man.” Upon returning to campus, Nick and his mom agreed that he needed to be in some sort of facility, and McBurney Disability Resource Center welcomed him. “He had a counselor and therapist, all the support he needed, accommodations,” Ellen says. “He had straight As the next three years and then graduated. As far his friends, brothers, and me knew, he was not using pills.” With the crisis growing, Humphrey’s focus is harm reduction—a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. She stresses that awareness and preparation are all it take to save a life. On top of carrying fentanyl test strips in your wallet or purse, the nasal spray naloxone, also known as Narcan, can instantly reverse an opioid overdose if administered as soon as someone has passed out or isn’t breathing normally. “My next move is to implement ‘Nick’s Laws’ first signed at the state level, then we go national,” Humphrey says. “We need to remove shame, stigma, and judgment around drug use. The idea is that every student that comes into a state-run university should receive at least one fentanyl test trip, one Narcan nasal spray, and a condom—so it’s not all about the drugs.” For now, many nonprofit organizations will ship you harm reduction supplies anonymously and free of charge, such as Live4Lali, located in Arlington Heights. These are lifesaving resources and just a couple of tools in a fight that needs all the help it can get. “Regardless of your stance on recreational drug use, it’s impossible to deny the reality that hundreds of thousands of people in our country are dying from this epidemic,” Humphrey adds. “But if you have what you need, you can save a life. And if understanding the cause of Nick’s death saves even one life, he will not have died in vain.”

Olympic Gold Medalist Hilary Knight finds new ways to enjoy the sports she loves. words by David A. F. Sweet

G

ROWING UP IN Lake Forest in the 1990s, nothing pleased Hilary Knight more than to be dropped off to play hockey for the whole day at the Winter Club. “They’d have to pull us off the rink, whether it was snowing or raining,” said Knight. “How fortunate we were—to have that freedom was great.” Even today it’s not easy to get Knight off the rink. She recently returned from the Winter Olympics in Beijing, where the Team USA women’s hockey team nabbed a silver medal, Knight’s third. The oldest member of the squad at 32, the forward has played more games during her four Olympics (including her goldmedal-winning one in 2018) than any other Team USA women’s player. And even if she’s not skating at a rink, she’s broadcasting from one. Knight started working as an ESPN analyst for NHL games last year. “It’s been a great learning curve to see how a show is

put together,” she said. “There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work. It’s been a lot of fun to try to explain the game. My goal is to get better every time.” Knight is greatly interested in seeing a women’s pro hockey league flourish, similar to the WNBA. Though attempts over the years have not spurred much excitement—such as the Premier Hockey Federation, which only consists of six teams—she believes a sustainable one will emerge eventually. “The sport is starved for a true professional league,” said the Sun Valley, Idaho resident. “Eventually a young girl signing up for hockey will see a career path. It won’t just be making a national team.” At the Winter Club and with the Falcons in Highland Park, Knight often had to play on boys’ teams as a youngster. When she learned how to check, it was

through Murphy’s Bad Boys program. But when she attended Choate Rosemary Hall, she joined a girls’ team— and uncovered a much different game. “On the women’s side, it’s more angles and maneuvering your body,” said the 5-foot-11 star. “It’s a different skill set than the boys.” After playing seven days a week there, including with a separate Connecticut team, Knight headed to the University of Wisconsin. Despite success at Choate, she knew immediately she faced a different level of competition. “It was eye-opening,” she said. “I was joining a team of established players. You have kids who are faster and more skilled. What a way to learn.”

While there, the Badgers earned two national championships. Not only were her 47 goals as a junior the most in the nation; Knight set the all-time mark for career goals by both women and men at Wisconsin with 143. Will she go for a fifth Olympics in 2026? “It’s a tough, long road,” she said. “Number one is loving the game and showing up. But number two is having an impact in the locker room and on the ice. If those boxes are filled, I see doing that in 2026.” But don’t expect her to be wearing her hard-earned gold medal much until then. Said Knight, “The medals get heavier and bigger for every Olympics. That one from 2018 will put you in a chokehold.” This story is reprinted with permission from Classic Chicago magazine at classicchicagomagazine.com.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

Buyers and sellers in the currently red-hot North Shore real estate market need an experienced agent who knows the territory. They can find one in Lake Forest’s Joanna Koperski. words by Mitch Hurst

T

HE CURRENT HOT REAL ESTATE on the North Shore offers many challenges for buyers and sellers. With record low inventory, many homes are sold before they ever hit the MLS, or the Private Listing Service for that matter, and most receive multiple offers. While it’s a seller’s market, potential sellers who want to upsize or downsize must consider where they’ll go if they want to stay on the North Shore. Under the current market conditions, finding an experienced agent with a strong knowledge of the local community can make all the difference. Joanna Koperski, a broker with @properties in Lake Forest, offers that knowledge and experience to her clients. Ranked among the top five percent of real estate brokers in Illinois, Koperski has resided in Lake Forest since 1986 and brings a rare business and marketing savvy to the table, having been the CEO of a nationally recognized creative design firm. “The advantage of experience is one of the most important assets supporting and shaping the countless decisions confronting us as agents on a daily basis,” Koperski says. “In today’s aggressive market, there’s benefit from the sense of calm a wealth of experience affords both buyers and sellers. Including the ability to recall a library of past occurrences in order to apply them to current difficult situations is priceless.” Koperski says we are definitely in a heated sellers’ market with demand exceeding supply and new listings barely going live as they are gobbled up by impassioned and competing buyers. Multiple offers are commonplace, as are offers above list price. “This heated activity primarily advances the interests of sellers, often bringing them a profitable and quick conclusion to an event most of them expected to be drawn out and stressful,” she says. “Experience in these conditions becomes a serious resource for sellers, guiding them calmly and carefully through the various convoluted labyrinths of the ‘new normal’ for these deals.” With the current market favorable for sellers and interest rates on the rise, Koperski recommends that anyone who has been considering a move to list as soon as possible to take full advantage of the current seller-positive conditions. “Any delay in moving forward will allow these increasing interest rates to negatively affect buyers’ purchasing power,” she says. “This will certainly dampen current market enthusiasm, with far-reaching repercussions.” Many of those currently looking for homes on the North Shore are families with children, and Koperski’s knowledge of the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff area, accumulated over her decades of residing in the community, offers migrating families a database of knowledge to tap. She’s a true ambassador for Lake Forest and its

refined country ambience. “Lake Forest has a wonderful village ambience replete with prime shopping and restaurants, and that magnificent lake with its welcoming beaches,” she says. “After two years of restricted living forced upon us, we have come to realize that our homes are priceless in the safety, security, and comfort they offer.” She adds that choice is no longer influenced by necessity—it is now influenced by lifestyle preferences—and that Lake Forest has much to offer. For her, helping match families with the right home is what matters. “What a pleasure to be able to participate in assisting clients so directly in making their best life choices,” she says. Joanna Koperski is with @properties, 600 N. Western in Lake Forest, 847-668-0096, atproperties.com.

areas to restore volume. Fillers such as Restylane or Juvéderm are another option. Laser resurfacing, plasma peels, and/or injections are often employed to correct the fine lines, wrinkles, or skin texture. All of the above procedures are often done at once depending upon what is needed. This can only be determined after a careful exam. The art of facial rejuvenation is to create a perfectly natural face that looks refreshed and youthful. There truly is an “art” to this, involving far more than just injections and fillers. Patients have choices and should seek out an expert who is comfortable with these techniques.

M

any patients who I see in consultations think they need a facelift. What they really need to address is the aging process around the mouth, which is not corrected by a traditional facelift. As we age, the distance between the base of the nose and upper lip lengthens and the corners of the mouth droop. The lips lose volume and thin out, and wrinkles and vertical lines appear. There are various options to restore and create a more youthful mouth. First is a lip lift, where a small incision is made at the base of the nose and an ellipse of skin is removed to shorten the distance and create a fuller lip. The droop of the mouth’s corners is addressed by excising a “valentine” ellipse of skin, creating a lift. This improves the “marionette” lines and corrects an angry or sad expression. Lastly, the lower lip loses volume, and if deemed too For additional information, visit bodybybloch.com or Dr. Bloch thin, an incision is made in the central lower lip. HE FOUNDER of a successful children’s clothing line, author of an influential parenting blog, and mother of five children, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece is constantly asked how she manages to do it all—raise her kids and run her business while leading an active social life. So many of these queries—about proper etiquette for children in our fast-paced, technology-centered world—led her to recognize the need for a modern handbook on children’s manners. Manners Begin at Breakfast: The Essential Guide to Modern Etiquette for Children addresses rules of etiquette, including basic table manners, social media, fashion dos and don’ts, and party conversation—Illustrated with charming, specially commissioned watercolors and written in a lively, conversational style, it’s the perfect book for the fall social season. mariechantal.com.
