Healthy legs are festive legs

All of our treatments are minimally invasive,” Dr. Woloson says. “Every procedure is performed in an office setting. I’m one of the most experienced and efficient physicians using these technologies in the country. We treat the patient’s symptoms and also provide a good visual result. There is no down time and the patients come back for their two-week appointment already feeling so much better.”

S WE WRAP the final issue of 2021, I find myself reflecting on all that has transpired over the last 12 months. Although I have only been your editor for a short time, we share a world experience that leaves us forever changed. The good news is, we’ve come a long way since last December and can look forward to holiday events and celebrating with loved ones again his Christmas season. It was with that in mind that we put together this December issue, one that is filled with themes of inspiration and hope. The experience of being at home for the majority of 2020 and much of 2021 changed the way we work,

the way we interact with friends, and even the way we exercise. In our cover feature story, Movement, the gorgeous Jill Borega shows us how she took her everyday exercise regimen and inspired us to virtually take it to the mat and work out in our homes. Another feature spotlights how our beloved Ragdale continues to expand its local reach to include more artists and impact even more communities in our area and beyond. We also sit down with Steve Pemberton to discuss the Lake Forest author’s second book, The Lighthouse Effect: How Ordinary People Can Have an Extraordinary Impact in the World. These moving stories about human kindness are the perfect way to reflect about the world we live in and how together, we can make it better. Sprinkled throughout these pages you will also find gift ideas, delicious holiday recipes, and a special Travel & Style section that pairs an escape to Santa Barbara with sumptuous winter accessories. With that, your December 2021 issue awaits. May your holiday season be bright and filled with joy.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK! Lake Forest High School Girls Tennis Team takes second at state. words by Mitch Hurst photography provided by families of LFHS

ONGRATULATIONS go out to the Lake Forest High School Girls Tennis team and Head Coach Denise Murphy for tying for second place at the Illinois State Finals Tournament along with Stevenson High School and New Trier Township High School. Hinsdale Central finished in the top spot. The tournament was held October 21 to 23 at Buffalo Grove High School and surrounding Courts. Sophomore Isabelle Chong and Junior Lainey O’Neil fought through six rounds of tough matches

to become State Champions in doubles, while junior Autumn Rabjohns, younger sister of two-time State Champion Kiley Rabjohns, finished second in singles, a very competitive field. This is big news for the community of Lake Forest and the Lake Forest Girls Tennis Team, perennial regulars at the State Tournament under Coach Murphy. Since 2001, the team has won six state titles and, including this year, has finished runner up four times.

OMEN United of Lake County sold out its signature fundraising event, Power of the Purse. It included an auction bidding on items such as designer bags, purses, and baskets. The sold-out event is the organization’s signature fundraising event and was held on November 7, at Royal Melbourne Country Club in Long Grove. Power of the Purse celebrates women, friendship, and philanthropy. “Women United is a powerful network of more than 120 women who enable each other to leverage our passions, ideas, expertise, and resources to ensure children living in Lake County’s most vulnerable communities are prepared for kindergarten and

Attendees also had the opportunity to send underserved children to the United Way of Lake County’s Kindergarten Countdown Camp and buy books and toys for preschool learning centers in Lake County’s low-income communities. One hundred percent of all event proceeds and items purchased support early learning programs through the organization’s Little Kids, Big Futures Fund. The fund has raised and made grants of $850,00 since 2014. Among the sponsors of the in-person event are Proctor & Gamble, Great Lakes Credit Union, Law Offices of Judy Maldonado, and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital Nurses. Raffle sponsors include Frances Simons, Baird & Warner; Aon; Austin’s Saloon & Eatery; and Sysmex.

NURTURING AND EMERGING Ragdale embraces its Midwest roots. words by Erika Carey photography by Robin Subar hair & makeup by Leanna Ernest

HERE IS A pervading peace at Ragdale at the end of the fall season. The sprawling, pastoral grounds contain colorful clusters of fallen leaves and native plants holding onto the last days of autumn. In the distance, the expansive prairie is a breathtaking vista of texture and color. Inside the Ragdale house, the former summer retreat of Arts and Crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, artists prepare to return home, moving quietly throughout the space, imbuing it with a sense of change. A splendid dining table, where artists share evening meals together, is unoccupied, except for a centerpiece of rich, jeweltoned flowers. Roland Kulla, a Chicago painter and former three-time

artist-resident of Ragdale, points out that Shaw embraced the Midwest ethic that everyone around the table is considered equal. “At Ragdale, emerging and established artists share conversation, time and space, and of course, a wonderful meal together around the table. Everyone is equal.” Executive Director Michael Cleavenger intends to draw on Shaw’s shared table philosophy within and outside of the bucolic Ragdale property in 2022. “Accessibility is a priority for us,” says Cleavenger. “That includes accessible spaces for artist residents, programs that engage our surrounding communities, and opportunities for local students and teachers to nurture art into being.” Ragdale works with schools from Chicago to Kenosha to share a talented pool of artists with the community. as young as kindergarten and up to college-level receive unique lessons from creative professionals and engage in direct dialogue with creative makers and producers, reaffirming the importance of art as part of an expansive education. Ragdale in Schools is a free program makes the most of Ragdale’s vast network of art and design professionals to provide an engaging retreat and “arts lab” for teachers and students. Onsite and offsite programs that foster healthy self-expression, community engagement, cultural exchange, and career development are led by Ragdale artist fellows, who represent an extensive range of artistic experiences and talents. Programs include teacher retreats, student workshops, high school art intensives, and many more. In 2022, Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep in Waukegan is partnering with Ragdale to create a series of art exhibitions that will be organized, installed and curated entirely by students working with Ragdale staff. The in-school program will culminate in a series of performance-based open mic events at La Mesita de Martin, a student-led café at the school where the artistic installations will be showcased. Alongside school partnerships, Ragdale’s education initiatives include partnering with other community-focused institutions. One exciting new collaboration will include the Highwood Public Library, which has functioned as a library and community center since the pandemic. This partnership will bring Ragdale fellows into the Highwood community for a series of public programs featuring artists leading hands-on creative projects. Ragdale looks forward to resuming its Teacher Retreat this year. The retreat offers teachers in Lake and Cook counties a professional development opportunity. Offered over two separate weekends (spring and fall), Ragdale introduces educators to teaching artists who lead workshops and activities such as bookbinding or painting as well as photography, meditation, and soundwalks. Communal dinners, prairie walks, and individual time in Ragdale’s studios and on campus provide plenty of opportunities for teachers to relax, reinvigorate, and of course, explore or create new art while sharing resources and ideas with fellow educators. Ragdale plans to resume its annual High School Arts Week this year. The event, which takes place next July, provides local high school students with intensive, week-long workshops in creative writing, visual art, performance, and new this year, dance and choreography. The latter will take place in Ragdale’s newly opened, fully accessible Studio House of Dance and Music, The Sybil Shearer Studio, a 2,500 square-foot state-of-the-art building for dancers, choreographers, and musicians. Named in honor of the iconic modern dancer, Sybil Shearer, the stunning studio will host a one-week themed residency for Chicago’s Deeply Rooted Dance Theater company in 2022. Deeply Rooted brings a creative and diverse aesthetic to contemporary dance by uniting modern, clas-

sical, American and African American traditions in dance and storytelling. “We have such respect for Deeply Rooted’s work, their vision and values, and we’re thrilled to be able to host them on our campus. Who knows what work will be incubated or finished during their time at Ragdale? When an end product is ready, bringing them back to campus for a summer Ragdale Ring performance for the community to enjoy would be wonderful,” says Ragdale Board President Beth Boyd. It’s obvious that Ragdale is a nurturing, generative environment for its artist-residents. And despite the legions of artists who have gone on to create great works, Ragdale remains true to its Midwest roots. Its bookcases are filled with best-selling fiction writers, prolific poets, and esteemed essayists, but they share shelf space with dozens of other Ragdale alumni writers. Like its dinner table, the bookshelf has a space for everyone. Ragdale is one of the most highly regarded artists’ communities in the country and the largest interdisciplinary artist residency in the Midwest. ICTURE A LIGHTHOUSE. There it stands, a tower of strength and comfort, tall and firm and reliable. See it? Good. Need a light, be it atop calm waters or troubled waters? It’ll deliver, unwaveringly. “A lighthouse,” Lake Forest author Steve Pemberton says, “is the most selfless structure, one that has never needed technology. It’s there to guide you, to help you. A lighthouse is a most humble resource.”

Pemberton’s second book features 10 lighthouses with heartbeats. Launched in late September, it’s titled, The Lighthouse Effect: How Ordinary People Can Have an Extraordinary Impact in the World (Zondervan, 240 pages). “The idea to write about impactful people around me and others came to me while I was writing my first book,” the positive-to-the-core Pemberton says, referring to the memoir A Chance in the World: An Orphan Boy, a Mysterious Past, and How He Found a Place Called Home (2012), which was made into a 2017 movie.

“(The book) opens your eyes to those who are quietly heroic. You will reflect on the lighthouses in your own life and be reminded that the greatest heroes are alongside us—and within us.”

“Imagine how devastating that must have been for such a young person,” says Pemberton, the father of three—sons Quinn, 21, and Vaughn, 19, and daughter Kennedy, 16—with his wife of 24 years, Tonya. “Guess what Rick is doing now,” Pemberton continues. “He lives in Lake Forest, and he’s an OB-GYN doctor. Rick chose to devote his life to medicine after watching a life depart in his presence. And now he’s helping people as they enter life.” R.J. Peete, son of Holly and former University of Southern California/NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, is the Los Angeles Dodgers’ clubhouse attendant, or, as Pemberton claims in the book, “the lifeblood of the clubhouse.” R.J. was diagnosed with autism and told by doctors, at a young age, that he’d never be able to speak. Pemberton first met Holly Peete in Chicago, where she spoke at a conference. None other than R.J., using his vocal cords, introduced his mother to the audience. Pemberton, who lived in Highland Park from 2011-2018, has been the chief human resources officer for Workhuman since the end of 2017. Co-headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, and Framingham, Massachusetts, Workhuman is a mission with a company that makes work more human for every person on the planet. It helps the world’s leading brands build winning cultures that leverage the power of human connection. There might not be a better human-occupation fit than the Steve Pemberton-Workhuman one. “The humble gestures of kindness that change the course of our lives can shift the course of America too,” Pemberton shares near the end of his warm invitation on The Lighthouse Effect book jacket. “(The book) opens your eyes to those who are quietly heroic. You will reflect on the lighthouses in your own life and be reminded that the greatest heroes are alongside us—and within us.” Powerful words. Brilliant insights. “It’s a call to action,” Pemberton sums. Some 23,000 lighthouses, Pemberton reports, still stand worldwide today. Not counting Steve Pemberton and the human beacons he spotlights in his book.

“I wanted to share the stories of the tremendously kind people who went out of their way to help me at a young age, as well as tell the inspiring stories of people who will restore your faith in humanity.” But the 54-year-old Pemberton, who was subjected to constant abuse from a cruel foster family while growing up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, doesn’t just craft accounts of meaningful, caring folks—10 chapters, 10 lives—who embody beacons of hope in a world heavy on distrust and heavier on disillusionment. The former Walgreen Co. human resources executive also reveals the motivations that steered his me-last subjects to put everybody else first. Daily. Claire Levin was a four-limbed life preserver for an 11-year-old Steve when he needed to stay above water in a cold, scary household. Levin gave books to Steve. Boxes of books. Steve hid and read and turned pages. It allowed Steve to escape, without budging. Books made him think about something other than tomorrow’s terror. “I asked Claire, ‘Why? Why did you provide so many books for me?’ ” Pemberton recounts. “She told me, ‘Because it’s something my mother would’ve done.’ ” Steve was 16 when he no longer had to live with his foster family. John Sykes, a high school teacher and counselor, served as Safety Net No. 2 for Steve, letting the teen live with him for a year-and-a-half and paving the path to Steve’s matriculation at Boston College. “John loved education, especially literature,” Pemberton says. “He also loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was, essentially, an adult teen, with quite the personality—a rebellious personality. There was a lot of depth to John. “I will be forever grateful for a bachelor who put his life on hold to take care of me and guide me.” Pemberton devotes a chapter in The Lighthouse Effect to Rick Rock, who, at the age of 16, endured a traumatizing Steve Pemberton’s book The Lighthouse Effect is available at Father’s Day. Rick’s father, Robert, suffered a heart attack on all book platforms, including amazon.com and barnesandnoble. com, and where books are sold. that Sunday and died … in Rick’s arms.

N A TIME WHERE public libraries are having to justify their relevance, the City of Lake Forest has a community of supporters working to ensure its legacy. “The library plays such an important role in our city,” says Diana Terlato, president of the Library Foundation Board. “It’s the one place in our community where people of all ages gather. There’s really no other place like it.” The Lake Forest Library was originally chartered on July 4, 1898, by Mayor Edward F. Gorton and opened on the second floor of city hall on June 24, 1899. The Library moved to its current location in 1931. The present library building, designed by architect Edwin H. Clark (who also designed the Brookfield Zoo and the Winnetka Village Hall), was dedicated on June 7, 1931. It was built as a library and given as a gift to the City of Lake Forest by Mrs. Charles H. Schweppe and Mrs. Stanley Keith in memory of Mrs. Keith›s first husband, Kersey Coates Reed. The building of the library was overseen by the library president, Alfred E. Hamill, a wealthy book collector, poet, investment banker, and friend of David Adler, who had designed Hamill’s east Lake Forest estate. The library was built in the Art Deco style popular in the 1920s and 1930s. It follows a classic symmetrical plan around a central domed rotunda, similar to the 1929 Shedd Aquarium. The library’s rotunda houses the Kersey Coates Reed memorial stone relief of “The Archer” by Oskar J. W. Hansen (1892– 1971) and the extraordinary Nicolai Remisoff (1887–1975) murals. It’s this rotunda that has been under a blue tarp for the last three years awaiting repair. The Lake Forest Library has a Library Board. This nine-member board, established by city ordinance in 1898, sets the strategy and manages the library operations with thedirector. The members of the board are selected by the caucus and appointed by the mayor with approval by the city council. Trustees serve a maximum of two three-year terms. Officers are elected annually in July. Supporting the Library Board are two 501 (c)(3) organizations— the Friends of Lake Forest Library and the Lake Forest Library Foundation. Both organizations are comprised of volunteers who support the library’s mission to inspire lifelong learning, promote the free and respectful exchange of ideas, and build community. The Friends of Lake Forest Library raise funds through book sales, Friends memberships, and monetary and book donations, all of which make a huge difference to Lake Forest Library and the community. Since its founding in 1976, the Friends have raised more than two million dollars. The Lake Forest Library Foundation, founded in 2019, has been charged with raising and managing funds through the 2020–2021 capital campaign for the renovation and expansion of the Lake Forest Library. They have established a robust endowment for the future of the library—including the purchase of library materials, enhancement of services, activities, programs, and special projects, and to maintain and improve facilities. “When the Library Board discovered that the dome was in need of significant repair, they decided it would make sense to take a holistic look at what other renovations to the building and infra-

structure were necessary,” explains Terlato, a long-time advocate for the library who was asked to lead the library’s foundation. The Library Board then engaged an architectural firm to work with them to develop a comprehensive plan on how to best update the library building for the future, make it compliant with the American Disabilities Act, and fix the dome. “All of the Library Board’s meetings are open to the public,” says Terlato. “In one of our early meetings to discuss the dome’s repair last year, some photos were shared for purposes of discussing how the library could be expanded. Unfortunately, they were misinterpreted as being final. This wasn’t the case at all, and we feel badly that people took them as such.” Because repairs to the dome have been delayed in trying to decide how to move forward with larger-scale renovations to the library, the Library Board has decided to separate the repair project as a first priority so that it can begin. “At the end of September, we sent out an RFQ [request for qualifications] to qualified parties to bid on the repair project,” says Library Board President John Johnson, who began his term in July after volunteering at the library since 2018. “We wanted to be sure that the respondents were qualified to repair and restore the dome. The Building Committee held an open public meeting soliciting input on the criteria that should be included. The Building Committee held a subsequent open meeting for the public to include any questions ‘as if they were in the room’ interviewing the qualified respondents. Every effort is being made to engage the community in this process. We hope to decide on who we will move forward with by December 1, and then begin the actual work on the dome early next year.” The Library Board believes passionately in restoring the building to its original grandeur, while seriously considering improvements that will be for the better of the community. “I, personally, would like to see us move the children’s library out of the basement,” says Terlato. “There are a lot of good reasons to do this, but it will be up to the Library Board to determine the details of any expansion project. Additionally, they will have to proceed through all of the approval and permitting required by the city—all of which the public has access to.” The purpose of the foundation is to raise money to support the Library Board and build the endowment. To date, the Foundation Board has secured more than $2 million for the library’s endowment and renovation efforts. “The city is pleased to see that work is progressing toward restoring the library dome,” says George Pandaleon, mayor for the City of Lake Forest. “This project is a great example of how raising an endowment fund will serve the community by assuring that funds are available to help address the challenges of preserving and protecting a unique and remarkable historic building such as the library. I look forward to seeing many in the community come forward to support our treasured library long into the future.” To learn more about the Library Foundation, Friends of Lake Forest Library, or to see updates on the renovation progress, visit lakeforestlibrary. org. WEALTH MANAGEMENT

BOUTIQUE APPROACH

When it comes to wealth management, Steven Esposito of Morgan Stanley brings more than three decades of experience and a track record for curating custom portfolios for his clients. words by Sherry Thomas

I

F STEVEN ESPOSITO has learned anything in his more than 37 years of managing high net worth portfolios, it’s to never panic. Esposito started in the wealth management business in 1983 and has experienced five market crashes and now, a pandemic. “It’s never boring,” he says. The one piece of advice he shares with his clients is that wealth management is not about finding the next hot stock. Rather, it’s about risk management. “An investor can never eliminate risk; they can only mitigate it,” explains Esposito, Executive Director, Senior Portfolio Management Director, and Wealth Advisor for Morgan Stanley. “If your family wealth is properly allocated, market turbulence is an opportunity and not a crisis.” The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley brings a boutique approach to wealth management—one that assists long-time customers with everything from estate planning strategies and portfolio management to retirement planning, trusts, and philanthropy. Esposito knows from experience that portfolios continually evolve as the years progress. “I remember a long time ago, a very wealthy client said to me: ‘I’m already rich; don’t make me poor’,” he says. “I never forgot that comment and it’s a cornerstone of what we do at the Lake Forest Group. We have had two severe stock market crashes in the last 11 years, and if investors haven’t learned how to properly balance their assets in that time, they never will.” Esposito and his team pride themselves on a very personal, boutique approach. “We don’t do cookie cutter portfolios, or create portfolios via a software program,” he says. “Every portfolio is managed independently and uniquely, along with some good old fashioned wealth management—all while benefiting from the global financial resources of Morgan Stanley. It’s the best of both worlds.” Esposito’s advice has been sought out by major media organizations, including WGN TV and radio; WBBM’s “Noon Business Hour”; WIND radio; Fox News; ABC-7 News; CBS News; NBC News; the Chicago Tribune; Chicago Sun-Times; and Crain’s Chicago Business. The Lake Forest Group has approximately 175 households under their management as of April 15, 2021, the vast majority who have worked with Esposito for 12 years or more—including some who’ve

38 44

been with him for more than 30 years. It’s no wonder then that he has made Forbes magazine’s “Best in State” wealth manager’s award every year he entered. “It’s a very personal operation here in downtown Lake Forest. We emphasize personal attention, number one. I’m like the family CFO in addition to the asset management, we discuss the trusts, wills, etcetera. You have to review everything,” says Esposito. “Morgan Stanley is one of the premier global managers on the planet right now and the resources of this firm are incredible.” Navigating financial markets has become more complex than ever and last year’s pandemic threw in a wild card that no one could have seen coming. “That’s when you need a seasoned veteran on your side. I’ve learned from nearly four decades of experience—not from a textbook or TV— when to deploy capital. Deploying capital at the scariest moments and liquidating during market euphoria is the most difficult thing to get people to do,” he explains. “My responsibility as a wealth manager is to protect your family’s wealth first. We do our best to calculate our client’s risk tolerance—along with their needs, desires, and investment goals for their families and future generations.” Esposito’s minimum account size is $1.5 million. The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley is located at 207 E. Westminster Avenue, Suite 300, in Lake Forest. For more information, call 847-604- 7321 or email steven.esposito@morganstanley.com. BETWEEN THE BLUFFS

THE ART OF HAPPY HOLIDAYS words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Bachtell

T

HE FIRST HOUSE we lived in in England was a twohundred-and-fifty-year-old row house, tiny, but tall. Our so cute, traditional English kitchen was in the basement. Stone stairs, wonky and well worn, rose to the first floor where there was a cramped entrance hall and ‘lounge’. The loo on that level was so small, just pulling your knickers up and down was physical comedy that you’d swear you’d seen on a Mr. Bean episode. The toilet had a handle that required pumping until enough suction built up to flush. You think it is hard getting boys to flush a toilet in the USA? Let me tell you. Try training boys to pump a toilet handle. It was a nightmare. Upstairs were two bedrooms and a ‘box’ room. The ‘box’ room fit only a crib and a tiny dresser. In the bedroom at the tip-top of the house, there was a skylight on the slanted ceiling that popped open offering spectacular views of the city ~ like soaring the sky in Willie Wonka’s glass elevator. I spent the first nine or ten months of our time in England drunk on charm and the fragrance of climbing roses that grew like wildflowers covering the brick wall of our back garden. One neighbor played classical music on the piano, the notes drifted sleepily through the thick stone walls. We shared another wall with an old church. Their choir sounded like angels. French wine sipped in sidewalk cafés zapped my ambition. I floated through those first ten months like I was starring in a rom-com. England’s quirkiness was endearing. Every day, the postman made his rounds on his official red bicycle. It was heart-stoppingly iconic. He’d stop at our house and drop the post through the door onto the doormat below. I’d sigh with the delightfulness of it all, collect the post, and toss the envelopes into a pile to read later. The Brits are obsessed with these vaguely recycled-looking, grainy brown envelopes that look

harmless, like junk mail. By the time I gave them much thought, I had collected an impressive pile of these brown envelopes, addressed to me specifically. Eventually, my collection of brown envelopes kept spilling over and became impossible to contain. I finally sat down to open the pile of brown envelopes one rainy morning, a cup of tea in hand, fully expecting a pile of circulars from the vicar. Instead, it became very clear, very quickly, that the bailiffs were only moments away. Apparently those speed cameras I zipped past all the time weren’t dummies. They were real. Apparently, I had accumulated about a gazillion speeding tickets and I had not paid one. Apparently, a court date had come and gone and I had been was blissfully unaware. Apparently, Her Majesty’s Courts Service was quite displeased with me. And that, my friends, is when I snapped back into the real world. There is an art to reconciling fantasy and the often alarming reality of life. Sometimes, it seems as if fantasy should remain a fantasy: the gap between what is heavenly in your head and what is likely to happen in the real world are simply too far apart. I hate to dismantle dreams, but I wonder what it might look like this month if we tossed out our Hallmark channel fantasies and instead embraced reality. What if we moved slowly and savored what is? What if we stopped ‘shoulding’ on ourselves? Or comparing ourselves to others? Holy smokes, what if we had some fun?! Merry Christmas! May you do the best you can with the energy you’ve got. 1 organic orange 2 cups whole milk 3 cinnamon sticks, divided 3 ounces good quality semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped 2 teaspoons sugar (or to taste) 2 ounces Grand Marnier Whipped cream Ground cinnamon, for garnish

Place the orange peel strips, milk, and one cinnamon stick in a medium saucepan. Heat slowly over low heat, bringing the mixture to a simmer. 3. Remove pan from heat and discard the orange peel and cinnamon stick. Add the chopped chocolate and sugar, whisking until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Gently reheat. 4. Ladle into two mugs. If desired, add an ounce of Grand Marnier to each, stirring to combine. 5. Top with generous dollops of whipped cream, then sprinkle with ground cinnamon. Zest a bit of the unpeeled portion of the orange over each mug of hot chocolate and garnish with remaining cinnamon sticks.

ELICATE, FRAGRANT, and feminine, Black Baccara and Country Blue roses anchor December’s arrangement. Burgundy dahlias and plum ranunculus display festive color, while purple clematis, seeded eucalyptus, and plum Astrantia give contrast through their diminutive size. Magnolia leaves—harbingers of the holiday season—offer textural duality with ultra-shiny green tops and cinnamon-hued matte bottoms. OR YOUR HOLIDAY GATHERINGS and edible gift-giving this year, we’ve put together a delectable savory, and a delicious sweet: Oat Crackers with Ginger Cream and Chocolate-Dipped Walnut Brittle. The little Wheat Thin-sized oat crackers are our spin on a recipe we love from Ina Garten. Their rich flavor and crunchy texture goes perfectly with a spread of ginger cream. And our version of English toffee is a walnut-studded brittle rich with molasses, dipped in dark chocolate, and sprinkled with more toasted nuts. For the candy, you’ll need a candy thermometer to monitor the bubbling syrup until it reaches 300 degrees, the hard crack stage. Use any good quality melted dark chocolate for dipping. When cooled, store the finished brittle in an airtight container in the fridge, or bag it up to give to your friends! Oat Crackers with Ginger Cream Makes 8 dozen 1 ½ inch crackers FOR THE OAT CRACKERS: • 3 cups old-fashioned oats • ½ cup whole-wheat pastry flour • ½ cup all-purpose flour • ½ cup light brown sugar • 2 sticks (1 cup) ice-cold butter, cut into pieces • ¾ tsp baking soda mixed with ¼ cup lukewarm water

died ginger into tiny pieces. Stir into mascarpone. Allow to rest for ½ hour for flavors to develop. Serve with oat crackers.

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED WALNUT BRITTLE: • 5 cups walnuts, divided • ½ cup molasses • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 cup white sugar • 2 cups butter (four sticks) cut into chunks FOR THE GINGER CREAM: • ½ cup water • Four large pieces of crystallized candied ginger, minced • 2 bars of good quality dark chocolate fine to make 1/3 cup • 1 cup mascarpone cheese Preheat oven to 350. Spread walnuts on a baking sheet and toast 12 to 15 minutes until fragrant and golden brown. ReMAKE CRACKERS: move walnuts to a lightly dampened kitchen towel. Gather Preheat oven to 375 degrees. A

S THOUGHTS TURN to winter escapes, sometimes it’s hard to decide. Go East for cozy, snowy Cape Cod evenings by the fire? Or, perhaps, go west for sunshine, beaches, and a taste of Hollywood glam? Turns out, you don’t always have to choose. We recently discovered Shutters on the Beach (aka

Valentino Garavani The Rope sandals farfetch.com

“Hollywood Beach House”) in Santa Monica, a luxury hotel and spa with an exclusive “see and be-seenat” restaurant that serves up exquisite creations by the ocean. P.S. – Famous people go there, but they’re not naming names (so, shhh...)

It should come as no surprise then that Shutters on the Beach is part of the prestigious Edward Thomas Collection of Hotels, founded in 1982 by third-generation hotel and real estate investors Edward and Thomas Slatkin, whose family previously owned the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel. Shutters of the Beach opened in 1993 with much fanfare and interiors inspired by renowned designer Michael S. Smith, who also decorated the White House for the Obamas (not to mention doing design work for Rupert Murdoch and Cindy Crawford). The design is undeniably timeless with crisp white shutters immediately evoking Nantucket while the breezy, ocean-view balconies place you squarely in the California sun. But what makes the property unique is the

residential, “cottage” feel. MARANT farfetch.com Located directly on the world-renowned Santa Monica Beach— within walking distance to the historic Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, and Santa Monica Place (just 8 miles from Los Angeles International Airport and Beverly Hills) —the hotel’s 186 guest rooms each feature hardwood floors, four-poster beds, outdoor balconies, and whirlpool bathtubs. Or, if you really want to feel like a celebrity, there are 12 suites, including three Presidential Suites (suites also come with complimentary car service). As fabulous as all of that may be, what you will remember most about this treasure of a property are the views, the amenities, and the multimillion-dollar location. Whether you book a holiday sojourn or just stop by for a lunch or dinner, you will literally be on the beach, sand in your toes, and in a California state of mind. Want to try the outdoor heated pool? You will be welcomed with cabanas and private butler service. MOVEMENT Jill Borega brings her love of movement and fitness experience into her own new brand, MOVE x Jill Borega. words by Kelli Doremus photography by Monica Kass Rogers hair makeup by Leanna Ernest style direction Theresa DeMaria

W

HEN THE COVID-19 pandemic forced Jill Borega to stay home instead of teach fitness classes, it propelled her to chase her dream and do what she really wanted to do—start her own fitness company, training the way she loves to train. Borega’s entire life has been about movement. She grew up as a classically trained ballerina and studied with a nationally renowned ballet company when she was in her teens. “Moving my body just brought me so much joy,” she says. Then in her twenties, she stopped dancing as much and focused more on running and strength training—still moving, just in new ways. In her thirties, she was approached to teach BARRE classes with her ballet background, then transitioned to teaching strength and interval-based group fitness classes while also training instructors on how to teach group fitness. She also became a certified personal trainer. Borega settled comfortably into that life—teaching, training, and raising her three children together with her husband. She and her family currently live in Lake Forest. Then, like for most of us, the pandemic changed everything. “The pandemic hit and the world shut down and I looked at my husband and said, ‘I don’t know what to do with myself!’” Borega recalls. “So, I just went downstairs to my basement to work out and recorded myself and uploaded it to Instagram. Then I did it again the next day and the next day, and people started commenting that they were so appreciative that I was recording workouts for them while everyone was stuck inside.” From March until the end of May 2020, Borega recorded

a workout every day, Monday through Friday, and uploaded it to IGTV (@movexjillborega, where you can still find those videos for free today!). “People kept watching them and following me and most importantly doing them and moving with me,” she says. “Then they started reaching out for privates and group classes with friends.” In June 2020, she offically launched her own personal training business, MOVE x Jill Borega, offering private and semi-private in-person training and virtual group moves. Her training is specific to the female body based on the premise of how she likes to train—with moves that are the perfect mix of grace and intensity that leave you feeling sculpted, strong, and confident post workout. If you’re not familiar with MOVE x Jill Borega, it’s a flow-based strength workout that incorporates slow and controlled fundamental movements that fatigue the muscle and a mix of high and low impact cardio to elevate the heart rate, all while keeping a strong focus on form. “I wanted to encourage people to move their body using unique moves that are effective and efficient,” Borega adds. The support she received immediately from her community was extraordinary. She began booking more privates and getting encouragement from people to do more classes that could be available to anyone. So that’s exactly what she did, offering virtual zoom classes three days a week that anyone could join from anywhere. “It was a blast!” Borega says. “We were all stuck at home and we’d work out together, and it just snowballed into my own little workout company where you can work out anywhere, anytime.” In addition to the easy access to classes, she made it cost efficient for people, offering sessions starting at just $15. 11/14/21 9:27 PM

“I just want to encourage people to move their bodies to share my joy of movement and to show them how incredible they feel post movement.” In March 2020, she officially launched her website MOVExJillBorega.com, a landing site where you can interact with Borega, sign up for virtual group moves, and access MOVE membership—an on-demand library with workouts ranging from five to sixty minutes. Borega adds a new workout to the library almost every week. “It was a huge leap of faith,” Borega says. “But my community embraced me and lifted me up and encouraged me to keep going. That’s what keeps me—no pun intended—moving and waking up every day, writing new programs, training my private clients, and recording videos for my MOVE membership community. It’s just been so much fun and I’ve gotten so much wonderful feedback from people about how strong and happy they feel post workout and how much it’s changed their body.” This is exactly what Borega wants for every person she moves. Borega taught sold out classes for years in fitness studios, with people constantly on her waitlists. “People kept telling me, ‘You have something really special, the way you teach and inspire, you should really do your own thing,’” she recalls. “But it was a warm blanket I held onto—I was scared to let it go and launch myself into the unknown. Then when Covid hit, it really pushed me to do what I wanted to do. If Covid didn’t happen, I’d be on that same train and not chasing the dream I’ve had inside of me for years.” While most people are still choosing to do their classes virtually, Borega does offer in-person classes either at her client’s house or her house. “With the nice weather, they workout outside in their driveways.” she says. “My virtual clients love the convenience of getting out of bed and logging in and working out done and not having to leave their home, while my in person clients love the hands on experience and attention to details.” It’s evident how much Borega values her clients, going above and beyond for special requests—such as surprising one of them on her birthday. “Her husband texted me and asked if I could come do a workout with her,” Borega shares. “He wanted me to be sitting on her doorstep to give her a workout. She loved it. She was like, ‘This was the best birthday gift ever!’” Another client reached out to her and said she had two friends coming in from New York for the weekend. While Borega doesn’t usually train on Saturdays and Sundays, her client asked, “Can you please squeeze me in for Sunday? They have to the Jill experience!” “I just want to encourage people to move their bodies to share my joy of movement and to show them how incredible they feel post movement,” Borega adds. “And of course, I’m going to give those three ladies a good sweat session this Sunday!”

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE QWO words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

N

inety percent of women have cellulite. No amount of diet or exercise can prevent it. In the past, there have been multiple procedures and treatments used to improve the appearance of cellulite. We are about to introduce the first and only FDA-approved injectable for moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. QWO targets a primary structural cause of cellulite—the fibrous septae. These fibrous septae tether the skin, drawing it downward and leading to a mattress-like appearance, commonly referred to as “dimpling.” When injected into the treatment area, QWO is thought to release the fibrous septae enzymatically by specifically targeting Types 1 and 3 collagen, which may result in smoothing the skin and improving the appearance of cellulite. Initial results appear to be long-lasting. Side effects of QWO included injection site bruising, pain, areas of hardness, and itching in the treatment area. This is only temporary. Treatment consists of 2 to 3 treatments or injections into the dimpled area and spaced three weeks apart. QWO stands for collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes. This is a naturally occurring collagenase enzyme. When QWO is injected, the fibrous bans are broken and the dimple is released and is smoothed out. Once QWO is injected it only expands to the size of a quarter and is not absorbed into the blood system. Contraindications are any patient with a history of collagenase allergies or any patients on blood thinners or with bleeding abnormalities.
