THE TRACE TEAM ADVANTAGE

“”

Lisa and Sam were incredible to work with. They are extraordinarily responsive and helpful. They have a deep knowledge of the area, and the valuations of homes. Because of their deep roots, they know dependable local vendors who can address maintenance and repairs. They were sensitive to our anxieties, since going through a purchase and sale is nerve-wracking. They are honest and trustworthy. I felt confident in their answers to my many questions. I unconditionally endorse them. – R.S.

Editor’s Note W

Newest work by Ben Goluboff

hen I was in fifth grade, I earned honorable mention in my town’s annual art contest. My parents were proud that my coloredpencil drawing of a swan hung in the library next to adults’ oil paintings, but in my heart, I knew I could have done better. I had over-colored—too much blue led to more pink, which led to orange then chaos. By the end, my drawing was a shadow of the masterpiece it could have been, had I only known when to say “enough.” I’m reminded of that story as November ushers in the holiday season. The social whirl of it all invigorates and occasionally exhausts me. As an antidote to the overwhelm, this month’s Forest & Bluff and the fascinating people that populate its pages, inspire me to slow down and leave some space for the unplanned—the conversation with a neighbor, the stroll with my husband, the phone call with my Dad. Our cover story announces two exciting “firsts” for Lake Forest—the opening of The Atelier at 830 Green Bay Road, and the tenure of master painter Hector Hernandez as its artist in residence. I recently had the privilege of spending a few hours with Hernandez, where we discussed the time-intensive process called “Technique Mixte,” which involves layering paint in a specific way to let light filter through. Hernandez will teach this technique at The Atelier, and while there is no shortcut to the time involved, the results are breathtaking. Hernandez envisions The Atelier as a place where slow art and long conversations lead to beautiful work, deeper connection, and more transparency in every sense of the word. Our second feature introduces The Kristicks, a young family with a sweet story full of sliding doors. Good fortune and hard work led them to Lake Forest where they’re renovating a home and putting down roots for their little girls. In this month’s The Portrait, world-traveler Nicole Quick describes her time abroad in Europe and Asia, and her return to her hometown, Lake Bluff. In all her travels, Quick cites the Swedish value of Lagom as most transformative. Lagom means “just enough”

Wellyhaus Vase

and plays out in the Swedes’ prioritization of caring and connection with others above material possessions. On a related note, this issue details two opportunities to connect with friends and do some good for the community. The Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital hosts its annual Holiday Boutique November 16 to 19. This year’s event showcases many new vendors with fabulous merchandise to make holiday shopping a breeze. On December 3, generous Lake Bluff residents will open their homes and nudge us into the holiday spirit with their beautiful decor. Proceeds from the Holiday Home Tour benefit The Lake Bluff History Museum. Finally, in this month’s installment of The Last Word, writer Sherry Thomas profiles Lake Forest College professor Ben Goluboff. A published author with a book of poetry now on shelves, Goluboff makes the perfect subject for Thomas’ creative prose. As you read these pages—my first published as your new Editor In Chief!—I hope they encourage you to slow down and leave some space for the light to come through.

WELLYHAUS CUSTOM POTTERY Look no further for the perfect

Thanksgiving table centerpiece or holiday hostess gift. Wellyhaus custom vases transform even a small handful of blooms into a professional-looking work of art. Founded by North Shore resident Kate Higgins, Wellyhaus started in 2020 as a roadside flower stand. It “blossomed” into so much more when Kate partnered with Melissa Monroe Pottery to create the ideal vase for her roadside bouquets. Wheel thrown, each vase is slightly different and comes in a variety of sizes. Vases are available at wellyhaus.com.

Global Citizen Lake Bluff native Nicole Quick is back in her hometown after traveling the world. edited by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Maria Ponce styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Margareta Komlenac

W

hen Lake Bluff ’s Nicole Quick was offered the chance to live abroad, she jumped at the opportunity to experience new people and cultures with her family in tow. After stops in Sweden and Singapore, Quick and her husband returned to her hometown to raise their three boys—not far from her parents—where you will find her consulting on change management and process improvement or cheering her boys on at the swimming pool or baseball field. Passionate about experiencing the world and being inclusive, she strives to share both love and joy with all who touch her life. Quick shares some of her favorites from Lake Bluff and around the world. Favorite place you’ve lived abroad? Malmö, Sweden. It spoke to my Nordic heritage. How did living abroad change you? I learned and found an appreciation for the different values and traditions that are part of our host countries. Lagom, which means “just enough” is my favorite Swedish value. The Swedes live this value in that possessions don’t define them and moderation is a bedrock perspective. What does define them is their genuine caring about connecting with others. Favorite places you’ve traveled: Sri Lanka, Nikoi Island Indonesia, Tokyo and New Zealand. Most impactful experience abroad: Discovering the kindness of people in third world countries who have so little and have to struggle just to meet their basic needs. My favorite experience was in Vietnam. Top 3 favorite things in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff? Lake Bluff Beach, Union Church of Lake Bluff (“Come as you are”), and the tree lighting in Lake Forest’s Market Square. Mountains or beach for vacation? Mountains. Pheasant Ballotine with Sausage, Herb & Pistachio Stuffing words, photography, and recipe by Monica Kass Rogers

J

WC Media publisher John Conatser still remembers early teen travels to South Dakota where his older brother owned a spread of land perfect for hunting game birds. “In the Fall, I’d travel there with my father for the opening of pheasant hunting season,” he recalls. Now with five sons of his own, Conatser keeps up the tradition in the Midwest. “The boys all show interest in participating,” he says. “It is quite a thrill to bring home several pheasants after a hunt, dress them, and make a meal for your wife and kids to enjoy. In fact, we only eat wild game I’ve hunted for our Thanksgiving and other special holiday meals.” As a sport, pheasant hunting goes back to 16th century England. Royalty there became obsessed, capturing huge numbers of birds at one go before restrictions were put in place. (A team of seven led by King George V of England, for example, bagged

3,937 pheasant in one six-day period in 1913.) But while the royals were in it for the sport, here in the Midwest, preparing delicious recipes with the birds is the better half of the deal. This beautiful pheasant ballotine is a great example. Because pheasants are small, I’ve used three, two and ½ pound birds— enough to feed a family. And while most of us don’t have access to pheasant caught in the wild, farm-raised birds work just fine. The word ballotine is from the French balle or “package,” referencing versions of the dish where birds are completely deboned, the meat chopped and combined with herbs and other ingredients to be shaped, wrapped, and cooked like sausages. For this ballotine, however, while the breast, back, rib and wing bones are removed, the legs and thighs are left intact. The deboned portion of the meat is laid open to be filled with a sausage, herb, pistachio, onion, and brandied prune filling.

Everything is then tucked back in place to be stitched up, wrapped with bacon, and trussed for roasting.

FOR THE PHEASANTS AND STUFFING • 3, 2.5-pound pheasants • 2 tsp olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped to make 1 cup • 1/3 cup pitted prunes • 3 Tbsp brandy • Five links of fresh, mild Italian sausage, (1 lb.) removed from casings • 1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs • 2 Tbsp fresh sage leaves minced • 2 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves • Zest from 1 fresh lemon • 1/3 cup roasted shelled pistachio nuts, ground • 1 tsp. freshly cracked pepper •

FOR TRUSSING • 15 slices uncured smoked bacon • Kitchen twine • Cotton thread

To ensure a very moist result, I brine the pheasant with herbs, onion, and peppercorns overnight. I then debone the bird, fill it with the stuffing, and allow it to air dry a bit for a crisper skin when roasted. Because the legs and thighs take a little longer to roast than the stuffed ballotine, I slice and plate the ballotine portions after roasting, returning the leg and thigh halves of the birds to the oven for an extra 10 minutes. Tucking small red, gold and purple potatoes, and perhaps some carrot and parsnip around the pheasants makes this a one-dish meal. And for the gravy, simmering the wings and bones you trimmed away will provide you with rich broth to extend the pan juices.

SERVES 6 TO 8 INGREDIENTS FOR THE BRINE • 4 quarts water, divided • 1 cup kosher salt • 1 cup brown sugar • ½ cup maple syrup • 4 cloves garlic, smashed • 2 dried bay leaves • 1 large bunch parsley with stems • 6 sprigs fresh thyme • 3 sprigs fresh rosemary • 1 Tbsp Tellicherry peppercorns • 1 large onion, chopped • Zest and juice from one fresh lemon

FOR ROASTING • 1 pound small red, gold and purple potatoes • 2 parsnips, peeled and cut in chunks (optional) • 1 carrot, peeled and cut in chunks (optional) • 2 tsp softened butter • 2 tsp olive oil • 1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves Freshly ground pepper •

THE DISH

METHOD MAKE BRINE In a large stock pot over medium heat, bring 2 quarts of water to a boil. Add salt, sugar, and syrup and stir to dissolve. Cool to room temperature. Add herbs, peppercorns and onion. Add remaining 2 quarts of water. Pour all into a large lidded container. Rinse pheasants and place in brine. Cover container. Refrigerate overnight. MAKE STUFFING In a skillet over low heat, slowly cook onion in olive oil until onions are soft and translucent. Cool. Place pitted prunes in small microwaveable bowl with brandy and heat for 40 seconds to plump prunes. Cool. Dice prunes and add with brandy to a medium sized bowl. Add cooled onions, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, sage, thyme, lemon zest, ground pistachios, and pepper. Mix well. DEBONE PHEASANTS Remove pheasants from brine and pat dry. Working one bird at a time, on clean worksurface, flip pheasant onto its breast. Do not remove the neck skin. Using a boning knife, sharp kitchen shears and great care, remove wings. Slice through skin to the backbone cutting down along the length of the bird, to open cavity. Remove rib bones, breast bones and cartilage and leave meat and skin in place. Remove wishbone doing the same. Carefully slicing against the grain, partially cut a thin flap of the breast meat on both sides of the bird, leaving each partially attached. Flip each over on either side of the bird.

Generously pepper the pheasant. Place 1/3 of the stuffing down the center of the cavity. Lift both flaps of breast meat and skin back up and around the stuffing to reform the bird. Fold the neck skin up and over to cover center gap. Using a trussing needle and cotton thread, stich the skin together. Working one strip of bacon at a time, starting just below the legs, wrap the slices of bacon from under the bird all the way around to the top, leaving the ends of the bacon on top. Flip bird over (now breast-side up). There may be a large gap without skin over it near the neck. Stretch the surrounding skin to cover gap a bit and stich closed with cotton thread. Once you have tied the legs together, any remaining gap won’t show much. Using kitchen twine, truss the bird around its width from the underside up over the bacon at regular intervals, knotting the twine to hold the stuffing and bacon in place. Truss two more times lengthwise. Finally, tie the legs togeth-

er. Place trussed pheasant on a platter uncovered in refrigerator while you repeat with the two other birds. ROAST PHEASANTS Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place pheasants in roasting pan. Surround with small potatoes (and carrot and parsnip if using). Drizzle a scant bit of olive oil over all. Sprinkle with thyme leaves and several more grinds of black pepper. Roast pheasants for 1 hour until deeply golden and internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Remove from oven. Lightly cover with foil and allow to rest for 15 to minutes before slicing and plating the stuffed portions of the ballotine with the roasted vegetables. Return the leg and thigh halves of the birds to the oven for 10 more minutes to ensure doneness. I like to tuck fresh sprigs of thyme and sage around the bird for a pretty presentation.

Step Four of The Strategic Divorce Process MAINTENANCE

TM

words by Michone J. Riewer

I

believe knowledge of the divorce process provides strength and peace of mind to those facing an often complicated and difficult time. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™. My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved and two distinct steps when no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts. In this month’s column, we will examine a step that occurs in all divorces—maintenance. Sometimes called alimony or spousal support, maintenance is supplemental income paid from one spouse to the other after their divorce. Simply put, the purpose of this income is to allow both spouses to live the same lifestyle that they were accustomed to during their marriage. Of course, this simplistic view isn’t entirely realistic. When two people divorce, even though their combined income will likely stay the same, their expenses often nearly double as there are two separate households with separate rent or mortgages, utility bills, and other costs. When determining who will pay maintenance, the primary factor is income. The lower wage earner will always be the one to receive spousal support. Any and all reliable sources of money, not necessarily just employment, should be identified and used in the calculation. This can include regular family gifts, investments that have regular returns, perks from employment, or cash from side projects. A common misconception about maintenance is that it is at the court’s discretion. While this was the case until 2016, courts must now use a statutory formula. Currently, annual maintenance paid equals 33 percent of the higher wager earner’s net income minus 25 percent of the lower wage earner’s net income. There are some exceptions to this equation. First, the amount of money the lower wage earner receives cannot exceed more than 40 percent of the couple’s combined net income. If the amount does exceed it, 40 percent of the combined net income is used as a cap. Additionally, should the couple’s combined gross in-

Michone J. Riewer Photography by Katrina Wittkamp Styling by Theresa DeMaria

come be in excess of $500,000 annually, any maintenance awarded on income in excess of $500,000 can be calculated differently, at the judge’s discretion. For spouses who do not have their own income, such as a stay-at-home parent, an imputed income is often entered into the equation to represent their earning potential. This adjustment reduces the maintenance obligation for the higher earner. While temporary maintenance may begin during the divorce, standard maintenance payments begin monthly once the divorce is completed but, in most cases, they do not go on indefinitely. How long maintenance is paid is determined by a formula. In Illinois, maintenance lasts a percentage of the time the couple was married, with the percentage getting larger the longer the marriage lasted. For example, if the couple was married for less than 5 years, the maintenance period is 20 percent of the length of the marriage. If the couple was married between 10 and 11 years, the maintenance period is 44 percent of the length of the marriage, and for couples married 15 to 16 years, the maintenance period is 64 percent of the length of the marriage. If the couple was married for more than 20 years, the court will order maintenance for a period of time that is either equal to the length of the marriage or indefinitely. While the amount and length of maintenance is determined by a formula, a different structure can be negotiated. One spouse may agree to a higher amount of maintenance to be paid over less time, or one spouse may waive maintenance entirely for a larger share of the marital estate. Generally speaking, maintenance, like child support, is fairly straightforward. The standard maintenance equation will drive the discussion, helping to avoid any contention or acrimony. If the parties prefer to bargain or negotiate, the division of the marital estate will be at the center of the negotiations. Radical Resilience

Sports Psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo shares how mindset work can make you more resilient and take you out of the Red Zone. words by Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo

A

s the holidays approach, many of us face increased stress, family pressures, and a whirlwind of activities. For athletes in particular, this season can be a balancing act, as family obligations and a rigorous practice schedule both vie for your attention. That’s why resilience is one of the most valuable superpowers high-performance athletes can develop. I define resilience as the ability to adapt or bounce back better in the face of setbacks, challenges, and stress. It’s about recognizing difficulties and having the capacity to withstand and overcome them—instead of falling prey to them. On the other hand, resilience isn’t ignoring your negative emotions, fighting through the pain and worsening an injury, wearing a tough facade, or avoiding vulnerability. At its core, resilience involves developing your ability to manage and channel frustration, disappointment, and anger into something healthy and constructive. Whether you use setbacks to fuel your focus, teach you a valuable lesson, or simply as a memory you look back and laugh at, resilience helps you move from a place of “stuck” to a place of strength. When I’m talking to my clients about resilience, a brief biology lesson really drives the concept home: Resilience lives in your frontal lobe, the part of your brain in charge of high-level thoughts and functions. Your frontal lobe, when active, is responsible for great things. Seeing the big picture, planning for the future, feeling bold and confident, solving problems, and thinking creatively all happen when your frontal lobe is lit up. I call this being in the Green Zone—when your frontal lobe is activated and taking charge of the situation. When you’re firmly planted in the Green Zone, injuries, setbacks, and challenges still sting. They’re still frustrating because the Green Zone isn’t about denying your situation or ignoring your circumstances. But when your brain is operating in the resilient Green Zone, you have the mental fortitude to step back from your situation and see the big picture. On the flip side, when your resilience is weak, your frontal lobe shuts down and your limbic system takes over. Your limbic system is like your animal brain. It’s primitive, focused on fight-or-flight, and totally incapable of seeing the bright side. I call this mindset—when your limbic system is on full tilt—being in the Red Zone. Yikes. When you experience setbacks and holiday season stressors, do you find yourself in the Green Zone (aware of the challenge, but confident you’ll find a solution) or flailing in

the Red Zone (overwhelmed and on-edge)? If you’re on Team Red Zone more often than not, you aren’t alone. And you aren’t stuck there. Next time you find yourself needing a healthy dose of resilience, try my SWAT exercise. Stop, Walk, Air, and Tune. Stop yourself from saying anything you might regret later. Walk out the stress. Or run it out, if that’s more your speed. Air it out with a deep breathing exercise, a hearty laugh, or a good conversation with a trusted friend. And Tune into your favorite music—something upbeat that gets you into a positive mental state. There’s no resilience in the Red Zone. But when setbacks come your way—and I can assure you, they will—SWAT them down with this simple exercise. It may take a bit of practice, but the more you move your mindset towards the Green Zone, the greater resilience you can build. At EleVive, my team and I use a proprietary and proven process called Neuro-Regenerative Training (NRT) to empower athletes to build greater resilience—in the game, and in real life. Because practice isn’t the only key to great performance. A strong mindset, and resilience in the face of adversity, are crucial to unlocking your peak potential.

T

HE VIBRANT WHITE WALLS of the French Norman estate at 830 Green Bay Road are layered in apparent contradiction. Tapestries hang beside abstracts which hang near a steam punk painting. Rather than clashing, the juxtaposition of styles and viewpoints creates an unexpected masterpiece. Dissonance yields to harmony. That is precisely the vision, for both the décor and for Lake Forest’s new center for art, creativity, and deep thinking— The Atelier. “The art world needs creators,” says Hector Hernandez, master painter and resident artist at The Atelier, “but also custodians of the arts and the noble ideas that create them.” Like Barbizon and the Impressionist schools of the 1800s, The Atelier provides a place for artists from various disciplines to collaborate and exchange ideas on everything from art to philosophy to politics. A place where, like the artwork on the walls, dissonance yields to harmony. Every aspect of The Atelier is built on patience, from the meticulous restoration of the David Adler-designed estate where it is housed to the classical painting technique Hernandez teaches his apprentices. With a jaw-dropping CV that includes studying at Chicago’s American Academy of Art and the Atelier Neo Medici in the South of France, Hernandez is an authority on “Technique Mixte,” a Renaissance method that combines tempera emulsion and oil paint to achieve a profoundly intricate level of detail and a glowing aesthetic reminiscent of the old Dutch, French, and Italian masters. “Hardly any schools—academies, universities, or ateliers— teach this,” Hernandez says. “I think this is something that makes what we are trying to do special.” Technique Mixte requires each layer to fully dry before the next is applied. It is slow art. And like the slow-food and slow-flower movements, as well as the broader “slow” movements, the slowness of this process is the source of its depth. Luminescence is achieved in the waiting periods between brushstrokes. As is much else. Those waiting periods provide time for reflection and long-form conversation, which Hernandez views as critical not only for the preservation of art but also the preservation of society. Beyond creating art, The Atelier at 830 Green Bay Road aspires to create an antidote to today’s fast-paced, short-attention-span, polarized society. “Artworks require the spectator to contemplate—not

just see—in order to obtain their wisdom,” Hernandez says. “Sadly, our fast-paced world is not just making our deepest ideas, feelings, values, and arts disposable … but also ourselves. Contemplation requires us to slow down and really appreciate what is meaningful and preserve and promote its artistic manifestations.” In preserving old-world painting techniques, Hernandez will honor, if not implement, the Renaissance instruction model of mentorship, where a “Master” painter evolves from three levels of intensive studio edification: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master. “The Apprentice learned from the Master and Journeyman, while doing all the preparatory work for projects—everything from grinding colors and preparing canvases,” Hernandez explains. “The Journeyman had the education and knowledge of the Master, but they owed their education to their Master and thus stayed to assist in projects until their debt was paid. The Master ran a studio with workers and students and had the knowledge of how to do everything.” Atelier Neo Medici, where Hernandez learned Technique Mixte, followed this classical teaching model. There, Hernandez studied under Patrick Betaudier and Greg Pelizzari, master painters who also trained local artist and The Atelier founder Nancy Smith. That is the connection through which Hernandez came to the North Shore after spending 10 years as a prominent oil painter in Mexico. Hernandez, Smith and third founding partner, artist Steve Jones, envision their atelier as a haven for art lovers and art learners of all skill levels. They are more concerned with attitude than aptitude. “The most important thing is having the

proper disposition and work ethic to learn,” Hernandez says. The slow process of Technique Mixte affords Hernandez the time to work closely with each student, adjusting his lessons to meet their needs. “The Atelier allows for a more intimate, one-on-one approach that encourages artists to grow at their own pace,” he says. “Those who want to learn faster can, since a strict curriculum isn’t followed. This is a system that has been used for centuries and one that I personally think yields the best results.” Like the tapestries on its walls, The Atelier seeks to weave itself into the fabric of Lake Forest. Its grand front doors will be open to the community for drawing and painting demonstrations, lectures, and special events. Hernandez and Smith, an accomplished painter

herself, also intend to work with the private sector and local government to create art for Lake Forest’s public and private spaces. “Florence during the Renaissance was nothing but a small village; the only difference is that they had an enormous vision,” Hernandez says. “I think it would be interesting to recreate and implement what they did as much as possible. I want to help build up the talent, further beautifying Lake Forest with artworks.” That process may take time. But slow processes, after all, are the hallmark of The Atelier. LONG JOURNEY HOME A Lake Forest couple reflects on the winding path that led them to their adopted hometown, where they continue to thrive as business leaders while raising a young family.

L

IKE ANY GOOD STORY, the journey that brought Keaton and Molly Kristick to Lake Forest includes a few plot twists. The couple had just started dating mere months before they’d each be faced with some major life decisions. Both were set to move from Lincoln, Nebraska— potentially in opposite directions. Keaton, a former San Francisco 49ers linebacker who had moved to Nebraska to help coach the University of Nebraska Huskers football team, was ready to find his next career move. He planned to retreat back to his hometown in Arizona to relax and recalibrate. Meanwhile, Molly—who had been working in sales at the Lincoln Journal Star and ready to make her mark on advertising—was in the middle of negotiating a new job with PureCars Technologies, an ad tech company that would take her to Cincinnati. Instead of going their separate ways, the couple went on a vacation together in Colorado Springs to discuss the options that lay before them—and a fateful choice that would ultimately chart their path to the North Shore.

“It was at the Broadmoor’s famous Golden Bee where over drinks we decided to take a leap of faith and move to Cincinnati together,” says Molly, who is now the Director of Digital Strategy at that same company, working with 17 different automotive brands across the U.S. and Canada. “And when the company decided to move us from Cincinnati to Chicago, we didn’t even know the North Shore existed.” Over the last six years, Keaton has also climbed his way to the top of yet another industry. As the Senior Vice President of Sales at Nolan Transportation Group, an Atlanta-based logistics company, he is now considered one of the most innovative minds in the import/export industry. “We push each other to accomplish as much as possible,” says Molly, who explains that in addition to each being the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree, they share a lifelong drive to succeed. “We love to see how far we can get in everything.” Soon after marrying in 2019, the Kristicks welcomed their daughter, Mara. Kelly, the youngest, was born about a year later. Their first home after relocating here was near Chicago’s lakefront, followed by a home in Highland Park. But with the girls growing up, they needed more space. FO REST & BLUFF 55

Lake Forest had everything they were looking for and more. Keaton fell in love with North Shore ravines soon after moving to the area. So, when a vintage home situated on top of a ravine in Lake Forest’s Villa Turicum neighborhood became available, he says it was a “no brainer.” “The all-glass back of the house makes it seem like you’re living in nature” he adds. “We want to make really good memories and traditions for our kids too. We feel very lucky to have found it.” A year has passed since they moved to Lake Forest and began renovating what will likely be their forever home. “We really look forward to meeting families nearby

and making great friends here,” says Molly. The girls are now ages 2 and 3 and love joining their parents at Market Square, whether they’re at Starbucks, the new Hometown Coffee and Juice, or at Lake Forest Bookstore. “We are both still very driven in our careers but we’re also committed to making time for our two daughters,” she adds. “We love the strong community and safe feel of the neighborhood.” More than a decade has passed since Keaton’s football days and he rarely looks back. But this fall, for the first time in many years, he will be returning to his alma mater at Oregon State as a spectator. It was Molly’s suggestion, a loving act that is not lost on her husband. “For a lot of people who have a career playing football or go their entire life playing a sport, to transition out of that—with the schedules, regimens, the attention—is difficult,” he says. “Meeting Molly and having her support and having her see me as successful in a different light made all the difference. Seeing her do the things she does was really inspiring and gave me courage and confidence I needed to transition.” In this November season of thanks, the couple says they are grateful for the life they have found together and the journey that brought them here. “We’ve both been promoted to the top of our careers during COVID while raising two infants. I’m proud of us,” adds Molly. “Six years ago, we were in Ohio, and now we’ve stumbled upon this community that we’re so excited to be a part of. We really hope to put some solid roots down in Lake Forest.

HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS Lake Bluff History Museum presents its annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 3 words by Tricia Despres photography by Maria Ponce and Madeline Eckert styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Margareta Komlenac

Michael and Julie Eckert

ONGTIME LAKE BLUFF RESIDENT Julie Eckert has always loved Christmas. “I love the music,” Eckert says. “I love trees with lights. I love a festive table. I love a fire. I love the movies. I love the Christmas cards.” And while the list filled with her adoration for her favorite holiday could go on, Eckert admits that what she loves the most is decorating her Lake Bluff home for family and friends. And this year, that special pool of family and friends will get even bigger as Julie and her husband Michael Eckert open their home for the first time during the annual Lake Bluff History Museum Holiday Home Tour. “My husband made the decision that this was the year,” explains Eckert, whose extensive collection of caroler figurines, Gladys Boalt ornaments and Mark Roberts collectibles will be on display throughout her Megan Winters-designed home. “Michael jokes that he loses 2,000 square feet of the house whenever Christmas comes around.” Indeed, whenever Christmas does come around, Lake Bluff itself transforms into the most charming of villages, courtesy of beautifully decorated homes that all seem to have their own story to tell. “You always do wonder what’s inside and what memories these

homes hold,” explains Penny Marsh, chair of this year’s Lake Bluff History Museum Holiday Home Tour, scheduled for Sunday, December 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Some of the homes are really historic, and you think about what Christmases have taken place through the years in those homes.” Opening the doors to the history and stories and memories of a select number of Lake Bluff homes each year has long been one of the magical pieces throughout the 13-year history of this much-loved event, whose proceeds benefit the Lake Bluff History Museum. The tour also includes two Holiday Boutiques in historic homes, where guests will find art, jewelry, clothing, and décor sourced and created by local artisans. “(The Home Tour) is our biggest fundraiser,” remarks Marsh of the event that will embark straight from the Lake Bluff History Museum located at 127 E. Scranton Avenue. “We support many of the museum’s expenses with those funds, while bringing many people to Lake Bluff through the Holiday Home Tour and other museum-sponsored activities in the village, such as the Auto Show and Ghost Walk.” And while Marsh herself doesn’t seem comfortable dwelling too much about the legacy she and longtime friend Susan Hawthorne will someday leave behind as the co-creators of this event, she does admit that she couldn’t picture her life without it. “I love seeing people getting inspired to be creative with their holiday décor in their own homes because of

this event,” explains Marsh, who manages estate sales on the North Shore through her company, Beyond the Bluff Conducted Sales. “It’s a joy for me to be involved each year.” What might bring even more joy come December 3 is perhaps a little snow to make the holiday picture complete. “It’s magical when it snows in the village,” concludes Eckert. “A white Christmas is always the dream. It just really is kind of the frosting on the cake.”

The Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital has pulled out all of the stops to make their Holiday Boutique a onestop shop for all of your gifting this season. words by Ann Marie Scheidler / photography by Katrina Wittkamp / styling by Theresa DeMaria

“W

E LOVE TO SHOP, BROWSE, scroll, click, and thumb through magazines and catalogs,” says Stephanie Knight, co-chair with Lisa Chang and Dana Geldermann of the 44th Annual Holiday Boutique on November 16-18 at Lake Forest Recreation Center. “We wanted to bring what we see out there on social media and in magazine editorials here to Lake Forest to the Holiday Boutique. We have vendors from L.A. and New York, Connecticut and Florida whose lines have been featured all over the world. We’re excited to welcome so many new vendors to Lake Forest this year.” The Holiday Boutique is one of two fundraisers hosted annually by the Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. The Women’s Board dates back to 1946. It’s comprised of more than 100 talented and committed active, honorary, and sustaining members. They also volunteer in nearly all hospital departments and contribute more than 10,000 hours of service to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital annually. The Women’s Board has a long history of supporting the hospital through annual gifts towards scholarships, programmatic grants, and major leadership participation in the capital campaign. “Our boutique has such a special history on the North Shore,” Knight says. “For decades, local shoppers have been getting much of their holiday shopping done at our boutique, which is great for them and incredibly important for the hospital.” When asked which vendors are the board’s favorites, they have a hard time choosing. “This is a tough because we are excited for all of them,” says Knight. “Hayden Lasher [whose great uncle was Henri Bendel] is bringing her exquisite Belgian bags and clutches. Glamourpuss will have her fabulous fur hats. Danrie is bringing the most beautiful children’s clothing and Buru will be here with their fabulous ruffle skirts in every color. Oh! And Netherfield charms! We are really into charm necklaces and bracelets so I’m saving up for Netherfield for sure!” The Women’s Board is also thrilled to be offering lines from local retailers: Toffee Traditions, Forest Needle, B’s Nuts, Velvet by Bunny and Babe, and Arch Glow. In addition to curating some of the country’s most coveted vendors—with 60% of them

participating at the holiday boutique for the first time— this year’s planning committee has invested considerable time into changing up a guest’s shopping experience, as well as the marketing efforts behind the event. “We think every year the show should have a new look and a new energy, so it’s important to mix it up,” Knight says. “We’re proud of the collection we’ve put together this year and believe there is literally something for everyone.” Among the new things guest can expect, Lake Forest’s Elawa Farm will be providing lunch and snack service. “We’re so excited about having Elawa—complete with salads, sandwiches, scones, cookies, coffee, and more,” adds Knight. “We’ll have tables for shoppers who want to linger with friends and to-go boxes for those who are in a rush and need to cross things off their holiday lists and race to school pick-ups. We hope having Elawa at the event will encourage our shoppers to ask friends to join them for shopping and lunch.” The Women’s Board’s Instagram page—@holidayboutique23— has a new look, too. It’s a colorful hub for all things Holiday Boutique, featuring highlights of all of the vendors and takeovers from some of their board members and local influencers. “We’ve tried so hard to squeeze as many new lines and returning favorites into our space this year—we are actually even spilling out into the hallway,” Knight explains. “We are promising a unique shopping experience this year: new vendors, a sit-down cafe provided by our friends at Elawa, the edits on social media that will make list-making easy, the old familiar faces that we love to welcome back every year, and fun new personalities that will make you want to stay all day.” The Women’s Board of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Holiday Boutique Opening Night will take place Thursday, November 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Boutique shopping will be Friday, November 17 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is hosted at the Lake Forest Recreation Center, located at 400 Hastings Road in Lake Forest. oolsculpting has been FDA-approved since 2010. It is the gold standard for non-invasive fat reduction. At Skin Deep Medical Spa, we have treated thousands with this unique technology. We are now excited to introduce Coolsculpting Elite as the next generation in non-invasive cryolipolysis. Coolsculpting Elite is the new and improved version of Coolsculpting Legacy. It provides all the same benefits and many more. The same benefits include freezing fat using cryolipolysis, it is non-surgical and non-invasive, and it requires no downtime. The new benefits include: improved applicators that better fit the body’s natural curves, enhanced fat removal removes 20 to 25 percent of fat in a single treatment versus 18 to 20 percent of the old system, better skin contact with 18 percent more coverage with each treatment therefore fewer treatments are needed, and dual sculpting: each unit has the ability to use two applicators at a time, shortening appointment times. Areas that can be treated: 1. Inner, outer, front of thighs 2. Abdomen 3. Flanks or love handles 4. Bra fat, back fat 5. Under the buttock, “banana roll” 6. Upper arms 7. Submental area under the chin

Coolsculpting Elite is not intended as a weight loss treatment but is intended to contour or sculpt the body much like liposuction without the need for surgery. To see if you are a candidate, schedule a consult at Skin Deep Medical Spa. As part of the consult, our guarantee and introductory pricing will be explained. For additional information, visit skindeepmedicalspa.com or Dr. Bloch can be reached at his Highland Park office at 847-432-0840 or Glenview office at 847-901-0800.

The Last Word

Great Imaginations Musing with Lake Forest college English professor Dr. Benjamin Goluboff about his latest creative opus and other unverified delights of a mind divided between town and country. words by Sherry Thomas illustration by Tom Bachtell

W

e know he grew up in Philly. Always wanted to be writer; can’t remember exactly when or how it all started though. Could have been junior year in high school when “an inspired teacher assigned Robert Penn Warren’s All the Kings Men.” Maybe. We know he published a short story in1988 about a guy becoming initiated as a teacher and (though we can’t be sure) he suspects himself of writing some bad poetry during that time. Can’t think of much more than that though, and he’s sorry. But Dr. Benjamin Goluboff, today an English professor at Lake Forest College and author of many acclaimed creative and scholarly works, has nothing to apologize for. His words may be minimal but they are delivered with purpose, delicious detail, and sometimes—as was the case with his recent Citizens of Ordinary Time collaboration with fellow poet Mark Luebbers—a brilliant level of imagination that elevates the lives of historical figures into a work of “speculative biographical poetry.” As explained in the opening to the 2023 book, this form of poetry is “narrative verse in which imaginary events are written into the life of a historically verifiable person.” They are poems, as he and Luebbers write, “that make music from the data of our subjects’ lives even as they amend, extend, or redirect the narrative of those lives. In dialogue with the factual record, but unfaithful to it when it suits them, speculative biographical poems ply a devious course among the particulars of a life.” It’s the ultimate homage, this collection of imaginings into the lives of poets, artists, and musicians, including Bill Evans, a Goluboff favorite. “At war with his addictions, at war with the conventions of his music, the only white guy in the classic Miles Davis quintet, Evans is a great subject for Mark’s and my kind of writing,” says Goluboff, who in addition to scholarly articles on a variety of topics in American literature, has published a long string of poems, stories, and first-person essays over the last three decades. “We’re very happy with Citizens. It turned out beautifully and we both had a lot of fun, but writers are often more focused on the next project ... we both have some cool new projects in the works.” As for his personal life, we know he lives in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood; takes the train to Lake Forest. “I find the Metra commute between town and country to be very good for the mind,” he says. “My favorite thing about Lake Forest is the woods. I can often be found lurking in Shaw Prairie, Middle Fork Savannah, and the college ravines.” We also know he leads highly engaging book discussion groups on the North Shore and Chicago’s north side. Were we to follow Goluboff ’s lead, we might be tempted fill in the rest of those missing details—to “ply a devious course” that imagines him befriending ordinary citizens in, let’s say, Kelly green Impalas and other yet-tobe-written scenes along the way. For now, we’re just eager to finish that book about the lives of poets we do know. Maybe. It’s just speculation, after all. Citizens of Ordinary Time is available at Lake Forest Bookstore and other booksellers, including amazon.com.
