Editor’s Note

Ah, fall. There’s nothing quite like it. From the fresh crisp in the air to the colors in the trees, autumn is a time of new beginnings and some of the best social events of the year.

One of those festive fêtes is Lake Forest Open Lands Association’s (LFOLA) annual Bagpipes & Bonfire extravaganza, a family-friendly party held on the idyllic grounds of the Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve. Chairing this year’s event are Diana and David Moore, who are shown on our cover this month with their beautiful family. “People are drawn to Lake Forest because of its beauty,” David told our writer in the This Land is Our Land feature, “and Lake Forest Open Lands plays a tremendous role in nurturing and sustaining that beauty. The various preserves have figured so prominently in our family’s life.” We couldn’t agree more.

Our next feature, Catch The Spirit, highlights another September social staple—the annual Spirit of 67 Home & Garden Tour. The event benefits the Spirit of 67 Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1985 by a group of visionary parents and community members interested in funding unique programs at Lake Forest’s Cherokee, Everett, and Sheridan elementary schools and Deer Path Middle School. Since its inception, the Spirit has funded more than 750 grants totaling over $6 million—an amazing accomplishment for which we are all grateful.

Turning to The Good Life section, which is always filled with the latest doings about town, fashion trends, and gourmet recipes you can try at home, we direct your attention to The Portrait column. This month we spotlight Lake Forest native Miranda Luce Maxfield, who shares some of her favorite things about our city, her life, and her job at Hindman Auctions & Appraisals. Those who know the family might remember her wedding to Clay Maxfield and the fabulous party her parents threw for her at their David Adler home in Lake Forest.

Another section you won’t want to miss is The Sporting Life, a special fall fashion feature from Lake Forest’s beloved Smith’s Men’s Store. From cashmere turtlenecks to black velvet slippers, these are essential items for any gentlemen’s wardrobe.

Closing out the issue as always is The Last Word column, this month featuring legendary comedian Tom Dreesen. In addition to spending 14 years opening for Frank Sinatra, he built an impressive career that took him from Harvey to Hollywood. Dreesen brings his show, “The Man Who Made Sinatra Laugh,” to Gorton’s John & Nancy Hughes Theater on September 17. And in case you were wondering (as we were), having worked with the late, great John Candy, Dreesen’s favorite John Hughes movie is Uncle Buck

Looking ahead to next month and the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff’s October 28 Local Legend celebration, we will have a full feature of this year’s winner—longtime Lake Forest resident and Pro Football Hall of Fame writer Don Pierson. In the meantime, save the date for a special October 5 “tailgate” gathering with Pierson before the Bears-Commanders game. For details, visit lflbhistory.org

Until then, we hope you enjoy this September issue and all that the glorious fall season has to offer. See you in October.

Rooted In Tradition

Lake Forest native Miranda Luce Maxfield shares a few of her favorite things about her hometown and reflects on her dream job at Hindman Auctions & Appraisals.

Growing up in a David Adler landmark in Lake Forest, it’s not surprising the Miranda Luce (now Maxfield) has a passion for antiques and fine interiors. In addition to meeting people and visiting beautiful homes all over Chicago and the North Shore, one of the things she loves about her role as a Senior Manager at Hindman Auctions & Appraisals is the way her job inspires her own decorating style. “Pairing historic homes with a mix of modern and traditional décor really attracts me,” says Miranda, who married Clay Maxfield at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest in 2019 (with the reception held on the grounds of her parents’ historic property, of course). “Bring on the lacquered ceilings, Scalamandre wallpaper, and Eames chairs paired with grandma’s antiques!” In addition to working with attorneys, bankers, and advisors to value large estates, Miranda is also an auctioneer for live sales, charity auctions, and galas. “I live and breathe the Hindman brand and feel so lucky to have a career where my business and personal life are so intertwined,” she adds. “The services that Hindman provides are ones that everyone needs at one point in life, so I am always networking.” The job frequently brings her back to her hometown, where her parents and many of her friends still live. “Lake Forest was a wonderful place to grow up, so much so that my husband and I plan to move back when we have children!” adds Miranda, explaining that they currently live in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood with their dog, Parker. “Tradition is important to me and the values that were instilled in me by my parents, my teachers, and so many important adults in my life—from family friends to youth pastors at my church to camp counselors at Winter Club—guide me today in my work, volunteerism, and friendships.”

Beach, mountains, or city for vacation? Beach. My favorite way to unplug and reset during vacation is to relax in the sun with a good book—preferably historical fiction!

Favorite place in the world, so far?

We honeymooned in Bora Bora. Lake Como is a close second! I call it “my heaven on earth.”

What is your favorite thing about Lake Forest? The history. It is a gorgeous town with stunning architecture and a unique visual character which I hope we can preserve well past my lifetime. What motivates you, both professionally and personally? Making my family proud. Beach, mountain, or city for vacation? Beach. My favorite way to unplug and reset during vacation is to relax in the sun with a good book—preferably historical fiction! Favorite piece of furniture or art in your personal collection? My favorite piece in my collection is an old Chinoiserie cabinet that I purchased from a Hindman Collections sale early in my career. My living room is inspired by Tory Burch’s New York City apartment ... this was a perfect, versatile addition. Favorite place in the world, so far? We honeymooned in Bora Bora. Lake Como is a close second! I call it “my heaven on earth.” Top 3 favorite restaurants? It is so hard to choose! Clay and I are big foodies and love trying new restaurants. The ones that stand out to me are Dal Bolognese in Rome, Temporis in West Town, and Ricardo Trattoria in Lincoln Park. Favorite color? Navy ... always has been! Favorite music to listen to while driving? Hamilton! I know every word to every song. In the middle of COVID, my husband and I drove my mother-inlaw back to Chicago from Marco Island. I serenaded them during the entire 17-hour drive. What time of day are you most productive? I would say midday. I certainly wouldn’t call myself a morning person and as I get older, I am finding that I like to go to bed at a reasonable hour. Best advice you’ve given or received? It doesn’t matter what you major in. Study what you enjoy! You will learn everything else on the job. Pets? Parker! Three-year-old Shih Tzu mix whom I adore. Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to collaborate with? Elizabeth Taylor is one of my favorites. Her iconic jewelry collection was sold by Christie’s in 2011. I would have loved to be involved in that auction. Next item to check off your bucket list? I plan to visit Morocco for my 30th birthday next year. My paternal grandmother is French Moroccan, from a port town near Tangier, so I look forward to experiencing the country of my roots.

Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce’s popular “Then & Now” auto show is back on October 1 for a display of vintage cars like no other.

Acentury of automotive excellence will be celebrated once again at the Lake Forest ‘Then & Now’ auto show, held Sunday, October 1, at the West Lake Forest Train Station.

More than 3,000 people came out for last October’s offering, which was even more special because it was the first since the pandemic.

The 2023 show is the fourth installation for the event, which is hosted by the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with local auto enthusiasts and a list of community sponsors that includes American Place Casino, Britt Carter & Company, Northern Trust, Glenview Luxury Imports, Northshore Sportscars, and The Porsche Exchange.

This free showcase of more than 100 cars is a “who’s who” of automobiles through the ages, from legendary collectors’ classics to modern luxury speedsters. An advisory committee of owners representing a wide range of cars from exotic and classic to preand postwar, vintage European, and Rolls Royce/Bentley will roll through for a display of “drivable art” like you’ve never seen in one place before.

Young attendees will also enjoy exploring state-of-the-art fire and police vehicles as well as peeking into a sprawling array of “hot wheels.”

The family-friendly event features entertainment by the popular Flat Cats band, an onsite raffle, and an expanded “Food Station” that offers food and beverages from favorite area businesses. This year’s lineup includes Clucker’s Charcoal Chicken, La Plancha Loca Taqueria, Lake Bluff Brewing Company, Bonique USA Waffles, Lincoln Land Kettle Corn, and more.

Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce’s “Then & Now” auto show will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 1, at the West Lake Forest Train Station, 911 Telegraph Road, in Lake Forest. Admission is free. For more information, visit lflbchamber.com.

Talking Time

by James Gustin

Sean Johnson is Hindman’s Director of Watches. Here, he shares more about his passion for watches and advice for budding and seasoned watch collectors Forest & Bluff (F&B): Can you tell us what sparked your interest in watches?

Sean Johnson (SJ): I grew up in Geneva, Switzerland, the historical epicenter of horology and where time is an intrinsic part of the Swiss DNA. Being on time is a fundamental element in Swiss culture, so watches and clocks naturally play an important role in our everyday life.

Growing up next to some of the most important watch manufacturers like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Richemont brands, certainly inspired my passion for watches. Living outside of Switzerland has also given me a deeper appreciation for Swiss timekeeping engineering and its impact around the world.

F&B: We hear you are quite the traveler and have lived in several countries.

SJ: Throughout my career and life, I’ve been fortunate to reside in many different countries—I have lived in 20 countries and traveled to more than 100—but I’ve always brought a Swiss mindset with me. In some ways, I feel that I have become a personal ambassador to Switzerland.

F&B: How did you begin your career?

SJ: Following my undergraduate degree, I attended GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the premier institution for those interested in jewelry. My first job was at a diamond trading company in Barcelona. I eventually ended up on 47th Street in New York City in my early 20s, which was a true turning point in my career. I honed my skills in how to authenticate, buy and sell, price, and negotiate, and eventually ended up moving into the auction world.

F&B: What have been some of the most memorable watches in your personal collection?

SJ: The IWC Portuguese was the first major watch I ever purchased. I guess you could say it was my first “grown-up” watch. I bought it because I truly loved it, and I always encourage collectors to genuinely love what they buy. The watch I’m wearing currently (as seen in the image) is a Rolex GMT-Master II, nicknamed the “Batman.” I bought this one in 2017, back when it was still possible to buy these watches right off the shelf.

I also have a soft spot for small European and Asian brands and typically hunt for watches during late- night online bidding. I love discovering new makers—there is definitely room for disruption and new watch concepts! It’s sometimes hard for me to separate my work from my passion for the industry.

F&B: What are some watch brands to watch out for?

SJ: The most sought-after watches are usually from Rolex, Patek

Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille (the ‘big four’). Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, and Jaeger-LeCoultre also do well at auction depending on the model, year of manufacture, and of course, the condition of the watch. For women looking for watches, a classic Rolex Datejust or a Patek Philippe Calatrava are always a good choice. Watches by independent manufacturers, such as F.P.Journe, De Bethune, and MB&F, have been performing exceptionally well at auctions in recent years.

F&B: Tips for collectors?

SJ: Buy what you love, and love what you buy. Don’t fall into the misperception that every watch is an “investment.” Collecting watches is a journey. It’s about finding watches that bring you joy and appreciating the artistry and storytelling behind the piece. I encourage new collectors to learn about the history of watchmaking and the crucial role timekeeping has played in society. There is a true savoir- faire to watchmaking, being passed down from generation to generation, which I think is underappreciated.

F&B: What have you been focused on at Hindman since you joined the firm last year?

SJ: There has been so much growth in the last decade in the world of pre-owned watches, and Hindman is poised to become a leading house for collectors to buy and sell some of the rarest and most desirable watches. My focus has been curating sales that feature exceptional collections and models from around the world while building a robust network of collectors throughout the country and beyond.

Grilled Herbed Veal Chops with Mushrooms

photography, and recipe

As transitions go, September is a favorite. On the cusp of new beginnings and fresh starts, the month feels full of excitement and promise. These gorgeous veal rib chops are what we’re grilling for our celebratory so-long-tosummer. Because veal has less muscle than beef from older cattle, it’s more tender and more mildly flavored than traditional beef steaks. It’s also lighter in color. Assuaging fears about sourcing this premium cut, I’ve learned that best butchers now offer humanely raised free-range and grass-fed veal.

For this recipe, choose 1-½ -inch thick rib chops (from the loin), and have your butcher French the bones. To ensure a flavorful, juicy result, I marinate the chops with fresh rosemary, oregano and thyme from the garden, plus garlic, lemon zest and olive oil. Grilling for about 8 minutes on each side gets the chops to medium-rare. (Use a digital thermometer to ensure you’ve reached a 150 degree internal temperature—the meat will still be light pink at the bone. Simply sauteed mushrooms are delicious with veal. And for those in my party who like some extra zest on the side, I serve a little chimichurri sauce, another good use for those herbs from the garden.

SERVES THREE

METHOD

MARINATE CHOPS: Combine garlic, lemon zest, rosemary, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper in a bowl. Stir in olive oil. Pat mixture all over chops and place in large plastic bag. Marinate for 6 to 12 hours in refrigerator.

MAKE CHIMICHURRI (IF USING): Wash and pat dry herbs, discarding stems. Chop and add with minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the bowl of a food processor or mortar. Pulse in processor to blend, or crush with pestle in mortar. Season blend to taste with salt and pepper. Scoop into a bowl and drizzle olive oil over.

GRILL CHOPS: About a half hour before grilling, remove chops from fridge to bring up to room temperature. Grill about 8 minutes on each side, or until internal temperature reaches 150 degrees. Rest chops, lightly covered with a sheet of foil, for 10 minutes while you quick sauté the mushrooms.

SAUTE MUSHROOMS: Heat olive oil in pan over medium heat. Add mushrooms, salt, pepper and pinch or sugar. Sauté until softened and juicy. Sprinkle with herbs. Stir.

PLATE: Plate grilled chops with generous portion of sauteed mushrooms and small bowl of chimichurri, if using.

STEP TWO OF THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™—VISITATION

Divorce is complicated. And when you’re first starting out, it’s incredibly overwhelming. The attorneys at Strategic Divorce strive to educate our clients on all relevant matters to ease the process. We believe knowledge provides strength and peace of mind. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™.

My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved, and two distinct steps where no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts.

Last month, we examined the first part of a custody agreement—decision-making. In this month’s column, we will examine the second part of a custody agreement—visitation.

It is essential that both parts of the custody agreement be outlined before any discussions regarding financials—child support, spousal support, or division of assets—occur.

Before any negotiations begin, we work with our clients to determine what parenting time they want, what they think will best meet their children’s needs, and what they think their spouse wants.

There was a perception that women were automatically granted more favorable visitation. In the past five years, we’ve seen a huge shift in the division of parenting time. Thanks to discussions surrounding a father’s rights and studies that show how kids benefit from having both parents involved in their lives, fathers are no longer forced into a minor parenting role.

Today, 50/50 visitation is much more common. For a judge to determine that one parent should be awarded more time, the attorney will need to advocate for a spe-

cial schedule and give good reasons as to why the schedule is in the children’s best interests. Such reasons would include if one parent has substance abuse issues or is not home enough during the week to reasonably care for their kids or has work hours that make transportation to and from school difficult. The attorney may also argue for a special schedule if there is a significant distance between residences.

There are several different ways to determine who has the children each night. The best way is for the parents to work together to create a schedule that optimizes the quality time both parents have with their children. Some people feel that a looser schedule is more appropriate for their family because they may have an amicable co-parenting relationship and believe a visitation agreement will be too constricting. However, it is important to note that the court will not accept any agreement that doesn’t clearly outline where the children will be sleeping every night of the year.

Determining visitation can be a thorny process. Some parents are unable to agree on a schedule because the number of overnights each parent has during the year affects the amount of child support that is required to be paid. Other parents are unable to agree on a schedule because their anger and animosity prevent them from being reasonable. In these cases, the court can appoint an attorney for the children and/or a psychological professional to evaluate the family’s situation and to help make the determination.

Luckily, most parents understand that having an amicable co-parenting relationship and fostering positive connections with both parents is in the family’s best interests. Yet, in some cases hurt feelings or a desire to reduce the child support obligation take precedence. One parent may even actively try to turn the children against the other parent. In these situations, it is important to have a counsel who de-escalates the situation and helps the parties move toward a resolution, rather than an attorney who intensifies the conflict.

The custody agreement is a long, frequently complicated, and often emotionally exhausting process. But it’s usually the hardest part of the divorce, and once it is complete, the next three steps of the Strategic Divorce Process™ move more quickly.

COLLEGE PREP

When recruiting coaches compare athletes and scout for talent, they’re looking at more than your technical skills and physical abilities. They’re searching for high performers with that undeniable spark

Some coaches call it passion. Others consider it natural talent. At EleVive Sports Psychology, we call it a ‘peak performance mindset.’

Peak performance is the culmination of incredible physical skills, laser focus, and mental toughness. It’s an enduring grit, coupled with a winning attitude. And in action, it’s an athlete who doesn’t just deliver their very best time and time again—but one who can also overcome defeat, setbacks, and injury like the true champion they are.

Want to strengthen your peak performance mindset—and catch the attention of recruiting coaches in your sport? Focus on these three mental skills that can help you maximize your technical ones.

Let’s start with stress management. Recruiting coaches are constantly on the lookout for athletes who excel under pressure. We’ve all seen athletes who dominate their sport—until the tide shifts. On paper, these athletes have the raw talent necessary to reach peak performance. But without the ability to stay out of the Red Zone, they struggle to perform at their best with consistency.

The Red Zone is what I call the psychological state we get into when our creative, problem-solving brain shuts down, and our primitive, fight-or-flight instincts take over. When we’re in the Red Zone, we can become overly focused on our mistakes, overwhelmed by stress or emotion, and constantly anxious. Not exactly a recipe for success, right?

But there’s a way to get out of the Red Zone. Reset your response to stress. Next time you face a stressful situation, try broadening your perspective. Ask yourself, “What’s going well right now?” Then take a moment to survey the entire situation, not just the worst-case scenarios. Stepping back a bit before you move forward helps you rewire your brain to recognize the big picture.

The second mental skill, resilience, is similar to stress management, but more closely tied to how you

recover from difficult situations. When you make a mistake, do you get trapped “in your head,” or do you bounce forward? When losses mount, do you get bitter or better? Resilience isn’t built by ignoring an injury or denying challenges. It means reframing every issue as an opportunity to inspire.

To cultivate greater resilience, think about the inspirational story you’re creating. Every great inspirational story has two parts: The adversity faced, and the incredible overcoming. Consider, how is this adversity getting in the way of your goals? What overcoming story do you want to tell? As you think about becoming your own inspirational tale, you’ll begin to realize you already have everything you need to become remarkably resilient.

The third mental skill recruiting coaches look for is an athlete’s ability to continue learning. And like the other mental skills, your ability to learn really comes down to your mindset. Athletes with a growth mindset crave learning. They embrace new training methods and are easily teachable—both of which recruiting coaches consider major benefits.

As you’re preparing for recruiting season, keep this insight in mind: Your skills on the court, field, track, or mat matter just as much as your mental skills. To achieve peak performance—and that undeniable spark—don’t underestimate the power of a winning mindset.

“After our first meeting with Heather, we were confident we would sell our house! She came prepared with suggestions and by the time she left, had created a full plan and timeline. Heather has the rare ability to be both detail and process oriented AND incredibly creative. She understands the nuances of neighborhoods and how to translate that into effective presentation and pricing of homes. Heather is a fantastic communicator and kept us apprised of the process and notified us of any action we needed to take. This year’s event is chaired by Diana and David Moore, founders of Woodland Foods.

is largely ceremonial, a great deal of planning has gone into creating what promises to be a fantastic event. The team at Lake Forest Open Lands pulls together an amazing day for the whole community to enjoy.”

The first land trust in Illinois to receive national accreditation with the Land Trust Alliance, LFOLA is an independently funded conservation and educational organization devoted to the acquisition and stewardship of natural landscapes, ensuring that all generations have a meaningful, lasting connection to nature. Since its inception in 1967, the organization has acquired, preserved, restored, and maintained over 900 acres and 16 miles of walking trails, an environmental portfolio of prairies, savannas, woodlands and wetlands—all free to the public.

“People are drawn to Lake Forest because of its beauty,” says David, “and Lake Forest Open Lands plays a tremendous role in nurturing and sustaining that beauty. The various preserves have figured so prominently in our family’s life. Many years ago, we were driving home from Sushi Kushi Toyo and realized we were catching glimpses of the Northern Lights. We quickly pulled into the West Skokie Nature Preserve and watched the show. And we frequently take our dogs to Derwen Mawr Nature Preserve, and the new Greene Nature Preserve is quickly becoming a favorite for walks.”

“We have been enthusiastic supporters of Lake Forest Open Lands for many years and are honored to chair this year’s Bagpipes & Bonfire,” says David. “Though our role

Bagpipes & Bonfire—LFOLA’s biggest fundraiser of the year—was first held in 1987. It was initiated by John Dick, president of the private investment firm Dicksbridge Inc., who grew up next to the Shaw Prairie, one of the finest remnant prairies in Illinois, maintained by LFOLA.As a child, he experienced the celebratory bonfires that neighboring Scottish families —the Shaws and the McCutcheons—set ablaze every autumn. The memory stuck with him as he envisioned a memorable way to celebrate the organization’s mission.

“We have enjoyed the annual Bagpipes & Bonfire since

our children were quite small,” shares Diana. “Wonderfully, the event is turning into a legacy for our family as the kids now host their friends for the afternoon.”

“As true conservationists,” adds Paula Gould-Clair, LFOLA’s Vice President and Director of Development, “the Moore family walks the walk and talks the talk as demonstrated with their backyard native landscaping, coupled with their conservation support locally and elsewhere.”

Bagpipes & Bonfire, which drew 1,700 people last year, is held at Middlefork Farm Nature Preserve, the largest and most complicated land preservation project overseen by LFOLA.

Formerly a working farm, the acreage had suffered over the years from drainage issues and a crippling invasion of buckthorn, which forms dense thickets cutting of light to other species of plants.

“As Lake Forest Open Lands eradicates the buckthorn,” notes Diana, “it becomes the fuel for the enormous bonfire, which is lit after one of the many bagpipers stands atop it and plays “Amazing Grace.” It’s really a mind-blowing spectacle.”

Over the past 35 years, Bagpipes & Bonfire has raised $5.5 million in support of the LFOLA mission and its engagement and outreach programming.

True to its roots, this year’s multi-generational event—with Northern Trust as its presenting sponsor—features Highland athletes and Scottish dancers, 100 bagpipers, crafts for kids, fly casting, an apple launcher, live music, food (including the ever popular Firecakes Donuts), and—weather permitting—kilted skydivers.

Clearly, this is not just another Chardonnay and canapés affair. And fans of LFOLA wouldn’t have it any other way.

Catch The Spirit

The Spirit of 67 is kicking off the fall social season with its annual Home & Garden Tour on Thursday, September 28—benefitting Lake Forest’s elementary and middle schools—through money raised for educational enriching grants.

64 FOREST & BLUFF

THE SPIRIT OF 67 HOME & GARDEN TOUR IS BACK on the calendar for Thursday, September 28, and we couldn’t be more excited,” says Katherine Hensley, the Spirit of 67’s Vice President of Communications.

Noel Dolan, Gisela Orestano, and Lexee Rascia are cochairing this year’s event.

The Spirit of 67 Foundation is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1985 by a group of visionary parents and community members interested in funding excellence in Lake Forest schools. The Spirit is a partner in education to Cherokee, Everett, and Sheridan Elementary Schools and Deer Path Middle School where funds are raised and resources are acquired in order to provide enriching, educational, and cultural experiences that might not otherwise be offered.

“I became involved with the Spirit last year when my friend and I were approached about writing a grant to create a garden club for Everett,” Hensley says. “In the process doing that, I really fell in love with the Spirit and all of the

magic behind it.”

When Orestano moved to Lake Forest with her family a few years ago, she immediately got involved giving her time in the district.

“I was very familiar with how the APT works because we had something very similar in Miami where we were living,” Orestano explains. “But the more I learned about the Spirit and what it was doing for our schools, the more I wanted to be a part of it.”

Since its founding, the Spirit has funded more than 750 unique grants—like the one for the garden club at Everett School—totaling over $6 million. This lasting legacy is due to the dedicated volunteers, the generosity of district families, and the commitment of local businesses, community members, and corporations to support the mission of the Spirit.

“This year, I’ve been working on the grants committee, and it has been so interesting to see all of the ideas that come in for our schools,” Dolan says. “We really want the community

to understand that anyone can write a grant to the Spirit. A student, a faculty member, a community member—anyone who has an idea that would enrich a student’s experience is welcome to submit it. It’s a beautiful thing to see a community come together the way it does for the Spirit.”

Throughout their education in the district, students benefit from the Spirit’s grants in language arts, fine arts, wellness, STEAM, social and emotional learning, science, social studies, and world languages. Some recent grants include supplementing the new science labs with hands-on science engagements, visiting author and scientist programs, AR/VR technology, and library enhancements. The grants are awarded every April.

The Spirit of 67’s Home & Garden Tour committee has been working hard to add a new twist to this favorite annual event.

“Courtney Turner, the Spirit’s president, knew that I was somewhat of a foodie and asked if I could help bring some new food and beverage vendors into our event,” says Rascia. “We are hoping to create a food and drink experience at each home that will encourage guests to linger a little longer and take in the information that will be available on the grants we’re highlighting.”

While the chairs were tight-lipped about which homes will be on the tour this year, they promised that guests will not be disappointed.

“I’m most excited that we have older homes this year that have been completely reimagined for how families live today,” Dolan explains. “They are the perfect backdrop for our guests to see some of the Spirit’s grants in action with students from our schools.”

The Spirit of 67 is excited to introduce a new way of thanking the generous families who open their homes and outdoor spaces to make the Home & Garden Tour possible. Starting this year, the Spirit will honor those families by naming a 2024/2025 school year grant after them. “We look forward to celebrating the incredible generosity of not only opening their beautiful spaces to our community, but also the time and talent that our families share with us for the Spirit of 67 Home & Garden Tour,” says Turner. “We’ll share the names of

these families and the grants made in their honor next spring. Be sure to follow along @spiritof67foundation or check out our website spiritof67foundation.org for this news.”

“As part of the Spirit of 67, our goal is to enhance the educational experiences of every student, in every school, every day,” Hensley emphasizes. “Our Home & Garden Tour gets us one step closer to making this happen.”

Although money raised from this event goes to schools in District 67, everyone is welcome to attend the Spirit’s Home & Garden Tour. Tickets to the Spirit of 67 Home & Garden Tour are available at spiritof67foundation.org.

Bats and Bees

For more than 25 years, college interns have contributed to the important research work conducted by Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFOLA), helping to preserve natural habitats on the North Shore and also providing important data for preservation efforts nationwide.

Over the years, 165 interns have participated in the association’s Restoration Ecology Summer Internship Program, and this summer seven interns monitored bat and rusty patched bumble bee habitats on association-managed land to provide baseline data on bat and bee populations.

The bat monitoring was conducted in collaboration with the North American Bat Monitoring Program while the bumblebee monitoring is part of a larger program coordinated by the United States Geological Survey. Both projects are meant to introduce the interns to different wildlife monitoring techniques and processes.

One of this year’s interns, Ellie DeMilt, is a Conservation and Restoration Ecology Major at Loyola University in Chicago. She says the LFOLA internship program provides broader opportunities to study and learn that she can’t get in a traditional academic setting.

“I was looking for a restoration ecology internship, and this one really pulled me in. There honestly aren’t that many in the Chicagoland area, especially one that’s exactly like the restoration ecology I’m studying in school right now,” DeMilt says. “The best part about this internship is that you get a lot of the hands-on technical skills that you can’t get in the classroom.”

In addition to conserving natural habitats, DeMilt says, restoration ecology is about returning prairies and wetlands or ecosystems back to their original condition before the humans moved in.

A senior at Notre Dame majoring in environmental science, Sarah Solozynski agrees with DeMilt that the chance to do field work and monitor the bat and bee populations on land managed by LFOLA greatly enhances what she’s learning in a lecture-style setting.

“Getting to actually witness these creatures out in the wild and getting to track their behavior has made me realize that I like being out in the field in that way,” Solozynski says. “So, for my career, I want to have options where I can be outside and don’t have to be inside 24/7. It’s definitely opened my eyes and also affirmed what I already knew about myself.”

DeMilt grew up going to YMCA summer camps which is where her interest in nature developed. She says the experiences create a respect for nature and a passion for sustainability. Her major was undecided when she first enrolled at Loyola until she learned the school had an Environmental Science Program.

“I got really lucky. It’s definitely something I have been interested in since I was a child with curiosities about nature,” says DeMilt. “I was always very excited about outdoor education programs, but getting to actually dive a lot deeper and then do some real work is really awesome.”

Solozynski grew up going to national parks and also grew up

around dogs and birds, so being around animals and nature remain some of her best childhood memories. When she got older, she thought the only way she could apply that interest in school was to study biology.

“I started to take more classes and pay attention to the news, and I realized I wanted to apply myself in a different area,” she says. “So, I actually switched from a biology degree to environmental science.”

Molly Marz is in her second year as the internship coordinator at LFOLA and says the internship program is a critical component of the organization’s stewardship work. Having a crew that brings diverse majors and experiences to its research work helps the organization carry out its mission.

“One of the big reasons we have the internship program is to give students like Ellie and Sarah that first-time field work experience, which as they noted is hard to find,” says Susan Lenz, Senior Vice President of Community Conservation at LFOLA. “When you get out of school, it can be challenging to find a rewarding career path. This internship allows students to fully explore their interests in a field setting while also helping them create valuable connections in the conservation community.”

Both DeMilt and Skolozynski say their number one goal from the internship program as rising seniors is to get jobs after school, and they believe the internship opportunity will help them achieve that goal.

“We were able to work with herbicides and with machine tools and learn a lot about invasive species, a lot of things that I can use to market myself after college to get a job in this field,” Skolozynski says. “My other goal, which I think is one of the points of the internship, is to make connections. I’ve been able to make a lot of connections. There are multiple people that I can contact in the future for any questions about job opportunities in the field, which is really nice.”

Since its establishment in 1967, Lake Forest Open Lands has permanently preserved, restored, and maintained more than 900 acres of local native landscapes including prairies, savannas, woodlands, wetlands, and ravines for the benefit and enjoyment of the local communities. There are over 16 miles of walking trails that are open to the public year-round. Considered a leader among land trusts, Lake Forest Open Lands often serves as a resource to other emerging conservation groups in communities nationwide. In 2009, Lake Forest Open Lands became the first Illinois land trust to be accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, a mark of distinction in land conservation.

LFOLA is an independently funded conservation and educational organization devoted to the acquisition and stewardship of its natural landscapes, and to ensuring all generations have a meaningful, lasting connection to nature and to the land. They strive to engage and expand the community’s commitment to the preservation and conservation of the community’s historic and highly unique natural landscapes.

TETRA CO2 LASER TREATMENT

Tetra’s Cool Peel was honored with the Best CO2 Laser treatment in the 13th Annual New Beauty Awards. Out of 10,000 submissions Tetra CO2 laser was voted the No. 1 CO2 laser treatment. Our experience at Skin Deep Medical Spa corroborates this honor.

The Tetra CO2 Cool Peel laser treatment is cutting-edge technology that uses extremely short pulses of light to enhance the skin’s texture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, minimize pores, and tighten skin. It’s a non-invasive aesthetic technology that can dramatically improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and clear up the skin’s complexion.

One of the main benefits of Tetra Cool Peel treatment is that it can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration needed to tailor and optimize treatments.

The Cool Peel leverages the exclusive H-Pulse a high-peak power short pulse that delivers a fully ablative treatment without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissue. Without thermal damage, downtime is drastically minimized. Treatments can be tailored to select the precise power, density, and pulse duration to tailor and optimize treatments.

The procedure is quick and virtually painless depending on the area and depth of the treatment. One can often treat large areas of the body quickly and without numbing agents. Post-op there is minimal if any discomfort. The skin feels a little dry and begins peeling or flaking in days leaving you with smooth, radiant skin.

This treatment is presently available at both Highland Park and Glenview locations.

Doing It “His Way”

Legendary comedian Tom Dreesen brings his stand-up show about life, laughter, and years spent working with Frank Sinatra to Gorton’s John & Nancy Hughes Theater on Sunday, September 17.

words by Sherry Thomas illustration by Tom Bachtell

Imagine you’re a 10-yearold boy with some shoe polish and a rag going from tavern to tavern in your working class, Chicago area neighborhood of Harvey when all of a sudden, you hear a sound like you’ve never heard before. It’s the 1940s, after the war. Economy’s not exactly booming but people still need shoe shines. The factory near this particular tavern is having a shift change soon so you’re patiently waiting for your mother (a bartender) to get off from work when your uncle (who owns the tavern) starts telling jokes behind the bar. Really good ones. The kind that make people howl so hysterically it’s like they’re having an out of body experience—a joyful, divine, almost otherworldly roar you’ll never forget. “I was in awe,” recalls comedian Tom Dreesen of his childhood (yes, he was that 10-year-old boy). “From that moment forward, I loved hearing jokes and telling jokes.” To say he was obsessed is an understatement. Dreesen got up on stage as soon as he could and never let go of that mic—cultivating a decades-long career that now includes more than 500 appearances on national television, with 61 of those appearances on The Tonight Show with David Letterman (including a few where he hosted the show in Letterman’s absence.) In addition to appearing in multiple movies and sitcoms, Dreesen became a Las Vegas regular, performing with such stars as Sammy Davis Jr., Lisa Minnelli, Smokey Robinson, and Tony Orlando. But none of that compares to what still may be his favorite touring gig of all—opening for none other than Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. “The truth is that during the 14 years that I

worked for Frank Sinatra, I turned down more sitcoms than I can even count,” confesses Dreesen, who will bring his one-man show, “The Man Who Made Sinatra Laugh,” to the John & Nancy Hughes Theater at Gorton Center in Lake Forest on September 17. “I was flying on a private jet, staying in his home ... it was a great friendship. I knew it was the end of an era and I wanted to be a part of it.” In reflecting on his unlikely path “from Harvey to Hollywood,” he says that in those days, one appearance on The Tonight Show could change your life. “When I did my first appearance on that show, I was broke, and in the unemployment line.” About 24 hours later, the married father of three had a call to be on a sitcom. One of his many early claims to fame was appearing with Tim Reid as America’s first black and white comedy team, and once his career took off, it never stopped—to this day. The 83-year-old performer says he’ll tell some of those stories and others from his autobiography, Still Standing. My Journey from Streets and Saloons to the Stage and Sinatra when he appears in Lake Forest this month. He’s also on the lineup to throw out the first ball at Wrigley Field and sing the 7th inning stretch (ask him about the time he filled in for Harry Carry as announcer). Consider it a sort of homecoming for this Chicago area legend and a celebration of his favorite sound in the world—laughter.
