For the last 15 years, the Friday before Mother’s Day has been reserved for the much-anticipated HINSDALE COOKS! KITCHEN WALK. Like most events in 2020, last year’s beloved event was cancelled due to the pandemic, but this year it’s back, albeit in a slightly different format to accommodate social distancing. To continue in the spirit of this event, the Hinsdale Historical Society is hosting a virtual luncheon bringing beautiful design and community participation together leading up to May 7. Beginning April 5, the Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board will be working with homeowners, businesses, and designers to bring a month full of social media content in anticipation of the May 7 self-hosted luncheons,

where smaller groups of friends can come together, set beautiful tablescapes, get dressed up, and post their own beautiful kitchens and homes. The theme of this year’s luncheon is “Making Old, New Again” and participants are encouraged to mix old and new. There will also be content from featured renowned designers as well as raffle items and other incentives to follow along on social media. Despite the cold temperatures, Hinsdale BOMB MOMS Walker Rediehs and Caitlin Tatterson (Caitlin Tatterson Real Estate) hosted a food drive called “Share the Love” in February. The Bomb Moms network was started by Rediehs after COVID-19 hit to encourage moms as they navigate the new challenges presented by the pandemic. Hinsdale native returned to the community four years ago when her daughter Georgie was born. Moving into a historic hidden gem on South Washington Street with her husband, Rob, Hope’s home is filled with art and character inspired by her cultured upbringing. Her lifelong love of art and architecture began at a young age, as she traveled the world with her adventurous family. These experiences led directly to her focus in her formal higher education in the study of art and architectural history, both pre- and post-graduate. Over the past 10 years Hope has built a strong reputation as an art advisor for private clients, as well as working with design professionals both nationally and internationally. In recent years she has also taken on the role of curator for Triad Art Group—an artist representative and a fine art brokerage firm that works to wholesale art to galleries and museums around North America. Beyond running her successful business, her love of history and historic preservation culminated in her role as a past president of the Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board and she has been heavily involved with the beloved Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk. This year, Hope is co-chairing the group’s annual fundraiser, which is going virtual in 2021, with her sister, Sarah Zielke on May 7. Turn on all the lights; my little girl makes sure I see the sunrise every day. What’s on your bookshelf? Another guilty pleasure … I am a sucker for any good art and/or design coffee table book. You can’t live without? Time by myself. Love to escape to? Scotland, Paris, Amsterdam, and Aspen. Advice you would give to your younger self? It is all a lot harder than you think.

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? Dresses—black in winter; bright colors for summer. Can’t leave the house without? My phones—one for work and one personal. Transportation? BMW X5 Electric. I walk a lot, too. Place to eat? Nabuki and Fuller House. Shop? Yankee Peddler and Stockholm Objects. I also spend a good amount of time at FedEx shipping art. Best thing about country? The village Nabuki feeling—running into friends, knowing the shop and restaurant owners, and saying hello when you pass people walking. Worst thing about country? Knowing everyone. The perfect day is? Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk which brings the promise of spring, beautiful designs, and fun with friends.

Your style is? Artsy edgy—a lot of black. Can’t leave the house without? An extra phone charger. Transportation? When I lived downtown, I rode my bike with a basket everywhere, my sister asked if I thought I was Dutch. That, and Uber. Place to eat? RL, Le Colonial, The Hopleaf in Andersonville, and O’Shaughnessy’s in Ravenswood. Shop? Antique shops in Andersonville and Gene’s Market in Lincoln Square. Best thing about town? Art shows and architecture. Worst thing about town? Traffic. The perfect day is? Early morning breakfast and rugby at Fado and then a pub crawl with my husband, the Scotsman.

and fun. Planning ensued, and a disco nightclub venue at Dance Studio (formerly Studio Paris) was secured. Then January 2021 rolled around, and the reality of the lingering pandemic became obvious. So did the need to keep the event local. “When it became clear that a large gathering wasn’t going to be in the cards, we decided to shift our focus to our committee’s favorite element of an awards show—the red carpet! What better alternative than to give our guests their very own red-carpet experience?” says Casey, who is co-chairing HJWC’s “Platinum Unplugged: The Remix” event with Patterson and Yarger. With many small businesses struggling to keep their doors open during the pandemic, Casey says HJWC also felt a responsibility to bring the event back “home” to support as many local restaurants and boutiques as possible. “We immediately thought of Burdi Clothing for the main event. Burdi opened the doors to its Hinsdale location in September 2020 and it did the most exquisite job building out a stunning space worthy of its hand-crafted luxury garments,” Casey says. “With soaring rafters and luxe, modern finishes, we just knew this would be the perfect location.” The genius of this month’s fundraiser, however, is how it manages to feature some in-person interaction with an opportunity for participants to continue celebrating safely in small groups at home or at nearby businesses in downtown Hinsdale. Lynne Boche, who serves as chair of PR and marketing, explains that in lieu of the typical four-hour cocktail and open bar event, participants will pre-register for gift cards to their favorite local stores and restaurants which they will receive at the red carpet “pre-party” event—held in multiple one-hour time slots for 50 people at a time. Guests will then be encouraged to take their red carpet looks out on the town—celebrating in smaller groups of their own choosing at local bars, restaurants, or even from the comfort of their own home, all in accordance with state guidelines. “It was very important to us to have an in-person event and we had success this past fall with our ‘Reveal’ event that had a similar format of 50-person time slots,” says Casey, adding: “Our committee kept going back to the mission of our club to support those in need locally. Just as there are charitable organizations that rely on HJWC grants, our local businesses need us as well.” In lieu of the elaborate catering HJWC events are known for, the nonprofit will be purchasing PHOTOGRAPH BY IAN MCLEOD

Must-haves included musically infused energy, atmosphere, and a vibe that was both fabulous

gift cards for each guest as a way of putting additional dollars they would otherwise be spending on food back into the community. “Guests can expect a red-carpet experience coupled with music and libations before hitting the town for the after-party plans of their own choosing,” says Casey. Boche, who is working with underwriting chairs Ann Lockhart and Jaclyn McNamara, as well as auction chair Julie Bouchard, on the annual gala, says this year’s fundraiser is more important than ever. She and the team have been working to secure ticket sales and underwriting sponsors as well as silent auction and raffle items (including a luxury stock-the-bar package with exclusive wines and spirits), with all funds raised going directly to grants for local charities. While the club’s annual gala is always a spectacular evening, she says the impact of that one night is felt for years by local nonprofits. Over the last five years, HJWC has raised more than $1 million for deserving women and children’s organizations. “HJWC has received over $1.2 million in grant requests this year alone, so we feel a responsibility to raise as much money as possible to be able to help the many organizations that need our support,” says Casey, explaining that the part of the reason to working so hard to keep the event in-person was feedback from fellow nonprofits that patrons were getting “Zoom fatigue.” “At the beginning of the pandemic, virtual events were a safe solution to continuing on HJWC’s philanthropic and social activities, but our membership now feels more comfortable joining together in small groups in a safe, controlled environment which is exactly what we are going to give them—all while still offering an alternative for

those who would prefer to stay home.” Casey and Boche say the week leading up to the event will include week-long silent auction, spreading out a key part of the fundraiser for maximum impact. And now that most of the hard work is done and the event is just weeks away, Casey says the fun part of choosing a wardrobe for the red carpet has already commenced. “What we love about music and fashion is that both provide an incredible outlet for self-expression. After being home for the better part of a year, we expect that guests will come dressed to impress with glitz, glam, pops of color, and whatever else makes them feel fabulous!” she says. “Whether it’s a short cocktail dress, a long formal gown, or a bespoke Burdi ensemble, we just want our attendees to feel great while doing good for the local community and raising funds for HJWC’s grant program.” More than anything, Casey adds, the club looks forward to celebrating its successes, despite one of the most challenging years in history. Prepare to raise a toast to HJWC, our beloved community, and to the progress that’s been made in recent months on the road back to “normal.” “We are so proud of how nimble and creative our leadership has been through it all and we know that our benefit event will be a celebration of the impact that was made in our community,” says Casey. “Platinum Unplugged: The Remix” will be held on April 24. J

ulia Veome is feeling pretty in pink—pretty and powerful. On this sunny afternoon, she is modeling signature pink pieces from the comfy athleisure wear line she designed and just launched in a move that expands her Natural Baller skin care company into a complete lifestyle brand. The mission? “Live Life with No Filter,” says La Four Step Baller Routine set: Energize Cleanser, Balance Toner, Grange Park native Veome. “Natural Illuminate Facial Serum, and Hydrate Moisturizer Baller is all about empowering women with products that give them the courage to embrace their true selves, unapologetically unfiltered. No one—on social media, or in real life—should be able to make women feel like they are anything less than an absolute baller!” At 23, Veome has been about this mission for most of her young life. She launched Natural Baller at 21, the summer before her senior year in college. But her efforts to help her peers grow the self-confidence needed to battle entrenched cultural messages about beauty go back to childhood. Sporty, healthy, and happily centered in a supportive family, Veome was mortified when girls in her fifth-grade class taunted her, saying she “had a mustache.” This caused her self confidence to plummet and led her to a beauty parlor to have her little lip waxed. “Nika just couldn’t have been nicer,” says Veome. “I developed a really strong relationship with her, and we became family friends. Not only did she work with my family to restore my confidence, but she was also very knowledgeable about natural skin care products, and the harm that chemicals can cause. Nika taught me so much.” That early experience gave Veome a window into the world of natural skin care and a set of practical skills that led her step by step into the industry. But the mission for the company Veome would shape was also borne out of concerns for the environment, and, for her peers as she watched their behaviors on social media become more and more unhealthy. “We’d already seen so many unrealistic beauty standards, watching America’s Next Top Model and looking at Victoria’s Secret,” says Veome. “But by high school, when social media took over and everyone got on Snapchat and Instagram, there was an even more dramatic pivot in how we saw ourselves. I was lucky that I knew my family loved me for who I was. My younger brothers would even give me grief when I wore makeup because they thought I looked better without it,” she smiles. But the influence of social media could not be ignored. For example? It was normal within Veome’s friend group that somebody would take a selfie, send it to everyone in the group, and ask for them to edit the photo. The “best” edited version would be the one that was posted on social media. “Photos were literally altered to make waists smaller and hips bigger and lips poutier. Those were the pictures that got the most likes,” says Veome. “So, girls were regularly being rewarded when they posted images that they knew looked nothing like reality. Imagine what that

It got to the point where no one would ever post without editing anymore.” When Veome began studying at Saint Mary’s College, a series of events coalesced that would lead her to launch her company. Majoring in business, she took a marketing course where she learned that more than 70 percent of social media users struggle with body image. “That was on my mind when I got the news that Nika had been tragically killed in a freak automobile accident. I was just devastated,” says Veome. About a week after Nika’s death, Veome received an email from a skin care company that was looking for brand ambassadors. “Combined with Nika’s passing, it just seemed meant to be,” she explains. She took the job, writing articles for the company’s products. “I realized that natural skin care was a passion for me and something I really loved doing,” Veome says. With a vote of confidence from her father—a financial advisor in Chicago with whom Veome has a very strong bond—Veome set out to create a line of natural skin care products from scratch. “I did so much research. Everything from sourcing natural product formulations to package and label design,” expresses Veome. “A

rt is an evolution of practice and intuition,” explains artist Patricia Markos Dolan. “I’m constantly growing through my work.” Developing her technique organically over the years, for more than a decade Dolan has honed in on oil paint as her medium of choice—using her palette knife and brush to create and meld color into landscapes that blur the recognizable with something contemplative and almost otherworldly. “Working with oil is like working with clay—I can sculpt on canvas,” she says. Inspired by artists like Whistler, Turner, Rothko, Manet, and Monet—you can often find her in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago studying and painting the masters—Dolan also finds inspiration in addressing the cultural fusion of her background. As a first-generation American from Greece, she has been a part of two cultures her entire life—spending four months out of every year in a little villa along the Aegean coast. “Greek is my first language—all my paintings are titled in Greek. There is an intimacy to the language for me, a deeper meaning,” she shares. This is true for her current collection entitled Pelagos, meaning infinite sea, drawing on her impressionable years along the Aegean and inspiration from closer to home: the majestic Lake Michigan. “People don’t see one body of water when they look at the collection,” she shares. Instead, thanks to such diverse points of reference, each work is open to interpretation. Dolan’s relationship to water is not only one filled with personal history and narrative but equally primal and elemental. The resulting atmospheric work is a play between color and texture, a connection to nature and its everchanging energy. “I strive to convey a serene and sophisti-

cated aesthetic—to show Earth’s beauty without the gravity of the human presence,” she explains. Pelagos is characterized by a palpable sense of movement, fluidity, and dimension across the typically flat, static surface of canvas, and the subtlety of its color palette, nuanced shades evoking a continuum of emotions. In some paintings, a wash of moody grays stir melancholic memories, and in others, confident layers of blues and greens convey formidability and power. Many of the works feel almost dreamy, some reflective, and others lean towards turmoil. “Every piece is unique because it’s a feeling. I surrender to where the painting takes me,” she says. “Once the paint hits the canvas, I see how it all plays together. It’s like a puzzle to be solved.” Due to this intuitive process, no piece can be truly replicated. As Dolan paints, the feeling evolves, with water, sand, and sky coming together. “The image falls into place as I see the relationship to color,” she explains. “I look at its rhythm, to the past, the present, and future. It becomes a conversation.” This dialogue forges a connection, not only among artist and canvas or between colors, but among the works themselves: Dolan explains that her paintings are like family— interconnected and related together as one unit. “My first painting was hard to part with, but then I realized the joy of it being out in the world. That it was making a difference.” The artist, who spent much of her teenage years in Oak Brook (a community her parents still call home) will be featured in a solo show, Paradosi (Tradition) with her Palagos (Open Infinite Sea) series of oil paintings, on May 7 at Vivid Art Gallery in Winnetka. She is also available by commission. Dolan’s paintings can be found in well-respected private and corporate collections from New York and Palm Beach to Chicago and Washington D.C., and as far away as Greece and France. Of these new homes for her works, Dolan says, “I’m proud and humbled by my collectors, that they open their space to my work, that they connect with my vision.” Dolan is similarly grateful for the camaraderie she has found among fellow artists. As an alumna and member of the Art Institute of Chicago, and member of the North Shore Art League, Evanston Art Center, Chicago Alliance of Visual Arts, Norton Museum of Art – Palm Beach, Armory Art Center – Palm Beach, and the Athens School of Fine Arts, she shares, “I’m honored to be amongst a group of talented artists—the support and inspiration we have for each other is such a gift.” Though this connection to community and to client is significant, it’s a link to family, which includes husband Robert and their three children John, Frances, and Michael that is tantamount. “What I hope so much is to inspire my children to create without fear,” Dolan shares. “I wanted them to see in this pursuit that they are free to express in life, to put their vulnerability out there, to be brave, to be their authentic selves.” For more information, email pattymdolan@aol.com or visit patriciamdolan.com or follow her on Instagram: @patriciamarkosdolan.

s we get older, our energy levels decrease, our bones become frail, and our risk of falling increases. Having a smart exercise regime is an important health recommendation we instruct our senior patients to prevent some of these problems. It’s important for seniors to stay active and move more and sit less during any given day. Moderate intensity-activities include walking briskly (three miles per hour), water aerobics, biking, tennis, ballroom dancing, and general gardening. Vigorous-intensity exercise includes race walking, swimming laps, jump roping, heavy gardening, or uphill hiking. A good way to measure your intensity is by the target heart rate. We estimate between 64 to 76 percent of the maximum heart rate. For moderate-intensity physical activity, the age-related heart rate would be calculated as 220 – 50 (your age) = 170 (your max heart rate) beats per minute (bpm). Sixty-four to 76 percent of that level would be 109 to 129 bpm. For vigorous-intensity physical activity, the percentages are higher at 77 to 93 percent or 131 to 158 bpm in that same example. It is important to know how to take your heart rate. First, stop exercising briefly to take your pulse. You can take your pulse at your neck, wrist, or chest. We recommend the wrist. You can feel the radial pulse on the artery of the wrist in line with the thumb.

Place the tips of the index and middle fingers over the artery and press lightly. Do not use the thumb. Take a full 60-second count of the heartbeats, or take for 30 seconds and multiply by 2. The recommendation for older adults is around 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity activity like brisk walking. Along with this, two days a week of muscle strengthening and improving balance type exercises. Seniors may have limitations to exercise from medical problems like hip fractures, stroke, or osteoarthritis. Physical therapy can be an important resource to help design a specific exercise program that fits the limitations. SOX REDUX

Chicago White Sox co-partner Charles Walsh Jr.—an Oak Brook resident and former ‘triple’ threat from his youth baseball days in Elmhurst— has a spring in his step because the makeup of his 2021 ball club resembles the promise of the White Sox’s 2005 World Series title team. C

harles “Charlie” Walsh Jr.’s favorite youth baseball story is the one about the short, thin outfielder who always stood way, way back on defense because the boy from Elmhurst was afraid of getting smacked by a screaming baseball. That same player struck out often. Then, one day, every ball that had ever fallen in front of him in left field and every whiff at the plate became a distant memory after the struggling athlete ripped a pitch, scooted to first base, hustled to second base, arrived—standing—at third base, and flashed a smile wider than a warning track. That player? Charlie Walsh himself. “Athletically, I was horrible,” admits the Oak Brook resident and one of 67 Chicago White Sox/Chicago Bulls co-partners. “But I had my Hall of Fame moment, one I’ll never forget. My father (former White Sox/Bulls co-partner Charles Walsh Sr., who died in 2018) saw my triple; he also couldn’t believe it.” What Charles Jr. believes in today: that the White Sox will enjoy a home-run season in 2021. A playoff team last fall, Chicago’s South Siders—still blessed with a bevy of youthful talent—added three-time World Series champion manager (Tony La Russa, 76, in his second stint with the White Sox) and 2019 World Series champion outfielder and 32-year-old Adam Easton (also set to begin his second tour with the ball club), among other highly successful veterans, in the offseason. Chicago opens the season against the Los Angeles Angels April 1. “I’m excited and looking forward to seeing what the new high-profile players will do with a strong nucleus that developed quickly last year,” says Walsh, owner of the commercial real estate company Walsh Partners, based in Elmhurst. “My father would have been super excited to know Tony had been hired to manage the team again. He was my father’s favorite White Sox manager, and he considered Tony classy and a true professional.”It can all feel like community, and that’s how Howard likes it. “It’s about the dancers and the community, and just utilizing the art form to make the world a bit of a better place,” Howard says. Parents tell us that they want their kids to be better people. That’s what we seek out to do.”

YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF THE WHITE SOX’S WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON IN 2005? My wife (Violetta; she and Charlie have a teenage daughter, Gabrielle) grew up a basketball fan, north of Detroit. She then became a Chicago Bulls fan in the 1990s, as they won those six NBA championships. So it was heartwarming for me, a couple of days after the White Sox won the title in 2005, to hear her say, ‘Let’s do that again.’
