JOURNEYS
W
elcome to August! June and July flew by, and I can’t believe we’re heading into the final days of summer. With back-to-school coming up in a few short weeks, families are taking advantage of summer vacations that may have been missed in 2020 and preparing for the upcoming school year. If you haven’t planned that final summer vacation yet, we have the perfect location in our Journeys section this month— Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas. Once you head back to Hinsdale, your social calendar will probably begin to fill up (events are back!). We’ve spotlighted a few of the mustattend events in the area that you should certainly save the date for. Our feature, A Legacy of Giving, spotlights Cindy Mancillas and her father H Clark and their philanthropic efforts with Rush University Medical Center. Cindy, the 2021 President of the Rush Woman’s Board, is leading the charge for the group’s “Be a Game Changer!” event on October 1. Just two weeks later, Wellness House will host its much-loved ball, this year entitled “Under One Sky.” Our Giving Back story has all the details and where to purchase tickets. If you’re looking for an art escape, painter
36
Lisa Kinzelberg has a new exhibit showing through August 16 at the Virgil Catherine Gallery in Hinsdale. See more of Kinzelberg’s artwork in our second feature—Perfect Harmony—and read about her rediscovery of her passion for painting. We’re proud to present two new features this month— Dollars & Sense and Legal Leaders. Consider this issue your guide to the Western Suburbs’ premier legal professionals in a variety of areas of law, and the leaders in all-things money. This is an issue you’ll want to keep handy as you plan your future financial goals and personal and business endeavors. The pros featured are top-notch and we are thrilled to share their talents with you. We also have a spotlight on BMO Private Bank in Hinsdale—a staple in the community and Hinsdale’s neighborhood bank—in Finance. Family law attorney Brittany Heitz Goodlett of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck graces the page of our Esquire section. Heitz Goodlett shares her take on humanizing family law through positive relationships. And, of course, our inspiring cover model is Nicole Shubalis. After growing up in Oak Brook, Shubalis move to Chicago to pursue her passion for cooking. Unfortunately, she became the victim of gun violence in 2012, setting her on a new path during her recovery and moving closer to family in the Western Suburbs. She shares more of her story and some of her favorites to living a peaceful life with us in Country Vs. Town. Now, it’s time to dive in. Happy reading! Warmest Wishes, Kemmie Ryan kemmie@jwcmedia.com

THE HUMAN SIDE OF THE LAW Brittany Heitz Goodlett has quickly established herself as one of Chicago’s exceptionally talented family law attorneys, having recently been recognized as an Illinois 40 Under 40 Attorney to Watch by Law Bulletin Media and a Top 10 Emerging Lawyer by Leading Lawyers Network. Ten years into her legal career, her determination in humanizing family law and dedication to maintaining positive relationships with her clients have made her stand out as a rising star of family law.

B
rittany Heitz Goodlett has always felt a strong commitment to family law, despite the ups and downs that often accompany this field of law. This passion has driven her elevation to partner with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, one of the nation’s most prestigious firms specializing in complex high net worth divorce, within her first seven years of practice—one the fastest partner tracks in the history of the firm. “Having the opportunity to advocate for each of my clients and make their lives better brings purpose to my work,” says Goodlett. Goodlett’s primary goal in each case is to ensure her clients and their families will have successful, healthy, and happy lives following their divorce. Part of what makes Goodlett’s approach unique is that she truly understands each case is more than just another stack of files where it’s her team against opposing counsel. She recognizes there are real lives being affected and drastically altered. “This is a really human side of the law,” Goodlett stresses. In each of her cases, Goodlett strives to find that human connection with her clients. Her approach is to first understand each client’s goals and perspectives, then create individualized strategies tailored to each objective. One of Goodlett’s strengths is knowing when to advocate for her clients in litigation, and when to take a step back and think long-term. In other words, she knows when, and how, to pursue the right battles for her clients. Goodlett stresses that communication style is key to compatibility between family law attorneys and clients. She urges those seeking a family law attorney to look for “someone who has the
communication skills to listen to your needs.” Open communication with clients is essential to Goodlett’s practice. By maintaining positive relationships with her clients, Goodlett is better able to understand her clients’ needs and take the proper steps to achieve outcomes in their favor. “If you’re not listening to your clients and understanding their individual needs,” Goodlett says, “you’re not setting them up for success in the future.” Even in the most difficult and contentious of cases, Goodlett remains committed to achieving wins for her clients. Her goal is always to create and obtain solutions that allow her clients to successfully move forward with their lives. Goodlett remains steadfastly committed to doing everything in her power not to let cases become too destructive—especially when children are involved. “There’s a difference between advocacy and raising issues for the sake of creating problems,” Goodlett says. Goodlett’s commitment to her clients and her ability to relate to the very real and human side of family law make her a talented, yet compassionate litigator. With Goodlett’s winning track record and stellar reputation, clients know their needs will be listened to and understood—and that she’ll never stop fighting for positive outcomes on their behalf. insdale’s BMO Private Bank has been serving Hinsdale and the surrounding suburbs for generations now and is committed to providing their clientele with robust financial planning capabilities. Clients work with their skilled Private Wealth Advisors to discuss various strategies and solutions that are tailored to meet their specific financial needs. “Our goal is to demystify complex concepts so clients can decide what’s best for them,” says Kamiar Vossoughi, the Managing Director of the Hinsdale Market. BMO’s wealth management services are wide ranging and all-encompassing. Hinsdale’s office offers investment management services, financial planning, standard and custom credit solutions, and trust administration resources to clientele. Their investment management clients usually engage them in the financial planning process. Through the planning analysis, BMO Private Bank helps clients optimally structure their global investment portfolio, plan for retirement, acquire aspirational assets, identify broader gaps in their finances, and plan to efficiently transfer their liquid and illiquid wealth on to the next generation or charity. More than anything, the experts at Hinsdale’s BMO Private Bank office act as a resource to relay best practices to their clients. Vossoughi emphasizes that his team subscribes to the belief that they always need to respect the trust that their clients place in them. He adds, “Our clients have worked hard to obtain their wealth, so it is incumbent on us to make sure we are consistently bringing them our best ideas for their consideration.” Vossoughi describes Hinsdale’s BMO Private Bank’s advisors as “objective money-managers.” They take an open architecture approach to managing clients’ wealth, meaning they aren’t limited to proprietary investments and always strive to identify the best investments for their clients, irrespective of the issuing firm. The office maintains an incredible financial planning discipline and
clients have repeatedly seen the value that an integrated plan can bring in the efforts to maximize their wealth. While BMO Private Bank is part of a large global financial institution, the Hinsdale office has a true connection to the town and community. Many of its employees live in or near Hinsdale and have personal ties to the community—that fact helps personalize the client experience and creates a small-town bank atmosphere. “We have big bank resources but deliver boutique service,” says Vossoughi, who himself was born and raised in Hinsdale and lives there with his family now. “There’s a George Bailey-type of feel to it.” Hinsdale’s BMO Private Bank is proud to serve the hardworking individuals and families of Hinsdale who are looking to responsibly grow their wealth. This objective currently extends into prepping their clients for the proposed federal tax law changes. Driven by communication and thoughtful leadership, BMO is putting together presentations for group seminars and conducting one-on-one discussions with clients to advise them on how to best navigate the proposed legislation in order to maximize their benefits. In such a rapidly changing industry, Vossoughi cannot emphasize enough finding the right advisor for you and your finances. “I think an advisor’s communication style is key. People should look to work with an advisor who communicates consistently in a relatable manner and takes pride in educating their clients,” he says. Vossoughi and his team are committed to remaining accessible to their clients, and acting as both a resource and financial coach, so they can bring about the maximum benefits to you, your family, and your finances at BMO Wealth. BMO Private Banking’s Hinsdale office is located at 114 West First Street. For more information, contact Kamiar Vossoughi at kamiar.vossoughi@bmo.com or call 630-920-6880.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN NICOLE SHUBALIS grew up in the Ginger Creek subdivision in Oak Brook with her
close-knit Greek family—parents, Tom and Georgia, and sisters, Melissa and Marianna. After attending high school at Downers Grove North High School, Shubalis studied at DePaul University, eventually pursing her passion for cooking, and earning a degree in culinary arts from Le Cordon Bleu. Shubalis has shared her culinary talents at highly acclaimed James Beard Award winning and nominated restaurants Sunda, Frontier, and The Purple Pig. Unfortunately, in 2012 Shubalis’ life took a sharp turn when she became a victim of gun violence and was shot twice—once through each leg. After nearly a decade of living in the city, Shubalis rejoined her family in Oak Brook to recover both physically and emotionally. That setback ultimately pushed her into something that she always wanted to accomplish—starting her own business, Le Koko Cuisine—a personal chef and catering service. “Though the shooting was a horrific moment in my life, I am grateful for how it changed me into the person that I am today. I am a much better version of myself—a woman who values the people around her more and realizes the worth of every moment. It gave me perspective and taught me to appreciate life, my family, and all of the blessings that I have been given,” says Shubalis. When she isn’t in the kitchen, Shubalis enjoys spending time with her nieces and nephew, and two Maltese dogs, practicing hot yoga, gardening, painting, and volunteering with local nonprofit Operation North Pole (ONP). “Each year my sisters and I sponsor a child and their siblings, by fulfilling their personal wish lists. Providing these donations to help expand ONP’s mission for the care of children is incredibly gratifying,” she says. Mantra? “Be curious, not judgmental.” We could all use a little more love in our lives. Best grooming tip? Hydrate, hydrate, and then hydrate some more—and invest in SlipSilk pillowcases. Guilty pleasure? Breakfast for dinner. Favorite foods? Greek and Middle Eastern foods are typically my favorite cuisine. I also love homemade pasta, rustic pizzas with fresh garden basil and oregano, grilled veggies, and fresh lemon juice/zest on everything! Music you love? My playlists tend to be very random—Andrea Bocelli, ’70s’ hits, ’90s alternative, and Queen. Best advice ever given to you? Master your fears, not the absence of them. Best advice you’ve given? You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Everyone has their own path.
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
Your style is? Boyfriend jeans and a fitted, V-neck t-shirt or athleisure. Can’t leave the house without? My lululemon water bottle. Driving music? Old school hip-hop. Place to eat? Greek Islands. Shop? Nordstrom, always. Best thing about country? The presence of nature is absolutely No. 1 followed by the slower pace of life, in general, although with my business it never seems very slow. Worst thing about country? Honestly, nothing! Anything I can do in the city; I can do in the suburbs and with the short distance we are to Chicago we get the best of both worlds. The perfect day is? Spending time with my family at my parent’s house, while my nieces and nephew (and dogs) run around in their gorgeous backyard.
Embrace the path you are on and find happiness with what you’ve been given. Earliest memory? Taking boat rides and going fishing on Ginger Creek with my dad, using canned corn for bait because I didn’t want to hurt the worms (or touch them!), and singing songs with my very musical and beautiful mom. When you wake up, you? Drink a huge glass of water, followed by coffee, then a fresh fruit/veggie/protein smoothie. Feed the dogs and take them on a walk, followed by hot yoga at my go-to studio, Next Yoga in Elmhurst. Before bed, you? Wash my face, take my vitamins, brush my teeth, and say a prayer. What’s on your bookshelf? The Flavor Bible and about 1,000 cookbooks and various food publications. You can’t live without? My family and my dogs. Love to escape to? A Bali yoga retreat or Giraffe Manor in Kenya. Advice you would give to your younger self? You are enough.
WHEN IN TOWN
Your style is? A friend once dubbed me the “Designer Sweats Queen of Chicago.” He said I had a way of making sweats look stylish and cool. When I’m not in comfort-clothes mode, my city style is sporty-cool or boho-chic. Can’t leave the house without? Jo Malone lip balm, Nars tinted moisturizer, and my eyelash curler. Transportation? I always drive regardless of being in the city or the country. I like having the control behind the wheel. Driving music? 2000s playlists. Place to eat? The Purple Pig, Sunda, or Soho House. Shop? Oak Street and the stores in Lincoln Park on Armitage. Best thing about town? The energy. Worst thing about town? Traffic ... and crime. The perfect day is? Going out on a boat in the summertime and enjoying the beautiful lakefront with my dogs, followed by a little shopping and dinner/wine at The Purple Pig with my friends.

MICHONE J. RIEWER PARTNER STRATEGIC DIVORCE
Michone J. Riewer, a Partner at Lake Bluff-based Strategic Divorce, loves helping people and solving problems. “Being a divorce attorney allows me to do this every day. We help people through the hardest time of their lives,” says Riewer, who holds a Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law. She has been practicing for more than 25 years with experience in all areas of family and matrimonial law, including mediation, custody, visitation, parental decision making, maintenance (formerly known as alimony), child support, financial issues, corporate valuations, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, post-decree actions, and civil litigation. “It is very gratifying to be able to assist our clients with creating a plan to resolve their divorce issues and helping them move forward toward their future.” Riewer has extensive experience in corporate law and estate planning which allow her to integrate all aspects of the client’s life. “Many of our clients are sophisticated professionals and business owners. We break down the divorce process into bite-sized pieces that are more understandable and allow the clients to make decisions with confidence because they understand all their options,” says Riewer, who specializes in high net-worth individuals, business owners, and professionals that need help equitably dividing complicated assets. “Divorce is often adversarial; we help our clients recognize that working toward an amicable settlement costs less financially and emotionally and the outcome often has financial benefits as well. We have the legal and financial expertise to help them obtain the best possible solution without creating unnecessary drama, acrimony, or attorneys’ fees.” Strategic Divorce is located at 900 N. Shore Drive, Suite 220, in Lake Bluff. For more information, call 847-234-4445 or visit strategicdivorce.com.

MORGAN L. STOGSDILL HEAD OF FAMILY LAW GROUP BEERMANN LLP
As an owner and Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, Morgan L. Stogsdill’s practice is focused on complex family law matters and counseling high-profile clients that require the utmost attention and confidentiality. She has built a reputation on a strategy that seeks to calm tensions, which translates to better family dynamics and less stress in the process. “Family comes first and it’s up to me to provide impeccable service and strategy to get my clients what they need,” says Stogsdill, who offers concierge and confidential divorce services for the client at all times. Her focus is divorce and family law, including premarital agreements, but one thing that sets her apart is a level of compassion. “After trying jury trials for a few years, I wanted a more personal relationship with my clients where I could actually help the family,” she says. “I pride myself on listening with curiosity, speaking with honesty, and acting with integrity.” Seeing that the divorce practice in the past was tearing families apart, Stogsdill started a group (New Era Divorce) and now works tirelessly with her colleagues at other firms to make the divorce practice better. “Instead of tearing families apart, we work to redefine them,” adds Stogsdill, who has been featured in the New York Times and on various news outlets related to her work in family law. In addition to her long list of distinctions, she was named as one of “The Top 10 Women Attorneys in Illinois” by Emerging Lawyers in 2020. ANASTASIA POULOPOULOS ANASTASIA M. POULOPOULOS LTD.
Since 2003, Anastasia M. Poulopoulos has successfully represented thousands of property owners in their real estate tax appeals throughout the Chicago area—doing everything from meeting with local assessors to representing clients at hearings with the board of review. “My primary practice is real estate property tax reduction in Illinois. I have spent the last 18 years focusing on five counties: Cook, Lake, McHenry, DuPage, and Will,” explains Poulopoulos, who opened her eponymous, Chicago-based practice in 2006. “One thing that sets me apart is the level of service I provide. I answer my own telephone and I speak with each client personally. I make sure that each client understands the process, the timeline, and the cost of a property tax appeal before they choose to work with me.” Poulopoulos, has a B.A.S. from Northwestern University with a major in Mathematics and a JD from DePaul University College of Law, says she chose this profession because she loves utilizing her math background to help people. “I enjoy working with numbers and trying to find savings for my valued clients,” she says, adding that her success is credited to old fashioned values. “My law practice is built around one fundamental purpose—lowering your real estate taxes. I believe and follow the old adage of hard work and perseverance.” For more information, visit mytaxappeallawyer.com.

Brendan Hammer entered college interested in the performing arts. “I wanted to be a playwright or an actor,” says Hammer, today an attorney focusing on complex, high net-worth family law matters. “I eventually realized litigation was a way to use my communicative and emotive skills in concrete ways to make a tangible difference for clients and their families.” Interestingly enough, he says it is that background that sets him apart. “Litigation is a combination of sales, marketing, psychology, and theater. Mastery of the law is necessary but not sufficient to excellent trial advocacy,” adds Hammer, a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, who was named one of Crain’s “Most Influential Minority Lawyers” in 2017 and serves on the advisory council at the David Lynch Foundation (Chicago). “My approach to litigation is informed by a deep focus on the behavioral sciences, cognitive biases and heuristics, persuasion, storytelling, interpersonal psychology, and decision making amid uncertainty.” The first thing he tells clients is that litigation is not about getting moral vindication or emotional validation. “Adjust your expectations to the achievable. There are no prizes for ‘Best Spouse in a Supporting Role’,” he says. “Nassim Taleb once said, ‘There are two types of people, those who try to win an argument and those who try to win. They are never the same.’ In practicing law, I try to stay focused on the signal, not the noise. I try to win.” For more information, visit sdflaw.com/team/detail/ brendan-hammer/bio.

TANYA STANISH
SENIOR PARTNER SCHILLER DUCANTO & FLECK LLP Tanya Stanish has practiced in the area of family law for high net-worth families for more than 25 years. “I have had the privilege of representing many wonderful people in the Chicago area, including business owners, medical professionals, attorneys, professional athletes, a rapper, entrepreneurs, C-suite executives, and their spouses,” says Stanish, who graduated with honors and Order of the Coif from DePaul University College of Law and has an undergraduate degree in Economics. As a Senior Partner at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, she specializes in divorce, parenting and support conflicts, orders of protection, and negotiating pre- and post-nuptial agreements. “Some divorce attorneys specialize exclusively in one forum such as mediation or collaborative law or litigation,” Stanish explains. “I expertly practice in many forums, depending upon the right process for the client. I can effectively navigate a client through whichever method is beneficial for the client’s situation and needs.” The first thing she does with a new client is to sit down and listen. “They want me to know how their situation is affecting them and their children. The best way to learn how I can service the client is by listening to their story without judging,” she adds. “Once they tell me their concerns and fears, I can relate the law to the situation and let them know how the law will protect them.” For more information, visit sdflaw.com/team/detail/tanya-stanish/ bio.

LAUREN S. KAVANAUGH LK LAW LLC
During Lauren Kavanaugh’s last year of law school, her father’s death became a motivational force in her life and ultimately, her career. “I redirected my pain to academics because I knew that’s what would make my dad proud,” says Kavanaugh, who today runs a Hinsdale-based law practice specializing in Commercial Real Estate—encompassing commercial, industrial, retail, new construction, leasing, residential, contracts, corporate, banking, and finance. “Graduating a few months later, and passing the bar a few months after that, I applied that same hard work and dedication then and now, with the start of LK Law.” She explains that being raised around the law had great influence on her to pursue this profession and to gain law firm and corporate experience before venturing out on her own. “I have seen and been inspired by how the law can be used to help people by protecting them or having them achieve their goals,” she adds. “LK Law’s goal is to add value to a transaction, provide clients with innovative solutions to meet their goals, and achieve those goals. We are committed to providing high-quality legal work, along with responsiveness, full communication, the endeavor to be as efficient as possible, and undivided loyalty.” For more information, visit lklawoffices.com. MICHAEL L. LODERMEIER MICHAEL L. LODERMEIER P.C.
Michael L. Lodermeier says he pursued a career in law because he loves helping people. “In family and matrimonial law, people come to us at possibly the lowest part of their lives,” says Lodermeier, who has been successfully practicing family and divorce law for more than 20 years. “Clients many times feel lost and do not have anyone to turn to for support. I am honored to be that light in those dark times.” With an expertise in divorce, paternity, custody, child support, and asset discovery, Lodermeier has skillfully and efficiently conducted numerous trials, depositions, and hearings. His diverse client base ranges from high net-worth individuals to clients with more modest means. “I treat each client with the same dedication to success,” explains Lodermeier, who has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer since 2008. “I take the time to listen to my clients to better understand their fears, concerns and goals.” It’s the talent for listening that he says has driven him from the beginning, recalling advice he received as a law student while sitting next to a business consultant on an airplane. “She said to return every phone call within 24 hours, and you will never have a shortage of clients,” he adds. “It seemed like simple advice and simple advice to follow, but it sends the message to the client that I care, and I respect their time. I believe it has had a significant impact on the success of my practice.” For more information, visit mllfamilylaw.com.

Kroll has represented injured victims of negligence throughout the country in the areas of trucking accidents, products liability, and medical malpractice. With specialties in medical malpractice, patient advocacy, and transportation injury, Kroll’s tireless work ethic is the secret to his success both with clients and in the courtroom. “I also credit my ability not just to hear, but to listen and understand my client’s needs and determine the best means of moving forward to provide them with justice and compensation,” says Kroll, who was famously part of the 2017 trial team that obtained a record-breaking $148 million jury verdict on behalf of a dancer who was paralyzed when a shelter collapsed on her at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. “I love competition. The very thought of representing an individual or family against a major corporation is exhilarating. I cherish the thought of forever changing someone’s life.” Overall, his verdicts and settlements have exceeded $1 million on 80 separate occasions. He is also well-known in Chicago media for countless segments and publications and has taught Trial Advocacy and Medical Malpractice Law at DePaul University and Northwestern Law School. “I have taken many cases to verdict, more than most anyone in our profession,” adds Kroll, the only Illinois attorney to be published in the Anatomy of a Personal Injury Lawsuit, released by Trial Guides and the American Association for Justice. “I am not afraid to lose. When Adeena Weiss Ortiz was a young girl, six words were spoken to her that she has fought hard her entire legal career to prove wrong—“Adeena, you can’t change the world.” From an early age, she wanted to help people and make a difference. “When that person said that to me, I responded, ‘Not if everyone takes that position’,” explains Weiss Ortiz, who has been practicing in private practice, municipal entities, and pro bono agencies for 19 years. “By the gifts of my education, professional experience, and work ethic, today I am able to help individuals achieve their legal goals.” In 2013, she founded Weiss Ortiz PC with three locations serving Chicago, La Grange Park and Deerfield. Together with two other leading attorneys, she specializes in civil, family, and commercial litigation, and transactional matters such as real estate, business formation, and estate planning— offering competitive rates to both individuals and corporations. “I have been very fortunate to have acquired a myriad of diversified experience over my career in various fields of law. The cross-pollination has been quite advantageous,” says Weiss Ortiz, who is licensed in both Illinois and Florida, often representing Chicago-area clients with legal matters there. “I have also been fortunate to have outstanding mentors who took the time to provide me with exceptional training and experience. PATRICK W. WALSH TRIAL ATTORNEY
After 32 years as a trial lawyer, Patrick W. Walsh says his practice is similar to the work of the fictional character “Mr. Wolf ” in the movie Pulp Fiction. “I solve problems,” he says. “When people are seriously injured, killed, or arrested, I get called in.” With a reputation for finding solutions, Walsh says he’s the attorney clients call when they need help. “When Matthew Sopron was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life in prison, I fought for 20 years to get him exonerated and home,” explains Walsh, who is licensed to practice in Illinois, California, and Texas from his Hinsdale office. “When someone needs to get their routine or messy real estate deals done, I get the call. And if I cannot solve the problem, I will search for the right solution.” On a personal note, Walsh says he also coaches baseball in the area and just as he does in his law practice, he loves “pitching and winning.” Patrick W. For more than 35 years, Timothy M. Daw has litigated and negotiated complex family law cases to help clients achieve their objectives. He started his career with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck shortly after its formation and while still a law student. “I responded to a blind ad on a law school bulletin board for a clerkship for an unnamed firm. I learned in what became an extensive interview that this firm had developed a boutique practice representing high net-worth individuals in family law matters,” he explains. “A condition of accepting my position was that I had to stop working nights while going to law school. I knew nothing about divorce and 38 years later I am a senior partner.” He pursued this profession because he wanted to help people during the most difficult part of their lives. Today, Daw assists families and individuals, including business owners, executives; athletes; doctors; celebrities; and their spouses and significant others in resolving family law matters including divorce, premarital (prenuptial) agreements, parentage as well as many other ancillary issues. Daw has extensive litigation as well as mediation experience. DEAN S. DUSSIAS
PRINCIPAL DUSSIAS WITTENBERG, KOENIGSBERGER LLP Dean S. Dussias stands apart from other family lawyers. Noted for taking a careful, discreet approach to cases that might otherwise prove contentious, he says, “My singular focus for clients is to get them out of the divorce process and help them move forward. Prolonged litigation does not result in a more positive outcome.” Dussias and his firm have represented entrepreneurs, executives, and other prominent clients in high profile and financially complex divorce cases in Illinois for more than 30 years, and now stand poised to expand their practice to Florida and California. “We work with our clients to develop a pragmatic, business-minded plan that’s drama free. Sometimes I have to explain to clients, early on, why it’s so important to make every effort to keep the animosity at a minimum. Ultimately, I’m saving them money with that approach, but, even more important, it’s about protecting their children from the process,” Dussias explains. “People often aren’t able to think past the current moment, when things feel so intense, to how things might be in the future. I tell them that the minute the lawyers leave, they’re going to be left to figure out the rest—birthday parties, graduations, college, parents’ weekends, weddings and all of that.” For more information, visit dwkllp.com/team/dean-s-dussias.

JOHN BOTTI BOTTI LAW FIRM LLC
Hinsdale native and divorce attorney John Botti joined his father, Aldo Botti, a long established attorney and formerly elected Chairman of the DuPage County Board, at Oak Brook based Botti Law Firm PC in 2012. Having been appointed a DuPage County Assistant State’s Attorney after law school—prosecuting hundreds of felony crimes—John now uses his expertise to advocate on behalf of his divorce clients. John says he connects with his clients through empathy and a sincere desire to achieve the best possible outcome for them. The first thing he advises is that divorce is going to be difficult. “Our objective is to place you in a position to succeed in the next chapter of your life. And if children are involved, it is to protect the children and provide them with the needed financial support,” says Botti, who is also partner at Botti Law Firm PC with his brother Michael Botti, Jean Lasics-Wessels, and Aldo Botti. John provides a compassionate representation of his clients, and, when needed, aggressively advocates for them. “My goal is to help people get through a difficult time in their lives,” says John, who lives with his wife and three boys in the Western Suburbs. “When I think of how I got to where I am today, I think of Abraham Lincoln’s quote—‘Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend four sharpening my ax’.” For more information, call 630-573-8585 or visit botti-law.com.

hen Cindy Mancillas was a young newlywed moving back to Chicago after a career with Neiman Marcus’ corporate office in Dallas, she wanted to invest herself in a cause where she could have an impact. “I remember having a heart-to-heart talk with my dad about what I should do,” says Mancillas, who has her MBA from Kellogg. “Then he suggested I join the Associates Board at Rush.” Mancillas’s father, H Clark of Hinsdale, knew of what he spoke. He had become a Rush Board Trustee in 1986 and a Life Trustee Cindy Mancillas in 2010. “When I first joined the Rush University Medical Center Board, I was Chairman and CEO of Nalco Chemical Company,” Clark remembers. “One of our board members said to me, ‘H, you need to be on the Rush Board.’ I said, ‘OK, how do I learn more about it?’ ‘Don’t worry about it,’ he said, ‘I’ll take care of it.’ The next thing I know, I’m on the Board. It was a simple affair. And it ended up being one of the best things I’ve ever done.” It’s not uncommon to see multiple generations from one family share a passion for the mission of the Rush Board to work in partnership with the Medical Center to help it provide the best health care for the individuals and diverse communities Rush serves. “Rush has always been very involved in the community—the work it does stretches well beyond the hospital walls,” Clark says. “The more I learned about Rush, the more I understood how important its mission is. I always wanted my daughters [Cindy and Caryl] to be aware of the world outside their own lives and understand the importance of service.” Like her father, Mancillas knew she was on to something good. It wasn’t long before she graduated from the Associates Board to the Rush Woman’s Board, one of the oldest hospital woman’s boards in the country, dating back to 1884. After serving the hospital in some way for more than 30 years— having modeled in the Board’s Fall Fashion Show and chairing the show in 2012, today, she finds herself as the Woman’s Board president. “This has definitely been an interesting time to take on this role,” adds Mancillas, who succeeded Cindy Nicolaides in the fall of 2020. The Woman’s Board is made up of more than 200 dedicated
women who volunteer their time and talents. They are currently working towards a pledge for Precision Oncology Research by raising funds through its Spring Luncheon, annual Fashion Show, the two Medical Center gift shops, and board and individual donations. “We did the best we could to keep things moving forward when the pandemic shut everything down,” she says. “Cindy helped us pivot by taking our ways of doing things virtual. It required more logistical planning, but it worked. The nice thing was that it kept our board members connected when we couldn’t be together.” With Mancillas’ longevity on the board, she was able to see Rush’s “butterfly” hospital building—for which she helped raise funds in anticipation of it opening in 2012— treat the sickest of the sick during the pandemic. “It was amazing to see the Brennan Pavilion be transformed into a triage center for non-COVID patients in 2020 and then converted to a mass vaccination center earlier this year,” Mancillas says. “When asked why people stay on the Board so long, it’s to see things like—that the vision and foresight from a decade ago came to fruition today was nothing short of unbelievable.” Fast forward to summer 2021 and Mancillas and the Board are working tirelessly towards its fall event on October 1, “Be a Game Changer,” chaired by Sarah Alshouse and Bethany Crocker. “We have a Plan A with the event being in-person and Plan B if we’re not,” Mancillas says. “Either way, our virtual spring luncheon in May proved that we can be successful regardless of the format.” Even in a year that was challenged by a pandemic and months-long quarantine, the Woman’s Board was able to meet the 2020 principal project goal for the Transformation Fund and make additional grants to various departments of the Medical Center. As far as what Mancillas’ father has to say about his daughter being president of the Woman’s Board, it’s safe to assume he’s very proud. “I wasn’t surprised at all when Cindy became president,” he says. “She likes to be in charge of things, but she does it in an unobtrusive way. The work the Woman’s Board does is so important, and you need good people to do the job. She’s one of those good people.” To learn more about the Rush Woman’s Board or the “Be a Game Changer!” event on October 1, visit thewomansboard.org.

alk into artist Lisa Kinzelberg’s home studio and you’ll see several paintings in progress. Large scale abstracts, figurative works, and portraits encircle the room. One, a portrait of Kinzelberg reading to her children, leans against the western wall. Paint tubes and brushes, palettes with daubs of mixed colors, cans of walnut oil, and other bits of painterly flotsam spread out underneath. Inches away, an American Girl sports car is parked next to a Barbie dream house. A metal basket of footballs, containers of various sporting gear, and a high-tech gaming system looms beyond that. This unintentional still life combining children’s playthings and serious paintings, “exactly represents my life,” laughs Kinzelberg. When her children (Livvie, age 9 and Eli, age 11) are home,
Kinzelberg is with them, momming the home ship with all its attendant games and books, meals and cleaning, sports, and homework. But when the kids are at school or activities, she paints. A lot. Kinzelberg has exhibited her work in five shows in recent months and completed 40 paintings—nearly 20 of them commissioned for homes throughout the North Shore and in second homes in Arizona and Florida. More will be presented during a show running July 15 through August 16 at the Virgil Catherine Gallery in Hinsdale. Kinzelberg’s body of work for the show was created during quarantine and includes a series of large-scale abstract oil paintings that showcase her chosen “visual language.” In Windows, cascading squares and rectangles of color appear almost pixelated throughout the canvas. Three other pieces for the show feature scraped paint which blurs one color into the next, sometimes revealing colorful

layers, and at other times, concealing these layers with white, so that you only see the organic patterns and shapes of the paint and brushstrokes beneath. This duality of revealing and concealing is intentional. “I remember taking walks during the pandemic and seeing nothing but windows,” explains Kinzelberg. “Similarly, in these paintings, there is something impenetrable about them, but also revealing about the viewer and what they bring to the piece.” Describing her aesthetic and approach for the show pieces, Kinzelberg says, “Think Jackson Pollock meets Gerhard Richter meets Monet,” she laughs. “Resolving contradictions is definitely a theme for the show. I want people to feel energy from each piece, meditate—even to go on a journey. The name of each piece is a window into a subject; the view takes it the rest of the way.” A few years ago, Kinzelberg—who has a degree in Philosophy of Art and Art History from The College of Wooster, Ohio, had been hobby, trying to decide whether she should jump back into a business career, or do something else.
“When I came out of college, I didn’t want to be a starving artist, so I went into other work—first for a PR firm in Cleveland, and then for a management consulting firm in Chicago,” Kinzelberg recalls. “And then I stepped away from all that to raise a family. Once the children were both in school, I knew I wanted to do something to keep growing creatively. I was looking for that second act.” Talking about this with a close friend in the interior design business, Jessica Margot of Jessica Margot Design in Lake Forest, who was also a fan of her work, brought Kinzelberg her first commission. “Jessica had a client who needed a large piece of wall art in their family room,” Kinzelberg recalls, “and asked if I would be willing to create it. Jessica took a big risk referring me, but the result was fabulous. The client loved the work, and I enjoyed the collaboration. So, it was a win for everyone.” Since that initial project, word of Kinzelberg’s work spread fast and every month thereafter saw her busy with a new commission.

“Commissions are so much fun,” she says. “They have a builtin challenge because they are collaborative. I love giving the client a finished piece that is not only an expression of how I view things as an artist but something that is meaningful to them too.” Growing up in Akron, Ohio as the middle child in a family with three daughters, Kinzelberg developed that vision early. “I was captivated by all things visual,” she says. “When I was tiny, my mom recalls that I looked at the world differently than other toddlers, noticing and commenting on colors, proportions, scale, and texture. And I always found ways to communicate emotion in my drawings.” Kinzelberg’s childhood was full of culture and intellectual conversations. Her stepfather had been a professor of history, and her mother’s family members were musicians. “My grandfather, for example, was the music director for the New Jersey State Opera, a composer, guest symphony conductor, and nationally recognized timpanist. He played snare drum with Benny Goodman and Paul Samuel Whiteman. And my uncle is also a prominent

music director, composer, and drummer.” In fact, Kinzelberg’s approach to painting, “is like drumming,” she says. “With a lot of emphasis on the rhythm and stroke, and energy. When I paint, I too focus on rhythm and movement, intentionally interrupting lines, sculpting the surface, and so forth to create tension and feeling.” Most of Kinzelberg’s commissioned works are abstracts, which she creates by layering, removing, and re-layering paint. “It’s an iterative process,” she remarks. “I apply the paint, create a composition, and then start removing and reapplying the paint until an interesting color story and energy emerges. Even if it takes seven layers, I don’t stop until the piece feels alive.” A lot of the paintings Kinzelberg has been commissioned to create are in newer homes. “So I feel it is important for the pieces to have a feeling of nature or history about them—water, stone, rock, sky, even brick. This way, they bring some soul and texture, story, and energy into the space.” In the months ahead, Kinzelberg hopes to do more shows locally, nationally, and eventually internationally. She’s also exploring the stories she tells with her art. “The artists I respect most have a cogent approach to their work—their art and philosophy of life are one and the same. I want the pieces I create to resonate with the viewer so that they see something about their own existence in the work.” Still Life, 30 x 40 inches, oil and acrylic on canvas. Still Life, according to Kinzelberg reflects the many aspects of our lives that are quiet yet very much alive.

DAVE PEQUET AND MATT PEQUET MPI WEALTH MANAGEMENT LLC
After serving in the Navy and being a stock and bond broker for 10 years, in 1986, Dave Pequet founded MPI Wealth Management LLC, a registered investment advisory firm. “We are independent and do not sell any financial products and therefore can act as a client’s fiduciary. Our compensation is not commission-based and structured so that when you are successful, we are successful,” explains Pequet, who welcomed his son, Matt, into the business 18 years ago. Together, they provide conservative asset management tailored to a client’s needs and objectives—always putting the client’s best interests first. “Risk is relative and perceived differently by each and every investor. Our firm has successfully navigated through good markets and bad for 36 years.” Pequet says he is grateful to the family friend who convinced him to go to Wall Street after leaving the Navy. “It turned out to be a very valuable piece of advice,” he says. “We are very proud that the firm has a long-standing, successful track record and has remained independent, family-owned, and active in the community for nearly four decades. I invite you to allow us to utilize this experience to help you design an investment approach that meets your goals and allows you to sleep at night.” For more information, visit mpiwealthmanagement.com.

ANTHONY CHIARITO
ANTHONY CHIARITO & ASSOCIATES INC. When Anthony Chiarito began his career in the insurance industry, he quickly became familiar with one of the most challenging elements of the job. “I had the opportunity to sell a life insurance policy to a friend of mine who is also a Chicago Police Officer. I was diligent in getting my friend to complete all the requirements in order to issue the life policy,” explains Chiarito, who has lived in the Oak Brook/Hinsdale community for 16 years, raising his three daughters here. “Unfortunately, my friend was killed a day after the policy requirements were met. It was certainly a tragedy. However, my friend’s son is better off due to the life insurance policy. Had I not done my job correctly, the tragedy would have still occurred but without the financial safety net of the life insurance policy.” He also learned why the company he’s been working for since 2008, American Family Insurance, is considered one of the best. “They looked for every opportunity to make sure there was coverage for my friend’s son.” After working in the insurance business for 14 years—earning designations as a Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) and a Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist (CLCS)—Chiarito is now an independent owner of an American Family agency, specializing in the high-value insurance market. “We have the ability to offer home, auto, life, and business insurance solutions from American Family Insurance along with solutions from premier insurance carriers such as Chubb and AIG,” he says. “Combined, our team has more than 50 years of experience, which is exemplified by our ability to easily and accurately determine risks and provide tailored solutions to mitigate those risks.” Anthony Chiarito’s office of American Family Insurance serves the greater Western Suburbs from Lemont and La Grange locations. SAM SHARP EVP, NATIONAL SALES GUARANTEED RATE
With more than 20 years in the real estate lending industry and a track record of more than $2.5 billion financed, Sam Sharp says he’s constantly prepared to adapt and evolve. At Guaranteed Rate, he and his team are consistently focused on ways to better serve their clients and improve the overall buying experience. “What sets us apart from our competitors is our execution,” says Sharp. “Using our experience and consistent focus on improvement, we are constantly ready to embrace the changes in our industry—with a focus on creating efficiencies to make the process straightforward and easy.” It’s no wonder Sharp and Guaranteed Rate have been named the No. 1 lender in purchase volume in Illinois three out of the last six years. Sharp says he partners with clients with a singular goal, to help them buy and/or refinance their home, outlining the plan to get there. This ties to one of his personal and professional mantras, being “If you don’t know where you are going, you might end up someplace else.” Sharp enjoys helping his clients get to where they need to be, financed and in the home of their dreams. KYLE CHUDOM
MANAGING DIRECTOR, FINANCIAL ADVISOR CHUDOM HAYES WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP AT MORGAN STANLEY Kyle Chudom, a Hinsdale resident for more than 25 years, dedicates his career to helping clients achieve their dreams. Early on, he realized that building a structured team and incorporating varied professional skillsets would be advantageous to his clients. Kyle was one of the first financial advisors at Morgan Stanley with this mindset and founded the Chudom Hayes Wealth Management Group, which has grown to 14 team members. “Financial planning is the cornerstone of our business. We are committed to helping our clients plan their financial future and maximize their savings and investments. We leverage our diverse talents and help our clients successfully navigate the complexity of each unique financial scenario,” says Kyle. The team also focuses on other areas of investing. There is an arm of the group that embraces women and wealth and the specific needs associated with women and investing. Kyle’s dedication is echoed by the women advisors on the team who specialize in that area of the business. He is also an Investing with Impact Director. As an early advocate of incorporating Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) into portfolios, his passion for investing with impact, led him to the creation of an ETF that invests solely in conscious companies. “One of our most important responsibilities is developing strategies that are suitable for our client’s distinct and specific needs”, he says. Kyle joined Morgan Stanley in 1984 and is a long-standing member of the Chairman’s Club, which recognizes the firm’s leading financial advisors. He is on the 2021 Forbes list of Best in State Wealth Advisors and 2021 Barron’s Top 1,200 Advisors and is quick to mention it would not be possible without the strength and support of his team. JOHN BERGER BRANCH MANAGER GUARANTEED RATE
John Berger prides himself on taking the “mystery” out of mortgages. “The first thing I always say to my clients is, ‘the mortgage process is not as hard as people might think.’ Once I have completed my initial pre-approval conversation, clients always feel more confident about the mortgage process and taking the next steps toward home ownership,” explains Berger, Branch Manager at Guaranteed Rate. Licensed in Illinois and 12 other states, he has been helping families purchase and refinance their dream homes since 1991. “I take extra time up front and throughout the mortgage process to explain each step—from application to closing,” he says. “I encourage my clients to ask as many questions as possible, so that by the time they walk into the closing, they feel educated and comfortable.” Recognizing that each buyer is different, Berger has the experience to be able to determine exactly what they need. “I have been originating all types of mortgages for my clients, but the most common would be Jumbo, Conventional, FHA, and VA Loans for primary residences, second homes, and investment properties,” says Berger, who spends his free time with his wife, their two kids, and dogs Gordy and Gus. “I entered the mortgage profession because it was the perfect combination of business, finance, and sales. And that, coupled with the fact that I am able to help so many individuals realize their dream of owning their first home or simply saving them thousands of dollars from a refinance, makes this profession worthwhile.” For more information, visit people.rate.com/john-berger-755909.

RAJ BHATIA MANAGING DIRECTOR MERRILL LYNCH WEALTH MANAGEMENT
Raj Bhatia is founder of The Bhatia Group, a wealth management team within Merrill Private Wealth Management. For more than 40 years, he has helped high-net-worth clients acquire, grow, and preserve assets—allowing them to pass their wealth to successive generations. One of Bhatia’s favorite anecdotes about his success is the story of signing his first client. “He was a young resident doctor living in the northern suburbs, and I was so excited that I put the phone down without realizing that I did not have his address. When I called back for his address, I realized that I didn’t own a car and would need to switch commuter trains because I lived in the western suburbs,” recalls Bhatia, who holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) designation sponsored by the Investments & Wealth Institute (The Institute) at the Wharton School. “I called him again and asked if he—a prospect at the time—would come pick me up from the train station and drop me back there an hour later. He was quite amused at my request but agreed. I spent an hour with him and his wife that evening where he told me about his hopes and dreams as a married 29-year-old resident with a 6-month-old daughter. In the last 15 minutes of our meeting, he became my client and still is today! That was my first lesson learning that empathy comes from deep listening and that the understanding we develop in listening to our clients over time is the only sustainable advantage we have as advisors.” The Bhatia Group is located at 110 N. Wacker Drive in Chicago. Call 312-325-2676 or visit pwa.ml.com/bhatiagroup/#team. You can connect with Bhatia on LinkedIn.

NeuroEmotional Technique The day-to-day stress in our lives brought on by money, relationships, and work are potential triggers to the health concerns that we may be experiencing. Traumas and unresolved emotions can create what we call “emotional complexes” within the body’s physiology. If left unchecked - stress can cause significant distress to your overall health.

ach fall, Wellness House has been known to host one of the community’s most highly anticipated events. For a number of years—16 to be exact—the annual black-tie ball has been successful at drawing in locals with growing guest counts reaching close to 600 smartly dressed, lively advocates packed into a single ballroom to fundraise for a good cause. The support for Wellness House is so strong and the event so fun that even last year’s lockdown couldn’t stop avid supporters. Like most things during the pandemic, the ball went virtual last year with “Wellness House Ball ... at your house!” and was hosted in 20 homes with party sizes of two to 40 guests in each home. However, this year’s 17th Wellness House signature fall ball is appropriately titled, “Under One Sky,” and with good reason, of course. As last year’s fall ball did, Wellness House’s programs went virtual providing uninterrupted cancer support to participants during quarantine. For 31 years, Wellness House has been providing unparalleled services to support those affected by cancer with specialized programs focusing on affected individuals before, during, and after cancer treatment. Participants are cared for and attended to by seasoned health care experts, providing assistance every step of the way. By going virtual, participants choose from over 485 programs a month in various areas of concentration including exercise, nutrition, stress management, support groups, and counseling. “All of our programs are evidence-based and help people with cancer reduce side effects, learn coping and relaxation techniques, exercise safely for increased energy, and feel less isolated,” says Debra Kwiatt, marketing communications manager of Wellness House. This virtual move increased access to those affected. “Our mission envisions a community where all people affected by cancer thrive,” she says. “Now we offer online and in-person programs that remove geographic barriers, all under one sky.” Planning for the ball began earlier this year when there were still a lot of unknowns due to CDC and government guidelines regarding the pandemic with guest capacity and public health recommendations limiting traditional options. With restrictions now lifted, Wellness House knew just how to make this year’s charity goers feel comfortable with both safety and responsibility in mind. Just like the online and in-person programs, the event name also refers to the three locations the ball will be held at throughout one evening taking place on Friday, October 15. “This year’s event is all about connecting the guests at three separate venues, coming together ‘Under One Sky’ to support Wellness House,” says Kwiatt. This year’s ball will take place at Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook, Chicago Highlands Club in Westchester, and Hinsdale Golf Club in Clarendon Hills. Each location will be led by Wellness House’s members, otherwise known as Luminaries. “Luminaries will be leading the event at each of the three venues and the evening’s program, live auction, and paddle raise will be live at one venue and streamed via video to the other two venues,” says Lisa Kolavennu, executive director of Wellness House. This year’s Luminaries include Angie and Wes Breton; Stephanie and Freddie Brzozowski; Lauren and Matthew Houder; Debbie and Jim Hultquist; Jenna and Ken Julian; Lori and Clay Naccarato; and Beth Sharp. These members have demonstrated
a deep commitment to the mission and success of the non-profit organization. “They were selected for their ability to inspire and influence others to join them in their support of Wellness House,” says Kolavennu. For Angie Breton, cancer is personal. “I’ve had so many loved ones affected directly, in turn affecting me indirectly since I was a child,” she says. “‘Under One Sky’ for Wellness House is just one way we bring awareness to our mission and showcasing the purpose of our organization, enabling individuals affected by cancer to live and thrive the best they possibly can.” She now serves her second term as a member and gets the opportunity and honor of hearing from participants regularly about the extraordinary impact the organization has had not only on themselves, but their loved ones who are children, caregivers, spouses, and family. The programs at Wellness House complement the medical care participants receive through their healthcare teams and offer an avenue for education, growth, expression, and encouragement for them and their loved ones, she says. At the event, participants of Wellness House are given the opportunity to speak directly with the guests to share the impact cancer has made on their lives and how Wellness House was there to support. “These are what we refer to as our ‘Mission Moments’ and these stories are what really hit home when you hear someone’s firsthand experience,” says Breton. Although this year’s event will be different from previous years with the separate locations, moving to a Friday evening rather than a Saturday, and planning a more intimate gathering of cocktailattire-clad guests, opposed to formal, black tie party goers, other traditions remain. “Many of the elements of our traditional ball will continue such as the wine auction, live auction, and paddle raise, as well as a program participant sharing her inspirational story both live and via video,” says Kwiatt. “This year, since there will be three locations, guests can provide the names of those with whom they would like to attend the ball with when tickets are purchased. From there, ticket holders will be assigned to a particular venue based on those guest requests. All Wellness House programs are free and funded by philanthropic contributions. “Our fall fundraising event represents nearly 20 percent of our annual budget, which provides education and support—empowering participants so they will improve their physical and emotional wellbeing. Although the fundraising is certainly important to keep this service going, the beauty of Wellness House’s annual fall ball is connecting the local community and partners throughout the region around the singular mission of supporting people with cancer,” says Kwiatt. “Every donation and ticket sold for ‘Under One Sky’ allows Wellness House to provide support, hope, and community for people affected by cancer.” Wellness House is located at 131 N. County Line Road in Hinsdale, 630-323-5150, wellnesshouse.org/ball-2021.

n a direct flight, in just three hours, we arrived in The Bahamas—famous for its pristine beaches hugging the Atlantic Ocean’s turquoise waters. After a short scenic drive, we arrived at the Baha Mar enclave, consisting of three interconnected resorts, a casino, and an abundance of dining and entertainment options. The resort handled COVID testing efficiently and effectively. Upon arrival, we were escorted to an onsite clinic where we completed forms and received a complimentary COVID-19 Rapid Antigen test before being whisked off to our room and asked to wait until we received our results. After approximately twenty minutes, we received “the green light,” and were off to explore Baha Mar. We began on the east side, where we found the world-class Rosewood—a hotel awash in a serene coastal palate with a British colonial island aesthetic. The words that best describe this resort are tranquil, serene, and luxurious. We adored the Manor Bar on the first floor and the beautifully appointed conservatory. On the enclave’s western end is the hip SLS resort with a spirit that encompasses a playfully mischievous vibe with a hint of sexy. The resort was envisioned as a tropical sanctuary for those who enjoy global culture and style, infusing a spirit of sensuality and glamour. Think upscale Miami Beach. Topping SLS Baha Mar is Skybar, the island’s only rooftop bar and a venue with breathtaking views. From the line to get in, I would say it is also the island’s most popular weekend destination. With a sip of my elderflower martini surrounded by a crowd of the young and the beautiful, I was taken back to my youth, and in an instant, I understood Skybar’s allure. Right in between the Rosewood and SLS is one big happening party at The Grand Hyatt. Also located in the middle of Baha Mar is the Caribbean’s largest casino, extensive high-end shopping (think Cartier, Rolex, and Tiffany & Co.), an endless number of restaurants and lounges, a massive fire fountain, and lots of fun. Depending upon your mood or the basis of the trip (romantic getaway, girls weekend, family sojourn, or golf trip) Baha Mar has something to satisfy every taste, sensibility, and/or purpose. One cannot conjure up an image of The Bahamas without visuals of crystal blue water. Baha Mar offers an epic variety of pools to choose from, each with a distinct energy—tranquil (the pools located near Rosewood), filled with family fun (near the Grand Hyatt), and hip (at SLS). We visited four locations and, of course, Cable beach. Our first day, after awakening from a deep slumber induced by the extensive tour of the Baha Mar property and a late night at Skybar, we headed to the gorgeous Bungalow pool at SLS and a private black and white striped cabana outfitted with couches and a television. It proved the perfect place for acclimation. One spot that spoke to our inner child was the replica of the world’s second deepest known saltwater sinkhole, Dean’s Blue Hole. Here we leaped from a “cliff ” about 20 times, snapping photos of our heroic feats. On another day, after a little siesta poolside at Fortune (the buzzing central pool deck surrounded by palms punctuating the circular movement of the pool’s edge), we spent the afternoon at Cable beach using a myriad of complimentary water sports equipment, including paddleboards and kayaks. Beyond water activities, the resort is known as a culinary destination with the widest array of world-class restaurants, bars, and lounges
in The Bahamas, designed to satisfy every craving, occasion, and mood. Our first night, we dined at the French-inspired Café Boulud. The newest restaurant to Baha Mar offers the glamour of traditional French cuisine in a sophisticated Bahamian setting. Led by globally renowned chef Daniel Boulud, the menu is inspired by his four culinary muses—La Tradition, La Saison, Le Mer, and Le Voyage and highlights the seasonality of local ingredients. My husband began with an appetizer from Le Voyage (World Discovery), a divine yellowfin tuna carpaccio with harissa, crispy chickpeas, chayote, mint, and lemon confit. I started with the Vichyssoise from La Tradition (Classics & Country Cooking). The chef ’s twist on this classic was a chilled avocado soup with shrimp, dill, caviar, and crème fraiche. I will never be able to enjoy the potato/leek version, as the chef ’s take on the
Lagoon pool
Katsuya Dragon Room dish has forever spoiled me. We moved to La Saison (Spring flavors) for our entree of tender Maine Lobster with green asparagus and rice pilaf kissed with “sauce Americaine.” We accompanied the meal with a delicious 2018 Arnaud Lambert Clos de la Rue and topped our exquisite experience with a decadent Chocolate Coulant with a salted caramel interior and a luscious vanilla ice cream. C’est magnifique. Our favorite lunch spot was Costa, the darling little restaurant of linked open-air cabanas, which rests over a Koi pond. Coastal cuisine infused with Mexican flavors offered an unexpected approach to traditional seafood. Musts are the guacamole served with house made chips and any one (or all) of the Ceviches. We sat here for hours enjoying the atmosphere and the movement of the gentle Koi beneath us. Depending upon your daily desires, the lunch possibilities range from white linens and crystal to fun beachside food trucks. The world is literally your oyster.

In the mood for sushi? Another dining hot spot is Katsuya. Rarely have we seen seabass presented to our liking, but Katsuya did it perfectly, and we both proclaimed it to be the best seabass of our lives. The roasted thick piece of Chilean Seabass is served with hints of ginger, soy, and coriander—pure perfection! We savored every bite in the Dragon Room surrounded by a painted serpent writhing up the walls and across the ceiling. The sleek and sultry ambiance envisioned by design icon Philippe Starck adds an element of exotic artistry to each bite. In a nutshell, Katsuya artfully blends master sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi’s fresh take on classic Japanese cuisine with the pulsating vibe of The Bahamas. Our last evening we visited Cleo, located at SLS Baha Mar, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with an energetic atmosphere. My husband and I both agreed that the Brussel sprouts were by far the best we had ever eaten. We have attempted to recreate the dish with little success but it lives on in memory. Dining on fresh Mediterranean small plates next to a vertical garden was the perfect culinary end to a delightful vacation. We weren’t able to visit Carna, but it is top on our list for when we return. A sophisticated steakhouse born from the skill and passion of eighth-generation master butcher Dario Cecchini, Carna features some of the finest cuts of meat in the world. The wine list is extensive, and the atmosphere intimate. We look forward to it.

When it was time to feed our souls, we visited the Baha Mar spa, ESPA. My favorite treatment was the strength and resilience massage. Inspired by the arduous migration of the painted lady butterfly, this massage uses aromatherapeutic oils, yogic stretches, reflexology, a deep muscle massage, and a scalp massage. A fully embracive experience. I am dreaming of returning for a repeat (deuxieme fois)! A must on your itinerary is the Baha Mar Racquet Club. Darling little walkways flanked by dense bushes on either side invoke the feeling of a labyrinth which ends at the charming club—aesthetically similar to the Rosewood. Boasting nine state-of-the-art tennis courts, six are professional hard courts, two Har-Tru clay, and one, the only grass court in the Caribbean. Jim Tressler, the club’s director, gave us a private lesson on one of the Har-Tru courts. We had such fun learning new skills on a beautiful day. Anytime the heat threatened to slow us down, the Bahamian breeze appeared perfectly on cue. Another must is a visit to The Current Gallery. I had the great pleasure of spending the afternoon with Baha Mar’s Creative Arts Director John Cox. Cox’s position encompasses a seemingly endless array of duties. He spends most of his time at The Current, home to Baha Mar’s arts program and studio space designed to support local artists and promote Bahamian arts. He also oversees art installations all over Baha Mar. You will find art everywhere you look, in your room, the spa, reception, hallways, and restaurants. It is a visual feast just walking from your room to the pool. I, being an art lover, found Baha Mar’s collection captivating. The resort encourages guests to partake in tours and classes at The Current—one fan favorite is the sip and paint. We are planning our return visit because it was almost impossible to take part in all that Baha Mar has to offer in less than a week. Next time, we plan to visit the Royal Blue Golf Course (an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course), the brand new Mini Blue Golf (an 18 hole mini golf course), Carna, and of course ESPA. Oh, and Katsuya for a repeat seabass. What an absolute delight to be traveling internationally again. Baha Mar is just a quick plane ride away and the resort has taken a great deal of COVID precautions. Your safe adventure awaits. For more information or to book your stay, visit bahamar.com.

Profile SENIORS AND ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING, OR ADLS WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
What are Activities of Daily Living or ADLs? Activities of daily living (ADLs) is a term used by healthcare professionals to refer to the basic self-care tasks an individual does on a dayto-day basis. These activities are fundamental in caring for oneself and maintaining independence. As a physician, we assess the individual’s ability or inability to perform ADLs as a way of measuring their functional status, especially that of older adults or those with disabilities. Here are the more common ADLs • Functional mobility, such as the ability to walk and transfer in and out of a chair or bed. • Personal hygiene, oral care and grooming, including skin and hair care • Showering and/or bathing • Toileting, which includes getting on/off toilet and cleaning oneself • Dressing, which includes selecting appropriate attire and putting it on • Self-feeding Often the seniors my group helps take care of, have certain limitations with their ADLs, forcing the family to move them to a senior living community. This can cause stress and/or anxiety to the senior but also the families involved, as the senior feels their independence is being taken away. More advanced ADLs are listed below • Housekeeping, laundry and other home care chores • Driving • Money management • Meal preparation • Moving/changing residences • Shopping for groceries and other necessities • Medication management • Using the telephone or computer According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, there
are 12 recognized ADLs necessary to live in co-occupation with others. • Home establishment and maintenance • Meal preparation, including clean-up • Care of others, including being able to select and supervise caregivers • Communication management, includes telephone and computer usage • Financial management • Management and maintenance of health and health-related issues • Shopping • Maintaining and observing religious practices • Child rearing • Community mobility • Pet care • Safety procedures and emergency responses Physicians, geriatric social workers, rehabilitation specialists and others in senior care often evaluate a person’s ability to perform ADLs as part of a functional assessment. Difficulties performing these tasks may signal cognitive decline. Occasionally seniors are able to remain in their homes with the assistance of caregivers or home health services. We advise all families to address any foreseeable decline, to prevent health related issues. These decisions are always tailored for the individual and their families, based on the unique circumstances. Reach out to your trusted health care professional early and have the conversation to create the best outcome for your loved ones.
