PUBLISHER’S NOTE

O

ur August issue is here and we have much to celebrate this month. Let’s start with our cover story, which features inspirational young Hinsdale resident Brittany Jelinek. Co-founder and creative force behind Truffleberry Market, a luxury catering company that is well-known in Hinsdale and beyond, Jelinek grew her small business idea into a multimillion-dollar powerhouse. We applaud her as she now helps other entrepreneurs drive their dream companies to success—carrying forward her mantra that "forward is a speed." We also shine the spotlight this month on the Hinsdale Central Hockey Club’s 50th anniversary and the parents who work to make this club, which operates independently from the high school, a reality. Through their fundraising efforts and support, thousands of players have enjoyed defining moments of their high school years on the ice with their teammates, many continuing to play hockey on the college level. Also be sure to turn to our feature on Hinsdale artist Yvette Lenzi. Even if you have never met Lenzi, chances are that you’ve seen her elegant work around town. She’s also a passionate supporter of many local nonprofits in our area, including Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC), the Zion Lutheran Early Childhood Education Program, and the Hinsdale Historical Society. Dinner Date this month takes us to Kindred in Elmhurst for a sensory experience that's perfect for the end of summer.

I could almost smell the open-flame cooking and sugared firewood from reading the article. August is also the month we present our annual Hinsdale Money and Premier Lawyers special sections. With fall just around the corner, this is the perfect time to get your financial and legal issues in order. Our features bring you the best and the brightest local practitioners in these fields. And don’t forget to turn to our Publisher’s Profiles, which bring the best local businesses directly to your door. This month we receive legal counsel from attorneys Brendan Hammer and Michione Riewer and financial advice from Kamiar Vossoughi, who leads the BMO Harris Private Wealth team in Hinsdale. We also meet Shelly Perkowski of @ properties and hear valuable tips about the college admissions process from Dr. Matthew Pietrafetta, CEO of Academic Approach—just in time for back-to-school. Enjoy the pictures, and good reading. J.W. Conatser

COUNTRY VS. TOWN MEGAN RICHARDS MARTIN

grew up in Akron, Ohio, which explains her appreciation for LeBron James. She earned a degree in communications with minors in fashion and journalism at Ohio University. Her love of fashion was enhanced with a summer studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. After graduating, Megan headed off to London where a job in the public relations department of Estée Lauder ignited her love of all things PR. She owns a public relations firm called Page One Public Relations, a hospitality and lifestyle focused firm that has been awarded recognition for being one of the top PR firms in Chicago for the past six years. Page One represents a variety of clients including the Chicago Marathon, Windy City Smokeout, The Hampton Social, Roka Akor, Yorktown Center, and Mariano’s. Megan and her husband Michael live in the Fullersburg Woods are of Hinsdale. It’s the perfect spot for their daughters Emerson (10) and Leighton (8) to ride their bikes to Salt Creek Club for swimming and tennis. They are also close to walking trails, which cockapoo Poppy enjoys as much as her humans. The couple believes in giving back to the community. Michael is president of the D181 school board and Megan co-chairs the education committee of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club and supports Wellness House, where she utilizes services to support her mom who is living with cancer. It’s a busy, bustling life filled with friends and family. Here are some of this dynamic entrepreneur’s favorites. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR / FASHION EDITOR THERESA DEMARIA HAIR AND MAKEUP LEANNA ERNEST OF DISTINCT ARTISTS On your reading stack? I recently started a book club with some fellow Monroe School moms and it has really made me enjoy reading. We just finished The Idea of You, which I loved, and we are reading Verity now, which is so good. Favorite workout? I work out almost every weekday morning at Burn Bootcamp with some friends and love the workout. It changes daily and it motivates me to meet my friends there which helps drag me out of bed at 5:35am every morning. Guilty pleasure? Anything on BRAVO. Music you love? I love all types of music and go to a lot of concerts. This year I plan to see Zac Brown Band, The Lumineers, and Harry Styles. Advice you would give to your younger self? Don’t sweat the small stuff and everything has a way of working itself out.

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? It seems to always be Harry’s House workout clothes when working from home and dropping the kids off to school and running errands around town. At night it is usually jeans and heels or a casual dress from Vintage Charm or Meredith Jaye. Favorite walk? I love to walk Fullerburg Woods. Favorite sounds or soundtrack? Right now I am loving the new Harry Styles album. Can’t leave the house without? My Phone and usually my kids. Place to celebrate? We tend to go to Fuller House weekly! I also love Il Mio in Clarendon Hills. It’s such a great addition to the area. Best quick bite or hidden gem? I go to Toni Patisserie once a week for their brie and apple sandwich—it is so good! I am also a loyal Hinsdale Fruit Store customer—you can’t beat that salad bar. Favorite festival or special event? We love Uniquely Thursdays in the summer. I also enjoy shopping at the Hinsdale Farmers Market and of course, there is nothing better than Fourth of July parade and celebration. Best thing about the country? I love the community here—it really is such a special place to raise your family. Worst thing about the country? Honestly not much—I love everything about it. The perfect day is? Starting the day with a workout at Burn Boot Camp, going to brunch at Yia-Yia’s with my family, pool time at Salt Creek Club and dinner at Fuller House or Il Mio.

Your style is? I am usually in the city for work meetings so nice denim and a shirt or a dress to easily get from meeting to meeting. Favorite walk? I love walking on the lake or the riverfront. I miss my morning routine of going to the Green City Market and then walking on the lake every Saturday when we lived in the city. Can’t leave the house without? My phone and Mac computer for work meetings and navigating around town. Place to celebrate? I love RPM Seafood. The food is delicious and the views are amazing. I also love having rosé and oysters sitting outside at River Roast. My husband and I always seem to pick Shaw’s Crab House or Joe’s Stone Crab when celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Favorite festival or special event? Windy City Smokeout—there is nothing better than great music and food with the city as the backdrop! Place to shop? I love shopping on Southport when I can get there or the boutiques on Rush and Oak Streets. Best thing about town? Chicago is just such an amazing town and I feel so lucky to live close to it. The architecture, the food, the events, the museums, the neighborhoods. Besides traffic and the winter weather, there is not much I don’t RPM Seafood love about Chicago! The perfect day is? Starting the day with a Soul Cycle ride, lunch with friends at NoMi in the Park Hyatt, a pedicure at Cowshed at Soho House, some shopping and a late dinner at RL would be a pretty great day!

COSTANZA ON CUSTODY: THE ART OF DOING THE OPPOSITE

perceive of herself as being a model litigant, but such grudgingness can also be seen as a sign of rigidity or a sign of that parent having no capacity for flexibility, generosity, or cooperation. With these clients that I typically conduct a series of re-framing sessions, designed to provide what Jerry gave to George at Monk’s Café – the gift of “The Opposite.” Everyone involved in the family law system have seen a lot. The patterns and approaches taken by litigants to “win” or to gain a leg up in the litigation are well known and easily recognizable. It is only through an intuitive and deep understanding of what drives perceptions, opinions, and out-

WORDS BY BRENDAN HAMMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

n the season five finale of the television comedy series Seinfeld, George Costanza laments his many failures and the dismal state of his life at that point. His friend and sounding board, Jerry Seinfeld, suggests to him that “if every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.” Taking the bit by the teeth, George goes so far as to take the radical step of telling the truth to Victoria, an attractive woman he meets. Rather than making outlandish claims to being an architect or marine biologist (his go-to faux professions) or using his phony alias, Art Vandelay, George states unequivocally: “My name is George. I am unemployed and I live with my parents.” Victoria is impressed with George’s transparency and honesty and agrees to go on a date with him. On a roll, George lands an interview with the New York Yankees; and in continuing to embrace the philosophy of “The Opposite,” he criticizes the owner, George Steinbrenner, for slipshod management of the team and lands a job with the team. Ultimately, George even moves out of his parents’ home – coming to a full embrace of the art of doing the opposite. While there is seemingly little that one could expect to learn from George Costanza about relationships, let alone parenting and custody litigation, the notion of “The Opposite” is one that frequently comes to mind when helping many clients navigate the unusual world of custody litigation. The instincts of many clients are, if I am being honest, no less poorly honed than George’s were. This is not a criticism of clients; it is a simple recognition that the venue and process in which they find themselves is one they are not knowledgeable about and cannot unpack without guidance. Clients often speak, write, and act in ways that they believe are going to make them look favorable to the Judge, the custody evaluator, or the child’s representative/guardian ad litem. However, their efforts often do not have the intended effect and are routinely viewed as representing the opposite of what was anticipated. Complicating matters further, the other parent is often himself similarly. This can show itself in the parent who has binders of organized materials showing every single time the other parent was 10 minutes late to a pickup or drop off. It can be a parent who can rattleoff a list of negative traits of the other party longer than Martin Luther’s theses but cannot suggest a single positive parenting trait. A parent who insists upon punctilious adherence to strict interpretation of vague or hortatory language in court orders might

comes in litigation that a client can come to see the self-inflicted wounds they create by speaking and acting in ways that are not actually designed to win anything except the satisfaction that comes from being right. All too often, Clients trip themselves up in litigation because of the fixation upon needing and wanting to be right. They often want vindication, approval and approbation. Judges, by contrast, do not care about who is right – they want to arrive at good (or at least less bad) outcomes. There is a significant chasm between those two goals. George Constanza needed to impress. He dreamt up exotic careers and names to operate as masks for the fact he was unemployed and living at home. When he embraced radical authenticity – his world changed for the better (at least temporarily). There is a critical lesson there for litigants and participants in custody matters: honesty, not excuses. Graciousness, not guilt. Benevolence, not blame. In the custody setting, a credible parent worthy of being trusted is a parent who owns their errors, shows growth and development, acts in a “kidcentric” manner, and demonstrates patience, flexibility and forbearance. No parent ever easily admits that their conduct is not emblematic of those things. But it often isn’t. It is my job to help folks see that. Attorney Brendan Hammer may be reached at bjh@hammer.llc or 312-497-5619.

Your Guide to Western Suburbs Happenings.

CHRIS LUKINS 630.956.4646 lukinshomenetwork.com

The word ‘community’ means more than a group of people living in the same place. It is a feeling of fellowship with those around you, where common interests and pride in your surroundings create a unified feeling of home. At the Lukins Home Network, we feel that no place in the Midwest captures this idea better than the western suburbs of Chicago. This area offers unparalleled residential living among quiet streets, beautiful parks, and a wealth of amenities. Here are a few of our favorites!

Cantigny Park, Wheaton Cantigny Park is one of the crown jewels of the Western Suburbs. Its gardens, golf, and museums welcome over 400,000 guests annually. Cantigny Gardens features 29 acres of lush formal gardens that offer exceptional beauty in all seasons. The #chairsofcantigny—distinct yellow and orange chairs, sofas, and lounges—are always on the move throughout the gardens and are a favorite spot for photos. The Tank Park, a favorite of young and old, is a “hands-on’’ experience with tanks from WWI to Desert Storm. Cantigny Golf is recognized as one of Chicagoland’s best courses and includes 27 scenic holes, the 9-hole Youth Links, and a full-service clubhouse with outstanding dining and banquet facilities. Three miles of walking trails surround the perimeter and offer ever-changing natural beauty. Cantigny bustles year-round but especially in the summer when it hosts outdoor concerts, movies, and Cruise Nights, as well as horticulture workshops, fitness classes, and more. View the complete calendar of summer events at cantigny.org/events. Lake Ellyn, Glen Ellyn Among all of Glen Ellyn’s wonderful amenities, Lake Ellyn stands alone as the proverbial “heart” of the community. Straight out of a storybook, this 11-acre lake and adjoining park is the setting for many Village festivals and celebrations, and is revered for its picturesque, four-season

2

beauty. The 25-acre Lake Ellyn Park features a playground, clay tennis courts, catch-and-release fishing, Veteran’s Memorial and a picnic area. A mile-long trail winds through the park and around the perimeter of the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy a picturesque view while jogging or biking. The restored Lake Ellyn Boathouse is a unique setting for weddings and graduation parties and a welcome warming shelter for ice-skaters in the winter. Lake Ellyn truly shines during the Independence Day holiday! The July 4th festivities culminate in the spectacular fireworks display which lights up the lake in a blaze of color and is a scene from a storybook! Morton Arboretum, Lisle The Morton Arboretum is the perfect place to walk, bike, snowshoe, cross country ski, bird watch, take classes, or simply immerse yourself in nature’s beauty and feel connected to the natural world. The grounds offer an oasis of over 222,000 plants, magnificently tended trees, 16 miles of hiking trails, 9 miles of paved roads, and 900 acres of natural areas. The four-acre Children’s Garden is an interactive natural playground with engaging and interactive themed gardens. The Arboretum bustles with activity in the summer months! A variety of adult, family, and children’s programs run throughout the summer and involve hands-on exploration and learning. Even the four-legged friends have their special days at the Arboretum, with designated dog admission days and “Tails on the Trails” events. Visit Mortonarb.org/explore to plan your visit!

Your Local Expert in Golf. The Extra Nine What’s better than a luxuriously tranquil, 18-hole golf community to spend your summer days at? An extra nine holes! Being a resident of White Eagle Golf Community for over 28 years, I have great passion for selling and educating buyers on the benefits of enjoying the many activities in White Eagle: all 27 holes and beyond. The 27hole golf course offers many golfers the challenge they are seeking—whether beginner or expert. Any-Level Adventure Another major draw (no pun intended) to White Eagle is twofold in its overall playability and the challenge it provides. Whether you’re a beginner in your first couple of years consistently on the course, or an expert who’s been playing for years, White Eagle will allow you to push yourself and get better without subtracting an ounce of fun or enjoyment from the process. But Wait, There’s More! Even when/if you’re not golfing, the White Eagle Golf Community offers a world-class experience for all tastes and preferences outside the course. There is a homeowners-only clubhouse and swimming pool, a tennis court, and three surrounding parks to enjoy! Work Hard, Play Hard After a long day on (or off) the course, nothing quite compares to the private White Eagle Golf Club Clubhouse, which offers a top-tier, luxury dining experience, a beautiful outdoor patio to enjoy the summer sun, a firepit to enjoy your favorite cocktail as the sun sets on the horizon, and JUST OPENED Pickleball courts with open-air dining at the club swimming pool. A Serene Scene Another Private country club in Naperville is Cress Creek. This is a storied golf community alive with properties meeting your needs at many different price points in the North end of Naperville, serving Naperville school district 203. A Ron Prichard designed golf course, founded in 1963, is the place for family fun and activities. Member Dining is available for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Tennis is staffed with highly qualified professionals, and the pool is fantastic.

From fine-dining experiences, to upscale boutiques, to self-care activities, our community features a variety of ways for you to indulge. If you’re currently moving, just finished moving, or planning a move, my hope is that these recommendations allow you to find some much needed relief and relaxation in your day-to-day life.

Designer Fashion: Sweet William Sweet William is my favorite spot to treat myself to highend designer fashion. While I can’t shop here as often as I’d like to, the staff still makes it a point to remember me, and all of their clients, by name. If you’re sometimes unsure of what to try on, like myself, they’re fantastic at knowing which items will best suit your style and body type. Plus, they’re excellent at helping me pair pieces together and accessorize with items I may not have thought to try on my own, but always end up loving! Self Care: Zazu For the ultimate and oh-so-indulgent self-care day, you’ve got to incorporate a trip to Zazu. An incredible spa offering every service imaginable, Zazu is my go-to for facials and other spa services. They always make the experience incredibly luxurious and relaxing, which is just what I need every now and then to recharge. Fine Dining: Nabuki Whether it be a special occasion, holiday, or just because, Nabuki is one of my go-to restaurants that allows me to indulge in some of my favorite foods. Serving a variety of Japanese inspired dishes and sushi, this local spot never disappoints. They’re often adding new and exciting rolls to their menu, and the servers never hesitate to offer excellent recommendations based on your interests. My favorite roll is the Stanley Cup, so be sure to stop by and give it a try for yourself! Hair: Elevate If you’re in need of a cut, styling, or color, Elevate is my favorite hair salon. My go-to stylist and owner of the salon, Maureen, always takes such great care of me. The salon itself is beautiful and trendy, and the products they use and offer are top-notch. Book an appointment at Elevate today and tell Maureen I sent you!

Hidden Gems in Chicagoland. When you think of Chicago, the first things that come to mind are probably the Willis Tower, Millennium Park, and the Chicago River. But did you know that there is so much more to this city? In fact, it’s home to many hidden gems that you may overlook as a tourist.

CARMEN SALERNO 708.935.4224 carmen.salerno@compass.com

These hidden gems can be found in every corner of Chicago. From its beautiful architecture and parks to lesser-known museums, here are 5 hidden gems found in Chicago that are perfect for a day of sightseeing:

Sapori Napoletani “Sapori Napoletani in a Norwood Park is by far one of the best Neapolitans on this side of the Atlantic!” The pizzas at Sapori Napoletani are prepared in a blazing-handmade hot wood-fired oven by Antonio Vitiello. Neapolitan pizzas have expertly char-marked crusts, which are created by expert Neapolitans. A family of four could easily eat one of these pizzas, but the pizza itself is light on the palate and disappears quickly. The Margherita comes with vibrant sauce, creamy mozzarella, and aromatic basil. You can also eat it with a knife and fork because it is quite soft in the center, which is a hallmark of the style (a pizzeria). Trattoria Gianni “Al fresco dining at Trattoria Gianni calls to mind the open-air cafes of Italy while surrounding you with the sights and sounds of a picture-perfect summer evening in Chicago.” Trattoria Gianni, an Italian family-owned trattoria, has become a significant part of Chicago’s dining scene since its opening in 1988. It is the most renowned Italian restaurant in Lincoln Park’s Theatre District, and its brick walls, white tablecloths, wood floors, and more contribute to a rustic, genuine ambiance. These items, in addition to the wonderful array of pasta, entrees, and wines, make Trattoria Gianni the ideal spot for those who wish to dine in Chicago’s areas and have a taste of Italy.

Henry C. Palmisano Nature Park “I love this park. It’s gorgeous. and a place I visit often to meditate”. The Henry C. Palmisano Nature Park, previously known as Stearns Quarry, is a 26.60-acre Chicago location at the heart of the Bridgeport community. It has developed from coral reefs to quarry to landfill to park over the course of its history. Each stage of development relied heavily on the next. As a result, the park has a fishing pond, preserved quarry walls, interpretive wetlands trails, a sports field, a running track, and a hill with dramatic views of the Chicago skyline. Pullman National Monument Pullman Is Chicago’s first national monument and played an important role for civil rights. In 2015, Pullman National Monument became the first National Park Service site in Chicago. The park preserves the tale of one of the United States’ first planned industrial communities, the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago, where many historical structures are now located. Chicago Cultural Center The Chicago Cultural Center is a must-see destination in Chicago, the nation’s first free municipal cultural center. The magnificent landmark structure, which was Chicago’s first public library when it opened in 1897, contains two beautiful stained-glass domes, and hundreds of free cultural exhibitions and performances are presented annually. 5

Your Guide to Moving into Luxury in the Western Suburbs.

Schools One of the main reasons that people gravitate to the Western Suburbs of Chicago is the excellence of the educational systems. Hinsdale Central High School is a great example of the excellence of education that you can find here. It is a nationally ranked high school that is one of the top public high schools in the state of Illinois. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams. Athletics, arts and culture, and clubs also perform best-in-class and supplement the excellence in academics. Transportation The Western Suburbs has access to 2 airports. O’Hare is a large international airport with many direct flights. Also, Midway Airport has some international destinations and is national as well. Together they make Chicago a hub. The Metra train of Burlington Northern connects the suburbs to the city and the expressways. And the expressways also feed directly from the suburbs and into the national highways system. Great access to regional and national transportation is critical for the companies and their workers. AYSO Soccer, Little League Baseball and Library Storytimes The Western Suburbs is built for activities of families and children. Open spaces of the park systems allow for recreation, arts and culture, and enhanced lifestyles of children to begin to explore their interests young and learn to enjoy and compete at the levels they desire. Leisure/Fitness OakBrook Park District—The local park districts throughout the towns are geared to pre-school, elementary and high school, active adults, and senior activities. In addition, the private fitness centers and country clubs add to the enjoyment of leisure that is so vital to a healthy lifestyle and just plain fun!

Your Local Expert in Enjoying Life & Making Connections. Enjoying life & making connections are two things I am very passionate about. In Oak Park/River Forest and all the Western Suburbs, there are endless opportunities to do both. I’ve highlighted some of my favorites that I think every Oak Park/ River Forest local would agree with.

Travel Some of the biggest joys of life come from exploring new areas and learning about new cultures. You don’t have to get on an airplane to find new adventures (although we love to do that). Throughout the suburbs of Chicagoland to the city, there are endless places and sites to travel to and explore. Sometimes, the best way to enjoy life is to travel and be a tourist in your own town. Golf Making and maintaining connections is one of my biggest joys. Golf is an activity where you can meet new people, learn more about old friends or spend time alone. The suburbs of Chicago have some of the most spectacular golf courses, which is one of my favorite places to make connections.

Historic Homes in Oak Park While our team is immersed in real estate constantly, the historic homes in Oak Park/River Forest are always a sight I would recommend. Between the architecture and history, doing a full tour or even just walking past the exterior is an incredible experience. It’s fascinating to see how real estate has evolved in our own backyards. 9

Hinsdale native John Botti practices family law at Oak Brook-based Botti Law Firm, P.C. LARA CLEARY, PARTNER HANSEN & CLEARY, LLC

What started as a childhood speech articulation issue for attorney Lara Cleary has grown into a successful law career today. Cleary, who partnered with attorney Jennifer Hansen in 2017 to create Hansen & Cleary, LLC, credits her time receiving speech services and helping students in her elementary school’s special education program as an inspiration for her career. “Based on this experience, I became a special education teacher, taught in the Chicago Public Schools for a few years, and then went to law school with the express purpose of representing individuals with disabilities,” Cleary says. After law school, she partnered with her mentor, Brooke Whitted, to form Whitted & Cleary in 2001 where they practiced for 15 years before Whitted’s death. That is where she met Jennifer Hansen—a practiced attorney who attended the Universiteit Maastricht in the Netherlands to obtain a LL.M. in European and Comparative Law after law school in Wyoming. When Hansen returned to Chicago and took on a role of assistant public defender in Lake County, she had every intention of practicing at a big firm in International and Human Rights Law. But, as fate would have it, Hansen fell in love with the criminal defense side of law. “I began to realize that many of my clients were adults with disabilities or mental health issues, and I found that my empathy and understanding of individuals with disabilities really helped my representation,” Hansen says. Today, the two, along with another highly skilled attorney and paralegal, make up the team at Hansen & Cleary—a boutique law practice that focuses on special education law, school law, mental health law, and other disability law. Hansen and Cleary pride themselves on providing sound legal advice with empathy and attentiveness—qualities that have attracted many client referrals over the past five years. MATTHEW D. ELSTER PARTNER BEERMANN LLP

Since graduating from Notre Dame Law School in 2010, Matthew D. Elster has focused his practice on civil appeals, both as a law clerk for an appellate court justice and in private practice, primarily representing domestic relations clients in all stages of trial and appellate litigation. Elster, who serves on the Associate Board of One Tail at a Time, an animal rescue agency in Chicago, says his deep knowledge of the law, a wide breadth of legal experience, and his ability to craft winning arguments sets him apart from the competition. “It’s not over until it’s over,” he shares with his clients from the start. “Invariably, every case that goes to trial involves a winner and a loser. In family law cases, losing often involves far more than just money. An unfavorable result at trial is not the end. The appellate process provides clients with the ability to right wrongs which may have occurred in the trial court.” He admits that every case he takes on is unique, with its own set of facts, legal issues, and problems to solve. He enjoys the opportunity to help his clients. For more information, visit beermannlaw.com/team/ matthew-d-elster.

BRENDAN HAMMER HAMMER FAMILY LAW

Brendan Hammer entered college interested in the performing arts. “I wanted to be a playwright or an actor,” says Hammer, today an attorney focusing on complex, high-net-worth family law matters. “I eventually realized litigation was a way to use my communicative and emotive skills in concrete ways to make a tangible difference for clients and their families.” Interestingly enough, he says it is that background that sets him apart. “Litigation is a combination of sales, marketing, psychology, and theater. Mastery of the law is necessary but not sufficient to excellent trial advocacy,” adds Hammer, a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, who was named one of Crain’s Most Influential Minority Lawyers in 2017 and serves on the advisory council at the David Lynch Foundation (Chicago). “My approach to litigation is informed by a deep focus on the behavioral sciences, cognitive biases and heuristics, persuasion, storytelling, interpersonal psychology, and decision making amid uncertainty.” The first thing he tells clients is that litigation is not about getting moral vindication or emotional validation. “Adjust your expectations to the achievable. There are no prizes for ‘Best Spouse in a Supporting Role’,” he says. “Nassim Taleb once said, ‘There are two types of people, those who try to win an argument and those who try to win. They are never the same.’ In practicing law, I try to stay focused on the signal, not the noise. I try to win.” For more information, visit hammer.llc.

Now 25 years into the practice and being internationally recognized for her achievements, Harmon prides herself on encouraging clients to look towards brighter horizons and helping them build a future that is both financially and emotionally secure. Her philosophy, which she imparts to clients, is simple: focus on the future as quickly and early as possible. “When clients focus on the past, they tend to get stuck there and not achieve their best results,” says Harmon. “There are few opportunities we have as adults to reinvent ourselves and get a fresh start. Divorce provides that opportunity, should you choose to take it.” In addition to her proactive approach to divorce, Harmon is an incredibly versatile attorney, who is exceptionally skilled in both litigation and mediation with a stellar track record for success. Harmon focuses her sophisticated practice on complex family law cases involving multi-generational wealth, business valuation, and complex trusts and estates. Adding to her top-tier guidance, she is a champion for the next generation of women in law. She is both a member of the Executive Committee and the first female Managing Partner at her firm. Harmon, a working mother herself, notes the importance for young female lawyers to learn from other successful female leaders like herself. “It gives young women the professional confidence that they’ll be okay and that there is a path for them to have both professional and personal success—it may not be easy, but they don’t have to choose one over the other.” For more information, visit sdflaw.com/meighan-harmon/bio.

Her appreciation of effective communication and a desire to help people in difficult times led her to family law, where she has been honored as one of the top 50 most influential women in law and listed in Best Lawyers in America. Jochner is the ardent voice for her high-asset appellate clients seeking to protect hard-won trial victories or looking to reverse adverse rulings, while also serving as her firm’s go-to legal problem solver for critical trial pleadings requiring sophisticated analysis, advocacy, and drafting. “The stakes are about as high as they can get when family law issues become contentious: a divorce is a ‘watershed moment’ because day-to-day life will never be the same,” she explains. Jochner—a former law clerk to two Chief Justices of the Illinois Supreme Court, a sought-after speaker, and a recognized thought leader who has penned more than 200 articles—has the unquestioned expertise, reputation, and credibility to tell the compelling stories of her clients in a way that strongly resonates with judges. MICHAEL L. LODERMEIER MICHAEL L. LODERMEIER, P.C.

Michael L. Lodermeier pursued a career in law because he takes satisfaction in helping people. “Family law is an area of law that clients truly need the help and counsel of a competent and compassionate attorney. Many clients come to us at one of the lowest points of their lives,” says Lodermeier, who has been practicing law for more than 21 years. “Clients many times feel lost and do not have anyone to turn to for support. I am honored to be that support.” He concentrates his practice in matrimonial law. Lodermeier has extensive trial experience and is never shy about taking a matter to trial, however, he also understands that most cases can be handled with deft negotiation and attention to the family dynamic to resolve the dispute without the need of costly and emotional litigation. He enjoys a diverse client base, from highnet-worth individuals to clients with more modest means. “Regardless of income or status, I treat each client with the same steadfast dedication to their case” explains Lodermeier, who has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer since 2008. Lodermeier recalls advice he received from a business consultant. “She said if you return every phone call within 24 hours, you will never have a shortage of clients,” he adds. “I’ve learned that it sends the message to the client that I care, and I respect their time. I believe it has had a significant impact on the success of my practice.” For more information, visit mllfamilylaw.com.

JAMES QUIGLEY SHANA VITEK

DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW PARTNERS BEERMANN LLP For the past 20 years, James Quigley and Shana Vitek have perfected their unique approach to handling divorce cases using the benefits of a team approach. Often when clients are selecting a divorce lawyer, they are torn between wanting a “shark” who will aggressively fight for their rights, and an attorney who takes a collaborative approach to amicably resolve their case outside the court system in the best interest of their family. Quigley’s and Vitek’s distinct practice styles complement each other, with the result being that their divorce clients have the best of both worlds. Quigley is a top litigator in family law who thrives on competition, having tried hundreds of family law cases in his 30-year career. Vitek is an experienced litigator as well but is also a mediator and collaborator who has settled hundreds of cases without the need for trial. “We seek to handle every case the easy way first. However, a cooperative divorce takes two parties with that same mindset,” says Quigley. Vitek adds, “If one party takes an unreasonable position and litigation becomes necessary, you want the best trial team possible waiting in the wings.” Quigley and Vitek stress the importance of devising a game plan at the beginning of the process, considering the facts of each case, the issues in dispute, the other party, and the opposing attorney. They work with their clients to develop an individualized strategy geared toward each client’s specific goals and concerns. Both Quigley and Vitek are Fellows in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the gold standard for family lawyers. Quigley is currently President of the Illinois Chapter and Vitek is on the Board of Managers. They have successfully represented athletes, entertainers, and other high-profile clients, reaching confidential settlements when possible and litigating when necessary. he Hinsdale Central Hockey Club (HCHC) was founded in 1972, by newly arrived Hinsdale resident, F. Regis Kenna. Then, like now, Hinsdale Central’s robust roster of sports did not include hockey. Plans were made to form a club organization typical for the period. An organization independent of the high school. Coaches were hired to hold tryouts and train the athletes. In another parallel to today, tryouts produced high turnouts, with enough talented players to form both varsity and JV teams. A parent run organization staffed by independent coaches dedicated to player development came to life. The club is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. Thousands of players have made lifelong friends and enjoyed the defining moments of their high school years on the ice with their teammates. It is an extraordinary program that regularly catapults players to the next level of competition, whether in college or straight to professional hockey. HCHC remains independent of the school and parent run. The club is remarkably dedicated to player and character development. Members and players are rightfully proud of the club’s long history rich in tradition and reputation. Part of that sterling reputation is built on the club’s support of athletes who need help in covering the cost of playing. Hockey is an expensive sport, with ice time required for both practice and play. Add those expenses to attractive salaries for a full coaching staff and the cost to participate rises.

HCHC is devoted to the idea that players who want to play and who have the skills to play should not be prohibited from playing for financial reasons. In partnership with the Red Devil Athletic Hardship Fund, the club is hosting a fabulous fun evening to raise funds for club athletes. The Red Devil Athletic Hardship Fund supports hockey players and other sports for which participants and their families shoulder all costs. “Scholarships have been granted to hockey players, gymnasts, dancers, and other athletes,” says Tina Weller, fundraising director for HCHC The fund is managed by experienced financial professionals with ties to Hinsdale Central athletics. They are parents, alumni, and in some cases, both. “We are lucky to have exceptional financial stewardship of the fund,” says Weller. The board of HCHC remains as active and involved as when Kenna established the club five decades ago. This savvy group knows that fundraising must remain a priority. They also know that building community is important. And so, the idea of a fun night out, not in their rink attire, came to life in Fire and Ice, which will be held on Saturday, September 10 around the pool at a private Hinsdale residence. Attendees will enjoy music, drinks, and delicious bites while ensuring that all families can participate in club sports at Hinsdale Central. hinsdalecentralhockey.net

Best of Both Worlds Chicago Precision CEO Joanna Zelaya finds her personal bliss on an area farm. WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES

J

oanna Zelaya always envisioned a life such as this. She would live out her days on acres of land alongside her family and a slew of animals, land that would fill her mentally and nourish her physically via the crops she would plant, land that she could someday hand down to her children so they too could live out their own dreams upon it. And it’s these dreams that are beginning to come true. “It’s always been our dream to be self-sufficient,” Zelaya says from the home she purchased with her husband back in 2017. “It’s been my parent’s dream, and it’s become my family’s dream.” Of course, life at home is just a small piece of the impressive life of Zelaya, who spends her days working as the CEO of Chicago Precision, a much-respected family business located in

Elk Grove Village that works to provide custom machined parts to multiple industries such as aerospace, defense, and medical. In fact, Zelaya’s role as one of the few female CEOs in the manufacturing space and her interest in expanding into additive machining recently allowed her the chance to meet President Biden during his recent visit to launch the AM Forward Initiative in Ohio this past May. “It was so surreal,” she says. “I will never, ever forget it.” It’s yet another impressive milestone on a professional journey that began when Zelaya was just a little girl growing up in Chicago under the watchful eyes of her parents, who came to the states from Poland in the mid-seventies to escape communism. After graduating from Loyola University Chicago and joining the Peace Corps, Zelaya found herself desperately trying to find her footing, both personally and professionally.

“I was feeling a little lost,” Zelaya remembers. “Luckily, my dad is amazing, and he knows how to help people find their direction. So, he asked me to come work at his company.” His company was and is ERA Industries, a well-known manufacturing company that at the time was having trouble getting their quality systems certified. However, even with relatively no experience, Zelaya took it on and soon had the company on the right track while, at the same time, attending Kellogg School of Management. And once again, Zelaya’s father stepped in, encouraging his daughter to open her own business. “He knows me so well,” she chuckles. “I’ve always been very independent. I never liked working for anyone. I felt like I always had to have control. If I didn’t have control, I wasn’t going to get passionate about it.” Luckily, Zelaya’s passion soon overflowed into Chicago Preci-

sion, which opened in 2003. “I see it as a benefit to be a female in this industry,” she explains. “If I’m the only woman in the room, they’re going to remember me. And a lot of times that’s the first step to forming partnerships thru which Chicago Precision can be the best company it can be.” But when life in the office becomes too much, it’s her home that she finds her greatest respite. Truly, the sky’s the limit…both for Zelaya and her dad. “He has worked so hard,” she reflects. “He came to the states with nothing. He was working two jobs. He didn’t speak English. He had to go to English classes at night. (Pauses.) It’s a perfect example of the American dream. If you work really hard and are passionate about what you do, you can make all of your dreams come true.”

The Success Whisperer Hinsdale’s Brittany Jelinek conquered the catering world. Now she’s helping others turn their dreams and business ideas into exquisite realities. There’s something happening right now. It’s like a nebula is going to explode as people rush to harness their creativity. It’s like a nebula is going to explode. I want to be a part of it. In the end this is really helping good people do good things” says Brittany Jelinek. She is the co-founder and creative force behind Truffleberry Market, the exquisite catering company every chic Hinsdale and Chicago hostess has on speed dial. Jelinek grew Truffleberry from a small operation to a multi-million-dollar powerhouse. Ten years in, while exploring new spaces, a different path appeared. Jelinek guided the sale of Truffleberry to The Paramount Group. This final phase of business may have been the most difficult, but this entrepreneurial chef handled it with her signature grace. After a pause, opportunities to guide and consult began popping up for Brittany. She was accepted into a masters program for psychology, but chose to defer. Instead, she’s using those soft skills along with the hard lessons learned in scaling a business so beautifully. “My new business is The Helm Co. I’m working with 10 people right now, all in various phases of their businesses. Whether they want to grow or just breathe easier, I’m here for it. Catering is a logistics business, a very controlled chaos, which helps me help my clients,” says Jelinek. Having been completely entrenched in all aspects of Truffleberry, there really are no roadblocks she hasn’t navigated, nor any tricky wickets she hasn’t negotiated. This experience is everything for business owners looking for a trusted sounding board. From brand identity to growth strategies, Helm Co. is full service without the fuss. That’s intentional. “I know what it’s like to try and jam creativity into short bursts of time,” the busy mom says. “That is a superpower for a lot of women, one I encourage leaning into.” Brittany’s philosophy is that each decision matters, and while she’s not encouraging anyone to overthink, being intentional with each choice is the best way to propel any business forward. “One of mentors had a saying, ‘forward is a speed,’ and that really resonates with me. Just keep moving forward and whatever you’re working toward will

align,” Jelinek says. When not working with clients, Brittany is loving life in her hometown of Hinsdale. With her husband, two boys, family, a bevy of friends, and an adventurous spirit, you might find her nipping in and out of local favorites like Altamurra and Toni Patisserie or playing paddle with a big group of women.

This is someone who is making the absolute most out of life. Someone who shows us that second acts, third acts, any acts, can be joyful, fruitful, and successful. “I feel like a pioneer of entrepreneurial emotion,” says Jelinek. Expect great things from this lovely woman who has already achieved so much, yet truly seems to be just getting started.

rt breathes life into a room, enhancing the atmosphere and expressing the spirit of those who live there. Artist Yvette Lenzi creates works with which collectors fall in love. For proof, flip through this magazine. Most issues have a Lenzi original somewhere in the pages. Whether it’s a home tour, images from a gallery party, or a tastemaker photographed in her favorite room, the space is often adorned by one of these gorgeous canvases. “I grew up in Riverside with a wonderful family. I’ve always been artistic. I’ve always been creative, which led me to a career as an art teacher,” Lenzi explains. She smiles as she recalls her mother, a major influence on her life. “She would say, ‘paint me something’ and I would.” Motherhood and teaching kept Lenzi busy, and her warm spirit drew people to her along the way. “I’m so fortunate to be supported by a wonderful group of women who encourage me to paint,” says Lenzi. “My tennis friends, fellow hockey moms and fellow PTA members have been amazing friends and the best cheerleaders,” she adds. Through this network of extraordinary ladies, Yvette became a supporter of local organizations, including Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC), the Zion Lutheran Early Childhood Education Program, and the Hinsdale Historical Society. “Being connected to my community is so important to me, and I’m hoping to create a legacy. Giving back is a wonderful way to be remembered someday,” says Lenzi. Yvette’s aura of positivity is so complete that she even spins the soggy morning of the Hinsdale Kitchen Walk as a grand adventure. “I debuted my Little Delights, which are small 6” x 9” paintings that are perfect for collecting or gift giving. Sine the Kitchen Walk kicks off Mother’s Day weekend, it made me so happy that

Artwork from the Sand and Storm series Photography by Julianne Green

these works were snapped up as gifts from daughters to mothers and mothers to daughters,” Lenzi says. It’s not just philanthropists who love Lenzi. Interior designers and real estate visionaries love her art because it is serene, balanced, and emotional. “People like neutrals, but they want something that speaks to them,” the artist explains. This summer, while school is out and the social swirl slows, Yvette will spend time at her family cabin by the lake. This is a place that always inspires., even when a storm blows in with wind and waves. “I love the contrasts of nature, the beauty, and the turbulence of the wild. One of my recent series of works is called Sand and Storm. I believe it captures the essence of both,” says Lenzi. It is such a gift to have extraordinary galleries in our midst. It is wildly exciting that artists walk among us and support the causes we love. Yvette Lenzi is among the best of them. “Stay true to your heart and you’ll make the world around you better every day,” she says. yvettelenziart.com, @yvettelenzi

ANTHONY CHIARITO ANTHONY CHIARITO & ASSOCIATES INC.

Anthony Chiarito, an independent agency owner with American Family Insurance, was quickly introduced to the importance of life insurance early on in his career. “I had the opportunity to sell a life insurance policy to a friend of mine who is also a Chicago Police Officer. I was diligent in getting my friend to complete all the requirements in order to issue the life policy,” explains Chiarito, who has been in the industry for 15 years, earning designations as a Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) and a Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist (CLCS). “Unfortunately, my friend was killed a day after the policy requirements were met. It was certainly a tragedy. However, my friend’s son is better off due to the life insurance policy. Had I not done my job correctly, the tragedy would have still occurred but without the financial safety net of the life insurance policy.” This experience has been a driving factor in Chiarito’s career to provide actionable and understandable solutions for his clients in all areas of insurance. Chiarito, who earned the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) level of production for life insurance production in 2021—an industry recognized standard of performance, representing the top 10 percent of life insurance professionals, along with his team, provides solutions for homeowners, small businesses, and landlords. “Combined, our team has more than 50 years of experience, which is exemplified by our ability to easily and accurately determine risks and provide tailored solutions to mitigate those risks.” For more information, visit agent.amfam.com/ Anthony-chiarito.

THE BOSS BANK

BMO Private Bank in Hinsdale focuses on helping the business owner manage the ups and downs of the financial markets by providing strategic advice on their business and overall Wealth Management needs. WORDS BY MITCH HURST

F

or decades, BMO Harris Bank has helped business owners in the Chicagoland area navigate market swings with an eye towards implementing strategies aimed to benefit their personal finances. This was especially true through the “Great Recession” of 2008-2009, and more recently, with the market volatility caused by the aftereffects of the pandemic on general business conditions. It is during these times that business owners need a Wealth Advisor who can provide the right strategic advice tailored to the business owner’s individual situation. “I would tell you during ’08 and ’09, the last recession, there were a lot of business owners who made it through that slog and survived that economic trauma,” says Kamiar Vossoughi, Senior Managing Director for BMO Private Bank in Hinsdale. “Those business owners built their businesses back. Then, when the pandemic hit, a lot of challenges popped up and we are still working our way through those stresses. The businesses that have survived, even thrived in these times, are super attractive to financial and strategic buyers.” Vossoughi ads that “there is a lot of cash on the sidelines” and there is a general feeling that if people are thinking about selling their business, this may be the time. The amount of wealth that’s going to be transferred in the next 20 years will be enormous as baby boomers begin transitioning their wealth—either through an outright sale or to the next generation. “I think this volume of business sales is a byproduct of the battle-tested owner trying to capitalize on some of the current economic conditions—relatively low interest rates, a generally healthy economy and a lot of liquidity in Private Equity looking to deploy their capital,” Vossoughi says. Much of BMO’s value proposition for business owners is fo-

cused on planning strategies. The company works with clients who have over $1 million of liquidity or clients with significant illiquid assets looking to monetize positions or effectively transfer them to the next generation and to charitable organizations. “We really focus on business owners, and over the last few years we created a team—the acronym is BOSS—which stands for business owner strategies and solutions,” Vossoughi says. “We’re trying to help our business owner clientele analyze and review their options for their business and help them optimally plan for the future.” Vossoughi says interest from strategic buyers and financial buyers has increased the volume and pace of sales over the past 2½ years. “Some of the business owners just outright decided this was the right time to sell the business, and so we’re trying to help them understand the proper planning strategies to make sure that when they receive the proceeds it’s structured the right way,” he says. “Our discovery process helps them understand the minimum value they need to obtain for their business in order to live the lifestyle that they want to going forward.” Vossoughi was raised in Hinsdale, and he says connections to the community among him and the BMO staff are important to fostering relationships with clients in the area. Most of the employees in the Hinsdale office live close by and some have ties to the legacy Harris Bank, which BMO acquired in the 1980s. The bank has been a pillar of the Hinsdale community for many decades. Its wealth management team was created in the mid-90s and was the first suburban location for BMO. It’s also the largest single market for BMO in the United States in terms of assets under management with approximately $4 billion handled by the local team. “Being in the suburbs, we do feel like we’re part of the community. A lot of us live in town, or adjacent towns, so there’s an investment in terms of local involvement,” Vossoughi says. “Some of our tenured clients are parents of my friends that I grew up with, some are our neighbors and others that have been great supporters of us on a personal basis. That connectivity helps make these client relationships very special.” BMO Harris Bank is located at 120 W. Hinsdale Ave. in Hinsdale, 630-920-6880, bmoharris.com.

DINNER DATE

ou can literally smell it, sweet as Juicy Fruit, wafting its way toward you from a block away. Long before you ever swing open the front doors to Kindred in downtown Elmhurst and grab a cushy seat near its huge open-hearth kitchen, that deliciously sweet scent will guide you to where you need to go. Smells like sugared firewood—more nuanced than the fires dear old dad used to get cracklin’ when you were younger. This is the aroma, one imagines, that an expensive Pinot Noir would release if someone had the temerity to pour it straight into a smoldering campfire. It smells like summer. And really good open-flame cooking because, of course, that’s exactly what it is. Those inviting aromas are the product of chef Michael Carroll, formerly of Band of Bohemia, burning cords of cherry wood, hour after fragrant hour, in the restaurant’s Argentinian-style grill. The fire burns. Flames spit. Heat crackles. Searing, warming, and crisping up all manner of delicacies pulled from field and stream alike. Every time Carroll twirls one of the grill’s signature wheelshaped controls, a grate either descends closer to the fire or elevates away from it, delivering different gradations of intense or gentle heat. Pretty much everything that requires heat is cooked on that sweet, sweet grill. Seared strip steaks with charred ripini. Tender slices of juicy duck dressed with pears and pistachios. Planks of

Campfire accompaniments

plump salmon enveloped in contrails of fruity smoke. And medleys of vegetables—gardens and gardens of them—that might include beets topped with candied walnuts one day or slow-roasted carrots crowned with a sweet-potato pie crumble the next. Owner Tom Trenta is, deservedly, proud of his grill. He had its surrounding hearth built, brick by brick, all while he oversaw the construction of a special airflow system that releases all that bing cherry-scented smoke into the surrounding area rather than backdraft it inside. Trenta, who learned about the food game by running creative agencies that often represented restaurants, doesn’t brag about his new toy the way some folks prattle on about their shiny new “midlife crisis” Ferrari.

DINNER DATE

Slagel Farms strip steak

For Trenta—a Midwesterner through and through—that oven is a means to a greater end. “I just feel like food tastes better over an open fire,” says Trenta. “And I liked the idea of a restaurant that could bring people around a fire all year long.” Which is, of course, what makes Kindred such a find. Carroll and Trenta are not trying to import California-style campfire cooking to Elmhurst. Nor are they trying ape Francis Mallman’s distinctly Argentinean take open-fire barbecuing. Kindred’s menu, by contrast, celebrates Midwest flavors and Midwest ingredients, while challenging diners, ever so gently, to wonder what “glampinginspired” fare might taste like if served in an elegant dining room close to home. What if, for example, one took a hanger steak, seared it carefully, and then paired it with an unconventional array of summer fruits. Watermelons. Cucumbers. Honeydew. All cut diaphanously thin. The result, at Kindred, is a study in contrasts. Bold umami-like steak notes counterbalanced by wispy ribbons of fruit that dissolve like cotton candy on the tongue. It’s a picnic basket fare cross-bred with a backyard grill-fest. And what if, given this emphasis on hypotheticals, one sourced

walleye plucked from the Great Lakes but refused to give it the Wisconsin supper club treatment? Imagine that walleye kept cold and raw, then bundled up with a pickled pears, tamari-dressed watermelon, and crispy bits of quinoa and hazelnuts. The result: a delicious example of Great Lakes-style sushi or Midwestern poké that’s bracingly bright yet subtly briny. There’s plenty more to sample, of course—offerings Trenta hopes will make people whisper one of his favorite phrases: “elegantly casual.” When you flick your fork into his ultra-tender trout topped with greens, pancetta and a gribiche-like jumble called eggs mimosa, Trenta hopes you will see the dish for what it was intended to be: Not avant-garde city fare, but creative suburban fare with a Midwestern soul. Food that’s just interesting enough to make diners think, “I’d certainly never be able to make that at home.” Kindred, in other words, is a tribute to our home—one from the heart that honors the bounty of our American Heartland. Kindred is located at 119 N. York Street in Elmhurst. Visit https:// kindreddining.com/ or call 630-517-4393

DINNER DATE

Spicy Orange Margarita:

This smart take on a margarita doesn’t overdue the heat. It might look like a liquefied habanero, but the smooth undercurrent of citrus makes it a great premeal palate-charger.

The Tease:

Imagine a spiked Arnold Palmer with a decidedly British lilt. You’ll detect a strong mid-day teatime vibe but just the right blend of lemon and bourbon makes it a sophisticated drink that pairs well with beef and steaks.

AMICABLE —TO BE OR NOT TO BE Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer explains why an amicable resolution to divorce is best for everyone. WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER/PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN OF FIG MEDIA/STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA/HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST

ivorce is extremely expensive. The “expense” extends well beyond the cost of attorney fees. It is expensive emotionally, robs the parties of time and energy, and usually affects each member of the family. Approaching a divorce with the intention of resolving it amicably is best for everyone involved. Some lawyers claim that by fighting, the client will receive a better result. It is just not the case. The outcome of a hugely contested divorce versus a divorce resolved by agreement rarely deviates more than 5 percent. The biggest difference is the amount of fees. A medium-size divorce resolved by agreement costs 10 times less than a medium-sized divorce that goes to trial. In addition, an amicable divorce takes substantially less time, creates less stress, and allows the parties to move forward with less bitterness and resentment. This is always good but especially important when children are involved. Given these facts, the question remains: why doesn’t everyone choose an amicable divorce? Some people are so angry that they don’t make good choices. Other people have attorneys suggesting that litigation will provide them with a much better outcome. The client may have someone advising him/her who elevates the drama, distrust, and chaos rather than reducing it. Still, others want an amicable divorce but their soon-to-be ex-spouse refuses to be cordial.

It’s important to find an attorney who can help you choose the right path. Select someone who will give you good counsel and keep things in perspective instead of heightening the conflict. Some attorneys handle only uncontested divorces. Other attorneys are aggressive, skilled trial attorneys. It is rare to find an attorney who will proceed amicably but has the necessary litigation skills in case it goes to trial. The search is worth it: proceeding amicably is much easier when the other side knows that if required, your attorney will go to court and achieve a fair outcome. A powerful attorney actually assists in an agreeable divorce by knowing the law, knowing what a reasonable outcome would be if they had to go to trial, and being able to negotiate a similar outcome without the expense of litigation. Divorce doesn’t have to be adversarial; you can make decisions to help avoid unnecessary drama, acrimony, and attorney fees. When interviewing a potential attorney, it’s important to ask questions that help you to determine if the attorney is both a skilled litigator and is willing to help you achieve an amicable resolution. Michone J. Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

A Glowing Report: Dr. Jordan Carqueville proves beauty is more than skin deep in the office and at the Art of Skin Gala. WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD

kin aging. On the one hand, it is unavoidable. On the other hand, is it? As much as we’d love to wave a magic wand and make those wrinkles, sags and skin damage disappear, unfortunately it doesn’t quite work that way. But with a few sensible preventive measures and the care and expertise of a highly regarded, triple board certified and experienced medical professional like dermatologist Dr. Jordan Carqueville, your skin can remain glowing and gorgeous as you age. Dr. Carqueville is a leading dermatologist who specializes in skin cancer treatment, cosmetic treatments, facial rejuvenation, and aesthetics. From consulting with patients on the best ways to keep skin glowing and feeling healthy, to performing advanced surgical techniques for cancer removal, Dr. Carqueville works with her patients to determine the best methods of treatments to achieve safe and successful results. When you step into the offices of the Derm Institute of Chicago, founded by Dr. Carqueville in 2019, every appointment begins with a conversation. “If someone wants to talk about

anti-aging, that is a multi-tissue issue. That means that we look at an individual globally and I assess how they are aging as an individual.” Dr. Carqueville stresses that there is no cookie cutter approach. “All people age differently. Even twins age differently, depending on their environment and a host of other factors. Each patient gets a tailored plan based on their needs and issues.” For example, she says that fillers or fat transfer would be appropriate for someone who’s a “hollower” and who would need volume. Whereas someone who has a lot of chronic sun damage or who has lots of precancerous lesions or lots of age spots will require laser. “I do a ton of resurfacing work, which really helps to stimulate collagen and brightens the skin.” “Patients are coming to us because we have a true understanding of anatomy and the aging of the face,” she says. “Our philosophy is based on having excellent patient care and each individual on our team is extremely qualified.” In addition to Dr. Carqueville, the other doctors in the practice include Dr. Stephanie Bayers, Dr. Pamela Scheinman, Elizabeth Russeau,

Profile family nurse practitioner and Eve Persak, a registered nutritionist. As the president of the Chicago Dermatological Society, Dr. Carqueville created The Art of Skin Gala held at Revel Motor Row in June. “We are a society of 400 dermatologists. And we’re basically saying, all skin is beautiful. We have proceeds going toward the education of children and underserved communities of Chicago, including Horizons for Youth and High Jump.” Dr. Carqueville has also started a dermatology mentorship program for under-represented medical students. “Dermatology is one of the least diverse of all medical specialties. As the president of the Chicago Dermatological Society this year, my mission has been to create this event embedding higher purpose and having the celebration of inclusivity coming from experts of skin, who know that all skin is equal under the microscope.” Dr. Carqueville offers a few quick tips everyone should follow: • Wear sunscreen of SPF 30 and above • Do not smoke • Cleanser. Active Ingredient. Moisturizer. Sunscreen. In that order. Every day. • Eat a balanced and healthy diet. • Select a provider who knows the differences between the many fillers out there and their ideal placement to achieve a more subtle and natural look. • Have your skin examined by a board-certified dermatologist on an annual basis. With offices conveniently located on Michigan Avenue, Hinsdale and Old Orchard, a simple call to the Derm Institute of Chicago is an obvious first step to healthy, beautiful skin. dermic.com, 312-319-1978, @derminstitutechicago

SOMETHING EXTRA Shelly Perkowski uses her knowledge as an investor and home builder to advise her clients and help them make strategic decisions about buying or selling their homes. WORDS BY MITCH HURST

helly Perkowski was always by her dad’s side when she was growing up. A builder, Tom Santefort was a real estate investor and luxury homebuilder who built homes in an around the Western Suburbs. She spent a lot of time with him on the road. “We were always in the car and in one day we would go to his apartments, mobile home parks and usually a new construction job site as well. That was my childhood, lots of real estate and I loved it!” When Perkowski graduated college, at her dad’s urging, she went to work for the family business and earned her real estate license. She would go to construction sites to work with vendors, helping choose tiles and cabinetry and other interiors for the homes. “I liked watching the designs from start to finish. I was fascinated with the building process,” she says. “Eventually, I just felt that I would be better listing and selling his homes, so I started repping all of his projects, including big estate projects, which I loved.” In the mid-2000s the big city beckoned, and Perkowski moved to Chicago and joined Coldwell Banker as real estate broker. When the recession of 2008 hit, she formed a real estate investment group with her husband, buying and rehabbing distressed properties for resale. But after having children, she headed back to the Western Suburbs with her family. She’s now a Hinsdalebased broker with @properties. “Although I still love the city and have a great business and network there, I know this community like the back of my hand,” she says. “This is where I grew up and first started selling homes, so it feels great to be back in the ‘burbs and raising my family here.” She adds, “I feel I have a great grasp on what the Hinsdale homeowner is looking for in Chicago and what the Chicago homeowner wants in Hinsdale. So with networks in both locations, I transition these clients accordingly.” Perkowski’s background as an investor and in the home construction world gives her a distinct advantage when it comes

to advising clients. She knows what improvements will increase a home’s value, and she understands the timing of the market, which can sometimes be tricky. “Sometimes moving isn’t the best option and depending on a client’s needs and budget a kitchen or bathroom renovation could make more sense. I am happy to help my clients consider all their options.” Perkowski says. “Having the relationships that I have with contractors and builders and the knowledge I can give to buyers and sellers is very, very helpful in every transaction I am involved in.” Community is important to Perkowski and she stays involved by sponsoring community charity events. With three kids of her own, she’s especially supportive of charities and events that support the needs of children. “I absolutely love connecting people and I love giving back to our community, I just believe that if there’s any way I can help others, that’s what I want to do,” she says. Planning for a Successful School Year “How do I make sure my student starts the new school year off right?” WORDS BY MATTHEW PIETRAFETTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

Matthew Pietrafetta

F

or over 20 years, this has been a key question asked by parents preparing their students for academic success. While each student requires a personalized plan, we have some general advice on a strong start to the new school year.

To start off strong, keep 3 things in mind: • Avoid surprises. Scan the school calendar for critical testing events. Students must be focused and prepared. • Make a strong first impression. Strong starts lead to successful ends. • Get feedback. Seek teacher feedback early and often; learn from it; adjust; succeed. Academic Approach works with families to help them meet these goals and many more by creating a customized learning plan for your student and coaching them to achieve great outcomes both on standardized tests and in the classroom. Plan for High Stakes Tests Sometimes high stakes tests or grading periods sneak up on us. They’re in public calendars but are often easy to miss: • Seniors still have 2 official test dates for ACT & SAT retesting before early decision deadlines for college applications. But registration deadlines are 4-5 weeks prior to the official test. • The 11th grade October PSAT is the one chance to qualify students as Commended Scholars or National Merit Semifinalists. A feather in the cap, if earned. • 7th or 8th grade MAP test performance can determine the math level a student will track on into high school. • Critical time periods at the end of the semester often provide windows for students to submit test corrections or extra credit assignments. Carefully review school calendars, ask questions, and help your students understand what’s coming next. Proper preparation before high stakes tests makes a significant difference in performance. First Impressions 25 years ago, while teaching in the Core Curriculum at Columbia University in New York City, I learned a lasting lesson about successful students: the ones who start strong finish well. I taught a mandatory freshman writing course, requiring 19 essays in one term. It was a lot to manage, and the students who

impressed me most were those who from the outset came regularly to my office hours, sought feedback, applied that feedback, and handed in improved essays. They showed they cared; they applied my guidance; and they established a rapport with me, their teacher. It was a simple formula, but I’ve seen how challenging it can be for students to apply it. Many students are still developing self-advocacy skills and feel awkward engaging teachers. However, students can be coached to take this approach: Attend the first office hours a teacher offers. Ask two simple questions: • What makes a student most successful in your class? • How should I prepare for the important tests and assignments this term? Teachers want students to succeed. When they are engaged as allies, they offer help, clarity, and guidance. Feedback Leads to Improvement Feedback is hard. We know that as adults; it’s even harder for our children. However, effective feedback always leads to improvement. Students need to learn to not only accept feedback but also seek it out. Parents too. If progress is off track, you want to learn that as quickly as possible. Students should take their first quiz or test results seriously, read teacher’s notes and feedback, and respond by making changes. Parents should look for these signs: the student’s impression of teachers; the first grades or quizzes back; and, most certainly, the first parent-teacher conference to understand how the student is progressing. Strong Starts & Successful Finishes At Academic Approach, we recognize that strong starts lead to successful finishes. Therefore, we provide complimentary consultations to help families think through priorities, assess learning needs, and tailor a tutoring plan and timeline for each student’s ultimate success. Contact us now. We will help you navigate the road ahead, plan for success, and guide your student through a program of learning that drives improved test scores, academic outcomes, and college readiness.
