On the heels of our anniversary issue, we did just that during an evening cocktail party at Neiman Marcus Oakbrook. You can see some of the photos from the evening in our Living & Giving section this month. Our features this month include former Hinsdale resident Karen Ballou and her clean skin care and beauty line—Immunocolgie. The beautiful artwork by Clarendon Hills’ Diane Crites fills the pages of our cover story. As a young girl Crites dreamed of being an artist, and she’s finally made her dream a reality, all while helping local charity partner, Simply From The Heart. You may have noticed a new boutique in town this June—Meredith Jaye. After successfully opening businesses in Glen Ellyn and Naperville, Kim Fuller decided to bring her boutique filled with unique luxury goodies to downtown Hinsdale. Fuller shares some of her favorites in Country Vs. Town. Our Giving Back story this month features some of the fantastic community members who helped to make the Hinsdale Historical Society’s Kitchen Walk: Outdoor Edition,

a grand success. Although a new spin on the classic fundraiser, the group was über successful. Our monthly Esquire section highlights Schiller DuCanto & Fleck attorney Gregory Maksimuk. Maksimuk, who is celebrating 10 years with the firm, centers his practice on giving his clients a sense of control during the stressful events that come along with a divorce. We have Dr. Diane Yamada, the Chief of Gynecologic Oncology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UChicago Medicine, in our Women’s Health section this month. Dr. Yamada is helping to advance the medical center’s clinical trials and research in her field, resulting in hope for women worldwide. regory Maksimuk unexpectedly fell in love with family law right out of law school, realizing that this field of the law was where he could really pursue his passion: helping people. When he meets his clients, Maksimuk concedes that they’re usually in one of the most difficult and trying times in their lives. He loves being able to bring comfort to his clients in situations that are akin to dealing with the loss of a loved one coupled with a sense of control in typically uncontrollable situations. “I try to be as invested in a case as my clients are,” says Maksimuk. As a family law attorney, Maksimuk wears many hats. He acts as an advocate as a trial lawyer, peacemaker in negotiations, strategist throughout the various facets of mediation and litigation, and constant guide to his clients so that they are always aware of what options are available to them. “I don’t take a cookie-cutter approach with my clients,” says Maksimuk. Maksimuk is a master of strategy, stressing that strategy and deliberation have been the key to his success and his clients’ happiness. Every one of his cases are custom-tailored specifically to his clients’ goals and needs. By having a clear strategy and plan for each of his clients, as each case progresses, Maksimuk further defines and fine-tunes the strategy, always making sure that he’s doing what’s best to protect the things most important to his clients. “A lot of attorneys are more reactionary, and I like to plan ahead,” says Maksimuk. At the outset of each case, Maksimuk makes sure he understands his client’s goals. In a fact-intensive branch of law, Maksimuk emphasizes how important it is to have client goals defined as early as possible, that way he can be sure that every step he’s taking gets him closer to those goals. One of Maksimuk’s biggest strengths is that he is in constant

communication with his clients, always making sure they know where their case stands. “I believe clients should know everything,” Maksimuk says, stressing that clients need all the information so that they can make informed decisions and help guide their next steps in the process. Keeping clients informed has become increasingly important over the last year, with mounting court delays and the division of parenting time often being affected by the global pandemic. Maksimuk specializes in highly contentious cases with highnet-worth individuals, typically dealing with complicated issues ranging from defining parenting time, protecting business/trust assets, to dividing generational wealth and trust assets. In such high-stakes cases, Maksimuk emphasizes that being as open and upfront as possible is essential to a successful outcome. “Sometimes you have bad facts, it’s better to just own them and figure out a way to make it work to your advantage the best you can,” says Maksimuk, noting that sooner or later, they’ll come out. And even when the facts are not as ideal as they could be, Maksimuk is able to bring the comfort of control back to his clients’ lives through his deliberate strategizing and high level of client service—always putting his clients and their goals at the forefront of each case. Entrepreneur , with her husband Cullen, opened shop—M and Em’s—in August 2000 in downtown Wheaton before expanding her sophisticated children’s boutique into downtown Glen Ellyn five years later. Since the doors to her first store opened, she has expanded her portfolio to include Meredith Jaye—a unique boutique featuring a curated selection of women’s clothing, accessories, and home décor—in both Glen Ellyn, and more recently downtown Hinsdale. “Having seen the growth of our women’s clientele, we started looking for the next perfect location and Hinsdale was an easy decision,” says Fuller. The couple, who met at the University of Iowa, have two daughters—Mackenzie and Emmerson. n 2020, the Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board was ready to host its 15th annual Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk when the global pandemic threw in an unwanted spice into the recipe. Putting the much-anticipated event on the backburner, as everyone was forced to spend their lives quarantined, in 2021, the women’s board chose to add two different types of servings to the menu. First, an updated, seasonal appropriate take on a classic and the second was a whole new dish—the Outdoor Edition. The Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk became a luncheon this year due to the unforeseen circumstances the pandemic has brought along with it; this year adding a virtual component. This new take on a classic event was held on Mother’s Day weekend where ambassadors hosted mini parties with pre-prepared meals, sponsored by Vistro Prime. Ticket holders were also able to attend virtually through Facebook and Instagram from their own homes. Here, attendees admired table settings, interior designs, as well as viewed the raffle drawing filled with luxe goodies—all in real time. The group added a second course to its fundraising menu this year—the Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk: Outdoor Edition. This new addition was enjoyed on June 25, where instead of touring the interiors of homeowners’ kitchens like in years past, the Outdoor Edition took to homeowners’ patios and gardens. “We all grew to truly appreciate what the great outdoors has to offer after being confined to our homes during the pandemic year of 2020,” says Walker Rediehs, co-chair of the Women’s Board’s Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk: Outdoor Edition. “Many homeowners considered their backyards and gardens to be extensions of their living space.” With that in mind, the Women’s Board felt it was appropriate to showcase the homeowners’ outdoor living spaces—believing ticket holders were not yet ready to mingle indoors and homeowners not ready to open their figurative menus to the 1,000-plus guests with COVID-19 etiquette in limbo.

The group’s new outdoor editions proved to be a recipe for success, greatly in part to the overwhelming community support. “It takes a village and this event proves that,” says Rediehs. “We had gracious homeowners who offered up their spaces for a day of showcasing, and the village and beyond, came out in droves to see them.” Rediehs adds the Hinsdale Women’s Board wouldn’t be able to have had this event without the sponsors, advertisers, and donors, many of them being Hinsdale residents or local business owners themselves. “Preparation is typically a year-long process involving a large team of individuals,” says Ruta Brigden, co-chair of Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk: Outdoor Edition. “This year, we had a bit less time to plan.” But everyone involved came through tenfold. Local restaurants including Altamura, Fuller House, Il Mio, and Nabuki provided appetizers and libations, and local interior designers and shops including Alioto’s and Kate Marnell Interiors, created sumptuous tablescapes. Even local florists and landscapers, like Petal Pushers Florists, Vagabond, and Vern Goers Greenhouse, completed the final touches on the table settings, patios, and gardens. “Local businesses donated their time, services, and products to

make people feel like they were attending a different event at each home,” says Brigden. And the gathering of community volunteers didn’t stop there. Not only did these local businesses come together to make the event possible in short order, but several committee chairs, house captains, and docents committed their talents from ushering people through the featured homes and educating guests on the outdoor areas, to those overseeing the catering, setup, and décor. “At the end of the day, we had about 100 volunteers to thank. Everyone brings different strengths to the table, and it is great to see how a team of people can pull together and make an event like this happen each year,” she says. Then of course, there are the homeowners who were gracious enough to open their outdoor spaces to the public for viewing. This year, there were seven properties that represented a variety of styles. “Some of the homes had tranquil pools and outdoor garden areas, some focused on lively entertaining, and one was a horse farm!” says Brigden. Other outdoor spaces included a bohemian-style oasis, an Italian loggia, and a Great Gatsby, Art-Deco inspired setting. With each property’s uniqueness, the goal was that there was something

for everyone to enjoy. “We hoped that attendees would leave feeling inspired and appreciate the differences each outdoor space brought,” Brigden says. Keeping guests’ safety in mind, there were two tours on the day of the event. There was a VIP Trolly available, which had a limited capacity of 200 guests, where passengers enjoyed pre-tour drinks and hors d’oeuvres at either Fuller House or Marcus, before being shuttled to each home. For Liz Oliverio, co-chair of Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk: Outdoor Edition, the gathering of friends from the community was the most enjoyable. “Who doesn’t love a good home-and-outdoor-spaces tour filled with light bites, refreshments, and friends,” she says of the event which benefits the Hinsdale Historical Society’s efforts to preserve Hinsdale’s history, heritage, and artifacts. “The Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk event in previous years, was the largest annual fundraising event hosted by the Hinsdale Historical Society, and we wanted this new Outdoor Edition to prove to be even better,” she adds. When patients find their way to University of Chicago Medicine, they are coming to us for our expertise,” says Dr. Diane Yamada, UChicago Medicine’s Joseph Bolivar DeLee Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Section of Gynecologic Oncology. “But what they don’t expect is the level of care we will give to them as a whole person. That’s what we strive for every day.” A gynecologic cancer diagnosis can be physically and emotionally challenging but, at the UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, a patient never has to battle cancer alone. The medical center’s multidisciplinary team is whole-heartedly committed to providing leading-edge, optimal care for patients with ovarian, uterine, cervical, endometrial, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. “Our depth of experience and breadth in this area is top tier in the Midwest,” Dr. Yamada adds. “We have doctors and researchers who have been doing this for more than 20 years complemented by newly recruited faculty who bring knowledge of the latest surgical and treatment approaches to our program. We also have the largest array of clinical trials—Phases 1, 2, and 3—available to patients with gynecologic cancers.” But it’s UChicago Medicine’s patient-centered approach using the latest methods of detecting and treating gynecologic cancer in a safe, welcoming environment that differentiates it in the market. In an effort to give access to care to all, UChicago Medicine has centers in New Lenox, Orland Park, Hyde Park, downtown Chicago’s River East neighborhood, and Schererville in northwest Indiana. “It’s been very important for us as a medical group to get out into the community and meet our patients where they are,” she adds. “Dealing with a complex cancer diagnosis is hard enough without having to worry about the logistics of seeing your doctor and coordinating treatment at a faraway place.” Every patient receives a personalized treatment plan when they begin care with UChicago Medicine. “All of our decision making starts with good review of pathology and expert review of radiology imaging,” Dr. Yamada explains.

“When a patient begins treatment, they know exactly who is managing what, what the timeline will be and what to expect. I talk a lot about our doctors, but our healthcare team is extraordinary—the PAs (physician assistants), nurses, care coordinators—it takes all of us to create a successful outcome. We are in constant communication with each other and with a patient’s individual physicians to ensure this happens.” When asked if the pandemic slowed UChicago’s strides in women’s health, Dr. Yamada suggested it actually, in some ways, enhanced how their teams deliver treatment. “COVID-19 forced everyone in medicine to pause and rethink how we were delivering treatment,” she says. “At the top of our priority list was keeping our patients safe. We had to change some of our protocols, use telemedicine in a way we hadn’t before, and be intentional in how we got our patients the medicine they needed. But we did it, and I’m incredibly proud and impressed at how we were able to pivot and still keep our patients at the center of everything we do.” Dr. Yamada was recently elected as the 53rd President of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, a pinnacle appointment for those in her field. This role blends her passions for moving forward optimal patient care and in-depth research. “It’s very exciting to be able to tackle some of the big issues facing medicine today—how we educate, how we effectively raise research dollars, how we address the disparity in care and reach the underserved,” she says. “We have an incredibly special group of patients with very unique needs. I feel very lucky to be a part of a team who is dedicated to finding answers and creating hope.” Dr. S. Diane Crites of Clarendon Hills did not follow a linear path on her way to becoming an artist. And yet, the mother of two has arrived at her destination—inspired and ready to live the dream she had been deferring almost all her life.

iane Crites was a young girl living in Detroit, or maybe it was Florida, when she first realized that she saw the world a little differently from others. An alley vignette could be a black-and-white photo. A field of flowers could be an abstract painting or an expressionist drawing in charcoal. Everything, everywhere she went, had potential to be a work of art. And yet Crites, who took art classes as she moved around from state to state, coast to coast, with her family (ultimately landing in Dublin, Ohio) before pursuing an undergraduate degree at Miami University in Ohio was as practical as she was creative. “I enrolled as a fine arts major. Then two weeks after, thought maybe I should learn the business side of being a creative, so I changed my major to marketing,” explains Crites, who now lives in Clarendon Hills with husband, Eric Crites, and children Emma, 7, and Jackson, 4. “On the side I took as many painting classes as possible, which included a semester studying painting and drawing in Florence at the Lorenzo Di Medici Art Institute. I graduated just short of a double major.” From there, she went straight to New York City with two goals—to find a job with a salary she could live on, and to continue pursuing

her passion for art. Crites quickly found an entry level gig in advertising sales but spent her spare time volunteering at art galleries. It helped feed her soul while the job fed her need to build a career. “About a year and a half later, I went up to Boston to a sales training program for Dell EMC that I interned with when I was in college,” says Crites. “It was a really good experience but another example of me putting my art on the side.” It was also where she met husband, Eric, who she moved with to Chicago about 12 years ago. They were married soon after and living in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood, where she took classes at the Palette & Chisel Art Academy. “I took drop-in classes where you can do painting and drawing with live models and I was one of the youngest ones there,” she explains. “These other people had been painting at the academy for 30 years, but it was still something I did in my spare time while I was working in the corporate world.” Crites finally stepped off the corporate ladder when baby Emma was born. The couple still lived in the city—moving first to

Lakeview and then to Lincoln Square before deciding to move to Clarendon Hills two years ago—but she turned her attention to raising their young family. “It all worked out in the end because I did that job until I had Emma,” she says, explaining that the move was timed with Emma’s start of kindergarten. “And now they’re at an age when I can have some more time to do the things that are for me, so I’ve been spending more time on my art and that’s my therapy—especially in the last year.” Crites says if we learned one thing throughout this pandemic is that life is short. So, if there was ever a time to start fully living the dream she had been deferring since childhood, this was it. “After the year we’ve had, I realize how important it is to give my talent the time it deserves and take it more seriously. It was always like a hobby I did on the side,” she explains. “I don’t regret going into sales and I don’t regret going into marketing, but I’ve never felt more like my true self.” Those who have been lucky enough to partner with Crites on

her art projects over the last two years are grateful to be the beneficiaries of this metamorphosis. One of Crites’ favorite endeavors on the philanthropy side has been working with Jackelyn Kastanis, founder of the Hinsdale-based Simply from the Heart—a nonprofit that works to promote healing and recovery, enrich lives, and empower hospital patients through beauty and pampering services. “This past year, I wanted to focus on giving back so I worked with Jackelyn on a collaboration with two of my drawings,” explains Crites. “We did a limited exclusive print for her charity with 100 percent of the proceeds going back to her mission of making sure that everyone who’s in the hospital undergoing treatment is treated to some glam makeup and hair services. It’s all about giving everyone a sense of confidence and these figure drawings are representative of that.” Crites’ pieces can also be found exclusively at Anecdote in La Grange, one of several local business owners she has been working with. “Right now, they have some of my black and white inks,” she says. “They are more expressive. I’ve been classically trained in art, but I wanted

to let myself go and have more intention in my marks. These inks are a product of me letting go and becoming more loose in my art.” Meanwhile, Hinsdale interior designer Courtney Casey and others in real estate and architecture have been purchasing Crites’ larger works. “As I was exploring my intention in painting and drawing and

experimenting with my medium and what I was going to say in my art, they were interested in purchasing some of the pieces I’ve made during that exploration, Crites explains. “Another project I did recently was with Moda Eye Care in Clarendon Hills. Dr. McCarthy has a vision and appreciates arts in all the frame selections that she has so she reached out to me to work on creating art to go on that cloth you use to clean your glasses.” Crites says she is grateful to be living with her family in a community she loves while also becoming the person she was always meant to be. “I’ve always known that this is a part of me, but I’ve never given it credit—even to the point where I was just recently, someone asked me why I don’t want to sign my paintings,” she says. “I think subconsciously I wasn’t allowing myself to be called an artist.” As for her adjustment to life in Clarendon Hills, Crites says she may be here to stay. “Everyone jokes that I’m Clarendon Hills’ No. 1 fan,” she laughs. “I feel like my heels are dug in here. I moved around so much when I was little, so I really find the idea of living in one place very attractive—especially for the kids. Although, I do feel like moving around the country taught me a lot and I’m thankful for it.” With her art now hanging in the homes of many of her neighbors and new projects on the horizon, Crites is shifting to a phase of her life and career she once only dreamed of. “People tell me that having my paintings in their home makes them happy,” she adds. “It gives me great satisfaction to know that, in the last year, a lot of people were spending so much time in their homes and that these pieces gave them solace.” Crites—whose multifaceted pieces range from classical realism to abstraction—says she looks forward to spending more time in her home studio and taking on new commissions. “One of the biggest things I’m excited about is getting time, finally, to dive into my own work,” she adds. “The next six months to a year will be spent focusing on what my work is going to be about and finding my voice. I feel so grateful to have the studio space, which has also made me realize how important taking time for yourself is. During the pandemic I’d come up to the studio and have time for my thoughts, to meditate, drink wine … and it reminded me that we all have to take a little time for ourselves and self-care.” Although, as a mother of two young children, she’s rarely ever always alone. The studio also serves as a family art space—a rules-free zone where Emma and Jackson can follow in their mother’s (and grandmother’s) path and express themselves in color and ink. “I let my kids paint up in the studio as much as they want and let them use any type of medium they want,” she adds. “I just let them go and that’s been really helpful for me, too. They don’t have any preconceived notions of what they should be or should not be doing. It’s so inspiring to watch them be creative without worrying about anything.” It is, after all, the reason she worked so hard to get here. “The kids are going to be in school in the fall and I’m finally devoting my time to what I’ve always wanted to do,” she adds. “It feels like this is going to be my next chapter.” For more information about Crites’ work, follow her on Instagram at @dianecritesart.

s soon as you step off the plane, you know you’re on vacation. The salty air and sunshine are a giveaway. You’ve landed in Palm Beach, Florida. I traveled there recently with my family and every detail was as delightful as you can imagine. Upon arriving, we headed to the luxe Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in Manalapan. The Forbes Five-Star rating is no exageration at this resort. After checking in, we made our way to our room where we were delightfully greeted with a charcuterie board and a bottle of wine to kick off the stay. After flying from Chicago with a toddler, my husband and I were more than pleased to indulge. If you’ve ever traveled with your entire family then you know that the pool cannot wait for a 3-year-old, so of course we made our way to the resort pool to splash around and take in the Atlantic breezes—eventually heading to the private beachfront. This oceanfront resort prides itself on being a family-friendly location with all the luxury adults crave on vacation. Situated on a private beach, the breathtaking views always evoke a sense of relaxed luxury. If relaxation is on your agenda (isn’t this what a vacation is about?), let your children explore in the resort’s AquaNuts program, and head to the award-winning Eau Spa. With 42,000 square feet of treatment rooms, spas, and lounging areas, it’s sure to Creekstone Farm prime rib filet mignon dinner at Angle

delight. The spa, which is billed as a grown-up playground includes the Self-Centered Garden with dipping pools, hanging chairs, cabanas, and more. I indulged in a custom massage and was not disappointed. The specially curated scent created by my massage therapist was divine. Afterward, I sipped champagne from one of the hanging chairs next to the therapeutic water fountain in the Self-Centered Garden. It was the perfect wind-down after spending the day at the Palm Beach Zoo. While the spa was enchanting, I can’t help but rave over the Palm Beach Zoo, which was only a few miles away. The wildlife included many of the usual suspects, but also some species unique to the area, and was a magical experience with my little one. Iguanas roamed the park while we took in more than 190 species and ended the trip with a run around the splashpad. We covered the entire park and made it back in time for naptime. Palm Beach was quite the animal-filled adventure for our family. The next day we headed to Loggerhead Marinelife Center to see the sea turtles. As the only sea turtle between hospital Orlando and the Florida Keys, this center rehabilitates nearly 100 sea turtles and cares for thousands of hatchlings each year. Visiting the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a favorite among travelers to the Palm Beach area, and it certainly placed high on our list. Watching the adorable turtle recover in their viewing tanks while chatting with the volunteers was a unique experience our family won’t forget. Loggerhead Marinelife Center also happens to be the official charity partner of Eau Palm Beach, so the concierge at the hotel was happy to help us set up a visit. You may be wondering, what did they eat? Well, Palm Beach has no shortage of amazing dining experiences. One of our favorites was Angle, an elegant on-resort restaurant. It featured locally and regionally sourced ingredients and an award-winning wine selection. The culinary team serving us guided our choices for the evening and even customized my daughter’s gourmet macaroni H I N S D A L E L I V I N G 68

and cheese. I opted for the most tender short rib I have ever had. It was absolutely divine paired with our bottle of pinot noir. My husband chose the filet mignon and was delighted. We added foraged mushrooms and whipped potatoes to our meal which were full of flavor. After dinner I couldn’t help but try the Key Lime served in a unique seaside display. What would a trip to Palm Beach be without a visit to Worth Avenue? Just steps from the ocean, the shopping and dining district is a must. Luxury retailers line the streets, including Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Peter Millar, and Vilebrequin. If the bright, beach designs of Lilly Pulitzer (who started her juice stand and store in Palm Beach) is your taste, the store on Worth Avenue carries custom designs and can create your choice of print. And while there are plenty of dining choices on Worth Avenue, we opted for Pizza Al Fresco and were thrilled. After the long year that was 2020 (and early 2021), this beach escape was exactly what our family needed. Between the delicious dining, unique wildlife and private beach experiences, and sumptuous Eau Palm Beach accommodations, it was the ultimate place to bond and refresh before returning to Chicago. Afterall, Eau Palm Beach’s signature phrase—Pause. Play. Perfect.—perfectly embodies every aspect of our trip.

Supporters came together in support of people living with cancer at the annual Walk for Wellness House fundraiser in early May. This year’s event had the option to walk in various locations and times to allow social distancing. Participants chose to walk at Wellness House in Hinsdale, walk in the woods throughout the Forest Preserves in Cook and DuPage Counties, or walk at any location of their choosing, all while raising funds for the nonprofit. This year’s event raised more than $500,000. Since opening its doors, Wellness House has served more than 35,600 people affected by cancer through donations and fundraisers, providing programs at no charge to participants all year-long. wellnesshouse.org

MAINTAINING ACADEMIC PROGRESS This past year, Academic Approach expanded its tutoring services to help parents and students meet the educational challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. WORDS BY MITCH HURST/PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

ast year was tough on parents with school-aged children. It was tough on the students, too. In Illinois, the school shutdown in March 2020 presented unprecedented challenges, with both parents and students having to adapt to remote learning and find ways to keep up with coursework. Enter Academic Approach, a Chicago-based test preparation and academic tutoring company that prepares students for the next step in their academic progress. The company is celebrating its 20th year in 2021. “I moved to Chicago from New York in 2001 with two goals: first, to provide academically enriching test preparation that raised both students’ tests scores and their academic skills,” says Matthew Pietrafetta, Ph.D., Academic Approach’s Founder and CEO. “Second, to work with schools to provide creative programming and flexible access to students across a wide spectrum.” While the company has been helping families and schools steer through the academic enrichment, test preparation, and college entrance process for 20 years, the last year has been particularly challenging. “If we’ve been supporting families and schools through this journey since day one, well, this past year the journey intensified into Homer’s Odyssey, with families navigating the ‘Scylla’ of an uncertain admissions process and the ‘Charybdis’ of remote and hybrid school learning,” says Pietrafetta, who enjoys a literary allusion now and again. “Helping families navigate these new challenges offered new opportunities for us as a team and a business.” There was so much demand for information from parents and students that Pietrafetta started an email newsletter, which continues to reach thousands of families. Academic Approach’s relationships with school counselors and other partners helped it keep apprised of key intelligence and trends. “It was remarkable; people were so hungry for information.

Everyone was locked down; they were at home, and they were curious,” Pietrafetta says. “That side of our business over the past year has greatly developed. We’ve increased our ability to do research, find information, and answer questions in consultation with families during a time when they really needed it.” Losing a year or more of standardized testing, which can be used to track a student’s academic progress comparatively at a national level, will also pose challenges down the line. It will take a few years of testing to discern the impact. “We don’t know what we don’t know, and we won’t until we get a look at a full year’s data and trends,” Pietrafetta says. “Standardized tests tell us if we are on track compared to grade-level expectations. We won’t know how much the learning loss is until we get some of the reporting from future testing.” For now, Pietrafetta says the events of the past year have brought Academic Approach’s mission into sharp focus, and in its 20th year the company will continue to pivot to meet the needs of parents and students during unpredictable times. “Within the first week of the shutdown, we had immediate clarity about what our mission needed to be—helping students maintain academic progress,” says Pietrafetta. “Informational leadership, expert consulting, and academic, skill building, coaching, and mentoring—this was our focus and will remain our focus for the foreseeable future.” Hinsdale resident Heidi Novatney says her children have seen academic improvement and success through Academic Approach’s programs. “Our family has had a great experience working with Academic Approach,” she says. “They are professional and committed to helping their students reach their goals.” Academic Approach is located in Lincoln Park in Chicago, Winnetka, and Highland Park, 773-348-8914, academicapproach.com.
