PUBLISHER’S NOTE

I

love it when people talk about the magazines we publish— and for 20 years, I’ve focused my energy on telling other people’s stories with the publications I created under the umbrella of JWC Media. This month, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hinsdale Living, I was asked to share the behind-thescenes tale of how it came to be. My wife, Kim Conatser, recalls some of the details John and Kim Conatser with their better than I do but children at an Oak Brook Polo match. the thing I remember the most was our first impressions upon driving into Hinsdale for the first time. By then, I already had launched two magazines on the North Shore and was thinking about where the next logical market might be. Friends and colleagues had suggested that I take a trip west and that’s exactly what we did that fateful Saturday afternoon. Let’s just say it was love at first sight. I remember being immediately blown away by the business community. Not one storefront was vacant and nearly every parking space was filled. It was a beautiful early summer day with families out walking in the streets, kids playing in the park, and it looked so perfect, it almost didn’t seem real. Something about it reminded me of the seemingly utopian town of Redbud, Vermont, in one of my favorite Chevy Chase movies, Funny Farm. It was literally like a modern-day Norman Rockwell painting and I knew I had to do a magazine here. Fortunately, our vision for Hinsdale Living was immediately accepted and almost every single advertiser I met with signed up from day one. That overwhelming support was important for growing the business but so was the simultaneous outreach to do what JWC Media publications do best—help local charities and nonprofits tell their story through media sponsorships. We found some upand-coming charitable organizations that needed help getting started and as we moved into our premiere issue, the welcome we received was a sign that this magazine was meant to be. If I had to choose a favorite cover, it would be impossible. They’ve all been as unique and amazing as the people who call Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Burr Ridge, and Oak Brook home. However, I do have personal memories of a few, including actor D.B. Sweeney, who we featured on our January 2014 cover after he relocated his family from Los Angeles to Hinsdale. I met D.B. and his wife and was impressed with how warm and personable they were. In May 2019, we were lucky enough to get an interview with Jim Drury, the man who has been credited with stepping in to

save Oak Brook Polo Club in Oak Brook from extinction. Established in 1922, the iconic club was in danger of closing in 2015—nearly relegating the once world-renowned polo destination of the late 20th century to the history books. Drury stepped in and we were proud to share his story. It was especially exciting to see Hinsdale Living’s polo team out on these historic fields. More recently, we had none other than Rino Burdi gracing our January 2020 cover. Early last year, he opened a Hinsdale outpost of his family’s namesake luxury menswear brand and the rest is, as they say, history. It’s been a welcome addition to the luxury ambiance of our downtown— one that has been the site at least once for one of my favorite things, supporting local fundraising events. So, as I sit here and look back at the last 10 years, I dream of another decade and beyond—with hope, and gratitude. I’ve truly made more than my share of mistakes along the way, but have also been very fortunate in business, and many of our media partners are the loyalest of advertisers and have been with us since the beginning. That all said, I would be a fool to take the credit, for it has always been God. He has always been the reason for my sustainability. Recently turning 50, I was asked about my legacy, and what I hope it will be. But as I mentioned earlier, it’s not my legacy; it’s yours. I’m just telling stories through pages of words and photographs. However, if I’m ever truly blessed to leave an actual legacy, I hope it’s similar to the story I heard about Chicago Meat Packing businessman, Mr. Armour. When a passenger seated next to him on a plane asked him what he did, his response was this: “I tell people about Jesus and sell a little meat on the side.” That’s the real secret ingredient to everything in my life.

EDITOR’S NOTE

W

elcome to our anniversary issue! It’s hard to believe we started this journey 10 years ago, but what an exciting decade it has been. From my time as Social Editor to Special Projects Editor and now Editor in Chief, I’ve personally been a part of bringing some of the most interesting personalities, events, nonprofit organizations, and businesses in Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, and Oak Brook to your homes for the past five years—and it certainly has been a pleasure. A trip to the archives for our very special 10th anniversary issue was a treat. I hope you’ll enjoy the stories this month as much as I do. Our features this month focus on a look back over the past decade at the most memorable social outings, our 10 favorite covers, and 10 local institutions joining us in anniversary celebrations in 2021. With more than 100 issues in publication, choosing our top 10 was not an easy task, but certainly a rewarding

one, filled with nostalgia. Living & Giving is certainly a way of life in our communities, and while the COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted the way events took place in 2020 and 2021, we’re seeing the return to “normal” this fall. As the former Social Editor, I could not be more excited for the (safe) return of

galas, parties, polo matches, and more. I’d also like to turn your attention (and appreciation) to the 10 givers in our Giving Back section this month. Over the past decade, we’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the amazing community members making a difference, and The Givers spotlights 10 who you must know about. Our Best Dressed section is back in June, featuring 10 of our favorite looks from the past decade. Each September, we showcase the latest in fall fashion. In keeping with our anniversary theme, we have images from our past fashion shoots in Style this month—from a look back at Gianni Versace’s genius ’90s collection to country club couture. And what would an issue of Hinsdale Living be without a splash of some powerhouse women? In Esquire we have family law attorney Jacqueline Stephens Breisch of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck. With more than 10 years of experience under her belt, Stephens Breisch continues to keep her clients’ needs first. Ashley Rossi, founder of clean baby food line Tiny Human Food®, shares where she got her start and some of her favorites in Country Vs. Town this month. To round out our issue, we have the one and only R. Harold Zook. The famous architect’s name certainly rings a bell for residents of the Western Suburbs, as his renowned Cotswoldstyle architecture is a staple seen throughout Hinsdale. In Parting Words, Zook (as reimagined by former Hinsdale Living Editor in Chief and current Contributing Editor Sherry Thomas) takes a walk through the local streets and reflects on where the community is today. While putting together this special issue, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude—for the Hinsdale community, our team at Hinsdale Living, and all the truly amazing people I’ve had the opportunity to meet and feature in our magazine. The past year was quite the test for many, yet the stories always remained, because there is an abundance of interesting and giving personalities in the Western Suburbs. As you read through our special June anniversary issue, I hope you’ll feel the same pride for this amazing place we call home. Warmest Wishes, Kemmie Ryan kemmie@jwcmedia.com

© Charlotte Moss Designer, author, and philanthropist Charlotte Moss has long believed that flowers should not be reserved only for the rare occasion but instead are best deployed in everyday living. Moss’ delightful new coffee table book FLOWERS BY CHARLOTTE MOSS brings the garden indoors with inspiration for floral arrangements, container selection, and blossom placement throughout the house. Moss shares a decade’s documentation of floral concepts—from an intimate and welcoming cluster of blooms on a guest room’s bedside table to lavish displays for holiday celebrations. The photography evidences the visceral pleasure flowers bring to us both indoors and outdoors. Readers will be fascinated as Moss describes the contributions of past tastemakers including Gloria Vanderbilt, Pauline de Rothschild, Bunny Mellon, and C. Z. MAINTAINING THE FAMILY IN FAMILY LAW As a working mother, a child of divorce herself, and with more than 10 years of family law experience—including time as a Guardian ad Litem for children—Jacqueline Stephens Breisch brings a specialized outlook to family law. Informed by her own unique experiences, she is committed to keeping her clients’ needs first while creating working long-term solutions.

J

WORDS BY CAITLIN MCCAULEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN CAREY/FIG MEDIA

acqueline Stephens Breisch of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP brings a client-centered and solution-based perspective to family law. The secret to her success is understanding and recognizing that every case is unique with its own intricacies and nuances, both in how the law is interpreted and in the various relationship dynamics. Stephens Breisch believes that you can’t take just one approach for every case. By getting to know your clients, and understanding their goals and objectives, only then can you find a clear path to proceed and move forward efficiently and successfully. Unlike some areas of practice where there is a clear right and wrong, “there’s very little black and white in what we do, it’s a lot of gray,” says Stephens Breisch. Utilizing experience, legal skills, and effective communication, Stephens Breisch is able to advocate for her clients and provide them with excellent results in all aspects of their case. Every single case takes a different tone and a different approach. The one constant through it all though, is Stephens Breisch’s commitment to keeping litigation focused on a working end solution. Instead of focusing on the conflict of divorce itself, Stephens Breisch sees family law as working through a series of issues so that she can then help find a solution that will benefit her clients long after the case concludes, most particularly and especially when there are children involved. “I don’t take a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to my clients,” says Stephens Breisch. “It is important to take the time to truly get to know my clients, understand what is driving them, and educate them about their options so that I can provide creative solutions in negotiating, or prepare for litigation when that becomes necessary.” Stephens Breisch takes the emotion out of the case and then advocates for what will best suit her client and their family moving forward. And while compartmentalizing the emotional aspects of a case is important, Stephens Breisch maintains that you cannot let

yourself become completely hardened to it entirely. “It doesn’t matter that I’ve seen this issue 50 times before, my client hasn’t. If it’s a big deal to your client, you need to treat it like it is to you too,” says Stephens Breisch. Stephens Breisch’s experiences of being a product of divorce—as well as being a mother—uniquely inform the way she practices, particularly when children are involved. A trained Guardian ad Litem (GAL) for the court, Stephens Breisch always strives to keep the children in mind in her cases as well. A GAL is a court-appointed legal advocate for the children in highly contested cases. GALs represent the interests of the children in a case and are neutral, third-party attorneys appointed by the court, who can then make recommendations on certain issues and in general for the children’s welfare and best interests. Not only does Stephens Breisch’s experience as a GAL provide her with insight about the process, but it also allows her to provide invaluable tools and resources to her clients when a GAL is involved in her own case. Stephens Breisch keeps her outlook forward-facing. Her end goal is to improve the situations of her clients and help set them up for success after the proceedings are over and find real, tangible solutions for the family as a whole. She understands the issues she’s dealing with are highly sensitive to each family and that the landscape of family law is ever evolving. Whether that’s drafting parenting agreements that take into virtual learning options or doing her own due diligence and research into the financial intricacies of a case involving cryptocurrency, keeping her clients at the center of her practice has proven to be the key to her success. Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP’s Chicago office is located at 321 N. Clark Street, Suite 1200. For more information, call 312-641-5560 or visit sdflaw.com.

ASHLEY ROSSI may be known best as a thriving entrepreneur, but it’s her role

as “mom” that gives her the most satisfaction. Currently living in Naperville with her partner Colton and their four children—Christian (20), Luca (8), Gray (8), and Evan (5)—Rossi grew up in Clarendon Hills and attended Gower Middle School. But it wasn’t until she watched the stunning 2008 documentary Food, Inc. that she found her true calling. As the owner of the clean baby food line Tiny Human Food®, Rossi now works tirelessly to teach parents the difference between the developmental capabilities of littles who are fed a clean, nutritious diet rather than the shelf-stable heavy metal laden status quo. This busy founder and CEO shares her favorites from her hometown in the country and on the town: EDITED BY TRICIA DESPRES/PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA/HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST Mantra? “I am a deliberate creator... I can create my own reality and am never a mere ‘victim of circumstance’.” Best grooming tip? Always look the way you feel. As a mom and entrepreneur, there are times where the vitality that I feel on the inside doesn’t quite match my exhausted appearance, so while I don’t personally choose heavy makeup, man do I love a good under-eye concealer and mascara. Guilty pleasure? Coca-Cola. Favorite foods? Carmine’s in NYC. Music you love? You can find everything from Coldplay and EDM to Nat King Cole and Kenny Chesney in my collection of music. Best advice ever given to you? That I am not my circumstances. As a teen mom, you get a lot of people telling you who you’re going to be and how much you can’t accomplish. I stopped allowing my circumstances define

me 15 years ago and have never looked back. Best advice you’ve given? You are under no obligation to be the person you were even five minutes ago. If something doesn’t feel good or isn’t working, then reset immediately otherwise you’re choosing to stay stuck. When you wake up, you? I choose my thoughts and direction for the day very intentionally. Before bed, you? Meditate. What’s on your bookshelf? The Pursuit of Happyness, Steve Jobs, business books and works by Abraham Hicks. You can’t live without? Music, sunshine, and productivity. Love to escape to? Manhattan—it’s my happy place. Advice you would give to your younger self? You deserve everything you want and can have those things; don’t waste time around people who disagree with that.

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? Practically cute. Driving music? Anything goes. Place to eat? Pappadeaux’s. Best thing about country? It’s beauty. The perfect day is? Taking a drive, being present while enjoying the beautiful homes/streets, and grabbing a great meal at Pappadeaux’s.

Your style is? Date night: sleek and ready; family day: stylish and prepared. Can’t leave the house without? Shades. Driving music? Sinatra must be present. Place to eat? Ranali’s. The prosciutto and arugula pizza is unrivaled! Best thing about town? Driving down Lake Shore Drive on a sunny day. The perfect day is? A day at Navy Pier with the kids—a bike ride, good food, and sunshine.

PARTY OF THE YEAR(S) LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

The Clarendon Hills Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago’s annual fundraiser is one full of light and hope. The formal affair (which took an “athome” twist in 2020) brings together supporters raising funds for The Angel Harvey Family Health Center.

WELLNESS HOUSE BALL

For the past 31 years, Wellness House in Hinsdale has hosted its annual black-tie affair—proving to be one of the community’s favorite events to attend. As the largest fundraiser for the nonprofit, funds raised are used for programs supporting those who are living with cancer.

For the last 10 years, Hinsdale Living has had the distinct privilege of covering the Western Suburbs’ most loved events. While the pandemic may have redirected some of our parties, a look through the archives proves that Living & Giving is something our communities do best. We invite you to take a peek inside some of our favorite events over the past decade. TABLESCAPES

What’s not to love about the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago’s annual fundraiser? The group, who hosted its 23rd Tablescapes event in March, auctions off the stunning table displays (the namesake of the event), as well as one-of-a-kind auction items and baskets to raise funds for the Angel Harvey family Health Center. OAK BROOK POLO

Celebrating its 99th season in 2021, Oak Brook Polo Club’s match and polo day activities are a summertime must-attend. Known as the “sport of kings,” guests welcome the opportunity to throw on a fantastic fascinator or dapper suit, and drink champagne on the sidelines.

UNCORKED: PULL A CORK FOR CANCER

Scoreboard Charities’ beloved fall benefit began as “Wine, Women & Shoes” in 2016 before evolving into “Uncorked: Pull a Cork for Cancer” in 2018. The evening combines fun, food, and fashion, and Scoreboard Charities’ unique auction format which features one-ofa-kind donated sports memorabilia to be sold—with proceeds benefiting nonprofit organizations that support the fight against cancer. IGNITE ASHA GALA

Ignite Asha’s inaugural fundraiser took place in 2018 in Oak Brook and the party hasn’t stopped. The black-tie affair mixes cocktails and cuisine with top-tier entertainment like 2018’s famous Bollywood DJ, DJ Sohbash, and fundraising to help victims of human trafficking in India.

THE COMMUNITY HOUSE HOLIDAY BALL

Founded in 1941, The Community House in Hinsdale is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2021, leading up to an end-of-the-year party that cannot be missed. Through the years, this nonprofit has hosted one of the holiday’s most loved events, full of familiar faces and entertainment loved by all in attendance.

Tina & Dr. Jeffrey Weller, 2017

Now in its 71st year of service, the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club knows how to throw a party. The theme may change every year—from a love themed affair, “Amore,” and Gatsby gala to gilded glamour at the Millennium Knickerbocker and Grammy-glam at Burdi in 2021—but the cause remains the same—raising funds for charities most in need in the Chicago area.

WHIRL AT BROOKFIELD ZOO

The Chicago Zoological Society celebrated its 40th anniversary of the Whirl in May 2021. 2020 and 2021 were “Virtu-Whirl” events due to COVID-19, but this benefit tends to be a black-tie evening loved by all. Although guests love seeing fellow supporters and the entertainment, the on-site animal ambassadors truly make this evening one to remember.

JANUARY 2013

There’s something special about the premiere issue. Not only were Emma and Kim all smiles, but they shared amazing talent as well, making their story easy to tell.

Ferguson, a seasoned radio host who has entertained Chicagoans for 25 years made Hinsdale home in 2012 with his wife, Jen, and four children. Although they have moved from the area, Ferguson’s infectious personality—typically only heard over the airwaves— illuminates this cover and the feature inside.

TOP 10 COVERS

Time flies when you’re having fun. With more than 100 covers in our archives, Hinsdale Living has covered some of Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, and Oak Brook’s most interesting personalities for 10 years. As one can imagine, while scouring over past issues, it was hard to narrow it down to just 10. We hope you enjoy reminiscing over these covers from years past as much as we have. In 2014 Sweeney and his wife decided to leave Los Angeles and make Hinsdale home, all while taking on a new gig at the Oprah Winfrey Network. Finding a town where they felt right at home was paramount to their journey and they look right at home on this cover.

Amanda Ivanelli, a social media influencer and blogger called Hinsdale home while growing her family with husband Carl. Photography by Frank Ishman Ivanelli is stunning on this summer cover, but what really makes this one of our favorite covers is the small detail of hand placement. The influencer shared with our team that she and her husband, Carl, were expecting their fourth son, which made this cover of one Luxe Mama (as her blog is titled) all the more special.

PHILIP’S FLOWERS, OAK BROOK-60TH

Founded in 1923, Phillip’s Flowers operates six award-winning flower shops, a design center, a commercial landscaping operation, and is considered one of Chicago’s leading florists. The Oak Brook location has been serving the Western Suburbs for 60 years. TABLESCAPES STYLED BY YANKEE PEDDLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

YANKEE PEDDLER-50TH

When Susan Tanner opened Yankee Peddler in 1972, her goal was to create a unique place to buy giftware, tabletop, and interior décor items along with antiques to create a rich and wonderful interior like no other. Fifty years later, the shop is run by her daughter, Stacy Tanner Lorin.

THE COMMUNITY HOUSE-80TH

The Community House was created in 1941 by a group of visionaries who saw a need to support the community as the nation entered World War II. Today, the Hinsdale-based nonprofit continues to provide opportunities for athletics, arts and culture, counseling, education services, volunteer opportunities, and community connections.

PAGE’S RESTAURANT-40TH

Page’s Restaurant has been serving “simply delicious” breakfast and lunch in Hinsdale since 1981. Known for being quaint, friendly, and unpretentious, locals continue to rave about Page’s homemade apple cider donuts.

THE COURTYARD-30TH

Since 1991, sales from The Courtyard’s unique selection of previously owned, high-quality furniture and one-of-a-kind home accessories have supported The Wellness House, a Hinsdalebased nonprofit organization that helps people meet the challenges of life after a cancer diagnosis—resulting in more than $4 million in contributions over the last 30 years.

In 1922, businessman Paul Butler founded the Oak Brook Polo Club (OBPC), which today is one of the oldest polo clubs in the U.S. Ninety-nine years later, OBPC continues to be a popular Sunday tradition and social scene—known for entertaining Hollywood celebrities, dignitaries, royalty, and Chicago’s elite. VILLAGE OF BURR RIDGE-65TH

Known as “A Very Special Place,” the Village of Burr Ridge was once the home of the Sioux, Pottawattamie, Ottawa, and Chippewa Indians. In 1956, 143 local residents incorporated these rolling hills of farmland as the Village of Harvester, later changing the name to Burr Ridge, due to its large stand of burr oak trees.

BALDINELLI-35TH

Baldinelli Pizza in Hinsdale began making a name for itself in 1986, offering a modern twist of Italian and American favorites. This family-owned, Italian-American restaurant turns food into an art form, serving Hinsdale and the Western Suburbs for 35 years.

GIVING BACK

THE GIVERS

It’s no secret that the residents of our communities feel a sense of responsibility to care for those around them. For our 10th anniversary, please join us in celebrating 10 givers in the Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Oak Brook, and Clarendon Hills communities who are constantly stiving to make our communities exceptional. TRACEY TARANTINO DIBUONO is synonymous with fashion shows and Chicago area charities. For more than 30 years, DiBuono and her full-service production company, Zzazz Productions, has produced virtual and live runway shows, styling, talent, and more for The Service Club of Chicago; Ingalls Foundation; the Apparel Industry Board; JourneyCare; the Oak Brook Chapter of Infant Welfare Society; St. Jude Chicago; and many more. Her work reaches beyond the local area, but if you’ve been to a Chicago fashion event for charity, you have most certainly seen DiBuono and the Zzazz’s team’s tireless work. DiBuono was featured in our August 2020 issue and in our Living & Giving sections.

ROB & STACY JOHNSON jumped in as active philanthropists in the local community as soon as they moved to Hinsdale—often making black-tie affairs for nonprofits into their date nights. The couple supports organizations such as Wellness House, the Hinsdale Humane Society, Children’s Home + Aid, Misericordia Heart of Mercy, and the Brain Research Foundation. In 2012, former Governor Pat Quinn, even proclaimed September 22 “Rob Johnson Day” in honor of Rob’s work with Neumann Family Services. Rob and Stacy were featured on the cover of our December/January 2012 issue and in our Living & Giving sections.

CASSANDRA MA is a clinical psychologist who founded nonprofit Reclaim13 (formerly Compassionate Communities for Children) and Cherish House—the only specialized “safe” house in Illinois for minor victims of sex trafficking—in 2012. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Downers Grove-based agency whose mission is to end sexual exploitation. GIVING BACK

LISA KOLAVENNU started with Wellness House—a nonprofit that offers programs which support those living through cancer and their friends or family members—13 years ago. She currently serves as the nonprofit’s Executive Director, where she brings her talented skillset—combining her background in psychology with a personal understanding of the support needed by Wellness House’s clients, due to her own father’s cancer diagnosis years earlier. Kolavennu was featured in our February 2021 issue and in our Living & Giving sections.

STEVE & MEGAN DRAGICH met in 1978, just before Megan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D)— a life-changing moment. Since then, the Dragichs—along with their two children—have made finding a cure to T1D a priority. Serving as the JDRF’s 2015 Fund A Cure family, the couple has raised nearly $1 million on behalf of the organization. The Dragichs were featured in our November 2020 issue.

JACKELYN KASTANIS founded Simply From The Heart, a nonprofit that provides cancer patients with complimentary bedside beauty services to help raise self-esteem and encourage well-being. Kastanis started the organization in 2015 after her childhood best friend, Brooke Bolley, tragically passed away from esophageal cancer. While Bolley underwent treatment, Kastanis would spend time pampering her friend; helping to lift her spirits during a distressing time. Her organization has helped more than 5,000 critically ill patients nationwide. Kastanis was featured on the cover of our February 2020 issue and in our Living & Giving sections.

DR. CHRIS COLBERT is not only an attending ER physician, but the Assistant Program Director of the emergency medicine residency program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)—a role which became even more vital in the wake of COVID-19. Colbert continues to educate young doctors in residency and the community on emergency medicine, more recently focusing on social emergency medicine. He serves as a chair for continuing medical education for the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians and in 2021 chaired the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians spring symposiums. Colbert was featured in our February 2021 issue.

JANUARY PAWLUK has made it her mission to empower young girls through Mission Propelle and charity work. She introduced Mission Propelle (formerly Smarty Pants Yoga), an empowerment program for elementary school girls that incorporates yoga, reading, and mentoring, to the students of Brook Forest Elementary School in Oak Brook in 2015. She is also an active member of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club and Infant Welfare Society Auxiliary—Oak Brook Chapter. Pawluk was featured on the cover of our May 2016 issue and in our Living & Giving sections. H I N S D A L E L I V I N G    91

hen Sal Quatrochi started selling Fords in 1978, he had one goal in mind—to own a Ford dealership. “It was always a passion of mine since I was a kid. I could tell you the make and model of every car on the street,” Sal says. “I got into the car business and I knew owning a dealership was going to be my end game someday; that is what I ultimately wanted.” Sal started his career in the business at Woodfield Ford in Schaumburg and has been selling Fords ever since. “Ford has been around forever and has been the innovator in the industry—from the Model A to the assembly line. I have a passion for quality in a company and in our dealership; our team strives for quality daily,” he says. Sal runs the dealership with a family atmosphere, and his customers—who span generations—are treated like family every time they visit. “We are family owned and operated, and since day one—October 1, 1985, when I purchased the dealership—it’s the employees who run it with me,” Sal says. “Most of my employees are 15 to 20 plus year employees. One of my managers started as a porter and is still with me, 30 plus years later.” Sal takes pride in the fact that customers will see the same faces when they bring their vehicles in for service or when their children or grandchildren come to the dealership to purchase their vehicles. “When our customers come in and see the same employees, they really get to know one another and feel very comfortable and ‘at

home.’ We have such great relationships, it’s unbelievable,” he says. “When I look back 30 years, I remember the customers coming in to purchase; now it is their children and grandchildren buying vehicles from us.” Westfield Ford has long been committed to the community and supports a wide variety of organizations and charities benefitting residents of the Western Suburbs and surrounding areas. Support for The Cradle, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Cure Autism Now, the Kelli Joy O’Laughlin Memorial Foundation, and Share Your Soles directly benefit friends, family, and long-time customers of the dealership. “Autism is very important to us. We have friends, family, and many customers with autistic children, which is why this is such a huge passion for us,” Sal says. “We also believe in giving back to our community, which we do by sponsoring the various charity endeavors at our local grade schools and high schools.” The dealership also supports Helping Hands Center, the International Center on Deafness & the Arts (ICODA), The Navy Seal Foundation, Scoreboard Charities, and Camp One Step which provides free programs and camp experiences to children with cancer and their families. After 35 and a half years in business, it’s clear that at Westfield Ford, a love of family and Fords—mixed with dedication, community support, and hard work—is the key to success. Westfield Ford is located at 6200 S. LaGrange Road in Countryside, 708-354-8600, westfieldford.com.

DESIGNING WOMAN Divine Consign Founder and CEO Kellie Scott finds treasures and shares them with her loyal customers WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

A

s Kellie Scott, a well-known small business owner, settled into her sprawling new home in Hinsdale earlier this year, so did many of her most treasured items. One of those items was an antique Buddhist prayer cabinet. “I still remember the day that one came into our store,” the founder and CEO of Divine Consign Inc. says. “The cabinet opened up to three different levels with three separate doors, and inside there was an altar with lights. It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen—like peeling back the layers of an onion. It was absolutely gorgeous. I took it home and it’s been with me ever since.” She laughs for a moment. “Every single thing in my house is from the store.” Of course, this is completely understandable. As the owner of one of the most treasured retail consignment furniture boutiques in the area, Scott knows that when you see something at her store, it’s best to take it home quickly. “We have customers who come in two or three times a week,” remarks Scott, whose high-end store offers a wide range of furniture and home decor gathered from area showrooms, furniture stores, local designers, and model homes. “I would say we bring in 50 to 100 items every day. The store is never the same place twice because you truly never know what’s going to come through the door. You have to make up your mind quickly, or it won’t be around.” A lover of design from a young age, the Wisconsin native and Marquette University alumna originally planned a life practicing law. Yet, after working her way up to Managing Partner of the Law Firm of Scott, Halsted & Babetch, P.C., Scott made the crucial decision to go a different direction professionally. “It was a daily argument, either with other lawyers or with your own client,” Scott remembers. “I wanted to pursue something a little less combative, so I chose retail, she laughs. “It’s been a labor of love for me for the past 12 years.” In 2018, as the business continued to grow and Divine Consign was beginning to burst at the seams with inventory, Scott made the decision to move from Oak Park to North Riverside, where they were able to take advantage of 20,000 square feet of space. Her customers followed. “We have the greatest customers and consigners,” gushes Scott, who recently donated a number of pieces to help furnish the

apartments of refugees from Syria. “The community and I have a symbiotic relationship, as they bring in the items we sell. The community is who made us, and I never forget that.” And it is this community that continues to support Divine Consign, especially as pandemic-weary shoppers look to inject new life into their homes. “We have so many people consigning items and then purchasing other items,” concludes Scott. “There are also several shortages in the furniture industry due to the pandemic. For example, if you order furniture right now, you are in for a long wait. That’s what makes our store special. We have what you need, in stock, ready to touch and feel and take home today.” Divine Consign Furniture is located at 1800 S. Harlem Avenue in North Riverside. Is Working From Home Taking a Toll on Your Body? 92% of chiropractors reported an increase in patients with neck pain since stay-at-home orders began. The average human head weighs 12 pounds, but when it’s bent 45 degrees to look at a too-low laptop screen, it exerts nearly 50 pounds of force on the neck. Stop prioritizing getting through the day over your body and proper ergonomics. If you’re already feeling aches and pains, you will likely be a candidate for musculoskeletal injuries and joint disease down the road. Therapeutic Health offers innovative chiropractic care for treatment of:

• Neck and Back Pain • Headaches • Poor Posture • Numbness in Hands & Feet • Sciatica • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Therapeutic Health also specializes in functional medicine, laboratory analysis, food sensitivity and micronutrient testing, bio-identical hormones, stem cell therapy.

IN GOOD HANDS Wheaton native Dr. Rohini Mathrani brings a personal approach to her orthodontics practice in Western Springs. WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

F

or Hinsdale resident Dr. Rohini Mathrani, medicine runs in the family. “I grew up in the Western Suburbs with my parents and my brother and sister,” Mathrani says. “They all ended up becoming physicians, so I always had an interest in health care growing up and gravitated toward the health sciences.” Mathrani, who grew up in Wheaton and attended WheatonWarrenville South High School, attended Northwestern University for her undergraduate degree and University of IllinoisChicago for dental and orthodontics school, where she completed her residency. “I always had an interest in dentistry, particularly because a couple of my uncles were dentists. I went and observed them, and I really enjoyed how dentistry was so hands on and patient focused,” Dr. Mathrani says. “By my third year of dental school, I rotated through the orthodontic department and that’s when I knew I wanted to be an orthodontist.” Dr. Mathrani started her career in New York City, along with her husband who was starting his law career. Five years and two kids later, the family made its way back to the Western Suburbs of Chicago to be closer to family. She initially worked for large practices in a corporate setting, but over time felt that she became disillusioned and developed a desire to open her own practice. “I felt like the appointments were always rushed and resulted in a lower quality of care and less time interacting with patients. I loved orthodontics, but I was ready to do it my way,” she says. At her practice, Spring Orthodontics in Western Springs, which

opened its doors in 2018, she feels she has the freedom to design a better patient experience. “I really like how I can spend a lot of time with my patients and do things my way. I’m able to have my own systems in place, use the materials that I want, and I own the equipment,” Dr. Mathrani says. “This allows me to get a better result.” She also has the freedom to create her own team, which helps shape the experience she wants to provide for patients. “One of the things that sets us apart is that we have a great team. Everyone who works here really values patient care and goes above and beyond to do the most for our patients,” she says. “Because we’re more of a boutique practice, we’re able to be with patients every step in their journey with us. We also have the time to communicate with the patients and their families.” Spring Orthodontics treats children of all ages, as well as adults. “We see a lot of kids, teenagers, and adults. I like that variety. We do everything from early orthodontics to aligners and braces for both adults and teenagers,” she says. Some new technology Dr. Mathrani is using includes a scanner that eliminates the need for impressions. “We have an inter-oral scanner so we no longer need those impressions that patients gag on,” she says. “It’s been a gamechanger for us, and it makes the patient’s experience so much more pleasant.” Dr. Mathrani’s expert training and personalized care ensures Spring Orthodontics’ patients are in good hands. Spring Orthodontics is located at 800 Hillgrove Avenue, Suite 200, in Western Springs, 708-505-2525, westernspringsorthodontist.com.

WELCOME RELIEF As the pandemic continues to challenge the mental health of the world over, Relief TMS CEO Susan Mueller brings her state-of-theart therapy to those when they need it most.

2

WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER/PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

020 was a year like no other. It challenged even those who seemed invincible. And if you were someone who was struggling with mental health issues prior to the beginning of the pandemic, the trials of 2020 most likely took your plight to the next level. Fortunately for many, Susan Mueller, CEO of Relief TMS, had the foresight to found her company just when patients were in the need of most support. “If someone is calling for mental health help, they need answers that day,” says Mueller, who has worked in the mental health field for more than a decade and knew there had to be a new way to help patients. “They need someone to empathize with them, and they need help immediately. Mental health doesn’t wait until it’s convenient, so we try to get a plan in place for our patients the day they call. To think that in early 2020, we only had one office in the Chicago area and now we have four—and we’re busy—speaks volumes to the need that is out there.” Relief TMS—with facilities in Northbrook, St. Charles, Oak Brook, and Chicago—offers a noninvasive solution to depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and other mental health diagnoses without the use of medication, side effects, or invasive procedures. For those interested in coming off of their antidepressants or avoiding the drugs, TMS may be the answer. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) works by emitting gentle magnetic pulses to the area of the brain that regulates mood. These pulses activate specific areas of the brain and decrease symptoms of depression. The clinicians who dispense the treatments at Relief TMS are hands on and always interacting with patients, who sit comfortably in a chair during their 20-minute session and can drive themselves home after treatment.

Relief TMS uses Brainsway technology which has been demonstrated to have exceptional results due to its broad and deep prefrontal stimulation. Unlike medication, the benefits of TMS are durable. This means that patients experience lasting remission of symptoms long after treatment has been completed. TMS has a 75 percent success rate for patients with treatmentresistant depression or OCD. Even in cases where medications haven’t proven effective, TMS can help patients overcome their symptoms and experience the best version of themselves. ReliefTMS also offers psychotherapy and intranasal Ketamine (Spravato) for treatment mresistant depression and suicidal ideations. “Our patients feel such a sense of relief when they find us,” says Mueller. “They’ve often tried a number of other things before they get to us that haven’t worked. TMS requires a commitment to the process, but when people walk through our doors, they are very serious about doing what they must to get better.” TMS is FDA-approved and many insurance plans cover the treatment, but it might not be for everyone. The most important thing to the staff at Relief TMS is that individuals get the right help they need. “The medical device we use is the latest technology and definitely ahead of the game,” she says. “But we won’t treat a patient if it’s not right for them. I have a whole network of therapists and doctors I can refer someone to, and I’m always willing to help someone whether I treat them or not. Restoring mental health is what is most important to us.” Relief TMS is located at 1100 Jorie Boulevard, Suite 172, in Oak Brook, 630-974-6602, relieftms.com.

Profile CHOOSING A SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY

A

WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

s seniors age, their medical needs and daily activity needs increase. In my practice, we often see seniors who were independent and living in their homes develop medical issues that require more help, support, and medical care. Fortunately, there are wonderful senior living communities with an array of on-site services. Sometimes navigating the options and choices can be very stressful to families dealing with aging loved ones. There are various types of senior living care levels. These include independent living, assisted living, memory care, and nursing homes. Each provides a different level of service and care. Independent living is basically an apartment, rented by an individual or couple, with no additional health care services. Other on-site services like dining, laundry, and activities may be available but this can vary from one community to the next. All medication needs, doctor appointments, testing, and services are left to the senior to coordinate. Assisted living includes some level of nursing care, certified nursing assistant support, and usually medication management. Ask about staff to resident ratios, hospitalization rates, and other available services such as physical therapy. Memory care is typically the assisted living support level, in a secured or locked area of the community. This is to prevent residents

from accidentally leaving due to cognition issues or decline. Nursing homes are often reserved for the highest level of care needed. This includes treatments like IV antibiotics, tracheostomy care, chronic large wounds, and post-surgical therapy. There are long-term residents of nursing homes as well, depending on their needs. At my practice, we continue to provide important needed care at the assisted living, memory care, and nursing home levels. We also provide care for independent living seniors and that is gaining in popularity. It allows health care to be conveniently brought to the senior, prevents many common issues like falls, and keeps folks independent longer. This has been financially beneficial to families, as independent living is typically less expensive than the other higher levels of care. Shopping for your aging loved one’s place to live can be challenging. It’s also stressful to relocate from a home they have loved and lived in most of their lives to a smaller condo or apartment. Most families prefer a location close by and one that is within their budget. However, there are many other factors and services to consider. Visiting various communities is key to making the final decision. Factor in the ancillary services, food quality, activity programs, and most importantly the medical care available on site. PA RTING WOR DS

A SORT OF HOMECOMING

What would renowned Hinsdale architect R. Harold Zook think of the village if he were to walk our streets today? In honor of Hinsdale Living’s 10th anniversary, we channel his legacy through imagined musings.

T

WORDS BY R. HAROLD ZOOK / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

here is an old saying that “you can’t go home again,” that the people and places we leave behind are best left imprinted in our memories. But sometimes, however strange it may sound, home comes back to find you—in my case, exactly 72 years after I left this Earth. My name is Roscoe Harold Zook and I have to confess, I’m just as baffled as you are. It could be that my name was in the news again late last year (as they sold off bits and pieces of a 1929 Hinsdale house I designed in a “demolition sale”) or that the folks at the Hinsdale Historical Society have been summoning my spirit through the tireless work they’ve been doing since 2004 to rescue (and relocate) my beloved home and studio. Or maybe it’s just the unprecedented (at least in this century) shift in our mindset as a result of the most recent pandemic—the pivot back to home, to finding a permanent place to call our own in a world that’s constantly changing. That’s certainly what I found here in Hinsdale in 1924 when I built a small house for my young family at 327 S. Oak Street—a brick, Cotswold-style cottage with a cedar shingle version of a “thatched roof.” It was my own vision of a fairy tale and to my delight, the timing could not be more perfect. The war was over, my generation’s great pandemic (we called it Spanish Flu) had passed, and life was finally copacetic. And boy, were they nifty times for architecture. After graduating from Armour Institute of Technology (now part of IIT), I got to apprentice with the great Howard Van Doren Shaw, where I met William F. McCaughey—my future business partner. We opened an office in the Marquette Building in downtown Chicago (it’s still there, I’m told, with a spiffy restaurant downstairs) and did a little bit of everything. Commercial buildings; homes through-

out the Midwest. Even designed a movie theater right before the stock market crash (The Pickwick, which is still operating in Park Ridge). It got tough right after that with the Great Depression, but we kept going. And yet through it all, my heart was where my home was, and the villagers that welcomed my, well, some would say “quirky,” style. Those who keep count can tell you my name was attached to 31 houses and six commercial buildings in Hinsdale. In addition to the rooflines and shutters and arches and architectural details borrowed from English Tudor houses and Cotswold cottages, I added my own signature touch—an homage to the mighty spider, nature’s finest builder. It tickles me that these spiderweb designs have become a hallmark of what people are now calling a “Zook home,” and to see that the village has aged relatively well in my absence. Some of the houses are newer and yes, we’ve lost some landmark beauties through the decades, but Hinsdale is just as captivating today as it was when me and fellow architects William G. Barfield, Edwin H. Clark, and Eben Ezra (E.E.) Roberts were manifesting our visions for this West Suburban village nearly a century ago. So, while traveling back through time with imagined musings may be nothing more than a writer’s folly (on a certain magazine’s anniversary), the work that the Hinsdale Historical Society does to bridge the past, present, and future is not. My story (told through the ongoing efforts to preserve my home and studio) is just one of many from our 148 years of history that’s out there, waiting to be discovered. Now back to that old adage. Can you ever truly “go home again?” In Hinsdale, maybe you can. To learn more about the Hinsdale Historical Society’s efforts to preserve the R. Harold Zook home and other historic properties, visit hinsdalehistory.org.
