EDITOR’S NOTE 106

JOURNEYS

M

arch, the month of unknown in the Midwest. Will it snow? Will it be sunny and 70? Maybe both. As the world around us “springs” into beauty, I hope you’ll take a moment to step outside your home smell the flowers—even if there’s still a little snow on the ground. And, if your home isn’t surrounded by flowers yet, we have some of the Western Suburbs top home and design professionals to help. Our annual Luxe Living feature fills the pages of this month’s Home & Design issue. From outdoor landscape designers, architects and builders, and painting and door restoration to real estate gurus and interior design experts, we have the best of the best in the area in our feature, Home Sweet Hinsdale. On our cover is Reem Hassaballa and her stunning Hinsdale home that Parisian dreams are made of. Hassaballa has been featured in national publications like HGTV Magazine and has the most unique story to accompany her family’s journey to settling into a historic home. Local interior designer Aimee Sahlas and her latest Hinsdale re-design is also featured this month. Sahlas unique ability to update a 1990s home, but keep treasured heirlooms

114 LIVING & GIVING

intact makes her a designer worth watching. See her latest projects on Instagram— @aimeesahlasdesign. We have an exclusive Anantara NY look inside luxury Palace Budapest auction house, Hindman Hotel Lobby Auctioneers, latest offerings in Collector’s Corner. And in Dinner Date, Peter and Kate Michael take us to RH Rooftop Restaurant and Wine Bar in Oak Brook. Filled with signature RH pieces, the new RH gallery is something out of the Gilded Age. Country Vs. Town highlights Allison Schutz and her work with modernly concepted interior design firm The Finish. Legal experts Anita Ventrelli and Brendan Hammer of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP share their expertise in Esquire and Family Law. Their attorneys are certainly worth noting if you’re working through adjustments in your family. And, just in time for Spring, we have a look inside the Clarendon Hills Auxiliary Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago’s annual benefit—Light Up the Night Garden Party. Typically held in January, the group moved their event to April, and it’s one not to miss. March is such a special month for me, my daughter Kassie will be celebrating her fourth birthday mid-month and I can’t wait for the (hopefully sunny) festivities. I’d love to see what you’re celebrating this month. Be sure to share with us on Instagram—@hinsdale_living. And with that, I present to you our March issue. Happy reading! Warmest Wishes, Kemmie Ryan Kemmie@jwcmedia.com

THE BUZZ

Prepare to laugh your masks off at The Community House’s annual revue––HINSDALE: UNMASKED. The Community House Players bring their entertaining style and humor to the stage and poke fun at the village we call home in the most endearing and inappropriate ways. The two-hour evening performances by legendary local talent offer lighthearted lampooning and will be performed on the newly dedicated Dick Johnson Memorial Stage, in honor of Johnson, the founder of The Community House Players and The Community Revue. Executive Director Dan Janowick says, “Dick was a founding member of The Community House Players and he appeared in every show since the very beginning. While his presence, talent, and booming voice are truly missed, the show must go on, and we know Dick would be proud of the great work being done on his stage!” To join the laughter, visit thecommunityhouse.org/communityrevue22.

Over the course of his 50-year career, Jacques Grange has designed homes for the world’s most respected collectors, artists, designers, and tastemakers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, François Pinault, Valentino, Stavros Niarchos, Aerin Lauder, and HRH The Princess of Hanover. His classical training at Paris’s École Boulle and École Camondo, his early experience with the French design legend Henri Samuel, and his passion for contemporary art have resulted in a uniquely discerning approach to interior design. Grange’s seemingly natural, “non-designed” aesthetic is revealed through his unusual way of grouping objects, and an unparalleled sense of style and attention to detail. The book illustrates Grange’s wide-ranging inspirations and exquisite taste through 31 new residential projects in Europe and America, from a luxury hôtel particulier in Paris to a chic beachside cabana in Comporta, Portugal, and a midcentury-modern house in Los Angeles. Texts and interviews by Parisian gallerist Pierre Passebon delineate Grange’s approach to design and decoration. Previously unpublished photography by François Halard captures these singular projects with profound sensibility. COUNTRY VS. TOWN “Helping people has always been my purpose, and the best way I can impact an individuals’ life is through my gift of design,” says ALLISON SCHUTZ, a designer with The Finish, a unique interior design firm created in 2019 by Stephanie Purzycki and Kaitlin Madden to fill a void they experienced whenever they visited their friend’s homes and were asked for their decorating advice. Schutz grew up in Downers Grove and studied at Illinois State University and College of DuPage. Following her formal education, Schutz continued to expand her knowledge, working on commercial and hospitality design projects like the Chicago Tribune building and Topgolf locations, and residential homes. When it comes to Schutz design style, she describes as a blend of old and new, with a dash of uniqueness. “I like to push design boundaries and take you out of your comfort zone to create a space that you will never want to stop showing off,” she says. “I approach interior design by blending style and function effortlessly, while adding a touch of whimsical. Whether it is a very eclectic style or a simple and timeless design, each space has the flavor of the clients’ personality.” Schutz helps clients with projects big and small at The Finish, which blends the best of traditional design services with e-design. Her clients work with her in their home (or via FaceTime/ Zoom) to solve specific problems in the space, with no budget minimum. When she isn’t working with clients to make their home their own, Schutz can be found singing karaoke, cooking, spending time outdoors, and spending time with her two rescue pups—Isla and Nash—and friends and family. Here are a few of this creative designer’s favorites when in the country and on the town: EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST Mantra? Everything you have dreamed of is one step outside your comfort zone. Best grooming tip? The best thing to you can do for yourself is to drink a lot of water. Guilty pleasure? Riding motorcycles. Favorite foods? If I could eat oatmeal raisin cookies every day I would. Music you love? I love all music. Best advice ever given to you? With passion comes success. When you wake up, you? Snuggle with my pups. Before bed, you? Read. What’s

on your bookshelf? Books, new accessories, and old vintage pieces that were my grandparents who traveled the world. You can’t live without? Seasons. I love the change of weather and how each season exposes new colors, beauty, and life. Love to escape to? I’m a mountain girl through and through. I used to live in a ski town in Colorado, so when I have a vacation––I head to the mountains. Advice you would give to your younger self? Go with your gut––it’s always correct. And the phrase I hated as a kid but now repeat myself––everything happens for a reason.

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? I love all styles, but my personal style is eclectic. I am like Phoebe in Friends. I love when each piece has a story. Can’t leave the house without? A list. Driving music? I prefer to have the radio off in the car … it’s my downtime. Place to eat? I love to go to Chef Soon’s Sushi in Lisle, Kama Indian Bistro in LaGrange, and Boston Fish Market in Des Plaines. Shop? I frequent the Home Depot a lot, as I am a very hands-on gal. Best thing about country? Having a backyard––summertime dinner parties, forest reserves, farmers markets, each town’s different festivals. Worst thing about country? The amount of train tracks. I somehow get stuck by freight trains all the time. The perfect day is? In the winter, a robust red wine and watching a great movie or reading a good book with my dogs snuggling by my side, is a perfect evening after a long creative day.

Your style is? City style to me is classic elegance with a pop of vintage pieces. Can’t leave the house without? Flip flops! I love my heels in the city, but a girl needs to give her feet a break after a while. Shop? I enjoy shopping for décor and furniture. I have a chair obsession. I truly believe (as everyone should) a chair has so much personality. I love to shop for décor and vintage furnishings in the city on Grand Ave in West Town, as well as shopping Architectural Artifacts, The Lazy Dog, Salvage One, and Urban Remains. Best thing about town? The variety of culture, entertainment, and food. Worst thing about town? The traffic. The perfect day is? In the summer, a perfect day in the city for me is starting the day off at brunch with friends and mimosas before heading to a local fest and perusing through the amazing artist tents.

A

s a Senior Specialist and the Director of Hindman’s sales of European Decorative Arts, the category of collecting that includes furniture, sculpture, carpets, ceramics, mirrors, and more, I am often asked what’s “in” and what’s “out.” My colleagues and I advise our clients on acquiring for their collections, how to furnish a historic or a brand-new home, and how our firm can help them with transitions in their lives. Regrettably, the word “collecting” has a public relations problem. People today are turned off by the concepts of collections and clutter … yet people are collecting. They do it on Instagram—collecting images, collecting ideas, collecting digital art, collecting people. Our job is to teach this new audience how easily the hoarder’s instinct (it is inside all of us) can be applied with great pleasure to physical ob-

jects. You might think “I am not interested in antiques,” but historic objects absolutely belong in contemporary rooms. Incorporating something with the patina of age adds personality and character; a single rare object casts its glow across everything else in a room. I would advise you should never hire a designer who only buys from manufacturers’ showrooms. Historic design and decorative arts are as cherished now as they were in our grandparents’ day—what has changed is the way we use them in our homes. It is out of fashion to fill a house with collections and formal furniture; many people will buy two or three very good things, the best of the best, and juxtapose them against more inviting furniture in open rooms. If you bring home a 1740s gilded Rococo mirror with opulent details, give it room to breathe. It needs a stark white wall or an uncrowded room to show itself off. Auctions bring modern and historic designs from all over the world to one’s doorstep, at a range of price points from entry-level to major commitment. It is possible to own near-museum-worthy examples of the finest furniture ever made, often for less than the cost of something from the Merchandise Mart and without waiting fourteen months in this supply chain-challenged climate. However, you should not expect instant gratification. Dynamic rooms with meaningful works of art take years to build; the process cannot be rushed. There is a strategy to buying at auction, and the advice is the same whether you are spending $1,000 on your first chair or $100,000 on a major work of art. Do all your research and decide how much you want to spend before the auction begins. Bidding moves at light speed; only with preparation are you guaranteed to get what you want at a comfortable price. Be aware of the premium, a commission you pay to the auction house on top of the hammer price. Get a second opinion before making a big purchase. Seek the knowledge of an art adviser or a trusted and impartial dealer, who can protect you from paying too much, buying something fake, or otherwise making a mistake. Be aware that items may need “freshening” before they are ready to bring home. You or your designer should have preferred upholsterers, refinishers, framers, and restorers. Lastly, do not approach the auction looking for something. Have an open mind and let yourself be moved by something new. Experienced collectors do not look for anything specific, rather they say, “show me what you think is the best.” They are looking for beautiful objects made from costly or exotic materials, fine workmanship, or sometimes just a better version of something they already own. Above all, have fun. Collecting is an encyclopedic experience that brings a lifetime of enjoyment. Find a friend or a partner who likes to learn, and you will never be bored. The European Furniture & Decorative Arts department will present a live and online auction from April 20 to 21, with bidding beginning at 10 am, hindmanauctions.com/auctions/1017-european-furnituredecorative-arts. An online auction will follow on April 22, also at 10 am, hindmanauctions.com/auctions/1018-european-furniture-decorative-arts. Bidding is available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room, bid. hindmanauctions.com or the Hindman app. For more information, contact Corbin Horn at 312-280-1212 or corbinhorn@hindmanauctions.com.

FINDING YOUR FIT: WHAT MATTERS WHEN HIRING A DIVORCE LAWYER Anita Ventrelli hears a lot from people who regret things about their family law cases. A common theme she sees in those with regrets comes from a lack of connection to the lawyer they hired and how that relationship affected their experience. Ventrelli discusses the importance of looking for what you value in the lawyer you select and treating the hiring process as an investment in yours and your family’s future. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

M

ost people who hire a divorce lawyer don’t see it for what it is, an investment in both their present peace of mind and in their future. Anita Ventrelli, of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, knows what prospective clients should ask about and what qualities they should look for when interviewing potential attorneys. One of Ventrelli’s career-defining cases found her when a quadriplegic mother of four special needs children reached out to her. She hoped to find an attorney who believed in her case instead of telling her she had no way to avoid surrendering custody. Ventrelli told the naysayers they would see that that her client had a better team to meet the children’s needs. Today, that mother has sole legal custody of her children who live with her full time. Why? Because Ventrelli found ways to make a Guardian, two evaluators and a Judge see her client as a person, not a disability. While it surprised many, there was never a doubt in Ventrelli’s mind that her client didn’t have everything she needed to parent her children. “When you believe in somebody’s case, working through it and putting it together becomes a labor of love,” says Ventrelli. “Believing is the whole ball game.” The right attorney listens to what someone wants, thinks creatively, and helps with goal setting, education, and cost benefit analysis. Well-rounded lawyers know how to research, write, do discovery, run a team, roll with the unexpected and navigate courtrooms. They work in dispute resolution and litigate, and they excel at communicating. For clients, this

means listening without judgment or agenda. Good lawyers adapt and work with client strengths while counseling realistic expectations and issue spotting for risks. “It’s not just about the law, it’s about the law as it touches people’s lives,” says Ventrelli. Ventrelli sees people asking only about legal process and not about how the relationship will work. While experience and rates matter, equally important questions deal with how the lawyer works, for example: “If I send you an email, when will you answer? How do to I reach you for an afterhours emergency? How will you help me understand the processes that the case requires? What role do I play? Such questions will provide insight into communication’s style and methods. If you feel better leaving the consultation than you did when you went in, it’s a sign of good fit. “My goal is to get my clients through the process on a noregrets basis,” says Ventrelli. When clients tell her what they want, why, and what might change their goals, it gives her a clear picture of what she has to work with and priceless insight into a client’s personality, motivations, and how they work best. This fuel’s Ventrelli’s creative drive to tell each client’s story in the most persuasive and legally supported manner possible. The Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP Chicago office is located at 321 N. Clark St., Suite 1200. For more information, call 312-641-5560 or visit sdflaw.com.

Glam When Reem and Hesham Hassaballa agreed to tour a historic property in Hinsdale three years ago, it was merely to admire the vintage detail and take notes for an ambitious new build they envisioned for their family. Instead, they fell in love—embarking on a journey that is now being followed by interior design enthusiasts around the world. S

ometimes you don’t know what you want until it’s right in front of you. For Reem Hassaballa, an interior design-obsessed mother of four, that’s exactly how she and husband, Hesham, felt when they walked into an elegant, 1910 George Maher landmark in downtown Hinsdale three years ago. The house hunt had her feeling a bit like Goldilocks. She had a wish list. She had a plan. But nothing was ever quite “just right.” “We were planning on building near Fullersburg Woods off of York Road,” explains Reem, who chronicled the family’s story on her blog at reemsdesign.com. “But after going through the initial design process of the house, we decided to throw in the towel because we didn’t like the builder’s work.” That wasn’t the only thing they didn’t like. When the family first moved to Hinsdale in 2014—just five years after the tragic loss of their daughter, Bayan Hassaballa, to Ataxia-Telangiectasia and Lymphoma—they were in a new construction home located within walking distance of downtown. While the new house they were planning to build would be much larger, she began to realize she’d miss being able to walk her children to school or grab a quick drink from Starbucks. So, when the Hassaballas went back to the drawing board to restart their search for a dream home, location moved to the top of what was already a very long list—a list that seemed more impossible by the minute. They had their hearts set on new construction, but they also craved the exquisite architectural detail and finishes usually only found in older homes. Then their realtor, Dawn McKenna of the Dawn McKenna Group, had an idea. H I N S D A L E L I V I N G    55

HL_0322_Main_SoftProof.indd 55

2/15/22 9:52 AM

“She knew we were looking for spaces with grandeur in a great location and this home fit the bill,” says Reem, explaining that even though the house was over a century old, it had been meticulously renovated by an investor. “The home’s brand-new bathrooms, and clean, white kitchen really impressed us. And, since we knew we wanted space for a pool, the nearly one-acre lot was very appealing.” The original plan was to do a walkthrough of the sprawling fivebedroom home and take notes that a builder could use to replicate a similar look and feel in a new construction. But by the time the tour ended, there was no turning back. They were beyond smitten—even Hesham, who famously told Reem before the showing he was only seeing the property to “humor her.” It was not only perfect; it was “just right.” “The moment we stepped into this home, both my husband and I agreed it reminded us of the flats in Paris or the homes on the Gold Coast in Chicago,” says Reem, adding that they almost thought it was “too good to be true” at first. “Since traveling to Paris a few times, I have gained a greater appreciation for homes like this. Lots of Hollywood movies are shot in homes like ours and I have always wanted to spend part of my life in something more historical—a place that stands apart from the rest.” That dream not only came true, but the Hassaballa’s story is now inspiring others. In addition to Reem’s blog and regular photo montages on her Instagram page @reems_design, the family’s interior design journey was the subject of a 10-page HGTV Magazine article last September. “The editor told me that it was one of the biggest spreads for a home ever,” she says. “They spent two days here, videotaping from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was definitely a very exciting moment.” Reem, who now also works as an interior stylist and was recently chosen as one of the featured designers for the Better Homes and Gardens One Room Challenge, says the home’s prestigious architectural pedigree and majestic finishes provided the ultimate canvas to build from. “It is a Prairie-Style home designed by architect George Maher, who was a colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright. In fact, they both worked in the same office,” she explains. “The home is filled with natural light, which can be enjoyed by a grand sunroom that was

added in the ‘90s. This natural light and the massive windows throughout the house are what really attracted us.” The couple also fell in love with the fireplaces—seven in total. “Two of the fireplaces on the first floor have the original mantel surround and they are vintage gems,” she says, adding that soon after moving into the home, she and Hesham realized what a solid investment it was, literally. “When we replaced all the windows in 2020, the contractor kept telling me that this house is just solid. It is a fortress.” As Reem proceeded to infuse her own eclectic modern style into the home’s décor, she began to appreciate the vintage details that should never change, even the quiet hum of the old radiators. “The character in this home would be so expensive to replicate. The molding, trim work, and doors are all solid wood. You can feel how heavy the doors are,” she says. “We have original hammered brass doorknobs and hinges, as well. All these things make this home so unique and one of a kind.” One of her first projects in the “new” house was to give her children, Lianna, Zac, Minna, and Sereen, bedrooms tailored to their own interests and hobbies. “My older daughters had a big say in how they wanted their rooms decorated,” she explains. For 11-year-old Lianna, who dreams of living in Hawaii someday, a boho look was achieved with floral decals (from Urbanwalls) and a rattan headboard from HomeGoods. Sereen, the 15-year-old, loved her old room so much she wanted to recreate it, down to the hanging chair from Anthropologie (and the same type of decals used in Lianna’s room). Twenty-year-old Minna’s room got similar decals and 9-year-old Zac’s room was given a one-of-a-kind makeover with a black shiplap wall for an adventure theme. “My kids truly love the home but are most impressed with our newly built pool. We have hosted birthday parties, yoga classes, team dinners, and baby showers out there,” she says, adding that her children also benefited from her recent One Room Challenge. “I decided it was time to improve their video gaming/teen lounge, so I worked with over 10 brands to really make this into a dream teen area. Now they love hanging in their own space down in the basement.”

That’s right. In addition to sharing her passion for interior design with friends and family, Reem has inadvertently become something of a social media influencer. “I always have found that decorating and styling come so naturally to me. I started my Instagram page in 2015 for fun to start posting about my home at that time. I did this just to document my design progress in my home and I soon found that people really liked and supported my page and my work,” says Reem, who now has 55,000 followers. “What happened then was that my neighbors would come to my house and beg me to help them with theirs. I decided to take a few neighbors up on their requests, and so I went over and helped them.” Soon, major brands began reaching out to Reem to enlist her help in promoting their items. “They loved the way I styled their products and soon, I found myself in over my head,” says Reem, who has worked with such brands as Hudson Valley Lighting, McGee & Co., Pottery Barn, and Cozy Earth Bedding. “I receive a ton of requests daily and I wish I could say ‘yes’ to everything, but the brand needs to suit my aesthetic.” One of her favorite things to do with interiors is to mix larger, more expensive pieces with lower-end accessories (or deals from places like HomeGoods). She is also sure to add a dash of vintage and personal items that make a space truly one of a kind. “Vintage items add so much interest and tell a story. This is what makes a house a home,” she adds. “A California-casual sense of style is what I love most. Rattan, cane, and raw woods create a very lived-in look. It helps the home feel less sterile and uber-modern.” While Reem does take on some interior design projects for friends and neighbors who reach out to her through her Instagram page, she’s trying to take it slow. “I would love to grow this into a major interior design or interior styling firm in the future. But, right now I am focusing on growing my portfolio a bit more,” she explains. “I have received so much recognition through my page. I have even been interviewed for a TV show.” The Hassaballa home was also the setting of a recent White Claw commercial. At the end of the day, for Reem, the focus always comes back to family—not fame. “I am so honored to have made a mark on one of Hinsdale’s gems,” she says. “And even if we don’t stay here forever, I can look back and say ‘I loved that home from my deepest core and I enhanced its beauty and character’.” You can follow Reem Hassaballa’s blog at reemsdesign. com or follow her on Instagram at @reems_design.

On Angel’s Wings A nonprofit foundation founded in honor of the Hassaballa’s daughter, Bayan, provides warm blankets for children in the hospital and supports research to find cures for Ataxia-Telangiectasia and Lymphoma. The center of Reem Hassaballa’s world has always been family. So, when she and husband, Hesham, lost their 13-year-old daughter, Bayan, to a debilitating disease called Ataxia-Telangiectasia (which caused her to get Lymphoma), it was beyond devastating. “She survived six months of chemotherapy until she lost her battle and passed in 2009,” explains Reem, who founded and serves as Executive Director of the Bayan Hassaballa Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to support the vital research into finding cures for AtaxiaTelangiectasia and Lymphoma. “Since coming to Hinsdale, I have started something called Blankets for Bayan, which has been a great success.” With a mission to “Paint The World Pink For Bayan,” the Bayan Hassaballa Foundation provides warm blankets for children (and adults) at Lurie Children’s at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital— where Bayan spent many days doing chemotherapy. “This community has been overwhelmingly supportive, and we can’t thank them enough for it,” says Reem. “We have received grants from some local companies that have helped us make more blankets and that have helped us give back to some of the amazing charities that helped Bayan, like St. Jude’s and Make-A-Wish Foundation.” Grants to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in honor of Bayan’s December 30 birthday (affectionally called “Bayan’s Birthday Gifts”) allow that organization to support other children the way it supported Bayan. “I hope to continue Painting The World Pink for Bayan through our foundation,” she adds. “I know she would absolutely love the idea of the blankets and that warms my heart.” For more information about the Bayan Hassaballa Foundation and how you can help, visit ourangelbayan.org.

Eclectic Elegance Local interior designer Aimee Sahlas transformed a Hinsdale home with a magnificent mix of cherished family heirlooms and dazzling designer originals. WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

Dining room

W

hen Hinsdale attorney Susan Slimack began working with Chicago area interior designer Aimee Sahlas to redecorate her family’s 1997 home, she knew she wanted a more modern, updated vibe. The interiors were very typical of the period, complete with Frank Lloyd Wright-style leaded glass windows. Slimack’s vision was to add much-needed definition to the open-space concept and tone down the “cookie cutter” architecture with custom furniture pieces and original works by local artisans. But that dream renovation wish-list came with a major caveat— the heirloom dining table and hutch needed to stay.

Some interior designers might have hesitated to take on that challenge. Sahlas embraced it. “I believe that incorporating heirlooms brings warmth to the home,” explains Slimack, who has worked with Sahlas over the last two years to elevate and upgrade her family’s dining room, eat-in kitchen, and den. “Some of my furniture pieces hold family memories that I cherish. Rather than encouraging me to put them in storage because they aren’t new, she listened to my connection with them and included them in her design.” Part of that may be due to Sahlas’ background as a prop and photo stylist. “I’m a designer but I’m also a visual storyteller,” she says. “Every

room should tell a story.” And that’s exactly what Sahlas set out to do with the project. The family’s vintage burl wood dining table with brass inlay and heirloom hutch (painted in Sherwin Williams “Greek Villa” high gloss) were paired with chic designer pieces to create truly eclectic spaces. “The table is gorgeous so it was fun to find things to complement it,” adds Sahlas, explaining that her Aimee Sahlas Design atelier commissioned several custom pieces for Slimack. “She also cares about independent artists, so we brought in some very unique touches.” In the dining room, for example, a bespoke, waterfall console table was commissioned from The CEH in a similar burl wood to match the heirloom. An acrylic and brass chandelier from John Richard illuminates the room’s other signature elements, including drapes by Schumacher in Del Tesoro print and a vintage MCM abstract scribble painting. A standout creation in the eat-in kitchen is an American ash clover table with gold streaking by Aronson Woodworks, a small mill in Iowa that uses already fallen ash trees to create gorgeous works of art. Its unique “CLAIZE” process uses multiple opaque paint colors to cover the surface while accentuating the natural grain. Sahlas paired that with dining chairs by Serena and Lily and other custom touches, including a designer vase by Jonathan Adler and built-ins by Len Builders. While the dining room and kitchen makeovers were a big success, Sahlas says if she had to choose a favorite part of the project, it would be the piano room—a new space she created by adding a wall to separate it from the den area. “Sometimes an open concept layout just doesn’t work. One thing I realized when working on this particular home was that

we needed to divide the spaces so they would be more functional. Otherwise, everything would just mishmash into each other,” she explains. “Our goal with the piano room project was to create something that would function as more than just a piano room.” Sahlas began the transformation with “Aztec” wallpaper by Chicago artist Erin Minkley’s Relativity Textiles, a chandelier by Arteriors, and a rug by Serena and Lily. The family’s now-painted, heirloom hutch has a place of honor in the room, accentuated by a Serena and Lily lamp, a basket from Jayson Home, and a plant from Seguin Garden Center. The result is a classic, yet elevated space that also functions as an elegant sitting room. As with other parts of the project, there are personal touches everywhere. “Conservation is important to her so we purchased a photograph of elephants from Render Loyalty, a company that does conservation with elephants in Africa. Every purchase of photographic art benefits that cause,” says Sahlas. “I love that she is willing to invest in quality pieces and things that have meaning.” However, because the Slimack family has two young boys, there were certain pieces they chose not to invest in, opting for practicality and durability instead. “Her fabrics had to be performance fabrics and the carpets weren’t top of the line,” Sahlas explains. “What we didn’t sacrifice is style.” Slimack agrees. “Aimee understands what it is like to have kids in the house,” she says. “She definitely pushed me toward items that were not only stylish, but are of quality so that they will stand the test of time with young ones,” While the design project is ongoing, Slimack says she could not be happier with the result, so far. “I love all the uniqueness that Aimee brought into our space. She took my memorable pieces and blended them with hers and my own decor style,” she adds. “Now, I feel like our home is anything but cookie-cutter.” For more information about Aimee Sahlas, visit aimeesahlas.com or follow her on Instagram at @aimeesahlasdesign.

Past trends you would like to see return? Trends come and go, and each of our projects is unique and tailormade for our clients. To accomplish that, we spend hours with each client personalizing every last detail. We see our style as enduring without focusing on what is in vogue. Trends on the horizon? We guide our clients to work on making their homes timeless by not cornering themselves into a traditional, transitional, or contemporary style. One trend that we do see developing further is a desire for outdoor living spaces. What was once reserved for more favorable year-round environments has now become something that almost every homeowner in any climate can enjoy thanks to new heating technologies. Favorite Mantra? “Measure twice, cut once.” We take deliberate care to look where others do not; execution always lies in the details. Most looking forward to in 2022? One of the things we are most excited about is our growing real estate division. Our focus has been on finding unique properties or land that allow us to create a one-of-a-kind Airoom masterpiece. Our newest project is an

8,000-square-foot luxury home sitting on a half-acre lot in Winnetka. It’s exciting because it lets us be creative on every level of the process. From design to construction, it’s 100 percent a product from the entire Airoom Team. Airoom is located at 6825 N. Lincoln Avenue in Lincolnwood. Jeremy Callarman and Miguel Hernandez, Front Door Specialists

TIM’S PROFESSIONAL PAINTING | “THE FRONT DOOR EXPERTS” “The front door is the first thing a guest sees when they arrive at your home. A beautiful door emulates both the character of a home and the care it receives by its homeowner,” says Tim Callarman, owner of Tim’s Professional Painting. The company has been well known for its top quality painting and workmanship for more than 36 years, and now their expanded front door restoration service—which preserves and restores high-end doors for longevity—is more important than ever. What sets you apart from your competition? Our customers tell us they appreciate our quality, workmanship, timeliness, and customer service. Best thing about 2021 was? Exterior home care was a top priority during the pandemic, and 2021 was the year we expanded our front door restoration service. Past trends you’d like to see return? I would encourage a pop of color against the standard grays in a bedroom, bath, or office space to draw people in and welcome them with cheer, drama, or a sense of calm and serenity. Trends on the horizon? Painted cabinets will continue to be a preference rather than purchasing new. Choosing a color, other than white, on island or bar cabinets seems to be on the rise.

Best advice ever given to you? Find a niche, like our door restoration services, and let people know about it. Best advice you’ve given? The first color you’re drawn to will typically the one you’ll choose. Don’t think too long or too hard. Where do you draw inspiration from? Color! A client’s home is a blank canvas that demands color to define it, inside and out. Each hue has something to offer. Favorite mantra? It’s all in the finish! BEST SUPPORTING SPOUSE

IN A LONG-TERM MARRIAGE WORDS BY BRENDAN HAMMER, PARTNER, SCHILLER DUCANTO & FLECK LLP PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

T

his month, the 94th annual Academy Awards, will take place. The popularity of the Oscars illuminates more than we know about how we view divorce. Although no court bestows an award for Best Supporting Spouse in a LongTerm Marriage —many people speak, think, or behave as if this is or should be a thing. We lawyers often hear about the years that our clients have spent deferring dreams, postponing advancement, taking care of the household, and rearing children. We learn of the decades of toil and labor. We discover the indignities endured and the accumulated slights, fights, silences, and betrayals. All of it is very much real and it deserves our compassion and empathy. But the “awards” that many of our clients seek for their endurance are beyond that which is compensable in dollars — and they constitute something that a court can never provide, and lawyers can never obtain. In divorce, quite often, people seek validation or vindication. And while we can write fault out of the statute, we cannot write it out of our minds, hearts, or souls. We are not (and perhaps never will be) any less a blaming, shaming, and guilt ascribing people than we were when warned against casting the first stone. These attributes that we seem imprinted with are, quite possibly, intrinsic to our humanity. When fault was banished from legislative legitimacy in divorce, it did not go away, it simply went underground like any banned substance, practice, idea, or movement. Fault continues to drive divorce, but because it is not recognized and has no formal outlet, it presents itself as many suppressed or repressed matters do––it comes forth unconsciously, finds a host, and latches on to what is available. It may drive positions on matters large and small in a case. Noting this all does not mean that fault should be restored. But it must be accounted for in how we approach divorce as both lawyers and as participants, in an emotionally intelligent and mature approach to litigation. Although I am a divorce lawyer, I am also a divorcé. My observations as a practitioner are also grounded in personal experience. In divorce we can often see our spouse as “winning.” This tendency comes from an impulse to view things as zero-sum propositions. Divorce is complicated from the start by what we bring to it, how we approach it, and what we ask of it. In divorce, lawyers can obtain financial and child-related results, but they cannot obtain these other things we often seek. Even with objectively good out-

comes, many clients still feel like they lost. They often sense that something is incomplete or missing. We can all, at times, conceive of our lives as a grand narrative, almost like a film or novel. We can come to view the marriage as a kind of story— with a beginning, middle, and end to which we must ascribe meaning. We feel a need to have our loss, pain, and suffering make sense and have a clear and concrete purpose. Like my clients going through it now, I know the thoughts, feelings and sensations that come with divorce — the confusion, anger, regret, bewilderment, and sorrow. Even in an amicable divorce, as mine was, the maelstrom of emotions can be overwhelming. As a former spouse — I know that tendency to seek out the elusive Award. While there will never be an award for time spent within a marriage as a spouse, understanding with clarity the real-world limitations of what any process can provide is critical to gaining greater self-awareness and equanimity and also to adjusting one’s expectations of that process to what is reasonably and fairly achievable. DINNER DATE RH Oak Brook

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD EATING RH’s new gallery in Oak Brook not only extends its streak of showrooms you’d be proud to call home; it marks the debut of the first RH Rooftop Restaurant and Wine Bar in the Chicago area.

W

hatever you do, don’t take the elevator. When you book dinner reservations at RH’s rooftop restaurant atop its new store in Oak Brook, you really want to take the stairs. They’re impossible to miss. Just look for the floating black-meets-brass double staircase—it’s grand enough to put Scarlett O’Hara’s little old stairwell to shame—and start climbing. It’s two floors up, but it’s worth the extra effort, even in 3-inch heels. We’ve certainly visited enough RH showrooms across the country to know they are the single most-pleasurable furniture showrooms to browse on the planet. Exploring the 60,000-square-foot RH showroom in Oak Brook is no exception. The vaulting cathedral-like ceilings. The moody chiaroscuro lighting. The artfully appointed furniture displays, so immaculately immersive you’d swear they are discrete movie sets on an old Hollywood film lot. The Oak Brook location is very RH. It looks, in short, like a modern-day Versailles. And yet, there’s something even more magical about ascending that stairwell at night. Maybe it’s the fact that the space’s designers have taken a page straight out of the Hogwarts School of Design. They’ve sheathed the entire ascending wall with as many Louis Philippe Gilt mirrors as could fit, not only refracting light but the streams of shoppers moving up and down the building. It almost feels, when night falls, that you’re ascending through a stagger-stepped tunnel of light toward the sky. It’s all very dramatic, very Gilded Age thanks to RH’s love for giant urns and

pottery. And then at long last you’re cast back toward an inky black sky, like an illuminated movie theater WORDS BY that goes dark for the main PETER AND KATE MICHAEL attraction. The RH Rooftop Restaurant and Wine Bar, as it’s formally called, is a glass-enclosed dining room in the sky. Twin Serenella chandeliers, looking like two golden upside down wedding cakes, float over the stairwell. A lion’s head fountain spews calming streams of water. And a gorgeous backlit bar boasting a centralized coffee station and a collection of 40 different wines, each offered by the glass. There’s always been something irresistible to us about shadowy restaurants where it’s difficult to determine where the outside ends and the dining room begins. As such, the restaurant is a culinary extension of the RH’s desire to build showrooms that feel more like palatial dream homes rather than retail outlets. You can thank the designer’s clever use of a charcoal gray Venetian plaster exterior for that optical allusion. The room itself is stenciled with green hedgerows and anchored by a central water fountain. It’s very Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in here, as if RH was able to elevate a moonlight park from Savannah or Charleston and bracketed it with glass and steel. Prior to our visit, I’m not sure I completely understood what RH’s chairman and CEO Gary Friedman meant, a while back, when he said RH Oak Brook would be “a reflection of a hierarchy that leads to harmony.” But I think I have a better idea what he

DINNER DATE means now. RH is fond of saying that its stores blur the lines between the indoors and outdoors and create a sense of balance and proportionality as often as possible. There certainly is harmony up here on the roof. You can feel a designer’s touch—a very human hand—in the creation of this space. It’s an atrium, whether consciously or unconsciously, that says, “You can do this too. If we built this skylight garden party in the sky—complete with olive trees and chandeliers that glow like candlelit amber—think of what you could do back at your house?” Perhaps it’s no coincidence, then, that the space not only marks the first rooftop restaurant in the Chicago area but also its first Interior Design Firm & Atelier, an interactive workspace that offers shoppers targeted advice. And thus you see the genius of pouring so much time and elegance into this restaurant. RH has built that two-way staircase for a reason. Guests are free to celebrate a new purchase by heading upstairs to enjoy a splendid meal in the sky. Or dine upstairs and be so swept away by the experience they’ll want to rush back downstairs and finally pull the trigger on that chandelier or sideboard they’ve been dreaming about. And make no mistake about it: The dining experience is splendid. You’ll definitely pay RH prices to enjoy it, but the menu is as well curated as it is compact. Not a single dish we tried disappointed, so should you decide that sixty-something dollar rib eye or twenty-plus dollar hamburger are within you’re price range, you won’t be disappointed. We were delighted, for instance, to discover just how much we enjoyed RH’s signature burger. It’s without question one of the tastiest in the western suburbs. It’s a double burger. American cheese. Pickles. Dijonnaise. Served on a fluffy, oversized brioche bun. Diners have the option to add avocado or thick-cut pork belly bacon for an extra fee. It may not sound that revolutionary on paper, but it’s a juicy handful. By the time you squeeze that pillowy bun and lift it to your lips, the cheese—slightly sharp with an incredible gooey melting point—will have already seeped into each craggy crevices of the burger. That’s one of the keys to a great burger. Can the kitchen get its timing just right, so that the sizzled, crispy exterior breaks and releasing its inner juices just as the cheese is hitting a semi-liquid state? The result here is as gooey as a Juicy Lucy with a richness that’s counterbalanced by the acidity of the pickles and the creamy undercurrent of the Dijonnaise. In many ways, the small size of the menu—there are only three non-sandwich entrees—is the inverse of the sprawling War and Shaved vegetables salad

Peace-sized catalogue of products RH is known for. The appetizer list—dubbed “for the table” on the menu—has been written to ensure the kitchen can turn around and send out a starter almost immediately after you’ve ordered it. Most of the apps are cold, and lean toward simple charcuterie

staples. Think Italian picnic or what you’d buy on a quick run to your local French boulangerie. There are prosciutto boards, served with our without a creamy hunk of a triple-cream Delice de Bourgogne cheese. And a burrata plate drizzled with aged balsamic and roasted peppers. There are no real surprises here, but the quality of the cheese and balsamic, plus the decision to pack sweet slices of basil between the charred peppers won us over. What can you say about something like RH’s arugula salads, other than they arrive piled so high with frilly greens that they look like they’re going to topple over and fall right off the plate at any moment. Lightly dressed with a vinaigrette, pumpkin seeds, and curls of Parmesan and fennel, it’s a four-season salad dappled with tiny globes sweet grapes. Both the 16 ounce rib-eyes and the perfectly prepared broiled honey-brown butter salmon are first rate, although they both come a la carte, requiring diners to pony up more money to pair them with steakhouse sides. For a more complete meal, the kitchen’s roasted chicken may be your best bet. It’s an incredibly juice half bird cooked with garlic confit and set over Joel Robuchon-style potato puree coated in a rich reduced gravy. It’s an incredibly rich yet elegant menu, one that pairs exceptionally well with a dining room worthy of the RH name.

RH Rooftop Restaurant and Wine Bar is located at Oakbrook Center, 1300 22nd Street, Oak Brook. For more information, call 630-572-0074 or visit rh.com/oakbrook/restaurant. H I N S D A L E L I V I N G    103

AMSTERDAM & BUDAPEST

Stroll the streets of two dynamic European capitals and enjoy historic and centrally located accommodations. WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

AMSTERDAM In the 17th century, The Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam emerged as one of the world’s most important centers of trade. With that came wealth and with wealth, a blossoming of culture and the city’s expansion. The Dutch masters thrived, producing some of the world’s most treasured masterpieces, while storybook row houses sprung up like Dutch tulips along winding canals.

Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam Hotel guest room royal suite living room with view of the Royal Palace

The city continues to be steeped in culture and retains the beautiful architecture of centuries past, but it also feels modern. Just beyond the historic facades, we found swanky hot spots and modern luxury. Our first encounter with a thoroughly modern Amsterdam took place while traveling from the airport to the city center. During this quick 25-minute ride, we spied massive glass structures lining the highway. Those occupying these glass houses? Many of today’s tech giants, including Google. I wasn’t expecting a modern landscape as an introduction to the historic capital, but it helped explain Amsterdam’s thoroughly hip vibe. This vibrant city is easily walkable (or bikeable). It possesses 165 idyllic canals flanked by fairy-tale gabled houses—some with a hint of tilt disclosing the dwelling’s marshy underpinnings. We spent many an afternoon strolling the cobblestone streets, crossing bridge after bridge in this charming city. Our favorite neighborhoods were De 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets) and Jordaan, both full of leafy canals, art galleries, boutiques, and cafés. You could spend years exploring these neighborhoods and not exhaust the possibilities of their quaint storefronts. Everything is very close, the only area requiring a bit of a walk from our hotel was Museum Square and Vondelpark, one of the city’s largest green spaces. The museums were worth the extra steps and the scenery en route can’t be beat (you’ll pass an Instagramworthy, canal-side flower market on the way). I promised my daughter this trip would be more of an “enjoy the city” adventure with fewer visits to churches and museums.

JOUR NEYS However, I could not pass up Rijksmuseum, an architectural treasure housing many of the Dutch masters’ work. We saw several Vermeer and Frans Hals masterpieces, but the museum’s most celebrated work is Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. The painting is breathtaking in scope and size. We popped in next door to The Van Gogh Museum established by Van Gogh’s nephew. This light-filled building showcases the short and tortured life of Vincent Van Gogh. The incredible breadth of Van Gogh’s work paints a portrait of the man himself, and you will glimpse the artist through the eyes of his family. Be sure not to miss The Rembrandt House Museum, home to many of his etchings, and The Anne Frank House. The latter is very popular amongst tourists, so reserve your tickets in advance. If you are going to visit several museums and attractions on your trip to Amsterdam, you may consider buying the I amsterdam City Card. It includes admission to a whole list of museums, sights, and a canal boat tour. This tour of Amsterdam’s UNESCO-protected canal ring is a delightful way to experience the city. As a home base, we chose the Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky located in the heart of the city and marrying historic significance with modern luxury. In 1865, Mr. Krasnapolsky, a charismatic Polish tailor, opened a tiny coffee house on the site that is now this grand hotel. Our spacious and modernly appointed Royal Suite offered glorious views of the National Monument, Dam Square, and the Royal Palace. As a nod to Mr. Krasnapolsky’s chosen trade, “The Tailor,” a beautiful indoor/outdoor cocktail bar located off the reception hall, offers tailor-made and bespoke cocktails. A perfect locale to relax after a day of sightseeing. We began our days feasting in The Wintergarden, a 19th-century glass-ceilinged courtyard, once the backdrop of a royal wedding. Just across the hall, lies The White Room. Here under the watchful eye of three-starred Michelin chef Jacob Jan Boerma, the restaurant showcases refined modern cuisine using only Netherland’s freshest ingredients in a historic setting. As we dined on the most splendid food in Amsterdam, I envisioned gallant guests of long ago. With all the walking, desserts are well deserved—the hotel boasts a resident chocolatier who creates decadent delicacies. Upon arrival, a chocolate Christmas stable was waiting for us in our suite—a signature Anantara touch. We found it almost too beautiful to eat, but the scent wore down our resolve. If you have time for a day trip, The Hague is only an hour away via train and the trip offers breathtaking views of the Dutch countryside. Be sure to visit Andrew Carnegie’s Peace Palace, the

Amsterdam’s storybook gabled houses along a canal

seat of the United Nations International Court of Justice, and the Mauritshuis museum, home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. We found The Netherlands utterly charming and look forward to a return. Recently, Amsterdam has sought to reshape its anything-goes reputation. The campaign has been a success; during our trip, we saw none of the raucous behavior sometimes associated with the Dutch capital’s red-light district and cannabis coffee shops. We loved every minute. Leaving Amsterdam we set our sights on another golden city, Budapest.

BUDAPEST Once Buda and Pest were separate cities on either side of the Danube. In 1873, Buda, Pest, and a third town, Obuda, were united to become Hungary’s capital city. The Buda side extends into the hills on the west bank of the Danube, crowned by Castle Hill. On the east, the former Pest lies in the lowlands and is home to the immense Parliament building. 1896 is the year to remember as most of the city’s buildings were erected for the city’s 1,000th-anniversary celebration. During Hungary’s millennial celebrations, the spirit of entrepreneurship, art, and literature was at its zenith. Throughout the city, you’ll find a treasure trove of architectural styles from that time including Baroque, Neoclassical, and Art Nouveau. We stayed on the Pest side in the beautifully renovated 5-star Neo-Baroque-style Anantara New York Palace, home to the famed New York Café and located just a quick 20-minute drive from the airport. The café boasts Belle Époque décor that has dazzled visitors for more than 120 years. Its frescoed ceilings, Venetian chandeliers, and gilded balustrades reflect the grand atmosphere of the Habsburg coffee houses. No wonder this landmark was a favorite of artists, writers, and aristocrats. The hotel is an ode to Europe’s Belle Époque period—a grand Amsterdam canal

Anantara NY Palace Budapest facade

marble façade adorned with ornate carvings features an impressive clock tower, while inside the lofty central courtyard/lobby is surrounded by open terraced floors reaching toward a vaulted glass ceiling – transporting you to the golden era in which it was built. Off the central lobby is the 100-year-old Poet Bar, overlooking the White Salon Restaurant. With its red-hued, intimate ambiance, it was the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail after a day of sightseeing. The 185 rooms and suites are accented by centuries-old art and antiques, Murano glass chandeliers, and sumptuous marble bathrooms. Our suite with its spectacular city views overlooked the bustling and elegant Erzsebet Korut, one of Budapest’s most important boulevards and one that would carry us to many sights. Budapest is an easily navigable city with plenty to see. A few musts are the Neogothic Parliament, an immense structure situated on the banks of the Danube. The world’s third-largest Parliament building is spectacular inside and out. It contains close to 700 interior rooms, ten courtyards, almost 100 statues of Hungarian rulers on its façade, and 12.5 miles of staircases. Be sure to book a tour to learn its history and to view King Steven’s crown jewels. During our visit, Budapest’s landmark Chain Bridge, the first permanent stone bridge connecting Buda and Pest, was under renovation so instead, we crossed the Margaret Bridge with its beautiful views of the Parliament and Castle Hill. En route to the Royal Palace, we stopped at Fisherman’s Bastion. This decorative fortification offers splendid panoramic views of Budapest. Its seven turreted towers symbolize the seven Hungarian chieftains who founded Hungary in 895. Leaving the site, you will come upon the 800-year-old Gothicstyle Matthias Church, the site of the coronation of two kings. A short walk away lies the Royal Palace; its grounds are home to beautiful fountains, gardens, and views of the city. Be sure to take the funicular back down the hill—this fan-favorite was originally built in 1870 as a way to ferry workers to and from the palace. On our walk back to the hotel, we stopped at the large indoor

market—yet another building built for the 1896 celebration. This vast space houses stall upon stall offering meats, cheeses, and of course, Hungarian Paprika, which you will find in all forms, sizes, and intensities. Famished from our day of touring, we booked an Anantara Spice Spoons experience. Overlooking the beautifully illuminated Parliament building, we feasted on traditional Hungarian fare at the Chef ’s Table. We sampled variations of hearty Hungarian breads slathered with a variety of spreads. Next, was a plethora of sausages and potato moodily. Then, we donned aprons and joined Chef Andras Wolf behind the grill to prepare langos, a traditional Hungarian street food. After mixing and kneading the pizza-crustlike dough, we fried this delicious treat and topped it with sour cream, grated cheese, and paprika. During the meal, we tasted various palinka, a traditional Hungarian fruit brandy, and ended on a sweet note sampling desserts made with traditional cottage cheese (a Hungarian favorite). On our last day, we headed in the opposite direction of Buda toward the 1896 fairgrounds. At the park’s threshold, is Hero Square, a large plaza bookended by the National Museum and the Palace of Exhibitions. Beyond the square, you will find a large city park, a zoo with fun Art Nouveau décor, and a “Transylvania castle” boasting a hodge-podge of architectural designs. Finally, we visited the famed Neo-Baroque Széchenyi Baths, Europe’s largest medicinal bath sourced by two thermal springs. For the perfect ending to our European escapade, we visited The New York Palace spa—beneath the hotel’s lobby lies an expansive spa housing steam rooms, saunas, a surreal swimming pool, and relaxation rooms. As we enjoyed a warm mud massage inspired by Budapest’s thermal bath heritage, memories of sights seen danced in our heads. This proved the perfect finishing touch to a fantastic visit. Pack your bags, European capital-style history and culture await. For more information, visit anantara.com.

Gin & Jazz Celebrating seven years and more than 7,000 patients pampered nationwide—supporters and socialites were in attendance for Simply From The Heart’s (SFTH) annual gala. The evening took place at Drury Lane in Oak Brook and included a silent auction, live music by the Kathern Lachey Band, a burlesque show by bimbamburly, and a speakeasy VIP lounge with third generation cigar roller Don Alejandro. Guests sipped on 1920s inspired cocktails sponsored by CH Distillery and hors d’oeuvres, all while they took in a floor performance by cancer survivor Eva Blaser and heard a beautiful testimonial by outpatient Juliana Torres and leading world-renowned Pediatric Hematologist oncologist Dr. Paul Kent, who has been standing behind SFTH’s mission since inception. One lucky winner walked away with a BMW motorcycle during this evening of charitable glam. From bedside to curbside, check out SFTH’s 1958 vintage Ford van—fittingly named “Kurbside” Step Van. For more dreamy updates, follow @hinsdalejwc on Instagram. The spirit that filled the room made for an aura that conveyed genuine compassion and love for this cause. sftheart.org

KASTLE KEEPER A white-glove, concierge senior management organization at your service. WORDS BY JANIS MVK

K

astle Keeper is the Western Suburb’s premiere professional concierge care organization for seniors. Specializing in what they call “senior crisis management,” Kastle Keeper assists families of senior citizens and independent older adults to age in place or transition into a senior living community. At the helm is Gina Knight, president of Kastle Keeper and founder and chairman of the National Aging In Place Council, Chicagoland. She is also a certified aging-in-place specialist. Throughout her 30 years in residential and commercial contracting, Knight discovered families’ need for assistance with their aging parents and relatives as they transition into different living circumstances. She often found herself becoming the single point of contact for all things related to the process. Now what’s grown into Kastle Keeper, she heads a team of professionals with services including creating an accessible home to age in place, multi-generational housing, prepping homes for sale, and determining what will accompany seniors to complete the setup of their new living space within a senior living community. “We always begin with a family consultation to determine where the senior should age in place,” Knight says. “It’s a misnomer that aging in place is only in the home.” Many communities offer aging-in-place options along with continuing care retirement communities. “The emphasis of aging in place became more prevalent for many especially during the pandemic,” Knight says. Through Kastle Keeper, aging in place at home is an option for seniors to live in their own homes for as long as they can. “It encompasses the ability to access any services that might be needed in the person’s chosen residence over time as needs change,” she says. Kastle Keeper provides a comprehensive certified assessment providing specialized contractors to immediately modify the home into a safe environment, including tidying-up services simplified into the concepts of keep, donate, sell, or share. Senior living communities continue to be an option for families who want to start in independent or assisted living, especially when the adult children are not local, and an extra set of eyes are needed. Even during the pandemic, families still had to make

Gina Knight

the difficult decision of transitioning relatives into senior living communities for safety reasons, especially those with health or cognitive challenges. Kastle Keeper helps evaluate the best living community for the family through partnerships with certified senior advisors. They provide the full, white-glove transition from start to finish including packing, procuring furnishings and home goods, physically moving, unpacking, and fully setting up the new home. “We work very closely with the family and the community to ensure every detail is taken care of for a smooth transition,” Knight says. In addition, the company has the capability to prepare the elder’s home for sale with all necessary repairs and updates along with selling the home for a complete all-inclusive approach. Life is more often filled with unexpected circumstances and the importance of what Kastle Keeper calls “senior crisis management” assists in navigating through this difficult time. There is no one-size-fits-all for a family to consider. Kastle Keeper develops a personalized plan based on the individual situation to make the transition easy. “We are trusted advisors and many times a voice of reason for the family,” Knight says. “Our success is always defined by the happiness, security, and safety of the seniors and their families.” Kastle Keeper is located at 1010 Jorie Boulevard in Oak Brook.
