The mom of two and clean skin care and beauty owner just expanded her business to brick and mortar in the city.
In The Preview we have some of the Chicago area’s most talented designers, who are taking part in Design Matters Kitchen Walk. Hosted by the Hinsdale Historical Society’s Women’s Board each year, this much-loved event is heading back inside and bringing design to the forefront. MONIKA JOSHI grew up splitting her time between Mumbai, India, and New York, before eventually settling in her husband Dhaval’s hometown of Chicago with their daughters, Jiya (14) and Reyna (10). The Hinsdale entrepreneur, who started her long career in investment banking in New York, recently opened her new brick and mortar store located at 958 W. Armitage Avenue in Chicago, for her eponymous natural and clean skin care brand—Art of Pure (artofpure.com). With the expansion of the brand from e-commerce to storefront, Joshi’s luxurious line added modern wellness, eco-friendly home goods, clean makeup, a soap refill station, and lifestyle products. “I’m working towards growing the brand into a multi-store, curated destination for natural and eco-friendly beauty and home products,” says Joshi. When she isn’t building her brand, Joshi loves to travel and volunteer with Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club. “I love to explore different countries and cultures—the food, languages, sights, shopping, all of it! You start appreciating the differences in the people you meet along the way and appreciating their way of life and things that they value,” she says. CONFRONTING PERSONALITY DISORDERS AND ADDICTION IN DIVORCE Karen Pinkert-Lieb of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP understands it takes a unique set of skills to successfully navigate divorce cases involving addiction, personality disorders, and high-conflict individuals. hroughout the course of her 30-plus years as one of Chicago’s leading and most respected family law attorneys, Karen Pinkert-Lieb has witnessed a surge in divorces caused by narcissistic personality disorders and addiction issues, often involving a party who lacks a formal diagnosis. Previously named Family Law Attorney of the Year in Illinois by Best Lawyers of America as well as the Top Woman Family Law Attorney in Illinois by Leading Lawyers Network, Pinkert-Lieb has evolved her practice to expertly handle these delicate cases. Pinkert-Lieb’s background in psychopathology and her depth of experience helps her identify disordered personality traits and addiction quickly and adapt her case strategy accordingly. Through client education, practical tools, involvement of mental health professionals, and the use of the mediators who are seasoned in handling high-conflict matters, Pinkert-Lieb can seamlessly guide her clients through what could otherwise be an expensive, protracted, and emotionally devasting divorce. “I educate my clients about co-parenting with someone with a personality disorder,” says Pinkert-Lieb. “You must be prepared and preemptive to address issues that may arise.” For example, clients must learn skills to create a type of emotional armor to protect themselves and their children. Communication styles should be specifically tailored to avoid additional conflict. The availability of a third-party arbiter to quickly resolve future parenting disputes is also beneficial. Pinkert-Lieb does not see her role ending as soon as a divorce is granted. Her goal is to have protections in place to ensure a successful outcome for the family well into the future. After many years of practice, it can be easy for an attorney to employ a cookie-cutter method, but that has never been PinkertLieb’s approach. “Each case is unique as are my client’s needs and priorities. My goal is to listen carefully and consistently to my client to ensure that I am guiding them toward a solution which is best suited for their specific goals.” Pinkert-Lieb and her client function as a team during the divorce process. “My style is focused on client preparation, communication, and client-involved strategy and decision-making. Often my clients have been subject to long-term gas-lighting and manipulation by his or her spouse. This can result in self-doubt and fear. My job is to help my clients rediscover their confidence and voice.”

While Pinkert-Lieb earned a reputation as a fierce litigator during the first twenty years of her practice, today, seventy percent of her practice is dedicated to alternative dispute resolution such as mediation. “I’ve litigated high-conflict cases that have been expensive and have been bounced around the system. While the adversarial system may be fine for dissolving business disputes, it is unsuitable for families, particularly parents who will have a continued relationship because of their children. Moreover, the court system only seeks to embolden a high-conflict party, who now has an audience for his or her narrative,” says Pinkert-Lieb. “Mediation is infinitely better for the family.” What is remarkable is Pinkert-Lieb came to this realization well before many lawyers in the field were advocating for alternative dispute resolution. “We immediately loved the idea,” says Bridget Nagel, Managing Co-chair. “The theme allows for our benefit team to play with fresh color schemes, exciting music, and different experiences for guests that we have not done in the past.” And with such a fun concept in place, the creative ideas poured in. “Think gourmet festival food, flower crowns, desert floral colors, and sophisticated glitter makeup,” says Tuthill. “Unlike a traditional black-tie gala, the GIVEchella theme lends itself to allowing guests to have more flexibility on their outfits,” says Nagel. “We really want our guests to have fun and be creative with the upscale festival theme.” To assist with this, in the months leading up to the gala, the club will be partnering with local boutiques to help showcase ready-to-buy ideas of GIVEchella-themed outfits. As for the gala in of itself, guests can expect a full GIVEchella experience complete with music from an electric violinist and DJ—KAT V. “There will be opportunities to purchase boutique flower crowns and professional glitter makeup to complete your outfit, tarot-card readings, an insane floral photo-op station, surprise performances, and more,” says Alicia O’Brien, Managing Co-chair, and the brains behind the theme. There will also be an auction for guests to participate in and there will be access to a VIP space, just like the music and art festival.

he Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) is redefining its annual fundraising gala with a brand-new theme titled, GIVEchella. The gala, taking place on April 9 from 7 to 11 p.m., will be held at Theater on the Lake in downtown Chicago, where the club will raise funds to directly support nonprofit grants. This year’s theme was revealed at Illinois Harley-Davidson last October when eight benefit co-chairs made a grand entrance riding in on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. To continue the fun, the club put together what will be a memorable night to experience with inspiration from Coachella, the music-and-art festival set in California’s desert. “Alicia O’Brien, one of the managing co-chairs, came up with the idea of an upscale, festival-inspired theme for this year’s benefit,” says Stephanie Tuthill, Managing Co-chair.
“We really want our guests to have fun and be creative with the upscale festival theme.” Last year, including the benefit, the club raised over $300,000 which was awarded to 27 recipients including nonprofits such as Center for Independence, Reclaim 13, Share Our Spare, WINGS Program, Green Halo Scholars, People’s Music School, Simply from the Heart, Sharing Connections, The Home 2 Home Project, and Wellness House. This year the club hopes to support even more, especially with COVID-19 restrictions starting to lift. The gala is expected to bring in more than 400 HJWC members and attendees. “We are most excited for our guests to enjoy a unique and fun night out, all while supporting local organizations,” says O’Brien. The funds raised from GIVEchella including ticket sales, auction items, and event-experience enhancements, will go directly to support nonprofit grants for deserving Chicago area nonprofit organizations. Tickets are on sale now along with the option to purchase premium add-ons. R
ecently, I needed a new barber and so I asked for recommendations. I also looked online for people with strong reviews. The gentleman I went to was amiable, professional, and highly recommended. But the experience just wasn’t great. We didn’t exactly hit it off, the conversations were stilted, and the cut was a bit underwhelming to be honest. It might sound absurd, but I don’t think he understood what I really wanted. I had to ditch this decent but lackluster barber and I now go to someone who makes it seem like he’s been cutting my hair since childhood. Many people find lawyers the same way they try out restaurants, hotels, hair stylists, dentists, designers, and trainers—on the basis of a recommendation. Typically, a neighbor, family member, friend, colleague, or parent from school passes along a name. And we take those recommendations on a kind of faith. With lawyers, we may interview the person and ask some questions, but we are relying heavily on the experience and validation of a third party. That experience of our acquaintance was a function of many unique factors, not all of them rational, not all of them generally applicable, and many of them not applicable to our own specific circumstances, finances, personalities or needs. In divorce, certain attributes are necessary for a lawyer—but they are not all sufficient for the client. At a minimum, a good family law attorney should be experienced, knowledgeable, creative, and professionally well regarded. But in a divorce or custody case, you are entrusting everything you value to a third party. Your financial future and the future of your children are all on the line. It is both a legal and emotional process. You will spend countless hours emailing, talking, and on Zoom with the lawyer. She or he will come to know more about you and your family than almost anyone who is not a family member, close friend, or therapist. The relationship between an attorney and a client, therefore, is a critical one. Unfortunately, it can be very hard to tell whether your lawyer will be a good fit. If I have any advice for people contemplating the services of a matrimonial law attorney, it is do your homework and also pay close attention to your communication. Obtain as much data as possible from as many sources as possible. The experiences of others are not irrelevant, they are simply insufficient. Next, the initial consultation should be an opportunity for you to learn as much about your potential attorney as it is for that professional to learn about you and your case. Does the lawyer interrupt?
Demonstrate understanding? Ask follow-up questions or probe for understanding and context? Does the lawyer talk only about himself or herself? Do you hear only war stories and accolades? Do you feel you are being lectured? Does the person tell you only what you want to hear? Does the lawyer over-confidently tell you time frames, dollar amounts, and outcomes without having detailed facts? Are you being “sold” on the lawyer or are you learning what it would be like to work with him or her? Can the lawyer explain things in a way that you understand? At root, do you feel like you want to spend a year of your life working closely with this person? Critically, and if so, will this person be your primary interface or will another Partner or an Associate be assigned to serve that role? Will the lawyer personally handle your matter in court or in mediation? If not, why not? Most importantly, what is the level of emotional intelligence that she or he demonstrates in talking to you? It can be hard to process all of these potentially relevant data points in the conference and maybe a follow up chat is needed. Do not feel embarrassed about asking for one or even in explaining what concerns or questions you have. There are many family law attorneys and it can be hard to find the person best suited to represent you. We are all unique and each have emphases, outlooks, philosophies, and approaches that differentiate us from our peers in the law. For almost all of us, before we met our spouse or partner, we dated other people. We were finding the right fit. We did not simply rely on the “reviews” of our spouse’s former romantic intimates. Similarly, we should not think twice about consulting a wide array of lawyers before “committing” to one. In the end, you must feel comfortable, secure, and confident that you are in good hands and also that the person you retain will be able to work with and for you, constructively, collegially, and creatively. he Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board is hosting its 17th annual Kitchen Walk with a new theme along with brand new elements. This year’s Kitchen Walk: Design Matters, is on May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ticket holders can tour the first floors of five of the most prestigious homes in Hinsdale while supporting the Hinsdale Historical Society with continued fundraising efforts at Immanuel Hall. Unlike last year where guests toured backyards and patios of the featured homes, this year’s walk takes it back inside to the kitchens serving up a new element: meeting the interior designers responsible for the designs behind the doors. “Kitchen Walk will be returning back to its original format this year now that local restrictions related to the pandemic are lifted,” says Lauren Kavanaugh, Co-Chair. “Attendees will again be able to go inside the homes on the tour and walk through the first floor to soak in its design elements and enjoy sips and bites, as traditionally done each year.”

omeone whispers the word “tapas” and you think what? Salted anchovies and bacon-wrapped dates? Toothpicks and cute little terra cotta platters? Or that trip to Barcelona—Lord, who could forget it?—when you evaded that creepy looking mime (dressed up to look like ghost of Salvador Dali) by ducking into a bar just off Las Ramblas and enjoying a Spanish feast for the ages? Ask the same question of Billy Bothell, the executive chef of the recently reopened El Tapeo in Oak Brook, and his thoughts will gravitate to a discrete set of sounds. Chuckles and dinnertime chatter. Silverware scraping dishes clean and plates being pushed across wooden tables to invite sharing. For Bothell, tapas aren’t just Spain’s greatest contribution to the culinary arts. He sees them as the world’s most effective ice breakers: tiny, intensely flavored conversation starters that can help us all—in their own tiny, delicious ways—recover from the chaos of the last two years. If his team, working in the Le Meridien in Oak Brook, does their job well, they’ll be able to hear the fruits of their labors. One-syllable affirmations from the dining room should bleed right through the walls. The yums. The hmms. The wows. All punctuated by voices imploring others to “try this and this and this.” “If we can cook food that helps people put their phones down, we’ll have done our job,” says Bothell. Gambas
Bothell was hired to oversee El Tapeo’s kitchen in late 2019, shortly before COVID-19 restrictions caused a temporarily shutdown. Thus, Bothell, who arrives here after a stint cooking for local sports teams has had ample time to devise a creative menu. “We offer a lot of the classics,” he says, “But we wanted to evolve, too. We wanted to offer diners things that were a little more modern as well.” Bothell attaches simple one-word names to most of his offerings. Order El Tapeo’s “gambas” and a ceramic serving vessel will be presented. Its lid will be affixed so your server can lift it up with great drama, releasing an aromatic cloud of sweet, sautéed garlic and spicy saffron notes into the air. The shrimp inside will be immaculately tender, having been steeped in a whitewine broth studded with diced tomatoes. His maize course is just as cute. Two quartered ears of corn—striped, tiger-like, with black char marks—arrive smeared with aioli. “When I sit down to create a new dish,” says Bothell, Branzino “I rarely start with a protein.” Bothell is more interested in the supporting flavors— the character actors of any professional kitchen—and building dishes around their distinctive colors, textures and flavors. He’s recently, for example, been experimenting with squid ink. He baked a
quick cake and then stained it with the ink, creating a frilly sponge-like creation that resembles coral. And that got him thinking: Spain. The Atlantic Ocean. Seafood. Why not create a small plate that acted as an homage to scuba diving or felt like you were peering into a tiny
aquarium? He applies tiny quenelles of caviar atop thinly sliced black-rimmed radishes. Then bakes a tuille out of saffron until it looked like a golden fish net. At long last he nestles small butter-poached nuggets of lobster at the bottom of the bowl, like buried treasure that had sunk to the bottom of the sea. Although everyone around us seemed to order the mini paella pans, I’d argue our favorite dish was the house’s full branzino, which was cooked the way Spaniards would prepare it back home. Bones in. head on. Packed with some greens and fennel. We picked it clean, recounting tall tales of previous fishing expeditions and cherished memories of vacations long passed, content in the knowledge that Bothell had, indeed, given us plenty to talk about.

Golden Goddess:
You might assume that a cocktail made with gin, apple puree, and muddled bits of golden kiwi would be better suited for a tiki bar than a tapas spot, but this fruit-forward cooler acts as a spritely counterbalance to all the acidity and rich flavors of El Tapeo’s menu.

Sleek, wood-paneled walls, natural stone, pastel tiles, a freestanding soaking tub and waterfall shower—all framed by tropical gardens—set the tone for total relaxation. Expansive sliding glass doors offer a seamless indoor/outdoor experience with an ocean view to inspire your yoga practice or hours of curling up with your favorite vacation novel. Casitas are situated on the front row of a 60foot cliff, each with unobstructed views of the Caribbean. This nothing more relaxing than falling asleep and waking to the sounds of the waves each day. When I reminisce on my experience at Amanera, several wonderful memories come to mind. I left feeling transformed by the warmth of the sun, the rich soul of the Dominican people, and an elegance of design and architectural appointment. Never was a detail missed or unanticipated by the staff; not a minute left me without beauty and peace. It was an experience fit for royalty yet as humble and comforting as a warm, sincere smile. limpse Vision was born in Hinsdale five years ago out of its founders’ desire to provide personal service and hand-selected frame options. Coming from an industry that had gone through consolidation, they wanted to start and grow a company based on building relationships with clients. “Our business has always been focused on client-first and being available when they need us—personalized service,” says Boyce Moffitt, co-founder of Glimpse Vision and a Dispensing Optician for more than two decades. “To be able to survive through COVID-19 meant that we had to really cultivate relationships with our customers.” One of the advantages of running an independently owned eyewear company is that the company can also develop relationships with frame designers who couldn’t or wouldn’t provide frames to large conglomerates. “We treat our relationships with our frame designers just like we treat our relationships with our clients. Because we’ve done that for years, a lot of times new designers will come directly to us,” Moffitt says. “We’ll often seek to bring things to the market before anybody else. We have that kind of access.” “We’re very aware of what’s going on in the industry and what the trends are,” says Dory Kenna, Glimpse co-founder and partner. “Larger corporations can’t offer individual styles that are different between all of the many designers they represent. We really work hard to make sure that we are offering a lot of different options.”
Kenna says Glimpse will often work directly with designers to bring a more unique and diverse selection to customers. Bigger chains or online businesses often do not have this flexibility. The quality of the product is different when it’s handmade, Moffitt says. Many frames that Glimpse offers are designed by opticians versus designers of labels, opticians who know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to construction of a frame. In addition to consolidation—which continues to today—the eyewear industry has changed considerably with the growth of the online option for people to purchase eyewear. Moffitt sees that as more of an opportunity than a threat. “The online business has really opened the doors for independent businesses like us because a lot of designers can’t deliver an online product or don’t want to,” he says. “The online growth and the consolidation of the eyewear business has been a big challenge, but it is part of the reason we exist.” This freedom to operate independently has been the foundation of Glimpse’s success the past five years and the company is well positioned for the next five and beyond. “We didn’t want to be part of a big guy. We wanted the independence of being able to provide a service and meet a client where they feel like things are important,” Moffitt says. “Some people don’t mind shopping online from a convenience perspective, but some people also want a lot of attention to detail.” Glimpse Vision is located at 12 East 1st Street in Hinsdale, 630-325-2020, glimpsevision.com.
