PUBLISHER’S NOTE
T
here is much to celebrate this month, including all of those women who do so much for many. I was pleased to attend a recent event hosted by Hindman Auctions CEO Jay Krehbiel to celebrate the female cultural leaders featured in the April issue of our sister publication, Sheridan Road. The women included AIC Trustee Board chair Denise Gardner, CSO past and present Trustee Board chairs Helen Zell and Mary Louise Gorno, Field Museum Women’s Board chair Sandra Deromedi, Joffrey Board Chair Anne Kaplan, Lyric Board Chair Sylvia Markowicz Neil, and MCA Chicago Trustee Board Chair Cari Sacks. Michelinstarred chef Jenner Tomaska of Esmé Chicago dazzled guests with edible art inspired by works hanging in the Hindman gallery. David Hockney’s Lithograph of Water Made of Lines inspired the first course, a brightly colored Wadsworth Jarrell acted as muse for the main course, and Renoir’s La Baie de Villefranchesur-Mer influenced the sweet finale. The collective celebration of these seven women and six institutions created a joyous atmosphere of unified camaraderie that permeated the evening. Moving on to our May issue of Hinsdale Living, I’d also like to welcome our new Managing Editor, Michelle Crowe. This Hinsdale Central High School alumna has deep ties to the community and an impressive background in the magazine industry. One of her first jobs was working in the fashion department of New York Magazine (where she assisted the former accessories director and creative director of Vogue). Crowe, who has returned to Hinsdale to raise her family, also spent some time in Houston, where she worked briefly as a design editor for the Houston Chronicle and senior style writer at PaperCity magazine. Back in the Chicago area, she has written
for the Chicago Tribune and even this magazine, Hinsdale Living, in 2012. I am pleased to have her back and excited about the May issue before us. In the pages ahead, we learn more about the hard work the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation board has been doing to raise money for upgrades to the NICU. This $15 million initiative includes adding private rooms and renovating both levels of the unit. We’d like to give a special thank you to Kari Galassi, Shana Robertson, and Katherine Karvelas for leading this important fundraising endeavor. We were delighted to speak with Jill Giglio, who lives in Hinsdale with her husband Ozzie and their 4-year-old twins. Giglio is a kindhearted dynamo who built a vast collection of Harley Davidson dealerships with Ozzie while he served in high-level roles in the Navy. We applaud her support of him as he continues to serve our country. Other highlights to look for include a Journeys feature about Colorado’s family-friendly Vista Verde Ranch and a Country vs. Town spotlight on Hinsdale mom and artist Molly Haworth. This month also marks Hinsdale Restaurant Week (May 13 through 22) so be sure to patronize our local restaurants—including Za Za’s in Clarendon Hills, which we feature in our Dinner Date section. As always, our Publisher’s Profiles bring the best local businesses directly to your door. This month we connect with Academic Approach, and Mike McCurry of Compass Real Estate and encourage you to do the same. Enjoy the pictures, and good reading. J.W. Conatser

ewelry is more than just a dazzling accessory for ones’ outfits—it is also full of stories celebrating important milestones and capturing cherished family memories. So often it is symbolic, acting as a little celebration of who we are. As a specialist in Hindman’s Jewelry & Watches Department, I have the privilege to hear so many clients reminisce as they unveil their jewelry boxes and consider what they might be willing to put “under the hammer.” I have always loved jewelry for as long as I can remember and have been fascinated by the idea of jewelry as a form of adornment. Growing up in Australia with two sisters, there was great feminine energy in our home, and jewelry and fashion were always keenly discussed topics.
I became increasingly captivated by jewelry when I moved to New York City. I first worked as an assistant to a Broadway director but quickly felt myself being lured into the jewelry industry and all things sparkly. I achieved my GG (Graduate Gemology) diploma from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), and from there, I found myself on Madison Avenue working alongside renowned diamond houses. It was a magical experience—I was absolutely in my element handling the most extraordinary gemstones. Now I’ve landed on the North Shore of Chicago and have been living here for almost 10 years. I have found my jewelry niche working as a specialist at Hindman. The auction world is so thrilling—after all my last name is Hammer, so it is absolutely where I am meant to be. In my role as a jewelry specialist, I often get questions about why one would want to buy or sell at auction. Auctions truly give new life to jewelry, offering bidders the rare chance to snag an amazing item that they will not find anywhere else, not even at an established jeweler. In the same vein, when you sell an item at auction, the sky is truly the limit. The excitement of one-ofa-kind pieces being offered drives prices far beyond expectations, as bidders fiercely compete against one another to place that winning bid. At Hindman, I get to work with so many different, astonishing jewels, from Burmese ruby bracelets to sapphire and emerald rings. We have some exquisite pieces featured in our upcoming May “Important Jewelry Sale.” I especially love the Art Deco pieces made in platinum with aquamarines and diamonds. Also, with green being my favorite color, I always seem to gravitate toward the “pop” of vivid color when an emerald is nestled between diamonds, and Hindman has some particularly stunning emerald rings on offer. And, a pair of ruby and diamond earrings is striking, perfect for a sophisticated evening out. Buying at an auction is the optimal route if you want to treat yourself or are looking for a unique gift that is sure to win anyone over. If you love the new trend of yellow gold jewelry with an ’80s flair, we’ll have it. If you love the classics like diamond tennis bracelets and diamond studs, we’ll be offering those too. Above all, it is truly a special and exciting experience to buy and sell jewelry at auction. I frequently feel like a treasure hunter because something brilliant is always just around the corner ready to be discovered and given new life by the lucky, winning bidder. The Jewelry & Watches department will present a live and online auction on May 17, with bidding beginning at 10 a.m., hindmanauctions. com/auctions/1029-important-jewelry. Bidding is available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room, bid.hindmanauctions.com or the Hindman app. The jewelry will be available for preview from May 11 to 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 15 from noon to 3 p.m., and May 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Karina Hammer, G.G. at 312-280-1212 or karinahammer@ hindmanauctions.com.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN MOLLY HAWORTH grew up in Indiana, where her dad owned his own business, and her mother created a home where artistic and crafty pursuits were encouraged. Following the lead of her mother and grandmother, Molly became very interested in the arts in her school days. “During the day I took as many art electives as I could. After school if I wasn’t taking an art or a dance class, I was teaching one,” she says. Art School led to a career as a visual manager for Marshall Field and Co. and Saks Fifth Avenue. With two boys and nearly 20 years in Chicago, Molly and her husband decided it was time to move to the suburbs. “I loved the feeling of Hinsdale,” she says. The Haworth family has been here for eight years now, with an impromptu expat adventure to London when the boys, Everett (13) and Landen (12) were in fourth and second grades. Molly has been a member of Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club, overseeing the look and décor of the benefit. She is involved with the Hinsdale Historical Society and The D181 Foundation. Molly’s love of art has led to a vibrant business, Little Blueprints Art Studio. She teaches all mediums; watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil, embroidery, clay, collage and sewing. “My favorite has always been colored pencil,” Molly says. Here are some of her favorites in the country and on the town. EDITED BY MICHELLE CROWE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST Mantra? Stay creative. Best grooming tip? Coconut oil hair mask once a week. Guilty pleasure? My two Burmese cats, Valentino and Francesco. I call them my art mascots. Early memory? Making things with mom and grandma, like sewing clothes for my dolls. Music you love? Nathanial Rateliff is the perfect background music for playing sous chef while my husband cooks. Advice you would give to your younger self? Pay attention to the things you love to do, they are leading you somewhere amazing.
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY Your style is? Laid back, mostly jeans and t-shirt with chunky boots. Can’t leave the house without? Lipstick. Place to eat? Fuller House Shop? Boutiques around town. The visual artist in me loves seeing the displays. Best thing about the country? The support of friends and parents in this community is amazing and I’m so grateful. Worst thing about the country? My husband doesn’t love commuting. The perfect day is? Planning out a new art project for my classes, reorganizing something around the house, teasing my teens while watching a movie with the cats on our laps and a glass of wine in hand.
WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? I might add a blazer and fabulous sunglasses to my jeans, t-shirt, and boots. Can’t leave the house without? Sunscreen and lipstick. Place to eat? My husband and I like to check out new breweries when we have the chance. Shop? I might swing by my old stomping grounds of Saks and the other Michigan Avenue stores. Best thing about town? There’s so much creative energy. Worst thing about town? Traffic. The perfect day is? Vintage shopping, a chat with my mom and checking out an art exhibit at one of the museums. Vintage Shopping

Advice from Kris Berger Group TO BUYERS - Choose a Realtor who is both experienced and entrenched in the towns you are searching in. With the insufficiency in supply and the high demand, sellers are experiencing various offers. Therefore buyers must be 100% prepared to make an offer immediately. Therefore, have your financing approved and work closely with an experienced agent who knows the ins and outs of what’s coming soon to the private listing market and what is the fair market value. TO SELLERS - Real-time showings occur online more frequently. Make sure to choose a Realtor who is familiar with various digital marketing tools; it is an intrical part of a successful home selling strategy. Make sure you’re choosing a Realtor like me, who provides premium photography, 3-D home tours, floorplans, e-brochures, professional video, staging help and advice and a strong sphere of influence within my network. But more importantly, a Realtor who has a resource like Compass at their disposal. Compass is a technology driven company providing the best and most innovative digital marketing in the industry. ON CHOOSING AN AGENT If you’re looking to buy or sell this year why not use: • • • •

You need an agent like me who uses my strong networking skills and sphere of influence (which includes a sphere of over 14,000 Realtors and 3,000 former clients and contacts), staging and design background, and the intelligent digital marketing tools Compass has to offer, driving traffic to your property or finding you the right house!

KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM: PULLING THE PLUG IN MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE MATTERS WORDS BY BRENDAN HAMMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
W
henever I was trying too hard to get something wrong to turn right as a child, my grandfather used to tell me: “when you’re in a ditch, stop digging.” Although he was a rancher who never went to college – this pithy locution was consistent with what behavioral science has since taught us. We are all susceptible to falling prey to the cognitive bias of what is termed the Sunk Cost Fallacy. In innumerable ways, we tend to double down on an investment, relationship, exercise or endeavor whenever we have allocated effort, emotion, time or money to it. We do this regardless of whether current and ongoing “costs” will outweigh actual benefits. In doing so, we tend to ignore evidence and data points that indicate we should cut our proverbial bait. A sunk cost, is quite literally, that which has been incurred and is not susceptible to recovery. It is gone. And yet, our minds tend to treat those expenditures of dollars, time or effort as if they were recoverable. Acting from a more rational position, we would accept that the milk was spilled and we would take into account only future costs against future benefits. Some posit that our persistent inability to avoid sunk cost fallacies stems from our seemingly inherent aversion to loss – the state of mind where losses are felt to a greater extent than gains. In other words, we feel the loss $1,000 more acutely than we do the gain of $1,000. From our loss aversion, we can often spend money on a number of forms of insurance that are irrational to purchase. We can also avoid, out of fear, taking certain risks that make objective sense. Because our human minds are highly supple and subject to influence, we can also fail to assess options through what is called the “decoy effect” – a notion related to loss aversion. When we pick between options behind Door #1 and Door #2, the addition of a demonstrably inferior option behind Door #3 compared to Door #1, that is also slightly inferior to Door #2, can have profound impact on our choice in ways that are not conscious to us. Advertising, marketing, pricing and product placement rely on decoys all the time. They are consciously deployed not to get us to choose the decoy, but to actually choose a certain desired target. Unconsciously, in dating or political markets, inadvertent decoys can “nudge” or frame our analytic assessments of the options. Ultimately, the decoys we face effect our choices and give us a means to rationalize decisions that are otherwise irrational. As a divorce lawyer and divorced parent, I see these themes play out in myriad ways almost daily, in the uniquely charged and psychologically fraught arena of a relationship that is ending both
legally and emotionally. Too often, issues arise because choices and their timing was or is off. Whether it is a potential client choosing an attorney initially or as replacement counsel, a spouse navigating the process of deciding whether to divorce (and/or what process to utilize), or a party managing the analysis of whether to remain in a deadlocked mediation or alternative dispute resolution – the sunk cost fallacy and related concepts inevitably arise. Lawyers are no less immune to the problem, unfortunately. Whether in litigation or mediation, the emotionally intelligent attorney must always reflect upon whether a particular strategy or tactic is being employed because it makes sense or because we are doubling down on a pet theory, claim or approach. Like many professionals, lawyers can suffer the curse of getting “high on our own supply.” It can be as challenging to unpack our own motivations, drives and desires in a case as it is for our clients to do so in their divorce. It is difficult to weigh hard decisions objectively from a place of reason, especially at a time when feelings are strong. And, of course, the thing that makes us unique as a species is that we are not uber-rational automatons making decisions based on a balance sheet, algorithm or scientific formula. We love and sympathize, we feel regret, vengefulness and anger, and we are always and already instinctive and emotional beings with egos. We can never and should never attempt to exorcise that basic emotive core either as practitioners or participants. Instead, in matters large and small, and especially where divorce and marriage are involved, we should aim for more modest ends: namely, to challenge ourselves critically, personally and professionally, to look at the issues involved clearly, transparently and logically – with our heads no less than our hearts. And in doing so, we must be prepared and willing to let go, modify, or reconfigure our plans, communications, strategy or tactics when appropriate. insdale’s Jill Giglio positively lights up a room when she enters. Her bright eyes match the lovely smile that rarely leaves her face. After an initial warm greeting, one immediately wants to become fast friends with this woman. As the conversation unfolds, this feeling only grows, as Jill reveals bits of her unexpected, utterly glorious life as a military spouse, mother, philanthropist, and pioneering female motorcycle dealership owner. Jill met her husband of more than 20 years at The Lantern in Naperville. Both were established professionals. She, as leader in marketing and sales. Anthony “Ozzie” Giglio, as an attorney, venture capitalist and Naval Reserve Commander in a special operations group dealing in counterintelligence and counter terrorism. After that afternoon, each knew they’d found the person with whom they wanted to travel through life. “We walked each other down the aisle,” which was so beautiful, says Jill, who adds, “We left the reception on a motorcycle with a parade of flag-bearing motorcycles following us. It was very much like An Officer and a Gentleman.” That cavalcade foreshadowed the empire to come. Ozzie suggested buying their first Harley Davidson dealership in early 2001. When the whole world changed following the terrorist attacks of September 11, Ozzie was often deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan or working closely with Pentagon leadership. Jill was running the dealership. “There were really no other women owners at that time. Customers would ask to speak with the owner and wouldn’t believe me when replied that I was the owner,” she says. Jill explains that making sure the dealership was successful became her mission while Ozzie fulfilled his. “Our whole philosophy is to provide great customer service with a smile and the spirit of kindness. If you do that, people can get used to the idea of a woman owning motorcycle dealerships,” Jill says. Today Windy City Motor Company owns 15 dealerships, most
of them purchased as underperforming and transformed with the philosophy of serving with kindness and smiles. In 2013, Jill and Ozzie moved from Wheaton to Hinsdale. In true Giglio family tradition, they closed on their new home, walked in for the first time as owners, and 20 minutes later a car pulled up to take Ozzie for another deployment. Jill carried on beautifully. “I have the strength to go weeks without speaking to my husband, even though we missed each other terribly. He would sometimes go on another deployment so that someone else could go home.” Always philanthropic, Jill and Ozzie dialed up their giving following two monumental medical events in 2016. Ozzie was diagnosed with stage four head and neck cancer and after a long, painful struggle, Jill was pregnant with twins. “We stopped and evaluated what is really important to us,” says Jill. Thanks to an incredible team and with Jill by his side, Ozzie beat cancer. Jill delivered Jorie and Ronin. “We now live with a greater sense of purpose,” says Jill. The couple have donated $500,000 to the University of Chicago Head and Neck Cancer Center. They have made a similar donation to Columbia University in New York. As a family of four, the Giglios met more people in town and the small town feeling that initially attracted them to Hinsdale grew. Jill is a member of a book club and Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC). She hosted HJWC at Illinois Harley Davidson to announce the theme of their 2022 benefit. Jill loved shopping for the club’s “Gift of the Spirit” holiday event where families in need receive gifts that would otherwise be hard to come by. “I appreciate how HJWC supports mothers and children,” Jill says. When asked how she will spend Mother’s Day, Jill smiles softly and describes a day that will start with coffee and planting spring flowers before moving on to brunch at Butterfield Country Club. She says that Ozzie will help the twins make cards and crafty gifts. It will be a perfect family day. “It feels wonderful to be anchored to a small town,” Jill says.

A CAMPAIGN to HELP Hinsdale’s Tiniest Patients THRIVE Meet three of the women behind the initiative to provide NICU families the care and comfort they need. WORDS BY KELLI DOREMUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR FASHION EDITOR THERESA DEMARIA
A
pregnancy begins one of the most wonderful chapters of any parent’s life. Unfortunately, too many families find their babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU,) struggling to survive. Navigating this new, chaotic world can be stressful and overwhelming for parents, especially if they aren’t provided the privacy and comfort they need. That’s why Hinsdale Hospital Foundation is embarking on a critical campaign to raise $15 million for the lifesaving expansion and renovation of their Level III NICU at AdventHealth Hinsdale, formerly known as AMITA Health Adventist Meidcal Center, Hinsdale, and always known locally as simply, Hinsdale Hospital.
A group of philanthropic women were happy to lend a helping hand to bring this initiative to life: Hinsdale Hospital Board and NICU Campaign Cabinet Members Katherine Karvelas and Shana Robertson, and NICU Campaign Cabinet Member Kari Galassi. These ladies all have one thing in common; their love for Hinsdale and the surrounding communities. While the AdventHealth Hinsdale NICU has an incredible, highly qualified team, the unit hasn’t been renovated in 20 years. “At the present time, privacy is nearly nonexistent,” says Karvelas, who understands from first-hand experience the importance of a comfortable NICU stay. “The NICU renovation project is so important to help our families grieve, heal, and express their most private moments, in private. While we can’t control some of the other challenges that life presents,
H I N S D A L E L I V I N G 83

we absolutely can provide a safe, quiet, and private space in which to find comfort, peace, and solace during one of life’s most trying times.” Babies admitted to the NICU are premature (born before 37 weeks), have low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds) or have a medical condition requiring treatment. The NICU staff at AdventHealth Hinsdale treat complex issues from immature lungs, neurological concerns, respiratory failure, and other abnormalities—care that warrants a dramatic upgrade to the current caring environment, both for them and the families they serve. Out of the 28 beds, only three are private. Space is tight, and most consultations take place bedside within ear shot of other families. A comfortable NICU stay can make all the difference for grieving and frightened families, and a quiet space to bond with parents is proven to lower babies’ stress levels and aid in development. On top of privacy issues and constantly worrying about whether their baby will survive, these parents face numerous struggles, such as leaving the hospital knowing their baby must be in someone else’s care; finding time to see their other children while being at the hospital with their baby all day, the space and accommodations to sit—especially moms just recovering from childbirth—by the bedside comfortably, and returning to work quickly in order to save leave-time for when their new baby goes home. After touring the NICU, Galassi was moved to get involved. “My husband and I were blessed to have three healthy babies,” she shares. “I can’t imagine the fear of having a baby in the NICU, and if we can give these families a more comfortable stay, it would be a blessing.” Some features of the NICU renovation will include private patient rooms with space for parents to stay overnight, a family lounge with a refreshments area and work area, a reflection/prayer room, a consultation room; staff office space, new cutting-edge equipment, in-unit restroom facilities, and wraparound support from physical therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, speech therapists, and social workers. This campaign is counting on the Hinsdale community for this dream to become a reality. “There are so many generous people who live in Hinsdale—generous with their time, talent and resources,” says Robinson. “Giving back to the community is key to a community staying strong. The NICU was of particular interest to me as two of my three children spent time there. There’s an incred-

ible team working on this effort, led by long-time Hinsdale OBGYN Dr. Lanny Wilson (Chairman of the NICU Campaign Cabinet,) and I’m honored to be a part of it.” Of the nearly 3,000 babies born at Hinsdale Hospital each year, about 10 percent will need NICU care—that’s 300 babies. Galassi understands how hard it is to truly comprehend what life in the NICU is like until you see one for yourself, which is why she’s scheduled nearly 50 tours. “I believe observing the current space and understanding what these families are dealing with is the best way to motivate people to contribute to the project,” she says. “Our community already has a top-notch staff in our level III NICU, but we need the facilities to meet that level of care.” Construction is scheduled to start this summer, with occupancy in mid-2024. Of the $15 million campaign, Hinsdale Hospital Foundation is raising $5 million. With this NICU renovation, the hospital will be able to expand their capacity to care for the community’s tiniest and sickest babies. “If I wasn’t able to express my pain, confusion, sadness, and fear in private, or speak or sing to my tiny little newborn at my leisure, all while trying to heal post-surgery, the experience would have been even more painful and traumatic,” Karvelas adds. “I implore our community members to please take the time to tour the current NICU to gain a better understanding of the goal and objective of this project, consider supporting our efforts with either a charitable donation or joining us at one of our upcoming events, and reach out to us for more information.” For more information, visit adventhealth.com/foundation/ adventhealth-foundation-great-lakes/adventhealth-foundation-great-lakes-hinsdale.

recently formulated a novel thesis—as yet unpublished by either the Journal of Applied Psychology or the International Journal of Gastronomy and Food Science—that suggests the mood of the country can best be gauged by the waxing or waning popularity of chicken parmesan platters at local restaurants. I plan on calling it the Red Sauce Theorem. When things are looking good— booming stock market, low unemployment, a dearth of foreign entanglements—diners and restaurateurs stiff-arm the red-sauce Italian American staples for Old World Italian esoterica, like tripe Bolognese and porchetta di testa. When things turn more sanguine—say, in the wake of a global pandemic—there’s an immediate run on parmesans, piccatas, and lasagnas. It happened just last year, when a slew of new Italian spots opened in downtown Chicago and proceeded to hawk high-end takes on Italian comfort food, from $60 bone-in veal chop parmesan to scamorza-stuffed H I N S D A L E L I V I N G 88

arancini with ’nduja aioli. At Za Za’s Trattoria in Clarendon Hills, owner Tony Donati can’t help but chuckle at the sheer brazenness of it all. Charge $60 for veal parm? Forgeddaboutit. That’s not exactly Tony’s style. “Look, we keep things very simple here,” says Donati. “My grandfather was a chef. My wife is a wonderful cook. We pay extra to buy the best tomatoes and meat and seafood we can. Our fish is fresh, never frozen. We make our own sauces, some using family recipes. I’m seeing all these new cuts of meat and fancy dishes out there, but as far as I’m concerned a bone-in filet is nothing more than a way to charge someone an extra 25 bucks for a filet.”
Tony will stick to his rustic classics, thank you very much. The kind of dishes that make you want to hum Sinatra and Dean Martin tunes after every bite. Take his silver-platter meatball appetizer, for instance. Two giant meatballs—the size of Vidalia onions—are moated by a pool of red sauce. Wonderful stuff. The meatballs are made from ground beef, browned pork, plus a little ground sausage, bound with a classic blend of breadcrumbs and Romano cheese. We couldn’t get enough of the slightly sweet sauce, so much so that we requested a second bread basket to sop up every last drop of the stuff. Turns out the locals can’t get enough of Donati’s restaurant

either. He’s been running Za Za’s in Clarendon Hills for over 20 years. His recipe book is 400 to 500 entries deep, but over the years, he has realized the value of sticking to his best sellers. Tony is a good listener. When enough people rave about a particular dish, he casts it in stone on his menu. “If someone comes back to us because they really like a particular dish,” he says, “how does it help us to have them sit down and see it’s no longer here?” When we return, we’ll certainly have our list of favorites. Za Za’s
extra-thin beef carpaccio comes overloaded with enough toppings to rival any South Side “kitchen-sink” pizza. The keys to Za Za’s carpaccio? No. 1: The use of oversized capers, which amplify the dish’s signature brininess. And No. 2: slivers of avocado that imbue it with color while providing it a creamy counterbalance to all the acidity. Given that some of Tony’s family hails from Northern Italy, it’s not surprising that the scallops Toscano is a white-wine

Cocktails
Za Za’s regularly runs by-the-glass specials from its wine list, often slashing prices on rosés and Napa blends, but its cocktail list is pretty standard fare, albeit with the inclusion of a couple sweeter tipples, like the house’s banana split martini.

masterpiece. We loved the lilt of licorice and allium-like sweetness created by melting down leeks and fennel. It’s a must-order dish, as is Nana’s gravy, an old-school Sunday supper classic made the right way, using pork neck bones. There’s not much meat on those bones, but what you do receive is as melt-away tender and flavorful as roasted bone marrow. In terms of entrees, we recommend two Northern specialties: the pork tenderloin saltimbocca topped with prosciutto and mozzarella, which is buoyed by a semi-sweet brandy sauce. In terms of seafood, you can’t go wrong with one of the house’s semiregular specials, the Dover sole, which is accompanied by a balsamic-white wine glaze. How about the chicken parm? Yes, Za Za’s has its own dandy little version—no imported panko breadcrumbs nor funky bone-in option needed. It costs a fraction of what you’ll pay downtown and comes with an extra side of linguine at no extra charge. We’d give you a grade, but we needed to leave room for Za Za’s tiramisu, which proved to be as light as fresh-whipped Chantilly cream. And besides, why should I spend any extra time perfecting my second red sauce theorem, when I can eat the real stuff at Tony’s place instead?
Zaza’s Italian Trattoria and Pasteria is located at 441 Ogden Avenue in Clarendon Hills. For more information, call 630-920-0500 or visit zazasclarendonhills.com.
Cosmopolitan:
Za Za’s uses a Ketel One, Cointreau, cranberry and lime juice. This pairs especially well with anything on the dessert list, including the house-made cannoli.

tep outside and take in the fresh Rocky Mountain air this summer. As someone who grew up in the foothills of the Rockies, I took for granted just how refreshing the crisp trees, rippling creeks, and vast open spaces can be. Recently, I visited that bliss in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and was not disappointed at Vista Verde Ranch. Located about 20 minutes from downtown Steamboat Springs in the tiny town of Clark, Colorado, Vista Verde Ranch sits upon nearly 600 acres of fresh ranch land surrounded by the Routt National Forest. It’s just far enough from town to allow you to fully connect with nature, but close enough to go exploring and stop into the local shops filled with artwork and treasures to remember your vacation. Upon arrival, the ranch team was quick to include us in the

fun—leading us straight to the rustic dining room filled with guests who became friends by the end of our stay. Some were there for the first time like us, while others were unofficial experts on the ranch, as they had been returning for more than 10 years. Each meal was not only an opportunity to try the chef ’s Western creations made with locally sourced ingredients, but to get to know the other guests as well. From the rabbit ragu with perfectly cooked pappardelle and hand cut prime rib to the made from scratch soups and salads and perfect pastries, we enjoyed every meal.

JOUR NEYS Following dinner, we joined the other travelers in the great room for live entertainment, line dancing, camaraderie, and a glass of wine. It was just the right amount of Western fun with a luxury cabin to return to at the end of the night. We spent the night soaking with a glass of wine in-hand in the private outdoor spa on our cabin porch. We stayed in the “Saddle” cabin, named after Saddle Mountain, and the views, day and night, were spectacular. The stars that evening looked otherworldly and three-dimensional. While taking in my morning coffee on the wraparound porch I caught sight of the morning herding of the horses from the pasture into the arena areas where we would soon join them for a trail ride. That morning, Vista Verde’s head wrangler, Steph, showed us the ropes around our very welltrained horses before taking us out for a scenic view of the ranch from horseback. The shuffle of our carrier’s hoofs was only broken by the sweet chirps and sounds of nature as we rode past the wide-open spaces, under a clear blue sky. In the afternoon, we headed back to the horse arena for a lesson in archery. One thing about Vista Verde, is the that the staff is not only incredibly friendly, but they are also skilled in many areas. The ranch also offers yoga, fly fishing, mountain biking, paddle boarding, cooking classes, wine tasting, and more during the summer. Although you could spend every moment on the Vista Verde property, downtown Steamboat Springs in a treasure worth exploring as well. We spent the morning stopping into galleries, the highly recommended local bookstore, and locally owned shops on a stroll through town, before settling down for lunch. Salt + Lime, an eclectic Mexican restaurant with a Western flair, served up creative cocktails all their own with street tacos and sides to pair with the vibrant colors. It was just enough to fill

us up before heading back for an afternoon of fishing with our guide. Our final dinner on the ranch left us with an appetite to return. The staff makes you feel at home while also offering all the amenities you’d expect. It is one of only three ranches in the U.S. to be awarded the AAA Four Diamond rating, which is evident the moment you walk through the door. If you plan to make it a family vacation, Vista Verde hosts families with children during certain months, offering fully supervised programs filled with activities that are sure to wear them out. We visited during an adults-only week and the quiet was divine. Steamboat Springs is a worthwhile escape anytime of the year, and it’s clear why this Western paradise, which translates to “Green View Ranch,” is worth adding to your summer travel itinerary. hen longtime clients of Kurt Jacob Miller and S. Lukas Mack decided to leave Chicago and relocate to Hinsdale, they made sure to have their trusted design team in tow. “Hinsdale is suburban living at its best,” says Miller, who co-owns Jacob Lukas Design with Mack. “When we walked up to the front of this 1920s Georgian Revival house, it was giving us all of the Home Alone vibes. We told our clients they had to buy this house—immediately. While we love historic home design, we had a number of ideas for how we could make this house modern and fresh and feel like them.” Miller and Mack have an established reputation in the industry for creating elegant and practical interiors. Their firm was built on the shared belief that your home should be a comfortable place that reflects your personal style. With an extensive knowledge of design history, as well as degrees in design and marketing, this duo creates beautiful spaces for clients of varying tastes and aesthetics. They pride themselves on having a stress-free design process that their clients truly enjoy. When their Hinsdale homeowners moved into their new home, it had been recently renovated. “All of the rooms were very neutral,” adds Mack. “There was a lot of gray that made the home seem very cold. But the house still had many of its original architectural details intact and the rooms were all very well-proportioned.” When it came time for Jacob Lukas to put design to paper, they channeled their love of Scottish castles. “The homeowners’ aesthetic is more traditional than contemporary—more transitional overall,” Mack explains. “Our inspiration was a modern take on Scotland’s Balmoral Castle—very youthful, not stodgy.” While each of the home’s living spaces is generous in size, closets were lacking. “Our first challenge was to outfit the entry way with a large armoire that could accommodate all the things a hall closet is intended for,” Mack says. “We were on the hunt for an oversized French antique armoire that could help with storage. Thankfully, these clients weren’t snobs about the pedigree of antiques or consignment H I N S D A L E L I V I N G 99

pieces we found for them. It gave us a lot of freedom to shop for treasures locally. We loved The Courtyard in Hinsdale and Wheaton’s The Perfect Thing. We found some great pieces with such character that make this home feel very special, including a giant armoire for the foyer. It fit just perfectly next to the staircase without an inch to spare.” In the downstairs living spaces, Jacob Lukas used damask and tartan plaids in warm hues of navy to set the mood. “We could never forget that we were designing this home for a family,” Miller explains of his clients who have a young child. “We needed to think elegant, but washable.” Thus, the family room’s white sectional sofa makes much more sense when you know it’s been covered in a new performance-made fabric that’s derived from all recycled materials. The nod to Balmoral is evident in the choice of the black wrought iron light fixture chosen for the family room, as well as the royal fleur de lis motif that is repeated in a mirror, in an ornamental structure above the doorway, and an art piece on the wall. The room is grounded with a dark gray, almost black paint on one of the facing walls. While navy blue is subtle in this space, there are pops of it in the sectional’s pillows and on the trim on the white drapes. These tones were carried through into the living room, where the rich brown leather sofas are accented with pillows in various blue
patterns and finished with a fur throw. A mix of antiques, wellplaced décor in the unfinished pine bookcase, and the homeowners’ love of contemporary art pieces (they own several original Chagalls) were the finishing touches. “We played off the fact that this home has so many beautiful working fireplaces,” says Mack. “The living room is an inherently cozy space—a room that needed to be comfortable and livable for this young family, so finishing it with natural textures on the windows and furnishings just enhanced this idea.” One of Miller and Mack’s favorite parts of this home project was also one of its most challenging—a secondary foyer off the primary bedroom on the second floor. “When the addition was put on to this home by the previous homeowners, they converted a bedroom into another foyer and this space felt very disconnected from those around it,” Miller says. “To finally integrate the addition with the original home, we created a wall of mirrors and leveraged our client’s love of fashion for the furnishings and lighting we selected. This is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can solve any problem.” For more information and to learn more about the furniture collection they recently debuted, follow Jacob Lukas Design on Instagram @jacoblukasdesign, call 312.450.5101, or visit jacoblukasdesign.com.

EARLIER STARTS, DOUBLE THE GROWTH
Academic Approach CEO Matthew Pietrafetta, Ph.D., answers the question, “when is the right time to start test preparation?” WORDS BY MATTHEW PIETRAFETTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
F
or over 20 years, we’ve been asked many questions about high school and college entrance exams, academic tutoring, and test preparation. While we believe “tests are standardized. Students are not,” and therefore our answer is often “it depends,” our general guidance over the years has been the following: FOR HIGH SCHOOL ENTRANCE, SPRING OF 7TH GRADE. FOR COLLEGE ENTRANCE, SPRING OF 10TH GRADE Earlier starts—rather than cramming last minute—allow students to space out and optimize their learning to maximize academic and test performance and, as a result, achieve more successful outcomes. In compiling and analyzing our own data of thousands of students over twenty years of instruction, there is a clear relationship between preparation time and performance. Students who start earlier can double their scores. PREPARATION & PRACTICE TIME IMPROVE PERFORMANCE In Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell popularized the claim that, whether in sports, music, or academic performance, 10,000 hours of practice is how long it takes to become an expert in something. Not only is this claim impractical in most contexts (10 hours a week for 20 years to get to expert level—yikes!), but its focus on quantity over quality obscures the true value of high-quality learning practice: a cycle of study, retention, performance, insightful feedback, modification, and improvement. In fact, a study published in Psychological Science found that looking at quantity alone accounted for only 4 percent of the variance in performance in education. That said, we know Gladwell is correct in that having enough time to prepare matters; there is certainly a minimum amount of practice required to develop expertise. But why? In her research on choking under pressure, discussed in her 2010 book Choke, former Professor of Psychology at the University of Chicago and current President at Barnard College Sian Beilock highlights why having the time to practice matters: it reduces the burden of stress on working memory, so the capacity for think-
ing and problem solving is improved by mitigating the impact of anxiety during high-stakes events like high school and college entrance exams. Beilock’s research can be located within a century of research on “the spacing effect:” the finding that long-term learning is promoted when learning events are spaced out over time, rather than presented in immediate succession. Distributed learning studies have consistently shown that spaced learning (versus massed or clumped learning) leads to better memorization of and performance with both simple and complex concepts. OUR RESEARCH SHOWS EARLIER STARTS CAN DOUBLE GROWTH Students who begin preparation in the spring of sophomore year for a test they take in the spring of junior year or fall of senior year nearly double the growth of students who start the summer prior to or fall of senior year in preparation for a senior fall exam. While this data represents average growth (and students follow very personalized pathways of learning), it does offer some direction: When preparing to perform well on a summative exam of grammar, reading, math, and scientific reasoning that spans multiple grades of curriculum, taking the appropriate amount of time to prepare positively impacts results. Spacing out preparation—rather than cramming—offers the student a gradual, in-depth process of learning academic content and skills, so working memory functions more efficiently and performance stress can be managed down effectively over time. WHEN DO I START? We encourage students, when possible, to begin preparation in 7th grade spring and summer for high school entrance exams and 10th grade spring and summer for college entrance exams. Students will find that their earlier starts lead to more successful academic ends. For more information, call 630.296.9167 or visit academicapproach.com/smarthighschoolhl.

ike the rest of the Chicago suburbs, the real estate market in Hinsdale and its surrounding communities has heated up the past two years as people have sought more space to set up home offices and make home life more comfortable. With 32 years of experience in the market, Mike McCurry and his team have been through their fair share of market swings. Over the years, they’ve helped more than 1,600 families find or sell a home, and 74 percent of those he helps are repeat clients, a testament to their client-focused approach. “It’s really the art of pivoting over 32 years. In the real estate industry, you need to decide if you’re going to be the dinosaur or if you’re going to be relevant,” McCurry says. “I chose to embrace the ever-changing tools and technology and trends to stay fresh.” Another advantage McCurry brings to the table for clients is his partnerships with designers, builders, and vendors to prepare homes for sale. They also help families who just want to upgrade their homes to gain more space or increase their property values. That’s especially important when building supplies can be hard to come by or are prohibitively expensive. “We have the vendors and team to be able to pull off a kitchen rebuild and do some things that allow homeowners to reinvest in and upgrade their homes,” he says. For those looking to buy, McCurry says that in the current hot market, they are much better served by partnering with an agent who has a deep understanding of the local neighborhoods and communities in which they’re conducting their home search. With limited inventory, local knowledge gives buyers an edge, and with
so many homes never even making it to the MLS or Private Listing Service, it’s essential to work with someone plugged in to the local network. “In the past, you used to get buyers who would bring their Chicago agent or their own family member from a different marketplace from Hinsdale or Clarendon Hills or Western Springs or Oak Brook and it wouldn’t be too much of a deal,” says McCurry. “Now, unless you’re totally locked into the local brokerage community, it’s hard to find the property.” With buyers and sellers having so many options when they’re looking for a real estate professional, McCurry says his team’s experience along with the technology offered by Compass—he joined Compass three years ago—stand out. “What I represent as a value proposition to buyers and sellers is longevity in the market, and what we’ve done is to pivot every time there are opportunities,” he says. “Compass is a young, fresh company that is very interested in technology and helping their agents use it to help their clients.” On a personal level, McCurry is heavily involved in Christ Church of Oak Brook, and his strong faith is influential in how he operates his business. “I realized early in my career that it’s quite an honor to be given a seat at the table to help families with important decisions about where they will make their home,” he says. “In essence, it’s a calling from God that I’ve taken very literally.” Mike McCurry Group of Compass is located at One Grant Square in Hinsdale, 630-447-9393, themccurrygroup.com.
