Why You Need an Attorney:

Many potential clients are confused as to why obtaining an attorney is crucial even if they intend to mediate. To obtain a divorce, each party will have to retain their own separate attorney or represent themselves pro se, regardless of the de cision to mediate. One attorney in Illinois is not permitted to represent both parties. This is because parties do not obtain a divorce in mediation, they simply reach an agreement. After mediation, the agreement the parties come to must be memo rialized in a document and presented to the court to acquire a Obtainingdivorce. an attorney from the beginning of a case is vitally important to ensure a spouse’s rights are properly advocated for. An attorney can use their expertise in determining the specific needs of the family and recognize if their case would benefit from mediation. If so, an attorney can advocate for their client’s individualized needs during mediation and assist in executing the final documents.

Morgan L. Stogsdill, Partner and Head of Family Law, Beermann LLP

Attending mediation with or without counsel is a personal de cision, however, an attorney will still be required to draft and enter an agreement in court to effectively obtain a divorce.

What is Mediation?

Extremely low conflict couples may wish to attend mediation without their attorneys. If the case involves substantial assets, complex issues or one spouse is not comfortable in the pro cess, it is recommended an attorney attend with their client.

Bottom Line: Approaching a divorce can be intimidating and confusing. The bottom line is that each party needs an attorney to obtain a divorce. Retaining an attorney is necessary even when parties plan to attend mediation. An attorney can assist in determin ing if mediation is the right choice, and if so, drafting and pre senting the final agreement to the court to finalize a divorce. Be your own advocate and talk to an attorney to ensure you have all the tools necessary to obtain an equitable and timely divorce. Knowledge is power, and obtaining more information will put parties in the best possible position for success!

MEDIATION — Do You Need an Attorney?

Mediation is an alternative dispute resolution technique in which parties are assisted by a neutral third-party mediator in coming to an agreement. Each party is encouraged to actively participate in the mediation process to ensure the parties reach an agreement that accommodates their unique situation. The mediator is without decision-making authority, but can pro vide the parties with neutral, problem-solving suggestions to facilitate compromise and agreement. Although mediation promotes compromise and expedites an agreement, parties cannot obtain a divorce in mediation.

M aking the decision to file for divorce is tough and oftentimes presents many questions for both spouses. It is a common misconception to believe that the only way to divorce your spouse is through litigation. While this may be the best option for some families, other families may be better suited utiliz ing an alternative dispute resolution technique such as medi ation. While not for everyone, mediation is a good cost-sav ing tool that provides privacy and control to families. While a mediation is an appealing route for many divorcing couples, it commonly presents a multitude of questions: Do I need an attorney? Can my spouse and I retain the same attorney for mediation? Will I obtain a divorce in mediation.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE 46 THE BUZZ 84 DINNER DATE HINSDALE LIVING 40 48 COUNTRYTOWNVS 60 JETÉ

September is the month when we spotlight high fashion trends. And with that in mind, our cover story combines high style and horses—two signature qualities that make our community such a special place to live. Be sure to turn to “Horse & Glory,” a beautifully styled look book in a gorgeous equestrian setting with everything you need to know about the pieces you’ll want to have on repeat this season. Another feature to turn to highlights eight new dancers joining the incomparable Joffrey Ballet. Considered one of the most prestigious dance companies in the world, the Joffrey is known for presenting everything from classics to modern masterpieces. Meet them here in our September issue before you head into the city this month for a performance. Dinner Date unveils a Roman import, Piccolo Buco, in Oak Brook. This new dining destination offers modernist pizzas and pastas you’ll keep going back for. Our Country vs. Town feature introduces you to Hinsdale's Smreti Didwani, who shares her faves around the village along with favorite walks in the world— from the streets of the Gold Coast of Chicago to the Rue Saint Honoree in Paris. And don’t forget to turn to our Publisher’s Profiles, which bring the best local businesses directly to your door. This month we receive travel advice from Royal Travel and Tours, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, along with inside tips from Timothy Long, Hindman Auctions’ Director and Senior Specialist of Couture and Luxury Accessories. The timing with our fall fashion issue could not be more perfect as he shares how something as simple as clothing choice can define us. We also hear from attorneys Brendan Hammer and Michione Riewer and get fresh insight about the college admissions process from Dr. Matthew Pietrafetta, CEO of Academic Approach. Also be sure to turn to our story about Dr. Jeffrey Weller, who was inspired by his uncle to become a dentist and carries that warm, family feeling into his successful practice.Enjoy the pictures, and good reading.  J.W. What a “good” divorce requires, if I had to generalize, is basically a constant process of getting out of your own way. To be very blunt and say something that many others will not – it also means putting aside whatever the law says and doing what is right for the children involved and the person you married. One cannot expect a warm, cooperative flower of coparenting to grow out of the flinty, rocky soil of what the law provides. Divorce also requires banishing the Triple Axis of Bad Feelings: Blame, Shame and Guilt. People cannot coparent and work effectively together if mired in blame, shame and guilt. It is like ordering a Diet Coke with a Baconator and large fries every day and then being surprised that your jeans don’t fit. It is absurd.

ESQU IRE HINSDALE LIVING 54

This does not mean that good divorce is about singing kumbaya while enjoying oat milk and acai smoothies while blissing out on good vibes. Rather, it is simply choosing not to add fuel to what is already a burning fire. Divorce only severs a legal relationship and certain rights. It does not mandate, prohibit, prescribe or proscribe anything else. It does not force behavior or preclude options. It is up to every divorcing person to make those choices, enact them, and then live with and carry them forward. I often say the way you divorce says a lot more about you than what you “got” in your divorce. Peace is a continuous choice and a perpetual mindset. It is a lifestyle in every sense of the word. Making this kind of peace is harder than going to trial and it involves a lot more than just agreeing to resolve a case through mediation. I have seen first-hand several mediations that were more personally combative for the spouses, grueling in time and effort, and costly than one would ever expect for an alternative dispute resolution process. And regardless of venue, a mindset of vindication, validation and victory is a short-term trade. It sets one up for obtaining a Pyrrhic victory at best and quite likely losing what matters longer term. Very few people will look back at their divorce and think to themselves “I wish it had been nastier.” It just doesn’t happen. The fights we fight in divorce aren’t really about what we say they’re about. They are proxy wars that neither side can ever win. Even after obtaining some of the largest judgments and results for clients – many of them still feel they lost. Because they did. That’s the gist. More on this next month.

ROBIN SUBAR THE FAMILYCREATINGDÉTENTEDIVORCEAND2.0 Getting out of your own way for a “good” divorce.

This month, my ex-wife and I will mark the eighth anniversary of our divorce. Since that time, we have co-parented our son with an unorthodox and unusual degree of collaboration as a team and as a family, together although apart. Some people assume that we were able to divorce amicably because we are both divorce lawyers, and therefore, we must know “how to do it.” It is true that one rarely sees very long and public divorce proceedings when divorce lawyers are themselves involved as participants – and there are some things we know to avoid. This does not mean that many of our own, personal cases are not rife with rancor or time consuming and expensive. We just know how to keep our own business under wraps and away from view. That said, the professional experiences and observations of both of us undeniably informed our desire to nor re-enact what we see too much of in our clients’ cases on a daily. However, the critical thing that made our peaceful process possible then and has continued to sustain it for almost a decade and two cross-country moves, is something else entirely.

hen we present ourselves to the world, we choose clothes that show who we are. The choice of the clothing we wear is an intimate one, defining our days and nights. Fashion is one of the first things we think about in the morning, to ensure that we feel comfortable, protected, and confident.

Perhaps you can find another one at auction.

Fashion is not just a utilitarian commodity. Fashion is an art—a “soft sculpture”—designed to please the eye and perform a function, making it one of the most complex artistic forms. Design, engineering, science, and artistry are all required to make a garment or accessory. In addition, fashion responds to and influences societal changes, making it a powerful transversal tool to study history and the diversity of people who wear it. Fashion choices are, therefore, of paramount importance. People with an interest in fashion span all sections of society, from museums seeking items of historical significance to collectors passionate about designers and styles to the wearers who like to be draped in beautiful and functional garments. Savvy buyers know that the auction market is a place to find unique finds. In recent years, investors are also placing their bets on the secondary market for fashion, with Forbes contributor Lela London reporting that “Designer Handbags Are Now A Better Investment Than Art.” Forbes quotes the annual review by Art Market Research, which “has been measuring price movements in the fine art market since 1976,” stating that luxury handbags “now outperform art, classic cars, and rare whiskies in terms of investment potential. Some bags, from the likes of Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton, have even experienced a valuation spike of an average of 83 percent in the last ten years. To put that into context, coins have increased by 21 percent, first-edition books by 42 percent, and watches—the assumed king of fashionable investments—by just 72 percent.”

In addition, buying clothes with a history behind them is a choice that helps the planet by avoiding “fast fashion.” In an article by contributor Catherine Erdly, Forbes reported that the “secondhand clothing market is growing 11 times faster than traditional retail and is estimated to be worth more than double that of fast fashion, at $84 billion by 2030 (while fast fashion is projected to be worth around $40 billion at the same time).” And who doesn’t have a favorite piece of clothing they would like to wear forever?

item, we perform careful research to ensure authenticity, quality, and condition. This process is why our clients include first-class museums, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In a world that appears to encourage an eternal revival of forms and styles—think how styles come in and out of fashion over the years—garments and accessories sold at Hindman are historically significant, expanding the notion of fashionable from something ephemeral to something eternally wearable.

Ashley is exceptional at recognizing talented and emerging dancers who embody the exceptional level of creativity that makes the Joffrey unique. Our Board chair, Anne Kaplan, is also deeply committed to their growth onstage and off; part of our overall vision to give every Joffrey artist the tools to be exceptional artistic and cultural ambassadors.”

The dancers will help The Joffrey Ballet kick off its second season at the Lyric Opera House with live music performed by the Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Joffrey Music Director Scott Speck. “Our partnership with Lyric Opera has created a perfect situation as far as presenting transformative and powerful dance,” says Cameron.

ne of the most prestigious dance companies in the world, The Joffrey Ballet has a reputation for boundary-breaking performances with a mix of all-time classics, modern masterpieces, and original works. That stellar reputation has been shaped by Greg Cameron, who has been leading The Joffrey Ballet as president and CEO since 2013, and Ashley Wheater MBE, The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director. “Over the last several years, the Joffrey has striven to curate performances that speak to our ambitions, provide a voice to rising choreographic talent, and reach audiences everywhere,” says Wheater. This season, the Joffrey will add nine new dancers to the company—Davide Oldano, Coco Alvarez-Mena, Wictor Hugo Pedroso, Natali Taht, Zach Manske, Nae Kojima, Basia Rhoden, Sergei Osminkin, and Annabelle de la Nuez— who hail from across the globe. Think everywhere from Miami, Florida and St. Paul, Minnesota to Tallinn, Estonia and Turin, Italy.

Cameron elaborates, “These individuals bring many differ ent backgrounds and experiences, talents, and personalities.

“This city has an incredible capacity to embrace art at every level, from ballet and opera to classical music and contemporary art and theater,” says Wheater. “I find that incredibly inspiring.” For more information, visit joffrey.org.

“This isn’t the Disney animated film version of The Little Mermaid but instead a sophisticated take on the fable,” says Wheater. “The sets and costumes are of the grandest scale. “Our art form must constantly evolve to remain relevant and have a place in this ever-changingworld...”

“I truly believe community makes us stronger,” says Cameron. “A foundational principle of our founder Robert Joffrey was that dance was for everyone. Our ‘Joffrey for All’ programming is a reflection of that principle and also the core of the Joffrey’s mission to make dance accessible and relatable. It’s about collaboration, partnership with the community, honoring and supporting artists, and telling stories that truly move people.”When Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino founded The Joffrey Ballet in 1956, they must have known that spotlighting rising choreographers and emerging talent would be vital to the longevity of ballet. As Robert Joffrey once said, “Classical ballet is our core, but it is not our circumference.” That’s something Wheater inherently understands, too.

Neumeier’s haunting interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairytale The Little Mermaid—with an original score by Lera Auerbach—is soon to be the largest production ever mounted by the Joffrey and will premiere in April 2023. It’ll follow the tormented mermaid heroine on a journey between the divergent worlds of land and sea—one utterly complex, the other magnificently serene.

And there’s no better place for exploration than Chicago.

years, Cameron says the Joffrey will continue to focus on its strategic initiative and a rebrand of its educational programming “Joffrey for All,” envisioning a three-tiered approach for a holistic Joffrey education, including exposure to dance through Joffrey Community Engagement, scholarships, and training at the Joffrey Academy of Dance. The Joffrey has every intention of leading from the front, bringing new ideas about what dance and dance education can be to a growing generation of artists looking to make an impact. New dancers Oldano and Kojima were promoted from the Joffrey Studio Company, a professional training program within the Joffrey Academy that is described as the “penultimate step to becoming a professional dancer.”

classics like Suite Saint- Saëns from the Joffrey’s own Gerald Arpino, paired with back-to-back grand story ballets—Anna Karenina and The Little Mermaid—by two giants of the art form in Yuri Possokhov and John Neumeier.

Wheater, in partnership with Raymond Rodriguez, Abbott Academy Director of the Joffrey Academy of Dance, helped bring the Joffrey’s ballet for young audiences Rita Finds Home to fruition this summer with an all-woman creative team made up of choreographer Amy Hall Garner, author Karla Estela Rivera, and illustrator Elisa

says Wheater. “Performing the classics and simultaneously bringing in rising choreographers to set work on our company is what shapes the type of artists that have always made up the Joffrey—those who can perform a technically demanding ballet like Don Quixote and then turn around and perform a much more contemporary work. Nurturing and embracing this breadth of repertoire is so important. I am always exploring the limitless language of dance.”

As Arturo prepares to celebrate the quarter-century anniversary of his Lake Forest business, he reflects fondly on his time in the community. “People always ask me when I’m going to retire and I just can’t think of it,” he says. “I love my clients and they love me back.”

Blooming

“I could never have dreamed that one day I would own a flower shop in downtown Lake Forest,” says Arturo Mar. “But 25 years later, here we are.”Arturo, owner and founder of Lake Forest’s Lord & Mar, grew up in the great state of Texas before making his way to Chicago more than three decades ago. He fell in love with a storefront in Lake Forest and within a month of moving in, he learned that Gorton Community Center was hosting a gala for 700 people at one of Lake Forest’s lakefront estates. “I learned that the florist had to back out,” Arturo recalls. “I reached out to the co-chairs and told them that I would design the event for free if they would cover the cost of materials. This gorgeous party put Lord & Mar on the map.”

“I love each client individually and my clients love flowers,” he says. “When they entertain, they go all out. It’s not just one bouquet, it’s flowers galore. And they’re always custom—no two homes, parties, or weddings are ever the same.”

The award-winning floral mastermind is also the lead design liaison on large-scale events with corporate accounts including Bloomingdale’s and Hyatt Hotels. “My suppliers span the globe: air freighting florals from Holland to sourcing barware and dinnerware from France and England. I work with the best in the industry upholding the luxury requirements that have created the most memorable and exquisite events,” explains Arturo.

Most of Arturo’s clients have been with him since almost day one, contracting with him for many of life’s milestones including weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, first communions, and graduations.

HINSDALE LIVING 71 THE PREVIEW

About 150 people will “Gather for Good” at Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois’ (LCFS) 33rd annual Harvest Festival on Friday, October 28. It’s a treasured tradition for many. For those who have not previously attended, it’s a must-add to fall calendars. LCFS does incredible work year-round, and the Harvest Festival is important in supporting all this organization regularly accomplishes.Thefundraiser will return to a fully in-person event at the chic Le Meridien Hotel in Oak Brook in their top-floor windowed ballroom. The fall-themed festive night will feature live and silent auctions, raffles, a wine and whiskey pull, open bar, food buffets, live music, and dancing. “The Harvest Festival provides the opportunity to celebrate a legacy of service that goes back almost 150 years and our current position as a leader within Illinois’ child welfare system,” says Mike Bertrand, LCFS President and CEO. LCFS has grown into one of the largest community-based social service agencies in Illinois with programs including foster care, adoption, counseling, and preventative services. “We are especially proud of our work to reduce children’s time in foster care and reunite families,” says Bertrand. Last year, 40 percent of foster children served by LCFS left foster care to a loving forever family as compared to the state’s average of 30 percent. Nearly 70 percent of those children were reunited with their families.

The Harvest Festival is LCFS’ premier fundraising event of the year. Money raised helps LCFS do things like providing preventative services for families to keep children out of foster care, recruit foster families, and ensure foster children served by LCFS have access to things that will help them thrive, like summer camp or Little League. It is a hard-working group devoted to protecting childhood for so many Illinois kids. This year, attendees will have the opportunity to bid on live auction items such as a piece of jewelry donated by C.D. Peacock, a three-hour private, catered yacht cruise on Lake Michigan for 24 people, and an African photo safari trip. Tickets are $175, and this year a limited number of VIP tickets are also available for $250. The VIP experience includes a champagne toast upon arrival, a swag bag and complimentary valet parking.

O

ne evening, while dining in downtown Chicago, I was introduced to a man who claimed to have discovered the most exotic pizza in all of Italy. Not, mind you, a pizza carpeted with esoteric ingredients. Or one of those Vegas-style scams that involve sprinkling tiny slivers of gold leaf on an otherwise ordinary pie. No something better: an altogether new sub-species of pizza. It was, I must admit, one of the most tantalizing ice-breakers ever uttered in the presence of a food writer—the equivalent of confiding to a Mongolian scholar that you’ve unearthed the lost tomb of Genghis Khan. Turns out, my new dinner companion—whom I’d later learn was Tim McEnery, the founder of the Cooper’s Hawk restaurant empire—wasn’t spinning tall tales. He really had stumbled onto something quite special while vacationing with his fiancé, Liz, in Rome a few years ago. The discovery? A tiny pizzeria called Piccolo Buco, which was baking pizzas fringed by a ridgeline of crust so massive it brings to mind visions of the White Cliffs of Dover. “I can’t explain it,” Tim said, shaking his head like a wine-maker trying to express the indescribable charms of a rare Nebbiolo, “other than to say it’s unlike anything you can find here in the U.S.” I remember making some flippant comment about wanting to book the next direct flight to Rome. To which Tim responded: No need. We’ve signed a deal with the chef of Piccolo Buco, Luca Issa. He’s going to bring his pizzas to the Chicago area in partnership with Cooper’s Hawk. Flash forward to the present, and McEnery has made good on his promise: The first state-side iteration of Piccolo Buco has landed in Oakbrook Center, as have Issa’s pizzas. They are indeed beautiful curios bearing exaggerated features. Imagine hiring a

Pineapple Negroni: The gin here is a citrus-forward delight: Malfy gin made with oranges and Sicilian blood oranges. It’s slightly tart character is an ideal counterbalance to its pineappleinfused Aperol and a dash of sweet vermouth.

We also were impressed by Issa’s forktender short rib—more fruit-flavored on the palate, like a good Pinot Noir than your typical dark, beefy and brooding short rib preparations. It’s served with a delicious mascarpone polenta that’s as creamy as the interior folds of an expertly prepared French omelet.Piccolo Buco’s pasta list is pure Roma, thus it includes three pastas you’ll find at every trattoria in the Eternal City: the cheese-meets-peppercorn cacio e pepi , creamy carbonara with pancetta and a classic redsauce all’Amatriciana made with guanciale. But don’t sleep on its richest offering: stuffed cappellaci (hat-shaped ravioli) that are smothered in a fonduta, then topped with a sweet balsamic and bits of pistachio. By the time you’ve polished off the house’s excellent crostata for dessert, you’ll realize Piccolo offers more than just the thrill of exotic pizzas; it’s really a love letter to the eternal appeal of classic Roman cooking. Piccolo Buco is located in Oakbrook Center. Call 630.592.8885 or visit piccolobuco.coopershawk. com.

Piccolo has shown great care in sourcing first-class ingredients. Its fabulous fried squash blossoms are battered in a thin coating of rice flour, then stuffed with a four-cheese blend of ricotta, Parmesan, romano and fontina.

Although you can certainly sip your way around Cooper’s Hawk’s fun catalogue of wines, Piccolo Buco’s drink list offers a wry wink to Old World drinking habits. shortBraisedrib

skilled caricaturist to design a pizza that’s 80 percent crust and you’ll get the general idea. It’s as if someone stuck the needle of a basketball pump inside a typical Neapolitanstyle crust and continually inflating it, producing a soaring crust that encircles an almost liquefied central basin of meat, sauce andFromcheese.afar, one might assume that crust is all air, but its actually incredibly warm, dense and gooey—almost par-baked in texture. It reminded me of Brazilian pao de queijo, those addictive cheese puffs served at churrascarias.Thepiesthemselves are made with very simple ingredients: flour, water, olive oil, yeast and salt. But here’s one of Piccolo Buco’s little tricks: Its dough is prepared using a spiral mixer with a fixed hook, rather than traditional centrifugal mixers that generate more heat and thus more gluten. The pliable dough then undergoes a cold fermentation process, similar to a Neapolitan pizza, before it’s allowed to come to room temp and carefully stretched out until it looks like something Picasso would paint onto a canvas. Yet, for all the Instagram love these pizzas have generated, I’d argue that it’s the tomatoes used for its sauce that are the real draw.Although you can order a white pie, which substitutes olive oil for tomato sauce, the saucy ones are the most intriguing. Both rely on tomatoes from Puglia: red tomatoes for Piccolo’s more traditional marinara-like sauce and smaller milder yellow cherry tomatoes for their yellow pizzas, which are slightly sweeter and less acidic.

Regardless of destination, some travelers are looking for authen ticity and are hoping for a full immersion in the cultures of their destination. Others are embracing wellness, hoping to relax and unplug after a tumultuous few years. And some are leaning into gluttony, opting for food- and wine-appreciation trips.

Business, she says, has been booming as people return to travel. And the industry has evolved to become more tech-forward, with touchless check-in to minimize human-to-human contacts, QR codes at restaurants for menu access, and more. As such, the Royal Travel & Tours team has seen an influx of both last-minute travel as well as bucket list trip planning.

“It’s pretty rare to still be family-owned and operated at the size we are,” says Thornton. “We have 14 advisors on our team and have continued to be one of the top-selling leisure agencies in northern Illinois for decades. Our team has traveled collectively to neary 150 countries and we bring that knowledge and experience back to our clients”With half a century of experience, the Royal Travel & Tours team has unparalleled knowledge of—and access to—the finest travel experiences in the world.

The Royal Travel & Tours team keeps that in mind, planning a trip 100 percent unique to the traveler. Thornton and her team travel extensively to stay abreast of the latest trends. Thornton has already visited Cuba, Hawaii (twice), Mexico, London, France and South Africa earlier this year, and spent her summer sailing in Turkey, Greece, and Spain. Her team has been busy traveling as well, spending time in Saudi Arabia, England, Spain, Italy, the Caribbean, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Dubai, and more, in what Thornton calls a “canvas of the continents” that’s an effort to “practice what we preach.”

The team creates fully customized itineraries for their clients in a process Thornton likens to that of a personal shopper. Some clients like to be fully booked with every minute planned, while others prefer to lock in the hotel and flights with more time to wing it.

Thornton herself is on the advisory board of Travel + Leisure magazine, and two of Royal Travel & Tours’ advisors – Brittney Magner and Melissa Lee – are on the magazine’s A-list. Two others – Stacey Cohen and Tara Koehler – have been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler as best in the industry. Kim Launer, Royal’s longest employee with a rolodex of luxury clients across the Western Sub urbs was selected by Travel Agent Magazine as one of the top travel agents of all time. “We have a lot of experts on our team, which is unique for a company of this size,” says Thornton. “It’s been fun to be creative again. I have a renewed appreciation for the industry and for what we do on a daily basis; that is, make people’s dreams come true and create memories that last a lifetime.”

GURUTRAVEL

According to Thornton, Western Europe such as France, Spain, Italy, England, and Ireland, is extremely popular right now, along with South Africa, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Greece, French Polynesia, the Maldives, and Dubai.

traveling.“Weare seeing a lot of multi-generational trips, too,” says Thorn ton. “People have missed out on a lot of birthdays and holidays, so they’re making up for lost time.” For clients concerned about trav eling safely due to COVID or global unrest, Thornton recommends a private yacht charter in the Caribbean or Mediterranean, or an African Safari. Royal Travel & Tours has seen an increase in clients renting Richard Branson’s islands in the British Virgin Islands for a private experience.

To honor this impressive milestone, Thornton has a variety of special moments planned throughout the year. She will be taking Royal Travel & Tours’ top sellers to Hawaii in May for a wellnessinspired retreat at the new Four Seasons Sensei Lanai. The team will also host a company party this fall and head to Las Vegas for their industry conference in November. Royal Travel will launch a new cutting edge web site and brand redesign in November; that Thornton says will better fit with the company’s “ability to curate unique authentic experiences that are reflections of our individual client’s interests and tastes.

This year, family-owned travel agency Royal Travel & Tours will celebrate 50 years of business. Founded in 1972 by Larry and Kay Berke in DeKalb, the agency is now owned and run by their daughter Kendra Thornton, who took the reins in 2016 and relocated to Winnetka.

In addition to the emotional roller coaster following the discovery that your spouse has chosen to be with someone else, comes the fear of how to protect yourself and your family from the financial and emotional devastation that often follows. First, check your bank and investment accounts, credit cards, phone records, and email accounts to make sure that nothing is out of the ordinary. Then call an attorney. Sit down with the attorney to discuss what can be done to ensure that you are financially and legally secure while navigating the event’s emotional devastation. Obtain enough information to understand the entire divorce process. This knowledge will allow you to feel more confident as you make decisions. If you do not feel confident after meeting with the divorce attorney, meet with another attorney. The right fit is Oftenessential.there is no need to make decisions immediately. Other times there is a benefit to moving quickly. It is best to know as much about the situation as possible before you have to make decisions. It is also important to have an understanding of the divorce process and a checklist that allows you to make sure everything remains status quo while you explore your next steps. In addition to calling a divorce lawyer, it is a good idea to obtain a counselor or therapist to help you traverse the emotional aspects of this discovery. Relying on family, friends, coworkers, or even worse your spouse or attorney to help you navigate the emotional turmoil is ineffective and often detrimental. If you do not feel relief and confidence after you meet with the first therapist, meet with another. Quality professional relationships areAessential.majority of divorces are sparked by a sudden awareness that one party or the other has found someone else. That is almost never the root problem. Few people choose to cheat on their spouse when they are happily married. The underlying (often longterm) acrimony makes the divorce process very difficult, so obtaining good counsel and a therapist will help. Charting a path of least resistance with little drama and bitterness is ideal. If you are able to envision what your life will look like six months or a year out, it makes the journey less painful and scary. An affair does not have to end in divorce. Realistically, however, divorce is one of the possibilities. Therefore, it is important to get enough information to know your rights and potential outcomes. At Strategic Divorce, we are available to help you understand the divorce process and provide you with knowledge so that the options are understandable and clear.

Weller Dental Group Welcomes You! Weller Dental Welcomes You To Your New Dental Home Providing Teen to Adult Comprehensive Dental Solutions Where You Are Treated Like Family! CALL TODAY! Dr.WellerJeffrey Dr.SultanAyesha BOTH DENTISTS ARE LICENSED AS A GENERAL DENTIST IN STATE OF ILLINOIS

Profile

When he was a young student in school Weller remembers when teachers would ask him what he wanted to do when he grew up the first thing that popped into his head was that he wanted to be like his uncle. He wanted to be a dentist.

“From what I’ve seen over my time in practicing a lot of dentists, as soon as they get out of school, start looking at individual teeth and treating a tooth if there’s a problem,” Weller says. “They don’t look at how it affects the entire mouth. What I try to do is look at patients’ long-term goals and evaluate how each tooth that I work on is going to affect the entire mouth.”

Key to his dental practice’s success is that it’s a family-run practice in an age where the dental and medical industries have seen plenty of consolidation. His family is deeply involved in the day-to-day business. “We’re a family-run practice. My sister Jamie is one of our office managers and my wife Tina is our treatment coordinator,” says Weller. “All of my staff is highly trained. I work with them all the time as far as how they talk to patients, how they treat patients, and we educate all our patients very well. A lot of dentistry, just like medicine, has gone corporate and we definitely work with people more personally.”

Weller Dental is located at 920 N. York Road in Hinsdale, 630-6542900, and 1050 N. State Streeet in Chicago, 312-654-0606, wellerdental.com.

“Dr. Sultan is doing more of the general dentistry and smaller cosmetic cases like bonding, laser gum contouring, and Invisalign,” Dr. Weller says. “I focus more on the comprehensive dentistry, the more complex cases.”

“We’re also doing a lot with lasers, including laser gum contouring, so somebody that might have shorter teeth, if I want them to be a little longer, we may laser the soft tissue to create a little wider and broader smile,” he says.

“He was a dentist and back then we traveled by car more than by plane for family vacations. We would visit and hang out with him and his family,” Weller says. “I just thought he was a great guy, a fun-loving guy, very caring guy, and I kind of looked up to him and admired him.”

hen Dr. Jeffrey Weller was young his family would make swings through Iowa during driving vacations to visit his uncle who, it turns out, would have a lasting influence on him.

WORDS

Weller dental increasingly uses new technology in its practice, including digital technology to photograph teeth which can be used over years to shape long-term treatment plans for patients. Staff use 3D scanners to take impressions which can be used to explore cosmetic enhancement options.

DentistrDistinctivey

Weller says dentists aren’t trained in dental school to take a comprehensive and preventative approach to treating their patients but to treat problems that have already occurred. His approach to treatment is to evaluate a patient’s teeth and mouth over time and to create long-term plans to keep them healthy.

After finishing his schooling Weller set up shop on the North Side of Chicago at Lincoln and Belmont. Twenty-six years ago, he transitioned that office to the Gold Coast, and eight years ago he opened a second office in Hinsdale. He and his colleague, Dr. Ayesha Sultan, each spend a few days a week in each office.

As we described in Earlier Starts, Double the Growth, students who begin preparing for the ACT or SAT in the spring of sophomore year have the greatest growth outcomes. Why? By spacing their learning, students maximize their ability to absorb, retain, and apply both academic content and test-taking strategies. If your growth goal is substantial, start early and invest time in a longer-term program.

ACT & SAT Performance HINSDALE LIVING 114

• For a student in Pre-Calc or Calculus in junior year, they may have forgotten math content covered in earlier years, requiring some time to refresh before testing at their optimal level.

• Depending upon the test the student is preparing for and their performance history in algebra and geometry courses, they may need more or less time to review, master, retain, and apply key concepts.

For more information, visit academicapproach.com/hinsdaleliving or call 630-454-9873.

The student’s schedule is a key factor in timelining preparation. If possible, you want to front-load work into slow seasons—summer break, semesters when the student is not stretched thin by extracurriculars, etc. As we know, cramming (especially when students are burdened with a maximum academic workload) does not promote peak performance. That’s why we recommend early planning conversations with families.

For 21 years, parents have asked us “When should I expect my student to achieve their best score on the ACT or SAT?” At Academic Approach, we know that “Tests are standardized; students are not™” so the answer varies by student. We recognize that planning for success requires data, analysis, and a personalized plan for each student. That’s why we begin our programs with complimentary ACT & SAT practice tests followed by a comprehensive consultation with each family to analyze results, assess learning needs, think through priorities, and, ultimately, craft a personalized plan of instruction and timeline for success.Astudent’s timeline for achieving their best score is primarily based on three key factors. The student’s: growth goal, math level, andAcademicschedule.

The Student’s Math Level

Approach strategically plans around these three factors, ensuring a well-designed and well-timed instruction plan that enables students to achieve their best results.

Another factor that influences a student’s performance is the level of math a student is taking in school. ACT and SAT math assesses 7th through 11th grade math topics; however, they do so in varying proportions. Therefore, every preparation course must be designed in relation to the student’s current math class. Below is the average distribution of high school coursework to the ACT and SAT math sections.

If a student’s growth goal is relatively modest (1-2 points on the ACT, 30-50 points on the SAT), then they may have a shorter program length. If a student’s growth goal is more substantial, of course, it takes longer. This can mean as significant a difference in program design as 10 hours of instruction and 2 practice tests to 40 hours of instruction and 8 practice tests. Like any academic achievement, the more substantial the goal, the more time investment is required.

What does this mean for program design?

Mapping the ACT or SAT’s math content to a student’s personal needs is key in determining the appropriate amount of preparation time for each student.

At Academic Approach, we take an aerial view of the long road ahead, consider all the relevant factors—growth goals, math level, optimal scheduling—and design a customized plan and timeline forContactsuccess.us now. We will help you plan for success and guide your student through a program of learning that drives improved test scores, academic outcomes, and college readiness.

Profile

We’ve seen students grow 15 points on the ACT and 500 points on the SAT. However, every student’s success is a function of two critical factors: 1) the number of hours of preparation, and 2) the number of practice tests taken.

The Student’s Schedule

The Student’s Growth Goal

• For a student taking Algebra II in junior year, they will likely reach their peak math performance by the end of the academic year.
