I’ve found that sometimes I forget to reflect on them, but it always seems to be easier during this time of the year with the magic of the holidays all around. imothy Daw has been with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP since his clerking days in law school. Today, he’s a shareholder of the firm and has seen its growth from a small group of attorneys developing a new kind of family law firm to one of the most respected and successful family law firms in the country. Since he began his practice as a family law attorney, Daw has embraced the Schiller DuCanto & Fleck philosophy: find creative solutions in uncharted territory of complex, sensitive, high networth family law cases. Over time, Daw has seen the evolution of divorce itself. In the early years of his practice, litigation was a prevalent means by which resolution was achieved. Now clients, working with their attorneys, are taking an active role in problem-solving and finding solutions outside of the court system through alternative dispute resolution. With courts backlogged due to the global pandemic, methods like mediation or collaboration are a great way to create a better, personal framework to solve issues. According to Daw, it is better to have the clients resolve their differences wherever possible with experienced attorney’s guidance looking for resolution as opposed to litigation. In the minority of cases, because of factual, legal, or emotional issues, litigation may be necessary. In these circumstances, given Daw’s wide breadth of experience including the litigation of highly contested matters, clients are able to utilize all avenues for resolution keeping their options open to the best possible results given the uncertainties of the future and the process. With Daw and his firm, the resources are available for any of the alternatives that may be necessary. Daw brings a wise confidence to each case, with the initial goals of first calming the situation down, identifying the key issues, and creating a strategy and plan to move things forward in his clients’ best interest. He avoids being reactive and simply setting a case’s path based solely in direct response to a crisis. “We ask people to pause and take a breath instead of just react-

ing,” says Daw. Instead of focusing solely on putting out short-term fires, Daw keeps the case’s larger focus on the long-term future. “You’re dealing with dozens and dozens of issues which can change over time,” says Daw. “But you also have to keep in mind, we’re dealing with now and the future.” Daw understands that it takes time, trust, and open communication to comprehend all the factual issues, relationship dynamics, and general background of a case. Daw works in tandem with his client to develop strategic goals and continues to refine them as the case evolves. Daw works with his clients as an interactive team. He gives thoughtful guidance and advice (and provides reality-based recommendations) based on his clients’ and their families’ needs and goals. Daw also relies on the immense resources available through the firm. With nearly 50 attorneys across the firm’s three offices, Daw can tailor his team to precisely fit his client’s needs. Daw empathizes with his clients and understands that divorce can be a difficult and often disheartening process, but his forwardfocus helps keep clients grounded. winning filmmaker, director, and writer who uses her gifts to spread cancer awareness through her films and projects. Born in Wheaton, Benedyk has traveled around the world most of her adult life. Even though she didn’t see herself moving back to the Chicago area permanently, she couldn’t be happier in the Hinsdale area: “For someone who always imagined I’d be bouncing from country to country living in different parts of the world at this point in my life, it’s been a real blessing to realize how much happiness I get from being here near all the people that matter so much to me. I do not take for granted what an abundance of love I have in my life.” While losing her sister, Kim, to cancer in 2020, Kristyn and her family started A Pint For Kim. This blood drive donates all of its proceeds to cancer patients in need of transfusions and strives to pay that kindness forward. The nonprofit’s first blood drive in March 2020 brought in over 500 donors, which helped them secure the record for the single-day, single-location blood drive in the state of Illinois. In addition to her successful blood drive, Benedyk has helped launch film and media programs at DePaul University, University of Cincinnati, and Elmhurst University. When she isn’t traveling, running A Pint For Kim, or working on a production, she enjoys spending time with her family and loved ones. here are real-life wonder women in this world and Clarendon Hills’ Kate Arquilla is absolutely one of them. As a married mother to three children under 5-yearsold, the founder of an educational blog with nearly 60,000 followers on Instagram, and the owner of a new store that curates all of the things she loves as a mom and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse—she seemingly does it all, somehow while being well dressed and with a smile on her face. “Some days it’s a lot,” says Arquilla, who at press time had just celebrated the one-month anniversary of Bumble Baby, her new downtown Clarendon Hills store named after her wildly popular blog. “But I know I’m not alone feeling that way. That was one of the reasons I started my blog—to connect with other moms who I knew were juggling different parts of motherhood.” When Arquilla graduated from college, she pursued a Masters of Science in Nursing from DePaul University in Chicago. After she finished, she took a job in the NICU at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. “When I was in school, I loved my rotation in Labor & Delivery,” Arquilla says. “But then when the baby was born, that’s all I could see. I am all about the babies. I went to the NICU and never looked back.” When word spread that Arquilla was a “baby nurse,” anyone who knew her or knew of her asked her all sorts of questions: “Why won’t my baby take a bottle?” “Does this poop look normal?” “Why is breastfeeding so hard?” “NICU RNs (Registered Nurses) are responsible for educating the families of our patients—we taught parents how to take care of their babies before they were discharged home,” she says, having left her post at Lurie Children’s last year to focus on things closer to home. “Coming from this NICU

experience, I understood how to educate families in a way that empowers them to be the primary caretaker of their babies. So, when new parents or expectant ones were asking me all sorts of questions, I realized how much parents yearned to know how to take care of their babies and how the internet lacked these resources,” Arquilla says. “I started Bumble Baby five years ago because parents needed information they could trust—some place they could go with their questions and get accurate, reliable, and research-based information. But it has grown into so much more—something I never expected— and I feel so lucky for that.” Today, the Bumble Baby website and Instagram account shares the wisdom and expertise of Arquilla and four others—Lauren McCarthy and Natalie Hnatuik—NICU RNs, Deema Soufan—Licensed Professional Counselor, and Renée Zetlin. Together, they share their professional knowledge and personal parenting stories on topics ranging from infant feeding and maternal mental health to sleep consulting and car seat installation. “What’s unique about Bumble Baby and having all of us work together is that none of us have had the same experience,” Arquilla explains. “We approach our followers and our community by supporting them in how they want to parent—we help them figure this out—whatever that looks like for their families.” For example, Arquilla is a certified sleep consultant. “I know that the sleep method I’m certified in won’t work for every family,” she says. “But our job is to find what will work best for you. That’s where our expertise comes in. We don’t push one method in any of our consultations—we take into consideration your personal goals, your family dynamics, and the reality of parenting in 2021.” This level of empathy and understanding is at the very heart of Bumble Baby. “I know that parenting can be very lonely, so it’s nice to have that sense of community that people have found with Bumble Baby,” she says. “But one of

the hard things about social media is that we often only see people’s good sides. We only see the wins and the beautiful moments. But everyone has those times in between that aren’t so pretty, and I think that those are what people need to see the most—especially as a vulnerable new mom. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect and look perfect, but that’s just not reality! Even when you have this life on Instagram, there are those low points and that’s normal. That’s how life goes.” One of the most powerful stories Arquilla has shared was the bout she had with postpartum depression (PPD) after her second baby. “It was hard to tell this story, but it was part of my life and I wanted other moms to know that you could get through this with the right support and treatment. It’s important for new parents to not only know the signs and symptoms of PPD, but that PPD and other perinatal mood disorders are common, and they are not their fault. Perinatal mood disorders don’t discriminate—we aren’t impermeable to them even with all the support systems in the world. “When I think about Bumble Baby, I started it to create a community for those who might be looking for it. What I realized is how much I needed it, too,” she says. “There is definitely a balance between sharing and sharing too much, but I think we lean into the education component first on the blog, and then share a little bit of our lives where it makes sense and is helpful.” Bumble Baby—the store—came as a result of the Bumble Baby community looking for a place where they could shop the products that Arquilla and her team love and recommend. “There was a lot of interest in Bumble Baby having a place where people could come and pick up the products that we

talk about,” says Arquilla. Although there is a team behind the Bumble Baby website, it’s Arquilla and one full-time employee—Meg Rogers— who make the magic happen at the Bumble Baby store on Prospect Avenue in Clarendon Hills. They source a number of brands from smaller women-owned businesses, including a few custom items for Bumble Baby. “Retail is a whole new world,” says Arquilla. “We are still in a process of trial and error, but have loved the progress so far.” What has worked is the nice mix of items that Arquilla has carefully collected, including her favorite pacifier, a dual nursing bra, and a line of flowy dresses that can be worn during pregnancy and after. “The workshops and programs we’ve offered in store have also been a hit,” Arquilla says. “It’s been so nice connecting with the Bumble Baby community in this different way and to meet their cute children.” Bumble Baby is gearing up for the holidays, prewrapping gift items for the moms and little ones on your list that you can put right under your tree. While online shopping isn’t yet available, Bumble Baby will ship items bought in store. Although it’s been a year since Arquilla has worked on the floor of a NICU, she says that Bumble Baby has afforded her the opportunity to stay connected to parents, similarly in the way she connected to patients and families in the NICU. “I never thought I’d leave the bedside,” Arquilla says. “But Bumble Baby has been a way for me to give back and support families when they need it most.”

he Bien Trucha Group has a way with names. Very cheeky stuff, especially if you’re versed in family-friendly Spanish slang. Virtually all of their Latininspired concepts boast clever names with dual meanings. For example, there’s A Toda Madre (“Totally Awesome”) in Glen Ellyn. Bien Trucha (“On Top of Your Game”) in Geneva. And Quiubo (What’s ’sup) in Naperville. That’s

a fun list. The Great Gritsbe’s Flying Food Show? Lawrence of Oregano? They’re the stuff great press releases are made of, but I think Bien Trucha may be nipping at their heels. Especially now that I’ve experienced the lyrically named Santa Cielo, a chic small-plate restaurant on the 5th floor of the Hotel Indigo in downtown Naperville. Say it with me: Santo Cielo. Sounds like something borrowed from a Gabriel García Márquez anthology, doesn’t it? Those twin soft “c’s”—my Spanglish patois simply doesn’t do them justice—are so richly evocative. Makes one think of all sorts of celestial glories. Cornflower blue skies. An endless horizon. Stars sprinkled across a dark sky. Properly translated, says general manager Tim Sandow, the phrase means “Good Heavens.” Which is about as pitch perfect of a name, on so many Roasted Rainbow Carrots with levels, as you could possibly pick for this drop-dead gorgeous dining room dill tahini sauce, garlic Greek in the sky. yogurt, and housemade dukkah Come to think of it, there is an air of magical realism to the space. And more houseplants than the set Seabass with Morof a 1970s sit-com. nay sauce, roasted Yes, the views are cauliflower florets, spectacular. Forget shaved fennel, and Fresno chili about trying to secure the normally coveted 7 p.m. reservation come wintertime. You want to be in your seats for the sunsets. Totally stunning. Not a bad seat in the house, either. Grab a corner table and the recessed lighting over the bar will absorb the dusky nectarine light and refract it—almost like neon arrows—back out into the horizon. Fortunately, Culinary Director Abel Cortes’ dapper platings are sharp enough to compete with the views. Most of Bien Trucha’s concepts are rooted in traditional Mexican flavors. Not so much here. If anything, Santo Cielo seems inspired by every country under the sun. If there’s a through-line, it’s that Cortes has a soft spot for sneaking in spicy condiments and sauces as replacements for his usual Mexican peppers. Fries arrive with harissa ketchup. The bao buns with kimchi aioli. And there’s an avocado pizzetta dotted with Fresno chiles, red onion, cilantro, and picked fennel. The best appetizers tend to be fired in the kitchen’s gas-fired Woodstone ovens. We enjoyed the house carrots, sprinkled with dukkah—a nutty Egypt dry rub—then set ablaze until they’re crusted over with a granola-like second skin. The accompanying garlic-laced Greek yogurt mixed with tahini acts as a worthy dip. If you’re willing to spring for a slightly pricier starter, try the fire-roasted oysters, which are given a modern Rockefeller treatment. Panko meets a roasted tomato broth, which tastes a lot like a tiny sips of a classy bouillabaisse served in scalloped shells. Although the flat-iron steak won’t disappoint. Note the ring of crimson Calabrian chile: a romesco with an extra kick. But going seafood up and down the menu may be the way to go. There’s nothing authentically Hawaiian about its poke tostada, but a touch of spice on the back end keeps things interesting. Follow it up with the best-looking and best-tasting dish of our evening: a crunchy sliver of sea bass, slippery and sweet, set against a classic Mornay sauce. isembarking from a direct flight—newly offered—from O’Hare to Santa Barbara’s airport, my husband and I took a quick drive six miles up the coast to enter a luxurious oasis. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean on California’s Gaviota coast lies the lush resort of The Ritz-Carlton Bacara,

Santa Barbara. Stepping into the impressive open-air lobby, we immediately felt like we were a world away. The gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows outlined by abundant local flora lent to the atmosphere of a private enclave on the California coast. Each window and open-air archway frames an astonishing view that simultaneously delights and relaxes. Palm trees blow in the wind, the salty ocean air lingers in the corners, and the brilliant sun shines down on the property. Spanning two miles of coastline, the resort presides over the coastal cliffs with unmatched ocean views. Designed in the traditional Spanish architecture style that abounds throughout California, the resort boasts white stucco villas, red terracotta roofs, and gardens of fragrant herbs and wildflowers. During our stay the resort was at full capacity, yet the property is so expansive that we felt like we were two of a handful of guests—with the resort maintaining its boutique feel throughout our entire visit. Our hacienda-inspired suite’s private patios are the perfect spot to enjoy

morning coffee with an ocean view. The suite’s Frette linens, marble bathroom, and stylish, yet rustic living space are a complement to California’s relaxed vibe. On property there is an array of activities to choose from, including guided eco-hikes, tennis, and the fitness center’s myriad of exercise classes. We opted to start our morning by joining an outdoor yoga class on the bluff—an expanse of verdant lawn overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Our instructor told us to keep an eye out for whales as the marine mammals were migrating through the Santa Barbara Channel and could be seen from our vantage point. We didn’t spot a whale during yoga, but as the morning fog burned off, we were left with a beautiful blue sky day that never disappoints on the California coast. The miles of beach coastline beckoned to us after yoga, and we spent the better part of the late morning strolling the beach with sand between our toes. After our morning excursions, we made our way to the adult pool — one of three zero-edged saline pools. Two of which, toward the lower level of the property, overlook the ocean and are lined by reservable private cabanas. Conveniently located across from the adult pool and spa is The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge. Designed with a modern, sleek, and welcoming feel, Club Lounge access allows guests to experience complimentary concierge and continuous food and beverage service throughout the day. of lounging by the pool, including partaking in the poolside chairs where our feet dangled in the water as we read, I made my way over to the spa. The Ritz-Carlton Spa Bacara, Santa Barbara is 42,000 square feet of indulgence. Stepping into the sanctuary of the spa one is immediately entranced by the sky-high heights of the entryway and soothed by the Zen atmosphere. Guests can treat themselves to acupuncture, massages, or do as I did and try the Oxygen Facial. The Oxygen Facial’s innovative breakthrough beauty treatment combats signs of aging using hyperbaric oxygen to infuse a combination of antioxidants and hyaluronic acids into the skin. The facial, performed with Natura Bissé products includes an extensive face massage and is pure relaxation resulting in glowing skin for days. For those seeking more active adventure, the resort partners with a local company, Cal Coast Adventures, that offers an array of activities including stand-up paddleboarding, ocean kayaking, surf lessons, and mountain biking. Guests can also head to the nearby towns of Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valley where vineyards produce highly regarded chardonnay, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and Rhone blends. Spend the day exploring the area with a variety of hikes, stopping to take in the scenery and taste local wines at one of the many wineries. Whether choosing a day of local activities or relaxation on-site at the spa and pools, unwind in the evening with a craft cocktail from San Setto, a contemporary Japanese restaurant featuring sushi, sashimi, nigiri, and other shareables. Situated atop a cliffside bluff, sip your cocktail while overlooking the changing colors of the sky as the sun dips behind the horizon. Continue your evening dining at San Setto, or, do as we did and dine at Angel Oak. As the sun continued its languid trajectory and dipped lower in the sky, we watched the sun set over the Pacific Ocean and the stars emerge in the sky. Angel Oak is a modern take on the traditional steakhouse serving an assortment of aged and prime cuts paired with the deepest wine cellar in the region and panoramic ocean views. Gorgeous sightings of the Channel Islands off the coast combined wonderfully with our entire dining experience. We enjoyed oysters, which in lieu of a traditional red wine mignonette, Chef Efe Onoglu pairs the delicacy with an apple and jalapeno mignonette which brings

A breathaking entrance to the spa reception out the flavors of the sea. Next up was the crispy buttermilk quail which may be one of our favorite dishes of all time. Covered in burnt sumac, celery shavings and a hint of lime sauce, the quail was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The dish’s pixie tangerines and pickled mushrooms combined together in an explosive flavor combination. The salmon was served on a bed of saffron risotto beside stuffed zucchini blossoms and confit vine tomatoes. The salmon, along with the halibut drizzled in a yuzu beurre blanc sauce, were cooked to perfection and a highlight of our time at the resort. Each of the resort’s six restaurants offers its own twist on a successful pairing of ocean views and local flavors. From A5 Japanese Wagyu and local abalone paired with vintage wines by the glass at Angel Oak, to Latin fare at ‘O’ Bar + Kitchen, to wine flights at the Wine Tasting Room, The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara’s dining showcases the best of the area. The resort’s Ambassadors of the Environment (AOTE) program is ideal for family’s traveling with young children. ne of my goals as a physician is to educate my patients and their families about managing their healthcare. This includes a strong focus on prevention and empowering the patient by education. Being treated by a top doc or well-known specialist for a condition or an acute problem makes sense, especially when we are searching for cutting-edge treatments and the best outcome possible. However, my job as a primary care physician is to really focus on our patients’ preventive care, and hopefully, they won’t develop major medical problems. We do this with frequent visits and communication with our patients. Empowering our patients to take charge of their health has been vital in keeping them healthier and leading a more independent lifestyle. Some of the more common health care preventive measures include mammogram, colonoscopy, PSA level checks, vaccinations, cardiac screening, blood work, exercise programs, and diet modification. Most primary care physicians are managing these points with their patients. If not brought up by your doctor, be proactive and ask and expect a plan to address these preventive measures. When dealing with a chronic condition like high blood pressure, chronic pain, or diabetes, ask for all treatment options, as no

two patient cases are alike, and having tailored medical care provides better focused outcomes. Sometimes getting a second opinion or a specialist involved can be helpful in providing a fresh perspective. There is a lot of information on the internet about medical diseases and conditions. Be careful of where you are getting the information. I always encourage patients to research, but to identify accredited websites that discuss evidence-based medical care. There are great sites on holistic approaches to treat conditions as well but should be discussed with your physician prior to starting any kind of overthe-counter supplement or treatment. Avoid getting false hope by reading one person’s experience or cure and assuming that will automatically work for you. There is also no exact way to verify that their story is even true. With COVID-19 now approaching two years, prevention has become even more important. In summary, work closely with your trusted primary care physician who should be able to navigate and assist you. Remember that preventing a health-related problem will most often have a better outcome than waiting for something adverse to occur and then trying to treat it.
