PUBLISHER’S NOTE
February is a robust issue packed with people you should know and beautiful coverage of several events to join in next time around.
Deco at the Drake is a sneak peek at this year’s Tablescapes theme. This unofficial kickoff to Spring is the signature fundraiser of the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary. Traditions need to be shaken up sometimes, leading the group to move the location to The Drake Oak Brook.
In a bit of synchronicity, Dinner Date takes us to The Colonial Room, a storied favorite enjoying an elegant revival.
Our area is home to many talented artists and passionate collectors. Joining several successful galleries is Virgil Catherine gallery, a hot spot for contemporary artwork, lively events, and philanthropy. Meet the force behind the canvases in New Year. New Space.
grateful to introduce you to entrepreneurs like Cam in our Publisher’s Profiles. You’ll want to spend some time getting to know the world-class professionals featured in our Premier Doctors section. These phenomenal women and men are accessible to us in times of wellness and moments when we need a little extra help. Having beautiful parks and shops is wonderful. Living in a center of medical innovation is too.
Our Living + Giving coverage is packed with people who embody beauty through their actions. Many local organizations are off to a strong 2023 start thanks to their generosity.
Enjoy the pictures, and good reading.

Hinsdale Living’s guide to the area’s people, places, and things that you must know about
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HINSDALE HUMANE SOCIETY
ounded in 1953 by six concerned Hinsdale women, Hinsdale Humane Society (HHS) was the first Humane Society in DuPage County and likely the only one where animals were driven around in a Cadillac Deville. The can-do spirit of those caring ladies continues today. The board and dedicated volunteers continue to advocate, educate, and adopt out pets – 1800 annually since moving to the new location, The Tuthill Family Pet Rescue and Resource Center operated by Hinsdale Humane Society in 2018. HHS is toasting their 70- year milestone this year and ushering in a new decade of hope, healing, and love. hinsdalehumanesociety.org

READ IT
Anyone who remembers Less Than Zero will want to read the latest from Bret Easton Ellis, The Shards. Even those who never read the 1980s classic will appreciate this mystery set in an exclusive Los Angeles high school. Not truly a prequel, Easton Ellis did begin writing The Shards when he was 19. Early reviews are raves and we think this racy thriller will be great motivation to stay on the treadmill a little longer. Available at Barbara’s Bookstore and Barnes & Noble.
WAVE IT
When your Superbowl party drifts over to the ping pong table, reach for these Tiffany & Company table tennis paddles. You’ll instantly elevate your game. Crafted from pure American walnut and available in classic black or beautiful turquoise with sterling silver brand plaques. Swoon. This dreamy set also boasts leather grips. tiffany.com
WEAR IT
MAÄT Founder and Designer, Fiona Devaney, took her first yoga class as a teen. She loved her practice but not how disruptive it felt to have to stop and grab a blanket for extra knee cushioning. After working as a model, earning degrees in Fashion Design and Production Management from FIT, plus a yoga teacher certification, she continued to tinker with the idea of a distraction-free legging. Her quest fell into place after surfing through a bad knee injury with no pain. Her wetsuit’s knee pads were uniquely shaped and ribbed like a moto pant. The MAÄT 1.0 Legging debuted in 2021 and has become a favorite of yogis and jet setters alike. $148, maatactive.com

KIMBERLY O’GORMAN
grew up in Palos Hills, the youngest of three children. The leadership qualities that eventually led to her being named first female partner of Professional Wealth Advisors were evident early. In high school Kimberly played softball, worked on the student newspaper, participated in Youth and Government Club and served as vice president of DECA. More success followed with a degree from Lewis University with high honors and Certified Financial Planner certificate from DePaul University.
Kimberly’s passion is helping others. First, by helping families make financial decisions that will help them reach their future goals. Secondly, through her deep involvement with the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary, both on the Auxiliary Board, where she will take on the co-president role later this year and as a member of the Hinsdale Auxiliary, working on Tablescapes. Kimberly has two grown children, Shaleigh and Michael.

The Collection of Fashion Designer Arthur McGee comes to the auction block at Hindman.
WORDS BY LAURA LAYFER TREITMAN / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HINDMAN AUCTIONS
the atelier of American couturier Charles James. That important connection led Hindman’s Couture & Luxury Accessories Director and Senior Specialist Timothy Long to feel an immediate bond with McGee. “When I was at the Chicago History Museum, I curated the exhibition Charles James: Genius Deconstructed, in 2011, so to know McGee’s link to James made the opportunity for research and scholarship here even more exciting,” shares Long. “For those of us in the fashion and costume history field, McGee is one of those names that is widely known yet not discussed or documented nearly enough—until now.”
Even while he was employed at other firms, McGee always maintained clothing creations that he sold independently. In the manner of high-end salons like that of his former boss Charles James, McGee soon courted a roster of celebrities and entertainers such as Sybil Burton and Cicely Tyson. In the 1960s, McGee opened his first store in New York City’s St. Mark’s Place, and a second followed in Miami, Florida. When he was honored by The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, displaying many of his sophisticated silhouettes, they aptly referred to McGee as the “Dean of AfricanAmerican Fashion Designers.”
The Collection of Fashion Designer Arthur McGee, to be auctioned at Hindman on March 14, 2023, brings a selection of 45 ensembles and documents, direct from private hands to a public audience. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1933, McGee learned the art of dressmaking from his mother. Those skills were passed down to her son, who at 18 years old won a design competition and scholarship to attend the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City. He would also pursue studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology before starting his career and establishing a namesake label. Then and now, McGee was not only celebrated for his talents but recognized as a trailblazer in the industry. The net proceeds of the sale of this 45-piece collection will benefit a scholarship for emerging fashion designers from Arthur McGee Legacy, LLC.
In the 1950s, McGee is believed to have been the first African American to run an apparel showroom’s design studio on Seventh Avenue, the garment district of Manhattan. He initially worked in
McGee passed in 2019, and it has been two of his longtime clients turned close friends who took on the roles of overseeing his estate. They are Maxine Gordon, an author, archivist, jazz historian, and currently a Radcliffe Fellow at The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, and Johnetta Shearer, a realtor at Beachfront Realty in Hallandale Beach, Florida, and a Certified Mastectomy Fitter with MARJ Medical in Boca Raton. Together, they have spent the last few years organizing sketches, photographs, and clothing into a testament of McGee’s legacy.
“At Hindman, we have had experience with archival materials,” notes Long, “having sold that of Geoffrey Beene, for example, giving us a knowledge and understanding of what can be worn and what pieces might fill voids for museums and other institutions or private collectors seeking to acquire.” The total of 15 lots comprise multiple pieces within each grouping, including some separates, and are primarily divided by decades spanning from the 1960s-1980s. “It’s fascinating to consider the glimpse we can now see at McGee’s practice such as origami, just like the type kids play with, that he used

for exploring folds and pleats as a type of pattern,” remarks Long. Below, an interview with Gordon and Shearer provides additional insight into their interactions with McGee, and his contributions, past, present, and future.
Can you talk about how you both initially came to know McGee?
MG: I first met McGee when he had a boutique in New York City. It was a very lively period in the East Village in the late ‘60s. He began to make clothes for me and we became friends for the rest of his life.
JS: I met McGee in Miami, Florida in 1974 when I was the guest of my late friend, singer Phyllis Hyman, who was performing at a fashion show. Arthur McGee’s clothing was featured at the show. I saw his assistant wearing a dress that I learned later was called “The Shower Curtain Dress” and just by seeing that dress, I had to know more about him and the clothes. I became a client that year, 1974.
What was it like working with him? Do each of you have a favorite memory to share?
MG: McGee wanted his clients to wear beautiful garments made from the best fabrics and he wanted them to be comfortable and affordable. When there was a special occasion, we shopped for fabric together and all the people in the fabric showrooms knew him and loved spending time with him. He never seemed to be in a hurry. He made all my maternity clothes in 1978, and before that, in 1975, had begun to make garments for my late husband Dexter Gordon. In 1987, Arthur made all the outfits for Dexter and me for the Oscar ceremony (Dexter was nominated as lead actor in the film Round Midnight) and for the events for a week in Hollywood. McGee also attended the Oscars with us!
JS: It was wonderful to work with McGee—a pleasure to be in his company. He was funny, brutally honest, and just simply cool. His knowledge of fashion that he imparted not only to me but to all his clients is priceless. He really and truly cared about how his clients looked in his clothes. He taught us how to wear them, how to accessorize and how to care for them. We are still wearing pieces he made for us after all these years.
When did the idea to catalog McGee’s archives come to fruition?
MG: Before McGee’s death, he appointed Johnetta and me as his Executors and talked about how he hoped his work would not be forgotten. We began to talk about collecting his designs and establishing a scholarship in his name for emerging
AUCTION
young designers. We formed the Arthur McGee Legacy LLC and will continue searching for more of his classic designs.
JS: I had previously participated in Hindman auctions and purchased items. I mentioned this to Maxine, we talked about it, decided to pursue it and do the necessary work. I contacted Hindman and met with Timothy Long, and the rest is history. We are delighted to be working with Hindman on the auction and are making plans to use profits from the sale to establish a scholarship fund in Arthur McGee’s name that will support emerging young designers.
What is your great hope in seeing McGee’s name and work carry on?
MG: We would like to remind the public that McGee was the first Black designer on Seventh Avenue and was an inspiration to many Black designers who followed after him. He traveled widely and was inspired by clothing he saw in Asia and Africa and his legacy is surely an international inspiration to many.
JS: My desire with this auction is to help educate people about McGee and have them learn what an extraordinarily talented African American designer he was and to keep his legacy alive in museums around the world for the world to see and know his work. His clothes are practical, affordable, timeless designs in fabrics that were classic as well. I feel that he deserves the recognition this auction can give him and that museums will acknowledge his importance as well.
A favorite piece in the sale?
MG: I would say for me it is Lot 5. It has pieces made for me from African fabric he kept rolled up in the studio. He kept adding pieces over a long period and was very pleased with the outfits and the way they could easily be folded to pack for travel.
JS: Mine is the rhinestone black cashmere coat, Lot 9. This coat is a piece that McGee did for the Coty Awards. I always wanted to get that coat to Prince because he would have been the person to wear that coat, but I never got the opportunity. The rhinestones on it are set by hand which makes it even more special.
Bidding for the March 14 auction will begin at 10 a.m. and will be available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room. Registration for the auction is available at hindmanauctions.com/ auctions/1156-spring-fashion-accessories. For more information, visit hindmanauctions.com.

ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL: FINDING THE RIGHT LAWYER WHEN THINGS GO WRONG
WORDS BY BRENDAN HAMMER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
Recently, I needed a new barber and so I asked for recommendations. I also looked online for people with strong reviews. The gentleman I went to was amiable, professional, and highly recommended. But the experience just wasn’t great. We didn’t exactly hit it off, the conversations were stilted, and the cut was a bit underwhelming to be honest. It might sound absurd, but I don’t think he understood what I really wanted. I had to ditch this decent but lackluster barber and I now go to someone who makes it seem like he’s been cutting my hair since childhood.
Many people find lawyers the same way they try out restaurants, hotels, hair stylists, dentists, designers, and trainers—on the basis of a recommendation. Typically, a neighbor, family member, friend, colleague, or parent from school passes along a name. And we take those recommendations on a kind of faith. With lawyers, we may interview the person and ask some questions, but we are relying heavily on the experience and validation of a third party. That experience of our acquaintance was a function of many unique factors, not all of them rational, not all of them generally applicable, and many of them not applicable to our own specific circumstances, finances, personalities or needs.
In divorce, certain attributes are necessary for a lawyer—but they are not all sufficient for the client. At a minimum, a good family law attorney should be experienced, knowledgeable, creative, and professionally well regarded. But in a divorce or custody case, you are entrusting everything you value to a third party. Your financial future and the future of your children are all on the line. It is both a legal and emotional process. You will spend countless hours emailing, talking, and on Zoom with the lawyer. She or he will come to know more about you and your family than almost anyone who is not a family member, close friend, or therapist. The relationship between an attorney and a client, therefore, is a critical one.
Unfortunately, it can be very hard to tell whether your lawyer will be a good fit. If I have any advice for people contemplating the services of a matrimonial law attorney, it is do your homework and also pay close attention to your communication. Obtain as much data as possible from as many sources as possible. The experiences of others are not irrelevant, they are simply insufficient. Next, the initial consultation should be an opportunity for you to learn as much about your potential attorney as it is for that professional to learn about you and your case. Does the lawyer interrupt?
Demonstrate understanding? Ask follow-up questions or probe for understanding and context? Does the lawyer talk only about himself or herself? Do you hear only war stories and accolades? Do you feel you are being lectured? Does the person tell you only what you want to hear? Does the lawyer over-confidently tell you time frames, dollar amounts, and outcomes without having detailed facts? Are you being “sold” on the lawyer or are you learning what it would be like to work with him or her? Can the lawyer explain things in a way that you understand? At root, do you feel like you want to spend a year of your life working closely with this person? Critically, and if so, will this person be your primary interface or will another Partner or an Associate be assigned to serve that role? Will the lawyer personally handle your matter in court or in mediation? If not, why not? Most importantly, what is the level of emotional intelligence that she or he demonstrates in talking to you? It can be hard to process all of these potentially relevant data points in the conference and maybe a follow up chat is needed. Do not feel embarrassed about asking for one or even in explaining what concerns or questions you have. There are many family law attorneys and it can be hard to find the person best suited to represent you. We are all unique and each have emphases, outlooks, philosophies, and approaches that differentiate us from our peers in the law. For almost all of us, before we met our spouse or partner, we dated other people. We were finding the right fit. We did not simply rely on the “reviews” of our spouse’s former romantic intimates. Similarly, we should not think twice about consulting a wide array of lawyers before “committing” to one. In the end, you must feel comfortable, secure, and confident that you are in good hands and also that the person you retain will be able to work with and for you, constructively, collegially, and creatively.

Tablescapes kicks off the Spring social season with a stylish take on everyone’s favorite ladies’ luncheon .
WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR AND MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
Whether the weather is warm and sunny or (more likely) a wintery mix, the annual Tablescapes luncheon presented by the Hinsdale Auxiliary of The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary has become the moment when many local women emerge from hibernation, ready for a beautiful day with friends. New dresses are debuted, jewelry for spring break trips is snapped up at vendor tables, and a festive spirit fills the air.
Tablescapes made its debut in the 1990s and auxiliary members work hard each year to carry beloved traditions forward while also imbuing the afternoon with fresh thrills.
This year’s benefit co-chairs Linda Davis and Melissa Goebel along with Hinsdale Auxiliary president Laura Preusser chose this year’s theme, “Deco at the Drake” to celebrate and honor the city of Chicago, which is home to the most stunning examples of stylish and elegant art deco design. The date, 3.12, is a nod to our beloved city and cultural hub.
“Chicago is known for its great culinary scene, loyal sports fans and revered music venues, but it’s also recognized as a leading architectural city, in particular for art deco design in the 1920s era,” said Davis.
Tablescapes, the signature fundraising event of the Hinsdale Auxiliary, will feature six stylish, sleek and sophisticated table settings and vignettes to match the theme, including Speak Easy to Me, Puttin’ on the Ritz and Age of Hollywood
First time attendees should know that each of these breathtaking displays are a part of the day’s raffle. Raffle tickets may be purchased with one’s luncheon seat or at the event. It’s not unusual for ladies who arrive with raffle tickets in hand to buy handfuls more when they spot the designs that members create. “Our guests can win carefully curated art deco-themed table settings that bring the glitz and glamour of the roaring 1920s to any 2020s dinner party,” said Geobel.
Guests will also enjoy a three-course lunch, live music, shopping from more than 20 premier boutiques, silent auction items and more.
“We invite everyone to come shop, dine, bid on auction items and enter to win art deco-themed Tablescapes for a good cause,” says Zografos-Preusser, adding, “For more than 20 years, the Hinsdale Auxiliary has presented Tablescapes in support of IWS Family Health, a wonderful resource for healthcare services and education for medically underserved families in the Chicagoland area.”
Established in 1913, the Auxiliary is comprised of nine chapters and nearly 600 members throughout the Chicagoland area. Since its inception, the Auxiliary has donated more than $140 million to IWS. Due to the unwavering dedication of members and supporters – is the clinic’s largest single donor each year. One hundred percent of the proceeds from Tablescapes will go to serving patients at IWS Family Health.
It is an incredible day for groups of friends that creates lasting memories for those who attend and lasting good health for patients of IWS Family Health. The Drake Oak Brook is the perfect setting for Tablescapes. It is slightly smaller than previous locations, which means tickets will sell out even faster than usual. Regulars and first timers should snap up seats, tables, and raffle tickets sooner rather than later.
Tablescapes “Deco at the Drake” is Sunday, March 12, 2022, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m.at The Drake Oak Brook. Tickets are available at hinsdaleiws.com, flash raffles appear on Instagram @hinsdaleiws.

Virgil Catherine Gallery Brings a Whole
New Look and Vibe to Hinsdale
NEW SPACE.
Bringing a fresh take on art to the streets of Hinsdale and making its way up onto the walls of local residents, shops, and collectors alike, Catherine Ponakala, owner of Virgil Catherine Gallery, is serving this town with a whole new look and vibe. For over two years, Virgil Catherine Gallery has been captivating the eyes of locals with handpicked curations from emerging artists all across the globe.
Armed with a master’s degree in social work, Ponakala ran her own business in the practice for 10 years. As a social worker, she often experienced the darkness that came with the job but offset it with the lighter things in life. “I think the balance of the sadness and tragedy I saw as a social worker was balanced by my love of art,” she says.
Ponakala, who has been a Hinsdalean for almost 20 years, eventually sold off her business after her third child to focus on family. Years later when Covid lockdowns were first instituted, the mother of five found there was a large movement of city dwellers moving to Hinsdale, which also brought about younger families. Having always been active in the art world, many of Ponakala’s friends happened to be artists and she soon found herself as a gateway to local art collectors and enthusiasts seeking pieces that may be more difficult to find in the suburbs.
At the same time, Guy Stanley Philoche, a Haitian-American artist featured in numerous magazines and television shows, reached out to Ponakala. “Right before Covid, he had a sold-out show in NYC and then the city shut down as we all did,” she says. “He called me to tell me he was going to use the money he made
to purchase works from emerging artists and from there it blew up.”
After assisting private clients for some time, Ponakala decided it was time to open a brick-and-mortar space. Enter Virgil Catherine Gallery.
When the gallery first opened, many of the artists featured were from the Philoche collection which set the reputation high for the gallery. “Now many artists seek the gallery out and ask to be part of the gallery which I am really proud of.” Currently, Ponakala represents a variety of artists who are in a multitude of mediums from oils, mixed media, acrylic, and sculpture. “The gallery represents artists from as far away as Madrid to local artists,” she says. “I want people to walk in and find something that really resonates with them and the only way to do that is to have variety.”
The gallery was once on Washington Street set across from its current location it stands in today. This initial space was larger but spread across three rooms lacking natural light in the middle and back rooms. “The new space is long and all the works can be encompassed in one room which really brings the pieces together in a cohesive way,” she says. “I like to say they are all together telling each other stories.”
Walking past the space, not only will you be greeted with the friendly faces of Catherine as well as Deyen Missbrenner, there’s an edgy feel that gives Hinsdale some legit street cred in the art community. But it just doesn’t stop there. Ponakala is all about the community having served in different roles from walking dogs at the Hinsdale Humane Society to actively participating in charities, and even serving as PTO president at Oak Elementary School.
HINSDALE LIVING 65
“There’s nothing better than hearing a collector tell you why a certain work resonates with them.”
“That support extends to seeing retailers in town be successful and to shop local,” she says. Additionally, Ponakala has made it a community affair supporting fellow retailers often co-marketing events. “Many of them have also been gracious enough to display our works to reach a border audience and for that, I’m really thankful,” she says.
Taking it onto the online community, one visit to their Instagram page, and the addiction begins. “Our Instagram certainly doesn’t follow the more traditional gallery trek,” she says. “I try to make it fun, to say ‘anyone can be an art collector,’ and the process doesn’t need to be off-putting or intimidating.” Find the latest works and what the gallery is up to, all set to upbeat, fun music. “I try to be inclusive in the process and give people a look behind the scenes through our social media.”
Virgil Catherine Gallery holds three artist receptions a year. “Our artists fly in from everywhere and really spend time getting to know the collectors, visiting their homes, and just being out in the community,” she says. “The gallery has also co-hosted The Influence of Art on the Home panels with the Dawn McKenna
Group in our collector’s homes which really accents how art, design, and architecture define a space and a home.” The gallery’s most recent event was its first Cocktail and Collectors dinner which was a way for the artists and collectors to meet and mingle.
Ponakala tells their clients art doesn’t need to match the home, but rather be an outer expression of them and their home should tell their story. Connecting artists with collectors, Ponakala is that conduit to their story. “The artist begins the story and the collector finishes it, each bringing their unique experiences to the table,” she says. “There is nothing better than hearing a collector tell you why a certain work resonates with them.”
The connection between the artists and their collectors is really key to the experience of the gallery. “People want to have that connection to what hangs in their home and that is what the gallery provides.”

DINNER DATE Time after Time
As The Drake in Oak Brook resurrects its storied reputation, the Colonial Room is busy reintroducing diners to some time-honored classics.
WORDS BY PETER WREN / PHOTOGRAPHT BY LISA SCIASCIA
HINSDALE LIVING 98
The bar in The Colonial Room makes everyone feel like visiting royalty.
One can assume that plenty of discriminating travelers flipped open the October 2022 issue of Conde Naste Traveler to peruse its annual readers’ choice awards, only to discover an unfamiliar selection sitting comfortably at No. 47?
Some subscribers must have instinctively reached for their reading glasses to ensure their tired old eyes weren’t deceiving them. What was that spot—in Oak Brook, Illinois—that cracked the top 50 hotels in the world?
Answer: The Drake Oak Brook.
The other hotels on the list? Very familiar names. At No. 1: The Cheval Blanc St. Tropez, recently restored to its former glory by the LVMH corporation. Yes. Yes. We all knew that would make the list. Same could be said for many others. Perennial head-turners like The Raffles in Istanbul, Turkey. The Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. The Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. The Athanee hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
But what to make of this new entrant? The Drake in Oak Brook.
So let it be said that the secret’s officially out. After years of racking up glowing local press for its ambitious facelift, love for the Drake Oak Brook has officially gone international.
Much of the credit must, of course, go to owners Jim and Tely Nagle. When the coupled purchased the hotel in 2013, they didn’t just rescue it from a rendezvous with a wrecking ball. They made a commitment to re-infusing the 154-room four-story property with the grace and sophistication that made it such an iconic spot
decades ago.
Much has already been written about the spruced-up rooms, the sharp new lobby and landscaping efforts that have the 10 acre property glowing again. After all, this is a hotel that, decades ago, catered to world-famous celebrities, from Frank Sinatra and Rock Hudson to Arnold Palmer and King Charles of England.
And yet, far less ink has been spilled about some of the timeless dishes and dining traditions that the hotel’s Colonial Room has worked equally hard to preserve
Currently, the Colonial Room is located just off the main lobby in a small yet charmingly little nook. It’s a compact but homey. The color scheme may be modern—the walls sheathed in a cool slate gray—but the remainder of the space is a throwback to an earlier time and place. Cue the raging fireplace. The antique chairs made of dark woods. Flowers on the tables. And nostalgia-fueled oil paintings of newlyweds kissing, wine glasses swirling and young children running gleefully through streets.
Very Edith Wharton meets RH. Old and new. Classic yet contemporary. Polished by approachable.
If you’re of a certain age, taking supper in the Colonial Room is likely to rekindle all sorts of fond memories of wonderful dining traditions. The dining room’s soundtrack, which slowly cycled through classical music, love songs and 1930s Big Band songs during our visit, was turned muted enough not to drone out our conversations. No QR codes in sight here, either. Quite the opposite. Guests are handed cocktail books and straight-forward menus emblazoned with large type.
The pace of service is downright leisurely. Should you open with

a cocktail, you’ll be able savor it in peace, long before anyone asks you for your dinner order. It’s the sort of place, in all frankness, that was built for extended conversation.
Order the Drake’s most famous starter, its Bookbinder soup, and it’ll arrive with oyster crackers and a shot glass of dry sherry—the latter to cut through what is ostensibly a roux-heavy red snapper chowder
Thankfully, the Colonial Room’s bookbinder soup is true to my memories of it: It’s almost gumbo-like, both peppery and rich. It’s a perfect mid-winter offering, as are many of the classical options on the Colonial Room’s menu.
Chilean sea bass that’s dressed with a teriyaki-like sweet soy glaze and served with black forbidden rice and carrots.
Our favorite dish? The Berkshire pork shank, braised in a Guinness-inspired reduction, which was beyond fork-tender. Simply slide bone across your plate and the meat will unfurl for you, no effort required.
Bee’s Knees:
Although a traditional Bee’s Knees tends to relies solely on gin, honey and fresh lemon juice, the Drake’s version tops it off wit an extra pour of orange juice, making it a brunchy kind of tipple.
I suppose some may be tempted to sample from the more contemporary side of the menu—items like avocado toast point, vegan eggplant roulade, a Moroccan-style pork chop. If you’re so inclined, opt for Ezequiel Dominguez’s rather daring burger, made for a juicy mix of ground sirloin, short rib and brisket that topped with flavor accents from across the globe.
The burger isn’t only smeared with a chipotle aioli and melted gruyere cheese, it’s topped with piquillo peppers and fried onion strings, which is all served on a garliclilted bun. Atop it all sits a giant grilled jalapeno pepper, which can be transferred onto the burger or left off for those who can’t take the heat.
But most people come to The Colonial Room to revisit classic dishes that are virtually impossible to find anywhere these days. Where else, after all, can you order a grilled crown filet of beef, perfectly prepared? Or opt for a take-me-as-I-am
Just make sure you leave enough room for two things after dinner: The Drake’s creamy limoncello mousse dessert and an afterdinner stroll around the hotel’s grounds. Even during wintertime, there’s something magical about the expansiveness of the resort, which is aglow with hundred of tiny lights and whimsical statues.
A dinner and a stroll will help you understand why this charming place wasn’t only worth saving but why it’s winning over a new generation of travelers the world over.
Lavender Drake:
Despite its name, this drink will arrive looking clear as a martini, but one sip—a botanical swirl of vodka, St.— Germain, lavender simple syrup and sparkling wine—will have you thinking of French gardens in the springtime.

LUXE RECESS
Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa redefines what a luxury family holiday in the Caribbean looks like.
WORDS BY THERESA DEMARIA
JOURNEY HINSDALE LIVING 102
Upon entering the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa, my first impression was the beautiful modern design, and my second impression was that many families are staying here—families with young children, multi-generational families, and families with friends and their families.
I think this speaks to the fact the Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa is family friendly.
With so many amenities, it’s not hard to see why. This upscale Costa Mujeres resort was officially inaugurated as one of most
luxurious and sophisticated allinclusive hotels in the Caribbean.
Forget any preconceptions you might have about all-inclusive. No tacky plastic wrist bands and no watered-down drinks here. This property offers 5-star services, dining, and accommodation, yet with the convenience of all-inclusive. Dining encompasses Mexican, Italian, Asian, and international favorites—with restaurants and bars for all tastes. You could enjoy a new dining experience every night during a one-week vacation. Your bar choices include a swim-up bar, beach bars, sports bar, lobby bar, a sky bar, and more are all included during your stay.
Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa takes family holidays to the next level. Stunning pools, landscaped gardens, and a white sandy beach makes for a spectacular setting.
It’s a sprawling luxury resort with a little bit of everything for everyone, including those vacationing without families. After all, it is a 5-star beachfront hotel that happens to be in a privileged spot of Mexican Caribbean, Costa Mujeres beach, and is only 30 min away from the town of Cancún and its international airport.
Two messages were clearly delivered during my short stay at Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa. The first was top notch customer service. Every staff member had a smile and was more than eager to make your stay the best experience you can possibly have.
Second, this is a uber Eco-friendly resort—from electric carts to an electric boat water cab, you will find that great effort was taken to respect the local and worldwide environment at the resort. The natural environment is reflected in the resort’s contemporary architecture with innovative use of vertical gardens, as well as a central lagoon that allows guests to shuttled from room to restaurant or from spa to bar aboard skippered electric boats. It’s a fun way to get around if you don’t fancy

walking or taking one of the chauffeured buggies. Guest suites are well designed and elegantly furnished, including many with a large terrace. In addition to the suites, there are fabulous swim-up suites and duplex loft suites. Families can also expect lots of thoughtful touches for their kids from beach kits to their own towels and robes. If you’re looking for VIP service, then opt for the “Family Selection” for an enhanced premium experience with access to the best sports facilities, finedining restaurants, an upgraded all-inclusive offering, and access to select facilities as the adults-only TRS Coral Hotel.
I was impressed with the volume of activities you can enjoy during your stay. The Grand Palladium features seven restaurants and four swimming pools, one of them exclusively for children.
The setting, at the northeast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a place of real natural beauty. Make the most of the Caribbean location with activities such as snorkeling and diving. If you’re looking for the Caribbean as it used to be, the pristine protected beaches and the island national park of Isla Contoy are a very short excursion away—all magical.

Here is where specialist coaches from the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar in Manacor provide unique tennis programs for all ages, which have been developed by Nadal and his technical team.
In addition, the resort offers impressive spa facilities, luxury water circuit, and extensive treatment list at the world-class
Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness Centre. It’s a two-story, dedicated space with an immense water-circuit, a sun terrace, infinite pool, juice bar, steam room, ice cave, salt cave, sauna, and weightless floating pool which I had always wanted to try. The rooftop juice bar with private pool was the optimal spot to watch the sunset.
Between the crystal-clear turquoise waters and breathtaking views, the innovative cuisine, modern suites, and a multitude of entertainment options and activities, this made for an epic Mexican Caribbean getaway.

This year’s Holiday Ball sold out before invitations were in the mail, a testament to both how beloved this institution is and how powerfully aligned the chairs and committee were in their dedication to achieving big fundraising numbers. Money will go toward all programs, but specifically to support The Counseling Center, which has seen increased demand in the past few years and where all members of the community can seek support when needed. thecommunityhouse.org

Train like a CHAMPION
Cam Paulson brings his experience as D1 strength and conditioning coach to Strive Village Strength and Conditioning.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
When you’ve been a strength coach for the football teams at The Ohio State University, University of Florida, and The University of Toledo, you’re going to run your fitness company with tenacity.
That’s exactly what Cam Paulson of Strive does.
After helping elite college athletes develop physically and mentally, Paulson moved to Chicago to work in the private sector. He initially worked with some former colleagues but struck out on his own with the help from some investors in and around Chicago.
Paulson is the owner of Strive Village Strength and Conditioning, a gym he originally founded in 2017 in downtown Chicago, He now also has locations in Wilmette, and Western Springs. The business focuses on full-body workouts for individuals who are fully committed to becoming or staying strong. It’s not for those looking for a casual workout.
“We pride ourselves in providing simple, efficient strength training in an environment that has a lot of energy and people who just love to work hard,” Paulson says. “We’ve got really hungry clientele who want to learn how to train or have a place where they know they can come in and really get pushed and have a workout that can complement their lifestyles.”
Paulson says you can see the company’s philosophy on the door when you walk in. It says if you don’t like discomfort and a chaotic environment, then Strive isn’t for you.
“That’s a little bit of an edgy statement but I don’t like to waste time with people who aren’t ready to work,” he says. “I tell people right away on the phone or via email that if they don’t know about us, what they should know is to be ready to work.”
Paulson says he’s had two good mentors— mentors who taught him you have to be committed to a process and live and work in a certain way that promotes health and strength.
“The gym training to me is as much mental as it physical. We’ve got a lot of high achievers throughout the three gyms, and I really pride myself on that,” he says. “We’re successful because we find like-minded people and it sharpens their edge. It’s been wonderful, and we’ve been really fortunate to be able to take that theme and roll with it.”
Many health clubs and gyms have processes that are similar to a factory, Paulson says. They sit down and ask members what their goals are even before they’ve done a single workout. Then they get plugged into a cookie-cutter work-out routine. Strive takes a different approach.
“When somebody comes in for a first time for a complimentary session, we’re analyzing them throughout the workout,” he says. “We’re not really into what people may think they need before I even see them workout. We get right to it.”
Paulson says Strive keeps it simple. It focuses on a total body workout going through every motion—squatting, pressing, pulling, and assessing clients’ workouts in real time.
“After that first session, it’s all relative, because you might have somebody that knows what the deal is, and they’re ready to go right away,” Paulson says. “Or, you could have the person who’s never lifted before, so you’re taking different approaches.”
Strive Village’s membership model does not include the monthly fee structure that many gyms use—a model where gyms rake in the cash from people who rarely use their facilities. At Strive, clients purchase blocks of sessions at a time, ensuring they’re going to actually use the work-out opportunities they purchase. Clients workout individually or in small groups, always with a trainer.
The ideal client for Paulson is anybody who has a family, a demanding job, and who’s flying around on a regular basis but knows they need to get workouts in.
“They know they’ve got to go lift weights and they’ve got to lift weights hard, that it’s something they need to do. It’s like brushing your teeth,” he says.
It’s an uncommon breed of people who are drawn to Strive Village and that has allowed the gym to grow.
“It’s client by client, built brick by brick, with special people having fun and telling others that we’re building a special place,” Paulson says.
Strive Village is located in Western Springs at 4700 Gilbert Ave #22. For more information email train @strivevillage.com or visit strivevillage.com.
