EDITOR’S NOTE

F

ebruary 2024, with its extra day, feels full of possibility. Leap into it. Or disappear for a day of self-care because there’s one to spare. Whichever leap year strategy you choose, take this issue along. Maybe use the extra day to schedule any needed appointments with one of the incredible professionals in Premier Doctors. How lucky we are to have these experts to turn to for annual care and things that pop up along the way. The Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary is a dynamic group of women who work hard all year supporting IWS Family Health, where patients who otherwise wouldn’t receive world class medical care. They collect and donate coats, contribute “Angel Baby” bags filled with essentials for newborns, hold an annual baby shower, and pack Mother’s Day gift bags filled with little luxuries for mamas who don’t have many of those in their lives. Tablescapes, the chapter’s signature event supports all these projects and more. This year the theme is Oh La La, a tribute to Los Angeles, to be held on March 10, 2024. We caught up with the women helming this special day. Artist Norman Teague’s A Love Supreme at The Elmhurst Art Museum is a must-see. Take a sneak peek and learn about his inspiration and collaborators in our story of the same name.

You’ll love getting to know our cover star Diana Wagenbach in Country Vs. Town. Diana is inspiration for anyone who has ever wanted to switch careers. She transitioned from marketing to motherhood to interior design without skipping a beat. Dinner Date takes us to Que Miso, a fabulous new addition to the Hinsdale dining scene. It’s already a local favorite. If you haven’t been, find your recommendations here. In Journeys we’re off to Wyoming, which is breathtaking year-round and a favorite of many in-the-know travelers. Our Publisher’s Profile takes us inside The Derm Institute, an office you’ll want in your contacts for looking and feeling fantastic. Living + Giving is full of cheer, packed to the max with many of the parties from the end of last year. We are so proud of all the good work and delighted to share glimpses into each stellar event. Enjoy the photos and please be in touch with news and your upcoming events. Gratefully, MICHELLE CROWE Editor-in-Chief michelle@jwcmedia.com

READ IT The Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach, designed by architect Morris Lapidus and opened in 1954, stands as a timeless architectural marvel that epitomizes postwar America’s swagger and style. With its majestic structure, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, and a star-studded guest list including icons like Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, the Fontainebleau became an instant sensation and an enduring symbol of luxury. Groucho Marx famously dubbed it the Eighth Wonder of the World. In December, the Fontainebleau ventured west with a sister property in Las Vegas, filled with signature bow tie motifs and attended by everyone from Justin Timberlake to Cher. This narrative is vividly captured in FOREVER FONTAINEBLEAU, authored by Stephen Wallis and complemented by stunning photography from Peter Arnell, showcasing the hotel’s illustrious past and its promising future. assouline.com

SOLVE IT Take a break from true crime novels and podcasts with a Valentine’s Day Murder Mystery Dinner and a Show at Maggiano’s Little Italy Oakbrook Center. COUNTRY VS. TOWN DIANA WAGENBACH

grew up in the Northern suburbs. The youngest of three siblings, Diana looked to her hard-working parents, who immigrated from Romania, for inspiration on work ethic. She breezed through private high school in just three years, then attended Loyola University of Chicago, simultaneously running marketing and client management for a mortgage industry leader while earning her degree in Marketing. Diana and her husband Doug loved living in River North, but when their son was born and the suburbs called, she took a fateful drive to Hinsdale. “I drove through one beautiful spring morning and fell in love.” They purchased their home in 2016 and did an expansive renovation which Diana personally designed and project managed. She fell in love with design and after their daughter was born, enrolled at the School of the Art Institute’s Interior Design program. Her namesake company, Studio W Interiors, launched in 2021. “It’s been an amazing and wild ride, growing my company, working with amazing clients and growing a team. I’m excited to keep growing and continuing to help people design their dream homes,” she says. Diana considers herself to be incredibly lucky to be married to her best friend, who is her biggest supporter as she builds her business. Completing the family, Henry (8) and Caroline (5), are the sweetest, smartest, funniest kids around. Henry has taken up travel soccer and Caroline is a budding ballerina. Both are playing golf, which means Diana may pick up the clubs this spring. Family time is important to her, “We love to spend time together on the weekend, getting to go to fun restaurants or having family cooking night at home.” She kindly shares a few of favorites with Hinsdale Living. Thinking of new construction? No one knows new construction like Bryan Bomba

I’ve personally owned over a dozen new homes and totally renovated homes. Of my 3,000+ transactions * of experience, dozens upon dozens of these have been cases where I’ve represented buyers and/or sellers of new construction homes. As a former appraiser, I’ve analyzed and valued hundreds of new construction projects. There isn’t another agent in this market who knows construction the way that I do.

here are many reasons why Dr. Jordan C. Carqueville has been named a top doctor by Chicago Magazine for five consecutive years in various categories of dermatology and been recognized as Best Cosmetic Dermatologist in Chicago by Better Magazine every year since 2018. There’s the tripleboard certification, her expertise in skin cancer surgery and beauty, and her founding of Derm Institute of Chicago, the top dermatology care provider in Chicago. All of the physicians at Derm Institute of Chicago are boardcertified dermatologists and surgeons who treat all aspects of the skin. The institute is a comprehensive medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology practice, offering skin cancer surveillance, onsite Mohs surgery (a method for treating skin cancer lesions), extensive patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis, integrative medical approaches for chronic skin disease, phototherapy for psoriasis and vitiligo, and state-of-the-art cosmetic rejuvenation and laser services. “We are 100 percent physician-owned, and our physicians are experts in the field,” Dr. Carqueville says. “Our dermatologists provide transformative care to patients through their continuous education, commitment to excellence, and exceptional service.” A key value of Derm Institute of Chicago is to ensure patients are included in their care at every step. Through open communication with patients focused on education about treatments and solutions, together doctors and patients determine the best method of treatment to achieve safe and successful results. The Derm Institute of Chicago recently announced the addition of expert dermatologist, Dr. Jill Cotseones, to its Hinsdale and Chicago locations. Dr. Cotseones trained at one of the best laser fellowships in the country, in Santa Barbara, California. In addition to her laser expertise, Dr. Cotseones treats acne, skin cancer, scarring, and more.

“Dr. Cotseones joins Dr Stephanie Bayers, who has been practicing in our Hinsdale location since 2020,” Dr. Carqueville says. “Dr. Bayers completed a research mentorship year at Northwestern in pediatric dermatology, and she treats families and patients of all ages for their medical and cosmetic dermatology needs.” It’s not just the staff at Derm Institute of Chicago that is expanding. The institute recently announced it has opened its fourth office in the Chicago neighborhood of Ravenswood, bringing skin health access closer to home for many of its patients. “We offer the highest level of care from fellowship-trained experts, in specialties including laser, Mohs surgery, pediatric dermatology, allergic contact rashes and phototherapy,” says Dr. Carqueville. “Our patients can feel confident that they are in the hands of an expert, while receiving personalized treatment and communication from our office and staff.” To learn more about the practice and providers at Derm Institute of Chicago, follow on Instagram: @carqueville.md and @derminstitutechicago and visit dermic.com.

N

ot long after a group of civic-minded women in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago established the Kenwood Social Service Club to support the work of the Infant Welfare Society in 1913, women in other parts of the city and suburbs expressed interest in forming their own groups. Glencoe, Wilmette, Winnetka, Hubbard Woods, and Hinsdale joined Kenwood and the Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago was established. Today the Auxiliary is comprised of seven chapters with nearly 600 members throughout the Chicagoland area. Since its inception, the Auxiliary has donated more than $140 million to IWS. The Hinsdale chapter has donated more than $600,000 over the past five years. The vibrant medical practice that the money supports now serves entire families, not just infants & children, with a continuum of full service integrated, quality, and preventive health care services. IWS Family Health Center has recently opened a pharmacy to further expand their on-site services. For over a century, the Hinsdale chapter has remained a vital part of the Auxiliary. These hand-on volunteers collect hundreds of coats for the coat drive, donate an incredible array of necessities and nice-to-have items at the annual Baby Shower Luncheon and gather each Spring to fill hundreds of Mother’s Day gift bags with thoughtful items and a personal note. “Each year, we donate 2,000 diapers, 100 cans of formula and hundreds of other baby supplies, including strollers and pack & plays, which help 500 families,” said Kassandra Fisher, president of the Hinsdale Auxiliary. The Junior Board, comprised of students in eighth through twelfth grades, raises money for IWS with bell ringing and package wrapping. These Juniors also assist with a “See Santa” party at the Center, where children receive gifts and coats. Members work cheerfully all year. They go all out with the beloved Tablescapes luncheon. The annual event began in the late 1990s and has continued since. As a Sunday luncheon, it’s distinct from other fundraisers. It’s unabashedly a day for the ladies—although there are always a few

men in the crowd. “For more than 20 years, the Hinsdale Auxiliary has been proud to raise money in support of healthcare services to the medically underserved and vulnerable families in the Chicagoland area. We invite everyone to come shop, dine, participate in the raffles, or bid on auction items, all for a great cause,” says Fisher. Members take inspiration for their tables from a theme. Even 25 years in, creativity shines in the choice of theme and the flawless execution that positively transports guests to another place. This time, it’s Oh La La, an ode to the colors and vibrancy of Los Angeles. The date, 3.10 (also an LA area code), is a nod to this mecca of palm trees, dazzling sunsets, and casual luxury. Co-chair Melissa Goebel shared, “Last year’s event reflected on the history of art deco in Chicago. This year we wanted to bring back color and a more casual approach to glamour. What better inspiration than LA?” Linda Davis, co-chair adds, “The dictionary defines this as something that demonstrates surprise, admiration, or excitement. We combined this fun word and meaning with the idea of Los Angeles, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip It’s a place known for dreams coming true, glitz and glamour, fame, and fortune.” The member designed tablescapes will include elevated themed décor, as well as a unique experience to complement each table theme. Each vignette will be raffled off to a lucky winner, along with other carefully curated experiences and luxury items. The Party in Palm Springs table winner will take home not only the dinner and glassware, plus flourishes chosen by the design team, but also a live DJ experience by Katelyn Hernandez, “DJ K” will turn any gathering into a sunshine filled dance party to remember. Happy Hour on the Sunset Strip will include a wine tasting by Wines for Humanity. In addition, guests will enjoy a three-course lunch, live music, and shopping from premier boutiques. The pro tip is to buy lots of raffle tickets when purchasing a seat or table. This ensures more time to drop the personalized tickets into the hopper for the most-wanted tables and experiences. Then shop, sip, and listen to inspiring stories of patients who receive wonderful health care. It’s the whole Robertson Boulevard experience without the hassles of air travel.

“For more than 20 years, the Hinsdale Auxiliary has been proud to raise mony in support of healthcare services...”

Tickets for Tablescapes are available at hinsdaleiws.com.

ot everything needs a function, artist, designer, and educator Norman Teague often tells his students at the University of Illinois Chicago. It just needs to be beautiful; that could then be its function. Yet, Teague’s art and custom furniture are often a combination of the two. “My motivation comes from reflections that I have on growing up in Chicago,” says Teague. “Right now, I’m trying to think about design objects through the lens of being African American and what that looks like in a modern context.” Teague focuses on projects and pedagogy that address the systematic complexity of urbanism and the culture of communities. Past projects have ranged from public sculpture and retail spaces to consumer products and performances. In all, Teague primarily works with locally sourced building materials and local fabricators to create objects and spaces that explore simplicity, honesty, and cleverness. Take, for example, the Self Portrait he created while studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It’s an oversize ash wood and bending plywood bookcase—modeled after high-profile rims—that plays with form and composition to shape a narrative. “I really had to think about what I wanted to say,” explains Teague of the piece. “I was pissed and hurt, and this was my way of sharing that history. There are other little Black boys out there who need to know that other people hurt, love, and desire the same way they do. It was a passion project.” Teague first began to think of himself as an artist when his uncle Alfred taught him how to draw a face as a young child. He calls that moment his inspiration for later

studying drafting and architecture in school and for eventually pursuing continued education at Harold Washington College then Columbia College Chicago, where time in the school’s woodshop led him to consider a career as a designer. “Most of my career until that point I had worked under an architect or interior designer,” says Teague. “I was what one what might call a ‘CAD monkey.’ It excited me to have the freedom to go from initial idea to mechanics to final build. This experience was probably the most valuable time I had at Columbia and, before I graduated, I rented space and opened my first studio.” He worked on a variety of local projects with small businesses to start, flexing his creative muscles, and making a name for himself in Chicago and beyond. Fast forward to today, and Teague’s work is exhibited in the permanent collection at The Art Institute of Chicago—and in the collections of 16 other museums and art organizations across the country including MOMA and Carnegie Museum of Art. He partnered with museum exhibition design firm Ralph Applebaum Associates to concept the early stages of storytelling and furnishings for The Obama Presidential Center. He’s working on building a design center for artists of color on Chicago’s South Side. Teague is also in the process of creating a piece for New York-based gallery R & Company and is designing two chairs for iconic furniture brand Knoll. And through April 28, at The Elmhurst Art Museum, A Love Supreme, a solo exhibition inspired by legendary jazz musician John Coltrane, with an adjoining intervention in Mies van der Rohe’s McCormick House by Chicago-based BIPOC designers. Teague uses Coltrane’s album “A Love Supreme” as a personal, cultural, and spiritual touchstone to consider design influences from his life-long home in Chicago, exploring how the power of bold improvisational jazz and unapologetic Black aesthetics have expanded the minds and inspired creative communities of color. The artist and his collaborators will draw on their own history and cultural inspirations, including designers such as Chuck Harrison, sculptor Martin Puryear, and Emory Douglas. Throughout the exhibit, Teague mines the empowering musical legacy of the

Civil Rights Era, acknowledges overlooked historical BIPOC figures, and creates opportunity for today’s generation to acknowledge and reclaim the historical absence of Black design history in America. A Love Supreme seeks to provide a new narrative about the bold, bright, and vast number of designers who are the future of American design. “I believe there is a quest for craft from the imaginations of Black America that needs to be heard, seen, and felt as safe, desired, and beautiful. And it can only come from us. This turning point of awareness in American history will only get greater as time goes on—and design history will follow,” says Teague. “What I like about Norman’s work is how his pieces are contemporary art as well as furniture and industrial design,” says Yumi Ross, president of The Art Center Highland Park’s Board of Directors. “He pushes against preconceived boundaries and invents new intersections between disciplines. He is an utterly unique voice, a visionary.” Teague and Ross first met through renowned visual artist Amanda Williams, who worked with Teague on The Obama Presidential Center’s exhibitions design team. Ross later served on an Art Institute of Chicago’s board when it voted to acquire Teague’s Sinmi stool for the permanent collection. Ross adds, “Norman challenges viewers to look at art and design in new ways.” He also challenges his students to do the same. Teague is currently an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Chicago on the tenure track and says it’s supremely important to him to “be in a teacher capacity” as often as he can. “My work is on display for that reason, too,” explains Teague. “Other people get to see this dude from the South Side who had all sorts of growing pains but stuck to his guns and now gets to do what he loves for a living. It’s a very precious place to be. I like to

be in front of people in a happy light. We get enough Black men in front of the camera in an unhappy one.” There is a bit of pressure in that, too, he says. But even though his work comes from a “hurt place” sometimes, the pieces are a reminder of moments throughout his life and his feelings during those times. “Chicago’s South Side is an epicenter for great artists of color,” says Ross. “In addition to his amazing talent, I deeply appreciate Norman’s commitment to opening doors for fellow Black artists and designers, particularly on the South Side, and his mentoring of students considering careers in art and design.” Adds Teague, “If it touches anyone, then I’ve done my job as a maker. Hopefully 20 years from now, when a young Black man or woman is reading a design history book, they get to see someone who looks like them and see good work coming from that person. I hope I’m setting some sort of a bar.” A Love Supreme is part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities. It is sponsored by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. A Love Supreme is supported in part by a grant from the League of Chicago Theatres and ComEd. A Love Supreme: McCormick House Reimagined is cocurated by Norman Teague and Rose Camara. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Chipstone Foundation. The Elmhurst Art Museum is located at 150 South Cottage Hill Avenue in Elmhurst. The Museum is open Wednesday and Thursday from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., Friday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Regular admission prices are $18 for adults (ages 18+), $15 for seniors, $10 for students, and $5 for children. 630.834.0202, elmhurstartmuseum.org.

CARA VANWORMER-HARTMAN DC, DABCI, DACBN, IFMCP THERAPEUTIC HEALTH

SPECIALTY: Functional Medicine & Chiropractic Medicine EDUCATION: Magna Cum Laude graduate from the National University of Health Sciences, Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine; Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner; Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Internists; Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Nutritionists; Certified NeuroEmotional Technique Practitioner; Certified Acupuncturist; B.A., Illinois Wesleyan University; B.S., National University of Health Sciences

Dr. Cara Vanwormer-Hartman brings over 15 years of experience to the Hinsdale community and is a leading functional medicine and chiropractic doctor in suburban Chicago. She’s set herself apart as an innovative and passionate practitioner, offering her patients comprehensive treatment plans that address physical, physiological, and emotional components of health. Board-certified in functional medicine and clinical nutrition, she deeply understands the benefits of looking at the body as a whole and addressing the underlying root causes of her patient’s concerns, often addressing her patients’ ailments down to the cellular level. “I treat using a systems-biology approach that addresses the interconnected nature of health, targets root causes of disease, and optimizes wellness,” she shares. “This allows me to treat and co-manage nearly any ailment that walks into the clinic.” Digestive complaints, gastrointestinal (GI) issues, weight loss and autoimmune conditions are most commonly seen in her clinic, and she and her team frequently perform nutritional testing too, as food is one of the root causes of GI disturbances. “In the rapidly evolving realm of modern medicine, patients are living longer and prioritizing their quality of life, which begins with focusing on their health,” she shares. “The demand for functional medicine is gaining traction; patients are seeking answers to their health concerns that extend beyond medications. This is where I come in.” Dr. Hartman founded Therapeutic Health in 2015 to offer a wide range of services in functional medicine, which also include spinal decompression, acupuncture, IV therapy, chiropractic and massage therapy, peptides, and even hyperbaric oxygen therapy. “I love seeing people get better,” she shares. “My ability to dig deeper and offer patients a plan that drives clinical outcomes is my key goal.” Therapeutic Health is located 110 E. CHRISTOPHER CHAPMAN, M.D., ABOM-D RUSH OAK BROOK

SPECIALTY: Gastroenterology and nonsurgical weight loss procedures EDUCATION: M.D., Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship, University of Chicago Medical Center

Christopher Chapman, M.D., is one of the only doctors in the Chicago area offering both weight loss medications and nonsurgical procedures for long-term, durable weight loss. He routinely performs endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and revisions for weight regain after bariatric surgery. “For people that are looking to reduce excess weight, whether to enhance mobility, improve their health or boost their self-confidence, we are here to provide the extra support,” Dr. Chapman says. “During an ESG, we reduce the size of the stomach to about the size of a banana. You feel full faster, causing you to eat less food and lose weight. Because the procedure is done without incisions, most people go home the same day and can return to work after three days.” Dr. Chapman and his team are the most experienced in the Chicago area, having performed hundreds of endoscopic weight loss procedures since 2017. The procedures are performed at RUSH University Medical Center. After your procedure, Dr. Chapman will continue to see you at RUSH Oak Brook. “RUSH Oak Brook is the optimal place to see patients for follow-up care,” Dr. Chapman says. “The clinic space is new and beautiful, and my patients have access to all of our weight management services without the stress of traveling downtown.” RUSH Oak Brook is located at 2011 York Road in Oak Brook, 630-724-1300, rush.edu/services/ endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty-services.

Dr. Anne Furey Schultz and Dr. Cindy Lagone bring 50 years of experience and longstanding ties to the most renowned specialists at Northwestern Medicine to deliver personalized, comprehensive, and coordinated care. “We founded Authentic Internal Medicine because we believe exceptional medical care comes down to the relationship between a doctor and a patient,” says Dr. Lagone. Their innovative membership model makes for easy access and longer visits, which allows them to get to know their patients better. “Anyone who has interacted with the health care system in the last five years knows it has become increasingly depersonalized and fragmented. MAHA ZAYED, PH.D. THE OCD & ANXIETY CENTER

SPECIALTY: Clinical Psychology, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) EDUCATION: B.A., Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame; Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Northern Illinois University; Internship and Postdoctoral training, Dartmouth Medical Center and the National Center for PTSD AWARDS/HONORS: Co-author of 50 Ways to Rewire your Anxious Brain

Dr. Maha Zayed has more than 16 years of experience in clinical psychology, providing individual therapy to hundreds of clients who have inspired her with their strength and bravery. Specializing in anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), she has trained with some of the most well-known researchers and clinicians in the field. “I’ve had the privilege of working with and watching so many people display their strength and resiliency to manage the most debilitating symptoms and to go on to live happy, healthy lives,” she says. In 2016, she founded The OCD & Anxiety Center after recognizing a gap in specialized treatment for OCD, anxiety, and trauma in the Chicago Suburbs. Today, the center’s team of 25 therapists work with each patient to design a treatment plan that is structured, goal oriented, and tailored to their individual symptoms. “I’m incredibly proud of all the training and continuing education that goes on at the Center,” says Dr. Zayed, who takes pride in making sure that the most up-to-date, effective treatments are being offered and that the clients support systems are included in treatment. Treatment can also occur intensively and in the home or outside of the office. “Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Exposure Based therapy, we have seen people who have struggled for years get better and make progress in a relatively short amount of time,” she explains. In recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve seen a rise in anxiety, OCD, and trauma. “The right kind of treatment and the proper frequency is so important because the longer you struggle, the more hopeless you feel,” she shares. “We want people to know that you can get better, and anxiety does not have to keep you from doing the things you love and enjoy.” The OCD & Anxiety Center has locations at 2805 Butterfield Road, Suite 120, in Oak Brook, 9631 W. 153rd Street, Suite 33, in Orland Park, and 3225 Shallowford Road, Unit 500, in Marietta, Georgia, 630-522-3124, theocdandanxietycenter.com, mzayed@theocdandanxietycenter.com.

Heart health problems can appear differently in women than in men, often as fatigue or general feelings of unwellness. PETER D. GELDNER, M.D. THE GELDNER CENTER

SPECIALTY: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (emphasis in Aesthetic and Cosmetic Surgery) EDUCATION: B.A., Johns Hopkins University; M.D., University of Wisconsin; residency General Surgery, University of Chicago; residency, Plastic Surgery, Wayne State University, Detroit; residency, Plastic Surgery, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas AWARDS/HONORS/DISTINCTIONS: Clinical Faculty, University of Illinois and University of Chicago; Castle Connolly, America’s Top Surgeons; Marquis “Who’s Who” Lifetime Achievement Award; RealSelf Top contributor, Verified Doctor; US News & World Report Top Plastic Surgeons; media appearances include ABC, Fox News, NBC, WGN, Chicago Tribune, Life and Style Weekly, The Learning Channel, The Jenny Jones Show, Larry King Live, WebMD Radio, NewBeauty Instagram Live, and Allergan Instagram Live

Reputations are built over time, with effort, creativity—and ultimately—results. When Dr. Peter Geldner began his practice, most of his work dealt with complex reconstructive surgeries. “The questions were always how to formulate a unique solution for each patient based on their needs, desires, and limitations, available tissues, and a creative use of surgical options,” he says. “My cosmetic practice rapidly grew in an organic fashion. Patients sought me out since I didn’t apply a cookie cutter approach, instead treating each patient in a holistic fashion.” Dr. Geldner constantly evaluates his own outcomes to refine his patients’ options with surgical, as well as nonsurgical treatments. New devices and techniques may represent substantial advancements in the art and science of plastic surgery; conversely, without close review, they may simply represent hype. “Only critical evaluation allows us to choose which new devices and techniques work and which do not. Consultations focus on a candid discussion of the patient’s desires, health, options, and individualized risks,” says Dr. Geldner. “We jointly create a plan for success. Intraoperative and postoperative care is vitally important. Experience and critical thought have taught me not to dismiss patient concerns. I realize that for each patient, the subjective outcome of our care far exceeds an objective evaluation of the results.” That’s why he continues to surround himself with nurses and estheticians who share his vision. “What we do for our patients has tremendous importance in their lives,” he adds. “We offer the options to look better, feel better, and live better.” The Geldner Center is located at 2425 W. 22nd Street, Suite 212, in Oak Brook, and at 680 North Lake Shore Drive, Suite 1345, in Chicago, 630-315-5699 (Oak Brook) or 312-981-4440 (Chicago), mygeldnercenter.com.

SAMUEL J. GIRGIS, M.D.; TAWFIK GIRGIS M.D.; MATTHEW GIRGIS M.D. DRS. GIRGIS AND ASSOCIATES, S.C.

SPECIALTY: Otolaryngology (ENT) EDUCATION: Dr. Samuel J. Girgis: B.S., University of Illinois; M.D., UAG (Loyola University Clinicals); ENT residency, Loyola Medical Center Dr. Tawfik Girgis: Hinsdale Hospital, LaGrange Community Hospital, Northwestern Medicine, and Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospitals (Retired in 2000) Dr. Matthew Girgis: Bachelor’s, Vanderbilt University; M.D., Loyola Medical School; ENT residency, Kansas City University, Freeman Health System (7/2025) HONORS/AWARDS: Dr. Samuel J. Girgis: Castle Connolly, Chicago Magazine Top Doctors (20-plus years); Member, Independent Physicians and Providers of Illinois (IPPI); Past president, Chicago Laryngological and Otological Society (CL&O)

For more than 60 years, Drs. Girgis and Associates has been serving the Chicago community with dedicated care in ear, nose, throat, and sinus specialties. This longevity is due, in part, to years of high-quality, specialized treatment and a clear passion for what they do. Dr. Tawfik Girgis trained in otolaryngology, also known as ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care, under worldrenowned, pioneering ear surgeon, Dr. George Shambaugh, and founded the practice in 1959. “Since our practice was established back in 1959, we have been blessed to have longstanding, committed and caring team members who all strive to do what is best for patients every day in their work,” says Dr. Samuel J. Girgis. Today, Drs. Girgis and Associates is an all-encompassing one-stop-shop for a range of ear, nose, throat, and even sleep treatments. Their in-house and state-of-the-art services include thorough treatment for ENT related allergies, audiological and hearing aids, sleep treatment—with the help of a novel in-house Sleep Lab—and full body CT scans. At the helm of the practice today is Dr. Samuel J. Girgis, who followed in Dr. Tawfik Girgis’ footsteps and dedicated his profession to helping patients in the community find relief from a range of ailments, common or severe. Dr. Samuel J. Girgis is a board-certified otolaryngologist specializing in general ear, nose, and throat conditions with an emphasis on facial plastic surgery and sinus diseases. He has performed a remarkable 8,000-plus nasal and sinus procedures since he first began practicing in 1986. One crucial element that sets he and his renowned team apart is their premier, advanced technology and facilities that make accurate sinus diagnoses. “We have the ability to perform an ENT examination and obtain a CT scan from our onsite facility in the same visit, allowing us to make precise, real-time diagnoses and implement effective treatment. This results in a more accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment plan,” a process that frequently saves patients time and unnecessary visits, Dr. Girgis shares. “We welcome our patients with a personalized touch, getting to know them as a person first, as this helps us cater to their particular needs.” With over four patient generations of committed care now under their belt, Drs. Girgis and Associates are thrilled to continue serving future generations in the area with the service of their newest physician, Dr. Matthew Girgis, who will be joining the practice in 2025. The youngest Dr. Girgis joins from Kansas City University’s Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri, where he is currently finishing up his final phase of ENT residency. “We have been serving four generations of patients with quality care in a family like atmosphere and are excited to continue to serve future generations with Dr. Matthew Girgis joining the practice,” Dr. Samuel J. Girgis shares. Throughout their years of care and giving back to the community, the ethos on which the practice was founded remains the same—to help each patient, breathe better, hear better, and sleep better, with life changing results. Drs. Girgis and Associates strive for excellence in every aspect of care provided. “We go the extra mile for our patients, being available when needed,” says Dr. Samuel J. Girgis. “Every decision that we make in the practice is based on what is best for each patient, and for the members of our staff. We serve our patients in ways that affect positive, life-changing benefits.” Drs. Girgis and Associates is located at 908 N. Elm Street, Suite 306, in Hinsdale, 5201 S. Willow Springs Road, Suite 240, in La Grange, and 1515 N. Harlem, Suite 300, in Oak Park, 630-323-5214, girgisent.com, appt@girgisent.com.

Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County Dr. Setia: M.D., University of Virginia School of Medicine; Urology residency, RUSH University Medical Center; Endourology and Laparoscopic Surgery fellowship, Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Let’s face it: Some men can be a little hesitant to head to the doctor’s office. Especially when they’re experiencing certain symptoms. “If they are having testicular pain or if they’re having trouble with urination, sometimes there is a little bit of bashfulness,” says Dr. Talat Suleiman, a primary care physician at RUSH Oak Brook. As men get older, they may start to notice prostate-related issues that could be a sign of an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia) or even prostate cancer. The symptoms can be similar, so it’s important to check in with a primary care physician, who may refer you to a urologist. “Sometimes men do tend to put things off a little bit,” says Dr. Shaan Setia, a urologist at RUSH Oak Brook who specializes in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia. “Often, there are things that can improve their quality of life sooner than later.” Regardless of your age or health concern, Dr. Suleiman and Dr. Setia are here to help at the conveniently located RUSH Oak Brook in the Western Suburbs. “If you have any type of symptom that you’re worried about, I wouldn’t wait on it.” Dr. Suleiman says. RUSH Oak Brook is located at 2011 York Road in Oak Brook, 630-724-1300, rush.edu/services/urology-services.

If patients do need the care of another doctor, we work closely to make sure the transition in care is seamless.” RUSH Oak Brook is located at 2011 York Road in Oak Brook, 630-724-1300, rush.edu/services/gastroenterology-services.

Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer shares tips for finding the right divorce attorney to represent you and your family.

n the same way that no one wants to have an illness, no one wants to get divorced. But like finding the right doctor, finding the right divorce attorney is critical to a successful outcome. To get the right fit, there are many things to consider. Do you want a firm or do you want a person who works alone? Do you want someone who specializes in issues involving children? Do you want someone who’s familiar with small businesses? Do you want someone who understands executive compensation and restricted stock units? Do you want someone who is familiar with each of the judges in the county and can advise you regarding what to expect? Do you want someone who’s able to listen and can help you create a strategy for your family? Do you want someone who can quickly review and understand financial information? Do you want someone who understands retirement assets? Do you want someone who patiently answers your questions? Do you want someone who can write and effectively communicate? Do you want someone who is going to be a fierce and effective advocate in court? Do you want someone who can sit down at a conference table, find a creative solution, and bring people to the middle? In my experience, every one of these qualities is important and in fact, you deserve to have nothing less than an attorney who has it all. One of the common misconceptions is that if you want your divorce to be amicable, you should choose an attorney who does not specialize in trial or litigation. As a result, because you don’t want to go to trial and you don’t want to be involved in litigation, you choose someone with no trial experience. This could end up putting you at a disadvantage. I have found that having an attorney who has the strength and experience to go to trial, when needed, is actually a deterrent to both litigation and trials. Strength changes everything. It’s much more effective to walk into a room to negotiate a settlement and create an amicable resolution if your attorney has the strength and experience to go to trial. You are much less likely to be bullied into a settlement that does not make sense. Similarly, if you’re focused on child and custody issues, you may choose an attorney who only specializes in those issues and is not as experienced in the financial and property area of divorce. However, once the child issues are resolved, you’ll quickly learn that you need an attorney who has the knowledge and expertise in the

Michone J. Riewer

financial area to make sure that you and your children are financially set up for success. Both areas are important to the successful resolution of your divorce. Again, just like when you find a new doctor, when choosing your divorce attorney, interview more than one. Ask questions, not only about the one issue that is most important to you but about each of the areas of divorce. Ask them about their strategy and notice whether they have listened to and responded to your questions and concerns. Find someone who will be pleasant to deal with, and who you feel is worthy of your trust. The divorce process is much easier when you choose the right divorce attorney to guide you through the process. Michone J. Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

DINNER DATE

TACOS & TIRADITOS Que Miso, the striking new outpost in downtown Hinsdale, not only showcases the hidden connections between the Mexican and Japanese cuisine, it does so in a space that would make Mexico City proud. WORDS BY PETER AND KATE MICHAEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

I

t’s been weeks now since we visited Que Miso, the adorably suave Mexican-Japanese mashup in downtown Hinsdale, and I still find myself beaming and drooling over two very different aspects of our experience: two chic dining rooms and one crackingly divine wisp of chicken skin. First a confession: I’ve always had a thing for chicken skin. I once motored across state lines after hearing a rumor that the best chicken-skin tacos in the country were to be found in Louisiana rather than Texas. (Turned out to be scurrilous, dastardly lie.) You should also know that I still carefully, lovingly peel off the skin from buckets of fried chicken and save them for the conclusion of my meal, convinced that delayed pleasure of the finest things of life amplify their greatness. And, at this point in my life, a properly fired of plater of kawa (Japanese-style chicken skin skewers) is likely to appear on my “last supper” wish list.

DINNER DATE Rhea’s Half Chicken

And now, out of nowhere, arrives this beauty: One of the best dishes on Que Miso’s inaugural menu: a succulent airline-cut chicken named in honor of its creator, chef Rhea Brown. The chicken is brined, seasoned, partially baked, and then fired to order, preserving the chicken’s moist meat, and crisping up that envy-inducing cracking of skin. It crinkles and crunches like a tortilla chip and arrives dimpled with the perfect ratio of salt, pepper, garlic, and oregano. The result is a discovery: The answer to what might happen if you crossbred a Caribbean-style rotisserie chicken with a platter of South Side chicken Vesuvio. Although the dish doesn’t draw direct inspiration from either Mexico or Japan, the restaurant’s two primary influences, the dish exemplifies the sophisticated yet approachable vibe that Collin Ringelstetter-Ennis, along with

managing partner Greg Mizen, have brought to Que Miso. This is, without question, a debonaire-looking taqueria. Anyone who’s ever picked up a pizza from the space’s previous tenants— recently Sauced Pizzeria and before that, Baldinelli of Hinsdale— are likely perform a double-take on the way in the front door. Ringelstetter-Ennis, working in collaboration with local designer Courtney Casey, has pulled off a design miracle, transforming a once cramped and shadowy 26-seat pizza parlor into a light, bright space that feels like it’s been poached from a hip corner of Mexico City. The Que Miso team made the wise, albeit expensive, decision to demo the entire middle section of the old restaurant. In years past, you’d have to maneuver through the kitchen or, worse yet, exit outside and then walk around the entire building to access the space’s expansive back room. Now the two dining spaces are connected via a long arched hallway. While conducting research in Mexico, RingelstetterEnnis noticed a number of charming “split-design” concepts (casual in the front, more buttoned-up in the back) and decided to export the idea to Hinsdale. Thus, Que Miso boasts two starkly different dining spaces. The new front room, what we’ll refer to as the “cantina,” has energy to burn. Blades of color and abstract shapes pop from the 70s-era wallpaper. It’s sheathed in pale woods and illuminated by wicker lampshades. Music plays. Big screen TVs stream sports. In short, it’s a space built for snacking, nibbling, taco tasting, and sipping wine and cocktails with abandon. Follow the “light” (a pale white neon signs that reads “Tequila es Mi Amigo”) to the back and you’ll arrive at a more formal dining room. Silk white curtains. Exposed brick walls. And a staging station aglow with giant lanterns. It’s darker here: more romantic and roomy—clearly designed for families, intimate dates and diners seeking a TV-free experience.

DINNER DATE Churros with fruit coulis

The name of the restaurant, by the way, was inspired by the owners’ love of miso, the now ubiquitous fermented soybean paste, but the phrase Que Miso is a Mexican slang that, roughly translated, means “What did you do to me?” That’s a playful touch, but I wouldn’t exactly call Que Miso a fusion restaurant. Que Miso’s inaugural menu reads more, to me, like an upscale Mexican affair with Japanese appetizers and accents. Order the house guacamole and it won’t come spiked with furikake or rivulets of wasabi paste worked among the avocado. You’ll receive an oversized bowl of chips and a small ramekin of mildly flavored guac snowed over with cotija cheese. Chef Brown’s guacamole is undeniably chunky—huge nuggets of avocado are left unmashed amidst the crema—and almost totally devoid, for better or worse, of spice. Que miso currently offers five different tacos—from chicken tinga and carne asada to al pastor and a vegetarian-friendly roasted miso mushroom selection—but it was the Baja fish tacos that won our hearts.

Spice Tuna Crispy Rice appetizer

Small tender pieces of cod are encased in a thinly battered with an almost imperceptibly light shell. These fish tenders are tumbled with pickled cabbage, a mildly spicy limechipotle dressing and shaved radishes. There’s nothing, in terms of Que Miso’s Japanese offerings, that will require you to fire up Google Translate. Que Miso doesn’t veer to far from the raw seafood apps that you’d find at an upscale sushi bar or neighborhood izakaya. We wasted no time polishing off our spicy tuna crispy rice appetizer, ultra-tender mounds of diced tuna nestled onto scorched beds of sushi rice with a hint of avocado crema. The dish, served on a stark white dish, is plated to look like

Designer Courtney Casey created welcoming vibes.

DINNER DATE

Cocktails

The wine list from Andrew Spence not only runs the gamut from Napa wines to Old World favorites, but it also offers a few smart by-the-bottle selections from Mexico as well.

Thyme Yuzu Tom Collins:

a busted pinata, with tiny bits of diced pineapple, tomato and assorted tangles of micro greens bursting form the center of the plate in every direction. The kitchen’s salmon tiradito—a Peruvian style Ceviche influenced by the country’s rich melting pot of Japanese immigrants—supplies far more of the heat you’d expect from the Mexican table. Thin slices of salmon are moistened with ponzu oil and then topped with two spicy embellishments: slivers of serrano chili and a dollop of neon-green wasabi Tobiko. In terms of entrees, Que Miso’s 10-ounce filet is a must-order. The kitchen adds a pat of compound butter made from chipotle peppers and Mexican spices, washing the entire steak in liquified taco seasonings. Any dish—and there are many of them—that includes Que Miso’s signature miso-smothered mushrooms will inspire you to ask for the recipe. And our favorite dessert, by far, was the house churros with two different fruit coulis. Don’t be surprised, when the weather gets cold for your server to offer guests one of the house’s free pashminas to warm them up. In some cases, small ottomans will be placed next to your table so that you can set down your purse in style and ensure that your doggy bag stays within easy reach. Servers stand at the ready, umbrellas in hand, to escort guests back to their car during inclement weather, in what Ringelstetter-Ennis describes as the restaurant’s commitment to providing five-star service. “At the end of the day, what we want more than anything else is for people to come, enjoy the experience and spread the word as to what we’re doing here,” say Ringelstetter-Ennis. “If you leave and feel the urge to want to come back with friends or family, we’ve done our job.” Que Miso is located at 114 S Washington St. in Hinsdale. Call 630.570.0217 or visit quemiso.com

Any spirit with a Collins genus includes some sugar, spirits, and citrus, meaning that you’re guaranteed a spiked lemonade of some variety. At Que Miso, the bar sticks with gin but opts for subtle pour of yuzu-flavored sake, which makes this an unusually clean and perfect pairing Caption with any raw seafood appetizer.

Elderflower Watermelon Margarita:

If you’re ordering tacos, you can’t beat this classic chaser, which adds sweet undercurrents of pineapple juice, watermelon, and a touch of Bitter Truth Elderflower Liquor. Imagine a watermelon aqua fresca crosspollinated with a margarita.

Amangani sits on the edge of Grand Teton National Park.

JOUR NEYS

AMANGANI L

Wilderness Wonder in the West

ate last spring I was hosted by Aman resorts at their first built North American property, Amangani in Jackson Hole, Wyoming a town I have never had the opportunity to visit. This being my fourth Aman property to experience I was curious to compare and see how they differed. Of course, the location would be the most obvious. Amangani sits on the crest of a bluff, on East Gros Ventre Butte, 10 minutes outside the beautiful town of Jackson and 20 minutes from Jackson Airport. Now, there are airport landings which literally take your breath away and one of them for me was the arrival at Jackson Hole. Peeking out of the airplane window I could not help but just stare at the wide-open spaces and the snowcapped mountains in the distance. It was like being greeted by one of the most majestic views of the Western frontier. Stepping out of the aircraft door the crisp and fresh mountain air filled my lungs. I felt refreshed and energized. Playful horses

Amangani is a luxury base camp for skiers, hikers, anglers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. An exclusive hilltop hideaway on the fringes of Grand Teton National Park. As one might expect from ultra-luxury Aman Resorts, Amangani is intimate and private, with gorgeous interiors, exemplary service and a money-shot view over meadows and mountains. A linear layout ensures all rooms and public areas take full advantage of the vista that this privileged position permits. Every Aman property is designed to reflect its environment. In Amangani’s case, this means lots of natural materials. The sandstone-clad, pitch-roofed lobby gives onto triple-height windows to capitalize on that view, while flagstone floors, redwood beams and rawhide and faux-fur soft furnishings are complemented by modern artworks and authentic Native American artefacts. It all comes together in a home-from-home ambiance with a well-to-do, Wild West slant. Stepping inside the three-story hotel the first thing that got my attention was the stellar view. The windows of the lobby offer sweeping views of the Teton Range and Snake River range. True to Aman style the interiors are extravagant yet minimalistic and take inspiration from the location, in the case of Amangani it’s the beautiful outdoor scenery. Since this was not my first Aman experience, I knew what level of service to expect, and I was not disappointed. My host greeted me with a cool glass of freshly squeeze nectar of huckleberries which I would later learn is an ingredient used in many local recipes. After being checked in, I was personally led to my suite and given a through run-through of all its bells and whistles. The mini bar loaded with locally sourced snacks and beverages that would be at my disposal if a craving should hit. The living area came with too-comfy-to-leave, low-slung beds and floor-to-ceiling windows leading onto oversized terraces. Plush seating areas transformed the room into my personal cozy sanctuary. Like the lobby, my deluxe suite was quaint and LUX. My suite came with heated floors and a remote-controlled fireplace which I enjoyed even though the temps were hovering in the 60’s but can imagine how appreciated that would be in a Wyoming

JOUR NEYS winter. My suite had all the possible creature comforts – his and hers vanities, spacious closets, Nespresso machine, walk in showers and a soaking tub with a glorious view. I enjoyed this each evening sprinkled with sage smelling bath salts. My favorite part was the incredibly large balcony over-looking the snowcapped Grand Tetons. Like all the suites it offered panoramic views of the valley. I could see the bison grazing in the pastures below and at dusk a family of deer frolicking on the dewy grass. Standing upon the terrace overlooking the mountains, is the resort’s spectacular rectangular pool and whirlpool tub. Both are heated, which makes for wonderful year-round dips. I forgot The Grill my swimsuit but thankfully the shop in the resort had the perfect style and fit for me so I could enjoy swimming laps each morning taking in the crisp air. I felt like a princess and as though my room had to be the best in the resort but no, every suite looks out over the mountains, The 40 spacious suites are a symphony in wood, stone, and slate. I had a little time before I had to get ready for dinner and decided to sit by the pool. I typically bring my headphones to listen to music but this time I decided to sit in the peaceful silence of the moment. There was nothing to hear other than the sound of nature and nothing to look at but the sweeping views of the Teton Mountains. Talk about hitting the re-set button. I didn’t know how much I needed this until I was experiencing it. Now I understand why this Jackson Hole, Wyoming resort is beloved by celebrities and the over-scheduled being torn from one meeting to another. This was peace at its finest. That evening I attended a cocktail and canapés gathering in the rich, wood paneled library with doors that opened to a sandstone patio. As the sun settled in the west the view became drenched

Majestic views from a deck

with the rich colors of golden red and burnt orange. It was magical and with sunsets like this, priceless memories I will always have. Next it was off to dinner in the highceilinged, redwood-walled eatery, The Grill. It not only allows you to admire the local wildlife though its floor-to-ceiling windows, but to eat it too. The inventive American menu takes in elk sirloin chili and bison ribs, as well as Kobe beef from Idaho and line-caught yellowfin tuna. As luck would have it, the restaurant had just launched its own brand of champagne which I enjoyed with my starter of a red beet and goat cheese salad sprinkled with pistachios. I followed this with exquisite fresh caught salmon and ended my meal with a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie. AHHHHmazing! I was ready to sink into my plush bed for a night of rest. The next morning, I woke early and met my expert guide who would take me on an incredible wildlife tour. I didn’t bring binoculars for wildlife-spotting and mountain close-ups, but never fear, Aman thinks of everything and had a pair to loan me. My

JOUR NEYS guide Jared had been exploring the Grand Tetons for 20 plus years. I experienced a tour of the National Park and searched for grizzly bears along with the wide variety of Wyoming’s wildlife. It’s times like these when I really appreciate mother nature. We saw several species of animals including moose, elk, bison, a red fox porcupine and wolves. It was possible I would even get to see the best known and most photographed grizzly of all time: Bear 399, a 27-year-old female who lived her entire life in Grand Teton National Park. In order to thrive, grizzly’s require significant undeveloped space and distance from most human activity and the 22 million protected acres surrounding the area is just that. Unfortunately for me 399 decided to sleep in that day but was seen the following with her brand-new cub. I became an instant fan of hers and proceeded to follow on Instagram. What better way to offset the exciting heart thrilling adventure of a wildlife hike than to relax at the spa and enjoy a 60-minutedeep tissue massage. The intimate spa at Amangani met the challenge and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. That evening I ventured into town to do some shopping and dine at one of the local restaurants. Jackson Hole, a ritzy resort town, is set at the foothills of the natural wonderland that is Grand Teton National Park. The town was bustling with locals and tourists enjoying the setting sunshine, while sitting outside enjoying the views sipping on a cocktail. I decided it would be a sin not to visit the famed Million Dollar Cowboy Bar where barstools are made from horse saddles and the rich wood bar has been serving up house made cocktails and BBQ for decades. Later that evening they would have live music and dancing which, If I hadn’t had the early morning, I would have enjoyed. On my final full day in Jackson Hole, I headed to Snake River for the experience of a white-water raft tour. My fearless leader filled me in on the sites as we bumped and bounced through the melted winter snow while navigating the rocks and fallen trees. It was both exciting and educational. Only 15 minutes from

here sits the National Museum of Wildlife Art (NMWA) across from the National Elk Lands where hundreds of wild elk graze. NMWA is the nation’s only museum dedicated solely to wildlife art, representing wild animals from around the world. After another award deserving dinner back at Amangani, I decided to sit on the balcony by an open fire and take in all the elements. From the fresh mountain air, the silence and stillness and so many stars in the sky, it was truly a memorable and perfect ending to the day. My flight wasn’t leaving until the afternoon, so I had just enough time for one last adventure to indulge myself with. A horseback ride along the mountain tops. As a huge convenience, the horse ranch, not part of the resort, happened to be only a 10 min walk down the mountain. It was the ideal ending to the adventurous trip to Jackson. Built-in 1998, Amangani is the first property of Aman Resorts in North America. From unfailingly charming front-of-house staff to instinctive and unobtrusive waiters, service hovers comfortingly between personal and polished. For example, when I showed up at the restaurant for breakfast, my preferred choice of morning coffee would appear without having to ask, while housekeeping would magically make up my room by the time, I returned to my room. An effortlessly dramatic Rocky Mountain hideaway situated close to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks that in winter months is the ideal base for skiing the snow-packed slopes of Jackson Hole, but this all-suite Wyoming wilderness retreat has back-to-nature appeal all year round., A true adventure destination and already considered perhaps the best wildlife viewing in North America, the incredible opportunity of wildlife viewings and possibility to catch a glimpse of a newly emerged bear from hibernation must be one of the most unique experiences one can have. I would keep these memories with me forever and hope to return and share them next time with my family. Aman has done it again; the perfect resort to host the perfect experience.

Simply From The Heart Gala

Jackelyn & Taki Kastanis

The beloved non-profit, Simply From The Heart (SFTH) celebrated with friends and supporters at their annual gala, which capped off an impactful year. In 2023 SFTH strengthened their bonds with existing hospital partners and forged new relationships with hospitals and charities to expand their reach across Illinois, Florida, and Texas, introduced enhanced bedside and pop-up pampering events, achieving a 20% increase in patient outreach, and met an increased need for hair care through new salon partnerships. These achievements and more allow SFTH to provide patients with the mental health boost that comes from having their needs taken care of in the company of engaging volunteers and beauty professionals. The evening was an acknowledgment of all the organization has achieved and a glimpse into the bold goals for the tenth year of spreading sparkle. sftheart.org

Hephzibah Home serves some of the youngest victims of severe abuse, neglect and trauma and children in need of behavioral intervention, ages 3-11 in Illinois. Hephzibah Home is a safe haven, and a place for children to stabilize and heal so they can eventually return to a home environment. It is an organization near and dear to many in our community, who find ways throughout the year to support the good work and demonstrate to the children that they are loved. A group of these devoted supporters, led by Amity Comiskey, have a wonderful annual tradition of turning their Friendsgiving lunch into Girlfriends Giving. The ladies spend time together and everyone brings toys and clothes for the children of Hepzibah Home. hephzibahhome.org

Men’s Night at Burdi

Chris Curran, Ryan Standridge, Jason Mergen

Men of style gravitate to Burdi Clothing for great suits, casually elegant weekend wear, and travel-ready accessories. It was chosen as the perfect spot for the inaugural Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) Men’s Night. The gentlemen—and a few ladies—enjoyed whiskey tastings, a cigar bar, bites from Que Miso, and camaraderie. Not to mention a bit of shopping. The evening was the first but surely not the last for the significant others of HJWC members. hjwc.us

HHS Finding Grace The Hinsdale Historical Society celebrated opening night of a month-long educational exhibit that shed light on the life and contributions of pioneering social reformer and Hinsdale resident Grace Bagley. First working in Chicago and later in Massachusetts, Grace’s life of service included landmark reforms in childcare and education, juvenile justice, housing, immigration, and women’s suffrage. Grace, who lived to be nearly 85 years old, passed away in 1944. Her achievements were all but forgotten until local historians Jean Follett and Julia Bachrach uncovered information about Grace’s trailblazing life while conducting research on the Bagley House, an important early work by Frank Lloyd Wright. Since 1975, the Hinsdale Historical Society has been the home of Hinsdale’s history. With its mission to bridge the past, present, and future by engaging the community with its history and architecture, the Society is devoted to collecting, preserving, and promoting the history of Hinsdale, Illinois. hinsdalehistory.org

As the marquee sponsor of the upcoming Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) benefit, CD Peacock is truly partnering with this dynamic organization. Just in time for holiday gift giving, the venerable jeweler hosted members and guests for sips, sushi, and shopping. A portion of sales were donated to HJWC for the evening and through the month of December. HJWC is working toward raising more than $400,000 for their grant program this club year, and this donation is much appreciated.
