EDITOR’S NOTE
D
id you make resolutions? How are they going? My goals for the year are to be present for all the special moments, large and small. Which really just means I need to stay off my phone. Luckily, there are so many wonderful things happening in our area that it’s way more interesting to talk to incredible philanthropists and entrepreneurs than to scroll endlessly. This issue starts the year off strong with feature stories on two great events. The Misericordia Women’s League (MWL) is hosting their annual benefit on February 24, 2024. With that date, they’ve dubbed it As Gold As It Gets. Two very special volunteers, Jo Marie Ferro and Cathy Hofmann will be honored with the Heart of Gold award. We chatted with the honorees, event chairs, and leaders for 24 Karat Magic in the Air. The Clarendon Hills chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary is ready to Light the Night Roaring Twenties style. With a new location and a superfun theme, it’s sure to be another great night raising money for IWS Health. We are delighted to introduce you to Hinsdale’s own fashion phenomenon, Donovan Laux. Donnie is fresh off an internship at Love Shack Fancy and blazing a path as a designer. Getting through January requires a bit of armchair traveling. Journey with us to Amanyara in Turks and Caicos.
Our Publisher’s Profiles are always the best place to read about local businesses you should know. Morgan Stogsdill is back with her best advice and we’re introducing you to The Park Planners and Legendary Spa. The Living + Giving pages are packed with photographs of gatherings large and small. What a joy it is to share the highlights every month. Wishing you a great month. May your year start on high note and only improve as the months roll along. Please be in touch with all the news and happenings. Gratefully, MICHELLE CROWE Editor-in-Chief michelle@jwcmedia.com

Winter Walks of Wonder While it is tempting to hit the treadmill or spend every January weekend in Naples, outdoor walks are brilliant for the spirit. A brisk trek around the Fullersburg Woods trail lifts the mood, provides a jolt of vitamin D, and activates the immune system. Winter nature walks also offer a new perspective on nature’s beauty. The soft sound of snow crunching underfoot, a glimpse of woodland creatures, even icicles frosted on branches are reminders that each season is beautiful. dupageforest.org

THE BUZZ
ELEGANT ESCAPE Need a quick weekend away or ideas for hosting out-of-town family visiting for the holidays? We recently checked out the iconic Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest, a quick jaunt northeast on the shores of Lake Michigan. From proper high tea to gorgeous interiors filled with fine antiques, a sojourn at this National Register of Historic Places landmark (also recognized by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the Midwest’s leading resort hotels) feels like a regal retreat to the English countryside. The hotel’s Local’s Only package offers a unique immersion into the best that Lake Forest has to offer—including a scavenger hunt through the city’s historic Market Square to collect treasures (valued at $250) at seven luxury retailers. You will also enjoy a two-night stay, Afternoon Tea Service, and dinner for two in The English Room. For reservations, visit thedeerpathinn.com.
CINDERELLA GIOACHINO ROSSINI’S enchanting fairytale heroine returns to the LYRIC OPERA OF CHICAGO stage in classic style. CINDERELLA (LA CENERENTOLA) tells the story of the downtrodden daughter of a selfish father, Don Magnifico. When Prince Ramiro (disguised as his own valet, Dandini) meets her, they fall instantly in love, leading — after a few complications — to a heartwarming happy ending. Rossini’s score provides endless sparkle, with Cenerentola’s and Ramiro’s arias abounding in fabulous vocal virtuosity. There’s also hilarity, thanks to the antics of Magnifico and Dandini. Two rising stars, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Jack Swanson, will be joined by the incomparable Alessandro Corbelli to lead Lyric’s cast in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle’s world-famous production led by the exciting Taiwanese conductor Yi-Chen Lin. lyricopera.org

COUNTRY VS. TOWN
DR. NAMRATA BHANSALI
grew up in the Northwest suburbs near Bloomingdale where her parents still lived in her childhood home until very recently. After attending the University of Illinois at Chicago for an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience, she spent the next 15 years living in the Gold Coast while attending dental school, then working after graduating. After moving back to the suburbs, a chance meeting turned into the career opportunity of her dreams in the heart of Hinsdale. She now lives just a few minutes away from the Hinsdale dental practice she purchased in October of 2022, Smiles of Hinsdale. That was a busy month as 12 short days after closing on the dental practice, Namrata delivered her first child, daughter Nysa. “It’s been a hectic year full of changes, but I feel like I have come out stronger because of it. I feel blessed that I did not have to choose between my dream career and starting a family, all thanks to my amazing support system who have helped me along the way and continue to do so,” she says. This dynamic new mom has been practicing general dentistry for about 10 years. Namrata says, “My passion is to give back to the community through dental service: I worked for a medical-dental clinic for 6 years in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood where I provided care for those most in need, including refugees, children, and those living in underserved neighborhoods.” After she and her husband moved back to the suburbs, Namrata continued to give back whenever her schedule allowed by volunteering at the Chicago Dental Society Foundation Clinic. Balancing running her own business while spending time with her now one-yearold daughter doesn’t leave much spare time, but she hopes to continue service through volunteering. She took a few minutes from her busy schedule to share a few of her favorites.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN Namrata Bhansali wears a Giorgio Armani dress and Alexander McQueen scarf from Neiman Marcus
Mantra? There are no failures in life, only lessons to be learned. Learn from your mistakes and come back stronger than ever. What organizations do you support? St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Favorite workout? It’s been a while since I’ve hit the gym, but I’ve enjoyed working out to Pamela Reif dance-style workout videos. Best grooming tip? Getting a fresh haircut and a blowout can make you feel like a million bucks. The Dyson air wrap is a great hack to get that salon fresh feel right at home. Guilty pleasure? Indulging in some of my favorite dessertslike the caramel apples from the Fruit Store in downtown Hinsdale. Even a dentist can have a sweet tooth. Music you love? I literally love all genres of music-there’s a genre to match every type of mood you’re in. I recently went to the Ed Sheeran concert, and he is beyond talented. Advice you would give to your younger self? You will only regret the chances you never took. Give it a try, what’s the worst that can happen?
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? Comfy and practical but keeping it stylish is a must. Anything athleisure from Lululemon fits the bill. I’m a believer that you can never go wrong with neutrals and earth tones. Favorite walk? Downtown Hinsdale early morning on a weekend, coffee in hand. There’s a special charm about roaming the streets and browsing the boutiques before the weekend rush begins. Can’t leave the house without? My cellphone. I am the worst with directions, so I need Google maps to help get me where I need to go. Place to celebrate? Nabuki or Davanti Enoteca. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Fontanos for the best work lunches and I love the salad bar at the Fruit Store. Favorite festival or special event? Farmer’s Markets. Best thing about the country? Ample parking everywhere. The perfect day is? Having no set plans, starting the morning with a coffee from a local coffee shop, strolling my daughter around her in stroller while shopping or running errands with my husband.
Your style is? A Jumpsuit with comfy heels, a dress, or some trendy jeans with a crop top. Favorite walk? The Riverwalk near City Winery on a nice Summer day. There’s a special energy about everyone out and about, enjoying the weather we look forward to all year. Can’t leave the house without? Crossbody bag to hold my phone, credit card, and some lip gloss. Place to celebrate? Maple and Ash- hands down the best seafood tower in the city! Best quick bite or hidden gem? Velvet Taco or Time Out Market. Favorite festival or special event? The Chicago Gourmet Festival. I like to think of myself as a foodie. With so many hot and new restaurants there, you can spend all day eating and enjoying the Millennium Park backdrop. Shop? I love walking around and browsing the shops on Michigan Ave and on Oak Street Best thing about town? There’s no shortage of restaurants-there’s always a new restaurant or new cuisine to try. The perfect day is? Enjoying the company of good friends on a rooftop, then ending the night with a great dinner.

The Clarendon Hills Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Pay Tribute to the Roaring Twenties at Annual Benefit
C
WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR AND MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
larendon Hills resident Jen Alsman has long found a deeper meaning in her own chaotic life during the countless hours she has spent volunteering as part of the Clarendon Hills chapter of the Infant Welfare Society (IWS) of Chicago. “Many people ask me why I still do it,” remarks Alsman during an interview with Hinsdale Living. “But the truth is that I can’t imagine not doing it. I do it as much for them as it is for me.” Indeed, as a functional nutrition practitioner, the urge to help others better themselves has always beat heavily within the heart of Alsman. But specifically, over the past eleven years, the mother of two has found her heart beat even faster for all those that benefit from the work of the Clarendon Hills chapter of the Infant Welfare Society (IWS.) “In this world, you can often feel somewhat helpless as to how to best help those that are hurting,” she says. “But ever since I began volunteering with IWS, I have been able to see firsthand how we are making a difference in the lives of so many people. And that has blessed me immensely.” But yes, there is another reason she loves volunteering with IWS. “I just love having an excuse to get my glam on,” Alsman laughs. “I definitely need to look for a dress with some fringe this year.” Indeed, amid yet another dreary winter is the anticipation of a night of glitz and glamour at the Clarendon Hills chapter of Infant Welfare Society’s annual benefit on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the Westin Hotel in Lombard. “It’s something we look forward to all year long,” explains Alsman, who serves as the co-chair of the chapter’s annual benefit, which helps to raises money to help support the critical needs of medically underserved patients in the Chicagoland area through the extraordinary work of the Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago (IWS). “I am looking forward to everyone embracing the ‘Roaring 20s’ theme and the community coming together to raise funds for a truly amazing organization.” An exciting addition to this year’s event is dueling pianos, an interactive entertainment feature that is sure to keep the party going for the nearly 400 expected attendees long into the night.
The revelry will continue with a premiere live auction. One of many items up for bid is a vacation package for a 3-4 night stay in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons Napa Valley along with wine tastings for six at the Louis M. Marini Winery, the William Hills Estate and J Vineyards. But as much as the night will surely entertain all those in attendance, there are also parts of the evening that are sure to turn somewhat emotional. “What I am looking forward to most is seeing the whole community come together for an amazing night for an incredible cause,” explains Audrey Less, who serves as the co-President of the Clarendon Hills chapter of IWS and lives in Clarendon Hills with husband Patrick and their two children. “I always tear up during the speeches thinking about how much good we do for those who truly need us.” Indeed, the chapter has raised close to $700,000 over the last five years to make it easier for struggling families in the Chicagoland area while also helping patients at the Angel Harvey Family Health Center, which offers an innovative healthcare model that integrates primary medical care, dentistry, optometry, child development, and behavioral health services in a single central location. And while collectively helping the underserved throughout the year with additional events such as The Witches Ride and Luminaria, this blessed group of women that find themselves as a part of the Clarendon Hills chapter of IWS has become a family of sorts, all working together for a common cause. “As a member of the Clarendon Hills chapter of the Infant Welfare Society, you work closely with women you may otherwise have never interacted with,” remarks Alsman. “It’s a way to give back while expanding your social circle. Personally, this group brought me and my now business partner and dear friend closer together as we worked on the benefit’s silent auction team 10 years ago.” “IWS has given me the opportunity to create lasting friendships with people I might not have met otherwise,” adds Less. “Clarendon Hills is a small town and people are always pulled in a million directions. But we come together for this. I will always be grateful for these women.” Light Up The Night Roaring Twenties is February 3, 2024, at the Westin Lombard. O
ne thing is for certain. The annual Misericordia Women’s League (MWL) Heart of Gold Gala is a must-attend for many people. Always uplifting and surely inspiring, this is a family affair with generations of local dynasties coming together to support the worthiest of organizations. Misericordia opened its doors in 1921 as a maternity hospital for women of meager means. A little more than 30 years later, Misericordia recognized an even greater need in society—helping children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Today Misericordia provides the highest quality of care to more than 600 children and adults in an environment that fosters independence, dignity, acceptance and spirituality. Its exceptional programming, offered on its 37-acre campus and surrounding community, provides a full continuum of care, services and outreach programs. The mission extends beyond the residents by providing peace of mind to their families. “Misericordia’s mission is to help God’s most vulnerable people and that is what drives me, Sister Rosemary Connelly, Chairman of the Misericordia Foundation, Father Jack Clair, Executive Director, and everyone at Misericordia Home. Their dedication is so inspiring,” says Coffey. Misericordia Home provides a continuum of care and support for children and adults of all faiths and Heart of Gold cultures who have intelwinners Jo lectual and developmental Marie Ferro and disabilities. Led by the Cathy Hofmann inspiring Sister Rosemary Connelly, Misericordia makes an enormous difference in the lives of residents, commuters, and their families. “Misericordia’s mission is to help God’s most vulnerable people, and that is what drives me. Sister Rosemary and everyone at Misericordia Home’s dedication is so inspiring,” says Coffey. Groups all around the Chicago area fundraise for Misericordia. The growing Women’s League, established in 1996 and now up to 185 members, is made up of dedicated women from the western suburbs. Last year the group presented a check for $1,215,000 to Misericordia. It’s an incredible sum, but just a fraction of what the organization needs to thrive. League members are hoping to top it this year at the Westin Lombard on February 24 when they welcome
guests to enjoy a band, raffle, live and silent auctions, and heartwarming testimonials from families affiliated with Misericordia. A highlight of the evening is the presentation of the Heart of Gold award. The 2024 honorees are Jo Marie Ferro and Cathy Hofmann. This dynamic duo has always worked as a team. Among the many tasks large and small that they’ve cheerfully taken on for the MWL are chairing the benefit, leading ad sales for the program book, and putting together the Heart Gallery, which is a collection of member’s photos and inspirational quotes in the program. “Jo Marie and Cathy are always first to jump up and volunteer, say yes to what is asked of them and they bring such joy and positive vibes to our league. You can’t help but smile and laugh when you are with them,” says Coffey. “This is the most meaningful work, and being a part of the league, surrounded by so many wonderful women has been a joy in my life over the years,” says Ferro. Hofmann adds, “There is no better cause, no better group of women, and nowhere I’d rather spend my time. What an extra special honor to receive the Heart of Gold award with Jo Marie, my dear friend and fellow volunteer.” With two solid gold award winners and a date that’s purely golden, the theme As Gold As It Gets is more than appropriate. With a new venue and the continued spirit of attendance, the evening is expected to exceed the record of 650 set in 2023. Long time attendees will be delighted by new surprises and first timers will be energized by the sheer joy projected by everyone involved with Misericordia. It might just be the ultimate winter blahs buster. MWL President Catie Lee encourages everyone who enjoys supporting a good cause to round up a group of friends and head over to the Westin for As Gold As It Gets. “Join us for one of the best nights of the year. Your support will help the residents of Misericordia and we guarantee a lively evening to remember.” Those who can’t attend can become sponsors or purchase tickets for the Split The Pot of Gold 50/50 raffle. Misericordia appreciates every bit of support from the community. It’s the only way for this special place to continue the mission and operate at the highest level. The Misericordia Women’s League Heart of Gold benefit is Saturday, February 24, 2024 at The Westin Lombard. heartofgoldbenefit.org

eet Donovan Laux, a rising star in the world of fashion design. Hailing from Hinsdale and navigating her way as the youngest among seven siblings, this burgeoning designer is currently a senior at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and making her mark. Over this past summer, Laux elevated her design prowess to new heights embarking on an exciting journey in a highly coveted role as a design intern for LoveShackFancy in New York City. With graduation on the horizon, Laux is primed for the world of fashion and is ready to take it by storm. Immersed in a world of style from the start, Laux’s fascination with fashion was cultivated by her three older sisters and an exceptionally chic mother. “I am extremely inspired by the women in my own family,” she says. “Each one of my sisters is pursuing their passions, working to support themselves, and exploring all
the joys of the world,” she says, “and my mom is the most fashionable, hardworking, and caring person I have ever met, and she inspires me every day.” Laux’s mother is a home designer and has taught her to always follow her dreams and put her all into doing what she loves. “These women are fun-loving, generous, kind, and beyond cool and I am beyond thankful for their unwavering love and support of me.” But the allure of meticulously curating outfits and infusing them with her unique style captivated her from a tender age. “I would methodically pick out my own outfits and bring my own flair and creativity,” she says. However, it was during her college years that a newfound passion for sewing truly took root. It was in the pursuit of a college program that Laux crystallized her conviction: design was where her heart belonged. Through her designs, Laux delves into the multifaceted realm of the female experience. “My style is eclectic, fun, experimental, and

“My style is eclectic, fun, experimental, and faminine...” feminine,” she says. “I design for people like myself, who want to feel good, have fun, and live without fear.” She expresses her design with a keen interest in exploring the intricacies of corsetry, lingerie, and most recently, bridal wear. “I want people to see my garments as tools for the uninhibited, self-expression, and as protective armor in the world,” she says. Her favorite piece to create is a corset because of the structure and shaping of the body which creates a graceful and delicate outcome. “Corsets are strong, they are made with hard work and shaped with steel bones,” she says. “I find corsets to be very representative of both my design ethos and my aesthetic.” Just recently, Laux created a wedding corset and skirt from the 1840s. “I loved working on this and looking forward to expanding on this in my future designs,” she says. “I am very inspired by and love researching history and interpreting it through my own lens” Working with a combination of delicate and translucent fabrics as well as structural and strong, Laux finds that the juxtaposition of these two elements represents the kind of woman she wants to be: “Gentle and feminine, but also strong,” she says. She also enjoys working with denim. “I find that the accessibility and laid-back nature of denim is fun to experiment with and bring into new realms.” As for her creative process, it can go one of two ways. “Either I begin with an idea that I research, usually within the realm of women’s history, and soak up as much information as I can and then move into sketching and materials I want to use,” she says. “This is the best way for me to work on building a collection or breaking down ideas and filtering through my own brain.” The second way she works is more for creating one-off pieces, typically independent of a collection. “Working this way allows me to freely move into material and experiment without any preconceived notions or ideas,” she says. “Sometimes these pieces will inspire future collections, but I also enjoy just experimenting and seeing where things go.” As Laux wraps up the first semester of her last year of school, she reflects on a productive journey marked by the creation of two distinct collections, each accompanied by a meticulously crafted garment. The first collection explored sustainability in fashion and specifically the ethics and recycling of undergarments. “Sustainability is a major issue of the fashion industry,” she says. In order to do her part, Laux doesn’t support fast fashion. “It is important
to me to understand the ethics of other companies before buying from or supporting them in any way,” she says. The second collection explores London in the 1840s specifically weddings, wedding traditions, brides, and the development of the white wedding dress. “I have also worked on two independent corsets and some embellishment techniques such as feather work, embroidery, and beading.” Next semester she will design and fabricate a three-look collection still to be determined! Laux’s goal is to continue her independent work as well as become a career fashion designer under a larger and more established company. But for now, her pieces can be found on her Instagram and sold on a commission basis. “Expressing yourself and using fashion as a tool in your daily life is a powerful thing that I believe everyone should take ownership of,” she says. “Your clothing tells your story—say what you want to say!”

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR NON-MARITAL PROPERTY WORDS BY MICHONE RIEWER PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
W
hen it comes to divorce, one of the most contentious issues is property division. As the saying goes, “what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine,” is not always the case. In Illinois, marital property is divided equitably between the spouses, which means that each spouse is entitled to a fair share of the marital assets. However, non-marital property is not subject to division and remains with the spouse who owns it. Therefore, it’s important to keep your non-marital property separate from marital property to avoid it being converted to marital property. So, what is the difference between the two? Marital property is any property that is acquired during the marriage, regardless of whose name is on the title or on the bank account. Non-marital property is any property that is acquired before the marriage or acquired during the marriage as a gift or inheritance. It can also include property that is excluded by a valid agreement, such as a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement. There are exceptions. Here are some tips on how to keep your non-marital property separate from marital property: KEEP ACCURATE RECORDS It’s important to keep accurate records of all your non-marital property, including bank statements, deeds, titles, retirement statements and receipts. This will help you prove that the property is non-marital and belongs solely to you. Don’t commingle funds: Avoid commingling your non-marital property with marital property. For example, if you inherit money from your parents, don’t deposit it into a joint bank account that you share with your spouse. Instead, deposit it into a separate account that is solely in your name and never put your income (marital) into the account. USE A PRENUPTIAL OR POSTNUPTIAL AGREEMENT A prenuptial or postnuptial agreement can help you protect your non-marital property in case of divorce. These agreements can
specify which property is non-marital and how marital property should be divided in the event of a divorce. The agreement can even make income or property that would usually be marital, nonmarital. KEEP YOUR NON-MARITAL PROPERTY SEPARATE Keep your non-marital property separate from marital property. For example, if you own a house before the marriage, don’t add your spouse’s name to the title. Instead, keep the title solely in your name. BE CAREFUL WITH GIFTS If you receive a gift during the marriage, it’s important to keep it separate from marital property. For example, if your parents give you a car as a gift, don’t title it jointly with your spouse. DON’T USE NON-MARITAL PROPERTY FOR MARITAL PURPOSES If you use your non-marital property for marital purposes, for example, if you use your inheritance to pay for a family vacation, it’s gone, and you will not be reimbursed. GET LEGAL ADVICE If you’re unsure about the status of your property, it’s important to get legal advice. An experienced family law attorney from Strategic Divorce can help you determine which property is nonmarital and how to protect it. Keeping your non-marital property separate from marital property is essential to avoid it accidentally being converted to marital property. By following these tips, you can protect your non-marital property and avoid converting your inheritance or a gift into a marital asset that must be equitably divided in case of a divorce. Serene Escapes and Wellness Wonders
A Journey through Amanyara in Turks and Caicos WORDS BY MIMI WHITNEY

estled along the pristine shores of Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, Amanyara stood as a haven of serenity and luxury, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in a world where azure waters met powdery white sands. My journey to this exclusive paradise began with a plane ride that transported me to a dreamscape of tropical allure. As the plane descended, the vibrant hues of turquoise waters unfolded beneath, revealing the mesmerizing mosaic of the

Caribbean. Amanyara, a name that resonated with tranquility and elegance, promised an escape from the ordinary, and I eagerly embraced the anticipation that filled the air. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the warm sea breeze that whispered tales of distant adventures. The architecture of Amanyara seamlessly blended with the natural landscape, a modern ode to the island’s rich heritage. The open-air lobby embraced me with its minimalist design, where polished stone and wooden accents harmonized with the sounds of rustling leaves. After a seamless check-in, I was escorted to my pavilion – a sanctuary of understated luxury. The expansive glass doors opened to reveal a private beach and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. The interior, bathed in The Bar at Amanyara soft sunlight, exuded an air of serenity, a cocoon of comfort designed to embrace the weary traveler. Eager to explore, I wandered through the resort’s lush gardens, where bougainvillea vines painted the landscape with bursts of fuchsia and coral. The rhythmic cadence of my footsteps led me to the beach, where the pristine sands stretched like a canvas waiting to capture the footprints of wanderers. Amanyara’s private beach, fringed by palm trees, invited me to recline on a sunbed and let the world slip away with the gentle lullaby of the waves. The resort’s commitment to sustainability became evident as
I dined at the Beach Club. The culinary offerings, a symphony of local flavors and international influences, were a testament to Amanyara’s dedication to culinary excellence and responsible sourcing. Fresh seafood graced my plate, each bite a celebration of the island’s bountiful offerings. The following day, a sense of adventure beckoned, and I set out to explore the vibrant marine life that lurked beneath the surface. Amanyara’s PADI-certified dive center offered a gateway to the world-renowned reefs of Turks and Caicos. The underwater realm revealed a kaleidoscope of colors as schools of tropical fish danced around coral gardens. Majestic sea turtles glided gracefully, and the occasional glimpse of a nurse shark added an exhilarating touch to the dive. Back on dry land, my treatment with Amanyara’s spa awaited. The signature treatments, drawing inspiration from ancient healing traditions, promised to rejuvenate both body and soul. The skilled therapists led me through a sensory journey, and as I surrendered to The Artists Villa

the healing touch, the worries of the world melted away. Evenings at Amanyara unfolded in a symphony of sunset hues. The resort’s main pavilion, perched atop a rocky promontory, offered panoramic views of the horizon. As the sun dipped below the edge of the ocean, casting a warm glow over the landscape, we gathered to savor cocktails that mirrored the palette of the sky. The sense of community, fostered by the intimate setting, transformed strangers into companions, connected by the shared joy of witnessing nature’s masterpiece. Dinner at Amanyara’s signature restaurant was a culinary journey that mirrored the diversity of the island itself. The chefs, masters of their craft, showcased the freshest local ingredients in a menu that celebrated the fusion of Caribbean and Asian influences. Each dish, a work of art on the plate, transported my taste buds to
new heights, leaving an indelible memory of culinary excellence. Holistic well-being extends to a diverse array of activities, including invigorating Pilates sessions and the spirited game of pickleball. The dedicated Pilates pavilion provides a setting for guests to engage in mindful movement, enhancing strength and flexibility under the guidance of expert instructors. The Pilates experience at Amanyara was a rejuvenating journey for both my body and mind. For those seeking a more dynamic and social activity, Amanyara’s pristine pickleball courts beckon. We enjoyed the thrill of this rapidly growing sport, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. The joy of a friendly pickleball match under the Caribbean sun added a lively dimension to the wellness offerings at Amanyara, ensuring us with a well-rounded and enjoyable stay. As our time at Amanyara drew to a close, we found solace in the rhythm of the waves and the whispers of the wind. The memories woven into the fabric of this luxurious retreat would forever linger, a tapestry of moments that celebrated the beauty of Turks and Caicos and the hospitality of Amanyara. As I bid farewell to this haven of tranquility, I carried with me not just the sun-kissed glow of my skin but also the warmth of a hospitality that transcended expectations, a true testament to the allure of Amanyara in Turks and Caicos. THE KITCHEN Though large, the original kitchen left the family feeling claustrophobic. Removing a large wall opened the kitchen up to the great room, connecting the two important spaces and creating an indoor/outdoor flow. A carefully chosen monumental backsplash is the focal point here. Bold and dramatic, in a rich, deep green color with beautiful cloud-like veining that is echoed in the artful light fixture. The finishes are clean and organic and the whole room is very organized.

THE GREAT ROOM With beauty in every direction, the Great Room offers the perfect solution for taking in the backyard and pool views, being a part of what’s happening in the kitchen, and occasionally binge watching their favorite shows, this incredible sofa is the answer. “We chose this grand curving sofa with eyecatching angles. It sits on a round rug creating a space that’s wonderful for family time and welcoming for having friends or business associates over,” says Collander. The sunroom is now a breakfast and homework room.

THE DINING ROOM Design director Jessica Johnston worked closely on the custom finishes of the highly polished stone table by Atelier Adriana Hoyos. “We created these king and queen chairs on either end of the extra-wide stone table. It allows for a really dynamic way of hosting,” says Collander. She calls the Arteriors chairs “shockingly comfortable.” Dramatic walls and artwork complete the room. In the Lauren Williams fiber artwork, the owners liked the upward trajectory. “They are both businesspeople and that line represents success. It’s nice when homeowners feel such a personal connection to their artwork,” Collander says. PODCAST PAIR: TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM Family Law Attorney Morgan Stogsdill and comedian Andrea Rappaport are changing the way we talk about divorce with their podcast, How Not to Suck at Divorce.
M
WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSIE HEARN PHOTOGRAPHY
organ Stogsdill is Partner and Head of the Family Law Group at Beermann LLP, a top family law firm in Illinois with a slate of high-profile clients. Stogsdill also happens to be half of the broadcast team behind the podcast, How Not to Suck at Divorce, which is now one of the top podcasts about divorce in the world with hundreds of thousands of listeners. It all started during the pandemic when people flocked online looking for human connection. Stogsdill noticed divorce seemed to be something of a taboo subject. People didn’t want to talk about it. But there was an exception. Andrea Rappaport, a comedian and marketing/brand manager, was openly talking online about the challenges of her divorce and she and Stogsdill met and hit it off. “Seeing what Andrea was openly discussing about her divorce, I knew we could help some people if she was willing to continue to share her experience. I had never met her prior but upon meeting, we hatched this idea of this podcast to deliver real information with humor, not knowing where it would go,” Stogsdill says. “And in a few short years, we are top four in the world for divorce. We have companies advertising now on the podcast and it’s just blown up.” Stogsdill says the podcast is designed to help people determine whether or not they want a divorce and if they are already in the divorce process, to do it better by offering good information and humor. The podcast has a lot of laughter and that’s part of the reason for its audience growth. Levity can be a tonic for people going through stressful times. The two podcasting partners came about the project and the topic of divorce from two different angles, but they both were determined to make the subject less painfully boring. “If something is boring, then nobody is going to lean in and pay any attention to it. It’s like you wouldn’t listen to a podcast about how to properly perform a root canal because it just sounds terrible and getting a divorce sounds terrible,” Rappaport says. “It’s a totally sucky process that nobody wants to go through.” Rappaport says there’s an opportunity to speak to people in a different way and give them what they actually need, which is a chance to take a breath, give them some comedic relief, and by allowing them to laugh, they can exhale. Once you get someone to
exhale, they lean in and are more open to learn. The title of the podcast stems from Rappaport’s own experience. She really did suck at divorce, she says, making all the mistakes. But it also reflects her and Stogsdill’s determination to send the message that this isn’t just another podcast about divorce. They wanted to shake up the market. “We wanted to communicate in the title alone that this show was not going to be like every other show out there. We picture it like a late-night talk show that just happens to be about divorce,” Rappaport says. “It’s inappropriate at times, which mostly comes from me. Morgan is like the polished, professional version of me and I’m the loose cannon.” At its heart, Stogsdill says, How Not to Suck at Divorce is about
helping listeners find their way through the hazy times of divorce, and that includes tapping her network of family law attorneys around the country. “One of the things that we’ve always said on the podcast is the worst thing you can do is get in the wrong hands,” she says. “I don’t care if you have $1 or $1 billion, ask us for referrals so we can get you to the right place that fits your needs.” To subscribe to the podcast, visit hownottosuckatdivorce.com and follow @hownottosuckatdivorce on Instagram.. MAGIC MOMENTS
Clarendon Hills-based business, The Park Planners, provides highly customized experiences for families who want to maximize their vacations to Disney properties, including Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and more.
C
WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
olleen Bentley grew up going to Walt Disney World in Florida with her family. As a young teenager with very young siblings, she loved planning her family’s trips to make sure everyone enjoyed the experience. She would make—and FedEx would print— little itinerary books that mapped out each day. Which parks they would visit, which restaurants they would eat at, which FastPasses they would run to get (they were still old paper versions back then). It was in 2018, when she visited Disney World with her own family, that she realized she could turn her youthful passion for planning into a business. She was walking around the theme park and noticing people queueing in hour-long lines for rides and the business idea presented itself. “We never waited more than 10 or 15 minutes for even the big rides. We just knew how to maneuver so well through the parks, what time to get there, which rides to hit first. There’s a lot of strategy to it,” Bentley says. “You definitely notice all of the families standing around looking at a park map for where to go next.” When she returned from that trip, she came up with the idea of a boutique travel planning business that focuses exclusively on Disney properties, including Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disney Cruises. Not just booking travel and hotels but creating customized experiences for families based on their individual interests. “I’ve always wanted to have my own business and wondered what that would look like,” she says. “Disney was always a passion of mine and I’ve always loved planning trips, so I came up with
this idea of a concierge planning service.” The Park Planners creates tailored experiences for parents, and particularly their children, to really help maximize their time at the parks. If your child has a favorite Disney character, your itinerary will include precisely when and where that character can be met in the park to light up your child’s face. Snap a photo. The company also notes children’s heights so they know what rides they can and can’t hop on. Their strategic itinerary is unique to each family, because no two families are the same. “There aren’t many services out there that offer the level of detail, customization, and high-end experience that we do,” Bentley says. “Each family has one Concierge Planner from my team assigned to work with them from start to finish.” This includes handling any issues that may arise during the trip. The company texts and communicates with clients throughout the vacation, making dining reservation changes or other adjustments that might come up. “At Disney World there’s so much to do. There are four parks, two water parks, and 20-plus resorts. You’re not going to be able to see and do it all,” says Bentley. “Our job is to help prioritize what is appropriate for the family and what their kids will enjoy the most.” Bentley grew up in Hinsdale and now lives in Clarendon Hills with her own family. She opened a beautiful storefront in downtown Clarendon Hills almost a year ago. For more information about The Park Planners, visit parkplanners. com or stop by their storefront at 227 Burlington Avenue in Clarendon Hills.

EFFICIENT LUXURY Legendary Spa’s new location in downtown Hinsdale offers clients luxury spa services in a beautiful, newly appointed setting. WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

ryn Kingsley grew up in Scottdale, Arizona and after getting her business degree at Arizona State University quickly established a successful career in the corporate world. But after 15 years she yearned to establish a more personal outlet for her passion to connect with and give back to her community. In 2021, as the pandemic was sweeping the country, Kingsley opened Legendary Spa in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. It wasn’t the best timing to launch a business that provided in-person services, but she applied her business acumen and philosophy of relying on the long game to build her business. It worked. In just under three years, Kingsley opened four more Legendary Spa locations in Chicago and the suburbs, the most recent in downtown Hinsdale this past October. The newly renovated Hinsdale spa offers not only top-notch spa services such as skin care, manicures and pedicures, eyebrow and eyelash treatments, and custom airbrush tanning, it is also designed to be a social gathering place for private parties. “We saw that during the pandemic people were moving out of the city and clients from the Western Suburbs didn’t really love that drive in to see us anymore but wanted to continue to receive the services that we offer,” Kingsley says. “We wanted to make sure people could continue to receive our services and Hinsdale made the most sense because a lot of our clients are in the Hinsdale area.” Kingsley attributes the company’s rapid growth to having a good team and maintaining a tight focus on quality of service. Legendary Spa offers a membership program that incentivizes clients to come back every month to maintain healthy skin. “We’re really selective about how we build, hire, grow, and create a good culture. The same with our clients,” she says. “We’ve got clients that have been with us since the very beginning so that’s how we do it. It’s the long game with our team and long game with our clients.” One value in particular provides the foundation for how Kingsley and her team operate Legendary Spa. They use the highest quality products for skin care and nails but keep their prices affordable. The idea, Kingsley says, is to develop a loyal base of cli-

ents that comes back each month. In the short-term, it may mean thinner profit margins, but having clients for life is the goal. “We focus on high quality services that gets the clients in and keeps them coming back on a regular basis. We get them into a routine using great products where they actually start to see results,” she says. “They tell us they’ve been going to this other place for years and not been able to see an improvement. With us, you’re coming in every month and you’re seeing the progress.” Another important value for Legendary Spa is to be involved in the communities in which it operates. It’s the reason Kingsley decided to leave corporate America and start the company. She wants her and her team to maintain personal connections with clients. “One of the reason I left corporate was because my ability to make a difference in the world was limited. I figured I could make a greater impact with my own business and giving that way,” Kingsley says. “We work with chambers of commerce and local groups trying to find out where there are areas that we can donate, whether it’s time, money, or services. Through that we’ve had the ability to make personal connections with a lot of people and that’s what we’ve built our business on.” Legendary Spa in Hinsdale is located at 43 South Washington Street, 630-672-7275, legendaryspa.com.
