LESLIE LEE
grew up locally in Clarendon Hills and Hinsdale, and attended Hinsdale Central, where she swam on the state championship teams and met her husband, Gary. Leslie says, “I never realized it while living through it, but growing up in Hinsdale was truly a blessing. It was, and still is, an amazing community that has everything a child could want, and everything parents would want for their children.”
When it was time for them to leave the city 15 years ago, it was an easy choice for Leslie and Gary to move back to Hinsdale. Both sets of parents were still living in the area and having them close by was important. Leslie was able to work with her father at a large local residential design firm, which he founded the year she was born. It was an amazing experience to work so closely with her dad for 18 years until he passed two years ago and she loved every second of it. Leslie has since followed in his footsteps and started her own residential design firm, Fourth Avenue Design Group, with two of her closest colleges and friends.
When she’s not designing kitchens and bathrooms for her clients, there are three things she absolutely loves: her family, golf, and traveling. Her girls are now old enough to join her on the golf course and appreciate international travel. The Lee family is headed for Europe this summer. With such a busy family, Leslie treasures the occasional weekend with nothing planned except just relaxing and hanging out as a family. She also enjoys her current position on the Hinsdale Zoning Board of Appeals, and loves to volunteer for various causes with her family.

Mantra? Hope for the best, but always plan for the worst. On your reading stack? The Great Displacement, it’s a new book that covers climate change. I prefer non-fiction. Podcast? Smartless. Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes are hilarious together. Favorite workout? Swimming laps. My kids love it too, so we workout together. Best grooming tip? Blowouts are a fun splurge. Whether it’s just for work or for a big event, they are worth it. Guilty pleasure? Milk Chocolate. We keep chocolate in several spots throughout the house. It’s a great pick-me-up. Early memory? Watching my Dad hand draw his blueprints when I was young. I was fascinated. Music you love? Everything but country. I love to mix it up, but if I had to pick only one genre, I’d choose Motown. Advice you would give to your younger self? Be confident - it shines through in everything you do.
WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
Your style is? Black on black for work, and comfy casual as soon as I return home. Favorite walk? We are walking distance from Fullersburg woods, so we head there all the time. It’s so peaceful. Favorite sounds or soundtrack? Living near the woods, I love when the birds start singing in the springtime. Can’t leave the house without? My to-do list always keeps me on track. Place to celebrate? Birthday dinners at Nabuki are a unanimous choice in our house. Best quick bite or hidden gem? The calzones at Guiliano’s are delish. Favorite festival or special event? Hinsdale’s Fourth of July Parade. Whether you are walking in the parade or watching, it’s Americana at its best. Best thing about the country? The people. Friends new and old here are amazing. Worst thing about the country? Mosquitos, for some reason they love me. The perfect day is? Golf with the family, dinner outside, and a glass of wine at home on the front porch with the neighborhood. We are so fortunate to have amazing neighbors.
WHEN IN TOWN
Your style is? Jeans and a chunky sweater with a great pair of boots. Favorite walk? Between the Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium is my favorite walk in Chicago. You can take in so much of the city’s gorgeous architecture and the lakefront all at the same time. Favorite sounds or soundtrack? I’m a huge John Legend fan. Can’t leave the house without? I don’t feel complete unless I have my sunnies. Place to celebrate? The seafood tower at Bavette’s is a true celebration. Best quick bite or hidden gem? La Scarola has the best Italian food ever! And Irazu is an amazing little Costa Rican place we stumbled upon. Favorite festival or special event? Chicago Restaurant Week is always a great excuse to get out of the house in the middle of winter and head downtown. Shop? I love browsing the cute boutiques and gift shops in Lincoln Park. Best thing about town? The choices, everything is right there for you. Worst thing about town? After living in the country for 15 years, the tiny Chicago parking spots give me anxiety. The perfect day is? It was brunch at Julius Meinl and a White Sox day game with the crew. But we will have to find a new brunch spot as Julius recently closed.

HAMMER TIME: DAVID WEBB EDITION
Hindman’s Karina Hammer shares her must-have David Webb pieces coming up at auction this month.
EDITED BY MORGAN HOGERTY / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HINDMAN AUCTIONS
Hindman’s May 16th Important Jewelry auction is full of classic and unique jewelry featuring diamonds, colored stones, and rare antique pieces. Among an array of jewelry by iconic designers, are the classic designs of revered American jeweler David Webb. Webb is best known for his bold, modern jewelry with yellow gold, colorful gemstones, alluring enamelwork, and exotic animal designs. His creations have been worn by celebrities including Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Helen Mirren. David Webb pieces continue to be produced in New York City today using his more than 40,000 original designs and drawings and remain highly sought-after and collectable.
Karina Hammer, a senior jewelry specialist at Hindman whom you may recall from our May 2022 issue, returns to Sheridan Road to share her thoughts on a few of the standout lots being closely watched by the team as they prepare for the sale.
Yellow Gold, Diamond, and Enamel Horse Bracelet
Estimate: $35,000–55,000
“David Webb is renowned for these eye-catching animal bracelets. This quintessential example in white enamel is fabulous and whimsical. He has been making animal jewelry since very early on in his career, so this would be a perfect first piece to own if you are new to collecting his designs.”
Yellow Gold and Diamond Necklace
Estimate: $10,000–20,000
“Looking for a classic gold necklace with a little more edge? Look no further than this linked yellow gold and diamond necklace. It would pair perfectly with a white collared shirt or dressing up a black dress.”
Diamond, Ruby, and Azurmalachite Necklace
Estimate: $25,000–35,000
“Lusting for something more colorful? I’d recommend this amazing Azurmalachite necklace, a true showstopper. This is such a powerful piece, and a great illustration of David Webb’s love of bold, vivid gems.”
Jade, Diamond and Lapis Ear Clips
Estimate: $7,000–9,000
“These vibrant earrings are another excellent display of Webb’s work. The contrast of translucent jade and opaque lapis lazuli is archetypal of Webb’s stone pairings in his jewelry.”
Yellow Gold Bangle Bracelet
Estimate: $8,000–12,000
“I would wear a gold cuff bracelet every day. If you don’t have a statement cuff like this in your collection, this would be an easy one to add. Plus, I love the ‘superhero’ vibe it presents!”
Interested in selling at auction? Whether your item is antique or contemporary, by David Webb or others, Hindman specialists can provide a complimentary assessment.
Bidding for the May 16th sale will begin at 10 a.m. CST and will be available in-person at Hindman’s Chicago saleroom and online via the Hindman Digital Bid Room. A Timeless Tradition
Kitchen Walk Co-Chairs Spill the Tea on This Year’s Annual Kitchen Walk

High tea at The Drake Oak Brook.
The village of Hinsdale is celebrating 150 years and what better way to continue the festivities than with the annual Kitchen Walk hosted by the Hinsdale Historical Society’s Women’s Board? A tradition in its own right, Kitchen Walk is in its 18th year and is bringing in new elements to mark this special anniversary.
The Women’s Board is paying homage to Hinsdale turning 150 by dubbing this year’s theme, Timeless Tradition—and the five homes featured are just that. “Once the homes were selected and finalized, Timeless Tradition was the theme that perfectly encapsulated the feeling that the Kitchen Walk co-chairs wanted to achieve with this year’s Kitchen Walk—honoring timeless Hinsdale homes and enforcing the importance of preservation and restoration for Hinsdale’s sesquicentennial,” says Lauren Kavanaugh, Kitchen Walk Co-Chair.
Like years past, the Kitchen Walk allows ticket holders the opportunity to tour the first floors of the featured homes. However, this year’s event is offering Premium Preview tickets, where ticket holders are able to access the five homes one hour earlier than trolley ticket holders and the general public. Additionally, local retail vendors will be inside the homes so guests can shop luxury items and view the high-tea, Tea Table displays—another new element to Kitchen Walk—all while enjoying and appreciating the home’s architecture, design and history.
“We are thrilled to welcome a local designer into each home to showcase an afternoon ‘Tea Table’ with their unique style,” says Stephanie Tuthill, Kitchen Walk Co-Chair. The Tea Table designers include Studio W, HomeCrafters, Molly Sikora, Lillian Gray and Haylie Read Designs. “Each Tea Table will combine the designer’s style with the home’s aesthetic to create a timeless design,” says Tuthill.
Each of the homes will host one luxury retailer offering items for sale that support the Hinsdale Historical Society. Retailers include Shop Anecdote, Socialvites, Game Set Style, Birdie Designs and Fumee Claire. Additionally, each of the homes will serve sips and bites from one of Hinsdale’s local restaurants. Restaurants include Gravy Lady, Il Mio, Nabuki, Fuller House and Vistro Prime.
“Following the walk, all ticket holders are welcome to attend our final stop at our premium sponsor, Airoom, in downtown Hinsdale for an exciting after-party,” says Tuthill.
Alicia O’Brien, Kitchen Walk Co-Chair, offers some helpful tips for ticket holders. “The Kitchen Walk takes place on May 12, the Friday before Mother’s Day, [so] it’s the perfect time to open your spring wardrobe—think florals and fun spring colors,” she says. Comfortable shoes are also a must. “Each house
will require all attendees to put booties on over their shoes to protect the homes,” she says, “so a flat heel or wedge is best for the ladies.” Purchase VIP Trolley tickets. “Trolleys come fully served with a special VIP pre-party, amazing sponsor-filled swag bags, refreshments served on board and Trolley Captains to guide you through the day,” she says. “It truly is the most relaxing way to enjoy the walk,” she says.
“The Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board is a volunteer service organization dedicated to supporting the Hinsdale Historical Society and its mission to bridge the past, present and future by engaging the community with its history and architecture,” says Kavanaugh. “Its goal is to foster the appreciation of Hinsdale history and architecture through fundraising, education and programs, and most importantly, its annual Kitchen Walk fundraising event.”
This local fundraising tradition supports the preservation of three historical and timeless local buildings: the Hinsdale History Museum, housed in an 1874 Italianate-style home; Immanuel Hall, a simple carpenter Gothic-style frame church built by local residents in 1900; and the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio, a unique cottage designed and built by the architect himself in 1924.
“I have never known a town with such a passion for community, history and philanthropy,” says O’Brien. “Hinsdale is a very special place and the Hinsdale Kitchen Walk showcases a lot of what this town has to offer.”
For tickets, visit Hinsdale Historical Society’s Women’s Board’s Kitchen Walk website, kitchen-walk.com.

AN ANCIENT CITY’S ALLURE
A recent visit to Marrakech revealed wildly different experiences from exploring the labyrinthian souk in bustling Medina to luxuriating at a tranquil five-star resort nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN
Ihave always dreamed of visiting Marrakech, a former imperial city founded almost 1,000 years ago. It is a place where Arabic and French words dance in your ears, and the culture is a confluence of Berber, Islamic, and European traditions.
Marrakech’s captivating charm has long enchanted the world’s greats. As Edith Wharton noted, “To visit Morocco is like turning the pages of some illuminated Persian manuscript.” Equally enamored, Winston Churchill pronounced to Franklin Roosevelt that Marrakech, “is the most lovely spot in the whole world.”
The “ochre city”—nicknamed for its red sandstone buildings—today is a major economic center home to mosques, palaces, gardens, and glorious architecture. While we expected the intensity of the crowded city, we were pleasantly surprised by the tranquility of our resort—The Oberoi, Marrakech. The juxtaposition of these two experiences made for a unique adventure in this ancient North African city. Let’s begin with an exploration of the energetic metropolis.
JOURNEYS HINSDALE LIVING 68

THE CITY
On our first full day in Marrakech, we set off with our Abercrombie & Kent guide, Samir, and our driver in a luxury vehicle. We zipped through the Marrakech streets as motorcycles (some bearing ladders or piled high with cement bags) careened by and pedestrians haphazardly crossed the lanes—behind the wheel or on foot, none heeded the rules of the road.
We began at the Majorelle Gardens. Originally designed in 1924 by French artist Jacques Majorelle, the garden is a tropical paradise surrounded by cobalt blue buildings, lily-covered and fish-filled ponds, and an assortment of enormous cacti. The Berber Museum, which tells the tales of North Africa’s most ancient people, is fittingly found at the heart of this urban oasis.
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum, conveniently located next door to the Majorelle Gardens, was our next destination. Here, we perused the designer’s most precious designs and learned how Marrakech influenced his collections. As Yves Saint Laurent observed until his visits to this vibrant city taught him the power of color, “everything was black.”
Next stop, the walled medieval city of Medina. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the “souk,” Morocco’s largest traditional market where we found a bewildering array of stalls and ateliers devoted to specific crafts. The dark and smoky blacksmith quarter, where a cacophony of hammers echoed and sparks danced in the air, was especially mesmerizing.
In search of the renowned Argan oil, we wound our way through the honeycomb of stalls illuminated by a golden light piercing through the planked roofs. The stalls contained every good imaginable from stacks of traditional Berber carpets and plaster carvings to piles of brightly colored clothing and equally vivid spices to an elaborate display of olives. After our guide introduced us to a reputable herboriste, we purchased bottles of the oil, an indigenous treasure, along with a few other elixirs promising eternal youth. After hours of souk-scouring, we took a break for lunch at Café Arabe—a lovely restaurant occupying a former riad, a traditional Moroccan house with an interior courtyard.
Once sated, we set off to explore several of Morocco’s most architecturally significant sites. When I first saw the exteriors of these buildings, I was surprised by their austerity. Samir explained that Islamic architecture resembles a geode—appearing nondescript on the outside but concealing jewels on the inside.
We began at the Bahia Palace, which with its ornate mosaics, delicately carved stucco and stunning Grand Courtyard is a remarkable example of Arab-Andalusian architecture. Dar El Bacha was our second stop and our favorite of the architectural tour. This extraordinary palace was the former residence of Thami El Glaoui, who ruled Marrakech for more than 40 years and was legendary for hosting lavish affairs for famous guests like Winston Churchill. Ben Youssef Madrasa is a stunning structure and was once the largest Islamic college in Morocco

housing as many as 800 students learning Islamic jurisprudence, literature, science, and history. Today, it is a historical site with tourists rather than students wandering the hallways and dormitories.
Leaving the former center for learning, we ventured into the Jewish Quarter called “Mellah.” The quarter’s name, the Arabic word for salt, pays tribute to the fact that many of the early Jewish residents were salt sellers. Historically salt was an important and precious commodity. In ancient times, sub-Saharan Moorish merchants traded one ounce of salt for one ounce of gold. A visit to the Salat el Alzama Synagogue, also known as the “Blue Synagogue,” and the Miaara Jewish Cemetery rounded out our exploration of the Jewish community’s long history in Marrakech.
We ended our city tour at Jemaa El Fna, the city’s main square where we found snake charmers, horse-drawn carriages, street artists, food stalls, and an assortment of goods for sale— a veritable symphony of sounds and smells. A glimpse of the famed Koutoubia Mosque, a symbol of the city with its 12thcentury Moorish minaret visible for miles, was the perfect end to our exciting day. As we drove back to our hotel, we watched the minaret fade into the distance and grew excited for the peace that awaited us at the resort.
THE OBEROI, MARRAKECH
Located 25 minutes from the city center is The Oberoi, Marrakech, a 25-acre oasis at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
Upon our arrival, an attendant dressed in a traditional Moroccan velvet selham (tunic) greeted us with his hand on his heart—a signature gesture of the Oberoi brand. The company’s motto “the guest is everything” is a sentiment woven into every aspect of the resort experience.
Beyond the unassuming ochre exterior lay an expansive courtyard dotted with decorative trees and at its center, a vast pool of water. At the courtyard’s far end, massive handcrafted wooden doors opened to reveal a sanctuary of design inspired by the traditional Moroccan and Andalusian architectural styles used in 14th-century grand palaces. The elements included intricately carved, soaring wood ceilings, wall mosaics composed of zellige tiles in vibrant colors and geometric designs, and towering panels of sculpted plasterwork subtly adorned with Arabic phrases such as “El Afia El Bakia” meaning “eternal health.” No surface is left untouched or unadorned.
We exited the main building via a beautiful marble corridor where a series of lanterns swayed under exquisitely carved marble arches illuminating the gleaming marble floors. En route to our private villa, we could see the Atlas Mountains in the distance. Our route took us along the resort’s “grand canal,” a scent-filled pathway filled with jasmine hedges and rosemary bushes. Scents from the acres of citrus and olive groves and the lavender field on the property further perfumed the air.
Passing under a canopy of olive branches, we found our private villa tucked in an exotic garden of flowers and palm trees. The villa matched the main building in elegance—an intricately patterned stone floor and carved cedarwood dome graced the entrance hall. The massive bedroom opened to a living/dining area that spilled into a private landscaped garden where bougainvillea trellises, lemon trees, and rosemary bushes surrounded our own pool. The bathing quarters (they are so much more than a “bathroom”) contained a large shower with a floor-to-ceiling glass door, which opened onto the courtyard for an open-air bathing experience. Birdsong and light breezes definitely elevated this morning ritual.

The Oberoi, Marrakech main pool
The Oberoi, Marrakech patio details
The Oberoi, Marrakech has three beautiful restaurants offering highly curated dishes created by the hotel’s talented chefs using the finest seasonal ingredients sourced from the Moroccan terroir. One “tree-to-table” ingredient is the cold-pressed unrefined olive oil produced from olives harvested from the property’s 2,500 olive trees.
We began our days with breakfast at Tamimt on a terrace overlooking the cypress tree and white rose-lined grand canal. In Berber, “tamimt” means “delight” and the eatery lived up to its moniker in every aspect—cuisine, service, and ambiance. The morning buffet was beyond measure and even included a tower of every imaginable kind of honey (think orange blossom, jujube, and eucalyptus). The honey was best sampled with croissants and pastries, their delicate layers adding to the sinful pleasure of each bite.
Dinner on Tamimt’s terrace was equally delightful. The view of the sun disappearing into the horizon and the moon moving across the backdrop of mountain peaks was the sublime end to every meal.
Siniman was another favorite for dinner. As “siniman” means the souls of the father and the mother in Berber, the restaurant’s rich fabrics, marble, zellige tiles, elaborately carved wood, and immense glowing fireplace invoke a cozy, warm feeling. Some nights we chose to dine under a blanket of stars and tables in the courtyard provided the perfect spot. I had so many favorites here but the selection of Moroccan salads—a visual delight, unlike any American salad—really stood out. For the main course, we ordered a Seabass Chermoula tagine with sweet bell peppers, tomatoes, and saffron potatoes. Lifting the lid of the earthenware pot released a deliciously heady scent and revealed a presentation as brilliant as the flavors.
Between all our delicious meals, we indulged in the resort’s many activities. In fact, there was such an array of activities that we only left the resort compound once venturing to the Agafay Desert for an evening of camel riding and dinner in a Bedouin tent at The White Camel Camp. Back at The Oberoi, Marrakech our lesson in the art of falconry from a member of Morocco’s
indigenous Kwassem tribe was a cultural delight. Following our falconry lesson, we discovered a palm-encircled pool with two floating pool decks at the center of the property’s olive grove. The bright tangerine towels dotting the pool area’s numerous day beds, chaise lounges, and hammocks contrasted beautifully with the pool’s lapis blue tile. Is it any wonder lounging poolside became a favorite activity?
One afternoon we swapped our pool lounges for massage tables at the Oberoi Spa, a serene oasis located on a small lake surrounded by orchards. Its location is highly symbolic because Islamic culture esteems water as a means of spiritual cleansing. Thus, as guests cross the lake to enter the spa, they figuratively leave the outside world behind and embark on a unique journey to well-being. In addition to soothing treatment rooms, lightfilled yoga studios, and a full workout facility, the spa contains an indoor pool and an interior maze garden. The resort’s signature wellness program, SAHA, offers a wide range of fitness options from morning runs with a fitness coach to cardio boxing. SAHA, named after the Arabic word for “health,” is a testament to The Oberoi, Marrakech’s commitment to making every moment of a guest’s visit healthier and more fulfilling.
As we made our way back to our villa from the spa, the sound of the Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer, echoed through the air. The soothing chant, which sounded five times a day from a nearby mosque, was a grand reminder that we were steeped in another culture in a faraway land.
Seeking a unique exploration of a country’s culture? Hoping to experience both the fervor of a bustling city and the tranquility of a world-class resort? Marrakech is your destination. Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer shares tips for finding the right divorce attorney to represent you and your family.
WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP
STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
In the same way that no one wants to have an illness, no one wants to get divorced. But like finding the right doctor, finding the right divorce attorney is critical to a successful outcome. To get the right fit, there are many things to consider.
Do you want a firm or do you want a person who works alone? Do you want someone who specializes in issues involving children? Do you want someone who’s familiar with small businesses? Do you want someone who understands executive compensation and restricted stock units? Do you want someone who is familiar with each of the judges in the county and can advise you regarding what to expect? Do you want someone who’s able to listen and can help you create a strategy for your family? Do you want someone who can quickly review and understand financial information? Do you want someone who understands retirement assets? Do you want someone who patiently answers your questions? Do you want someone who can write and effectively communicate? Do you want someone who is going to be a fierce and effective advocate in court? Do you want someone who can sit down at a conference table, find a creative solution, and bring people to the middle?
In my experience, every one of these qualities is important and in fact, you deserve to have nothing less than an attorney who has it all.
One of the common misconceptions is that if you want your divorce to be amicable, you should choose an attorney who does not specialize in trial or litigation. As a result, because you don’t want to go to trial and you don’t want to be involved in litigation, you choose someone with no trial experience. This could end up putting you at a disadvantage.
I have found that having an attorney who has the strength and experience to go to trial, when needed, is actually a deterrent to both litigation and trials. Strength changes everything. It’s much more effective to walk into a room to negotiate a settlement and create an amicable resolution if your attorney has the strength and experience to go to trial. You are much less likely to be bullied into a settlement that does not make sense.
Similarly, if you’re focused on child and custody issues, you may choose an attorney who only specializes in those issues and is not as experienced in the financial and property area of divorce. However, once the child issues are resolved, you’ll quickly learn that you need an attorney who has the knowledge and expertise in the
financial area to make sure that you and your children are financially set up for success. Both areas are important to the successful resolution of your divorce.
Again, just like when you find a new doctor, when choosing your divorce attorney, interview more than one. Ask questions, not only about the one issue that is most important to you but about each of the areas of divorce. Ask them about their strategy and notice whether they have listened to and responded to your questions and concerns. Find someone who will be pleasant to deal with, and who you feel is worthy of your trust.
The divorce process is much easier when you choose the right divorce attorney to guide you through the process.

Kitchen Walk Luncheon
Hinsdale Golf Club was the place to be for the sold-out Kitchen Walk Luncheon. Innovation in Restoration was the theme of the program, deftly presented by an expert panel in advance of the Hinsdale Kitchen Walk, to be held on Friday, May 12, 2023 and set to feature historic homes. An unusually warm and sunny day added a bit of je ne sais quois to the luncheon, which was a whirl of beautifully dressed guests.

Tablescapes
For 25 years, local supporters of quality healthcare have enjoyed the ultimate Sunday Funday at Tablescapes, the signature fundraiser of the Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary. This year, the lively event was a complete takeover of The Drake Oak Brook. The temperature outside was low but inside spirits were high as guests dropped their raffle tickets in support of their favorite member-designed tablescapes and dressed to impress with touches of roaring 1920s flair. Funds raised will support the Infant Welfare Family Health Center.
