EDITOR’S NOTE

N

ovember already? Fantastic, I’m brimming with gratitude these days and welcome the month of giving thanks. We celebrate two of our favorite local traditions in this issue. The Holiday Ball, which transforms The Community House (TCH) from the hardest working building around into a winter wonderland. With a nod to Gatsby, this year’s theme is the Roaring Twenties, and the chairs have a fabulous evening planned for guests, who will have opportunities to learn about programming at Willowbrook Corner. Those who didn’t snag a seat to the sold-out event can follow along here with beautiful photographs in a future issue. Salt Creek Ballet is a vibrant cultural force in the area. The school and company launched our incredible January cover star, Viola Pantuso into the stratosphere of professional ballet. The dancers will be presenting their delightful Nutcracker Thanksgiving weekend. First, catch up with the new Board of Directors and learn all about the new artistic vision. Our gorgeous Country Vs. Town star, Jeanne Hendrie, is deeply connected to The Community House. She and her husband co-chaired last year’s Holiday Ball, which ushered in a new era of quick sell-outs and increased corporate sponsorships. Jeanne serves on the Board of Directors of The Community House and will be among the 2023 revelers. Dinner Date takes a turn this month, right into Puttshack.

If you’ve been wondering about the experience at this modern take on the time-honored pastime of miniature golf, the word is both the golfing, and the food are good, and a nice break from holiday shopping. Our Publisher’s Profiles introduce a group of interesting entrepreneurs, all of whom have businesses where you want the best. LaMantia Design and Remodeling has a proud 50 track record of design/build projects. After being a customer for years, Andy Bizbub is taking Midwest Performance Cars to new heights. Images Med Spa has a gorgeous new location. And Diana Wagenbach shares a transformation she led through her interior design atelier, Studio W. Living + Giving is inspiring as always, especially beautiful Savannah Wood, who recently celebrated the end of her cancer treatment. This eighth grade Falcon cheerleader is famous for having the best cheer voice of anyone, but really the whole town has been cheering for her. Savannah, her parents Stacia and Stuart, and her brothers Torsten and Smith are the best of us. Enjoy it all and please be in touch. Gratefully, MICHELLE CROWE Editor-in-Chief michelle@jwcmedia.com

Talk of theTown Hinsdale Living’s guide to the area’s people, places, and things that you must know about

Love To Write Day National days can be silly, funny, or delicious. November 15 is National Love To Write Day, which feels worthwhile. Mark time on your calendar to journal, work on the great American novel you’ve always wanted to write, or even practice calligraphy for holiday cards and gift tags. Classical music and pots of tea are optional, but taking a couple of hours to put pen to paper or hit the keyboard is a must.

THE BUZZ TUCK IT The houseguests are coming, and they’re hoping for luxe linens. Pop into Yves Delorme for a sumptuous refresh to any suite. The Fugues Collection is a whimsical favorite, printed with a design celebrating herbs and the link between humans and nature. Renditions of chamomile, angelica, and thyme weave their way over the long staple combed organic cotton batiste comforter. Coordinate it with neutral sheets and top with (not too many) throw pillows for a welcoming haven they’ll appreciate. The New Classic Home

Yves Delorme

READ IT In her new book, The New Classic Home, beloved designer Paloma Contreras answers the most perplexing home design question: how does one design a space that successfully mixes traditional and modern elements? After all, the perfect home is harmonious and getting the balance correct can be challenging. Contreras walks readers through her four main techniques— color, texture and pattern, scale and proportion, and tension. With these in check, Paloma creates harmonious, balanced interiors even when the individual pieces are from different eras and styles. A forward by India Hicks makes this a must-add for any design library and an excellent gift for stylish friends. Available at Barnes & Noble Oakbrook Center.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN Jeanne wears Ralph Lauren Purple Label.

JEANNE HENDRIE

grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, surrounded by extended family and enjoying summers on Lake Michigan. Her parents are both from huge Irish Catholic families so there are always occasions to celebrate. “My mom is an incredible artist, and my dad does the NYT Saturday crossword without skipping clues,” she says. Jeanne considers herself lucky to remain close to her siblings and their families despite being scattered throughout the Midwest.

Jeanne, who always loved school, followed in her dad’s footsteps, and attended Notre Dame. Like many, she moved from South bend to Chicago after graduation to live with friends, wisely signing for an apartment before landing a job. While living in Lincoln Park, she received a Masters in Organizational and Multicultural Communication from DePaul University, which was put to good use fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois. She and her husband, Andrew, met at the Old Town Art Fair. Jeanne calls him the grounding force to her whimsy. They bought a house in Lakeview and welcomed three kids who are, “funny and independent and loved ‘too much,’” as the youngest says. The couple built a house within walking distance of two dear friends in Hinsdale and moved in 2019. Their life is crazy and wonderful. The family is always on the go—dinners, golf matches, baseball, gymnastics … the list goes on. There’s also a rewarding new role. “After nine years home with my kids, I went back to work this past spring. I received an offer to work for CASA of DuPage County, advocating for abused and neglected children. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up and I am so grateful I made the leap,” Jeanne says. Somehow, she found time to share some of her favorites with us. EDITED BY MICHELLE CROWE PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR AND MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

Mantra? “Never replace happy with happier.” On your reading stack? My favorite book of the summer (perhaps of all-time) was Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. I’m currently re-reading The Great Gatsby ahead of The Community House’s Roaring Holiday Ball! I’m also listening to The Covenant of Water by Abraham Varghese, but it is very, very long so it might be my only audiobook of the fall. What organizations do you support? For years I volunteered at The Community House’s after-school program in Willowbrook. The work they are doing to support families and invest in kids in the program is life changing. Beyond Willowbrook, The Community House is expanding their counseling services and focusing on their role as a hub for the community. I’m honored to serve on their board at this exciting time for them! Little Heroes League is another organization close to our hearts. Started by friends and inspired by their own experience, the organization supports babies born with multiple medical conditions by providing care coordination to assist both in-hospital and as kids head home. Little

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY Your style is? Ripped jeans and a sweatshirt Favorite walk? Fullersburg Woods, particularly this time of year! Can’t leave the house without? Sunglasses, YSL lipstick in Pink Celebration, and coffee! Place to celebrate? Champagne at RH. Sushi at Nabuki. Best thing about the country? Space! I love being in my house and looking out on trees and grass — kids running from yard to yard, houses decked out for the holidays, and the smell of bonfires. Worst thing about the country? There is nothing I don’t like about living in Hinsdale. I love it here! The perfect fall day is? 65 degrees. Early morning doughnuts from Kramer’s. Meet a friend at Toni’s for coffee in a real mug. Run to watch my son play flag football at The Community House and then drop my girls at BAM theatre. Stop into Anecdote in LaGrange to stock up on gifts. Cheer on the Irish. Enjoy a charcuterie board from Gone Grazy and wine on the patio with close friends.

Heroes League first partnered with Lurie Children’s Hospital and the program has quickly expanded to four level IV NICU hospitals across the country. Andrew serves on their board, and I help to coordinate their annual golf outing. Additionally, we are a host family for Safe Families, caring for kids and offering short-term respite for parents who need a break. Not only do I love the missions of these organizations, but I love that I’ve met so many incredible people through my connections to them. Favorite workout? The Mirror. I do a quick work-out every morning. It’s not everything, but at least it’s something! Best grooming tip? Eyebrow tinting. I love make-up and am routinely trying new tricks. Guilty pleasure? Kohler Spa in Burr Ridge Meaningful holiday tradition? When my friend had her daughter 10 years ago, I started the tradition of gifting her a special Christmas ornament, something reflecting life of the past year. I start looking for the perfect ornament each fall. I now do the same for my kids so they will one day have a beautiful collection of ornaments and a lifetime of memories on the tree. Advice you would give to your younger self? Set an alarm. Write in a journal. Remember birthdays.

WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? When I go back to the city now, it’s usually for a special occasion so always heels + lashes. I’ll often add a blazer and a cross-body bag. Favorite walk? Southport Avenue. I lived in the city for 16 years and while the corridor has changed over time, I still love the shops, the restaurants, the vibe. Place to celebrate? Champagne at RL. Sushi at Momotaro. Best quick bite or hidden gem? The Loews Hotel has rooms offering a perfect view of the Navy Pier fireworks. It’s magical. Favorite festival or special event? Cubs games at Wrigley Field. Shop? I recently brought my daughters to Unicorn World in Water Tower. Literally every item in the store sparkles.

They were in heaven. Best thing about town? The hustle and bustle. I loved sitting on the porch of our house in the city watching people come home from work, greeting neighbors. There is something inspiring about looking out and always seeing city lights on. Worst thing about town? Rats! I had one jump out of my stroller once … and, well, that was when we decided to move to Hinsdale. H I N S D A L E L I V I N G    41

here’s only one place to be on the first Saturday in December, and that’s The Community House (TCH). On this day, the beloved red brick building is transformed from the hardest working multi-purpose building around to a wonderland of holiday cheer, as beautiful as any ballroom and filled with convivial voices. It’s a yearly culmination of TCH’s commitment to strengthening connections with local neighbors and an important fundraiser for this nonprofit organization. The Community House has always been supported by the time, talents, and financial generosity of donors. Some are generational, with grands, parents, and teenagers who have all attended Fortnightly or played in the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. And some are new to the area and have fallen in love with the spirit of TCH and all its offerings. “When we moved from Chicago to Hinsdale, The Community House became a place for my whole family. It’s a big reason why we are so happy here. What a gift to have a place devoted to creating connections,” says co-chair Nicole Schroeder. Nicole, her husband Rick, and fellow chairpeople, Emily and Sean Maissami, Mary and Michael Osanloo, and Sabrina and Aluizio Ribeiro, are charged with creating an exciting evening that will fill TCH with guests for dinner, dancing, wine, and giving.

This year, fundraising efforts are focused on the continued expansion of programs and services to families living in an isolated and under-resourced section of DuPage County. TCH has served families in this area of unincorporated Willowbrook for more than 30 years through afterschool programs, summer camps, and counseling services, partnering with a school district that is within walking distance of the families’ homes. The program considers the critical hours after school and during the summer as “hours of opportunity” to allow kids to explore improved literacy comprehension, social-emotional learning, career exploration, financial education, and forming healthy habits. During this past year, programming expanded to include access to additional classes like tennis and babysitting certification, and this fall a new grade school basketball league will be launched. “Since its inception, the mission of TCH has ignited thousands of bright futures for young people through these programs, with 2023 being its busiest summer yet, with more than 100 kids in camp each day. In early 2024, TCH plans to open a satellite office that will place two licensed social workers within the community to provide young people and their families access to mental wellness services.” said Dan Janowick, Executive Director. Last year’s Holiday Ball was focused on the important counseling services TCH offers and Walk The Walk for Mental Health in May also

place that is close-by but isolated,” says Dan Janowick, Executive Director of The Community House. All these vital programs rely on donations. TCH is fortunate to have wonderful corporate sponsors and generous community contributors. The Holiday Ball celebrates those who make their mission possible. “The strong ticket sales and increase in corporate sponsors show how valued The Community House is to thousands of people,” Nicole Schroeder says. The Roaring Holiday Ball will be another night to remember. Those who are lucky enough to have tickets to the sold-out evening will be transported to West Egg for a spirited take on 1920s Art Deco elegance. Kristina Taheri Special Events converts Kettering Hall and the fieldhouse into spaces of extraordinary beauty. From private equity backed veteranowned coffee to PTSD relief Oak Brook’s Michael Gershenzon found new direction in a powerful friendship WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD

A

career in finance, with stints in New York and Chicago led Oak Brook’s Michael Gershenzon to leadership roles within private equity. Investment groups are privy to interesting operations and Michael is husband, father of three and an exceptionally kind heart, drawn to

opportunities with soul. Michael led investment in a veteran-owned coffee company, where he first encountered people openly living with the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health struggles. Through the coffee company he met veterans, including a gentleman named Sean who became a close friend, who gave him a new perspective on how difficult daily life can be for those who do. “I’ve lived a charmed life and have been incredibly fortunate to not have those challenges directly impact me,” Gershenzon says. Sean asked him to meet Dr. Eugene Lipov, who is a pioneer in treating PTSD. Feeling a little shaky in his own understanding of trauma, but trusting Sean implicitly, Michael agreed to meet the doctor. Dr. Lipov knows first-hand that trauma can be all-consuming. He grew up in Ukrainian SSR living with a veteran father stricken with PTSD, and a mother who suffered from debilitating depression eventually taking her own life. Dr. Lipov has witnessed the physical, emotional, and psychological impact that trauma can have on the lives of many. Additionally, in 2008, Dr. Lipov founded Erase PTSD Now, a nonprofit focused on eradicating post-traumatic stress from the lives of those impacted by it. The goal of the organization is to restore individuals, as well as affected families and communities, to a pre-trauma state. Erase PTSD Now designates most of its funding to the support of the dual sympathetic reset/stellate ganglion block treatment for survivors of trauma. 90% of donations

go towards the treatment of vetted applicants while the remaining 10% goes towards admin and care coordination costs. In bringing more attention to the symptoms of post-traumatic stress, Dr. Lipov is leading efforts to rename post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI). A recent survey showed that the stigma of a mental disorder keeps many people from seeking help, believing their diagnosis is not treatable and this negative association can lead to suicides, domestic violence, etc. While the term PTSD references posttraumatic stress as a “disorder”, it’s been proven to be a biological “injury” and should be referred to as PTSI, post-traumatic stress injury. Even the military community has expressed support for the name change. The meeting went well, but the story took a turn. In November of 2019 while outwardly happy and seemingly fine, Sean died by suicide. This galvanized Michael’s wish to be a part of something more meaningful. He and Dr. Lipov took the idea of a center for treatment to Sterling Partners. Three visionary partners at the firm saw the possibilities and Stella Health launched in February of 2020. ‘The worst time in the history of time to launch into health care,” Gershenzon says wryly. They shifted and evolved, successful guiding the opening of a center for excellence here in our area. Thousands of Dr. Lipov’s procedures are being done each year among Special Forces and the military at Fort Bragg alone. Dr. Lipov has done grand rounds on his revelatory relief at Walter Reed in Washington, D.C., and Womack Military Hospital on Fort Bragg. This Veterans Day, those who served can receive the same treatment locally. So can anyone who would like to feel their best mentally. All thanks the power of capital combined with caring and one financier’s wish to do more with his life. stellacenter.com The staff at Stella Health

Salt Creek Ballet Continues to be En Pointe

A Timeless Interpretation of The Nutcracker with a New Board of Directors Taking Centerstage

T

WORDS BY JANIS MVK

he Salt Creek Ballet has been cultivating holiday traditions for families and performanceart aficionados through its annual rendition of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Now, with a new board of directors taking centerstage, the ballet school is looking forward to a fresh approach in continuing to amplify the school’s achievement of being a top-tier performance ballet company. Setting the stage for success, the board of directors welcomes five new members including Julia Costello, Susan Langenfeld, Melissa Barnes Mann, Susan Santefort, and Jane Walker. “Our board has always been extraordinarily dedicated and passionate about Salt Creek Ballet and works tirelessly to ensure its success and reputation,” says Gibby Kirby, executive director. “With the addi-

tion of the new board members, the vision is to not only continue to capitalize on the 38-year legacy of this organization, but to also continue enhancing the dance experience for our dancers, families, audience members, and community partners.” The new board members join Lauren Kavanaugh, president; Kathleen Sievertsen, treasurer; Katharine Hamilton, assistant treasurer; Judy Sipek, secretary; O.J. Mavon, Julie Mayer, Christine Schultz Neumann, Veronica Norman, Juhl Patterson, Carolyn Schanzer, as well as the advisory and honoree members. “Together, they see the importance of arts in our communities and that Salt Creek’s mission is to deliver a professional experience to all,” says Kirby. Historically, the board has been known to produce exquisite fundraising events and efforts, and this season is no exception. As

a not-for-profit organization, the school relies heavily on charitable donations in order to present such elaborate performance productions. For this season the board starts it off with the annual Partner With Us: A Nutcracker Gala, funding the three-week performance engagement. The gala takes place on November 10 at Hinsdale Golf Club and is one of the two major fundraisers the new board will be hosting this season. “This gala raises funds to offset the cost of professional guest artist fees, a revamp of the always-anticipated Sugar Plum Party, and expansion of the concessions and boutique offerings at the Hinsdale Central Auditorium,” says Lauren Kavanaugh, president of the board of directors. Over the last couple of years, the ballet company has sought to make The Nutcracker a full experience both on and off stage. “The goal,” says Kirby, “ is to immerse our audience members the moment they walk in the door.” And this production will accomplish just that. Newer elements will be brought into the production, turning an otherwise traditional rendition into one with some new perspectives. This production will be the second year the show will expand the snow effect in the first act from the stage to the audience. “Additionally, Salt Creek Ballet has made mindful adjustments to some of the scenes, costumes, and characters to honor and respect cultural representation,” says Erica De La O, artistic director. “What also makes this production special is our cast of students sharing the stage today’s international stars from companies such as The Joffrey Ballet, Ballet National de Cuba, and Boston Ballet,” says Kristopher Wojtera, artistic director. “We enjoy connecting the children and our patrons with the professionals of today.” “The experience of sharing the stage with professionals is invaluable for our student’s development, as it is for our community to be inspired by their beautiful dancing,” says De La O. Putting on a production of this quality is quite tremendous. “The cast of dancers rehearse throughout the week and each Saturday from mid-September through the end of November in preparation for the performances that begin Thanksgiving weekend,” says Wojtera. “The dancers learn their individual roles, and then those are pieced together with other dances until each scene of The Nutcracker comes together from curtain to finale.”

Gand Jête

“In addition, our families all put in numerous hours to assist in making it all happen,” says Kirby. “They fill over 400 volunteer slots during the course of our three-week engagement and spend countless hours prior to the performance to ensure all aspects of the production are of the highest caliber.” The Nutcracker takes the stage on November 25 and 26 at the Hinsdale Central Auditorium. During the Saturday show, audience members will be able to see and take photos with Santa; and on Sunday, the show will feature the annual Sugar Plum Party. “The Sugar Plum Party is an audience favorite!” says Kirby. “Audience members will be able to take photos on the stage with set pieces and props.” The Field House at Hinsdale Central will also transform into a winter wonderland where audience members can get pictures and autographs with the Salt Creek Ballet dancers and enjoy sweets, treats, and refreshments. Tickets are on sale now. Salt Creek Ballet, 98 E. Chicago Avenue, Westmont, 630-769-1199, saltcreekballet.org. The Nutcracker finale

STEP 4 OF THE STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS TM

MAINTENANCE WORDS BY MICHONE RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

I

believe knowledge of the divorce process provides strength and peace of mind to those facing an often complicated and difficult time. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™. My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved and two distinct steps when no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts. In this month’s column, we will examine a step that occurs in all divorces—maintenance. Sometimes called alimony or spousal support, maintenance is supplemental income paid from one spouse to the other after their divorce. Simply put, the purpose of this income is to allow both spouses to live the same lifestyle that they were accustomed to during their marriage. Of course, this simplistic view isn’t entirely realistic. When two people divorce, even though their combined income will likely stay the same, their expenses often nearly double as there are two separate households with separate rent or mortgages, utility bills, and other costs. When determining who will pay maintenance, the primary factor is income. The lower wage earner will always be the one to receive spousal support. Any and all reliable sources of money, not necessarily just employment, should be identified and used in the calculation. This can include regular family gifts, investments that have regular returns, perks from employment, or cash from side projects. A common misconception about maintenance is that it is at the court’s discretion. While this was the case until 2016, courts must now use a statutory formula. Currently, annual maintenance paid equals 33 percent of the higher wager earner’s net income minus 25 percent of the lower wage earner’s net income. There are some exceptions to this equation. First, the amount of money the lower wage earner receives cannot exceed more than 40 percent of the couple’s combined net income. If the amount does exceed it, 40 percent of the combined net income is used as a cap.

Additionally, should the couple’s combined gross income be in excess of $500,000 annually, any maintenance awarded on income in excess of $500,000 can be calculated differently, at the judge’s discretion. For spouses who do not have their own income, such as a stay-athome parent, an imputed income is often entered into the equation to represent their earning potential. This adjustment reduces the maintenance obligation for the higher earner. While temporary maintenance may begin during the divorce, standard maintenance payments begin monthly once the divorce is completed but, in most cases, they do not go on indefinitely. How long maintenance is paid is determined by a formula. In Illinois, maintenance lasts a percentage of the time the couple was married, with the percentage getting larger the longer the marriage lasted. For example, if the couple was married for less than 5 years, the maintenance period is 20 percent of the length of the marriage. If the couple was married between 10 and 11 years, the maintenance period is 44 percent of the length of the marriage, and for couples married 15 to 16 years, the maintenance period is 64 percent of the length of the marriage. If the couple was married for more than 20 years, the court will order maintenance for a period of time that is either equal to the length of the marriage or indefinitely. While the amount and length of maintenance is determined by a formula, a different structure can be negotiated. One spouse may agree to a higher amount of maintenance to be paid over less time, or one spouse may waive maintenance entirely for a larger share of the marital estate. Generally speaking, maintenance, like child support, is fairly straightforward. The standard maintenance equation will drive the discussion, helping to avoid any contention or acrimony. If the parties prefer to bargain or negotiate, the division of the marital estate will be at the center of the negotiations. DINNER DATE

O

ne evening, many Thanksgivings ago, my great Uncle Nick pulled me aside and dispensed one of the most valuable pieces of drunken advice I’ve ever received. Never, he said, eat a sit-down meal anywhere that you can pump gas, rent bowling shoes, or play 18 holes of golf. Smart man, my Uncle Nick. Turned out to be sage advice as I’ve learned that there are few things in life that are less romantic than watching a man hack, slice, and cuss his way through 18 holes of golf—and then watch him drown away his sorrows with a porterhouse and two bottles of red in a country club dining room. Technically speaking, I suppose my Uncle Nick’s cardinal commandment should extend to miniature golf as well. But based on our most recent visit to Puttshack in Oak Brook, my new favorite Vegas-style indoor mini golf experience, I may be willing to carve out an exception. There’s a backstory here: A year ago, after a particularly bruising and wallet-draining afternoon of shopping at Oak Brook, my wife and I decided to do the semi-frugal thing and play a round of mini golf instead of splurging on a sit-down supper. Turned out to be a shrewd choice because Puttshack has eliminated almost everything that makes adult duffers groan about miniature golf. There are no paper score cards. (Your score is tallied digitally). No creepy animatronic clown heads with tongue-shaped drawbridges. (Most of the holes are inspired by barroom games, roulette wheels and pinball machines). And, as an added bonus, if you book a tee time after 8 p.m., Puttshack transforms into a 21 and over affair, which means you can blame that last lackluster putting game on your cocktail rather than your lack of coordination. During our first visit to Puttshack, I did something I swore I’d never do: After a rather “spirited” round of mii golf, I sat down and ordered an “O.G.” cheeseburger. Not sure if it was the buzz I was feeling from my Navy rum-strength Mai Tai or the elation of taking home the

top prize on Puttshack’s Emerald course, but I fell pretty hard for that juicy little burger. Here, I thought to myself, was a burger good enough to inspire a return visit. So, on my most recent trip back to Puttshack, I realized it wasn’t the victory lap talking. The house burger, made from an unctuous blend of ground brisket, chuck and short rib, was just as good the second time around. Puttshack’s OG burger is the least exotic but clearly the most impressive offering on a menu chiefly comprised of street food snacks and late-night munchies from around the world. Chef Kus Folkers probably The O.G. Burger

Wood Fired Thai Octopus

recognizes that 85 precent of the groups who dine at Puttshack are going to order a burger, so she’s built a brilliant one. Suffice to say, it’s worth the 16 bucks. No gimmicks needed. The result is everything you’d want in a burger. It’s a juicy, runny, two-handed delight.

DINNER DATE

Cocktails yes, Virginia, they can whip up a mean Cotton Candy Crush mocktail at Puttshack, but the bubbliest drinks are reserved for mom and dad.

Porn Star Martini:

Slightly scandalous handle? You bet. This one’s a show-off. Vanilla vodka Passion fruit liquor. And a touch of rosé to cut through all that sugar. Drinks like a spiked tropical smoothie and arrives in a cloud of smoke.

Ultimate Top Shelf Margarita:

This is a margarita that brings some serious heat. Mezcal Tequila, Hanson Habanero Vodka. pineapple syrups and juices, cold-pressed lime juice. Not to mention a Jalapeño Hellfire popsicle speared into the center of the drink, which adds extra spice with every passing second.

Most of Folkers’ menu is meant to be eaten with your hands. This isn’t posh and polished gastropub fare. It’s precisely what you’d expect (and would want) from a mini-golf/ sports-bar that hangs framed Pokemon cards on the walls and has built a mini museum out of video game artifacts. Essentially, this is upscale Super Bowl food with a global twist. There are crispy spring rolls stuffed with shredded Italian beef and spicy giardiniera. Lebanese hummus served with a dash of peri-peri sauce. And shiitake mushroom potstickers that you can dunk in a peach dipping sauce. When in doubt, order the grilled chicken skewers, which can be dressed up with creamy cilantro yogurt and coleslaw and piled onto a grilled pita. And some of Puttshack’s seafood offerings are worth a taste. After sampling a crab-spiked

home the crown. Puttshack has its own point system, which rewards the golfer with the highest—nor lowest—score at the end of nine holes. The lower your handicap the higher your base score, but players can earn bonus points by hitting specially designated targets, dropping shots into glowing shortcuts called “super tubes” and avoiding hidden hazards—remember to avoid all flashing red lights — that could reduce your total score. If you’re intrigued by the idea of colorful mini golf experience that manages to incorporate elements of pinball, carnival games and random trivia questions, you’re in for a treat. Suffice to say, during my most recent visit to Puttshack, I did not reclaim my position atop the proverbial leaderboard. I didn’t, however, hit a single slice, sand box, or

Everyone’s a winner at the Puttshack bar.

artichoke dip and nibbling on some Thaispiced wood-fired octopus skewers, we were feeling full enough to hit the links again. Puttshack has devised a rather impressive system. Tiny sensors are implanted in each golf ball, which track the number of targets you hit, the number of strokes you took for each hole and ultimately your final score. In a welcome twist (for me at least), the player who sinks their puts in the fewest number of shots doesn’t necessarily take

triple bogey. And I don’t remember cussing under my breath a single time. I was on my best behavior—and for good reason. Why risk the chance of expulsion, when I knew there was an O.G. burger with my name on it, waiting for me I on the other end of the back nine? efore Diana launched her design firm, she worked for ten years in the mortgage industry. While a different field, the experience provided her with unique experience in working with clients who are seeking to purchase and establish a comfortable home for their families. “I think it was a really good precursor to what I’m doing now since so much of the job is project management,” Wagenbach says. “It was a great learning experience because there were always issues that came up and I had to learn how to resolve them quickly.” While flying solo at the start, Studio W has grown swiftly. Today, Wagenbach heads a dedicated team comprising a senior designer and architect, a junior designer, and a procurement manager responsible for handling purchases. Together, they offer comprehensive services encompassing all facets of home design, from overseeing new construction to meticulously managing renovation projects. Collaborative partnerships with trusted construction firms ensure a seamless execution of their projects. A core value at Studio W is to serve as a trusted resource for clients navigating crucial home decisions. Clients make substantial investments in their homes and further entrust Studio W with crafting their dream living spaces. Wagenbach emphasizes the importance of managing expectations, often debunking the myths perpetuated by home improvement shows. “I often joke that if I ever had a television show, it would be

called ‘HGTV Lied to You.’ These shows can create unrealistic expectations; for instance, the idea that a kitchen can be completely transformed in two months for a mere $20k. The educational aspect of our work is truly critical.” she says. Diana and her team empower their clients to become active participants in the design process, equipping them with the knowledge and understanding necessary to make informed decisions and appreciate the value of their investment. This educational foundation is a cornerstone of Studio W Interiors’ success in delivering not only beautiful but also practical and lasting design solutions. A recently completed project in Hinsdale (see photos) reflects this philosophy. A young family moved from the city, bought a home that was out of date, and hired Studio W to come in and make changes to the house to meet the family’s modern needs. The result was a space that seamlessly combined approachable functionality with stunning aesthetics. “I think we did a really great job of making it more livable,” says Wagenbach. “It was fun to get to work with great clients who trusted my vision and more importantly, the process. We were able to get the renovations done in a short timeframe so that they could move into a whole new beautiful home.” Studio W Interiors is located at 110 S. Washington in Hinsdale, info@ studiowchicago.com. By appointment only.

The Weil Family

The lights, the crowd, even the furniture, the entire patio of The Community House was bathed in pink, Savannah Wood’s favorite color. This vivacious middle schooler who spent 100 nights in Lurie Children’s Hospital receiving treatment for osteosarcoma, rang the bell to mark the end of treatemtn in June. This special August evening was a celebration and thank you. Savannah’s parents, Stacia and Stuart enlisted the help of Susan Cordogan of Big City Events to sprinkle special touches throughout the evening. The joy was infectious as everyone danced, laughed, and remembered that life is about showing up for the people you love.

From start to finish she exceeded expectations and made our selling/purchasing process seamless. She is very well connected, detail-oriented, extremely responsive, and helpful in every way. Anything that came up along the way, she was able to get someone to take care of it, and that took away any stress on our end! Her knowledge of the Hinsdale area, and connections to absolutely everyone from contractors, handyman, designers, etc. made things that much easier every step of the way, even after our purchase. She very much cared that we found our forever home, and that it was perfect for us, and never tried to push anything that didn’t check all of the boxes. Alternatively, with our saleshe brought us multiple offers over ask, and guided us to the best one. I couldn’t recommend her enough!” - SD & ED

PEAK PERFORMANCE

Midwest Performance Cars services a broad array of European cars and SUVs and makes the experience for clients smooth and friendly.

S

WORDS BY MITCH HURST

ometime around 2005, Andy Bizub bought a vintage Porsche 911. Bizub, who spent 30 years in Hinsdale and raised his children there, got his Porsche serviced at Midwest Performance Cars (MPC), a repair and maintenance shop in downtown Chicago, where he worked as a trader. Not one to sit still, when he was getting close to retirement Bizub discovered the shop had some financial challenges due to some missteps by the owner. After chatting with the owner, he put together a deal to purchase the company, and hired the previous owner to manage it. Post-retirement, he was off and running in the foreign car service business. “I always saw an opportunity in this shop where I took my car for service. It seemed like there was a lot of low-hanging fruit where it could have been improved,” Bizub says. “I got to know the owner, started talking to him one day, and found out that the shop was really in trouble.” Bizub amicably parted with the former owner a year later and the business began to grow. He opened a second location in Northbrook in 2018, and this past July, a third location was opened in Westmont. “It’s really been a nice, growing business. We’ve tripled our staff, tripled our locations, and more than tripled our revenue,” he says. “It seemed like a good business opportunity in an interesting industry, but the more I got involved in the business and the more I got involved in the industry in general, I really saw a need to change the customer experience.” Parting with the cash to repair one’s car can feel a bit like a trip to the dentist, people tend not to look forward to it. The MPC business model is about building relationships with clients and providing an

optimum customer experience. “We have good relationships with our clients and, although nobody wants to spend money on their car, they’ll find coming to us is as pleasant of an experience as we can make it, and that’s what we strive for,” Bizub says. While the company services all European brands of vehicles, including classic cars, more than half of its business is suburban and Chicago moms and dads who drive European SUVs, including Mercedes Benz, Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, and Porsche. There are many reasons MPC customers keep coming back. “We offer a three-year, 100,000-mile warranty on all of our work, which is triple the industry standard,“ Bizub says. “All of our people are really passionate about what we do. Several of our employees drive Porsches and they almost all drive German cars. That makes it easy for them to understand customer needs.” Perhaps the best reason that clients come to MPC for their car service as opposed to a dealer is that MPC staff focuses solely on keeping their current car on the road. For people with older cars or cars that require more significant repairs, there’s the temptation from a dealer to trade up. But with proper maintenance, these cars should stay on the road for 200,000 or 250,000 miles. “We are going to make your service experience and taking care of your vehicle frictionless and as painless as possible,” Bizub says. “We want you to enjoy your car and not worry when you bring it in for maintenance.” Midwest Performance Cars is located at 410 East Ogden Street in Westmont, 630-570-0204, midwestperformancecars.com.

A TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE For 50 years, LaMantia Design & Remodeling has been committed to providing unparalleled customer satisfaction in home improvement through exceptional design and outstanding workmanship.

F

Mike Gacek and Andy LaMantia in the showroom.

ounder Tony LaMantia discovered his passion as a high school student when he took a job with a local construction company. He became known for his tireless work ethic and love for the business, and after 17 years, ventured out on his own to create LaMantia Design & Remodeling in 1973. It wasn’t long before it evolved into a true family-owned company, with his son, Andy LaMantia, and son-in-law, Mike Gacek, joining him. The company flourished, and the family business found itself needing a larger showroom. In 2017, they got just that, when they moved to their current location at 20 East Ogden in Hinsdale. The 6,000 square foot showroom is their pride and joy, an enhanced platform from which to inspire customers with stunning kitchen, bathroom, bar, and library room displays. There is even a working kitchen, which is used for company parties and fundraiser events. Sadly, Tony passed in 2021, but Andy and Mike have continued to run the business. While LaMantia has adapted and transformed over the years to remain a leader in the industry, they steadfastly uphold the same values of excellence that the company was built upon. As a result,

generations of customer families have come back to LaMantia for projects—a true testament to the solid foundation Tony built. LaMantia’s design/build process begins with knowing and understanding their client before starting a renovation project. They make it their priority to understand the client’s goals, wish list items, and any challenges with a client’s current space. They will also help identify any problem areas that need addressing. As the process moves forward, LaMantia takes a holistic team approach, which sets them apart from other remodeling companies. They integrate design, material selection, and construction to ensure every home remodeling project is executed smoothly. This wouldn’t be possible without their wonderful team of award-winning professional designers, architects, and tradespeople who use their talents to create truly unique, custom-made spaces. Choose LaMantia Design & Remodeling for a transformative experience that combines expertise, creativity, and unmatched customer service; it’s what they like to call The LaMantia experience.
