INSIDE INTERNATIONAL FAMILY LAW Jay Dahlin is one of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP’s best not-so-secret weapons. ay Dahlin’s family law portfolio is anything but ordinary, with his practice focused on international cases, domestic family law cases, and cases where he acts as Guardian ad Litem to children—court-appointed counsel on behalf of the child(ren) in a case—Dahlin has built up a career heavily focused in child custody and advocacy work. Dahlin made the pivot from international business law, where he gained experience working in federal courts, to family law after growing somewhat disillusioned with corporate litigation. “I wanted to represent people, not corporations,” says Dahlin. Soon after joining the ranks of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP, Dahlin took on an emergency international child abduction case. After he helped facilitate the child’s safe return from Chicago back to overseas, he realized he’d discovered his passion for international family law. In international cases, Dahlin must operate within two separate and sometimes vastly different legal systems. Ideally, cases proceed under the Hague Convention of International Child Abduction— a treaty that the majority of countries around the world have signed and agreed to, where the courts of the two nations involved will coordinate to determine which country has jurisdiction and where the outcomes of the case will be enforceable. But when dealing with a country who has not signed on to this agreement, Dahlin must navigate within both the U.S. legal system and an alternate overseas legal system where there may not necessarily be the same due process we’re accustomed to in the U.S. Part of Dahlin’s secret to his success is the artistic lens through which he can view the courtroom. A student of theater in his undergraduate years, Dahlin immediately saw a veiled connection to performing on stage and arguing a case in court. While actors are given scripts to follow and lines to read, “as an attorney, you’re building your own script,” Dahlin says. Similarly, as

an actor strives to convince his audience of the character he’s portraying, Dahlin must also present his case and persuade the judge that his client’s narrative and interests are worth ruling in favor of. Dahlin’s philosophy centers on pragmatism and setting achievable goals in the case as efficiently as possible. “I counsel my clients to be rationally pragmatic,” says Dahlin. “I want to take the most direct and efficient path to get you where you want to go.” Dahlin also recognizes that it’s his responsibility to help his clients understand what the court can and cannot do, particularly in international cases. His even-keeled personality and ability to adapt with changing fact patterns has helped Dahlin both to persevere through difficult cases and maintain a rational perspective throughout. Dahlin’s pragmatic and goal-centered approach always keeps his clients’ best interests at heart, and he always strives to leave his clients a little better off than when they first met. based MKP brand three years ago—bringing statement pieces, outerwear, and accessories to the Western Suburbs where she saw a void in the market. “I have been passionate about fashion my entire life, so I was frustrated not being able to complete my looks with what I consider to be the wow factors,” she explains. In early 2019 she began the design and sourcing process for her business which manufactures pieces around the globe based on the region’s specialty. “My first piece was the Katerina coat which was an oversized denim coat that had detachable fox fur on the hood and the cuffs. It continues to be one of my best-selling coats. I then focused on cropped, fitted, and oversized leather jackets in bold colors, so people have options. Finally, my teddy coats and vests have been a big success.” While you can find her pieces in stores, Patrinos tends to focus predominantly on trunk shows where women can get together, have some cocktails, network, and shop. When she isn’t designing her latest custom piece, Patrinos enjoys spending time with her husband Jason, and her children Teddy and Zea, traveling, and supporting the Children’s Service Board at Lurie Children’s Hospital. olores Onetto has grown up in the world of professional polo. Her Argentinian grandfather Horacio Onetto bred horses in his native country and then sold them globally to other polo players or rode them in matches himself. He was a 6-goal professional who played at nearby Oak Brook Polo Club throughout the 1980s. His son Horacio Jr.—Dolores’s father, a 6-goal professional himself—followed suit. Early in Horacio Jr.’s marriage to his wife Hollis, they decided family they would travel the polo season circuit together as a family. With a farm as their home base in Aiken, South Carolina, today—Horacio Jr. competes in Palm Beach, Florida in the winter, Oak Brook in the summer, and Aiken in the fall. The life of a professional polo-playing family is the only one 19-year-old Dolores, and her 16-year-old sister Inez, have ever known. “It’s been an exciting way to grow up, even though it’s pretty different from other kids my age,” says Dolores, a rising college sophomore, whose schooling has been done almost entirely online. “But it’s easy to make friends with other families who are part of the polo world the way we are.” Most people assume that Dolores started playing polo as a child because of who her family is. “Polo is very different in the United States. Players begin their careers at a much younger age and polo is faster and quicker in Argentina because of this. I was born in Florida and when I was little, I started down a gymnastics path,” Dolores says, whose fit frame is evidence of the years she spent training in one of South Carolina’s top-ranked gymnastics gyms. “Our coaches were really strict with how much time we spent with the horses— so we couldn’t ride as much as I wanted to.” But two years ago, realizing how hard gymnastics was on her body, Dolores decided to retire and channel her competitive energy into polo. “I wanted to keep myself active,” she says. “I have always loved horses. I love caring for them and there’s such an adrenaline rush to be on a horse. You just fall more in love with them every time you ride.” Even though she in the beginning of her career as a polo player, Dolores is already making quite a name for herself as a competitor. In addition to competing at the U.S. Open Women’s Polo Championship® in Hawaii this spring, her

father asked her to join his team. “It was really an honor when my father invited me to be part of his team,” she explains. “He has been playing all of his life and for him to ask me when I’m so new in my career as a player—it really meant so much.” Dolores has been incredibly busy since arriving in Chicago in June for the summer season. Living and working on a horse farm in Oswego, Illinois—she’s competed in polo matches when the weather complies on the weekends in Oak Brook. “My days usually begin with my sister and I taking the horses out, riding them, and then feeding and brushing them,” she says of the nearly 40 horses they care for. “If there is time left in the day, I train or participate in a match. It’s nice to be in season and get to play as much as I do—and to be able to play with my family is everything.” The Onettos are not unique in making polo a family affair—the Obregon and Guitierrez families are regulars on polo fields all over the world, including Oak Brook. Local fans are thrilled that Oak Brook Polo is alive and well again in 2021. Founded in 1922 by legendary businessman, Paul Butler, the Oak Brook Polo Club is an American Polo treasure and one of the oldest polo clubs in the United States. It was once the sport’s epicenter for elite professional polo in the United States and served as home to the U.S. Open Polo Championship nearly two decades and other prestigious international and national polo tournaments. For decades, Oak Brook Polo Club has been a popular Sunday tradition and social scene known for entertaining Hollywood celebrities, dignitaries, royalty, and Chicago’s distinguished. Today, the Oak Brook Polo Club plays on the Prince of Wales Field, which is adjacent to the Butler National Golf Course and The Drake Hotel in beautiful Oak Brook. The club hosts a number of Sunday polo matches and continues to attract thousands of fascinated spectators who marvel at the athleticism and majesty of this timeless sport. Although her summer schedule leaves little time to relax, Dolores doesn’t seem to mind. “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” she says. “I look forward to seeing where this all goes.”

ince 1959, the Rotary Club of Hinsdale has been a keystone of the community and the Rotary Run Charity Classic is the organization’s main event. This community of serviceminded individuals with diversified backgrounds commits to a wide range of causes on local, national, and even worldwide levels. From supporting local youth programs to assisting the impoverished, Rotary Club of Hinsdale has made an impact proving their motto, “service above self.” On October 3, mark your calendars, get set, and go to the Rotary Run Charity Classic. The Rotary Club of Hinsdale’s annual event has been running strong for 27 years and the entire family can join—even down to man’s best friend. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., each participant is invited to walk or run their way towards a good cause in 3K, 5K, or 10K races. Parents with strollerbound babies can enter in the Walk and Roll, and four-legged friends and their owners can hold on to their leashes in The Mutt Strut. This year the club has inducted the superintendent of District 181 as the grand marshal of the run. Dr. Hector Garcia has been a dedicated Rotarian for three years and has been an outstanding pillar of the community. During his time with the club, he has participated in various community services and built a strong partnership between the Rotary Club of Hinsdale and District 181. In 2019, he led District 181 and the Rotary with a drive to donate school supplies to students affected by the hurricanes in North Carolina. In 2020, District 181 partnered with the Rotary to collect clothing and supplies for local families in need through Cradles to Crayons. And in the summer of 2020, District 181, in tandem with the Rotary, volunteered to deliver meals to families locally who were impacted by COVID-19. “The Rotary makes a deep impact in our community and has a long tradition of lifting up important institutions in

the Hinsdale area including District 181 schools and the District 181 Foundation,” says Dr. Garcia. “Participating in the Rotary Run Charity Classic directly supports our students, schools, and families, and we hope to see our community members show their support at this year’s race.” Dr. Garcia finds it most rewarding to come out and see students participating with their friends and families. “I’m genuinely excited about seeing the community come together for such a special event and one that benefits countless organizations and people in the community and around the world,” he says. “This has been an extraordinarily difficult time that has been filled with divisive issues and isolation.” However, with the Rotary Run Charity Classic, Dr. Garcia hopes it serves as a reminder of the principles that bring us together, the joy of seeing the community as one, and most importantly, having a fun day with family and friends. Dr. Ingrid Raiser, president of the Rotary Club of Hinsdale, says the club decided to extend the grand marshal honor to Dr. Garcia based on his outstanding community service and dedicated efforts to make District 181 one of the best school districts in Illinois. “Rotary is about connecting, networking, friendship, and service,” says Dr. Raiser. “We support our schools, hospital, library, The Community House, the Hanson Center, food pantry, and provide need-based scholarships and participate in community programs.” Rotary International is the world’s oldest service organization founded in 1905. With 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas, they pull their efforts together to fulfill Rotary’s goal of doing good in the world. The Rotary Club of Hinsdale meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. at The Community House with lunch, a speaker, and a fellowship.

t feels a little surreal, doesn’t it? Venturing out again and eating inside an actual restaurant. One with four walls and an actual roof, rather than huddling beneath a giant cantilevered umbrella or inside one of those hermetically sealed Biosphereinspired plastic igloos that became all the rage last year. This return to the good “old” days is liberating. But at times can feel like re-entering the dating scene after an 18-month stay at an ashram. You know what to do—and what you want—but knowing where to start can be a little tricky. Should one wade in slowly, returning to someplace comforting and familiar? A spot where you can reflect on what’s been lost and gained over the last year? Or cannonball things right out of the gate by splurging somewhere you can be Bacchus for an evening—gorging, feasting, and devouring treats you could never whip up at home?

My suggestion: Don’t settle. Go visit the new Vistro Prime in Hinsdale and do both. In some ways, it’s just as you remember it. Same look and homey vibe. The bar still enjoys making customized “dealer’s choice” mocktails for the kids, not to mention the best soft serve in town, now with an option for a bananas foster add-on. Plus they’ve kept all that cream-colored wainscoting, which my wife and I dream about sheathing our living room in every time we go. Only the menu has been re-concepted. A little less Midwestern-inspire bistro. A little more Martha’s Vineyard-inspired steakhouse. Think Maine mussels, day boat scallops and seafood towers, plus dry-aged steaks and chops. The other half of the menu reads like a playlist of Chef Paul Virant’s greatest hits, both nostalgic and reliably delicious. I love Virant’s snacks. Always have. I contend his brown-butter kale— drizzled with a semi-sweet lemonadevinegar dressing and fried to a frilly

In seniors it can debilitate a patient and create other medical problems, complicating the situation and creating worsening prognosis and outcomes. The condition often leads to complications beyond your physical symptoms, such as new or worsened depression, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. According to the CDC, almost 40 million Americans over the age of 65 are affected by some version of chronic pain. Females are affected more than males. It’s the most common reason someone seeks out medical attention. Mobility, depression, and insomnia are three common problems that occur in chronic pain patients. Often in seniors we care for, chronic pain causes a lack of mobility creating issues such as high fall risk and muscle weakness from disuse. For these problems physical therapy and occupational therapy are important to implement early on, to prevent issues like hip fractures and irreversible weakness. Depression is another frequent issue that occurs with chronic pain. When there is no hope for improvement and a reduction in someone’s independent abilities, it frequently causes a depressed mood. Fortunately, there are many anti-depressant medications and sometimes these medications can also help with masking the pain. Side effects can include drowsiness, small amount of weight gain, and reduced libido.
