Editor’s Note

HIGH SUMMER has arrived. The glorious stretches of sunshine and blue skies that come with it feel like a long-awaited gift, worthy of celebrating. And in an era where gathering in small groups is a must, there is no better time to casually entertain at home. In this month’s Entertaining piece, Summer Gathering, we revel in the casual outdoor lunch, bringing you simple yet indulgent summer recipes served outdoors. Many of the elements found on our table can be found on the Lifestyle List, allowing you to recreate the scene. But truth be told, the only requisites are great friends, simple food, and a table set under the shade of a tree.

July’s In the Garden is penned by celebrated Lake Forest landscape architect Craig Bergmann. Bergmann offers advice on creating a Midwestern garden that melds beauty and bounty, and his accompanying images depict just a few of the gorgeous and functional local gardens he has crafted. No doubt they serve as backdrop for both leisurely lunches with friends and quietly unwinding with a great book.

If you are looking for a fantastic read to unwind with, best-selling Lake Forest author Katherine Reay has just published her seventh novel, Of Literature & Lattes. In our feature, “Beauty and the Books,” Reay discusses this new work and shares her writing process, inspiration, and best advice for aspiring novelists. Reay’s fans will thrill over the reappearance of characters from past novels in Of Literature & Lattes, but all readers will enjoy the journey of two friends working their way through complicated lives and learning to embrace change.

Sometimes change is desperately needed. Inspired Design tells the story of a Lake Forest family winning a Today show contest decades ago, landing them on one of the first-ever reality television

shows, This Old House . Over a six-episode arc, Heidi Archibald and her family had their cramped and outdated kitchen made over, and in the process, Archibald discovered a new career.

This month’s cover story brings us Laura Calvert, Elawa Farm Foundation’s new executive director. Writer Ann Marie Scheidler shares Calvert’s journey from growing up in a small farming community to her new position at Elawa, and we learn what the future holds for this beloved former gentleman’s farm under her directorship. There is no place in our community that represents the bounty of this season more than Elawa Farm. I encourage you to visit this magical place, where you will discover the gardens that provide our community with heirloom produce and must-have wildflower bouquets. You will also find historically significant architecture—designed by David Adler and Alfred Hopkins, and built in 1917 for A. Watson Armour, a member of one of Chicago’s oldest and most distinguished families.

Thank you for taking the time to read our pages. I wish you a happy and healthy month of July.

Infant Welfare Showhouse will open its doors to the public on Monday, July 13th. The Showhouse & Gardens is a biennial event and is recognized as one of the top showhouses in the country. More than 30 interior designers have taken on rooms in the historic Lake Forest home designed in 1906 by Frost and Granger and renovated by Stanley Anderson in the 1920s. Private guided tours of up to 8 people will occur from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in 30-minute intervals. The showhouse will be open 7 days a week, from Monday, July 13 to Sunday, August 9.

Award-winning interior designer, tastemaker, design blogger, and Honorary Event Chair Paloma Contreras will create a virtual presentation, “Embracing Your Signature Style.” Tickets to visit the showhouse in person as well as a link to view Paloma’s virtual presentation will be for sale, and guests will have the option to purchase a personalized

book, Dream, Design, Live from Contreras’s shop. “I’ve long been very aware of how special Lake Forest is,” she says. “Lake Forest is a city with a true reverence for its architectural past.”

Event co-chairs, Chrissy Davis, Jen Horan, Sarah Georgi, and Jennifer Mower are grateful to all of the interior designers and landscape architects as well as the talented individuals working for them who have been dedicated, supportive, and positive through this extremely challenging time.

Proceeds from the showhouse benefit the Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, which is celebrating more than 108 years of providing healthcare to Chicago’s medically underserved. To purchase tickets, make a donation, or for more information, visit lakeforestshowhouse.com.

WALK THE BLUFF

THE LAKE BLUFF History Museum and Lake Bluff 125 Committee has launched the Lake Bluff Walking Tours app for smart phones and tablets. Produced by Museum Board Members Steve Kraus and Mark Dewart, and local resident Dan Huston, it includes many period photographs and offers a modern, digital expansion of the Lake Bluff History Museum’s popular docent-led tours. This new app also provides digital tours of the village’s most iconic and historically significant buildings and neighborhoods. It was created to honor and celebrate the 125th anniversary of Lake Bluff’s incorporation as a village, which took place in September 1895.

The first iteration of the app includes two tours narrated by Lake Bluff voice-over talents Lise Dominique and Walt Sloan. The first covers the Uptown Commercial

District, the center of commercial activity in the Village from the 1880s to the 2020s. This tour takes walkers through the Scranton Avenue business community and nearby neighborhoods, and includes the area designated a National Register Historic District. The second tour guides users through the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Grounds. From 1875 to 1900, the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association sponsored summer religious and social events on their grounds in east Lake Bluff, and the tour takes walkers through the neighborhoods established during this era.

The Lake Bluff Walking Tours app (logo by Hillary Spencer for the Lake Bluff History Museum) is sponsored by Abbott, with content and production by the Lake Bluff History Museum. It can be downloaded at no cost from the Apple App Store and Google Play. For more information, visit lakebluffhistory.org.

AWARD-WINNING cheese manufacturer Nat Caputo has spent his life devoted to the Italian food importing business his parents founded more than 40 years ago. Here he shares the story behind the business and what is currently on his island.

Caputo Cheese has grown to 140 employees with six facilities in Melrose Park, manufacturing 80,000 pounds of fresh mozzarella per week and 100,000 to 150,000 pounds of Parmesan, Romano, and Asiago per day. We are award winners for many of our fresh mozzarella products including our burrata, which won both the World and U.S. Championship Cheese Contests back-to-back for three years running now. Our customer base

is made up of food manufacturers, restaurant chains, and food distributors that range from large to small—from national chains like Panera Bread to smaller specialty operations like Lake Forest’s Amidei Mercantino. My parents started the business as an Italian food-importing business in 1978, eventually focusing solely on cheese. I started in the business early in my life, on the cash register at 10-years-old, cutting and wrapping cheese at 12, and in the deli at 16. I was making deliveries on a truck at 18, then working through my college years at Loyola University, doing the full job rotation as our company grew. Production line, line supervisor, operations, logistics, purchasing, sales … then into the lead role two years out of college in 1996. Many people know my sister Trina as well, as she worked in the Lake Forest store while I ran the cheese manufacturing in Melrose.

Things on my island right now:

• Paycheck Protection Plan application and documents

• Packaging samples for our new Elevated Cow product line, a fresh mozzarella infused with CBD

• My Motorola radio, which connects to my team of 30 supervisors

• Pea protein and fava bean protein as we are now manufacturing vegan and vegetarian cheeses

• A sta ck of industry newspapers, such as The Cheese Reporter, The Cheese Market News , Restaurant News and Culture Magazine

UNLEASHED IN LAKE BLUFF

MORE THAN 70 delightful canine works of art take to the streets of Lake Bluff starting in mid-July as part of the Village’s first-of-its-kind Dogs on the Bluff public art display. These masterpieces were created to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Lake Bluff incorporating as a village in 1895. The display includes imaginatively painted fiberglass dogs, puppies, and fire hydrants. Some were created by sponsored artists while others were painted by individuals and members of local organizations.

Dogs on the Bluff co-chair Jennifer Leventhal enthuses, “The talent represented in this display is un-

believable! We look forward to sharing them with the community when we ‘unleash’ the dogs throughout the downtown area, on Park District grounds, and near several sponsor’s businesses in the commercial and industrial park.” A tour highlighting the dogs’ locations, sponsors, and artist information will be added to the Lake Bluff Walking Tours app when the dogs go on display.

Many of the dogs have a story related to their theme, creative process, or the artist’s personal inspiration. For example, Lake Bluff Women’s Club’s pup, Bluffie, reflects the organization’s purpose and accomplishments, such as books representing the club’s role establishing Lake Bluff Public Library and service dog vests representing one of its current missions.

The Lake Bluff History Museum’s dog is aptly named Tales, reflecting the museum’s mission to share the history of Lake Bluff through narrative stories and programs such as the Ghost Walk and Distilling History events. “During the research phase I learned so much about Lake Bluff that I did not know before,” says Paulette Colo, the artist who painted Tales “There are buildings in Lake Bluff that have long since been demolished or burned down, but you can

almost still see them lining today’s streets.”

The Lake Bluff Garden Club’s colorfully painted dog is called Blossom because … flowers. It was created by Pamela and Cameron Yager. The Silo restaurant sponsored two dogs, Silo, the mama dog and her puppy, Penny. These were painted by the restaurant’s daytime host, Linda Fiegen. Artist Laura Caroline Breakstone painted flowers and trees native to Illinois on her dog, creatively titled Dogwood. The Gore, Hirsh, and Valassis families recruited six cousins, ages 1 through 12, to create their canine work of art during the shelter-in-place period. The dog is called Lucky to Live in Lake Bluff, and it is covered in “heads-up” pennies that were carefully cleaned and shined before being placed on the dog.

Artist, musician, and photographer Chuck Ignarski Jr. shares that he named his dog art “Johnny Cash,

simply because JC oozes coolness.” The dog is modeled after Ignarski’s reallife dog, who also goes by that name. “Although I’ve worked on many projects prior to this one, this was the most ambitious to date. Being a musician, I wanted to do something that incorporated that theme. It had to be recognizable but cool, while also having a positive and fun message,” he says. Ignarski, who retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of honorable and distinguished service, also wants his dog art to convey optimism. “My true hope is that during these trying times that everyone is facing, the overall positive feelings of music and happiness will translate to all of the people who visit the display throughout the summer and fall.”

More stories on the artwork, artists, and creative processes will be included in the digital Dogs on the Bluff Walking Tour, which will be added to the Lake Bluff Walking Tours app in July. The Lake Bluff Walking Tours app may be downloaded for free at the Apple App Store and Google Play. For information on Dogs on the Bluff public art display, visit lakebluff125.org. A MONTHLY CELEBRATION OF SEASONAL BLOOMS

words and photography by Wendy Franzen

VIBRANT AND SHOWY mophead hydrangeas shine in arrangements from rustic to the most formal. Here we see their giant, variegated blossoms layered with complementary delphinium spikes echoing the adjacent painting’s abstract splatter. Punctuated by green viburnum pom poms and anchored in a substantial cast-iron vessel, this high-summer composition is a study in the crisp, cool end of the ROYGBIV spectrum.

LIVING IN THE MIDWESTERN GARDEN HOUSE &
Mixed prairie perennials and herbs in autumn

ISN’T IT FUNNY? Today, what we think of a garden in the suburbs is vastly different from what folks think of a garden in more rural parts of the Midwest. The idea of gardening for sustenance has always been one of the virtues of Midwestern gardening. Typically, here in the suburbs, gardening seems to be driven by looks. How beautiful the garden will be acts as the guiding style principle and therefore dictates the ingredients.

Harkening back from many of our ancestor’s European roots, aesthetic gardening was for the wealthy and “real” gardening was for putting food on one’s table. As a garden-maker for others and for myself, I strive to

IN THE GARDEN

combine “then and now” into the history of an All-American garden, here in the breadbasket of our great country. Why can’t it be beautiful and deliver on all fronts? It can and, to me, a garden should.

Craig Bergmann Landscape Design has won critical acclaim for intertwining design, horticulture, and architecture in a way that is unique to Northern Illinois. The firm is known for its award-winning attention to detail, establishing a true dialogue between the living garden and the architectural site. Today, CBLD is headquartered in the historic David Adler-designed A. Watson Armour Estate in Lake Forest, and also operates a 25-acre nursery located in Wadsworth.

SUMMER GATHERING

The laid-back allure of lunch in the garden

photography by Monica Kass Rogers

recipes by Elizabeth Brown cocktail recipe by Deer Path Inn

GATHERING WITH FRIENDS on a lazy summer afternoon is one of life’s great pleasures. A table placed under the shade of a tree, layered with deliciously simple food that speaks to the season, encourages lingering of the best kind. Setting this table with high summer’s bounty—cherry tomatoes here, potted herbs there—creates a visual connection to the surroundings and the meal being served.

The recipes here can easily be prepared a day ahead of time, allowing the host to truly relax.

Creating an adjacent space to keep pitchers of lemonade, light cocktail fixings, and ice at the ready will minimize dashes to the kitchen and add to the easygoing atmosphere. And when the afternoon winds to its eventual close, guests will leave happy and sated from great conversation, an indulgent lunch, and the casual, gracious hospitality.

WHITE GAZPACHO WITH CRAB-BASIL SALAD

Makes about 12 cups

• 4 cups chicken stock, chilled

• 2 cups sour cream

• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 1 teaspoon Tabasco

• 1 tablespoon kosher salt

• ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 8 ounces yellow tomato, small dice

• 8 ounces red tomato, small dice

• 6 ounces orange bell pepper, small dice

• 12 ounces English cucumber, small dice

• 6 ounces peeled jicama, small dice

• 2 ripe but firm avocadoes, small dice

• Kernels from 2 ears sweet corn, cooked, cooled and cut off the cobb

• 3 scallions, thinly sliced

• ¼ cup chopped cilantro

• ¼ cup chopped basil

• ¼ cup roasted and salted sunflower kernels

• Crab-Basil Salad (recipe follows)

Whisk together chicken stock, sour cream, vinegar, Tabasco, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until smooth. MAGIC MUFFALETTA

words and recipe by Elizabeth Brown

Serves many

THIS IS A FUN SANDWICH to pull out at a picnic—it looks simply like a giant loaf of bread—hungry picnic guests start acting nervous. Then you slice into it and reveal a stunning rainbow of tantalizing meats, veggies, and cheeses—a hearty summertime feast for all. It is also best if made early in the day, wrapped tightly, and given some time to rest in the refrigerator before bringing to room temperature and slicing into wedges. This recipe is also very forgiving—depending upon the size of your boule (round rustic loaf), you may need more or less of each ingredient. Feel free to add things from your refrigerator: leftover grilled chicken, corn kernels, grilled eggplant—your imagination is the limit.

HOUSE & GARDEN 42 FOREST & BLUFF
ENTERTAINING

• 1 medium zucchini, very thinly sliced lengthwise on a mandolin or with a vegetable peeler into ribbons

• 1 large carrot, very thinly sliced lengthwise on a mandolin or with a vegetable peeler into ribbons

• 1 large round loaf country style or rustic bread (2 pounds)

• Juice of 1/2 lemon

• 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 1/2 cups store-bought jarred muffaletta salad mix, drained of oil, divided

• 4 ounces prosciutto, thinly sliced

• 1 red bell pepper, roasted, peeled, and thinly sliced

• 1 yellow bell pepper, roasted, peeled and thinly sliced

• 4 ounces smoked turkey, thinly sliced

• 8 ounces f resh mozzarella, sliced 1/3-inch thick

• 1 large ripe beefsteak tomato, thinly sliced

• 12 large basil leaves

• 4 ounces salami, thinly sliced

• 6 ounces crumbled fresh goat cheese

• 1/2 small red onion, peeled and minced

• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 2 cups arugula leaves

Combine zucchini and carrot ribbons in a medium bowl and squeeze juice of half a lemon over top. Drizzle in one tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Reserve.

Slice the loaf of bread in half across the belly. Pull out the soft interior bread from inside of each half, leaving a one-inch border all around to create a cavity in which you’ll build the sandwich.

Scatter 3/4 cup of muffaletta salad mix evenly over cavity in the bottom piece of bread. Drizzle with one tablespoon olive oil. Layer prosciutto over the mix to cover bottom of the bread completely. Next, layer red and yellow peppers, followed by sliced turkey. Now layer on mozzarella slices. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, arrange the tomato slices on top and season again. Sprinkle basil leaves atop tomato slices. Layer on the salami. Gently squeeze liquid from reserved zucchini and carrot curls, then spread over salami. Sprinkle goat cheese crumbles and minced red onion over all, drizzle with one tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, and top with arugula leaves.

In top piece of bread, scatter remaining muffaletta salad mix and drizzle with last tablespoon olive oil. Working quickly, cap the top piece of bread onto the sandwich base, using your hands to compress the whole thing so the top and bottom pieces of bread come together. Wrap very tightly in a few layers of plastic wrap. Allow to rest at room temperature before slicing into wedges, or refrigerate for up to 24 hours. This sandwich gets better the longer it rests.

PASSION AND INTENSITY

“The moments before kickoff, it feels like stage fright or butterflies. The game itself is so competitive, and everyone’s on edge, and then when we score or make a big play … it’s indescribable,” says recent Lake Forest High School (LFHS) graduate, Bridget Mitchell. Her passion for the game of soccer is palpable on the field, and when she talks about it, one feels the electricity in her words. It is Mitchell’s speed and extraordinary skills, however, that have caught the eyes of recruiters since she was an 8th grade student at Deer Path Middle School.

SUCCESS AND HARDSHIP

Mitchell is the definition of a well-rounded person. Academically driven and athletically gifted with a natural inclination for leadership, she brings people together with ease. It is easy to observe her successes and assume she is practically perfect by nature, but that is not true. The soon to be Northwestern Wildcat has faced challenges that, for many, would be daunting. And she’s done so with both grit and grace.

Devastating ACL tears prevented Mitchell from competing two of her four high school years, threatening her career before it could take flight. Rather than spiraling into self-pity while nursing her injuries, she chose to become team manager for the LFHS Varsity soccer team, fulfilling this role during her injuryladen freshman and senior years. It was an immense responsibility, but Mitchell thrived through the work

and was able to support her friends. She has always placed team above self. “The team aspect is the best aspect of soccer,” she states. “Competing together and pushing each other to be better … my favorite moments are those when you know that you and your teammates have worked so hard and collectively it pays off.”

THE PATH TO MARTIN STADIUM

Mitchell started playing soccer when she was 4-years-old, progressing from recreational league AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) to LFSA (Lake Forest Soccer Association). “I was a swimmer and a soccer player, and competed in both sports until 8th grade. At that point, I quit swimming because I had to focus on soccer and only soccer. I knew that’s what it would take to play in a competitive college league like the Big Ten,” she says. Her decision paid off: Northwestern started looking at Mitchell during her 8th grade year. Sophomore year she upped the in-

THE SPORTING LIFE

tensity and began to play for the prestigious FC United Soccer Club. And finally, in a plot twist her senior year, Mitchell pivoted to play for rival club, Eclipse.

But back to Northwestern. Mitchell began communicating with the soccer department personally during her freshman year at LFHS. After her first ACL tear in December of that year, she was able to fully recover and the Big Ten school continued to show interest. By sophomore year, Mitchell verbally committed to play, accepting their scholarship offer. Senior year then brought a wild ride of lows and highs. The second of her ACL tears occurred in November, necessitating surgery. Despite the injury, six days post-surgery, she signed a letter of intent while hobbling on crutches and wearing a giant knee brace. She was officially a Wildcat.

The future is bright for Mitchell. Wise beyond her years, she looks forward to stepping onto the lakeside field in Northwestern’s Martin Stadium this summer. Looking both backward and forward, she notes, “When it feels like serendipity or stars aligning on the field, you know in actuality it’s the result of years of hard work and team building.”

REAL MEN

MENTAL HEALTH AMERICA reports that 6 million men are affected by depression in the United States every year, and yet men are far less likely to seek mental health treatment than women due to social norms, reluctance to talk, and downplaying of symptoms.

An exception to this statistic is beloved Chicago Cubs National Anthem singer and anti-bullying activist John Vincent. “My whole life people have told me ‘John, you’re too honest. You tell people too much,’” Vincent says. “But I say, why wouldn’t I be honest? I relate to people and if I can help them by telling my story, why wouldn’t I?”

Having suffered from depression for more than 25 years, at age 47 he’s experiencing life in the present beyond his depression and says, “I’ve never felt better.” He owes much of his evolution to intravenous ketamine treatments from IV Solution Ketamine Centers of Chicago, which made him “feel alive again” after only two days.

Famous for performing the anthem before Chicago Cubs games since 2003, Vincent’s ability to hold a note for an inconceivable amount of time has blown many fans away. While outwardly jovial and confident, he’s struggled with OCD, depression, and anxiety throughout his career. After a suicide attempt in 2018, Vincent confided in his psychiatrist and together they decided he should try ketamine because, he says, “What did I have to lose at that point?” He connected with me, as Chief Medical Officer of IV Solutions & Ketamine Centers of Chicago, and began his first treatment protocol in March 2019.

“Before ketamine, I felt like I was standing in front of a wall,” says Vincent. “What ketamine has done is brought me a ladder to get me over that wall. It’s changed my entire life.”

Now, Vincent does whatever he can to tell others about his struggles and what’s worked for him. He serves as an advocate for others suffering to speak their truth and seek help when and where they can.

“John was a different person after his first ketamine treatment and we are grateful for his willingness to share his experience with others,” says Dr. Nandra. “We want everyone suffering from treatmentresistant depression to experience the life changing effects of it, just as John has.”

As a child, Vincent was bullied for being smaller than everyone else. He experienced a growth spurt that left him less of a target, however, as he grew older he went from being a scared child to an

angry adult. He soon found anger was getting him nowhere so he opened his heart and began speaking up about his mental health struggles. He now reaches thousands of middle and high school students around Chicagoland through his anti-bullying platform and appears at schools for free. With the COVID19 epidemic closing schools, he’s maintained connections virtually and also sings outside residential living facilities every Wednesday.

Prior to his regular ketamine infusion protocol, Vincent says he was always looking for answers to everything. As we’re all learning, now more than ever, that is not possible! He credits ketamine for shutting this “manic” part of his brain down for him to think slower, more clearly, and more controlled. “Ketamine is a connector and has helped restructure my brain. These types of treatments are so important during uncertain times.”

“Of course I still get sad, that’s normal, especially now,” says Vincent. “But the difference is, I know I can overcome sadness and live through it. I’m on a lifelong journey seeking peace and I’m grateful for ketamine for allowing me to do this.”

IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers is located at 300 Village Green Road, Suite 225 in Lincolnshire and at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. Laura Calvert relaxes outside of her office at Elawa Farm

HEN LAURA CALVERT was growing up in a small farm community in Central Illinois, she never imagined she would have a career in agriculture. “I literally had a cornfield in my backyard,” Calvert says. “But sometimes it takes moving away to realize what you are called to do.”

Lake Forest’s Elawa Farm Foundation announced in January that Calvert was their new executive director. She succeeded Joanne Miller who had been with Elawa since 2008. She comes to Elawa Farm Foundation from Advocates for Urban Agriculture (AUA), where she served as executive director for three years. There, she led the organization through significant growth and innovative program development during her tenure. Before AUA, Calvert worked for the Chicago Botanic Garden for eight years. There, she managed business operations for Windy City Harvest, the Garden’s urban agricultural workforce development program. She oversaw the business development of more than 13 urban farms and trained hundreds of youth and adult participants.

Calvert appreciates that she’s joining Elawa at an unusual time in history.

“We were just starting to unfold some plans for spring when everything closed down because of the pandemic,” she shares. “But at the end of the day, what we do at Elawa deemed us as essential. We have such a great team here that is so adaptable, we’ve been able to keep moving forward. It’s been incredibly grounding to be at Elawa now, to be able to get my hands in the dirt, and to know that we’re making a difference.”

In quiet moments, not that there are many these days, Calvert wonders how the pandemic will shape the community’s relationship with Elawa. “People are wanting locally grown foods,” she says. “There has been such a renewed interest in people gardening from home. We’ve had the highest number of orders from our virtual market—our seedlings sold out.” Because Elawa was unable to open its Garden Market in the spring, they went online. Each week, people had the

opportunity to order produce and products from the farm as well as other locally sourced producers where they could pick up curbside later in the week.

“It’s so important to me that Elawa Farm continues to be a good neighbor to the greater county area,” she explains. “Local farmers have really stepped up and met the need of providing food to those who need it. We want to do whatever we can to keep these connections strong.”

Calvert says that going forward, Elawa Farm plans to leverage its production to improve healthy food access to its neighbors. “This will go beyond just what we produce. There will also be an educational component to the culinary programs we offer that will be more public facing and more

real time. If we happen to have chives from the garden, we’ll have some recipes ready to go to show you what you can do with them. The silver lining in all of this shutdown time is that there is a real interest in what’s happening on our farm.”

This summer, Calvert hopes that the community will participate in one of its many on-site workshops, camps, or even a yoga class. Additionally, Elawa Farm will be offering a free, 45-minute tour of its beautifully restored farm and garden every last Saturday of the month through September, beginning at 11 a.m.

The Elawa Farm Group was built in 1917 for A. Watson Armour, a member of one of Chicago’s oldest and most distinguished families, and is considered architecturally significant as a rare example of a Lake Forest gentleman’s farm. It is also noteworthy for its fine design and for its association with two very significant architects: David Adler and Alfred Hopkins. The farm’s name Elawa comes from a composite of two of its previous owners Elsa and A. Watson Armour and Lelia and Wallace Carroll, who purchased the property in 1954. The buildings forming the main farm group have been restored and adapted for today’s use to preserve Elawa Farm as a stunning example of estate farm architecture and a unique gem of Lake Forest.

Elawa Farm is a public-private partnership dedicated to the preservation and stewardship of a unique combination of natural setting, designed landscapes, and buildings of architectural and historic significance. In 1998, the City of Lake Forest acquired a 16-acre parcel of land, including the original farm buildings. This purchase created an opportunity for a unique partnership of public and private organizations to collaborate in the preservation and use of this property.

“I’m so honored to join the Elawa Farm community and lead the organization in its next chapter, alongside its dedicated board of directors and staff. Elawa is a truly unique and beautiful place. There is nothing else like this in the Midwest and I look forward to expanding its programs and presence in Lake Forest and beyond.”

HEIDI ARCHIBALD NÉE SMITH relocated from Jupiter, Florida to Lake Forest in 2002 with her then husband, Mike, and their 4-year-old triplets Kate, Belle, and Michael, she cried. The housing market at the time was hot, and Mike had fallen in love with a 1928 Tudor Revival home that had green-painted countertops and unsafe sharp slivers poking through the pine floors.

“I was almost in tears the day we moved in,” says Archibald. “We met with an architect to discuss a potential renovation, and the plans were quadruple our budget.”

Her mother, an avid Today show watcher, encouraged Archibald to apply for the show’s “Dream Kitchen” prize. The winner would receive help with a kitchen renovation, and the process would be documented in a six-episode arc on one of the first-ever reality television shows, This Old House.

Eighteen years ago, the show chose a Lake Forest family to feature on the beloved series , setting the homeowner on a fortuitous career path.
WHEN
60 FOREST & BLUFF
Designer Heidi Archibald

Archibald remembers sketching a floorplan for both her kitchen at the time and for her dream iteration, taking extensive photos and videos, and later biking to the local post office on deadline day to mail her application materials and hope for the best.

Two weeks later, she heard from Today —the Smiths were in the running. After narrowing the finalists down to three families and launching a nationwide vote, the show’s producers informed Archibald that she’d won. They broke ground three days later and, for 12 weeks, Archibald worked side-by-side with This Old House experts and a local design/build team to create her dream kitchen.

The footprint went from 175 square-feet to 400 square-feet to accommodate the young family, and the teams added beautiful period cabinetry and light fixtures, new appliances, smooth hardwood flooring and a bright breakfast area.

“People would drive by to see it,” says Archibald. “I was overjoyed. The remodel was not free, but it was a good value. That was when the design bug first really took hold of me.”

She thought the house would be her forever home but then baby William arrived a short 18 months later, and the family of six quickly needed more space. They moved to a nearly 6,000 square-foot 1960s home, then moved again, spending stints abroad in Singapore and Finland for Mike’s job.

“We lived in a condo in Singapore, and it was there that I realized you don’t need big to be happy,” says Archibald. “It was a relief not to have so much to take care of, and our family was much closer together. Bigger is not always better. It is about how you feel in the house.”

While living in Finland, where the pace of life is much slower and while her kids were in school, Archibald finally had time to study design in London. When she returned to the United States, she cut the size of her house in half and reached out to local builder Eric Goebeler about an internship with his firm in the hopes of eventually landing a full-time position. It proved to be a perfect fit, leading Archibald to five years of design work at The Goebeler Company.

During that same time, while on the job, Archibald met her second husband, Tim, an architect. She eventually joined him as a designer at his firm Midwest Architecture Studio in

FOREST & BLUFF 61
The Archibald family’s current home The Archibald’s dining room

Market Square and now has her own growing roster of clients.

“The experience with This Old House helped me discover a passion and gave me the confidence to pursue it,” says Archibald. “Life is funny. A little impulse to prove a point about my terrible kitchen turned into a career. Upon reflecting on it as much as I have, we might not be here now otherwise. I definitely wouldn’t have met Tim. The builder I worked for introduced us.”

The pair have a love for design in common and, Archibald says, appreciate the same things, like cooking, gardening, a love of the outdoors, and the creative process. They just finished renovating and designing their 92-year-old home—yet another from 1928— together with a blend of mid-century modern elements and some collections from their pasts.

That said, Archibald’s taste has evolved, and she now prefers clean lines and a slightly more

modern aesthetic. Even though she’s had five kitchens between This Old House and today, she notes that there are similarities between her dream kitchen and the one she occupies now, like Pietra Cardosa countertops and timeless white cabinetry. With six children between Archibald and her husband, Tim, they kept the larger footprint, too.

Fittingly, Archibald says she designs with history in mind and encourages her clients to make beauty from the past. She recently helped an NFL coach’s family redo their home in Lake Bluff with the aim of creating an upscale beach house. A football fan herself, the project was especially gratifying for Archibald.

“I have tried to teach my kids to follow their heart,” says Archibald. “As you age, you hope that you’ll have a second phase of life to be excited about. This is my next chapter. I feel very lucky and sure am glad I decided to enter a silly contest on a whim.”

Beauty and the Books

latest novel,

64 FOREST & BLUFF
words by Allison Duncan portrait photography by Monica Kass Rogers hair, makeup & styling by Theresa DeMaria Best-selling Lake Forest author Katherine Reay debuts her

FACED WITH THE reality of a yearlong recovery following a severe injury in January 2009, national bestselling and award-winning author Katherine Reay turned to her favorite time-tested novels for comfort, reading upward of 70 books in six months from writers like Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë. “New stories required too much energy and imagination,” she says.

That said, unable to return to work as a marketer or to pursue hobbies like tennis and volunteering, Reay channeled the energy she did have into weaving a tale of her own in her first novel Dear Mr. Knightley, which follows a protagonist Samantha as she falls in love and learns to write her own story. The latter, of course, sounds familiar.

The book debuted to critical acclaim and was named a 2014 Christy Award finalist, 2014 Carol Awards winner for Best Contemporary and Best Debut, and 2014 INSPY AWARD winner for Best Debut. It was the first novel Reay had ever written, and she sold it to

publishing giant Harper Collins in a three-book deal.

“It was remarkable,” says Reay. “It was a book I’d written during a time of pain when the blocks of my life were rearranged, so I did not really expect anything of it. The minute it sold, I had to figure out how to write another novel. Being an author is kind of like being an architect in that you’re only as good as your next project.”

For Reay, each subsequent novel—from Lizzy & Jane and A Portrait of Emily Price to The Austen Escape and The Printed Letter Bookshop—proved she was born to be a writer. Often described as love letters to books, Reay’s character-driven work examines the past as a means to find one’s best way forward. Unsurprisingly, then, Reay mainly finds inspiration from real life.

“If I know anything about humans, it’s that we are always changing,” explains Reay. “We are not two dimensional. There’s good and bad within all of us. I like to plug into those turning points in all of our lives, which happen at any age.”

For Reay, those moments happened when graduating from Northwestern University, marrying, having children, turning 40, and during the 17-plus times she’s moved—from Texas and England to Ireland and

FOREST & BLUFF 65

Washington—throughout her lifetime. With those major plot points always in mind, Reay begins her writing process.

She knows where she wants her characters to begin and end but as for how they reach their ultimate destination? “Surprise me,” says Reay. “I love when the characters are angrier or more determined than I thought they were. I hold onto ideas loosely. If my characters don’t surprise me, then they won’t surprise the reader either.”

What continually surprises Reay about the publishing industry, however, is how many up-and-coming authors come to her for advice on how to ‘make it’ as an author, to which she simply says, “Keep writing.” In order to hone one’s craft or reach that next level, Reay explains, one must keep writing and searching for new ways to express things. “It is basic advice but also what matters most,” she says. To find story ideas, Reay voraciously reads, brainstorms with writer friends and “looks around.”

For her latest, the May 2020 Of Literature and Lattes, Reay for the first time returned to a past place and characters in the fictional town of Winsome, Illinois, where two friends discover the grace of letting go and the joy found in unexpected change. The novel can be read as a standalone book, but astute readers will recognize names and faces from The Printed Letter Bookshop

“It was a great challenge to write a new arc for characters that people have already met,” says Reay. “The mother/daughter relationship intrigued me. How often do we clearly see our parents? Those relationships are so layered, and we all bring our own perceptions to them. I wanted to play with those misconceptions and misunderstandings.”

Relationships will always remain at the core of Reay’s work, especially those of a romantic nature. In fact, her first agent described the role of romance in a novel as the whipped cream on a sundae, in that it should never be left off but does not necessarily need to be the primary ingredient.

Another ingredient in Reay’s novels is scene, which she often uses as its own character. There’s always a

reason, Reay says, why she places her books where she does.

“Everything is a character to me,” she explains. “I always place my books in places I’ve been or lived so I understand the culture. I just finished a novel in Boston, London and Paris. It’s fun to explore new places. If all goes well, it’ll be out in 2022.”

There’s no place like home, though. When not plotting a character’s next adventure, Reay loves walking to the Lake Michigan beach—she walks six to seven miles each day—and spending time in her garden. She’s also working her way through a summer reading list filled with spy novels and mysteries by authors like Daniel Silva, Anthony Horowitz and Erik Larson. “I cannot wait for the reopening of Lake Forest’s bookshops and libraries,” she says. “We love our community here.”

RF MICRONEEDLING AT PERLIS WELLNESS CENTER

erlis Wellness Center is offering radio frequency (RF) microneedling, the Virtue RF. Our new machine combines the latest generation of microneedling technology with radiofrequency (RF), a proven non-invasive skin tightening method  and  LED light therapy, all in one. This powerful treatment quickly and effectively reduces fine lines, scars, stretch marks, and other blemishes—in addition to lifting and firming mild skin laxity and giving a smoother, more youthful appearance. It can be done all year (sun is not an issue), and on any skin type. Another great advantage is that it requires no down time

1. You’ll see results, quickly Three factors are unique to RF this process, producing results faster than other microneedling options. First, integrated RF energy accelerates collagen production and skin tightening. Second, LED light calms inflammation and speeds healing time. Third, gold-tipped needles create invisible “microchannels” in the skin that are incredibly receptive to nutrient serums and plateletrich plasma applied during treatment.

2. The treatment is virtually painless Older microneedling technologies use a pen that can tear skin, which causes pain and downtime. Virtue RF’s superfine needles enter skin smoothly and evenly with no tearing. Numbing cream applied 30 minutes before treatment and a chilling device used during treatment keep you comfortable.

3. RF microneedling is safe for almost any skin type and can be done in the summer. It prompts natural skin resurfacing without using heat, harsh chemicals, or removing skin layers, proving much safer for all skin types.

4. It tightens skin better than other microneedling options While microneedling already helps firm skin texture, the addition of RF energy takes skin tightening to another level. It is an excellent option to tighten mild jowling, sagging skin around the eyelids, cheeks, or neck.

5. It’s excellent for minimizing stretch marks, acne scars, and large pores. It addresses stretch marks that are typically difficult to treat. The collagen-building “power couple” of microneedling and RF improves the texture of stretch-marked skin. It also helps with acne scars and large pores.

GARDEN ORNAMENTS

GARDEN STATUARY, while evocative of European classical gardens, is comfortable in any setting. It can punctuate a favored horticultural space, gently offer visual respite to the eye between large swaths of green, or simply give interest to an otherwise quiet spot. The Italian hand-carved limestone dog here (one of a pair) is sympathetically carved with crossed paws. The pair patinated in a stone yard in Italy for 10 years and arrived last winter to the United States. Whether framing a home’s entrance or drawing one’s eye toward a garden path, these relaxed-yet-elegant pups will last a lifetime, aging gracefully with each passing year.

Italian hand-carved dogs and many other beautiful garden-centric items are available at Hortus by Craig Bergmann. Please call to schedule a viewing. Hortus by Craig Bergmann 900 N. Waukegan Road, Lake Forest, 847-251-8355, hortusbycraigbergmann.com.
