ay always seems jam packed with entertaining activities—dance recitals, end-of-school-year celebrations, and Memorial Day getaways are scattered across our calendars and agenda books. May’s issue of Sheridan Road is also packed—albeit with entertaining stories rather than activities. Our cover showcases jewelry designer and Highland Park resident Graziela Kaufman, who shares the creative process behind guiding gems from mine to jewelry box. Our second feature celebrates the enterprising Alyssa Rapp. is Winnetka wunderkind travels back and forth to California where she is on faculty at the Stanford Graduate School of Business—in addition to teaching, she balances life as CEO, wife, and mother.

Staying on campus, we round out the features with the generosity of Lake Forest’s Dr. Richard Chaifetz. His alma mater, St. Louis University, did him a favor more than 40 years ago; a favor he has returned with gifts totaling more than $27 million.

Continuing with the collegiate theme, catches up with Karina Kavanagh who took a gap year to travel the world before entering Boston College. Need help planning a college graduation party or other cause for celebration?

TAKING the LEAP

Karina Kavanagh deferred college for a gap year abroad traveling more than 50,000 miles around the world.

Igraduated from high school in May of 2017, but I haven’t spent the past year in dorm rooms, fraternities, or classrooms. In fact, those were put on pause for hostels and street markets in eight di erent countries.

I watched the sun rise over the Great Wall of China, sat behind the Colosseum, dodged motorbikes in the narrow streets of Hanoi, and strolled along the rainy cobblestones of Rome. I bathed elephants and earned an advanced scuba certi cation to study marine life in ailand. Taught English to a kindergarten class in Cambodia, walked on ancient stones, hiking trails, dirt roads, and everything in between. I shared my culture with homestay families on a rice farm in rural ailand and in an apartment in urban China. I worked with victims of Agent Orange and learned ve di erent languages to varying degrees, ranging from four words to near- uency. I wore dresses to Italian opera houses and hiking boots under jungle skies.

All of this was done (and so much more) in one school year. It’s called a gap year, and it changed my life. A relatively new concept in the United States, the idea of taking a year o between high school and university is common in many European countries. Students often travel, volunteer, work, teach, or further their education somehow. ey learn new things and return home with fresh perspectives on the world and their place in it, now more prepared to enter university.

During my junior year, I stumbled upon the idea. I could take a year o after graduation with no consequences, travel, and attempt to make some small di erence in the world. I could take time to nd out what I truly want to pursue before burning out in the relentless rat race of the American school system. It was the

perfect plan. My parents, true to form, threw their full support behind me. ey gave me only two rules: I must have a deferred college acceptance waiting for me upon my return, and I must spend my time in either service or education. So in the rst semester of my senior year, I applied to schools like everyone else and accepted admission at Boston College. I submitted a request to defer my admission until the fall of 2018. en I sat down and made a list of everything I had ever dreamed of doing. Nothing was too big, too small, too far away, or too impossible. Everything went on the list. I still have it, scribbled on a piece of paper torn from calculus notes, but now, there are so many things checked o .

My gap year has intrinsically changed who I am as a person. I am self-reliant, because when you’re traveling alone thousands of miles from home, you have no one but yourself. I am con dent in my abilities and sure of my passions—this year has made it abundantly clear that I want to pursue a career in international relations. I developed skills that will serve me for the rest of my life: to live freely, to have courage, to solve unexpected problems, to challenge myself, to respect others, to be patient, to collect memories instead of things, and to never be afraid of the word no. I have formed lasting attachments and have left pieces of my heart everywhere this year has taken me. Yet when it is time, I will be thrilled to come home. I cannot wait to pursue the passions I have discovered. If I could see myself from last year, I would tell her one thing…“ ose things you’ve always dreamed of doing someday? Someday is now. Go.”

THE INTERVIEW

Sheridan Road visits with North Shore resident SHANDA KAISER, to hear her story of hope after her third child was born with Down syndrome.

When did you nd out you were having a child with Down syndrome? We didn’t nd out that Taylor had Down syndrome until she was born. at day is still so clear in my mind. She struggled to breathe so my husband Brett stayed close to her as the nurse worked. He said, ‘She looks like she has Down syndrome.’ I immediately began to feel my heart in my throat. I remember looking up at the doctor with tears streaming down my face. I loved her the minute they put her in my arms but I was terri ed. My rst job after graduating with my masters in social work was helping families in crisis and yet I still didn’t feel prepared for that moment. I felt a whirlwind of emotions. Will she su er? How will this a ect my other children? My husband remained steady. He said ‘It’s going to be ok, she just needs love.’

What is Down syndrome? Down syndrome is a condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of their 21st chromosome. is causes physical and developmental delays as well as medical challenges.

Did your daughter experience any medical issues? Yes, to be honest her medical issues consumed our lives for a while. We found ourselves at the Leukemia clinic at Lurie Children’s Hospital when she was only four days old. is experience was one of many life-changing moments since having Taylor. Being at this hospital amongst children

ghting for their lives was like nothing I can describe. Taylor continues to deal with challenges but we now have perspective. We feel blessed because we know there are others dealing with so much more than anything we’ve had to go through.

How did you get through those years? It wasn’t always easy. You nd strength in other people. We had family and friends who would drop everything to bring a meal or come in the middle of the night when Taylor had to go to the hospital. Sometimes it was a stranger that made the di erence. Brett remembers a day when he was feeling down and a stranger at the supermarket smiled and said, ‘She’s so beautiful.’ He needed to know she would be accepted.

Does it help knowing others that have children with Down syndrome? Absolutely, I’ve met the most amazing people because of Taylor. Many of my mentors and closest friends have children with special needs. e thing I wanted the most when she was born was to connect with someone that understood what I was going through.

What’s your message? So much good can come out of the challenges we face. Taylor is a gift to us. She’s taught us what’s important. My other kids see the world di erently because of Taylor, yet they don’t see Taylor as being di erent. My daughter Brooke says

‘She’s just like any other kid.’ ey don’t limit her. She sometimes needs help but she can do whatever she puts her mind too.

What’s next? I’ve joined a group of parents that are working to open a GiGi’s Playhouse in Deer eld. GiGi’s Playhouse is an Achievement Center for people with Down syndrome. It’s a place where families don’t have to feel alone after receiving the news their child has Down syndrome. It’s a place where families have access to the tools they need to succeed. Children with Down syndrome need regular therapies, tutoring, and more. ey can receive many of these services for free at GiGi’s Playhouse. GiGi’s Playhouse has helped change the way the world views a person with Down syndrome. Having a GiGi’s Playhouse nearby would not only help Taylor and so many others with Down syndrome in Lake County but it would be a great place for the community.

What do you need to open? GiGi’s Playhouse is a nonpro t organization funded solely by donations. To be blunt, we need charitable donations and sponsors. Once open, we will welcome volunteers to assist with tutoring, interacting with the children, administrative tasks, events, and more.

To learn more about GiGi’s Playhouse-Deer eld, visit gigisplayhouse.org/dee eld or nd them on Facebook at fb.com/gigisplayhousedeer eld.

The BUSINESS of BEAUTY

Dr. Tina Venetos brings state-of-theart technology, along with over 20 years of experience, to discerning clientele at Northshore Dermatology.

“Healthy skin comes rst,” says Dr. Tina Venetos, founder of Northshore Dermatology and in private practice since 1996.

With a agship location in Lake Blu , spanning over 5,000 square feet, along with locations in Wilmette and Libertyville, Dr. Venetos stays busy. So busy, in fact, that all three locations have extended their hours, now including Saturday appointments.

In addition to new hours, Dr. Venetos and her team are excited to o er two new services exclusive to them in the area: e Perk—a brand new add-on system to the HydraFacial MD that focuses on ne lines around the eyes and mouth, making lips look fuller and more hydrated—and Allumera—a booster that magnies the results of photofacial treatments. “I love using things that work synergistically,” she says. “I encourage the use of anti-aging products to enhance your ller, Botox, and cosmetic procedures. Other popular treatments include SkinPen microneedling to promote collagen production for a fresher look; “Lift and Lose” contouring, employing the combination of ller and Kybella to give the face a more sculpted appearance; miraDry for the treatment of underarm sweating; and PicoSure, the best tattoo removal laser out there.

For women in their 20s, she says: “Exercise, eat healthy, moisturize, don’t smoke, and use sunscreen. If you have a tendency towards crow’s feet, for example, a little preventive Botox can help from those lines getting worse. e key is keeping it natural.” When you hit your 30s, a photofacial will be pivotal in erasing sun damage along with monthly HydraFacials to leave you glowing and refreshed—with zero downtime.

“After having children,” she says, “we specialize in mommy makeovers, including ermiVa—vaginal rejuvenation for whole body health. In your 40s, CoolSculpting® is also great to eliminate unwanted fat, and Ultherapy® for tightening the skin of the face and body without downtime. Moving into your 50s and beyond, the

use of long-lasting llers like Bella ll® and Sculptra® are designed to add volume, lift the upper face, and contour the lower face.”

More and more, Dr. Venetos is seeing more male clients across her three North Shore locations. “When women think about aging, we think about wrinkles. Men think about hair loss,” she shares. “For that, we o er NeoGraft hair transplantation, which is scarless and has no downtime—and it gives the best results.” She says men are also seeking out Botox, ller, and CoolSculpting® services.

With the summer months approaching, and May being Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Venetos provided some recommendations on protecting ourselves: “Early detection is key. I can’t stress enough the importance of yearly skin checks.” What about sunscreen? “Look for both UVA and UVB protection and for it to be water resistant. Being sure to apply 30 minutes before going outside—and reapplying every two hours thereafter—is more important than the SPF number on the bottle.”

To keep sun damage at bay, she swears by Elta MD’s line featuring transparent zinc oxide and Senté Pollution Shield, which also protects against free radicals that break down our collagen.

A regular golfer (a passion she shares with her three children), Dr. Venetos is diligent about sun protection when she hits the course at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest and on her yearly travels to Greece. A North Shore resident for the past 23 years, she reveals, “If I could do it all over again, I’d do it the same exact way. I love my patients, I love what I do.”

Wilmette’s Jack Nixon ful lls his life’s masterpiece by capturing the majesty of Michigan Avenue in pencil.

When Wilmette’s Jack Nixon graduated from art school with a degree in graphic design, his father asked him if he would draw the house of one of his friends.

“I did as my father asked and the illustration turned out beautifully,” remembers Nixon, who draws only in pencil. “It made me wonder if I might be able to turn that type of work into a business.”

After taking out an ad in the local paper, Nixon began receiving commissions from numerous North Shore homeowners for sketches of their houses.

“Although I was very busy, I realized that drawing original works I could publish was how I could make money as an artist,” Nixon says.

It wasn’t long before Nixon received a commission to draw Lake Forest’s downtown Market Square, an architectural marvel designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw that is credited as the rst planned shopping center in the United States.

“Market Square was my rst published print,” he says. “It was 1987. It took four months to complete and I loved every minute as I am an architect at heart.”

Nixon’s love for the design details in Lake Forest’s town square led him to turn his sights to Chicago. “It’s funny that even though I grew up in Wilmette, I rarely ventured into the city. When I started to explore Chicago for my art work, it was like seeing it for the rst time.”

In the late 1980s, Nixon began to sketch what would become his life’s masterpiece, Studies in Light and Form: e Chicago Seven and the Michigan Avenue Bridge Sculptures. is six-piece suite of drawings is a large, 35-foot modular art installation depicting the many architectural and sculptural splendors appearing on and around the southern entrance and southern foot of Chicago’s Magni cent Mile. Nixon also handmade each frame that showcases his work. His exhibit made its rst debut in Winnetka in October 2017.

e two main drawings, Study in Light and Form: e Chicago River’s Southside Spires and Study in Light and Form: e Wrigley, Tribune, and Medinah Spires are 50 x 66 master works that are a matching and mirrored pair re ecting a past era of design and craftsmanship that may never be seen again in the United States.

What is most awe-inspiring about Nixon’s work is his level of

detail. It’s so complete that the illustrations look like photos—not drawings. From the shading on the brick and stone exteriors of the buildings to the de nition of the light in the landscape’s background, Nixon left nothing to chance.

“I only worked on one piece at a time,” says Nixon of the collection that took more than 8,000 hours over 25 years to complete.

“I gave up my days, evenings, weekends with friends, the chance to earn a real living, even sacri ced my marriage to complete this

I just believed so sincerely that someone had to do this— that Chicago deserved it. e process took so long because when I nished my rst drawing, e Wrigley, Tribune, and Medinah Spires, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to draw again at that level. It kept me from moving forward until I realized I had no choice but to nish what I consider to be my life’s work.”

Nixon’s hope is that Study in Light and Form will be the centerpiece of a 2020 architectural retrospective at the Chicago Cultural Center that will be celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the dedication of the Michigan Avenue Bridge.

“I’ve been holding on to these pieces for 30 years because I want them to stay in Chicago,” Nixon says. “I keep dreaming that a patron will nd his or her way to my studio, purchase the collection, and then donate them to the Art Institute. at would be my dream come true. at all of my pieces remain together, in our city’s most beautiful art museum.”

COLLISION OF MYTHS

THEATER is month at Writers eatre, director Kimberly Senior takes on Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prizewinning Buried Child, somewhere at the intersection of the American Dream and an altogether darker truth.

relationship she has built with Writers eatre over the years. “I started seeing theater there in the late ‘90s and loved what they were doing,” relates Senior.

Now she is a resident director at the renowned Glencoe theater—Buried Child will be her third play there. “ is has been on my bucket list for a long time—I’m a huge fan of Shepard’s work, and we thought Writers would be a great home for it,” she says.

Things come full circle this spring for director Kimberly Senior as she takes the helm of Buried Child, Sam Shepard’s tour de force drama now on stage at Writers eatre through June 17—fresh out of college, Senior worked the box o ce at Steppenwolf during their 1995 run of the very same play, starring Gary Sinise and Ethan Hawke.

Having relocated to Chicago from the east coast after graduation to pursue acting, Senior landed in something of an uno cial internship there, the beginning of what was a 23-year mentorship with the late Martha Lavey: “I just stepped up: folding programs, parking cars, xing the copier, ling grants—anything,” she remembers.

In time Senior began directing and teaching, eventually starting her own company, Collaboraction eatre: “ e idea of what it means to cultivate the next generation of artists and theatregoers became very important to me,” she shares.

Born out of such cultivation and collaboration is the special

At the surface, Buried Child is the story of Vince and Shelly, a young couple embarking on a coast-to-coast road trip, stopping along the way in downstate Illinois to meet Vince’s grandparents. But the result of this rural pit stop is something altogether haunting.

“Shepard shows us the collision of the American Dream, of who we thought we were and could be, with the crushing reality of who we’ve become, examined through the lens of two generations of a family in claustrophobic circumstances,” she explains, assuring, “It’s macabre but not without hope.”

“ e story asks you to look at the myths we create and subscribe to, like the American ethos of the cowboy and what it means to be a man in this country, and the challenges we face,” she continues. “It asks, ‘What are the obstacles that keep us from moving forward?’

“ ese are the types of stories that Writers does really well. ey appeal to us on a more individual, psychological level but then have this larger social context,” Senior explains. “And their audience is so engaged and intelligent. It’s a wonderful community in which to tell stories.”

CORE STRENGTH

CHRISTY RILEY keeps North Shore residents toned teaching Pilates at Lake Forest’s Core Pilates. Between inhales and exhales, here is how Riley stays t and on trend.

ON HER NIGHTSTAND

“As a mother, wife, and Pilates instructor, I don’t sit down a lot. But on my nightstand, I keep a collection of my favorite inspirational books: I’ve Been inking ..: Re ections, Prayers and Meditations for a Meaningful Life by Maria Shriver, e Little Book of Hygge, Danish Secrets to Happy Living by Meik Wiking, and Power Prayers for Mothers by Rachel Quillin. Every night before bed, I grab one and read a chapter or excerpt. It puts my brain in a good place before I fall asleep. It’s also frequently the rst thing I think of in the morning when I wake up. Not a bad way to nish and start the day! I’ve also recently discovered Audiobooks. I just nished Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, which is a fabulous story. I am now onto James Clavell’s Shogun.  ese are the top two on my Dad’s short list of favorites. I’m working my way down his list!”

ON HER MOBILE

“At Core Pilates, we really strive to stay smart and creative in our teaching. My favorite website is pilatesanytime.com because it contains hundreds of classes and workshops from all schools of instruction. It’s great! I also follow laurabpilates.com and newyorkpilates.com on Instagram for bursts of inspiration. When it comes to blogs, that pretty much means chill time for me. I enjoy perusing somethingnavy.com, sincerelyjules.com, and goop.com. On Instagram, I also follow my stylist friend at lrstyleme. All of these show classic, clean, and simple fashion inspirations, and I enjoy the health and lifestyle articles as well.”

IN HER EARBUDS

“Every day I play a variety of chill playlists on Spotify while teaching, like ‘Relax and Unwind.’ ey are perfect for my classes. When I am with family and friends I listen to everything from the classics: e Cure, Tears for Fears, Prince, Depeche Mode, New Order, Chicago, e Doobie Brothers, and Journey to newer favorites like My Morning Jacket, Alabama Shakes, Post Malone, and Khalid. I just saw Tedeschi-Trucks Band at Chicago eatre, and it was great. OCEANIQUE

Gorgeously presented high cuisine with French in uence and personal touches makes Oceanique an exceptional evening out.

Right from the moment they delivered the pre-appetizer amuse-bouche, we knew that Oceanique meant business. e presentation was picture perfect. e avors were even better. It was a sword sh and halibut ceviche with ginger, lime, and basil wrapped in a ribbon of leek. Tiny cuts of tomato and a housemade gluten-free potato chip act as taste and texture accents, and drizzles of carrot and cilantro oils complete the palate. It was a complex combination of robust avors that resolved in a feeling of elegant satisfaction. It turned out, course after course, that avor experience is a hallmark of Oceanique.

e design of the dining room is simple and minimal, white table cloths and champagne colored walls with classical accent wall panels at intervals along the west wall, creating a nod to tradition while evoking modern sensibilities. A touch of golden glow is introduced via Edison bulbs encased in glass boxes. e minimal environment draws even more focus onto the exquisite presentation of the plates.

DINNER DATE

DINNER DATE

From the Plats Chaud (Hot Dishes) menu, we had the Butternut Squash Ravioli. e pasta is delicate, and the avors so deep and warming. Fennel and crispy sage bring a woodsy avor while the squash keeps it light and creamy. Chopped prosciutto and walnuts beautifully round out the avors and textures.

Next we sampled the Wild Japanese Day Boat Scallops. is is another incredible, dark, soothing dish with the inherent silky qualities of the scallop surrounded by the sharp avors of soy sauce from their lobster-soy broth, a vinegar lilt from an in-house concoction called white boy kimchi, and a little sting of cilantro. ere’s a growing spice that continues to build with each bite and a fantastic, deep ramen’esque quality.

From dark, warming avors we move to crisp, cool, and refreshing. At the top of the Salades menu we found the Wild Maine Lobster, Belgian Endive, and Heirloom Tomato salad. With thick, pillowy pads of Bufala Mozzarella, slices of avocado, and a little cluster of caviar as a centerpiece, this is a very decadent and elaborate dish. e endive is sparing but potent bringing a sharp arugula addition to the sweet lobster meat and the salty sting of red caviar. Delicious.

Moving into the entrees, we rst experienced the Wild Maine Halibut. is is a sh dish that calls for a red wine pairing, given the sauce itself is a port-cabernet sauce adding a little heft to a sh that’s very delicate in avor. e preparation was perfect, brushed in olive oil and roasted at a low temperature, keeping the sh extremely tender and juicy. With sides of broccolini and orange cauli ower, it’s a precise conglomeration of exquisite earthy avors and delicate textures.

e Organic Norwegian Fjord Ocean Trout goes in a very different direction, pairing it’s fresh sh avor with south-of-theborder spice, turmeric, poblano pepper, and topped with a fresh sprig of cilantro. Everything on the plate is bold, avor-forward, and distinct. e side of butternut squash even reveals a vibrant current of spiciness. e side of elotes is the best, though. A mound of corn o the cobb covered in butter, lime juice, chili powder, cotija cheese, and crema fresca. It’s creamy and delicious.

For dessert we ordered the Napolean. It’s the most diaphonous dessert imaginable. Everything is made in house, three layers of aky pu ed pastry sandwiching layers of lighter-thanair vanilla mousseline. Even the side of ice cream is made in the kitchen. With a sprinkling of seasonal berries to complete the picture, it’s the kind of light, exceptional decadence that you can t into the end of any meal.

Oceanique is located at 505 Main Street in Evanston, 847-8643435, oceanique.com.

COCKTAILS

e real headliner here is the beautifully curated wine list. Sometimes, that’s a colloquialism for “pared down to the essential bottles.” is time, it’s a collection of all the nest they could o er. e drinks list is 39 pages long and feels like a novel. e bottles inside those pages are exquisite. But for the introduction to a ne meal, we recommend starting with one of their signature cocktails.

PASSIONFRUIT MARTINI

Belvedere vodka

Champagne

Passionfruit sorbet

is martini is very luxurious, with a sharp champagne zz and a silky creaminess thanks to the housemade passionfruit sorbet. It’s very fruity and nicely boozy, a wonderful combination. Served with two blackberries and a raspberry speared over the rim.

BLACKHEART Journeyman Barrel-aged Gin Luxardo Yellow Chartreuse

Fresh lemon

e Blackheart is really dry on the palate. It hits with a citrus brightness before settling into a spicy, almost cinnamon vibe and leaves your mouth feeling as if you’ve just eaten an orange. It’s complex, with a constantly evolving avor narrative, and a strong alcohol punch.

BIG SKY

Channel your inner cowgirl—or boy— at e Resort at Paws Up in Montana, specializing in authentic and often thrilling ranching, adventure, and glamping activities to suit everyone from the city to the town.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark stumbled onto something when they entered what is now called Montana on April 27, 1805. Yes, the very same Lewis and Clark who led the rst expedition to cross the western part of the United States and stood upon “Lookout Rock” to take in the sheer expanse and breathtaking beauty of Montana. It’s no coincidence that e Resort at Paws Up settled in this same place to establish its ranch on 37,000 acres of the very same unspoiled Montana wilderness that captivated Lewis and Clark.

So, if you’ve ever dreamed of wrangling cattle, rappelling down a cli , glamping along a riverbank, or simply soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Montana’s “Big Sky” from the front

porch of your own log cabin, Paws Up will not disappoint. Now is the perfect time to book with nonstop ights from Chicago to Missoula beginning in June. While e Resort at Paws Up may have coined the term “glamping,” it is also known for its extensive ranching and adventure activities, and lodging in luxury homes in addition to luxury tents. e name “Paws Up” came from a family friend who thought that when dogs are happy, they jump up and show their paws. Hence the saying “Paws Up!”

You’ll be happy, too, and nd it hard to leave. One of the rst things you receive at check-in—which takes place at the aptly named Lewis & Clark Reception Barn—is a set of keys to your own car to use around the ranch’s property. Remember, the ranch is a sprawling 37,000 acres, so most activities and venues are not within walking distance to one another. You’ll be glad they’re not because it only enhances the opportunity to connect with the vast and beautiful Montana sky.

You’ll also receive instructions on downloading the Paws Up app for smartphones. Despite the resort’s decidedly rustic aesthetic, it o ers advanced technology to assist guests. is handy “concierge” at your ngertips, includes itineraries, appointments, messages, maps, menus, and a lot more. Once checked in, you’ll drive to your selected lodging at one of the two vastly di erent options in accommodation options:

Luxury Homes—aka huge log cabins, named after some aspect of the Lewis and Clark expedition, such as Sage rasher and Cackling Goose. Each home o ers all the creature comforts of a ve-star hotel (think 300-thread-count sheets and sumptuous hot tubs under the stars) in a rugged and re ned luxury home. Nestled in a forest of tall timbers that overlook rolling meadows, majestic rivers, pastoral creeks, and panoramic mountain scapes.

Safari-style Tents—aka glamping and e American Safari™, allow you to get close to nature in your perfectly appointed tent (think hardwood oors, ne linens, air conditioning, and heat, plus a private, en-suite bath with heated slate oors, stylish vanities, and Montana-size showers). Revel in a serene and authentic experience with the sound of the river rushing by and an open-air dining pavilion complete with roaring replace and a bon re pit for s’mores and star gazing after dinner. Camps span di erent areas of the resort, from Creekside Camp, along a creek; Moonlight Camp, at the foot of the Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock; and River Camp, on the banks of the Blackfoot River.

Once checked in, you’ll be tempted to stay put and relax in your private oasis, but you’ll want to check your app to see what’s next on your itinerary. en, grab your map and car keys, and set out for the Wilderness Outpost—a huge barn-like structure that serves as a base camp of sorts and houses the resort’s large, high-end gift shop. All activities (except spa treatments and yoga, which take place at Spa Town) start and end here, where you’ll check in, get instructions and gear, and then head out with your highly capable and friendly guide or two. e vast resort property o ers 100 miles of trails, 10 miles of the Blackfoot River, and 1.5 million acres of the nearby Bob Marshall Wilderness Area to make for the ultimate outdoor playground with options to suit any age, gender, risk-appetite, and adventurous spirit.

For children, supervised, age-appropriate activities include everything from hiking and horseback riding to shing and mountain biking, as well as nature education, wildlife appreciation, and wrangler activities. ere are so many adventure activities to choose from. Here are a few that our group experienced and recommends:

Equestrian Adventures—Saddle up to experience the ultimate western experience of a Cattle Drive, where you’ll set out to gather the cattle and trail them to the working corrals, sort some cattle, then trail them back to the home pasture. It’s the real deal, and both skilled and novice riders can join experienced ranch hands in driving a herd of cattle for an experience of a lifetime. Or, perhaps you’re more in the mood for guided horseback riding along pristine meadows and along trails forested with ancient Ponderosa pines as you rise to a ridge overlooking Paws Up ranch.

Fly Fishing— e Resort at Paws Up is an angler’s retreat that’s located within the golden triangle of western trout shing. It boasts a creel-full of legendary rivers on property or near-by—including the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, Missouri, and Clark Fork.

River Trips—Choose from three types of river trips for all levels of adventure. For a leisurely, calmer trek, the Clearwater River Canoe Trip o ers fun for all ages. ose wanting a bit more excitement can oat down the Blackfoot River and its class I and II rapids in a raft or in atable kayak. And for those wanting the ultimate thrill, opt for the Alberton Gorge Whitewater Rafting, a full day adventure featuring class III+ rapids.

Rock Repelling—You’ll begin your Montana rappelling atop the famed Lookout Rock, where Meriwether Lewis once stood. After pausing for a moment to admire the stunning views, including the majestic Blackfoot River below, you’ll lower yourself by rope down the sheer 167-foot rock face. Of course, the resort has all the gear necessary to make your descent as safe and secure as it is thrilling, with well-trained Paws Up guides attending to your every need.

ATV Tour—Mount your own motor-powered all-terrain vehicle, and then scale mountains, slice through streams, power through brush, and even cruise through a ghost town. e backdrop is gorgeous, the pace is moderate, and the exhilaration is unforgettable.

ere are even more activities available to satisfy any adventure appetite. Take your best shot at a world-class sporting clays

course, take a guided hike, engage in some paintball, visit the historic (and best persevered boom town), Garnet Ghost Town, take a mountain bike ride, or try out the new Sky Line Aerial Adventure Park high-ropes course.

With all this activity, you’ll de nitely work up a rancher’s appetite. Paws Up o ers a variety of dining styles and fares. Trough Restaurant is a casual gathering place o ering breakfast and lunch and serving meals with a Western air. Home-cooked avors mingle with traditional o erings for a rustic, yet re ned palette. Not to miss are the locally picked huckleberry pancakes and house made cookies served daily. Pomp Restaurant o ers ne dining described as re ned rustic ranch, such as fresh Rocky Mountain trout sautéed with herbs and paired with an exquisite Napa Valley Chardonnay. Tank is a full service bar with roaring re, board games, and walls of windows for a spectacular view. Camp Dining is available if you are staying at one of the Safari camps. S’Mores are legendary at Paws Up, so gather round the replace at Tank or a re pit outside to learn how to make the perfect s’more from resident S’moreologist, Conor Dannis. As you reluctantly depart Paws Up, wishing you had had more time to “just be” there, you’ll notice the phrase “ e Last Best Place” inscribed on the wooden archway at the end of the drive. It was coined by William Kittredge, then a professor of creative writing at the University of Montana, in his 1988 book, e Last Best Place: A Montana Anthology. After a moment’s re ection, it makes perfect sense. In many ways, it does feel like “ e Last Best Place.”

SHERIDAN ROAD 74

HOME TOUR

Designer Leigh Dyer takes a freewheeling approach to a solidly classic home.

The kitchen’s not quite right. e family room is too small. And that spartan master bath needs the spa treatment. Few properties tick every box. ere’s always a little—and more often than not—a lot of work to be done before a house that has that special something is the place you’re proud to call home. at was certainly the case for one Winnetka couple. But with an imaginative assist from designer Leigh Dyer, the house they liked is now a home they love.

Clad in stone and sporting a French-in ected facade, the six-bedroom residence was built in 2008. Initially, its interiors reected a manor house look, elegant and restrained. Tasteful, but a tad formal. Not any more. “It’s still a traditional home,” says Dyer, “but we lightened it up.”

Dyer’s intervention is evident the minute one enters the foyer. With a 20-foot ceiling, the space could be overwhelmingly grand. But with an eye for color, pattern, and texture, she’s created an entryway that’s more engaging than intimidating. Benches upholstered in an eye-popping, pink and blue oral fabric from Matthew Williamson, are paired with a custom-designed console table covered in a deep blue vinyl. “ e idea,” explains Dyer, “is to let people know the minute they walk in that this is a fun, happy house.” at joie de vivre is everywhere in the home. In recon guring the kitchen, Dyer removed walls to open the space, and replaced the ornate cabinetry with more simple, paneled cupboards. She also added a pantry. But this isn’t any old larder. Positioned behind a sliding door, this handy, functional space is covered in a rich blue wallpaper with a silk-like texture from Elitis. “It is a little extravagant to wallpaper a pantry,” admits Dyer, “but my

SHERIDAN ROAD 75 OPPOSITE PAGE: Dining room ABOVE: Kitchen

HOME TOUR

client felt very strongly that since she’s in the kitchen making three meals a day, she needed some nice, feminine touches. at includes the mosaic backsplash, which has a lot of sparkle and prettiness to it.”

As Dyer’s color choices for the foyer and pantry indicate, her clients are fans of blue and white and the classic combo pervades the home, from the comfy upholstered chairs in the bright, white kitchen to the carpet and drapes in the family room. And when it came to the formal dining room, Dyer went all out. While the table rests on classically curved, Queen Anne legs and the chairs are Louis XVI, the room is anything but conventional. e blue and white rug that grounds the space reads like a cross between the night sky and the patterned skin of a whale shark. And the paper that lls the millwork panels on the wall is practically psychedelic. “I saw this wild, exotic wallpaper and decided to push my clients beyond their comfort zone,” shares Dyer. “ ey loved it and really got onboard with the idea that sometimes, going a little bit further than usual can have a maximum impact.”

In out tting the home, Dyer cast a wide net, sourcing rugs from Stark Carpet and furniture from Sawbridge Studios, and incorporating random resale shop nds, such as a bud vase in

the shape of a peacock. Custom pieces include a Lucite pedestal table in the family room. “ ere’s inexpensive acrylic, but this is the real deal,” says Dyer. “It’s very thick, very heavy. We waited three months for that baby. I think it’s a nice complement to the reading chair we’ve paired it with.” One of Dyer’s most eye-popping nds is a brightly-hued abstract canvas by artist Lindsay Cowles. “I follow her on Instagram,” relates Dyer. “ is was for sale and I looped the client in and we bought it within two hours. at really reveals the power of Instagram and how we are making purchases nowadays.”

While some of Dyer’s design choices were somewhat outside the box for a home that doesn’t swing contemporary, the fact that she had worked with the couple previously helped pave the way. “Plus,” notes Dyer, “I grew up in Winnetka. I am very well versed in traditional design. I get it; I get it through and through. But deep down, everyone wants to be unique. ey just have to have the con dence to make bold choices and to take those risks. I’m there to hold their hands and say, ‘You can do this, we can do this together.’”

“The minute you walk in, you get a feel of their personality,” reveals interior designer Carrie Savino of the Glencoe home of Kathy and Mike Paleczny she helped design.

Built in 2014, the custom home sits at the edge of the pristine greens of Skokie Country Club. Previously residing in Northbrook, where they raised their family, Kathy knew it was just o the grounds of the prestigious golf course where the couple, both avid golfers, would build their dream home. “We didn’t downsize, we funsized!” she says.

For Savino, the main challenge was how to allow the Paleczny’s interests—and many collections—to shine. “ e question was: how do we make these things look like they were meant to be there?” she shares. “For Kathy’s sand collection, we knocked out a speci c display area in the great room to make it a focal point, rather than an afterthought.”

is sand collection, collected from many family vacations— and even their daughter’s semester at sea—showcases everything from Hawaiian volcanic soil to sand from Hiroshima. Even friends of the family now participate in the fun, bringing samples back from their own travels.

Another of the home’s highlights is its penny oor, situated in the pantry. “When I mentioned the Roman and Williams-designed penny oor at the Standard Grill in New York, they loved the idea. I made the mockup, but Mr. Paleczny did all the work!”

In addition to Savino, the Palecnzys brought in Jim Malapanes of Homes by James; Vincent Baggetto, to create a “real cook’s kitchen,” complete with made-to-measure drawers for spices, utensils, and cookware; and architects Erick We ng and Ed Deegan. Special attention was paid to the property’s verdant landscaping, with Midwest Arbor bringing the vibrant greens of the golf course in.

A walk with WHIMSY

e Winnetka Club welcomes us into several unique homes across the North Shore for their 2018 Housewalk, including Kathy and Mike Paleczny’s refreshingly personal Glencoe residence.

Inside, the light- lled, airy space has an East Coast feel, with warm wood tones and plenty of texture, such as suede wallpaper and natural woven fabrics, and varying shades of blue and gray. ey sourced design elements from Jayson Home + Garden and Mitchell Gold, and fabrics from Cowtan & Tout. For lighting, Savino worked with Idlewood Electric, turning to Chadwick’s in Libertyville for the natural tile and stone.

“Our goal is to select homes that o er the attendees great design ideas,” shares Marla Bagan, Philanthropy Chair of the Winnetka Club, who will be showcasing the Paleczny home as part of their annual Housewalk. “From young families to empty nesters, these homes re ect how people in this part of the North Shore live.”

Since 1992, the Winnetka Club Housewalk, Lifestyles of the North Shore, has given us the opportunity to get an insider’s look into some of the area’s most interesting homes, all towards its mission of serving the community through philanthropy and volunteer service, promoting cultural and intellectual life.

Proceeds from the Housewalk and accompanying luncheon at the Winnetka Country Club, taking place this year on ursday, May 17, go to the Winnetka Club Scholarship for high school seniors who reside in New Trier Township, in the past having given as much as $40,000 to several amazing students. As a thank you, each participating homeowner is also given $500 to donate to the charity of their choice.

“Meeting and working with the homeowners is for me the best part of the event. We are so fortunate to live in such a vibrant and generous community,” Bagan shares. “I met Kathy last April and was so impressed with her and her home. Everyone will be talking about it at the luncheon—what amazing surprise details and whimsy!”

espite being the woman behind a thriving business, Graziela Gems founder and jewelry designer Graziela Kaufman nds true success in the balance of work, family, friends, philanthropy, and, oh yeah, a little bit of time for herself, too. “When I feel it’s all balanced, I feel successful,” she says. “My heart, mind and soul have to be ful lled.” As a self-described positive and determined person, Graziela takes calculated risks to get to the next level.

One such risk was moving to the United States after growing up in Brazil. She’d been visiting the United States since she was a child and then lived in New York for six months in her 20s and in England for one year. Both stints overlapped with the winter so, “ e cold weather wasn’t new for me,” she explains about eventually relocating to Chicago. But she does miss her family and tries to keep the Brazilian culture alive in her North Shore home (her family moved to the North Shore 13 years ago after living in the city for seven) through food and language. She also takes her family—husband John and sons Nelson (21), Johnny (17), Kevin (16), and Kristopher (15)—to Brazil at least once a year so her kids are able to consider the country as a second home.

Luckily, they all love to do the same things, despite having di erent personalities. “We love to watch movies or shows, play poker and board games, play charades after dinner, go to Ravinia in the summer, spend long days by the pool, take bike rides on the Green Bay Trail, and take the dogs and cats for a walk down to the beach close to our home,” Graziela says. “Yes, my cats walk on leashes.” An animal lover, Graziela has a rescue Bernese Mountain Dog, two Savannah felines, and her 12-year-old Yorkipoo.

Graziela met her husband 21 years ago in Fisher Island, where both of their parents had vacation homes. What she’ll say about their story is that it involved 16 trips to Brazil in seven months, a hurricane, an almost called-o wedding, and eventually an unforgettable dream wedding.

“My heart is half-American, half-Brazilian,” Graziela says. “I actually feel that having a Brazilian around was sometimes a bigger shock to the community than moving here was to me.” Much of Graziela’s aesthetic and inspiration today comes from Brazil, which is the largest producer of gemstones in the world. “It’s ingrained in my soul,” she says. “Colors, energy, movement, curves, sexy shapes, nature, breathtaking landscapes—I lived in a visual paradise. Growing up, my ‘backyard’ was a gemological treasure. My

DBrazilian ‘roots’ are evident in all of my designs.” Growing up, Graziela watched her grandfather Mario Barone, an Italian jeweler, make other’s dreams come true through design.

And now she’s doing the same, amassing quite the celebrity following with fans like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Hudson, Gigi Hadid, and 300 other celeb clients donning Graziela Gems. And even more than that, Graziela is making a profound impact in the community through her charitable contributions to make a di erence in the lives of homeless and abused animals.

She’s involved in several organizations that help rehabilitate animals of all sorts—like MCP Rescue and e Puppy Mill Project—and even donates a portion of her sales to help further that mission. “I believe that each of us is in this world to make a di erence and that we have to ght for what we believe in,” she says.

To that end, Graziela found a kindred spirit in actress Nikki Reed, who she met three years ago through their common love of animals. “We felt an immediate connection and decided to do something positive with it,” shares Graziela. “I designed a collection inspired by our planet, our animals, our oceans and by Nikki and Ian [Somerhalder, Nikki’s husband], where 60 percent of all the pro ts went to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.” e collection is sold only through Graziela’s website and features Nikki and Ian’s favorite gemstones: turquoise, jade, and jasper.

One of Graziela’s personal favorite gemstones is the Paraiba tourmaline. “From the time I saw it to this day, I have never seen anything like it,” she says. “It was discovered in Brazil, and it’s extremely rare. It’s so alive and electric that it’s mesmerizing.”

Graziela’s “Something Blue” collection has plenty of Paraiba gems that range from the Brazilian Paraiba, which is the rarest and most expensive of them all, to Mozambique Paraiba. e gems are only found in three places in the world and are very di cult to extract. Nevertheless, in 2017, Graziela decided every woman that purchases a piece of Graziela jewelry should have one to three Paraiba pavé stones encrusted somewhere in their piece, and she began adding them to their couture designs and necklaces. “My goal is to have every woman that buys one of my pieces feel as rare as the stone itself,” she explains.

But ultimately, Graziela doesn’t have a favorite collection, as every collection comes from her heart. “From the time I design a collection to when the collection is ready takes approximately three months,” she says. “So much time and e ort of our incredible team goes into the making of a piece of jewelry that sometimes I think we are all crazy, but when we nally see the nished product, it’s magical.”

FAIR PLAY SPOTLIGHT

What began as a fundraiser hosted in the Ryerson family backyard has grown to become one of the most treasured children’s events in Winnetka. Now organized by the Winnetka Community Nursery School, the Winnetka Children’s Fair strives to maintain the traditions from those early days and the magic that has kept it going strong since 1945.

“ e Fair was started 73 years ago and since has become a beloved tradition in Winnetka, bringing the children and community together at the end of the school year for a truly magical weekend at the Village Green,” share co-chairs Lizzie Kelley and Emily Rose. “What makes the Fair so unique and special is that it really hasn’t changed all that much over the many decades that it’s been in existence. We are still weighing tickets, watching our children light up as they play an arcade game or go down the giant slide, and all coming together to put on this weekend of good old-fashioned fun for the children.”

“It has always been an event put on by the community for the community and has become a favorite pastime among the kids,” they add. “ e Main Show may be gone (a production featuring local children), but everything else remains very much the same.”

Kelley and Rose, who both attended Greeley School and have known each other since kindergarten, remember looking forward to the Fair every year: “It’s wonderful to have it all come full circle and now be able to experience the joy of the Fair through the look on our children’s faces when they walk on the Village Green that Friday. It’s a tradition unique to this community and one we hope will continue for years to come.”

e Winnetka Children’s Fair’s corporate sponsors, such as the Winnetka branches of Coldwell Banker and @properties, play a vital role in ensuring that wish comes true through the generous nancial contributions and volunteers they provide. “It’s great to have our community partners come together each year and rollup their sleeves for two days to help create the special moments that only the Winnetka Children’s Fair has provided children for decades” says Rose.

“ is year we are excited to welcome new Platinum Level sponsors, including DV Trading, Shore Capital, e Grand, Ho mann Commercial Real Estate, and Ru olo Landscaping Inc. It truly takes a village to put on this event, and we could not do it without every single contributor, big and small,” she adds.

Last year’s attendees will be excited to learn that the petting zoo will be returning this year, alongside new favorites like the train—perfect for younger children— and the climbing wall. Including extended hours on Friday, organizers also have plans for a “dad band” in the works to provide music while families enjoy dinner on the Green.

Guests can also look forward to many other attractions sure to please children of all ages: rides, two giant slides, arcade games, in atables, face painting, and, of course, Kiddieland. And don’t forget the food! As in years past, there will be many delicious snacks—from cotton candy and snow cones to pizza and hot dogs, to name only a few.

Mark the uno cial beginning of summer—and the last day of school for Winnetka Public Schools—this June 8th and 9th with treats, games, and a day of outdoor fun on the Green.

Fair hours: Friday, June 8, 11 am – 7 pm; Saturday, June 9, 10 am –3 pm. Tickets are 50 cents and can be purchased in advance in $25, 50, 75 and 100 increments at local preschools or on the day of at the Fair. For more information, visit winnetkacommunitynurseryschool.org/ about-the-fair or call Lizzie Kelley at 312-882-0332.

Now in its 73rd year, the Winnetka Children’s Fair, put on by the Winnetka Community Nursery School, has become a summer tradition for kids of all ages. With support from hundreds of local volunteers and several area businesses, it is a magical day to remember.

Alyssa Rapp at home. Behind Rapp (in partial view) is an Erik Skoldberg painting.

A BALANCING ACT

Silicon Valley entrepreneur, CEO and civic leader Alyssa Rapp and her family return to her hometown of Winnetka with a brand-new gig and a full heart.

hile life in the 21st century seems overwhelming, Alyssa Rapp has found time to do it all. e Winnetka native, who spent the past 10 years as an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, has traded in mild California winters for a more well-rounded life in Winnetka.

It wasn’t until her father-in-law passed away in 2017 that she and her husband, Hal Morris, also a Chicago native, and their two young daughters, Audrey and Henriette, decided it was time to return home. With Rapp’s mother, Fay and stepfather, Daniel Levin, still based in Winnetka, and Morris’s mom based in Munster, Indiana, the timing was perfect.

“[My family] loves Winnetka,” says Rapp. “It’s a wonderful community on the North Shore, and it’s a wonderful place to raise children. e values are so solid, the schools are wonderful.”

Rapp attended New Trier High School, where she was a competitive gymnast, before earning her B.A. in Political Science and Art History at Yale University in 2000. ough she always had an interest in business, Rapp’s political in uence from her parents inspired her to work on Hillary Clinton’s campaign for her rst senate race and also serve as national nance director for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-9) after her undergrad.

“My parents are very political,” she says. “My mom was the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands under President Obama, and my stepfather is a real-estate developer in Chicago, who is known for his creation of the East Bank Club. He has also done an extraordinary amount of mixed-income housing and been a leader—a pioneer really—in the public housing world for the past 60 years.”

After two and a half years as Congresswoman Schakowsky’snance director and six months traveling in Australia and New Zealand, Rapp packed up for California, where she earned her M.B.A. at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Here, Rapp met her husband and founded her rst startup: Bottlenotes, Inc., the leading interactive media company in the U.S. wine industry, which she sold in 2015. Rapp also founded AJR Ventures, a rm providing strategic advisory services to companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500’s in the technology, beverage and luxury goods categories, which she still assists with today.

Yet it’s her most recent career move in Chicago that has her revving up her entrepreneurial engine yet again.

In late 2017, Rapp was appointed CEO of Surgical Solutions, LLC., a private equity-backed rm in the healthcare space owned

Wby Chicago-based private equity rm, Sterling Partners. Like a true entrepreneur, Rapp is excited to learn, grow and be challenged in an unfamiliar space.

“I love starting companies; it’s fun, challenging and creative,” she says. And when it comes to the Chicago startup scene, Rapp sings nothing but praises. “It’s not as ashy of a brand of entrepreneurship as it is on the West Coast, and in some ways, it’s more substance-based. It’s just a slightly smaller pond with the same values but without the pretension.”

However, her ties to California aren’t fully severed. In 2014, Rapp began teaching a course annually at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business called Global Dynamics of the Wine Industry, which focuses on the management of global wine businesses and the economic, regulatory, and market trends of the industry.

“ is class has been a wonderful way to stay connected and to get to share a decade of knowledge and transfer it back,” she says, citing her experience at Bottlenotes, Inc., which received the “People’s Choice Award” at the Empact Showcase in the U.N. for the top 100 companies with founders under 25. Rapp was named as one of Inc. Magazine’s “30 Under 30” coolest entrepreneurs in America and is consistently named one of the wine industry’s top 100 most in uential people by intowine.com.

Equally as important as her business ventures is her civic work, which was inspired by her parents at a young age.

“Even though I’m an entrepreneur and an executive by day, I’m on the board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA),” she says. Rapp also serves on two other boards: Spark, a national nonpro t that creates life-changing mentorships for middle schoolers, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Chicago’s own contemporary dance company.

“I love both teaching and the board service work I do,” she says. “It’s a lot of work and time, and the reason I do it in addition to a CEO job and being a wife and a mother, is because I grew up in a family where giving back and a life of service mattered. My parents are extraordinary leaders in the community, and they set this value system of service and hard work.”

Rapp may be a multi-hyphenate, with titles such as: entrepreneur, businesswoman, startup founder, CEO, civic leader, author, professor, mother, and wife, but it’s her humble attitude and self-motivation that has made her so successful.

“Everything requires extraordinary amounts of hard work; nothing is easy,” she says. “My husband, when I was in the most challenging parts of my entrepreneurial life the rst time around, would constantly remind me that until it’s the ninth inning and the third out, keep swinging. As we’ve seen with our own Chicago Cubs, you never know what can happen.”

TRUE to his WORD

Neuropsychologist-turned-entrepreneur Dr. Richard Chaifetz talks about his life in Lake Forest, the importance of giving back and what he attributes to his success.

As a pre-med student at Saint Louis University, Dr. Richard Chaifetz knew he would be successful early on.

“I always had an entrepreneurial drive, I was always doing things to make money and looking at ways to make money,” Chaifetz says. “It was something I knew I would combine with my interest and passion of psychology and psychiatry.”

Yet the Long Island native’s path to the Midwest was by happenstance. Chaifetz, the oldest of four kids who grew up on his single mother’s teacher’s salary, attended Eastern Military Academy, an ROTC high school in Long Island and was a top student whose leadership rankings and high grades landed him a spot at West Point Military Academy. Opting out of a military future, his mentor suggested he and another student attend Saint Louis University. A great pre-med program, his mentor’s guidance, and a chance to study at a well-known university sold him.

Second semester his freshman year, Chaifetz was alerted that

his tuition hadn’t been paid.

“I said to the president of the university, ‘I’m a good student, I’m committed and I want to stay,’” recalls Chaifetz. “‘I know I’m going to be successful, and if you let me stay, I will pay back the school in a big way in the future.’”

Believing in him, the president let him stay and work to pay back his tuition. After Chaifetz graduated magna cum laude from SLU with a degree in psychology, he earned his doctorate at Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 1981.

After receiving his doctorate, he used the little money he had to open up a psych center, hoping to eventually franchise them throughout the country. He went on to open up more than a dozen psych centers throughout the Midwest that helped treat a myriad of mental health issues. Yet, when the market changed from direct insurance reimbursement to an HMO model, Chaifetz changed the direction of his business, sold all of his psych centers and founded ComPsych Corporation in 1984, an employee assistance program that provided psychological services directly to employers. Now, as the largest employee assistance program in

the world, Chicago-based ComPsych operates in 160 countries with 45,000 customers and serves over 100 million people.

e neuropsychologist-turned-entrepreneur didn’t end his business ventures with ComPsych, where he remains Founder, Chairman, and CEO. In 2011, he founded the Chaifetz Group, a private investment rm serving early stage and middle-market companies.

Despite his East Coast upbringing, Chaifetz’s business roots in Chicago kept him here. As a side project when he was single and living in the city, he began building a house in Lake Forest as he liked the area.

“ en I met my wife, Jill,” he says, who lived in another suburb at the time. “I liked Lake Forest, so we bought another home, not the one I built. Lake Forest is a beautiful community. We live on the lake, the schools are great, and it’s a great place to raise a family.”

He and Jill currently live in the house they bought together on the lake in Lake Forest. ey have two kids: a daughter, who followed in her father’s footsteps as a neuropsychologist, and a son, who works at ComPsych as well as for the Chaifetz Group.

Over the years, Chaifetz and his wife, a Miami University alum, had conversations about the right time to give back to the school that provided so much for him: Saint Louis University. In 2007, they decided the time was right to approach the school about giving back. After talks with the university’s leadership at the time, Chaifetz found the perfect t by giving $12 million to build a new athletic arena for the school. In turn, he got naming rights for the facility.

“I explained to the [president] my passion for sports and how, having no money as a student, I took my dates to the basketball and hockey games and other sporting activities,” he says. “I thought that would be a great way to honor the school and give back.”

Chaifetz Arena is currently ranked the number-one arena in the world for under 15,000 seats, in addition to being a community gym and housing the school’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams.

Since then, Chaifetz’s involvement has grown with the school. He’s on SLU’s Board of Trustees and was a co-chair of the

school’s development campaign. As co-chair, he knew he had to do something more for the school, and when the naming rights were available for the business school, Chaifetz decided the time was right, once again, to donate.

In February 2018, Chaifetz and his wife donated $15 million to the University’s business school, bumping their total contributions to SLU to $27 million. E ective immediately, the business school was renamed the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business and the school’s entrepreneurship center renamed the Chaifetz Center for Entrepreneurship.

“I jumped on it because business and sports are my passions,” he says. “Being able to make a significant contribution to the business school in perpetuity and the Center for Entrepreneurship is right up my alley and allows me to get involved in helping the school grow its programs and elevate its stature. I want to help attract the best and brightest faculty and students.”

Chaifetz and his wife serve on a number of other boards, including e Field Museum of Natural History, the Miami University Foundation Board, the Brain Research Foundation, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, and the TCS Education System, among other organizations.

Having grown from a struggling college student to a neuropsychologist to an entrepreneur, the question remains: did Chaifetz know he’d grow to this level of success?

“I knew I would do well; I knew I was ambitious, motivated, reasonably smart, driven and have business sense,” he says. “I knew with those qualities I’d do well for myself, but never to the extent of course that I did.”

True to his word, Chaifetz’s generous contributions and dedication to the institutions that have helped him along the way are a testament to his business sense, but mostly his character.

“If you feel strongly about something despite the obstacles you may face through the naysayers and the negative opinions and the questionable views, go and do it because you’ll probably be right,” he says. “Great leaders in the world and the people who make a di erence are the ones who don’t follow what everybody else says.”

From a student struggling to pay tuition to one of Chicago’s most successful—and charitable—entrepreneurs, Chaifetz is de nitely onto something.

Magic Ball Camp Kesem

This year’s annual Magic Ball welcomed more than 600 people to support Camp Kesem, a nationwide community founded in 2000 and driven by passionate college student leaders that support children through and beyond their parent’s cancer. Guests enjoyed cocktails and nibbles before sitting down to dinner and moving presentations by Kesem staff and alumni. Best selling author, cancer survivor, and Kesem parent, Kelly Corrigan, delivered a powerful keynote, and moving video featuring the Rusch-Egwuonwu family that helped set the mood for a rousing paddle raise auction. The evening raised a total of $1.2 million to support Kesem’s work and goal of supporting every child who needs and deserves its services. campkesem.org

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT

Hyde Park Day School’s Annual Gala builds a community of opportunity and hope year after year. is month, expect an evening of fundraising and fun at this Nautical Night Out on the lake.

“Hyde Park Day School serves children of average-to-superior intelligence with learning disabilities,” explains Dr. Casey Crnich, HPDS’s Executive Director. “In addition to serving a very speci c population, we are somewhat unique in that we are a transition school. We give our students the tools and strategies they need to compensate for their learning disabilities, then work toward transitioning them back to a school in their home community.”

Founded in Hyde Park in 2000, with an additional campus added in North eld in 2004, the organization is excited to announce a third campus located in Lemont, Illinois, slated to open its doors this August. is expansion is a testament to the level of excellence the school continues to demonstrate, the devotion of current and former parents, community support, and the natural evolution of its strategic plan to serve more children with learning disabilities.

One of its largest fundraising e orts is the school’s Annual Gala, which has been held for the past decade. is spring event brings together the school community in support of the Bright Futures Scholarship Fund, which provides nancial aid to students whose family means would otherwise not allow them to access the school’s specialized services.

“We believe that nancial ability should not prohibit bright students with learning disabilities the opportunity to receive an innovative and comprehensive education. HPDS’s Bright Futures Scholarship Fund provides nancial assistance to children in order to attend our school. Nearly one-third of our students receive some type of nancial assistance to attend Hyde Park Day School. Since its beginning in 2004, the Bright Futures Scholarship Fund has awarded over $3.15 million dollars to approximately 222 students,” says Crnich, adding, “Our goal for this year’s Gala is to achieve a net pro t of $225,000.”

For Gala co-chairs, Katie Burnside and Vanya Weglarz, both current HPDS parents, the mission is understandably personal. “Our 11-year-old daughter is a sixth grader at HPDS in Hyde Park. is is her second year at the school and she is thriving,” shares Weglarz. “ e teachers are experts in teaching to the style of each child.

ey also have a unique way of helping your child understand what their challenges are and how to advocate for themselves.”

She continues: “I feel so fortunate to have a school like this in the Chicago area, and when I was asked to co-chair the Gala this year, I was very excited to help give back to this wonderful school. I feel that it is imperative that all children who are in need of this type of education have access to it—the Bright Futures Scholarship Fund allows for this. It is wonderful to be involved and give back to something that has given so much to me and my family.”

Burnside echoes this: “My oldest daughter has learning disabilities, and we spent the rst three years of her primary education looking for the right educational t for her. I can con dently say that what Hyde Park Day School (North eld campus) o ers for children with learning disabilities is life-changing. My daughter has gained con dence and is constantly learning and growing. “

“I don’t think that I’m alone when it comes to parents who’ve faced challenges in traditional settings for kids with learning differences. We count ourselves so fortunate to have found a miracle school such as this one and to have been blessed with the sta and leadership that work there. ere is no other organization that I’d rather lend my time to and raise money for.”

e two hard-working chairs shared the details for this year’s much-anticipated event on Friday, May 18: “ is year’s Gala will take place at the newly-renovated eater on the Lake in Lincoln Park. is exciting location boasts views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. A nautical theme seemed like a natural choice! Weather permitting, guests will have access to a lakefront patio where they can enjoy a cocktail and take in the amazing views—there is no other space in the city quite like this one.”

Guests can expect a sit-down dinner with auction items in keeping with the nautical waterfront theme, including a one-week stay at a lakefront home in Union Pier, a sunset cruise for six on a motor yacht on Lake Michigan, and other amazing travel packages.

Ticket prices range from $225 for individual tickets to $5,000 for Platinum Table of 10. For more information, visit hydeparkday.org.

EXTRAORDINARY MICHIGAN AVENUE CONDOMINIUM RESIDENCES

UPCYCLED CHIC

Shop Melee is a full-service consignment and sale company that can help you recycle well-loved products for others.

Almost two decades ago, Louise Juckniess started a small consignment business out of her home. It all began with her own collection of high-end shoes, purses, and collectibles that her family had owned and loved over the years. ey were still in excellent condition, but she didn’t need them anymore, so she decided to re-sell them.

e business started to grow over time, and six years ago, Juckniess partnered with Kim Williams and founded Shop Melee, a full-service consignment and estate sale services company. Shop Melee spans the entire consignment platform, accepting a large assortment of items for consignment at its Willowbrook location for both sale online and in the warehouse, and hosting

estate sales in clients’ homes. Shop Melee’s 12,000-square-foot warehouse in Willowbrook is also open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, for drop-o s and warehouse home goods shopping. And last but not least, Shop Melee has an inventory of close to 40,000 items for sale online, which you can check out at shopmelee.com and shophautespot.com.

“We have everything from contemporary clothing brands to couture and collectibles online, and sell household items and furniture in the warehouse and in people’s homes,” Juckniess says. e business has largely grown by word of mouth. A client often starts as a customer: e person buys something from Shop Melee and ends up selling with them later. Not all clients and customers are local; Shop Melee receives consignment items from all over the country, and ships all over the U.S. and globally as well.

“People who work with us have a variety of needs, whether clients are downsizing, simplifying, moving, redecorating, becoming empty-nesters, or just cleaning out a closet," Williams says. “We have completely rede ned the concept of consignment services. Consigning online or having Shop Melee host and estate sale allows anyone to simplify and recycle by choosing our services."

e process is fairly simple for people who want to consign with Shop Melee. Locally, clients can drop o items for consignment consideration, Monday through Friday while the warehouse is open. Online, they look for authentic, contemporary, head-totoe fashions and accessories as well as Google-searchable collectibles. For the warehouse, Shop Melee accepts items that can be carried with two hands that are in nice condition, and they accept pre-approved items from out-of-state customers by providing prepaid shipping labels.

“We want to provide a mutually bene cial experience,” Williams says. “We like to set realistic expectations. I want to put online and in the warehouse what’s going to sell and that’s based on a number of factors. Styles and trends come and go, but we are willing to hang onto items for up to a year to give them a fair chance to sell."

e average shopper has become much more savvy, Williams says, especially in the era of online retail. “Buyers want a good price and they want good quality, whether buying new or used,” she explains. If you’re a customer looking to consign with Shop Melee, Williams says to ask yourself if you were to order the items online, would you be excited to receive them in the mail? If so, it’s likely someone else will as well.

When Juckniess started her business, she had no way to anticipate the trends, but consignment has remained a popular option for people who have high-quality, valuable items that they don’t have a use for anymore. Consignment is a socially and scally smart choice.

“We’re able to recycle your previously loved items. And if you spend a lot of money on something, you probably want to get something back for it,” she says.

e spring season is a popular time for Shop Melee as the real estate marketing is back in full force and closet cleaning is all the rage. Right now, the big trends include Mid-Century modern and contemporary decor, kitschy collectibles, colorful accessories, fringe, orals, and dark denim. If you have any of these items, call or stop by the o ce.

“We handle everything from A to Z,” Williams adds.

Shop Melee is located at 16W231 S. Frontage Road, Suite 10, in Willowbrook, 855-494-0004, shopmelee.com.

DEDICATED TO DESIGN

Construction has always inspired Karl Todd, who has applied his artistic background to the industry for 50 years, in the process realizing it was creating stunning yet purpose-driven kitchens and baths— and working with customers from conceptual design to end product—that he had a particular a nity for.

For over a decade, he has brought his wealth of knowledge and years of experience to North Shore Kitchen & Bath Center, Inc. (NSKB), a staple in the community and go-to resource for specialized design on the North Shore for 42 years. Since taking the reins as president and owner, Todd has transformed NSKB into a design and build company specializing in stylish kitchens and bathrooms across the Shore.

Since 2017, NSKB has called 1900 Willow Road in North eld home, a much larger facility more suited to his growing customer base. In just sixth months, Todd transformed the bare bones space into a brand new showroom that illustrates not only his team’s artistry but the functionality of their designs.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate their dedication to the community, this month will be the o cial grand opening of their stunning new showroom designed with lifestyle displays so that customers—homeowners and designers alike—can experience exactly what these new surroundings would look and feel like, be it cabinetry, lighting, xtures, ooring, tile, or countertops. All are invited to the festivities from 4 to 7 pm on ursday, May 17.

ere you’ll meet the close-knit NSKB team consisting of Todd, his wife, Barbara, and two professional designers, Diana Jones and Andrea Kazarian—a combined 80 years of industry experience altogether. Both Jones and Kazarian share: “We all support one another and love what we do—and that re ects in our work.”

From young families to empty nesters and everything in between, Todd and his team make the process a pleasant one: “ e

key to any process is to keep it simple. We are able to provide customers with architectural and engineering services and all necessary product selections at one location—and all customer contact remains with the designer from rst concept until the completion of the project. Communication is key,” he explains.

At NSKB, no project is too big or too small, whether it is a whole house renovation or a small powder room or even replacing a hinge—from minor adjustments to major overhauls: “What makes NSKB di erent,” Todd says, “is that we are a small organization that has the capabilities of a large company but remains personal from start to nish.”

“ ey transformed our old kitchen into a great one with a superb design plan,” one client relates. “ e cost was according to their estimate, and their subcontractors were highly skilled and professional. e end result was even better than expected. ey are up front, honest, reliable, and trustworthy.”

“We get to know our clients through our process—they become like family,” Todd shares. “And the majority are repeats customers. We have some homeowners we’ve done three or four di erent projects for over the years. So much of our business is word of mouth and referrals from satis ed customers.”

One such customer shares: “I would not think of using a di erent company ever again. Beyond professional, courteous, and caring. Whatever project you are considering, visit this company rst.”

“We’ve done everything from $35,000 kitchens to $250,000 renovations,” says Todd. “We create our concepts to t the customer’s budget and lifestyle, tailor everything to their needs—no two clients are alike and no two projects are alike. We don’t just sell product, we sell design. We create kitchens and baths for the way that clients live their lives.”

Plastic Surgery Update: Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia or over development of the male breast is a common condition. Some studies indicate that the incidence may be as high as 25 percent. It may be the result of heredity, disease or the use of certain drugs. For many it begins in puberty. If the case is mild it may well disappear on its own. For more signi cant cases surgery is usually indicated.

Gynecomastia can cause signi cant emotional problems and impair one’s self-con dence. Often it causes the male to avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to avoid exposing their embarrassment.

In general, gynecomastia can surgically be treated by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and/or skin. More mild cases can often be successfully treated non-invasively with either Coolsculpt or Liposonix. Both of these technologies destroy some of the underlying fat in a targeted fashion.

For larger cases, liposuction or open surgical intervention is required. Liposuction techniques have advanced to the point that most cases can be treated this way. Newer techniques using Laser Assisted Liposuction or Ultrasound Assisted Laser help to tighten the overlying skin, avoiding large incisions. In the case of more glandular tissue this can often be removed through the same liposuction incision with instruments that can grind up the glandular tissue so that it too can be suctioned out.

e procedure is usually performed under light sedation on an outpatient basis.

Risks and complications are usually mild but, like any procedure, may involve contour irregularities and bleeding. Occasionally other procedures may involve nipple reduction or areola reduction. is may be done either at the same time or as a secondary procedure.

I have found over the years that these patients tend to be some of the most grateful. For many it gives them the self-con dence to enjoy their bodies and participate in activities that they were reluctant to before.

MARKET SHARES

is July, leading middle market dealmakers will tee o at the Middle Market Open Tournament, raising nearly $6 million since the event’s inauguration in 2005 to support the life-saving programs of the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois. With BRADLEY SCHMARAK at the helm, this day of rstrate golf is sure to be a success.

“The Middle Market Open is a great example of the way Chicago’s business and civic leaders have come forward to improve our communities and the lives of their residents,” shares Bradley Schmarak, co-head of Reed Smith’s global private equity practice, now in his third year of chairing this unparalleled day of golf, networking, and philanthropy.

In 2005, Chicago investment banker Scott Lang had the idea for a golf tournament focusing on the private equity community to bene t the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois (NKFI), and the Middle Market Open was born: “Chicago has an entire ecosystem developed around private equity,” Schmarak explains. is year’s 14th annual tournament is expecting to host 450 golfers from over 200 business organizations at the prestigious Shoreacres, Conway Farms Golf Club, and Onwentsia Club— these hard to access private clubs are the perfect backdrop for this philanthropic tournament.

“ e tournament would not be a success without the dedication of our hardworking board comprised of 34 busy and accomplished professionals in the Chicago private equity and deal community— each of whom has committed a full year of planning, organizing, and executing the tournament,” notes Schmarak.

Check-in and tee-o s begin in the morning, with food and activities taking place throughout the day. e tournament culminates with a celebration at Onwentsia. is evening event includes everything from food and cocktails to cigar-rolling, great giveaways, and a silent auction of foursomes at many of the top 100 courses in the world. Tournament winners are also announced at this time in a special awards ceremony.

Schmarak, a Glencoe resident for the past 23 years, anticipates this year’s Open to raise between $800,000 and $1 million for NKFI. “It’s a phenomenal organization with fantastic leadership,” he says, a nod to the foundation’s CEO, Anne Black, who has been a key component of the tournament for the past 14 years.

“ e Open has allowed us, through the millions of dollars it has raised, to provide critical patient programming and launch our kidney mobile,” Black shares. “Since 2006, we have been able to provide free education and health screenings for over 53,000 individuals across the state for kidney disease and its two leading causes: high blood pressure and diabetes. Our goal is to help catch the disease early before dialysis or transplants are needed.” is October, the foundation will be honoring Schmarak with the Harold and Molly Schwartz Founders award at their annual Gift of Life Gala for his dedication to the cause, which is just one of his many charitable pursuits: “Reed Smith has been very supportive of my pro-bono and philanthropic endeavors,” he shares. is includes serving on the Board of Trustees of Ravinia, leading the pro-bono work for PGA champion Jason Day’s Brighter Days Foundation and for Sean’s Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization, as well as working with a Grammy Award-winning country artist and his wife, to plan a Nashville event for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Undoubtedly driven by a desire to give back, Schmarak declares: “It is among the most ful lling and gratifying work that I do.”
