CAREER COACHING: YOUR CHILD. THEIR SUCCESS.

Jody Michael Associates has been helping clients achieve professional and personal goals since 1997. In this edition, CEO Jody Michael talks about helping your child increase their probability for success and fulfillment.

When it comes to their child’s future, where do you feel parents often miss the mark?

Not realizing how important identifying the right career fit is for future happiness. Seventy percent of adults today are disengaged in their work and it has become one of our biggest pain points. When you’re stuck in a job that doesn’t align with your talents, aptitudes, and interests, it contributes to a sense of hopelessness and inertia, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression. These are problems that can be avoided by identifying the right career fit early, together with a career coach.

What is the best way for a parent to help develop their child’s career?

Parents are typically either too involved or not involved enough. Both ends of the spectrum are undesirable. If a parent is too involved, it can lead to a myriad of issues; transference of the parent’s values, opinions over what “fits” the child, and confirmation bias. The child often responds with resistance, anxiety, avoidance, or apathy.

Parents who aren’t involved enough generally have underlying beliefs like “it will all turn out fine, they’re too young to know”, “I didn’t know at their age”, or “they’ll figure it out in due time.” Unfortunately, many of those kids will be living in their parents basement, unemployed.

The saddest part is that most parents are woefully uninformed. They are placated by well-intended high school or college career counselors. Even at the best of schools, the counselors lack the time, resources, processes, and often the experience to deeply serve the child well. In our experience, it takes three months of individualized weekly work sessions to facilitate a comprehensive, reliable, and accurate answer to the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

What are the biggest fears or concerns you hear most from parents?

They are afraid their children won’t find success or be happy in life. They’re afraid that their children will make the same mistakes that they did. They’re afraid the world has become so disruptive that whatever they

choose won’t serve them well in the long run because…well, there is no long-run anymore. Things are changing too fast.

In regards to career coaching, they’re afraid that it will overwhelm their child. On top of anxiety about testing, getting into the right school and fitting into the right peer group –now they’re also tasked with identifying their right career. They’re worried that this new endeavor will increase their child’s anxiety. However, when introduced to a step-by-step process and with the hand-holding of an experienced coach, it actually decreases anxiety.

How does career coaching for students work?

As a student, your child is likely lacking the life experience, work experience, and self-awareness to identify their true innate aptitudes and abilities on their own, so we recommend taking an aptitude test. Two of the best are the Highlands Ability Battery (which we use at Jody Michael Associates) and Johnson O’Connor; both have very high reliability. A certified career coach will walk your child through the results in order to fully understand them and how they can be best applied to career choice.

Working with a career coach can dramatically accelerate the career discovery process and significantly increase accuracy in identifying their best career fit. In a one-on-one setting, a coach gets to know your child and their history, life and work experiences, interests, values, goals, challenges, concerns, and perceptions.

A coach can help your child gain greater self-awareness and consider different career options — including some they may not have even been aware of — in new and important ways. With a coach’s keen insights, your child will be able to better synthesize a wide range of information, including their interests, values, and talents — integrating any aptitude test results — to discover their best career fit.

If a child is still in high school, is it too early to have this conversation?

No. More than 40 percent of students don’t make it to college graduation within six years. If they have a clearer idea of their best career fit before college — or early enough in college

— they’ll be more focused and better able to optimize their tuition dollars by registering for the courses that satisfy the requirements for their intended major. Lacking this early insight, many students find it difficult to declare a major with confidence. In fact, a study shows that 24 percent of college students changed their major at least once before graduating. Many simply miss the mark when it comes to selecting an area of study that is a good fit for their aptitudes and that will sustain their interests.

What if a child already knows

they want to be?

what

As a parent, it’s easy to get swayed when you see your child so passionate about something they feel is so right. Sometimes, however (and more often than you’d think), their passion doesn’t align with their talents and abilities. Many people, including adults, have an unrealistic view of what various professions truly entail. It’s one thing to enjoy an activity as a hobby or extracurricular activity, but quite another to make it a career choice. That’s why it’s so important to do the research first.

Some people might think...“I’m already paying for college, now I have to pay a career coach too?”

Seeking the professional guidance of a qualified career coach is one of the greatest investments you can make in your child’s professional satisfaction and success. Some parents balk at the extra expense, but when you consider that most parents spend between $50,000 and $100,000 on their child’s education, career coaching can help ensure that your tuition dollars are being prudently spent.

A new graduate is struggling to find a job, what should they do?

First, make sure they have a quality resume. The rules of the resume game have changed since the dawn of the digital era. Today, many employers electronically scan resumes before an actual human ever sees them; only those resumes with targeted keywords make it to the next step. We recommend that clients work with a professional resume writer who has indepth knowledge of this process and who can optimize your child’s resume accordingly.

Second, polish their interview skills. It’s the interview that ultimately determines whether or not they receive a job offer. The importance of preparedness cannot be overstated. Suggest that they research the company and its competitors, and encourage your child to practice their responses to a variety of typical interview questions. One of the best ways to prepare for a real interview is to schedule a mock interview with a certified career coach. Assuming the role of interviewer, a coach can conduct a simulated interview and provide your child with objective feedback to help them significantly improve both verbal and nonverbal skills.

Your Child’s Future Is Too Important To Leave To Chance.

The earlier you help your child explore their talents, aptitudes, interests, and values — and identify their best career fit — the more confidence they’ll gain, the more focused they will become, and the less stress, frustration, and anxiety they will experience.

Contact us today at (773) 275-5566 to discuss how we can help your child experience future success and happiness.

FREEDOM STANDS

North Shore teens establish first Selah Freedom Junior Advisory Board to help victims of domestic sex trafficking.

Along the North Shore, teens from four high schools are learning to flex their philanthropic muscles at a young age. What may come as a shock to many is that Chicago is in the country’s top five cities for sex trafficking, and that up to 24,000 girls and women are victimized by this crime each year in our own communities.

Rather than let this staggering statistic frighten and restrict them, a caring and brave group of North Shore high school students decided to do something to help young female survivors find a path to recovery. With the help and guidance of their parents and representatives from Selah Freedom, these teens formed the first of its kind Selah Freedom Junior Advisory Board, affectionately known as the JAB, last fall.

Selah Freedom is a national organization with the mission to end sex trafficking and bring freedom to the exploited through four strong programs: Awareness, Prevention, Outreach, and Residential. In 2016, Selah Freedom opened its first residential safe house in Chicago.

“The thing that shocked me is that this is happening everywhere in the United States,” says Amanda Davidson, a junior at Loyola Academy and co-chair of the JAB with her sister, Kylie. Amanda first became aware of the sex trafficking epidemic after reading the book Redeeming Love, by Francine Rivers, at summer camp in 2016. The historical fiction novel depicts a young woman’s journey from being sold into prostitution to finding faith and the ability to love again.

“It was such a beautiful story,” she notes.

“I didn’t realize that sexual abuse is the main reason these girls enter a life of prostitution,” says sister Kiley. “Selah Freedom helped me realize it’s not the path they want, that they’ve been coerced into this life. I was astounded to learn how bad their situation really is and

how many youth and adults don’t understand it.”

During the summer of 2016, the girls’ mother, Jennifer Davidson, became aware of the organization Selah Freedom from two different acquaintances. Soon after, she and her daughters joined about 100 other volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to rehab a safe house outside of Chicago for young women seeking a better life with the help of Selah Freedom.

Rehabbing the house was just a start for the Davidson girls and other teens who were moved by Selah Freedom’s work and joined the effort to help. They held bake sales at Loyola and New Trier high schools, organized a coat drive, and collected sample size personal items to create personal care kits for the Outreach program. These kits are distributed to girls still on the street to create awareness about the help available with Selah Freedom. The teens also created their signature Bee Free necklace and made 300 pieces of jewelry, which they sold at the Kenilworth Assembly Holiday Fair, raising more than $1,500. The JAB has raised another $2,000 through its membership dues and personal donations. All proceeds raised by the teens benefit Selah Freedom.

Current members are students from New Trier High School, Loyola Academy, North Shore Country Day, and Woodlands Academy. The JAB is a way for youth, ages 15-18, to learn about domestic sex trafficking and gain hands-on experience in fundraising, volunteerism, program development, education, and awareness within the Selah Freedom community.

“This is often labeled as a third world problem, but it’s happening right here,” says Grace Mangel, a sophomore at New Trier and founding member of the JAB, in charge of special events. Grace first got involved with Selah Freedom when she was looking for a project for her Girl Scout Gold project (the equivalent to an Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts). “I did some research, contacted the CEO of Selah Freedom and asked how I could get involved,” she explains.

“This experience changed me,” adds Mangel. “You never know someone until you’ve walked a day in their shoes. These girls are so inspiring and positive.”

“I never thought I’d be able to do something like this and help so many girls,” says Kiley, who was instrumental in spearheading the establishment of the JAB. “Last month, the JAB held its first fundraiser, a Bee Free Tea to help raise awareness and funds, and to recruit new members,” she explains.

We have a feeling the JAB members are just getting started.

WHAT YOUR

INNER BEAUTY W

hen a client comes to Perlis Wellness Center in Lake Bluff asking about Botox or another aesthetic procedure to improve appearance or how they feel about the way they look, the response that comes with the consultation always goes beyond a single solution.

Dr. Cheryl Perlis, a board-certified physician who specializes in natural hormonal therapy, brain and body biochemistry, and aesthetic procedures, knows that beauty comes from inside out. While Botox or dermal fillers might immediately improve appearance, she knows that aging comes with other challenges that—when treated with an integrated, holistic approach—can be addressed in life changing ways.

“My thoughts are first, how can I help them feel better with their looks,” explains Perlis, who has been in private practice since 1990. “I talk to them about why they may look tired and their skin is dry and thin because they are losing their hormones, or their under eyes are puffy from allergies to gluten or dairy or an untreated thyroid issue.”

Whether the client is a woman or a man, the approach is always the same. Dr. Perlis looks at them as “a whole person,” treating not only requests for cosmetic improvements but also diet, hormone therapies, and overall wellbeing.

“For example, I know that if they use hormones, their fillers and Botox will last longer,” she explains. “As we age, we lose bone, fat, collagen, and have less elasticity in our skin. They are beginning to feel less attractive, and often are beginning to gain weight. Most women complain of feeling tired and not as happy. They feel old, and often they are less motivated.”

A big focus of Dr. Perlis’ work is on the brain and how the brain controls behaviors that determine the quality of our health. “So many of our life decisions are determined by how our brain works,” she says. “People make major decisions, such as career changes, based on how our brains are wired.”

While she has been a doctor for 29 years, Dr. Perlis says it’s been her more holistic focus over the last decade that has brought the most rewards for both her and the men and women she serves.

“What I see is that patients want to be heard,” she explains. “They are looking for help from their physicians, but often they are caught in a medical system that places everyone into the same protocol.”

With an individual approach, Dr. Perlis customizes programs for patients that goes beyond cosmetic procedures. She has learned from experience that the same treatment approaches do not work for everyone.

“As part of this ongoing training, I have learned new advanced injection techniques from attending conferences all over the country—which has taught me to give my cosmetic patients a natural, refreshed look,” adds Dr. Perlis, whose personal experience with a bout of Bell’s palsy during her pregnancy and her own struggle with hormone imbalance has shaped her areas of specialization. “People want to leave the office with minimal to no down time. They want to meet their friends for dinner without anyone even knowing that they had something done but everyone commenting how amazing they look.”

That is what she describes as her “best kept secret.”

“Only your doctor knows what you did at your lunchtime break,” she says. “For me, I want my patients to know that I truly care about them. Knowing about their family life or career makes me better able to help them reach their personal and professional goals.”

Going beyond the aesthetic life enhancements, Dr. Perlis says the treatment she gives patients improves their overall wellbeing. From better sleep habits to hormone therapy to taking the steps toward a healthy diet or finding alternatives to antidepressants if possible, the results she has seen at her practice over the last decade have been life changing for her patients—especially women.

“Because women are living longer, they are remaining active in their careers and their lives. They want to look and feel as great,” she says. “Some woman are in great shape but they have a long history of sun damage and have not been doing Botox or fillers, so they appear a lot older then they feel. Everyone makes their first impression in the first 20 seconds they meet someone, so why not look as great as you feel?”

Getty Museum,

“Ithought we could take this interview to the galleries and look at the paintings while we talk,” suggests Gloria Groom, Chair of European Painting and Sculpture and David and Mary Winton Green Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC). I am here to discuss her latest show Manet and Modern Beauty. Her “in-person” style comes as no surprise when considering her public exhibitions of the past. Museum-goers have experienced a re-creation of Van Gogh’s bedroom to accompany paintings of the same setting and walked on green turf flooring with the sound of chirping birds playing to evoke the outdoors of Monet’s Luncheon On The Grass Such is the joie de vivre that has earned Groom’s curatorial creativity raves at home and abroad. No wonder it was Groom who received one of the first calls from a J. Paul Getty Museum colleague shortly after

the auction hammer went down in 2014, and the Los Angeles institution acquired Manet’s iconic Jeanne (Spring). “I knew we had to do a show around this painting!” exclaims Groom, and thus began the collaboration for Manet and Modern Beauty premiering May 26 and running through September 8, 2019, at the AIC.

The focus is on the late 1870s through 1883, the final and as Groom reveals, some of the finest years of Manet’s career. He had been known as a man about town, frequenting cafés, and the opera, but now was suffering from the complications of tertiary syphilis and increasingly limited to work in his studio and in the suburbs where he spent summers. “He was an excellent communicator,” explains Groom, describing the many illustrated letters that the artist had sent from the countryside to Paris. “Manet starts making his own stationery and decorates the correspondence with sketches of little flowers or a hat that reminds him

of one a friend once wore—similar to the way emojis are added to a text.” Soon, and without the glorification of social media, he invites his close friends and patrons to visit him in the countryside. But it is in Paris where these invitations bear fruit,

“his studio becomes the upbeat hangout for looking and even 5 o’clock drinks,” says Groom. Manet also starts using pastels in addition to oils, in part because they are easier to manage. Groom does mention how interesting it is, however, that Manet is still purchasing and working on primed canvas rather than the traditional paper support used for pastels. This transition enables his oeuvre to take on a more direct quality, perhaps as an acknowledgment of the effects of age and illness, displaying an awareness of his internal and external surroundings.

Jeanne (Spring), done in 1881 and presented at the Paris Salon in 1882, depicts Jeanne Demarsy, a budding Parisienne actress of the time. She is portrayed in profile, elegant in a highly fashionable day dress with matching parasol and gloves— an ensemble selected by Manet, and

presented against a background of blossoming green foliage and flowers. Similarly, Autumn (Méry Laurent) of 1882, presents sitter Méry Laurent wearing a dark fur trimmed design by renowned couturier Charles Worth. Manet had seen the piece in Laurent’s wardrobe and even asked her to pass it on to him after she tired of it. With Jeanne (Spring) especially, he takes on the role of stylist in every form. He chooses the clothing and fabricates the outdoor scenery in the studio setting.

Groom presents the example of Manet’s Woman Reading, 1880/1881, a well-dressed woman skimming an illustrated journal, and seated at a marble-top table amidst what appears to be a city garden background. There are, however, curiosities such as why the figure is dressed in a dark wintery outfit when it looks to be a beautiful spring-like day. Only recently the answer

to that question has been answered by the recognition that the bluish form to her right, which matches the blue on the inside of the jacket material, is actually more than just an accent. It shows part of the watering can that is clearly evident in his paintings of the gardens at Bellevue where he spent the summer and fall in 1880. So here, as Groom continues, “Manet has used one of his own paintings as the backdrop for the model he posed in the studio to create the illusion of this modern café goer.”

Groom has been awarded both a Knight and an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Government. “Without her, France would be less known and less loved,” once stated the Ambassador to France. Groom speaks fluent French and loves fashion, especially vintage, “I like the idea of someone else wearing a piece—it is the historian in me.” During frequent work trips to Paris, schedule permitting, a favorite stop is the department store Au Printemps along Boulevard Haussmann, where Manet and his contemporaries would have also strolled over a century ago. Wandering with Groom as school groups and tourists peer at paintings and snap iPhone photos, I notice how she surveys the crowd with a keen sense of observation—as Manet did—knowing audiences will come to see the artist’s work in a new light.

AN EARLY WINTER

The Goodman brings on the Bard this spring, tackling iconic Shakespeare wit with The Winter’s Tale. Kate Fry stars in the reimagination of this classic comedy.

ened—the more love, the greater the capacity for the other stuff: anger, sadness, betrayal, jealousy. None of that means anything without deep love.”

Though considered one of Shakespeare’s wildest romantic comedies, A Winter’s Tale is not without tragedy or a heaping dose of darkness. It is a narrative of jealousy and rage, departure and disguise, and regret and redemption played out by kings, queens, shepherds, rogues, and one angry bear.

Tale is the story of Leontes, King of Sicilia, and his wife, Queen Hermione. When the king’s childhood friend Polixenes, himself the King of Bohemia, pays the couple a visit, Leontes is quickly convinced of an affair taking place under his own roof. Clouded by jealousy, a series of unfortunate events unfolds— speculation and misunderstanding play out in the most disastrous of ways. Winter eventually becomes spring, as it does, and the play, too, thaws into moments of joy and pure fantasy.

Actress Kate Fry plays Hermione in the Goodman Theatre’s production of the play, directed by the theater’s famed artistic director, Bob Falls, opening this month. Fry, who made her Goodman debut in 2017 with Ah, Wilderness!, observed this in her research on her current role: “I find it interesting how much real affection and love there is in her marriage. Loving someone so deeply, your responses are height-

Based in Evanston for over a decade, the mother of two grew up in Winnetka, attending New Trier and then Northwestern, where she majored in performance studies. There, she was drawn to Shakespeare as a reader, using performance as a tool for better understanding literature. “It was an excuse to read a lot of good books,” she shares.

In her early career, Fry was drawn to musicals, drawing a direct line there from her studies: “There are a lot of similarities between a character bursting into song and one reciting couplets— there’s always a reason for it,” she explains. “It usually means things are getting deeper or the stakes are getting higher.”

It is this thread of language that weaves through the actress’s career. One of her favorite experiences has been playing Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst She most connected to the play’s use of words as not just tools of communication but in “connecting to God, to nature, and to oneself. It falls under a similar umbrella as Shakespeare—it’s holy almost, the language.”

But most of all, she has loved taking on Shakespeare’s most famous “pants roles” over the years: Viola, Rosalind, Portia, and Julia. “Any time a female Shakespeare character puts the pants on, it’s always a really liberating experience,” Fry shares. “That’s when the freedom happens, the falling in love, and the self-discovery. It’s a wonderful, joyous ride.” Not unlike the premise of Tale, and maybe even life itself.

JEANNA PARK is the President of the Board of Trustees at Ragdale, one of the largest interdisciplinary artists’ communities in the country located on the former Lake Forest estate of Howard Van Doren Shaw. During her Ragdale tenure, Park helped launch the Ragdale in Schools program enriching local arts education in classrooms from Chicago to Zion. Fresh off the heels of Novel Affair—Ragdale’s tremendously successful annual fundraiser celebrating artists and authors—Park takes a moment to share how she stays current between board meetings and fundraisers.

ON HER NIGHTSTAND

IN HER EARBUDS

“I’m a fan of bands and singers that have endured—Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Elton John, and Sting to name a few. NPR can usually be heard somewhere in our house, a favorite show is Wait Wait…Don’t

Tell Me! I also like On Being with Krista Tippett (she was featured at Novel Affair a few years ago and has the most interesting interviews). Of course, I love listening to my son practice his tuba every day.”

ON HER MOBILE

“Running is my form of meditation and also keeps me linked to my running friends who distract me from the many miles we log together. I’m not very tech-savvy but my favorite app is linked to my Garmin running watch, which helps track my mileage and pace, especially if I’m following a race training plan. After my daily run, I use my Starbucks app to get coffee.”

“Always more books than I can read. I like to read at least one book from each author participating in Novel Affair. While in the Bahamas, I appropriately read award-winning author Laura Lippman’s Sunburn inspired by classic noir. I also finished books by Ragdale alumni and National Book Award Finalists whose novels were partly written at Ragdale: The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai and A Lucky Man by Jamel Brinkley. Next on my list is the newest book on style and clarity, Dreyer’s English by Random House editor and chief copy-writer Benjamin Dreyer.”

NAPOLITA

Several items on Napolita’s menu carry the designation D.O.P. or Denominazione di Origine Protetta. It’s a certification that ensures ingredients were grown by Italian farmers using traditional methods. It’s a mark of authenticity and quality that Napolita takes very seriously. This applies to their pasta, imported from Naples, as well as salad and dessert ingredients, but is most strongly felt in their Neapolitan pizzas. The mozzarella di Bufala is flown in from southern Italy every week, and both the flour they use and the wood-burning pizza oven itself were flown in from Naples.

Napolita’s atmosphere is warm and intimate. The front room is a bar with chalkboard menus and subway tiled walls. High top tables offer the perfect elevated view of the domed pizza oven in the corner as an endless parade of pizzas slide into the glowing mouth and exit 90 seconds later, crust perfectly risen and slightly blackened by temperatures nearing 1,000 degrees.

The top shelves of the bar are reserved for a wide selection of Italian grappas, a hard liquor digestivo made from the leftovers of the winemaking process. The lightest of these was sweet and fruity, port-like with a blueberry aftertaste. The strongest is very

powerful, with an earthy agriculture foretaste that dissolves into a strong alcohol afterburn.

Napolita means business. So much so, that they hesitated to offer their exceptional pizzas as take-out. “They won’t do it in Italy,” explained co-owner Josh Schonfeld. Eventually, Napolita had to yield to the demand for take-out, but having experienced it both ways, we have to agree with Schonfeld. Straight from the oven, you don’t just taste the difference, you feel the difference.

Napolita is located at 1126 Central Avenue in Wilmette, 224-2150305, napolitapizza.com.

This is one of their white (Bianca) pizzas, meaning no red sauce. Now, American pizza is my favorite food in the world. So with one half of the menu split into Rossa (with sauce) and Bianca pizzas, I’ll be honest, I didn’t even glance at the Bianca side of the menu. But a strong recommendation from our extremely personable server John brought this pizza to our table. It was the highlight of the night. Verdure Arrosto translates into Roasted Vegetables, so this pizza is topped with roasted tomato, portabello and cremini mushrooms, garlic, and Brussels sprouts. A coating of truffle oil delivers a kick from the first bite and the mixture of mushrooms and sprouts add a meaty complexity to this vegetarian offering. A mixture of fontal, goat cheese, parmesan, and fresh mozzarella combine with the authentic Italian crust to deliver a pizza that needs no assistance from any red sauce.

If one of your main reasons for traveling to Italy is the excellent food, you can save serious money on airfare by just heading to Wilmette.

Chef Boards

Constant readers already know that we’re suckers for a meat and cheese board. This one is top shelf. Four Italian cheeses—Bel Paese, semi-soft from the Lombardy region; Grana Padano, slow-ripened and Parmesan-like; Fontal, soft, mild, and creamy; and a pillow of fresh Mozzarella, sliced and sprinkled with pepper—take up one side of the board. Four sliced meats—salami; two types of soppressata, a spicy and a mild; and prosciutto—round out the mouth-wateringly savory side of the board. A row of warm housemade crostinis serve as the base of each bite, and Italian olives, candied walnuts, and fig jam add delightful flavor accents and recalibrate the palate.

Pollo Alla

Parmigiana

Aside from pizzas, this is their most popular entree. Succulent all-natural, free-range chicken is breaded and covered in a thick cap of melted mozzarella cheese, marinara, and fresh basil. Simple, classic, perfect. The impeccable quality of the ingredients and the expert preparation make this textbook comfort food. The side of linguine pasta comes with housemade marinara sauce, but we recommend swapping it out for their exemplary Bolognese sauce. It adds just the right savory kick that rounds out the flavors on the plate.

TRAVERSING NEW ZEALAND, ONE LUXURY LODGE AT A TIME.

SHERIDAN ROAD 72 FIRST CLASS
Matakauri Lodge

Air New Zealand’s new nonstop flight from Chicago to Auckland answers many a North Shore resident’s prayers. Step on the plane in Chicago and step off in paradise. Sumptuous seats, delicious food, endless onboard entertainment, and Air New Zealand’s friendly staff make for an enjoyable flight.

Our recent journey to New Zealand’s North and South Islands took us to the famed Robertson Lodges. Founded by New York financier Julian Robertson and his late wife, Josie, when the Wall Street giant embarked on a second career as a hotelier, these lodges are infused by the Robertson’s deep affection for all that is New Zealand.

We first visited Matakauri Lodge on the South Island. Perched on the side of a cliff overlooking Lake Wakatipu, our suite’s floorto-ceiling glass walls offered a mesmerizing panorama of the rugged peaks climbing out of the glacier lake and reaching toward the sky. Matakauri’s public spaces—dining room, spa, pool, and gym—provide breathtaking views of an ever-changing landscape. In the course of a day, the peaks altered their appearance from lush green to fog-shrouded to snow-capped (a reminder that the Southern Alps are just down the road). Decorated by Virginia Fisher, the Auckland-based designer, Matakauri Lodge has an airy, homey feel grounded in sophisticated luxury. No wonder Condé Nast Traveler included Matakauri Lodge on their 2018 Gold List.

Matakauri Lodge is fit for royalty as evidenced by Prince William and Duchess Kate’s visit in 2014. The lodge’s location just minutes from Queenstown, New Zealand’s capital of adventure, makes it equally attractive to the adventurous nonroyals as well. Queenstown offers the ultimate adventure travel bucket list—heli rides over vast fjords, bungy jumps from the Kawarau Bridge (the birthplace of commercial bungy), jet boat rides on the Dart River, and hikes on New Zealand’s most famous trails in the Mount Aspiring National Park (where myth, heritage, and

fantasy come to life). As each thrilling day came to an end, we looked forward to pre-dinner drinks and canapes with our fellow travelers and hotel manager before sitting down to an exquisite meal enjoyed as the last bit of color drained from the sky.

A quick flight to Auckland, followed by another short flight north to the Art Deco town of Napier took us to our next Robertson Lodge, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers. Upon arrival, a huge metal fence yawned open beckoning our entry. We later discovered this fence descends several feet below ground to keep out unwanted animals harmful to the native species. Traveling past acres of pine trees, we reached the hillcrest stone and timber main lodge. It was impeccably decorated from top to bottom with unique flair from Thai flatware to an antique coffee table repurposed from a pigeon coop.

FIRST CLASS

The 6,000-acre property can be explored via an all-terrain vehicle with a professional driver who guides visitors over rolling hills dotted with sheep, through pine forests, down to the sprawling Rangaika Beach, over rugged cliffs and prairies with a stop at the world’s largest mainland colony of the Gannet seabird. The Farm also boasts an award-winning Tom Doak-designed golf course, a working sheep and cattle farm, and a sanctuary for some of the country’s most precious flora (Manuka honey plants) and fauna (the darling endangered Kiwi bird). The Farm’s Sanctuary is also a haven for the Tuatara, a lizard unchanged since dinosaur times.

Mr. Robertson’s tireless efforts to bring New Zealand’s ecosystem back into balance are reflected in the Kiwi Discovery Walk, which provides an up close and personal encounter with the Kiwi bird. Our guide picked us up at the lodge for a thrilling ride into the forest. Upon arrival, we learned a bit about the Kiwi bird before suiting up with our Kiwi locator equipment. Once we found a young male bird, we watched as our guide carried out a wellness check—a treat most New Zealanders could only imagine as it is estimated that only ten percent ever see a Kiwi bird in the wild. Proceeds from this experience go to the Sanctuary to ensure the continuation of their conservation efforts.

Dining at The Farm was a sensual delight. Exquisite courses were paired with delicious wines in a candlelit atmosphere framed by views of rolling hills that descended into the sea and accompanied by the happy whispers of delighted guests. Evenings like these are what inspired readers of Condé Nast Traveler to rank The Farm within the top 20 best resorts in the world in 2018. After bidding farewell to our friends at The Farm, we headed to the Lodge at Kauri Cliffs located in the Bay of Islands. The

first of the Robertson Lodges and the first luxury lodge to open in New Zealand since 1924. The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs sits on the northern tip of the North Island where rugged cliffs fall away to three secluded private beaches near Matauri Bay.

The main lodge’s blond woodwork and Nantucket-type décor are the result of a close collaboration between the late Josie Robertson and designer Virginia Fisher. A raised wraparound porch serves as the perfect gathering platform for pre-dinner canapes and cocktails. The mixologist was an absolute genius who could whip up cocktails ranging from the divinely simple to the daringly decadent—depending on the connoisseur’s mood. The main dining room’s ample menu is best enjoyed fireside while the outdoor patio was perfect for breakfast and lunch. A culinary must is the Tuna Trio. Beautifully plated with a whisper of wasabi and hints of tender greens, this dish was our daily delight.

One morning we headed to the Pink Beach with our fisherman guide Simon. With shell-covered stretches reaching out to a necklace of lagoons, Pink Beach is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches making for a beguiling location for our morning outing. Shore fishing was something we had never attempted so we were especially excited to catch an iridescent snapper. We savored our success over dinner when our fish was beautifully prepared by the chef.

Our cottage at Kauri Cliffs sat on a hill overlooking a portion of the David Harman-designed golf course with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Like the main lodge, the cottage’s decor was at once comfortable yet sophisticated. We began each morning the way a morning should be savored—with coffee on our terrace listening to a birdsong symphony and watching the ocean wake to a grand new day.

In November, Kauri Cliffs will welcome a new addition to the luxurious property with the launch of The Residences at Kauri Cliffs. The three, four-bedroom private Residences will offer a stay compiling the very best in accommodations for larger guest groups. Walking into their Residence, guests will face a spacious living and dining room, accompanied by a family-sized kitchen complete with a casual dining island, a butler’s pantry for exclusive chef service, and a mini-bar carrying New Zealand’s finest wines, beers, and spirits. Stepping out, guests will have access to an expansive veranda and a 25-foot saltwater swimming pool.

We couldn’t agree more with Conde Nast Traveler’s recent Gold List inclusion of the Lodge at Kauri Cliffs. What are you waiting for? A dreamlike Robertson Lodge golden getaway is just a phone call or keystroke away.

DREAM TEAM

Former filmmakers Dave and Amy Chung have built a career in creativity, now lending their storyteller’s lens to real estate with Compass, developing dream homes for future neighbors across the North Shore and ensuring every client’s story has a happy ending.

On the corner of Fuller Lane and Sheridan Road, you’ll find the rarest in real estate: the new build that seems like it’s been there all along. Listed at $1.7 million, this timeless 5-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom, complete with first-floor master suite, feels right at home. With rooms designed to optimize the spectacular views of Lake Michigan, the outdoors truly make their way inside, a perfectly coastal sensibility enhanced by detailed millwork, wide oak floors, and a serene sense of design. It’s easy to see why it’s been described as “the perfect space in the perfect place.”

Equally as compelling is the story of the husband and wife team handling the sale of this unique property, Dave and Amy Chung. The brokers, builders, designers, developers, and investors,

who joined the team at Compass last year, drawn to its client-first focus and innovative technology, are not only selling this property but built it from the ground up, not unlike their impressive career in the field.

The two first met while working for Walt Disney, collaborating on the animated feature Chicken Little—Dave in film editing and Amy in production management—before relocating to Chicago 12 years ago. Dave began work at Morningstar, in digital media, while Amy landed at culinary school, leading to a position at Everest and later with Common Threads, an after-school program focused on cooking and nutrition co-founded by Art Smith. Four years ago, the couple went out on their own, running a small but successful software company in the education space.

They came to real estate, the culmination of all of their creative endeavors, in 2016 after setting foot in their dream property in Wilmette. The couple instantly fell in love with this 1920s Sears kit home, seeing its market potential right away for young families just like them. They decided to buy it, embarking on a full gut rehab and huge addition. It was during this process they both got their real estate licenses: “We thought, ‘We should sell this ourselves,’ and from there it’s taken off. People saw how excited we were and our passion was contagious!”

Dave continues, “All of these past experiences have led us to where we are. What we did there and do now is about making things better. When we worked at Disney, it was all about the details: when it gets down to production, there can’t be a pixel in the wrong place or one extra frame. Making movies is about making tens of thousands of little choices. It’s that attention to detail that stays with us.”

When it comes to design, those details fall to Amy, who works closely with their builders to tap into what the potential buyer is looking for. “I would never design something I wouldn’t live with or feel proud to put my name on. Knowing someone will enjoy it makes it fun,” she says.

Her specialty is in creating spaces that are calm and peaceful, that allow you to feel like you can breathe once you walk through the door. Tile is also a signature of the designer: “It’s so fun to work with—you can do so many interesting things just in the way you lay it out,” Amy reveals. “You can achieve really complicated designs with really simple styles.”

For Fuller and Sheridan, she chose an appealing neutral palette with pops of color and touches of vintage charm, like the nook the couple created off of the living room, specially designed for warming up in front of the fire. “Those details are what make homes

on the North Shore special. It’s those small moments that give a home character and personality,” she shares.

Every choice the Chungs make is intentional, and in this space, accessibility, like its zero-threshold shower, and low maintenance considerations, down to the thoughtful organic landscaping by Greenwise, are the top priorities. As are luxurious, thoughtful features like heated tile (as Amy says, “No one should ever have cold toes”) and custom-made Amish cabinetry. They personally care about every detail, down to the color temperature of the light bulbs.

As North Shore residents themselves—the couple reside in east Wilmette with their two children—they are truly invested in the area. “When it comes to working with buyers, people are really looking for a trusted advisor along the way. We’re looking out for them, not just because it’s our job, but it’s in everybody’s best interest—we’re helping our future neighbors, essentially,” Dave shares. “We have a fun opportunity to introduce people to our community and get them excited about it.”

“And when working with sellers, we form this bond, this relationship, with the client, the family, and the home itself,” he adds. “This isn’t a transactional business, it’s a relational one.”

SOFIA, SUPERWOMAN

Lake Forest’s Sofia Westmeyer is a tireless advocate in the nonprofit world through Headstrong, helping veterans heal the hidden wounds of war, and the Paloma del Carmen Fund, dedicated to hurricane crisis relief in Puerto Rico— all while raising three young children.

“The more we’ve learned about it, the more we believe in it,” explains Sofia Westmeyer of Headstrong, the New York City-based nonprofit that provides cost-free, bureaucracy-free, and stigma-free mental health care for veterans. The organization’s mission is to treat the men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and offer support for their loved ones. Shockingly, more veterans of those two wars have died of suicide than in combat.

Since it was founded in 2012, after former United States Marine Corps officer Zach Iscol recognized his fellow service members struggling with psychological stress and lack of access to care, Headstrong has treated over 600 veterans. The organization moves past existing barriers to connect veterans with experienced clinicians and confidential, individualized care, minus extended wait times and extensive forms. Through a variety of treatment methods, such as psychiatric assessment, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational and mind-body work, and individual psychotherapy, Headstrong takes a head-on approach to PTSD, anxiety, depression, addiction, anger management, trauma, grief, and loss.

“Headstrong looks at the person as a whole,” says Westmeyer, who was introduced to the organization with her husband, Peter Westmeyer, founder, president, and managing principal of MBRE Healthcare, several years ago. At the time, Peter worked closely with a Headstrong board member, who invited the couple to attend charity events for the organization hosted by Saturday Night Live alum and current Late Night host, Seth Meyers.

Peter was asked to join the board in 2014, and the pair have been dedicated to bringing Headstrong’s mission and services to the Chicago area ever since. September 9 will mark the fourth event they have hosted for Headstrong, taking place at the Knollwood Club in Lake Forest for a second year.

SHERIDAN ROAD 90
“WE HAVE SO MANY VETERANS IN OUR FAMILY—GRANDFATHERS, UNCLES, COUSINS—IT’S REALLY SOMETHING CLOSE TO OUR HEARTS.”

“Everyone has been so supportive,” shares Westmeyer. “We have so many veterans in our family—grandfathers, uncles, cousins—it’s really something close to our hearts.”

Westmeyer’s commitment to charitable work does not stop there. Alongside sister Astrid Piccolo, she formed the Paloma del Carmen Fund, named after her youngest daughter. Growing up in Puerto Rico, where she lived until her early teens before her family relocated to the mainland through her father’s work with Baxter, it was natural for Westmeyer to choose her beloved city of San Juan for her daughter Paloma’s christening three years ago. The baptism took place at Catedral de San Juan Bautista, the second oldest church in the Western Hemisphere and home to the tomb of Ponce de Leon. Recognizing some recent wear and tear to the structure, the family raised money to repair the church and return this historically significant marvel to its previous glory.

When Hurricane Maria hit in the fall of 2017, devastating the island and its economy, the sisters knew they could not stand idly by. They quickly reopened the 501(c)(3) they had created for the church and got to work. “We didn’t want to give handouts—we wanted to give people their livelihoods back,” Westmeyer explains. “The agriculture sector had been decimated. Farmers lost 80 to 90 percent of crops, and things like coffee and avocados take a long time to grow. For so many of them, this meant their dream was gone.”

So far, the Paloma del Carmen Fund has raised in excess of $500,000 for 55 farms, directly impacting 317 employees, and five fishing associations, benefitting 89 fishermen. Rather than just putting checks in the mail, the fund buys the materials needed to rebuild, all sourced from locally-owned stores, totaling $250,000 of equipment donated, to date. “We get pictures all the time of things like greenhouses and irrigation systems that have been rebuilt,” says Westmeyer. Of all the money donated, less than one percent has gone to administrative costs—it is the intrepid sisters behind the scene, who take no pay for their efforts. “We’re proud of our work,” she shares.

The sisters are now in phase two of delivering aid through a microloan program administered by a local San Juan bank dedicated to further boosting the farming and fishing sectors. Making smart use of the remaining half of

funds raised, these low-interest loans are geared toward the purchasing of new equipment and expansion, giving these business owners a jumpstart.

When not advocating for those who need help rebuilding or starting new, be it figuratively or literally brick by brick, the mother to three little ones—Henry, age 8, Catalina, age 6, and Paloma, age 3—enjoys time at home with family in Lake Forest, where her parents, sister, and brother also reside. While she loves to host and describes Peter as a fantastic cook, they also like to hit the town, counting spots such as Deer Path Inn, Longitud315, and Market House on the Square, which hosted a Paloma del Carmen Fund day, donating a portion of its proceeds to the charity, as favorites.

Though an avid online shopper these days, the former fashion student at Texas Christian University once owned a boutique in Highland Park. “I’m still good friends with old customers,” she reveals. “One is an OB at Northwestern in Lake Forest—she delivered my sister’s baby!” Therese Crowe Design in Chicago and A.M. DePrisco in Lake Forest are her current brick and mortar picks.

The family’s biggest passion, however, is travel. Every February they head to Aspen, though the British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, and Montana are also top on their list. But it is Puerto Rico, of course, that has their hearts. “We’re currently building a house there,” Westmeyer reveals. “I want our children to be connected to where I grew up.” While there, it’s not all lounging in the sand: “Just this past Christmas, my 8-year-old son, and husband took surfing lessons. We love to explore, not sit still. I like to show them everything!”

While there, she recommends the St. Regis and the historic Hotel El Convento, where the couple got married. In Old San Juan, Westmeyer suggests Café El Punto for a casual lunch, Marmalade for dinner, and La Factoría for drinks. In Condado, lunch at Ropa Vieja Grill, dinner at Mario Pagan, and cocktails at OLV: Fifty Five are also musts.

“Puerto Rico has gone through so much in the past year, but it’s green again and sparkling. Old San Juan looks beautiful,” she shares. “By just going to visit, you’re helping. You are part of the effort to support this wonderful place.”

MIRROR, MIRROR, SUMMER BALL

Celebrating Seventy Years of Ensuring Bright Futures for Chicago’s Youth.

SHERIDAN ROAD 94
WORDS BY MORGAN HOGERTY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES Nancy Santi and Barb Speer, co-chairs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Summer Ball-The Mirror Ball. Both festively attired in anticipation of the glittering affair on June 7.

Standing before a mirror provides a rare experience—the ability to look both forward and backward at the same time. This unique feature inspired the 2019 theme of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Summer Ball—The Mirror Ball. Event chairs Nancy Santi and Barb Speer of Winnetka are delighted to offer their guests a chance to better understand how Club activities, many of which are STEM-related, help Club members “look into” a bright future. As this year’s event celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Woman’s Board, Mirror Ball guests will also “reflect on” an extraordinary record of service rendered by seven of its members.

Proceeds from the Mirror Ball will fund programming across 21 Chicago-area clubs. This programming fulfills the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s mission of nurturing underserved youth while teaching them the tools for a productive future. “When thinking of Boys & Girls Clubs, some people think of it simply as a place where kids play basketball after school,” observes Santi. “Yes, our members play basketball but they also attend leadership workshops, learn about financial and time management, and are exposed to career possibilities in fields ranging from fashion to coding. A favorite experience of mine was when I was given a tour of a new state-of-theart science lab by some Club members. As they pointed out the new microscopes and laptops, I could literally feel their excitement and pride.”

Science labs at the True Value and Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Clubs are the site of a nationally recognized program dubbed “Science Club” and “Junior Science Club.” This program, the only one of its kind in the country, pairs Northwestern University graduate students with Club members. Twice weekly, the graduate student acts as a scientist-mentor guiding the scientist-mentees in fun and engaging scientific investigations.

Inspired by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s emphasis on life-skills programming and strong mentor relationships, Santi joined the Woman’s Board in 2013. “I had taught elementary school in inner-city schools in Houston. From my experiences there, I knew underserved kids needed a consistency beyond what their schools could offer,” Santi reflects. “When I learned about the large variety of enriching experiences Club members encounter, experiences that create enthusiasm and plant seeds for a successful future, I knew I had to get involved. The programming is enhanced by the amazing Boys & Girls Club mentors, who show these kids just how valuable they really are.”

Founded just after World War II, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s Woman’s Board is a philanthropic powerhouse whose membership has raised more than $80 million over the last 70 years. The Mirror Ball will salute the decades-long service of seven of its members. Renee Crown, a board member for 48 years, is the board’s longest-serving member while the remaining six–Linda Gantz, Ellen O’Connor, Barbara Pearlman, Bonnie Stearns, Liz Stiffel, and Jocelyn Stoller have each served on the board for over 30 years.

“This record of service is unmatched among the city’s non-

profits,” observes Mimi LeClair, President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago. “Their years of service really speak to their passionate belief that children are our country’s greatest resource, and they will do anything possible to help our Club members fulfill their potential. Once these women get an idea, they are unabashed in making it happen.” Speer lauds “The Magnificent Seven” for their mentorship abilities. “We call these women ‘The Magnificent Seven’ because they have given our board such a unique character,” Speer explains. “They serve as role models to all of us because their involvement and dedication to the Board has been truly tireless.”

An event as successful as the Summer Ball relies heavily upon the Woman’s Board members’ time and treasure. While the live auctions of past Summer Balls have traditionally offered “oneof-a-kind” experiences, a 2019 live auction item promises to be a “first-of-a-kind” experience. The lucky winners will be the first to experience the premier seed-to-table culinary experiences of The Farm, a new venture at the world-renowned Brush Creek Ranch. This luxury western destination, located on a 30,000-acre working cattle ranch in Saratoga, Wyoming, is owned by Board member Beth White and her husband, Bruce. Featuring dishes and libations created with ingredients sourced from the ranch’s own creamery, distillery, cheese maker, and bakery, The Farm raises Brush Creek Ranch’s all-inclusive luxury dude ranch experience to an entirely new level.

The iconic Summer Ball has ushered in Chicago’s gala season since 1952. As the city’s oldest black-tie gala, it serves as a model for other nonprofit events. “The Summer Ball is our largest annual fundraiser and is quite a feat of planning and execution,” says Charlene Huang Olson, President of the Woman’s Board and 2016 Summer Ball Co-Chair. “Nancy and Barb are a dynamic duo! They are fun, enthusiastic leaders and are wonderful in engaging our Woman’s Board members in this significant effort. They have planned an event that will delight our guests with its whimsical details while also emphasizing the importance of our mission.”

Santi and Speer’s excellent working relationship is founded upon years of friendship. “I have known Nancy’s husband, Scott, since he was in college,” Speer reminisces. “He was an intern in my late husband, David’s, division at ITW. After he graduated, Scott came to work at ITW. When he met Nancy, she became part of our lives.” The two women are also strong supporters of two Chicago charter schools. Santi has been long involved in LEARN Charter School Network’s Excel school, which is located at the Herro Family Campus and serves kindergarten through sixth grade. Speer is very active in the ITW David Speer Academy, a STEM high school. “Our involvement on the Woman’s Board aligns so well with our support of these schools because the Boys & Girls Clubs provide an after-school and summertime extension of the safe and nurturing environment the students experience during the day,” explains Santi.

The 2019 Woman’s Board Summer Ball will be held on June 7th at the Hilton Chicago. To learn more, please visit bgcc.org/summerball.

Sparking JOY Through THOUGHTFUL ORDER

SHERIDAN ROAD 98
Silvia Flinton

Silvia Flinton Brings Marie Kondo’s Magic to the North Shore.

On New Year’s Eve, many glasses of bubbly were raised to a common resolution— orderly closets and clutter-free drawers! As confetti sailed through the air and kisses fell upon cheeks, serene and efficient homes were dreamily imagined. On New Year’s Day, with strong cups of coffee in hand, the newly resolute binge-watched the Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo while paging through her best-seller The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

Months later, drawers can still only be closed with a firm shove of the hip and those Marie Kondo books are buried under teetering piles of paperbacks. The bad news continues ... Marie Kondo is far too busy organizing the world to make house calls to the North Shore.

The good news is that Silvia Flinton, a certified KonMari consultant and owner of Thoughtful Order, a Wilmette-based organizing business, can help rescue that resolution before it is permanently shelved alongside outdated Yellow Pages and mismatched Tupperware.

Flinton is one of approximately 225 KonMari consultants worldwide. Just in case you have been living under piles of junk mail, the KonMari Method is the creation of the best-selling author, Netflix star, and queen of tidy, Marie Kondo. The KonMari Method strives to teach two primary skills: first, how to determine which items in the home “spark joy” and second, how to release the remaining items with gratitude. In 2016, in response to a growing global demand for all things KonMari, the Consultant Certification Course was launched.

When Flinton first read Kondo’s book, she felt an immediate connection. “I have always been a very organized person even when I was younger. My close relationship with my label maker has long been a running joke within my family,” she observes. “When I later realized I could actually do this as a job, I was so excited.”

The application process for the Consultant Certification Course is rigorous. Prospective consultants are first asked to KonMari their entire house and then submit detailed pictures of drawers, closets, and entire rooms. “It is important to demonstrate you have mastered this practice and really live it before you teach others,” explains Flinton. If the photos reflect a solid knowledge of the KonMari Method, the applicant is then accepted into a two-day seminar. Following the seminar, the applicant must complete a minimum of 30 hours of practice sessions documenting the work in written reports. After these reports are approved, the applicant is required to pass a written exam and oral interview. In 2017, after successfully completing these steps and receiving her certification, Flinton founded Thoughtful Order.

The core of Flinton’s business is a wish for her clients to be able to live their best lives. Following a complimentary consultation, clients are asked to visualize their ideal lifestyle. With this vision as their focus, the clients meet one-on-one with Flinton for sessions lasting between three to five hours. Each session addresses a specific category in a certain sequential order—beginning with clothing, followed by books, paper, Komono (miscellaneous items), and ending with sentimental items. This order is based upon Kondo’s recommendation that people should begin with the easiest category and work up to

the hardest category in order to develop and hone their keeping and discarding decisions. In specific cases, however, the order of categories may be rearranged. “The order is really useful because it helps people not get ‘stuck’ at the beginning of the tidying process. However, my interactions are always client led,” Flinton says. “While clothes are typically the first category in the KonMari Method, a client who collects vintage clothing might find this category to be the most challenging because the clothing is especially sentimental. Then, we would start with books or paper.”

After all the items from a category are collected, the client handles each one. This process yields Flinton’s favorite part of the KonMari process—the spark joy. “When most people think of organizing they think about what they can be rid of. KonMari, however, focuses on learning about what you keep by recognizing what sparks joy,” Flinton clarifies.

Flinton, who has been married for 21 years and is the mother of two busy teenagers, stresses the KonMari Method is not about creating magazine-perfect interiors. “Removing the distraction of clutter allows you to focus on being a family.” Flinton shares. “Life is busy, often complicated, and homes get messy. After you have curated your items and established a place for everything, tidying then becomes a ten-minute exercise rather than an overwhelming burden.”

As the KonMari Method requires clients to purposefully handle each item, the process for an entire household may take between three to six months. Such a thorough process can yield unexpected treasures—one of Flinton’s clients found a longlost stone from her engagement ring in the back of a kitchen cupboard. More typically, this thorough and thoughtful process reaps lifelong benefits for her clients. “The process is intended to be ‘one and done.’ Successfully completing the KonMari Method teaches you new life skills,” Flinton explains “There are always going to be life transitions—household moves, kids arrive, kids leave—but once these skills are learned they should last a lifetime.”

SENIORS AND POLYPHARMACY

Polypharmacy is defined as the simultaneous use of multiple drugs to treat a single ailment or condition. Studies have shown that seniors are at a higher risk for polypharmacy, as they are typically on more medications, and often unclear on what the exact treatment is or even the name of the medications.

Prescribing medications is an essential part of what a physician does to improve the lives of their patients. However, there are some pitfalls of medications that patients should be aware of. Elderly are particularly at risk of side effects of medications and polypharmacy. For example, the treatment of hypertension and depression are two categories of diseases where medications can have unwanted side effects.

One of the most common medical conditions patients are treated for is hypertension. To reach proper control, it is not uncommon for patients to require two or even three antihypertensives. Often these medications are not changed unless the patient or family themselves observe a potential side effect or a sign of over-dosage or strength and bring it up to the physician. Elderly patients are at particular risk because low blood pressure contributes to dizziness, fatigue, increased somnolence, and finally, gait instability leading to falls.

Depression and anxiety are two other commonly treated health issues in the elderly. Untreated depression can contribute to various physical symptoms such as agitation, appetite suppression, fatigue, confusion,

and even cognitive impairment. However, the medications used to treat depression have a lot of side effects that need to be considered and re-evaluated on a regular basis. Additionally, as patients age, those same medications that improved health may begin to negatively impact them. The dose may need to be reduced or the medication may need to be weaned off.

It’s also common for patients to be treated by various doctors, including their primary care physician and specialists. Sometimes when one physician starts a medication, the others don’t know or realize this has occurred, unless the patient is very well organized or medical records are well maintained and available to each doctor. When medications are changed frequently or patients are hospitalized many times or moved from one facility to another, the risk of polypharmacy increases. Most medication errors or polypharmacy occur during this transitional care of a patient.

So how can families and patients reduce the risk of not only polypharmacy but medication errors in general? First, keep a log or list of the medications, match that with the doctor’s list, and update both regularly as medication changes occur. Second, work closely with your primary care physician, as they should already be keeping track of the medications and any changes. Finally, if a patient lives in a senior community, working closely with the building staff and nurses is imperative in reducing medication confusion and errors.

PUBLISHER’S PROFILE

“I get tremendous satisfaction from seeing the psychological and physical transformations that my patients experience following surgery,” Dr. Geldner says. “They revitalize their lives.”

Dr. Geldner’s path to managing two plastic surgery centers in the Chicago area was, at the very least, unconventional.

The son of Holocaust survivors, Dr. Geldner was born in Warsaw and immigrated to Israel with his parents as a very young child, then to the United States at the age of six. His father, a neurosurgeon, and his mother, an opthamologist, helped expose him to the field of medicine.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. Geldner went on to receive his training in plastic surgery from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency at the University of Texas, Galveston, where he met his Chicago-born wife, JuliAnn. Together, they decided to base his practice in Chicago. JuliAnn, a lawyer, is the Geldner Center’s General Counsel and COO.

The foundation of the Geldner Center’s success is a focus on understanding and gaining trust with patients.

“Our interest is in meeting a subjective goal,” Dr. Geldner says. “The point of plastic surgery is to achieve the goals of patients, and that achievement is built on a relationship.”

“Plastic surgery is not based on needs,” he continues. “It’s based on what it is about you that bothers you and how I can help you. It’s patient-centric and patient-focused.”

When you book an appointment with the Geldner Center, you might have a start time for your appointment, but Dr. Geldner won’t leave the room until he feels he and his patient have established a true collaboration.

“That can take five minutes or it can take two hours,” JuliAnn Gardner says. “It doesn’t make it easy to manage the appointment calendar.”

Undergirding the Geldner Center’s success is a keen focus on education and ethics.

“I’m a lifetime learner,” Dr. Geldner says. “When JuliAnn and I go on vacation she loads her Kindle with fiction books and I bring my medical journals. I go to conferences and try and keep up with the latest technology.”

INSIDE OUT

The center’s assessments, completed in collaboration with patients, might lead to a recommendation of surgery or the center might refuse procedures if they don’t meet its ethical guidelines.

In addition to its comprehensive set of plastic surgery procedures, the Geldner Center offers many aesthetic services performed by highly trained nurses and practitioners. Services include injections and medical-grade facials.

When Dr. Peter Geldner was in high school, he witnessed a young burn victim who had been treated by a plastic surgeon and who couldn’t stop talking about how the surgeon had changed his life.

That was the moment Dr. Geldner knew he wanted to be a plastic surgeon.

Fast forward a few decades. Dr. Geldner now runs the Geldner Center, a plastic surgery and aesthetics center with locations in Chicago’s Gold Coast and Hinsdale.

Geldner Center staff are held to the same high standards that Dr. Geldner sets for himself.

“Having highly trained Nurse Injectors and Estheticians gives us a strategic advantage,” Dr. Gardner says. “Our Nurse Injectors and Estheticians not only receive the highest level of training, they also enroll in continuing education and are experts in their fields.”

All of this adds up to a winning combination for the Geldner Center, a perhaps improbable destination that started for Dr. Peter Geldner in Warsaw many years ago.

The Geldner Center is located at 12 Salt Creek, Suite 315, in Hinsdale, and 680 N. Lake Shore Drive, Suite 1325, in Chicago, 312-9814440, mygeldnercenter.com.

Plastic Surgery Update: Plasma Pen

The Plasma Pen treatment is a revolutionary new skin care treatment designed to tighten and tone skin. It can be used anywhere on the body. The nitrogen plasma energy that is created transfers rapidly to the skin outer (epidermal) layer while simultaneously heating the deeper dermal structures. In doing so we create a dual zone of micro-trauma. The deeper thermal zone affects the fibroblasts, which are the most common cells of connective tissue. Fibroblasts make collagen. Most fibroblasts are inactive and will not produce collagen unless they are specifically re-activated by a wound healing process or inflammatory response. This is exactly what the Plasma Pen does.

Plasma Pen treatments are delivered in a fractionated format that allows for rapid healing and recovery. The formation of new epithelial tissue occurs in 3 to 7 days. Initially, there are visible tiny carbon crusts which flake off. These carbon crusts serve as a natural and protective biological dressing and flake off naturally as newly formed and rejuvenated “new epidermis” appears.

This, however, is just the first phase as the skin continues to improve over the next 12 weeks. This deeper healing process is characterized by a comprehensive deeper remodeling of the dermis with the production of new collagen.

In contrast to laser treatments, Plasma Pen treatments are completely uniform. It does not damage surrounding tissue. There’s no open wound so the risk of infection is minimal. Also since the treatment is fractional and not chromophere-dependent, the risk of hyper pigmentation is mitigated.

The treatment itself is carried out under a topical anesthetic. There is no blood, scalpels, or cutting. Post treatment there is little or no pain, mild swelling, very short downtime, rapid recovery, and natural looking results that last for 3 years.

We are very excited about this new technology and feel confident that is will transform the aging process.

HONOR IN SERVICE

Naval o cer and former Kraft VP STEVE RUTLEDGE pays tribute to fellow veterans and active servicemen through volunteerism.

To hear Steve Rutledge talk about his work with No Veteran Dies Alone (NVDA) is to hear a voice rich with reverence. Founded in 1988, NVDA pairs volunteers with veterans at hospice programs across the country as a reassuring presence during their last months and days. Rutledge, who came to Chicago more than 30 years ago as the Vice President of advertising for Kraft and has spent the last 20-plus years running a marketing consulting practice, found NVDA in 2015.

It all started when President Barack Obama appointed Bob McDonald, former CEO of Procter & Gamble, as Secretary of Veterans A airs. Having started his career with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, and as a former naval o cer in the Vietnam War, Rutledge was inspired to reach out to McDonald via email straight away. “A lot of people stepped up asking to help, from P&G guys like me to his fellow West Point classmates,” Rutledge explains.

A shift in administration also shifted plans at the national level, prompting Rutledge to seek out something closer to home. is led him to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago (“Lovell”). A rst-of-its-kind partnership between the U.S. Department of Veterans A airs and the Department of Defense, Lovell has a unique mission, serving active military personnel and retirees, in a single health care facility.

It was there that Rutledge was introduced to NVDA, located in the center’s hospice unit. “I learned about the program, providing company and companionship to these individuals as they head down the last mile of their lives. For many people, this wouldn’t be the type of thing they’d like to do, but something told me I’d like to try. I saw it as my duty to those who have preceded me to be of help to them,” he says.

Lovell’s NVDA program, which counts about 50 volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, aims to buoy the spirits of those at the end of their lives—through conversation, reading, sharing a meal, watching a movie, or just being there to listen or hold a hand. Rutledge shares, “You come to know some really interesting people. ey have wonderful stories to tell about their time in service and after.”

One such story is that of a 104-year-old patient known as “Mr. G,” who graduated high school at the height of the Depression.

ough he had hoped to attend college and become a civil engineer, there was simply no money for that, and he instead followed in his father’s footsteps as a butcher. Mr. G soon married and was shipped o to the Paci c where he fought for three years and earned two Bronze Stars, dutifully donning his butcher’s apron upon his return. After hearing this story about Mr. G’s dreams of college, Rutledge says, “I found myself thinking, ‘We ought to be able to do something about this.’” He called Representative Bob Dold, who was able to get Mr. G named an honorary member of

Georgia Tech’s Class of 2016 by its president. e university sent him the very same box all incoming freshmen receive, including a freshman beanie. “Dold gave him this box and letter on Memorial Day. When Mr. G realized he was going to be a college man, he was grinning from ear to ear,” Rutledge remembers.

“All of us volunteers would say the same thing: we get so much more out of the experience than we give. In many cases, we— along with the Lovell sta —become like family,” he shares. “It is an honor to be with these people at such a critical time, an honor to be with them at the end.”
