Happy November and welcome to the beginning of the holiday season. This issue is full of giving thanks and celebrating people, art, and jewels. Our first feature highlights the carefully curated collection of Winnetka’s Roger Weston presented in Painting the Floating World: Ukiyo-e Masterpieces from the Weston Collection at The Art Institute of Chicago from November 4 through January 27, 2019. I met Roger and Pam Weston at an Art Institute Board of Trustees dinner in 2013 and Pam and I became fast friends. Pam introduced me to Cheryl Mankoff whose motto of feel good by doing good is the focus of our second feature. Cheryl founded a company that for each pair of Feel Good Undies purchased, a pair is donated to the homeless. These beautiful underpinnings will have you feeling good while supporting a great cause. Our final feature is a multi-page spread showcasing the glorious gems of North Shore retailers. The holidays are on the horizon … hint, hint.

THANKING
All of you for your wonderful support
In Shore vs. City we hear the city and shore faves of the beautiful and talented electric violinist and DJ Kat V. Her crowd-pleasing performances are a feast for the senses. Love brings us the Laver Cup and the fast flying serves of 12 top tennis greats including the fabulous (and Laver founder) Roger Federer. Leaving the court for the studio, Wilmette’s Jane Carney draws us into her artwork sharing her creative inspiration in Art & Artist. Putting down the paintbrush and picking up a soft Tee, Trending introduces the founders of Third Coast apparel. Swapping comfy clothes for cozy ambiance, Dinner Date visits an old Evanston favorite—Jilly’s Café. Jilly’s was one of my and my husband’s go-tos for Saturday nights when we lived in Evanston. First Class books a ticket to The Home Ranch—rustic elegance situated in the shadow of the Rocky
Trading lassos for fabrics, Home Tour shines a light on Beth Cadigan’s gorgeously appointed Winnetka home. Beth keeps it all in the family as she enlisted décor assistance from her aunt Kathy Hanley of Lake Interiors and had her sister Regan Wood (a New York-based photographer) shoot the interiors. We close the November issue with a nod to Veterans Day and a celebration of our nation’s heroes with a story about the Lake County Honor Flight. My daughter and husband went on the Lake County Honor Flight to Washington D.C. as guardians for two Vietnam veterans—Jerry Stiemsma and Pasquale Caputo. It was an experience they will treasure always. Read Parting Words to learn how you too can become an Honor Flight guardian.

LAVER CUP
World class tennis at Chicago’s United Center.
There was a comeback theme threading through the Laver Cup, the second edition of Roger Federer’s world-class tennis event, as it set up stakes at the United Center September 21 through 23.
There was the return of men’s professional tennis to Chicago after a 26year hiatus. There was the return of the McEnroe’s—John and Patrick—who incidentally played that last professional match against each other 26 years ago. There was the near comeback of Team World against a more talent-heavy Team Europe when John Isner and Kevin
Anderson, down 7-1 and fueled by the raucous crowd, fired in laser-like serves and managed to take the lead 8-7.
That victory slipped through their fingers doesn’t matter. It was the excitement of watching Team World claw their way back that was the draw for the 93,000 plus fans in attendance.
Named after legendary two-time grand slam winner Rod Laver, the tournament pitted 12 of the top tennis players in the world against each other in a battle for prize money and bragging rights.
What makes the Laver Cup so extraordinary is the concentration of talent that is thrown into the mix. They are the crème de la crème of the sport. Team Europe was Federer, Novak Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Alexander Zverev, Kyle Edmund, and David

Goffin. For Team World, three of the six were Americans—John Isner, Jack Sock, and Frances Tiafoe. Kevin Anderson, Diego Schwartzman, and Nick Kyrgios rounded out the rest of the team.
Grigor Dimitrov, world number seven, raved about the camaraderie the Laver Cup produced among the players who are usually his opponents.
“I mean, just the environment itself lifts you up,” he noted.
“We all go to dinners. We have lunch together. We speak before the matches. You don’t see that very often (on the tour),” he said. “To me, I really embrace that. I appreciate it.”
Roger Federer agreed, “It was amazing to team up with players who are normally your biggest rivals and have the chance to play on the same side of the net and be members of the same team.” He said, “This event is so close to my heart. I was always going to try my best. And when you do that, the opponents also have no choice but to step in and give everything they have. The rest of the team follows.”
The Laver Cup is the brainchild of Federer’s agency Team8 and modeled after golf’s Ryder Cup. Here’s how it works: There are two teams, Team Europe and Team World. Four players qualify based on their ATP rankings. Two were “captain’s picks,” promising young players with potential, selected by captains Bjorn Borg (Team Europe) and John McEnroe (Team World). To add some drama, the captains, and everybody else for that matter, don’t know who plays until the blind exchange of cards the night before.
In the end, the winners received an extra $250,000 per player and the losers, well, they get appearance fees.
According to Katrina Adams, CEO of the United States Tennis Association, Chicago presented “the best bid” for the event.
Tony Godsick, Chairman of the Laver Cup and Federer’s agent said, “We chose Chicago because of the fervent tennis fan base, the leadership of Mayer Rahm Emanuel and his colleagues, and the world-class infrastructure at the United Center. It was a team effort to produce Laver Cup 2018, and we are very pleased with how it unfolded.”
Off the court, the experience was one you would expect with a founding partner in Rolex. The sleek black court and lounge atmosphere; hallways lined with Laver’s rackets and memorabilia; high-end hospitality spaces, like the Rocket Club which served scrumptious buffets overflowing from sculpted ice; and finally, to the watch worn so proudly on Federer’s wrist—all provided a unique and unrivaled experience.
On the court, it seemed like the tennis was engineered just as expertly to hold people’s attention until the very end. Team Europe took a huge lead early, but over the course of the weekend, the underdogs, Team World roared back, took the lead only to lose the title during the last match in a nail biter, a match topped off with Coach McEnroe doing what he does best—yelling at umpires.
Was the Laver Cup a success? If you judge by the myriad of reactions—the laughter of the crowd responding to the whoops and reactions of the player’s teammates, the fact that the United Center was sold out three days in a row, one of the largest single sporting events ever to be held at the United Center, the rising decibel levels as the weekend went on, and the truly exuberant celebration of Team Europe as they won—the answer is a resounding yes.

Real estate agent Dawn McKenna expands her Hinsdale success to Chicago and Naples.
WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
CHANGE AGENT
For over fteen years, Coldwell Banker’s Dawn McKenna has made a career out of listening to the wants and needs of her distinguished real estate clients. And indeed, it was one of their growing needs that resulted in a huge move outside the con nes of the Hinsdale area for the well-known real estate broker.
“One of my clients came to me and asked me to get my Florida real estate license,” McKenna recalls of the day she began considering expanding her business to warmer climates. “She wanted me to fully represent her family’s transition from full time Chicagoans to Naples, Florida residents with a part time place in Chicago. As a homeowner in Naples and Chicago, I saw an opportunity to o er my secret sauce of expertise to both new markets.”
In July of 2017, McKenna launched the Dawn McKenna Group in downtown Chicago, Illinois and Naples, Florida. “I was seeing a shift in my clients’ needs,” says McKenna, who is the No. 1 Individual Agent in Illinois among all agencies and the No. 6 Individual agent for Coldwell Banker Worldwide. “Dozens of my clients were downsizing from Hinsdale, buying a smaller condo in Chicago, and moving to Naples, Florida.”
And from that moment on, McKenna says her Chicago and Naples business has ourished. In fact, in less than six months, her team was named the No. 1 Small Team in Naples for Coldwell Banker.
“Naples o ers a very laid-back lifestyle which meshes well with my clients,” says McKenna, who is part of the Luxury Alliance Group with Coldwell Banker, which is made up of the number 1 agent from every a uent city in the world. “I’ve
owned a home in Naples for almost three years now so I personally love the lifestyle. Professionally, I knew I’d be able to o er a unique Midwestern perspective on the Naples market as a realtor in both Illinois and Florida.”
Yet, all growth comes with its share of growing pains. And yes, McKenna says she has had to learn to adjust to her changing workload.
“ e biggest challenge was keeping up with the volume of business we generated from the very beginning, which is an extremely lucky position to be in,” she says. “We’ve been very strategic in our succinct, cohesive marketing and processes and we’re moving full throttle ahead.”
is business philosophy and the ongoing expansion of her business has ultimately helped McKenna’s clients in the long run. “I am able to bring buyers from all around the world and push listings in multiple markets,” she explains. “My clients are also used to the highest quality service if they’ve worked with me before. e expansion has allowed me to o er that quality of service in new markets.”
Are you interested in a possible move to the South, especially during the winter months ahead? Well, McKenna says now might be as good a time as ever to make the move. “In the Naples market, new developments are on the rise,” she says. “Our 22-unit new development listing in Naples, Eight Fifty Central, is already 91 percent reserved—all from clients in the Chicago area—and it hasn’t even hit the market yet!”
Dawn McKenna Group is located at 8 E. Hinsdale Avenue in Hinsdale, 630-546-3763 or dawn@dawnmckennagroup.com.

THE NORTH SHORE’S MOST CREATIVE PURSUITS
Last Dance by Jane Carney
ART IN MOTION
WORDS BY ALICE YORK
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP, AND STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES
“My dialogue with the canvas is like a dance,” explains artist Jane Carney of her work, brimming with movement, informed by years as a dancer and performance artist. “I’ve had a lot of different artistic experiences, but it is in visual art that I’ve found my true means of communication.”
Born on Chicago’s South Side, Carney says, “I’ve always thought of myself as an artist. It’s in my DNA.” Though she has called Wilmette home for the past 32 years, where she lives with her husband and where the couple raised their four children, it is in Evanston where she keeps her studio space. Two years ago, she was brought on to the Exhibition Committee of the Evanston Arts Center: “Evanston has an amazing group of artists and a very organized support system.”
It was around that same time, Carney made the decision to dedicate her attention to a full-time studio practice—she had spent years sharing her passion with students at Loyola Academy, where she chaired the art department. “It was important to me to be an example of a working artist for my students, and I always approached teaching as a coach or mentor,” she shares. “I learned so much from them—it really was a fantastic career.”

SHERIDAN ROAD 56
Jane Carney in front of The Night is Young
And it’s been in these last few years that Carney, a juried member of the National Association of Women Artists, has seen interest in work explode. She credits this to the disciplined studio practice she has created: you can find her there every day from 9 to 5. “I am very process-oriented,” Carney confesses. This process regularly blends materials and sources, inspired by German and Abstract Expressionism and, most recently, the Joffrey’s run of Midsummer Night’s Dream. She counts Richard Diebenkorn’s references to the male and female forms, Cy Twombly’s use of text, the printmaking featured on Robert Rauschenberg’s canvases, and the work of Picasso and Jim Dine among her most salient touchstones.
“When I initiate the canvas with a mark or I throw some paint on it, I never have a preconceived idea of what it’s going to be,” she describes. What begins with a line or loose gestural drawing is layered with collage, a putting on and pulling off with the goal of discovery. “I layer, layer, layer, and then I start excavating—creating unity out of chaos. I might hear a line from an old song and write those words on the canvas, or spray it with some water and let it drip—the drips might lead to something. I embrace mistakes,” she continues. “It’s often these disasters that create that ‘ooh’ moment.” While this looseness is indeed palpable, there is always a nod to formal composition, something that is incredibly important to the classically-trained artist.
This blending of the radical and traditional, this passion-driven process, caught the attention of Brandt-Roberts Galleries in Columbus, Ohio, who invited Carney to be part of a show on that very subject: artistic process. The three pieces she submitted sold immediately, and they have represented her ever since.
Closer to home, she is represented by Shannon Cahill of Art
En Object based in Evanston. “She has really gotten my art out on the North Shore.” Just last July, she was a part of a show at the Union League Club and through January 1, 2019, she will have 14 canvases on display at Vedder Price in Chicago, her first corporate exhibit. Also through January 1, her work will be on exhibit at River Bank Lofts Gallery, helmed by Kellie Segal. She has also been part of Evanston Made, which she describes as an “amazing venue for artists living and working in the area.”
“I am so full of gratitude. There is such a joy in what I’m doing right now, and I think that comes through in my art. Transitions can be scary, but it’s all about perseverance and persistence. If you’re open to every stage of what life will bring, really exciting things happen.”

Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band are always on our playlists. e themes within country songs of loving where you live and being proud of where you’re from really resonates with us. at is what ird Coast is about. We are trying to create an identity that brings people together and celebrates the beauty, friends, and community that surrounds us here on the North Shore.”
ON THEIR NIGHTSTANDS
“ e book on our nightstands varies depending on our book club’s monthly selection (shout out to “LOL Book Club”). Right now we are reading All the Ugly and Wonderful ings by Bryn Greenwood. We are also always perusing the most current issue of Sheridan Road magazine. Reading about all that is going on in our neighborhoods and being inspired by people who live around us who are making a di erence in the community and learning about the new restaurants and businesses popping up keeps us in the know.”
“Our phones are full of podcasts. One favorite is “How I built this” about amazing entrepreneurs like Sarah Blakely, Jenn Hyman, and Barbara Corcoran and how they built their businesses into empires from the ground up. We cannot listen to an episode without feeling like anything is possible with some hard work, dedication, and inspiration. Since we launched ird Coast, we have also been more involved on social media (Facebook: @thirdcoastgoods, Instagram: @thirdcoastapparel) and love following local businesses, bloggers, and designers. ere is such a support system between local businesses and we really help each other out.”

JILLY’S CAFE
WORDS BY JAKE AND ELIZA JARVI / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
Jilly’s Cafe is intimate. That has always been part of its charm. Everything about the one-room, French-inspired bistro is designed to delight, from the bottles of wine lining the shelf at the entrance to the cafe-style shutters running along the top of the front window to the salmon-colored stucco walls and petite chandeliers. It’s a lovely mixture of warmth and whimsy.
That was Eda Nar’s main goal when she assumed ownership of the landmark Evanston cafe. Though she changed the color scheme and decor, she didn’t change a thing about the menu. Why would she? The excellent French food is exactly why she bought the place. She began planning to do just that before she left her table the very first time she and her husband dined at Jilly’s Cafe. “It was the Crispy Goat Cheese appetizer,” she says, completely
Crispy Goat Cheese
This is the dish that convinced Nar to buy Jilly’s Cafe in the first place. Two lightly breaded and fried mouthfuls of goat cheese drizzled in stripes of balsamic vinegar disguise the creamy decadence of the cheese within a sweet and savory crunch. Stalks of roasted asparagus add the perfect flavor counterpoint, a little bit of smoky bitterness. Both of these are served on a bed of essentially deconstructed bruschetta with chopped tomato, onion, and basil splashed with balsamic vinegar, so bright and fresh. Exquisite.
seriously. “That’s what made me want to buy the restaurant.”
It’s the attention to detail that really stands out. A basket of sliced French baguette greets you at the table with little ramekins of whipped butter and chicken liver pâté, so creamy and sweet when it first lands on the tongue before dissolving into a smooth, savory aftertaste. Between the salad course and the entrees, they serve a house made pinot noir sorbet to cleanse the palate with hints of grape and an elegantly dry resolution reminiscent of its wine namesake.
Though the entire menu is time-tested and every regular has their own favorite, here are three dishes that exemplify the exquisite flavors on display at Jilly’s Cafe.
Jilly’s Cafe is located at 2614 Green Bay Road in Evanston, 847-8697636, jillyscafe.com.

Diane’s Beet Salad
Unlike any other beet salad we’ve ever experienced, and we had plenty during The Great Beet Salad Boom of 2016. The beets are shredded and mounded high, by far the most dominant thing on the plate, making for an eye-catching appearance, but within the flavor profile of the dish they’re surprisingly restrained. Mixed greens underneath add to the earthiness while red onion, toasted walnuts, and crumbles of blue cheese really fill out the dish. The real star, however, is strands of shaved fennel. They center the dish in bright, sharp flavor bolstered by the sweetness of a house made raspberry vinaigrette dressing. This salad is bold, tangy, and quite refreshing.
This dish is a thing of beauty. Scallops, little shrimp, and market fish (salmon on the night we visited) are ringed by a circle of cracked open mussels, everything soaking in an outstanding white wine sauce with braised fennel, roasted Roma tomatoes, garlic, and saffron. The rich, garlicky smell made my mouth water in anticipation. Every seafood element was prepared perfectly and, as is often the case with well-executed French cuisine, was elevated by the exceptional sauce. Two large croutons, slices of grilled French bread, ride atop the dish, perfect for soaking up the sauce once we finished the fish.

WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS
From this distance—not so far, but not so near—it is impossible to hear the hooves kicking up the dry earth. But soon, a silent stream of horses appears through the roiling brown cloud, heading down the chute from their pasture on the hill for another day of work. Once the dust comes to rest, just beyond the pond, a range of low, green summits returns to mark the far horizon. The only things moving now are the fast flickering leaves of the aspen. The last of my coffee had cooled. It’s time to make my way to the barn.
When it comes to vacations, there’s nothing wrong with a week stretched out poolside, where rolling over is the height of exertion. But the best getaways are bookended by sitting still and scarcely sitting, by lounging and getting the lead out. There’s something to be said for going to bed bone-tired—or at least feeling a day wellspent. And at the Home Ranch in Colorado’s Elk River Valley, turning in after a day of riding and hiking is one sweet satisfaction. Situated in the shadow of the Rockies, 18 miles from Steamboat Springs, this 4,000 acre, Relais & Châteauxdesignated property combines a rustic vibe with all the topdrawer touches any world traveler could want. Need a massage? Check. A bottle of Chateau Lynch Bages for dinner? No problem. The Home Ranch has earned a Wine Spectator Award of excellence for the past four years. And speaking of dinner, they ain’t slinging hash at The Home Ranch. Thanks to Executive Chef Jonathon Gillespie, think tortellini filled with fava beans and English peas, or cornmeal crusted steelhead trout kissed with a blueberry and jalapeño reduction and served with roasted purple turnips and smoked mashed potatoes.

Home ranch trail ride
Although these creature comforts are welcome, you’ll really feel you’ve earned them after a day in the saddle or a yes-I-can ascent of the 12,000-foot Mount Zirkel, a twenty-minute drive from the ranch. Which isn’t to suggest you’ve got no choice on how to spend your days here. Sometimes, hearing a distant neigh is about as close to a horse as you want to get. And while working your way to a peak along a trail punctuated with Columbine and skunk cabbage can be a soul-changing experience, there’s something to be said for just sitting and watching a Mountain Bluebird dart and weave against a cloudless sky, its path making a robin’s flight at home seem like the futile hopping of a parakeet stuck in a cage.
Whether you’ve ridden all your life, or don’t know a spur from a stirrup, you will have no trouble finding your groove at The Home Ranch, where all activities are geared to one’s experience and comfort level. And depending on the time of year you visit, the menu of things to do is pretty rich, from fly fishing, white water rafting, and rock climbing to skate skiing and snowshoeing. With only 14 guest rooms (and a highly personable crew whose professionalism epitomizes hospitality) The Home Ranch exudes the aura of a private family compound. There are campfires and barbecues, barn dances and sing-a-longs. It doesn’t take long to sink into the rhythm of life here, or to feel, somehow, that you’ve known your wrangler forever.
In addition to its regular roster of activities for families and individuals, The Home Ranch offers specially curated getaways throughout the year. Keyed to the seasons and various aspects of ranch life, these offer guests a thoughtfully focused way to enjoy the wide-open country of the West. Here’s a sampling:
Christmas Week (December 20-27): Enjoy winter wonderland at The Home Ranch for a Christmas to remember. Revel in exquisite luxury dining and festivities or just relax and watch the snow fall from the comfort of the lodge or your own snug cabin. Walk out your front door and enjoy almost every winter activity imaginable—20 miles of Nordic skiing, sledding, tubing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides. With caroling and music, it’s the perfect holiday setting for every taste and generation. (Five-night minimum stay)
New Year’s Week (December 27-January 3): Continue the winter wonderland fun into the new year. This and other holiday vacation packages include shuttle service to and from Steamboat Springs airport, valet ski shuttle service, private hot tubs, and 30 kilometers of groomed, Nordic trails at your doorstep. The New Year’s package includes a special bonfire celebration. (Five-night minimum stay)
January 18-21: Winter & Whiskey
March 2: Home Ranch Round-Up Ski Race (With Boulder Nordic Sports)
March 20-26: Spring Horse Warm Up
March 26: Ranch closes until May
Ranch Work Week (May 14-19): Perfect for those who always need something to do (even when on vacation), this springtime offering lets you get your hands dirty repairing fences, clearing trails, planting seedlings and generally helping the team prep the property for the summer season.

EGG HARBOR LUXE
Forget the cabin in the woods. Our Sheridan Road publisher found a posh retreat in Door County, Wisconsin that pairs stunning views and luxury amenities with rustic, small town charm.
WORDS BY JOHN CONATSER
Hear people talk about a long weekend in Door County and your mind goes to the obvious attractions—small town Wisconsin charm, cherry pie, art galleries, and abundant festivals of all descriptions. Scenes from this region conjure postcards throughout the year, ones that depict rustic cabins in the woods, old-fashioned B&Bs, and vintage cottages on the bay.
Before visiting Egg Harbor and the surrounding towns recently with my family, that’s exactly what I envisioned. But the waterfront property we were lucky to discover took our Door County experience to the next level, adding a layer of luxury and North Shore sophistication.
The peaceful walks in the woods and s’mores by the bonfire were the same, only ours were enjoyed from a 7,000-square-foot

vacation home that felt more like an exclusive retreat. With one acre of private woodland, 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and a large, 1 bedroom, 1 bath coach house, it offered everything our large family of eight children needed to spread out and soak in the natural beauty of the area.
From car shows to frozen custard in Fish Creek (my kids loved Not Licked Yet) to watching the sun set over the bay from the spectacular terrace, we enjoyed every moment there.
It may not surprise our readers to learn that the owners of this and a neighboring vacation rental (almost identical in size and layout) have North Shore connections. Bill O’Neil says that when he and his Winnetka friends Kevin Plunkett and Carter Ruehrdanz bought the three-acre parcel in the 7500 block of Mariner Road in 2012, it had been the site of an old hotel with a series of small cottages spread along the waterfront.
“We razed the dilapidated cottages and divided the land into three lots,” O’Neil says. “We sold one lot and built two mansions on the others, enlisting renowned Northfield architect Doug Reynolds to draw up the plans.”
O’Neil’s wife Cindy Erickson did all the decorating with only high end furniture, linens, and amenities, all which added to the luxury experience. To say that we felt pampered is an understatement.
Every floor had radiant heat, including the garage and coach house. The kitchen was very high end, with Wolf Range and Subzero refrigerator, and the great room with a roaring fireplace and big screen TV quickly became a favorite family gathering place. My kids especially enjoyed the large yard and private access to the waterfront. To be honest, there’s so much to do right there on the property that we almost didn’t even need to go into the nearby small towns.
However, I’m glad we did—venturing out to Fish Creek and beyond almost every day. We enjoyed all the qualities the area is known for, from the cozy feeling of the people to the quaint shops
and restaurants. But by the end of the vacation, my perception of a rustic Door County getaway was elevated beyond my expectations, and that’s exactly what O’Neil and his team had in mind.
“Our goal was to develop the land to provide a luxury rental experience,” explains O’Neil, adding that it’s almost that time of year when the water begins to freeze over for winter activities. “We would enjoy seeing more renters from the North Shore, whether it be for reunions, business retreats, or family vacations.”
My family and I can’t recommend it enough.

Originally from River Forest, Beth Wood was living in San Francisco during the tech boom of the late 1990s when her sister introduced her to Bill Cadigan. Though she was already itching to return to the Midwest, it was romance that tipped the scales in Windy City’s favor—Bill happened to live in Chicago.
She moved back and the couple married and moved in together, settling into Little Italy in Chicago’s near west side, where they remained for several years. While they loved city life, after a year of living with a baby in a small 2-bedroom condo, Beth began exploring other options: “It was a snowy Sunday in 2008 when we drove out to see the house. When we turned onto the street, we were both instantly struck by its charm,” she shares.
While the quaint street and location just half-a-block from the lake sealed the deal, they discovered one more compelling detail prior to the sale: the previous owner? None other than a former Chicago Cub! “We occasionally still get mail from his fans. We pass these letters along to him, and he always responds with the kindest notes—and even signed balls for our son. Everyone on the street says he was a great neighbor.”
There is no doubt he would appreciate the “man cave” in the basement shared by Bill and the couple’s son Billy, who is now

10: the comfortable rec room is covered in posters featuring their favorite Cubbies. The room is also home to Bill’s favorite leather club chair: “He’s had it since before we met,” Beth laughs.
Though the basement is the boys’ domain, the remainder of the “cottage-y” 1920s home, which is a charming intersection of Tudor and Georgian styles, is all carefully designed by Beth. What was always a hobby for the busy mom, who has worked for the past 17 years as an account executive at a payments technology firm, became a passion project.
But she had a helping hand in turning her ideas into reality. Beth’s aunt, Kathy Hanley of Lake Interiors, based in Lakeside, Michigan, executed her niece’s vision into actual fabrics, furniture, and trimming. In the 1980s Hanley, with a group of partners, opened Vintage Pine, the much-beloved furniture and antiques store in Chicago. “I worked there on the weekends after college. This was my first introduction to professional design,” Beth shares.
“I take an inspiration point and work around that,” she explains. “I found a dress for my niece years ago that was gray flannel with a brown velvet sash. That provided a jumping point for the color scheme for the family room.”
This is a homeowner with an eye for detail and a passion for the hunt. “I fell in love with a pair of lamps I saw in a magazine, trying to find out who made them. Years later, I found them on First Dibs—I designed an entire bedroom around them.”
Every room is dotted with these decidedly vintage details. “I have such an appreciation for all the little things—that’s what
gives a home personality.” This includes midcentury pieces from Donald Stuart Antiques in Winnetka (“About 90 percent of my house is from Donald Stuart!”), blue and white porcelain from Pagoda Red in Chicago, English antiques found at Winnetka’s Rare Finds, midcentury modern accents from Chicago’s Redefined Décor, and cranberry glass she inherited from her late aunt, Mary. Other favorite sources: Wilmette’s Heritage Trail Mall, estate sales, and Lake Forest’s Antiques & Treasures in the field.
Color also abounds in this joyful space, so beautifully captured in these images taken by Beth’s sister, photographer Regan Wood. “Color makes me happy and makes a statement—I’ve always gravitated towards it,” Beth explains. “Those are the interiors that jump out at me. Take Miles Redd designs—they’re eye candy to me, all the color and detail—or Tory Burch’s interiors, designed by Daniel Romualdez. And I love Alessandra Branca and her use of reds and greens.”
This inspiration can be seen throughout the house, but especially visible in Beth’s favorite room, her office. In it you’ll find a Tiffany blue velvet couch, an Easter egg striped carpet, Slim Aarons photographs, lavender velvet stools, ivory grasscloth on the walls, and an orange Chinoiserie coffee table. “I spend so much time in there, I wanted it to be bright and cheerful.”
She adds, “I love making things come to life.”

REAL ADVICE
It was 2006, and Lori Glattly had it all. She had a caring husband, a loving family and a real estate business that was thriving on the North Shore.
And then everything came tumbling down.
“I lost my husband in an accident that year, and I was faced with the task of picking up the pieces and finding a way to go on,” says the Koenig Rubloff agent who now partners with her daughter-in-law Courtney in The Glattly Group. “I basically had to reinvent myself.”
And that’s exactly what she did.
Flash forward 12 years, and Glattly finds herself at the height of her career. Not only has she listed and sold over 100 million dollars worth of high-end real estate in communities such as Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, but she also has seen great success helping her clients with buying and selling real estate in the lush community of Naples, Florida and in its surrounding communities.
“Naples has always been a special place to me,” says Glattly, who first started spending time in the area at the tender age of six years old. “Every time I go there and I feel those wheels hit the runway, it’s as if I can take a deep breath again.”
Glattly says that through the years, she has seen Naples go from a sleepy beach town to an elegant destination. “What a lot of people don’t know is that the community culture there is much like the community culture we have here on the North Shore,” she explains. “But when it comes to real estate, it’s important to remember that Florida is a transactional brokerage state, so it’s extremely important to always work with a trusted professional.”
But while her work in Naples may keep Glattly up in the air occasionally while she travels back and forth to meet all of her client’s needs, make no mistake—her boots are firmly planted on the ground here.
“The fact is that I have my finger on the pulse of both markets, and that is something that my clients can benefit from in many ways,” she says. “And while my business is split evenly between the two markets, the truth is that I’m here in the area over 70 percent of the time.”
Oh, and yes, did we mention Glattly is also a cofounder of a local construction company?
“My knowledge about design and building has ended up being a very useful tool when it comes to working with my real estate clients,” says Glattly, who started the construction company with her partner back in 2012. “Very often I will be walking through a home that someone is looking to buy and eventually renovate, and I can use my construction knowledge to help them envision what could be. To me, this kind of knowledge adds a lot of value to the overall relationship.”
And while she admits to just being one of those high energy people that thrives on busy days, the question remains—how does she do it all?
“I have an amazing support system both here and in Naples that I rely on each and every day,” she explains. “Without them, I truly don’t know where I would be or how I would be able to fit it all in.”
She also has someone else on her side.
“I am a woman of great faith,” she says quietly. “I truly feel that God has led me to where I am today. And I couldn’t be happier.”

The dazzling ukiyo-e collection of ROGER WESTON makes its U.S. debut at the Art Institute of Chicago.
WESTON WORLD
WORDS BY MORGAN HOGERTY / PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN HAIR, MAKEUP, AND STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES
SHERIDAN ROAD 82
Alost treasure found, beauty secrets uncovered, private moments revealed, hidden meanings unveiled, and favorites disclosed—these phrases offer tantalizing hints of the visual pleasures to be found in the Painting the Floating World exhibition. Opening at the Art Institute of Chicago in November, the exhibition showcases 150 artists’ ukiyo-e paintings from the extraordinary private collection of Winnetka’s Roger Weston.
The Japanese term ukiyo-e translates to “paintings of the floating world”—a world where life’s pleasures are savored and enjoyed; a world free of life’s brutalities. The floating world found its concrete expression in the vibrant walled entertainment districts established in every major Japanese city during the peaceful Edo period. Within these districts, the restrictions of a rigid class system were cast aside. As they enjoyed bustling teahouses, theaters, and brothels, the classes mixed while reveling in conspicuous consumption. Over the span of three centuries, these scenes were beautifully captured by ukiyo-e artists.
The Weston Collection owes its origins to a chance encounter. “I first encountered ukiyo-e in 1995 during an exhibit of some of my Japanese lacquer pieces,” Roger Weston recalls. “The display cabinets were full but the walls were bare so ukiyo-e scrolls were hung to dress the space up. I was captivated by the scrolls’ precise yet delicate strokes, their vivid colors, and their sheer artistry.”
A LOST TREASURE FOUND
The Weston Collection owes its singular reputation to Roger’s keen appreciation of history and his exacting standards of quality. “I love history so I approach collecting from a historical perspective. When viewing this exhibit, you will be able to see the ukiyo-e movement from its very beginning to its very end,” Roger
explains. “The way Roger goes about collecting reflects his love of learning. He wants to understand an entire genre and then tell the whole story as a teaching tool,” observes Janice Katz, the Roger L. Weston Associate Curator of Japanese Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. As the ukiyo-e movement began in the 17th century and spanned over 260 years, pieces often suffered the ravages of time. “I only acquire paintings in excellent or very good condition because it is these pieces that best communicate the artists’ skills to the viewer,” Roger says. He was thrilled to recently discover an ukiyo-e treasure that had been lost for nearly 80 years. Last seen at a 1936 Tokyo auction and formerly owned by a 19th century Japanese baron, Ryukyuan People Dancing and Playing Musical Instruments captures a lighthearted moment. As ukiyo-e paintings most often depicted glittering cosmopolitan scenes, this painting’s depiction of life on the Ryukyu Islands, now known as Okinawa, make it especially important.
BEAUTY SECRETS UNCOVERED AND PRIVATE MOMENTS REVEALED
The hallmark of the Weston Collection is its bijinga or paintings on paper or silk of beautiful women. The women’s elaborate hairstyles, often secured with delicate tortoiseshell pins and combs, illustrate the evolution of fashion and beauty ideals over the centuries. These tonsorial secrets are uncovered for museum visitors in a movie specifically commissioned for the exhibit. “The movie showcases the talents of a ninety-year-old woman, who is one of the last remaining masters of traditional hairstyling for the geisha community,” Katz describes. “She recreates three hair styles depicted in the exhibit’s paintings using a modern-day geisha as her subject.”
A spectacular example of bijinga is 100 Women, which visitors will find in Room Five of the exhibit. While its twenty-four frames depict women of all social classes, the most intriguing frames reveal the intimate moments of Japanese courtesans. In

one frame, a courtesan grimaces as she removes a tattoo from her arm while the women around her read, prepare tea, and wash away the last traces of elaborate makeup. “Utagawa Toyokuni I, the artist, has conceived very complex, very vivid scenes of Edo-period life,” observes Katz. “Seeing these women with their elaborate hair styles and breathtaking fashions in these incredibly detailed settings brings this long ago world to life.”

Some of the exhibit’s ukiyo-e paintings are graced with lines of calligraphy; delicate lines that cascade down like a shower of cherry blossoms. Recent generations could only appreciate the callig-
raphy for its technical beauty because the meaning of the text had been lost. Now, as a result of painstaking research by the scholarly team behind the Painting the Floating World exhibit, the layered poetic meanings within the calligraphy have been unveiled.
“Our main goal was to illuminate these passages as best we could. We didn’t want any part of these paintings to be hidden from our viewers,” Katz remarks. Yet, as Katz elaborates “translating and transcribing inscriptions of this age, especially with their word play, is a task only a handful of people are up to undertaking. Thankfully, Mami Hatayama, the Weston Collection’s curator, along with another scholar based in London took on the task of making sure the bulk of inscriptions were translated. It really was an enormous task. These scholars had to put themselves into the mindsets of poets in Edo-period Japan who were creating these verses, often as inside jokes, for their literary-minded friends.”
FAVORITES DISCLOSED
In the past, when pressed to select favorites among his collection, Roger had always deferred saying he “could not choose because they are like my children.” In celebration of the exhibit’s opening, Roger has chosen to share his three favorites with Sheridan Road readers. At first glance, the three favorites seem more dissimilar than similar. Woman Arranging Her Hair by Nishikawa Sukenobu depicts a woman enjoying a solitary moment as she dreamily brushes her hair at day’s end while Two Women and Autumn Plants by Keisai Eisen captures the playful interaction between two friends. The vertical planes of the prior two paintings contrast sharply with the strong horizontal lines of Seated Woman Enjoying A Pipe by Hishikawa Morotane. All three paintings, however, are remarkable for their ability to create a connection with the viewer. A connection Roger describes “as making you feel as if you were just a few feet away, rather than centuries removed.” A connection worthy of a favorite.
These favorites and more can be found in an exhibition that unfolds chronologically across eight rooms in the Art Institute’s Regenstein Hall. The location is especially fitting as Roger and his wife, Pamela, are deeply connected to the Art Institute; a connection fostered during their childhoods. Roger visited the museum’s galleries regularly as a child with his mother, an art teacher and member of the North Shore Art League. As the eleven-year-old winner of an Art Institute contest, Pamela was able to paint her own paintings as she sat in the museum’s storied Impressionist rooms. Both have assumed important leadership roles within the museum: Roger as Chair of the Committee on Asian Art; Pamela as Chair of the Sustaining Fellows Program Committee. As benefactors of the Roger L. and Pamela Weston Wing and Japanese Art Galleries, the couple have had a major impact on the experiences of both the Art Institute’s visitors and its members. “As major supporters of Japanese art, Pam and I have been honored to further the Art Institute’s goal to increase Western exposure to Asian art,” Roger reflects. “Broadening understanding of Japanese art and creating an appreciation of its complex layers gives purpose to my collection.”

FEEL GOOD, DO GOOD
Lake Forest’s Cheryl Manko feels good about giving back.
The idea for Feel Good Undies, as many very good ideas do, came quite naturally. Twenty-six year Lake Forest resident and company founder Cheryl Manko , a recent breast cancer survivor, wanted to give good back. Volunteering at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission near her winter home in Palm Desert, California, Manko was following director Darla Burkett on a tour through the mission.
“We came to the donation room which was full of jackets and blankets, hats and mattresses—the typical things you’d see donated,” recalls Manko . “And next to that room, was the laundry facility where there happened to be a woman and her child who were washing a load of intimates. At that moment— and I don’t quite know what made me ask, I turned to the director and said, ‘You have all of these amazing donations, what is the one item that you really need most?’ And the director said just one word: ‘Underwear.’”

“It makes sense when you think about it,” says Manko . “People donate all kinds of gently used clothing and material goods and furniture to the needy, but hardly anyone wants to—or thinks to donate intimate apparel.”
and this and
While most people might have led information away, and ally forgotten about it, Manko couldn’t stop thinking about the need. “I just kept turning that statement over in my mind,” she says. “So, when I got up the next morning, I decided to call around to shelters and ask the same question: ‘What’s the one item you need the most?’”
Calls to shelters in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York conrmed that she was on to something. “It wasn’t just California— it was nationwide. Directors at every single one of those shelters said the same thing: ‘ e item we need the most is underwear,’” she recalls.
“So, I decided to do something about it.” at something is Feel Good Undies, the only e-commerce intimate apparel company in the United States that donates one pair of gorgeous, high-end underwear to shelters for every customer pair purchased.
Launched in November 2017, the company has already donated 1,000 pairs of underwear to the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission in Indio, California, and has goals to eventually donate to every homeless shelter from coast to coast. at’s no small task, Manko allows, as there are tens of thousands of shelters across the country—3,000 in the city of Chicago alone.
“I get calls from shelters every day,” says Manko , “More than 200 have already asked me to please consider donating Feel Good Undies. So, I just keep adding them to the queue.”
Meetings with the mayor’s o ce in Los Angeles opened doors for Manko to work with a nonpro t there that specializes in warehousing and distribution of donated items. She plans to pay that forward, meeting with the powers that be in as many U.S. cities as she can.
Currently Feel Good Undies’ product line includes men’s boxer briefs, briefs and trunks and women’s thongs, briefs, and boy shorts, all priced at $25.50. Children’s underwear will be added to the line soon.
editorial pages for decades. She was also Oprah Winfrey’s number one petite-sized model, for Winfrey’s fashion shows. But in fact, the smile was born out of a visit Manko had with a shelter resident.
“A really nice gentleman—and I mean a gentle man, shared his feelings about being on the streets. He wanted people to understand that when you see someone like him on the streets, a simple smile and acknowledgement means more than anything. A genuine smile from someone makes him feel that he has a little self-worth for that moment! So that is why I have the big orange smile on my logo.”
Designing the underwear, Manko says she sought and bought every variety she could nd that had some design detail, fabric, structure or make that she liked, and then worked with her manufacturer.
“I’d say, I like this element of this pair, and that of another pair, and then we incorporated all of the best elements to come up with our product line.”
Fashioned from Micro Modal, a bamboo ber fabric that becomes softer with each wash, the underwear has a no-roll waistband and comes in a solid black color. (Additional colors and possibly prints, may come soon.)
“My son Ian, a Division 1 golfer was my test model,” Manko laughs. “He wore them carrying his golf bag for 36 holes in 100 degree heat. And he said they were the most comfortable underwear he’d ever put on.”

Because they are so well suited for active wear, Manko will be marketing Feel Good Undies at the Conway Golf Club and other country clubs on the North Shore and is open to the idea of selling through boutiques and on college campuses. “But my main focus, because I want to reach as many people as possible in order to get as many pairs of underwear as possible to the shelters, is e-commerce,” she reiterates.

Because she must run her business at very close tolerances in order to keep the buy-onegive-one model stable, Manko is exploring some creative marketing methods. She has already developed relationships with student ambassadors at the University of Chicago, Harvard, Northwestern, UCLA, USC, University of Wisconsin, and Washington University, and is establishing more planned partnerships with schools. She’s also looking at the possibility of sponsorships with celebrities who have been homeless at one point in their lives but are now successful.
“ e response I have from my customers when I see them out and about is just simply the best! It is not unusual for someone to show me their orange smile and tell me how they are feeling good and want to share their smile. Or they will ask me with a huge smile, ‘Are you feeling good, because I’m feeling good!’ My mission is to make a meaningful di erence for the dignity of the needy across the country by nding a way to make it easy for people to simply give back and Feel Good ... Do Good!”

Evanston’s Mudlark eater Company takes annual fall fundraiser to Temperance for an evening of fun and inspiration to make its programming accessible for all.
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS
Since 2005, Mudlark eater Company has raised the bar for professional quality theater for young people—producing nearly 100 productions that are changing the perception of the genre. is year, with a new strategic plan in place and bold vision for the coming mainstage season, the nonpro t organization is poised to reinvent itself and join the likes of Writer’s eatre, Citadel eatre, and other professional companies on the North Shore.
“We want to stage new work where kids play kids,” explains Artistic Director Andrew Biliter. “ e stories that we choose to tell will be stories about kids, portrayed by kids, with adult characters played by professional adult actors.”
e goal is to produce professional-quality, non-Equity productions for all audiences, not just for Mudlark players and their families.
While Mudlark’s studio productions, summer camps, and afterschool classes will not change, the mainstage productions will include more world premiere works that highlight the stories of young people about issues and struggles that are impacting their lives in these times. is new strategy is in sync with the company’s increased focus on equity and inclusion to ensure racial and economic diversity.
And it is for this reason that its annual fundraiser, Larkabout, is taking a di erent turn this year. Aiming to create an event that is more relaxed, fun, and a ordable, “A Flight of Mudlark” on Saturday, November 17 will be held at Temperance Beer Company, 2000 Dempster Street, in Evanston.
In addition to Temperance beers and food from Evanston’s popular Ten Mile House, Larkabout guests will be treated to a series of sketches, songs, and poems performed by Mudlark actors perched on barrels and boxes at intervals throughout the evening.
Striving to ensure community-wide accessibility for the event, this year’s ticket price is lower than previous Larkabout events. Proceeds will provide crucial support for the theater’s work to serve, teach, and empower thousands of local kids through theater—ensuring that no child is ever denied a Mudlark experience for nancial reasons.

Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois is in your corner. COLLABORATION
WORDS BY TRICIA DESPRES / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER
Within the lush homes up and down the quaint streets of the North Shore, countless families will come together over the holidays to spend time together. They will open presents and light candles and bask in the glow of the holiday season.
But sometimes, not everything is the way it seems.
Because for many families, the fact is that this holiday season will come with its share of pain, especially when a couple finds themselves in the middle of a divorce.
“It’s so important for kids to be able to rely on the traditions they are used to during the holidays, even when their parents are in the midst of a breakup,” explains collaborative attorney Rita Ghose. “At the same time, there are opportunities to come together to create new traditions that are cool and fun that everyone can look forward to.”
Luckily, for many couples, the divorce process as a whole has become a bit less painful thanks to the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois (CLII). In fact, Ghose serves as the President of the group, which utilizes the talents of an attorney, a child specialist, a divorce coach and a financial specialist to help couples get through the complexities of divorce proceedings.
“It’s important for everyone involved to know what’s coming down the road, especially this time of the year,” explains divorce advisor and attorney Karen Covy who also works under the umbrella of the CLII. “Divorce is so very emotional and so taxing both physically and mentally. It can often feel like you have taken a second full-time job. But that’s where a collaborative team can help lighten the load a bit.”
Collaborative divorce teams are especially becoming that much more pivotal this year, as federal changes surrounding divorce are making things much more complicated.
“For divorces concluding after 12/31/2018, alimony will no longer be deductible for the payor and that could make it harder for divorcing couples to leverage the difference in tax brackets to agree to higher spousal maintenance payments. Fortunately, those contemplating divorce have the option of a Collaborative process which can help them work together to find creative solutions that meet the couple’s and children’s needs, rather than digging into entrenched positions. The Collaborative process utilizes a neutral financial professional, usually a CFP or CPA, with special training in the financial issues of divorce, who can help the couple conceive of and model solutions,” explains Bill Keffer, a certified financial planner who serves as the treasurer for CLII. “There are also many changes to the tax brackets that are frankly quite complicated, so
it’s nice to have an expert in your corner.”
And while so much of divorce comes down to numbers and figures on paper, what really ultimately matters are the children who find themselves in the middle of it all.
“I’ve seen so many children who end up struggling after a divorce,” explains mental health professional and CLII member Paulette Janus. “Personally, that’s why I feel so proud to be more on the preventative side of things rather than helping to pick up the pieces after everything is all said and done.”
And while the holidays might be different for any family going through the rigors of divorce, understanding the process is ultimately going to help everyone in the long run.
“It’s a fact—in divorce, there are no winners,” concludes Ghose. “It’s a loss. But being able to work with a team that you know has your best interests in mind is going to help you sleep better at night. Having a team that is always looking for a workable solution is very freeing, especially this time of the year.”

WORK HAPPY
Joanna Koperski loves the real estate adventure.
WORDS
There are those people who wake up every day to go to a job that doesn’t challenge them or entice them or make them very happy.
But make no mistake—Lake Forest real estate broker Joanna Koperski is not one of those people.
“Real estate is one of those interesting professions driven by a constantly changing landscape,” explains Koperski, an agent with @properties who specializes in North Shore luxury properties. “Each day offers a whole new set of challenges—dealing with and bringing these varied intricacies to a satisfying resolution is the most exciting and rewarding aspect of my job. I simply love it.”
Currently ranked amongst the top five percent of real estate brokers in Illinois, Koperski spends each day working within the Lake Bluff and North Shore areas of the Chicago real estate market. Yet, Lake Forest holds a special place in her heart.
“Living and working in Lake Forest has completely enriched my life,” says Koperski, whose earliest childhood memories were of watching riders exercise their horses in the paddock just west of North Avenue Beach. “When my husband and I decided to move our family to Lake Forest, we purchased the original Wheeler farm house dating from 1900. We now have the best of all worlds—beautiful surroundings, an abundance of nature, convivial neighbors, great cultural and community events, wonderful local shopping both here and in our surrounding towns, entertainment and ease of transportation.”
Educating clients about the community in which she lives is something Koperski takes great pride in, especially when it means sharing information that many don’t realize.
“We are proud to have the lowest property taxes on the North Shore,” says Koperski, who was owner and CEO of a successful advertising and marketing firm before entering the world of real estate. “A drive through Lake Forest’s winding streets reveals a town intensely conscious of its historical roots, presenting perfectly manicured properties ranging from magnificent country estates through homes of every conceivable size.”
It’s this kind of intimate info that Koperski says her clients simply cannot find by using the common real estate search engines currently out there.
“Each property is unique, and only a real estate agent possesses access to the proprietary search engines to accurately position a specific property in the market,” says Koperski, who is also a
member of the Lake Forest Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Forest Historical Preservation Foundation and the Lake Forest International Club. “Both buyers and sellers would be well-advised to enlist the help of a reputable realtor to guide them through this morass of information available online.”
And no matter what some might say, it’s a great time to get into the real estate market.
“Though the current consensus seems to trend to a softer market, buttressed by the prognosed future interest hikes, politics, and changes in preferences, historically the real estate market has survived it all,” she says. “In truth, there is a buyer for every house. My goal as agent is to manage that experience as seamlessly as possible. So, don’t be afraid to jump into the market, enjoy the process, and best of luck on your new adventure!”

BEAUTY
Long before the rest of the world wakes up, salon owner Paul Rehder rises from his much-deserved slumber. He takes a moment to breathe in the day that lies ahead of him and then proceeds to exercise both his body and his soul.
“5 a.m. is my time for myself,” Rehder says quietly. “It’s the time I take to center myself, both in body and mind. As I have gotten older, it’s become an even more important part of my routine, because it helps me stay both grounded and centered.”
And then, he gets in his car and goes for a drive.
“It’s always humbling for me to take this drive,” explains Rehder during a recent interview with Sheridan Road magazine. “For so many years, my clients would drive in from the North Shore to my salon in the city. And now, as I routinely drive from the city to our salon in Winnetka, it is as if I can now feel the commitment they made to come see me. It’s hard to explain that sort of commitment and that kind of loyalty.”
But it’s this commitment and this loyalty that Rehder says
serves as the backbone of the success of his salons. Currently celebrating their four-year anniversary in Winnetka and over twenty-eight years in the city, Paul Rehder’s salons have become quite well known not only for the talents of his staff but the serenity in which the salons provide.
“We always want to provide an environment for our clients that allows them to take a breath for a moment,” says Rehder, who opened his first salon at the age of 27 with just three employees under his wing. “So many of these women are in a chapter of their lives when they have so many responsibilities to their family, their kids, and their community.”
But during their time in the salon chair, these clients find solace.
“There isn’t a day that a client doesn’t pull me aside and thank me for what we offer to them,” he says. “You can’t find any better people than the people in the Midwest. They are genuinely very loyal. My life has happened because of them.”
At this point of his career, Rehder says he has much he still wants to accomplish. “I am a list guy,” he admits. “I always seem to come in with a pad of paper of things I need to get done.”
So, what is on his list these days? Plenty.
“I want to make sure our team is as educated as possible,” says Rehder, whose certified master colorists have received a number of national recognitions throughout the years. “I also have many future goals, including Paul Rehder Beauty. We are testing the waters when it comes to skin treatments. And yes, adding another location to our portfolio in the near future is something that is very possible.”
There is a lot to look forward to. “I feel very thankful and feel very blessed to live the life I lead,” he says.

“Irecently had a client in Glencoe who took two years to find their dream home, and that was just fine with me,” Maisel says during an interview with Sheridan Road magazine. “I think that’s a good thing about me. I’m willing to take as much time as my clients need to find what they are looking for.”
And taking this time to build personal and professional relationships in the real estate world has resulted in Maisel being one of the area’s most successful real estate brokers. From high-end suburban residences to multi-unit dwellings in the city, Maisel has been able to serve hundreds of buyers and sellers, selling more $200 million dollars worth of real estate. These kinds of stats land Maisel consistently in the top 1 percent of all real estate brokers in Chicago.
He loves the area in which he works. He always has. “I grew up in Northbrook,” says Maisel, who now calls Glencoe home. “I loved growing up so close to the lake. I guess you could just say I have loved being a part of the hardy stock of the Midwest.”
As he got older, Maisel began to fall in love with real estate.
“I always had an interest in real estate,” he explains. “My mom was an interior decorator, and I loved photography. Plus, I really loved working with people so real estate brought that all together for me.”
To this day, his love for the area and his interest in real estate continues to propel Maisel to work serving the areas of Glen-
coe, Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Highland Park, Glenview, Deerfield, and Evanston.
“I love helping people find their dream home,” he explains. “It’s one of the most important decisions that people could make. The key is identifying the needs of the customer.”
And once you meet those needs, Maisel says you can see it almost immediately. “It’s all about the twinkle you see in their eye, you just know they have found the space that is going to work.”
But finding yourself in that dream space can come with its share of challenges, especially within a marketplace that seems to get more complicated with every passing year. Therefore, it’s of vital importance that buyers and sellers are thoroughly educated about the entire process.
That’s where Maisel comes in.
“Being honest and transparent with your clients is the most important thing I can do as an agent,” says Maisel, who routinely has a hand in 50 to 60 real estate transactions a year. “You have to have a trust in your realtor. There are so many people that discount what we do, but the fact is that you need to know the market and you need to know the economics of the market.”

Plastic Surgery Update: Reverse Summer Sun Damage
Hopefully, you all had a wonderful summer. If you’re like me, I suspect you may not have been religious in your use of sunblock. As the tan fades the age spots, sun spots, and blemishes may become more apparent. Now is the perfect time to reverse the sun damage and imperfections and achieve the glowing results you desire.
At Skin Deep Medical Spa under the care of our experienced aestheticians, we have multiple options and technologies to tackle almost any age-related or sun damage problem. We can customize a program to meet your time constraints and cost concerns.
Fraxel Dual 1550/1927 resurfacing treatment effectively targets both the surface and deeper layers of the skin for a smoother, fresher, younger looking appearance. It improves tone and texture. Erases unwanted brown spots and reduces wrinkles. It is excellent for the face, neck, chest, arms, legs, and back. The results are both immediate and progressive. For optimal results, more than one treatment is usually recommended and perhaps yearly maintenance. I’m scheduled for mine in two weeks. Downtime is usually minimal. In fact, I will be back at work the next day.
IPL or photo facial treatments are an advanced light-based technology that clears undesirable brown spots, red spots, sun damage revealing clearer more beautiful skin. There is no downtime. A series of treatments may be needed for the desired result and based on your lifestyle maintenance treatments are recommended.
Cryo Clear is a new form of cryotherapy that is excellent for the reduction of brown spots. This procedure works by spraying Carbon Dioxide onto the skin which freezes superficially at -79˚ C where only the epidermal layers are treated. Because the treatment is shallow but effective the risk of blistering, scarring, and hypopigmentation that is usually associated with other forms of cryotherapy is minimized.
We have additional options to keep your skin looking even and glowing from peels to microdermabrasions.
So now is the perfect time to get your skin back in optimal shape. For additional information, visit bodybybloch.com or Dr. Bloch can be reached at his Highland Park office at 847-432-0840.

HONOR
Redding Worth journeyed to Washington, D.C. with the Lake County Honor Flight to honor veterans including Lake Forest’s Pasquale Caputo.
WORDS BY REDDING WORTH / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always thanked soldiers in uniform. Earlier this year I was presented with an opportunity to do more than just say “thank you.” My parents sponsored two local veterans on an honor ight and my dad mentioned volunteering to be a guardian. As I heard more about the guardian role, I decided that I too wanted to do something to honor America’s heroes. Although I am an eighth grader and honor ight guardians are almost always adults, I was able to qualify and join the journey.
e Honor Flight Network is a nonpro t group of chapters across the country. ese chapters have own more than 100,000 veterans over the past 10 years to visit Washington, D.C. Each chapter handles its own fundraising and the trips are of no cost to the veterans. We have one chapter just up the road and based out of North Chicago—the Lake County Honor Flight.
In 48 hours, we ew across the country and back, saw many memorials, honored our veterans, and had an unforgettable experience. We started with a 2:00 am wake up call, a 3:00 am bus ride with police escorts to an early morning ight, and then visits to the war memorials and Washington D.C. highlights. Along the way, our veterans were greeted and cheered by strangers and given thanks from passing tourists and locals. e term “heartwarming” doesn’t even come close to describing the experience.
My veteran Pasquale Caputo was part of two very special moments. First, he was chosen as one of four veterans for a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to honor a fallen soldier. Second, he and I shared in a private visitation at the grave of the Army Special Forces soldier—SFC James Ochsner—whose mother and father also joined the honor ight and are a Gold Star family.
Lake County Honor Flight #13 returned to North Chicago to Veterans Park on a sunny Sunday afternoon. ere were signs, cheers, music, and speeches. I learned from Pasquale and the other veterans that they were often ignored or even mocked during their return from service. It was our goal to give them a proper welcome home. e Lake County Honor Flight is a second chance to feel celebrated and a chance for closure … the veterans’ one last mission.
Pasquale was born in Italy and moved to the United States with his family as a pre-teen. All three of his brothers served in the Army and at age 22 Pasquale enlisted. e Army rst sent him to Germany, then he returned to Fort Sheridan for seven months. He continued on to Fort Riley Kansas, home of the 1st Infantry Division. In 1965, the whole division was sent to Vietnam. From Fort Riley, they were containerized on rail to Oakland Army terminal to board a U.S. Navy troop transport ship to Vietnam. e ship took 32 days to get to Vung Tau, Vietnam. After his tour in
Vietnam, Pasquale returned to Travis Air Force base in California for discharge. It was more than 50 years later that he nally felt gratitude for his service. e honor ight brought him a sense of peace that had been missing all those years.
I came home with a new understanding of what my grandfathers and others like Pasquale did for our country. Our veterans have fought over the course of our country’s history to protect our freedom. As a young adult, I believe it is important for my generation to understand that freedom isn’t free, that veterans should be thanked, and we should hold pride in our people, our nation, and those who protect it. I wouldn’t trade the honor ight experience for anything.
